10 of the Best Mediterranean Cruises for Every Type of Traveler

Here are 10 of the best Mediterranean cruises to take in 2022 and 2023.

week long cruise mediterranean

White Rain/Courtesy of Viking Cruises

The Mediterranean Sea touches 22 nations and borders more than 28,000 miles of coastline, according to the  Europe Environment Agency . From the Greek Islands to Egypt, Croatia to Morocco, and Slovenia to Spain, the rugged coastlines dip into the crystalline waters, providing a connection point to some of the most intriguing destinations on the planet. But, rather than traversing these destinations by car, train, or plane, visitors can see and do more by taking to the water for a Mediterranean cruise.

From seeing historical monuments to experiencing local cuisine, shopping in some of the most luxurious places on Earth, and visiting awe-inspiring beaches, cruising provides stellar connections to Mediterranean countries. These cruises also cater to every type of traveler — from multigenerational families to solo travelers with options for adults only and all ages. Here are 10 of the best Mediterranean cruises to check out for your next vacation.

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn cruises are made for those who enjoy a touch of luxury. The cruise line offers all-inclusive options, making it easy to relax onboard and just enjoy the ride. Seabourn also offers various lengths and destinations for its cruises, including seven, 10, 14, and 21-day options, so everyone can find the one right for them.

Trip to Try:  7-day Classic Greek Isles and Ephesus

The week-long trip on the Seabourn Encore offers a glimpse at a few of Greece’s best islands. Departing from Athens, the journey stops in Patmos, Agios, Mykonos, and Skiathos but also sprinkles in a few Turkish delights, including Kusadasi and Bozcaada, before disembarking in Istanbul. Excursions include guided tours of historical sites like the Grotto of St. John in Patmos and wine tastings in Bozcaada.

Viking Cruises

Those looking for an adults-only option will find exactly what they need with Viking Cruises. The company is strictly for guests ages  18 and up , providing a more mature cruising environment. The company stops in dozens of ports, making finding a cruise that fits your travel desires a snap. And the cruise line offers free shore excursions to enable all guests to experience the ports to their fullest.

Trip to Try:  Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn

Spend 22 days with Viking on the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sojourn. The trip takes guests to seven countries, including Spain, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Monaco, and France, with stops in both major and smaller ports. Those looking to enhance the journey can book with “inclusive value,” which adds one complimentary shore excursion, free Wi-Fi, beer, wine, and soft drinks, visits to UNESCO sites, and more to allow for more time spent traveling and less time worrying about pricing. Guests can also book pre- and post-trip stays in ports of call if they aren’t ready to go home after three weeks on the water.

Azamara is a luxurious option, but it’s not just about glitz and glamour on this line. The cruise line also emphasizes hyper-local experiences to allow its passengers to dive deep into the history, food, culture, and life of its ports of call, even if they’re there just for a day. The cruise line offers a variety of destinations and cruise lengths, including 10, 12, and 15-night voyages, some of which include overnight stays in the ports so guests can get the full scope of a destination.

Trip to Try:   15-night Pharaoh Kings and Emperors

Make your way through five counties (Italy, Egypt, Israel, Cyprus, and Greece) on this more than two-week adventure. The voyage highlights destinations ruled by famed pharaohs, kings, and emperors and emphasizes the region’s spectacular history. Shore excursion options include exploring the ruins of Pompeii, seeing the biblical destinations of Nazareth and Galilee, and simply soaking in the ambiance of Capri for an entire day.

Want personalized service at every turn? Book an Oceania cruise. The cruise line prides itself on its low guest-to-crew member ratio, ensuring your every need is easily met. The company offers plentiful options when it comes to Mediterranean sailings, including seven, 14, 21, and even 38-day cruises for those who can’t get enough. With this cruise company, you’re almost spoiled with choice, making it hard to pick just one itinerary. So maybe, think about it as this year’s trip, then the next, then the next, and on and on forever, because there are just so many options available.

Trip to Try:   Monte Carlo to Athens

The 10-day trip takes sailors through ultra-luxe ports, including visits to Monte Carlo, Saint-Tropez, Florence, Rome, Valletta, Rhodes, and Athens. From the old villages to the glittering casinos, the shore excursions with this journey abound. Though there’s plenty to do onboard too, including wine tastings, guest lectures, and fun-filled trivia nights with fellow guests.

Celebrity Cruises

Bernard Biger, Chantiers de l'Atlantique/Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Travelers vacationing with the entire family — from grandma to kids — should check out Celebrity Cruises. The cruise line offers more options for everyone onboard (think kids club to casinos), as well as varied shore excursions and affordable pricing options to make it a more viable trip for larger groups.

Trip to Try:   Best of Italy and Croatia

The nine-night trip takes guests to seven ports through Italy and Croatia, providing varied terrain and plentiful shore excursion options. Visit beautiful seaside towns like Portofino, explore the Venetian canals, and enjoy the ship's amenities during days at sea.

Related: What to Know About All 16 Ships in the Celebrity Cruises Fleet

Silversea is tailor-made for those who like to cruise with fewer passengers onboard. The line offers ships with between 51 to 364 suites, meaning they max out at far fewer passengers than its larger counterparts, which enables more personalized service and higher-end amenities. It also offers all-inclusive packages to reduce the stressors that often come with pay-as-you-go travel.

Trip to Try:   Athens to Venice

This 22-day trip tracks its way through 20 ports via five countries, including Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, Greece, and Turkey. Walk the cobblestone streets on the Greek Islands, see the colorful coastline in Marmaris, admire the glittering lights from the homes that snake their way up Lovćen Mountain, and more. Onboard, dine in one of the ship’s eight restaurants, take a dip in the top deck pool, or lounge in a common space to regale your fellow guests about the day’s adventure.

Holland America

Michel Verdure/Courtesy of Holland America Line

Holland America doesn’t have the wide-ranging options like other cruise lines on this list, however, the sailings it does offer are top-notch. Holland America also offers a varied pricing list to allow people to choose the right price point for them, with rooms ranging from interior staterooms that come with 151 square feet to over-the-top suites with 712 square feet to stretch out in.

Trip to Try:  12-day Adriatic Dream

For 12 glorious days, you can set sail through the Mediterranean with Holland America. The trip includes stops in Italy (including Venice, Sicily, Amalfi, and Rome), Greece (including Katakolon, Souda, and Mykonos), Albania, and Malta (including Valletta and Mgarr). When not exploring at port, make sure to take advantage of the ship’s luxurious spa, which comes with the bonus of the soft rocking of the waves to lull you into tranquility.

Princess Cruises

Danny Lehman/Courtesy of Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is yet another on the list that may not have a massive selection of Mediterranean options, but it more than makes up for it with stellar excursions, plentiful onboard entertainment, kids and teen offerings, and the fact that it now has “The Princess Luxury Beds” onboard. The cruise line created the beds in a special collaboration with a sleep expert to ensure every guest leaves feeling fully recharged.

Trip to Try:  14-day Mediterranean and Israel

The two-week trip stops in 10 different ports in Italy, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus. It offers dozens of shore excursions to take part in, including historical tours, vineyard tours and wine tastings, local market visits, and so much more. Room options range from interior staterooms to massive premium suites with 119-foot balconies so you can let the fresh ocean breeze in.

Cunard Line

Classic, elegant, and forever in style, Cunard Line is the cruise to choose if chicness is your top priority. Its boats are decked out in luxurious styling, including the Queen Elizabeth , which makes its way through the Med with art deco decor, plush sundeck furnishings, and high-end dining experiences included.

Trip to Try:  Western Mediterranean

Take the seven-night journey on Cunard’s Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona to Mallorca, Corsica, Rome, and Naples. Visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, shop and eat your way through Rome, walk in the footsteps of Napoleon Bonaparte in Corsica, and so much more.

Royal Caribbean

Courtesy of Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean is the line to choose for those traveling in groups with varied interests and age levels. Think, the kids who want to play all day, the adults who want to lounge by the pool, the friend who wants to explore a city’s history through tours, or the friend who wants to stay up all night enjoying the onboard entertainment. And, best of all, it’s one of the few in the Med to offer options for those who are short on time or want to tack on a quick sailing to a longer trip.

Trip to Try:  3-night Cyprus Cruise

Spend three perfect days sailing from Haifa, Israel to Limassol, Cyprus, and back again. The quick cruise is the perfect way to get on the water if you just want to spend a weekend at sea on an otherwise land-bound trip. Check out a few shore excursions, or go it alone, knowing you have the perfect place to call home, even for a few days, each night.

Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Local connections

From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. On a Mediterranean cruise, voyage to an olive tree farm just outside of Provence, and join your hosts for a unique olive oil tasting. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.

More ashore

Enjoy even more opportunities to experience the colors, cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Witness the beautiful sunset in Mykonos on a Greek cruise. Sit front-row for a flamenco dance, and savor a paella dinner during an evening in Barcelona. Or stroll the illuminated streets of Genoa with gelato in hand after a traditional Italian dinner.

Mediterranean Cruise Onboard Experience

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

Accomodations

Your home away from home

Your stateroom is where you rest and recharge between adventures. That’s why every room is equipped with the expertly designed Princess Luxury Bed, 100% Jacquard-woven cotton linens and our SLEEP program created by a board-certified sleep expert. From ship to shore, appease your appetite with one-of-a-kind dining experiences on every Mediterranean cruise itinerary.

