CMV Magellan Review

Review of cmv magellan.

CMV Magellan cruise ship is a Holiday-class vessel initially operated by Carnival Cruise Line as "MS Holiday". It joined CMV's fleet in Spring 2015. As former Carnival "Fun Ship", Magellan still retains the distinctive funnel shape. Carnival Holiday's sisterships (Holiday-class cruise ships) are MS Jubilee (Henna) and Carnival Celebration (now Grand Celebration) .

For CMV, the vessel (IMO 8217881) was Madeira- flagged  (MMSI number 255803790) and registered in Funchal . The last CMV drydock refurbishment was in 2020 January.

History - construction and ownership

The 1452-passenger ship MS Magellan belongs to the Holiday-class of Carnival cruise ships and was last operated by CMV UK (Cruise and Maritime Voyages, part of Global Maritime Group). The vessel was previously operated by Iberocruceros (another Carnival Corporation  subsidiary company) as "MS Grand Holiday".

CMV Magellan cruise ship (Carnival Holiday)

On July 20, 2020, CMV's parent company SQTL (South Quay Travel & Leisure Ltd) was placed into administration / filed for bankruptcy . The UK-based company traded as "Cruise and Maritime Voyages" (trademarked brand). In June, SQTL-CMV entered into emergency talks with potential investors and lenders. Unfortunately, the company's efforts to secure funding and stay afloat during the Coronavirus crisis failed.

All CMV cruise ships were placed on the secondhand market and open for sale. In October was planned the vessels to be auctioned via the London UK-based company CW Kellock & Co Ltd (Ship Auctioneers, Brokers and Valuers). Biddings (deadline in brackets) opened for Vasco Da Gama (Oct 8), Columbus (Oct 12), Astor (Oct 15), Magellan (Oct 19) and Marco Polo (Oct 22).

  • (October 8) The 27-year-old CMV Vasco Da Gama was sold to Mystic Invest (Portugal) for USD 10,187 million.
  • (October 12) The 31-year-old CMV Columbus was sold to Seajets Ferries Greece for USD 5,321 million.
  • (October 15) The 33-year-old CMV Astor was sold to an undisclosed buyer (sales price USD 1,71 million) who intends to resell it for scrap metal.
  • (October 19) The 35-year-old CMV Magellan was sold to Seajets Ferries Greece for USD 3,431 million.
  • (October 22) The 55-year-old CMV Marco Polo was sold to an undisclosed buyer/private investors (sales price USD 2,77 million) who first offered the vessel for charter (cruiser or hotel ship) but in December sold it for scrap metal to Alang Shipbreaking India .

On December 9, CMV Magellan arrived in Malta (anchored off Valletta ) waiting for orders. After transitting Suez Canal , in December 2020 the ship remained at anchorage off Oman's coast (southwest of Masirah Island ). On December 28, the boat docked at Port Duqm (Oman). On January 18, 2021 (under the name "Mages"/MMSI 620800000) the vessel left its anchorage heading to India, where was beached at Alang and scrapped.

SEAJETS Greece (Eaglepower Shipping Ltd/shipowner, 1989-founded) is a Cyprus-based shipping company that specializes in passenger and cargo ferry services exclusively in the Eastern Mediterranean (Aegean Sea). Seajets' fleet includes mainly fast-ferries (14x high-speed catamarans, max capacity 2100 passengers + 600 cars) plus 3x conventional Ro-Pax vessels (max capacity 1300 passengers + 400 cars). Seajets operates from homeports Piraeus-Athens , Lavrion and Crete ( Heraklion and Rethymno ) inter-connecting 26 Cyclades Islands (Crete including) with 260 connections.

CMV Magellan Wiki

MS Magellan is a Holiday-class cruise liner operated as "MS Holiday" by Carnival Cruise Line and as "MS Grand Holiday" by Ibero Cruises. As a former Carnival ship, Magellan has the distinctive "Fun Ship" funnel shape.

In 2003, Carnival's Grand Holiday cruise ship entered drydock for an extensive refit and refurbishment. In 2005, during Hurricane Katrina, the cruise shipping service was temporarily interrupted in order for the vessel to serve as a shelter for those suffering from the storm. After the disaster, MS Grand Holiday left Mississippi River for drydock renovations. Engineers and designers worked for several weeks to change the propellers and add new carpeting and plumbing. Then Grand Holiday was transferred to Iberocruceros' fleet.

