2023 Asia Cruises
If Asia isn’t on your list of places to visit, it should be. This alluring continent is so dynamic—full of exciting contrasts that perfectly complement each other. From arid deserts to lush jungles. From towering mountains to awe-inspiring beaches. And that’s just the breathtaking natural beauty. These countries and cities are rich with mystical history, ancient cultures, mouthwatering cuisines, and other worldly architecture and art that will leave a lasting impression on you long after your vacation has ended. Asia is truly a world explorer’s dream destination— and we’re ready to take you there and share the best Asia has to offer.
We’re taking our luxury vacations in Asia to exciting new levels by visiting even more countries and cities during our 2023-24 season than the season before. Our new Asia itineraries include popular places we’ve never been before, as well as two new home ports for us, Mumbai, India and Benoa, Bali, Indonesia. Other new ports include Celukan Bawang, Bali, Indonesia, the bustling gateway port that invites you to discover the wonders of the northern island of the Indonesian archipelago, and Hambantota, Sri Lanka, a once sleepy town that quickly transformed into a bustling, urban hub. We’re also returning to some incredible places we haven’t visited in more than five years, such as Benoa, Bali, Indonesia; Lombok, Indonesia; and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. So, even if you have visited Asia with us, there are so many opportunities to see even more on our 2023-24 sailings.
Our new sailings also offer more overnight stays—in fact, we’ve more than doubled the number (more than 45 in all), to give you even more opportunities to experience the nightlife in some of the most exciting cities in the world, including Bangkok, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Kyoto, Singapore, and so many more.
We’ve added three new itineraries as well: 12-Night Northeast Asia sailings, 12-Night Bali, Malaysia, & Thailand sailings, and 12-Night Spice Route sailings. Our Spice Route itineraries follow a diverse portion of this historical path from Mumbai to Singapore—or vice versa. With such a wide variety of itineraries to choose from on two stunning ships, you’re sure to find the perfect vacation that will take you to the places you’ve always wanted to explore in this captivating corner of the world—and beyond.
The 2023-24 Asia sailings are open for booking now. No matter which itinerary you choose, you’ll discover the allure of the far east on a luxury vacation filled with wonder.
Itineraries
Celukan, bali, indonesia.
The bustling city of Celukan Bawang is an important trading port for the island of Bali and the gateway to exploring the northern islands of this tropical paradise. Anchored in the harbor, traditional Bugis schooners are a stark contrast to the luxury cruise ship that brought you there. Here you’ll find the locals are as warm and inviting as the black volcanic beaches along the coast. Exploring the islands, you’ll discover historical signs of Dutch colonization, you’ll marvel at the intriguing architecture of ancient Balinese temples, and you’ll get a taste of village life. If it’s wildlife you’re looking for, you’ll enjoy the Bali Barat National Park or a snorkeling trip to discover some incredible underwater wildlife.
Hambantota, Sri Lanka
Located at the southern end of the island nation, Sri Lanka, Hambantota was a small, under developed town less than two decades ago. The government transformed the small town into a bustling city after it was damaged by a tsunami in 2004. Now this urban hub with luxury hotels and modern conveniences attracts travelers from around the world. The city offers something for everyone—from exploring the natural beauty and diverse wildlife in the national parks and gardens to discovering the diverse history and religious influences of the region by visiting the modern museums and ancient temples. This once sleepy town has quickly become one of the must-see places in Asia.

Tribute to Tokyo
Only icons can truly encapsulate a metropolis as big and bold as Tokyo, especially ones that represent the capital’s extraordinary diversity. For a historical perspective, the 7th-century Sensoji Temple and the National Museum of Nature and Science speak volumes. The Imperial Palace bridges the past and present, as samurai warriors lived in the castle that once stood where Japan’s imperial family now resides. The ultimate view of the city and Mt. Fuji in the distance is from atop Tokyo Tower, a symbol of Japan’s rebirth as an economic powerhouse.
- 3 nights in Tokyo
- Visit Sensoji Temple and nearby Nakamise-dori, an alley lined with one-of-a-kind shops
- View of Imperial Palace and its Eyeglass Bridge from the palace plaza
- See Mt. Fuji and the city from atop Tokyo Tower