Mediterranean cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

No two Mediterranean cruises are the same. Some bring travelers to the French and Italian rivieras for food, wine and cultural pursuits. Others head east to the Greek Islands, where passengers alternate days sipping ouzo at a beachfront taverna with trips to ancient sites. Each itinerary is a mix of urban tourist capitals — Barcelona! Rome! Istanbul! Jerusalem! — and sleeper gems, such as Portofino, Italy, or Kotor, Montenegro.

If you've never been to Europe, you may feel overwhelmed by destination choices. If you know which ports are on your must-see list, you might be more stumped by which cruise line to choose or which specific itinerary will be the best for you.

Know that you can't see everything in one Mediterranean cruise — even on sailings that run multiple weeks. Once you let go of your need to see and do it all and accept that you're on a sampler tour, you'll be better able to make your cruise selections and enjoy the ports your ship does visit.

Get started with this Mediterranean cruise guide. You'll learn the basics of itineraries, cruise lines, destinations, when to go and when to book your European adventure at sea.

Why cruise to the Mediterranean?

week long cruise mediterranean

Many of the European countries on your travel bucket list lie along the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Egypt. A cruise lets you hit many of the hot spots (the French Riviera, Barcelona and Venice, Italy) on one trip without having to navigate multiple hotels, transportation between cities and making dinner reservations in foreign languages.

For some people those experiences are a key part of travel. However, for vacationers who want all the attractions without the hassle, a cruise is an ideal way to explore the Mediterranean. This type of European cruise can be especially alluring to honeymooners, families and older couples.

Mediterranean cruises beckon travelers with a love of culture and history. Visit the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, or the Colosseum in Rome; see Michelangelo's David in Florence, Italy; or make a pilgrimage to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Take a tour to a medieval town or marvel at the construction of a soaring cathedral. If you've always wanted to see the pyramids in Giza, Egypt; the ruins in Ephesus, Turkey, and Pompeii, Italy; Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona; and the famous casino in Monaco, you can do it easily on a Mediterranean sailing.

You can also eat your way through the markets, cafes, trattorias, gelato shops and crepe stands in the ports you visit. Sample local wines at vineyards in France and Italy, or sip ouzo or limoncello made on the premises.

When do cruises go to the Mediterranean?

You might be surprised to learn that cruise ships sail the Mediterranean year-round.

The majority of ships, however, arrive in the spring and depart in the fall, choosing warmer climes like the Caribbean for holiday sailings. Only a few hardy stalwarts remain through the winter months. Most of those are European-based lines, such as Costa Cruises , MSC Cruises and Celestyal Cruises , but Viking also braves chilly weather for its destination-focused itineraries in Europe.

Best Mediterranean itineraries

You can find a variety of weeklong Mediterranean cruises, but if you've got the time, nine- to 14-night sailings are not uncommon. Seven-night cruises are best if you're short on time or want to tack on a few days in Barcelona, Rome or Athens before or after your cruise. Longer itineraries are ideal for experiencing a greater variety of destinations and traversing more of the Med.

Here are some the best Mediterranean cruise itineraries you should consider for your European vacation.

Western Mediterranean

The classic Western Mediterranean cruise sails between Barcelona and Rome, and calls in ports in Spain, France, Monaco and Italy. This is your chance to explore Tuscany and the French Riviera, as well as hit up Florence, Monte Carlo, Naples and islands such as Corsica, Mallorca, Sicily and Sardinia. Just watch out: Marquee destinations like Rome and Florence are both located an hour or more from the cruise port, so get ready for long bus rides and long days off the ship.

Greece and Turkey

The classic Eastern Mediterranean cruise sails out of Athens or Istanbul and visits a mix of historic places (Delphi, Ephesus via Kusadasi, Rhodes) and sun-drenched islands (Mykonos and Santorini).

Adriatic Sea

Some so-called Mediterranean cruises actually spend most of their time on the Adriatic Sea, sailing from Venice and visiting ports in Croatia and Greece, and sometimes Montenegro and Albania. You may also find an Adriatic sailing wrapped into longer Western or Eastern Mediterranean cruises.

The most easterly of the Eastern Mediterranean itineraries, Holy Land cruises spend time in Israel and sometimes Egypt, often with overnight stops or multiple days spent in each country to maximize touring opportunities. These sailings may also call in Cyprus or ports in Greece and Turkey.

Best Mediterranean cruise lines

week long cruise mediterranean

Most major cruise lines send at least one ship to the Mediterranean every year. Even Carnival Cruise Line , known for its affordable cruises out of U.S. home ports, offers some Mediterranean sailings, as does Disney Cruise Line , which typically bases its ships near its theme parks.

If you're looking for a bigger ship, Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are the best choices as they base a handful of ships in the Mediterranean each year, arriving in the spring and departing in the fall. These lines offer a variety of itinerary choices, so you can find the Mediterranean ports you most want to visit. You'll also find lots of restaurant choices and evening entertainment options to keep you occupied at night when the ship is sailing.

Couples or families with grown children looking for longer sailings and a destination focus should consider Viking, which offers eight- to 15-night cruises through the Mediterranean, including three- and four-week voyages for retirees (or workationers?) who have the time for a most thorough exploration of the region.

Which luxury line is best for your Mediterranean cruise will come down to what you're looking for in a luxury ship and a European itinerary. However, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises stand out for including a large variety of shore excursions in their cruise fares. If you're a foodie, these two lines plus Oceania Cruises are notable for their culinary tours in port, plus destination-themed cooking classes on board.

Things to do in the Mediterranean

Sightseeing is a big component of Mediterranean cruises, whether that's exploring a historic site like the Roman Forum or the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia; visiting cathedrals in Florence and Barcelona; or touring medieval villages, forts and old towns. You might want to skip the formal tours and merely wander around the port town, browsing local shops or grabbing a coffee or snack in a local cafe.

Culinary tours are also popular here. You can choose from roving food tours, cooking classes, winery visits and tastings, and meals made with local produce and cheeses in beautiful villa or farmhouse settings.

Travelers looking to stretch their legs might want to sign up for cycling tours in city and country settings, hike around a volcano on Santorini or Sicily, or even take a kayak for a spin in Croatia or Greece.

A beach day is possible in the Greek Islands or along the French Riviera, and many ports will have sightseeing cruises.

Best Mediterranean cruise ports

week long cruise mediterranean

Everyone has their favorite list of the best Mediterranean cruise ports (as evidenced by the discussion I just had with TPG's cruise team about which to include). Some travelers want to hit all the most popular cities, while others prioritize the ability to walk right off the ship into the heart of the town. Some ports are better for historical attractions, others for cafe culture or outdoor activities.

The following cruise ports are generally standouts, no matter your travel style.

Barcelona: Both an embarkation port and a port of call, depending on your itinerary, Barcelona has much to offer first-timers and repeat visitors. Cruise ships dock at the end of Las Ramblas, the main thoroughfare in the old part of the city, so it's easy to leave the ship and simply wander. Don't miss Gaudi's fantastical buildings or a meal of tapas.

Monte Carlo, Monaco: Monte Carlo is both a fascinating port on its own and a gateway to the French Riviera. In town, you can walk to the casino, palace and stunning oceanographic museum. From town, you can take the twisty-turny Corniche coastal roads to destinations like Nice, Eze, Cannes and Grasse.

Dubrovnik, Croatia: Even if you're not in it for the "Game of Thrones" tour, you will be captivated by Dubrovnik and its famous walled city. Walk the walls or take to the water for scenic views of the old town.

Rome: It's actually a pain to get to Rome from the cruise port of Civitavecchia by bus or train, but it's worth it to experience the Eternal City firsthand. Tour the Vatican and Sistine Chapel at St. Peter's Cathedral, step back in time at the Colosseum and Roman Forum, climb the Spanish Steps, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain and meander through the Borghese Gardens. When your feet give out, take a breather with a gelato or plate of pasta.

Rhodes, Greece: The historic port of Rhodes no longer has a Colossus, but that doesn't take away its appeal. Ensconced by ancient stone walls, Old Town is easily walkable, composed of cobblestone streets lined with restaurants and stores housed in structures dating back to the 14th century. If shopping isn't your thing, keep walking until you reach the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, where you can take a tour, or venture out to one of the city's beaches.

Naples, Italy: Naples is one of our favorite ports because you have so many options of what to do there. It's the jumping-off point for tours to Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Or, if you want to explore the city on your own, perhaps sitting down to a lunch of the region's famous pizza, it's a quick walk right into town from your cruise ship.

Ashdod, Israel : Most cruisers don't stick around Ashdod; it makes our list of best Mediterranean cruise ports because it's the gateway to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Tel Aviv and the Dead Sea. Prepare to be amazed by the sites you will see, but also be ready for long bus rides and long days off the ship touring.

Istanbul: Istanbul is the vibrant city you might not know you need to visit. Serving as both a departure port and port of call on Mediterranean cruises, the city offers something for everything: the cultural icons of the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, intense shopping experiences at the Grand Bazaar, Byzantine palaces, traditional Turkish baths (called hammams), flavorful cuisine, Bosporus day cruises between Europe and Asia, and plenty of neighborhoods to explore.

