Star Trek: Picard won’t be returning for its third season until next February, but IDW has launched this year’s between-seasons comic tale, as Star Trek: Picard — Stargazer begins its three-issue run here in September.

As with many of the previous tie-in comics connected to the modern  Star Trek era, the  Stagazer  miniseries is written by longtime collaborators Mike Johnson &  Picard co-creator Kirsten Beyer, with art by Angel Hernandez.

Here’s the synopsis for The Illyrian Enigma #1, coming in December:

With Una accused of unlawful genetic modification by Starfleet, Captain Pike sets out in search of evidence that could prove his first officer’s innocence.

Finally, IDW’s next monthly  Star Trek series kicks off this October with Star Trek #1 , a new ongoing tale centered around Benjamin Sisko — after he’s returned from the Bajoran Wormhole — who must bring together characters from many eras of the  Trek saga for his mission.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (who helmed the recently-concluded  Star Trek: Year Five series) with art by Ramon Rosanas, this new monthly comic — which is the start of a massive new comic-based continuity.

As IDW Publishing’s marketing director Keith Davidson puts it:

It’s the biggest initiative that IDW has ever undertaken for the brand in its now-14 years of Star Trek publication. Essentially, our new Star Trek series is creating a new ongoing IDW continuity, from which we will build offshoots, spin-offs, and epic events for years to come. Benjamin Sisko takes the helm of the Enterprise, supported by a crew of characters pulled quite literally from throughout Star Trek canon — even from The Original Series! Part of the fun will be seeing how the diverse personalities mesh or clash. Honestly, we’re hoping to channel with Star Trek what Marvel did when they launched their Star Wars comics a few years back — respecting the canon that came before while building a new universe for fans that’s wholly unique, unexpected, and accessible.

Writer Jackson Lanzing called the new  Star Trek monthly “a  Deep Space Nine sequel” on social media this week, and in a lengthy new interview with ComicBook.com, described the tale as one which fits into a neat year-and-a-half of time which no on-screen  Star Trek production has yet touched: the era between Voyager’s return home and the events of  Star Trek: Nemesis.

is star trek a comic

As writer Collin Kelly described it to ComicBook.com:

They’re giving us a lot of access to all the toys, with the understanding that at the end of it, we will put the toys back in the box. There is about a year and a half here of Star Trek timeline that is untouched, and within this, we can make all sorts of trouble as long as we put the characters that need to be back in the box for Nemesis.

Lanzing also talked about how this new storyline will be canon — until it’s not.

This is as close as we can, on the comic side, to being canon. We will be canon until they un-canonize us. But we are working with the shows. We are in communication with the teams… We’re taking this as an opportunity to effectively fill [the space formerly occupied by the Trek novel continuity], because a lot of that stuff was created with the understanding there would never be shows again. [But] now we know that there will be, so we are trying to create new canon that exists inside that space. But these are the characters you know. This is the canonical Benjamin Sisko sequel story. This is the last ride of Data before Nemesis. These are those stories. This is what happened to Tom Paris after he came back from Voyager.

is star trek a comic

Here’s the official synopsis for  Star Trek #1 — coming in October — where Captain Sisko is joined on his mission by first officer Data, medical officer Dr. Beverly Crusher, pilot Tom Paris, and new characters as well.

It’s stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek #2, coming in November:

Tasked with a mission from the Prophets, Benjamin Sisko enlists the help of an old friend from Qo’noS to track the ship and persons responsible for slaying the gods.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek #3, coming in December:

When strange malfunctions begin plaguing the U.S.S. Theseus mid-warp, Benjamin Sisko and his crew must band together to unveil the source behind the mysterious phenomena aboard the ship. But what initially appear as mere technological quagmires and strange happenings become a test that will determine the very fate of the universe.

As Sisko returns in IDW's new flagship 'Star Trek' series, writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly weigh in (exclusive)

Benjamin Sisko is back from the Bajoran wormhole to save the galaxy from deadly god killers in IDW's Trektastic new series.

Star Trek #2

Accomplished comic book writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly ("Star Trek: Year Five," "Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty") are relishing their dream job of crafting compelling stories within the legendary sci-fi franchise for IDW Publishing's new "Star Trek" series starring "Deep Space Nine's" Commander Benjamin Lafayette Sisko.

Joining the veteran pair on this creative " Star Trek " odyssey is artist Ramon Rosanas (Marvel's "Star Wars,") and colorist Lee Loughridge ("The Batman Chronicles," "Deadly Class") in a planet-hopping mystery to discover why the cosmic gods are being murdered.

You can get issue 1 of the relaunched "Star Trek" from IDW for just $1.99 at Amazon for Kindle.

Here’s the official synopsis:

"It's Stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of 'Trek' can stop them."

"Star Trek #1" landed on Oct. 26 and the second issue of this remastered "Star Trek" project featuring familiar characters pulled from all corners of the canon arrived today, Nov. 30, as "Star Trek: #2." Space.com chatted at length with its eager architects, Lanzing and Kelly, about their bold plans moving forward at warp speed and what inspired them to tackle this Sisko-centric series from IDW.

