everlane The Drape Trench Coat

Best Long Raincoat

Long on height and style, Everlane’s Drape Trench is a full-coverage fave. Puddle-dodgers will appreciate just how super comfy it is, with a longer yet relaxed fit that lets you kick out your leg to hop over soggy street corners. Features such as a storm flap, a cotton-twill exterior, and Cupro lining check off all the practical details, and the style couldn’t be more “Casablanca classic.” Tip: Size down for a more fitted look.

columbia Women's EvaPOURation™ Jacket

Best Short-and-Sporty Raincoat

Even if it’s raining buckets, you’re not going to sit out a bucket-list trip. But you do need a shorter raincoat that can keep up with you. Columbia Sportswear’s EvaPOURation Jacket fits the bill with waterproof, breathable, wicking fabric in a short, classic fit. The jacket’s attached hood, underarm venting, and adjustable sleeves and hem means it can adapt to your needs as you explore—whether that’s hiking up Machu Picchu or canoeing down the Mekong River. Bonus: This folds into its own pouch for easy packing.

Cole Haan Double Face Packable Rain Jacket

Best Midi-Length Raincoat

Those raincoat Goldilocks that are split between short and long will find this raincoat juuuust right. Cole Haan offers a simple, chic everyday option with its Double Face Packable Rain Jacket. There’s loads to love here: a lightweight construction, protective funnel-neck, removable hood, hidden front zip, and a nifty back bow detail. Even better, there are two front snap-button flap pockets, plus a smaller zipper pocket, perfect for keeping your phone dry. The length—35 inches—is short enough for sashaying in the rain a la Gene Kelly, but long enough to shield you from showers.

Herschel Supply Co. Forecast Rain Coat

Best Retro Raincoat

Score some major hipness points with the Herschel’s Forecast Rain Coat. Part of Herschel Supply Co.’s first clothing collection, this old-school raincoat is made to withstand inclement weather—and look cool while doing it. Details like rainproof fabric with fused seams, a snap-button placket, hood, elastic-cuffed long sleeves, and button-flap pouch pockets keep it durable in a downpour. And its portable weight makes it great for layering over a hoodie or that ironic ugly sweater.

Target Women's Rain Jacket - A New Day

Best Budget Raincoat

Did you bottom out your bank account on your flight? Don’t sweat it. You can still get quality rain gear for under $50 bucks, and this jacket from Target proves it. Available in several colors including an especially beautiful burgundy, this lightweight outerwear doesn’t skimp, despite its mega-cheap price. A fully lined interior, drawstring waistline, and adjustable hood keep you dry without going broke.

Kate Spade New York Deco Dot Rain Jacket

Best Patterned Raincoat

Amp up your adorable factor with Kate Spade’s Deco Dot Rain Jacket. A heavy downpour of big white polka dots are scattered across its classic black background. And loads of handy details make this both pretty and practical, from its attached hood and front-snap placket to its notched lapel and deep pockets. The coat is also lined, giving it a bit more buffer from all that bluster, all while keeping you super cute and classy.

Burberry Kensington Mid-Length Heritage Cotton Trench Coat

Best Luxury Raincoat

Any fashion influencer worth her followers knows that a Burberry trench is the holy grail of raincoats. This preppy little number has all the iconic details that makes the brand luxurious: a tapered waist, notched lapels, and epaulettes, plus belted cuffs, a double-breasted horn-button front, and side welt pockets with button closures. Then again, you’ll have to fork over $1,790 smackers to own this beauty. But for those that want to look first-class fabulous, The Kensington Mid-Length Heritage Cotton Trench can’t be beat.

L.L.Bean Sweater Fleece 3-in-1 Jacket

Best Outdoor Windproof Raincoat

Rain and hard wind are double trouble for travelers exploring the outdoors. But you can block both with the L.L. Bean Sweater Fleece 3-in-1 Jacket. This trifecta of toastiness marries the warmth of fleece with a durable, water-resistant shell for an all-season combo. The fleece can be zipped out if the weather warms up. Or you can ditch the outer layer if the rain lets up. When you need the ultimate weather protection, sandwich them together for delicious rainproof warmth.

The main differences between raincoats and rain jackets are listed below; take these into account while choosing which one is right for you.

Rain jackets are an essential piece of gear for any traveler, whether you’re exploring the urban jungle or hiking through remote wilderness. A good rain jacket not only keeps you dry but also protects you from wind and cold, allowing you to stay comfortable and enjoy your adventures to the fullest.

  • Weather Protection : A quality rain jacket serves as your shield against rain, wind, and other elements. It keeps you dry and comfortable, allowing you to enjoy your adventures regardless of the weather.
  • Durability : Investing in a durable rain jacket ensures longevity and reliable performance. You want a jacket that can withstand rugged terrain and frequent use without compromising its effectiveness.
  • Comfort and Fit : The best rain jackets offer a balance of comfort and fit. They should provide ample room for movement while still maintaining a snug fit to prevent water from seeping in.

Below are the features that we should consider while buying a rain jacket for a specific need.

  • Consider the Climate and Weather Conditions : Before purchasing a rain jacket, consider the typical weather conditions of your destination. Choose a jacket with the appropriate level of waterproofing and insulation based on your needs.
  • Assess Your Travel Activities : Think about the activities you’ll be engaging in during your travels. If you’ll be hiking or trekking, opt for a more rugged and durable jacket. For urban exploration, a stylish and lightweight option may be more suitable.
  • Determine Your Budget : Set a budget for your rain jacket purchase and prioritize the features that are most important to you. While premium jackets offer advanced technology and features, there are also budget-friendly options available that provide adequate protection.
  • Cleaning and Drying : Regularly clean your rain jacket according to the manufacturer’s instructions to maintain its waterproofing properties. Use a gentle detergent and avoid fabric softeners, as they can affect the jacket’s performance. Hang it to dry thoroughly after washing.
  • Re-Waterproofing ; Over time, the waterproofing treatment on your rain jacket may wear off. Reapply a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment periodically to restore its water-repelling abilities.
  • Storage : Store your rain jacket in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight when not in use. Avoid folding it for extended periods, as this can cause creases and affect its performance.

Nothing ruins your day like getting caught in the rain without the shield that is a trusty rain jacket. As travelers, it's not always convenient to halt plans when a downpour strikes—a lightweight rain jacket can make all the difference the next time your afternoon hike gets interrupted by an expected shower. The best designs for travelers are completely waterproof, windproof, and packable (bonus points if it stashes down into one of its own pockets). To help narrow your search, we rounded up 13 versatile and durable rain jackets to bring on your next adventure, whether you're anticipating some less-than-perfect weather or want something compact just in case.

Keep scrolling for our top lightweight rain jackets to wear this fall and beyond, from trusted brands like Patagonia, Columbia, Arc'teryx, Rains, and more. But first, let's answer some commonly asked questions you might be wondering while shopping for your new jacket.

How do I wash a rain jacket?

While most rain jackets can be thrown in the washing machine on a gentle setting, always check the brand's website or the jacket's tag for any specific cleaning instructions. If you are machine washing, prevent ripping or damaging its waterproof coating by choosing a delicate cycle and limiting it to a quick wash if possible.

Are packable rain jackets worth it?

Jackets can be heavy, bulky, and take up a lot of precious packing space. Travelers will benefit from buying a lightweight, packable rain jacket that can be folded up tightly to fit inside a carry-on . Some options below can even be packed into their own pocket, like the Columbia Arcadia II and the Patagonia Torrenshell 3L rain jacket.

How should a rain jacket fit?

It's a safe bet to buy your true size in a rain jacket, or slightly larger to accommodate layers. Your rain jacket should be fitted and snug enough to keep you warm and protected, but comfortable enough that you can wear a sweater underneath on chilly days.

Our top picks:

  • Best everyday rain jacket: Patagonia Torrenshell 3L rain jacket
  • Best lightweight rain jacket: Coalatree Whistler windbreaker
  • Best packable rain jacket: Columbia Arcadia II rain jacket

Part of Lands' End's limited-edition 1963 collection which pays homage to its heritage, the Squall anorak is a more fun take on the classic jacket. The fun-colored pullover has a seam-sealed shell, making it fully waterproof and windproof while locking in extra warmth. Its reflective loop tab makes it a safer option to wear at night and the front kangaroo pocket helps you store extra essentials on the go (like snacks—lots of snacks).

A thigh-length rain jacket is a great option to stay a little bit warmer (and a little bit dryer) on a rainy day. Made with a recycled ripstop nylon shell and a durable water-repellent finish, the jacket wicks away raindrops and maintains its windproof nature in up to 60 mph winds. The three-piece hood is adjustable and can be stowed away when you're not using it. And since it packs away in its own left pocket, it's compact enough for travelers.

A sturdy and reliable option loved by outdoorsy travelers, the Carharrt Rain Defender features a water-repellent coating that keeps you dry on rainy days. It's insulated and quilted to keep you warm without being too bulky to pack and it's great for layering over a sweater come winter. Finding durability in a lightweight rain jacket can feel like an oxymoron, but Coalatree has found the secret in its self-healing HiloTech fabric. The Whistler Windbreaker shows off this magic: whether you've got a puncture or tear, just rub your fingers over the rip and the heat and friction will cause it to mend on its own. Even better, the unisex jacket is still DWR (durable water repellent) coated and weighs just seven ounces.