Prepare to be captivated by the wonders of Singapore, a city-state that rapidly transitioned from a British trading post into an ultra-modern destination. Its multicultural past comes to life in the traditional temples and synagogues on Waterloo Street and in Chinatown’s bewitching maze of narrow roads. Cruising the Singapore River presents yet another perspective of the metropolis while sustainably powered Gardens by the Bay celebrates the bullish future. What better wrap-up than toasting the experience with a Singapore Sling in the legendary Raffles Hotel.
- 3 nights in Singapore
- Exploring attractions such as Chinatown; Gardens by the Bay; Merlion Park; and the colonial district
- A riverboat cruise on the Singapore River
- Panoramic view from atop the Marina Bay Sands hotel

Terracotta Warriors, from Hong Kong
What an extraordinary contrast – one free evening in ultra-modern Hong Kong juxtaposed against historical Xian, a city often hailed as the birthplace of Chinese civilization. The Terracotta Warriors Museum offers the ultimate deep dive into Xian’s past, as its thousands of life-size clay figures reveal life under the first Qin emperor. Exploring the Grand Mosque and the intriguingly named Blue Wild Goose Pagoda adds cultural context from other time periods. Even the Tang Dynasty dinner performance is rooted in history by featuring ancient music and poetry.
- 1 night in Hong Kong
- 2 nights in Xian
- Economy-class flights between Hong Kong and Xian
- Browsing the Terracotta Warriors Museum; Grand Mosque; and Blue Wild Goose Pagoda

Come away with a genuine feel for Thailand’s capital after becoming immersed in the captivating culture. Zip through the old city in a 3-wheeled tuk-tuk. Observe vibrant canal life by cruising the meandering Chao Phaya River and stroll the fragrant Pak Klong Talat flower market. No stone is left unturned as you explore Buddhist temples, Bangkok’s 200-year-old Chinatown and browse lavish longboats in the Royal Barge Museum. The Jim Thompson House reveals the life of the American that revitalized the Thai silk industry before mysteriously disappearing.