"We are the nerds who were playing Star Trek role playing games in our living rooms ten years ago and the kids who grew up and used it to bond with our parents," Lanzing tells Space.com. "'Star Trek' is a continuous element in both of our lives. It helped form our friendship. It's helped connect to our friends and family. A lot of people responded well to " Star Trek: Year Five ," and now seeing the response to the new launch, we’re extremely lucky to be here. Not a lot of people get to touch this IP, especially not in comics. It’s a very small group, so getting the chance to come in on it is a real privilege. We just need to do right by "Star Trek" and do the work that we as fans would want to see. Otherwise we’d bury ourselves under pressure."

"Deep Space Nine" holds a special place in both of the writers' hearts and they share a deep affinity for the Benjamin Sisko character. This was the only open story territory that gave them enough runway to do something with and was exactly what they hoped to do for nostalgia's sake, which was to bring Sisko back out of the wormhole and throw him into his next big adventure. Issue 2 of "Star Trek" from IDW is available at its full ebook price for Kindle as of its Nov. 30 release.

"Sisko is the captain who doesn’t have his own show or his own feature film," Lanzing explained. "Avery Brooks seems like he has no intention of ever returning to the character. But his character specifically says he will return, in part because Avery Brooks himself was unhappy with the idea that the first Black captain was going to leave his son and disappear into the wormhole and become an absentee father. So he made them add a line that he was coming back. Then he never came back and so there's this giant question mark of what’s up with Sisko."

Lanzing and Kelly are approaching this project with a fan-first attitude, and their unbridled enthusiasm for the material is what people are most excited about.

"We just have to keep telling stories that continue to bring us passion," Kelly said. "'Star Trek' is this universal language we can all love and adore and take something out of. But if we start thinking of ourselves as bigger than that I think we'd collapse under the responsibility and legacy we’re now so privileged to be playing a part in."

Relating to this rebooted flagship series that finds Sisko returning as a god and gathering a legacy crew borrowed from the "Star Trek" universe, the writing duo has put a fresh wrapping on a popular fan-favorite character. Lanzing explains the idea:

"We turned in a three-page document for 'Star Trek' and we came in with a very simple phrase, of 'Someone is killing the gods.' Within 'Star Trek' that might feel like an odd way to pivot in. In talking about 'Star Trek' and what made it specifically not 'Star Wars' or 'Battlestar Galactica' is that it plays with species that exist far beyond our technological level. Species that don’t operate the way that we do, that have the technological equivalent of magic. Those things are never threatened in 'Star Trek.' They're always at the top of the food chain and if those start getting taken out, that means you can put in our favorite captain, a character we knew we wanted to center this book around … Benjamin Sisko, the Emissary of the Prophets."

Star Trek issue 2 cover art showing a human hand and Klingon knife

Their elevator pitch was, "Let’s do an 'Avengers' with 'Star Trek,'" and pull characters from different eras by setting it in a time where most of these characters were alive. It's a notion that alludes back to Marvel's "Original Sin" and "Thor: The God Butcher."

"I wouldn’t say we were necessarily riffing off any of those iconic series, however, we are fans of comics first and foremost and we love the power of the crossover," Kelly added. "And "Star Trek" is really the first shared universe in modern big-budget storytelling. With our sister book, ' Star Trek: Defiant ,' which launches next year, there’s nothing more exciting than having them slam into each other."

Ramon Rosanas' illuminating, retro-cool artwork truly captures the authentic "Star Trek" tone and greatly enhances Lanzing and Kelly's carefully composed storyline.

" Art in 'Star Trek' comics has had a certain look for a very long time and there’s only a few artists who’ve done it and done it successfully," Lanzing notes. "When editor Heather Antos came in, her immediate goal was to try to take the "Star Trek" art style and push it well beyond what people were used to, and to open up a space for different kinds of comics artists to come in and play.

"Up until now, there’s been a push to make the art feel like the actors, the likenesses. But at any given time we should see Benjamin Sisko, not just Avery Brooks. Ramon is great at both. He really is a remarkable artist and he’s a lot more understated than people would think. Then Lee Loughridge is a colorist we’ve wanted to work with for ages. He’s got a great eye for it and pushes stuff forward."

Kelly feels that Loughridge's veteran contributions are essential for the book’s ultimate success.

"Lee fills in and creates a lot of texture and depth to Ramon’s pencils," he noted. "Ramon is not hyper-focused on detail in terms of likenesses, which lets Lee play, which is incredibly important to trust your artist. Especially when you think of ' The Original Series ,' which was a very colorful show. They were constantly slamming things with purple lights and hot green."

Moving forward into the second issue and beyond, two temporary artists take over for series illustrator Rosanas, each one with a slightly different take on the style.

Star Trek issue 2 cover art showing Data's face.

"Ramon is taking issues #2 and #3 off as he's doing a big crossover for #4, #5, and #6 later in the run," said Lanzing. "We have two one-off issues, #2 which takes readers deep into Klingon territory, and #3 is our Q issue. Knowing those were going to be two different tones, we brought in other artists to try some different stuff. Oleg Chudakov is going to be doing #2. He's a new Russian artist and much more expressive so you'll see that idea of pushing likeness before we lose the thread. Then we’ve got Joe Eisma, who did 'Morning Glories,' who’s an amazing artist and great at acting coming in to do Q before we bring back Ramon and settle into that tone."

