Description

Rising from the rugged hills of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, the magnificent Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue stands watch over the island.  The towering statue is Bali’s most iconic landmark and depicts the Hindu God Wisnu, atop his mount, the mythical eagle, Garuda. The Garuda is the national emblem of Indonesia, an enduring symbol of freedom from oppression. Soaring to a height of over 120 meters, this is one of the tallest monumental statues in the world, higher than both the Statue of Liberty and Christ the Redeemer.

The statue makes a stunning central feature of GWK, a fascinating 60-hectare cultural park that draws visitors from around the globe and provides a tantalizing glimpse into Bali’s fascinating heritage through intriguing cultural performances, legendary folklore tales, immense sculptures, and dramatic cinematic presentation. Enjoy panoramic island views as you explore the park on foot or by Segway. Indulge in Indonesian heritage cuisine, immerse yourself in a land steeped in mythology, or plan your next big event in one of GWK’s epic venues.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue depicts Wisnu riding Garuda. In Hindu mythology, Lord Wisnu is seen as the protector of the Universe, while his trusted companion, the mighty eagle-like Garuda represents loyalty and selfless devotion. Kencana means gold, and both are adorned in crowns of gold mosaic. The Garuda is also the national emblem of Indonesia and represents freedom.

Designed by renowned Balinese artist Nyoman Nuarta, the statue is made of copper and brass and features 754 modules with 25 steel segments weighing in at a hefty 900 tons, with a steel weight of 1300 tons. The statue and pedestal is 120.9 meters high with a width of 64 meters thanks to Garuda’s wingspan.

Top 15 Photos from our Kencana Adventure Tour

One thing we learned during our time spent in Eastern Indonesia is that it is extremely photogenic. Around every turn, you will find another excuse to lift the camera to your eye and I certainly didn’t hesitate during our time spent here. The only regret we have is that we didn’t spend more time in this area.

Our Kencana Adventure cruise started in the picturesque Flores and moved westward to Komodo Island, Rinca Island, Gili Laba, Satonda, Gili Moyo, ending in Lombok. We saw some pretty remote places that made our eyes pop. I

‘ve culled out my 15 favorite photos from our trip through these islands, but know that the shutter button was pushed 100 times over this.

This trip was the first time we have seen spectacular sunsets since we left home. Yes, they beat all the sunsets in New Zealand and Australia , so excuse the fact that I included so many.

I am hoping that you will find them just as spectacular as we did while you enjoy this tour through this beautiful part of the World.

Recently I’ve seen a couple of posts on Indonesia and I’ve loved everything I’ve seen so far, and these pictures just go to make my desire to go grow even more. Such a shame that we didn’t make it there when we were in Asia in ’12/13.

Yes, Indonesia is an AMAZING country! There is so much more to it than Bali. We can’t wait for a return visit. We plan to visit Sulawesi and Papua on our next visit and hopefully get some diving done near Flores. Simply a beautiful place in this World. 🙂

More mature travellers and those with pre-existing conditions will likely be charged more than younger travellers and those without conditions, as insurers deem them as high-risk travellers that will likely need to claim while away.

We used the profile of a family of four, aged 42, 40, 14 and 12, spending 13 to 26 May in Indonesia, and assumed they have no pre-existing conditions, (although these providers do offer cover for pre-existing conditions should you need it).

We found basic cover ranged from around $106 to $241, while comprehensive cover started at around $226, with the most expensive policy costing just under $324.

Running quotes on travel insurer websites will allow you to make side-by-side comparisons of their policies based on the types of cover they offer, the various cover levels and prices. Looking through the offerings of a number of insurers can help with finding a deal on the cover you need.

When running a quote you will need to enter details about yourself, anyone else travelling with you and your trip. This includes your name, the age of all travellers, your holiday destination and duration. If pre-existing cover is available, you will also be taken through a medical screening, so the insurer can build a medical profile on each traveller.

Is travel insurance mandatory for Indonesia?

Travel insurance is not a legal requirement for travelling to Indonesia. However, it is recommended by Smartraveller, which advises taking out a comprehensive policy that covers all emergency medical costs, including emergency treatment and medical evacuation. Without it, you could be faced with bills for thousands of dollars, which the Australian government will not pay.

What is required to enter Indonesia from Australia?

Australians visiting or transiting through Indonesia should apply for an e-Visa on arrival , at least 48 hours before travelling. You can alternatively get a Visa on Arrival at some international airports, seaports or land crossings.

