How To Visit 10+ Countries While Studying Abroad In Europe

Table of Contents

So, you clicked on this post because you’re studying abroad in Europe. Or maybe you’re just curious how students manage to travel to 10+ countries in only 4 months? Or maybe you just like reading my blog? Regardless, thank you so much for taking the time to visit my little corner of the internet! I hope this post is insightful for you and answers the questions we often ask ourselves every time we see photos of study abroad students in new countries each weekend…. how do they do it ? Keep reading to find out how I managed to travel to 16 countries in only 16 weeks, and how you can too!

How To Afford Travel While Studying Abroad

Let’s talk money. If it wasn’t already obvious, studying abroad, and travel in general, is very expensive. Most universities partner with schools overseas so that your tuition and credits carry over, meaning you will pay the same amount for a semester abroad as you normally would on campus. This fee often includes your temporary housing, so more often than not, you won’t have to worry about rent. You also shouldn’t really need any school supplies. Since most programs are in cities, it’s not practical for students to be required to carry books to every class, so your courses will most likely require a lot of online work. Additionally, most universities provide their students with some form of travel / medical insurance so this should be all set too.

What Costs Do I Need To Budget For?

This leaves you with the following financial responsibilities: food, transportation, travel fees (hotels, hostels, flights, etc.), an international phone plan, spending money for shopping (you WILL buy a new wardrobe abroad), and maybe an emergency fund in case you have an unexpected medical expense.

Food in Paris while studying abroad in Europe

The cost of food ends up being quite expensive while studying abroad in Europe assuming you will eat out a lot. And since you’re living in Europe, I recommend that you do! Most universities overseas won’t have a dining hall, so you will be on your own for food. I went to the grocery store weekly to buy food to cook myself for dinner and did eat out often, especially when I traveled on the weekends. In all, I spent about $3,000 on food throughout the 4 months. I’m grateful I was provided with the equivalent of one semester’s dining plan at my home university, but I did save up a lot to use for when I ate out.

For the international phone plan, I recommend buying a sim card once you arrive in your host country as this will be much cheaper than paying per day for international phone use. I used Vodafone . Also, the app “WhatsApp” is going to become your new best friend (P.S. – It’s free!).

Travel Expenses / Spending Money

With these costs aside, I had about $6,000 saved up for travel expenses and spending money. I studied abroad in Florence, Italy during Fall 2017 and am fortunate that I had an entire summer right before I left to work my butt off. I worked at a spa /salon and served at weddings. The businesses were right next to each other so I would often work both jobs in one day, working at the spa from 9 – 5 pm and then working a wedding from 6 pm – 1am. Even though I was exhausted this summer, I was so glad I worked hard because I was able to see so much while studying abroad in Europe with my savings!

How Much Should I Save?

I highly recommend saving up as much as you can. If you want to see 10+ countries in Europe, plus enjoy the nightlife and attractions in your host city, I would have around $5,000 to spend.

How To Plan International Trips While Studying Abroad In Europe

How is it possible to travel to a new country pretty much every week while maintaining good grades as a full-time student AND making the most of your host city AND sleeping / staying healthy? Here are my tips:

Plan Ahead Of Time!

Your study abroad experience will fly by. When we first arrived in Europe, most of my friends were so caught up in adjusting to life in Florence that they didn’t travel for the first 2-3 weekends. This left them with only 12-13 weeks to travel instead of 16. If you’re studying abroad in Europe with close friends or people you’re comfortable traveling with, I recommend booking trips for your first 2-3 weekends BEFORE you begin. I studied in Florence with my good friend Mairin so we booked a trip to Greece for our second weekend abroad (leave the first to adapt to your new home) and a trip to Prague, Czech Republic and Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany for our third weekend abroad. This plan guaranteed that we would see Italy, Greece, Czech Republic, and Germany in our first month abroad! Not bad!

Studying abroad in Europe

Plan All Trips During Your First Few Weeks Abroad

Spend your first few weeks studying abroad in Europe planning travel for the rest of your semester. While you’re adjusting to your classes and exploring your own city within the first 1-2 weeks, I highly recommend using this time to also book trips! Ideally you will already have the first 1-2 planned, but take a look at your class schedule and plan ahead. We sat down as a group and booked something for almost every single weekend leading up to fall break (mid-October) within the first week or two abroad. We planned fall break later on since this was a bigger trip, while simultaneously filling our weekends post-break with trip plans. By the time mid-October rolled around, I had already traveled to 6 countries and had plans to travel to another 10 countries throughout the remainder of my semester.

