The Who Announce 2022 Tour

By Allison Hussey

The Whos Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend

The Who have announced an extensive tour of North America and the United Kingdom, their first since 2019’s Moving On! Tour . It’s dubbed the Who Hits Back! Tour and it begins in Florida this spring before wrapping in Las Vegas in November. See the full run of dates below.

After more than a decade, the band returned with Who —their first album since 2006’s Endless Wire —in late 2019. Between the albums, guitarist Pete Townshend issued the 2015 compilation Truancy . Singer Roger Daltrey released a project of his own in 2018 with As Long as I Have You . The Who reissued The Who Sell Out in an elaborate box set edition last year.

The Who Announce 29-Date North American Tour

by Jacob Uitti February 8, 2022, 10:55 am

Legendary British-born rock band The Who announced that they will be going out on the road for a massive 29-date tour this year. The group is calling it “The Who Hits Back!” tour. These upcoming gigs mark the first time the band has played in America since the 2019 string of dates they called their “Moving On!” tour.

The band took to social media to announce the news. On Twitter, they wrote to their hundreds of thousands of fans: “The Who announce a brand new tour for 2022 . . . THE WHO HITS BACK! Our North American trek will be another rock n’ roll knockout, kicking off 22 April and running through to May 29 The fall leg starts October 2, 2022 and ends November 5. The band’s upcoming dates have been split into two legs: spring and fall. The dates kick off on April 22 in Hollywood, California, and the first set of dates concludes on May 28 in New York. Then the band continues on October 2, beginning the second leg at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario. This second tour concludes on November 5 in Las Vegas.

The Who—not to be confused with the World Health Organization—will also hit New York City’s Madison Square Garden on May 26 and appear at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on April 30.

The group’s remaining founding members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend will be joined by a slew of artists to back them up, several of whom have rock pedigree. A few of these touring musicians include guitarist Simon Townshend and drummer Zak Starkey.

“Pete and I said we’d be back,” Daltrey said. “But we didn’t think we’d have to wait for two years for the privilege. This is making the chance to perform feel even more special this time around.

“So many livelihoods have been impacted due to Covid, so we are thrilled to get everyone back together—the band, the crew and the fans. We’re gearing up for a great show that hits back in the only way The Who know how: by giving it everything we got,” he concluded.

Tickets go on general sale on February 11 at 10 AM local time via Live Nation .

The Who Announce Dates for 2022 North American Tour

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

The Who are heading back to North America in late April for an extensive tour that will keep them on the road through early November. They will once again be joined by local orchestras at every stop for an evening of music heavy on classics from Tommy , Quadrophenia , Who’s Next , and their 2019 LP Who in addition to selections from their other albums.

Some of the shows were originally booked for 2019 and delayed because Roger Daltrey was suffering from a vocal ailment, while others were scheduled for 2020 and postponed due to the pandemic. They have added several shows to the itinerary, and they’re calling the whole tour “The Who Hits Back!”

They first tried out the orchestra concept on 2019’s Moving On! tour. Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey were joined for that run by their longtime drummer Zak Starkey, bassist Jon Button, guitarist-vocalist Simon Townshend (Pete’s brother), keyboardist Loren Gold, bassist Jon Button, background vocalist Billy Nicholls, orchestra conductor Keith Levenson, lead violinist Katie Jacoby, and lead cellist Audrey Snyder. That same team is back this time around, though they’ll be joined by additional keyboardist Emily Marshall.

Townshend says the presence of the orchestras gives him a focus he doesn’t have at traditional Who concerts. “It gives me a chance to make sure what I play, what I do, where I look, how I behave on the stage, is more connected with the people around me,” he tells Rolling Stone , “and with the audience, and with, to get prosaic about it, an inner sense.

“In other words,” he continues, “I don’t lose myself the way I did when I used to jump around, have a big adrenaline rush, and then come off the stage and someone would say, ‘Great show,’ or someone would say, ‘Terrible show,’ and I wouldn’t really know what I had done, to be honest, since I was like someone running a marathon. So the orchestra gives me space.”

Notable shows on the tour include a headlining set at the New Orleans Jazz Fest, a return to the original Woodstock site in Bethel Woods, New York, and the band’s first concert in Cincinnati, Ohio, since the 1979 gig where 11 Who fans died in a stampede shortly after the doors opened.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

“At last, we can close the loop on the disaster that happened back in 1979,” says Townshend. “We’ve done a lot of work on that. There’s been a documentary [ The Who: The Night That Changed Rock ] about it. This has been in the air for a while.”

And even though Daltrey is 77 and Townshend is 76, they’re not billing this as the band’s final tour. “Roger is of the opinion that he wants to sing until he drops,” says Townshend. “That’s not my philosophy of life. There are other things that I want to do, still want to do, and will do, I hope. I hope I’ll live long enough to do them.”

“But it’s not a farewell tour,” he continues. “Apart from anything else, we still have people who have tickets for the U.K. 2019 tour. We’re very, very keen to do that tour and we’ll be doing that tour in 2023, I think. But I’m I’m talking about stuff I don’t really know about. I don’t have any guarantees, like everybody else. I don’t really know for sure what’s going to happen next month.”

The Who Hits Back! Tour: London, 12 July 2023

the who tour running times

The Who Live in London, sounds appropriate!

