Klook expects strong PH tourism growth in 2024

klook travel technology philippines

Travel platform Klook expects strong tourism growth in the Philippines this year.

“Over the past couple of years, we’ve been ramping up on our efforts to help boost domestic tourism and in 2024, we plan to do this more aggressively. The Philippines is home to some of the most desirable destinations in the region, and we’d like to play a bigger role in encouraging more Filipinos to discover joy within our home country,” said Klook general manager for the Philippines and Thailand Michelle Ho in a briefing Tuesday.

Klook’s “stay” offering is aligned with the traveling public’s preference for staycations and more accessible and affordable accommodations, Ho said.

Domestic tourism is more popular among Filipinos with 92 percent of the survey respondents already having plans to travel domestically in 2024, according to Klook Travel Pulse, a study conducted by the company based on survey results and data gathered from its platform.

The study showed that 76 percent of the respondents disclosed travel plans in 2024. Those who traveled in 2023 and early 2024 visited Tagaytay, Baguio, Batangas, Boracay and Palawan.

Klook’s findings also indicated the Filipinos’ preferences for having road trips with friend groups of three to six people.

Klook said it is also strengthening music and sports tourism to take advantage of some major global events like the Olympic Games 2024 to be held in Paris and the World Expo Osaka in 2025.

The app reported that in 2023, bookings tripled with the average basket size having increased by 21 percent.

“2023 was definitely a great year for tourism recovery, and this growth mirrors a collective yearning to explore and gain new experiences. We’re happy to see that Filipinos have fully embraced the joy of traveling again, and we’re honored to be a partner in making their dream vacations a reality,” Ho said.

Klook aims to empower more local businesses and tour operators by giving them the opportunity to increase the exposure of and expand the markets for their tourism products and services within the platform.

Klook Taps Rise in Domestic Travel for Growth in Experience Bookings

Sean O'Neill , Skift

December 14th, 2021 at 2:30 AM EST

Klook has adapted seemingly well to the pandemic by switching its focus from international inbound travelers to domestic consumers. But along the way, it attracted a new set of commercial rivals. It must stay vigilant.

Sean O'Neill

Travel startup Klook expanded rapidly in the tours-and-activities market until 2020. But the pandemic dried up its key source market of international travelers looking for things to do in destinations worldwide.

“More than 90 percent of our revenue had been coming from cross-border travel,” said Eric Gnock Fah, a co-founder of the company. “But today it’s 100 percent domestic.”

Fah said the Hong Kong-headquartered startup no longer makes most of its revenue from classic day tour products, such as guided walking tours. It introduced products such as “staycations,” which match a hotel stay with a restaurant meal, spa visit, or nearby attraction. The company also expanded its mobility options from intercity train reservations to car rental, particularly in South Korea, Taiwan, and Australia.

Earlier this year, Klook raised $200 million , and it used some of that capital to pivot to become more of an all-purpose online travel agency for primarily domestic travel. The startup has raised more than $720 million since its founding in 2014, and it vies with Berlin-based GetYourGuide as the most heftily funded startup in the experiences category.

We spoke with Fah to learn how the company had to change its inventory, use its enterprise software tools as a wedge to gain share, and partner with — rather than compete against — some of its rivals such as the superapp Grab .

Revenue Gains

As a private company, Klook doesn’t share financial details. But Fah said the early signs were positive.

“In many key markets, meaning the likes of Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and to some extent Singapore, things have been faring quite well,” Fah said. “The domestic revenue has exceeded even the pre-Covid level of the inbound/outbound travel revenue, and in some cases, we’re actually even doing like 50 percent more than before.”

The crisis has required the company to add inventory in categories such as spa treatments, vacation homes, and car rentals. But the domestic travel sector hadn’t been digitized, particularly around the acceptance of online bookings and payments.

By getting an early lead in helping digitize this domestic travel content, Klook hopes it will retain it as a strong domestic segment even after the re-opening of international travel likely causes the company to reshift its focus back to international travelers and the types of experiences they prefer.

Partnership With Grab

Before the pandemic, Klook mainly faced competition from GetYourGuide, TripAdvisor-owned Viator , Booking.com , Expedia , and Trip.com . Today it faces an array of companies trying to add domestic travel experiences to their e-commerce offerings. Players include fast-growing travel tech player and lodging operator Yanolja, Taiwan-based KKday, AirAsia’s digital app, Tencent’s WeChat, and Meituan.