I do NOT recommend booking weekend trips as they roll around during the week. This will be very overwhelming and expensive, as you will be cutting it close to your departure date. Booking them ahead of time made me feel more organized as I could envision my upcoming plans and schedule in time to see more of Italy, ensuring that I saw everything I wanted to.

How Do I Book Trips?

Now, you may be wondering HOW to book trips cost-effectively and easily. There are two methods almost all study abroad students utilize…

Method #1: Booking Trips On Your Own

Transportation.

Always start with getting there. There are several budget airlines that fly throughout major European cities: RyanAir , EasyJet , Vueling , and Norwegian are the main ones. Although offering the bare minimum, these planes will get you from point A to point B safely and for as little as $10 USD!

Pro-tip: Budget airlines tend to have more expensive baggage fees in an effort to profit more, so watch out for these. Your bag needs to be a certain size to be considered a carry-on (check airline websites for more info) and will most likely be weighed before each flight.

Once your flights are booked, you’ll need to pay for transportation to the airport. Ubers aren’t in every European country, so get familiar with taxis and the trains. Trains in Europe are fantastic, and although most are more expensive than flights, you may want to look into a EuroRail pass if you plan on traveling frequently.

Accommodation: Airbnb

I recommend staying in hostels or Airbnbs throughout Europe. Hotels are overpriced and offer the same amenities as most modern hostels. If you’re staying with a large group of friends you could all split an Airbnb.

Pro -tip: When booking an Airbnb, be sure to pay close attention to its location. You do NOT want to get stuck with paying for taxis everytime you want to visit a site. I always look at a city’s major attractions and map the walking distance from the attraction to my accommodation before I book it. For example, if you’re staying in Paris, look up the distance from your Airbnb to the Eiffel Tower. If it’s more than 2 miles away and you aren’t set on taking public transportation, I would reconsider your accommodation’s location.

Accommodation: Hostels

I’m a big fan of hostels because they often offer free walking tours, extra amenities, and are a great place to meet other travelers! Hostel rooms can be booked by gender and range from more expensive private rooms (basically a hotel room) to $10/night shared dorms with 16 other people! Book what you’re comfortable with and ALWAYS read reviews, but I promise there are incredible and affordable hostels all throughout Europe.

Pro-tip: Interested in booking a hostel? Use websites such as HostelWorld.com to search for them by location, amenities, etc. I always stay in hostels with free WiFi, A/C, included breakfast, and within close proximity to a city’s center.

Attractions

When planning your own trip, be sure to buy tickets to famous attractions online and in advance! Before planning our own trip to Paris , my study abroad friends and I booked tickets to Versailles, the Catacombs, the Louvre, and more. For other attractions, such as the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, we just showed up and were able to score a discounted entry by showing our student IDs!

Pro-tip: Always bring your home university’s student ID with you when traveling and test your luck with student discounts!

Studying abroad in Europe

Method #2: Booking Trips With Student Travel Companies

The other popular option that most study abroad students utilize to see Europe are student travel companies! Companies like SmartTrip and Bus2Alps operate weekend and fall / spring break tours all throughout Europe. Each weekend trip is roughly $300 USD and include: transportation from your host city to the destination via overnight coach bus, shared hostel accommodation, city walking tour, nightlife options /organized bar crawls, optional activities, and more. My friends and I really liked utilizing these companies because they took care of everything! With one simple online payment, our transportation, accommodation, and sightseeing was booked.

You may have heard of these companies from previous study abroad students, but if you’re unfamiliar – don’t worry, you will see advertising throughout Europe and probably meet the guides at bars and restaurants in cities. Especially in countries such as Spain and Italy, the guides utilize guerilla marketing to spread the word and will approach you with brochures about their trips. During our first week abroad, we were given a Bus2Alps brochure with a guide’s discount code on it and used her code to book almost all of our trips for the semester. It was a seamless process and not too expensive.

