The Association are a folk-rock band hailing from California, United States who formed in 1965. Since their debut in 1966 they have released nine studio albums and are known for being one of the most popular singles bands of the late 60’s.
The seeds of The Association were sewn with the meeting of Jules Alexander and Terry Kirkman in Hawaii in 1962. The two men were budding musicians and jammed together while they could, finding that they had genuine creative chemistry with each other. However, Alexander was in Hawaii while serving a stint in the Navy, and wasn’t going to be discharged until a year later. They made a pact to form a band together once Alexander was discharged, and a year later they made good on it, moving to Los Angeles together in the mid-1960’s. The first group they formed was called The Inner Tubes, which expanded into a thirteen piece band called The Men, notable for being the first act to call themselves a “Folk-Rock” band.
However after a spell as the house band at L.A’s legendary Troubadour venue, the band split up. Not to be deterred, Alexander and Kirkmen formed the first incarnation of The Association soon afterwards, and after five months of solid rehearsal time, they scored a regular slot playing live at Pasadena, California’s Icehouse club. They auditioned for a number of record labels and were finally signed to Valiant Records, who would release their first national hit “Along Comes Mary” in 1966. The song peaked at number 6 on the Billboard charts and led to the release of the band’s first album proper “And Then...Along Comes the Association”. The album didn’t set the charts alight, but their follow up single “Cherish” did exactly that.
The song was a number one smash hit, and the band spent the rest of the 1960’s as one of California’s premier hit-makers, with another number one hit in the form of 1967’s “Windy”. Ever since then the band could populate a large village with their past members but for most part, Alexander has stayed with the band, and helms them to this day. They might not have had the staying power that some of their peers had but they have a back catalogue that no-one could argue with, and a live show that can only come from over half a century of experience. For that, The Association comes highly recommended.
Live reviews
Sometimes there seems to be little rhyme and reason in the music business. There are many instances when incredibly talented and ingenious bands slip under the spotlight while atrocities manage to create a stir in the mass public. The Association is an example of one of the music industries conundrums. The group had originality, an outstanding sense of harmonization, an understanding of song construction and a persevering drive that outreached many of their contemporaries. While they sported several hit songs and had more than a substantial career, they never managed to hit the “big time” so to speak. At least comparative to many of the pop sensations culminating in the 60s. Perhaps the lost opportunity of properly reissuing their recordings on cd may have contributed to the fizzling out of the groups career; however, for those who first had the chance to hear the bands recordings did not easily give up on the group.
The song “Windy” was one of the first tracks from my early youth that I have a conscious memory of. In my opinion that song was just as good as a Beatles tune. Of course back then I was less clouded by the bias of persisting music trends and my social climate. The Association had a sound that instantly struck a chord with their audience. Like the Beach Boys their music was so open and relatable that it seemed to apply to almost everyone.
Not only were they skilled songwriters they were natural born musicians who had an incredible sense of chemistry. In fact they are still performing to this day and haven’t seemed to decline in quality in the slightest. The group has keen precision and a knack for controlling the audience. Their instrumentation is fairly modest, but they are always able to produce interesting sounds. At some of their shows they pull out a toy-like recorder, and showcase some of the most catchy melodies on it. However their strong-suit lies in their vocal performance. Everyone in the group has a voice of gold and they make things exciting switching between members for vocal leads. But the real charm of their music comes from their godly harmonizations. The Association are a classic act and though their career has unjustly been overshadowed they absolutely should not be missed.

I have wanted to see the Association forever. I can remember the first time I heard one of their songs in the mid-sixties when I joined the Navy. So, you can imagine how excited I was to get two tickets to see the band live at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas on Friday night, November 29, 2019.
Sadly, the show was absolutely miserable. The two remaining original members are tired and the keyboard, guitar, singer son of an original member does not look like he fits in. His mannerisms and hair style (plus a black fedora) are more appropriate for a small venue bar band. The amplification system, which was probably adequate years ago, is ineffective and out of date. The video introduction doesn't compare to others I have seen for same period artists. In short, the show fell far short of expectations.