Danish brand Rains designed this rain jacket for an active lifestyle. The two-way waterproof zipper ensures all-around wind and rain protection, while the cap and adjustable hood and hem offer flexibility to cater to any condition. The neutral color options—black, navy, olive, or gray—will blend in with any outfit.

Ideal for hiking, this lightweight rain jacket offers windproof and waterproof protection. The hem-to-bicep venting allows travelers to shed heat while moving so you'll stay warm without overheating. It also features a fully adjustable hood, an elastic drawcord hem to lock in extra insulation, and a key clip.

With a 100 percent recycled polyester shell, the Vuori Oahu rain jacket delivers seam-sealed waterproof protection. This jacket offers a power mesh lining, duckbill hood, and a durable exterior designed to withstand heavy rain. And not only is this packable jacket so sleek, it's ethically made, too.

REI Co-op Drypoint GTX

Best raincoat for men.

What To Consider When Buying A Packable Rain Jacket

Before you take the plunge and purchase a lightweight/packable rain jacket, consider the following features.

Make sure you opt for a coat that is made of durable fabric and one that isn’t going to rip on the slightest sharp edge. You’ll find most jackets claim to be either water repellent/resistant or that they are waterproof. There is a difference, and waterproof is the better option of the two if you’re out for long periods. However, if you’re wandering around for a short time, water repellent/resistant is more than adequate.

You should also consider whether the fabric is breathable, especially if you’re in a tropical or warm climate and it starts to rain.

Of course, you want to look good, so make sure you go for a jacket in color and style that will ‘go’ with most outfits. Avoid bright colors if you want flexibility in your style options, and stick to a shade that matches many outfits.

Functionality

Check for additional features, such as a hood, how many pockets it has, the type of zipper, etc. This entirely depends on what kind of activity you’re going to be wearing it in; if you’re sightseeing or walking around and the weather takes a turn, a general, lightweight jacket will be enough. However, if you’re hiking, you need a coat that isn’t going to rip easily and which has breathability included.

Home » Travel Blog » Best Rain Jacket for Any Travel Needs

During our recent travels, we have been caught out by rain more than once. In fact, sometimes typhoons and tropical storms seemed to become almost a daily occurrence. We have therefore come to realise that having the best rain gear we can pack is a necessity rather than a luxury. If you are looking for the best rain jacket for any of your travel needs, this review rounds up the various options of rain gear available now.

Guide to choosing the best rain jacket for your needs

Like it pin it.

Best Rain Jacket For Any Travel Needs

To choose a suitable waterproof coat you need a good idea of what kind of activities and climates you will be facing during your travels.

If you plan to trek the national parks of the Pacific Northwest, you will need the best rain gear for hiking you can afford, given the likelihood of facing sustained downpours.

Conversely, if you are planning to backpack around southern Europe in summer, then you will probably only need a light raincoat for withstanding the odd (if heavy!) shower.

However, there are a number of factors to be considered, that will determine which is the best rain jacket for your personal travelling needs.

Waterproof versus water-resistant

This is important. A fabric that is water-resistant will only offer limited rain protection and will quickly soak through. There are many cheap rain jackets available that are described as water resistant.

However, the best rain jacket will be made from fully waterproof fabric will keep you much drier for much longer.

Fabric construction

Membranes are used to ensure that fabric is properly waterproofed. Gore tex is the most recognisable name that refers to a 3-layer construction, with the central membrane being the gore tex itself. It offers a breathable yet fully waterproofed fabric.

Some of the more light waterproof jackets may be 2 layer, or 2.5 layers – still waterproof but often less suitable for sustained heavy use. However, if you plan some serious hiking, then consider investing in the best gore tex jacket you can afford.

Features of the best rain jacket

Leak prevention Taped seams will ensure that your rain jacket does not leak through the seams. Taped seams tend to come as standard on any good rain jackets.

Even on the most lightweight waterproof jacket, you want a storm flap covering the zipper in order to keep leaking rain out. Some of the best hiking rain jackets feature laminated zippers to ensure full waterproofing around the zipper area.

Ventilation The best breathable rain jackets, made from porous fabric such as gore tex, maybe don’t need additional ventilation flaps. However, if your choice of fabric is more “plasticky” then do make sure that the rain jacket has underarm ventilation (or “pit zips”). This will ensure that your skin breathes, and you will sweat less.

Pockets If you opt for a more lightweight raincoat, you may have to sacrifice pocket space in order to decrease weight and increase packability.

Weight and packability This can often be a trade-off against other factors such as price and sturdiness of the fabric. If you are looking for the ultimate lightweight fabric to pack as small as possible AND get the best waterproof jacket for your money, you will find you need to invest more in a higher-end product.

Rain jackets for men vs women As you will see from this list, there is no significant difference in the best mens waterproof jacket versus womens waterproof jacket. All jackets are available in both male and female styles, with fabric and features consistent across both styles.

Fit and colours are the only variations between raincoats for women and men. With all this in mind, below are our recommendations for the best waterproof rain jacket depending on your travel needs.

Best rain jacket, all round best rain jacket.

Best rain jacket

All things considered when choosing a suitable rain jacket for most weather eventualities, the all round best waterproof coat we found is the North Face Venture 2 jacket. Available for both men and women, it has a number of features that we think make it overall the best backpacking rain jacket available.

This fully waterproof jacket is made from 2.5 layer Dryvent fabric. As well as taped seams, the fabric is also fully windproof. It has zippered pockets, and the relaxed fit means it is comfortable to wear.

If you do plan on wearing it in very cold weather, make sure to take a size bigger so you can layer up underneath – although it is windproof, it does not come with any inner lining.

The models for both men and women come in a large range of colours. Check prices for North Face Venture 2 jacket for MEN. Check prices for North face Venture 2 jacket for WOMEN.

Best Lightweight rain jacket

Best Lightweight Rain Jacket

The Columbia EvaPOURation mens lightweight waterproof rain jacket weighs in at just under 350 grams, making it the best light rain jacket we found. It has an elasticated hood to adjust the fit around the face, and adjustable Velcro wrist straps, which make it more effective at keeping the rain out.

Made from 2.5 layer moisture-wicking fabric, it is highly effective even in very heavy rain, whilst keeping the skin dry. Armpit zips ensure adequate ventilation.

The Columbia EvaPOURation jacket also has two mesh pockets. One of these can be used to pack the jacket into a compact size for stowing into a backpack or day bag.

Although not offering much in the way of warmth, overall this is the best lightweight waterproof jacket we found and a competitor for the best packable rain jacket to boot.

Check prices for Columbia EvaPOURation jacket for MEN. Check prices for Columbia EvaPOURation jacket for WOMEN.

Best packable rain jacket

Best packable rain jacket

Marmot PreCip rain jacket boasts that it can be compressed into a standard wide-mouthed water bottle, as well as one of it’s own built in pockets, meaning we can recommend it as the best packable rain jacket on this list.

Weighing in at under 325g, it can also rival the Columbia EvaPOURation for best lightweight rain jacket for travel too.

It comes in at the more budget-friendly end of the scale for branded rain jackets. Nevertheless it still features an adjustable hood and cuffs, storm flaps and a 2.5 layer construction.

The Marmot PreCip is actually my personal choice of womens lightweight rain jacket simply because I absolutely love the shade of the “Deep lake” colour it comes in!

Best rain jacket for hiking

Best rain jacket for hiking

Buying a rain jacket for hiking will need to consider levels of warmth and durability as well as waterproofing and weight. Getting the best hiking jacket for your own needs means thinking about the conditions you will be hiking in (sunny, heavy rain, snow or sleet) and the other layers you will be carrying or wearing.

The sturdiest hiking rain jacket we can recommend would be the Arc’teryx Beta AR jacket. This jacket features a large hood and high collar that wraps around the neck, offering additional protection against downpours.

It is made from 3 layered Gore tex. This high-tech fabric combined with the pit-zips for additional ventilation make it probably the best breathable rain jacket on this list.

This is an extraordinarily durable jacket, ensuring the very best protection against wind and rain. The price tag and the weight of the jacket does reflect this, however the Arc’teryx Beta AR jacket is proven to stand up to even extreme weather conditions.

For this reason, it is the best rain jacket for hiking that we can recommend, if you are planning to trek through changeable weather conditions.

Check prices for Arc’teryx Beta AR jacket for MEN. Check prices for Arc’teryx Beta AR jacket for WOMEN.

Minimalist Rain Jacket

If your budget cannot stretch to the Arc’teryx, or if you are looking for something a little lighter for less extreme hikes, then the Marmot Minimalist jacket is a good-value compromise. It offers 2.5 layer Gore-tex protection, combined with Pac-lite technology.

This means it’s lighter than the Arc’teryx but still offers a high level of rain and wind proofing via the large hood and adjustable wrist cuffs.

However, the “Minimalist” moniker seems to refer more to the simple design aesthetic than the weight itself – this is certainly not the lightest jacket on this list. The fabric is also not quite as breathable as the Arc’teryx jacket above, although the pit zips do allow you to get rid of excess heat.

