Melbourne Tours and Vacation Packages

melbourne travel companies

Repeatedly voted the world's most liveable city, Melbourne prides itself on its style and multifaceted urban culture. With a well-ordered downtown on the Yarra River, surrounded by parks and gardens, the capital of  Victoria  offers world-class art and live entertainment, a serious devotion to good coffee, gorgeous architecture, rich Aboriginal history, and top-notch dining. It's bound to be an urban highlight of any Australia vacation.

Federation Square is the perfect starting point, with its exhibitions, museums, restaurants, bars and shopping. To see Melbourne from a different perspective, visit the Eureka Skydeck for stunning views of the city’s heritage buildings, especially lit up after dark. A new development is the restored Docklands where one can enjoy award-winning restaurants alongside stylish bars and cafes. The city is also known for hosting world-famous events such as the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Open Tennis and the Melbourne Cup.

For something different, head to seaside St. Kilda or funky Fitzroy, colourful neighbourhoods each with a character all its own. St. Kilda has its own beachfront and is home to Luna Park, the renowned amusement park, while Fitzroy is the hub of Melbourne's alternative and Bohemian nightlife.

Outside of Melbourne, don't miss a day trip to Phillip Island to see the world-famous little penguin parade. You can also visit the Yarra Valley for its wineries, Ballarat, for its rich gold rush history, and the beautiful surf beaches and spectacular views of the Great Ocean Road , best known for its unique rock formation, the Twelve Apostles.

Add Melbourne to one of our Goway  Australia vacations  today and start exploring.

Great Ocean Road and Rainforest Walk 1 DAY

The tour is excellent. Although the time spent in each place is short, but you can't help it since there's so much to see in one day. Our guide, Daryl is great, and our fellow travellers too, as they are always on time, so there's no delays in our travel. I love the Loch Ard Gorge scenery the most, that is a must to see, absolutely stunning place.

The Great Ocean Road Melbourne - Adelaide 4 day 3 night Tour

The tour was brilliant. Mick, our driver and guide, was very knowledgeable. He adapted the itinerary by adding in extra little stop-offs where we had time. He was great in keeping us informed about rest stops, food and other fundamental requirements. The actual tur was great - great scenery, wildlife and views of a small area of vast country.

The tour was brilliant. Pierre was a great tour guide. Extremely comfortable van and accommodation.

3 Day Great Ocean Road and Grampians

This was our first time to Australia and we saw & learned so much in four packed days. Pierre was amazing, a non-stop stream of information on just about anything. I was constantly asking questions and never had one that he didn’t have the answer for. For example, while on the road between stops, I asked about the indigenous peoples of Australia and got a half hour thorough (and sometimes sad) lecture on their history. The hotels and included meals were first rate. Highly recommended.

Yarra Valley Winery Tour 1 DAY

This is an excellent day tour! The Yarra Valley itinerary is jam-packed (particularly at Gateway Estate strawberry farm, hehe) and is varied with something for everyone. Would definitely recommend as a fun day out if you are in Melbourne! :)

Southern Capitals - City Meets Bush (5 Days) Tour

Southern Capitals - City Meets Bush (5 Days)

I did not encounter any exciting highlights from the day we leave Sydney to Melbourne. The rest of the tourist told me that the tour highlights would start on the 6th-7th day of the 11-12 days of the entire tour. I only got 5 days tour. ATKing/Trafalgar did not show up nor call the hotel that they could not provide me the service back to the airport on my last day as scheduled. I waited at the lobby and when I call them they told me to get a taxi instead. If they already planted not to show up that morning which the tour guide anticipated), at least call or let the customer know the night before_ this way we don't have to wake up so early and wait for 30-45 minutes at the hotel lobby. Now after my vacation, I still have to file claim for the taxi.. this is hustle. And there is no instructions how to file the claim.

Great Ocean Road & Grampians Adventure Tour

Great Ocean Road & Grampians Adventure

I have just filled in the review for Inspiration I am confused about which company organised it we have Intrepid., Inspiration and Tour Radar. I found the organisation poor and the amount of detail given to passengers lacking and confusing as other passengers had different details at times eg. the number of breakfasts some had 3 others had 5. The tour guide was not given enough details as he often had to ring the office for clarification eg. which motel we were booked into. We were not informed of the starting point and I had to ring to find out and then it was very vague eg told The Melbourne GAllery but we went there and it was closed so looked up the street to find the bus in a gutter with the doors open so assumed it was the one. The guide was excellent and deserves a pat on the back for his patience when he was not informed of details of motels or meal arrangements. We saw a great deal of very interesting views and places. Well worth the upsets and confusion .but very hesitant to use your company again due to lack of organisation .

Reviews of melbourne tours.

Great tour leader - Chris.
An excellent trip from Adelaide to Melbourne. We were a small group that got on well and we were looked after by our guide and driver Craig. He was knowledgeable about the sites we visited and was also able to provide a detailed background to the history of each site and kept us informed regarding the local flora and fauna. The coastline along the coastal road is stunning. The accomadation was good, the younger members of the group used the shared rooms while I opted for my own room (its an age thing ) The first day was a long day travelling but we had plenty of breaks. I would recommend starting from Adelaide rather than Melbourne and finish on a long day driving on the final day I would strongly recommend this trip and the operator David

Australia - Private Travel

Australia will see you wine-tasting in the south, diving the Great Barrier Reef in the north, four-wheel driving in the outback and much more.

Find significant rock art more than 20,000 years old in Kakadu National Park on the coast of Northern Territory.

Wild and wonderful, Australia is unlike anywhere else, yet feels enough like home that you won’t want to leave. You will be in awe of sparkling Sydney in New South Wales, the Opera House dominating its iconic skyline, the bustling neighbourhoods giving way to fabulous beaches. A private boat tour of the harbour, as is a trek along the cliffs overlooking Bondi Beach. In Victoria, the culture and cosmopolitan merriment of Melbourne delights with a diverse mix, via its neighbourhoods and fusion-forward food. Don’t miss out on St. Kilda Beach. The city is your jumping-off point for a private tour of wine country. The real excitement in Australia begins outside city limits, however. Kangaroo Island in South Australia near Adelaide comes by its name honestly, but visitors can see koala bears, seals and dolphins, too. Flinders Chase National Park here is noted for its seasonal penguin colonies and fascinating rock formations. The Blue Mountains in New South Wales, also aptly named thanks to an abundance of eucalyptus trees, is famous for its unique geology – rugged cliffs and rock formations, waterfalls and caves – as well as its Indigenous heritage. The water world that is the Whitsunday Islands in Queensland is a sailor’s paradise, filled with private island resorts and empty beaches.

As the sporting and cultural capital of Australia, Melbourne has plenty to offer visitors from all over the world. From the rooftop bars and designer boutiques that give the city a cosmopolitan feel, to its plentiful array of historical buildings and landmarks — Melbourne has something new to discover on every corner. You can immerse yourself in Melbourne’s rich Victorian heritage at the Royal Exhibition Building, one of the oldest remaining exhibition pavilions in the world. Or walk a mile in the shoes of the early western settlers, who found themselves paying for their crimes in the eerie but fascinating Melbourne Gaol.

Step straight back into the 21st century at the Scienceworks with plenty of interactive exhibits that link Melbourne’s industry, heritage, and applied technology in one place. Or enjoy the wonderful collection of museums and art galleries dotted throughout the city.

If food is your thing, Melbourne will certainly not disappoint. From traditional Aussie fare to cool contemporary cuisine, there’s a wealth of restaurants, cafes, bistros, and bars to keep your taste buds tempted. A nice cool beer is always on the menu, and so are some of the finest wines in Australia, many of which are produced in the neighboring wine regions and breweries of Victoria.

Melbourne Australia

The city of Melbourne was first founded on the Yarra River in 1835 and went on to enjoy significant growth up until 1850, despite remaining a relatively rural settlement. The Gold Rush in 1851, however, totally transformed the area from a colony of smallholdings into a hotbed of immigration and development, which would later establish Melbourne as Australia’s major financial center.

The State of Victoria saw a major influx of new settlers all looking to strike gold! With them came a steady flow of provisions for housing, food, and mining equipment, which helped over £100 million worth of gold to be plucked from the region in the 1850s alone. With Victoria now being a very wealthy colony, the fortunes of the new Victorians flourished.

The International Exhibition of 1880 placed Melbourne firmly on the map as an important trade center for wool, wheat, and other agricultural products, as well as being Australia’s most refined city.

Despite suffering during the depression of the 1930s, the city rose again in the mid to late 20th century, becoming home to headquarters operations for a lot of the country’s largest companies (many of whom are still based in the city today). Now a culturally diverse city offering some of the best living standards throughout Australia, Melbourne has come a long way from its humble rural roots.

