The 11 Most Amazing Greek Islands to Visit from Crete

greek islands to visit from Crete

Although it’s the farthest south of all the places in the home of tzatziki and moussaka, there are actually oodles of Greek islands to visit from Crete . That’s largely down to the fact that it’s pretty big – 600,000 people live here permanently. But it’s also because Crete is a major tourist draw, with thousands of people looking to string together island-hopping trips that include its stunning bays, rustic towns, and ancient monuments.

This guide lists a full 11 potential isles that you can get to from the old home of the Minoan civilization. Some will be just a stone’s throw offshore, so you can do them before a night out on the Malia Strip or an evening of dakos in Chania. Others will be further afield, requiring a ferry from the port at Heraklion to take you north into the heart of the Aegean Sea.

The good news is that there’s a whole variety of different Greek islands to visit from Crete. They could be small and totally unknown, offering glimpses of strange castles come leper colonies. Or, they might be buzzing vacation hotspots, with award-winning beaches, pumping nightlife, and deluxe villas studding their hills. Let’s go…

Table of Contents

Mirabello Gulf

Tiny little Pseira rises from the heart of the Gulf of Mirabello, just off the coast of Mochlos town in eastern Crete. However, it’s not quite the same as the beach-heavy resort towns of the region that surrounds it. Instead of sunbathing and snorkeling, this one’s known for its rich Minoan history.

According to the Penn Museum, the isle was once home to “a prosperous village with over 80 buildings at its greatest size”. It’s thought to have been inhabited since sometime in the fourth millennium BC until sometime around 1,500 BC. That means humans may well have been living on Pseira as long as 6,000 years ago!

The island was first excavated by American archaeologist Richard Seager back in 1907. He discovered the remnants of an old harbor on the south coast. Visitors today can see uncovered rough-stone buildings there, clustering above natural ports for ancient fishing boats.

The real challenge will be getting to Pseira. There are no regular commercial ferries heading across from the main island of Crete. We’d say the best way to go is on a guided sea kayaking tour . It won’t be easy – the crossing is over two miles against strong north winds. But the reward is a glimpse at the primeval island without the crowds!

Sunrise over Dia

According to Greek myth, a colossal lizard once attacked the island of Crete, forcing Zeus to turn it into Dia. It seems fitting, then, that the island is home to many creatures. In fact, it’s down to its unique biodiversity that this island is now a part of the Natura 2000 , the European protection scheme for outstanding areas.

So, what is there to see? From the Iberian rabbit ( oryctolagus ) to the mightily winged Eleonora’s falcon, there are oodles on the land and in the air. Then you get the rich marine life . That includes groups of charming Mediterranean monk seals, along with regular sea turtles to boot.

Most people choose to visit Dia as part of a dedicated snorkeling or scuba diving trip. They leave daily throughout the high season months from the Cretan capital of Heraklion. Taking five hours in all, they spend most of their time exploring the clear blue waters that surround Dia.

Eastern Crete islands

Mochlos is the name for both a village and an islet, which you’ll find right on the cusp of the Mirabello Gulf some 22 miles east of Agios Nikolaos. The island was once a part of Crete, but a destructive earthquake in ancient times severed its land link, leaving a 200-meter strait of clear Aegean water between coast and coast.

Like Pseira before it, Mochlos is famed for its deep and rich history. Many of the treasures were unearthed in the early 20 th century by the prolific American Archaeologist R. B. Seager. He found the traces of an entire Minoan town, resplendent golden jewelry, antique vases – the list goes on. Today, only the much-more-modern white chapel of Saint Nicholas still stands but visitors can come to see the ruins of the older houses and tombs.

There are regular boats linking Crete to Mochlos island. They take around five minutes in all. We’d say be sure to take some time to explore the village of Mochlos, too. It’s a charming and off-the-beaten-path location with tavernas that open onto pebble coves serving grill-sizzled octopus straight off the boat.

Spinalonga

You can freely hop to the isle of Spinalonga on any number of regular taxi boats from the villages of Plaka, Elounda and Agios Nikolaos in the northeast. What awaits is one of the most immersive Greek islands to visit from Crete, hands down…

Topped by a centuries-old citadel, the isle has been a leper colony and a salt farm in its long life. Today, it’s completely deserted, offering a glimpse into a haunting past, not to mention some seriously stunning pebble coves.

The main thing you’ll notice is the soaring tower of the Spinalonga Fortress. It’s now under consideration to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Its history reaches back to the 16 th century and the Venetian rule of Crete, although the Ottomans conquered the castle after a hard-fought siege in the 1700s.

Most of your day on Spinalonga will be about exploring the old turrets and bulwarks of the fortaleza. But you can also delve into the intriguing collections of the Museum of Spinalonga or seek out the small coves that dot the shoreline (though swimming’s not a great idea because of the strong northerly currents).

Karpathos

A rare ferry link in the summer connects the port of Heraklion to the long, finger-like isle of Karpathos. It’s a member of the Dodecanese chain, but not really like any others in the area. Off the beaten track and steeped in tradition, it’s one for those who are after a glimpse of more rustic, undeveloped Greece.

The highlights here include the time-stood-still village of Olympos, a mountain town with pastel-painted churches and sun-baked plazas wedged between dusty ridges. Meanwhile, there are some gorgeous beaches, like Apella Beach (a pebble cove under high cliffs), and Kyra Panagia (a swimming haven with pearly blue waters).

On top of all that, Karpathos happens to be the kite surfing and windsurfing mecca of the eastern Aegean. It’s even host to international competitions, which mainly take place on the sporty beach of Afiartis on the far southern cape.

Elafonisi from above

Elafonisi continues to draw hordes of beach lovers to the south coast of Crete. It’s a special place thanks to its unique isthmus beaches, which come dashed with strange pink sand. They lend the whole place a sort of Bermuda-Carib feel, especially when you factor in the uber-clear waters of the Libyan Sea that wash through this corner of the Med.

There’s extra drama thanks to the rugged backdrop of the high White Mountains. They tower over to the north, gazing down towards the series of small lagoons and dunes that roll out to form the patchwork of shoreline that is Elafonisi island.

The good news is that you won’t have to catch a boat to Elafonisi. You will need a coach or a car to get there first, as it’s sat on the far south-western edge of the island. Then, it’s just about wading through the narrow sea channel that cuts between the two shorelines. The beaches closer to the coast are usually the busiest but walk a little and you can often find space to yourself.

Gavdos, Crete

Beyond the southern shore of the region of Chania, the diminutive island of Gavdos is about as small as small-island life can get. Here, just 85 locals collect their own wellwater and stick to an off-grid system. It’s the southernmost point in Europe, sat just 160 miles from the coast of North Africa – closer to Libya than to Athens.

Life on Gavdos is about escaping the Rat Race. The main port is the main center. It links to the towns of Paleochora, Sougia, Hora Sfakion, and Agia Roumeli over on Crete by irregular boat connections. It’s home to a couple of simple seafood tavernas, and there’s just a speckling of truly remote guesthouses where you’ll wake to empty vistas of crumpled hills and cypress scrub.

The geography is pure drama from start to finish. The north coast is a whole world apart from the south coast. The first comes dashed by horseshoe beaches backed by gnarled acacia trees and cacti. The south is almost all sheer-cut cliffs bashed by unforgiving waves. The capes there make for some seriously awesome hiking , and there’s a strange monument marking the end of the continent to see!

Chrissi

Chrissi is where the Cretan archipelago does its best impression of the Caribbean. Washed by the balmy Lybian Sea some 10 miles south of the port of Ierapetra in eastern Crete, the isle is a true stunner. The north shore is where the money shots are at, thanks to wisps of pink-tinged beaches with the same coral-crush dusting that gives Elafonisi its famous red hue.

Most people will actually stay along the short stretch that links up Golden Beach and Agios Nikolaos Beach. They are both sandy and both lapped by light waves of clear turquoise blue. They are also both within easy walking distance of the main port and offer stunning views back north to Crete’s wild mountain ranges.

It might be worth packing the walking shoes for your jaunt here, too. The whole island is navigable on foot and comes dotted with gnarled trees and sandy paths. The reward for those who go rambling will be visions of the dark-sanded Vlychadia Beach and several totally deserted coves on the south coast.

Rocky shores in Crete

Check the map of the Aegean Sea at the very north-western tip of Crete. See that speckling of tiny islets? Together they are known as the Dionysades and the largest of the bunch is Dragonada. It’s no more than 1.6 miles across from its farthest two points, so isn’t really the best choice for that next pitstop on an island-hopping tour. However, it’s a fun destination for those with their own boat looking to explore the hidden nooks and crannies of Crete .

And you will need your own vessel to get across since there are no public ferry services. The best place to anchor is the natural harbor-cove on the south coast. Pull in and you’ll see the handsome Chapel of Saint Anthony standing next to the sole building on the island.

From there, a dirt walking trail connects to a tiny cove further north but that’s as far as it goes. To explore more, you’ll need to go off track. Some will stick to the sea, though, since Dragonada is known for its uber-clear waters and fish-teeming snorkeling spots.

Mykonos

Mykonos is abuzz with life from May until August. It’s one of the Aegean’s most iconic R&R spots, with oodles of beach hotels, jet-setter yachts, and a chic nightlife to match. If you’re keen to see and be seen, then there’s good news: A direct slow ferry and even fast hydrofoil ferries link Heraklion to Mykonos for much of the high season.

They can take between four and eight hours in all, since the journey is a pretty long one across the whole south Aegean Sea . You’ll arrive into lovely Mykonos Town, a chora of whitewashed cottages that’s topped by the famous Mykonos Windmills.

From there, you have choices. Will you head to the south coast for sleepless nights of partying on the sands in Super Paradise Beach? Will you stick to the town to enjoy the honeymoon vibes and LGBTQ+ bars of Little Venice? Or, will it be the east of the island, which is altogether more untouched and quiet?

Santorini

No list of the of top Greek islands to visit from Crete could possibly be complete without at least a nod to what’s almost certainly the most popular island-hopping destination in the Aegean. Cue Santorini…

A dramatic isle that’s actually the crest of an old volcano, it’s the closest of the Cyclades to the port of Heraklion. There are now regular ferries going between the two in the summer months, taking between four and six hours in total.

It’s a trip you won’t regret. Santorini offers some of the most amazing sunset shows on the planet. The villages of Oia and Fira are well-equipped to make the most of them, too. They come dotted with luxurious cave hotels that have infinity pools on the cliffsides, or charming tavernas where you’ll dine on Greek cuisine as the sun dips.

Daytime adventures on Santorini are usually about boat trips into the Caldera, lazing on Red Beach, or exploring the ancient ruins of Akrotiri. What’s more, this is the perfect next stepping stone for continuing your travels , what with Milos , Ios, Mykonos, and a whole host of other islands within close proximity!

So, what are the best Greek islands to visit from Crete?

There are oodles of Greek islands to visit from Crete. They range from far-flung spots like Santorini to enchanting islets on the doorstep like Spinalonga. The first sort could be that next pitstop on a cross-Aegean island hop. The ones close to Crete itself are great for daytrips to see something a little different.

It’s possible to get to many of the top Greek islands to visit from Crete by yourself – Elafonisi only requires a car, for example. However, you might need to book tours or ferries in advance if you want to travel to the likes of Mochlos, Gavdos or Santorini, so be sure to check that ahead of time.