Nevertheless, it is a high-performing jacket at a more budget-friendly price point than the Arc’teryx, which remains our top choice for the best rain jacket for hiking.

Check prices for Marmot Minimalist jacket for MEN. Check prices for Marmot Minimalist jacket for WOMEN.

If you are planning on doing some serious hiking, then you may want to consider investing in something additional to cover your bottom half. The North Face Venture 2 waterproof pants combined with your hiking rain jacket will create full-body waterproofing – the best rain suit for all wet weather conditions. For women’s models of waterproof pants, click here .

Best cheap rain jacket

Best cheap rain jacket

If budget is your primary consideration then we also have you covered. The best hooded rain jacket with a purse-friendly price tag is the Givbro Mens Outdoor Hooded rain jacket. This soft-shell jacket has taped seams, pockets and a hood as well as being constructed from waterproof and windproof breathable fabric.

Although it describes itself as lightweight, it comes in at between 600-800g – which is not the most feather-like mens lightweight waterproof jacket on this list! However, at under USD 50, it won’t bust your budget and don’t worry, the Givbro also comes as a women’s raincoat with hood too.

Check prices for Givbro rain jacket for MEN. Check prices for Givbro rain jacket for WOMEN.

Best fashion-friendly womens rain jacket with hood

Soteer Lightweight Raincoat

Finally, for any female fashionistas who are looking to combine form and function into a womens rain jacket with a hood, then the womens Soteer lightweight rain coat is a popular option.

With a more elegant and feminine cut than the traditional outdoors style jackets listed above, it is also waterproof, windproof, quick-drying and small-packing.

Combined with a tiny price tag, it makes a great budget-friendly addition to your travel wardrobe. Check the latest price on Amazon.

As you can see, the best rain jacket for you will really depend on where you are planning to travel to, and the kind of activities you will be doing whilst wearing it.

Any of these jackets listed above will keep you perfectly dry during a quick walk in a rain shower. However, you should consider the extra investment if you are planning to use your rain jacket for extended periods outdoors or as part of a layering system for keeping warm and dry during winter hikes.

We hope this list helps you make the best choice of rain jacket for your travel needs!

The Best Lightweight Rain Jackets for Travel

Sure, a rain jacket should keep you dry—but its packability is equally important when you’re traveling. After all, even the soggiest destinations enjoy clear skies sometimes, and that’s when you’ll appreciate an outer layer that’s lightweight and compact enough to be stowed conveniently in a waterproof backpack . These five winning rain jackets do that and more: They fend off drizzles and downpours while looking good, too.

Marmot Bantamweight Jacket

  • Buy now: Women’s, $275, marmot.com ; Men’s, $275, uniqlo.com
  • Sizing: XS-XL (women’s); S-XXL (men’s)
  • Best for: Ultra-light packers

When weight-saving is your greatest priority, consider this tissue-thin jacket. At five ounces, the Bantamweight is as light and silky as some windbreakers, yet it delivers a lot more weather protection: It’s fully waterproof, thanks to rain-thwarting Pertex Shield fabric that’s treated with a durable water-repellent finish to make moisture bead off the surface. It also leaves you feeling less clammy than many windbreakers do because the Bantamweight’s underarm fabric is peppered with laser-drilled perforations that vent heat and perspiration. We’ve worn it on drizzly hikes to jungle waterfalls and barely steamed up inside.

It’s fairly fitted to begin with, but for additional shaping (and to prevent the hem from blowing up in gusty winds) a thin cinch cord is built into the waistline. Two zippered hand pockets hold keys and a wallet. When packed, this jacket is as small as a softball, so it disappears into a purse or backpack. And because it barely registers on a luggage scale, it’s perfect for weight-restricted travel on small aircraft and other vehicles with limited cargo allowances.

Columbia OutDry Ex Reign Jacket

  • Buy now: Women’s, $150, columbia.com ; Men’s, $150, columbia.com
  • Sizing: XS-XXL (women’s); S-XXL (men’s)
  • Best for: Adventure travelers

Ideal for hiking and backpacking in wet weather, the OutDry Ex Reign Jacket is light, packable, and utterly rainproof. Unlike most Gore-Tex jackets, which sandwich a waterproof/breathable membrane between layers of fabric, this jacket’s water-thwarting OutDry film covers the exterior and makes it feel (and behave) like a rain slicker. Water simply sheets off the material, and that moisture-shedding property is particularly handy when it’s time to pack it away—one brisk shake removes virtually all the droplets. That breathable membrane let us log long uphills without overheating, and the fabric’s four-way stretch allows for full freedom of movement. The jacket’s interior is lined with a soft, slightly fuzzy microfiber that wicks away sweat and feels soft against the skin, but it’s also tough enough to face the elements. We appreciated the more muted appearance when transitioning from New Zealand’s trails to Christchurch’s sidewalks.

Burton Narraway Rain Jacket

  • Buy now: Women’s, $120, burton.com
  • Sizing: XS-XL (women’s)
  • Best for: Playful festivarians

Some rain jackets feel stiff and plasticky, but not the women’s Narraway. Its polyester shell and lining feel supple and stay quiet—rather than emitting the crinkly sounds of a potato-chip bag. We also love the whimsical colors and prints, which bring a merry vibe to outdoor concerts and farmers’ markets. Its casual styling hides some serious technology: The lining fabric features tiny pores that open or close depending on the wearer’s temperature. That kept the Narraway from feeling stifling during brief periods of sun during a day out in Seattle’s Discovery Park . But once the clouds and wind returned, the jacket was cozy enough that an additional sweater was unnecessary. The two fleece-lined hand pockets even warm numb fingers.

Like most rain jackets, the shell is coated with a durable water-repellent finish, but the Narraway’s is free of potentially toxic PVCs. And all of the jacket’s materials are bluesign-approved —meaning that from production to disposal, they meet the highest safety standards for people and the environment.

Arc’teryx Sawyer Coat

  • Buy now: Men’s, $449, arcteryx.com
  • Sizing: S-XXL (men’s)
  • Best for: Urban explorers

This company’s mountaineering jackets are celebrated for their clean lines and weatherproof construction, and the men’s Sawyer Coat delivers those same qualities in a city-ready look. The high-performance Gore-Tex fabric seals out sustained downpours, yet remains impressively breathable—it proved its mettle on New York’s streets during a subway closure in the middle of a torrential storm. Because such sidewalk maneuvers don’t require the same high-stepping that skiing or mountaineering do, the Sawyer Coat is cut longer to provide better protection for the upper legs. Meanwhile, smartly tailored shoulder seams and underarm gussets provide full freedom of movement through the arms and chest, so the fabric doesn’t bind when wearers reach for a hand-strap on the subway or hoist luggage into an airplane’s overhead bin. And just like Arc’teryx’s mountaineering jackets, the Sawyer Coat is impressively lightweight (15 ounces) and packable (the size of a grapefruit when compressed)

Joules Golightly Packable Jacket

  • Buy now: Women’s, $70, joulesusa.com
  • Sizing: 2-16 (women’s)
  • Best for: Fashionistas

Offered a dozen flamboyant prints, this women’s trench adds splash to any outfit and proves that rainwear doesn’t have to look stodgy. The superlight fabric feels gauzy enough for summertime showers and also makes the Golightly ultra-packable, despite the fact that it extends to mid-thigh. (It folds into its own pocket for easy transport.) The fabric and seams are waterproof but not breathable, so this isn’t the best choice for strenuous pursuits. Climbing hills or hurrying to make your dinner reservation will likely steam up the interior and leave you feeling clammy. But the lack of a high-tech, breathable membrane also makes the Golightly more affordable than performance-oriented jackets. After all, not everyone logs hours of activity in extended rain, and travelers who simply need basic coverage for short jaunts between the Lyft and the pub will find this jacket a pleasing accessory.

Best Travel Rain Jacket to Stay Dry on the Go

A good travel rain jacket is worth its weight in gold. It never fails that you set out to explore on a sunny day only to have it turn into rain unexpectedly.

It’s not so bad if you’re traveling in a city where you can easily duck into a hotel or a museum to avoid the rain but if you are out on an adventure in the middle of nowhere, that can be a whole other story. The travel raincoat is an essential item for your trip.

That said, finding the perfect raincoat can be a real challenge. There are many on the market and not all travel raincoats are the same.

So where do you start? There are many factors that you should take into consideration to find the right travel rain jacket that not only fits your style but helps you to stay dry.

Never fear, we’ve tried and tested many of them and have done the leg work on the art of selecting the perfect rain gear for travel.

In this comprehensive guide, we not only walk you through all the considerations of choosing new gear but offer our recommendations based on our experience and the items we use for our own travels.

How to Choose the Best Travel Raincoat

Table of Contents

Best Travel Raincoat - Divergent Travelers

Surprisingly, many people don’t think about these things before selecting their go-to travel raincoat and their vacations are hampered because they did not make the right selection in travel rain gear. Don’t be this person. Do your research and select the gear that will work for the type of travel you have planned.

Travelers need functional gear that will hold up for wherever their tickets take them; from the majestic fjords of Norway, the rugged landscape of Patagonia, the cobblestone streets of London and everywhere in-between.

Not all rain gear is created equal and we have tried our fair share of the most popular brands during our travels, all claiming to have the newest and best rain gear.

