Boise State Has Gut-Wrenching Reaction To Being Placed In The First Four Of The NCAA Tournament

While 28-6 Indiana State being completely left out of the NCAA Tournament was the shocker of Selection Sunday, perhaps the second-most egregious move involved Boise State being given a No. 10 seed to play in the First Four.

The Broncos put together a 22-10 campaign, but fell to New Mexico in their opening game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament. While that loss certainly didn't help Boise's cause, many believed it was still comfortably into the NCAA Tournament, but the committee clearly had a different point of view.

The Broncos were handed a 10 seed and will take on fellow 10 seed Colorado in a First Four matchup on Wednesday night. The other play-in game will be between 10 seeds Colorado State and Virginia.

Cameras were in the room to catch the reaction from Boise State as it learned its tournament fate, and to say the entire room had every ounce of oxygen taken out of it when that No. 10 flashed on the screen would be an understatement.

There were audible gasps, and not the good kind.

KenPom Rankings Tell The Story

When looking at the KenPom rankings, Boise being upset about receiving a 10-seed is (somewhat) warranted.

The Broncos finished the year ranked 39th in KenPom , with Colorado State finishing a spot ahead of them at 38th. The other two play-in teams, Virginia and Colorado, are two very different cases.

Somehow, someway Virginia snuck in as a 10 seed despite finishing 69th in KenPom.

Colorado has the case for being the most upset about being placed in the First Four as it finished the year ranked 26th in KenPom.

Each year the entire college basketball world - teams, media, and fans - scream and shout about improper seeding. This year is no different, but it's rare we get the ‘aw shucks’ reaction from a team that actually does make the field like we did with Boise State on Sunday.

Colorado extends Boise State's March Madness misery. Can Buffs go on NCAA Tournament run?

Editor's note: Follow all of the men's March Madness action, scores and highlights here with USA TODAY Sports' live coverage.

Here come the Buffaloes?

The first round of the NCAA Tournament is officially set after Colorado outlasted Boise State 60-53 in the First Four to set up a matchup with Florida.

From NFL plays to college sports scores, all the top sports news you need to know every day.

Colorado entered the game sixth in the country in 3-point shooting at 39.4%, but it was an off night behind the arc for the Buffaloes as they went 4-for-15 (26.7%). Still, Colorado was able to make shots inside the arc, and clutch shooting helped it pull away from Boise State.

One of the hottest teams the last few weeks, Colorado needed every late-season win to make the tournament. Wednesday's win was Colorado's ninth in its last 10 games. Can the Buffaloes keep it rolling and make a run deep into March Madness?

Colorado takes down Boise State in First Four

It was an ugly first-half performance for both sides, with Colorado shooting 38.5% and Boise State 29%. Combined, the Buffaloes and Broncos were 2-for-18 from the 3-point line and neither side could generate any momentum.

The slow pace continued in the second half in what turned into a slugfest. But the Buffaloes were able to execute late. After Boise State went up by four with four-and-a-half minutes left, Colorado went on an 11-0 run the next four minutes, with Eddie Lampkin Jr. turning an air-ball into a bucket with 33 seconds left that essentially sealed the game. During that stretch, Boise State missed six straight shots.

Head coach Tad Boyle credited his team's defense on getting the win, despite Boise State getting a whopping 19 offensive rebounds.

"We really started playing tougher on the glass. Boise State's a physical team, they keep coming at you, and we made just enough plays down the stretch. I thought our defense was great all night, our guys were locked in," Boyle said.

Boise State is now 0-10 in March Madness play.

Who will Colorado face next in March Madness?

Up next for the Buffaloes are the Florida Gators, the No. 7 seed in the South region . The two sides will play at roughly 4:30 p.m. ET Friday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The winner of the matchup will face the winner of Marquette-Western Kentucky in the second round on Sunday.

When did Colorado last make NCAA Tournament?

This is Colorado's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2021 and 16th overall. The Buffaloes had success in the early days of the NCAA Tournament, making the Final Four in 1942 and 1955. However, since the tournament expanded in 1985, Colorado has never advanced past the second round.