Pr o-tip: These companies only operate out of some major European cities. You can bus with them from Florence, Rome, Barcelona, and Prague. If you’re studying abroad in other cities, like London, they have a “meet us there” option where you pay for your own flights and meet up with the tour once you’ve arrived. I did this when I flew from Florence to Marrakech, Morocco for a long-weekend!

How To Manage Your Time Abroad & Balance It All

Almost every European university has classes off on Fridays. This means you have a 3-day weekend every weekend. I got lucky during my semester and had Mondays off as well, giving me plenty of time to travel on weekends and plenty of time to sleep and focus on classes during the week.

Depart On Thursday Nights, Not Friday

Unless these guided trips take place over a break, most depart on a Thursday night and return on a Sunday evening. You will spend Thursday night on a coach bus (bring a pillow and some Benadryl, it’s not that bad), and arrive in your destination on Friday morning. You will then have all day Friday, Saturday, and some of Sunday to explore, and will spend Friday and Saturday nights in hostels. If you choose to plan your own trip, I also recommend departing on a Thursday night to make the most of your weekend.

Make The Most Of Your Fall / Spring Break

If your goal is to country hop , definitely make the most of your mid-October or mid-March break! Beginning on a Thursday night and lasting until the following Sunday evening, you will have 10 days to explore. I recommend visiting several countries during this time. The companies I mentioned above offer 10-day tours that will take you to many of Europe’s hot spots. My friends and I planned our own and visited Amsterdam (3 nights), Brussels (1 night), Paris (3 nights), and Barcelona (3 nights).

Visiting Barcelona while studying abroad in Europe

Make The Most Of Weekdays To Explore Your Host Country

If you plan on traveling internationally almost every weekend, you need to make sure to leave enough time during the week to explore your host city. Besides classes (which only last for a few hours a day), I recommend going out to eat, visiting local galleries, museums, shops, and bars during the week. Also, be sure to catch up on sleep as the weekends can be very tiring!

Additionally, your abroad program may have field trips scheduled. For example, in late September /early October we had two weekends back to back of required trips. Since Florence is a fairly small city and we already saw the highlights, we wanted to make the most of these weekends and visit other cities in Italy .

Studying abroad in Europe

Examples Of Host Country Weekend Trips

09/20/2017: Classes today. Spent the evening going out to dinner in Florence and the night at our favorite bar!

09/21/2017: Took early train from Florence to Milan for Fashion Week! Saw Milan’s Duomo, local fashion shows, parks, and shopped. Ate an early dinner in Milan and returned to Florence at night.

09/22/2017: Took train to Verona, Italy – home of Romeo & Juliet! Spent morning at quaint cafe and visited Casa di Guiletta. Wrote letters to Juliet and took photos on famous balcony. Got gelato in Verona’s main square and relaxed. Took train back to Florence.

09/23/2017: Full day field trip to Arezzo, Italy for Art History! Did HW at night in apartment.

09/28/2017: Classes again today. Tonight we signed up for an Italian cooking class offered by our university! Spent the night cooking in Florence.

09/29/2017: Took train from Florence to Pisa, Italy! Spent only 4 hours here – took photos of Leaning Tower, climbed Leaning Tower, ate pizza and gelato. Took train back in afternoon. Went out in Florence tonight!

09/30/2017: Full day field trip to Siena, Italy for Art History!

10/01/2017: Full day field trip to Montalcino and Pienza, Italy for Art History!

Studying abroad in Italy

As you can see, we really made the most of our weekends. Although they were tiring, this is the only way I was able to see so much. Besides counting the countries I visited, I also counted cities. I visited over 50 of them! During the two weekends I described above I visited 8. Make the most of your time and it’s possible!

As impressive as visiting 10+ European countries is, it is so important to immerse yourself into your host city and explore your country. Especially in countries such as England, Italy, and Spain, there is so much to see! I highly recommend striking a balance between international and domestic travel while abroad. Between various weekend trips throughout Italy and showing my loved ones around Florence when they visited, I felt like I was able to see everything I wanted to in Italy and Florence, while also visiting much of Europe!

Don’t Overdo It…

Studying abroad in Europe is exhausting . As incredible as travel is, it definitely takes a toll on your body. Try to sleep as much as you can and take care of yourself. You’re bound to get sick abroad and if you do, it’s okay. You’ll bounce back. Listen to your body and take a day or two off if needed.

