Stewart Beach Stewart Beach

Stewart Beach is one of the most popular strips of sand in Galveston, and with its host of beachside amenities, it's no wonder. There are lifeguards, restrooms, showers, concession stands, plus chair and umbrella rentals – and even a playground for kids. Recent visitors appreciated this beach's large parking lot and loads of amenities, as well as the beach's proximity to the  Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier .

The Strand The Strand free

The Strand is a five-block, National Historic Landmark District featuring shops, galleries, bars and restaurants housed in 19th-century buildings in downtown Galveston. As you walk along its strip, you'll get an idea of what Galveston was like back in its heyday. Look for placards highlighting the district's historical must-sees, such as the Grand 1894 Opera House , which is still an operating theater.

Visitors to The Strand remarked on the architecture of the buildings, and some of the cute shops and restaurants, not to mention the vendors that sell beer and ice cream, which you can enjoy on the sidewalks. However, some recent travelers said you had to weed through a bunch of ho-hum souvenir shops to find the real gems.

East Beach East Beach

Located at the easternmost point of Galveston, East Beach is a wide swath of sand that welcomes visitors to relax and soak up the sun or partake in the many ongoing events and festivals throughout the year. A few popular summertime events travelers may want to check out include the annual American Institute of Architects Sandcastle Competition, where artists build intricate and impressive structures out of sand, and the live concerts on the entertainment stage. This beach features numerous amenities, such as a pavilion, restrooms with showers, beach chair and umbrella rentals, beach volleyball courts, lifeguards and a boardwalk. Concessions are also available, where visitors can purchase food and drinks (including alcohol). Leashed pets are also allowed on this beach. Keep in mind, glass is prohibited and tents and tarps are only permitted in specific areas.

Recent beachgoers appreciated this clean beach and noted it's great for walking. Visitors say East Beach is a convenient option in Galveston, and many appreciate the on-site amenities available here. You can also watch the cruise ships sail in and out of Galveston's port from this beach, which many said was a fun activity. A few were disappointed about the rules regarding tents and tarps (you're not allowed to have them particularly close to the ocean).

East End Historical District East End Historical District free

Gorgeous pastel-hued houses line flower- and tree-filled streets in Galveston's East End Historical District, which stretches across more than 50 blocks in the city center. This charming area was Galveston's first residential neighborhood and it is home to some of the best-preserved 19th-century residential architecture in Texas. The scenic spot is on the National Register of Historic Places – and it's a popular neighborhood for visitors and locals to peruse. Travelers might also notice the neighborhood's tree sculptures: Artists took advantage of debris and uprooted trees left behind from Hurricane Ike's wake in 2008 and created whimsical sculptures (think: dolphins, dogs, alligators, geishas, guitars, mermaids and more) from the remains.

The nonprofit East End Historical District Association is dedicated to "preserving, restoring and protecting the cultural and architectural integrity" of the neighborhood, and the entity owns several of the homes in the district. The EEHDA also hosts numerous fundraising events in the area throughout the year as well, including the popular fall garden and holiday home tours.

Bishop's Palace Bishop's Palace

Bishop's Palace – also known as Gresham's Castle – was commissioned by Col. Walter Gresham, an attorney and entrepreneur, and designed by one of Galveston's famous architects, Nicholas Clayton, at the turn of the 19th century. In 1923, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Galveston bought the building, using it as a bishop's residence until 1963 (hence the name, Bishop's Palace). The Victorian home – a National Historic Landmark – is now open to the public for tours and is filled with architectural treasures, such as an all-silver fireplace, bronze dragons and stained-glass windows.

Recent visitors described the house as "magnificent" and "grand" and were especially complimentary of the attraction's gift shop, which is housed within several rooms of the palace's basement. Most said a visit here is worth every penny of the admission price. However, some cautioned that children may not find this attraction interesting.

The Grand 1894 Opera House The Grand 1894 Opera House

This incredibly ornate theater hosts musical and art performances year-round, showcasing everything from Broadway musicals and concerts to dance performances and comedy shows. The Grand 1894 Opera House is an impressive and historical Galveston landmark: It has survived numerous storms and hurricanes, it's been restored and refurbished, and it's one of the few remaining theaters of its era. As such, this beautiful theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it enjoys recognition as "The Official Opera House of Texas." The theater seats 1,000 and features plush navy cushioned chairs framed in wood, intricate detailing on the walls and carpet, and a grand ruby red curtain on its stage.

Past visitors say there's not a bad seat in the house at this theater and many appreciate the acoustics and intimate setting. Several patrons highly recommend catching a show here, so plan to look at the calendar of events to see if there's anything that piques your interest when you're in town.

Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston Schlitterbahn Waterpark Galveston

Located about 5 miles west of downtown Galveston, this 26-acre water park offers plenty of fun for visitors and is especially popular with families. Schlitterbahn Waterpark is home to numerous water playground areas, several pools, a zip line and dozens of waterslides. The waterslides are the standout attractions here: The Screaming Serpents are side-by-side racing slides, the thrilling Cliffhanger body slide plunges 81 feet, the Thunder Tub raft slide takes three-person tubes through dips and twists, and the Massiv Monster Blaster water coaster takes riders on a twisting, turning, splash-filled journey via tube. Schlitterbahn's website classifies the "thrill level" of each attraction, so daredevils can make sure to hit the most exhilarating waterslides and families can make sure to head toward the more relaxing or low-impact attractions. The water park also features cabanas for rent and several dining options (ranging from pizza to barbecue to ice cream), plus it occasionally hosts events.