The Association has an incredible music collection. In fact, the lead singer, mentioned that three Association songs are among the top 100 of all time as measured by Billboard. With that kind of a repertoire, I was really put off when they spent nearly ten minutes playing a set of covers from the 1983 movie, "The Big Chill." My guest and I did not buy tickets to hear the Association play other group's hits.
Summer of 66 was the summer of the Association, the Beatles, Mama and the Papas and others. This evening was 95 minutes of wonderful songs of that time. As you looked around you saw those who remember that time and those who were not alive for years to come. What was common was the joy that is in that music. You could see it in everyone’s face. This is not your high production show that so often passes for entertainment in Vegas. No this is music that hit everyone in the room in their soul. If they are coming near you do yourself a favor and go see the Association. I promise you will enjoy the evening and leave with joy in your soul.
We have seen several groups with names of groups of the 1960s/1970s. Many have one original member, but always you left wanting to hear the original sound of the group. Going to The Association concert you will leave having just heard the songs you love song correctly.
Lots of good songs. Probably played about 15, only 3 of which were not their big hits (even Walk Away Renee by another artist). All the singing and harmonies were on except a couple times Jim Yester (original member @ 78!) had some difficulty at the beginning hitting the high notes (improved as the show went on). They were funny in between the songs and the music was lively and tight. I would highly recommend them to those who remember good music from the late 60s. Two of the members are originals, one is the son of an original and a couple others had stints with the group in the 80s/90s. These guys can still perform and kick out great tunes!
The Association was AMAZING and I highly recommend their show. I would go again in a heart beat. They were really funny when talking about their past and demos that they've gotten and people they have performed with. Loved "Avocado" and the "Dubuque" song. Of course they played their famous songs: "Cherish", "Windy", "Along Comes Mary", "Never My Love" and so many more. They sounded the same and their harmony is amazing. The venue is also amazing.
Hi I hope you fellows read these. Is there anyway you can come to the Detroit area to do a show? Maybe you could hook up with Tommy James n the Shondells. They live in the area and you both have some outstanding tunes. Just a thought. But I grew up in my teens when you were popping off hits on the radio, and I really Love your band. Please come out if your able to.
All my best, Mary Solak.
Generally, the group played their songs well but lead singer Jim Yester has a difficult time hitting the notes he used to do with ease. I think he's a little to old to be singing lead. The music was nostalgic and brought back good memories of when music was great!
Although Larry Ramos passed away they are still worth spending my money to see. I saw them at the Metropolis in Arlington Heights and met them after their concert. It was probably the best concert of my life. Meeting the guys was just a bonus!
Lively and inspiring, with a great mix of beloved favorites, deep cuts, and interesting covers. All in all, an enjoyable night for one and all, but gentlemen please: cut back on the anecdotes! LESS TALK MORE ROCK!

Are the PPA's two top players destined for Tour Finals triple crowns?
On the eve of Thanksgiving, the Professional Pickleball Tour (PPA PPA ) announced the players who had qualified into the Tour Finals event in San Clemente, announced the results of the “Partner Draft” for the doubles teams, and announced the round robin pools of competition for this coming weekend’s final PPA event of 2023.
Here’s a preview of the Tour Finals event, with some observations on the draft results and predictions as to how the competition will go. Useful links for this analysis are:
- Explanation of the Race from October 2023

Men’s Singles
The top eight qualifiers, and the eight players who will be in San Clemente, are:
- Federico Staksrud
- Tyson McGuffin
- Connor Garnett
- Christian Alshon
- Jay Devilliers
- Pablo Tellez
They’ve been put into these pools:
Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of September 2023
Best 5% interest savings accounts of september 2023.