Save your first and last weekends abroad for your host city, and try to slow down when possible. Spend mornings before classes in coffee shops, take leisurely walks through local neighborhoods, lay out at a beach. Since your weekends will be very go go go , try to refuel during the week.

Well, those are my tips for studying abroad in Europe! To sum up: Save, budget, plan, balance, and enjoy! Most semesters abroad are the highlights of students’ college experiences, and is sure to be one of the best times in your life. When else can you live in a foreign country for 4 months and travel the world?? Take advantage of it, but also, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Everyone’s experience is their own. My biggest tip is to be selfish during this time and make the most of your semester, because it really is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

My biggest regret from college was not studying abroad. I was in such a rush to finish a year early, but I wish I would have just stayed a year longer to study abroad! I loved reading about your experience. You managed to squeeze in so much exploring!

You have some really good tips and thoughts for other students wanting to travel while overseas. I couldn’t agree more with planning ahead. Try to pre=plan to avoid the lag time that happens up front.

This was some great advice Nicole! I am going to Paris/London on a study abroad internship and leave next week. My financial aid/scholarships paid for my whole tuition/living expenses, but I am hoping that $7k on top of that will be plenty for nights out, shopping, and traveling on the weekends. I am hoping this will be enough to go to around 10 different countries on weekend trips, but I honestly have no idea how much it will cost. I have been stressing about money, and since I am not able to work for 5 months while I am away, I am hoping I won’t run out

Hi Kayla, this should be plenty! London is one of the most expensive cities in Europe, so you’ll have to budget, but I know people who made $2,000 last 4 months! Try to grocery shop and meal plan for the weeks since you’ll be eating out when you travel on the weekends. I have a guide to Paris on my site you should check out! Have a magical time!!!

Thank you for sharing! Keep doing great work!

Thank you for reading! I plan on it 🙂

When studying abroad in Europe, finding suitable accommodation is integral to the experience.

University Housing

Many universities offer on-campus housing for international students. This is a fantastic alternative if you’re looking to be a part of the student community while still being close to school.

Apartment or flat-sharing

Renting an apartment or flat-sharing with other students is a popular and cost-effective option for many students.

Hostels are a budget-friendly option and a great way to meet other travelers.

Hotels are available in most cities and towns if you prefer a more traditional accommodation option.

Vacation rentals

Websites such as Airbnb or Booking.com provide a wide range of vacation rental options, from apartments to villas.

Short-term rentals

Some websites provide short-term rental options for students, which can be a good choice for those who want to stay for a shorter period.

Student Residences

Some cities offer student residence options, which can vary in terms of services and amenities. It’s important to research and compare the different options to find the one best suits your needs and preferences. Be sure to consider the location, cost, and amenities when making your decision.

Airbnb & Couchsurfing

Airbnb and Couchsurfing are two popular alternative accommodation options for travelers. Airbnb is a website and app that allows people to rent out their homes, apartments, or rooms to travelers.

It’s an excellent option for those who want a more local and authentic experience and a short or extended period. It offers a wide variety of options, from shared rooms to entire homes and from budget-friendly to luxury options.

On the other hand, Couchsurfing is a platform that connects travelers with local hosts willing to offer them a place to stay for free. Learning about the local culture and saving money on accommodation is excellent. However, it’s important to note that Couchsurfing is based on trust, and it’s important to read the reviews and profile of the host before accepting the invitation.

Both Airbnb and Couchsurfing have their benefits. It depends on the type of experience you are looking for, your budget, and your travel style. However, it’s important to note that both platforms have their own terms and conditions, and it’s important to be familiar with them before booking.

Budgeting for Travel

Budgeting for travel is an important part of planning a study abroad trip. Here are some tips for budgeting for travel while studying abroad in Europe. Before you go, research the cost of living in the country or city you visit. This will give you an idea of how much money you will need for basic expenses such as accommodation, food, and transportation. Once you know the cost of living, set a budget for yourself and stick to it.

Compare prices

When booking accommodation, transportation, and activities, compare prices to find the best deals. Use websites such as Kayak, Skyscanner, and Booking.com to compare prices for flights and hotels.

Use public transportation

Europe has an excellent public transportation system, so make use of it to save money on transportation.

