ABBA made a historic landing on September 17, 1979, when they played their first-ever concert on American soil – during the only international tour they ever did.
ABBA: The Tour had arrived in North America two days earlier, as the Scandinavian superstars started their itinerary with Canadian shows in Edmonton and Vancouver. But when they stepped out on the stage of the 5,000-seat Seattle Centre Arena, it was the first time they’d ever played for an American audience. This was fully five years after their international breakthrough with “Waterloo.”
It began a run of 13 US shows, followed by two more in Canada, before the quartet and their touring entourage headed for Europe. A Washington date on October 11 was canceled because Agnetha was ill. Bur this was the leg of the tour that would include the six-night run at Wembley Arena that was commemorated with the 2015 release of a CD, limited edition digibook and a 180 gram triple vinyl set, courtesy of Universal Music Catalogue.

With their sixth studio album Voulez-Vous on release, ABBA were undergoing a big promotional push in the States at the time of the debut date. Billboard magazine had published a 50-page special on the group earlier in the month, and after a Top 20 American hit with “Does Your Mother Know,” Atlantic released the double-sided “Angeleyes” and “Voulez-Vous” as a single there. It made the Billboard Hot 100 in the week of that first gig, but would only climb to No.64. The album, though, reached No.19 and went gold.
The set for the Seattle show, and the whole tour, featured just about all of the many hits ABBA had amassed by 1979, as well as key album tracks like “As Good As New,” “Rock Me” and “Eagle.” The shows ended with an encore of “The Way Old Friends Do,” “Dancing Queen” and “Waterloo.” After Seattle, it was on to the Portland Opera House, as the ABBA machine rolled across the States for the only time.

ABBA was and still is pure perfection both live and in the studio. They are the cleanest, clearest band I have ever had the extreme pleasure of listening to. I never saw them live and never will, but they truly epitomize pop and rock music at its finest. Agnetha,GOD bless her, had the love within her to record and and release her super excellent “A” album in 2013. She has such a well seasoned and beautiful voice, it is truly amazing. Thank-You ABBA and Agnetha!

Ah, but there was a lot more to the story…in the official Abba history book, there was a reference to their tour bus rolling through my hometown of Nashua New Hampshire to get from Boston to Montreal. However, I saw the list of shows and saw Washington DC scheduled between those 2 shows…which, it turns out, was cancelled because Agnetha was traumatized on the flight from New York City to Boston; it ran into some severe weather (including a tornado that caused fatalities and severe damage in Connecticut) and had to be diverted to Manchester New Hampshire, just making it there before they ran out of fuel. She did the Boston show, but went to hospital afterward while the rest went to Washington, but didn’t perform. They then returned to Boston, and all went to Montreal. Thanks for making me go back and finding out the rest of the story.

I wonder why they only did 14 US shows, I mean you come all that way and don’t do at least 20??? I really think they missed US popularity by waiting until 1979 they had 4 albums by then wonder what happened ..and 1982 I think they were done as a,group… They were bigger than that, they deserved better that that….

In Focus: ABBA in the United States
The highly successful Mamma Mia! movies has helped spark a global ABBA fever, not least in the United States. So join us as we chart ABBA’s history in the land of Uncle Sam, where the group is now bigger than ever.
And, indeed, a hit it was. ‘Waterloo’ reached number six on the Billboard singles chart – with the exception of Blue Swede, who’d recently hit number one with ‘Hooked On A Feeling’, it was the best US chart-placing ever achieved by a Swedish act. Both ABBA and Atlantic Records were eager to build on this success, and in conjunction with the release of the follow-up single ‘Honey, Honey’ the group visited the United States for the first time. As promotional visits go it was a fairly modest outing: just a few days of meet-and-greets and appearances on radio and television. And although the group gained a Top 30 placing for ‘Honey, Honey’, the Waterloo album didn’t do so well. Despite highly favourable reviews – in fact, much more positive than their high-profile counterparts in the Swedish press – the album only reached 145. Although ABBA would go on to better their US album sales considerably, achieving platinum awards for the albums Greatest Hits (1976) and ABBA – The Album (1977), they never quite enjoyed the overwhelming success that was taken for granted in most other countries.
In 1979 ABBA finally embarked on their first concert tour of North America. But although the tour was successful, it was a fairly brief outing and, in fact, signalled the beginning of the end of the group’s history as live performers. After ABBA left America in October 1979, they were never to return again as a foursome. The following year there was one more US Top 10 hit for the group, in the shape of the formidable ‘The Winner Takes It All’, as well as a gold-certified Top 20 album, Super Trouper. But after that, what little profile they had had in the United States soon faded away completely. For the average American, ABBA would largely be remembered as “the disco group who did ‘Dancing Queen’”.
But with the release of ABBA Gold in 1993 (it had been issued in most other countries the previous year), the group’s music gained new popularity. Although upon release it only reached number 63 on Billboard’s Albums chart, it has since gone on to sell more than 32 million copies – more than any of ABBA’s other albums – and has spent more than 900 weeks on the Official Album chart. With the added success of the Mamma Mia! musical, and the Mamma Mia! movies, ABBA’s music has become ubiquitous. So although the American general public may perhaps never completely familiarise themselves with Agnetha, Björn, Benny and Frida as individuals, today they are fully aware that there was plenty more to ABBA than ‘Dancing Queen’.