Klook argues that adding supply and making it digitally bookable and serviceable in a seamless way is a difficult operation that some other players, such as food delivery services seeking to add travel as a new segment, may underestimate.

Grab, the ride-hailing platform giant in Asia, seems to have recognized that problem. Singapore-based Grab has partnered with Klook to plug in the missing inventory on its platform.

“We’ve basically plugged in our inventory so that any consumer on Grab can book an activity,” Fah said.

Leading in Taiwan

When Klook faces local competitors, it tries to get an edge by having a more seamless experience. For instance, it works with local attractions providers, such as an aquarium, to help the venue digitize their abilities to accept bookings and payments and serve guests. When Klook sells tickets, it often can offer same-day confirmed bookings via a mobile app. Other rivals often struggle to match that convenience because of the lack of a connection to the new enterprise software used by the attractions.

In Taiwan, during the peak late summer travel season after covid-related restrictions were eased, Klook claims its market share was double the next largest local player’s. Fah said officials in Taiwan pushed attractions vendors to digitize in an act of pandemic preparedness. Klook happened to have an enterprise software system that many vendors picked. An upgrade version of Klook’s system offered optional point-of-sale devices and electronic gates, similar to turnstiles, through partnerships with hardware vendors.

Over time, the attractions will become fully omnichannel and be able to take all types of bookings for all types of brands. But for now, Klook can have an early edge.

Klook also earned popularity for its business-to-business solution by expanding a product for making intercity buses and trains bookable online.

“This was a very offline segment in Taiwan,” Fah said. “We built a customized system to enable vendors to achieve real-time availability of not only bus schedules but also seating. We’re going to push this into Korea and elsewhere in Southeast Asia as well.”

Shifting Fortunes in Korea and Hong Kong

In South Korea, Klook appears to be a bit more on the backfoot.

“Yanolja has raised a lot of money and in some ways is flashing a lot of cash in the market,” Fah said. “So we’re being a bit more careful in our spending in Korea. But we’re optimistic long-term partly because the vaccination rate is quite high and we’re optimistic about when international travel resumes.”

In Hong Kong, Klook is optimistic about a government initiative launched in late November. The government is handing vouchers worth about $640 ($5,000 Hong Kong dollars) to stimulate local consumption. The products Klook offers are valid uses, so the brand hopes to get its share of the stimulus spending.

Worldwide, Klook has slashed its budget for paid search advertising, focusing instead on content and social marketing. That’s because, when it comes to seeking inspiration for domestic experiences, many consumers are finding inspiration via non-search routes, such as visual-based social media. Klook emphasizes marketing in these channels.

More From Skift

Prepping for the international rebound.

Fah argued that Klook is better than other online travel agencies at “creating” demand, or inspiring people to consider booking, say, a staycation with a spa experience when they hadn’t been thinking about it or searching for it. Other online travel agencies have been built to “capture” demand that already exists, using methods like paid search ads and TV advertising, but they’re not good at inspiring interest in new products or product bundles, Fah said.

For operators in the experiences segment, Klook has also had its engineers focus on a long-time pain point of “channel management.”

“We now provide a robust channel management tool for our partners connecting not only, of course, the international markets through the global OTAs [online travel agencies] but also the large e-commerce players such as Grab or even non-traditional players such as Japan Airlines,” Fah said. “We help experience operators distribute their inventory to more channels.”

Klook handles all customer service problems with agents at its subsidiaries and offices across the Asia Pacific. But it is working on enabling consumers and merchants to connect directly to resolve issues more speedily when partners agree to participate.

The innovations that can please a consumer long-term can be a danger to short-term profit. Klook seems to have cleverly navigated the shoals of the pandemic by changing the products it sells and its marketing strategy. But fat profit margins may have to wait until the pandemic ends. The company’s executives didn’t volunteer financial details.

Looking ahead, one of Klook’s investors, EDBI, a Singapore-based global investor , is working with Klook to grow the startup’s corporate service team for departments such as legal, human resources, and research and development, in Singapore.