Top Asia FAQs
When’s the best time to cruise to Asia?
We offer a wide variety of Asia itineraries with our revolutionized Celebrity Solstice ship sailing during the winter and Celebrity Millenium year round. Each region of Asia offers different experiences guests can enjoy.
The winter months, from November to February, are the ideal time to explore South Asia, including India and Sri Lanka, when the climate is less humid, giving you more energy for sightseeing.
Countries like South Korea and Japan are delightful all through the summer months and have perfect weather to lounge by their spectacular beaches.
The Lunar New Year usually falls in February, and this is a fantastic time to be in Asia, with widespread celebrations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam.
Is a cruise a good way to see Asia?
A cruise is the perfect way to see Asia. You’re able to visit multiple places in comfort, with no effort required on your part to get from one to the other. A Celebrity Asian cruise vacation takes you to some of the most exciting destinations in the world, from Japan and Hong Kong, to the island paradise of Bali. As an example, in the space of just 12 nights, you could visit exciting cities like Singapore, to off-the-beaten path destinations in Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.
A 12-night Japan itinerary takes you to six contrasting destinations in Japan itself, as well as Busan in South Korea. You could also choose a 14-night itinerary from Singapore to Mumbai, which follows the coast of Malaysia, crosses the Indian Ocean, and then explores Sri Lanka and three ports in India.
Many of our itineraries include overnight stops in destinations including Hong Kong, Bangkok, Hanoi, Phuket and more, giving you time to experience local night markets and restaurants.
Where do Asia cruises depart from?
Celebrity offers a wide choice of cruises in Asia. Departure ports include Bali, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mumbai, and Tokyo.
Do I need visas to visit each country?
It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here .
The majority of Asian nations do not require a visa for entry, but some do. To visit India, for example, you will need to get a visa before you leave home.
What are the main ports of call on an Asian cruise?
Any cruise to Asia is packed with exciting ports, from vibrant cities to blissful beach locations on islands including Langkawi, Ko Samui, and Phuket.
To many, the real marquee ports are the cities like Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Mumbai, Tokyo, and Ho Chi Minh City. But often, it’s the places in between that leave just as great an impression, whether you’re exploring an exquisite temple in Kyoto or cruising the serene backwaters of Cochin on a rice barge.
What’s best about an Asia cruise with Celebrity is that our ships stay overnight in many ports, so you can really get to know a destination. In Hanoi, for example, you can enjoy the buzz of the city and spend a day sailing beautiful Halong Bay. In Bangkok, there’s time to see the shimmering Grand Palace as well as take a river cruise and browse colorful floating markets.
Are there any vaccination or health requirements?
There are no compulsory vaccinations to visit Asian countries, but it is recommended to be up to date with all your regular inoculations, including tetanus and hepatitis A. It’s important to consult your physician in advance to plan a vaccination schedule.
Celebrity’s Asian itineraries do not visit ports where malaria is known to be a high risk, so it is unlikely that you will need anti-malarial drugs—but again, check with your physician or travel health clinic in advance as everybody’s situation is different.
How do I handle currency exchange for the different countries visited?
Most places in Southeast Asia and Japan take credit cards, but you will need a small amount of local currency to shop in markets or buy souvenirs from vendors. For India, rural areas still have a cash economy, so you will need some rupees outside of the main urban areas.
While enthusiastic souvenir vendors may offer to take U.S. dollars, you will not get a good exchange rate, and you will be given change in local currency. If you choose to pay this way, make sure you know the exchange rate and what denominations local notes come in.
If you use an ATM on your travels, it’s safer to use one that’s attached to a reputable bank.
What languages are commonly spoken, and will I need a translator or phrasebook?
Dozens of different languages are spoken across Asia; India alone has 22 official languages. While it’s polite to offer a greeting in the local language, and helpful to know a few phrases, it’s not necessary to be fluent.
You will not need a translator on your travels in Asia. All guides on shore excursions speak English. A lot of signage is in English as well as the local language, especially in tourist areas. In many countries, such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and India, English is an official language, and in many others, it is taught in school as a second language.
What cultural and historical sites can I expect to see on excursions?
Our wide range of excursions takes you to all the main cultural sites in the ports we visit. You can explore historic George Town from Penang, and take in the buzz and bustle of Hong Kong’s various night markets on an after-dark tour.
See the temple of the Emerald Buddha in Bangkok and visit the poignant Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima. Learn about Buddhism with a monk in Colombo, and explore the dazzling imperial city of Hue from Chan May, Vietnam.
Are there specific cultural norms or etiquette I should be aware of?
It’s a good idea to take a little time to understand the culture of the Asian countries you are visiting. Generally speaking, extreme politeness is important, as is taking the time to greet people, and remaining softly spoken.
Many Asian countries are Buddhist, in which case, always show respect to Buddha statues and temples and do not touch Buddhist monks. Do not point at people and do not be surprised if a local avoids eye contact during a conversation; this is a sign of respect. In Thailand, it is an offense to say anything negative about the royal family.
Try to understand the sense of “face” that is prevalent in Asian countries. Saving face is important; so, for example, a person may tell you what they think you want to hear rather than the reality, to avoid losing face. Shouting at someone causes you to lose face.
Japan in particular is a country with a complex social etiquette. Just a few include not tipping (it’s just not done here); never blowing your nose in public; taking off your shoes before entering a temple; and not blocking busy sidewalks in the densely populated cities.
If you’re visiting somewhere on a tour where specific etiquette is expected, your guide will point out all you need to know.