When to book a Mediterranean cruise

It's a good idea to book your Mediterranean cruise early, even nine to 12 months in advance. You can take advantage of early booking discounts and promotions and have the widest selection of available cabins and suites and dining times (if applicable). An early booking is ideal if you're planning on using miles to book your flights or points for a pre-cruise hotel. Look for fall sales when the current Mediterranean season is winding down.

Another smart time to book a Mediterranean cruise is during January or February when cruise lines run their " wave season " sales, often with lots of extra freebies thrown into the cost of the sailing. You might find last-minute deals on spring cruises to Europe or still be considered early for fall itineraries.

What to bring on a Mediterranean cruise

The Mediterranean region has a temperate climate, but it still gets chilly in the spring and fall and can be brutally hot in the summer. Check the weather before your sail date and pack for the predicted temperatures — with layers, in case the forecasters are wrong and it's unseasonably hot or cold.

You'll likely do a good deal of walking on a Mediterranean cruise, so a good pair of walking shoes is a must. Bonus if you can find cute options you can wear on sea days or sneakers that can do double duty in the ship's gym.

If your tours take you to religious sites, especially in Israel and Egypt, you might need a modest outfit that covers shoulders, arms and knees. Ladies, a shawl is a versatile option you can toss over your shoulders (or hair if need be), use for warmth with your strappy formal night attire or as a blanket on the airplane.

Of course, North Americans taking Mediterranean cruise vacations will need a passport to fly to and from their ship's departure and arrival ports.

Bottom line

The Mediterranean is an amazing region to cruise, and a sailing there is a wonderful introduction to Europe for travelers who have never been. The varied choices of itineraries, cruise lines and ships can be intimidating, but rest assured, you can't really go wrong with any of them. Just know that once you go, you may feel a need to return — either to see a port you loved more in-depth on a land vacation or to sail to the Mediterranean countries you missed on your first go-round.

How Long Do Mediterranean Cruises Typically Last?

  • The Mediterranean
  • October 18, 2023

week long cruise mediterranean

So you’re dreaming of a Mediterranean cruise, huh? Well, before you embark on this exciting adventure, it’s essential to know just how long these cruises typically last. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser or a first-timer, this brief article will give you the lowdown on the average duration of Mediterranean cruises, allowing you to plan your trip with ease and anticipation. So, buckle up, grab a pen, and let’s set sail into the world of Mediterranean cruises and their enchanting timeframes.

Table of Contents

Mediterranean Cruises: An Overview

If you’re considering a Mediterranean cruise, you’re in for a treat. Navigating the azure waters of the Mediterranean Sea while exploring various picturesque destinations is a dream come true. But before you embark on this adventure, it’s important to understand the factors that can affect the duration of your cruise and the different types of cruises available.

Definition of a Mediterranean Cruise

A Mediterranean cruise is a voyage that takes you through the Mediterranean Sea, visiting various ports and destinations along the way. This region is known for its rich history, beautiful coastlines, and vibrant cultures, making it a popular choice for travelers looking to experience the best of Europe and beyond.

Popular Cruise Routes

There are several popular cruise routes in the Mediterranean, each offering a unique experience. Some of the most common routes include:

  • Western Mediterranean: This route typically includes stops in Spain, Italy, France, and sometimes Portugal or Morocco.
  • Eastern Mediterranean: This route often includes Greece, Turkey, and Croatia, among other countries in the eastern part of the Mediterranean.
  • Southern Mediterranean: This route may include ports in Italy, Montenegro, Tunisia, and Malta, offering a combination of history, culture, and stunning landscapes.
  • Canary Islands: Cruises to the Canary Islands often depart from Spain and explore the beautiful islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote.
  • Greek Isles: This route is a favorite among those who want to explore the captivating islands of Greece, including Santorini, Mykonos, and Rhodes.

Factors Affecting Cruise Durations

Several factors can influence the duration of your Mediterranean cruise. Understanding these factors will help you plan and choose the cruise that best suits your preferences and travel goals.

Type of Mediterranean Cruise

The type of cruise you choose can significantly impact the length of your trip. Mediterranean cruises can be classified into various categories, including:

  • Sightseeing Cruises: These cruises focus on exploring the most iconic tourist attractions and landmarks of the Mediterranean region.
  • Island-Hopping Cruises: If you’re looking to experience the beauty and charm of multiple islands, an island-hopping cruise is ideal.
  • Cultural and Historical Cruises: For history buffs, cultural and historical cruises offer a deep dive into the region’s rich heritage and ancient sites.
  • Luxury and Boutique Cruises: These cruises provide a high-end experience with personalized services, gourmet dining, and luxurious accommodations.
  • Adventure and Active Cruises: If you’re seeking adventure and adrenaline, consider a cruise that offers activities like snorkeling, hiking, and water sports.

Destination and Port Stops

The number and duration of port stops during your cruise will affect the overall duration of your trip. Some itineraries may have a larger number of port stops, allowing you to explore multiple destinations in a shorter time, while others may have fewer stops but longer durations in each port.

Cruise Line Preferences

Different cruise lines offer varying durations for their Mediterranean cruises. Some may specialize in shorter trips, while others may offer extended voyages. It’s essential to research and compare different cruise lines to find the one that aligns with your desired duration.

Time of Year

The time of year you choose to embark on your Mediterranean cruise can also impact its duration. During the peak summer season, when the weather is ideal and the demand is high, cruises tend to be shorter to accommodate more travelers. In contrast, during the off-peak season, longer cruises may be available.

Standard Duration

While the duration of Mediterranean cruises can vary greatly, there are specific standard durations that you can expect when planning your trip.

Typical Duration of Mediterranean Cruises

On average, Mediterranean cruises tend to range from 7 to 14 nights. However, shorter and longer cruises are also available to cater to different travel preferences.

Short Cruises (3-5 Days)

If you’re short on time or looking for a quick getaway, there are Mediterranean cruises that last between 3 to 5 days. These cruises often focus on specific regions or prioritize sightseeing at the most popular ports.

Week-Long Cruises

A week-long Mediterranean cruise is a popular choice for many travelers. These cruises offer a balance between exploring multiple destinations and having leisurely days at sea. You can expect to visit several ports and experience the highlights of the region.

Extended Cruises (10+ Days)

For those looking for a more immersive experience, extended Mediterranean cruises lasting 10 days or more are available. These cruises allow for in-depth exploration of multiple countries and ports, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the Mediterranean’s diversity.

Different Cruise Types

Mediterranean cruises come in various types, each catering to specific interests and preferences. Here are some popular cruise types you can consider:

Sightseeing Cruises

Sightseeing cruises focus on visiting the most iconic tourist attractions and landmarks in the Mediterranean. From the grandeur of the Colosseum in Rome to the ancient ruins of Athens, these cruises offer a comprehensive glimpse into the region’s treasures.

Island-Hopping Cruises

For those seeking to explore the breathtaking beauty of Mediterranean islands, an island-hopping cruise is perfect. These cruises allow you to immerse yourself in the unique culture and landscapes of the various islands, from Santorini’s white-washed buildings to the vibrant nightlife of Ibiza.

Cultural and Historical Cruises

Cultural and historical cruises delve into the rich heritage and ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean. From visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites to exploring archaeological wonders like Pompeii, these cruises are perfect for history enthusiasts.

Luxury and Boutique Cruises

If you’re looking for a more exclusive and upscale experience, luxury and boutique cruises in the Mediterranean offer exceptional service, gourmet dining, and luxurious accommodations. These cruises often visit less crowded ports, providing a more refined and intimate atmosphere.

Adventure and Active Cruises

For the adventurous souls who crave excitement, adventure and active cruises are an excellent choice. These cruises offer opportunities for snorkeling, diving, hiking, and other thrilling activities, allowing you to experience the Mediterranean from an entirely different perspective.

Destination-Specific Duration

The duration of your Mediterranean cruise can also be influenced by the specific destinations you plan to visit. Here’s a breakdown of the average durations for some popular Mediterranean regions:

Western Mediterranean

Cruises in the Western Mediterranean typically last around 7 to 10 days. This region offers a mix of vibrant cities like Barcelona and Rome, as well as scenic coastal towns like the Amalfi Coast and the French Riviera.

Eastern Mediterranean

Eastern Mediterranean cruises usually have a duration of 7 to 12 days. This longer duration allows for visits to historical gems like Athens and Ephesus, as well as picturesque islands like Santorini and Rhodes.

Southern Mediterranean

Cruises in the southern part of the Mediterranean can last anywhere from 7 to 14 days. This region offers a blend of rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant cultures, with destinations like Malta, Tunisia, and Sicily.

Canary Islands

When cruising to the Canary Islands, the average duration is around 10 to 14 days. These cruises often depart from Spain and explore the diverse islands, offering a mix of beautiful beaches, volcanic landscapes, and unique flora and fauna.

Greek Isles

A Greek Isles cruise typically lasts around 7 to 10 days. This duration allows for visits to iconic Greek islands like Mykonos, Santorini, and Crete, immersing you in the picturesque beauty and ancient history of the region.