- 1. Ben Johns
- 4. Connor Garnett
- 6. Christian Alshon
- 7. Jay Devilliers
- 2. Federico Staksrud
- 3. Tyson McGuffin
- 5. JW Johnson
- 8. Pablo Tellez
One would have thought that the pools would have been weighted slightly differently than they are. Pool 1 should have been seeds 1,4,5,8 and Pool 2 should have been 2,3,6,7 if they had done a standard snake draft, but it wouldn’t have appreciably changed the eventual balance of the competition.
Can anyone beat Ben Johns? Well of course: Johns has five singles PPA losses this year: Staksrud in Mesa, Alshon in Atlanta, Shick in Orange County, Joseph in Fountain Valley, and Staksrud again in the Cincy finals (to go along with the shock indoor loss to Haworth at Nationals). So he’s not invincible, but it’ll take some doing to top him. We often focus on the losses for the tour’s top players, forgetting to mention their successes: Johns has won 9 of the 14 singles events he’s entered this year and has a seasonal PPA singles record somewhere in the range of 57-5.
Pool 1 is almost certainly going to be Johns & Garnett to advance, but don’t sleep on Alshon, who has a h2h win over Ben and a few medals this season. Devilliers has suffered a few early upsets this season and seems like a long shot to advance.
Pool 2 is stacked, with three different guys who have won PPA singles golds this season. Staksrud and McGuffin both have three titles this year, along with JW Johnson, who won in April and is coming off a win at Nationals. Even though Tyson is ranked third, he’s gotten the upper hand in his h2h meetings with Federico lately, so I’ll favor him to advance in first place out of the group. Johnson is the wildcard; he hasn’t played a full slate of singles all year but does have some success.
Predictions :
- Pool 1: Johns, Garnett, Alshon, Devilliers (chalk)
- Pool 2: McGuffin, Staksrud, Johnson, Tellez
Finals : Johns over McGuffin.
Women’s Singles
The eight female singles players who will be in San Clemente are:
- Anna Leigh Waters
- Catherine Parenteau
- Mary Brascia
- Irina Tereschenko
- Lauren Stratman
- (Lina Padegimaite, who was bypassed by Judit Castillo)
- Yana Newell
So, interesting machinations of the eight qualifiers here. We know that Salome Devidze is probably ranked #2 or #3 on tour at this point, but is not a PPA exclusive player and is not listed on their rankings page. Did this exclude her from consideration for the year end championships? Did she bow out? Unknown. Furthermore, Judit Castillo did not qualify 7th; Lina Padegimaite did. Castillo is not listed in the PPA’s top 20 players. So, how did Judit get selected instead of the next ranked player? Brooke Buckner is 9th but just had a child, but #10 is Lacy Schneemann, who just finished 2nd at the most recent event and qualified for doubles. Odd.
The eight qualifying women have been put into these pools:
- 1. Anna Leigh Waters
- 4. Mary Brascia
- 6. Lauren Stratman
- 7. Judit Castillo
- 2. Catherine Parenteau
- 3. Lea Jansen
- 5. Irina Tereschenko
- 8. Yana Newell
The pool seed distributions are the same as the Men’s, and sets us up for an interesting event. Waters is obviously the dominant #1 player, even more so than Johns. ALW has exactly 3 losses in the last two years: Parris Todd in San Clemente in June 2022, Catherine Parenteau in Daytona Beach in March 2023, and to Hurricane Tyra Black in Fountain Valley in August. Two of these players aren’t even here, meaning there’s not a ton of history in this field of having success over Waters.
In Pool 1, I would expect ALW to cruise though, but I like how Stratman has been playing singles lately and will pick her to claim second. She’s coming off a bronze medal in the most recent PPA event in Daytona Beach. Castillo gets a wild card in and could surprise a bit, perhaps getting a win in group play.
In Pool 2 we get the return of Lea Jansen, who was the dominant #2 player behind Waters up until July when she retired from singles for medical reasons. Personally, I can’t wait to see her versus Catherine for the #1 spot in this group; she’s not going to go to California without at least practicing, and when she was playing full time she had better results than Parenteau. I think those two easily advance over Tereschenko (who has seen her results slip lately, especially when playing in an event with more stringent paddle testing) and Newell.