Things to Do on a Cruise to Asia
The lands of China, Japan and Korea all have an air of mystery to most Americans. This is because for many years travel was restricted (or even forbidden), so Asian culture is still filled with mystery – and in many instances hasn’t been overwritten by modern technology and trends. That’s not to say that Asia is stuck in a time warp, because with one trip to Tokyo you’ll feel like you’ve been catapulted into the future. Outlined below are some of the top things to do when cruising to Asia and the Far East:
- Take a stroll along the Great Wall of China. The wall was built in several pieces over time, but connected throughout the centuries. Though it’s not really visible from space, it’s still an incredibly large landmark at over 5,000 miles long.
- Attend a Sumo wrestler tournament in Japan. This traditional Japanese sport has many customs attached to it, and you’ll be surprised at how exhilarating the matches can be.
- The Forbidden City is the palace complex that was home to China’s emperors from 1420 to 1912. There are a number of exciting artifacts here, so take a tour to get better insight into China’s past.
- Celebrate with a drink and some karaoke. Japan is the birthplace of this beloved pastime that has been adopted the world over. In Japan, most karaoke is done in a small room with just your friends.
- Head to Chengdu where the giant panda’s live. You can learn all about these adorable creatures at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base.
- Take a fun trip to the Korean Folk Village just outside of Seoul where you can see what life was like centuries ago in Korea and discover the crafts and skills for which Korea and its people are known.

2 Americans believed dead after escapees apparently hijack yacht, Grenada police say
By Caitlin O'Kane
February 23, 2024 / 12:15 PM EST / CBS News
Three escaped inmates in Grenada may have stolen a yacht and killed two passengers on the boat who are believed to be American citizens, the Royal Grenada Police Force said on Thursday. The three men escaped custody on Sunday and police believe they made their way to nearby St. Vincent on a stolen boat, according to a news release the force shared on Facebook.
The three men — identified as Ron Mitchell, 30, Trevon Robertson, 19, and Abita Stanislaus, 25 — were initially arrested in December and charged jointly with one count of robbery with violence. Mitchell also faced separate charges of one count of rape, three counts of attempted rape, two counts of indecent assault and causing harm.
They were being held at the South St. George Police Station on the small Caribbean island when they escaped. As law enforcement from Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines searched for them, evidence suggested they got on a yacht docked in St. George, officials said.
The Royal Grenada Police Force "is currently working on leads that suggest that the two occupants of the yacht may have been killed in the process," the force wrote on Facebook. "It is believed that the occupants of the yacht were American citizens."
The investigation is in its early stages and a team of senior investigators and a forensic specialist has been sent to St. Vincent, the force said.
In a separate incident, police said another suspect escaped while attending court on Wednesday and is on the run. The fugitive, identified as Levon Date, is charged in the 2023 killing of Canadian citizen Wayne Smart.
CBS News has reached out to the Royal Grenada Police Force for more information.