Different cruise lines cater to different demographics and preferences. Here are a few categories of cruise lines you can consider:

Family-Oriented Cruise Lines

If you’re traveling with children, family-oriented cruise lines provide a range of activities and amenities to keep kids entertained. These cruise lines often offer shorter durations to accommodate families with limited vacation time.

Luxury Cruise Lines

For those seeking a high-end and indulgent experience, luxury cruise lines are the way to go. These cruise lines offer longer durations with impeccable service, gourmet dining options, and elegant accommodations.

Budget Cruise Lines

If you’re on a tighter budget, there are several cruise lines that offer more affordable options. These cruise lines often have shorter durations and provide value for money, allowing you to explore the Mediterranean without breaking the bank.

Peak Holiday Seasons

The time of year you choose for your Mediterranean cruise can impact the duration of your trip. Here are a few peak holiday seasons to consider:

Summer Cruises

Summer is the peak season for Mediterranean cruises, with many travelers seeking the best weather and longer days. During this time, cruises tend to be shorter, ranging from 7 to 10 days, to accommodate the high demand.

Spring Break Cruises

Spring break is another popular time for Mediterranean cruises, especially for families and college students. These cruises often have durations of around 7 to 9 days, allowing for a break from work or school without taking up too much vacation time.

Christmas and New Year Cruises

If you’re looking for a unique way to celebrate the holiday season, Christmas and New Year cruises offer a festive experience. These cruises typically last around 7 to 14 days, providing a memorable way to ring in the new year.

Booking and Planning Tips

When it comes to planning your Mediterranean cruise, here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Finding Cruise Deals

To find the best deals for your Mediterranean cruise, consider booking during the off-peak season or taking advantage of early bird promotions. Research different cruise lines, compare prices, and consider working with a travel agent who specializes in cruises to get the best possible deals.

Early vs. Last-Minute Bookings

Booking your Mediterranean cruise early gives you more options and allows you to secure your preferred cabin location. However, last-minute bookings can sometimes offer significant discounts if you have a flexible schedule and can quickly make travel arrangements.

Considering Port Locations

When planning your Mediterranean cruise, consider the proximity of the embarkation and disembarkation ports to your desired destinations. Opting for a cruise that departs from or returns to a port near your desired starting or ending point can help save time and simplify your travel logistics.

Understanding Itineraries

Understanding the different aspects of a Mediterranean cruise itinerary will help you make the most of your experience. Here are a few key points:

Embarkation and Disembarkation Days

Embarkation and disembarkation days are the days when you board and leave the cruise ship. These days are typically considered as half days, as you may have limited time on the ship due to check-in and check-out procedures. It’s important to consider these days when planning your activities.

Port Stops and Excursions

Port stops are the highlights of your Mediterranean cruise, as these are the moments when you get to explore different destinations. Be sure to research and plan your excursions in advance, considering the duration of each port stop and the activities you want to prioritize.

Sea days refer to the days when you’re sailing on the open sea without any port stops. These days allow you to relax and enjoy the amenities and activities on board the ship. It’s essential to consider the number of sea days in your itinerary and whether you prefer more port stops or more leisurely days at sea.

Mediterranean cruises offer the perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the iconic landmarks to the charming island towns, there’s something for everyone in this stunning region. By understanding the factors that affect cruise durations, the different cruise types available, and considering your preferences and budget, you can plan a Mediterranean cruise that suits your interests and ensures a memorable experience. So grab your sun hat and embark on a cruise that will take you on a journey through the wonders of the Mediterranean.

Pam LeBlanc spent a week on small Windstar cruise in March. Here, the Star Legend docks in Nice, France. Pam LeBlanc photo

Count me out for big ship cruises. Spending time with 3,000 other people on a boat for a week sounds like getting locked in a shopping mall and pushed out to sea. But small boats? I’m a convert. Especially if you travel during the off season, like I did, when I booked a week-long Windstar cruise along the Mediterranean coast.

Our ship, the 300-passenger Star Legend, was about half full. We departed from Civitavecchia, on the outskirts of Rome, and sailed to Barcelona, making stops in Livorno, Italy; Nice, France; and Marseille, France.

Here are my 10 favorite moments…

Windstar cruise

A crowd forms around Michelangelo’s statue of David in Florence, Italy. Pam LeBlanc photo

  • Seeing Michelangelo’s sculpture, David. I had no idea that walking around a corner and seeing that 17-foot sculpted body would affect me the way it did. He’s beautiful. Florence is just an hour’s drive from Livorno, Italy, so we booked an “on your own” excursion to the art-filled city on a bus with other ship passengers. (You can save money by hopping a train on your own.) We didn’t have reservations but had no trouble getting a ticket to the Accademia Gallery, where the statue is located, the same day. (Don’t try this in the summer; book online in advance.)

Windstar cruise

Pam LeBlanc perches on the edge of the promenade in Nice, France, during a Windstar cruise to the Mediterranean. Chris LeBlanc photo

2. Strolling the promenade in Nice, France. This wide pedestrian walkway hugs the stone-covered beach, and it’s the best place along the Mediterranean to people watch. You’ll see cyclists, strollers, lovers, runners and more all taking in the ocean views or stopping for a drink at one of the adjacent bars. We took a dip in the ocean, which was chilly in March. And that stony beach is not for people with sensitive toes!

3. Taking in a flamenco show in Barcelona. The historic Palau de la Musica Catalana, with its ornate balconies and elaborate central skylight, makes the perfect setting for a performance of Spain’s traditional, foot stomping dance. It made me want to don a tight, ruffly dress and stamp the night away.

Windstar cruise

Customers inspect the sea urchins at the market in Barcelona. Pam LeBlanc photo

4. Wandering the market in Barcelona. You can find anything from fresh scorpionfish to empanadas and skewers holding a spiral of fried potatoes at the Mercat de la Boqueria, on Las Ramblas in Barcelona. Gird your loins – it’s crowded, noisy and tons of fun. We sampled raw sea urchin and oysters, sipped wine, and sampled bruschetta and ceviche.

5. Visiting the Picasso Museum in Barcelona. When I think of Picasso, I think of portraits of people with their facial features rearranged. The museum has some of that, but it’s heavy on Picasso’s early stuff, which is much more realistic. In all, it holds more than 4,000 works, and it’s all displayed in a series of interconnected historic buildings.

Windstar cruise

Chris LeBlanc explores the narrow streets of Nice, France. Pam LeBlanc photo

6. Wandering the narrow streets of Nice. Get out and ramble, without a plan or agenda. You’ll stumble into the most wonderful places.

7. Sampling the gelato. I aimed for two servings a day, and sampled an array of flavors, from Fior di crema (sweet cream) to coconut. Yum.

8. Learning about cave paintings at the Cosquer Cave museum in Marseille. In 1985, a diver discovered paintings in a partially submerged cave 120 feet underneath the surface of the ocean. Tourists can’t get to that site, which is slowly filling with more water, but they can ride a cart through a replica of the cave at Cosquer Mediterranee, which opened in 2022. Most surprising? The cave paintings include depictions of penguins.

9. Climbing Castle Hill in Nice. After chugging up a few hundred steps, you can take in views of the beachfront promenade far below, the harbor, and a sea of red tiled rooftops. You’ll also find the ruins of an ancient castle and a man-made waterfall.

Windstar cruise

Chris LeBlanc enjoys a dip in the hot tub aboard the Star Legend. Pam LeBlanc photo

10. Soaking in the hot tub on the bow of the Star Legend, our cruise ship, while we were docked in the harbor at Nice. Nobody else seemed to know about the tub, which we had to ourselves as we sipped adult beverages and watched passing sailboats.

  • Ten best things about a Mediterranean cruise in March

by Pam LeBlanc | Mar 29, 2024

Mediterranean cruise

The Star Legend, a Windstar cruise ship, docks in Nice, France. Pam LeBlanc photo

Count me out for big ship cruises. Spending time with 3,000 other people on a boat for a week sounds like getting locked in a shopping mall and pushed out to sea. But small boats? I’m a convert. Especially if you travel during the off season, like I did, when I booked a week-long Mediterranean cruise with Windstar.

Our ship, the 300-passenger Star Legend, was about half full. We departed from Civitavecchia, on the outskirts of Rome, and sailed to Barcelona, making stops in Livorno, Italy; Nice, France; and Marseille, France.

A crowd forms around Michelangelo’s sculpture David in Florence. Pam LeBlanc photo

Here are my 10 favorite moments…

  • Seeing Michelangelo’s sculpture, David. I had no idea that walking around a corner and seeing that 17-foot sculpted body would affect me the way it did. He’s beautiful. Florence is just an hour’s drive from Livorno, Italy, so we booked an “on your own” excursion to the art-filled city on a bus with other ship passengers. (You can save money by hopping a train on your own.) We didn’t have reservations but had no trouble getting a ticket to the Accademia Gallery, where the statue is located, the same day. (Don’t try this in the summer; book online in advance.)