Recent travelers say a visit here makes for a fun day for families, especially those with teens and young children. Visitors particularly enjoyed the lazy rivers and the thrilling water slide options. A few expressed disappointment that some attractions were not open when they visited, so you may want to call ahead to make sure most of the options are open before scheduling your trip.

It dates back to 1895 and is filled with historical artifacts and beautifully decorated rooms. Visitors can tour 20 rooms across the four-floor home, which feature the furniture and curios collected by the family over their 86 years of living there.

Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier

The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is a wharf that juts out from the Texas Gulf Coast. Here you'll find amusement park rides, shops and eateries. The Pleasure Pier is also a study in resilience: It was originally built in the 1940s, but in 1961 Hurricane Carla completely destroyed it; later in 2008, Hurricane Ike severely damaged it too, and in 2017 Hurricane Harvey battered it with wind and waves. Still, it's up and running once again. Rides available include a rollercoaster and a Ferris wheel, and there are multiple eateries located on the pier, serving everything from barbecue to pizza to ice cream and milkshakes.

Recent visitors said visiting the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is a great activity for the whole family, though they also caution that the rides and businesses along the boardwalk are pricey. If you're not interested in the rides or games, reviewers still recommend Pleasure Pier for its people-watching and Gulf Coast views. Plus, you'll find plenty of places to sit along the boardwalk.

Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry free

To travel from Galveston Island to the Port Bolivar peninsula – or to simply see the sights along the way, which is what most visitors seem to do – the ferry is the way to go. One of the greatest things about the ferry, which is operated by the Texas Department of Transportation, is that it's free.

Recent visitors said the trip is a great activity, as well as mode of transportation, since along the way you might spot dolphins in the water and seagulls in the sky. Many recommend this as an activity to do with kids, as they enjoy the birds and the boating experience. Others warn that the ferry is prone to long waits in the summer, but they recommend persevering even still.

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum

A museum on offshore drilling may not sound like the most enticing thing to see on your trip to Galveston, but visitors say it's quite a hidden gem. Recent museumgoers describe the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum as "fascinating," "fun" and "interesting." The museum is located on a retired oil rig in the Galveston Channel and features a variety of interactive exhibits to help visitors learn more about offshore drilling and the oil and gas industry. The tours are self-guided and begin with an introductory video. Travelers can then explore the three floors of the museum and its exhibits, and the two exterior areas of the rig.

What's more, the second Saturday of each month is the museum's Family Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., which is focused on different themes surrounding the oil and gas industry. There are hands-on displays and fun experiments presented that make it easier for young visitors to learn, plus anyone 18 or younger can enter for free with a paying adult during Family Days. The Bryan Museum The Bryan Museum

Home to a variety of art, artifacts, interactive displays and more, The Bryan Museum invites visitors to explore the story of Texas and the American West. The museum, which opened in 2015, got its name from J.P. Bryan who – at 10 years old – acquired two antique firearms, then started a rare book and printing business in college, continued to amass eclectic art and literature, and the collection grew from there. The pieces showcased in this collection span 12,000 years, including artifacts and art from ancient Native Americans, 20,000 rare books and rare maps, antique firearms, thousands of documents in a variety of languages and 21st-century objects. The permanent collection also includes numerous pieces of fine art, portraits, religious art and folk art. The Bryan Museum hosts rotating exhibits and special collections as well; before your visit, you should check what offerings are available. The museum often features after-hours events and programs on-site, such as wine nights and a few history series. What's more – the museum itself is located in the historic Galveston Orphans Home, surrounded by beautiful flora, and occupies a Renaissance revival-style building.

Those who love Texas history or history in general should pencil in a visit to The Bryan Museum, according to reviewers. Many previous museumgoers say they weren't expecting such an interesting and wide range of exhibits, and several say the staff members were particularly knowledgeable and helpful.

The museum also hosts several events throughout the year, including holiday celebrations and kid-focused programs. Recent visitors said they found this museum to be particularly interesting and informative, and many said if you're already a train buff this is a must-visit attraction. Many also really enjoyed the train ride and said that although it was short, it was worth the extra fee.

25 Things to Do in Galveston, Texas (+ What to Avoid!)

March 14, 2024 February 7, 2024

Galveston, Texas, is an easy and super popular destination from Houston for folks looking to escape all that wild traffic for a bit and live on island time.

That’s what we were looking for on our trip, and Galveston delivered…mostly.

Whether you’re traveling with the family, with your pet, or on a solo adventure, Galveston and all of its dreamy pelicans are pretty darn great.

Use my guide for the best things to do in Galveston, Texas, on your next trip to this Gulf Coast city. I’ll include information on what you should avoid, too, as we’re all friends here.

What is Galveston known for?

Galveston is known for its beaches, historic Victorian architecture, and its lively pier. It’s big with travelers from Houston and other cities within a short drive interested in a weekend trip for relaxation and recreation.

A woman poses with her dog on a Galveston pier, one of the top things to do in Galveston.

How do I spend a day in Galveston?

You can spend a day in Galveston by hitting the beach, eating some Gulf shrimp, and exploring the historical side of town.

If you’re driving from Houston as we did, leave early no matter when you’re visiting. Traffic out of Houston is bad on weekdays and weekends from what we experienced.

Expect the trip to take about an hour, even less if you’re coming straight from the Houston airport.

Once you get there, parking is fairly easy, although you may have to pay to park at some of the more popular destinations. We didn’t have any trouble throughout the day finding spots, though, and all of the big beaches have dedicated parking lots.

What are things to do in Galveston, Texas?

Things to do in Galveston, Texas, include a wealth of outdoor and water activities, mansions with historical intrigue, and fresh seafood to partake in when hunger sets in.