Tip: Flying to Australia? We’ve created a super in-depth guide on the best ways to fly to Australia using points and miles.

Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city and is considered by many to be the cultural and sporting capital of Australia. For all of its fine restaurants, elegant buildings and historically important landmarks, the city is also extremely welcoming and has a multicultural feel that appeals to most visitors.

If you’d like to know some useful facts and figures before you visit, here are a few to get you going:

Population: 4.8 million

Area (including greater metropolitan area): 9,992.5 square kilometers

Official Language: English

Other Languages Spoken: Melbourne is home to residents from all over the world, and as many as 251 languages can be heard throughout the city every day.

Religion: The major religion of the country is Christianity. In Melbourne this is broken down into the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Church, Eastern Orthodox, and the Uniting churches.

Current Prime Minister: Malcolm Turnbull

Time Zone: The standard time zone for Melbourne is UTC+10:00 (Coordinated Universal Time), changing to UTC+11:00 when daylight savings time (DST) is in operation.

Currency: Australian Dollar AUD

Country Dialing Code Prefix: +61

Emergency Numbers: Dial 000 and ask for the service you require (police, fire service, or ambulance service)

Open space: 9% (including parks and gardens)

Taxi Cabs: 7,544

Cafes and Restaurants: 2,336

Beaches: Over 30 designated public beaches plus many more private inlets and coastal spaces.

Australia may well be the smallest continent on Earth, but it is a vast region surrounded by water on all sides. Most visitors reach Australia by air, and flight times can be pretty long even from neighboring countries.

Flying Into Melbourne

Opened in the 1970s, Melbourne Airport (also known as Tullamarine Airport) is the only international airport serving the city of Melbourne , and the second busiest airport in Australia .

Avalon Airport, Essendon Airport, and Moorabbin Airport also service the city, but are limited to internal or cargo flights only.

Tullamarine Airport provides international flights to destinations all over the world and is serviced by the following airlines:

Air Asia, Aircalin, Air Canada, Air China, Air India, Air Mauritius, Air New Zealand, Air Vanuatu, Capital Airlines, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Emirates, Etihad, Fiji Airlines, Garuda Indonesia Airlines, Hainan Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Japan Airlines, Jetstar Airlines, Latam Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Qantas Airways, Royal Brunei Airlines, Scoot, Sichuan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Sri Lankan Airlines, Thai Airlines, United Airlines, Vietnam Airlines, Virgin Australia, Xiamen Air

Once you’ve landed on Australian shores, finding your way to the city of Melbourne is quite straightforward.

Traveling From the Airport to the City

Melbourne Airport offers a dedicated shuttle service from the terminal to the city itself. The SkyBus is the main airport shuttle, which leaves from 2 locations outside the terminals and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. SkyBus runs to and from Southern Cross Station and leaves every 10 minutes for most of the day.

Tickets are $19 one-way or $38 return for adults; up to 4 children can travel for free. The journey time is usually between 20-40 minutes depending on traffic.

There are other shuttle buses available that run directly to some of the inner-city hotels. Prices range from $18-$25 depending on destination, and there is no need to change buses at Southern Cross Station.

Public transport can also take you from the airport into the CBD (Central Business District). Using a low-cost myki card, you can enjoy a leisurely route on both the train and the bus to reach your accommodation. The 901 bus to Broadmeadows station will let you catch a train for the remaining 40-minute trip to Flinders Street in the CBD. Services run at 15-minute intervals during the week, and every half hour at night and on weekends. Costs vary depending on your destination.

There are currently no direct train links between Melbourne Airport and the city center. If you do want to take the train, you would need to hop on the 901 bus to Broadmeadows Station and then catch the Craigieburn Line train into the city center. You’d need to allow well over an hour for this journey.

There are plenty of taxis located in designated ranks outside the exits of Melbourne Airport. The journey can take anywhere between 40-60 minutes (or sometimes more during busy periods), and it will cost you around $60 for a single journey.

You can pre-book a taxi to pick up you and your luggage from inside the airport if this is simpler. Taxi services like rideways.com and taxicode.com will allow you to book your pickup online.

Uber drivers also operate in and around Melbourne, and you can arrange your pickup simply by using the app on your Smartphone.

Trams are a major form of public transportation in Melbourne, with a network covering over 250 kilometers in the metro area. The City Trams are free, but they don’t extend all they way to the airport. You would need to reach Southern Cross station before enjoying a tram ride or 2.

Melbourne Tram

Once you’ve arrived in the city, there are plenty of options for affordable, reliable, and easily accessible public transportation.

To travel on the Melbourne bus system, you’ll need to purchase a myki card. These cost $6 for adults and $3 for children, and they need to keep a positive balance in order for you to travel. Your myki card can be topped up at over 800 retailers throughout the city. Alternatively, you can purchase a myki explorer pack that combines a ready-to-use myki card with helpful information and special offers for visitors to the city. When you leave, you can even donate your myki card to charity.

Buses run all over the city from around 6:00am until 9:00pm most days, and the Night Network runs all night metropolitan trains, trams, and late night buses on weekends.

You can find more information about bus routes and timetables at Public Transport Victoria .

Trams have been an iconic sight in the city since 1885, and the network now offers over 490 trams covering 24 routes and 1,763 tram stops. It is the largest urban tramway network in the world…and better still, the City Tram Zone is entirely free to travel on! This makes it a great way to explore the inner-city areas. Trams run most days from 8:45am until around 4:00pm.

Again, further details on tram routes and timetables can be found at Public Transport Victoria .

Taxis and Ubers are also plentiful on the streets of Melbourne, and you can hail a car, pick one up at a designated taxi rank, or pre-book a trip online. Melbourne taxis display a light on top of the cab roof and are usually painted yellow, silver, or white. Drivers are required to wear a uniform in the city and display an identity card on the dashboard at all times.

Information about taxi firms, fares, and regulations can be found at the Taxi Services Commission website.

Melbourne’s metro trains run between the outer suburbs and Flinders Street Station. The City Loop is Melbourne’s very own underground system; although small, it offers quick and easy access to 5 stations within the central business district. If you want to travel further into the suburbs or out into Victoria, Southern Cross Station is the main hub for both regional and interstate rail services in and out of Melbourne. You can use your myki card on trains covering the metro area, but trains into the suburbs and beyond will need additional tickets.

For more information about ticketing, fares, and timetables, visit the Public Transport Victoria website.

Hot Tip: Don’t miss out on earning lots of valuable points and use a super rewarding card for your purchases abroad, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card which earns you 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Travel, 3x points on dining, and 2x points on all other travel purchases. This is our #1 recommended card. But – at the very least, you’ll want to use a credit card that has no foreign transaction fees!

Melbourne CBD

Melbourne is collection of different neighborhoods, each one bringing their own unique character and charm into the city. To really get to know Melbourne, spend some time moving between the different suburbs and developing a real taste for the Melbourne way of life.

Melbourne CBD

The Central Business District (or CBD) is the beating heart of the city of Melbourne. From the open spaces, royal gardens, and docklands eateries to the high-end shopping opportunities in Bourke Street Mall and the Melbourne Centre, the city has plenty to see and do. With first class restaurants, cool cafes, boutiques, and old arcades on every corner, a day spent exploring the CBD is a day well spent.

If you want to step back in time, the Old Melbourne Gaol and the Melbourne Aquarium sit nestled among the modern commercial buildings, adding gravity to the district. Meanwhile, the museums and galleries of Federation Square add grandeur. Students, families , and travelers are often seen mixing with commuters on their lunch hours — the CBD is open to everybody.

Where to stay:

  • The Langham
  • Mercure Welcome

An inner suburb of Melbourne, St Kilda is a beachside neighborhood frequented by backpackers, families, and anyone looking to enjoy the great outdoors. From the glorious mansions of days gone by to the historic Sea Baths and wild rides at Luna Park, St Kilda has a traditional seaside resort feel about it.

Sip coffee on the sea front while you watch the yachts sail by, or sample some of the great cake shops to be found on Acland and Carlisle streets. When night falls, the area’s pubs and music venues fill up with loud music and late night revelers.

  • The Blackman
  • Melbourne Parkview

Carlton is well known for the wide selection of cafes and restaurants tucked within the Lygon Street Italian precinct, giving this area the local moniker of “Little Italy.” It is also home to the historic Melbourne General Cemetery and Princes Park, playground for Melbourne’s very own Carlton Football Club.

With plenty of leafy avenues and open spaces to enjoy, Carlton Gardens themselves contain the contemporary Melbourne Museum and the domed 19th Century Royal Exhibition Building that has World Heritage status. Carlton is vibrant and friendly, with a truly cosmopolitan feel.