Let’s back up a bit, just two days. Monday we’d come down from Edinburgh: most on planes, some on trains, some in private cars. We have this “travel day” and another off in London. Monday evening was a special gathering, several years in the making. Our own Alan Rogan, longtime Pete Townshend guitar roadie and road-crew chief, and general man-about-town had passed away back in 2019, just a couple of days before our huge Wembley Arena concert. His daughter Kerri had planned a memorial service during our next tour – which was the tour canceled from Coronavirus. And since then, we’ve not been back with this orchestral run. So, here we are. With Alan being such a well-known and accomplished musical accomplice, we didn’t know who might be there, but it was indeed a Who’s who’s-who of musical people that came to honor the man who made us laugh (and more.)

the who tour running times

Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones (besides the Rolling Stones and The Who; these are two of the original Faces together hanging and talking), Brian Johnson (AC/DC), Nick Lowe, most of the Townshend clan, (more than I’ve ever seen in a room together), Zak Starkey family, John Porter (Roxy Music, producer), Jody Linscott (Who/Daltrey/Townshend percussionist), Andy Fairweather-Low (Roger Waters, Clapton). Plus The Who’s main team (crew and family and office), including about a hundred of Alan’s closest friends, some who had flown in from the USA just for the event. Alan was indeed an influential person – the precise person who chose certain people (like myself and others) to join The Who world. Thanks, mate, that favor cannot ever be repaid! Pete and Rog were still traveling to town so unable to attend, but there were sweet videos sent by Pete, Irish Jack, Graham Nash and Chuck Leavell of The Rolling Stones. You may be surprised to know that Alan’s ashes have traveled the world and now (secretly) reside in some of the world’s great music venues where Alan worked. Very apropos.

Then, after a full-day-off in this busy and legendary city, we are in the O2 Arena, the premiere indoor venue in London. Greenwich is to the south side, just below the River Thames that winds through the city (we are on the less-busy, less-crowded side of that river). You’ve heard of Greenwich Mean Time?  Yes, all time worldwide is set relative to this place, and the old Naval facility and vintage buildings all around lend an air of grace and upscale feeling to the area. They took a relatively unused space and created the O2 complex; a huge dome with towering things poking out of the top. It’s really a massive entertainment complex and tourist hub. Tons of food and shopping options and multiple venues in this place. It’s right next to a large London Underground station, so very few would drive here, but instead take the trains or some bus system and get dropped off. By the thousands. It’s intense.

The guest list queue snaking out from the main entrance

Which brings us to the notable part of the day: guests. It’s London, it’s The Who, it’s industry and friends and families – so we have an issue. Or rather 450+ of them tonight. The legendary “guest list” – those people who are allowed in for free, usually with a ticketed seat for the show, and maybe some kind of backstage pass or access of some kind. In most cities, we have maybe 20 to 40 guests. But not London (or NYC or LA). To be honest, we are given seats by the promoter – seats they would otherwise love to $ell for lots and lots of money. Especially in a place like London where we can normally $ell seats for most of Wembley Stadium (maybe six-times bigger than this arena). Initially, we were given a set of tickets to give away: just 100. Nice, but not nearly enough! Negotiations were done about three weeks ago, when we started the European leg of the tour. From there, we received another 200 tickets, 300 total. And remember, those tickets could be VERY expensive seats that the promoter cannot now sell, so they are essentially handing us back quite a bit of value, but it’s a game that must be played on both sides. And it’s reasonable to know that this band and this venue have obligations to their families and business contacts, that original 100 was just too low.

the who tour running times

Our man in the hot seat today is Joe Garlipp: Joe’s been with us for about a decade or so, and he handles various duties. Sometimes we call him “the band handler” – he gets them in and out of hotels and airports and concert venues. It’s a serious job, and the guest list is mainly a daily slice of that job. However, this list started weeks ago, when he warned everyone that the guest request was already insane – and if you don’t request at the very least a week in advance, you’re not getting anyone in. (Most of us tried to avoid the nonsense and simply offered our friends better tickets and a better experience if our guests came to any show besides London!) Still, some “important” people didn’t know and showed up this week with requests to the band or management that they must get it. And some made it – our final roll call was over 450 people allowed in – some without seats; they were given passes to stand anywhere they could find. Many people with seats didn’t get the backstage access, but most were given a room and a space to “be backstage” but not given access to our dressing room area or work spaces.

All day long, Joe was processing names and tickets and passes, each different to the rest in priority and access. Checking, double-checking. Others, including me, were drafted in to help. It took so much time that the line outside (see photo) of the Who guest list snaked around forever, with nearly 500 people waiting for their precious access to be handed to them. I was out there during the opening act – and most of them were still outside. I even saw and talked to Paul Townshend, Pete’s brother, who was one of the many waiting, hoping to be inside in time for The Who bit. So; here’s an example of the situation inside. Pete has many guests – including his own family, siblings, his children, grandchildren. Close friends, business friends, etc. So they assign him a room just for those guests – I hear about 45 people. Pete is clever and aware. Several days ago, he ordered a small PA system to be delivered and set up in the room. With everyone gathered, he walked in and said basically “I’m so thankful you’re here and would love to talk to every one of you, but just to say ‘hello and goodbye’ briefly would take over an hour, and I’m saving my voice for the show.” Smart move, and no one could argue the logic. I’ve never heard of such a thing before, but it’s a smart boundary to set, and gets the job done. We’re here for the big show and those people can all be in contact another time.