Lanzing and Kelly are having a blast on this "Star Trek" title and the thrill is evident.

"We've been playing 'Star Trek' as a role-playing game for years so really one of the first jobs you have when thinking about 'Star Trek' is what pieces are on the table," Kelly adds. "Sometimes it's important to come in and build new things, but the danger can be getting so into the weeds that it can start to edge into fan fiction. We need to make sure our characters are earning it and everything is diegetic to the universe and the reality of 'Star Trek.'"

IDW Publishing's "Star Trek #2" lands on Earth on Nov. 30, 2022.

Star Trek: The 10 best Star Trek comics from Marvel, DC, IDW Publishing, and more

These are the voyages of the Star Trek cast and crew across multiple comic publishers and universes in the world of comics

Welcome to the world of Star Trek comics!

In 1966, Gene Roddenberry launched what he called 'Wagon Train to the Stars.' Although he sold the studio on the idea that Star Trek would be a Western in space, Roddenberry was more inspired by Gulliver's Travels. So he created an adventure series with something to say about political, philosophical, and social issues and shaped history. Not only did Star Trek champion and codify 'infinite diversity in infinite combinations,' it made science appealing. It even inspired numerous scientists to enter STEM and influenced fandoms far beyond its own. Slash fiction fans can thank Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) from Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS) for legitimizing the idea of shipping with Diane Marchant's 1974 Kirk/Spock story 'A Fragment Out of Time.'

The original Stat Trek was canceled after three seasons. However, with the help of a loyal fan base (known as Trekkies or Trekkers) and a successful run in syndication, the franchise didn't die when the series first ended. Nearly two decades afterStar Trek: The Original Series entered syndication, Star Trek was the number one syndicated show on television in 1986 according to Nielsen. Just one year later, Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) debuted and lead a franchise revival that inspired more Trekkies for generations to come. However, with the series off the air for a long time between Star Trek: The Original Series's end and Star Trek: The Next Generation's beginning, Trekkies were hungry for more content starring the Enterprise crew, and beta canon and fanon (fan + canon = fanon) were born.

In Star Trek, events taking place within the live-action episodes and movies are official canon or alpha canon, while other official content is mostly up for debate. The beta canon includes most of the official Star Trek novels, video games, and comic lines. But as the Star Trek TV revival continues to take Trekkies to strange new worlds, production writers have started to include details from beta canon stories. Star Trek: Prodigy introduced Rok-Tahk, a Brikarian (first appeared in the Star Trek: The Next Generation - Starfleet Academy novel, Worf's First Adventure), and chimerium (the legally controlled material used in Klingon cloaking devices first appeared in Starfleet Corps of Engineers and The Next Generation books), and both beta canon and fanon influenced the Kobayashi Maru sequence.

Beta canon is the key to boldly exploring exciting new Star Trek stories. Whether you're eager for more information about your favorite character or on the hunt for new adventures, some of the franchise's best stories are given life in the panels of a comic book. But it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Since Gold Key Comics published the first Star Trek comic book in 1967, although it couldn't use storylines from the series, thousands more Star Trek comics over multiple series have been published. Since it can be hard to know where to begin, we list the ten best storylines to get you started below.

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Mirror Broken

Star Trek comics

Space... The Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the ISS Enterprise-D and its captain, Mirror Picard. Its continuing mission: to conquer strange new worlds, to enslave new life and new civilizations all for the Terran Empire! IDW Publishing's Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken by Scott and David Tipton, J.K. Woodward, Charlie Kirchoff, and Carlos Nieto takes you into the other dimension where all of your favorite TNG heroes have grown up to value what the publisher describes as their "worst instincts and potentials" (just wait until you see Wesley Crusher's hair).

In the Mirror Universe, officers are valued for their brutality, cruelty, and cunning, not their kindness. However, that's what makes the Mirror Universe so appealing, the chance to see our Star Trek's greatest heroes wrestle with facing off against the worst versions of themselves, which forces them to confront their own demons.

Since the The Next Generation crew never went to the perennial fan-favorite Mirror Universe onscreen, the Mirror Picard versus Picard showdown in the comics is exciting to see. And that's only just the beginning; the Mirror Saga continued with Star Trek: The Mirror War.

Star Trek: The Original Series – Debt of Honor

Debt of Honor by Chris Claremont, Adam Hughes, Karl Story, Tom McCraw, and Robert M. Pinaha was initially published in 1992 when DC still had the Star Trek license. Nearly 30 years later, it was re-released at IDW, introducing it to a whole new generation of Trekkies.

The Star Trek OGN picks up after the Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home with Kirk and Gillian, the whale biologist from the film. Now living in the 23rd century, Gillian is adapting to life in the future. However, leaving her century is more challenging than expected (even the textiles don't feel right on her skin), but luckily Kirk is there to help her through. But Kirk and Gillian's vacation to check on the whales they brought to the future is only a ruse, and Kirk quickly finds himself aboard the Enterprise on a mission alongside the Klingons and Romulans.