- Pool 1: Waters, Stratman, Castillo, Brascia
- Pool 2: Parenteau, Jansen, Newell, Tereschenko
Finals : It likely is a repeat of the last three PPA gold medal matches prior to the Hertz cup; Waters over Parenteau.
Men’s Doubles
So, for the doubles divisions, the top 16 doubles players qualify, then there was a partner draft that went in seed order, allowing the players to pick their partners from the pool available. Here’s the 16 men who qualified with their exact ranking:
- Collin Johns
- Dylan Frazier
- Matt Wright
- Riley Newman
- James Ignatowich
- Julian Arnold
- Thomas Wilson
Here’s how the draft went:
- #1 Ben Johns took #2 Collin Johns (his regular partner)
- #3 JW Johnson took #4 Dylan Frazier (his regular partner)
- #5 Matt Wright #9 James Ignatowich
- #6 Riley Newman took #14 Thomas Wilson
- #7 Federico Staksrud took #8 Pablo Tellez (his regular partner)
- #10 Tyson McGuffin took #16 Dekel Bar
- #11 DJ Young took #13 Jay Devilliers
- #12 Julian Arnold was thus left with #15 AJ Koller
There was some possibility that former partners Wright & Newman would team back up, since Wright had his choice of partners. But he reached down to the rising Ignatowich to run the left side and be the Batman to his Robin. This pairing makes sense in that Wright and Ignatowich have apparently agreed to be each other’s regular partners starting in January 2024. Riley opted not to take his oft-partner of late Koller and took Wilson instead, perhaps looking for an improvement on the right side. This allowed the clear current #3 team of Staksrud and Tellez to team up and make for a tough out in group play. McGuffin was able to take his 2024 planned partner Dekel Bar, a formidable team that could make waves. The rest of the teams end up being relatively untested partnerships. Side note: would have loved to see the top APP pairing of Nunnery & Daescu in this draw to see if they could make some noise. Maybe next year.
Here’s the Pools:
- #1/2: B. Johns / C. Johns
- #5/#9: M. Wright / J. Ignatowich
- #10/#16: T. McGuffin / D. Bar
- #12/#15: J. Arnold / AJ Koller
- #3/#4: JW Johnson / D. Frazier
- #6/#14: R. Newman / T. Wilson
- #7/#8: F. Staksrud / P. Tellez
- #11/#13: DJ Young / J. Devilliers
With all due respect to the players here, the Johns brothers couldn’t have asked for a better draw. They avoid the clear cut #2 and #3 teams on tour and have to mostly contend with mashed-up teams of players who don’t normally play with each other in the group stage. Pool 2 looks fun; the Staksrud/Tellez team will be tough to beat, and Wilson will have to play better than he did at MLP Dallas to power Newman into the playoffs.
- Pool 1: Johns/Johns, Wright/Ignatowich, McGuffin/Bar, Arnold/Koller (chalk)
- Pool 2: Johnson/Frazier, Staksrud/Tellez, Newman/Wilson, Young/Devilliers
Finals: Johns/Johns over Johnson/Frazier, just as we’ve seen over and over lately.
Women’s Doubles
Here’s the 16 Women who qualified with their exact ranking:
- Anna Bright
- Callie Smith
- Lucy Kovalova
- Allyce Jones
- Meghan Dizon
- Jessie Irvine
- Etta Wright
- Vivienne David
- (Jackie Kawamoto, who declined the invitation)
- Jade Kawamoto
- Lacy Schneemann
- Jorja Johnson
Jorja slips in despite not qualifying directly when Jackie Kawamoto bowed out, likely due to her “real” job working for the NCAA running competitions.