the who tour running times

Inside the building, we are doing pretty well. It’s a change for us, to be back in a proper arena, with real dressing rooms and loading area, air conditioning, toilets, and local workers who know what they’re doing. In fact, we are quite relaxed and relieved after the dirt and dust and rain of Hull, and the tight spaces of Edinburgh Castle – this is a piece of cake for us, which bodes well for the show. Soundcheck – sorta, we have everyone here, but Roger’s car is stuck in London rush-hour and doesn’t make it in time. Pete’s leaving the stage and the band and orchestra are all gone when Rog rushes in. There’s a little negotiation and Pete takes the break and the backing band comes back to run a little song bit or two for Roger. Ah well, c’est la vie .

the who tour running times

Isabella Coulstock is our opening act today, hand-picked by Who co-manager Robert Rosenberg. She has a stunning voice, and played along on her acoustic guitar. It’s a bit more quiet and moody than most of our openers, but this audience is not like the impatient rowdy crowds of most other bands; they like songwriting and craft, and they appreciate her talent so she’s listened-to politely and applauded well after each number. But it’s a slower start than we’re used to. Easy for the crew, though, as we don’t have to move so much equipment before The Who come onstage.

the who tour running times

Despite the efforts, we still have a ton of people backstage, most deservedly so, so Rog and Pete do have a lot more contact to say “hey” to them as they head to the stage. And then coming onstage, Pete yells hello to the audience “WAKE THE FUCK UP!!!” Everyone laughs, but they are a bit more quiet than usual, but maybe (a) difficult to get here and get in (b) not as drunk as some crowds. Then he gets more serious and thanks them for the effort to travel out to the distant O2, which is so hard to access. “But it’s great to be here in London . . .” Tommy rolls out as usual, the same excerpts, but today, we hear it in the city where it was born.

‘1921’; I’m always struck by this one, certainly this and ‘Eminence Front’ are the two pieces that may be better than ever with the orchestra. ‘1921’ is such beautiful writing – not a bombast or hit, but if you analyse the melodic movement and harmonic/rhythmic parts, it’s a stunning piece of writing. Maybe not as hooky as hearing ‘Who are you’ or ‘Teenage wasteland’ yelled out – but listen again to it closely; it’s one of Tommy ‘s great pieces. It’s the era of strong songwriting, before power and production ideas were really captured well in the studio, so the melodies and chord changes were the power – and old Tommy remains a monster of exceptional songwriting. ‘Sensation’, ‘It’s A Boy’, ‘Amazing Journey’, ‘1921’. ‘Go To The Mirror ‘, ‘Sally Simpson’; probably all better writing than the most-famous ‘Pinball Wizard’, really. But many of these we don’t get to hear during our shows presently. I should go listen elsewhere.

the who tour running times

Speaking of ‘Pinball Wizard’ – it’s usually the moment where the crowd comes alive; and they don’t. Maybe a good sign, that these are not likely the casual Who fan who come to some shows. These are likely longtime fans of all ages, they know the whole catalogue and are interested in all of it equally, as you or I likely would be. After Tommy , Pete introduces our Heart of England Orchestra. And then points out “you probably noticed our three percussionists were a little bit out of control!” he jokes. Indeed, their control is not one of playing – they are great, perfect, really. But they like to show off and throw their arms out when playing, twirl sticks in the air, etc. It’s very showy and fun, nobody minds in the least. We’ll probably get more details form the orchestra for the blog, because I can write about the same things over and over – plus we’re living on the road with them for this tour, something that really makes our lives better.

‘Eminence Front’ has a very different, angular and cool guitar solo in front, I really liked it. Pete is, as always, unafraid to step into unknown territory each night. Speaking of age and touring, Pete then mentions that he’s been talking a lot to his very good friend Elton John daily, and Elton calls Pete’s wife in his bathrobe nearly every day. Elton is about to retire from the road himself soon.

the who tour running times

Pete admits that he grew up “a bit weird” in a show-biz family, living backstage since he was young; it’s in his blood. But in recent years he’s been able to appreciate the gifts that live performance brings them. He says they’re about to play some pieces with the less-disciplined band members (non-orchestra) and play some of the songs from the earlier days (to big cheers from the crowd.) Among these was a surprise for London; ‘Anyway Anyhow Anywhere’! The Mod anthem itself. It’s pretty rough, honestly, because we were supposed to have a rehearsal of it (or two) today when the traffic situation happened. And, being The Who, they don’t care if it’s perfect – whereas other bands would have never played it without proper testing first. Regardless of the details, it sounds good, and is a welcome addition. And ‘Substitute’, another ’60s singles classic.

Pete mentions “So in actuality, you have to be pretty old to remember these songs.” (Some cheers and boos from those who disagree.) “It’s not a bad thing to be the oldest person in the building. (lots of laughs) Is it, Roger?” (Rog is slightly older, and everyone laughs at this realisation that it wasn’t Pete thinking of ‘imself.) Pete continues, “So, being the oldest, can you impart some wisdom to the good people here?” “Don’t bloody look at me!” Roger replies. Pete answers him “Then I dedicate this next song to you – ‘I Can’t Explain’!” Very cool to have it in the set tonight as well. It feels a bit weird, only in that it was the starting-gun for so many hundreds of shows. It possibly reminds me of that, so being placed in the middle is no issue – just unusual. Pete used to hit the solo and his first windmills of the day during that – and the moment always lit the crowd up unanimously there. ‘My Generation’ – so good that it’s back. ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’ – probably (with ‘Baba O’Riley’) always the most-popular piece of every show. It has a big ending this time, strong and healthy.