Unfortunately, I’ve also spent more adventures cold and wet than I care to admit. It’s been a learning process and I’m happy to tell you that our own experiences have taken the guesswork out of the task for you.

Features: The Ultimate in Comfort

Something that we always look for in a travel rain jacket is pit zips. I know this sounds funny, but once you’ve had them you never really go back. Pit zips are factory-installed zippers that run along the armpit seam of your rain jacket. They allow you to vent that area to increase airflow while still protecting you from the rain.

Other features we love include the ability to pack the jacket into its own pocket so it takes up a small amount of space, removable hoods, seam-sealed zippers, hood adjustment on the side and back, adjustable wrist holes, waterproof stash pockets, and no stick flush linings.

Weather: What kind of weather will you encounter?

I know what you are thinking, you can’t plan for every type of weather, but you can be prepared by doing some simple research on weather conditions at your travel destination. Doing a simple search on the internet for your destination and the month you are traveling will give you a wealth of useful information to aid in packing.

Once you know this, you can determine what type of raincoat will be suitable for your trip. If you travel a lot, you may even want to consider having more than one set of rain gear for different climates. We both have multiple sets of travel rain gear because the items we use in hot, wet climates are not the same as what we use in cool, wet climates.

Waterproof vs Water-resistant

Most rain jackets claim to be waterproof. A rain jacket is called waterproof when it keeps out all types of rain, but not all rain jackets are the same.

Columbia puts their products to the test in their labs and out in the field. They don’t put waterproof on their items unless it’s truly waterproof.

Rain jackets featuring a hybrid shell are typically water-resistant, not waterproof. You will find this on most all-around rain jackets, and they tend to feature a mix of a soft and hard shell type of fabric.

It is normal for rain jackets like this to have multiple types of fabrics incorporated into one type of rain jacket. These raincoats work great for light rain and are truly breathable, however, the breathable fabric isn’t normally very water-resistant.

Activities: What kind of activities will you be doing?

Your activity level when traveling will determine the type of rain jacket you should consider for your trip. Are you exploring a city or are you exploring a back-country hiking trail? Those two different activates require a different type of travel raincoat.

If you’re going to be hiking or doing a lot of walking, you will want to look at features that allow you to regulate temperature while wearing your jacket.

Technologies: Not all travel raincoats are the same

Did you know there are different types of weather protection for travel raincoats? Any type of raincoat offers some level of water resistance, but truly understanding the technologies and terms will help you determine what degree of protection a specific travel rain jacket may have.

Breathability

What does breathability mean and why do you care about it in a travel raincoat? Breathability means the fabric works in two ways.

It not only repels water but it allows heat and sweat to wick back through the outside. This is a great technology for active travelers.

Have you ever been hiking in a raincoat and you suddenly started to feel like your hiking in a sauna? No one likes to be a sweaty prune, that’s what’s magical about waterproof, breathable travel rain jackets. They should not be overlooked.

Top Water-Resistant Rain Jacket

This is a type of raincoat that’s also breathable however it only can handle light rain for a brief time. For example most windbreakers and featherweight jackets.

If it really starts raining heavy while you’re out exploring, you will get wet. The kind of trips we bring our water-resistance travel raincoats on are trips like when we road-tripped from Miami to the Florida Keys where if it did rain it would be a quick light rain.

These types of raincoats are also referred to as a soft-shell. This is the classic version of rain jackets that integrates an insulating layer with a water-restraint shell.

The trade-off is greater breathability for lesser protection from rain, wind, and cold. Softshells are best for high exertion activities where perspiration is a greater concern.

Top Windproof Rain Jackets

Everyone uses different terms for wind-blocking jackets, such as windproof and wind-resistant, but they all mean the same. All types of rain jackets are also windproof.

This makes sense since the basic outer design of a rain jacket is made to block out rain, wind, and rain.

These ultralight travel rain jackets can easily pack down into a ball, making them great for packing. Most windproof/wind-resistant raincoats are made for light to misty rain days. If it’s steady rain, the rain will soak through leaving you wet and disappointed.

Men’s Roan Mountain Jacket

Notable Technologies: Nylon waterproof shell with adjustable cuffs.

Top-Down Filled Raincoats

That’s right, with today’s technologies you can now have the comfort of a down rain jacket. Bringing only a rain jacket does not mean you have to be cold on a wet day.

The new down rain jacket from Columbia keeps you warm, dry and protected so you can go out exploring. Not all down jackets are waterproof, this is a game-changer technology by Columbia.

We all know down is great until it gets wet but you no longer have to worry about bringing a down jacket to a wet climate. These jackets are going to be the next big thing in travel; you heard it here first. PS: Lina LOVES her OutDry Ex Eco Down Rain Jacket .

We lived in ours while we hiked across Greenland recently and to be honest, never leave home without them.

‘I’m a Tour Guide Working Outside in One of the Wettest Cities in the U.S., and These Are the Rain Essentials I Swear By’

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

If there's anyone who knows how to dress for the outdoors best, it's tour guides. Snow, rain or shine, they're wrapped up in weatherproof gear all year long to shield themselves from nature's roughest elements. Since the rainy season is upon us (because spring showers bring May flowers), it's always a good idea to pack some rain essentials, be it a rain jacket , poncho, boots , or umbrella, so you can avoid drenched clothes and puddle-soaked shoes wherever adventure takes you next. By no means are we rain experts, so we left it to two tour guides to share the best rain essentials to pack on your next trip.

  • 01 Rain jackets
  • 03 Umbrellas
  • 04 Rain boots
  • Bill Dodenhoff, MBA
  • Christopher Falvey

For Bill Dodenhoff, MBA , a New Orleans-based tour guide, the rainy season exists all year long, so he recommends ponchos. Not only are they inexpensive, they're lightweight and packable in a personal bag in case of unexpected storms. "My preference is a longer length, light, and totally waterproof," Dodenhoff says.

For those who live in rainy areas, Christopher Falvey , co-founder of Unique NOLA Tours, also in New Orleans, recommends a quality rain jacket . "A good rain jacket is highly water-resistant, has a hood to protect your head, and pockets to hold your items so you don't have to carry a bag," says Falvey. You also can't underestimate a good pair of waterproof shoes. They insulate your toes from nature's elements and save your socks from being soiled the next time it decides to pour.

We tapped two tour guides for their specific shopping input and recommendations. No matter the forecast, check out the rain essentials that they swear by for when things get shower-y.

Rain jackets

Sizes available: XS-XL

Navigating rainy weather is no walk in the park, but tour guides recommend a quality jacket like Outdoor Voices Precippoly. It’s engineered with tour-guide approved elements like a waterproof shell and zippered vents, so you’ll never have to walk around soaked or in a sweat again. Also neat? It comes with a whopping seven pockets to store your phone, keys, wallet, and other essentials you may need and bungee cords to cinch the jacket for an adjusted fit. Windy and wet conditions are no match.

Sizes available: 0-20

To protect your legs from getting wet, opt for a longer jacket like Lululemon’s Rain Rebel Jacket. This hooded jacket is made of a polyester outer that keeps you dry all day long and features a roomier fit to allow for layering inside when things get chilly. Strategically placed vents make this jacket breezy, and the cinchable waist prevents you from losing shape with its looser fit. Rain, rain, go away!

Sizes available: XXS-XL

The Renew Anorak ticks all of the boxes of a quality rain jacket with its spacious hood, longer fit, and waterproof outer, which is made of 14 recycled bottles (yay for the environment). Incorporated into the design of the jacket is a hidden drawcord that makes wearing it easy (loose or tight, wear it however you’d like). No matter what the forecast is projected to be, this waterproof and stylish jacket has got you covered.

Sizes available: S-XL

This Dryrobe long-sleeve parka comes recommended by Dodenhoff. “The lining and outer fabric wick away water and keeps me dry no matter the weather,” he says. Unlike other rain jackets, this one is lined with fleece and has a zipped closure to lock in warmth no matter the activity. Plus, it boasts a waterproof outer layer that sheds one rain drop at a time. Finally , a jacket you can wear for beaching, dog walking, camping, or water sports.

Sizes available: XS-XXL

The North Face consistently spews out quality outerwear, so it’s a no brainer to go to them for rain jackets. Waterproof, hooded, and mid-weight, this loose-fitting jacket is ideal for walking, trekking, or commuting in the rain. Throughout the jacket, you’ll find drawstring cords to adjust for the best fit and pockets to dip your hands in whenever the chills become too much.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

For a durable jacket that will last you, Falvey recommends Patagonia. “I’d recommend because they meet all of the qualifications for a good rain jacket: they have hoods and pockets are are highly water resistant, but they are also comfortable [since] they do not restrict movement,” he explains. Whenever the forecast is acting up, you can count on this jacket’s water-repellent shell, hand-warming pockets, and nylon shell to keep you dry and toasty.

quince rain jacket

No roundup would be complete without an editor favorite: Quince. Beyond the endless basics, Quince has a weatherproof rain jacket that will get you through thick or thin. Made of polyester and recycled polyester, the jacket is waterproof and has a durable, water-repellent finish to stop raindrops in its tracks. Beyond that, it’s lightweight, travel-friendly, and features two zippered hand pockets for cold days or storing essentials. Plus, it helps that the material is OEKO-TEX certified, so your skin is in good hands. Praise Quince!