Klook has been well funded. But a further capital injection from EDBI and other investors may eventually be needed if the pandemic continues to dampen the international tourist travel that provided Klook and its rivals with their highest-margin sales.

With $900 Million In Total Funding, Klook Targets Asia’s Travel-Obsessed Millennials And Gen Z

Hong kong-based travel superapp klook is harnessing influencer marketing and generative ai to tap into the wanderlust of social media-savvy adults and southeast asia’s rising middle class..

As younger, chronically online generations embrace traveling for leisure and consumers in Southeast Asia become wealthier, the decade-old online travel agency Klook–cofounded by Eric Gnock Fah , an honoree of the 2017 Forbes Asia 30 under 30 list–secured $210 million in a recent Series E+ funding round.

With an average user age of 27 to 35, Klook has become the “go-to travel brand” for millennials and Gen Z across Asia, says Ethan Lin, cofounder and CEO of Klook, in an interview from the company’s office in Hong Kong. “We are their first touch point when they're going out,” he says.

To fuel its expansion, Klook announced in December it raised $210 million in a Series E+ round led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with participation from billionaire Jean Salata’s EQT Private Capital Asia and Atinum Investment, a backer of billionaire Seo Jung-jin’s Celltrion. Also participating were prominent Southeast Asian firms, including Krungsri Finnovate, the fintech arm of Thailand’s Bank of Ayudhya; SMIC SG Holdings, controlled by the billionaire Sy siblings in the Philippines; Shanghai-based Golden Vision Capital, founded by Jackson Wijaya of the Indonesian billionaire family behind Sinar Mars; and Kasikornbank Financial Conglomerate, controlled by Thai billionaire Banthoon Lamsam and his family.

“People need a place to go and find out what to do in life, and that's what our brand recall is.” Ethan Lin, cofounder and CEO at Klook

The Series E+ round, which included bank facilities from Citi, JPMorgan and HSBC, brought Klook’s total funding raised to over $900 million. Klook declined to disclose its latest valuation and whether it plans to IPO, but claims its revenue tripled compared to 2019, and it became profitable for the first time in 2023. Previously, in 2018, Klook became one of Hong Kong’s rare startup unicorns, on the back of a $200 million funding round that valued Klook at over $1 billion.

“Asia is one of the largest experience travel markets globally,” Bryan Wu, partner at Bessemer Venture Partners, wrote in an email statement. “Once online booking penetration continues to rise, Klook as the category leader is best positioned to grow and become a strong next-generation travel platform.”

The Series E+ capital will go towards product innovation, social and digital marketing, and integrating generative AI across its website and app. Klook says it will use Google Cloud’s AI capabilities to automate translations for 10 languages, enhance its customer service chatbot K.Ai, and generate written content, such as short-form descriptions for activities.

A tour guide scans a QR code on a tourist's smartphone during a guided walking tourm hosted by Klook in Hong Kong.

Klook, short for “keep looking,” allows its users to book activities, tours and transportation. Cofounded in 2014 by Fah, Lin and CTO Bernie Xiaokang Xiong, Klook currently offers over 530,000 activities, or experiences–a fivefold increase from 2019, when it offered over 100,000–in 2,700 destinations globally.

“People need a place to go and find out what to do in life, and that's what our brand recall is,” says Lin. “Just like how people remember Airbnb for alternative accommodation, for us, it’s when people think about what to do when they leave their homes.”

To the CEO, one of Klook’s competitive advantages is its wide range of activities, from massages to bungee jumping, and “exclusive benefits” that stem from partnerships. For example, last year, Klook partnered with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) to sell diving equipment and certification courses, and the travel platform was the sole ticketer of billionaire Taylor Swift’s performance in Singapore, as part of her Eras tour.

Another advantage is Klook’s appeal to social media-savvy younger generations, its core demographic. Over 80% of millennials and Gen Z base their travel bookings on recommendations from content creators, with the most trusted recommendations from “non-celebrity figures,” according to research published in January by Klook. The company aims to expand its network of 13,000 nano and micro-influencers, or content creators on Instagram with a minimum of 1,000 followers. Dubbed Kreators, or ‘creators’ with a ‘K’, these influencers can receive commissions or sponsored trips in exchange for user-generated content.

