Matt

Majorca is a popular European beach holiday destination, and it’s not difficult to guess why. This large Spanish island is home to some of Spain’s best beaches , UNESCO World Heritage sites, and charming seaside towns.

That said, it may feel overwhelming to choose what to see in Mallorca. You don’t need to stress, however, as we’ll help you find all the best day trips on the island, whether that’s coastline exploring or underwater experiences.

There are loads of beautiful places and things to see in Majorca. And your itinerary won’t be complete without adding some of the below fun Mallorca day trips to your list.

PS: Just to help allay any confusion, the island is also spelled Mallorca. Majorca and Mallorca are, in fact, the same place. Majorca is the Anglicized spelling for English speakers who battled to pronounce the ‘ll’ as a ‘j’ as done in Spanish.

Visiting Mallorca in 5 days: essentials to know

How to spend 5 days in mallorca .

It depends on your center of interest. There are many amazing places and activities. You can spend the entire time relaxing at the beach and enjoying the restaurants. But that would be a shame because the island is beautiful! I this article I recommend 5 types of itineraries, depending on your expectations: scenery, beach, adventures, no driving…

But before, I share those itineraries, here are some important tips to keep in mind .

Best things to do in Mallorca in 5 days

Are 5 days in Mallorca enough?

The island is bigger than one imagines. And there is much to do and visit. I think the best length for your Mallorca trip to enjoy a little bit of everything it has to offers is 2 weeks. With 5 days, you have to make specific choices to either:

  • pick one of everything (one cala, one village, one cave, one castle…)
  • or pick an area of the island , and decide to come back another time to cover the rest

Don’t jam-pack your road trip itinerary. You may want to stop at viewpoints, take side roads to explore hidden areas, or just stay longer in a village or at a beach because it is spectacular. Therefore, make sure to be reasonable in your planning.

Below is a map with the main driving times to give you perspective:

Driving times in Mallorca

How to get to Mallorca

Mallorca has a very large airport. There are many flights from most European countries.  Compare flight prices on Skyscanner

But you can also arrive by ferry from Barcelona or Valencia (roughly 8h crossing) – check out ferry options

How to get around

It is possible to explore some areas without a car: There are  guided tours  that can take you to the most famous places: caves, cliffs.  But Mallorca is so much more than that! There are so many viewpoints, stunning roads and hidden gems to discover… I really think renting a car is the best way to discover the island.

  • Compare prices on my favorite platform:  Discovercars.com  – one of the best rated comparison sites!
  • Choose your car and company (prefer a smaller car for the narrow roads)
  • Consider their full coverage option (I recommend it because of the narrow roads)
  • Book early  – there is limited supply as it is an island. Especially for Summer, make sure you can get a car, if booking your flights last minute.

See my  36 tips about renting a car in Mallorca And See my tips about driving in Mallorca.

Where to stay – best side of Mallorca

Well, there is no absolute best places to stay in Mallorca. It depends on what you are looking for. Below are some of my recommendations, when you have only 5 days, so that you are not too far away from the attractions

  • For a choice of restaurants and a main town –  see best rated accommodations in Palma
  • For beach + practical location to explore –  see best rated accommodations in Port d’Alcudia
  • For a party area –  see best rated accommodations in S’Arenal (not far from Palma de Mallorca)
  • For access to the best calas –  see best rated accommodations in Cala d’or
  • For families –  see best rated accommodations in Cala Millor  or in  Colonia Sant Jordi

Option 1 – Mallorca itinerary 5 days – road trip & variety

Introduction.

This itinerary is for the first time traveler who wants to see a little of everything the island has to offer: beaches, calas, medieval towns, charming villages, archaeological sites, caves, cliffs, mountains…

I have not included a few of the most famous locations, as I found them overrated and too crowded. I have chosen alternatives for you.

For this type of itinerary, renting a car is essential!Compare prices on my favorite platform: Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!

Option 2 – Mallorca in 5 days – best beaches itinerary

This 5 days Mallorca itinerary is for those who love discovering the most beautiful beaches and spending time relaxing there. It covers my selection of the most beautiful calas and beaches. Plus, I have added a few visits to combine with those beaches, if you don’t want to spend the entire day there.

For this type of itinerary, renting a car is essential! Compare prices on my favorite platform:  Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!

Alcudia beach

  • Day 1 – Formentor beach

Day 2 – Cala Pi & Cala Beltran

Day 3 – mondrago natural park, day 4 – calo des moro, day 5 – cala mesquida.

For this itinerary, you want to stay at a place with a beautiful beach you enjoy as well, if you want to change one day into a no travel day:

  • Colonia de Sant Jordi –   see best rated accommodations
  • Cala Millor –  see best rated accommodations
  • Alcudia or Port de Alcudia  –  see best rated accommodations

Colonia de Sant Jordi beach

Day 1 – Formentor Beach

Most publications choose Platja de Formentor as the most beautiful beach in Mallorca. Formentor beach is long and sandy, with shallow turquoise waters. And it has many facilities. The half circle bay offers beautiful views of mountains covered with pine trees.

And you can combine with a visit to the Formentor Peninsula and its impressive cliffs (or at least stop at Mirador Es Colomer on the way). Learn more about the Formentor peninsula

Platja de Formentor

Visit the narrow cove of Cala Pi. This is a great place for those who enjoy swimming. Go down 146 stairs to a sandy flat beach and crystal clear waters.

And for a little adventure, you can hike to the next water inlet called Cala Beltran. It is a beautiful walk with views almost all the way. And you can combine with a visit to the nearby Capocorp Vell, one of the main archaeological sites on the island.

Learn more in  my article about Cala Pi.

Cala Pi beach

The Mondrago Natural Park is famous for its white sand beaches, turquoise water and protected nature. Several hiking paths allow the visitors to find long, and small beaches, whilst admiring the cliff views. My favorite walk is #2, around the headland. It is popular but I think it remains a breath of fresh air as it is surrounded only by nature. The main beach is Cala de Mondrago. This one is a bit wider than most in this article. The other large beach is Cala s’Amarador. The water is crystal clear. Learn more

Mondrago Natural Park

Calo des Moro is a stunning gem. it is definitively worth the effort to reach it. The beach is actually very small, but the cove is mesmerizing which is why it is often listed as one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca. Its unique setting offers turquoise water and snorkeling opportunity along the cliffs. Plus, the little headland makes it not too wide and not too narrow.

See all my tips about visiting Calo des Moro.

Calo des Moro

Cala Mesquida is the most famous beach in the area of Arta and Capedepera. It is a long stretch of fine sand (350m) with sand dunes at the back. It is quite a different experience than the other calas on the island. Here the wind can be strong and create onshore waves. A resort town has developed around it, but does not bother you once on the beach, at the bottom of the cliffs.

You can combine with a visit to the Arta caves (my favorite) or the Castle of Capdepera.

Cala Mesquida

Option 3 – 5 days in Palma de Mallorca – day trips, no car

This 5 day option is for those who do not wish to rent a car, but still see a large variety of what the island as to offer.

  • Day 1 – Palma de Mallorca main touristic area
  • Day 2 – Port de Soller and Sa Calobra
  • Day 3 – Underground Caves
  • Day 4 – Palma de Mallorca, rest of town
  • Day 5 – Cape Formentor (cliffs, beach)

Days can be switched depending on availability. Avoid Palma de Mallorca on Sundays and Mondays (so that all monuments are open).

For this itinerary, better to stay in Palma de Mallorca for the largest choice of day trips –  see best rated accommodations

Day 1 – Palma de Mallorca

  • Stop 1 – Visit the Palma de Mallorca cathedral –  get a skip-the-line ticket
  • Stop 2 – Visit the Alumdeina Palace
  • Explore the cathedral areas, with its beautiful buildings
  • Get lost in side streets, to truly discover the city.

You can book a guided tour or segway tour or bike tour – see options

Day 2 – Port de Soller & Se Calobra

Have a travel adventure to the North coast with bus, tram and boat. Head to Port de Soller, where you can enjoy the vibrant seafront and historical tram. Then you hop on a boat to visit the Sa Calobra area.

Check out program and availability

Port de Soller

Day 3 – Caves

Mallorca is home to many fascinating caves ( see my list ). The most famous are Drach and Hams. My favorite is Arta. You can find day trips to the most famous cave to go underground, appreciate the formations and listen to music. Just know that the visits to Drach are made by huge groups.

This tour below offers the option to combine Drach and Hams caves.

Drach cave

Day 4 – Palma de Mallorca

On Day 1, you have explored the touristic center of Palma. Today, you can go further out.

  • Don’t miss the impressive round castle (Castell de Bellver).
  • Learn more about art at the Miro foundation
  • … and more!

Make you exploration easier with the hop-on-hop-off bus – get tickets

Alternative

And, do you love Spanish cuisine? Well, enjoy your last day immersing yourself in it.

  • Take part in a Spanish cooking class –  learn more and see availability
  • Join a wine and tapas tasting tour –  learn more and see availability

Choose among one of the many boat tours to gain another perspective on the island. Enjoy a relaxing time sailing. Note that, some of the best scenery is a boat tour around Formentor. Boats depart from Port de Alcudia. There is not always a pick up from Palma de Mallorca. You would have to take the bus or a taxi (around 80 – 90 euros). So doing a boat tour from Palma is a much more affordable option.