A curious fact is that as "MS Grand Holiday", the vessel was chartered as a hotel ship in Port Sochi Russia during Winter Olympics 2014 (February 5-24, 2014). As "CMV Magellan", the vessel was again chartered as a hotel ship in Newport Wales (South Dock) during 2017 UEFA Champions League Final in Cardiff (June 2017).

The 1985-built vessel was last refitted by Carnival in 2010. CMV confirmed the purchase in November 2014. On November 3, 2014, CMV announced "MS Grand Holiday" joins its fleet in March 2015 under the name "MS Magellan". For CMV, the ship offered voyages departing from UK ports (in Scotland and England) - Newcastle , Dundee , Tilbury-London .

CMV Magellan cruise ship (Carnival Holiday)

Vessel's christening ceremony for CMV was on March 12, 2015, in Tilbury (London Cruise Terminal). Ship's new godmother was Mrs. Gloria Hunniford - a presenter for Northern Ireland's ITV and BBC programs, with her own "BBC Radio 2" daily show. This CMV ship is named after Ferdinand Magellan (Fernao de Magalhaes, 1480 - 1521) who was a Portuguese explorer who organized the Spanish sea expedition (between 1519 - 1522, westward route) to the East Indies.

On March 15, 2015, was the Inaugural Cruise (maiden voyage for CMV) to Iceland and Faroe Islands. Fun fact is that this CMV ship has a namesake - the 2010-launched "CMA CGM Magellan". The vessel is among the world's largest container ships (capacity 13,830 containers) and operated by CMA-CGM Line.

In June 2017, the cruise ship was chartered to serve as "floating hotel" for Champions League Final's visitors in Newport Wales . CMV Magellan entered Newport on June 2. The docking area (South Dock's quayside) was transformed into events and activity space managed by Hopscotch Groupe (a French company) on behalf of Nissan. The quayside events operation was co-organized also by CMV and ABP South Wales. The sporting event (2017 UEFA Champions League Final) was held at National Stadium of Wales ( Cardiff ).

In 2019, the ship started Mexican Riviera cruises under a new CMV brand name - "Cruceros Maritimos Vacacionales". The 7-day itinerary program (February through March 2019) offered roundtrips from both Acapulco and Manzanillo , with ports of call Mazatlan , Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas (Baja California) , plus 2 sea days. Maiden season's total passenger capacity was estimated at 12,000.

CMV Magellan refurbishment 2017 review

The ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment (January-February) was done at Damen Shiprepair Vlissingen (DSV) in Vlissingen Holland . The list of works included routine equipment maintenance, propulsion system (starboard propeller blades polishing, bow, and stern thruster blades repairs), renewal and upgrades in public areas and cabins, repairs of steel damages, overhauling of several systems (main engine blower, tender embarkation cylinders, heaters, evaporator, purifier). Stabilizer fins were also serviced.

A new sewage system was installed (sewage tanks and treatment units replaced). Rudders and the hull underwent inspection and thorough cleaning. Scupper pipes were renewed. The ship's 16 lifeboats were removed and fully-serviced. All air conditioning units were overhauled. The wastewater vacuum system (serving 700 onboard WC-toilets) was chemically cleaned. The ship's incinerator was refurbished.

Magellan ship's 1-month drydock in 2019-2020 (December January) was at Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam . The scheduled drydocking project included general maintenance works (bow and stern thrusters, liferafts), repairs (main-auxiliary engines, steel tanks), cleaning, and class inspections. Following the drydock, the liner now has a new livery (on the superstructure) and also repainted hull - in blue (trademarked by CMV color) with two white lines in the upper section.

CMV Magellan cruise itineraries 2020-2021 (CANCELLED)

After acquiring the former CMV cruise ship Magellan at auction for $3.4 million, new owner Seajets have sent the former Carnival Cruise Line ship for scrap in India.

The 1985-built, 1,452-guest ship now appears to be heading to India, where she will be beached and scrapped, joining former fleet mate Marco Polo.

The ship sailed for Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV), and was auctioned off following the demise of the company.

Launched in 1985, the Magellan was built for Carnival Cruise Line as Holiday.