Chris LeBlanc strolls the narrow streets of Nice, France. Pam LeBlanc photo

6. Roaming the narrow streets of Nice.

10. Soaking in the hot tub on the bow of the Star Legend, our cruise ship, while we were docked in the harbor at Nice. Nobody else seemed to know about the tub, which we had to ourselves as we sipped adult beverages and watched passing sailboats.

We had an amazing sailing crew! Each member was very helpful with our trip and contributed to our amazing experience. Our tour guide, Ivan, keep the team organized and out of trouble. He coordinated all of tour times and kept us updated. We had such a large group but he was able to up with us all at all times! I miss this crew. If you are thinking about taking this trip but on the fence I would highly recommend Ivan and this particular sailboat crew with Viktorja!

Spent most of the day out on the water and afternoon/nights exploring different greek islands. We had the most amazing skippers (George and Orestis). They mad the trip so fun and we’re full of information about Greece and the history. Definitely recommend this trip! Best skippers ever!

CROATIA SAIL - Split to Split (The Dalmatian Voyager) Tour

CROATIA SAIL - Split to Split (The Dalmatian Voyager)

This was a great tour and a great tour company! I really enjoyed the sailing aspect of traveling, this ship was not small so you did not always feel the waves. I liked that you did not have to wake up and pack a suitcase to end up in a new city. The rooms were a decent size, only complaint was I was in a lower cabin and the bathroom smelt of vinegar and the shower did not drain properly but they are minor issues and did not ruin my trip. I loved that the tour had days of optional party aspects with chill days. All of the optional add on activities were well worth it and very fun. Lucas was a great tour manager and always made sure you were having a good time. All the crew on the boat were very friendly.

Croatian islands cruise + Land tour with Plitvice - from Zagreb

Our ship was changed three times in our printed itinerary, we ended up with which we were extremely pleased with. Every member of the crew was excellent. Our problems did not lie with the cruise. We were told we were going to be picked up at the airport in Zagreb but no one came. I, (Carol Loree Baker) walked up and down the arrival area asking if any of the people there were to pick us up. The information desk at the airport called Tour Radar for us. We were told it be another one and half hours or to take a cab and the would reimburse us. We took the cab, as we had been flying for many, many hours from Canada. Vivienne Welters paid for the cab for the four of us and as of today, she has still not been reimbursed. We were informed that Hotel Dubrovonick was the hotel where our holiday was to begin. We came into Zagreb two days early and booked into that hotel for the two nights prior to starting our tour. After two nights we got a message that we were not booked in Hotel Dubrovonick, but instead were to go to Palace Hotel and that they would send a driver to move the four of us (The Bakers and the Welters) and our luggage to that hotel. After waiting 45 minutes past the time our driver was to arrive, we walked with our luggage to Palace Hotel.ake The tour in Zagreb, The Plitvice Lakes National Parks, The Dubrovonick tour, the cruise were all wonderful We have been telling people to go to Croatia and take a cruise with the Katarina Line. Our problems were more with Tour Radar. Marko had arranged for us to get free transportation from Dubrovonick to Montenegro, only to be told later that we would have to pay for this. Vivienne Welters sent copies of the email where Marko had arranged this. Eventually, with the help of Roko, we were taken to Montenegro, free as Marko had told us. We had the most wonderful holiday, but with the changes that kept popping up, it was very frustrating and stressful.

We just arrived home from our 7 day sailing trip with 16 of our closest friends and family. I can't say enough good things about Alexandra, her husband, the crew, or the rest of the DM yachting staff. Our trip was magical to say the least. The included breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals were delicious and the drinks we purchased from the bar were well priced. The alcohol we purchased on the boat was less expensive when compared to any of the port restaurants by a significant margin. Also, I'd like to especially highlight the professionalism of Alexandra and her husband who personally helped us and went above and beyond to make sure we were accommodated through a surprise incident where we needed temporarily evacuate the boat. They organized for us to stay at a very nice resort, treated us to meals at that hotel, and kept us informed throughout the process.. While we enjoyed the unplanned visit to this resort, we were happy to return to the boat and continue our adventure through Montenegro. My wife and I hope to book with them again knowing that no matter what unplanned event may possibly happen, they will work to ensure you have a beautiful vacation. Thank you so much!

Pearls of Adriatic Deluxe cruise Tour

Pearls of Adriatic Deluxe cruise

The tour itself was very good, the crew was friendly, the ship very satisfactory, the food OK (tended to be over-cooked). The biggest drawback was that there were a large number of "smokers" on the tour, perhaps 30-40% of the passengers. Unfortunately, there was no smoking prohibition in the aft lounge, which was enclosed for several days due to windy/rainy weather. Also, the crew members took their smoke-breaks there.. It made for a very unpleasant situation. I strongly recommend that this issue be addressed for the health and enjoyment of your future passengers. Are there non-smoking tours? Perhaps, a smoking area can be designated for the benefit of all. Thanks. MIchael

What people love about sailing tours in mediterranean.

Amazing trip, tour guide Dom was sensational, did a very good job at showing us all the landmarks and being an all round good host.
Excellent tour, great skipper, Marios and great group participation. Though travelling alone, I never felt left out. Our skipper / guide did everything to make the tour a joy !
Loved this sailing adventure and plan to do another one in the near future. The Captain Marius was excellent with a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of sailing and taking care of his passengers. Our group gelled well and we all had fun swimming, eating on board and going out to dinner and playing cards. I would definitely do this adventure again

29 Top Mediterranean Cruise Packing List Items in 2023 + What to Wear & NOT to Bring

29 Top Mediterranean Cruise Packing List Items in 2023 + What to Wear & NOT to Bring

The Mediterranean is filled with endless treasures to explore. From the fascinating history of Greece to the rich culture of Turkey, your Mediterranean cruise is sure to take you on the adventure of a lifetime.

Our Mediterranean cruise took us through Greece, Italy, Spain, and more, but this route has several different points of disembarkation, which means it can stop anywhere from Montenegro to Morocco!

Since it can be daunting to pack for such a varietal itinerary, take a look at our comprehensive Mediterranean Cruise Packing List, which will also touch on what to wear on a Mediterranean cruise , what NOT to bring, and other useful FAQs.

Asher and Lyric in Italy

What to Pack for a Mediterranean Cruise - 29 Essentials

1. neck wallet.

Avoid becoming a target for pickpockets and petty theft, especially in the crowded, touristy areas like cruise ports and busy streets. Europe is the land of professional sticky fingers and they are sly! When you disembark to explore each new city, you’ll want to be sure your valuables are safe so don’t forget to bring your neck wallet. This one is large enough to hold your phone, passport, credit card, and cash while also keeping you organized with separate pockets. Wear it under your shirt through airports and busy attractions to ensure no one can even spot your valuables.

2. Lipstick-Sized Portable Charger

With so many things to explore and so many new people to meet, you won’t want to waste time waiting for your phone to charge. Bring a handy lipstick-sized portable charger so you can charge your smartphone on the fly. This will free you up to use your phone for pictures and navigation without having to worry about it running out of battery.

Lipstick-Sized Charger

3. Virtual Private Network (VPN)

A VPN will be invaluable to have on a Mediterranean cruise. Protect your personal information and passwords from potential hackers when you connect to public WiFi both on the ship and in cafes and restaurants in the cities you dock in. A VPN will also allow you to connect to websites from your home country that you may not be able to access in the destinations you’re visiting.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

4. International Power Adapter

An international power adapter is a must-have on any trip overseas. Particularly on a cruise where you plan to visit various countries, you’ll want to be prepared to plug in your necessary electronics wherever you are. This one is great because it will work in 100+ popular countries and comes with a lifetime replacement guarantee!

International Power Adapter

5. Waterproof Phone Case

Everybody knows that electronic gadgets and water simply don’t mix. Packing a reliable waterproof phone case will keep your selfie game strong, even when you’re in the pool or at the beach during your Mediterranean cruise. This waterproof phone case will work wonders for keeping your smartphone secure and putting your mind at ease. It’s made with love by a woman-owned company based in Hawaii, and for a small price, could save your lifeline!

6. Travel Insurance for Cruising

Any time you travel overseas, it’s important to make sure you’re covered in case of an emergency. Your at-home provider typically only provides domestic coverage (and international medical bills would cost a fortune!) If they have to medivac you off the ship, that alone could cost tens of thousands, and that’s before receiving treatment!

Faye is our go-to provider because they will take care of the costs for lost luggage, stolen items, flight delays, medical costs, and even an entire trip cancelation. They also make claims a breeze through their easy-to-use mobile app and we’ve been reimbursed the same day. In some countries, it is actually required to have insurance when traveling abroad, so don’t gamble with your coverage.

7. Motion Sickness Patches

Motion sickness prevention is wise if you suffer from any kind of seasickness or nausea from windy European roads. While the cruise ship has large stabilizers, you’ll probably still feel some movement on the first couple of days, as well as on smaller vessels that take you to ports or around the coastline for excursions. You’ll be thankful for bringing these effective patches!

Motion Sickness Patches

8. Hanging Toiletry Bag

If you’ve been on a cruise – you already know… the bathrooms average about 25 square feet, and you can barely do a spin in the shower! Let alone have countertop space for all of your toiletries. This hanging toiletry bag elegantly resolves that issue by vertically optimizing your liquids with 4 giant unfolding pockets for all haircare, skincare, and makeup, plus 3 external pockets for smaller items.