First Four success in NCAA Tournament

Colorado will hope it can be the latest team to go on a tournament run after playing in the First Four. Since its inception in 2011, only once (in 2019) did a winning First Four team fail to win a first round game. Here are the teams that had tournament success after a First Four win, and how far they made it:

  • 2011: Virginia Commonwealth - Final Four
  • 2012: South Florida - second round
  • 2013: La Salle - Sweet 16
  • 2014: Tennessee - Sweet 16
  • 2015: Dayton - second round
  • 2016: Wichita State - second round
  • 2017: Southern California - second round
  • 2018: Syracuse - Sweet 16
  • 2021: UCLA - Final Four
  • 2022: Notre Dame - second round
  • 2023: Pittsburgh - second round; Fairleigh Dickinson - second round

Colorado vs. Boise State odds, score prediction, spread, line, time: 2024 First Four picks from proven model

The sportsline projection model has simulated boise state broncos vs. colorado buffalo 10,000 times as they meet in the first four 2024 on wednesday.

jaredbutlerbaylor-1.jpg

Teams that are looking for respect on a national level meet Wednesday to close out the 2024 First Four as the Colorado Buffaloes take on the Boise State Broncos . The winner will take the No. 10 seed in the South Region and move on to face No. 7-seeded Florida on Friday. Both the Buffaloes and Broncos expressed surprise and disappointment at their inclusion in the First Four, an indication they were among the last clubs included in the 68-team NCAA Tournament field. But both have also vowed to make the most of the opportunity.

Tipoff is set for 9:10 p.m. ET from UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio. The Buffaloes are 3-point favorites and the over/under for total points scored is 143.5 in the latest Colorado vs. Boise State odds via SportsLine consensus. Before making any Boise State vs. Colorado picks, be sure to see the college basketball predictions and betting advice from SportsLine's proven model .Ā

The model simulates every Division I college basketball game 10,000 times. It enters the 2024 NCAA tournament on a 148-106 roll on all top-rated college basketball picks dating back to last season, returning more than $1,700 for $100 players. It also has a strong 29-19 (+810) record on top-rated spread picks this season. Anyone following has seen huge returns.

Now, the model has set its sights on Colorado vs. Boise State in the First Four 2024. You can head to SportsLine to see its picks . Here are several college basketball odds Ā and trends for Boise State vs. Colorado:

  • Colorado vs. Boise State spread: Colorado -3
  • Colorado vs. Boise State over/under: 143.5
  • Colorado vs. Boise State money line: Colorado -165, Boise State +138
  • CU: The Buffaloes have won 20 of 25 games this season in which they were favored.
  • BSU: The Broncos are 15-8 against the spread in their past 23 games.
  • Colorado vs. Boise State picks: See picks at SportsLine

Why Colorado can coverĀ

The mindset of teams regarding their seeding line and NCAA Tournament game venue can play a big part in their motivation, and there's little doubt this edge belongs to Colorado. Buffaloes coach Tad Boyle said he knew his team was something of a longshot heading into the conference tournament, and he wasn't even sure that an appearance in the title game would be enough to be included in the field.

Boyle told the media he had a feeling that if the Buffaloes were included, there was a decent chance they would have to play in the First Four. He not only doesn't mind but said getting the nod among the last teams considered helps make up for numerous years he felt Colorado deserved a spot but was left at home.

"I knew this would be a possibility of playing on a Wednesday, and we are, but we're excited. It's like a new life. It's like being reborn," Boyle said.

Conversely, video of Boise State's reaction to being pegged for the First Four showed the Broncos recoiling in disbelief and disappointment as they apparently believed they were a lock to be included in the main 64-team field.Ā  See which team to pick at SportsLine .

Why Boise State can cover

When the seeds were announced on Selection Sunday, Boise State coach Leon Rice at first led the chorus of grumblings for a team that apparently felt it deserved to be included in the main 64-team field instead of the First Four. However, Mountain West Conference foe Colorado State , a club with a nearly identical resume, also was sent to Dayton and had to earn its way into the main bracket with a win over Virginia on Tuesday night.

However, once the initial disappointment subsided, Rice decided to take a different approach for getting the Broncos motivated for their game against Colorado. He first said the Broncos would use the perceived snub as motivation to prove the committee wrong on their seemingly low opinion of the Mountain West, which had just one team get out of the first round last season.

Rice amended his stance to mirror that of Colorado State coach Niko Medved, who took the approach that playing and winning a First Four game would turn into a major advantage by the time the official First Round matchup materialized.

"The seed doesn't matter, location doesn't matter, brackets don't matter ... because you've got to find a way to win," Rice told the media.Ā  See which team to pick at SportsLine .

How to make Boise State vs. Colorado picks

The model is leaning Over on the total, projecting the teams to combine for 145 points. It also says one side of the spread hits 60% of the time. You can only see the pick at SportsLine .

So who wins Colorado vs. Boise State, and which side of the spread hits 60% of the time?Ā  Visit SportsLine right now to see which side of the spread you need to jump on, all from the computer model that is 29-19 on top-rated college basketball spread picks this season.