See the options

Tapas in Mallorca

Day 5 – Alcudia and Formentor

History and scenery. Enjoy one of the most beautiful areas in Mallorca. Visit the medieval towns of Alcudia and Pollença, before discovering the Formentor peninsula. You will be able to see a lot! However, beware that for Formentor, you will mostly see the beach and the views from the road. No other stops planned.

Charming street of Alcudia

Option 4 – 5 days in Mallorca off the beaten path

Mallorca is very popular as a tourist destination. It can be very crowded. 3 options to get away from the crowds:

  • Start your day around sunrise
  • Travel off season
  • Go to less touristic places

For this type of itinerary, renting a car is essential! Compare prices on my favorite platform:  Discovercars.com – one of the best rated comparison sites!

Day 1 – Central Mallorca

Day 2 – s’estalella, cala pi, cala beltran, day 3 – east of alcudia.

  • Day 4 – Capdepera area
  • Or you can find an accommodation off the beaten path in the center of the island!

Explore the center of Mallorca. Everyone rushes to the beautiful beaches and mountains. But the central countryside also has a lot of charm. Some of my favorite places to visit include:

  • Stop 1 – the small town of Sineu, in the heart of Mallorca
  • Stop 2 – the museu Etnologic Calderers with farm, casa and museum – to learn about life of the island
  • Stop 3 – the Campanet caves – the island has many famous caves. These get hardly any visitors compared to the large ones. Yet, they have some of the most beautiful formations.

Sineu

Cala Pi can have quite a lot of visitors, but still a lot less than the calas closest to the resort towns. Plus, the hike to Cala Beltran is stunning and without crowds. Learn more in my article about Cala Pi and Beltran .

Then I recommend enjoying the walk to S’Estallela lighthouse and tower. Most of it is walking on an easy, flat path. Therefore, I think it is worth the effort (1h30 return). The walk takes around a headland that includes sea caves, rock formations, a small lighthouse and a historical tower. The defensive tower dates back to 1577 (and restored in 1984). It is cylindrical at the top and conical at the bottom. Its height is 9.2m (30ft). The best part is the mix of nature with the constructions.

Cala Beltran

When everyone heads to Alcudia, Port de Alcudia and Playa del Muro, head East. You can find much quieter areas with interesting sites and views such as:

  • Son Real – with the necropolis by the sea and maritime towers with a fascinating history (to train submarines).
  • The small dunes of Playa Son Serra
  • The very peaceful coast at Betlem

Necropolis de Son Real

Day 4 – Arta – Capdepera area

Explore the Capdepera area. It still has a lot of people, but being on the opposite side from Palma de Mallorca, it can have quite moments. Consider visiting:

  • The Arta caves – I think this cave is much better than the more famous ones on the island, and it is less crowded
  • The castle of Capdepera, with views over the town and the region
  • The Capdepera lighthouse and have fun on the rocky headlands
  • The Ses Paisses Archaeological site in Arta

Learn more in  my article about the best things to do in Capdepera.

Day 5 – Palma de Mallorca off the beaten path

It is not easy going off the beaten path in a Major city. But there are still a few places where you will not be surrounded by hundreds of tourists, such as:

  • The historical Arab Baths
  • Plaça de ses Columnes
  • Jardi del Bisbe
  • and if you are getting lost by taking side streets…

  • It is a river bed and it can be hiked only during the dry months (meaning the hottest months)
  • Always check the weather forecast as the area can have flash floods
  • You can start the hike at the top, at Café Escorca (on Ma-10) and walk down
  • Or you can start at the bottom and hike up
  • It is a difficult hike with large boulders, tight squeezes, vertigo inducing area and steep sections
  • Ropes are required on this hike
  • You can book a guided hike to be safer –  see options

Day 3 – Coasteering

One of the most famous activities in Mallorca is coastering and cliff jumping. It combines stunning views, water activities and some big adrenaline rush.

Day 4 – Kayak

One of the best way to appreciate the landscapes, in my opinion, it by renting a kayak or a paddle board. The gliding on water while watching the scenery is mesmerizing.

Otherwise, you can also find some rentals on many beaches such as Formentor, Mondrago…

It can vary greatly depending on your type of accommodation, your car rental, your choice of activities and the season…

Count an average of 900 to 1100 euros for a couple. But off season, with cheap accommodations, bus travel and only free activities you can spend 5 days for less than 500 euros.

Mallorca itinerary by bus in 5 days

There is a good network of bus around the island. But it will greatly limit what you can see and for how long. Check out the bus network on this official website .

For this itinerary, better to stay in Palma de Mallorca for the largest choice of bus routes – see best rated accommodations

From Palma de Mallorca you can go to:

  • Port de Soler
  • Port d’Andratx
  • Cala Pi (in Summer only)
  • Cala Millor

Best time to visit Mallorca

The traveling season in Mallorca is quite long with pleasant temperatures. You can even enjoy Winter in Mallorca if you don’t mind a little chill (temperatures between 12 and 15°C). It has charm in any season…  The best time, depends on what you are looking for:

  • Crowds – Mallorca is a very popular destination. The Summer Months get crazy with full beaches and attractions. Even October remains a busy month. Not crazy but busy. So the shoulder months are quieter (April/May and October). But if you want peaceful, visit in Winter – you can have the roads almost to yourself!
  • Weather – The temperatures get really hot in Summer, are very pleasant in shoulder months and are chilly in Winter.
  • Swimming – Summer is the best times to swim in warm waters.
  • Hiking / biking – But, if you are planning a hiking or bicycle riding trip, then avoid Summer as you may melt because of the temperatures.

4 pictures of place om Mallorca to visit on a day trip from Palma

The Best Day Trips from Palma

If you are visiting Palma de Mallorca for a couple of days, it’s always a good idea to take a day trip from the city to get to know the island a bit. As Mallorca isn’t really large (3,640 sq. km), any place on the island is a feasible day trip destination from Palma. You will be amazed of the variety of places the island has to offer: cute little villages, stunning nature, sunny beaches, beautiful caves, and a handful of authentic experiences.

When I visited Palma on a city trip in the winter, I took a day tour to Pollença to see a bit more of the island. Unfortunately, I wasn’t staying long enough to get to know well the island, so I asked fellow travel bloggers, which were their favorite day trips from Palma. So, here are their recommendations for the best places to visit on a day trip from Palma de Mallorca.

Pollença is a small adorable town in the north part of the island and it makes for a great day trip from Mallorca’s capital. If you have a car, the ride takes less than an hour (55 km), but Pollença is easily accessible by public transport. Take bus line 301 from Palma to Port de Pollença and get off at bus stop 42001 in Pollença.

When in Pollença, take a walk along the narrow cobbled streets and visit the local museum , located in the old cloister of the Dominicans. The museum in Pollença hides some real treasures, among which are a great collection of works of Anglada Camarasa , Tito Citadini and other artists who came to Mallorca at the beginning of the 20th century.

a meadieval church on a square with a cafe next door with tables on the square and beautiful plane trees, Pollensa town on mallorca

Afterwards head to Plaça Major and visit the lovely 13th-century church Our Lady of the Angels ( Esglèsia de Nostra Senyora dels Àngels ). Then take a stop for some refreshments at one of the many cafes at the square, before you continue wandering the medieval streets. Make your way to the so-called Roman bridge ( Pont Romà ), which was believed to be built in the days of the Roman empire.

The most famous attraction in Pollença is the Calvari hill with the small chapel on it. Beside the stunning views from the top of the hill, the place is famous for the reenactment of the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday each year, which symbolizes the way of Jesus to the crucifixion. There is a staircase with 365 steps that leads from behind the Church of Our Lady of the Angels to the top of the hill. However, my advice will be to take the road to the top of the hill and then descend to the square via the staircase.

Some 30 kilometers from Palma de Mallorca is the village of Alaró. Since many of its inhabitants commute to the capital, Alaró is well-connected by bus and rail. Alternatively, you can rent a vehicle such as a scooter to travel around Mallorca . Both modes take about 30 to 40 minutes travel time.

When approaching from Consell, you’ll see the two peaks Puig d’Alaró and Puig de s’Alcadena like a gateway. It’s a beautiful vista that looks like it’s straight from a Medieval fantasy movie. Once in Alaró , you can enjoy the pleasantness of this cool and quiet village. But the main activity is to either hike up or drive and then hike up to Castell d’Alaró on the peak of the same name.

a stone path with stairs against a rock and winding towards ruins of a castle, blue sky and green trees, castell d'Alaro ruins on mallorca

If you have your own vehicle or pay for a taxi, you can drive up the hairpin-turn road to a restaurant called Es Verger . This takes about 25 minutes by vehicle or 90 minutes on foot. From there, continue on foot as the road quality deteriorates. It’s a 2.6-kilometer or a 50-minute hike through a beautiful forest to the ruins of Castell d’Alaró .

You can spend a good hour or two at the peak enjoying the vistas and wandering among the beautiful ruins. The castle dates back to the early 10th century and was a place of refuge for islanders during several sieges and conquests. After its gradual abandonment starting in the 14th century, it became a religious refuge.

On a clear day, you’ll see the highest peak Puig Major with its military radar dome, the twin peak across the valley, and the rest of the Serra de Tramuntana and its villages. Enjoy lunch or an excellent cup of coffee at the inn on the peak.

