Cunard Line has a long history stretching back to the era of great ocean liners at a time when the only way to cross the Atlantic was by ship. Now days with all the Trans-Atlantic traffic gone to the airlines, Cunard Line has to adapt to the new economic realities in order to survive. Changing owners a few times, Cunard was finally acquired by Carnival Corporation and merged with Seabourn Cruises (three of the Cunard's ships were transferred to Seabourn). Like any other cruise line Carnival Corporation has purchased (Holland America Line, Seabourn Cruises, Costa Cruises, Princess Cruises etc.), Cunard Line was left to operate as a separate brand (one of the eleven Carnival Corporation brands), preserving the image Cunard has built for more than 175 years of operation.

The line was founded in 1840 by Samuel Cunard, a businessman from Halifax, Nova Scotia. Cunard applied for and received a contract from the British government to carry the Royal Mail from Britain to North America on a fleet of steam ships that would maintain a weekly service. The first route was from Liverpool to Boston via Halifax, but the western terminus was soon moved to New York. In the late 1920's Cunard Line lay down plans for a pair of ships that would be capable of maintaining the weekly service between Southampton and New York. Construction was delayed by the Great Depression, but the British government issued loan guarantees on the condition that Cunard Line merge with its rival, White Star Line. Cunard-White Star Line launched the ships Queen Mary in 1935 and Queen Elizabeth in 1939. Queen Mary won the speed record for the North Atlantic from the French ship Normandie and kept it for the next 16 years.

In 1960, the British government agreed to lend Cunard Line money for the construction of a new liner on the condition that the ship could be requisitioned for national service in an emergency. In 1967, Cunard Line launched Queen Elizabeth 2, named for the earlier ship, Queen Elizabeth. QE2, as she became known, made her maiden voyage in 1969, as a two-class ship for crossings and a one-class ship for cruises.

In 1998, Cunard Line was acquired by Carnival Corporation & plc for US$500 million, which merged the management of Cunard with Seabourn Cruises, their other luxury brand. In January 2004, Queen Mary 2- the largest, longest, highest, and most expensive cruise ship ever at the time was christened by Queen Elizabeth II and made her maiden voyage attended by worldwide media coverage. In May, Queen Mary 2 took over the North Atlantic liner service between Southampton and New York and became the flagship of Cunard Line. In that month QE2 was repositioned to make cruises out of Southampton for the British market. Also in 2004 Cunard Line, as one of the Carnival family fleet of cruise lines, was moved under the Princess/P&O Cruises umbrella, where its operations are now overseen by an almost entirely new staff (both onboard and on shore). In 2007 Cunard acquired another large size cruise ship - Queen Victoria. QV was originali ordered by Carnival Corporation as a Vista class cruise ship for another of the Carnival owned brands - Holland America Line. A second Vista class cruise ship - Queen Elizabeth joined the Cunard fleet in 2010. The legendary QE2 (Queen Elizabeth 2) was sold in 2008 and is turned into a floating hotel in Dubai, UAE.

An activities coordinator is similar to an event planner. In this role, you oversee things like recreation on board and coordinating shore excursion activities. The BLS does not offer wage information for this position.

It’s no secret that people on cruises like to drink. Many cruise lines offer a food and alcohol package as part of the booking process.

The amount of money you can make working as a bartender on a cruise ship varies greatly, depending on whether guests are expected to tip. But the average salary for bartenders is $29,380 annually.

Casino dealer

Working as a dealer at a cruise casino can be an exciting gig. These workers may oversee poker, blackjack, roulette, and more games.

Gambling service workers make $31,290 a year. However, as with tending bar, the actual wages for casino workers on a cruise can vary.

Many cruise ships have cafeterias and restaurants for when guests are in the mood for fine dining.

Cruise ship chefs may be involved in cooking and planning menus for guests and staff. Chefs or head cooks make $56,520 on average annually.

Deckhands help maintain the cruise ship. They may be involved in keeping these massive ships running, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, loading cargo, and getting passengers safely on board.

The experience required to work as a deckhand can vary greatly depending on the job description. The BLS does not offer salary information for this position.

Entertainer

Cruise lines hire all sorts of entertainers, from dancers to cover bands and magicians.