Rain ponchos

totes rain poncho

Originally $14, now $6

Rain ponchos are generally inexpensive, and this one is on sale for just $6. Made of vinyl, this poncho is lightweight, waterproof, and ultra packable—which is ideal for travelers. Plus, it comes with a hood to keep your head and hair-do nice and dry when the rain strikes.

Sizes available: one size

saphirose poncho

Sizes: one size

Ponchos don’t get the best reputation in the fashion industry, but Saphirose’s Rain Poncho puts all of those claims to rest. The trench-coat style is functional as it is fashionable with its full zipper, adjustable cuffs, and full-sized pockets. When the sun shines again, pack up your poncho in its reusable pouch for easy transport.

lanbrella umbrella

If ponchos or rain jackets aren’t your thing, tour guides also swear by a trusty umbrella. This one is equipped with a 10-ribbed, windproof canopy construction that allows air to pass through the vents so that your umbrella doesn’t go flying the second there’s a gust of wind. It’s compact, portable, and is easy to carry (thanks, strap). When you’re done, you can stow it away easily in your bag.

hunter rain boots

Sizes available: 5-11

Hunter’s Original Play Short Boots bring shine and color during gloomy days. Available in a whopping 19 colors, from yellow to iridescent purple, these booties are sure to bring a smile to your face. This pair is constructed out of natural rubber to shut water out and a pull-on tab that makes it easy to slip the shoe on and off. Not to mention, they’re extremely comfortable to wear—which is a major plus, considering most rain boots are known for their stiff fit. Not this pair. Hikes, rain girl walks, and city tours are all possible.

everlane rain boot

This is another go-to comfortable pair of rain boots everyone needs in their closet. Bypass puddles with Everlane’s Rain Boots. Constructed out of 100 percent rubber, these boots are waterproof, easy to clean, have a supportive sole, and offer plenty of room for thick socks. Rubber can be extremely stiff, but these pull tabs and stretchy side panels make slipping these puppies on a breeze. Another perk: the duo color paneling is stylish, so you can pair with jeans and a comfy sweater.

bogs rain boot

Sizes available: 6-12

Bogs Amanda Plush II Chelsea Boot will allow you to take your walks to new heights. This rubber boot shields out water and is 100 percent waterproof (soaked toes, no more). You don’t have to worry about cold feet either thanks to the plush lining inside. Available in yellow and four other colors, these shoes are that statement boot you never knew you needed.

How to Travel in Rainy Weather with the Founder of Stutterheim

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

April showers don’t mean you have to wait for May flowers to explore new places. Rainy seasons vary all over the world anyway, and some places deal with unpredictable wet weather year-round—like Sweden for example.

“In Sweden, we’re not exactly spoiled with warm and sunny weather even during spring and summer,” says Alexander Stutterheim, founder of blogger-favorite Swedish rainwear brand Stutterheim . “The weather is ever-changing—shifting from sunny to rainy, cold to warm, windy to still.”

Stutterheim knows how to prepare for unpredictable weather, so if you’re traveling to a rainy destination or want to be ready for any kind of climate, follow these tips to help you travel better in case of rain.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

Get a packable raincoat.

“If you want to bring your rainwear with you on your trip, it needs to be a lightweight one,” says Stutterheim. “Our classic rubberized cotton doesn’t need to take up half the space in a weekend bag, and that’s why we decided to add them in a lighter material as an alternative to the classics.” Being a thinner option, the lightweight styles are packable and travel friendly, while still offering 100% rain protection with their waterproof fabric and welded seams.

Keep the umbrella at home.

“I wish I was a foreseeable person who would think as far as packing an umbrella but no, I stick to raincoats,” says Stutterheim. “The thing about umbrellas is that you never remember to have them on hand when you need them.” However, there are a few brands that make it slightly easier to travel. This one is the most compact umbrella on the market, and Herschel Supply Co. also makes a travel-friendly option . You can also fit most compact umbrellas in the Away Everywhere Bag umbrella pocket.

Dress in layers.

As the weather warms up, it can be difficult to stay dry and cool. Stutterheim reccommends wearing layers to help you “adjust accordingly to the temperature.” A tank top under a button-up shirt under a sweater with your (packable) raincoat is a good place to start.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

Use your rain shoes for storage.

It’s good to have weatherproof footwear for rainy destinations, but if you’re wary of suitcase space, stuff your shoes with smaller soft items like socks and underwear. Stutterheim offers a sleek rain boot in the Chelsea silhouette, “a pair of handmade, natural rubber rain boots that the first pair I’ve ever been able to walk all day in,” says Stutterheim.

Stay in accommodations with dryers.

If you know you’re going to be getting wet, and by association your clothing too, be sure to stay somewhere that has a washer/dryer handy. Some hotels offer laundry service, and you can also filter for this kind of amenity on Airbnb.

Pack a waterproof laundry bag just in case.

If you get caught in the rain, it can be harrowing to have to re-pack your clothes before they fully dry. But you can get waterproof laundry bags that separate the wet from the dry.

Use technology.

Download Dark Sky , which has up to the minute weather reports and can even tell you just how much precipitation you can expect wherever there’s a doppler radar. You can even set it to send you alerts for inclement weather.

How to Prepare for a Rainy Travel Season (And Stay Dry!)

Rainy season travel offers green and lush landscapes to explore, but also brings logistical challenges when making your packing checklist. in this thorough guide, we’ll show you what to pack when it’s going to be a wet vacation, and how to stay dry in the tropics.

Sadly the sun doesn’t shine 24/7 in the tropics. If you’re heading to places like  Costa Rica  or  Southeast Asia —or anywhere during its rainy season—you’re going to want to make sure you’ve packed adequate wet-weather gear.

Whatever your itinerary, and whatever your budget, use these helpful  packing tips  to help you stay dry on what promises to be a wet (but beautiful) adventure.

Best Rainy Season Travel Gear for Adventure Travelers

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing travel gear to use specifically during rainy season. Waterproof, quick-dry, durable fabrics are a must unless you want to carry wet and heavy items around in your pack. It’s also vital that you keep your feet clean and dry or you’ll risk nasty fungal infections that can eat away at your skin. Gross right?!

While tracking down kit on your list, listen up: You should consider the eco-credentials of the travel gear you buy from now on.

Use our guide to our  favorite eco-friendly travel buys , which includes details on Eagle Creek’s approach to sustainable manufacturing. And consider these the top options for each type of bag you might bring along:

●     The  Migrate Duffel 40L   is the perfect affordable waterproof duffel that will perform well during even the rainiest trip. It’s carry-on sized, made from water repellent 900D heavy-duty TPU, and its seamless bottom bathtub construction prevents water from puddles or other sources from entering the duffel. Total win.

●     The  National Geographic Utility 40L Backpack   offers maximum performance in a comfortable, ergonomically designed backpack. Ultra-durable weatherproof Tarpaulin and zippers guarantee not a drop of water will touch the gear packed inside.

●     If you’re hauling a lot of gear around, look no further than the  Yonder Rolling Trunk , which has weather-resistant fabrics and zippers so your gear is always protected, and a very handy front vertical zip compartment that separates any wet gear from main compartment.

Essential Rainy Season Packing Checklist

Gore-tex hiking boots and quick dry socks : Wet feet can lead to awful fungal infections. so if you’re planning to go hiking in monsoon season, make sure you’re well equipped with waterproof hiking boots and plenty of socks.

Microfiber towel : Pack something ultra-light and ultra-absorbent that will provide quick relief if you need to dry off in a hurry. This  TravelLite towel  is a great option.

Raincoat or poncho : Choose either or both depending on the location, however, don't forget that evenings in the tropics can actually get cold—the right raincoat will provide both warmth and protection from the wet.

Mosquito repellent : Experiment with natural alternatives to DEET where possible, but if you’re at all concerned about major mosquito-borne viruses like Malaria, consult your doctor about the right malaria and dengue-prevention strategy.

Waterproof backpack cover : This isa must unless you’re planning to travel with a hard-plastic case (and even then you should be sure your luggage was waterproof locks and zippers!).  This durable pack cover  can also be used as added protection when checking your bag at the airport.

Waterproof duffel : If your current backpack is looking a little worse for wear, consider investing in a waterproof option that’s manufactured with eco-credentials. This  waterproof duffel bag  will keep the rain off your essentials and comes with a shoulder strap for hands-free carrying.

Head torch : Rainy season in the tropics often brings risk of blackouts. Have your own light source to hand on a night, just in case.

Water-resistant packing cubes :  Packing cubes  are great to separate your wet and dry clothing/shoes in your pack when you travel, even outside of rainy season. But when it’s monsoon season, you need these  durable, waterproof packing cubes , which you can even use to store your electronics inside for additional protection from an afternoon downpour.

Water-resistant and mud-proof shoe sacs : When you’re out in the elements, it’s inevitable that you’ll need to need to pack your muddy shoes away. This  shoe sac  features LinkSeal™ Mesh technology to resist even the muddiest rainy season adventure.