Two tourists wearing kimonos take selfies at the Eikando Zenrin-ji Temple in Kyoto, Japan.

With key markets in Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, Klook also aims to tap into more markets across Southeast Asia, where a burgeoning middle class has deeper pockets for new experiences. Online travel–spanning flights, hotels and vacation rentals–is one of five leading pillars of Southeast Asia’s digital economy, according to a December report jointly prepared by Google, Temasek and Bain. Travel and transport are on track to exceed pre-pandemic heights in 2024, with further headroom for growth among Klook and other online travel agencies (OTAs), the report added.

As more consumers book their travels online, customer loyalty is becoming an important issue for OTAs, according to Prudence Lai, senior analyst at Euromonitor International. Inspiring loyalty requires tailoring products to each intended audience–from the “Gen Z solo traveler” to the “millennial luxury traveler”–and providing greater levels of personalization.

“Considering the evolving fragmentation of traveler demand, hyper-personalization along the customer journey becomes a very important differentiator,” says Lai. “This also helps with loyalty in general for client retention.”

Klook faces off against other travel sites vying for the millennial and Gen Z market, such as U.S. brands like Agoda, Booking.com and Expedia. In Asia, these competitors include Shanghai-based Trip.com and Seoul-based Yanolja, billionaire Lee Su-jin’s travel superapp. Smaller startups have also entered the fray, including Seoul-based travel superapp MyRealTrip, an honoree of last year’s Forbes Asia 100 to Watch list , which raised a $56 million Series F funding round in January.

Still, to Lin, Asia’s future growth holds promise–just last year, the region was still in “year zero” out of the Covid-19 pandemic, as countries gradually lifted social distancing and travel restrictions.

“People are looking for more things to do, and I think Covid has accelerated that,” he adds. “Now, people just want to experience life.”

Klook data reveals heightened interest in Asia, domestic travel

Klook Philippines, the local subsidiary of Asia’s leading travel and experiences platform, today shared the results of the Klook Travel Pulse, a company-led study which analyzes consumer travel trends based on data gathered from app and website usage.

The study revealed that Klook users in the Philippines are inclined towards international travel to neighboring countries like Singapore, Japan, and most especially Hong Kong due to proximity and no visa requirement. In fact, month-on-month growth for Klook in relation to Hong Kong bookings shows strong recovery since the country reopened for tourism at 230% from December 2022 to January 2023, and continues with a double-digit growth for February and March.

For outbound travelers from the Philippines, the study shows that Filipinos  prefer longer travel durations with six to nine days (44%) being the most popular, followed by three to five days (40%), then 10 or more days (38%), and, lastly one to two days (15%). Additionally, the most experiences booked are Theme Parks, Watersports, and Hotels.

Locally, Klook is also seeing continued growth in uptake for domestic destinations and experiences with the most popular destinations being Boracay, Manila, Tagaytay, Cebu, Clark, and Subic.

Michelle Ho, General Manager for Klook Philippines and Thailand, noted that these promising numbers are, in a large part, propelled by the digitalization of the tourism industry. “Travel has become even more accessible to consumers now that more people are becoming digital-savvy, and we believe this digital transformation is contributing greatly to the acceleration of tourism growth in the region,” Ho shared.

Klook  helps connect local tour operators to travelers making discoverability of activities and booking easier and hassle-free. Klook has digitized operations for partners in various island destinations, offering better booking experience and payment solutions for customers.   In Boracay, overall bookings for water activities  increased by 75% in Q4 2022 with 70% of total revenue coming from domestic bookings. Manila Ocean Park and Cebu Ocean Park’s website booking systems are also powered by Klook through Flickket, enabling direct entry for customers through a seamless Mode of Payment and QR code redemption system. This skips the need for travelers to exchange tickets upon arrival at the parks, improving their overall end-to-end booking experience which led to the sales in Q4 2022 doubling compared to the previous year. Sky Ranch Tagaytay also sold over 50,000 tickets due to Klook’s instant confirmation, and open-dated calendars leading to a tripling of its monthly sales.

“We are cognizant of the contributions we are able to make in helping grow domestic tourism given our platform and user base. A lot of locals, both individuals and merchants, rely on tourism for their livelihood and we are eager to help domestic travelers discover more sources of joy in the country, and businesses to make their products and services more accessible to our users,” Ho added.