Following a major refit in 2009, the ship was transferred to IberoCruceros to begin operating in the Spanish market as the Grand Holiday.

With the demise of the Ibero brand in 2014 the ship was sold to CMV and entered service with CMV in 2015.

Antarctica Cruises

Magellan Explorer

the magellan cruise ship

  • Capacity limited to 73 guests ensuring ample space on board for ultimate comfort and off-board passenger expedition experience.
  • Time-saving, comfortable and intimate, this air-cruise rethinks polar exploration if you have a limited amount of travel time.

Named after the famed explorer, Ferdinand Magellan, the 298-ft Magellan Explorer was built in 2019 as the world’s first ice-class expedition cruise ship custom-designed for Antarctic air-cruise operations.

What makes your cruise different from all the rest is that instead of boarding right away and spending long days crossing the Drake Passage to reach Antarctica, you’ll save time by taking a two-hour plane ride from Punta Arenas straight to the White Continent itself. And what’s more, with capacity limited to just 73 guests and with 60 crew members, the Magellan Explorer has one of the best crew-to-guest ratios in Antarctica and subsequently excellent customer service levels.

Was the Magellan Sold for Scrap?

  • January 15, 2021

the magellan cruise ship

After picking up the Magellan at auction for just $3.4 million, new owner Seajets appears to have flipped the former Carnival Cruise Line ship for scrap in India, according to sources.

The 1985-built, 1,452-guest ship now appears heading to India, where it will be beached and turned into scrap metal and joining the Marco Polo, which was also bought at the same auction and has suffered the same fate.

One source told Cruise Industry News that alternative uses for old cruise ships, such as using them for accomodations, are not working out.

“The costs are killing them” the source said.

The ship most recently sailed for Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV), and was auctioned off following the demise of the company.

Launched in 1985, the Magellan was built for Carnival Cruise Line as the Holiday. Following a major refit in 2009, the ship was transferred to IberoCruceros to begin operating in the Spanish market as the Grand Holiday. With the demise of the Ibero brand in 2014 the ship was sold to CMV.

Our small ship cruise experts have been aboard nearly every first-class vessel in Antarctica. Choose the strong and agile Magellan Explorer for a stylish base for adventures, combining excellence in expedition and boutique hospitality. The Magellan Explorer’s dedication to keeping it small fits perfectly with AdventureSmith Explorations’ philosophy of small, sustainable cruises. As other Antarctica operators continue to push the boundaries of what constitutes a small ship (many reaching above 150 guests), it is refreshing to see a polar vessel focused on preserving the guests’ experience as well as the environment. Limiting capacity to only 76 guests allows for ample space on board for ultimate comfort and off-board passenger expedition experience. This limited passenger count also allows for all travelers arriving to embark on a single flight to Antarctica , translating into less waiting. For these, and many other reasons, the Magellan Explorer is among our top choices for passengers seeking Antarctica luxury cruises and longer Falkland Islands and South Georgia cruise routes.

Operations Aboard Magellan Explorer

Because the Magellan Explorer has been planned and built specifically for the operation of Antarctic air cruises, many of her technical features are designed to support long periods of time away from port. Extended fuel range, comfortable crew quarters, spacious storage areas for provisions and supplies, and a well-equipped workshop for equipment maintenance are just some of the features that make the Magellan Explorer the perfect platform for a fly-and-cruise operation.

The vessel is built to the latest Polar Code specifications and carries a Polar Class 6 ice-class (Lloyd’s Register PC6), with its ice-detecting radar, state-of-the-art navigation and double hull construction. She features stabilizers for comfortable navigation and bow and stern thrusters for excellent maneuverability.

Sustainability Aboard Magellan Explorer

Specific measures have been taken to minimize MV Magellan Explorer’s carbon footprint. The ship is equipped with state-of-the-art efficient engines and meets MARPOL’s stringent Tier III emission standards, the most rigorous standard in the industry. To minimize fuel consumption, a waste heat recovery system recycles the heat produced by the ship’s engines and repurposes it to power the ship’s heating system and to warm the water used on board. All waste is compacted and stored to be safely disposed. The ship’s desalination plant produces at least 24 tons of fresh water each day.