Cook your meals

Eating out can be expensive, so consider cooking your meals whenever possible. Take advantage of student discounts: Many museums, tourist attractions, and stores offer student discounts, so be sure to take advantage of them.

Look for free activities

Many cities have free or low-cost activities, such as parks, museums, and cultural events. Research the exchange rate and use credit or debit cards with low foreign transaction fees:

Following these suggestions, you can study in Europe without breaking the bank. But remember, it’s also important to be flexible and have a little extra for unexpected expenses.

In Conclusion

Studying abroad in Europe offers a wide range of experiences, from visiting iconic landmarks and immersing in local culture to outdoor adventures and budget-friendly accommodation options. Therefore, it’s important to research and plan to make the most of your trip, whether you’re looking for historical, cultural, or outdoor experiences.

When budgeting for travel, it is important to research the cost of living in your destination. Then, set a budget and stick to it, compare prices, use public transportation, cook your meals, take advantage of student discounts, look for free activities, and pay attention to the exchange rate and credit card fees.

You may have a wonderful time and create unforgettable experiences while studying in Europe if you prepare ahead of time and stick to a reasonable budget.

11 Weekend Trips to Take While Studying Abroad in Florence

By Jess Dante Feb 13, 2017, 04:28 am 2

Studying abroad in Florence? Awesome— I bet you’re starting to think about planning your weekend trips. There’s so much choice but it’s hard to know what will make a good weekend trip from Florence for study abroad students. So I’ve put together this VERY comprehensive list of great places to visit for a weekend during your study abroad semester in Florence.

*This post contains some affiliate links (this doesn’t affect the price you pay).

Tips for booking weekend trips from Florence

Generally speaking, you want to book your weekend trips as far in advance as you can for cheaper prices. If you have a group of friends who you’ll be studying abroad with that you think you’ll want to travel with too, it might be worth booking your first weekend trip together before you get to Florence, or booking any trips that will get filled up fast, like Oktoberfest and Springfest (more on that later). Be sure to check your program calendar before booking to make sure there’s nothing already planned for you.

Besides that, don’t book any other weekend trips until you get to Florence. There’s a good chance you’ll find new friends that you’d prefer to travel with, or just find out that your US friends aren’t good travel buddies for you. You might also hear about events in Florence that you want to stick around for. Once you find the people you want to travel with and get a handle on your schedule, reference this list, and get booking ASAP!

Pin this so you have it saved for when you’re ready to start planning:

11 great weekend trip ideas when you're studying abroad in Florence. From short train rides to Bologna and Verona, to places in the rest of Europe like Prague and Budapest, these are the best and easiest weekend trips to take while studying in Florence.

Useful tools for booking weekend trips while studying abroad

When booking flights, check StudentUniverse and STA Travel for student prices, and also Skyscanner and Kayak and find the lowest price across those four sites.

When booking trains, use RailEurope. You can pay in USD and can see options that use multiple different train operators.

When booking buses , use GoEuro  and Rome2Rio .

Figuring out the best way to get from Florence to anywhere in Europe, use Rome2Rio.

For easy travel packages with other study abroad students, use Bus2alps . You can use the promo code TheAbroadGuide for a 5% discount. A great option for solo travelers.

For booking apartments, use Airbnb  (that link will give you a $31 discount) and Booking.com.

For booking hostels, use  Booking.com or Hostelworld .

When splitting travel costs between friends, use the app Splitwise .

Ok, now onto the best weekend trips to take while studying abroad in Florence!

Where to go on the weekends when studying abroad in Florence. Bologna makes for a great weekend trip.

For a weekend trip that’s incredibly easy to get to, Bologna is a great option. Located just 35 minutes from Florence if you take the fast train (or about an hour if you opt for the cheaper slow train), this is the place for foodies, as the region is considered the gastronomic center of the country. Bologna is the birthplace of Tagliatelle al Ragu (pasta with bolognese sauce– YUM), but you should also try piadine (flatbread-ish sandwiches), Parmigiano Reggiano, and other local delicacies while you’re there.

Bologna is one of Italy’s biggest university towns, so it’s a great place to meet both Italian students as well as other international ones. Get ready to practice your Italian and have some decently-priced cocktails at one of the many student bars around the city.

Here are more ideas for what to do while in Bologna for two days.