I will admit our day trip to Galveston from Houston started a little rough. I got bit by a fire ant, people. I can only confirm that it was a fire ant because I plucked it off my foot after I felt a burning sensation where it decided to have itself a little snack.

Things only went up from there, because how could they not have?

In any case, come prepared when planning your own Galveston activities. There are fire ants out there. Mind those anthills.

Interested in a Galveston tourist map of everything I’ll highlight here? Follow the Google link below.

GIMME MY GALVESTON ATTRACTIONS MAP!

1. ride the galveston-bolivar ferry..

A ferry boat out at sea, one of the best things to do in Galveston

The Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry is a scenic and convenient option for getting across the Galveston Bay. It operates 24/7 as long as the weather is cooperating with opportunities for birdwatching and dolphin sightings.

I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet. Trips are free for passengers and vehicles in case you’re bringing a ride. You can ride from Galveston Island to the Bolivar Peninsula without paying a dime.

2. Get caffeinated at the best Galveston coffee shops.

I’m not a big breakfast person, but I do need coffee to kick off my days. Start off your day at one of Galveston’s best coffee shops. Here are a few:

  • MOD Coffeehouse : This one has won all kinds of small business awards for its coffee and ambiance. Pick up a latte and a baked good or two at this atmospheric local favorite.
  • Go Nuts and Beans : Come for the coffee beans, but stay for the peanut butters. This place sells all kinds of funky nut spreads like a sweet and spicy jalapeno variety.
  • Sugar Bean Coffee and Cream : Order up specialty lattes or any of the house-brewed coffees at this small shop, popular with locals and students.

3. Visit historic Seawolf Park.

A historic park, one of the top things to do in Galveston

You’ll be back on Galveston Island shortly, but if you have any interest in Seawolf Park, early in the day is the time to visit this historic site on nearby Pelican Island.

We paid a few dollars just to park here as we had the pup with us so couldn’t hit the naval museum. I highly recommend a visit whether you’re here to explore the USS Seawolf or not.

Fun fact: The USS Seawolf is a U.S. Navy submarine that was mistakenly sunk by its own forces during World War II.

If you’re not here to tour the sub, you’ll still have access to the pier, the sunken “pride of Texas” off the coast, and all of the pelican photography you can handle.

For a couple of bucks, you can also do some good fishing here. We saw at least three different folks catch decent-sized fish on our stroll through the park.

You’ll head back to the main island from here. Don’t be too sad about the scenery on your way. It’s all oil rigs and the like until you get back to Galveston Island proper and all of the fun things to do in Galveston, Texas.

4. Walk The Strand.

A man walks The Strand, one of the top things to do in Galveston.

Looking for things to do in Galveston for free? The Strand historic district spans five blocks in the heart of Galveston. This is the island’s hub for dining, entertainment, and all of the tchotchke shops of your dreams.

Many of the Victorian-style buildings you’ll see on your stroll around here are over 100 years old. We walked the Strand in its entirety then headed to the water.

5. Check out the boats at Galveston Harbor.

A statue and ship at a harbor, one of the best things to do in Galveston

The harbor area and Pier 21 are where you’ll access a few of the most popular Galveston, Texas, attractions.

If you want to see some wildlife action on the water, book a trip on the Seagull II through Historic Harbor Tour and Dolphin Watch. The boat tours seemed reasonably priced, but I didn’t have my seasickness meds on me during our visit and we had our dog Kimmy with us.

This is also where you’ll see the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig & Museum. I’ll be honest. I knew we weren’t going to do this one on our Galveston tour. If you have any interest in learning more about the history of the offshore oil and gas industry, this may be your jam.

Note: We noticed that during our stay in Houston and the state of Texas in general that you’ll come across exhibits and attractions bought and paid for by the oil industry. Just be aware that this is a thing here, and make your own judgments from there.

6. Meet the historic tall ship Elissa .

A closeup of the tall ship Elissa, one of the best things to do in Galveston

You’ll likely spot the tall ship Elissa & the Texas Seaport Museum from wherever you land along the harbor. The National Historic Landmark is a floating museum for much of the year, with harbor cruises offered in the springtime.

Elissa comes to Galveston courtesy of Scotland. She was a merchant vessel in Aberdeen during a time when steamships were starting to take over sailing ships. Nevertheless, she persisted, and she has quite a few long sea voyages under her belt.

The ship today is one of only three of her kind in the world to still actively sail. She’s a big deal is what I’m saying, and a stop just to see her from the outside should be on your Galveston to-do list.

7. Have lunch with beach views.

I like to tell it like it is on the blog, and that includes places to avoid in Galveston.

We chose the Tipsy Turtle Seaside Bar & Grill as our chosen lunch spot while on the island. It was recommended by other dog owners who’d been to Galveston, and right on the beach.

The menu looked basic but just right with lots of shrimp options, the local specialty. I came here for shrimp, people.

We arrived right after they opened, and got a spot on the breezy patio. All of the signage they have up is hilarious and fitting with the beachy vibes.

A dog poses in front of funny signage at a beach bar, one of the best things to do in Galveston.

We had to wait a while for life to materialize behind the bar and say to Brian, “Are you OK?”

No, m’am. He’d like to order, as you’ve now been open for about 20 minutes.

Well, order he did…or at least tried to do. THEY WERE OUT OF SHRIMP.

Note: We’d passed by about a dozen shrimp shacks on our way to this place, as it was a bit off-the-beaten-path, so we know there wasn’t any kind of local shrimp shortage. They had signs up all over the place bragging on their blackened shrimp, too.