- #1 Waters took #2 Parenteau (her regular partner)
- #3 Bright took #11 David
- #4 Smith took #5 Kovalova (her regular partners)
- #6 Jones took #10 Wright (a somewhat regular partner)
- #7 Jansen took #14 Kawamoto
- #8 Dizon took #17 Jorja
- #9 Irvine took #16 Schneemann
- #12 Tereschenko was left with #15 Newell
- #1/#2 A. Waters / C. Parenteau
- #6/#10 A. Jones / E. Wright
- #8/#17 M. Dizon / J. Johnson
- #9/#16 J. Irvine / L. Schneemann
- #3/#11 A. Bright / V. David
- #4/#5 C. Smith / L. Kovalova
- #7/#14 L. Jansen / Jade Kawamoto
- #12/#15 Y. Newell / I. Tereschenko
Pool 1 gives the clear top ladies team a relatively easy pathway into the semis. Jones passes on her regular partner from earlier this year (Jansen) to take her more recent regular partner in Wright and should be competitive. Dizon (who won a gold earlier this year with Wright) reaches down to pick the youngest player in Jorja Johnson; this could be a dangerous team if Jorja can hold her own on the right.
Pool 2 featured some interesting draft choices: Bright had her pick of players and opted for David (who she had some events with earlier this year) instead of Dizon (who she’s played with a bunch more recently with some success). This may leave them at a disadvantage to the current #2 team Smith & Kovalova, who are coming off two straight silver medal performances and are quite smooth together. Jansen will like having the lefty Kawamoto on her right side and could surprise.
- Pool 1: ALW/Parenteau, Jones/Wright, Dizon/Johnson, Irvine/Schneemann (chalk)
- Pool 2: Smith/Kovalova, Bright/David, Jansen/Kawamoto, Newell/Tereschenko
Finals: ALW/Parenteau over Smith & Kovalova, a rematch of the last couple PPA gold medal matches.
Mixed Doubles
Here’s the 16 players who qualified with their exact ranking in Mixed (with genders combined)
- Jesse Irvine
- #1 Waters selected #2 Johns (her regular partner)
- #3 Newman picked #6 David
- #4 Bright picked #5 Ignatowich (her regular partner)
- #7 Johnson picked #8 Johnson (her brother and regular partner)
- #9 Parenteau picked #10 Wilson
- #11 Irvine picked #13 Frazier
- #12 McGuffin picked #16 Jansen
- #14 Kovalova picked #15 Wright (her regular partner)
Newman bypassed the player (Irvine) that he’s been playing with as of late to pick David, an excellent right-sided player. Ironically, the exact same thing happened in the Women’s doubles draft when Bright bypassed others in favor of David as well. This speaks volumes to David’s prowess on the right side.
Newman’s pick allows the regular teams of Bright/Ignatowich and Johnson/Johnson to pick each other and make it that much tougher for all the teams below them. Parenteau in particular had a couple of really good Male options in Frazier and McGuffin, but chose Wilson instead curiously. Does Catherine plan on playing the left in mixed with right-side dominant Wilson? McGuffin ended up with Jansen, which could make for some interesting machinations on the court since the two used to be partners and had a relatively public falling out mid 2023. 0Meanwhile through either pre-arrangement or the luck of the draw, on and off-the court partners Kovalova and Wright end up together by default as the last two remaining players and makes for a really tough last-place seed in Pool 2.
- #1/#2 A. Waters / B. Johns
- #4/#5 A. Bright / J. Ignatowich
- #9/#10 C. Parenteau / T. Wilson
- #12/#16 T. McGuffin / L. Jansen
- #3/#6 R. Newman / V. David
- #7/#8 J. Johnson / JW Johnson
- #11/#13 J. Irvine / D. Frazier
- #14/#15 L. Kovalova / M. Wright
By luck of the pots, #1 Waters & Johns ends up with perhaps the 2nd most dangerous team going in Bright & Ignatowich in their pool. McGuffin and Jansen are a wild card; both are seemingly better than their gender doubles rankings but are the last seed in the Pool. In Pool 2, David has a slew of mixed medals this year, but all with her regular partner Wilson; how will she mesh with the dominant Newman on the court? I think this leaves an opening for the Johnson siblings to sneak in as group winners. Can Wright & Kovalova get an upset here? Tougher since Wright isn’t a natural left-sided men’s player. Any way you look at it, the depth of Mixed Doubles on tour is on display clearly here, and these round robin groups will be great to watch for neutrals.