Klook enables Filipino travelers to find their own definition of joy with over 1,500 destinations and 515,000 curated experiences and activities to choose from. The company has been present in the Philippines for five years and over this time, it has amassed close to 600 experiences and activities across 21 cities in the country, ranging from accommodations, entertainment, dining, and transportation.

Klook Pulse

Klook saw a 22% increase in application downloads in February 2023 compared to the same period Pre-Covid. When it comes to bookings, the company ended 2022 with a  62% growth in bookings coming from the previous quarter,  showing that more and more Filipinos are flocking to the app to plan their next trip. By the end of 2023, Klook is expecting a 27% growth increase in monthly bookings compared to its pre-pandemic numbers.

“The Filipinos’ eagerness to travel motivates us to push for experiences that can be achieved in our own home or abroad. Digital technology is a powerful tool that can benefit the majority if done right, and we will continue to introduce platform enhancements to improve our customers’ travel experiences and make it easier to discover and book anything via Klook,” said Ho.

Klook Philippines plans to further local tourism by doubling down on its commitment to the domestic landscape. On top of this, given the success of its  previous partnerships, Klook will continue to engage with small businesses to aid in uplifting the local economy.

“We plan to reach out to and engage more local merchants, educate them of how they can take advantage of digital technology with us, and hopefully work more closely with our local tourism industry in general to help maximize the tourism prospects for the country,” added Ho.

“The Philippines is a dignified stand-alone destination in itself that both foreign and local travelers can enjoy. When we empower Filipinos and place importance on our natural wonders, we are able to lift each other up while helping our local businesses by reintroducing the beauty of the Philippines and its culture to both local and foreign tourists alike,” Ho concluded.

Klook secures $210 mil for expansion and innovation in travel tech

Klook - Co-Founders Group Photo

Klook completes a significant $210 million funding round, enhancing its digital travel offerings amid Asia’s post-COVID recovery.

SINGAPORE – Klook announced that it has successfully completed a US$210 million financing, supporting business growth and fortifying financial stability. The equity round is led by Bessemer Venture Partners , with participation from BPEA EQT , Asia investment funds Atinum Investment and Golden Vision Capital , and corporate investment arms from Southeast Asia, including Krungsri Finnovate (under Bank of Ayudhya), Kasikornbank Financial Conglomerate and SMIC SG Holdings. The round also includes bank facilities from Citi, J.P. Morgan, and HSBC.

For many Asian markets, 2023 marks the first year of travel recovery with a notable rebound in tourism figures and a gradual recovery in flight capacities. Despite this early stage in market recovery, Klook has demonstrated remarkable business success, surpassing previous milestones with a threefold increase compared to 2019 and boasting an annualized gross booking value of US$3 billion. Notably, the company also achieved overall profitability for the first time earlier this year.

Ethan Lin , CEO and Co-Founder, credits this accomplishment to the collective efforts of the team in establishing the groundwork for the post-COVID era of travel. “ During the pandemic, we doubled down on our resources in merchant digitization and the expansion of our supply network, including car rentals and outdoor experiences. This positions us strongly to capture new travel trends coming out of the pandemic ,” said Lin.

The company’s success is further underscored by its increasing brand strength, strategically building on and leveraging its app-first approach to both acquire and retain customers, with over 80% of bookings made through mobile today. Impressively, the influx of new customers acquired in 2023 more than doubled that of 2019, while repeat customers contributed to over half of the total bookings, demonstrating the sustained customer loyalty fostered by the platform.

“ Leveraging strong business fundamentals that led to significant growth in revenue and profit this year, including a threefold increase in productivity (revenue per headcount), we are set for a new phase of sustainable expansion. With Asia in the early stages of post-COVID recovery, upcoming global events like the Paris Olympics 2024 and Osaka World Expo 2025, along with rising expenditures and digital adoption, the industry outlook in Asia is exceptionally positive ,” added Lin.