  • Carlton Terrace
  • Rydges on Swanston
  • Best Western Plus

Fitzroy is home to all things alternative in the city of Melbourne. If something is cool and kooky, you can find it here. Secondhand book stalls, vintage clothing stores, quirky boutiques, and independent retailers can all be seen on Brunswick Street. Or stop for a bite in any of the awe-inspiring vegan, vegetarian, or alternative cafes and restaurants dotting the area.

Fitzroy is renowned throughout the whole of Australia for its street art, music scene, and bohemian feel, and it is also the main home of Melbourne’s Fringe Festival . Come and enjoy cocktails with the cool creatives just a short bus ride from the CBD.

  • Quest Royal Gardens
  • Melbourne Metropole Central

Richmond is a multicultural suburb that welcomes residents from all over the world. It’s best known for Victoria Street, or “Little Saigon,” which is brimming with Asian grocery stores and eateries serving pho and bánh mì. If you’re looking to grab a bargain, the Bridge Road factory outlets offer great valuing clothing, furniture, and design stores.

Many of the historic old buildings that formerly filled the area have been given a new lease on life as cool bars and happening music venues. A little rough around the edges, Richmond has a young but edgy vibe.

  • Andre’s Mews
  • Richmond Hill Hotel

Williamstown

Williamstown is a highly desirable suburb to visit, and it gets pretty busy all year round. Located right on the waterfront, Williamstown offers a rare combination of open spaces, good facilities, and a wide variety of options all within easy reach of the CBD.

It has lots of residential areas, so Williamstown is a nice place to stop for coffee or ice cream, and the area has a safe, welcoming feel to it. Parking is a nightmare though, and everywhere from the beach to the street can be packed on weekends.

  • Quest Williamstown
  • Punthill Apartment Hotel

South Yarra

South Yarra is an upmarket suburb of the city that is popular with aspirational professionals and young families. Art deco apartments facing the Yarra are highly sought after, as are well-preserved mansions like the famous Como House.

The streets here are filled with swanky boutiques, fine restaurants, art galleries, and cocktail bars, and Toorak Road or Chapel Street are the places to see and be seen. The Royal Botanic Gardens meet South Yarra at its most northerly point, making them the perfect place to enjoy a jog or picnic away from the apartments and nearby streets.

  • Oaks South Yarra
  • Hotel Claremont

The Docklands area of the city has been heavily regenerated over the past 20 years and is now a contemporary development full of high-rise apartments and office blocks. Dominated by the colorful Melbourne Star Observation Wheel that keeps a watchful eye over proceedings, the area is now full of big-name shops and ample opportunities for waterside dining.

Pedestrianized plazas are family friendly, and there are public murals, sculptures, and light displays to enjoy. This area is mostly a resort destination, but has a family feel encouraged by visitors coming to see sporting events at Etihad Stadium or enjoy Harbor Town’s mini-golf and sports car simulators.

  • Crowne Plaza
  • Vibe Savoy Hotel
  • The Great Southern Hotel

Situated on the waterfront, Southbank is renowned for great restaurants, amazing public art displays, and upmarket shopping opportunities. The crowds here are sophisticated and worldly; they come to enjoy cultural venues like the Malthouse Theatre (based in a restored brewery) and the state-of-the-art Melbourne Recital Centre’s classical concerts.

The Crown Casino Complex is also nearby, making it a popular part of the city for high rollers. If you want to ensure you’re caught looking super-cool, check out the many al fresco fine dining experiences on the promenade, or spend your night sipping craft beer in a cargo shed.

Visit: Open daily from 10:00am to as late as 9:00pm on some days.

Get There: Offers over 1,500 car parking spaces, but can also be reached by any tram or bus line.

3. Melbourne Central

The Melbourne Central shopping center is a large modern complex featuring shops, offices, and access to the city loop underground railway below. Refurbished in 2005, the complex now offers a wide range of shops and food stalls that are well-suited to their central location within the CBD.

Almost as well-known as some of the shops are the architectural delights on display. Coop’s Shot Tower, The Marionette Watch, The Glass Cone, and The Vertical Cone have all been built over the years to add interest to this city center retail and commercial complex.

4. Bourke Street Mall

Bourke Street is one of the main thoroughfares in Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD). It is well-regarded as a hub of entertainment and shopping in the city, and is a popular tourist destination. In recent years the area has become pedestrianized and is only accessible on foot or by tram, allowing visitors to explore the area at their leisure.

If you are looking to enjoy the full city center experience, Bourke Street has everything you need: great shops, fine food, and plenty of the authentic Melbourne atmosphere.

Get There: Nearest stations are Flagstaff Station or Southern Cross Station. Trams 86, 95, and 96 all stop in Bourke Street itself.

5. DFO South Wharf

Centrally located in Melbourne CBD and next to the popular upmarket Docklands suburb, DFO South Wharf is a factory outlet complex offering well-known branded goods for majorly discounted prices. Similar to the outlet stores normally found on the outskirts of major towns and cities, the DFO South Wharf offers all the fun of bargain hunting right in the city center. It also hosts a variety of cafes, bistros, and restaurants so you can enjoy a whole day’s shopping under one roof.

Visit: Stores open from 10:00am until 6:00pm every day, except Friday when they offer late night shopping until 9:00pm.

Get There: Nearest train station is Southern Cross, which is about a 15-minute walk away. Or, hop on any trams traveling along Swanston Street and St Kilda Road that stop at Federation Square, or the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets.

6. Prahran Market

Known as “the food lovers market,” Prahran Market offers a wide range of high quality fruit and vegetables, certified organic produce, sustainable seafood, free-range meat and poultry, and more. Having been on the same Commercial Road site for over 125 years, the market offers a variety of stalls and shops selling every type of food you could imagine. The market also has a dedicated Market Square where there are community performances, cafes, and a children’s playground.

The Queen Victoria Market is a major landmark in Melbourne and the largest open air market in the Southern Hemisphere. Standing at around 7 hectares, the marketplace is both historically and architecturally important (and is actually listed on the Victorian Heritage Register). Visitors can expect to find a wide variety of fresh, high-quality produce and specialty shopping including clothing, art, and interior goods.

Visit: Open from 6:00am most mornings, closing times vary depending on the day. Night market during the summer months on Wednesdays from 5:00pm until 10:00pm. Closed Mondays.

8. The Rose Street Market

Rose Street Market is an artists’ market where everything on sale is handmade. Widely known as a platform for emerging artists, it is a great place to find one-off pieces of art, unusual fashion, unique jewelry, and work from local photographers.

Occupying an abandoned yard in Fitzroy, Rose Street Market is the creative hub of the CBD and the city’s most important home for independent art and design.

Visit: Market held every Saturday from 11:00am until 5:00pm.

Get There: Best reached by tram using the 96 from Bourke St (get off at stop 16) or 11 from Collins St. (get off at stop 17).

9. Fitzroy Market

The Fitzroy Market  is a community project that has been running since 2010. Selling a variety of secondhand clothing and goods, handmade items, and homemade food, the market is put on by the community and benefits partner organizations in education. There is always a welcoming atmosphere, lots of live music and entertainment, and a real neighborly spirit, making the market a lovely place to be on a sunny Saturday in Melbourne.

Visit: Market held on the 3rd Saturday of every month from 10:00am until 3:00pm at the Fitzroy Primary School.

Get There: Take trams 86 (travel to Smith St), 96 (travel down Nicholson St), and 112 (travel down Brunswick St). Or, buses 200, 201, 203, 205, and 207 all stop at nearby Johnston Street.

Melbourne at Night

Visiting foreign lands can be an expensive business, especially if you’re planning to spend any time in a major city. While Melbourne may not be the most expensive destination in the world, it certainly isn’t the cheapest either. Try these top hacks to help your vacation budget stretch a little further.

1. Explore Your New Surroundings

Getting your bearings needn’t be boring. Melbourne is a wonderful city to just roam around and explore for free. Take in the city center and browse the streets as you get a feel for that authentic Melbourne atmosphere. When you run out of steam, there are plenty of parks and green spaces to relax in.

2. Go to the Museums

While away the hours taking in the free galleries and museums dotted thought the city. The National Gallery Of Victoria has a vast collection of art from all around the world, and The Australian Centre for The Moving Image offers incredible interactive exhibits.

3. Take a Trip to the Beach

Melbourne may be a vibrant and bustling city, but you’re never more than a few miles away from the nearest beach. Australia has some of the finest beaches in the world, and the coast surrounding Melbourne is certainly no exception. Enjoy free sunbathing, surfing, or swimming at any of the beaches surrounding the city.