Working on a cruise ship can be a great way to hone and improve your craft or even take it in a different direction. The average wage for entertainers and performers is $29.67 an hour, which equates to about $61,713 annually.

Cruise ships also need people to manage their entertainers, particularly if the ship has a lot of shows and performances scheduled.

Entertainment directors may be involved in scheduling staff, planning performances, and doing administrative work. The average salary for entertainment/recreation managers is $67,220 annually.

Fitness instructor

Many cruise ships also offer various fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spin, and more.

For qualified instructors, this can be a great way to stay healthy, make money, and travel the world all at the same time. The average fitness instructor makes $45,380 annually.

Hair/makeup artist

On cruise ships, hair and makeup artists may work in spas, providing services to guests looking to get pampered while on board, and may be needed to work with the ship’s performers.

The BLS groups barbers, hairstyles, and cosmetologists together and states an average of $33,400 annual salary for these workers.

Since a cruise ship is essentially a floating hotel, many employees with experience working in hospitality are needed.

Hotel directors ensure that guests are comfortable and enjoy their experience. They may also be involved in planning and coordinating cruise activities.

The average salary for lodging managers is $61,910 annually.

Some cruise ships also hire nurses to provide care to passengers and cruise staff.

The amount of money nurses make on average usually depends on the type of nurse. Registered nurses (RNs) make $81,220 annually. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) make $54,620 a year.

Massage therapist

Many cruise passengers opt to take advantage of spa services. Massage therapists may work in a spa or travel to guests’ rooms with their equipment to provide massages.

Licensed massage therapists make just under $49,860 annually on average.

Cruise ships also frequently employ security staff to ensure the safety of guests and crew members. These workers may patrol the ship regularly and respond to any issues that come up.

The average salary for security guards is $33,030 annually.

Eating often and well is a big draw for many cruise passengers. Ships often have several restaurants on board and employ experienced servers to staff them.

Pay for these workers can vary, depending on the cruise line’s tipping policy. The average salary for a server in the U.S. is $29,120 annually.

Sales associate

Part of the beauty of the typical cruise ship is that it’s kind of like a floating mall, filled with gift shops and retail stores galore. Ships often need many sales associates to staff these stores.

Again, depending on the cruise line and the job, the pay for these gigs may vary. However, BLS data puts the average salary for a retail sales worker at $30,750 annually.

That’s not huge money, but perhaps it's enough for students to get ahead financially during breaks between school years.

Bottom line

Working as a cruise crew member is certainly not for everyone — lodging for staff can be cramped, days can be long, and you might be away from home for weeks at a time.

But for those looking to tap into a new source of income as they travel, it just may be a win-win situation.

Chasing the path of the L.A. River southward and out of the twisted mess of traffic that is Central L.A., the 710 freeway abruptly funnels cars into a snaking path of multiple options: Piers A-E. Terminal Island. Cruise Terminal/Queen Mary.

Unless they’re working on a container ship, visitors tend to take the last option and head toward the instantly recognizable and one-of-a-kind Long Beach Cruise Terminal.

What awaits is a wholly original world of multifaceted tourist options, retro-opulence and truly one-of-a-kind experiences nestled in between cosmopolitan downtown Long Beach and the imposing, mecha-kaiju -esque gantry cranes of the nation’s largest shipping complex. And, for those staying longer or willing to get out and about, the city itself offers beach town fun along its sandy shore.

A “CARNIVAL” AT SEA The Long Beach Cruise Terminal is owned and operated by Carnival Cruises, so if you’re heading out from there, you’re likely sailing on one of their ships and generally sailing south towards Baja California or Mexico’s mainland West Coast. These cruises are affordable, fun and great for groups (although solo cruising is taking a bite out of that demographic).

As part of the world’s largest cruise company (their holdings include Princess Cruises, Holland America, Seabourn Cruise Line and even the venerable UK Cunard Line) Carnival knows cruising and offers amazing experiences at a wide range of price points.

Their standard, three-day Ensenada cruise is a SoCal favorite to get away and can cost less than $300 – an amazing price for an experience that tends to offer inclusive bundles including onboard food and entertainment. For seasoned travelers or people looking for a true globetrotting experience, the Carnival Journeys 18-night Transpacific Cruise – an ocean-crossing, once-in-a-lifer sailing to Alaska and then on to Japan – is ideal. It departs Long Beach on August 22, 2024.