What to Know About Anant Ambani’s Star-Studded Indian Billionaire Pre-Wedding
A s big fat Indian weddings go, Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani knows how to take it to the next level. This weekend, the billionaire tycoon is hosting pre-wedding festivities for his son, 28-year-old Anant Ambani, in what promises to be a lavish affair with no expense spared. The younger Ambani is set to marry his childhood sweetheart Radhika Merchant, the 29-year-old daughter of another Indian billionaire, Viren Merchant.
While the wedding itself won’t take place until July, a three-day pre-wedding bash kicks off on Friday, Mar. 1 in the family’s refinery township of Jamnagar in the Indian state of Gujarat. Some of the biggest players from Wall Street, Silicon Valley, and the entertainment industry are on the guest list.
That includes a performance by global superstar Rihanna, whose touchdown in India on Feb. 29 broke the internet after pictures of her colossal luggage began circulating online. The star-studded guest list of 1,200 also includes Bill Gates, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Blackrock co-founder Larry Fink, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, former Canadian PM Stephen Harper, former Australian PM Kevin Rudd, and Ivanka Trump. Fellow Indian billionaires Gautam Adani and Kumar Mangalam Birla are also expected to be there, along with a slate of Indian cricketers and Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.
The CEO of Disney Bob Iger is also likely to attend after the elder Ambani, who is the chairman of Fortune 500 company Reliance Industries, announced an $8.5 billion merger with Disney over its India media assets earlier this week. The deal will likely transform the country’s television and streaming services by cementing the company’s dominance in one of the world’s fastest-growing entertainment markets.
Indians have been transfixed by the details of the opulent pre-wedding celebrations, taking place in a 3,000-acre garden with a mango orchard in the Ambanis’ home estate. Along with Rihanna, the event will also feature a performance by American illusionist David Blaine. According to a Reuters report, guests have been given directions to don “jungle fever” outfits for a glitzy cocktail party. There are visits to the Ambanis’ animal rescue center. There’s also a lavish gala with over 2,500 dishes cooked by a team of 65 chefs. Guests have been offered hair styling, make-up, and saree draping services, as well as return charter jet flights from New Delhi and Mumbai.
Mukesh Ambani’s estimated net worth of $111 billion on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index makes him, at present, the richest person in Asia and the 11th richest person in the world. The 66-year-old tycoon runs the Reliance conglomerate founded by his father, Dhirubhai Ambani, with businesses ranging from petroleum refining to retail, telecommunications, food, and digital streaming services. His family includes his wife Nita and three children who will be the heirs to his $243-billion empire. In the last few years, Ambani has been busy orchestrating a succession plan with 31-year-old twins Isha and Akash, as well as the groom-to-be, who joined the Reliance board last August.
Anant Ambani is currently a director at Reliance's new energy business and the Reliance Foundation. Last January, he was engaged to Merchant, who also serves on the board of her father’s pharmaceutical firm Encore, in a traditional ceremony at the grand Ambani residence of Antilia in Mumbai. The Ambanis’ 27-storey high home has previously drawn global attention for being the most expensive property in the world at the time it was built.
India’s luxury wedding market sees Indians spending over $75 billion on weddings every year, attracting celebrities, fashion designers, and entertainment influencers. But few are akin to the affairs thrown by the Ambanis, who in 2018 made headlines for the most expensive Indian wedding at a reported cost of almost $100 million. The extravaganza, thrown for Ambani’s daughter Isha, was spread across Lake Como, Mumbai, and Udaipur. Superstar Beyoncé performed at the sangeet (a musical evening that typically precedes the wedding), while former U.S. Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton and John Kerry were in attendance.

The 9 best northern lights alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.
Consider one of these trips for a chance to see this mesmerizing natural wonder.
The Best Northern Lights Alaska Cruises
Getty Images
There's no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon – when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky – is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.
Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis – especially locations in the Interior and Arctic regions, such as Coldfoot, Wiseman, Utqiagvik (Barrow) and Nome. Fairbanks is regarded as a top location due to its position directly under the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area in the far north where aurora activity is generally concentrated. The Southcentral region of Alaska, where you'll find Anchorage, Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, also offers basecamps for northern lights viewing.
If you're hoping to see the magic aboard an Alaska cruise in 2024 or 2025, then you just might be in luck. Experts predict the next few seasons will be particularly good for northern lights sightings, due to increased solar activity. While seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed, your best chance of seeing them is during these high-activity solar cycles, which occur about every 11 years.
Find your perfect cruise
When to take a cruise to view the northern lights
The Alaska cruise season falls between May and September, with a few cruise lines extending the season from April to October.
Holland America Line recommends booking a cruise or cruisetour (a combined sea and land package) during the autumnal equinox, or the official start of autumn, which falls around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are more likely around the autumn and spring equinoxes, which could increase your chances of seeing the aurora. For the best views, Holland America advises heading to higher ground in Anchorage , to vantage points like Glen Alps, the Knit River Valley and Point Woronzof.
Princess Cruises also suggests booking your vacation in the fall. September is an ideal month to watch for the spectacle in the sky as the nights start getting longer and darker. The elusive display is most likely to appear on crystal-clear evenings between midnight and 4 a.m. While you can see incredible light shows in Anchorage, consider an extended tour of Fairbanks or the Interior that takes you away from light pollution (such as to Denali National Park & Preserve).
U.S. News has compiled a list of the nine best cruises and cruisetours to give you the optimal chance of viewing these whimsical lights in the sky, with a focus on sailings around the autumnal equinox in 2024 and later dates in September 2025. We've also included an early sailing in April, before the end of the aurora season. (Keep in mind: Many of these trips and itineraries are also available on other dates during the season. Cruise fares were accurate at the time of publication.)