4. Soak up the Arts Scene

Melbourne is a very creative city full of musicians, magicians, buskers, breakdancers, and much more. You can catch any number of free outdoor performances all across the CBD and into the suburbs. Bourke Street, Southbank, and Federation Square are virtually guaranteed to have something going on nearly every day of the week.

5. Visit the Markets

Melbourne is full of amazing markets, and you’ll be able to find one that offers everything you need on pretty much any day of the week. From the vast and historical Queen Victoria Market to the foodies’ favorites at Prahran Market and everything in between, you will never be short of a bargain or 2.

6. Shop the Outlets

DFO South Wharf is a shopping complex dedicated to designer bargains. With 3 levels of shops and hundreds of outlets to choose from (as well as cafes and eateries), a visit to the DFO is a great day out.

7. Eat Away From the Riverside

Those waterside views will definitely add extra bucks to your brunch. If you want to enjoy fine food for less money, eat away from the docklands, Bourke Street, and main streets when you can.

8. Shop Around for Somewhere to Stay

Like many big cities, staying in the main tourist districts can be expensive. In Melbourne, even the hostels can be on the pricey side, so check out backpacker groups on social media for the best deals, or see if you can find an apartment share for your time in the city.

9. Go to a Gig

The north side of the city is famous for its live music venues and bohemian atmosphere. Dance the night away with free or cheap tickets to any of the area’s many music bars including the Tote , the Evelyn , Bar Open , or the Night Cat .

10. Eat the Oysters

If you want to live the high life without paying a high price, try eating oysters with a glass of Prosecco while overlooking the Yarra at Arbory Bar and Eatery , Melbourne’s longest and most affordable bar.

11. Drink Coffee

Melbourne has an uber cool cafe culture, and you can quickly become a complete coffee expert by enjoying free coffee tasting sessions at many of the first-class coffee shops and roasters throughout the city.

12. See the City From the Water

If you want to get a different perspective of the city, hop on a ferry from Southgate to Williamstown and explore the suburb’s historic waterfront, as well as the famous Castlemaine warship for just $18.

13. Make Use of the Visitor Shuttle

The visitor shuttle stops at 13 points around the city and offers an audio commentary for your journey. Learn about the history of Melbourne at your leisure, and jump on and off as you please.

14. Workout for Free

Princes Park is home to the Carlton football club and is a stunning place to go for a run, bike ride, or even a workout in the outdoor gyms during your stay in Melbourne.

15. Work the Transport System

Travel is not hugely expensive in Melbourne, but you can save money by taking advantage of the free trams, free off-peak travel, and the easy walking distance between many of the tourist areas.

Want to impress your hosts when you finally touch down in Melbourne? Wow them with your superior knowledge using these fun facts.

1. Traffic Management

Melbourne is home to the first ever traffic lights installed in Australia. They were first tested in mid-1928 at the intersection of Swanston and Flinders streets to address the growing problems of simultaneous vehicle control and increased pedestrian traffic.

2. Chocolate History

Chocolate lovers have a lot to thank Melbourne for. Chocolate makers MacRobertson’s Steam Confectionery Works, located in the suburb of Fitzroy, were the original inventors of the Cherry Ripe in 1924, the Crunchie in 1929, and the Freddo Frog in 1930. They continued to produce these for many years until the company was sold to Cadbury in 1967.

3. Name Change

Melbourne was originally named Batmania after one of the city’s founding fathers, John Batman. Upon discovering the first settlements of central Melbourne, he declared the location as being a “nice place for a village.” The name never stuck, however, and the land would later be christened Melbourne, after Lord Melbourne, then the Prime Minister of Britain.

4. Heating Up

Melbourne can get pretty hot. As you would expect anywhere on the Australian continent, the sun is almost always shining on this city. Sometimes, though, it gets a little too hot to handle: the maximum temperature ever recorded in Melbourne was 115.5 degrees Fahrenheit (46.4 degrees Celsius) in 2009!

5. Big Window

The world’s largest stained-glass ceiling is located in Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria. It was designed by Australian artist Leonard French, and his geometric masterpiece is known as the Persian Rug of Light. It measures a whopping 60.9 x 15.24 meters and features 224 tiles in a kaleidoscope of colors.

6. Feeling Foxy

According to the RSPCA, Melbourne is officially the fox capital of the world. There are apparently anywhere between 6 and 23 foxes per square kilometer in the urban area of the city. Despite these numbers, it’s still quite rare to see one, and the urban fox is very much revered.

7. Bath Time

Melbourne used to be very well known for its public bathing. Residents would happily jump in the Yarra, the sea, and the City Baths to keep cool on hot sunny days. Such was its popularity that there are still more than 1,800 bathing boxes scattered around the city’s beaches.

8. Fancy a Beer

The now world-famous Australian beer Fosters was first brewed in Melbourne in 1888. Even thought it was originally brewed by American brothers William and Ralph Foster right here in the city, it went on to become synonymous with the “Aussie” love for a nice cold tinnie.

9. One for Sport Lovers

As a city, Melbourne is utterly obsessed with sports and is the only city in the world to have 5 international standard sporting facilities on the fringe of its central business district: Melbourne Cricket Ground, Docklands Stadium, Rod Laver Arena, Hisense Arena, and Olympic Park in Melbourne Park.

10. No Down Time

Keeping with the sports theme, one of Australia’s most famous games, Australian Rules Football was invented in Melbourne in 1858 by Tom Wills and his friends as a way to keep cricketers fit during the off-season.

Great Ocean Road

You can’t come all the way to Melbourne and not explore at least a little bit more of Victoria. Even if you don’t stay long, try and take at least one of these awesome day trips away from the city during your visit.

1. Great Ocean Road, Victoria

As one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world, a trip along the Great Ocean Road is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Stretching from the towns of Torquay to Nelson, the 249-mile roadway winds alongside the wild and windswept Southern Ocean coast of Victoria.

The road will take you through Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, the Great Otway National Park, and the Shipwreck Coast as you explore local towns and villages, stopping at iconic locations along the way.

The Great Ocean Road is approximately 2 hours south from Melbourne CBD, and you can spend days traveling its entire length at your leisure.

2. Yarra Valley

The Yarra Valley is packed with award-winning vineyards, tasting rooms, and wineries. Many visitors to the region come to learn about the fermentation process and join in with an organized wine tour. There are many to choose from throughout the region, from a simple half-day tour to a full week away in a winery.

Many of the vineyards have been transformed into exclusive estates, offering spas, restaurants, and even rooms for visitors to stay with them overnight. Prices will vary depending on the tour and location you choose, but half-day private tours start at around $50 per person, while overnight stays will obviously be much more. Find out about tours in the region at Yarra Valley Wine .

3. Mornington Peninsula

Just an hour outside Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula offers miles of stunning coastlines and pretty seaside towns, as well as local wineries and impressive restaurants.

Go cycling, horseback riding, golfing, surfing, or visit a winery or a national park…or just relax on the beach. The Mornington Peninsula has something for everyone. You can drive there from Melbourne using the M1 and the Western Port Highway. If you want to take the train, you can connect from Frankston through Hastings to Stony Point on Westernport Bay. Or if you would rather go by bus, they travel from Melbourne to all areas, and local bus routes operate around each Mornington Peninsula village.

4. Phillip Island

Phillip Island is a very popular day trip destination from Melbourne. You can watch the Penguin Parade from Summerland beach, or spot the fur seals gathering off the coast from The Nobbies Centre . If you’d rather, you could simply stop and spend some time with the koalas at the Conservation Centre . The island is also well known for motorcycle and car racing events held at the Phillip Island Circuit if man-made entertainment is more your thing.

Around a 90-minute drive away from Melbourne, you can reach the island by car using the M1, the M420, and the A420. Private coach trips from the city are also available, or you may be able to access the island using the V-Line train service . Tickets for the attractions vary in price depending on what you wish to see. General viewing tickets for the Penguin Parade are $25 per adult, whereas a guided ranger tour of the parks could be as much as $90 per adult. Find prices, times, and park information at the Phillip Island website .

5. Dandenong Ranges

The Dandenong Ranges make for a great day out away from hustle and bustle of the city. Soaring forests, fern glades, and some of the world’s tallest flowering trees can all be found here. There are also pretty villages and rustic farms, and you can jump aboard the historic Puffing Billy Steam Train to see them all. A trip on the steam train will cost from $59 per adult and $29.50 per child.

The Dandenong Ranges are about an hour away from Melbourne by car using the M1 freeway, Ferntree Gully Road, and the Burwood Highway. If you’d rather use public transport, you can also get there using the  V-Line train service  from Melbourne. There are many options for day tours and accommodations for longer stays.