Debt of Honor sends Kirk on a mission that leaves him thinking about his past. Interwoven throughout the story are flashbacks to the ups and downs of Kirk's career, providing excellent insight into the franchise's first captain, who is haunted by the destruction of the Enterprise and death of his son in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century

Star Trek comics

IDW's Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century by Mike Johnson, Angel Hernandez, J.D. Mettler, and Neil Uyetake is a four-issue Discovery (DISCO) miniseries featuring Grudge the Cat, Lieutenant Keyla Detmer, Science Officer Linus, and Adira Tal. Each character gets a spotlight issue, giving us a deeper understanding of the psychology and backgrounds of DISCO's less featured characters.

The series contains many highlights like the first issue, which is a flashback tale told from Queen Grudge's perspective. It delves into the monarch's relationship with Cleveland Booker. We learn how Booker found his Queen and what she loves about him in return. And yesh, it's the tasty treats! Booker always gives his Queen the 32nd Century version of Fancy Feast. Afte all, she is too good for replicator food, not like that pathetic Spot.

But this miniseries gets a special shout-out for its second issue about Adira Tal and Gray's history together. Trans fans are desperate for more representation on screen and in comics, and the storyline gets the couple's dynamic perfectly. How do you like them apples?

Star Trek: Voyager – Seven's Reckoning

Star Trek comics

Seven's Reckoning by Dave Baker, Angel Hernandez, Ronda Pattison, and Neil Uyetake is a four-issue series during Voyager's fourth season. The series explores Seven's struggle to find her individuality and humanity, leading to hysterical exchanges about humanity's propensity for distracting outbursts between the ex-Borg and Tuvok. Most importantly, Seven learns about how stories reflect a society's cultures and values, which can either encourage our individuality or enslave us.

As an ex-Borg, Seven of Nine provided the Voyager writers with endless opportunities to use her as humanity's foil. The comics are no different, and Seven's Reckoning delivers on this theme. Plus, I'm as subtle about how much I like Baker's writing as Beckett Mariner is about her crush on Jen the Andorian. But seriously, the Eisner-nominated creator's work (not to mention all the other talent) on this Voyager run is worth the price of a collection alone.

Star Trek: The Original Series – Star Trek #24 and #25

DC Comics held the license to publish Star Trek stories from 1984 to 1996. DC's main title was Star Trek, published in two series (the first one is set after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and the second after Star Trek V: The Final Frontier), comprising 136 issues, nine annuals, and several special issues. DC's Star Trek harnesses the full force of Trek mythology (and was the first publisher to do so), with characters from all over the universe making appearances.

The Star Trek run not only included stories featuring characters from The Original Series, Star Trek: The Animated Series (like the Edosian Arex and Caitian M'Ress), and the franchise films, but it also introduced new ones like Ensign William Bearclaw, Ensign Nancy Bryce, Dr. Chu-Sa, Lt. Commander Maria Morelli, Ensign Elizabeth Sherwood, and the Klingons Konom and Bernie.

Sometimes the stories in DC Comics era are straight-up sequels to storylines started in the films or TV shows. But the series shines when it introduces new ideas to the Star Trek canon.

In Star Trek #24 and #25, 'Double Blind,' by Diane Duane, Tom Sutton, Michele Wolfman, Agustin Mas, and Ricardo Villagran, the Enterprise crew is tricked into helping a lobster-like species and a domestic cat-like species (no, not the Caitians or Kizinti). Ultimately, Kirk comes up with a typical solution for him that requires ignoring the Prime Directive to end the long feud between the two species based on mutual misunderstanding and fear. Who doesn't love Captain Kirk being a Captain Kirk?

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Following approximately six months behind the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's (DS9) continuity, Marvel Presents Paramount Comics' Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series follows the Omega Squad. It features Deep Space Nine's Nog and his Academy classmates, a new group of cadets that we meet in Prime Directive, Starfleet Academy's first issue, by Chris Cooper, Chris Renaud, Andy Lanning, Jim Novak, and Kevin Somers. The comic book series also has cameo appearances from characters on the TV shows like Groundskeeper Boothby from the The Next Generation episode 'The First Duty' and Red Squad from the Deep Space Nine episodes such as 'Valiant.'

Strange New Worlds' Captain Christopher Pike even appears in Starfleet Academy when Nog and Omega Squad wind up on Talos IV to save the Talosians from the Jem'Hadar in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy #9. The story builds on 'The Cage' and 'The Menagerie Part I and Part II,' 100 years in the past on the Star Trek timeline. Pike explains to the cadets that Starfleet has since declared Talos IV off-limits because of the dangers of Talosian mind control (which unfortunately don't work so well on angry Jem'Hadar).

Star Trek: Early Voyages and Starfleet Academy were the two most popular series published by Marvel during its stint publishing Star Trek comics. However, it is great to see more of Nog as a cadet. And today, Starfleet Academy is more relevant than ever with Paramount+'s announcement that they are developing a Starfleet Academy TV series.