I got a mediocre BLT, instead — but why the onions and American cheese?? — and Brian got some school cafeteria chicken tenders. They messed up my side, too. What’s a girl gotta do for some slaw around here?

The only highlight was the beach stroll we took after. It’s much calmer on this side of the island if you’re interested in beach options with fewer tourists.

Beachfront properties line the beach in Galveston. Walking the beach is one of the best things to do in Galveston.

For food, though, try any of these places, instead:

  • Yaga’s Cafe : This place was packed every time we walked by on our exploration of the historic Strand district. Expect fresh salads, soups, sandwiches, and fish tacos.
  • The Spot : This place features locally sourced seafood and burgers in a huge space on the Galveston Seawall. You’re primed for some excellent people-watching here, too.
  • The Poop Deck: If you’re traveling with kids, does it get any funnier? You’ll know you’re there when you see the life-sized Statue of Liberty out front.

8. Tour the Moody Mansion.

A view of a Victorian home known as Moody Mansion, one of the best things to do in Galveston

It may not seem like it as you’re sipping on your island beverage in your favorite Jimmy Buffett gear, but Galveston has some impressive mansions for you to check out if you’re into historic homes.

I am into all things old, so we had to make a few stops to check out Galveston’s mansion scene, one of the best hidden things to do in Galveston.

Let’s start with the Moody Mansion .

You may see this historic residence labeled as the Willis-Moody Mansion on some map apps. They’re same/same. For a tour inside this four-story home, book tickets ahead of time online. You’ll learn all about the Moodys during your visit, and why they’re considered one of the most powerful Texas families.

9. Visit the 1892 Bishop’s Palace, too.

A historic mansion, one of the top things to do in Galveston

This 1892 building is also known as the Gresham House or Gresham’s Castle. It’s imposing and, dare I say, a little bit scary. Book tours through the Galveston Historical Foundation.

Fun fact: If you love historic buildings, add the Grand 1894 Opera House to your list. The performing arts theater is on the National Register of Historic Places, but it’s also a survivor. This place stands after being hit by several hurricanes over its time in Galveston. It’s the city’s best historic spot for Galveston entertainment.

Don’t miss Sacred Heart Church across the street.  The architecture there is almost as impressive.

10. Get some sun on Galveston beaches.

A man and his dog walk a Galveston beach, one of the best things to do in Galveston.

Stewart Beach is the most popular Galveston beach, but it was closed during our visit. It looked like it was in need of some necessary maintenance. Maybe the spring breakers hit it too hard.

Yes, Galveston is big around spring break and annual events like Mardi Gras.

We went to nearby East Beach instead. Parking was easy, although you do need to walk out a bit across a wooden walkway to get to the water. It wasn’t busy at all.

Fort Crockett Park is a great option if you’re not sure where to start. Galveston Beach near the Galveston Island Convention Center is another accessible option.

11. Drive along the Galveston Seawall.

An aerial view of the Galveston Seawall, one of the top things to do in Galveston

Another option for getting in some beach time is driving along the Galveston Seawall and choosing a spot to stop along the way. It’s lined with beaches all along one side, with loads of eateries and shops on the other.

I highly recommend at least the drive if you’re short on time, as it’s a scenic one.

12. Sip on tasters at Galveston Island Brewing.

Beers at Galveston Island Brewing, one of the best things to do in Galveston

They were serving up a beer called the Tiki Colada during our visit to Galveston Island Brewing and I highly recommend a sip or 12 if you’re as lucky as I was. It’s a fruited wheat and it is delicious.

The outside patio is pet-friendly, with covered and uncovered options for those seeking or hiding from the sun. A playground outside is perfect for parents who want to send the littles off to play while they indulge in their brews nearby.

If you visit and don’t see parking in the small main area, there is a dirt area nearby that is also reserved for brewery parking. Don’t fret!

13. Grab dinner at the best Galveston restaurants.

I shared some lunch spots with you already, but if you’re looking for more options for dinner, here are a few that were on our list:

  • The Black Pearl Oyster Bar: Order the Gulf oysters if you don’t liken them boogers of the sea as I do. If you have a similar feeling about oysters, the menu includes all kinds of fresh seafood for you to order instead.
  • Gaido’s Seafood Restaurant : For something a little more upscale, head to Gaido’s for fresh Gulf fish and farm-raised meats. Reservations are recommended and available online.
  • Mama Teresa’s Flying Pizza : Pizza is never a bad call, especially if you’ve been out in the sun all day. They have a variety of pasta on the menu if you’re not feeling pie, you monster.
  • O’Malley’s Stage Door: Embrace the theatrics near the Grand 1894 Opera House with this one. Locals in the know come here for brews and pub sandwiches.
  • Shrimp ‘N Stuff : This place has been serving up shrimp ‘n stuff since the 1970s. Expect all of the fried goodies on top of boiled shrimp specials and rotating seafood platters.

14. Leave room for something sweet.

Chocolate bars at La King's Confectionery, one of the best things to do in Galveston

If you have room for dessert or something sweet at any point in the day, don’t miss out on La King’s Confectionery .

It’s an old-school candy shop with homemade chocolate, small-batch ice cream, and whatever else your sweet tooth is craving at the moment.

15. Walk the shore at Galveston Island State Park.

A crab on the beach at Galveston Island State Park, one of the best things to do in Galveston

The beachside was closed for renovations during our visit, so we skipped out on this one. When it’s open, it’s a popular spot for nature-seekers who want access to trails, birding, and watersports away from the crowds.