ALL HAIL THE QUEEN Since you’re in a cruising state of mind already, it just makes sense to stop and pay tribute at the HMS Queen Mary . The massive, beautiful, nearly-100-year-old ship that crossed the Atlantic over 10,000 times, played an outsized role in World War II as a troopship and held multiple records for speed, luxury, passenger manifests and more throughout her lifespan is now preserved, continually and lovingly restored and permanently moored adjacent to the cruise dock.

While the history of the Queen Mary is laden with ghost stories (and some equally terrifying tales of mismanagement, closings and re-openings) the ship in its post-COVID-19 iteration is focused on guest experiences and preservation. It shows. From spacious guest rooms to the beautifully appointed Observation Bar and its panoramic sunset view to the informative tours of more unique parts of the ship (the engine room, enormous in scale yet claustrophobic on its worker’s catwalks, is awash with as much awe as it is ancient mustiness), the Queen Mary is a must-visit at least once for SoCal residents, and it’s even better to stay the night and wander the liminal-like repeating stateroom corridors and the absurdly long lengths of the boardwalk promenade deck (remember, this ship is larger than the famed and fated Titanic) and consider what it was like to experience a real transatlantic passage on the ship in the dark, steaming along on a cold night.

THE LONG BEACH EXPERIENCE For some of our readership, Long Beach or the South Bay is home, and for others, like many places in Greater SoCal, it’s a bit of a destination. The city of 456,000, while glommed into the L.A. County metro, does have a vibe all its own, and if you’re simply driving there to catch a boat, you might miss out on an interesting blend of history and a dynamic SoCal neighborhood.

The Port of Long Beach and its environs are highly industrial, so much so that you’ll almost never not see hulking container ships lying silently off the coast, waiting to unload their payload. But these, along with the man-made breakwaters and oil islands, all provide visual candy while strolling the calm, south-facing beach that lines the city.

Nearby to the cruise port – and walkable if you’re catching a ferry over on the Catalina Express is the Aquarium of the Pacific , the largest in Southern California, and Shoreline Village, a quaint – if not boisterous – collection of harborfront restaurants and bars where tourists and locals can mingle.

If you have a bit more time prior to shipping out, the trendy neighborhood of Belmont Shore is just east of downtown Long Beach and minutes from the cruise terminal by a rideshare (or you can stop in on your way into town). It’s a great place to park, walk along the shore on a marine-layer morning and take in opulent houses, excellent coffee shops and a beachy feel just minutes from the skyscrapers of downtown.

No matter where you choose to hit up in Long Beach and no matter if you do so before or after your cruise, you’ll bookend your sail with some beach time and maybe a new favorite spot to run out to on a quick intra-SoCal getaway.

We took a 40 minute cruise to tour around the Naval Academy and the surrounding areas and it was wonderful. They have an onboard bar for all sorts of drinks. They Also have a snack bar too.

This was a Fireworks cruise (on July 4th), and just like last year...it was amazing! Actually it was BETTER than last year, because there was more room on the boat to see the fireworks from the open air. Last year there were just a few seats in the front that were open air, and it was a mad dash to claim the few prized seats. Much different this year ....everyone calmly came aboard . The staff was SO nice, and the snacks provided were perfect. A variety of lunch meat "sliders",chips, pretzels and big soft cookies! Of course the bar was wine and beer, and water. Prices for things are average, considering its a cruise. My wife and I had been out and about earlier in the day, so I had brought plenty of water and Gatorade. Any of the cruises are excellent, and it is a different perspective on Bmore from the water. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Horrible horrible experience with this company. My daughter paid $180 for the cruise to st michaels for the wine fest. Ended up on a fricken school bus. Per the bus company watermark knew on Friday evening that they would not be taking boats in the morning and the afternoon ride back was iffy. No phone call no text no email. Not given anything promised. Not a watermark employee to be found anywhere when it was time to leave. They were hiding rather than assisting the hundreds of people that they screwed over Terrible experience. Should have told us there was an issue and given the opportunity to cancel.