To visit one of the best attractions on Mallorca Cap de Formentor , catch bus 340 in Palma de Mallorca, then change it for the 353 in Port de Pollença. It is also a good idea to leave your car there if you are driving. Roads in the northern part of the island are very narrow and quickly become overcrowded. You can also book a day trip from Palma to Cap de Formentor, if you don’t feel like driving:

If you decide to drive a car, but get stuck in a traffic jam between Port de Pollença and Cap de Formentor, stop at one of the most beautiful beaches on the island – Platja de Formentor . Stunning views of the Tramuntana mountains and crystal clear water make it a top location for taking incredible photos in Mallorca.

On the beach, you will find L’Espigó bar where you can eat something before heading off to Cap de Formentor. This northernmost point of the island attracts many tourists every year. Breathtaking cliffs and incredible blue water offer the best views in Mallorca.

a promontory in the sea with sharp edges as seen from some cliffs; Cap de Formentor on Mallorca island

The 12 kilometres long peninsula is really worth a visit. Mirador Es Colomer viewpoint is a great place to stop in Cap de Formentor. You can capture beautiful pictures of the sea and the Serra de Tramuntana cliffs.

Fun fact: The cultural landscape of Serra de Tramuntana is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

Cala Figuera or Cala Murta are other great spots that Cap de Formentor has to offer. This northernmost point of the island is relatively close to Palma de Mallorca, as it only takes 1h 15minutes to drive there. However, exploring all places in the peninsula might take time so I would recommend planning a nice day trip to Cap de Formentor.

Coves dels Hams , or sometimes referred to as Hams Caves is a great place to visit on a day trip from Palma de Mallorca. The caves are located on the east side of Mallorca (or Majorca) . The Mallorcan name of the caves Cuevas dels Hams in exact translation means “the fishhook caves”. The name comes from the strange shape stalactites and stalagmites. And yes, you guessed they have a shape of a fish hook. Although the caves were formed during prehistoric times, they were only discovered at the beginning of the 20th century.

stalactites and stalagmites in a cave lighted by bluish and purple lights, Coves del Hams on the island of Mallorca

Visitors to the Coves dels Hams are let in organized groups on specific time slots, and the tour starts with a movie about how the cave got discovered. This informative movie lasts around 15 to 20 minutes and shows some spectacular footage of the cave. After the movie, you get to explore various cave chambers , all with nice light or laser show . One of the shows includes “ Magical Mozart ” – a light and music show presented in the cave on the underground lake.

Visit in the cave takes around 40 minutes, but around the cave, you can find a great picnic area, or you can finish your trip by having a delicious lunch in the nearby town of Porto Cristo , as we did and after that, we took a short boat cruise, which all made a perfect day trip out of Palma.

Cuevas dels Hams are located close to the town of Porto Cristo, so it would be better to rent a car to get there, though you may as well go by bus (line 401). By bus the trip would take over 90 minutes, while by car its around 50 minutes. Entry tickets to the caves cost around 20 EUR.

If you do not want to take care yourself of the logistics, you can always opt for an organized tour from Palma to Porto Cristo and the Coves dels Hams:

One of the most popular day trips from Palma is to Sóller and Port de Sóller . The main reasons that tourists choose to go to these two beautiful towns in the west of the island is the vintage train that takes them there, followed by the old 1913’s tram that is still in function.

Riding the vintage train from Palma to Sóller is an experience in itself. The train was inaugurated in 1912 with much joy, as it finally connected the orange producing town of Sóller with the harbour in Palma. A year later, the tram connecting Sóller with Port de Sóller was put in function as well, which opened up the trade from the sea – taking oranges and olives to the Port and bringing back fish to Sóller. Back then, the tram was used mostly to transport goods.

You can book a trip to Sóller here:

The wooden train has many original elements that were never changed. It is really well maintained so that visitors can have an authentic experience . The train leaves Palma and, one hour later, arrives in Sóller. It passes through beautiful mountain scenery and stops at a viewpoint from where you can see the town of Sóller from above.

a bird's-eye view of a small town with some low hanging clouds and a mountainous range as a backdrop, view of Soller on Mallorca island

The trip to Sóller and Port de Sóller takes the entire day. The two towns couldn’t be more different from each other. Sóller is a quiet town with a gorgeous architecture, with quite a few buildings being designed by Joan Rubió y Bellver , who worked with Gaudí on Sagrada Familia , Parc Güell, and Casa Batlló in Barcelona. On the other hand, Port de Sóller is a vibrant seaside resort with restaurants lined along the seafront and yachts anchored in the marina.

The tiny settlement of Sa Calobra is only a bit more than an hour away from Palma, but it feels like another world. Located on the northwest coast of Mallorca, it’s among some of the most dramatic landscapes on the island.

Getting to Sa Calobra is easiest by car, but it is possible to take the bus (or train) to Sóller, and continue by bus to Sa Calobra. In the summer months, you’ll also find ferry services from Port de Sóller to Sa Calobra, so if you had an entire day up your sleeve, you could enjoy a train ride to Sóller, followed by the vintage tram to Port de Sóller, and continue by ferry to Sa Calobra. If you decide to drive, the road is wild and interesting , and there are some incredible viewpoints along the way too.

Once you reach Sa Calobra, there is a large paid parking lot. Leave the car and proceed by foot down to the first beach . Small, but scenic, it’s a lovely place for a swim. But undoubtedly, the main event is a short walk away. Follow the main promenade, past the smattering of cafes and souvenir shops, until there’s nothing left but you and nature .

a small beach framed by two vertical cliffs with a bit of a sea visible the the background, Torrent de Pareis on Mallorca

After a short stroll, you’ll find the tunnel entrance to Torrent de Pareis . Widely known as one of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca , its unusual shape sets it apart. Here you can relax in nature, with none of the usual distractions of a popular beach – there aren’t any services, loungers, or watersports on offer, but that just adds to the tranquility. You’ll need to allow at least 2 hours in Sa Calobra to enjoy the beaches and grab a bite to eat in a waterfront bar, but you could easily spend a whole day.

Valldemossa , a historic city only a half hour drive from Palma de Mallorca, is an excellent day trip. The quaint village is on a hilltop with views of the terraced valley below.

Stroll the narrow, car-free cobbled alleyways to soak in Spanish history and culture. Visit the parish church of Valldemossa to learn of Santa Catalina Thomas , the first patron saint of Mallorca.

a medieval village on hilltop with some church towers and a sloping hill of eak at the background, Valldemossa on Mallorca island

Polish composer Frederick Chopin and his lover known by her pen name George Sand spent a winter in Valldemossa. Visitors can enjoy the museum that houses Chopin‘s piano .

For outdoor enthusiasts stunning hikes in the Tramuntana mountains start in Valldemossa. The views from the ridges of the coast and the mountains are spectacular in this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Browse the weekly outdoor market for scrumptious food and local fruits and vegetables. Handicrafts and textiles found at the market make welcome gifts. The market is on Sunday and located not far from the Tourism office.

Valldemossa is an easy bus ride or car trip from Palma de Mallorca and makes for a fabulous day trip. However, if you can book a room in town, you can wake up to the morning sun over the valley and share the quiet alleys with only the locals. As Valldemossa is a popular tourist destination, you will enjoy the uncrowded mornings in the village.

Another option would be to book a day trip from Palma to Valldemossa. There are also tours that combine a few places in Serra Tramuntana , or a day trip with a walking tour of Valldemossa.

There are charming cafes around the town for socializing and people watching. Try the rustic Quita Penas restaurant for amazing tapas . You can be back in Palma de Mallorca for your evening plans after a fabulous day visiting Valldemossa.

Fornalutx is a picturesque small village located in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains that can easily be visited on a day trip from Palma. And since it’s very close to Sóller, you can even combine the two.

The best way to get there is by car, so my advice is to rent one, at least for a few days out of your vacation. Despite the fact that public transportation is generally very well organized, a Mallorca road trip is a better and more flexible way to discover the island. The journey from Palma to Fornalutx usually takes around 45 minutes and you will find a small parking spot right at the entrance of the village. Another option is to visit by bus: take line 204 to Sóller and get out at stop Cetre , where you’ll change to line 232 to Fornalutx. You can pay by card on the bus.

a very narrow cobbled street with green potted plants along the houses, Fornalutx on Mallorca

Once you arrive at the village, the best thing to do is to get lost in its tiny, cobblestone alleys , lined up with potted plants, and admire the impressive backdrop of the mountains that surround Fornalutx. Hikers will also be delighted to know that there are several walking trails to choose from. Just make sure to start your day early if you plan on doing one.

The bare minimum to spend in Fornalutx is one to two hours. This will be more than enough to explore the tiny village , but you’ll need to add more time if you plan to hike or stop at one of the few restaurants in the main square to grab something to eat or a drink.

Other day trips from Palma

The best part about Mallorca is that you can visit a few places from Palma on a day trip. Even if you decide to spend more time on the island, you don’t need to move around in order to discover Mallorca. You can stay in Palma and explore Mallorca one day tour at a time. Renting a car is a good option, but for a stress-free travel I recommend booking a tour. Thus, you won’t be fussing around about the logistics and as most of the tours are guided, you’ll learn also a lot the places that you are visiting on Mallorca.

a steep coastline with a round tower and some yacht boats in the sea around the island of Mallorca

If you visiting Palma in the summer, you might love to get on the water. You can book a cruise with a catamaran in Palma Bay, or a boat trip along the coast with some sightseeing.