  • In order to enter Greece, U.S. and Canadian citizens need a valid passport with an expiration date at least six months beyond the date of reentry.
  • We recommend having at least one blank passport page for entry stamps.
  • Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
  • Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if you’ve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, you’ll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you’re not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code GIS.
  • You’ll walk for at least 1.5 hours daily across uneven terrain, along paved roads and cobblestone streets, and up steep hills and stairs.
  • You should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance. Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on your tour.
  • You should feel comfortable occasionally managing your own baggage, as well as getting in and out of ferries.
  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide you with individualized mobility assistance: The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group as a whole enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and they can’t be relied upon to provide ongoing help to any one traveler.
  • If you have any mobility concerns or physical restrictions, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in and depart from Athens. When you first arrive, a representative from Go Ahead Tours will meet you at the airport and take you to your hotel. If you don’t see them, please remain in the arrival lounge: They might be escorting one of your fellow travelers.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at your destination are included for travelers who’ve purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who purchased their own flights may request airport transfers with Go Ahead Tours for an additional cost.
  • Flights from Athens to Chania and from Santorini to Athens, as well as a ferry transfer from Heraklion to Santorini, are included in the price of your tour.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches, ferries, flights, and other modes of transportation.
  • Contact your airline(s) for the luggage restrictions for your itinerary. Please note that on-tour flights may have tighter size and weight limits than your round-trip airfare to and from tour.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any bags or exceed their size and weight restrictions. Be advised: You’re responsible for any luggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Porterage isn’t included on ferry transfer(s). You should be comfortable lifting and carrying your luggage over the boarding ramp and into the storage area.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It’s preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders. (You may be denied entrance on this basis.)
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your healthcare provider, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at cdc.gov , for the latest updates and entry requirements.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour, as well as any possible delays you may encounter.
  • Please note that codeine (commonly found in headache medications) is banned in Greece, and you may face prosecution if you bring it into the country.
  • If you have any dietary restrictions or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging into your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please call our Customer Experience Team.
  • Greece’s warm climate ensures a constant supply of fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables. Salads served with aromatic olive oil, feta cheese, and oregano are plentiful, as are dishes centered on grilled fish, meat, squid, and octopus. One of our favorite plates? Spanakopita—a savory mix of spinach, cheese, and seasonings, wrapped in phyllo dough and baked to crisp perfection.
  • Greece operates on the European standard of 220–240 volts and uses Type C, E, or F plugs with two small, round pins.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or any device without one built in.
  • The strength of the air conditioning in European hotels is often not as strong or cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada. When air conditioning is available, it’s usually regulated seasonally and controlled centrally by the hotel.
  • Your hotels may provide hairdryers, irons, and other small appliances. However, these amenities can’t be guaranteed.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Greece is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and seven hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 7pm in Greece.
  • You’ll use the euro on this tour.
  • Better exchange rates are usually available overseas, but it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take a debit card, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed. You can also use most cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.
  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10–$12USD per person, per day for your Tour Director, and the equivalent of $3USD per person, per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • Most optional excursions will be available for purchase while you’re on tour.
  • Your Tour Director will only accept cash (in USD only), Visa, or MasterCard as payment for optional excursions.
  • Please be advised that if you pay for an excursion by credit card while on tour, it may take up to three months for it to be charged.
  • Some optional excursions may only be purchased in advance. See the last page of your tour itinerary for more information.

Incredible Crete! Tour

Incredible Crete!

The tour of Crete was indeed Incredible due to two great gentlemen! RG and Kostintinos displayed the utmost professionalism and class as they drove us all through the island of Crete. They were very genuine and thoughtful to Michele and I throughout the entire trip. They both knew that we were eager to experience and learn about Crete. Michele and I wanted to see Crete through the eyes of the locals that’s reside there and RG and Kostas delivered! We went off the grid and had experiences with Epos Tours that we never could have planned ourselves. Kostas is a wealth of information regarding the culture and history of Crete. From the minute you meet these two men you will bond and have the best travel experience ever! Miss you both and thanks again!

Very good tours & guides provided. Our hotel was in a narrow street that caused problems for the bus pickups. Some confusion occurred when larger buses were provided. But accommodation was good.

Discovering Crete, Self-drive Tour

Discovering Crete, Self-drive

I maybe should have thought about this more. I assumed there might be other folks on this tour and we'd have someone suggesting where to go. Instead, I was on my own and traveling alone. That was okay. I had the itinerary and the hotel for suggestions and I had a great time (except when I thought I'd lost my cards and spent all my time at Rethymnon dealing with that, but that was not the fault of the tour.) The hotels were good except that finding them was not always easy and the one at Agios Nikolaou had some stairs (and google sent me the wrong way down a one way street to get there.) They all had balconies and good to great breakfasts. My biggest complaint was that the rental company gave me a black car. They said I should have ordered a nonblack car. But I didn't order it and who would bring a black car to Crete? It was hot at 9:30 in the morning in September. I was warned it would be a standard, which wasn't a problem for me. But it had 6 gears plus reverse. Going into or over the mountains required a lot of up and down shifting, I had been warned by a taxi driver in Athens about Crete drivers, but it was the motorcycle drivers that had death wishes. This is a tour for the adventurous and self-directive. I made it to both Elafonissi Beach and the Cave of Zeus, which I highly recommend, though they mean negotiating the aforementioned mountain roads with hairpin turns on narrow roads.

Reviews of crete tours.

Very good tour. Accommodation and day tours were great. The major problem were the transfers. Dropped off on the side of the road and told to walk approximately 500 metres to the hotel with no directions, the tour pick-up point was a 10 minute walk from the hotel and finally after waiting for our airport transfer for over an hour at the designated pick-up location had to organise a taxi ourselves. We were refunded the allocated transfer amount not the actual cost of the taxi so out of pocket as well.
The tours were great. I really felt like I explored Crete and got my money’s worth. I did not appreciate the quality of the hotel. I upgraded to a “superior” category of hotel and the room they put me in was trash. Felt like I was sleeping on a table and the room itself was in disrepair. I talked to the tour radar rep and instead of helping me improve the situation he told me that I was told about this weeks ago and left it at that. I didn’t appreciate that at all. I ended up talking with the hotel front desk and upgraded to a better room and I was happy.

10 Best Greece Cruises, According to Travel Experts

These are the best Greece cruises for island hopping with ease.

greek island tour from crete

Courtesy of Variety Cruises

With its stunning beaches, rich history, iconic landmarks, and delectable cuisine, a trip to Greece is always a great idea. However, since the nation is home to more than 6,000 islands — some of which are only accessible by boat — your best bet is to explore via cruise. Just take it from Rob Clabbers, Travel + Leisure A-List travel advisor and Q Cruise + Travel founder, who tells T+L that “Greece and the Greek isles are just the perfect destinations to explore by ship” since “a cruise allows you to see more islands and gives you a unique vantage point.” Several of the best Greece cruises also include visits to neighboring countries like Turkey and Italy, for example, which allow travelers to experience several cultures and countries in one action-packed trip. Intrigued? We don’t blame you: Ahead, check out our favorite Greece cruises for every type of traveler, along with itinerary recommendations and expert insight.

Meet the Expert

Rob Clabbers is a T+L A-List travel advisor and founder of Q Cruise + Travel, a Chicago-based travel agency.

Mary Curry is a T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist.

Kari Dillon is the owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, an agency specializing in theme park and cruise vacations.

Megan Guinnup is a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels.

Windstar Cruises

Courtesy of Windstar

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

Courtesy of Explora Cruises

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style.

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship."

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Courtesy of Silversea cruises

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.”

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

Courtesy of Ponant Cruises

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Courtesy of Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

Nicolas Economou/NurPhoto via Getty Images

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. Before returning to Athens for disembarkation, you’ll also stop in magnificent Milos.

Ferry from Athens to Mykonos

Athens is connected to Mykonos through the ports of Piraeus and Rafina.  Piraeus is the main port of Athens and is located near the city center, making it easily accessible. To travel to Mykonos, however, we recommend catching a ferry that departs from Rafina .

There are more ferry crossings available from Rafina to Mykonos, which are also shorter in duration. If you plan to take a taxi from Athens International Airport to your point of departure, getting to Rafina is also faster and cheaper.

In summer, there are up to 10 daily ferries departing from Rafina to Mykonos. The ferry companies that serve this connection are Seajets , Golden Star Ferries, Blue Star Ferries , and Fast Ferries .

Most ferries depart early in the morning, between 07:00 and 08:00 . However, there are usually additional ferry crossings scheduled in the afternoon and the evening, between 14:30 and 22:45 .

The duration of the ferry trip from Rafina to Mykonos depends on the ferry company and the type of vessel you’ve chosen. High-speed ferries reach the port in 2-2.5 hours while traveling by conventional ferry takes 4-4.5 hours .

The price of a standard economy seat for the Rafina - Mykonos ferry trip usually starts at €38 . The final cost may vary depending on discounts, offers, seat type, car-deck space, and the ferry company.

Tip : the port of Rafina is rather busy during summer, especially in the morning. Therefore, we suggest you arrive at the port well in advance to avoid delays. Close to the port of Rafina, you can find shops, coffee bars, and various services.

Ferry from Mykonos to Santorini

The Mykonos - Santorini ferry route  is rather popular in the summer months, with around 7 daily trips from morning to afternoon. The ferry companies that operate on the connection between Mykonos and Santorini are Seajets, Golden Star Ferries , Fast Ferries, and Minoan Lines .

The first ferry departs at 09:50 in the morning, while the last one leaves at around 19:00 . The duration of the ferry ride depends on the ferry company, type of vessel (mainly high-speed ), and any intermediate stops. The shortest crossing lasts a bit more than  1.5 hours , while the longest lasts 2.5-3.5 hour s.

The price of a standard ferry ticket can be up to  €90 . If you want to bring along your car, make sure to book a route that allows the transportation of vehicles.

Tip : instead of departing early in the morning, take some time to experience the vivid nightlife of Mykonos before leaving the island. You can choose to travel in the afternoon and arrive in Santorini later in the day, the best time to enjoy the island’s world-famous sunset!

Ferry from Santorini to Heraklion (Crete)

The ferry route between Santorini and Heraklion is available with up to 3-4 daily sailings and is operated by 4 companies : Seajets, Fast Ferries and Minoan Lines.

The ferry ride lasts less than  2 hours and a   standard ferry ticket costs around €78 for high-speed ferries.

Keep in mind that Santorini to Crete ferries usually depart in the afternoon. Normally, the first  ferry crossing from Santorini to Heraklion is at 14:55 and the latest at 16:40 . By arriving at the port of Heraklion early in the evening, there is plenty of time to leave your luggage at the hotel and enjoy a nice walk around the city.

Tip : if you are hungry after your ferry trip, we suggest you try out the delicious local cuisine of Crete. Don’t forget to taste the legendary souvlaki of Heraklion.

Ferry from Heraklion to Athens

Getting back to Athens can be tricky, but Ferryhopper is here to make it easier for you. While Rafina is the suggested starting point for this island-hopping journey, your return trip will be to Piraeus instead, the only port connecting Crete to Athens.

There are up to 5 daily ferry crossings between Heraklion and Piraeus .   The first ferry usually departs around 09:00 and arrives at the port of Piraeus (Athens) at 18:00, while the last ferry  leaves the port of Heraklion (Crete) at 21:00 and reaches Piraeus at around 06:30 the following morning. The ferry ride normally lasts 9-9.5 hours .