To apply for an e-Visa on arrival or the Visa on arrival, you need to have an ordinary (non-emergency) passport that will remain valid at least six months after your arrival in Indonesia. Smarttraveller also advises ensuring your passport has a minimum six months validity from your departure from Indonesia, to avoid any issues with leaving the country or with an onward or return flight. You’ll also need to complete an e-customs declaration within three days of departure to Indonesia.

The Bali Provincial Government has introduced a tourist levy of IDR 150,000 ($14.56 AUD) per person for foreign tourists visiting Bali. The levy is separate from the e-Visa on Arrival or the Visa on Arrival. You can pay the levy online before you travel or on arrival at a designated payment counter at Bali’s airport and seaport. What is ‘excess’ in travel insurance?

Garuda Indonesia Targets Quick Wins With More Airbus A330s And Boeing 737s

While the COVID-19 pandemic left no airline untouched, it is fair to say that some found the going tougher than others, particularly in Southeast Asia, where severe and extended lockdowns left airlines with gaping holes in their balance sheets. The pandemic effects were also the straw that almost the camel's back for airlines already in difficult financial situations, such as Thai Airways and Garuda Indonesia, although both have now emerged looking a lot healthier.

Revenue and passenger numbers soar

Last week, national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia released its 2023 results, which showed a 40% Year-on-Year (YoY) increase in operating revenue to $2.9 billion and a net profit of $252 million. This is a significant drop from the $3.7 billion net profit in 2022, primarily driven by gains from restructuring the group.

The group carried 19.98 million passengers in 2023, a 34% increase YoY, with Garuda Indonesia transporting 8.29 million and low-cost carrier Citilink 11.68 million, at passenger load factors of 72.44% and 78.7%, respectively. The group recorded a 2023 load factor of 74.88%, with Garuda Indonesia (Garuda) recording an impressive on-time performance of 87.3%.

Operating costs rose by 4% to $2.6 billion, with the increased flying activity pushing fuel expenses up by 27% YoY to $957 million, accounting for close to 30% of the group's total expenses. That could have been worse, as Gauruda said fuel cost optimization helped save the group around $16.1 million in December. Garuda Indonesia's President Director, Irfan Setiaputra said:

"The strategic corporate actions implemented to accelerate post-restructuring performance recovery, coupled with the growing passenger movements, are expected to further strengthen the business entity's foundation for optimizing business revenue and ensuring sustainable profitability."

To meet continued high demand, the group plans to add nine aircraft in 2024, including one deferred from last year and excludes additional aircraft leased for the annual Hajj season . The aircraft that will arrive progressively throughout the year include four single-aisle Boeing 737-800s, two widebody 777-300ERs, and two Airbus A330-200s. Some of that capacity will allow Garuda to launch flights to Doha (Qatar), and the airline said it complies with lessor requirements for new aircraft leases.

Published fleet numbers are not always 100% accurate, and with Garuda Indonesia, that's exacerbated by the aircraft moving in and out of active service. The best estimate is from the airline, which said that at the end of September 2023, it had 69 aircraft, with 58 of those in operation, including 37 Boeing 737s, eight 777s, and 13 Airbus A330s, including two A330neos . The same report showed Citilink was operating 45 aircraft, including 34 Airbus A320s, five A320neos, one A330neo and five ATR 72-600s.

Debt load is easing with the new strategy

Since late 2021, the airline group has been restructuring its debt, and that effort paid off in 2022 when it received approval from its creditors to reduce debt by up to 50%, from $10.9 billion to $4.79 billion, which has significantly helped the airline with its recovery.

The debt load further decreased last year, with short-term liabilities falling by 30% from $1.68 billion to $1.16 billion. Garuda has several debt repayment schemes, including converting debt to equity, paying it down from operational cash flow, issuing new debt securities and sukuk (Islamic bonds).

Garuda is implementing its 'Rebound Forward' operating strategy, which aims to secure three Quick Wins under Full Service, Simple, and Profitable headings.

Recognizing the power and strength of the Garuda Indonesia brand, the airline's strategy is to be recognized as the most trusted brand that delivers genuine and enhanced service and offers a digitally enabled package to its customers. The Simple aspect means it will focus on domestic routes and selective international services and look for effective synergies with Citilink , including flight planning, fleet type optimization and integrated talent management.

In 2024, the group is prioritizing profitability, focusing on cost efficiency and restructuring among its subsidiaries.