Are you a wine lover? Mallorca won’t disappoint you. In the last years the wine industry on the islands is booming and there are many small private wineries scattered all over the island. You can visit some of them with a wine tour from Palma, which includes also wine tasting.

Best summer day trips in Mallorca

Top places for that memorable island experience

Every year, visitors from all over the world flock to Mallorca's coastline to soak up the glorious Mediterranean sunshine, golden sandy beaches and turquoise sea waters. However, there is much more to this island than a beach holiday resort.

Prepared to be inspired by these wonderful day trips where you can explore the real Mallorca. They're full of history, culture and natural beauty.

Best 8 day trips in Mallorca

Mallorca's caves

There are a number of caves on the island but the underground lakes of  Coves del Drach , on the east coast, make this particular landmark stand out from the crowd. The caves here receive thousands of visitors each day in peak summertime but don’t be put off as there’s plenty of space to view the impressive formations inside. The cave is colossal and, as the path winds through it, you'll be met with an ever-changing alien-like landscape that wouldn't be out of place in an Indiana Jones film. The entrance fee includes a concert in the heart of the cave where you'll be able to listen to classical music played by musicians being driven in illuminated boats along the peaceful lake. There are also  guided trips to the Coves , perfect for a hassle-free experience.

Alternatively, the ancient Coves d’Arta in the northeast of the island are also a popular spot for culture vultures looking to explore some of Mallorca’s hidden natural beauty. Within the 45-minute tour, visitors get up close and personal with a fascinating network of underground caverns packed full of stalactites and stalagmites.

Lluc Sanctuary, Lluc

Santuari de Lluc

Lluc Sanctuary  is often described as the spiritual centre of the island, perhaps because it was the first of its kind established in Mallorca. Dating back to the 13th century, it was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and her blackened sandstone medieval statue can still be found in a small chapel behind the church. She is said to symbolise the end of suffering for those pilgrims who come to visit her.

You don't have to be religious to enjoy this place and  the sanctuary acts as a hotel , welcoming guests looking for a peaceful experience in the mountains. Lluc Sanctuary's museum showcases ancient remains discovered in the area and also contains the most complete ceramic collection on the island – it's well worth a visit. We also recommend heading up to the crucifix for terrific views over the island. It’s possible to visit the sanctuary on your own accord, with your own private guide or, even better,  on horseback .

Best 8 day trips in Mallorca

Bodegas of Mallorca

A trip to a  Mallorcan bodega  (or winery) is a wonderful way of immersing yourself in the land and flavours of the island. Not only that, but many of the bodegas are located on some of the island’s handsome estates with charming historic buildings. The main house at  Can Ribas  dates back to 1776 and maintains its authentic features, such as the charming inner courtyard and stone kitchen. It is frequented by history lovers who want to sample some of the oldest wines on the island and offers tours and tastings. Do be sure to book in advance.

Alternatively, the fincas at 21st-century  Bodegas Angel  may fool you because they been built to look old, but there is an immaculate feel to the place. Situated only 20km north of Palma, the backdrop to the vines are the  Tramuntana mountains  and the terracotta roofs of the neighbouring town. A  tour of the bodega , with wine tasting and accompanying Mallorcan snacks is a perfect way to pass the afternoon by.

Discovering Palma Bike Tour, Palma de Mallorca

Palma by bike

If you want to pack more into your day trip, discovering Palma by bike might be more up your street. Various companies offer relaxed rides through the city, passing by the most prominent sites from  La Seu Cathedral  to the 300-year-old café where  Joan Miró  used to enjoy churros and chocolate. A knowledgeable guide usually leads the exploration, providing interesting information and insight into the history and culture of the island. Palma is a very bike-friendly city and tours are open to beginners and children. You'll also get a real sense of the city as you ride down narrow streets, stop at the local farmer's market and end your tour with tapas in bustling  Plaça Major .

Best 8 day trips in Mallorca

Dragonera Day Trip

We would highly recommend hopping across to the island of Dragonera . This isle is a small protected nature reserve and can only be reached by boat. It’s popular for those keen to get up close and personal with nature as it is home to indigenous lizards and 360 different species of plants. Once there, you can take a hiking trail to one of the lighthouses, visit the small museum, bathe or snorkel. Boat trips are available from  Palma de Mallorca ,  Port d'Andratx , Peguera and Santa Ponsa.

Fall for autumn 2018 in Mallorca

Els Calderers & La Granja

A traditional country manor situated in the sleepy plains of central Mallorca,  Els Calderers de Sant Joan House and Gardens  gives you a taste of life on a noble estate some 250 years ago. Lush creepers climb up the sandstone facade of the main building and wrought iron torch holders stand dormant at each side of the arched entrance guarded by stone lions. Inside, time has stood still. Libraries, hunting rooms, bedrooms and servant quarters are open for viewing, each room packed with the furniture and trinkets from the past. The manor even has its own peaceful chapel where mass would have been held every morning.

In the wine cellar, you can help yourself to a glass of Moscatel from an old barrel and savour the delicious sweet wine while you try to decipher the writing on century-old export papers displayed on the walls. Els Calderers is open from 10:00 to 18:00 and, if you go early, you might find you have the house to yourself.

Best 8 day trips in Mallorca

There’s plenty of opportunity to explore Mallorca’s coastline by boat, whether through a scheduled boat trip or by booking a private charter . The main ports around the island have a variety of options to choose from, whether it be snorkelling trips , sunset sails , or a glass-bottom boat tour you are seeking. Either way, the island’s magical coastline should be viewed from the sea!

Best 8 day trips in Mallorca

Did you know Mallorca is famous for its hiking ? And what better way to get up close and personal with the island than on foot? There are hundreds of trails available for all levels. From an eight-day trek through to a short tryst across the coastline to a lighthouse, there’s plenty to get you moving.

Please note, this article is full of information and companies associated with these trips.

8 Great Day Trips in Southern and Central Mallorca

  • Last Updated February 26, 2023
  • Spain , Europe

Mallorca can suffer from an unfairly negative reputation. Many people consider Mallorcan holidays as a synonym for the tightly-packed highrise hotels of Magaluf and the beaches surrounding the Badia de Palma where young sunseekers head for a week of booze, sex and partying without realising that the Balaeric’s largest island has boundless diversity and a rich cultural history.

Consider the island’s southern shores; the area sandwiched between Palma de Mallorca and Far des Cap de ses Salines is relatively undeveloped. High, rugged cliffs disguise hidden coves and pristine beaches while the rough scrub of pine and juniper provides habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna.

Then there is central Mallorca. While many people only pass through the island’s interior, it is home to beautiful rural towns hewn from golden sandstone, traditional churches, and hilltop monasteries surrounded by fields of olive trees where the more intrepid explorers can entertain themselves for weeks with countryside hikes, wine tastings at idyllic  fincas  and even partaking in some of Mallorca’s most exuberant  fiestas .

If you’re looking to get away from the poolside of your resort – even just for a day – here are some of the best day trips in southern and central Mallorca.

Cuevas del Drac

The Cuevas del Drac, or Caves of the Dragon, are easily the island’s most popular tourist attraction outside of Palma de Mallorca. Located on the east side of Mallorca just outside of the town of Porto Cristo, this impressive collection of four caves – Black Cave, White Cave, Cave of Luis Salvador, and Cave of the French – reach depths of 25 metres and are all interconnected. It is thought that the caves date back to the Miocene Epoch and were formed by water being forced through the entrance from the Mediterranean Sea.

Although there is no guided tour on offer for visitors, a trip around the caves does end in a classical music performance from four musicians on a boat as they glide across Martel Lake, one of the world’s largest underground lakes, as it is gradually illuminated. Despite being a little kitsch, the scale of the cave and lake do make for an impressive spectacle. Afterwards, you are able to take a short boat ride.

The caves get very busy so I would advise arriving early. From the village of Porto Cristo, Cuevas del Drac are well signposted.

Cala Figuera & Cala Santanyi

Low, whitewashed houses line the long, fjord-like, Y-shaped bay of Cala Figuera, possibly Mallorca’s most picturesque fishing village. Named for the fig trees that perch on the low cliffs bounding the two inlets (Caló  d’En   Boira  and Caló  d’En   Busques ), Cala Figuera is still very much a  working  fishing village despite the surge in rental properties popping up along the  harbour  front; lines of  colourful  washing hang from the green shuttered windows, ropes and nets litter the waterfront walkways and the garages of the fishermen’s homes still house small boats. stick around until the late afternoon – usually between 3 and 5pm – if you want to catch a glimpse of the boats returning with their catch.

Expect to find plenty of this fish and seafood served in the  harbour  restaurants, which are stocked by the local fishermen and offer some of the freshest seafood on the island.

best day trips mallorca

Just 5km north of Cala Figuera and accessible by train is the idyllic and tranquil Santanyi. A town with a slow pace of life, Santanyi is typically Mallorcan; quiet, cobbled streets run through the rows of gold stone buildings and a stunning church of Sant Andreu sits at the village centre. The weekly market that occupies the pedestrianised streets around the church each Wednesday and Saturday is worth a visit.

If You would prefer to get out in nature, the 760-acre Parc Natural de Mondragó begins just north of Cala Figuera and is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, from wild goats and weasels to Mediterranean turtles.