The  4 ferry companies operating on this route are Minoan Lines, Anek Lines , Fast Ferries, and Blue Star Ferries.

Ferry tickets for this route start at around €36 , though the final cost may vary depending on seasonality, offers and discounts. Ferries from Heraklion to Piraeus are large conventional vessels with car decks and plenty of cabins.

We strongly suggest booking a cabin for a comfortable return to Athens. As most ferries from Heraklion to Piraeus travel at night, you can sit back and relax after your Greek island-hopping in the Aegean Sea.

Tip : as this route gets rather busy in the high season, we recommend planning your trip well in advance.

Beach tour in Crete.

The Boat Cruise to Balos Lagoon & Gramvousa is a great day trip and a fun way to visit one of Crete’s best beaches.

The 12 Best Tours in Crete 1. Heraklio Food Walking Tour Food & walking tours are my favorite way to explore a new city and this is a good one. Heraklio is not as picturesque as Chania but it’s loaded with true Greek character, gritty charm, and great traditional Cretan food. This is the best Heraklio tour. 2. Chania Old Town Highlights with Street Food Great tour of Chania’s wonderful Old Town and its sights, culture, history, and best places to eat. Highly recommended. This is the best Chania tour. 3. Hiking Tour of Samaria Gorge Walking the 18 km gorge is the activity highlight of Crete. It’s a little tricky to arrange on your own but with a tour they get you from your hotel to the start of the hike – then pick you up at the other end of the gorge (after a short ferry ride) and return you back to your hotel. There’s a tour guide and a couple of other interesting stops that you wouldn’t do on your own. Free hotel pickup from these towns: Chania, Heraklio, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Hersonissos, Georgioupolis, Sissi, Milatos, Matala, Agia Galini, Malia, and Stalida. ( Click “Book Now” and then select your departure town .) 4. Boat Cruise to Balos Lagoon & Gramvousa The popular Balos Beach Tour is a 7 hour round trip onboard a large boat with indoor and outdoor seating, bathrooms, and a small snack bar serving ice cream, cold drinks, and beer on tap. The ride is roughly an hour in each direction, with 4 hours at Balos Lagoon, and a one hour stop during the return, at Gramvousa Island, where you can choose between a short hike to the hilltop Venetian fort, walking out toward the large shipwreck, or swimming at the gorgeous beach. There are also luxurious private boat tours from Chania and from Kissamos .

5. Wine and Olive Oil Tour (from Chania) A wonderful 6-hour tour that explores the local farms and wineries of western Crete. Lots of food, olive oil, and wine tastings (but still kid-friendly). 6. Authentic Cooking Class in the White Mountains (from Chania) Make and enjoy delicious Cretan cuisine at a traditional family home. Learn firsthand about local culture and history while sampling homemade wine and enjoying beautiful views over the foothills of the White Mountains. This small, hands-on group tour is great for kids, with exceptionally welcoming family hosts. Includes free transportation from Chania. 7. Boat Tour to Santorini Santorini is the most amazing island in Greece. This one-day tour involves a ferry trip (2 hours each way) and about 7 hours on Santorini to explore Fira, Oia, and the fantastic views of the caldera. (This is a worthwhile tour but if you can stay overnight on Santorini you’ll see much more of the island. I typically do not recommend day trips to other islands as they’re a poor use of time, but I make an exception for Santorini as it’s so unique and memorable.) 8. Elafonisi Island Day Trip (from Chania) Elafonisi is the best beach on Crete (maybe the best beach in Greece). It’s pretty easy to get there on your own with local buses but the tour makes it effortless and you get to stop at some local villages along the way. There’s also an Elafonisi tour that departs from Rethymno .

9. Cretan Wine Tasting Tour & Gourmet Lunch (from Heraklio) Great tour with lunch, 15 wine tastings, several olive oil samples, and multiple vineyard tours. 10. Day Tour to Spinalonga, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, and Plaka (from Heraklio) A 10-hour tour that takes in the highlights of eastern Crete. 11. The Real Crete (from Rethymno) Excellent small-group tour of some of central Crete’s top sights. Good local insight and history. 12. Knossos Archaeological Tour Good tour if you’re based in Heraklio, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Rethymno, or one of the nearby beach towns. Start with Knossos (one of the best historical sites in Greece and a personal favorite of mine) then tour Heraklio and learn the history of the island. 10 hours long and includes hotel pickup and drop-off. There is also an excellent private tour of Knossos from Heraklio .

About Santorini Dave

Santorini Dave Author Bio.

Going to Crete for 3 nights. Then on to Santorini. We were thinking to stay in Elounda. Porto Elounda. Then we can take bus into Chania? Should we rent a car for a day? See Elafonsi and Knossos?

' src=

Chania is wonderful but is a 3 hour drive (or 4 hours and 2 different buses) from Elounda. Elafonisi is even farther. A much better day trip if you have a rental car is a loop through Knossos, then Crete Wine Country, then the Lasithi Plateau.

Thanks so much for your helpful website! We took a trip to Santorini two years ago and followed a lot of your recommendations. We are taking a trip to Crete this year for a week in September. We’ll be spending half the time in Chania. While there, we’ll take a day trip to Elafonisi and go on an organized trip to the Gorge. We want to spend the last leg of the trip (3 nights and three days) chilling on the beach at a hotel. We like luxurious hotels, but we worry with some of these big resorts, we won’t really feel like we are in Greece. Can you recommend a hotel that is right on a white sandy beach, but we’ll still feel like we aren’t in some big resort with all tourists? We are flying back from Chania, but we’ll have a rental car so the hotel can be anywhere within reason on the island.

That’s a sizeable order as most of the luxurious hotels have grabbed the best beach locales in Crete already and by virtue of being within the gated walls of a luxury hotel you are almost guaranteed to have sealed yourself off from Greece anyway. However, there is hope. Some luxury hotels are not located close to other luxury hotels and are sometime in authentic locales.

The Caramel Hotel is a place for subtle luxury with its own decent beach. It’s located in a largely agricultural area east of Rethymno and unlike most gated hotels the front door to this place opens out right onto an ordinary Greek street where you can hop on a bus to Rethymno. Private beach by the way doesn’t apply in Greece – according to law – all beaches are public areas.

In Chania itself is the newish Domes Noruz which sits on a beach, but is itself right in the middle of a neighbourhood in the suburb of Agioi Apostoli. Not only does it have its own beachfront, but within a hundred metres is a splendid little horseshoe shaped cove and beach that ordinary folk from Chania come to swim and picnic at. This might be the kind of place you are looking for.

Farther to the West from Chania in Kolymvari – a pretty little Cretan village is the Cavo Spada – another upper-end hotel in a remote-ish locale with Crete just outside the hotel gates. The beach and accommodation is pretty wonderful.

My wife and I are going to be in Crete for the first 3 weeks in October. Do you have any suggestions for a good car hire company. We are flying into Chania and leave from Heraklion. We are staying a week in Chania area and then heading east. Any suggestions on what to see and where to go? Thanks. Rob

The best way to rent and reserve a rental car in Crete is on Rentalcars.com (pickup at Chania airport and drop off in Heraklion).

Having a car gives you a decided advantage and touring independently is the best way to see Crete. First up Chania itself. It is the most popular destination in Crete: Agios Nikolaos probably comes a close second. Chania is all about the atmosphere and ambiance of its Old Town. Assuming you will be based there, you will have plenty of time to appreciate it during your week. Chania Old Town is all about relaxing, dining, imbibing and just people watching in a primarily pedestrianised and timeworn walled port. You can take glass-bottomed boat excursions explore the labyrinthine back streets with their gift shops, tavernas and houses of the lucky locals who live there. It’s just refreshingly pleasant and it’s a magnet for visitors. You might just bump into your old friend from High School here. When dining, choose carefully and generally keep away from the main harbour touts and picture menus. The best eats are in the back streets and at the eastern side of the harbour. You can swim in Chania – within walking distance – but your car will serve you better here.

If you are looking for exotic beaches then the boat tour to the edge of the Gramvousa peninsula (Ballos Beach) is a good day trip. Boats run out of Kissamos . Easier to get to (no tour needed) is the stunning Carribbean-esque Elafonisi Beach on the far south western tip of Crete. Falasarna beach is also great. It’s not as popular but it’s no slouch. With your car, you may care to take a less beachy run to the pretty village of Palaiochora and enjoy the hinterland of Western Crete. With an early morning start you can cut more or less diagonally across Crete through the villages of Nea Roumata, Rodovani and Strati – to name but a few of the many – that dot a pretty winding route across the mountains. You will need that early start to make it comfortably in time for lunch. Palaiochora has some good places for eating and a couple of beaches: one sandy and one pebbly. Divert instead to Sougia (see Google maps) if you prefer a quieter seaside destination.

The one highlight that a car won’t help you with is walking the Samaria Gorge. The car will take you to the starting point at Omalos, but the bus from Chora Sfakion will only take you to Chania and you’ll have to take another bus to Omalos to retrieve the car. Best use a bus to Omalos in the first instance. The car will conveniently take you around the sizeable peninsula to the north east of Chania where you might want to make your way to the little-known beach of Seïtan-Limani on the east side then head for lunch and afternoon swim at the little village of Stavros in the North.

It might also be a good idea to allow for a night in Heraklion and spend that pre-departure day visiting the Knossos Archaeological site then soak up the vibrant nightlife and streetside dining in the Cretan capital. Its recently revamped city centre really buzzes at all hours of the day.

I will be staying in Chania early September and would like to make a trip from Chania to Spinalonga. Do you know if any of the tour companies in Chania do this trip? Jacqueline Young

From Heraklion, yes. But from Chania, I’m not sure. If it’s available should be easy to book after you arrive.

Hi Dave, my girlfriend and I are travelling to Greece for 2 weeks ( 15 nights ), August 13th. We are a young couple from Canada trying to have a combination of relaxation but also to party. First we are landing in Athens and sleep for a night so we can catch an early flight the next morning to Crete. We are spending 4 nights in Chania; we are planning to hit the beach (Elafonissi, Balos etc …) and go around the old city of Chania. Then we are going to Santorini for 3 nights and then other 4 nights to the island of Ios. And finally we are staying 2 nights in Athens towards the end of the trip. I feel like my island hopping around the Greek islands is good enough however I was wondering if I should purchase the ferry tickets before going to Greece or to buy them on the spot before taking the boat. Thank you Dave, I used your guide most of the time to plan this vacation and I can’t wait to go! Tarek El Tayeh

The ferry I would be most concerned about would be Crete to Santorini. I would guess a 95% chance you’ll be fine if you wait and buy the first day you land in Crete, but there is always that small risk that they will be sold out (there are only 2 ferries per day and you’ll be traveling at the very peak of summer travel). Personally, I would buy in advance at Hellenic Seaways and pick up at the Heraklion port about 30 to 45 minutes in advance of departure. For the other ferries there are more options (even if one happened to be sold out) so very very unlikely that they would be fully booked. But still, buy the first chance you get (you can buy in Crete even though the other routes are between different ports).

Hey there! My husband and I will be traveling to Crete next month for our 1 year anniversary (which we are calling our honeymoon as we never went on a honeymoon). We would love to see Santorini and are debating a 1 day trip vs a 2 day trip. Have you used and been on a tour with the company you suggested? The reviews I’ve read about the ferries are all over the place in regards to rating so I’m hesitant to make a decision on one. For instance, Hellenic Seaways vs SeaJets. Jacque

I would not do a one day trip to Santorini (too much travel for only a short amount of time) but with an overnight stay, yes, it’s definitely worth it. Both ferries on this route are good but go with Hellenic.