Melbourne has relatively low crime figures for a city of its size, meaning that you should be able to relax and enjoy your time there. That said, all travel comes with risks, and you should always be aware of your surroundings and take the appropriate precautions.

Keep Safe in the City

  • In a crowded area, stay aware of what is going on around you and keep together in groups. If there is a chance you could become separated, arrange a meeting point prior to travel.
  • Pickpockets and thieves operate all over the world. To ensure that you are not a target, keep your mobile phones, wallets , and purses safely tucked away, and never leave them in plain sight.
  • If you are eating out, keep your handbags or briefcases out of sight under your chair in bars and restaurants, or use a table clip if the venue provides one.
  • Never accept drinks from strangers and always keep yours with you in crowded bars.

Visiting Public Places

  • Never leave your bags unattended.
  • Always carry your wallet or purse close to you.

  • Do not carry large amounts of cash on you, and if you are using an ATM, be sure nobody is looking over your shoulder as you enter your PIN.

At Your Hotel

  • Always keep your passports and other valuables in a locked room safe if available.
  • Keep a note of your hotel’s phone number and address with you at all times. If you get lost, you can use this to find your way back.

The National Security Hotline is the single point of contact for the public to report possible signs of terrorism. It also provides information to callers on a wide range of national security matters. Visit http://www.nationalsecurity.gov.au or call the National Security Hotline at 1-800-123-400.

Weather Conditions

Melbourne has a hot climate and strong UV rays all year round, which may be warmer than some visitors are used to. To ensure you’re not at risk from the sun, always take the following precautions:

  • Slip-on sun-protective clothing.
  • Slop on SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen at least 20 minutes before sun exposure, and reapply every 2 hours outdoors.
  • Slap on a wide-brimmed hat that shades your face, neck, and ears.
  • Seek shade.
  • Slide on sunglasses.

At the Beach

Only swim on lifeguard-patrolled beaches between the red and yellow flags. Remember to always apply proper protection against the sun, even on cloudy days.

Bites and Stings

If you are concerned about a bite or sting, visit the Symptom Checker at healthdirect.gov.au . If you or anyone in your party is suffering from chest pain, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, turning blue, or is badly bleeding, call 000 immediately.

Forest Fires

Bush fires are a real concern in Victoria. Before you travel, make sure you know how to safely deal with fire in a bush environment and what to do if a fire begins to spread. You can find all the information you need on the Forest Fire Management Victoria website.

Excellent trip

I found the overall trip excellent. I believe Diane's professionalism, inclusive personality and ability to relate to all contributed to this. She worked to ensure the group was cohesive without individuals impinging on the personal space of others etc. a good skill to have and one she applied effectively. Kate, Canada/Alaska

Fantastic first solo trip

I had a fantastic trip. Absolutely loved Canada and Alaska. It's the first time I have travelled solo and was pleasantly surprised to find a bunch of people that all got on so well. Diane our host was great. She did a good job of getting us altogether for meals, excursions, shopping trips etc. I liked that she quietly got things done without being loud or "in-your-face". She was good at being one of us as well as our leader. Wendy, Canada/Alaska

Great holiday

What a great trip! I experienced so much and participated in all that was offered. I had read and reviewed as much as time allowed me but was not prepared for what the trip gave me and that is a better understanding of the beautiful people of both countries. - Lesley on Vietnam/Cambodia

In good company

I thought the suggestions for optional things to do, in the "free" time were very good. So good, we really ended up with very little free time. So much to do! - Mary on Vietnam

Great time together

I found the trip interesting and eye opening with a great overview of both Vietnam and Cambodia. The other travellers on the trip were fabulous and we had a great time together. - Anonymous on Vietnam/Cambodia

The 21 Best Things to Do in Melbourne

The towering skyline of Melbourne, Australia on a bright summer day

Melbourne is one of the funkiest cities in Australia . From its cool architecture to its robust art scene with hip cafés and music, Melbourne is often considered the cultural capital of Australia. Its narrow lanes, covered in world-class street art, hide beautiful cafés and beer gardens.

The city and I mix well together and it’s my favorite spot in the country. With plenty of culture, activities, art exhibitions, and live music, you could easily spend over a week here and not get bored.

Melbourne has a European feel to it and is popular with backpackers and young travelers looking to enjoy its laid-back vibe.

With so much to see and do, I wanted to share my list of the best things to do in Melbourne to help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time in this fun city!

1. Take a Street Art Tour

Cool street art and murals on a narrow road in Melbourne, Australia

If you’re on a tighter budget, take a free walking tour around the city instead. I’m Free Walking Tours offers a couple of different free walking tours that will give you a fun and educational introduction to the city and its history. You’ll learn a lot about the city and get access to an expert local guide who can answer any questions you have. Just be sure to tip your guide at the end!

2. Catch a Moonlight Movie in the Park

During the summer, there are nightly movies (most of them major Hollywood features) in the Royal Botanic Gardens. You can bring your own food and drinks (including alcohol) and have a cozy picnic while watching some great movies. Think of it like going to the drive-in but without the car. Just make sure to check the weather in advance and to bring a blanket to sit on as well as a sweater (it can get a little chilly sometimes). They will cancel if it rains a lot but not if it’s light rain so be sure to bring a rain jacket (or reschedule) if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Central Lawn Royal Botanic Gardens. For dates and times, visit moonlight.com.au. Tickets start at 25 AUD.

3. Wander Queen Victoria Market

This outdoor market is the largest open-air market in the southern hemisphere. Made up of both indoor and outdoor areas and occupying two entire city blocks, it’s a mix of food sellers and knick-knack vendors — think flea market meets food market. During the week, the food hall is the main draw, but the weekend offerings are bigger as sellers fill up the outdoor vending space.

When you’re in the food hall, be sure to get some free wine samples from Swords Wines; the staff is friendly and the wine is cheap (I bought two bottles for some afternoon drinking in the park!). And don’t miss the jam donuts either. They’ve been a staple there for over 50 years!

And during warmer months, don’t miss the Summer Night Market. This popular night market runs every Wednesday from 5pm-10pm (November 23-March 15). Free to enter, there is live music as well and tons of different food stalls, from dumplings to gyros, burritos, ice cream, BBQ, and more.

Queen St, +61-3-9320-5822, qvm.com.au. Check the website for seasonal hours and events.

4. Visit the State Library of Victoria

The stately and spacious interior of the State Library in Melbourne, Australia

328 Swanston St, +61 3-8664-7000, slv.vic.gov.au. Open 10am-6pm.

5. Take the City Circle Tram

The City Circle Tram is a free hop-on/hop-off service between Melbourne’s sightseeing attractions. The route includes Federation Square, the Old Treasury Building, Parliament House, and the Princess Theater. There’s a running recorded commentary as you pass or stop at a place of historical, cultural, or architectural significance. It’s a free, fun way to see the main sights and get a feel for the city without having to spend any money!

The tram operates from daily 9:30am-6pm (9pm Thursday-Saturday).

6. Relax in Federation Square

Right along the route of the free City Circle train and across the street from Flinders Street Station lies Federation Square. Opened in 1968, this open square spans around 8 acres and serves up stellar people-watching. I like to take lunch here and just watch the city go by. Below the square on the river are also a number of restaurants and outdoor bars. In the summer, there are often all kinds of different events here as well.

7. Visit the National Gallery of Victoria

Located in Federation Square, the National Gallery of Australia is the largest, oldest, and most-visited art museum in the country (over 3 million people visit each year). It’s home to over 75,000 works including modern and contemporary art, sculptures, paintings, and works from aboriginal and indigenous artists. You can see pretty much everything in a couple hours. It’s one of the best free activities in the city.

180 St Kilda Rd, +61 3-8620-2222, ngv.vic.gov.au. Open daily 10am-5pm. Admission is free (temporary exhibits may have an additional charge).

8. Wander the Royal Botanic Gardens

The Royal Botanic Gardens covers 86 acres and is home to over 8,500 different plant species including flowers, shrubs, and trees from across the country and around the world. Hanging out here and wandering around is one of my favorite activities in Melbourne. It’s walking distance from the city center and is a nice place to spend some time strolling around, relaxing, and reading. Free guided walks or self-guided audio tours are also available from the main visitors center.

Birdwood Ave, +61 3-9252-2300, rbg.vic.gov.au. Open daily from 7:30am-5pm. Admission is free.

9. Admire Flinders Street Station

The historic Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, Australia at night with traffic passing by

10. Enjoy the Café Scene

While I’m not a coffee drinker (tea all the way!), even I could see that the café and coffee culture in this city is part of its soul. Everyone here loves to have coffee and a snack while doing work or chatting in some arty café. Try a Melbourne ‘Magic’ which is their version of a flat white; it has espresso coffee, but less added milk than a cafe latte and way less foam than a cappuccino. The Flat White was supposedly (this is disputed by Kiwis) invented in Sydney and this is Melbourne’s version.