Start with the easy one-mile Alligator Loop if you want to see gators or the 3.3-mile Prairie Trail for a longer leg-stretcher. That one takes you through some of the main habitats on the island.

16. Book a guided tour.

Guided tours in Galveston are a great way to sit back, relax, and let someone else do the driving. I mean both literal driving and planning in this case.

Here are a few highly-rated options:

What to Do in Galveston: FAQs

What is the best month to go to galveston.

The best months to go to Galveston are the spring and fall months. Summer may sound like a good idea because you have so many beaches to choose from to cool things off, but it gets truly sweltering in this part of the state come June.

We arrived after the majority of spring breakers were already gone, but did catch a younger vibe in the main part of town. Expect a more raucous atmosphere if you time your visit around popular college spring breaks.

Is it OK to swim in Galveston?

It is generally OK to swim in Galveston, but you should keep yourself updated on water quality issues at city beaches, especially after big storms. Water temperatures are usually warm enough for swimming by March.

What are things to do in Galveston at night?

Things to do in Galveston at night include walking ghost tours to explore the city’s haunted history, eating seafood at the city’s best restaurants, and live performances at any of the city’s live performance venues.

Can you walk around and drink in Galveston?

You can walk around and drink in Galveston if you’re doing so in designated areas. It’s OK around The Strand, East Beach, and Seawolf Park, but prohibited at Stewart Beach. Drinking out of glass containers is prohibited on any beach.

Galveston, TX is worth visiting on your tour of Texas or a visit to the Gulf Coast in the United States. It’s a much different vibe than neighboring Houston, and there’s plenty to do even if you’re not there for the beach.

Just be aware that it’s popular with young people in the summer and over spring break. If that’s not your vibe, plan your trip in the off-season.

Your Flight: I use a variety of tools to find cheap airfare, but if you’re looking to book during a particular period of time, you should use Skyscanner . It’s a great tool for when you’re more flexible, too, as it allows visitors to compare travel based on length of travel, departure date, etc.

19 Best Attractions & Things to Do in Galveston

Written by Lana Law and Anietra Hamper Updated Dec 27, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Authors Lana Law and Anietra Hamper have spent time visiting Galveston on many occasions, experiencing the attractions, and outdoor activities.

The beautiful beaches and historic downtown of Galveston, less than an hour from Houston , make this a year-round destination for Texans and tourists.

Historic homes in Galveston, Texas

For much of the 19th century, Galveston was the largest and wealthiest town in the state, and for a brief period, it was even the capital of the Republic of Texas. The splendor of the period can still be seen in the historic buildings and handsome mansions.

In the heart of downtown, the Strand Historic District preserves many original façades, now home to restaurants, cafés, galleries, and shops. Among the many repurposed buildings are original old Galveston charms like the Star Drugstore, the oldest drugstore in Texas, and the first desegregated lunch counter in Galveston, where locals still gather for breakfast or lunch.

While many people, particularly in summer, come primarily to lounge on the beaches, Galveston also offers a wealth of other things to do, from sightseeing on the Galveston Trolley, bird-watching, fishing, and water sports to exploring museums and enjoying wonderful dining.

For more ideas on places to visit and how to spend your time, see our list of top attractions and things to do in Galveston.

Beach & Pleasure Pier, Galveston

Highlights: The Seawall, pedestrian promenade, and the entertaining Pleasure Pier

Turquoise water laps at the seemingly endless stretch of soft sand that fronts the ocean and draws crowds of people here for the stunning Galveston beaches from spring until fall. The Seawall runs for more than 10 miles along the beach, offering plenty of room to find your own patch of sand and space to play in the shallow and often calm water.

Several washroom facilities are located along here at various intervals, and behind the beach are restaurants, shops, and hotels. At the heart of the action along here is Pleasure Pier.

Sunset at a beach in Galveston

One of the most popular beaches, near the east end of the island, is Stewart Beach . It is also one of the beaches near Houston , often drawing urban visitors for the weekend. At this family-friendly beach, you'll find showers and restrooms, chair and umbrella rentals, a children's playground, concessions, and a lifeguard.

If you are looking for more nature and activity, head west to Galveston Island State Park , where you can go walking along the boardwalks, kayaking through the bayou, and bird-watching on either the bay or ocean side.

The Strand Historic District

Highlights: Walkable streets around the district with shops, restaurants, and entertainment all in one place

The Strand Historic District in Galveston — also known simply as the Strand — is a National Historic Landmark District consisting mainly of Victorian-era buildings, many of which survived the Great Storm of 1900. Now housing numerous restaurants, cafés, galleries, and antique stores, it's a pleasant place for a little sightseeing, shopping, and dining.

The district stretches all the way down to the busy wharf area, with its old restored warehouses, and is home to many of Galveston's most important tourist attractions. Also in this area, you'll find Pier 21 , with the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum , the nearby Texas Seaport Museum , and places to eat overlooking the water.

Be sure to stop in at the Pier 21 Theater to watch The Great Storm , a film on the 1900 Hurricane that hit Galveston and changed it forever.

The Strand is also home to an eclectic mix of retail and dining, from old-fashioned candy stores, like LA King's Confectionery , where you can watch taffy-making demonstrations, to more upscale restaurants, like the long-running Rudy and Paco , next door to The Grand 1894 Opera House, or the more modern Vargas Cut and Catch across the street.

Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier

Highlight: Non-stop family entertainment, rides, and activity on the pier; suitable for people of all ages

The most prominent feature along the Seawall is Pleasure Pier . Jutting out into the ocean like a carnival on stilts, the pier's roller coasters and colorful structures can be seen from well off in the distance along the beachfront.