9-Day Denali: Tour D8l
This nine-day land and sea tour on Nieuw Amsterdam includes an opportunity to search for the northern lights in Fairbanks, one of the best places to see them in Alaska (and in the world). Holland America offers a four-hour aurora borealis viewing tour outside the city in a yurt; it operates between the last week of August and mid-September.
If you'd like more options, there's no shortage of tour operators in town that can take you on a northern lights adventure in Fairbanks. You can even fly into town early to stay in the wilderness in an igloo with clear views of the night sky at Borealis Basecamp, located less than 30 miles from Fairbanks. Be sure to notify your hotel that you'd like a wake-up call or a knock on the door if the northern lights are on display.
You'll have more opportunities to see the aurora when you head to Denali National Park & Preserve for a stay at Holland America 's exclusive 60-acre McKinley Chalet Resort, located near the entrance to the park. After a full day exploring the park by ATV or a bucket list flightseeing adventure over Denali, you'll have another chance to see the colorful light display in Alaska's wilderness after midnight. The rest of the cruisetour itinerary includes scenic cruising days, with one spent in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. You'll also call on Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan before disembarking in Vancouver .
14-Day Denali: Tour D3c
This 14-day adventure includes scenic cruising of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord, with stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Seward. You'll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you'll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities.
With the extra time in town, plan to book the Arctic Circle Air Adventure with Northern Alaska Tour Company. This unforgettable journey takes you on a flight over the Yukon River and Brooks Range, just east of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. You'll then land 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the community of Coldfoot and receive an Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate before your return flight to Fairbanks.
7-Day Glacier Discovery Northbound
If you're interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary includes three scenic cruising days, with one day in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, and calls on the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before disembarking in Whittier, which sits roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage.
From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights.

11-Day Denali Explorer – Tour DA4
This 11-day cruisetour begins with a seven-night voyage embarking from Vancouver on Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The itinerary includes three sea days, two of which are dedicated to scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord. You'll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line's direct-to-the-wilderness rail service.
Spending three nights at the lodge – located just outside the entrance to the park – in mid-September will offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing. Keep your fingers crossed for high solar activity and clear, dark skies. Throughout your trip, learn photography tips to capture the mesmerizing display through Princess' North to Alaska Program. After your stay in Denali, you'll take a motor coach to Anchorage and stay overnight in a hotel there to finish up your voyage.
10-Day On Your Own – Tour BBX
The 10-Day On Your Own cruisetour with Princess Cruises begins with three nights on land, including overnights in Fairbanks, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. While at the Mt. McKinley resort, be sure to check out the lodge's treehouse. Designed by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," this vantage point offers impressive views of Denali – the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level.
Before heading off to bed, get an update on aurora activity from the tracker on your smartphone, especially if you have clear skies that night; the app My Aurora Forecast & Alerts has excellent reviews. Request a wake-up call to have the Princess lodge staff call your room if the dazzling bands of light begin to dance in the sky. The next day, after traveling to Whittier by motor coach, you'll embark on your cruise to Vancouver aboard Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess.
The voyage from Whittier includes three sea days for relaxing activities on board the ship, with two days of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier and in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. During your time in Glacier Bay, park rangers will board the ship to offer commentary about this captivating wilderness area's pristine glaciers and abundant wildlife. Younger cruisers and teens will also appreciate learning about this spectacular place through the Junior Ranger program, which features interactive games, activities and presentations. (All cruise ships visiting the park participate in this program with the National Park Service.) Ports of call for the rest of the journey include Icy Strait Point or Skagway (depending on the cruise), then Juneau and Ketchikan. The voyage ends in Vancouver.

The Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour
Celebrity's pre-cruise national parks adventure takes guests on a wildlife viewing quest to destinations in the north and the Interior where you can watch for the aurora. The 12-night trip begins in Fairbanks with a free day to explore.
Consider a trip to the University of Alaska Museum of the North, which features exhibits on Arctic dinosaurs, diverse wildlife, Alaska Native cultures and 2,000 years of Alaska art. You could also visit the impressive collection of antique cars and clothing at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, or take a walk with the reindeer into the woods at Running Reindeer Ranch. The second day in town includes a Riverboat Discovery ride and a tour of the city, as part of the cruisetour.
On the third day, you'll board the Wilderness Express (a glass-domed railcar) for the ride to Denali. Then, you'll embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in search of the park's grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Be sure to put your name on the list before bedtime to get a wake-up call for aurora activity. You'll also have one evening in Anchorage, where you can arrange for a northern lights tour, and one night in Seward before setting sail on Celebrity Summit the next morning. Highlights of the voyage include cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage as well as stopping in Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. You'll disembark in Vancouver.
Courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line
13-Day Denali Explorer – Pre-Cruise Cruisetour
Norwegian Cruise Line's six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you'll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher's kennel. You'll also have plenty of time in Denali National Park to book a flightseeing tour, go whitewater rafting, or take a hike with a park ranger to look for bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves and other local wildlife before starting your cruise in Seattle .
Norwegian Encore will call on Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska. The Mill at Ward Cove near Ketchikan is a newly built cruise ship port that serves as a jumping-off point for outdoor activities in the Tongass National Forest, from hiking and biking to kayaking and sea cycling. You can even pick up souvenirs, grab a bite to eat and sample a cold Alaska brew at the mill. The cruise itinerary also includes one day at sea and a stop in Victoria, British Columbia, before you disembark in Seattle.
7-Night Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan
Consider this seven-day cruise on Norwegian Bliss if you prefer to travel early in the spring and take your chances at catching the northern lights toward the end of aurora season, which falls around April 21. This round-trip itinerary from Seattle is one of the earliest sailings of the year to visit the Great Land and features two sea days, with one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. You'll also visit Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan (Ward Cove) and Victoria before disembarking in Seattle.
Juneau will offer one of the best opportunities during the cruise for seeing the northern lights, although chances are dependent on the weather and solar activity. There are several apps and websites with real-time updates for aurora tracking, including My Aurora Forecast & Alerts. If the skies are clear in the evening and the forecast looks promising, ask guest relations if there's a sign-up sheet to get a call or a knock on the door in the event of aurora activity.

12 Night Mountain Panorama Adventure Cruisetour 5B (Pre Tour)
This 12-night cruisetour with Royal Caribbean International begins with an overnight in Anchorage before boarding the Wilderness Express, where you'll have a glass-domed rail car for the journey to Talkeetna. The quirky community of Talkeetna is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Alaska town of Cicely in the 1990s show "Northern Exposure." It's also an excellent base for chasing the aurora – especially at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where you'll be staying.
After an overnight at the lodge, your tour moves on to Denali, where you can search for wildlife by day and look for the aurora at night. Another evening on land at Hotel Alyeska in the remote town of Girdwood affords more opportunities to chase the finnicky lights before heading to Seward to board your ship, Radiance of the Seas .
Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver. While there are plenty of activities, dining venues, bars and lounges on board to keep you entertained all night long, be sure to save up enough energy to wake up in the middle of the night should you get a call to see the magical natural wonder that is the northern lights.

PORT LOUIS (Reuters) -Mauritius stopped a ship belonging to Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings from docking at its ports due to what it said was a health risk and took samples from about 15 passengers who were in isolation on board, its port authority said on Sunday.
The Norwegian Dawn had been scheduled to dock in Port Louis on Sunday, but since it had not gone to Reunion Island, it arrived in Port Louis a day earlier, the Mauritius Ports Authority said in a statement.
"The decision not to allow the cruise ship access to the quay was taken in order to avoid any health risks," the authority said.
"The health and safety of passengers as well as that of the country as a whole are of the utmost to the authorities," it added, without giving any details about the nature of the health risk.
A spokesperson for the U.S.-headquartered Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that during the ship's trip to South Africa on Feb. 13, some passengers had experienced mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness.