- Pool 1: ALW/Johns, Bright/Ignatowich, McGuffin/Jansen, Parenteau/Wilson
- Pool 2: Johnson/Johnson, Newman/David, Kovalova/Wright, Irvine/Frazier
Finals: a group-play rematch between ALW/Johns and Bright/Ignatowich, with both the #1 players in the world securing a triple crown on the weekend.
Play starts up on Thursday 11/30/23 at 1pm EST/10am PST. Tune in to either Pickelballtv.com or the Tennis Channel (as per the broadcast schedule linked here) for coverage until the finals on Sunday afternoon, which are being broadcast on Fox Sports 1 at 7pm EST/4pm PST Sunday night 12/3/23. Hopefully the PPA will also be simulcasting on YouTube as they normally do so we can get the inevitable stream of comments during Tyson’s match about how illegal his serve is.

AN OUTRAGEOUS CONCERT EXPERIENCE
The Turtles
Jay & The Americans
The Association
Badfinger ft. Joey Molland
The Cowsills
Best known for their harmony-heavy California pop sound. With hits such as Elenore , She’d Rather Be With Me , It Ain’t Me Babe, You Showed Me and the title of the tour, Happy Together , the band ruled the airwaves in the late ‘60s. Ron Dante joins the group to delight with his own mega-hit, Sugar Sugar .
We are proud to present Jay and the Americans! Few groups have ever reached the musical heights with hits from 1962-1971. This group charted an amazing 5 Billboard Top 10 hits and 12 Top-20 hit records. Their breakout hit was She Cried . Their next chart hit was Only In America , which they followed with hit songs Come A Little Bit Closer , Cara Mia and This Magic Moment , which hit the Billboard Top 10.
One of the most successful bands to come out of the 60’s, The Association has sold millions of records. Their album, The Association’s Greatest Hits (Warner Brothers) is now double platinum and continues to be one of the longest best-selling albums in the history of the company. A few of their hits include Cherish, Windy, Never My Love, and Along Comes Mary.
Joey Molland
From their legendary lineup, Joey Molland continues the unforgettable legacy of Badfinger. One of the original signings to the Beatles’ Apple Records label. They had their first hit single with a Paul McCartney penned song, Come and Get It , which went to #7 in the U.S. charts. Badfinger followed this with their own compositions No Matter What , Day After Day (produced by George Harrison), and Baby Blue , which went to #8, #4 and #14 respectively.
Also known for their harmony-driven pop sound, The Vogues had numerous Top 10 hits with singles such as Five O’Clock World, My Special Angel, and Turn Around Look At Me .
The harmonious family act of brothers and sister Bob, Paul, & Susan Cowsill, who inspired the smash hit ‘70s television show, “The Patridge Family”. They are sure to delight with their best-known songs, Hair, Indian Lake , The Rain, The Park, & Other Things and more.

The LPGA Tour will be implementing a new format for this year’s T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas, Nev. Instead of group-based match play, the event will now feature a combination of stroke and match play to determine who will take home a share of a $2 million purse and 500 Race to the CME Globe points.
Here's a quick day-by-day breakdown of the format for the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards:
Wednesday and Thursday
Stroke play with a cut after 36 holes to the top 65 and ties
Stroke play with a cut after 54 holes to the top-eight players; in the event of a tie for the last match-play spot(s), a hole-by-hole stroke-play playoff will be utilized to decide the final match-play spot(s)
- Match-Play Seeding: For ties within the top-eight, match-play seeding will be determined using the following criteria: lowest score from the third round, then lowest score from the second round, then lowest score from the first round and finally, Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking as of Monday, April 1.