Video courtesy of the Gazzas

They finish the band set with ‘Behind Blue Eyes’. Twice. Yes, most of the way through the first time, Rog stops everyone and says “Start again!!” There is a brief pause and he says “I need to have a word with my soundman” as he’s having troubles. Pete jokes “NO” and Roger says back “I told ‘im” – and they restart. Pete sort of covers up the difficult spot by joking around “You know, back before I came out tonight, I’m looking down at my feet – I have these very nice Prada boots – and I had them on the wrong feet! You’re so lucky I even found the right venue tonight” They are indeed nice boots, like the up-market version of the old Doc Martens he used to stomp on every show.

the who tour running times

Heading into Quadrophenia , Pete mentions a memory; in 1968 he’d battled with Kit Lambert (manager and producer) about adding an orchestra to the original Tommy album. Pete felt it was wrong, that they were a “rock band” and that John Entwistle’s French horn would be enough of that on the record. But in 1973, he’d “spent so much time on souped-up organ and synthesiser tracks trying to sound like an orchestra” that it’s really the appropriate music to add an orchestra on top for these shows.

the who tour running times

Tonight’s ‘5:15’ has some real energy, and you can tell Pete is pleased it’s actually taking off a bit. As usual, the Quadrophenia set relies on precision and execution – so it really does work well when it matches the record everyone knows. During the band introductions, everything’s going well, until Zak leans over too far backward when applauding for another band member, and his chair goes end-over, dumping him onto the stage behind. Not many saw it (even though he live-streamed it on his phone) and suddenly Rog and Pete are looking for him “Where did you go, Zak!?” when he pops up, evidently unharmed, just in time for a rocking rendition of ‘Baba O’Riley’ to close out the show. Roger closes out the show with a great sentiment – “Thanks SO much; we really appreciate it, more than you can ever know!” True, they do love this, and without the fans, it would not be what it is. The band then left the stage and the lights dimmed leaving just Pete and Roger in a single spotlight who then gave us ‘Tea & Theatre’, Pete on acoustic guitar, Rog on vocals.

the who tour running times

This felt like a really strong show. Each person in the room has a different impression. I felt it was musically pretty damn good, although not magical status, yet the audience was sitting quietly for most of this – unlike rowdy and drunk Edinburgh, which didn’t have the musical level but had the attitude. So, without question a really good show with the hometown audience. Still many told me it was exceptional – and I’ll believe them, as they probably hear a clearer, more-balanced version of the show there out-front where it counts most.

With London done and gone, we have six more to go on this run (I think.) Every tour has a “stumble start” (Hull) and then a “getting into it” phase (Edinburgh and London) and then it all becomes normal; no more remembering parts or dealing with issues – and usually some real magic happens. If you’re thinking of it, I encourage anyone in the UK to choose and see one of these coming shows. They are kind of small venues, not sold out yet, and that encourages the spark of wildness we appreciate. We never know when the big end of it all will actually happen, but I do know that it’s likely we’re going to feel The Who magic hit hard some night when it all lines up; no one is worried or caring too much, and the stars align for the moment, musical greatness exceeds the normal.

The Who announce 2023 orchestral tour – with UB40 at regional shows

The nine-date run of shows is The Who's first tour for six years

The Who

The Who have announced a 2023 UK tour where they will be accompanied by an orchestra on each date.

  • READ MORE: Roger Daltrey tells us about plans to stream unseen TCT gigs from The Cure, Muse, Pulp and more

The tour is the ’60s legends’ first tour for six years and will kick off on July 6 in Hull, after which they will play a mixture of indoor and outdoor shows across the country before signing off in Brighton on July 23. The nine-date run of shows will see the band return to Edinburgh for the first time in over 40 years, while they will also perform in Derby for the first time since 1966.

Sections of the show will be devoted to the group’s classic albums ‘Tommy’ and ‘Quadrophenia’, while they will also be playing songs from their most recent album, 2019’s ‘WHO’, which was their first studio album for 13 years.

UB40 featuring Ali Campbell will be joining them on all shows apart from Edinburgh and London.

The Who

“Having not toured the UK for six years, it’s great that at this time of our careers we have the chance to go to places that are not on the usual touring map – Edinburgh Castle and Derby, as well as the other cities across the country that we haven’t been to for decades, will make this very special for me,” said singer Roger Daltrey. “This opportunity will give our UK Who fans the chance to hear our current show, which, with the addition of an orchestra, takes our music to new heights.”

Pete Townshend added: “Roger initially christened this tour with an orchestra ‘Moving On!’ I love it. It is what both of us want to do. Move on, with new music, classic Who music, all performed in new and exciting ways. Taking risks, nothing to lose. I’m really looking forward to bringing this show to the UK.”

Tickets will go on general sale on Friday, February 3, at 10am. The band has encouraged fans to donate £1 when they buy their ticket to Teenage Cancer Trust, which they have longtime patrons of. You can see the full list of dates below and buy your tickets here .