Caló d'es Moro

On an island famed for its stunning beaches, the argument of which stretches of sand are Mallorca’s finest are always going to be hotly debated. However, one that is often cited is Caló des Moro. This tiny cove of virgin sand and crystal clear turquoise water is hidden by steep cliffs at either side ad is not easily accessible, except by descending narrow ‘steps’ in the cliff face. Despite this, it is fairly popular with locals and due to its tiny size – just 15m wide and 50m long – getting a spot for your beach towel can be a struggle in the summer months.

Calo des Moro beach in Mallorca, Spain

Thankfully, just across the headland from the sandy beach, a minuscule small cove populated with a small number of boat sheds provides another bathing spot while many people decide to sunbathe the elevated rocks that surround another calm and tranquil cove.

As it is not well signposted, getting to Caló des Moro can be a bit of a struggle. The best option is to head towards  Cala  Llombards  from  Santanyí  and park in Sa  Comuna . Caló des Moro beach is a short 1km walk from the  S’Almunia  road and if it is a sunny day, you should be able to follow the trail of people wandering down to the cove.

Calo des moro bay in Mallorca

Felanitx & The Sanctuary of Sant Salvador

Despite appearing sleepy and rural, the town of Felanitx is actually one of the largest in south Mallorca with over 17,000 inhabitants and a bustling weekly market that surrounds the church of Sant Miquel sees crowds descend on the historic centre every Wednesday. Expect to find plenty of capers, the local speciality and local pottery displayed on the church steps.

Although Felanitx relies mostly on tourism nowadays, the town is known for its agricultural history and remains a prominent producer of wine, sitting at the centre of Mallorca’s second-largest wine region. It is these vineyards that put Felanitx on the map and during the 19th century, quickly becoming Mallorca’s third city after Palma and Alcudia. However, the town’s history goes back much further, with settlements here both in the bronze age and during the time of the Roman Empire. During Muslim rule between 902 & 1229, Felanitx had a mosque and the site of Santuari Castle was a fortress.

Beyond the town itself, there are a number of attractions in the area around Felanitx. Santuari Castle – dating from 1228 – sits on a hill overlooking the town and the monastery of Sant Salvador has existed since 1348, with the current structure being built in 1707-34. It was the senior house of Mallorca’s monastic order despite losing its last monks in the early 90s, remains a popular place of pilgrimage for Christians. Even if you are not religious, the views from the terrace take in Cabrera, Cap de Formentor and several other hilltop sanctuaries dotted across the region.

Palma de Mallorca

Considered by many to be one of the prettiest cities in the Mediterranean, the medieval city of Palma is the beating heart of Mallorca. Brimming with history, culture and foodie delights, this vibrant city is the ideal city break.

Towering over the coastline of Badia de Palma, Palma de Majorca dates back to the 13th century when Christian invaders reclaimed the island from the Moors and set about leaving their mark on the city and its skyline with the construction of the towering La Seu Cathedral.

However, before this, plenty of diverse cultures and occupants left a lasting legacy in Palma. The Romans and Vandals have both called this corner of Mallorca home at some point or other.

The sundry historic influences have created a melting pot of architectural styles. Wandering the maze-like, pastel-hued streets that spider-web out from La Seu and its gothic surroundings, you will find narrow medieval streets punctuated with beautiful plazas and ornate churches.

If you’re short on time, various walking tours offer to show you the city from varying perspectives; whether a deep dive into Palma’s Jewish district, a closer look at the beautiful Art Nouveau architecture or tapas bar and market hopping on a foodie adventure around the city centre.

Beyond Palma’s fascinating history, you will find a vibrant, modern city that boasts an energetic nightlife, edgy bohemian neighbourhoods, art galleries and a food scene that will have you salivating.

Getting to Palma

The majority of roads in Mallorca converge in Palma – after all, almost half of the island’s residents live here – so it is very well signposted and easy to reach from the south coast. If travelling by car, head north towards Campos where you can join the eastbound Ma19 in the direction of the coast and Palma de Mallorca.

Traffic reduction measures mean that much of the narrow city centre streets are car-free so you are better off parking in one of the blue parking zones or underground car parks on the outskirts.

By bus, the 501 service provides transport from Manacor (once per hour), Campos and Felantix (every half an hour) to Palma and takes approximately 1 hour 25. From Cala D’or you can take the 514 to Felantix or 515 to Campos and switch to the 501.

Palma de Mallorca's Le Seu Cathedral

Es Trenc & Platja de Sa Ràpita

With many of South Mallorca’s best beaches being littered with hotels apartment buildings, you may have to travel a little beyond the well-trodden resort towns to find a stretch of unspoilt sand. Luckily just 11km south of Campos, you will find Es Trenc and Platja de Sa Rapita, two adjoining natural beaches that together make up a 5km long, pristine beach ideal for a little relaxation or a long walk. This is one of Mallorca’s most beautiful dune beaches so can become a little crowded during the summer months. There are car parks nearby (6 Euros per day) but it is possible to park at Sa Rapita’s yacht harbour if these become full and take the free shuttle bus to Es Trenc.

Sineu Market

Sitting at Mallorca’s centre, the rural town of Sineu is one of Mallorca’s most historically significant settlements, known as Sinium to the Romans and Yiynau by the Moors. It even hosted a royal residence during the era of King Juame II. Although the palace is now a nunnery the town still bears many hallmarks of its time as an important hub, particularly in its architecture. Sineu was home to the first hospital in Mallorca and a particularly impressive parish church, which dates back to 1240, is amongst the oldest anywhere on the island. The large main square of Sineu, Plaza Des Fossar, is a fantastic place to relax and soak up the atmosphere.

Sineu’s main draw is the weekly market that is held each Wednesday in Plaza Des Fossar. Started in 1306 by Jaume II, Sineu market is one of the oldest in Mallorca. Although traditionally dedicated to agriculture and animal farming, the market is now is more of a tourist attraction; Spilling away from the main square, the maze of side streets is crammed with stalls selling a huge range of goods such as fruit and veg ceramics, clothes, and artisan foods such as cheese and meats.

At its heart though. Sineu market is still very much a farmer’s market and the only remaining open market in Mallorca where farm animals are bought and sold so expect to see chickens, doves, lambs, goats and even cows up for sale.

best day trips mallorca

Cutting half a kilometre inland where the glittering turquoise water is framed by steep-sided cliffs just 100m apart, the natural harbour of Cala Pi is one of Mallorca’s most picture-perfect coves.

The beach itself is rather small – measuring just 140 metres wide and 45 metres long – and is accessed by a steep 147-step staircase that leads down from the villa-lined ridge that shelters the fjord-like estuary. The pines, oaks and maquis that surround the bay add a secluded, as does the fact that the Torrent de Cala Pi’s curve shelters the fine, white sand beach from the open sea.

Although the beach and the4 pretty, white-washed boat houses that surround the bat are Cala Pi’s principal attractions, the small town itself has the interesting claim of being one of Mallorca’s oldest settlements (the nearby Bronze Age settlement of Capocorb Vell is considered to be one of the most important archaeological sites on the island and can be visited). Only around 600 people currently call the village home but there is a small church, Nostra Senyora des Angels, and a number of shops.

Ultimate Mallorca Travel Guide: Everything To Know for an Epic Trip

Looking for the ultimate Mallorca travel guide to make sure you plan the best Spanish island vacation? You’re in the right place!

Breathe in the salty breeze, feel the sand between your toes, and drink ALL the epic Spanish wine because you’re in Mallorca! When we visited for a week, Caleb and I fell in love with the island for it’s weather, epic food, beaches, and the overall chill-but-romantic vibes. It is not the 21-year-old party island we expected, and we cannot wait to return!

Whether you’re a couple who wants a lively vacation or one more chill-by-the-beach, Mallorca understands the assignment. In this ultimate Mallorca tourist guide, we’ll cover EVERYTHING you need to know to plan your trip.

Let’s dig in, starting with a video of some Mallorca highlights!

From the author: We spent a week in Mallorca and traveled around using various transportation, so we know all the insider tips for the island. If you have any questions, leave a comment and I’ll get back to you ASAP!

Where is Mallorca in Spain

Mallorca is in the Mediterranean Sea, off the eastern coast of Spain, and about 170 miles from Barcelona. It is east of the more well-known Balearic island, Ibiza. However, it is the largest of the Balearic islands in the archipelago.

How to Get to Mallorca

You can get to Mallorca by ferry if you are already near the coast. The ferry connects Mallorca with Ibiza, Menorice, Valencia, Barcelona, and Denia.

You can also fly to Mallorca from large cities within Spain like Madrid or Barcelona, and many European budget airlines can get you there.

From the USA, you can fly into cities like Madrid or Lisbon and then connect to the international Palma de Mallorca airport. The only direct flight is from Newark, New Jersey.

Where to Stay in Mallorca

Caleb and I think there are 4 best places to stay in Mallorca, depending on what you’re looking for. Here is everything at a glance, followed by a quick breakdown if you need more information.

  • Palma: The heart of Mallorca, and our recommended pick. Palma is unbeatable for its history, culture, and excellent public transport. It’s really close to the airport , and we think it is the best place to stay to be in the center of everything.

Hotel Recommendations are above or >>   Or, click here to check out prices and photos of other places to stay in Palma  <<

2. Santanyi & Colonia De Sant Jordi: Tied for the best areas if you are a beach-loving couple just looking to zen out and relax. Santanyi is quieter, offering easy access to beautiful beaches like Es Trenc and Cala Llombards.

