The fourth ODI was marred with controversy. Paul Collingwood appealed a controversial run out of Grant Elliott after Elliott had collided with Ryan Sidebottom and injured himself. While this action initially drew criticism from the New Zealand dressing room, Daniel Vettori admitted during the post-game press conference that the Black Caps' reaction was "a little bit over the top" Collingwood also admitted that he probably made the wrong decision in not withdrawing the appeal. Later, the ICC banned Collingwood for four ODI matches due to England's slow over rate, with England having bowled only 47 overs in the required time. The ICC also fined the rest of the English team 15% of their match fee. Kevin Pietersen was called upon to take over as captain for the final game.

Milestones for Bouchier and Wyatt as England clinch New Zealand series in style

England had a day out in Wellington as they cruised past New Zealand to open up a 3-1 lead in their five-match T20I series.

New Zealand v England, Scorecard

Openers Maia Bouchier and Danni Wyatt brought up career milestones as England created history during their series-clinching 47-run victory over New Zealand in Wellington on Wednesday.

Bouchier hit a career-best 91 and Wyatt surpassed former skipper Charlotte Edwards for the most T20I runs scored by an England women's player as the visitors opened up an unassailable 3-1 series lead with a commanding triumph ahead of this year's ICC Women's T20 World Cup.

It was Bouchier that paced England's innings during her 56-ball stay, as the right-hander amassed the highest T20I score by a visiting female player against New Zealand and in the process helped her side put on the largest T20I total any team has produced against the Kiwis on their home soil.

Bouchier smashed 12 fours and two massive sixes during her impressive knock, surpassing the previous best of 86 by India's Smriti Mandhana in Hamilton in 2019 for the highest T20I score by a visiting female player against the Kiwis in New Zealand.

Wyatt fell early in England's innings, but not before she went past Edwards' tally of 2605 for the most T20I runs scored by an England women's player.

Nat Sciver-Brunt (29), Alice Capsey (25) and skipper Heather Knight (21) all provided Bouchier some support as England put together a big score and in reply New Zealand lost experienced opener Suzie Bates (four) early in their run chase.

Brooke Halliday (25) and Bernadine Bezuidenhout (23) battled hard to help overcome the loss of skipper Sophie Devine to a quad injury, but Charlie Dean's magnificent four-wicket haul ensured the visitors held on and England clinched the victory.

The fifth and final match of the series will be held in Wellington on Friday.

England players including Owen Farrell (centre) face the All Blacks performing the haka before their 2019 World Cup semi-final in Japan

Steve Borthwick begins planning England’s attack on the All Blacks

  • Coach to fly to New Zealand for reconnaissance trip on Monday
  • RFU contracts to be finalised to help establish player availability

Steve Borthwick will fly to New Zealand on Monday for a reconnaissance mission as he begins plotting England’s summer assault on the All Blacks – just 48 hours after the end of their Six Nations campaign.

Borthwick travels to New Zealand buoyed by the manner in which England finished the tournament – even in defeat against France on Saturday night – after his players came so close to backing up the thrilling win against Ireland with a victory for the ages in Lyon.

After a sluggish start to the competition, England rediscovered their attacking identity in the last two rounds and brought back the feelgood factor, before games against Japan in June and back-to-back Tests against the All Blacks in July.

With England searching for a first win on tour against the All Blacks since 2003 Borthwick pledged to take a full-strength squad on the summer tour rather than rest senior players. On their last trip to New Zealand in 2014 England were whitewashed under Stuart Lancaster but, having scouted out Japan before the Six Nations, Borthwick will leave no stone unturned as he seeks to build upon his side’s recent promise.

“Every time an England team comes together we intend to be improving and get better,” the head coach said. “I am on a plane to New Zealand on Monday, I have got to go and put plans in place for where we are going to be and how we will do it, so we prepare properly.

Steve Borthwick on the pitch before France v England in Lyon

“In a week’s time we will understand exactly where we are going with our training programmes, our locations, our venues, so we give the team the best opportunity to get the result we want. I’ll be taking the very best players that are available for selection at that point in time.”

On the eve of the Six Nations, Borthwick was frustrated that information about injuries to some of his players was slow in being provided by Premiership clubs but when he returns from the summer tour he intends to finalise who will be offered the 25 “enhanced” Rugby Football Union contracts which will give him a greater say in the conditioning of his troops all year round. Details remain thin on the ground, however, with Jamie George – one of only two players to be offered an enhanced deal – admitting last week that “we don’t know in what capacity or what value or who might get them”.