JULY 6 – Hull, Sewell Group Craven Park 8 – Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle 9 – Edinburgh, Edinburgh Castle 12 – London, The O2  14 – Derby, Incora County Ground 16 – Bristol, Badminton Estate  19 – Durham, Seat Unique Riverside 21 – St Helens, Totally Wicked Stadium 23 – Brighton, 1st Central Cricket Ground

The Who toured the US with an orchestra at the tail end of last year. At one show in Long Island, they surprised fans by playing ‘Young Man’s Blues’ , which they have only ever played six times in the last 40 years.

Music and Lyrics by Pete Townshend Book by Pete Townshend and Des McAnuff Directed by Des McAnuff

“Broadway has nothing else like this wizardry going on” – Chicago Tribune

June 13 - August 6, 2023 in Goodman's Albert Theatre

Around 2 hours including one intermission.

The Who’s Tommy

Performances are Sold Out. Thank you, Chicago!

The groundbreaking pop-culture musical sensation is reimagined in a new production.

Myth and spectacle combine in a fresh reinvention of The Who’s exhilarating 1969 rock concept album, Tommy —including the unforgettable anthems “I’m Free,” “See Me, Feel Me,” “Sensation” and “Pinball Wizard.” After witnessing his father shoot his rival, the young Tommy Walker is lost in the universe, endlessly and obsessively staring into the mirror. An innate knack for pinball catapults him from reticent adolescent to celebrity savior. Tony Award-winning composer Pete Townshend and Tony Award-winning original director Des McAnuff find powerful resonance reexamining this iconic story for today.

Recommended for ages 16 and up.

The Who plays its ‘final’ tour — again

The Who — or more accurately, surviving members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey — plays at KeyArena on Sunday, May 15. The band says it’s its final tour, but it’s said that before. Reports from the road suggest The Who still brings it every night.

Share story

The Who returns to Seattle on Sunday (May 15) for what the band has described as its “last” tour. Original band members Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend play with Zak Starkey (Ringo Starr’s son), Simon Townshend (Pete Townshend’s brother) and Pino Palladino (longtime touring bassist).

If this is, indeed, The Who’s last hurrah, the band is going out with a bang, playing songs like “My Generation” as if they were young men again. Reviews of early shows have been positive, and with 50 years of history, the generous set lists have included two dozen songs from the early days, as well as hits like 1981’s “You Better You Bet.”

If you’re a longtime Who fan, the “last tour” billing may confuse you. Depending on how you count tours — multiple dates or just one-offs like “Live Aid” — the band has already done at least four “final tours.”

Concert preview

7:30 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at KeyArena, 305 Harrison St., Seattle; $35.50-$135.50 (800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com ).

But after Keith Moon died in 1978, then bassist John Entwistle in 2002, a Daltrey/Townshend Who has been a different kind of beast, in any case. The two men have struggled to come to terms with their legacy, and with each other.

Daltrey backed off the “final” tour wording slightly, recently telling Rolling Stone it was “The last old-fashioned, big tour.”

Daltrey is 71 and Townshend is 70. Both have said the demands of touring are now difficult. Townshend told Mojo that even if this is the final Who tour, he and Daltrey will most likely still create music together in some form, but probably not as The Who.

In the article, Townshend joked, “As Roger says, we’re lucky that we’re not in some old people’s home and that we can do this now.”

Townshend played down what English newspapers say is his running feud with Daltrey. Still, Townshend told Uncut recently, “I don’t find The Who’s shows fulfilling, but I’m brilliant at it.”

Townshend is, indeed, a brilliant player, so expect guitar “windmills,” perhaps a smashed guitar, and likely an exciting performance in what may really be The Who’s “final” Seattle show.

For those keeping count, The Who’s first “final” Seattle show happened in 1982 with the Clash opening. It was a brilliant concert and would have been a fitting farewell.

But it wasn’t; the band keeps returning, unable in some ways to say goodbye for good. But the one thing we do know for certain is that The Who won’t be returning to that same 1982 venue ever again. That was at the Kingdome, which was demolished in 2000.

After impeachment acquittal, Texas AG Ken Paxton is out for revenge

Image: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton

Ken Paxton hit the campaign trail with a smile last week.

Beaming in photos he posted of events in Collin County, Denton County, Grayson County and Tarrant County, the Texas Republican attorney general campaigned and promoted more than a dozen candidates on the ballot in this week’s primary election.

Most are new faces to the Republican Party, because Paxton, the legally embattled but popular statewide official, isn’t seeking to shore up his party’s incumbents: Paxton is out for revenge.

“It’s time for a whole new slate in Collin County,” he wrote in one post with a photo of him and five Republican candidates seeking to oust incumbents. Two of them are running in the same race — his tweet suggests voters pick one — but all share one key characteristic in their primaries: They didn’t vote to impeach the attorney general last year.

Paxton was impeached on corruption charges by the Texas state House last May, with 60 votes coming from his own party, before the Texas state Senate acquitted him in September and restored him to office.

Now, the attorney general has issued endorsements to candidates in more than 70 contests, with most going to Republican lawmakers who voted against his impeachment or those challenging GOP incumbents who voted for it. His social media accounts boast a two-page, single-spaced list of endorsements up and down the primary ballot Tuesday.

And he has a powerful ally in his effort: Former President Donald Trump has endorsed a dozen of the candidates Paxton is backing, making good on his promise to punish those who voted against his longtime ally.

It’s turning an already chaotic primary season in Texas into yet another battleground in the Republican Party’s internal wars.