Opened in 2012, this 1,130-foot-long pier — built on the site of its predecessor, which was destroyed by a hurricane in 1961 — boasts numerous fun rides suitable for all ages, as well as games and activities, and a restaurant.

If you are visiting Galveston with kids, this is a great family thing to do and a fun way to spend some time. The Pleasure Pier is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and on weekends during the winter.

Address: 2501 Seawall Blvd, Galveston, Texas

Leaping dolphin off Galveston

Highlight: Learning about the local ecology and wildlife in addition to spotting dolphins

Playful dolphins frequent the Gulf of Mexico waters around Galveston, which is why Galveston Dolphin Sightseeing Tours are popular for visitors to the island. The guided trip takes you on a one-hour narrated boat tour that departs from the harbor at Pier 21 to look for pods of dolphins.

The sightseeing trip is nice for visitors, since the guides also share information about the ecology and marine wildlife around Galveston Island. The covered boat makes for a comfortable trip out on waters that are prime for seeing dolphins. They generally jump alongside the boat.

The trip runs seasonally from March through October, when the water conditions are best for dolphins. Tour times range throughout the day, so you can select a morning, afternoon, or evening time to fit your schedule.

Address: Pier 21, Galveston, Texas

Galveston Naval Museum

Highlight: A hidden, worthwhile gem located away from the main tourist areas

The Galveston Naval Museum at Seawolf Park on Pelican Island is one of Galveston's most spectacular treasures. With the USS Cavalla WWII submarine and the USS Stewart WWII warship, the small museum and memorial park are a must-visit.

This is a great place to visit if you have a couple of hours to kill or are waiting for a cruise ship. There is a wealth of American history in one location and the opportunity to step foot on two preserved vessels that played an important part in WWII.

The USS Cavalla is a World War II submarine that sank IJN aircraft carrier Shokaku, which was involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Step onboard and descend into the tiny corridors to see how sailors lived and worked during wartime.

Having the rare experience of walking through the submarine galleys, bunk areas, and operational rooms gives new respect and perspective for the service members who called the USS Cavalla home for many months at a time.

The USS Stewart was originally used as a training ship for young officers. The ship escorted three serving U.S. presidents during its time in service.

Visitors can walk through the ship to see the large artillery up close and experience how the sailors lived on board. On Saturdays, docents are available on-site for additional information.

Address: 6341 Stewart Road#249, Galveston, Texas

Bishop's Palace

Highlight: Option to take a behind-the-scenes tour to areas of the home that are off-limits during regular tours

Built as a private residence, the Bishop's Palace , also referred to as Gresham's Castle, is often described as one of the most significant Victorian mansions in America. It was completed in 1893 after seven years of construction.

Highlights include its castle-like exterior, complete with turrets and towers and sculpted granite, limestone, and sandstone. The grand interior displays elaborate carved woodwork, high ceilings, stained glass windows, fireplaces, and fine furnishings.

Now a National Historic Landmark and museum, the home is open for tours. For a more in-depth visit that takes you literally from the attic to the basement, book in for a specialized tour that takes place only on Saturday mornings.

Address: 1402 Broadway Street, Galveston, Texas

Moody Gardens and Aquarium Pyramid

Highlight: You can make a full-day visit to Moody Gardens by adding in the Palm Beach waterpark.

Moody Gardens is a huge complex with things to do for the whole family. It can easily be an all-day outing, or you can target just one of the many attractions here and spend a few hours. The most dominant features are the three glass pyramids.

The main attraction for many people is a visit to the Aquarium Pyramid . This huge aquarium showcases the marine life of the Pacific, the Antarctic, the Great Barrier Reef, the Coral Sea, and the Caribbean. Some of the highlights are the underwater tunnel, touch tanks, and the giant river otters and the penguins, both of which are part of the animal encounter programs.

The Rainforest Pyramid is home to flora and fauna from the tropics, including free-roaming monkeys and sloths, birds, and fish. A boardwalk at canopy level takes you right through the heart of the rainforest. The aptly named Discovery Pyramid focuses on science and offers a range of displays.

Afterward, head to Palm Beach waterpark with its white sands, freshwater lagoons, slides, lazy river, and replica paddle steamer. Also, check out the elaborate seasonal displays.

Movie buffs will want to take note that Moody Gardens has the largest movie screens in Texas. These towering screens have the latest projection technology and are a great spot to see MG 3D and 4D Special FX features. Visit the Moody Garden's website to see what's showing when you are visiting.

Address: 1 Hope Blvd, Galveston, Texas

Absolute Equality Mural on the Freedom Walk

Highlight: The mural is in the heart of the Strand Historic District, so you can park and walk to enjoy other attractions in the area.

Many people may not know that Juneteenth, when the announcement that all slaves were declared free on June 19, 1865, happened in Galveston. To commemorate Galveston's place in African American history, there is a self-guided Freedom Walk that you can take through town to learn about the historical sites that are significant to Juneteenth.

The Freedom Walk starts at the Middle Passage Marker at the Texas Seaport Museum and takes you to the African American Museum, several local churches, and the Juneteenth historical marker at the Osterman Building. One of the most compelling stops is at the Absolute Equality Mural on Strand Street.

You can download the Freedom Walk route from the Visit Galveston app and take your time going from site to site.

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum

Highlight: Stepping onto the pipe deck for a rare glimpse into how the oil rigs operate in the region

The Port of Galveston is home to many rigs and supply vessels, and with a nod to Galveston's important role in the Gulf of Mexico's bustling oil and gas industries. A visit to the Ocean Star Offshore Oil Rig and Museum offers a fascinating insight into the energy business.