Number 100 arrives with a bang. Something different I propose! Let's wander on a cruise of the Severn River that runs into Annapolis Maryland. First off, you get to wander by the US Naval Academy. Secondly the have a full bar, with craft beer so I was happy! The tour lasts 90 minutes. You leave Annapolis and head upriver. There are many veyr cool historical places to see along the way. The coolest thing for me was to see the US Naval Academy from the water side. We've seen it from the land side many times. I want to go visit the burial place of John Paul Jones. Overall the cruise was amazing. We actually got to sit at a table with another couple (theyw ere celebrating their anniversary). We had a wonderful conversation. It wasn't a hot, hot day in fact on the water it was pretty cool and comfortable. Great cruise, great way to see the city of Annapolis Maryland! Oh yeah, and crack 100 reviews!

Took a Queen Harbor 40 min cruise. These cruises leave every hour, on the hour basically. There was a bathroom and bar on here. Plenty of seats. Automated tour, with a tour guide to make additional comments if necessary. Walked up 5 minutes before the cruise took off and got on. $18 for adults. On a hot Sunday summer, the breeze was perfect on this boat. Talks a lot about the history of the naval academy and other buildings and bridges along the shoreline. This was nice!

My wife and I really enjoyed the three hour inner harbor tour in Baltimore! Truly a great time. The only thing that was bad is really out of the control of Watermark. The Inner Harbor of Baltimore is really littered. Also, there was some gang members harassing people on the dock and police had to be called. I would recommend going to the Annapolis cruises over Baltimore. With that being said, our bartender Colleen was great! Super fast and friendly. She made great drinks and was making jokes. Definitely wished she was at my local bar. The band playing, Tranzfusion, was incredible! Classic rock was spot on. They started playing as soon as we left the dock and didn't stop until we got back (three hours). Can't beat that for $38 a ticket. Overall, I would recommend this harbor cruise to anyone.

I was out in Annapolis wondering around for the day and walked up to the 40 minute cruise 10 minutes before it left dock so my friends and I decided to jump on board and see what the experience would be. The ladies that were selling tickets were extremely nice and accommodating, they even offered us sunscreen since we were talking about being burned in the sun.. Once we boarded we went to the top level and got great seats to see all of the sights of Annapolis.. There wasn't many people on board so it was nice for our small group to really spread out and enjoy ourselves. I enjoyed the narration and all of the fun facts I would have never known about Annapolis! It's something I would do when I have visitors in town that want to do something with a little history..

We had a great time on the cruise when our friends came to visit and family visit on a different occation. Both times we had fun and the tide was much gentle on the 2nd time around due to less winds on the bay. The staffs are really warm and welcoming. The audio description of the landmarks nearby is informative and clear. Highly recommed if you are in Annapolis.

Captain dean gave us a great tour of the Severn, and really made an effort to make everyone feel like they got a personal tour. He was more than happy to answer all of our questions, and treated us like old friends. We will definitely recommend this tour to anyone looking for a leisurely cruise down the Severn.

The Bay's Exclusive Non-fishing Crewed Charters

Island Time is a beautiful, spacious and well-equipped 45' climate-controlled Yacht. Its features include A/C, Generator, Sat TV, XM radio sound system, Hydraulic Swim Platform/boat lift, WiFi, 2 staterooms, 2 baths, flybridge seating, custom cockpit table, sunshades, chairs, RIB tender w/30hp outboard, 2 fridges/freezer, freshwater transom water, floats, cooler, towels, ++

All Charters are crewed with a fully COVID-19 vaccinated USCG 100-ton Licensed Master Captain and professionally trained Stew/First Mate.      

Charter Options    

Full-Day Destination Boat Charter - (10:00-4:00) Private and All-Inclusive (alcohol not included) crewed charter: $1400. See sample itineraries. Other destinations maybe subject to fuel surcharge. Max. 6 persons. 

Sunset Cruise - Private 2-hour Bay & Chester River Cruise: $500. Max. 6 persons. Departs Approx. 1 hour before sunset (weather permitting). 

Custom Charter (3-hour Min.) - (e.g. Bridal Showers, family get-togethers, etc.). Call Captain Paul and he'll work with you to plan a unique and memorable experience. 6 persons max.

All Charters depart Kent Narrows, (Grasonville) MD. Full-day Ports of Call include: St Michaels, Rock Hall, or Annapolis. Baltimore Inner Harbor, or other more distant ports of call may require a fuel surcharge. 