“What you’re seeing right now is a reflection of what is happening [in] national politics. You’ve seen Donald Trump jump into — I don’t even know how many — state rep races. Why is he getting involved that far down the ballot? Because it is a preservation of legacy,” said Matt Langston, a Republican strategist in Texas. “It’s ensuring if you’re on the wrong side that there’s a consequence to pay.”

Over the past week on social media, Trump fired off endorsement after endorsement for candidates supported by Paxton. He championed three judges Paxton backed for the Court of Criminal Appeals, which angered Paxton when it prevented him from prosecuting election fraud, and more than a dozen state legislative candidates.

Perhaps Paxton’s top target heading into Tuesday is state House Speaker Dade Phelan, who oversaw the state attorney general’s impeachment effort. Paxton and Trump are backing Phelan’s leading GOP primary challenger, David Covey.

“David Covey is running against Dade Phelan, the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, who led the Fraudulent Impeachment of the recently re-elected, in a landslide, Attorney General of Texas, Ken Paxton,” read one Trump post on Truth Social. “Any Republican backing Phelan is a fool, and should be disassociated from the Republican Party — that’s how bad Phelan is, especially on, Election Integrity!”

Trump Waco Texas

Covey’s ads in the final stretch of the primary race have heavily touted Trump’s endorsement. In addition to appearing on the campaign trail, Paxton has also appeared in some of Covey’s campaign spots.

“Dade has lost his way and is more beholden to the Democrats who elected him speaker than the people who elected him to fight for them,” Paxton said in  one of Covey’s ads .

Phelan responded to the attacks from Paxton and Trump head-on in a recent ad of his own.

“Vengeful Paxton is the reason Trump’s involving himself in our race. If Paxton will break an oath to his wife and God, why would he tell Trump — or you — the truth?” Phelan said, alluding to the details of Paxton’s extramarital affair that became public during the trial.

Paxton isn’t the only major figure whose political firepower is at play in Texas this season. GOP Gov. Greg Abbott has an endorsement list of his own, often differing from Paxton’s. He’s targeted a number of rural Republicans who voted against his school choice bill, while lending some political cover to the state House impeachment managers.

Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been active on the trail, too, including in defense of Phelan.

“I’ll be real honest with you. If you would have told me 10 years ago you’re gonna be in Beaumont, Texas, trying to referee a fighting Republican primary, I’d have been, ‘Really?’” Perry quipped at one event.

“This in-house fighting and all that kind of stuff, I don’t really understand frankly why it’s happening,” he continued. “I don’t know why I need to be in Beaumont, Texas, telling you that you will be absolutely out of your mind if you get rid of Dade Phelan. I mean, we’re gonna give y’all mental competency tests.”

The endorsements Paxton is issuing could also benefit him down the line if he seeks higher office. Between endorsements, he also frequently attacks U.S. Sen. Jon Cornyn of Texas, who is not facing re-election this year but supported Paxton’s impeachment, in social media posts.

Here are a few of the candidates Paxton has endorsed in the primary Tuesday:

  • State Rep. Travis Clardy, a Republican who voted against Paxton’s impeachment and has since sought to reform the impeachment process in the Texas House.
  • Mitch Little, one of Paxton’s impeachment lawyers who is running for a state House seat.
  • State Rep. Gary Gates, a Republican who voted to impeach Paxton but has since expressed regret at that vote.
  • Katrina Pierson, a former spokesperson for Trump’s campaign who is running for a state House seat.
  • Joshua Feuerstein, a conservative internet personality known for opposing same-sex marriage and abortion rights, said Paxton personally recruited him to challenge state Rep. Keith Bell, a Republican who voted for the state attorney general’s impeachment. Feuerstein spoke at the Jan. 6, 2021, rally at the U.S. Capitol, concluding his remarks with a fiery line: “It is time for war! Let us stop the steal!”

Music + concerts, music + concerts | madonna kicks off five-night celebration tour run in inglewood. yes, she was on time., the music icon's latest outing is a stunning affair that covers four decades of hits and controversy with ferocious flair..

the who tour running times

After what she describes as a “near-death experience” last summer, global music legend Madonna was finally able to launch her career-spanning Celebration Tour in October of last year .

The 65-year-old singer, songwriter and actress postponed the jaunt by a few months following a serious bacterial infection that she told the crowd during her first of five nights at Kia Forum in Inglewood on Monday, March 4 had left her in a medically-induced coma for 48 hours.

“My children are the reason I kept going, honestly,” she said. “I owe them a big thank you.”

Though some fans have been blasting Madonna for being “fashionably late” to her own shows on this outing — with a few even getting together to sue her and promoter Live Nation for her tardiness — she was on stage by 9:40 p.m. Monday night with a brood of incredible dancers that kicked things off with “Nothing Really Matters,” “Everybody” and “Into the Groove.” The Celebration Tour continues at Kia Forum on March 5, 7, 9 and 11 before heading to Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert on March 13.

Madonna (pictured performing on The Celebration Tour at Barclays Center...

“I’m about to tell you the story of my life,” she told the crowd before strapping on an electric guitar to play one of the first songs she ever learned on the instrument, “Burning Up.” You’ll have to actually go see the show to hear the story behind just how she learned to play guitar because I can’t repeat it here and, well, it’s better when Madonna tells it, or acts it out.