How to get there:

Direct train from Florence to Bologna. Book the fast train in advance for cheaper rates (takes 35 minutes), or around 1 hour 30 minutes for the cheaper train (buy tickets at the station, don’t forget to validate!) Book fast train tickets on Rail Europe for youth rates (up to 25 years) in dollars.

Read this post about how to navigate Italy’s train system before you travel.

Where to stay:

There aren’t any stand-out hostels in Bologna but you can get a basic hotel room for under $50 per person, and the nice part is you get all of the “extras” that you haven’t been getting at hostels — cleaning each day, fresh and free towels, free breakfast, etc. If you’re pinching pennies, only stay one night, and have two full days of eating and exploring before returning to Florence.

Cristina Rossi B&B – great location, you can walk to just about everywhere you’ll want to visit.

Hotel University – I stayed here with friends and it’s a lovely, basic hotel (with TVs) that has decent breakfast and friendly staff. Just around the corner is The Church, a bar that used to be, you guessed it, a church. Book a triple room for a cheaper price per person.

Hotel Accademia – really great location, has rooms with four twin beds, and although a little pricier (starting around $45/night), it would be a treat to stay in, plus free breakfast and private bathroom!

Also check Airbnb for other accommodation options.

Where to go on weekends when studying abroad in Florence. A great weekend trip for students is the Amalfi Coast, visiting towns like Positano, Amalfi, and Sorrento.

2. Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is a really popular beach destination for both study abroad students and visitors from all over the world. People love it because the area has a really great mix of culture of sunshine/beach time. This is also where the world-famous Blue Grotto is, the beaches of Positano, and visitors love getting a pair of custom leather sandals made here. The area is made up of a bunch of small towns, so there’s plenty to explore.

Tip: For a town that’s a bit off the beaten path here, visit Ravello. Insane views! Tip: Visit during the shoulder seasons for less crowds — try April and October.

Book a high-speed train to Naples , which direct is just under 3 hours. Once you arrive, visit the Circumvesuviana Line ticket booth and get a ticket to your final destination. If you have class on Thursday afternoon, you’ll want to take the first train from Florence at 8am on Friday. Remember that the earlier you book, then generally the cheaper the price will be.

If you’d rather not deal with trains and want to wake up on the Amalfi Coast on Friday morning, Bus2alps can get you down there by bus on Thursday night and organize pretty much everything else for you. Use promo code TheAbroadGuide for a 5% discount.

Seven Hostel – probably the most famous hostel in the area. It’s close to the beach and the train station, has a rooftop lounge and bar, and is a bit luxurious. Book by the bed or they even have private rooms.

Hostel Brikette – this is what you picture when you think of an Italian seaside hostel– cute, quaint design with unbeatable views of the sea from their terrace.

Where to go on weekends when studying abroad in Florence. Visit Verona on a weekend away from Florence for an easy trip that's to a city with history, culture, and some good bars.

If you love Florence, you’ll really enjoy Verona. They’re fairly similar but have some differences that make it worth the trip. There are loads of world-famous cultural attractions to visit (although I personally think you should skip the overrated Romeo and Juliet balcony, as it’s not even real!) but you can also experience the local side of the city if you just venture off the path a bit.

Super easy– book a high-speed, direct train to Verona on RailEurope.

B&B The Lions – a quaint B&B in a good location.

Casa Carega – a modern apartment in a great location for up to three people, quite reasonably priced.

The city isn’t known for its hostels, and most of the decent hotel options are most likely out of your budget, so definitely check Airbnb for better prices for a private room or entire apartment, especially if you’re traveling in a larger group. Your host should be able to also recommend some cool, budget-friendly things for you to do and see, and there’s always the bonus of saving money on food if you’ve got a kitchen in your rental.

Weekend trip ideas for study abroad students in Florence Italy. Interlaken is a really cool place to visit if you're studying abroad in Florence because there are tons of adventure activities you can do like sky diving, skiiing the Swiss Alps, and paragliding.

4. Interlaken

Lots of people who study abroad visit Interlaken and say it’s one of their favorite, if not THE favorite, places they visited in Europe. It’s insanely gorgeous, and is a great representation of Switzerland. It’s also a great place for adventure activity lovers, and what study abroad student isn’t into adventure? No matter what time of the year you visit, there are so many cool activities you can do, like skydiving, skiing the Alps, or canyon jumping (I did this — free-falling 100+ feet was INSANE).