My husband and I are taking a trip to Greece in September and will be visiting Crete for 3 full days. We are staying in Chania at Domes Noruz. I have planned for one day to take a trip to Elafonisi. I am torn with what to do on our second day. I would love to see the Samaria Gorge but neither my husband or I are big hikers and hiking for 7 hours seems a bit daunting. I could do something more like 2 or 3 hours tops. Are there options for shorter hikes at the Gorge and if so are they even worth it if we are not hiking the whole thing? Another option I was considering is Knossos Palace, is that worth the trip from Chania? What would be your recommendation for what to do with our last two days there? I was thinking for our last day we could enjoy our hotel and beach and maybe in the late afternoon do a tour of Chania or just go explore the town and have a nice dinner there. Something a little more relaxing since we are taking the first flight out the next day to Athens. I am a bit torn with what to do on our second day there… Thank you for your help!

People of all ages, sizes and stamina successfully undertake the Samaria Gorge each year. While you didn’t say how old you are, the fact that you state that you are big hikers should not rule out you doing the Samaria Gorge. First up, it shouldn’t take you 7 hours. It is 16kms in length and even at a brisk stroll of say 5kms per hour, then that’s a 3 hour and 20-minute hike. Allow between 4 to 5 hours to be sure – and that is taking into account breaks and photo stops.

The hike is in general a downhill walk, so there is actually very little climbing. If you start before 8am – as most people do – then you will be strolling into Agia Roumeli by lunchtime for a welcome lunch on the beach and the afternoon coastal ferry will take you to Chora Sfakion from where you will take a (waiting) bus back to Chania. It really is a well-oiled and easy operation. They key to doing the hike without strife is preparation and planning. No, it’s not worth doing a shorter hike in the Gorge because if you walk say 3kms down into the Gorge you will have to climb that 3kms back out of it again. It’s better to keep on going.

Be at the starting point – as mentioned – before 8am (a bus from Chania will get you there on time). Most definitely wear proper hiking boots as the terrain is rocky and rough in parts. Take water, snacks, sunscreen and a hat and don’t undertake the hike in mid-Summer. The main stress on the legs is from the constant stepping down, so you want good shock-absorbent footwear, and your front thighs will probably take most of the strain. A walking pole such as a Lekki would be a good investment and that would give you the ‘third leg’ to assist with the transfer of weight.

You would never be alone as hundreds undertake the walk daily, though on the whole you tend to walk in isolation from the others as everyone thins out after a kilometre or two. Stay put for five minutes and someone will bump into you. Guards at the entrance gate vet all walkers and will not let people through if they look as though they will not make the hike: aged, unsuitable footwear or non-protective clothing. There may be some stream wading depending on the pre-existing weather.

The good thing about the Samaria gorge is that every step is taken care of: from getting there to getting back. With other shorter gorge walks – such as the Kourtaliotiko Gorge – you will need to arrange drop-off and pick up accordingly. The Gorge of the Dead linking Pano and Kato Zakros in far eastern Crete is a pleasant and easy hike and a bus will take you from one end of the gorge to the other.

And yes, Knossos is worth the effort to get to but do get a guide (can be hired at the entrance) as it makes the sight much more interesting. A day relaxing in Chania sounds wonderful.

Dave – Thank you for all the effort on this blog. It has helped a ton. My wife and I are staying in Elounda at the end of May and are looking to charter a guided boat for a day cruise. Do you have any suggestions for which company to contact? 3-5 hrs, visit beaches, Spinalonga, etc… Cost estimate?

Thanks again, Keith Nelson

Trips to Spinalonga are big business in Elounda and the choice of tours can be bewildering. Nearly everyone with a boat offers some kind of tour which may include swimming stops or additional cruising. Costs can range from €40 to €80 depending on whether food and drink is included and on whether tickets to visit the island are included.

In general, there is quite a bit of tourist exploitation going on so really shop around for the deal that suits you. If you just want to see the island (and unless you are a history fan and want to see how lepers lived) then walking around the stone buildings of the island in the heat of the day might not be quite up your street.

Things to look out for: cost – what do you actually get for your euro? How long will the trip take? Does it include swimming? (You may not want that if you don’t want to swim or watch others swim). Does the tour include the price of entry to the island? You mention ‘chartering a boat’ – you’ll have to decide whether you’re ok with a small group, big group, or want a private boat to you and your wife. Have a look for starters at eloundaboat.gr and compare offerings at keytours.gr

You don’t have to pre-book before you arrive. Boats have little kiosks next to them on the harbour and you can shop and compare at will (visit in the evening when owners are back from their day trips and will answer your questions). The end of May will be quieter than high season so you may score better deals.

Hi Dave, Love your site! We will be staying in Heraklion area at the end of June. While there we would like to watch a concert or a play. What’s the best way to learn about what performances are happening and where to purchase tix?

Thank you! Vera

Concerts and events are commonly advertised by posters on walls and basically anywhere you can stick a poster in Greece. Trouble is they are usually in Greek though you can usually tell who the concert is by and when.

Online booking options include:

– Songkick – Bandsintown – Nowheraklion – Cretazine

Concert tickets are generally very cheap compared to home. If the concert or play is at an outdoor venue in an amphitheatre, make sure you bring something soft to sit on. They often sell Styrofoam pads outside such venues: buy two to be sure as the cement seats in stadiums are very uncomfortable after an hour or so.

There are often free concerts given by top-line musical artists, so don’t miss out on those if you can: they are every bit as good as the paid ones. Summer is a good time for concerts so you should find plenty to entertain you in Heraklion this Summer.

Hi Dave! My family and I are going to be in Crete, staying in Chania and would like to tour the Samaria Gorge on either May 26th or 27th — the tour you suggested isn’t available those dates to leave from Chania. Do you have any other suggestions for who to tour Samaria Gorge with for about the same price? Do we need to do the tour to get to the Gorge or can we take a bus ? Thanks! Jess

You can do it on your own with buses but it’s much easier to do as part of a tour. I would wait until you arrive and you might be able to find a smaller local company that does small tours (perhaps through your hotel).

Dave, This website is EVERYTHING. Thank you so much already for all the help!

While my trip isn’t very long, because it could very well be my only trip to Greece, I saw you recommended crunching in both Crete & Santorini. We fly into Athens on Mon, June 26, to Santorini on Tues June 27, to Crete June 30 and back to Athens July 3 before flying back to the US on July 4. I don’t very much like rushing around but I’m a huge fan of a nice beach. With only 2 full days in Crete, is it realistic to think I’ll be able to get to Elofanisi? Just seems forever away from the ferry in Heraklion. And if I can get there, am I better off staying in Rethimnon as was recommended to me or staying in Chania?

Thanks! Julie

Ps: planning on staying at Herodian Hotel in Athens unless Ava Suites is better? Also, having difficulty finding a nice, affordable and available hotel so far in Santorini–seems only Aria Lito Mansion–is that ok?

It will basically use one full day getting to and from Elafonisi. Is it worth it? Only you can say. It’s a wonderful beach and one of my all time favorites. I’d check the weather just to be sure you’re not going on a windy day but otherwise (if you really love beaches) go for it. Ava Suites is a little nicer than Herodian (but both are great). Ava is also a little closer to the metro station for the port and subway. Aria Lito is a good value hotel with a central location but no caldera views.

Hi Dave! My husband and I are traveling to Crete in a few weeks, and spending 5 nights in Chania. We wanted to explore Elafonisi beach and Balos beach. For Balos: would it be best to take a boat (big cruise boat, or something more private like Captain Yiorgi’s boat trip) or do the drive? For Elafonisi: any tips for the drive or where to stop along the way? We are in our early 30’s.

Thanks! Lauren

Balos Beach (Gramvousa Peninsula) can be done by car, but the result is probably not worth the effort you will put into it and your hire car company may not be happy to learn you have taken their car over that rough road (starting from Afrata) you will have to traverse to get there. This is one occasion where the organised tour is worth the money see Cretan Daily Cruises (from Kissamos) for details on how to do it in a group setting.

The drive to Elafonisi is straightforward and is worth combining with a stop at the Eco resort of Milia . You could make an early start on Elafonisi and have a swim and sunbathe before driving back and stopping off at Milia for a mid-afternoon lunch here.

If you have not driven in Greece/Crete before there are no real surprises. The only issue – from the Greek driver’s point of view – is that tourists tend to drive perceptibly slower (more cautiously) than locals and this can cause irritation (to the locals). The end result is often tailgating (by local drivers) and impatient overtaking on their part. Either drive at ‘local speed’ or, if you are the cautious sort and you get caught by a tail-gating local, let them pass. The road is winding, but pleasant and from Chania it should take you no more than 1 hour and 30 minutes to Elafonisi. Hire cars are usually stick shift types, so if you only know how to drive an automatic you might be limited and want to book a car in advance.

' src=

I am travelling to Crete on 11th – 21st April we really wanted to see Samaria gorge but it doesn’t look like it will be open. For the first part of our trip we will be based in Kissamos which we thought would be ideal for the gorge trip. After that we will be staying further west (Hersonissos and then lastly Rethymno) so it may be harder to get to from there.

Do you know when the Samaria Gorge is likely to open this year? I have read that it is dependant on how the weather was during winter months.

Thank you (great website really helpful!) Emily

The Gorge traditionally opens on 1st of May, but this date is not set in stone. It’s not usually before the 1st but can be up to 10 days after the 1st. It depends on a number of factors: damage that may have been caused to the trail during Winter, the amount of water in the stream, or the anticipated amount of water that might come, if there is still snow in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori). So, from 11-21st April it is unlikely that you will get to do the walk.

Kissamos is not the best base for doing the walk BTW. Unless you are on an organised tour, you will have to take two buses: from Kissamos to Chania and from Chania to Omalos at the start of the trial. You really need to be at the trailhead no later than 9am and that means an early start from Chania.

Rethymno is further from Omalos than Kissamos, so really only an organised tour is going to do it for you, same with Hersonisos. Either way unless you are very lucky, your walk down the Samaria Gorge is going to have to be postponed to another year. Good video here to see what you’re missing.

Great site with excellent information.

My family will be spending some time in Santorini in July. Before we all meet there, my son and I would like to do some cycling on another island for about 3 days – not touring, just out-and-back each day from the same location. We’re experienced cyclists and can manage 75-80 km round trips without a problem. We would need to rent good road bikes.

It looks like Crete would be the best combination of easy access from Athens/to Santorini, provide interesting routes (to beaches and archeological sites, for example), a quality bike shop (Olympic Bike) and developed, paved roads.

I’ve also looked at Naxos. It may also work, but maybe doesn’t maximize all those things listed above.

Any thoughts?

Thanks! K.C. Jones

Crete certainly offers some extensive cycling opportunities because of its the size, but 40kms out and 40kms back won’t get you very far in Crete. For example, 40kms would get you to the next town of Kissamos. Also the best cycling territory is the north coastline which is thread by the very busy Cretan Northern Axis road and it is not that cyclist friendly. The middle of the island is dominated by mountains so crossing north to south will involve climbing and the south coast doesn’t have an obvious main highway but would be more picturesque than the north. Again, long distance dominate so bicycle touring would be the way to go, rather than out and back tours. Have a look at Hellas Bike Greece to see what’s on offer. You might find some clues.