Sample Full-day Itineraries

   The St. Michaels/Miles River Experience - Begin your private charter by boarding in Kent Narrows, MD. After a tour of the Kent Narrows waterfront enjoy a lite breakfast, including local fresh local fruit and fresh baked breads. Head south and begin exploring the beauty of Prospect and Eastern Bay on your way to St. Michaels. After a tour of St. Michaels waterfront, drop anchor and dingy in or tie up to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and spend the next couple hours enjoying historic St. Michaels. Enjoy lunch or charcuterie tray on board then depart St. Michaels and explore the pristine Wye River before heading back to port.

The Rock Hall/Chester River Experience - Begin your private charter by boarding in Kent Narrows, MD. After a tour of the Kent Narrows waterfront, enjoy a lite breakfast, including local fresh local fruit and fresh baked breads. Head north and begin exploring the beauty of the Chester River and the Chesapeake Bay on your way to Rock Hall. After a tour of Rock Hall waterfront, drop anchor and dingy in or tie up and spend the next couple hours touring historic Rock Hall. Enjoy lunch or charcuterie tray on board then depart and cruise up the Chester River. Anchor in a quiet cove and enjoy the water and/or cool beverage before heading back to port. 

Meet your Crew

Island Time is owned and operated by Captain Paul 

Capt. Paul holds a USCG 100-ton Master Captains license.  He boats out of Grasonville and has over 30 years of practical boating experience on the Chesapeake Bay.  He has delivered boats up and down the East Coast and is also available for providing personal on-water instruction or East Coast deliveries. 

First Mate/Chef Trina

First Mate Trina is Capt. Paul's wife.   Trina has over 30 years' experience in the hospitality industry.  She is the scheduler and Chef in charge of planning, preparing and serving all food items and tending to the needs of our guests.    

Captain Kate

Capt. Kate is Capt. Paul's daughter and also holds a 100-ton Master Captains license.  She has served on yachts up to 110' up and down the east coast and Bahamas, including running bareboat and crewed boat charters in the BVI's.  She holds all of the professional credentials for chartering and currently leads the on-water training program at the Annapolis School of Seamanship.   One of her specialties is providing personal on-water boat handling instruction for women. 

Booking and Cancellation Policy

                                               2024 Season: May 1 - Sept 30

Bookings and Payments: 

• To make a reservation please contact us directly by phone; (703) 926-5668. 
• A deposit of $300 is required to confirm your booking.   Deposits can be made via Zelle, Cash or Check.
• The balance can be paid by Zelle, Cash or Check on day of charter.   

Refund and Rescheduling Policy:

• Things happen.  If you are unable to keep your reservation, please call ASAP. 
• Charters can be fully refunded or rescheduled to an alternative available date without cost up to 2-days prior to charter via phone call only.   
• However, no shows and no calls will mean the loss of your deposit.

Weather Policy: 

• Sunset Cruise:  If the weather forecast is simply a chance of showers, scattered thunderstorms, isolated thunderstorms or chance of thunderstorms, we will discuss an alternative safe and fun route with guests prior to our departure. Generally, we avoid these passing thunderstorms by consulting with weather radar or stay closer to port. 

Payments:   We currently accept payments via Zelle, Cash, or personal check.   We appreciate your patience as we are working to improve payment options.

Marc Herrenbruck

Born and raised in the Bay Area, Captain Marc has been sailing and motoring on SF Bay for 35 years. He holds a 100 Ton Captains License and is a longtime member of the St. Francis Yacht Club. He is thrilled to be able to show others this incredible place we call home.

Richard Foregger

USCG 500-Ton Master (3rd issue) skippering some of the finest yachts on San Francsico Bay and the West Coast. Captain Richard has more than 15 years experience as a professional captain. Originally from New York, he grew up in Colombia and Brazil and began his yachting career in Puget Sound.

What to Expect

What to wear.

The bay has many faces and we will do our best to make your journey the most comfortable, but we always recommend the below for your comfort and safety:

​Bring layers of clothing, as it’s better to take layers off versus not having layers to put on. Please note, we will ask you to take your shoes off upon boarding the boat, and we provide sanitized SUPER COMFY slippers. We also have cozy sanitized deck blankets, as well.