The downside of Interlaken is the price. The country as a whole is very expensive and this town is too. If you’re super-budget conscious, it’s doable, you just have to be creative with your time– go for a free hike, explore the town, cook at the hostel, etc. I’d also recommend using the company mentioned below, because they take students there most weekends, they’ve negotiated decent prices for their passengers.

If you’re keen to get there on your own, train is the “easiest” option, since the closest airport to Interlaken is Geneva. To get there by train, you’ll need to get yourself to Milan, then change one more time before you make it to Interlaken’s station.

How I got there was with Bus2alps . We left late on Thursday, so I slept on the coach bus and arrived early Friday morning. After a quick nap, I was up and ready for exploring that morning. It was way easier and less stressful than taking three trains. Use promo code TheAbroadGuide for a 5% discount on your trip.

Balmer’s Hostel (in our best cheap hostels post ) – this is where I chose to stay, and if you’re looking to party, this is the place to stay. If you want something quieter, look at my next option. But the hostel is huge, the atmosphere is busy and fun, and it’s like you’re staying in a ski lodge, complete with a hammock room. Just know that the rooms are tiny, so your bed might be right next to someone else’s, but you can get pretty cheap beds here if you opt for a larger room!

Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof – more of a modern hotel than Balmer’s is, this place is pretty nice and offers a lot of extras for guests, which makes up for the higher price tag. Great location too.

YouthHostel Interlaken – more like a luxe hotel than a hostel!

Four Places to Visit While Studying Abroad in Rome

April 4, 2024

italian countryside

I absolutely adored studying abroad in Rome . It has so much history and things to see and do. You can learn something from every piece of ruins it has to offer. While I loved Rome, I knew I wanted to see more of Italy. Rome is not only a great place to be itself, but it is also a great place to get to other locations from.

My favorite place I visited in Italy was Capri. Now I know that the Amalfi Coast can be very busy and expensive, but I do think that if you are in Italy it is a must-see at least once. If you are planning on staying in Amalfi or the famous Positano, I recommend rethinking that and looking for an Airbnb in Atrani. Atrani is the next city over from Amalfi and it is only a five-minute walk away. There is a tunnel you can take that leads directly to Amalfi from Atrani and staying in Atrani I found it to be significantly cheaper.

From Atrani you are able to take a ferry to Capri which is an Island right off of the coast. There I saw the bluest waters I had ever seen! The island was gorgeous surrounded by mountains and decorated with the most colourful wildflowers. If you go to Capri I recommend looking online beforehand for a boat tour around the island, the sights from the water looking onto the island were incredible.

My next runner-up to my favourite place I visited in Italy was Venice, the city built on water. Venice is about a four-hour train ride from Rome, hence my friends and I decided to take a day trip to Venice which I would recommend. We took a 6:00 am train and went in at around 10:00 am. Since Venice is so small I think you can do and see everything you want in a day. We walked around the entire city, went to Saint Mark's Basilica, saw the grand canal, had some spritz’s, and took a ride in the gondola.

Lastly, make sure to visit Lake Como if you have the opportunity. I know understand why Lake Como is so many people's dream wedding location. It was by far one of the most beautiful places I visited while abroad. It is a little far so a weekend trip is needed, however, I promise it will be worth every second.

Read More: How to Study Abroad in Europe: 3 Steps

Step #1: Choose Your Program

Determine when you want to go on your study abroad program – spring , summer , fall , or winter . Our programs are available year-round. Next, look at the available Europe study abroad programs that fit your desired timeframe and start narrowing down which countries and programs seem the most exciting. It’s also a good idea to begin browsing scholarship and grant options during this first step. We offer many, and your school might have some financial aid, too.

Step #2: Get Expert Advice

Step #4: Start Packing

Get packing! You’ll want to ensure you have your essential documents and other necessary items like comfortable walking shoes, prescription medication, and more. More on this later. After your suitcase is stuffed, prepare for the adventure of a lifetime in Europe.

Our four-step process is a general overview of how to study abroad in Europe with CIEE – let’s take a closer look at some details!

  • France
  • Germany
  • Ireland