Common Areas Aboard Magellan Explorer

The interior spaces of the MV Magellan Explorer, designed to enhance travelers’ experiences and connection to Antarctica, were designed by renowned Chilean studio Enrique Concha & Co. The modern environment provides a comfortable, stylish and efficient feel at every turn in the ship. The public spaces include a large forward-facing observation lounge that hosts briefings and educational presentations, accessible bow, and an outdoor observation deck, each providing expansive views and close contact with the natural environment. The dining room accommodates all guests and expedition staff in a single sitting. Also on board is a meeting room with an interactive science lab, gift shop, protected outdoor barbecue area, library stocked with Antarctica literature and books in multiple languages, gym with panoramic windows and sauna. The ship offers local intranet with international news, daily programs and a medical clinic. Wireless internet is at an additional cost and available throughout the ship.

Dining Aboard Magellan Explorer

The main dining room serves buffet breakfasts and lunches, and table service dinner. When weather permits, outdoor BBQs are enjoyed on the deck. Premium Chilean wines are served with lunch and dinner. Snacks and drinks are shared during welcome and farewell celebrations. Express lunches and 24-hour coffee, tea and water are also available. In addition to the cuisine, the bar offers a selection of Chilean domestic drinks, along with international favorites.

Activities Aboard Magellan Explorer

Zodiac cruises start in the specific Zodiac embarkation area equipped with hangers, lockers and sitting facilities to prepare for exploration. Then guests are routed to the two mid-ship gangways for quick and safe Zodiac operations with 10 Zodiacs for exploration and shore excursions. The Magellan Explorer also offers a variety of polar activities, including kayaking, hiking and snowshoeing, at additional cost.

Magellan Explorer Ship Reviews from Our Travelers

We most enjoyed flying over the Drake Passage - left more time to enjoy Antarctica. We chose a small vessel with only 68 passengers. It was an amazing experience, and I really liked being on a smaller vessel.

The Magellan Explorer was a magnificent Expedition ship and the triple cabin outstanding. First rate luxury that still invited casualness. No detail was too small to discuss with our AdventureSmith specialist in finding the perfect ship, travel date and accommodations.

We most enjoyed flying over the Drake Passage - left more time to enjoy Antarctica. Loved the colours of the ice, the penguins (not the smell!!), seals, whales and birds. We chose a small vessel with only 68 passengers. We chose the kayaking option, which was brilliant. It was an amazing experience, and I really liked being on a smaller vessel.

Although weather delays and COVID concerns proved challenging to the full enjoyment of the trip as planned, we certainly appreciated all the efforts made by Antarctica21 to make the most of what we were dealt with. If just based on the one day or so we had the opportunity to experience Antarctica...and projecting the remaining days had the trip not been interrupted in the beginning and at the end...then I can say it was indeed a trip of a lifetime. The Magellan Explorer was a magnificent Expedition ship and the triple cabin outstanding. First rate luxury that still invited casualness.

The Magellan Explorer was a magnificent Expedition ship and the triple cabin outstanding. First rate luxury that still invited casualness.

Great variety and welcomed the buffet style breakfast and lunch.  Complimentary wine at lunch and dinner a plus.

All leaders had great personalities, knowledgeable and sincere care that we get the most out of our experience.

Itinerary Review

When visiting Antarctica, the experience is greater than the sum of the places individually visited. The sheer excitement of stepping foot on the continent is a highlight along with walking beside penguins in their natural habitat. If I were to isolate one highlight activity it would be the kayaking amongst the glaciers, icebergs, whales and seals.

Our adventure specialist, Arielle Lightcap, was exceptional in every way. She kept in constant touch to make sure we had all the required preparation paperwork, quickly answered all of our questions and addressed any concerns in a reassuring way.  She reached out to us once we arrived at our destination to make sure all went well and if we were in need of anything.  And of course, checked in with us once we arrived back home.

As holds true for many, visiting Antarctica was a definite bucket list travel destination. I researched many agencies before reaching out to AdventureSmith. Arielle Lightcap responded to my email inquiry with a thorough knowledge of the trip and invested in the time and patience to review all the various options available for a trip of this magnitude for my family. No detail was too small to discuss and finding the perfect ship, travel date and accommodations took a great deal of time to research, explain and finalize, for which I am most appreciative. The variety and quality of travel adventures offered by AdventureSmith is exceptional.