Star Trek: Voyager

Star Trek comics

The USS Voyager crew appeared for the first time ever in their own comic book series in 1996, published by Marvel Presents Paramounts Comics. The 15-issue series by Laurie Sutton, Jesus Redondo, Matt Webb, John Kalisz, and Chris Eliopoulos (and periodically some guest creators) covers a lot of narrative ground, following the USS Voyager crew from Voyage season two through season four.

As the first series in a long line of great Voyager content in beta canon, the Paramount run starring Captain Janeway and her crew deserves a special spot in your short box. After all, she is the first female captain to star in her own series!

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Paramount Comics picked up Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in 1996, and the series ran until 1998. Although the Deep Space Nine series takes place during the show's fourth and fifth seasons—connecting it to Nog and the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series — it continues stories from earlier seasons, as well. The best Star Trek comics allow creators to return to their favorite stories from the TV shows. And Deep SPace Nine does just that, with Lwaxana Troi, who already has a penchant for showing up when you least expect it.

On DS9, Lwaxana Troi made several memorable guest appearances in the series, with her first being 'The Forsaken,' in which the daughter of the Fifth House of Betazed, the holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, and heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed gets a huge middle-school-sized crush on Odo. Unfortunately for the Constable (who does not understand the concepts the solids call 'love' yet), he is trapped in an elevator episode and a fantastic storyline ensues. The Lwaxana and Odo story is picked up again in the season three episode 'Fascination.' And then again, in Paramount Comics.

When the Holy Rings of Betazed of Surprise shows up in issue ten by Andy Mangels, Michael Martin, Terry Pallot, Al Milgrom, John Kalisz, and Chris Eliopoulos, she upends the whole promenade for her 'Wedding of Doom.' Not only does this series do a good job of bringing you into the wacky wartime world of Deeep Space Nine, it also delivers small lines that the most ardent Trekkie will love. Garak and the Doctor have a similar exchange to the one in Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country, with Garak asking the Doctor if he's read Shakespeare in the Cardassian.

Star Trek: The Next Generation/X-Men

Star Trek comics

Star Trek: The Next Generation/X-Men: Planet X by Michael Jan Friedman is the answer to franchise fatigue, am I right? Whether you're a Trekkie or a True Believer, thinking about Sir Patrick Stewart's Captain Picard meeting Sir Partick Stewart's Professor Charles Xavier just seems like a good time. So, of course, the eponymous crossover novel starring the X-Men and TNG bridge crew made the New York Times bestseller's list when it came out, leading to a follow-up Marvel Comics one-shot.

Yes, Planet X goes there (re: the two men's likeness), which is pretty impressive considering Friedman wrote the book in 1998. Picard even comments on the similarities between him and Professor X during a holodeck simulation, "As the doctor had warned him, he and the professor bore a passing resemblance."

With the success of Planet X, the two men finally had a chance to meet in the panels of a comic book. While Planet X took place in the Star Trek Universe, Star Trek: The Next Generation/X-Men: Second Contact by Dan Abnett, Ian Edington, Cary Nord, Scott Koblish, Liquid! and Chris Eliopoulos takes place on Earth in the '90s, where the crew of the Enterprise-E must locate Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. Always the ladies' man, Jean-Luc hits it off with Storm.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

No, this isn't an adaptation of the Paramount+ series. This happened years before, in comic books.

"Gary Mitchell was an ant, and I am a lion!" Created by John Byrne in 2013, the comic book Strange New Worlds uses imagery from The Original Series to tell the untold sequel to the second pilot, 'Where No Man Has Gone Before.' Yes, that means this Star Trek photonovel is all about the USS. Enterprise crew returning to Delta Vega, and Captain Kirk must confront his past demons Gary Mitchell.

The Strange New Worlds photonovel is essential reading if you love the Star Trek: Lower Decks episode 'Second Contact.' It's not the only comic to return to Delta Vega. But it's the only Gary Mitchell comic to use Gary Lockwood's likeness to explore the character's God-like abilities. Initially planned as a one-shot, SNW did well enough to lead to Byrne's ongoing photonovel series Star Trek: New Visions. The photonovels are perfect if you are craving new stories with the The Original Series bridge crew, mainly because Byrne uses images from the series to tell the stories.

Watch the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 panel with Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, and Melissa Navia .

Worf Leads An Era-Spanning Crew In Upcoming ‘Star Trek: Defiant’ Ongoing Comic Series

IDW continues to expand their universe of Star Trek comics with the announcement of a new ongoing series titled Star Trek: Defiant , a spinoff of the upcoming ongoing Star Trek series launching later this month . Set to debut in March 2023, the new Defiant series will see Worf put together a unique crew for a series described as “ The Dirty Dozen meets Star Trek .”

Worf assembles his crew

The simply-titled Star Trek that kicks off later this month will feature a pre- Nemesis story with Benjamin Sisko returning from the Bajoran wormhole on a mission to save the gods. And this new Defiant comic will be part of that same continuity. Here is the official synopsis:

In Defiant , someone is killing the gods…but while Benjamin Sisko and the U.S.S. Theseus have been facing the threats in the higher cosmos, very real casualties are growing on lower ground. The true enemy is a man, not a god, and Worf of House Martok has put together his own crew aboard the U.S.S. Defiant in the hopes of defeating the dangerous messiah behind a genocidal cult.