Colonia De Sant Jordi is also close to beautiful beaches, although slightly less connected. However, there is more to do than in Santanyi!

3. Soller/Port Soller: Ideal for exploring quaint villages and soaking in natural beauty, Soller and its port offer a relaxed vibe with great dining options.

4. Valldemossa: Valldemossa’s dreamy streets and cozy restaurants make it a top choice for couples seeking romance.

How to Get Around Mallorca

There are SO many ways to get around Mallorca! Here are the best ways that Caleb and I found after visiting the island ourselves!

  • Your Feet: Walking is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. Just remember, venturing beyond the city limits might require renting a car if you don’t like public transport.
  • Public Bus: A budget-friendly option that connects you to major towns and attractions. You can get around quickly with two primary bus services, EMT for city routes and TIB for island-wide travel.
  • Taxi: Quick and convenient for getting between cities or late-night returns. They can be expensive, though!
  • City Sightseeing Tourist Bus: A hop-on, hop-off service that’s great for first-timers wanting to hit all the major landmarks without the hassle of navigation.
  • Train: While touristy, the antique train from Palma to Soller is SUPER beautiful and one of the most romantic things to do in Mallorca! Oh, la la!
  • Car: we LOVED having a car in Mallorca because it allows you total freedom. You don’t have to organize your timetable around bus schedules; it allows you to get to outside areas of the island quickly.

If you do some research, Google will say there is Uber in Mallorca. However, we found only a couple of cars on the WHOLE island, so we had to wait ages, and most of the time, the Uber never came.

So, we don’t recommend planning on using Uber as a method of transportation, especially outside of Palma.

Best Places to Visit in Mallorca

Here are all of me and Caleb’s favorite spots in Mallorca that you should add to your itinerary:

  • Palma : The capital has excellent shopping in the old town, restaurants, beaches, and a beautiful cathedral.
  • Banyalbufar : On the west coast, this less-visited town has breathtaking views of terraced hillsides leading to the sea.
  • Santanyi: A bohemian village, close to gorgeous beaches, that lives up on market days.
  • Alcúdia: A blend of ancient history and beach resort surrounded by medieval walls.
  • Valldemossa: A town with storybook vibes in the mountains, famous for its stone houses and Carthusian Monastery. Visiting is a very romantic way to spend the afternoon!
  • Deiá: A hilltop village beloved by artists, offering stunning views and a lot of romance!
  • Sóller & Port of Sóller: Known for its citrus and scenic beauty, with an antique train connecting the two.
  • Fornalutx: Dubbed Spain’s prettiest village, it overlooks the Sóller valley.
  • Port de Pollenca : A quaint town in the north known for its clear waters and eateries.

Attractions

  • Castell De Bellver: A Gothic castle with panoramic views, accessible by car or the Hop On, Hop Off Sightseeing Bus for convenience.
  • Palma Cathedral : “La Seu” is a beautiful, gothic cathedral with a massive rose window and Gaudí’s touches.

Pro tip: the best photo spot to get the entire church is on the stone ledge across the lagoon.

  • Drach Caves – 4 interconnected caves with an underground lake. Very touristy but pretty cool.
  • Cala Santanyi : A serene beach in a cove, known for its clear blue waters.
  • Cala Figuera: A picturesque fishing village with charming white houses.
  • Cala Deia – a beautiful, secluded cove with crystal water and lots of boulders to chill on.
  • Cala Llombards: A unique shade of blue water, sandy shores, and super charming little boathouses.
  • Cala Pi: A long, narrow beach that can get crowded, turning its usually clear waters a bit cloudy. Still beautiful, though!
  • Calo des Moro : A breathtaking inlet with crystal-clear waters and a small beach with rock boulders for sunbathing.
  • Es Trenc: One of the most famous beaches! It has a long stretch of sandy beach offering a break from the rocky calas, with vibrant blue waters but no facilities. It’s very secluded and romantic!
  • Sa Calobra: Accessible via Mallorca’s curviest (and scariest!) road, with clear waters trapped between two cliffs

Romantic Viewpoints (sunset recommended!)

  • Cap de Formentor with lighthouse: Offers breathtaking views at Mallorca’s northern tip.
  • Mirador es Colomer: A lookout offering panoramic views on the way to Cap de Formentor.
  • Mirador Sa Foradada: A popular sunset spot near Deiá. Just make sure you arrive early if you visit. We made that mistake and had to stand behind tall people, which wasn’t the view I hoped for.
  • Mirador Es Pontás: A prime sunset viewing spot with a natural rock arch.

Best Things to Do

  • Catamaran Tour with Tapas – This was the highlight of our trip! Imagine spending a super relaxing day on a boat with snacks and WINE and swimming in warm blue water. Best of all, you didn’t have to organize any of it! Simply show up and be treated to exclusive areas of the island with breathtaking views you can’t see anywhere else!

Booking in advance is highly recommended, as this one books up FAST.

>> Click to check prices, availability, and reviews! <<

2. Cooking Class – We LOVED learning how to make Paella! Skip having to make restaurant reservations, worry about if you don’t get in, or risk eating at a not-so-great spot. This cooking class is easy and fun, comes with snacks and lots of wine, and the Paella is excellent!

3. Romantic Sunrise Balloon Tour – Honestly, you won’t get views like this anywhere else on the island – on a clear day, you can see the other Balearic islands! This is it if you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime bucket list experience. And it’s SO romantic.

4. Sailing and SUP Adventure – You’ll get exclusive access to private coves away from the party boats that are perfect for snorkeling or SUPing. Relax with wine and tapas on the boat when you’re not on the water. Snorkeling gear is provided too, so no stress there!

5. Private Food Tour – Save yourself the stress of figuring out where to eat all the best things and fit it all into your schedule. You’ll get 10 tastings of the best traditional food and exclusive access to local eateries.

Weather in Mallorca

Mallorca has a Mediterranean climate , with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.

Summer months, from June to August , see average temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F)

Spring ( March to May) and autumn (September to November ) are in the middle, with averages between 15°C and 25°C (59°F to 77°F.) This is when Caleb and I love to visit!

Winters are mild , with temperatures rarely dropping below 10°C (50°F), although this is when the island is the rainiest!

What to eat

It wouldn’t be a Mallorca Spain travel guide without where to eat! Mallorca has some EPIC traditional food , which we did not expect. Caleb and I were (happily) surprised that the food was much different than in the tapas bars we love in Madrid and was very unique.

You must try:

  • Coca de Trampo: A light, crispy bread topped with the freshest tomatoes, green peppers, and onions. It’s stupid simple and stupidly delicious. You’ll find this in almost any bakery!
  • Pa Amb Oli: Made with local brown bread, ideally toasted, rubbed with garlic, and topped with a special type of tomato called “ramallet.” Another stupid-simple-stupid-delicious item you’ll find everywhere.
  • Sobrassada : This is one of our faves in all of Spain. Think spreadable chorizo that is rich, spicy, and freaking fantastic.
  • Tumbet: Mallorca’s version of ratatouille with Eggplants, potatoes, red peppers, and a rich tomato sauce.
  • Ensaimada: Last but certainly not least, the Ensaimada is the most famous of Mallorcan pastries. It’s made with pork lard, but we promise it doesn’t taste like pork. It’s SO light, airy, and just sweet enough with various filling options!

We loved the Ensaimada at Panadería S’ Estació in Palma.

Mallorca is generally safe to travel, especially as a couple. You have the whole “safety in numbers” thing that solo travelers don’t have!

However, like ALL big cities, keep your wits about you. Don’t do dumb things like wander down dark, secluded alleys at night (especially after some Spanish wine!) or wear expensive jewelry around. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially at the beach, Magaluf, and Palma Nova, where pickpocketing is common.

Caleb always wears a money belt (although he complains about it), and I love my travelon anti-theft purse.

Entry and Exit Requirements

Coming from the USA, you’ll need a valid passport for 3 months from departure, ideally 6 months.

You also can’t stay longer than 3 months without a special visa.

Travel Tips To Know Before You Go

  • Best months to visit: Caleb and I like May , September , or October because it’s hot but not crazy busy yet. If you want the HOTTEST weather, go in June or July. Just know it’ll be packed with other humans!
  • Language: The main language is Spanish, and the local dialect is Mallorquin. However, you’ll get around with English just fine in the tourist areas.
  • Currency: Mallorca uses the Euro.
  • When looking for beaches, look for “Calas,” as that is what beaches are called in Mallorca.

Is Mallorca Worth Visiting?

Yes, Mallorca is worth visiting! It has beautiful beaches, amazing food, gorgeous sunsets, and many pretty towns to explore. It makes an epic vacation spot!

How Many Days in Mallorca?

You should spend at least 5 days in Mallorca but, if you want to see it all, we recommend spending one week.

Is Mallorca Cheap or Expensive?

Compared to the rest of Spain, Mallorca is a little on the expensive side. However, compared to other big European cities, Mallorca is very affordable!

Which Is The Most Beautiful Part of Mallorca?

The most beautiful part of Mallorca is the Tramuntana Mountains, with towns like Deia, Soller, Valldemossa, and Fornalutx.

Let’s Wrap This Up: The Ultimate Mallorca Travel Guide

There you have it, an entire travel guide to Mallorca with everything you need to know about visiting, from where to stay (we recommend Palma) to when to visit (we think May, September, or October) to the best things to see and do (don’t miss the catamaran tour, because this surprised us to be the favorite part of our own Mallorca vacation!) and everything in between!