You can also take a café tour with Café Culture Walk to learn more about why Melbournians love their cafés so much and then spend an afternoon with a good book at your new favorite spot.

11. See the Como House and Gardens

Over 160 years old, this regal estate blends a mix of classic Italianate architecture and Australian regency. It’s considered the best of the historic houses in the city and offers a rare glimpse at the luxurious and opulent life of high society in 19th-century Australia. Guided tours are available for 15 AUD if you want to learn more about this beautiful mansion and its history.

Williams Rd &, Lechlade Ave, +61 3-9656-9889, nationaltrust.org.au/places/como-house-and-garden. Gardens are open Monday-Saturday from 9am-4pm and Sundays from 10am-4pm. Admission to the gardens is free.

12. Visit the Immigration Museum

Founded in 1998, The Immigration Museum is located in the Old Customs House and features exhibitions about Australia’s immigration history. Europeans started flocking to the country in 1788, bringing with them their own cultures that eventually swept the island and displaced the aboriginal peoples who called the island home for over 50,000 years. I really enjoyed learning about the people who left their homes to move across the known world, undertaking the risky voyage and uprooting their entire lives.

400 Flinders St, +61 3-8341-7777, museumsvictoria.com.au/immigrationmuseum. Open daily from 10am-5pm. Admission is 15 AUD.

13. Hit the Beach

A bright blue sky over St Kilda beach in Melbourne, Australia

14. Party in St. Kilda

If you’re looking to enjoy Melbourne’s famous nightlife, head to St. Kilda. The area is home to tons of inexpensive restaurants, bars, and clubs. If you want to find Melbourne’s wild side, this is where it will be. ( Nomads Melbourne is one of my favorite places to go party if you want to hang out with other travelers — and a few locals! Their downstairs bar is popular and has cheap drinks.)

15. Enjoy the Fitzroy Gardens

Created in 1848, Fitzroy Gardens is a massive Victorian-era garden that covers over 65 acres. It’s one of Melbourne’s most historic and beautiful gardens and is meant to resemble the English gardens the early settlers left behind.

The area was originally a swamp but was painstakingly cultivated into the beautiful and sprawling garden that exists today. There are walking paths, greenhouses, cottages, and lots of flower gardens and greenspace. It definitely feels like an English garden!

Wellington Parade, +61 3-9658-9658, fitzroygardens.com. Open 24/7. Admission is free.

16. Get Cultural at the Melbourne Museum

The Melbourne Museum showcases Australian social history, indigenous cultures, science, and the environment. The highlight of the museum, for me, was the extensive Bunjilaka Aboriginal Culture Center, which highlights aboriginal culture, art, and history. They also have a children’s section that’s great for anyone traveling with kids. There are also regular visiting and temporary exhibitions as well, so be sure to check their website to see what’s going on during your visit.

11 Nicholson St, +61 3-8341-7777, museumsvictoria.com.au/melbournemuseum. Open daily from 10am-5pm. Admission is 15 AUD.

17. Go On a Wine Tour

Wine tours are super popular in this region. The Mornington Peninsula in the outer suburbs of Melbourne is a world-famous wine-producing region. Located 45 minutes from the city, it’s home to over 40 wineries. There are a lot of day trips available to the Yarra Valley too (which is where most tours take you). If you don’t have your own car or don’t feel like spending the night in the area, day trips from Melbourne cost 150-225 AUD per person for a full-day tour (8-10 hours).

18. Take a Day Trip to Phillip Island

The scenic coastal views of Phillip Island near Melbourne, Australia

Full-day trips to Phillip Island start around 149 AUD and include kangaroo, koala, and penguin parades on the beach.

19. Day Trip Along the Great Ocean Road

The famed 12 Apostles near Melbourne, Australia on a beautiful, sunny day

20. Take a Spooky Tour Through Pentridge Prison

For those that enjoy ghost stories, visit Pentridge Prison. It was home to some of Australia’s most notorious criminals, including Ronald Ryan (the last person to be legally executed in Australia), Chopper Reed (an infamous gang member), and Ned Kelly (an escaped convict famous for wearing armor in a shootout with police). Tours are super interesting, lasting 1.5 hours and costing 48 AUD.

21. Take a Day trip to the Peninsula Hot Springs

About 1.5 hours outside of Melbourne, the famous Peninsula Hot Springs in Victoria is a great way to spend a relaxing spa day soaking in award-winning natural geothermal waters overlooking natural landscapes. There are 50 thermal pools that are said to have healing qualities. If you’re feeling brave, try their ‘fire and ice experience’ where you sauna first then go ‘chill’ out in Australia’s first ice cave. Entrance fees are 75 AUD. Robes, towels, flip-flops, etc. are extra to rent if you don’t have any.

Half-day tours from Melbourne including round-trip transportation and admission is $150 AUD.

With tons of museums, amazing parks and beaches, and lots of day trip opportunities, Melbourne is a city that just keeps on giving. You won’t be short on things to do here — just the opposite! It’s my favorite spot in Australia (and for good reason). Spend some time here and I promise you’ll fall in love with the food, cafes, beaches, and parks. It’s a city that doesn’t disappoint!

Melbourne Itinerary: The Complete Guide For 2-7 Days in Melbourne

Melbourne is hands down one of the greatest cities to visit in Australia, besides Sydney , of course.

With its historic architecture, flourishing arts district, vast markets and delicious coffee (yes, they do it so well here!), you’ll have lots of sights to see while visiting.

Welcome to this complete Melbourne itinerary, no matter if you are spending just 2 days in Melbourne or have a whole week to enjoy the city.

Plan a trip to Melbourne

Looking for a place to stay in Melbourne, read my extensive article on the best areas and where to stay in Melbourne.

Here are a few things that you should try to squeeze in while you’re on your Melbourne trip.

Book Your Trip To Australia

Book Your Flight The easiest way to find cheap airfares around Australia is via a flight search engine. I love using Skyscanner to find and compare the best flight deals.

Book Your Accommodation I use Booking.com as well as Agoda all the time and love them both as you can search a whole city or neighbourhood for the best places to stay and filter for your specific needs, like free wifi, a private pool or your favourite hotel chain.

Book Your Travel Insurance Choosing good travel insurance is the most important thing to do when you plan your trip. Travel insurance protects you against falling sick while travelling, an unexpected injury, theft, as well as cancellations. My favourite company to buy insurance is SafetyWing , they also cover COVID-19.

Melbourne Itinerary 3 Days

Browse the queen victoria markets.

For your Melbourne itinerary, 3 days may seem like so little to take in all the city has to offer.

However, with 3 days in Melbourne, you will definitely want to check out the Queen Victoria Markets to begin the day. This marketplace is absolutely huge and it will likely take you a full day to see it all. So, take your time and see, taste and smell everything.

With many places to shop, eat, and drink, you can also buy some souvenirs and then find a deli to snack on a fresh sandwich and coffee. This buzzing market is a great place to get brunch, so spend some extra time shopping and eat a late breakfast at any of the tasty spots there.

3 days in Melbourne

If you are a real foodie, you will want to join a foodie tour, this 2-hour tour is a great introduction to all the market has on offer before you go browse it yourself.

If you have some time after the markets, visit the nearby Flagstaff Gardens.

After a full day of shopping and eating, you will want to check out the nightlife in Fitzroy and Collingwood to party and dance off your indulgence from earlier at one of the many bars and clubs in the district.

Melbourne travel itinerary

With places like Bar Liberty that serves specialty cocktails and has an extensive wine list, or Naked For Satan – named after a man named Satan who often got naked to survive the heat from his illegal distillery – which has a rooftop terrace and a full balcony that wraps all the way around the building, you have your pick of the best options in Melbourne.

Melbourne Itinerary 4 Days

Go seaside to st kilda.

As day four in Melbourne comes around, you will have plenty of things to do on your Melbourne travel itinerary at St Kilda, a popular seaside suburb only a 20-minute tram ride from the Melbourne CBD.

This area offers you the chance to choose between multiple restaurants and bars and has a beautiful beach and pier to explore.

Grab breakfast at one of the many cafes, most of them can be found of Fitzroy Street. Try Fitzrovia or Staple Providore & Café.

If you fancy, head over to Luna Park for a few hours of rides and attractions. This historical amusement park opened in 1912 and has rides, games, and shows to see while in the park. Tickets are best bought on the spot at the park.

After you've ridden all the rides you want, head to the most famous beach in Melbourne and layout in the sun to soak up some rays, if weather permits.