To celebrate the final show ABBA decided to have a party at the hotel but they waited patiently until the small hours for their crew that was packing all stage gear before the party started. ABBA gave everyone who was involved in the work with the show a silver medallion each. It bore inscription "ABBA" on one side and "Thank you" on the other, accompanied by the actual name of the recipient.
The next day it was ABBA's turn to receive gifts. The group received a silver tray from two Irish fans who had collected money for months from ABBA fans all over Ireland to buy the tray.

Does anyone know who this guy is? We suspect that this guy might be a fan named Phillip Page who was a guest on a Finiish morning show called Ihana aamu (Wonderful Morning). Mr Page looked exactly like the guy in ABBA in Concert (only 25 years older!) and he mentioned that he saw ABBA live in concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York in 1980 (though he surely meant 1979).

I started this thinking it was a regular concert film, because, well, it's literally called "ABBA in Concert", but it turned out to be half documentary, half concert film. What's even better though is that I realized after a few minutes that this is the documentary I watched as a child and have been trying to find again. Somehow a few scenes from it stayed with me and I always remembered them very vividly, but I had no idea what the name of that particular documentary was because I just watched too many.
ABBA in Concert starts out with a bit of background information on the band and their touring process. One of the clips I remembered was Frida saying…

The first part of this is film is borderline experimental in the way clips are nonsensically stitched together to showcase the group in their natural habitat while being inter-spliced with super8 B-roll which was quite interesting to say the least. After that ~10 minute intro it turns into a regular concert film that’s honestly quite fun to watch with Benny Andersson looking like he is having the time any time he is onscreen. Some notable details in this I didn’t want to leave out was that at one point during a kid’s choir the cameraman focused in on a kid with a runny nose for a little too long and then during another song they attempted to emphasize a high hat by zooming in but they zoomed in so much so quickly that the high hat was almost cut off screen, both of which made me laugh a lot HAHA Good stuff

Let me describe how I watched this:
It was a day where I had zero damn emotion I spent the day studying for what seems like a screwy final and I tried to enjoy the ending to a mediocre Assassin’s Creed game while my sister complained about her fear of the character models the whole time. I just wasn’t vibing.
So when 11 pm rolled around, I went for a skate by the beach and sneaked over to chill by the sand even though the area was closed off. It was cold as hell and the wind felt like it was almost stinging my face. So there I was. Cold, bored and kinda sad as I sat their thinking about…

Watch ABBA perform at the peak of their powers when they wowed Wembley Stadium in 1979
27 August 2021, 16:12
By Thomas Curtis-Horsfall
It was the night in London that the Eurovision winners staked their claim as the greatest pop band the world had ever seen.
ABBA were already stratospherically famous here in the UK, but their six-date residency at Wembley Stadium established them as the world's consummate pop act.
The Swedish four-piece made up of Agnetha Fältskog , Björn Ulvaeus , Benny Andersson , and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were returning to England's capital after a lengthy US tour that matched major rock bands of the time like The Rolling Stones and Queen .

Pop acts matching that level of touring commitment was rare, but it made for a perfectly executed run of shows for the expectant English crowd.
And their pop music perfection only exceeded those lofty levels of expectation, especially on the final night of 10th November 1979.
Abba Live At Wembley 1979
ABBA were more renowned for being masters in the studio, sculpting infectious pop songs you could play to anyone, anywhere and get them dancing.

During their marathon world tour (which concluded in Japan the following year), any doubters about their prowess in the live arena were emphatically proved wrong, instead seeing a pop act at the peak of their powers.
The 25-song set kicked off with a punchy rendition of 'Voulez Vous' seeing them squeeze their arsenal of classic tracks like 'Chiquitita', 'Knowing Me, Knowing You', 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)', 'Fernando', and 'SOS' in shortly after.
And that was only the first half of the evening's performance.
It wasn't just titanic pop tracks they played either, finding time to perform lesser known tracks such as 'Eagle', 'Why Did It Have To Be Me?', and 'Thank You For The Music' which would later be released as a single in 1983.
Not that it would've made a difference to the elated crowd, given that they likely knew every word to every song anyway.

Major tours were few and far between given their love for being in the studio, family commitments, and Agnetha's well-noted fear of flying.
All of the reasons stated made their run of Wembley dates even sweeter.

ABBA - Does Your Mother Know & Hole In Your Soul (Live at Wembley 1979)
Interaction between songs was kept to a minimum, with a focus on replicating the iconic sound the four-piece tirelessly perfected inside the studio, and to keep the crowd constantly smiling and singing.
After stomping renditions of 'Does Your Mother Know' and 'Hole In Your Soul', ABBA linked hands, congratulated the Wembley masses, and left the stage.
But of course as we all know there's the encore to come, and the Swedes treated everyone to the holy trinity of 'The Way Old Friends Do', ' Dancing Queen ', and finally ' Waterloo ', taking it back to the start with their breakthrough single.

The performance on 10th November 1979 was so iconic, they in fact released the entire show ABBA: Live At Wembley in September 2014.

Thankfully someone had the foresight of recording the epic final show of their Wembley residency so the world can know what a mighty band they were live.
Though, we should only be thanking ABBA for the music. The greatest pop band of all time.