IDW is describing the series as “dark” and “edgy,” and it will be pulling from “all eras of Star Trek canon.” This is evidenced by Worf’s crew which includes Spock, B’Elanna Torres, Lore, and more as they set off on “a mission with very little guarantee of success!” Ro Laren can also be seen on the cover of issue one.

Defiant #1 cover A by Angel Unzueta

Defiant is helmed by two well-known comic veterans. It is being written by Chris Cantwell ( Iron Man , Star Wars: Obi-Wan ) with art by Ángel Unzueta ( Star Wars: Poe Dameron , The Flash ).

“Ever since I made my dad take me to my first Star Trek convention when I was ten, I have been waiting for this moment,” says Cantwell in a statement. “When Heather Antos, Jackson Lanzing, and Collin Kelly reached out to me about writing the first book to spin out of their flagship Star Trek title, I wanted the quality to match my massive wells of enthusiasm; I knew this book needed to be undeniably Star Trek first and foremost, but also something new and complex that would have readers leaning forward as they engaged with a more unexpected journey to the stars. Whereas the new Star Trek book carries forward the grand tradition of Starfleet’s saga of discovery and exploration, Defiant immediately sets out to break the rules of the Federation and go on a fugitive run from Starfleet with a cast of Trek ’s best iconoclastic heroes and ne’er-do-wells, each of them straddling worlds in their identities and calibrations in their moral compasses as they embark on a high-stakes galactic manhunt…the Prime Directive be damned.”

“To be part of this amazing new Star Trek universe is a big challenge, and I love big challenges,” says Unzueta. “It will be very exciting to show how far our crew can go to save the universe, how many rules they can break just to make things right, how ‘badass’ these guys can be when compared to the more clean-cut crew of the Theseus from the ongoing series. Also, I’m working with a great writer, friend, and partner from our Iron Man days, and with my favorite editor, who is pushing me to the stars once again. I am so excited and ready to make this book a new experience for the Trek audience!”

IDW’s growing Star Trek line up

With the announcement of this title, by early 2023 IDW will have two concurrent ongoing Star Trek comic series, which will be a first for the publisher since taking on the franchise over a decade ago.

“Just when you thought Star Trek comics couldn’t get any bigger, we’re continuing to boldly explore new frontiers,” says Senior Editor Heather Antos in a statement. “Between the flagship title and Defiant , it’s safe to say that we have comics’ biggest Trek fans—Lanzing, Kelly, Cantwell, Rosanas, and Unzueta themselves—crafting what is going to be Star Trek’s biggest and boldest interconnected comics story ever. And this is only just the beginning!”

In addition to Star Trek and Defiant , IDW recently launched two new Star Trek Universe tie-in mini-series: Star Trek: Picard – Stargazer and Star Trek: Lower Decks . They also recently announced Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – The Illyrian Enigma . And they are set to release a prequel mini-series tied to the upcoming game Star Trek: Resurgence .

The folks writing this haven’t noticed that “dark” and “edgy” Star Trek hasn’t been all that popular recently?

Maybe its not popular in some circles- but it’s certainly been successful since Discovery is currently in production of its fifth season and Picard is gearing up for its third. It’s obviously resonating with people outside of the members of this particularly community.

The classic mistake of every greedy franchise owner: ditching the old fans and pleasing the new fans, no matter the cost, up to the point of making a franchise an antithesis of what it used to be. The end result is always the same: the “new fans” grow bored, find something “new and kewl” to spend their money on and when the greedy franchise owner suddenly runs out of cash brought in by the initial “new fans'” cash influx, it turns to the old fans, asking them to return. The old fans’ reply is always the same: “Oh, NOW you need us?! Where was this mindset of yours when we were telling you that you’re doing it WRONG?!” And this is what will happen to “dark and edgy” Star Trek.

I wonder, why is it that Star Trek cannot be its own POSITIVE thing and always has to emulate things which are in direct contradiction to its ethos? Why cannot Star Trek “win” in this contest and make OTHER shows try to emulate it? A little more than a decade ago everyone and their cat wanted Star Trek to become “battleSTAR TREKactica” just because Ronald D. Moore’s remake show was on TV. Today we are still dealing with the fallout of the last decade during which execs required everything, even toilet paper commercials, to emulate the “Game of Thrones,” even if there was no logical incentive to do so.

Perhaps, at one point, average people looking for entertainment had so much “light” in their lives that it made them embrace “darkness” out of spite. Maybe once they finally understand that having “darkness” for breakfast, lunch and dinner isn’t what entertainment is all about, they will welcome the “light” when it reappears. The good thing is that, sooner or later, this day will come. The bad thing is that, the way things are now, this “light” will NOT be Star Trek (or whatever remains of it) but its successor.

It’s just a comic book. It’ll be okay.

You could do worse. You could please not the new fans or the old. Like Disney Star Wars. They literally pissed off everyone. OT fans, prequel fans and sequel fans with the Rise of Skywalker. Even the new Trek’s at their worst haven’t managed that. At best they’ve been extremely poor written. With good effects and actors.