The only other island that jumps off the page for cycling and where it is big, well organised and easy is Kos. Hundreds of people hire bicycle here and do day tours. The island is generally flat, small and accessible and there are plenty of bikes on offer. Check out Kos Bike Activities . In practice there is no reason why you can’t cycle on any island and you will always find a place to hire a bike. Most other islands have hills and if you do hills, you will be fine.

Hi Dave, I will be staying in Athens the month of March. I want to take in everything there and in the surrounding areas on the mainland. What are some of the best tours for out of the city? My interests are wineries, cooking, cultural events, and historical places, meeting people, etc.

Take a look at Best Things to Do in Athens .

We are in Crete for 4 nights after island hopping in the Greek islands. Our hotel is Galaxy Heraklion. Is that the right choice and could we do a couple of tours from there? Would love a boat day trip as one of the tour days. Noela Mckenzie

Nice hotel with a decent location as long as you don’t mind a 10/12 walk to the city center. The highlights of Heraklion are the Archaeological Museum (12 minutes from the Galaxy) and Knossos (bus stop is a short walk from the hotel).

Dave, first of all thank you so much for such a wonderful resource. This has been really helpful with planning our first trip to Greece. Wanted to get your input on a couple things. We are a couple in our early 30s going to Greece for our honeymoon. We arrive in Athens at 9:20am Saturday May 20 and fly out of Athens at 1pm on Monday May 29th, giving us 9 days and nights. We plan to fly to santorini from Athens on an early afternoon flight on the Saturday we arrive. We have a cave villa booked in Oia for 4 nights and wanted to spend the remaining 4-5 nights on another island. We love hiking, good food and beautiful beaches so Crete looks very appealing however I know spending at least a week there is generally recommended. Do you think it sounds feasible/not too crazy to take the evening ferry from santorini to Heraklion then take a bus to Chania and spend 4-5 nights there then fly from Chania to Athens for our return flight home. We realize we would not be able to see all of Crete but are mainly interested in hiking the Samaria Gorge, exploring Chania and visiting Elafossini Beach, possibly Balos Lagoon. Would you recommend that we cut Santorini to just 3 nights to spend more time on Crete? Also, do you know if the public bus is operating to the beaches in late May? How are the crowds there at that time of year? We know we are probably missing out on Athens so would consider exploring there on the Sunday before we fly back if time allows. Any suggestions or feedback on our itinerary is greatly appreciated! Mandy Miller

Yes, it’s definitely doable – you won’t have a lot of time but I think still plenty to have a great visit. Buses will be running to Elafonisi in late May and crowds will not be bad – some people for sure, but nothing crazy. I’d stick with 4 nights (3 full days) on Santorini – so much to do and see.

We will be staying in Santorini for one week and would like to make a day trip from Santorini to Crete. How would we go about arranging this? Is there a tour we can book for the ferries? We are considering staying a night on Crete – would you recommend that? We’ve heard great things about the Chania walking tour and visiting Knossos so would like to do those 2 things at least.

Thank you, Ev

Due to the schedule of the ferries a day trip is not possible from Santorini to Crete. Ferries leave Crete (for Santorini) in the early morning and leave Santorini (for Crete) in the early evening. So a one day trip is impossible and even staying over one night doesn’t do much as you’d only have the night hours on Crete. To see anything in Crete you would need to stay two nights. A better choice for a short trip from Santorini is Ios, Paros, or Naxos.

Monday, September 25: Arrive Heraklion | Transfer to hotel | PM at leisure | Welcome reception Upon arrival at Heraklion’s Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport (HER), you are met for a private transfer to our hotel. Enjoy some time to relax and settle in. Gather this evening for a welcome reception with your lecturer. Dinner is on your own. Overnight at the 5-star Megaron Hotel (or similar) for four nights. (R)

Tuesday, September 26: Heraklion: AM walking tour, PM Archaeological Museum | Welcome dinner After an introductory lecture, we take a morning walking tour through Heraklion’s “old city,” surrounded by fortification walls initially built by the Arabs and later reinforced in the 15 th century by the Venetians. Along the way, enjoy a tasting of bougatsa (a Greek breakfast pastry) and Greek coffee. After lunch, tour the celebrated Heraklion Archaeological Museum, which houses the world’s finest collection of Minoan art and artifacts. Return to our hotel and gather this evening for a short walk to a local restaurant for our welcome dinner. (B,L,D)

Wednesday, September 27: Phaistos | Agia Triada | Voroi: Museum of Cretan Ethnology | Heraklion Begin the day with a visit to the ruins of the Minoan palace at Phaistos, a center of Minoan civilization that was destroyed in the 15 th century B.C. and one of four recognized major Minoan palaces in eastern Crete. (We will also visit the others—Knossos, Malia, and Zakros—over the next few days.) Continue on to the nearby Minoan “royal villa” of Agia Triada. After lunch we tour the Museum of Cretan Ethnology in Voroi to learn more about the people who have called this island home. Return to Heraklion, where we gather this evening for dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Thursday, September 28: Tylissos | Prinias Sanctuary | Gortyn | Heraklion This morning we drive to the archaeological site at Tylissos, where we find the ruins of three luxurious Minoan houses decorated with frescoes and tablets, and outfitted with a water supply system that attests to the city’s importance at one time. We then continue on to the peak sanctuary of Prinias, whose 7 th -century B.C. Temple A is the earliest known sculpture-decorated building in ancient Greece. After lunch in Zaros we visit the famous Greco-Roman site of Gortyn, which became the dominant city in the region after Phaistos fell, later became Roman and was the first city on Crete to accept Christianity, and persisted into the 9 th century A.D. Return to our hotel in Heraklion, where the evening is at leisure. (B,L)

Friday, September 29: Knossos | Malia | Agios Nikolaos Set out this morning for a visit to the legendary, partially-reconstructed Minoan palace at Knossos, rich in imagination thanks not only to its associated myth of the Minotaur and labyrinth but also to the excavation and reconstruction efforts of Sir Arthur Evans in the early 20 th century. We drive east along Crete’s northern coast, stopping to explore the ruins of the Minoan palace at Malia, before stopping for lunch in the village of Limnes. Continue on to Agios Nikolaos and check-in to our hotel before enjoying dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at the 5-star Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay hotel for five nights. (B,L,D)

Saturday, September 30: Archaeological Museum of Sitia | Zakros | Palaikastro | Toplou Monastery | Agios Nikolaos Drive to Sitia to explore its little-visited archaeological museum, whose most impressive artifacts are from the Minoan palace at Zakros and the Minoan city of Palaikastro, both of which we visit after the museum. End the day at the imposing, 15 th -century Toplou Monastery, which houses important frescoes, icons, and a museum of religious objects. Return to Agios Nikolaos for an evening at leisure. (B,L)

Sunday, October 1: Panagia Kera | Lato | Kritsa | Agios Nikolaos Start the day with a drive to Kritsa to visit the tiny Church of Panagia Kera, which houses Crete’s best-preserved Byzantine frescoes, some as old as the 13 th century. Next, explore the ancient, fortified, hilltop city of Lato, one of the best-preserved sites on Crete that postdates the Minoan era. In fact, this Dorian Greek site dates back to the 7 th century B.C., and was in use until approximately the 2 nd century A.D. Drive back to Kritsa for lunch and some free time to explore. Return to Agios Nikolaos, where the evening is at leisure. (B,L)

Monday, October 2: Gournia | Mochlos | Vasiliki | Agios Nikolaos This morning we drive to the well-excavated and -preserved Minoan town of Gournia, where we may best envision life in a Late Bronze Age (c. 1500 B.C.) town as we stroll cobbled streets among the ruins of some 50 houses, a small Minoan palace, and a cemetery. We then take a short boat ride to the island of Mochlos, where complex archaeological remains ranging from 3000 B.C. to the 10 th century A.D. have been found, including a Minoan town (c. 1700-1430 B.C.) and a Mycenaean village and cemetery (c. 1400-1250 B.C.). We return by boat to Crete proper and, after lunch, we explore the ruins of Vasiliki, one of the first Minoan settlements with town planning. Return to Agios Nikolaos, where we take a walking tour and then have dinner at a local restaurant. (B,L,D)

Tuesday, October 3: Areti Monastery | Spinalonga | Agios Nikolaos Begin the day with a visit to Areti Monastery, which was established in the 16 th century and re-established and restored in the 20 th century. Afterward, we take a short boat ride from Plaka to the picturesque island of Spinalonga, which is home to a 16 th -century Venetian fortress and was a leper colony for the first half of the 20 th century. Return by boat to Plaka, where we have some time on our own to explore. We return to Agios Nikolaos for the balance of the day at leisure. (B,L)

Wednesday, October 4: Heraklion | Ferry to Santorini | PM at leisure This morning we return to Heraklion to catch a high-speed ferry to Santorini (a.k.a. Thera), one of the world’s most breathtaking islands, dotted with whitewashed houses and churches perched on cliffs nearly 1,000 feet above the sea and its huge, drowned volcanic crater (caldera). After arriving at our hotel on the outskirts of the capital, Fira, lunch and the afternoon are at leisure; explore independently the nearby town center’s narrow cobbled streets lined with shops and/or enjoy our hotel’s amenities and views. We dine together at a local restaurant this evening. Overnight at the 5-star Orama Hotel & Spa for two nights . (B,D)

Thursday, October 5: Akrotiri | Fira: Museum of Prehistoric Thera Spend the morning exploring Santorini’s “Pompeii,” the haunting Minoan town of Akrotiri, preserved for millennia under volcanic ash, now excavated and protected with a roof. Navigate the town via wooden walkways among three-storey buildings and traces of life from before the eruption. Drive to Fira for lunch and to explore the superb Museum of Prehistoric Thera, which displays striking frescoes and various artifacts from Akrotiri. The balance of the day is at leisure to enjoy Fira and/or our hotel’s amenities. (B,L)

Friday, October 6: Ferry to Mykonos | PM at leisure After a relaxed morning (pending the ferry schedule) at our hotel, we take a high-speed ferry from Santorini to the island of Mykonos. Our hotel is located in the center of the island’s capital of Chora. The balance of the day is at leisure to enjoy our hotel’s amenities and/or explore independently Chora’s many upscale shops, art galleries, and seaside cafés. Overnight at the 5-star Semeli Hotel for two nights . (B)

Saturday, October 7: Delos | Mykonos: PM at leisure | Farewell dinner Take a short ferry ride to the nearby sacred island of Delos, legendary birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Delos was considered the most sacred island in the ancient Aegean, and the entire, albeit small, island is an archaeological site. After a thorough walk around the ruins of the sanctuary of Apollo and the town, as well as a visit to the small site museum, we return to Mykonos by ferry. Enjoy lunch and the afternoon at leisure. In the evening, we gather one last time for a farewell dinner. (B,D)

Sunday, October 8: Transfer to Mykonos Airport | Fly home You are met at the hotel for a private transfer to Mykonos Airport (JMK) for your flights homeward. (B)

Greek Island Tours: join us on an exquisite, two-week adventure to experience the islands of Greece and discover lands of stellar landscapes, intriguing histories and abundant ancient wonders.

No tour that touches down in Greece would be complete without a trip to Athens, which numbers as one of the world's greatest cities for its striking blend of modernity with antiquity; if nothing else, the Acropolis and the Parthenon - often considered the finest monument of Greek civilization - are certainly not to be missed.