8 Things to Know for Your Antarctica Cruise Packing List

When packing for travel to the most remote place on earth, there are several considerations to keep in mind.

Magellan Explorer | Antarctica Expedition Ship

Magellan Explorer

Magellan Explorer is the first expedition ship meticulously designed for Antarctic aircruise operation. It represents a convergence between top-tier expeditions and boutique hotel hospitality.

The Magellan Explorer was designed by a team of designers, engineers and naval architects who worked together to create a robust, yet agile vehicle. Magellan has incorporated intelligent, sustainable and tailored solutions to enhance the guest experience. This will position Magellan at the center of air-cruise endeavors.

Interior Design

Interiors designed to provide utmost luxury and modern aesthetics invite guests to relax and enjoy the journey. Enrique Concha & Co. of Santiago de Chile, a renowned design studio, carefully curated each aspect from the colors, materials and lighting to enhance your onboard experience.

Cabins and Suites

Magellan Explorer air cruises can accommodate up to 73 passengers in seven different categories. All cabins have private balconies, except for Porthole Cabins. In most double cabins, twin beds can be configured into a larger bed. The accommodation includes a closet, an individually-controlled heating system, a comfortable sitting area and a bathroom with heated floors and a shower.

Destination Experience from the Inside

Magellan Explorer’s public areas are designed with care to create a connection between the vessel and its environment. Accessible bow provides guests with a close proximity to water, allowing for unmatched wildlife photography and observation. A forward-facing lounge, bar and educational program, led by experts, create a memorable experience. Outdoor observation decks provide sweeping panoramas, encouraging close engagement with natural landscapes. Dining in the dining room is a scenic experience with its large windows. A meeting room is available, as are a library themed on Antarctica, a gift store, and an outdoor BBQ area with a shelter. There's also a sauna and gym.

Magellan Explorer Features

The ship is Polar Class 6 ice class (Lloyd's Register, PC6). The ship's stabilizers, bow thrusters and stern propellers ensure comfortable navigation and manoeuvrability. An ice-detecting system and an energy recovery system reduce the environmental impact of the vessel by reusing the heat produced by the engine to warm up the vessel.

And of course, the craft uses sustainable practices at all times to protect the South Pole’s one-of-a-kind ecosystem.

The Magellan Explorer offers seven distinct types of accommodations, from single rooms to deluxe veranda cabins to spacious triple suites. Nearly all boast floor-to-ceiling windows with private balconies, and with the exception of single rooms, all have twin beds that can be reconfigured as one king- or queen-size bed. Wardrobes, individually controlled heating, sitting areas, private bathrooms with showers, and heated floors round out the list of amenities, guaranteeing your voyage is personalized and comfortable.

Common Areas

The Magellan Explorer affords a variety of resources in its common areas. These include a glass-enclosed observation lounge, a dining room with panoramic windows, a meeting area with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, a sauna, and a medical clinic. When you’re not out exploring, you can read up on wildlife species in the library or work out in the deluxe gym, designed by Anytime Fitness, the only fitness company with boutique gyms on all seven continents. Best of all, the forward-facing observation deck opens onto the ship’s bow, allowing guests a perfect vantage point to spot marine wildlife. The ship also is equipped with a fleet of 10 Zodiac boats for on-shore adventures.

A view of going around the Port of Strait of Magellan

Strait of Magellan

Before the Panama Canal, there was the Strait of Magellan. This cinematic channel linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans cuts between the mainland tip of South America and Tierra del Fuego island. It was the passage of choice for seafaring transport between these two oceans until the Panama Canal shortened the distance by thousands of miles in 1914.

The first European to traverse its waters, all 560 kilometers (350 miles) in length and up to 32 kilometers (20 miles) in width of them, was Portuguese sailor Ferdinand Magellan, who did so in 1520 in the name of Spanish exploration. Magellan surely sailed mouth agape at the impressive glacial and mountainous scenery, the undiscovered colonies of Magellanic penguins, pods of humpback whales and schools of Commerson’s and Peale’s dolphins—all surely as equally agog with the presence of man in this Patagonian paradise. With photogenic Punta Arenas as its main port, the Strait of Magellan is a bucket-list voyage for intrepid adventurers the world over.