Oh man, I’m digging the cover by Malachi Ward! Worf as pop art.

I did some looking around and found that Ward did one in the same style featuring Data.

[STAR TREK PICARD SPOILER WARNING!!!!]

Lore is in Worfs crew? Do the comics have the same new rule like the novels that they are canon until contradicted by onscreen media? If so…might this that Lore is NOT a villian in Season Three??

I would hope so. I am a bit tired of seeing Brent Spiner as villain again and again :-P

I don’t know, this may actually be genius. Spiner recently courted Paramount+ for his own series. I can see the concept coming together…

Somewhere…out there in the darkness…on Planet Spiner arises a new threat. An ancient madman, possessed by an obsession: to infiltrate and destroy the Federation. Brent of the Planet Spiner (shortened to Brent Spiner or sometimes B.S.) spends centuries cloning himself and developing sentient androids to infiltrate Starfleet and the Federation.

Before long…he’ll be everywhere.

Brent Spiner: Star Trek Villain

It’s going to be huge.

The comics and novels are not canon and never have been. The shows and movies have always been free to contradict them.

It doesn’t seem THAT far fetched that Lore could actually be reprogrammed to do good instead of evil.

So Something is Killing … “The gods” *Sigh*

It sounds like you were planning to make a comment of some sort here.

Numerous noncorporeal beings in TOS and TNG and the entirety of DS9 should show you exactly how this is not a contradiction of terms. “gods” in Star Trek just means all-powerful being, which is attainable within the fictional rules of the universe. It’s a very sci-fi idea to explore what that word means, and this is coming from an atheist.

I get the *sigh* – the killing the gods thing was literally just done in Thor 4, and Q & the wormhole aliens was already a faily decent comic a few years ago. Might still give it a shot but I get the gut reaction of _ugh_

no… the Q for example are not referred as gods

I think he refers to himself that way a time or two

Allpowerfull beings may are depicted by Star Trek species as gods but in the end they are always not gods. They may be non-linear, they may be very powerfull, but in the end they are no gods.

So when a comic speaks of some beings in the Trek Universe as “The Gods” this is just a missunderstanding of how beings in Trek are being depicted.

The Bajorans may view the wormhole entitys as gods. however, no one else does! And certainly the Q are not depicted as gods.

So no… there is nothing like “the gods” in star trek. This is not marvel…

This seems to be a lead-in to PICARD season three, as it centers around Lore and Worf. Something will happen that result in Worf embracing pacifism and Lore ending up in prison. And the “gods” being killed include the Q, thus explaining that dangling question from season two. If I’m right, that has interesting implications for season three. Are B’Elanna, Ro, and Spock in it? They have two viable Spock actors now to replace Nimoy.

There is already a lead in comic to Picard Season 3 focusing on Seven and Picard on the Stargazer post season 2. This looks like something entirely different.

There can be more than one tie-in.

In any case, this comic is about someone killing gods. The monthly comic it’s spinning off from is about the wormhole entities being killed. Picard season two is about Q dying. And Picard season three features Lore, who is in this series.

It has to be related.

Its not being marketed as related and this seems like just an attempt to play in multiple parts of the Trek sandbox at once. Star Trek Countdown while initially considered canon, got contradicted on screen (eg. Captain Data)

These comics always have an extreme case of small universe syndrome. But the fans need their fanwankery in order to buy comics I guess.

Lore is really giving me some Tom Hiddleston vibes, there.

if they ever needed to do a parallel / de-aged thing Tom could totally do a great version of a Soongian-android

“post- Nemesis”? Nope, it’s pre-Nemesis…set in that gap between the end of “Voyager” and pre-Nemesis…

Star Trek: Prodigy Executive Producer, Aaron Waltke, would be game for Prodigy comic

S tar Trek: Prodigy is close to dropping its second season on Netflix, earning a spot on the streaming giant after being cancelled by Paramount+. The animated comedy/drama is an introduction to Star Trek and all of its rules and regulations and has proven to be a hit. Executive Producer Aaron Waltke, along with creators Dan and Kevin Hageman , have been leading the charge, and with innovative talent and unfailing drive, they shaped Prodigy into a show that is not only enjoyable but educational.

With the Star Trek universe always expanding and IDW Publishing bringing legacy characters back for new adventures in comic books, a follower of Waltke's recently launched newsletter "Haling Frequencies, " asked if he'd be interested in a lead writer position should the publisher decide to launch a Prodigy comic book.

Waltke said he loved writing comic books almost as much as he enjoys reading them, adding that he is a "loyalist to Star Trek: Prodigy to the end." He went on to say he'd be "absolutely game" if IDW Publishing would have him.

I love writing comic books almost as much as I do reading them, and I am a loyalist to Star Trek: Prodigy to the end. I’ve been at this long enough to learn I should never say never. I’d be absolutely game if they’d have me — and circumstances permitted. Likewise, many of the other screenwriters of Prodigy are also very talented comic book authors as well —I encourage you to look them up! — so I’m sure a Prodigy comic would be in great hands, if it becomes a possibility.Aaron Waltke

It would not be surprising for a Prodigy comic book to be on IDW Publishing's radar, especially with the overwhelming success of the first season's debut on Netflix. It would certainly be interesting to see where comics would take the characters.