Once in Port Louis, the ship's management worked with Mauritian authorities to make sure precautions were in place and all on board were okay, the spokesperson said.
The port authority said its test results would be known in 48 hours.
Officials at Mauritius' health ministry were not immediately reachable for comment.
The ship has 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members. Of these, about 2,000 passengers would have disembarked in Port Louis after completing their cruise while another 2,279 new passengers had been expected to board the ship, the port authority said.
"Passengers who were due to board the 'Norwegian Dawn' and begin their cruise from Mauritius today will not be able to do so due to potential health risks," it said.
Those who were disembarking or joining the cruise will now do so on Feb. 27, the Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson said.
Tourism is one of the major drivers of Mauritius' economy.

Utility solar dethrones coal as the cheapest power source in Asia
Renewable energy costs in Asia last year were 13% cheaper than coal and are expected to be 32% cheaper by 2030, according to a new study.
Source: Wood Mackenzie Asia Pacific Power & Renewable Services
According to Wood Mackenzie’s latest analysis of the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for the Asia Pacific (APAC) region, the LCOE from renewables reached a historic low in 2023. This is significant because it marks a shift toward making renewables increasingly competitive with coal, a mainstay in APAC’s energy mix. The driving force behind this trend is the substantial reduction in capital costs for renewable energy projects.
China leads the pack with a 40-70% cost reduction in utility-scale solar, onshore wind, and offshore wind compared to other Asia Pacific markets. China is expected to maintain a 50% cost advantage in renewable energy up to 2050.
Solar is cheapest and falling
The significant drop in solar power costs, by 23% in 2023, signals the end of supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures. As a result, utility solar is now the cheapest power source in 11 out of 15 APAC countries. New-build solar project costs are expected to fall by another 20% by 2030 due to lower module prices and an oversupply from China.
This drop in solar costs, particularly in 2023-24, puts pressure on coal and gas and highlights a 23% decrease in LCOE for utility PV across the Asia Pacific, driven by a 29% decline in capital costs.
Distributed solar, such as residential rooftop solar, saw a 26% decrease in 2023. This makes distributed solar 12% cheaper on average than residential power prices, unlocking substantial potential for rooftop solar.
Distributed solar is becoming increasingly enticing for customers in many Asia Pacific markets, with costs now 30% below rising residential tariffs in countries like China and Australia. However, markets with subsidized residential power tariffs, such as India, might have to wait until 2030 or later to see competitive prices for distributed solar.
Wind power isn’t far behind
While solar is surging ahead in terms of cost-effectiveness, onshore wind isn’t far behind despite costs being 38% more than solar in 2023. With a forecasted 30% cost reduction by 2030 as cheaper Chinese turbines gain market share, Australia and Southeast Asia stand to benefit from low-cost wind power equipment imports.
However, there will be less of an impact on markets with limited uptake of Chinese turbines such as Japan and South Korea, which focus more on domestic supply chains.
WoodMac also underscores the growing competitiveness of offshore wind with fossil fuels in APAC. With an 11% cost reduction in 2023, offshore wind costs are now competitive with coal along China’s coast and are expected to undercut gas in Japan and the Taiwan region by 2027 and 2028, respectively. Falling capital costs and tech improvements are opening up new markets for offshore wind in India, Southeast Asia, and Australia over the next five to 10 years.
In contrast with falling renewables costs, coal and gas generation expenses have increased by 12% since 2020 and are projected to rise through 2050, primarily due to carbon pricing mechanisms.
While developed APAC markets anticipate a significant hike in carbon prices, reaching US$20-55/tonne by 2030, Southeast Asia and India are expected to see lower carbon prices.
This trend suggests that gas power, with costs remaining above US$100/MWh on average until 2050, will gradually lose its cost competitiveness with offshore wind over the next decade.
Alex Whitworth, vice president, head of Asia Pacific Power Research at Wood Mackenzie, concluded:
Solar power costs have reached an historic low in the Asia Pacific region in 2023, reversing fears of permanent cost inflation. But while low costs support a continued boom in renewables investments, there is concern among investors on profitability, grid integration, backup, and energy storage. Government policies will play a crucial role going forward to support upgrading grid reliability, transmission capacity, and promoting battery storage to manage the intermittent nature of renewables.