Borthwick said: “All details have not been confirmed. I’m waiting to have them and understand them. In terms of understanding where our players are at, so there are no surprises at the start of the tournament. So the night the squad is finalised, [we are not] finding out players are unavailable. Situations like that we won’t have in the future.

after newsletter promotion

“The working relationship with the Premiership clubs is a step forward and it is preparing players better for the international environment without question – and I want that to continue. My relationship with all the head coaches, directors of rugby and clubs is vitally important. We all want the best players playing to the best of their abilities so we have the best Premiership product and an England team that is ready.

“We started the tournaments with some players unavailable for selection and we need our players available. You can see now there’s a development with the Premiership. You see the standard of the Premiership is improving and the players are more ready for Test rugby. Going forward we need to make sure that when we have a Test coming that those players are available and fit from the start of the tournament.”

Five questions for England women to answer on their white ball tour of New Zealand

Charlie Dean celebrates playing a T20I for England women

England women will tour New Zealand for five T20Is and three ODIs starting next week (March 19). Here’s what’s on their check-list ahead of the series.

With the countdown on to the T20 World Cup in October, England only have eight further T20Is scheduled after the series in New Zealand. With that in mind, the series presents an opportunity to solidify plans going into the competition, and to narrow down the playing group earmarked to travel to Bangladesh in six months time.

What spin balance fits best?

With Sophie Ecclestone unavailable for the first three T20Is, England have drafted in leg-spinner Linsey Smith alongside Sarah Glenn and Charlie Dean. In last year’s T20 World Cup, three spinners were preferred in South African conditions to compliment a two-seam attack along with Nat Sciver-Brunt.

However, in their most recent tour of India , in only one of the three T20Is did England go with the three-spinner balance, instead using an extra seamer. While the squad selected for this series only includes two specialist seamers (Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer), how they manage without Ecclestone in the side will also be an important learning experience. Dean took the lead while Ecclestone was out injured against Sri Lanka at the end of the 2023 summer, but only took one wicket across three T20Is (she had more success in the ODI series).

Who are the second/third seamers?

England’s much talked about group of young fast bowlers coming through the ranks is beginning to look suddenly quite thin compared to this time last year. With Bell established as the leader of the attack in T20Is, Filer has been entrusted as her deputy for the New Zealand series.

Mahika Gaur, who had a challenging T20I tour of India, is back in England completing her school exams while Issy Wong’s difficult outing against Sri Lanka last summer was her only match in and England shirt in 2023. Freya Kemp’s back injury is still being managed and she won’t be a part of the T20I series. While clearly trying to strike a balance between experience and workload management, England are risking their fast-bowlers going into Bangladesh undercooked.

Can Dunkley find her form again?

Sophia Dunkley’s form has been the most prominent question over England’s batting lineup over the last year. Promoted up the order to open in 2022 following success in the Hundred, she averaged just 17 in T20Is in 2023, passing 50 once. While Jon Lewis has been clear that he sees the potentially explosive opening partnership between Danni Wyatt and Dunkley crucial, there are signs Dunkley’s place could be under threat.

Tammy Beaumont has been recalled to the T20I squad after an exceptional short-format summer, and Maia Bouchier has also made the trip after deputising for Dunkley against Sri Lanka. A relatively long T20I series could provide an opportunity to Test replacements at the top.

How to solidify consistent success?

While England won their most recent T20I series in India, their results in the format have been patchy over the last couple of years. They were beaten by Sri Lanka for the first time last summer, albeit missing key squad members, having beaten Australia less than two months before.

Even in India, there were definite holes to be exploited . While England put on 197-6 in the first T20I, only three batters made double figures in the innings. Having bowled India out for 80 in the second match, they slipped to 73-6 before reaching their target. In India’s only win in the final match of the series, four batters were dismissed for golden ducks before England were skittled out for 126. While there’s been definite progress in approach over Lewis’ tenure to date, consistent success and being able to dominate games is still not consistently there.

Can the new faces break into the first-choice squad?

The absence of familiar faces for the first part of the series has given a chance to Hollie Armitage and Linsey Smith to force their way into mainstream contention. With England’s spin riches, Smith has a chance to advocate for spot as Sarah Glenn’s understudy and pick up a first international cap since 2019.

Armitage’s sustained domestic returns also give her an outside shot of breaking into a batting order which has been difficult to find a sustained place in apart from its main core. While neither player would necessarily have been on T20 World Cup radar, there’s an opportunity to infiltrate the conversation around the wider squad that will head to Bangladesh in October.

England fall apart as New Zealand snatch victory in thrilling 3rd T20 by three runs to narrow series to 2-1

Oli Gent

Updated 24/03/2024 at 14:59 GMT

England crumbled to a three-run defeat in their third T20 against New Zealand at Saxton Field in Nelson, leaving the tour hanging in the balance at 2-1 going into Wednesday's fourth match. The Three Lions were chasing 156 and were cruising to victory needing just 29 off 29 balls, but they collapsed spectacularly, losing six wickets for 25 runs after a strong start lead by Maia Bouchier.