Now that you know all the details, the next step is putting it together in a perfect itinerary. We’re here to help and save you time! We’ve made a custom 7-day itinerary for Mallorca that you can easily edit to fit your time frame.

So, when are you planning a Mallorca getaway?

The Best Day Trips from Palma de Mallorca

Explore Cabrera National Park by boat or by hike, or both!

Take a step into the Balearics by visiting the gorgeous city of Palma, Mallorca. This is the largest city in the archipelago; and while the Balearic Islands are more commonly known for their beautiful beaches and nightlife, Palma de Mallorca is a gorgeous city with so much to offer.

Palma Cathedral is otherworldly, and tapas bars and boutique stores line the streets. It’s the perfect historic city for sitting outside and enjoying an ice-cold drink in the afternoon.

But if you’re based in Mallorca’s capital for a trip, you might be interested in some of the best day trips from Palma de Mallorca. While it’s situated in the south of the island, excellent transport links mean that it’s great for day trips to see some of the best of the Mallorcan countryside and engage in authentic Balearic culture.

Soller and Port de Soller

Port De Soller - A perfect day trip from Palma de Mallorca

Port De Soller – A perfect day trip from Palma de Mallorca

This day trip from Palma de Mallorca is extra special because you’re going to use an incredible method of transport to get there!

A historic train from the 1920s links Palma with Soller. This train winds through the Tramuntana Mountains, stopping off on the way to enjoy one of the best vistas on the island.

The journey to Soller aboard the historic train

The journey to Soller aboard the historic train

Eventually, it reaches Soller. This is a small town most famous for its imposing cathedral, which stands out amongst the rows of terraced shops.

From Soller, you can hop in a tram and head to Port de Soller. This is a gorgeous beach destination, which only opened up to tourists in around the 1980s when a tunnel gave it road access. This means that it avoided the mass tourism of the 1960s/ 1970s that you’ll see throughout the rest of Mallorca, and today it has more of a local feel!

Take a walk up to a viewpoint to look out over the scenery, wander the backstreets and enjoy a fresh baguette, or simply sit by the beach and watch the world go by. Port de Soller is quite a sleepy town, but it’s lovely.

Once you’ve finished in Port de Soller, you can take a tram back to Soller and then transfer to a train. The trains operate all throughout the year, so it’s a great day trip even if you’re visiting Mallorca in winter !

Pollenca is a beautiful town situated in the north of the island. Basking in centuries of history, Pollenca is an ancient town with a history of being conquered frequently throughout its past.

You can take in all of the city’s best sights by walking around, enjoying places like the “Pont Roma”, which is a Roman Bridge on the outskirts of town.

Don’t miss the Placa Mayor and the 18th-century church too!

There’s also an immense viewpoint over the island at El Calvari, which is set up 365 steps and is lined by cypresses on either side. As you go up, you can take in impressive views of the island, each a little better than the last – which will give you the motivation to hike the whole way to the top! From the summit, enjoy views spanning to Port de Pollenca.

Port de Pollenca is also worth visiting as a day trip from Palma de Mallorca. Ideal in the summer months, it’s a blue flag beach with looming views of the Mallorcan mountains in the background. The white sand beaches are incredibly inviting on a hot summer’s day when you’ve been road-tripping all over the island!

A view of Valldemossa from the Miranda dels Lledoners

A view of Valldemossa from the Miranda dels Lledoners

Serene Valdemossa is so close to Palma, it’s hard to call it a day trip – but you’ll feel world’s away as you drive to this village in the Traumatana Mountains!

The highest town in Mallorca, Valdemossa is located on a hilltop, with surrounding views of vineyards.

Attractions include the Real Cartuja, otherwise known as the Royal Carthusian Monastery, where you can find cloisters, a beautiful church, and King Sancho’s Palace which was gifted to Carthusian Monks.

The Chopin Museum is a great spot to visit to discover the village’s history, plus there are wonderful walks in the surrounding countryside.

Valdemossa also has great importance amongst Mallorcans. It’s the birthplace of the only Mallorcan saint, Santa Catalina Thomas!

Sa Dragonera Island

The distinctive shape of Dragonera off the coast of Mallorca

Sa Dragonera Island is a tiny island just off the coast of Mallorca.

It’s easy to visit on a boat day trip from Palma; here, you’ll learn about the fascinating history of the island including its history of being a pirate’s residence, see wildlife like the native lizards and take in glorious walks such as the local lighthouse.

It’s the perfect day trip from Palma de Mallorca for the summer months!

Cabrera National Park

Explore Cabrera National Park by boat or by hike, or both!

The Cabrera Islands are a small archipelago just off the coast of Mallorca. You can enjoy them by taking a boat trip to the Cabrera National Park ; hike around the island and take in the immense Mediterranean views and white-sand beaches.

It’s the largest national park reserve in Spain, so there’s so much to see here, including the Blue Cave which is renowned for its incredible colour effects, and the Castle of Cabrera.

Nowadays, the islands are uninhabited, but they have a fascinating history spanning centuries, and you’ll learn all about them on the guided tour of Cabrera National Park!

Hike Puig de Massanella

The rolling peaks of Puig de Massanella

The rolling peaks of Puig de Massanella

Puig de Massanella is the highest hikeable peak in Mallorca (Puig Major is the highest, but it’s a military area that tourists can’t access). From the summit, you’ll see a surreal view of the island!

The total hiking distance (there and back) is about 12km, and you’ll gain 700 metres. You’ll feel on top of the world – or at least on top of the island – when you summit it, and as long as you go on a clear day, you should be able to enjoy some of the best views in the Balearics!

This hike is doable in a day, but it’s not easy – you’ll need a good level of fitness and some orienteering experience. You can start the hike from a trailhead by Restaurant Ca’n Gallet which is an hour’s drive from Palma, making it a perfect day trip. Public transport can be a bit tricky in this area, but you could take the T1/ T2/ T3 bus to Inca and transfer to the 312, which takes about an hour and 20 minutes.

If you’re visiting Mallorca with children, Aqualand is a must! Located in S’Arenal, this water park boasts something for all ages, with high-adrenaline rides like the whirlpool ride “tornado”, rapids and the flume “the devil’s tail” for adults and teens and more relaxed, smaller slides for children! There are also plenty of pools to splash about and relax in.

This is one of the best day trips from Palma de Mallorca because it’s so easy to access! Reach it on the number 23 bus which connects with the capital. Adult tickets are only 30,00€ if you buy them in advance!

Visit the wineries

Sample delicious local wines during a day trip from Palma de Mallorca

Sample delicious local wines during a day trip from Palma de Mallorca

Have you ever had Mallorcan wine? While varieties from mainland Spain are more famous, there are lots of wineries throughout the Balearic island as well. One of the best day trips that you can do in Mallorca is to see as many as possible!

  • One of the best is Vins Nadal Winery in Binissalem. It’s an indoor winery with the option to go out and explore the vineyards, and you can sample some reds, whites and rose wines, try some Mallorcan snacks and see the wine cellars.
  • Alternatively, visit Can Ribas . This winery has a long history spanning all the way back to 1776. You’ll be able to enjoy a historic courtyard as you sample some of their delectable wines, with packages available for all budgets.
  • Or, head to Bodegas Angel . This winery is close to Palma, but you’ll feel as if you’re in the heart of nature as you sip on red, white and rose wines while looking at the Tramuntana Mountain view!

You can make your own wine tour by choosing a few of the best Mallorca wineries and organizing transport in between them.

However, you can also do a wine tour from Palma and take in some of the best vineyards on the island!

Visit vibrant Ibiza as a day trip from Palma de Mallorca

Visit vibrant Ibiza as a day trip from Palma de Mallorca

With useful boat and flight links, you can actually take a day trip from Mallorca all the way to Ibiza!

Ibiza is known for its nightlife and superclubs, but it’s actually a gorgeous island with lots of hidden coves and spectacular viewpoints.

Visit Ibiza town and smaller villages like San Juan, or simply road trip around all of the best beaches, like Cala Carbó or local favourite Pou des Lleó.

To make the most of a day trip to Ibiza, I’d recommend either taking your car on the boat, or flying over and renting a car when you’re there. Boats take about two hours and leave from Palma.

Visit Menorca - the smallest of the Ballearics, yet full of coves and beaches

Visit Menorca – the smallest of the Balearics, yet full of coves and beaches

The smallest of all the Balearic Islands, Menorca is a great day trip from Palma de Mallorca.

You’ll need to either fly or drive to Alcúdia (around 45 minutes from Palma) and take the ferry (which is 2.5 hours). While Menorca is the smallest main Balearic Island, it actually has the same number of beaches as Ibiza and Mallorca combined!

Dive in the perfectly blue waters of Cala Macarelleta or go snorkelling off Cala Pregonda. Road tripping around Menorca is an absolute dream, but thanks to its small size, it’s very feasible to do in a day.

Again, it’s best to have a car here – you can either take yours with you (if you take the boat) or hire a car from the airport.

How to take these day trips from Palma de Mallorca

Most people fly into Mallorca. If you do, you can rent a car from the airport. It’s probably the easiest way to see these incredible day trip locations, and the roads around Mallorca are fairly easy to drive on.

If you can’t drive or don’t want to rent a car, many of these Palma de Mallorca day trips are connected by bus or rail (in the case of Soller and Port de Soller!). There are also plenty of organized tours leaving from the capital, most of which are bookable on Get Your Guide .