Things to do in Melbourne

St Kilda Beach also has a fantastic pier that you can walk along. Take a stroll on it and you might get to see some Fairy Penguins waddling along the rocks nearby.

If you happen to be in St Kilda on a Sunday, walk over to check out the Esplanade Market , which offers local artisan’s goods, crafts, jewellery and more. On the first Sunday of every month, they even have a full vegan market for you to try out some new plant-based options.

On your Melbourne itinerary, 2 days should offer you the chance to get your adrenaline pumping. With the Eureka Skytower already done on day 2, how about testing your courage by skydiving over St Kilda Beach ? You will get to fly over the beach and get a high view of the sand, sea, and beachgoers on your way down.

Or, if you'd rather have a leisurely day of rest and relaxation, you can visit Brighton Beach instead and enter the 96 famous bathing boxes .

These were originally made for beachgoers, who were not allowed to be naked or walk the beach in a swimsuit alone so that they could bathe in the water in a private hut and watch the ocean.

Each one if colorfully painted and unique, so choose whatever is your favorite and lay in the water to relax.

The best way is to take a tour of multiple wineries by bus, or check out a few of them on your own, if you have a little more time and potentially can stay in the region overnight.

Either way, you can spend the whole day sipping from different varieties and specially crafted options made just for the tour. Plus, once you find your favorite, you can take a bottle home with you.

Book your Yarra Valley small group tour here.

Peninsula Hot Springs

Why not spend your last day in Melbourne recovering and tending to those sore muscles by heading to the Mornington Peninsula Hot Springs. These hot springs are Victoria’s first geothermal mineral waters just 90-minutes from the city.

The Peninsula Hot Springs offers over 50 different bathing options to choose from and with choices like mineral pools, saunas, and hydrotherapy, there are plenty of great places to kickback.

The most famous of all the pools is the one that sits on the hilltop and overlooks the farming land of Fingal. This pool offers a 360-degree view that you just can’t beat.

The best way to get here is again with a day tour, like this one .

The Grampians National Park

For those visitors who would rather keep the adventure going than take the day to relax at the hot springs, you should add the Grampians National Park to your itinerary.

This park is a reserve in Victoria that houses many different animals and indigenous plants that you can hike around to see. You can find flora and fauna that grows naturally in the area and hike up the sandstone mountains for the best view possible.

The trails in this national park lead to amazing locations that you can choose to hike to.

The first is the MacKenzie falls, which is a large waterfall that features a big observation area to watch the gushing water flow into the body below. Although you can’t swim in these waters, the hike is worth the trip with the view of this natural wonder.

The other option is the trail that leads to The Balconies, which is a string of metal-framed balconies that look out over the Victoria Valley.

Springtime is one of the best times to be in Melbourne, and with the views of the flowers and wildlife of this area, it is easy to see why. With gloomy mornings and warm days during this time of year, you can take this hike anytime during the day and get an eyeful.

Want a guided tour? It’s easy, because you won’t have to hire a car! Book your Grampians National Park day trip here.

Seeing all of Melbourne can hardly be done in a day or two, but if you choose to spend seven days in this great city, you will be able to see the best that it has to offer.

From the CBD to the Great Ocean Road with its stunning 12 Apostles to the Peninsula Hot Springs, you can pack your Melbourne itinerary with fun and exciting activities that will make your stay just incredible.

Which big employers have the largest and smallest gender pay gaps? New data reveals all

The difference between what men and women are paid at the biggest employers in Australia has been revealed for the first time: from brewers and builders to banks and bakers.

Data divulged under new laws show massive gender pay gaps at some of our most well-known businesses, including many where women are their key customers.

At brewer Lion, maker of XXXX, Tooheys and Four Pillars gin, the median base pay gender gap is just 1.4 per cent.

It is higher (8.4 per cent) if you include all forms of remuneration such as bonuses and penalties, but still far below the national average of 14.5 per cent and a sliver of those at some of Australia's biggest household names.

Sarah Abbott, a human resources executive at the brewery group, understands the challenge.

"There are a number of colleagues in other organisations who are very nervous for these announcements. And my advice would be start now: The sooner you start, the sooner you're going to be able to create change," she says.

That might be too late.

More than 5 million workers get to judge if what their employer says about gender equality — and does — match up.

The median gender pay gap at airline Jetstar is 53.5 per cent, meaning that for every $1 a male worker makes at the company, women earn, on average, 46.5 cents.

It's scarcely better at Virgin (41.7 per cent), Qantas (39.3 per cent), the Commonwealth Bank (29.8 per cent), Westpac (27 per cent), insurer IAG (27.5 per cent) or Suncorp (20.5 per cent).

The figures in this article are based on "base pay". If you use a "total remuneration" figure that takes in penalties and bonuses, some gaps change. Jetstar's gap decreases to 43.7 per cent. Commonwealth Bank's increases to 29.9 per cent.

Companies have been submitting their data to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) for almost a decade, which created anonymised industry-by-industry reports and told companies where they sat in their sector.

Despite opposition from some business groups, the Labor government changed the law and led to this moment of radical transparency: the publication of the gender pay gaps at every company in Australia with more than 100 employees.

See below for the gaps at companies including supermarkets, football clubs, schools, healthcare providers, law firms and more — or your employer.

Power giant AGL acknowledges it has work to do. It's one of many companies with a base salary pay gap (30.3 per cent) more than double the national average.

Sarah Gilbert 1

With a decade in the job — and distinctive rainbow-flecked hair — everyone at the Loy Yang power station in Victoria's Latrobe Valley seems to know Sarah Gilbert.

"I found that AGL in particular, there's always been a respect for people as they are rather than necessarily your gender or your cultural background," she says.

"It's always been about respect for the person."

The head of risk and assurance, she helps the company to comply with laws that govern the coal mine and power station.

Historically it has been a male-dominated field, but she's never felt uncomfortable.

"And I've never had to queue for the toilet," she says, laughing.

Sarah Gilbert 2

As the company tries to close the gender pay gap, it includes people like Ms Gilbert in leadership programs, attracting more female apprentices to the well-paid field, and having a commitment from the CEO down to changing the company.

"In the engineering space, we're seeing more females coming through. Certainly, in terms of our operators, we're seeing more females, literally at the coalface," she says.

"There's a really clear indication that, yeah, they're serious about it."

Complex gap

The gender pay gap — the difference between what men and women are paid in the same organisation — is a  persistent problem .

WGEA, which collates the information, describes it like this:

"Gender pay gaps … show the difference between the average or median pay of women and men across organisations, industries and the workforce as a whole."

As Qantas notes in a statement, the figures show what's happening across the whole organisation:

From Qantas Group chief people officer Catherine Walsh: "This does not mean women are paid less than men to do the same jobs at Qantas and Jetstar, but shows there is a significant under-representation of women in highly paid roles like pilots and engineers across airlines globally."

It is not about "equal pay for equal work".

Not equal pay

The fact that men and women should be paid the same for the same work has been enshrined in law for decades.

Any employer not doing that is breaking the law.

Woman holding hand of bronze statue of woman with sign saying 'no more male and female rates, one rate only'

The gender pay gap is more complex and comes about through factors such as gender-dominated or previously segregated industries.

For example, teaching and "caring" professions have typically been dominated by women and paid much less than male-dominated fields such as construction.

Women are also more likely to have time out of the workforce to raise children or care for elderly relatives. Additionally, there is a history of gender discrimination against women and historic barriers to better wages and financial security, such as making up a higher proportion of part-time roles.

It's for these reasons that companies that are reducing their gaps have tended to do similar things: increasing the proportion of women in management roles, turning maternity leave provisions to "paternity leave" (and encouraging men to use it), and auditing where the lowest-paid roles in a company are.

'Significant step'

In a statement ahead of the release, WGEA chief executive Mary Wooldridge said workers being able to see inside their own companies was a "significant step forward" for accountability.

Mary Wooldridge sits at a desk with a computer in the background.

The figures will now be released annually, meaning the public will be able to see any improvement.

"We'll be able to see if the commitments they make and articulate in relation to their understanding of the gaps and what they're going to do about them translates into the outcome of reducing their gender pay gap," she says.

The public pressure from workers inside companies — and media coverage of the data — is part of the plan.

And it's worked elsewhere.

Worked in the UK

The UK government first published the information in 2017, prompting an explosive response as high-profile companies were forced to defend and fix large gaps between what they paid their male and female staff.

Airline RyanAir (a 72 per cent gap) and bank Barclays (44 per cent) were among the biggest. The data made a substantial impact  in reducing the gap in future years.

UK gender pay gap data

Since publishing the broad data (2010) and the specific company-by-company information (2017), the gender pay gap has fallen by almost a quarter for all employees.