Based on an actual oil rig — the massive Ocean Star , built in 1969 — the museum showcases many excellent exhibits. Highlights include a visit to the pipe deck, where some of the larger equipment needed to drill the rig's more than 200 wells is stored, along with interactive displays showing the process from exploration to extraction.

Address: 2002 Wharf Road, Galveston, Texas

Texas Seaport Museum and the Elissa

Highlight: The limited tickets to participate in one of the daily sails of the tall ship Elissa.

The Texas Seaport Museum is home to the tall ship Elissa , built in 1877 and considered one of the finest restored historical vessels in the US. This lovely old ship still puts to sea regularly, and her fascinating story — including her rescue from the scrapyard — is told in the museum on shore.

Other highlights include a look at the history of the Port of Galveston, including the names of the more than 133,000 migrants who passed through. If you want to see more, drive over to nearby Seawolf Park for a peek at a WWII-era US Navy submarine and the USS Stewart , a destroyer from the same period.

Address: 2200 Harborside Drive, Galveston, Texas

Ship to Shore

Highlight: Several seaport attractions are located close together so you can combine visits on the same day.

One of the newest attractions in Galveston is the Ship to Shore experience at Galveston's Historic Seaport, which gives visitors a hands-on education in what it was like for immigrants heading to the island in the 1880s. Inside the interactive museum, you become one of the early immigrants to the island.

Assigned the profile of a real Galveston immigrant, you experience what it was like on the ship voyage to America and the challenges that new arrivals had as they were processed in the 1880s in one of the busiest ports. You will receive a digital card during the visit, which personalizes your experience each time you go through Ship to Shore.

There are several other historical attractions around the Historic Seaport, like The Elissa tall ship, which you can combine into the same visit. Stop for lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants in the district.

Address: 2200 Harborside, Galveston, Texas

The Bryan Museum

Highlight: Fascinating history about the Galveston Orphans Home on display; art galleries

Housed in a fabulous historic building, the Bryan Museum , which was once the Galveston Orphans Home, showcases a diverse collection of art and artifacts from the American West, spanning more than 12,000 years. The permanent collection deals with everything from Native American history to the Spanish Colonial Era, and Texas Independence.

The Texas Masters Gallery displays the art of Texas-born artists, as well as those who traveled through the area and captured it on canvas. Around the museum, you'll also find works by various artists, including pieces by Andy Warhol.

iPads on displays help explain the pieces and their significance, but the best way to appreciate the collection and learn about the history is to take a tour. If you are lucky, you may even see the founder, Mr. J.P. Bryan, who opened the Bryan Museum in 2015.

Address: 1315 21st Street, Galveston, Texas

Fishing in Galveston

Highlight: Galveston offers one of the easiest access points for various types of saltwater fishing from the piers to bays and offshore.

Fishing is a regular pastime for people in Galveston and vacationers. Galveston is one of the best places for deep sea fishing in Texas , but it is also prime for surf fishing, fly fishing in the wetland areas, and from local piers.

Experienced anglers can arrive with gear and a Texas fishing license and try their hand at redfish and sea trout. One of the best local spots to fish is Galveston's 61st Street Fishing Pier . Daily fishing rates apply, and you can rent rods right at the pier office. Bait is also available at the pier.

The 61st Street Fishing Pier is fun whether you are fishing or not. It is also a perfect spot to learn from the locals about what to catch and how to catch in-season species. It is a family-friendly spot, too, if you are looking for something local to do with children.

Guides and fishing charters are available on the island for a wide range of fishing excursions, from bay fishing to open water.

Address: 6101 Seawall Blvd., Galveston, Texas

Moody Mansion

Highlight: The children's museum at Moody Mansion has hands-on creative activities just for kids.

Built in 1895, this 28,000-square-foot home is one of the finest of its kind in the state of Texas and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places . The interior of the Victorian Moody Mansion features stained glass, custom-carved woodwork, decorative tiles, and plasterwork, along with fine stencil work throughout.

The home also impresses with its red brick, unique architecture, and numerous arches, along with its many fine antiques, photos, and artwork. Guided tours through its 20 rooms are available, and many special events and programs are also hosted here.

The meticulously maintained grounds with tropical plants are worth strolling around, and be sure to see the vintage Cadillacs parked in the garage. There is also a children's museum located on the ground floor of the home.

The Grand 1894 Opera House

Highlight : The many ways to enjoy this restored opera house from orchestra seating to luxurious box seats.

Another of Galveston's fine old structures is the Grand 1894 Opera House , a splendidly restored Victorian theater that has withstood multiple hurricanes. It still hosts a full lineup of musical and theatrical performances, along with a selection of fun shows for kids of all ages.

The Grand 1894 Opera House has been the official opera house for the state of Texas since 1993. The main performance auditorium has three levels of seating along with smaller side balconies closer to the stage.

If you are unable to go inside, the windows along Postoffice Street feature interesting displays on a regular basis. On the wall inside the main entrance, a plaque shows the level of the high water mark from Hurricane Ike, which swept through in 2008.

Address: 2020 Post Office Street, Galveston, Texas

Galveston Island State Park

For bird-watching, kayaking, SUPing, fishing, or simply enjoying a natural beach environment, head to Galveston Island State Park , near the west end of the island. Galveston is situated along the Central Flyway, making it a popular spot for birding, with opportunities to see migrating and resident birds.

American oystercatcher

The most popular area is the lovely beach on the ocean side. On the bay side are a number of trails and observation platforms. The park also does a good job of presenting family activities on a regular basis, so be sure to check the calendar to learn about things to do when you are visiting.