It creates a shelf that you can access at eye-level by hanging on any door, shower pole, hook, or wall. It’s a WAY better system than carelessly throwing products around your cabin, or waiting for bottles to fall off the counter when waves really start to rock the boat! Once you’re ready to pack it away, all you do is fold it back up and go. It’s an absolute gem and we’d never cruise without it!

hanging toiletry bag

9. Quick-Dry Travel Towel

The cruise ship will provide big fluffy towels, but you don’t want to hike around the Greek Islands or explore slick waterfalls with something bulky. This lightweight travel towel is light as a feather yet super absorbent, it actually dries 10x faster than typical cotton towels. We’ve found it has infinite uses like drying off or serving as a seat cover, packing cushion, shawl, changing curtain, and more.

Quick-Dry Travel Towel

10. Swimsuits

Pack your most stylish swimsuits and get ready to let loose on the dreamy beaches of Portugal and the sunny coves of coastal Croatia. Thong-style bottoms are totally acceptable, and no sweat if you forget your bikini top as many beaches are topless. For men, less is more. Speedos or shorter swim trunks are good options to help you fit in with the locals.

Swimsuits

11. Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are an essential item to bring on all sorts of trips, and your Mediterranean cruise is no exception! They keep you organized, and make packing and unpacking a piece of cake. These come in a set of three different sizes, several vibrant colors, and also include a laundry pouch and a shoe bag. They also have a place on the outside to label what’s inside each cube so you’ll never have to spend time digging through your luggage to find that one specific item.

12. Jet Lag Relief

You’re likely flying to the Mediterranean from a faraway starting point. This jet lag relief is the best one that I’ve found for fighting exhaustion and I can feel a distinct difference when traveling with this product versus without it. Between the layovers, long flights, and timezone changes – this product will make the journey way easier, especially since it uses chamomile and other botanicals rather than harsh stimulants like caffeine.

jet lag relief

13. Windproof Travel Umbrella

You should always bring an umbrella to this region, particularly if you plan to travel during the winter when the local temperatures are mild but the climate is rainy. You’ll want a windproof travel umbrella like this one to keep you dry and comfortable while you explore each new city. If you’re cruising in the summer, you may still experience the occasional rain shower but it is less likely than in the colder months.

Windproof Travel Umbrella

14. Discounted Tickets on Mediterranean Tours

Whether you’re biking around the shores of Marseille or cruising around the coast of Valencia , there are endless possibilities for your daily port excursions. Get Your Guide is our favorite booking service for the best local tours with flexible cancellations.

Walk through Old Town Dubrovnik , visit the Acropolis in Athens , and dine on pizza (where it was invented!) in Naples before exploring the breathtaking cliffs of the Amalfi Coast .

15. Rolling Suitcase

It’s a good idea to bring a reliable piece of luggage when you’re going on a cruise in order to keep your belongings safe and contained. A hardshell suitcase will protect your belongings during your journey. This suitcase is perfect for stowing away in your cabin and is spacious enough to fit the variety of clothing you’ll want during your cruise. The rolling mechanism will be a lifesaver against any uphill journeys you’re embarking on.

16. TSA-Approved Luggage Locks

Your bags will be out of sight for LONG durations – between checking them for an international flight, then handing them off to the cruise line upon your arrival (where they place your bags at your cabin to prevent hallway congestion) as well as leaving your bags in the hallway at the end of your cruise for drop-off. Secure your luggage with these TSA-approved locks for peace of mind when your bags are on their own. I use them on purses, lockers, suitcases, etc., and bring 2 sets per trip.

17. Packable “Just in Case” Bag

One of the best parts of any vacation is shopping for local goods. You know there’s always less room than when you departed, so bring a packable “just in case” bag for authentic treats like olive oil, spices, handmade art, leather goods, and perfect gifts for your loved ones. For any bottled products like perfumes, wine, liquor, and other glass things, use these Wine Wings packing cushions so they can endure being thrown around a little by airport and cruise staff.

18. Swimsuit Cover-up

A cover-up or sarong is the perfect wrap for moving between turquoise beaches, coastal cafes, grocery stores, and your cruise ship. Some restaurants (onboard and in-town) won’t allow you to eat in just your swimsuit, so a cover-up and shoes will be required. This one is very casual and beautiful, my wife gets tons of compliments on it every time she wears it!

Swimsuit Cover-up

19. Sun Hat

Most days on your cruise will be spent sightseeing in picture-perfect ports or sunning on the ship decks. Bring a sun hat to keep the sun out of your eyes, protect your skin, and take your Instagram selfies to the next level.

Sun Hat

20. Cooling Towels

When we were in Corsica on our Mediterranean Cruise, sliding down waterfalls all the way to the bottom of the mountain – I regretted not bringing this cooling towel with us for the rigorous hike! For any warm or tropical destinations, this towel will be your new best friend. Simply add water and wring it out. It will drop to 20 degrees colder than the outside temp for an hour! Then just add more water when you need more chilly relief, boom!

Cooling Towels

21. Sandals

Sandals or flip-flops are a must-have for a Middle Sea getaway. Bring some that are easy to slip on and off for a day at the pool on deck or at the beach. We like these Birkenstocks because they go with any outfit, and are comfortable to wear for a day of sightseeing. Also, consider a pair of mesh, breathable water shoes for when you’re going between land and sea.

men's sandals

22. Filtered Water Bottle

You will have filtered water onboard but the same can’t be said about your on-shore excursions. Have autonomy over your water with this filtered water bottle that will help you reduce plastic waste instead of spending a fortune on water in town. It noticeably makes your water taste better and will be perfect for areas in this part of the world where you can fill up at public spouts and water fountains.

Filtered Water Bottle

23. Light Jacket

It can get chilly and very windy on the boat at nighttime, especially on the top deck, so make sure to bring a light jacket with you. This jacket is perfect for layering, particularly if you’re cruising during the colder months. It’ll keep you warm and is great to tie around your waist to spice up your outfit.

Light Jacket

24. Travel Clothesline

You’ll end up with lots of soggy clothes, wet towels, and swimsuits from soaking in the hot tub every day of your cruise. This clothesline is a godsend since it can be used inside or outside. On cruises, we string this across our balcony to dry outdoor items or across the bathroom shower to create a convenient drying station. This set is fantastic because it comes with its own clothespins and is super lightweight for travel.

Travel Clothesline

25. Walking or Hiking Shoes

If you’re not wandering around the streets of Nice, getting lost in Barcelona, or piazza-hopping in Florence, you’re not doing your Mediterranean cruise right. Walking shoes are an absolute necessity! These are ideal for navigating the cobblestoned streets and uneven terrain of many European cities and spending the day on your feet.

Walking or Hiking Shoes

26. Sunscreen

The Mediterranean sun can be surprisingly harsh. With many of your vacation days inevitably spent in the outdoors, you’ll want to be sure to pack sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 to avoid a nasty sunburn. Apply it every few hours to keep from burning. Also consider bringing a small container of aloe vera for post-sun care. This brand is reef-safe which is mandatory in many areas with protected marine life.

Sunscreen

27. Hangover Prevention

The unlimited booze cruise package is available for a reason – people want to enjoy a mimosa at breakfast, a daiquiri at the pool, a glass of wine with dinner, and end the night at the dance club for a shot WITHOUT having to pay one-by-one for each drink. This hangover prevention will keep you from getting overly dehydrated on those hot Mediterranean days. Even if you only have one or two drinks a day, all of the activity and sun can be draining. This supplement detoxes alcohol from your body more quickly so you will feel energized and ready for adventure!

Hangover Prevention

28. Gorgeous Outfit

Be sure to bring at least one trendy outfit on your Mediterranean cruise. You’ll want to look nice for evenings out both on the ship and in the stylish European cities you’ll be perusing. This jumpsuit is stellar because it looks great on many different body types, doesn’t wrinkle easily, and is relatively inexpensive. It’s a power look!

Gorgeous Outfit

29. Magnetic Hooks

Did you know that most ship doors have steel inside, making them magnetic? We pack these for all of our cruises because storage is difficult to come by in most suites, especially the interiors – so these hooks are perfect for hanging hats, clothes, towels, or anything you want to get off the floor. Sometimes we also use the door as a vacation bulletin board for our itinerary, onboard events, classes, restaurant bookings, and special invites!

Magnetic Hooks

Don’t forget these other items for a Mediterranean vacation:

What to Wear on a Mediterranean Cruise

On your Mediterranean cruise, you’ll want to pack a variety of clothing. For days spent on the ship, think breezy sundresses, coverups, shorts and t-shirts. On days when you disembark in European port cities, you’ll want some casual but cute clothes to explore in, like a romper and comfortable sneakers, and maybe a few nicer outfits as well.

couple in greece

From the sun soaked beaches of the Amalfi Coast to the lively nightclubs in Palma Majorca, a few different outfits are in order for your Mediterranean cruise. European fashion is wide and varying, but in general you should try to look put-together. Minimal makeup, simple dresses, smart slacks and sensible sandals are great. It’s safe to say that thong bikinis and coverups are generally okay for this area of the world. Bring a few flashy tops or skirts for nights out on the town in some of the port cities, and a scarf or two to cover up if you’re visiting religious sites. Packing for the Seasons on a Mediterranean Cruise

The Mediterranean climate is typical of the northern hemisphere with four distinct seasons, and temperatures range from hot in the summer to mild in the winter. The most popular time to cruise the Mediterranean is during the summer when the weather is warm, though with that comes a heavy influx of tourists. Consider traveling during spring or fall to avoid the crowds, and be sure to pack plenty of clothing for layering to easily adapt to the weather.