These day trips from Palma de Mallorca are incredible ways to see more of the island – and all of the Balearics! By basing yourself in Palma, you’ll be able to access plenty of amenities, but you’re also in an excellent position to see the rest of the island. Mallorca is a dream destination for many, and this guide will help you make the most of your trip there!

I loved Mallorca when I visited. I did a day tour around the island. I didn’t realise there were so many other day trips I could have done – particularly to the other islands. Thanks for the inspiration for my next trip.

How to get out of Palma de Mallorca

The easiest and most convenient way to travel from Palma to nearby towns and villages is by renting a car. Car hires are available from the city airport and in most resorts. But if you’re traveling alone or with another person, cycling is a common way to explore the island. You can take photos and stop at places, giving you maximum freedom and convenience.

If you prefer public transportation, trains stop at towns like Binissalem and Santa Maria. On the other hand, buses serve nearly all villages and towns, though services are limited in remote areas. The main bus station is adjacent to the Plaza España train station. You can also take advantage of a boat trip, half-day tour, or a sightseeing cruise from major resorts around Mallorca.

From Palma de Mallorca to Cabrera Maritime-Terrestrial National Park

The Cabrera Archipelago, about an hour by boat from Mallorca island, is full of surprises. Its almost untouched coastline is home to a wealth of species that can only be found in the Balearic Islands. Cabrera Archipelago’s highlight is the Maritime-Terrestrial National Park, with a protected area spanning 90,794 hectares.

The island of Cabrera has been uninhabited since 1991 and was declared a Maritime Terrestrial National Park in the same year. Today, over 400 botanical species call it home, and 200 types of fish, marine birds, crustaceans, mollusks, reptiles, raptors, and other terrestrial mammals.

Apart from the life flowing through the archipelago in water and on the coast, the beaches here offer astounding tranquility. You will be surrounded by nature, steep cliffs, and crystalline waters. The National Park Visitors Centre is worth checking out, which features an impressive mural and an aquarium. It is open from 10 AM to 2 PM and from 3 PM to 6 PM.

How to get to Cabrera Maritime-Terrestrial National Park

A boat trip is the best way to get to Cabrera Maritime-Terrestrial National Park . Boats leave from Colonia de Sant Jordi in Ses Salines, south of Mallorca. The boat ride to the island is about thirty-five minutes, offering a nature escape from Palma’s busy lifestyle.

From Palma de Mallorca to Castell d'Alaró

Perched at the top of Puig de Alaró is the spectacular Castell d'Alaró. It is one of the rocky castles in Mallorca, along with Castell de Santueri in Felanitx and Castell del Rei in Pollenca. It’s a stone castle ruin strategically placed atop the mountain peak to serve as a fortress for people taking refuge during the war.

Castell d'Alaró stands 822 meters and is a famous hike from the town. Besides its historical relevance as a fortified military building on the mountaintop, it’s an excellent vantage point to admire the views of the landscape of the Tramuntana mountain range.

How to get to Castell d'Alaró

Getting a taxi or driving is the best and quickest way to get to Alaro from Palma, which takes less than half an hour. For public transport, a train is your next best option. Trains depart from Estació Intermodal in Palma to Alaro, with services departing every hour. The train ride takes a little over an hour.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, Serra de Tramuntana is a famous hiking spot. The most renowned routes are La Ruta de Piedra, Puig des Teix, and Ermita de Maristella y Fita del Ram. If you don’t want to hike the Tramuntana mountains, you can take a tour using a train or bike. Take this chance to visit the towns in Serra de Tramuntana, including the Valldemossa, Deià, Sóller, Fornalutx, and Pollença.

How to get to Serra de Tramuntana

Serra de Tramuntana is a famous spot for day trips from Palma de Mallorca, as it’s only less than 30km away. Driving or riding a taxi to the location will take only about 30 minutes. From Palma de Mallorca to Sóller

Sóller is one of the most stunning towns, not only in Majorca but in the whole of Spain. It’s known for the architecture of its buildings, houses, and shops, inspired by Majorcan and French palace styles. Strolling through the streets of Sóller will give you an experience unlike any other in the country.

Besides its architecture, what makes Sóller a recommended stop for Palma de Mallorca day trips is its citrus groves. In fact, the town is known as the ‘Valley of Oranges’ for the relevance of the fruit in the town’s past and present. Therefore, while in Sóller, visit the 18,000 sq m Vinyassa orchard.

Other attractions in this charming town include the Plaza de la Constitución, the Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences, and Jardí Botànic. It also has many shops, restaurants, and Saturday markets.

How to get to Sóller

If you’re driving from Palma de Mallorca, follow the C711 road to Sóller. You can also take the bus from Arxiduc Lluís Salvador, 4, then pass by either through the tunnel or the towns of Deià and Valldemossa. However, if you want a more memorable journey, take the old wooden train from the center of Palma de Mallorca. It will pass by a scenic route through the mountains, then to Sóller.

From Palma de Mallorca to Alcúdia

Another picturesque historic town in Majorca is Alcúdia , northeast of Palma de Mallorca. It’s characterized by its old-fashioned walls, narrow streets, medieval mansions, and warm-stone houses. This vibrant town is ideal for Palma de Mallorca day trips and has some of the most stylish terraces, backyards, and patios you’ll ever see.

Other attractions in Alcúdia include the Pollèntia ruins, Museu Monogràfic de Pollèntia, Museo Sa Bassa Blanca, and Porta del Moll. You should also see its famous buildings, such as the Ca’n Canta, Ca’n Fondo, Ca’n Domènech, and Ca’n Torró. The town also provides a unique experience with its open-air concerts and theatre functions for medieval music. It’s highly recommended for those on Palma de Mallorca day trips.

How to get to Alcúdia

Alcúdia is a 45-minute drive from Palma de Mallorca if you're driving. Several parking spaces near the town are free of charge. If you’re going by public transport, go to the Plaza España in Palma, then take the A1 bus. Afterward, go to the intermodal station, take the 351 bus towards Platja de Muro, and stop at Alcúdia.

From Palma de Mallorca to Drach Caves

On the east of Palma de Mallorca, you can find the Drach Caves or Cuevas del Drach in the town of Porto Cristo. It’s 1,200m long and up to 25m deep. It’s also here that you can find Lake Martel, famously known as one of the largest underwater lakes worldwide. The caves were first explored in 1880, and it has been a famous tourist spot for Palma de Mallorca day trips after decades have passed.

Drach Caves is a famous attraction open for visitors from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on March 14 to October 31 and from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM on November 1 to March 13. Guided tours last one hour, including exploring the caves, live concerts, and crossing Lake Martel by boat or on foot. Babies up to two years old are free of charge, while online tickets for children from three to 12 are $10 and adults for $17.

How to get to Drach Caves

Drive 70km east for about an hour to get to Drach Caves on the east coast from Palma. If you’re going by public transport, take the 401 bus at Estació Intermodal and stop when you reach the location. This takes 30 minutes longer but is cheaper than driving or catching a taxi to the site.

From Palma de Mallorca to Santa Maria del Cami

Another easy day trip from Palma is the beautiful town of Santa María del Camí. It is nestled at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains at the center of the island, about fourteen kilometers from the city center. It’s close to the bustling capital but has a small-town atmosphere. It gives a taste of the quiet countryside life but with city conveniences just within easy reach.

Most people visit Santa Maria del Cami as part of a wine-tasting experience or wine tour, as it’s located in the Bennissalem area, the island’s largest wine region. The town is nestled among vineyards and boasts several wineries, gorgeous terrain with breathtaking views, cycling and hiking trails, and delicious local wines. So if you’re here for a quick day trip from Palma, stop by one of the restaurants or eateries for a delicious lunch paired with a glass of wine.

How to get to Santa Maria del Cami

If you don’t plan to join a wine tour, driving to Santa Maria del Cami will only take twenty minutes to half an hour, depending on the traffic. Train services also run from Palma’s Estació Intermodal to Santa Maria del Cami several times per hour. Such trains will connect you from the town to other important areas like Inca, Manacor, and Sa Pobla.

best day trips mallorca

From Palma to Algaida

Situated southwest of the island’s central area is an old country town called Algaida. It is about 16.3 miles (26.3 km) from Palma, with glorious mountains and flat countryside. It’s a popular spot among active holidaymakers, curious travelers, and those who want to experience an authentic Mallorcan experience a short distance from the capital.

In the southern part of the town, you’ll reach Santuari de Cura. It is one of the island’s most renowned monasteries and sanctuaries. It is now a restaurant and hotel where you can watch the breathtaking sunrise over Palma bay or dine with a view. Other attractions at Algaida include a 1738 Moli d’en Xina mill and the Gordiola Glass Factory and Museum, one of Mallorca’s oldest glass factories.

How to get to Algaida

Algaida is a short drive from Palma, so you can either rent a car to get there or rent a taxi. For public transportation, the best way to get there is by taking a bus, which takes about half an hour.

Enjoy Local Palma de Mallorca Day Trips!

While visiting Palma will fill your days with endless adventures, events, and activities, a day trip outside the city center is still worth considering. Palma de Mallorca makes an excellent base to see more of the island and delve deeper into the unique Balearic culture, tradition, and lifestyle. No matter what time of the year you visit, you’ll never run out of things to enjoy beyond the island’s capital.