A highlight is the famous streamlined Texas Limited passenger train and the impressive Santa Fe diesel, along with a large HO model train layout.

The museum isn't all about train equipment. A visit to the People's Gallery takes you back to 1932 and an era when people wore fancy hats and dresses and suits and caps to catch a train. The waiting area has been exquisitely recreated down to the finest detail, complete with statues and even a newsstand.

If you can, try to plan your visit to coincide with one of the regular train shows for a chance to take a ride on these historic machines.

Address: 2602 Santa Fe Place, Galveston, Texas

Galveston Tree Sculpture Tour

Highlight : Looking for sculptures is a great way to explore some of Galveston's residential areas.

Hurricane Ike launched a devastating blow to Galveston Island in 2008, but the city has turned some of that destruction into works of art. The Galveston Tree Sculpture Tour is a self-guided tour along some of Galveston's streets, where destroyed oak trees have been carved into artistic sculptures.

One of the largest concentrations of sculptures is in the East End Historic District. The self-guided tours to see them can be done by walking or biking the route and finding them elegantly located in yards and gardens.

Birds at sunset in Galveston

Highlight: Being able to experience some of the best birding opportunities along the Gulf Coast

Birding is a year-round activity in Galveston. The diverse ecological habitats that exist on the island make it a major birding destination. Early in the year, you will find large numbers of water birds congregating on the island and on the nearby Bolivar Flats. Species like sandpipers, herons, egrets, and wading birds like roseate spoonbills are in abundance.

Springtime is when the tropical birds begin to arrive on the island. Ruby-throated hummingbirds, waterthrush, and songbirds arrive, ready for their migratory rest. Birding in the summertime is great in the mainland forests, where you can hear the chorus of breeding birds. Midsummer is ideal for shorebirds. Head to the wildlife refuges for the best viewing opportunities.

Fall brings the migratory birds and early winter arrivals of species like phoebes. Later in the year, resident species like raptors and red-tailed hawks return. There are many places to visit for bird-watching, from the coast to Galveston Island State Park . You can find birding tours and workshops on the island if you are new to the sport.

The two most popular places to stay in Galveston are near the beach or in the historic downtown . You can find excellent hotels in both of these locations. Below are some highly-rated hotels we recommend.

Luxury Hotels:

  • For oceanfront luxury, the historic Grand Galvez is unbeatable. Built after the great hurricane of 1900, this property is a landmark and one of the best hotels in Galveston. With a pool and spectacular views over the ocean and beach, this is the perfect choice for visitors who are in Galveston to appreciate the beauty of the Gulf Coast and want to be able to walk to the beach.
  • The sister property to the Hotel Galvez, The Tremont House Hotel, Spa, and Convention Center is another posh and historic hotel, but set in a prime location in downtown Galveston. Built in 1839, the Tremont House is an elegant property with an intimate atmosphere, featuring exposed bricks, high ceilings, and individually designed rooms. It is within walking distance of many of the major attractions and fine restaurants.
  • Families looking for luxury will enjoy a stay at the Moody Gardens Hotel , conveniently located at the Moody Gardens complex, which features everything from a water park to glass pyramids housing a tropical rainforest and an aquarium.

Mid-Range Hotels:

  • The Holiday Inn Resort Galveston-On the Beach is, as the name suggests, conveniently located right across the street from the beach. A large outdoor pool, balconies, and kids' activities, make this a popular hotel.
  • Also worth considering in this category are the Quality Inn & Suites Beachfront , with a large indoor pool and within walking distance of the beach,
  • The Best Western Plus Galveston Suites , is perfect for those looking for a bit more space with ocean views and an outdoor pool and hot tub.

Budget Hotels:

  • You can save money by staying off the beach, which is not hugely inconvenient considering Galveston is a small city. The Galveston Inn & Suites Hotel is a newer hotel with an outdoor pool, located a short drive from downtown and the beach.
  • The Super 8 by Wyndham offers basic rooms, an outdoor pool, and is located within walking distance of the beach.

The best time to visit Galveston is May, June, July, August, and September, which is the height of the summer season. During these months you are almost guaranteed to have sunny days, and all the top attractions are open. These months have the warmest temperatures, ranging from the low 80s to the low 90s (Fahrenheit), and some of the best beach weather. The added benefit of these months is having prime beach days when the water temperatures are at their warmest and local festivals and entertainment are in full swing. Rainfall begins to pick up in late August and September.

If you are looking to travel with less intense Texas heat during your Galveston visit, your next best times to travel are October and November, when temperatures cool a bit but are still warm, in the low 70s to the low 80s. On the other side of the winter season, March and April are also comfortable months with temperatures in the high 60s to high 70s. You will probably find some deals on accommodations during these months coming into, and out of, the high summer season.

Many visit with a friend next year, is it worth a few days' stay?

' class=

Look over the lists of attractions to see if they suit you. Things like the offshore oil rig museum, Seawolf Park, the Tall Ship, Moody Gardens , The Strand , and much more. More than enough for a few days stay. Quite different from the MIdlands, and I think it's always nice to have a change for a vacation.

The beaches, while not chrystaline white, are sand, rather than stony, with warm water.

https://www.playpartyplan.com/things-to-do-in-galveston-tx/

As for the beach itself: the sand part is not very wide, and the sand is sort of grayish-tan, it’s not fluffy or soft. The water is murky and olive drab in color. If you stand in water up to your knees, you won’t see your feet. It’s hard to see the seaweed, fish, and shells coming (or if you’re unlucky, the jelly fish). However it is warm and the waves are a nice size for playing in the surf. I have swam comfortably in early November.