SUMMER – June, July, August:

FALL – September, October, November:

Fall is an ideal season for a Mediterranean cruise, as the weather is mild and not too cold, which is perfect for doing plenty of walking around and sightseeing in each European port destination. You are likely to encounter less groups of tourists which will result in a more authentic experience and cruise prices may even be a bit lower, too. Be prepared with light jackets, scarves, jeans, and a raincoat.

WINTER – December, January, February, part of March:

woman wearing a hat

SPRING – March, April, May:

Spring is one of the best times to take a Mediterranean cruise. The weather will be pleasantly warm but not hot with plenty of bright, sunny days. If you visit during the spring, you will just miss the crowds of tourists swarming to the region, which is always a plus. Be prepared with plenty of lightweight clothing for layering so you can easily adapt to changing temperatures.

Pools and Beaches – You are sure to find several pools and hot tubs on your cruise ship, and you’ll definitely encounter lots of gorgeous beaches, too. Bring a couple of trendy swimsuits and coverups. Sun hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are must haves as well.

Ship Restaurants – Going to dinner on the ship is a great excuse to dress glamorously. Keep it classy with a little black dress, sundress, or nice jeans and a tank top. For men, chic slacks and button-downs are great options. These outfits will also come in handy for evenings out in the port cities.

Outdoor Activities – If you have any outdoor activities or tours planned during any of your cruise stops, make sure you pack accordingly. Bring comfortable walking or hiking shoes, and athletic attire.

What NOT to Bring on a Mediterranean Cruise

1. don’t bring firearms and ammunition.

Guns, ammunition, any kind of knives, swords, daggers, bullwhips or any other types of weapons are definitely not allowed on cruise ships, so leave them at home!

2. DON’T PACK homemade, pre-cooked or other perishable food items

Cruise companies want you to spend your money on the cruise ship. You can bring packaged snack food, but no homemade meals. You can usually make special requests ahead of time if you have dietary restrictions.

3. DON’T TAKE coolers

Normally, coolers are not allowed to be brought onboard. The only exception is for coolers that are needed to carry medications, baby food, or items related to dietary restrictions.

4. DON’T BRING alcohol or hard liquor

Depending on the cruise line, you may be able to bring sealed beer and wine, but oftentimes bringing any of your own alcohol on board is prohibited. That said, you will be able to buy alcohol on the ship.

FAQs About Traveling on a Mediterranean Cruise

1. what are the best cruise lines to take with kids.

woman and child on cruise

Royal Caribbean International, Costa Cruises, and MSC Cruises are well known cruise lines, and have excellent reviews from families traveling with kids. Do some research ahead of time if you have a particular cruise line in mind and read reviews from other cruisers regarding kid-friendliness. Be sure to check that your cruise isn’t “adults only” before you book!

2. What kind of adapter do I need to bring on my cruise?

Most cruise ships operate on 220 volt systems. That said, your cruise will be disembarking in various cities throughout Europe, so you’ll want to make sure you have a good  international power adapter  so you’re prepared in every location.

3. Do I need to get any vaccines before my trip?

mediterranean cruise ship

Regardless of your destinations, you should be up-to-date on routine vaccines like measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and seasonal flu. Crew members on the ship and fellow travelers often come from countries where these diseases are more common than in the United States, so get your shots just in case! Don’t forget to ask your healthcare provider whether any additional vaccines are required for your particular destination as well.

4. What are some good cruise ship reads?

Depending on what you like, we’ve found that juicy but light-hearted vacation reads are great options for a relaxing cruise, consider checking out this list for some ideas. We recommend bringing a Kindle on your cruise, as you will have endless reading material at your fingertips. Sometimes it’s nice to grab a guide book and read up on your destination before you get there, too!

Virgin Voyages is pitching a monthlong cruise to remote workers starting at $10K for two people

  • Richard Branson's Virgin Voyages says it's launching a monthlong  summertime cruise pass .
  • Passholders would get to sail on four consecutive weeklong Mediterranean itineraries.
  • The program, aimed at remote workers, starts at $9,990 for two people in one balcony cabin.

Insider Today

Richard Brandon's Virgin Voyages wants you to "WFH" this summer.

No, not home — "Helm," it said.

The adult-only cruise line says it's launching monthlong summertime passes, aptly known as the "Scarlet Summer Season Pass," starting at $9,990 for two people in one cabin.

Say goodbye to your desk and hello to destinations like Ibiza, Spain; Cannes, France; and Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy. With this pass, travelers would sail on four consecutive weeklong Mediterranean cruises.

Guests must pick from four preset embarkation dates, which all fall on the first or second week of June, July, August, and September.

During the month at sea, the Scarlet Lady would sail twice to nine ports in Spain, France, and Italy.

No more dingy desks: These remote workers get balcony cabins instead.

week long cruise mediterranean

Passholders would spend four weeks at sea in one of Scarlet Lady's mid-tier "Sea Terrace" cabins.

The Scarlet Lady is Virgin's first ship, joining the fleet in 2021.

But first doesn't mean the worst: The balcony stateroom has plush amenities like rainfall showerheads, electronic blinds, and bright red hammocks on the balcony.

Don't worry: WiFi and coffee are included.

Cruise ships aren't traditionally known for having fast or stable WiFi. But according to Virgin, there's no need to worry about laggy Zoom meetings: The ship's internet was recently upgraded, now serviced by SES and Starlink .

To fuel those days at work, travelers would also get daily credit for specialty coffee and tea, although the $10 would have to be split between the cabin's two occupants.

Virgin Voyages promises pass holders entry to the ship’s “members-only” sundeck.

And no need to pack heavy: The cost also includes laundry services.

No more overpriced lunch salads or hastily made sandwiches: The ship has over 20 restaurants.

The Scarlet Lady's dining venues are complimentary, save for some upcharged dishes and "dinner shows."

This includes a Korean barbecue venue and a trendy vegetable-forward restaurant.

Companies have increasingly been issuing return-to-office orders.

But a spokesperson for Virgin Voyages said this hasn't been waning cruisers' interest in the pass.

Quite the opposite: Virgin says it might have to expand the program.

week long cruise mediterranean

The cruise line had initially planned 40 passes (10 a month).

But "after seeing incredible demand," Virgin Voyages is now "considering" making more passes available, the spokesperson told Business Insider.

Italy’s got another leaning tower —and this one could actually fall over.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

They wanna Pisa the action.

There’s another leaning tower in Italy — but this time, officials are worried about a dangerous collapse.

The 12th-century catastrophe-in-waiting is the Torre Garisenda, standing tall at 148-foot on a four-degree bend — for now — at the heart of Bologna.

Torre Garisenda in Italy is titling at a dangerous rate, officials warn.

The locally beloved, long-standing icon was considered to be at “high risk” of tumbling down just last year, CNN reported .

The tilting troublemaker, now off-limits to onlookers, stands next to a larger, 319-foot structure called Asinelli Tower — together they are known as the two towers.

Earlier this week, city officials recruited scaffolding, pylons, and other equipment used on the Leaning Tower of Pisa to try and keep Torre Garisenda in the air, in a $20M initiative.

It will take half a year to modify the equipment for optimal use.

“This will make it possible to secure the tower,” Bologna mayor Matteo Lepore said at a press conference.

Work is being done to keep Torre Garisenda safely in the air.

A truncated description of the plan is to run supports across the mid-section of the tower that connect to two pulley systems anchored in the ground.

Work on its masonry will come after.

“In 2025 and 2026 there will be further consolidation and restoration work, which still needs to be planned,” the mayor added.

When built in the Middle Ages, the two towers served both a military purpose for signaling and city defense along with a flaunting of prestige, according to the city’s tourism board.

Baltimore cruises to reroute after bridge collapse pauses port traffic

Carnival, royal caribbean will move some operations to norfolk while baltimore recovers from key bridge collapse.

week long cruise mediterranean

Cruise lines are scrambling to make alternative plans and avoid the Port of Baltimore while officials suspend vessel traffic amid cleanup and rescue efforts around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.

Three major cruise lines sail from Baltimore, though no ships were in port Tuesday morning. The next cruise was scheduled to depart Sunday, but its operator confirmed late Tuesday afternoon that the voyage would instead head out from Norfolk.

Amira M. Hairston, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore port, said in an email that the status of the upcoming cruise ship schedule is not yet known.

“At this time we do not know how long vessel traffic will be suspended. As soon as that is determined we will provide an update. Until then please keep those involved in your prayers,” Hairston wrote.

Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas left Saturday for a 12-night southern Caribbean cruise with plans to return April 4. The cruise line said in a statement Tuesday that it was “closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

On Thursday, the cruise company said the current sailing would end in Norfolk.