This tour truly is a jaw-dropping spectacle that has so many moving parts and memorable moments jam-packed into a two-and-a-half-hour program. Technically, she played 26 songs, but there were so many musical Easter eggs hidden throughout the show that were revealed within the multiple acts as remixes or snippets of other Madonna songs or covers. And her dancers are an eclectic group of humans that deliver unbelievably entertaining performances. They engage with the audience and compliment the Queen of Pop as she transitions from era to era via a myriad of elaborate costumes and they indulge both the boundary-pushing sexual content and bold activism that she’s unapologetically shared with the masses for decades.

It’s a family affair, too. Madonna’s son David Banda joined her on guitar for “Mother and Father” and daughter Mercy James played piano during “Bad Girl.” For “Vogue,” Madonna brings out a special guest each evening to help judge her dancers as they catwalk down the stage, showing off their best moves. Monday night’s guest was actor and TV show host Eric André , who bared his buns for a quick spanking with a riding crop before judging the eager contestants who were being hyped up by the evening’s emcee, Bob the Drag Queen.

The production and lighting for this tour is insane. The stage itself is massive and includes several pit areas for fans and a trio of catwalks for Madonna and her dancers to play. The main stage area houses a huge light ring and a ginormous disco ball, which got plenty of use during the evening. There was a spinning carousel-like chapel on stage for “Like a Prayer,” a huge video cube that Madonna laid upon for “Bedtime Story” and bright beams of light were used to make three boxing rings on the stage, where dancers were mock-fighting with glittery gloves during “Erotica” into “Justify My Love.” She also gives the fans in the higher sections a better view of herself as she steps into an illuminated frame that lifts her into the air and moves her out and across the arena.

Throughout the evening Madonna’s commentary was quirky and funny, but she made sure to sincerely thank the audience for continuing to show up and support her. Through the music and her words she shared what was important to her by paying tribute to artists such as Prince and Michael Jackson. Also causes that she’s passionate about, including LGBTQ+ rights and she paid homage to AIDS victims during the emotional “Live to Tell.”

Madonna herself was nonstop throughout the evening, dancing, singing and playfully joking around with her dancers and the crowd. “Hung Up” and “Ray of Light” became massive dance parties and “Express Yourself” and “Crazy For You” were just a wave of nostalgia.

As the show moved from decade to decade, Madonna brought out a person clad in fashion appropriate for that particular era, that was representative of herself. They became a symbol throughout the evening of this artist, this person, who shared both triumphs and heartbreak through song and dance.

During a video montage that rapidly went through the various media controversies surrounding Madonna throughout the years, it ended with Madonna expressing “the most controversial thing I’ve ever done is to stick around.”

Daily Briefing: 'The state of the union is strong'

the who tour running times

President Joe Biden called on Americans to look to "the future" and not return to the politics of his predecessor in a State of the Union address. Also in the news: International Women's Day calls for global efforts to support progress in gender equality. Should dogs be allowed to win Oscars?

🙋🏼‍♀️ I'm Nicole Fallert , Daily Briefing author.  Don't forget to spring your clocks forward this weekend !

Here is the news to know Friday.

A high-energy election year State of the Union address

President Joe Biden delivered a combative State of the Union address Thursday, targeting Donald Trump and launching a general election already guaranteed to be brutal. In the president's annual report to Congress , a defiant Biden declared that Americans now face a choice between democracy and despotism.

The president addressed a sweeping range of issues facing the nation and the world, from providing aid for Ukraine to expanding abortion rights. Overall, Biden told Americans from coast to coast that "The state of our union is strong and getting stronger.”

  • Biden repeatedly hit former President Donald Trump, whom he only referred to as his "predecessor."
  • Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., delivered the Republican response , slamming the president's handling of the economy, the southern border, crime and foreign policy, calling him a "dithering and diminished leader."
  • Biden embraced strong rhetoric about the Southern border, igniting a heated confrontation with Republicans involving the death of 22-year-old Georgia nursing student Laken Riley and referred to the Venezuelan man accused of killing her as an “illegal.”

International Women's Day comes amid global crisis and celebrations

Friday marks International Women's Day, an annual opportunity to celebrate the impact and influence of women on their communities around the world, and their predecessors who paved the way to progress. This year's IWD comes against a complex backdrop in the U.S., where American women's health, work and political power have been a major focus ahead of the 2024 presidential campaign. At last night's State of the Union, President Joe Biden warned not to underestimate women's ability to change America, saying: "those bragging about overturning Roe v. Wade have no clue about the power of women in America. They found out though when reproductive freedom was on the ballot and won in 2022, 2023, and they will find out again, in 2024." Read more

An emergency port on the Gaza coast would stem a hunger crisis

The U.S. is launching an emergency mission to establish a port on the Gaza coast that can receive large shipments of humanitarian aid, President Joe Biden announced in last night's State of the Union address. A "temporary pier in the Mediterranean on the Gaza coast" would accept ships carrying food, water, medicine and temporary shelters, increasing the region's intake ability of humanitarian resources. U.S. military personnel will assist from vessels offshore, but the operation is not expected to involve American troops on the ground in Gaza, he said. Read more

New legislation could be the most significant threat yet to TikTok, a wildly popular Chinese-owned app. A bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced the legislation this week that would give the app's owner ByteDance six months to sell off TikTok or face a ban in the United States. In a statement, TikTok decried the bill as an attack on the First Amendment and would "deprive 5 million small businesses of a platform they rely on to grow and create jobs." Read more

George Santos Says He’s Running for Congress Again

Mr. Santos, who was expelled from the House in December, filed paperwork to run in a different district held by Representative Nick LaLota, a Republican.