And speaking of Waltke's newsletter, it's only in its second week, but if you're an aspiring storyteller, creator, and are interested in the Hollywood process, you should subscribe . Waltke has started sharing some of the projects he's working on (to the extent that he can) and gives insights into what goes on behind the scenes. He's also open to answering questions so this could be a good chance to get answers to those questions you've been dying to ask.

Spider-verse's miguel o'hara reveals roster of new elite spider-society team.

As Spider-Man 2099 and Madame Web begin building their new team, the Spider-Society, they start considering spider superheroes as candidates.

  • Spider-Man 2099 and Madame Web are forming a new Spider-Society, carefully selecting members based on bravery and skills.
  • Earth-616 already has a Spider-Society, but Marvel showcases the formation of a new team led by Miguel and Madame Web.
  • Candidates like Araña, Spider-Woman, and Web-Weaver are being considered, each offering unique powers to build a diverse team.

Warning: Contains spoilers for Web of Spider-Man #1! Spider-Man 2099 and Madame Web are trying to build a Spider-Society ; they just need to decide which Spider-people get to join. This isn't the first Spider-Society to exist within Marvel Comics; however, this is the first time Marvel has shown the formation of one from the beginning. As a result, Marvel is showing how they're building their team and considering candidates.

Web of Spider-Man #1's short story, "Spider-Society" by Alex Segura, Salvador Larroca, Guru-eFX, showcases Spider-Man 2099 and Madame Web in the beginning stages of building their new hero team. Together, these two are the perfect candidates to build a team of arachnid heroes.

Earth-616, Marvel's main universe, has a Spider-Society of its own . It's featured in Amazing Fantasy (2004) #1-3, Araña: The Heart of the Spider #5, and Spider-Man & Araña Special: The Hunter Revealed #1.

Miguel has left his universe, Earth-928, multiple times in other comics. Plus, being from the future, he knows more about the heroes of Earth-616. Whereas Spider-Man 2099 is from the future, Madame Web can see the future. She may not perfectly predict every scenario, but she can try to help calculate various eventualities.

Stan Lee's Original Spider-Man Stories Show How Marvel Can Overcome Superhero Fatigue

Spider-man 2099 names potential candidates for the new spider-society.

Miguel O'Hara only lists two candidates he'd allow on the team before being interrupted. His first choice is Araña aka Anya Corazon. Part of Earth-616's original Spider-Society, she's an excellent choice. Spider-Man 2099 mentions her bravery and focus. Plus, on top of the typical spider powers, she has the ability to blend into shadows. Miguel's next candidate is Spider-Woman. He says exactly why he wants her, calling her, " A legend. Part hero, party spy. She can make the tough calls and isn't scared of sacrifice ." Furthermore, his comments about her reveal Miguel's real criteria for the team. He says Spider-Woman makes him look soft. This makes sense with Spider-Man 2099's origin and personality ; he can be brutal.

Madame Web Has Her Own List of Candidates

Earlier in the issue, there is a list of Spider-people behind Miguel and Madame Web. It's implied that these are additional candidates. Peter Parker is an obvious choice as the first Spider-Man. That being said, Peter hasn't always had the best relationship with Miguel. Spider-Woman aka Gwen Stacey or Ghost-Spider, is another candidate up for consideration. Despite only being in the background in this scene, she'll likely be added to the team. This is foreshadowed by Miguel seeing a hallucination of Spider-Ham. Occasionally in the comics, this same hallucination of Spider-Ham serves as Gwen's inner monologue.

Miguel O'Hara first met Peter Parker in the 1995 crossover comic Spider-Man 2099 Meets Spider-Man #1 by Peter David, Rick Leonardi, Al Williamson, Steve Buccellato, and Ken Lopez.

Speaking of Spider-Ham, Miguel confirms he is up for consideration by Madame Web. However, Spider-Man 2099 also confirms he'd never consider Spider-Ham. Hopefully, the hero will still get his chance to shine. Next, Web-Weaver is on the list. Web-Weaver is a newer Marvel character, and he's the first openly-gay Spider-Man variation. In his universe, Web-Weaver aka Cooper Coen saved Peter Parker from being bitten by the radioactive spider and was bitten instead. Due to the fact they would've been bitten by the same spider, Cooper has many of the same powers as Peter Parker. Though, he does name his Spider-Sense " web sense. "

While there are other Spider-people already in consideration, one strong candidate is missing. Specifically, Silk would be a great addition to the roster . Not only does she also have all the usual spider abilities, but she has unique powers that set her apart. Similar to Miguel, Silk has claws. Due to her being bit by the same spider as Peter Parker, she can track him through the multiverse. Theoretically, this power may also extend to Web-Weaver. Regardless of who else is added to the new Spider-Society roster, Spider-Mann 2099 and Madame Web clearly have different standards, which should help build a diverse team.