Our Disclaimer

ChinChin provides a safe and smooth ride on San Francisco Bay. Typically, guests do not experience seasickness, as ChinChin has very stable platforms. However, that being said, we are on the Bay, and recommend purchasing necessary medications that you may need prior to boarding if you are prone to seasickness. We do not have any medications on board.

If you are running late, please give us a call: (415)519-0738 . We can wait up to 30 minutes beyond your scheduled departure time. If you need to cancel LESS THAN 72 hours before departure your payment is nonrefundable. If you selected any same-day packages and cancel, a 20% cancellation fee will be retained, with the remainder being refunded.

What if there is bad weather?

The Captain reserves the right to cancel or delay the charter, due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. The Captain has ultimate authority and say on all activities on ChinChin that would imperil the safety of passengers, crew or boat.

​ Our Captains continuously monitor the weather as part of their professional responsibilities to the vessel and client. They are the only person who may cancel a charter due to weather. If there is extreme weather and our captain deems it unsafe to operate we will offer a refund and/or a reschedule. Extreme weather in the Bay Area is categorized as heavy rain and/or strong wind and/or waves.

We will contact you, the client, 72-24 hours before your event in such case, except for same day reservations.

Is gratuity included?

Bareboat charter fees fees do not include gratuity for the captain and crew. We encourage you to present gratuity directly to your Captain in cash if appropriate.  The customary gratuity is 8% and 12% of the vessel rental cost and is divided equally among all.

Where is the pick-up and drop-off location?

As you leave the Ferry Building, turn to you your right and walk to the next building which is Pier 1 ½. You will see La Mar Restaurant and a sign that says Water Taxi. Walk straight through and you will see the dock. Should you require assistance please call (415)519-0738 .

What is the Ferry Building?

San Francisco’s historic Ferry Building houses a vibrant artisan marketplace. It might feel a little different, but we are still committed to providing you with a unique experience on the Bay.

Mask wearing is required for all passengers . Hand washing and sanitizing protocols are in place. Where possible, remain physically distant from others (6 ft apart). Please adhere to these guidelines, for the healthy and safe of our guests and crew.

You can rest assure that we are adhering to San Francisco County, State and CDC guidelines, and are ready to welcome you.

Missing Sodwana Bay charter boat found, no trace of skipper

Efforts ongoing to locate missing sodwana bay fishing vessel skipper after boat found.

The search for missing Sodwana Bay skipper John Matambu is ongoing after the burnt out boat was located earlier this morning (Sunday).

Authorities involved in the search have published the following update:

– Matambu’s boat has been found near Dobela completely burnt out

– ⁠The charter was made by a shady character supposedly for his wife, daughter and himself, but he was the only one who arrived in the morning.

– ⁠The information on where he was staying in Sodwana hasn’t checked out, and he was noticed in and around Sodwana the past few days (not sure how long).

– ⁠The boat was chartered to go quite far up the coast towards Mozambique.

– ⁠Matambu was last heard from at 11:30am on the 16 March. Having reached the designated charter point, and since then there has been no further contact from him.

– ⁠A team of people have just arrived at the boat location, and are now searching the area.

– ⁠The boat was definitely beached and the medical kit has been found, used and not burnt.

– ⁠At this stage people are being asked not to visit the boat location, as they are trying to preserve potential evidence and footprints etc.

An abandoned, burned boat and 2 missing men: South African authorities investigate maritime mystery

CAPE TOWN, South Africa — South African authorities searching for a missing charter boat captain are concerned about possible foul play after they discovered his vessel burned and abandoned on a beach in neighboring Mozambique, but no sign of him or the unknown man who hired him.

The National Sea Rescue Institute raised the alarm over captain John Matambu and his passenger after they didn’t return to Sodwana Bay on South Africa’s northeastern coast on Saturday evening having gone out early that morning.

The charred wreck of Matambu’s speed boat, Magnum Too, was discovered by a search plane on Sunday in the Dobela area of Mozambique, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) up the coast.

“Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances,” the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Matambu’s cousin told local media that a petrol canister and a medical kit were found near the boat.

The NSRI said some of the circumstances “appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.”

The man who hired Matambu to take him out on the 21-foot (6.4-meter) boat apparently gave false contact details, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said. The booking was made for a man, his wife and a child, but only the man boarded the boat, Lambinon said.