- Seeding for players in a playoff for the final match-play spot(s) will be determined by those players’ scores on the playoff holes if the scores are different. If the playoff scores are the same, seeding will then be determined by the above criteria.
Single-elimination match-play bracket; Quarterfinals in the morning and Semifinals in the afternoon

PGA Tour 2023 fall schedule to include seven tournaments, $56.6 million in purses
The PGA Tour announced its fall 2023 schedule on Wednesday. There will be seven events "that will provide greater drama and more immediate consequence than ever before" with purses totaling $56.6 million.
The fall slate, which is a continuation of the spring season for the first time since 2013, will run from September through November with a break for the Ryder Cup.
Jon Rahm has been dominant so far during the 2023 season. The Spaniard is coming off his first Masters win , which brings his championship total this year up to four.
He's not the only one making headlines so far this season as Tiger Woods made his PGA Tour return at the Genesis Invitational . He attempted to play at the Masters, but withdrew midway through the third round at Augusta after he fell to last place while in "constant" pain.

TOUR Championship raises record $6.96 million for local nonprofits in 2023
TOUR Championship announced a record $6.96 million charitable donation from the 2023 tournament, up from $5.5 million in 2022.
The announcement was made during Drew Charter School ’s annual Senior Walk, where 32 of the 111 graduating students have been part of the school’s cradle-to-college/career continuum from kindergarten through 12 th grade.
With the support of its partners Coca-Cola, Southern Company and Accenture, the TOUR Championship has now raised more than $54 million for local nonprofits since the event was first staged at East Lake Golf Club in 1998, including its five charitable beneficiaries: East Lake Foundation, First Tee – Metro Atlanta, Focused Community Strategies, Grove Park Foundation, and Purpose Built Schools Atlanta.
“The unwavering commitment of our incredible partners, local business community and our loyal fans continues to put the TOUR Championship in a position to invest in our local community year after year,” said TOUR Championship Executive Director Alex Urban in a press release. “Charitable giving remains at the heart of the TOUR Championship, and it’s a privilege to highlight the generational impact Drew Charter School and the East Lake Foundation are making in East Lake and across the Greater Atlanta Metro area.”
Drew Charter School, established in 2000 as the city of Atlanta’s first public charter school, serves as a key partner along with East Lake’s two early learning centers, Sheltering Arms and the East Lake Early Learning Academy, in the cradle-to-college and career education continuum within the holistic East Lake neighborhood revitalization led by the East Lake Foundation. Drew’s innovative Project-Based Learning approach with an integrated STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) framework and strong foundation in literacy helps students reach their highest potential. Serving more than 1,900 students in grades Pre-K through 12, the school graduated its first class in 2017 and is committed to ensuring 100% of its students are prepared for post-secondary success.
“We are incredibly grateful to the TOUR Championship and its proud partners for their unwavering commitment to fostering transformative change across the city of Atlanta,” said Ilham Askia, President and CEO of the East Lake Foundation, in the release. “Together, we’re cultivating pathways to prosperity through initiatives like Drew Charter School’s extraordinary College and Career Readiness program. Thanks to support from the TOUR Championship, we are shaping futures, creating opportunities, and building a legacy of success that resonates far beyond the greens.”
The TOUR Championship will also continue its support of First Tee – Metro Atlanta and the annual “HOPE Tee Shot,” a tournament tradition that selects one boy and one girl from First Tee – Metro Atlanta to hit opening tee shots at the tournament. In 2022, the TOUR Championship announced the creation of the HOPE Shot Scholarship, which is funded by Accenture and provides $5,000 for each HOPE Tee Shot honoree to help achieve their dreams in golf and in life.