“Our guests on board will be provided compensation and complimentary shuttle transportation as well as Wi-Fi and phone calls to adjust their travel arrangements,” Royal Caribbean said.

Upcoming cruises on April 4 and 12 will sail from Norfolk as well, and passengers will be compensated for the change. The ship was already scheduled for maintenance in the Bahamas after the April 12 cruise.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” the company said.

Carnival Legend set off Sunday for a seven-day Bahamas cruise; the ship was scheduled to return March 31 and depart for its next sailing the same day. Instead of coming back to Baltimore, Carnival said late Tuesday, it will end its trip in Norfolk, and free buses will bring passengers back to Baltimore.

The ship’s next seven-day cruise will leave Norfolk and return to the port. In a news release , Carnival said it would temporarily move Baltimore operations to Norfolk “while Key Bridge rescue and cleanup efforts continue.”

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

Carnival Pride is supposed to start sailing from Baltimore next month, mostly to the Bahamas and eastern Caribbean.

Norwegian Cruise Line does not have cruises scheduled out of the port until later this year. American Cruise Lines, a U.S. river cruise operator, has Chesapeake Bay trips on small vessels scheduled from Baltimore starting in May. The cruise line said it will monitor developments “and make adjustments if needed.”

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) said it was “deeply saddened” by the bridge collapse and was closely following the situation. “Right now, the most important thing to do is to allow the emergency workers to do their work,” the group wrote in a statement.

This year, 12 ships are scheduled to make a total of 115 calls at the Port of Baltimore, the industry association said. With room for roughly 2,000 or 2,100 passengers at double occupancy, most Baltimore-based ships are much smaller than the record-breaking behemoths that sail from Florida ports.

“Any adjustments to current cruise activity at the port will be announced as soon as available by the individual cruise lines,” CLIA said in its statement.

A news release issued last month by Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office said that more than 444,000 individuals cruised out of the Port of Baltimore last year, the most since 2012. The Maryland Port Administration said in a news release last year that the cruise industry generates nearly 400 jobs and $63 million in revenue every year for local businesses.

The port positions itself as a convenient option for cruising year-round, thanks to its location off Interstate 95 and plentiful parking. More than 40 million people live within a six-hour drive of the city, the port administration says.

Baltimore bridge collapse

Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship , sending at least eight people from a construction crew into the water. Follow live updates and see photos from the scene .

How it happened: The container ship lost power shortly before hitting the bridge, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore (D) said. Video shows the bridge collapse in under 40 seconds.

Victims: Divers recovered the bodies of two construction workers who died , while finding other vehicles trapped and probably containing the other victims, officials said. They were fathers, husbands and hard workers . The entire crew aboard the container ship Dali survived . First responders shut down most traffic on the four-lane bridge after the crew issued an urgent mayday call. It saved lives, Moore said.

Economic impact: The collapse of the bridge, which severed ocean links to the Port of Baltimore, adds a fresh headache to already struggling global supply chains . See how the collapse will disrupt the supply of cars, coal and other goods .

History: The Key Bridge was built in the 1970s and spanned the Patapsco River. Rebuilding the bridge will probably take years and cost hundreds of millions of dollars, experts said.

Tom Cruise broke up with Elsina Khayrova over his team’s concerns about her chatty ex-hubby: sources

T om Cruise split from his Russian socialite girlfriend in order to avoid issues with her outspoken oligarch ex, a source tells Page Six.

Following news that Cruise and Elsina Khayrova were dating, her ex-husband — the colorful international diamond trader, Dmitry Tsvetkov — gave a long interview to the Daily Mail detailing their marriage and warning Cruise to “keep his eyes and wallet wide open.”

A source tells us that the article worried the very private star’s team.

“He’s filming and can’t be shooting and have her husband saying stuff every time he is mentioned in the press,” a source told us. “They just didn’t want to deal with the ex husband coming up with something nasty to say every few weeks.”

Tsetkov — who reportedly prefers the term “tycoon” over oligarch — also somewhat unusually continuously fanned over Cruise during the interview, calling him his “favorite actor,” stating he has seen “Eyes Wide Shut” a whopping 30 times (and also loves “Rain Man” and “The Firm”), and added that he talked with a Hollywood producer pal about having Cruise play him in a movie about his life.

“I told the producer that the only actor who could play me is Tom Cruise,” quipped Tsetkov to the UK outlet. “We’re about the same height and weight and I would be honored if that could happen. I couldn’t think of anyone better to play me than Tom. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to meet him one day to discuss this project.”

Cruise has been making headlines as he currently films his eighth “Mission: Impossible” movie. The actor, 61, who known for doing his own stunts, was most recently seen sprinting through London for a scene.

The Sun reported that Cruise and Khayrova had split in late February with a source telling the outlet, “There are no hard feelings between them and, for Tom, their relationship simply ran its course.”

The wealthy Russian socialite is the daughter of a Vladamir Putin ally, Russian politician Rinat Khayrova.

Tsetkov, who has British citizenship and was reportedly on the Kremlin’s most wanted list in 2020, claims to have survived assassination attempts .

In the Daily Mail article, he also said he spent over $12 million on clothes and approximately $2.5 million on handbags for his ex during their 11 year marriage. He also claimed he lost nearly $200 million in the divorce.

Their  split made international headlines  as millions were in dispute, including a mansion in Surrey, England, five London apartments, a Bentley and a Ferrari, plus Cartier jewelry and artwork by Renoir and Chagall.

“Irrespective of whoever she’s with, Tom Cruise or anybody else, they should be aware that she likes the finer things in life and has expensive and luxurious tastes,” he told the publication.

But we hear that Khayrova, 36, is still hopeful she and Cruise could rekindle their romance. “She didn’t do anything wrong,” says our source.

However, she doesn’t seem to be taking the breakup too badly. She has been Instagramming from the luxe Amara hotel in Cyprus this week.

On Thursday, she posted an image on Instagram Stories of herself saying: “A woman’s energy is reflected in her daily practice of loving, appreciating, and accepting herself, as well as recognizing her own worth,” with a heart emoji.

In another, a caption read, “Always in love,” with a heart emoji.

Khayrova and Cruise were first spotted together publicly at a party in December in London’s Grosvenor Square, and Page Six exclusively reported that they had met when a friend of Khayrova’s brought her to one of his exclusive Sunday tea parties at his Hyde Park penthouse.

“He has butlers and homemade cakes, and it’s all very British,” said our source at the time.

In June 2022, Page Six  exclusively reported  that Cruise was shopping for apartments in the UK after falling in love with London.

Poland activates aircraft after Russian missile incursion during wave of attacks on Ukraine

A Russian long-range cruise missile heading for western Ukraine briefly entered Polish territory overnight, prompting the country’s armed forces to launch “all necessary procedures” to protect its airspace, including activating Polish and allied aviation.

The incident came as Russia launched a punishing wave of missile and drone strikes on Ukraine. On Friday, Russia attacked power facilities throughout Ukraine, triggering outages and killing at least three people.

The missile, moving at a speed of almost 500 mph, was in Polish airspace for 39 seconds at 4:23 a.m. (11:23 p.m. ET Saturday), going about a mile into the country, the country’s military said.

Even a mistaken Russian missile incursion into the airspace of NATO-member Poland runs the risk of escalating and widening the war next door.

On Sunday, Poland’s Foreign Affairs Ministry promised it would “demand explanations from Russia in connection with another violation of the country’s airspace.”

“Above all, we call on the Russian Federation to stop terrorist air attacks on the inhabitants and territory of Ukraine,” the ministry said in a statement on X .

The last time something like this happened, in December 2023, Poland summoned the Russian charge d’affaires , demanding an explanation.

Earlier, Ukrainian news outlets reported on Telegram that during a major attack on Lviv, Russian missiles were flying close to the border with Poland.

“Polish and allied aircraft have been activated, which may result in increased noise levels, especially in the south-eastern part of the country,” Poland’s armed forces said on X.

Image: UKRAINE-RUSSIA-CONFLICT-WAR\

Russia has been pounding Ukraine for days in attacks  portrayed by Moscow  as revenge for Ukrainian attacks during its recent presidential election .

“For the third pre-dawn morning this week, all of Ukraine is under an air alert and has been advised to seek shelter,” U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink posted on X early Sunday. “Russia continues to indiscriminately launch drones and missiles with no regard for millions of civilians, violating international law.”

The Ukrainian armed forces said 29 cruise missiles and 28 Iranian “Shahed” drones were involved in the attacks overnight. Of those, Ukraine downed 18 cruise missiles and 25 drones, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.

Russian officials did not immediately comment on the events overnight.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said on Telegram there were no attacks on the city, but some 20 missiles and seven attack drones had been launched against the broader Lviv region, targeting “critical infrastructure.”

Several blasts were heard in Kyiv after its defense systems repelled strikes, according to Vitali Klitschko, the city’s mayor.

Ukraine air defense forces destroyed about a dozen Russia-launched missiles over Kyiv and in the vicinity of the capital, Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said on the Telegram.

Preliminary information showed no casualties or major damage as a result of the attacks, he said.

Separately, the Ukrainian military said it had hit two Russian landing ships during strikes on the annexed Crimean Peninsula.