We have the chance to stretch our legs a bit on a walking tour through the winding streets of Mykonos Chora, where we can marvel at the striking architecture of the Parapotiani Church, and then it's off to explore the archaeologically significant island of Delos, which was once the political and religious seat of the Aegean.

Our trip to Santorini brings with it the chance to experience donkey-treks or cable-car rides along the cast caldera rim and in Chania, we explore the narrow mediaeval streets and alleyways, discovering Turkish fountains and bathhouses, Venetian and Turkish houses, and delicious local delicacies in its legendary marketplaces.

Our Greek Island tours are the best way to get a comprehensive overview of the entire area.

Day 1 Arrival in Athens Today we arrive in Athens, the capital of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. The city has a long history dating from the first settlement in the Neolithic age; in the 5th Century BC, the city’s values and civilization acquired a universal significance. In 1834, it became the capital of the modern Greek state and an attractive modern metropolis with unrivalled charm. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Athens: City Touring Today we enjoy a guided tour of Athens, the heart and soul of Greece.* A large part of the town's historic centre has been converted into a 3-kilometre pedestrian zone (one of the largest in Europe), leading to the major archaeological sites, reconstructing -- to a large degree -- the ancient landscape, thus allowing us to avoid the city's horrendous traffic. We start at the Acropolis (with hopes to beat the heat/crowds), near the site of the Dionysos Theatre. Constructed in the 6th century BC, it is one of the world's oldest theatres and the place where the great works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were first performed. We will also see a more recent theatre, the Odeon of Herod Atticus from the second century AD, which is still used for concerts and performances. Ascending to the top of the Acropolis, we will see magnificent buildings dating from the 5th century BC, the Golden Age of Athens. On the highest point on the Acropolis is the Parthenon, often considered the finest monument to Greek civilization. The temple was dedicated to Athena "Parthenos," the virgin and patron goddess of the city. After our Acropolis tour, we'll descend and enter the Ancient Agora located adjacent to the Plaka, the old town of Athens. Among the numerous sights in this archaeological park are the well-preserved Temple of Hephaistos and the landmark Roman era Tower of the Winds. Our guided tour ends with a guided visit of the Acropolis Museum, located at the foot of the Acropolis. The museum was built to house every artifact found on the rock, from the Greek Bronze Age to Roman and Byzantine Greece; nearly 4,000 objects are exhibited over an area of 14,000 square metres. After our tour you are free to wander and explore on your own or make your way back to the hotel with your Tour Leader's assistance. * The exact order of our sightseeing in Athens may be altered by your Tour Leader depending on several variables and their judgement on how best to run today's tour. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Athens - Ferry to Mykonos Early this morning we travel by local ferry from Athens' port, Pireaus, to the island of Mykonos.* From the harbour waterfront, you can watch the local fishing boats, or venture into the labyrinth of dazzling, white-washed streets to the many churches, tavernas, or shops selling artisan crafts. In the distance stand a string of windmills that once harnessed the breezes of days gone by. The sugar cube buildings are stacked around a cluster of seafront fishermen's dwellings. The labyrinth design was intended to confuse the pirates who plagued Mykonos in the eighteenth and 19th centuries. The whitewashed houses concealing dozens of little churches, shrines and chapels. * PORTERS ARE GENERALLY NOT AVAILABLE ON THE GREEK ISLES, OR ON FERRIES BETWEEN THEM. You MUST be able to carry / wheel your baggage on and off ferries. Overnight on Mykonos. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Mykonos: Walking Tour & Boat Trip to Delos This morning we'll take you on an orientation walking tour of Mykonos Chora. We wander the pirate-proof streets of town and see the Paraportiani Church near the quay, an architectural masterpiece of five chapels in one. We then meet the boat that will take us to the tiny sacred island of Delos (40 minutes away). Delos gives the whole group of islands surrounding it their name, the Cyclades -- so named because they form a circle (kyklos) around Delos. For nearly 1,000 years this sanctuary was the political and religious centre of the Aegean. Leto, pregnant by Zeus, gave birth to the twins Apollo and Artemis on Delos. In the 18th century BC, the annual Delia Festival was established on the island to celebrate the birth of Apollo. Delos was populated during its height in Hellenistic times with wealthy merchants, mariners and bankers from as far away as Egypt and Syria. During our guided walking tour of Delos, we will see the Agora of the Competialists, Roman merchants or freed slaves who worshipped the guardian spirits of crossroads; the Sanctuary of Apollo, the three temples of Apollo and the Sanctuary of Dionysus. In the House of the Masks we are able to see a mosaic portraying Dionysus riding on a panthers back. The theatre here could seat 5,500 people. We return to Mykonos where you will have free time to explore Mykonos town on your own. Overnight on Mykonos. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Mykonos - Ferry to Santorini Today we take a ferry or hydrofoil (depending on scheduling) to the island of Santorini. Vast geological upheavals have given this island its unique form resulting in the nickname, "Pre-Historic Pompeii." The effect of terracing makes this unlike any other island, Greece's most visually stunning. Santorini is the island of churches, wine, and donkeys! From as early as 3000 BC the island developed as an outpost of Minoan civilization until around 1650 BC when the volcano erupted. At this point the island's history became linked with the legend of Atlantis. At some point in our visit, we'll stop in at the The Museum of Prehistoric Thera. It was built on the site of the old Ypapanti Church, destroyed in the 1956 earthquake. The museum houses a very large number of ancient artifacts from various excavations on Santorini, such as at Akrotiri and at the nearby Potamos site. Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Santorini: Akrotiri & Island Tour Visually, Santorini is the most spectacular of the Cycladic islands. With its brilliant flooded caldera, high cliffs and charming villages, it is the Greek Isle of everyone's dreams. Our coach tour today will take us to Santorini's many highlights. We begin with a visit to Akrotiri for a thorough guided tour. Excavations have revealed a complete prehistoric Minoan city with squares, streets, and two-storey houses, which contained marvelous frescoes. The buildings date to the late 16th century BC. No skeletons or treasures have been found in Akrotiri, so historians think that the inhabitants were forewarned of the eruption and were able to escape. The excavations have yielded evidence that has revolutionized our knowledge of the Late Bronze Age; indeed the town has been called a "Bronze-age Pompeii." We will also visit the hilltop village of Pyrgos, once the capital of the island and home to more than 30 churches. The village is composed of traditional houses built around the Venetian Castle and the small streets follow the shape of the hill. Climbing from the square up to the castle of Pyrgos, the stone houses crowd more densely together within the labyrinth of narrow vaulted lanes. Our drive around the island will also take us up to the Prophet Elias Monastery built on the highest point of the island in 1711 AD. Though we will not visit inside the monastery, the view from here is breathtaking. Fira is the capital of the island and the most important village. Perched on the edge of an impressive cliff 260m high, the town offers great panoramic views over the submerged volcano. Here the small streets are filled with all kind of shops, cafes, and restaurants. After an orientation walk through the town, you might choose to visit the impressive Archaeological Museum in your spare time (optional). This museum features many artifacts dating back to the time of the Cycladic Civilization. The most impressive legacies of this civilization are the statuettes carved from Parian marble -- the famous Cycladic figurines. Like statuettes of Neolithic times they depicted images of the Great Mother. Other remains include bronze and obsidian tools and weapons, gold jewelry, and stone and clay vases and pots. Return to Kamari Beach (those who wish to extend their time in Fira can return to Kamari using the public bus system). Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Santorini: Fira - Imerovigli - Oia / Free Afternoon This morning we will head to the small town of Oia, situated at the northern tip of the island. We start by taking the public bus to Fira, where we enjoy the stunning caldera views and dramatic setting. From here we will follow the scenic path along the vast caldera rim. Our route leads up through the village of Firostefani and brings us to the village of Imerovigi. The views are ever-changing as the perspective of the island changes minute by minute. We will look out to Skaros, the remains of a Venetian Castle built in 1207 by Marco Sanudo, the ruler of all Cyclades islands that time. From Imerovigli we will continue by bus to Oia (pronounced "EE-ah"). Built on a steep slope of the caldera, many of Oia's dwellings nestle in the niches hewn in the volcanic rock. This was once a major fishing port but is principally known these days as perhaps the most dramatically situated towns in the whole of Greece. The peak of prosperity for this small port town was reached in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. At that time the locally based merchant fleet plied its trade in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially from Alexandria to Russia. The two-story captains' houses built on the highest part of the village are a reminder of the village's former affluence. Oia is a place where many artists have found their inspiration... and here we will wander the narrow streets and old ruins, and enjoy the stunning views of the caldera with panoramic views of the rest of Santorini and the Aegean Sea. After a break for lunch we will return back to Fira and Kamari. We then return to Kamari Beach (those who wish to extend their time in Oia or Fira can return to Kamari using the public bus system). The balance of your day is free to explore on your own, and your Tour Leader will assist with options. Perhaps enjoy some time on one of Santorini's famous black beaches, or hike up to the ruins of Ancient Thira. Overnight on Santorini. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Santorini - Ferry to Iraklion, Crete Today we travel by ferry or hydrofoil (depending on scheduling) to Crete. Crete is the largest and most southerly of the Greek Islands, blessed with a magnificent setting of rugged coastal scenery and warm waters. On arrival we will have an easy walking tour of central Iraklion,* including the impressive St Titus Church, Morosini Fountain and other Venetian legacies. The massive walls that surround the town of Iraklion were built by the Venetians in the mid-15th century. *NOTE: Ferry schedules may require that we have our walking tour tomorrow. Overnight in Iraklion. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Iraklion: Knossos, Archaeological Museum & Lassithi Plateau Early this morning we travel the short distance to Knossos where our local guide will show us the ancient palace of King Minos, first built around 1900 BC. In 1700 BC it was destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt to a grander and more sophisticated design. The city of Knossos consisted of an immense palace, residences of officials and priests, the homes of ordinary people, and burial grounds. The Palace, which covered an area of 22000 sq m (236,682 sq feet), consisted of royal domestic quarters, public reception rooms, shrines, workshops, treasures and storerooms around a central court. Knossos was excavated by Arthur Evans between 1900 and 1930. We also visit the Archaeological Museum in Iraklion, one of the best museums in Greece. The exhibits, collected from excavations carried out in all parts of Crete, come mainly from the prehistoric era and form a valuable record of the artistic, social and economic life of the island during the ancient period. This afternoon we will proceed to the Lassithi Plateau, one of the highpoints of Crete, both in altitude and atmosphere, for it is unique: a green carpet hemmed in on all sides by the Díktean Mountains, snowcapped into April and irrigated in summer by windmills. As the excavations carried out on various sites have shown, this inaccessible area has been inhabited since Neolithic times. The plateau was also farmed by the Minoans and later by the Dorians. In 1293, however, it was such a nest of resistance that the Venetians forced everyone out and demolished the villages. Overnight in Iraklion. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Iraklion - Rethymnon - Chania We leave Iraklion today and travel to Chania via Rethymnon. The old town here still retains its original aristocratic appearance, with buildings dating back to the 16th century as well as Byzantine and Hellenistic-Roman remains and a small Venetian Harbour. We will have some time here to wander and explore and soak up the charming atmosphere. We then continue to Chania via the Akrotiri Peninsula, which rises just north of the bay of Suda, one of the biggest natural harbours in Greece. This peninsula east of Chania was once called Kiamon, and today is associated with the liberation struggles of Crete. While on the peninsula we will visit the monastery of Agia Triada, originally built in the 17th century. Today it is one of the few monasteries in Crete where monastic life is practiced. Chania is a former capital of the island and the site of the ancient Minoan city of Kydonia. In the 13th century, Venice was becoming the maritime master of the eastern Mediterranean. At Chania they built large fortifications against pirates and the Ottoman Turks. Eventually, though, the Ottomans took Chania in the mid-17th century. Today many regard Chania as Crete's most beautiful city. Overnight in Chania. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 11 Chania: Walking Tour This morning we visit the spectacular new (2022) Archaeological Museum before enjoying a walking tour of Chania. During our tour of the old town of Chania, we will pay a visit to the Folklore Museum and explore the wonderful labyrinth of narrow streets in the historic quarter. We will discover "lost" Turkish fountains and bathhouses; quaint medieval backstreets and alleyways; Venetian and Turkish houses; mosques, churches, fortifications, old tradesmen's shops and a host of other gems that are the secrets of this Greek city. Your afternoon is free to enjoy Chania, one of the most picturesque cities in Greece. Overnight in Chania. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12 Chania - Overnight Ferry to Athens Today you may choose to continue your explorations of this charming town, visit the beach, or rent a car (international driving permit NOT required; bring your home driver's license) and further explore the hinterland of western Crete on your own. As you drive around the island, you can turn off the main road almost anywhere and find people in agricultural villages going about their daily routine. Your Tour Leader can help you plan your day. Later this evening we transfer to the port for our overnight ferry to Pireaus, the port of Athens. The ferry is very comfortable with each cabin having two side-by-side beds and private facilities. Overnight ferry to Athens. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Arrival in Athens: National Archaeological Museum Early this morning we arrive in Athens. As our Athens hotel rooms will not be ready for us upon arrival, we will store our luggage at the hotel, enjoy breakfast, and then head out for some morning touring. We will take the metro to the National Archaeological Museum, the largest museum in Greece, situated outside the main tourist neighborhood of Plaka. With some of the greatest collections of antiquities in the world, this museum was established in 1829 to house and protect antiquities from all over Greece. The museum is housed in an imposing neoclassical building dating from the end of the 19th century. The best way to appreciate this museum is at your own pace, allowing you to focus on the exhibits you find most interesting; we especially recommend the Cycladic Room, an excellent way to end your visit to the islands. Your tour leader will then accompany you back to the hotel via metro, and your afternoon is free to enjoy this lively city. Overnight in Athens. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 14 Departure Departure from Athens. KALO TAXIDI/BON VOYAGE! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Breakfast and dinner (mostly local restaurants) daily. All transport, accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters. Airport transfers for land & air customers and for early arriving / late departing land & air customers who book their extra hotel nights through us.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuities, lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), international air taxes (if applicable), and excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on optional meal costs and shopping.