Best Fabrics to Wear During Rainy Season Adventures

The best fabrics to wear in wet, warm weather are those that wick moisture away from the skin, are light-weight, and breathable. Look for loose fitting layers made from bamboo and organic cotton, and stick to merino wool for warmer layers to wear when the temperature drops. Choose quality over quantity and opt for eco-conscious brands that promote sustainable manufacturing such as  IceBreaker  and  SmartWool .

Don’t forget that it pays to wear long sleeves and pants in places where mosquitoes are abundant. Viruses like Zika and Dengue Fever are no fun. Trust me, I spent two weeks in bed with the latter when I visited Costa Rica.

How to Dry Wet Clothes When It’s Humid Outside

If you’ve packed quick-dry layers, then drying your clothes will be a breeze, pardon the pun! As long as you squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible and allow air to circulate around them, they shouldn’t require much drying time at all. Store wet items in a  water-repellant travel laundry bag , then hang them from a pegless laundry line.

Tip:  Make sure you change your socks mid-way through a day’s hiking if your boots are wet. Clip or tie your wet socks onto your daypack and the air will soon dry them out; switch two pairs like this on long hikes through wet rainforest and your feet will thank you for it.

Essentially, the best way to make the most of any destination in the rainy season is to embrace the weather and plan your itinerary and  packing list  accordingly. If you’ve packed the right clothing, footwear, and gear, there really isn’t anything you can’t enjoy!

Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that the jacket is made of Omni-Tech; Columbia’s patented water-resistant material. All that wrapped into one make for a pretty great travel jacket that comes in a boatload of colours.

A specialised non-woven fabric makes up the entirety of the garment, which is as close to waterproof as possible. All seams are fully taped and sealed to guarantee water won’t get into a single crack.

Above all, the jacket also contains molded polymer zippers, an adjustable hood, and zippered pockets to lock moisture out.

Raincoats for Kids

Columbia kids’ meander meadow jacket ($35).

The Boyle family over at Columbia works relentlessly to keep offering great products. And the Columbia Kids’ Meander Meadow Jacket is just another slice of that craftsmanship.

Waterproof fabric and flashy colours make the garment one awesome piece of work. Complete with a chin guard, elastic cuffs, and reflective details, it’s no wonder the jacket is so popular. And of course, it doesn’t hurt that there are also zippered pockets and elastic waistbands.

Best of all, boys and girls will certainly adore the colours and styles the jacket comes in.

Lands’ End Kids Waterproof Rain Jacket ($24)

While the name may be quite basic, the Lands’ End Waterproof Rain Jacket is just what the little ones need on a wet day.

Lands’ End Kids Waterproof Rain Jacket

The waterproof and seam sealed jacket is complete with a 100% polyester shell lining, to keep those pesky raindrops out 24/7.

However, kids love to tear their jackets off when the weather heats up. So Lands’ End has prepared for that, by adding a back pocket to stuff the jacket in to. Simply pack the jacket into a compact size, and toss it into a travel bag.

REI Co-op Groundbreaker Rain Jacket ($28)

Traveling around with the kids can be tough. But it can be even tougher when the weather goes mad. Prevent those alligator tears from your young ones with the REI Co-op Groundbreaker Rain Jacket.

The Groundbreaker’s lightweight polyester shell is meant for rain, wind, and even juice spills. Furthermore, water is prevented from creeping in with seams that are sealed along the shoulders, arms, and hood.  Unless the kiddos are taking a swim in a puddle, they will stay nice and dry all year long.

If you’re going to be facing the elements head-on you might need these Duck Boots to go along with your raincoats!

Travel-Friendly Raincoats

Packable raincoats, raincoats for travel. More at une femme d'un certain age.

I love to travel in the Spring, even though it can be a wet season for many destinations. While it’s always a good idea to pack a travel umbrella , you may want to consider including some lightweight water-resistant outerwear.

My packing suggestion is to leave heavy outerwear at home, and use layers for warmth underneath a weatherproof shell. That way, you aren’t stuck shlepping around a bulky, heavy coat when the sun comes out or your sightseeing takes you to museums or other indoor venues.

I also find that simple styles without a lot of hardware, volume, or extraneous details (ruffles, flaps, ties) and in solid fabrics are most versatile and work best for travel. Bonus points for a removable hood (or one that folds away into the collar) and a double zip closure (so you can unzip from the bottom).

Travel Raincoats: Neutrals

Here are a few selections that will rise to the level of Smart Casual and should be easy to pack:

Eddie Bauer Girl On The Go Trench in navy. More travel-friendly raincoats at une femme d'un certain age.

Many of you have recommended this Girl-On-The-Go trench . It’s available in several neutral shades, and in Regular, Petite, Plus, and Tall size ranges.

Cole Haan packable raincoat in Champagne. More packable raincoats at une femme d'un certain age.

This packable raincoat has a nice streamlined shape , and comes with a pouch for packing. I like this “Champagne” color, but there are other colors as well. Offered up to size XXL . ( Plus size in Black .)

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

Olive is always a nice choice , as it can function as either a neutral or color, and plays well with so many other colors. Misses / Tall

Mycra Pac Donatella raincoat in scroll print. Details at une femme d'un certain age.

You may remember Mycra Pac raincoats . While a bit spendy, they are truly lightweight and the reversible design adds to their versatility. Sadly, they no longer seem to be as widely available. The company was purchased in 2017, and the new owners have either not continued to manufacture them, or have reduced distribution.

2½ Week Spring Travel Wardrobe

…and colors.

This year I plan to replace my travel raincoat, and see this as an opportunity to add some color to my travel wardrobe.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

I’ve posted this rain jacket before because it’s just so darn cute in person. It’s now offered in lots more colors, up to size 3x in many of them, and is also in Petite and Tall sizes.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

If you don’t shy away from a bright color, this pretty “lavender cloud” jacket has some nice features like a double zip fastening and pockets that zip closed. Offered in Regular and Petite sizes, as well as Plus .

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

This style is budget-friendly , comes in stripes (with lobsters!) plus some other fun colors. Offered up to size 16.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

This plus-size hooded raincoat is offered in four colors , including “Canyon Rose” shown above.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

This jacket has a cute bow in the back and comes in several different colors. And here’s a longer Mackintosh style , available in four other colors.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

This coat, which blocks both wind and rain , gets great reviews. The red is fun and classic, but there are softer colors and neutrals too.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

Finally, another packable style with an adjustable waist that ties in back. This barely-there pale pink color would also work as a neutral, and be compatible with just about any other color in your travel wardrobe. In sizes XS to XL.

What outerwear do you usually travel with?

I’m with you 100% on the hood and the zipper. I also like pockets. I have a microfiber raincoat (with hood) that I bought eons ago in Paris during a downpour. It’s rather thin, but it’s a swing coat, so I can easily put it on over a warmer jacket. Something else to keep in mind–that you are comfortable in the coat with a couple of layers underneath.

I bought the Reversible Mycro PAC for my first Paris trip and while I love how it looks and wears, I found it to be not very rain resistant. Definitely not good in a down pour and not warm. I now have an REI raincoat that is totally rain proof and wind resistant too. It looks good , too. But not as fashion forward as the Mycro PAC. But I’d rather be dry and warm!

I second the vote for REI raincoats. I have had a black one for many years, knee length with hood, and it traveled with me to Italy last fall. I specifically bought it big enough to wear layers for warmth, and have been very glad for the investment in this item. Agree with Susan’s suggestions for spring/fall travel where heavy winter wear is not needed.

I have the Uniqlo Blocktech coat and it is fabulous. It is light and easy to pack, and great for wind and/or rain.

I bought the LLBean H2Off raincoat for my trip to London last week. It has a zip out warmth liner and adjustable elastic drawstrings for customizing the waist fit and hood. Good value at this time of year, too. Offered in petite size, which was crucial for sleeve length. It is waterproof, not water resistant, which can make a big difference! Very pleased.

I agree with Marguerite. I’m about to take the same coat to France and England for its fifth trip. I might add that it has a double zipper and an interior pocket large enough to hold my mini umbrella. I’m 5’2″, and the medium works over anything I’ve so far wished to wear beneath. Here it is: LLBean H2Off Rain Jacket, which also comes in 2 other lengths: https://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/82605?page=h2off-rain-jacket-primaloft-lined&bc=12-27-610-504728-506593&feat=506593-GN3&csp=f

DGW, I forgot to add the double zipper was an absolute must have. I’m planning to donate all my coats that don’t have one!

I have the full length version of this jacket in blue as well as an older knee length style in khaki. I brought along the zip-out liner for a recent trip to Seattle but didn’t need it, wearing multiple layers underneath. Daytime temps were in the mid 40s and no rain or snow.

Another vote for this coat. I have the unlined version in black. It kept me dry as a bone in a 2 hour downpour and toasty in the low 40’s with a Uniqlo down jacket underneath. It packs well, looks good enough for restaurants, and is comfortable to wear as a casual jacket. I just wish it had a removable hood — that’s the only thing that would get me to trade in this one.

I had this raincoat hanging in my closet for two months before I took its tags off, as I was so certain I wanted only a removable hood. I even tried tucking it inside the coat (which didn’t go well). What I later realized was that the hood was always available (not back in my hotel room), and very easily flipped up, AND it didn’t mess up my hair at all.

I was on the fence about the attached hood, but decided it would be ok. As it turned out, the weather in London last week was so wet and windy, neither hood or umbrella could keep my head dry. It was truly bad hair week.