“Hopes are that this has all been a misunderstanding, and foul play was not involved, but at this stage all possibilities are being examined,” Lambinon told national broadcaster SABC. “The fact that the boat has been found across the border is obviously the difficulty now.”

The NSRI received a report that the boat was spotted at 10 p.m. Saturday night heading north toward Mozambican waters, it said, the last sighting before its charred hull was discovered the following day.

The Police Sea Borderline Control agency and the Police Search and Rescue unit are also involved in the search. Authorities described Matambu as a well-known, experienced and respected boat captain in Sodwana Bay.

Skipper missing at sea: Urgent appeal for information

A charter boat captained by a well-known KZN North Coast skipper has gone missing at sea near the border with Mozambique.

Update on Sunday 17 March at 16:21 CAT:

During an extensive search involving multiple agencies and a fixed wing aircraft the charter fishing ski-boat MAGNUM TOO was located wrecked and extensively burnt out in the vicinity of Dobela on the Mozambique coastline this morning. Law Enforcement agencies response team are on site investigating. There remains no signs of the skipper John Matambu or an as yet unidentified man who reportedly chartered the fishing vessel. Both men remain missing in unknown circumstances. Thoughts are with the family and colleagues of John Matambu in this difficult time.

At around 17h00, Saturday, 16 March, NSRI Richards Bay were alerted to concerns of a charter vessel ski boat "MAGNUM TOO" a 21 foot Yeld Cat ski-boat, missing at sea in uncertain circumstances that appear to indicate that foul play may be involved.

NSRI are hopeful that this is not the case.

The ski-boat MAGNUM TOO may have departed Sodwana Bay during the early morning Saturday, 16 March.

NSRI Richards Bay duty crew and NSRI St Lucia duty crew were activated.

A search towards Sodwana Bay and North along the coastline were initiated including a private fixed wing aircraft and as yet there remains no signs of the ski-boat MAGNUM TOO with local competent skipper John Matambu onboard and a male passenger or passengers (uncertain) that we are hoping are well and safe.

A missing persons report has been opened at MBAZWANA Police station.

The SA Police Services Police Sea Borderline Control, Police Search and Rescue, TNPA (Transnet National Ports Authority), Ezemvelo KZN Wild Life, local community security companies, local public members, local resorts and lodges, along that entire stretch of coastline in that area, of Sodwana Bay and North of Sodwana Bay, are assisting to gather information, conduct investigations and conduct search efforts.

MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre) are assisting.

It appears that persons, or a person, a male, that have not been identified, may have chartered the ski-boat that was expected to return to Sodwana Bay during Saturday afternoon.

Real concerns are emerging that appear to suggest possible foul play and concerns are for the skippers John Matambu's safety and his passenger/s.

We reiterate we are hopeful that this is not the case.

Fears are - that the ski-boat MAGNUM, that may have been seen to be heading North, past Banga Neck, and may have been pinned in the vicinity of Inhaca (unconfirmed) - may be involved in nefarious circumstances that are rapidly increasing concerns.

At 22h00 a report was received suggesting the ski-boat may have been spotted as far North as Santa Maria across to the Mozambique coastline.

Telkom Maritime Radio Services are broadcasting a marine radio all ships alert for vessels along the Northern Coastline of KZN (Eat Coast - Indian Ocean), and beyond the South African Eastern coastline border, to be on the look out and to report any sightings of ski-boat MAGNUM TOO.

Concerns are rapidly increasing. It is not normal for this well known and respected local skipper to fail to report in and/or to return to Sodwana.

During the night local community and coast watchers are commended for keeping an eye out for any red distress flares or any sighting of the missing ski-boat.

It appears that the individual/s who chartered the boat may have provided false information as to their identity(this is not confirmed and may be a misunderstanding) - after arriving in the Sodwana Bay area, reportedly, on a motor bike. Efforts to locate the charter passenger/s, the skipper John Matambu and ski-boat MAGNUM TOO remain unsolved.

We are appealing to anyone with information that can assist Police in this search to contact Police on 10111 and or NSRI EOC (Emergency Operations Centre) 0870949774 or MRCC 0219383300.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported

B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.

Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.

Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.

Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.

Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.

The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.

Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."

More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.

Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.

The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."

The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.

Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.

On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.

The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.

There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