Seasonality and Weather This tour is offered in spring, summer, and fall, the most popular being spring and fall when temperatures are milder, crowds thinner, and airfares lower. Spring is popular for green landscapes and wildflowers; beachgoers prefer fall sea temperatures. The region has a Mediterranean climate with early springs, long hot and dry summers, and autumns that are bright and warm into mid-October. Showers are possible in spring, rare in summer, and possible in late fall.

Transport and Travel Conditions This is not a cruise! We travel to/between islands via local ferries, which can range from hydrofoils to large vehicle carrying vessels. Greek ferry schedules tend to change without notice; some itinerary adjustments may be necessary at the discretion of your Tour Leader. Uncontrollable factors such as weather may result in delays. Land transport (city & island tours, port transfers) by private air-conditioned motor coach, 24-36 seats depending on group size (see 'group size'); some local buses and taxis.' Porter service is rarely available on the islands (see 'inclusions'); you MUST be independent with your luggage, especially getting on/off ferries. This trip is typical of most of our European tours, which are ambitious and involve full days of travel and sightseeing. While we don't have any actual strenuous activity (ie hiking) built into the program, you will do a lot of walking on this trip. These walks will mostly be in the form of walking tours of towns and cities and short walks to dinner. Being Europe, and a hilly/mountainous area, cobbles, uneven surfaces, and slopes/stairs are common. If you are accustomed to typical "bus tours," which rely heavily on vehicular transport for all sightseeing activities, you should be aware that this tour is considerably more active.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

Accommodation Well-located, air-conditioned, mid-range hotels (3-star) throughout. Island hotels are smaller properties (3-4 story) that will likely not have elevators. All hotels have en suite bath, though most have shower only. A special note about Santorini, which is primarily a luxury tourism destination and, while we can confidently promise our visit will be fulfilling and rewarding, one's hotel expectations must be in line with our overall purpose, which is sightseeing and cultural experience and not focused on the "hotel experience" per se. Single rooms are limited and likely smaller than twins. Overnight ferry 2-person cabins with a/c and en suite toilet / shower (singles available).

Staff and Support Tour Leader throughout, driver (s), local step-on local guides in various locales.

Group Size Maximum 18 plus Tour Leader

Island hopping: Athens - Santorini - Crete

1-santorini-dsc8020

Island-hopping packages are individual tours and not group tours. They do not include flights from/to your country.

General Description

Santorini and Crete are both world-famous for different reasons on each island. Santorini is the top destination in Greece and is famous for the sunken caldera , the still active volcano , the cliff-side villages, and the most romantic sunset that attracts millions of couples every year. In fact, due to the gorgeous landscape and the magnificent sunset, Santorini is such a popular wedding location. Crete, on the other side, has a less impressive landscape but a calm, family atmosphere. Heraklion and Chania are distinguished for their Venetian architecture, the Old Towns, and the close beaches. At a close distance to Heraklion, there is the Minoan Palace of Knossos with colorful wall paintings and good space planning. If you have time and want to drive around in Crete, you will find amazing sceneries to steal your heart: from small mountainous villages and calm beaches to impressive gorges, secret caves, and hidden archaeological sites. Crete is the most interesting place for alternative vacations.

CRETE – AEGEAN ODYSSEY TOURS

Come and have an affair with me on the island of crete, greece.

greek island tour from crete

Crete changes people and they return again and again and again!

“The most amazing holiday ever”. Mary-Anne Lines. September 2019

“Ou r tour of Crete was a very well organised and a very enjoyable insight into Cretan history, culture and food and we would highly recommend the tour to anyone who asks.

“We joined Francesca Muir on her tour of Crete – An Aegean Odyssey in September 2019 and from the moment we arrived we had such a fantastic time that it was very hard to leave this beautiful island.

“From Agios Nikolaos to Chania, each day provided a new adventure in discovering this amazing place. Fran provided a well thought-out tour and everything ran smoothly. Each of the meals provided gave us a new taste of Cretan food, from breakfasts overlooking the beach in Agios, to lunches in monasteries and wineries, and dinners in some stunning locations. Highlights included a cooking class in the mountains and a Minoan feast prepared by Jerolyn Morrison, an anthropologist, archaeologist and potter with an expertise in Minoan cooking and food. We also swam in the beautiful crystal waters of the Aegean Sea, visited museums, olive farms, quaint little villages and much more.

“All our local tour guides were fantastic as they shared their great knowledge and passion for their specialities. We were guided through Gournia, Spinalonga and Knossos, monasteries, wineries, and a walking tour of Chania and Kritsa.

“We would travel with Fran again in a heartbeat. She is extremely passionate about Crete and it certainly showed on our tour.   Our hotels in Agios and Chania were great locations, the food amazing and the small group tour suited us with the pace very relaxed and not rushed, which allowed us to enjoy the pleasures of Crete as we discovered them.

“Prior to the tour we had visited Athens and Santorini. Fran also provided wonderful information on where to stay, where to eat and what to see in these locations, which was invaluable to the overall enjoyment of our whole trip.” Deirdre and David Lee. 2019

“Both my wife and I declare that our trip to Santorini and Crete was one of THE most memorable trips we have enjoyed over the years. The level of enjoyment comes from the excellent organisation by Francesca Muir. The skill Francesca has in knowing the local places and people and the language was amazing. We received the best tables in restaurants and the best attention – all because Francesca spoke the language and opened doors that would be difficult for any ordinary tourist. She is a natural and with her personality and knowledge she is THE BEST person to show you her beloved Greece.” Tom Sweeney. 2008

“I am writing to thank you for the wonderful Greek holiday we had that you so expertly organised. From the moment we touched down at Santorini airport to the time we left Crete, it was perfect. We loved Crete for the food and wine and places of interest that you showed us. A particular favourite of mine was Spinalonga, the old leper island near Elounda, so laden with history and sadness but a must for visitors. I also was in awe of Knossos, the old Minoan ruins, also another must see. The cost of the holiday was very reasonable thanks to you getting the best bargains available. I highly recommend you to anyone thinking of going to Greece as your knowledge is spot on and I look forward to doing it again with you.” John Tilbrook. 2008

“If you want to travel with a small group to Crete, have fun, eat great food, enjoy a relaxed itinerary and sometimes do the unexpected, Francesca Muir’s tour must be your choice.” Diana Curtis. 2018

“Travelling with Francesca to Crete was a life-changing experience – her knowledge, passion and insight into  Cretan life made our trip one our family will never forget.” Celia Harper. 2015

Make 2024 your most memorable yet – come and join me on a Greek Easter tour of Crete, for a heady two weeks of deliciousness as we head off the beaten tracks and into the heart of the island.

My affair with the island began more than 30 years ago and I’ve been in love with her ever since, for she changed me forever and has become my spiritual home.  She leaves an indelible print on people, and I have yet to meet anyone who is not equally besotted with her and all she has to offer and who promise to return– and they do, time and time again.

To this end, I take small personal tours to the island where we dip in and out of her culture and explore her culinary depths. We visit traditional villages where the locals live as they have for centuries, and almost travel the length of the island where you can see firsthand the snow-tipped mountains, deep gorges, fertile valleys and sublime beaches snuggling up to azure seas.

I believe the best way to get to know a place is by immersing yourself in the local culture, meeting the locals who will regale you with stories about their history and lives, and getting off the well-worn tourist tracks. Though we will, of course, visit the Minoan Palace of Knossos and the island of Spinalonga, which was the site of the last leper colony in Europe.

I am not a tour guide. I am a tour coordinator.  I ensure that your trip is seamless and stress-free, and I employ professional, fully accredited guides along the way. I take only small groups on my tours to Crete, to give you a very personal insight into the island that lies at the heart of the Mediterranean diet and the cradle of civilization thanks to the ingenuity of the Minoan Civilization.

A TINY ISLAND WITH A BIG HISTORY AND EVEN BIGGER HEART

This tiny island (it can fit into the island of Tasmania more than eight times) has contributed more to Western Civilization than any other place its size. It’s a mythological island – think Minotaur and Labyrinth, Daedalus and Icarus, the lost city of Atlantis and the birthplace of Zeus. Crete gave Europe its name. It’s also home to the oldest living, fruit-bearing olive tree believed to be 4000 years old.

Located between the Aegean and Libyan Sea, it’s an island of contradictions. A huge mountain range crosses from east to west and in the western region it’s snow-capped all year round – hence its name the Lefka Ori – The White Mountains. It boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece – some only accessible by boat – vast fertile plains, deep gorges and to this day, many areas of the south coast remain wild and untameable.

It has a history dating back 9000 years and been the envy of the Mycenaean’s, Romans, Byzantines, Saracens, Venetian, Ottomans, Egyptians, Turks, Germans and now tourists.  So much so, some have invaded more than once!