I just got the Uniglo Blocktech for Europe this September and I love the lightweight aspect and great coverage! And affordable! Love your blog, thanks!

I have the short Mycra Pac donatella in bronze/oak that I use for domestic travel (it packs into its own bag) and for dressier occasions. For international trips I use a black Toad&Co coat that is light weight and kept me dry in an Irish down pour. Its clean lines look good whether in city or country. Around town in sunny Seattle I have an olive anorak that I can live in. ☔️

I always forget to pack a raincoat and end up borrowing one from my Mother in law (if we’re in Paris) or just using an umbrella. I have a shiny red slicker with a hood and pockets; why I always leave it at home, I’ll never know. I think packing for my son and organizing things for the rabbits and the dog, I forget all the stylish practicalities when I go away! Your post will remind me to plan a bit more when we go away for Easter.

I’m VERRRRRY tempted by the lavender one you featured above. What a cheerful spring colour. xx

Some great options! My DD sent me the Joules raincoat in navy polka dot for Christmas and it’s really cute. One thing the website doesn’t mention is that it folds into it’s pocket for compact travel.

I also have the Uniqlo Blocktech and I like a longer length to help keep the legs dry as well.

Sometimes I find it more practical to wear warm leggings under a skirt than to wear jeans in such weather, as the leggings dry so quickly even with our body heat (except around our privates fore and aft, and they are really covered by the coat).

On your recommendation last time, I bought the J Crew Perfect Rain Jacket (shown in pale pink above). Actually I bought 2 of them! Couldn’t decide between the dark moss and ivory so I justified my purchases by deciding to wear the dark moss in the fall and winter and ivory in spring and summer. Plus they were 40% off so I felt better about being a little frivolous. They look so good I even wear them when it isn’t raining. Get compliments on them regularly. Only complaint is that it’s more water resistant than waterproof. I’m going to buy some seam sealer from REI to fix the leaking at the shoulders. They will definitely keep you dry running errands in the rain just not walking the dog in a downpour.

I just received this in the Poppy Red and I love it! I bought it for travel but since we’ve had so much rain in So Cal I’ve been wearing it here too. It was a great price and fit.

For warm weather rain, I like RainCaper. Wrangling an umbrella is just a hassle/hazard. The cape style keeps you dry, but not hot. Lots of colors, many reversible, and size is irrelevant.

I have the Cole Haan packable raincoat in the Champagne color and highly recommend it. (I actually ordered it in black as well, but the champagne was way cuter so the black went back). I took it to Paris last spring and wore it on top of a long sleeve tee and merino wool sweater along with a scarf. It was cold and I was perfectly comfortable. Thank you for your helpful and stylish suggestions.

I bought the Cole Hahn packable raincoat in eggplant last fall, and I love it! It is simple but flattering with the drawstring in the back to give it some shape. This winter I bought an Uber-lightweight packable down coat (also in eggplant), and found that I can layer the raincoat over the down coat to create a slightly warmer winter coat that is now also waterproof. Both came with their own pouch to pack into for travel. Susan, I love your blog! I stumbled on it when I was looking for ideas for travel capsule wardrobes, but now I follow you regularly and look forward to every post. I love your sense of style and have even purchased some of the clothing items you have featured. I wear them often and all now number among my favorite pieces. Many thanks for sharing yourself in such an honest and approachable way. Bonne journée!

Lole lolelife.com is a Montréal based, I guess you’d say athleisure line, originally yoga and similar disciplines, but also normal clothing for work, leisure or travel, often with technical fibres and features. They make several raincoats, including this one:

Piper rain jacket LUWO598 Sorry, they don’t allow copying any content so you’ll have to look up the article and photo at their site. This one is waterproof and seam sealed. It packs away into its little pouch.

I hesitated before because there wasn’t a 2-way zipper, but they do have that feature now. Important if you are cycling and doing other moderate activities during your travel.

There are several colours; dark, bright and pale.

I love my Orvis pack and go jacket raincoat, which I own in last year’s dark taupe color. The hood zips into the collar (I hate hoods unless they’re needed), the waist cinches for shape, there are useful pockets, and it folds down small for traveling. The sleeves are too long for my petite frame, but that’s true of most brands that don’t offer petite sizes. Living in Portland I own several raincoats and this is my favorite. Needed it this past week in LA when torrential rain crushed my dreams of CA sunshine!

I’ve wanted to buy a new raincoat for a few years now, simply because I’m tired of the one I have. I bought a rather expensive chocolate brain raincoat (similar to the RAINS one) 22 years ago and it’s just still so good! Hahaha the downside of sustainable shopping?

When I travel (anywhere), I bring a sun umbrella (lined in black inside) which I got on Amazon and a RainRap poncho which I stuff in my purse. Then I wear whatever is weather appropriate and don’t care if it’s or raining ☔️!

I have an Eddie Bauer packable raincoat in an eggplant color that seems to always work. It has a zip off hood and is great for travel. I also keep a Lands End rain/wind jacket with removable hood in my car at all times. In Florida there are lots of pop-ups and it is always there for me to grab. Its not really packable but is a cheerful yellow color so I won’t mind the rain too much. I don’t care for umbrellas. I will undoubtedly forget it somewhere and I never found them as effective as hoods for staying dry. If rain comes up, your head is covered with the flick of your hood. Plus your hands are free. I have one dress length raincoat without a hood and I rarely wear it. You featured some lovely raincoats today! So tempting!

I have a rain jacket and a longer rain coat from Travelsmith, when they used to make the great one with a hood and two-way zipper. They are both still in wonderful shape, but I think they could use water-proofing. Has anyone ever had that done on a coat at the cleaners? I never have and wonder if that works at all. The rain jacket is slightly shiny but I love its eggplant color and don’t want to give it up, but if it rains hard which it rarely does in Seattle (more drizzle here), my shoulders feel a little damp. I will be grateful to hear anything in regard to my question.

I have the LL Bean H2Off in two lengths, jacket length and mid-thigh. I loved the first one, but got the second to cover longer tunics. I’ve worn both of them in heavy rain and they are truly waterproof. They have all the features you could wish for, including a wonderful two-way zipper that never sticks. If I could think of any excuse to buy a third, I would!

Thanks for the round up. I like that the coats you featured do not have prominent logos showing. It’s just a no for me. Nice to see the LL Bean jacket everyone is recommending does not have their logo prominently displayed (so many of their items do).

Anyone remember the athletic line Lucy? I have one of their packables that is clean, simple, and works in actual rain!

When I travel I take a lightweight raincoat from CCC in champagne color. Good only for light rain, so always bring a travel umbrella. It does allow for layers under and was a great coat when I lived in San Francisco. Currently thinking about an upgrade to a more waterproof coat for travel to South America this year. I appreciate your suggestions and may order the Eddie Bauer to try at home.

While I agree with all your points, I’d like to add one more. The coat needs to be waterproof, not just water resistant. Bonus points for taped seams. A water resistant coat can’t stand up to an all day rain. You’ll end up a soggy mess and back at your hotel room. What a waste of vacation time! It’s better to pay a little more for a true waterproof coat.

Rug Up: 10 Essential Tips To Keep Winter Travellers Warm

Cold climes make for fun times, but can be a real drag if you’re ill-prepared. Here’s 10 tips to getting ready for a winter holiday.

  • Wear layers not a bear suit
  • Fly in your bulkiest clothes
  • Water proof raincoat
  • Weather apps
  • Surviving hypothermia

10. Surviving hypothermia

  • Slurred speech, mumbling
  • Shallow and slow breathing
  • Weak pulse
  • Loss of coordination muscle control
  • Drowsiness or lethargy
  • Confusion or memory loss
  • Unconsciousness
  • Bright red, cold skin (in small children)

What to do:

  • If you detect any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately. And follow these first-aid guidelines until help arrives:
  • Move the person away from the cold and wind if possible.
  • Handle them gently if they need assistance. Be gentle, and avoid vigorous movements or massaging or rubbing the person as these can trigger cardiac arrest.
  • Remove their wet clothing and use blankets or dry jackets to warm them, covering as much of the body and head as possible (leaving their face exposed). If you’re outside, ensure there is a dry layer between their body and the ground.
  • Monitor the person’s breathing and pulse. If their breathing stops, begin CPR if you’re trained.
  • If the person is alert enough to be able to swallow, hot non-caffeine drinks will also help them warm up. But don’t give them alcohol, as this actually makes them worse.

The top 5 things to look for when buying a raincoat

The top 5 things to look for when buying a raincoat

Top 5 things to look for when shopping for or buying a raincoat or rain jacket or waterproof coat

So, with all this rain we're having, you've decided to take the plunge and buy a raincoat. But which one do you buy? What are some of the things you need to look out for before choosing one? We've compiled this handy check list of 5 raincoat must-haves for you to use when sussing out the options.