George Santos is greeted by Representative Lauren Boebert in the House chamber on Thursday.

By Grace Ashford and Michael Gold

Scarcely three months after he was expelled from the House of Representatives and bitterly swore his intent never to return, George Santos went back on his word and declared his intent to run again.

Mr. Santos made the announcement on Thursday evening after returning to Washington, where he made use of the lifetime floor privileges given to members of the House and attended the State of the Union address. And as he had done throughout his brief tenure on Capitol Hill, he attempted to seize the spotlight, posting the news on social media in the middle of President Biden’s speech.

The disgraced former representative, who was expelled from office after an overwhelming bipartisan vote and faces 23 felony counts in an unresolved criminal case, made his announcement on Thursday evening on social media. He said the decision had followed “a lot of prayer” and consultation with friends and family members.

George Santos Lost His Job. Here Are the Lies, Charges and Questions Left.

George Santos, who was expelled from Congress, has told so many stories they can be hard to keep straight. We cataloged them, including major questions about his personal finances and his campaign fund-raising and spending.

Mr. Santos will not run for his old seat, in Long Island and Queens, for which Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, recently won a special election . Instead, Mr. Santos said that he would attempt to unseat Representative Nick LaLota in New York’s First Congressional District, on Long Island’s eastern end.

Mr. Santos filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday designating a campaign committee and declaring his intent to challenge Mr. LaLota in the Republican primary in June.

“I have made several personal sacrifices in the name of serving the American people,” Mr. Santos wrote in a post on X.com that made only vague allusions to his historic expulsion from Congress. “My promise is that I will never back down because of my love for this country.”

Mr. Santos also made it clear that he would attempt to run to Mr. LaLota’s right, arguing that “New York hasn’t had a real conservative represent them since I left office arbitrarily,” a statement that misrepresents the circumstances under which he was expelled from Capitol Hill.

It was not clear if Mr. Santos intended to run a serious campaign; he will be hard-pressed to raise money from donors, and he has lost all standing among local Republican leaders and most voters.

His attention may also be divided: His criminal trial is scheduled for September, if plea discussions fail. And he has also suggested plans for involvement in a reality television show .

More than two-thirds of the House voted to expel Mr. Santos after a House Ethics Committee report concluded there was “substantial evidence” that Mr. Santos had broken federal laws and cast his political career as a grift he had used to enrich himself.

Mr. LaLota — who, like Mr. Santos, won election in 2022 — was one of the first Republicans in Congress to call for Mr. Santos to resign, just days after they both took office last year. He was one of the leaders of a group of New York Republicans who pushed their colleagues to expel Mr. Santos after he was indicted last May; the effort gained momentum after Mr. Santos was hit with even more charges in October.

Upon learning from a colleague that Mr. Santos would be challenging him, Mr. LaLota, who already has a substantial campaign war chest, was observed throwing his head back and laughing on the floor of the House.

“At first I thought it was a joke,” he said in an interview after the State of the Union. “I mean, I still think it’s half a joke. You never know with Santos what’s real and what’s not.”

John Avlon, a former CNN political analyst who is among several candidates contesting the Democratic primary, responded to the news with a simple statement: “Bring it on.”

Another Democratic hopeful, Nancy Goroff, said it “would be funny if it weren’t so serious to see George Santos and Nick LaLota fight to see who is more extreme.”

She added: “The reality is that both oppose a woman’s right to choose, have failed to lower costs for families and care more about publicity than getting things done for Long Island families. Not to mention that neither actually lives in the district.”

Mr. Santos is facing charges of money laundering, wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, as prosecutors have said that, among other things, he swindled donors, filed false campaign reports and collected unemployment when he was in fact employed. A report from the House Ethics Committee released last year found that he had also spent campaign funds on Botox, designer goods and a website known for explicit content.

Jesse Garcia, who leads the Suffolk County Republican Party, said that he was confident that voters had tired of Mr. Santos’s many foibles and falsehoods.

“I think that there is very little — little to no — appetite whatsoever for this comedy show to continue,” he said.

WST Dubai Street 2024: Vincent Milou tops men's quarter-final

In the baking heat of the desert sun, the French skater finished top of the pile for the second time this week to lead Olympic and world champions Horigome Yuto and Shirai Sora into the semi-final.

Top qualifier Vincent Milou showed his prowess once again as he topped the men's quarter-final at skateboarding 's WST Dubai Street 2024 event on Friday (8 March).

The Frenchman, who emerged as the top qualifier in the opening round on Wednesday , upgraded his first run score of 73.43 to 85.47 in his second run to secure pole position going into tomorrow's semifinal.

Finishing just behind Milou was a three-strong string of Japanese skaters fronted by Olympic champion Horigome Yuto (83.23) and Onodera Ginwoo (79.39), while newly crowned world champion Shirai Sora went through in 10th place.

The semi-finals, streaming live tomorrow on Olympics.com and on the official Olympics mobile app , will see a shift in format with the best trick section entering play.

After attempting two runs the skaters will then get five attempts to put down a ‘best trick’. The total score will be determined based on the best run score result combined with the best two trick scores.

According to the organisers, the weather conditions are expected to deteriorate overnight, potentially leading to a delay in the start of tomorrow's semifinals.