Nonetheless Cretans have remained true to their Minoan roots and are resourceful, proud, hospitable and fiercely independent. They consider themselves Cretan first and then Greek – the island only officially became part of Greece in 1913. They are hospitable, passionate, fiercely loyal and unafraid to show their emotions – like Zorba, a happy Cretan is not ashamed to stop his car in the middle of the road, turn up the music and dance.

For Cretans, the secret to a long and healthy life is very simple – eat anything and everything that the rich soil produces. The basis of their diet, and the basis of the Mediterranean Diet, is fruit, vegetables, greens, fresh produce, legumes, cheese and bread. Wild herbs such as oregano, thyme and sage are used in abundance, their sweets and desserts use local honey, and all meals are eaten with excellent local wine.  The scent of the wild herbs baking on the Cretan hillsides in summer is intoxicating.

But by far the best ingredient of the famous Cretan diet is the locally produced olive oil. Thick, aromatic, and luscious green, it’s good enough to eat on its own with crusty bread, and it’s what gives local Cretan dishes their exquisite flavours.

Eating is also an essential part of Cretan custom and hospitality.  The biggest problem is deciding where and what to eat. Tavernas offer a grand selection of Cretan delicacies, Ouzeries offer Mezzes (nibbles) and Raki (the local brew, commonly known as firewater ), fish tavernas offer whatever is fresh from the waters surrounding Crete and don’t forget the good old Gyros Pitas , tasty lamb or pork souvlakia , lettuce, tomato, chips and tzatzik i in a wrap.  Delicious!

I can promise you every day will be delicious, and every day will be different!

15 Best Greece Islands To Visit!

Teeming with ancient history and set against stunning backdrops, the Greek islands are unlike any other place on Earth.

They attract every type of traveller, from backpackers to celebrities, all looking to bask in the relaxed way of life, take in the stunning scenery, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea.

Having lived, studied, and vacationed in Greece, I’ve had the opportunity to visit quite a few Greek Islands, which only scratches the surface; there are 6,000 islands in total, though only 227 Greek Islands are inhabited.

Hopping around the Greek islands you’ll quickly learn that every island has its own unique personality and story to tell. But since we don’t all have the luxury of being able to see them all, here is our list of the best Greece Islands to visit!

4. Santorini (Thira)

11. zakynthos, 15. kastellorizo, final thoughts on the best greek islands, more greece travel tips, the best greece islands to visit.

This quirky Greek island is the only of its kind that outlaws vehicles, so you will need to get around on foot or by using one of the island’s donkeys.

In the past, Hydra, or Ydra or Idra as it’s also known, drew acclaim for being an artist/writer’s colony, but these days it’s more frequented by Athenian city-dwellers on weekend getaways.

The large majority of Hydra’s population lives in the center of town where all of the tavernas and restaurants can be found. Come to this Greek island expecting a quiet retreat and stunning Venetian architecture.

It’s a small island and doesn’t take long to explore, which makes it perfect for those looking for a Greece Island to visit for a weekend.

It’s also very near to Athens, which makes it a great island to visit on a day trip from mainland Greece if you are short on time. Here is a 7-day itinerary of the Peloponnese region while in this area.

Tip : Do not rely on Hydra to be a beach escape, as they are found sparingly and are extremely rocky.

  • Check out places to stay in Hydra here!
  • Check out tours of Hydra on Get Your Guide.

Aegina is only a quick 30-minute hydrofoil ride from the main port of Piraeus making it an easy choice for tourists who are seeing Athens sights but don’t have the time to island-hop.

The beaches on this Greek Island are rather lackluster, but the center is filled with cute cafés perfect for escaping the summer heat.

Aegina is famous for its production of pistachios, be sure to pick up a bag from one of the many shops located near the port.

Don’t expect anything remotely resembling mass tourism from Evia, the second-largest island in Greece and the ancient home of Aristotle .

Evia is composed of several quaint villages, fishing towns, and coastal resorts and offers a truly authentic slice of Grecian life.

If you’re looking for the best Greece Islands to visit for beaches, then you’ll find some beautiful ones here. It’s also known for having a year-round warm climate, so no matter what time of year you plan your vacation, you can expect warm days here.

Chilaro beach in the village of Vitalo is hands-down the most serene, beautiful beach I’ve seen in all of my travels. Ask locals how to find it.

Undoubtedly one of the most famous of Greece’s islands, Thira (as it’s known to the Greeks) balances jaw-dropping beauty and intriguing ancient history with a lively party scene and is truly the island that offers something for everyone.

As part of the Sporades Islands, Santorini boasts incredible landscapes with high cliffs, dropping into the wild ocean below. Many of the island’s town have been built onto the side of the cliff, which gives the island that iconic postcard backdrop.

Oia is the town of all the typical Grecian images of white churches with blue domes. It is a bit isolated at the northern tip of the island and is a great place for older couples and families to stay.

Seeing the sunset in Oia is an absolute must!

Fira , the main town, and Perissa , where the black sand beach is located are the best places to go out. Akrotiri, the site of the red sand beach and ancient Minoan ruins make for a great day trip.

Ios, otherwise known as Io or Nio, has a hedonistic reputation as a party island and it attracts young crowds looking for nightlife.

That being said, it’s surprisingly relaxing (without losing its sense of fun) outside of high season. It’s a small island with a population of less than 3,000, so if you want a quieter vacation, this is the place for you.

If you really want to avoid the crowds, head to the beaches furthest from Chora for a truly tranquil experience.

Ios is a hilly island known for its rugged landscape. Think craggy cliffs dropping into the wild sea. Since it’s only 18km in length, it’s easy to explore.

Tip: Pack a picnic and hike to the churches on the top of the hill in the old town’s (Chora) center for a 360 panoramic view of Ios in time to catch the sunset.

The playground of elite jet-setters in years past, Mykonos has retained its glamour while still charming in every way.

The center is a maze of narrow cobble-stoned streets that buzz with energy deep into the night when the bars and clubs open and are bustling during the day with shoppers. The famous windmills and little Venice (pictured) are a must-see as they are just as beautiful in person as in photos.

Get to know the local side of Mykonos away from the tourists with a guided tour to small villages, farms, and secret beaches!

Tip : The meltemi winds that surface in high season are fiercest in Mykonos, which offers little natural shelter so bring a sweater even if you’re coming in August.

Agricultural at its core, Naxos offers some of the best beaches on the Aegean (and dare I say, the Mediterranean) and a lively beach promenade and town center. It hasn’t lost its charm, likely because it isn’t reliant upon tourism like so many of the other Greek islands are.

Since it’s located in the heart of the popular chain of Cycladic islands, Naxos makes an excellent base for island hopping in Greece.

Make sure to see the ruins of Apollo’s Gate near the port (pictured above.)

Consider a full-day tour of the island which includes highlights of visiting the oldest distillery, ancient greek temples, wandering through the famous marble village of Apiranthos, and much more!

Tip: Naxos is big and therefore, the ideal place to rent a moped and explore its more isolated beaches and countryside.

Corfu is one of the Ionian Islands in the Ionian Sea, and is made up of stunning beaches and rugged mountains.

It’s world-class resorts attract thousands of visitors each year, but there is more to the island than staying in your all-inclusive luxury hotels.

The island has an interesting architecture, which reflects its years under Venetian, French and British rule. The most beautiful architecture is that of the Venetian castle in Corfu Town, which is surrounded by cobbled streets and medieval alleyways.

Rhodes is the largest island in the group of Dodecanese islands and is well known for its luxury hotels and beach resorts.

For those looking to sit back and relax on a sandy beach, this is the Greece Island to visit.

Other than beaches, Rhodes has ancient ruins that date back to the Crusades, as well as medieval buildings in the Old Town – the most striking of which are on theStreet of the Knights.

If you’re a foodie fan, Rhodes is a great place to find some delicious, fresh Greek cuisine, paired with local wines.

Crete is Greece’s largest island and is packed full of things to see and do. Do not miss a chance to check out the archaeological sites and explore the ancient ruins of Aptera and Malia.

The most popular attraction on the island, besides its beaches, is the Palace of Knossos in Heraklion.

If you don’t want to spend your days on the beach and fancy doing some hiking, then head out to the 16km-long Samariá Gorge that has more than 50 canyons to explore. The Aradena Gorge is also a great hike on the island which takes you to Marmara, a beautiful cove on the Libyan Sea.

For those looking for a quieter side of Crete, head to Chania. This small port-city is known for its 14th-century Venetian harbor, as well as its beautiful narrow streets lined with venetian architecture.

You won’t find waters as blue as the ones in Zakynthos, which is a Greece Island all about the water. The main city, Zakynthos, is a harbor city where all the goings-on happen around the waterfront of Solomos Square.

If you want to soak up the sun, head to the nearby beaches of Agios Nikolaos, Alykanas and Tsilivi. The most famous beach of all is Navagio Beach, which houses a shipwreck that sits in a sheltered cove, protected by cliffs.

Zakynthos is also a popular diving destination , since much of its marine landscape has been unspoiled, you can dive through sea caves or at popular turtle spots, where the endangered Caretta sea turtle comes to mate.

It’s the perfect place to spot wildlife. If you’re lucky, you may even see some baby monk seals playing in the waters.

Syros is small but it packs a punch, which is why it’s one of our favourite Greece Islands to visit! It was once a very wealthy city and was constructed by European architects during the Renaissance period, so its archiecture is simply stunning and vastly unique compared to other Greek Islands.

It’s also home to several stunning beaches, coves and hidden bays. It’s known for having a vibrant nightlife scene, but it’s more sophisticated than the backpacker bars or Santorini or Mykonos.

You’ll find plenty of jazz bars, taverns and wine bars playing elegant piano music, as The Apollon Theatre hosts an annual classical musical, jazz and contemporary music festival.

For this reason, it’s one of the best Greece Islands to visit for couples.

Located next door to Naxos is Paros, home to the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a famous Byzantine church that dates back to the 4th century A.D.

As well as some historical attractions to discover, Paros offers a similar vibe to Mykonos and Naxos, with white-washed buildings, world-class restaurants and bars, and a buzzing nightlife scene.

Like most Greek islands, Paros is also known for its beaches, but as well as soft sandy beaches, there are also some naturally formed coves that you can swim in at Kolimbithres Beach which is one of the most famous places to visit on the island.

UNESCO World Heritage site of Delos is a hidden gem in the Greek islands. The whole island is an archaeological site, and is famous for being the mythological birthplace of Apollo.

In its prime, it was a major religious center and its ruins date it back to the 1st millennium B.C.

Visitors can see the ruins of Doric temples, ancient markets, an amphitheater, as well as several houses with mosaics. The most famous landmark is the iconic Terrace of the Lions statues.

You can learn more about the excavations and history at The Archaeological Museum.

While you cannot stay on Delos, you can get a ferry from Mykonos and take a day trip there.

Although not as famous as the other Greece Islands to visit on this list, Kastellorizo is a hidden gem that’s perfect for a quiet getaway.

It’s famous for being the location of the Oscar-nominated movie, Mediterraneo, about Italian soldiers who washed up on a remote Greek island during WWII that was filmed in 1991.

The most famous attraction on the island is the Blue Grotto, or the Blue Caves, which are located on the southeast coast. They are famous for the bright blue reflection created by light seeping into the cave’s entrance, bouncing off the waters inside. You can swim inside the cave when the tide is out.

At only 10 square kilometers, you will find this is one of the most remote islands in the Greek Islands, but is easily accessible by ferry from Rhodes.