In addition to the 2023 tournament’s $6.96 million charitable total, the event raised more than $750,000 through the TOUR Championship Charity Showcase – an 18-hole exhibition staged a month before the 2023 TOUR Championship – that featured former NFL wide receiver Victor Cruz, former University of Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, and World Long Drive competitor Alexis Belton. The exhibition was supported through the efforts of TOUR Championship Proud Partner The Coca-Cola Company and other Atlanta-based corporations.
The TOUR Championship will make a return to Labor Day weekend in 2024, with tournament dates set for Aug. 28 – Sept. 1, as the PGA TOUR’s top 30 players compete in the FedExCup Playoffs finale for their chance to win the FedExCup and the season title. Tickets are on sale now at TOURChampionship.com/tickets.

The Appaloosa Horse Club
The Appalossa Horse Club (ApHC) is an international breed registry located in town called Moscow, in Idaho, USA. The club is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Appaloosa breed. Among all the Appaloosa horse registries, the ApHC is by far the largest one.
Today, Appaloosa organizations affiliated with ApHC exist in many countries.
Registration
According to ApHC rules, the Appaloosa is “ a breed defined by ApHC bloodline requirements and preferred characteristics, including coat pattern ”.
To register a horse as Appaloosa with the ApHC, the horse must have two registered Appaloosa parents, or one registered Appaloosa parent + one parent that is registered in one of the other approved breed registries. These approved breed registries are limited to Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses and Arabian Horses.
Exception: If a gelding or spayed mare with unknown pedigree is Appaloosa colored, the owner of the horse can apply to have it registered with the ApHC under the Hardship Registration clause.
Additional rules
- A horse that meets the bloodline requirements without displaying the recognized color pattern can still register with the ApHC. It will be registered as a non-characteristic Appaloosa. Non-characteristic Appaloosas can only be shown at ApHC events if a DNA test has proven that it has the required parentage, and the owner pays an extra fee to enter the horse into the ApHC Performance Permit Program (PPP).
- The ApHC size requirement for a mature Appaloosa is at least 14 hands unshod. Sufficiently young horses can be registered even if they are smaller than this (even though it is impossible to know if they will fulfill the requirement as they mature).
- A horse with excessive white markings not associated with the Appaloosa pattern (e.g. the markings associated with a pinto horse) can only be registered if DNA testing proves that both parents are ApHC registered.
ApHC horse shows
Every year, the ApHC holds three nationally recognized horse shows:
- The National Appaloosa Show
- The World Championship Appaloosa Show
- The Youth World Championship Appaloosa Show
Appaloosa racing
Horses that perform well in Appaloosa races can earn various awards from the ApHC, such as regional ApHC awards and year-end awards. There is also the Racing Register of Merit.
The ApHC records world records and track records for Appaloosa racehorses.
The Appaloosa Competitive All-breed Activities Program (ACAAP)
The Appaloosa Competitive All-breed Activities Program (ACAAP) was created to make it possible for the ApHC to recognize achievements in all-breed competitions where Appaloosas partake.
The National Color Breeding Racing Council
Since 1994, the National Color Breeding Racing Council has promoted Appaloosa racing and Paint racing as a joint venture.
The Appaloosa Breeders’ Trust
The use of Furosemide and Acetazolamide
Since 2007, the ApHC allows Appaloosas to show even if they are being treated with the drugs furosemide and acetazolamide.
Furosemide (trade name: Lasix) is used to prevent bleeding in horses that are inclined to bleed from the nose when carrying out strenuous work, e.g. during a race.
Acetazolamide is used to prevent seizures in horses who suffer from a genetic condition known as Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP). According to ApHC rules, only a horse tested positive for HYPP is allowed to show while being treated with acetazolamide.
Permitting these two drugs are controversial, since they can be used as drug maskers and make it more difficult to detect the presence of other drugs in the horse. Both the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI), which governs international and Olympic equestrian competitions, ban the use of furosemide.
The American Appaloosa Association
In 1983, The American Appaloosa Association was formed as a reaction against a rule change that made it possible for certain plain-colored horses to be included in the ApHC registry. The American Appaloosa Association is based in Missouri.