1. Waterproof fabric

Scribbler waterproof fabric, DWR, seam sealed rainwear, rain jackets, rain coats

Brands that use waterproof fabrics will generally tell you that they have used them in the manufacturing process  and should tell you to what level they are waterproof. They will want to let you know they have used a high quality waterproof fabric, because it's cost them a lot more than a shower-proof or water repellent fabric would, and they want you know that this is partly why their product will cost more. Waterproof fabrics differ from water repellent fabrics - a waterproof fabric has been tested in a laboratory using the hydrostatic head or water column test which looks at how tall a column of water (measured in mm) a fabric can hold before water starts to seep through it. Water repellent fabrics will have a coating to repel water (you might see it bead off your fabric) but this will last only a few washes before it stops being effective, and will need to be re-applied. In general, a fabric is considered waterproof if it can resist 3000 mm of water from leaking through during the hydrostatic head test. Fabrics can increase in waterproof levels up to 20 000 mm however, some critics have said that anything more than 10 000 mm can then interfere with the  breathability of the fabric. But more about that later... All Scribbler's coats are waterproof to 10000 mm. We don't go higher than this, as we don't want breathability to be compromised.

2. Sealed seams

You might have a coat that says it is waterproof up to 20 000 mm however, it could still leak if the seams haven't been sealed in some way. Sewn seams are an area of weakness where water will find a way to get through, leaving you wet under even a very high spec fabric. This is why sealing all seams with a special waterproof tape, internally after they have been sewn is crucial. If your raincoat isn't fully seam sealed then it is not entirely waterproof, and you could still get wet through the seams in a strong downpour. All Scribbler's lightweight coats  are fully seam sealed, making them truly waterproof.

3. A good hood

So the heavens have opened and you've got your raincoat on - the next key element is a good hood to pull over your head. But what makes one hood better than another?

Scribbler hood, waterproof rain coat, waterproof rain jacket for women, NZ design

In a rainstorm there is generally some wind, or you might need to run for cover, so in order to stop the hood from blowing off your head - a way to adjust it is key. Toggles that you can quickly pull on to tighten the hood around your face is something you don't think about until you are in that downpour! Having a small and adjustable peak on the front is also a big plus as this shelters your eyes allowing you to see in front of you - have you ever tried running in the rain and wind before? The peak can also help protect glasses or make-up from streaming too! :) Having some adjustment at the back of the head also improves fit as not everyone's heads are the same size!

Scribbler waterproof rainwear for women, hood, adjustable hood, adjustable peak

At Scribbler, all our hoods on fleece bonded  (not including Luxe) and lightweight coats are 3-way adjustable so that you are well taken care of in a storm!

4. Breathability

So, you've got the waterproof, seam sealed, hooded rain coat on, and you start walking fast/running to get to cover/home as soon as you can, but your raincoat is rubberised or is not breathable and now you are sweating and it feels like you are in your very own sauna! A breathable fabric is another key element that many people forget about. They know they need to keep the rain off, but they forget they also need to let the water vapour and perspiration that we all create, out! The breathability of a fabric indicates how well the fabric can absorb moisture and release it. This is measured in mvp - moisture vapour perspiration. The more breathable a fabric, the more warmth that will be lost too, so you need to decide what you will be using your raincoat for most of the time. For example, Scribbler's fleece bonded coats have a purposefully lower breathability rating of 800 mvp as these coats are built for warmth as well as being waterproof, however, our lightweight waterproof rain jackets  have a much higher rating of breathability of around 5000 mvp - meaning these are perfect for layering (if you want warmth) but will be really good at moderating body temperature while you are out walking/hiking or doing other forms of mild exercise.

The length of a raincoat/rain jacket is also something to bear in mind, as wherever the raincoat covers, you will be dry but wherever it doesn't cover will get wet! A bit of a longer length at the back is always good - especially if you will be bending down, working in the garden or picking up or buckling in kids. A longer length helps with better coverage from the rain, however, too long can restrict movement and be a tripping hazard. This again, depends on what you will be using the coat for most of the time. Scribbler's ladies coats all have a longer length back for that little bit of extra coverage and we have just released our first trench coat . This coat means serious (but very beautiful) waterproof business.

These are our top 5 features to consider when buying a good, dependable waterproof raincoat or rain jacket. If you'd like to see more of Scribbler's beautifully designed rainwear, you can see more here . We even have rainwear for dogs that you can match with! We use the same fabrics and finishes on our Scribbler Pets range. See more here .

Hiking in the Rain: How to Deal with and Enjoy it!

12/10/2020 by Kristin Addis Leave a Comment

How to deal with hiking in the rain and enjoy it. Click to see what are the 3 important things you need to know to be able to stay safe and enjoy hiking in the rain. Get insider tips from an avid hiker with years of solo hiking experience! #HikingTips

I know what you’re thinking, who in their right mind would want to go hiking in the rain?

What’s to like? It’s muddy, cold, and wet!

I would tend to agree with you, my friend, I don’t particularly enjoy hiking, and especially camping and backpacking, in the rain. I would go as far to say it sucks.

But do you know what the problem is with our perspective? Our attitude! Because you and I both know that no matter how great a forecast looks, the mountains can create their own weather and if you backpack and hike enough, getting caught in the rain is a guarantee.

So what can we do about this matter? It seems the best case scenario is we are well prepared for it, know that it’s coming, and try to find ways to enjoy it.

Table of Contents

Rain Gear Preparedness

santa cruz trek

The key to finding ways to enjoy your hike even if it’s raining lies in remaining warm and dry.

So to Gore-Tex or not to Gore-Tex?

I’ve been rained on, and snowed on, on several of my long-term backpacking trips and although I always have a lightweight pair of rain pants with me, I rarely put them on. I always wear the same pair of thick, quick dry l ululemon leggings on cold-weather hikes, and when it’s warm I wear much thinner, quick dry leggings as well .

torres del paine o circuit

The thing is, while Gore-Tex creates a nice rainproof jacket and pant combo, it’s so good at sealing everything out, it seals everything in as well and makes you sweat. So to me it seems like an expensive way to still be wet at the end.

It’s still good to have a pair of rain pants handy in case it’s sideways rain and you can’t get dry, but if you pick the right leggings that are thick and quick dry, they can be a great option, too.

True winter hiking is different, and I have more to say about that here , but for now I’m talking about above-freezing rain, which I’ve encountered on most multi-day mountain hikes, even in the summertime.

prepare to travel in a decent raincoat

On top I tend to wear a thermal base layer followed by ski jackets if it is a hike somewhere very cold like Patagonia or Alaska, since they are designed to be waterproof and provide great wind protection. Otherwise, I travel with a waterproof shell from REI that I can throw on over other layers. I really believe in buying quality gear over cheap gear, as it’s actually much cheaper in the long run (and better for the planet, too). You only need one good rain jacket, and why buy it more frequently than once every 10 years? That’s how I feel, anyway.

Bag covering and waterproofing

Finally, your bag. If you’re going to use a rain jacket, get one of those with several points of connection going around each of your hip straps, the middle, and the top. But I like to take it a step further by lining my backpack with a bin liner and individually wrapping up my electronics in plastic shopping bags (I don’t know about you, but shopping during Covid meant a lot of plastic bags ?).

But I’m always recycling and reusing these bags and recommend that you do, too.

With all of those things taken into account, plus good, waterproof hiking boots , and waterproof gloves if it’s cold ( these are by far the best I’ve found after testing many), I don’t have to be uncomfortable when hiking in the rain. The water mostly rolls off me and all of my gear stays dry, so while annoying, it’s no longer uncomfortable.

The Mud Situation

Laugavegur trail

“But what about mud?” I hear you thinking.

It’s true, mud can ruin a hike, or slick rocks can stop it before it even starts. First, I would make sure you’ve read up on the trail or backpacking route you’ve selected, which is a good idea before every major hike.

For example in Milford sound in New Zealand , I knew not to attempt the hike if it were rainy due to the slick rocks. But in Patagonia it rains so often that I just plan on mud and prepare by having waterproof boots, as mentioned above, as well as walking sticks, which I find help tremendously with weight distribution, helping my knees, and balance with mud or bad weather.

I had the same ones for almost 6 years now, and definitely recommend investing in some! I don’t care if they are nerdy, they work!

patagonia trekking tips

If the trail really is impassable, select a different one if possible, or wait it out until it’s a bit less muddy and rainy.

All that said, it’s rare that the rain truly makes the trail so impassible that you can’t hike it. But please do be careful not to wander off of the trail, creating social trails due to the mud. This creates erosion that overtime, can wear down vulnerable landscapes and make recovery almost impossible. This is the issue right now in Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia . Get waterproof boots in power through!

The Camera Situation

torres del paine circuit

There’s actually much to look forward to in the photography department when you’re dealing with rain. The sunsets or sunrises after the rain clears are just that much more stunning and dramatic. Plus, there is the possibility of rainbows!

My camera can handle a tiny bit of moisture, so I’ll sometimes use the shower caps that come for free in hotel rooms, and secure them around the camera with a hair tie. but if it really starts to rain I put it away, safe and sound, always willing to take it back out at a moment’s notice if the moment is right.

The verdict: can it be fun?

How to deal with + enjoy hiking in the rain: 3 important things to know! Learn how to prepare for wet weather condition while hiking, the best hiking rain gear, and how to keep your photography equipment safe and dry. #HikingTips

Dude, yeah!

Enjoying the outdoors often means the weather that comes with it. That might be wind, rain, snow, and darkness, but when it comes down to it, you get to be in beautiful places, to enjoy nature, and that often means accepting all of it.