The reason?

Companies must submit their internal data to WGEA, with the submission signed off by a chief executive or person at a similar level.

At the same time, companies are invited to provide an "employer statement" to give context to their results.

For example, one of the reasons the airlines have large gaps is that the intake of pilots remains overwhelmingly male. Their well-paid jobs contrast with customer-facing staff at airlines who tend to be female and lower-paid.

As Virgin Australia notes in its statement:

"The 2023 median gender pay gap … of 41.7 per cent is driven by the demographic profile of our organisation. We have a larger proportion of men occupying higher paying roles, such as pilots and aircraft engineering roles … we are focused on improving the demographic profile of key roles across our organisation over time."

Insurer IAG makes similar points about its 8,400 staff.

"While IAG has a greater representation of women than men across our workforce, there are fewer women than men at senior career levels where role pay is typically higher, and fewer women than men in higher-paying roles," its statement reads.

"While recognising we have further work to do to achieve gender pay equity … we welcome the increased focus and transparency through WGEA publishing these important metrics and look forward to reporting on our progress in future years."

It is not compulsory for companies to provide the contextual information. Much of it has  just been released and will be added to this article when it is made available. Companies mentioned in this article have been contacted for comment before publication.

The gap remains broad, even at companies that champion women.

Women undercut

Some of the most popular brands in Australia that sell goods largely to women have substantial gender pay gaps.

For every $1 a man makes working at the following companies, this is what a woman makes, on average:

  • At retailer City Chic Collective, owner of City Chic and Avenue:  42.3 cents (gap is 57.7 per cent)
  • At retailer Fast Future Brands, owner of TEMT and Valleygirl:  47.9 cents (gap is 52.1 per cent)
  • At clothes chain Forever New:  49.9 cents (gap of 50.1 per cent)
  • At jeweller Pandora:  52.8 cents (gap is 47.2 per cent)
  • At swimwear retailer Seafolly:  55.5 cents (gap is 44.5 per cent)
  • At active-wear retailer Lorna Jane:  63.7 cents (gap is 36.3 per cent)
  • At clothing retailer Sussan:  73.1 cents (gap is 26.9 per cent)
  • At accessory giant Lovisa:  73.6 cents (gap is 26.4 per cent)
  • At chain store Decjuba:  79.1 cents (gap is 20.9 per cent)

All of these companies were contacted for comment.

Forever New pointed out the implications of having a 1,436-strong workforce where the vast majority were women working in retail stores, many in entry-level positions. There are just 65 male employees in the organisation, but 62 of them work in the head office which has larger salaries.

In a statement, it defended its result.

"As a brand, Forever New has policies in place to ensure equal remuneration between women and men and offers flexible work arrangements for females to continue to progress in their careers."

Further, it says 84 per cent of the best-paid quarter of its workforce are female "and women occupy 89 per cent of manager level roles".

The front of a women's clothing store with the words Forever New lit up. Mannequins and clothing racks line the store.

Decjuba has a similar-sized workforce and an even starker gender split: it's 99 per cent female.

"The pay gap at Decjuba is skewed due to the small number of male team members, many of whom are in head office roles," the company said in a statement that listed policies on parental leave, flexible work and visa sponsorship.

"We are proud to have a balanced gender representation in our executive leadership team."

City Chic says three-quarters of general manager and operational manager roles are held by women, but it doesn't employ many men in its stores because of the nature of the product.

"City Chic is committed to gender equality in remuneration and, where appropriate, gender diversity in its employment practices. Given the nature of City Chic's business (plus size women's fashion), a limited number of roles are appropriately open to gender diversity, with the majority of its personnel being in customer-facing sales roles."

Shortly before publication, lawyers for Lorna Jane sent a letter threatening legal action if the reporting of its average total remuneration gender pay gap (37.1 per cent, higher than its base salary gap) did not place the figure "in proper context".

The letter from HopwoodGanim lawyers notes that at the time the data was taken, Lorna Jane employed 1,382 women and 47 men, with women making up 97 per cent of the workforce and the entire staff of its 101 stores.

"As part of Lorna Jane’s commitment to providing flexible employment conditions for its valued team, a very large number of its female staff enjoy being able to work in casual and part-time capacities. In contrast, the vast majority of Lorna Jane’s male employees work in full-time, non-retail roles."

As the gender pay gap reflects the difference in average earnings between women and men in the workforce, the tiny proportion of men working in Lorna Jane — all in roles outside of retail service — would grow the overall gap.

Brands including 2XU, Jenny Craig, Tupperware Australia and The Body Shop were published on a list of "non-compliant" employers which did not submit a report on time.

Consumers will choose

Silvia Salazar, a senior research fellow at the Bankwest-Curtin Economics Centre at Curtin University, cites the examples of FairTrade coffee and Rainforest Alliance certification for products as she thinks about the potential impact on some of the brands listed.

"If you are somebody that cares about gender equality, you are probably going to shop elsewhere if you see that the company that you really like is offering really low pay for women, has no women in management and so forth," she says.

Dr Silvia Salazar

It comes down to values: what a company talks about and what it does.

"You expect that a company that mostly caters for women will care also to have these women enjoy equality within their companies."

Dr Salazar describes it as akin to the issue of " greenwashing " — where companies market products or services as environmentally sustainable when they're not.

"You can have the same thing with this gender equality. I guess this publicly available data will show whether companies are actually doing what they said. Or not," she says.

Brewing change

A 2016 audit at brewer Lion exposed big gaps in how men and women were paid — and prompted action.

"We gave people changes to their base pay to say: 'What you're currently on isn't right. And we want you to be paid fairly for your role and your level'," says Ms Abbott, who runs the diversity, equity and inclusion function at Lion.

Sarah Abbott 1

"That was done on the roles, positions that we recognised needed to be fixed.

"We needed to right the wrongs, draw a line in the sand and say: 'This is not okay on our watch'."

But the changes went further. The company banned discussion of previous salaries during job interviews and paid people according to the position they held.

"We don't want to bring on a poor behaviour that's replicated over (other) organisations into our own. So we pay for the level and the role, not for what the person was paid for before," she says.

Beer kegs on shelving at XXXX brewery in Brisbane.

With a gender pay gap now at 1.4 per cent, Lion is an example of both the work required inside companies that want to tackle the issue — and the change possible.

"We really welcome the opportunity for organisations to share their gender pay gap," Ms Abbott says.

"It's just basic equity. It's black and white. To me, I don't think there's any question around why and why not we should be doing it."

Froth and bubble

"What's not to love about brewing?" laughs Celsa Wilton, the brewing manager for Castlemaine Perkins, the iconic home of XXXX near the banks of the Brisbane River.

Celsa Wilton 2

With a background in science, Ms Wilton was drawn in by the technical challenge of the process and now helps brew millions of litres of beer every year.

When she started 30 years ago she was the "first and only female at the table" but now has a team with a 50:50 gender split. Acknowledging that it hadn't been easy, Ms Wilton says it's now a point of pride that incoming staff don't experience a work environment dominated by one gender.

Celsa Wilton 1

"There are so many advantages to trying to close that gender gap. Not because we've got a box to tick or a quota to meet, but you want that diversity in thinking in the brewery," she says.

"We can offer a different way of problem-solving, a different way of coming up with solutions," she says.

"There are so many benefits to having that diversity within any team."

A long list

Figures reveal the gender pay gap at some of Australia's biggest brands. Here are a few of the base pay gender gap provided to the government agency WGEA and published on Tuesday:

  • Rival Coles:  6 per cent

  • Commonwealth Bank:  29.8 per cent
  • Westpac: 27 per cent
  • ANZ: 22.7 per cent
  • NAB: 16.4 per cent

In a statement, the nation's biggest lender says the Commonwealth Bank has "a long history of promoting gender equality and working to improve the position of women in our workplace, and society more broadly" and has set clear public goals around its commitment.

"On an aggregate level, CBA has achieved gender pay equity on a 'like for like basis' – that is, men and women are paid equally for performing the same or comparable work. CBA's median pay gap calculated by WGEA reflects many factors influencing the gender pay gap more broadly, including the types of roles performed by women, the seniority of those roles and the composition of the workforce."

Women make up more than half (54 per cent) of the bank's workforce but 71 per cent of the lower-paid customer service roles in branches and call centres.

Westpac also pointed to its leadership in gender equality and its desire to pay people fairly.

"Our gender pay gap is heavily influenced by the shape of our organisation, with many women being employed in roles in contact centres, operations and our large retail branch network," a spokesperson said in a statement.

"Our focus is on improving the gender pay gap by increasing participation of women in senior roles as well as specialist areas such as institutional banking and technology."