The global travel industry is projected to soar to a staggering US$15.5 trillion by 20331, with Asia Pacific leading the way as the fastest-growing region. With a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% in the Asia Pacific (from 2023-2028)2, almost doubling that of North America and Europe, this dynamic region is set to capture a larger share of the global travel market, driven by a burgeoning middle class, increased consumer spending, and a growing appetite for unique experiences. Klook remains focused on catering to the increasing demand for immersive travel among Asian customers and showcasing the best of Asia to inbound travelers.

“ We are pioneering a transformative era of travel, catering to a new generation of more digitally-savvy travelers with bigger and bolder appetites for unique experiences. Our goal is to empower travelers to explore the world effortlessly through the Klook app, a one-stop platform that seamlessly connects them to a comprehensive range of in-destination services, encompassing immersive experiences and convenient ground transportation ,” shared Eric Gnock Fah , COO and Co-Founder of Klook.

Klook will strategically allocate the new funds to three key areas for growth. Firstly, in product innovation, expanding its city pass offerings to enhance traveler convenience and savings. Secondly, by scaling social and digital marketing through the Klook Kreator program, driving conversions with authentic, social, user-generated content. Thirdly, by advancing innovation through continuous AI integration. The recent collaboration with Google Cloud will integrate Generative AI across the platform, covering automated translations, content generation, and customer service chatbot. The company will also collaborate with the new strategic investors in the region, to increase market share and boost growth, tapping into the fast-growing middle class in Southeast Asia.

Klook’s study reveals top travel trends in the Philippines

Team Orange

  • Rising costs of travel, and catching Covid-19 while on holiday are among the top concerns of travelers in Asia.
  • Over 80% of travelers in Asia are intending to travel in 2023 and plan to spend the same if not more on travel as compared to 2022, despite the looming global recession.

If the economic uncertainties are making you worried or anxious about your holiday plans for 2023, you’re not alone. Almost 4 in 5 travelers in Asia are anxious about traveling next year (2023), according to a new study by Klook .

However, concerns about inflation and rising costs are not stopping travelers from packing their bags. An overwhelming majority (81%) are eager to travel internationally in the new year, with one-third planning to take at least 2 to 4 trips. From the study, 79% of Filipinos are worried about travel given economic uncertainties, but even so, almost all (87%) are still eager to travel, with 17% already booked for a holiday trip in 2023.

Which concerns travelers more: catching Covid-19 or the rising costs of travel?

A whopping 63% of travelers in Asia are worried about the increasing price tags associated with travel. However, the desire to travel appears to be even stronger, with more than 80% planning to spend the same or more on travel. Among the respondents, Malaysia (71%), Singapore (70%), and Japan (68%) travelers ranked the highest for cost as a concern. However, Filipinos are among the most excited to travel despite their worries, with 75% intending to spend the same if not more on travel in 2023. Beyond the rising cost of travel, concerns around Covid-19 still remain, with 39% Asians worried about catching the virus while on holiday.

Vacation all the way, no matter the obstacles

Despite feeling anxious about travel in the face of a looming global recession, travelers in Asia are not giving up on their travel plans just yet. 35% will opt for a nearer destination or travel during off-peak seasons, while 34% are willing to cut back on other expenses in order to save more for travel.

To allay concerns, half of travelers aim to plan their itinerary ahead of time to maximize the experiences during their trips. For those who are more conscious of health and safety, 43% will ensure that they purchase travel insurance, and 35% will look to explore less crowded places within their destinations to minimize risk and exposure.

Is 2023 the Year of ‘Travesillience’?

Marcus Yong , Vice President, Global Marketing at Klook , predicts that in 2023, travelers will remain resilient against all odds. He says, “ After two years of being grounded, travel is now an experience that people treasure more than ever before, and this is clear from our survey data. Although travel behavior and attitudes have evolved in the past few years, we still see that travelers are ready to adapt and determined to travel no matter what it takes in search of the joys and rewards of travel. ”

“ 2023 is the Year of Travelsilience (travel and resilience), where travelers pursue travel to create new memorable experiences, despite all struggles and any headwinds .”

With Klook, travelers have the world at their fingertips. From popular attractions to cozy lesser-known activities, there is a wide range of experiences for travelers to dive into and discover joy during their trips. In 2022, Klook delivered over 108 million hours of joy through experiences booked via its app and website.

Michelle Ho, General Manager, Philippines at Klook adds, “ The enthusiasm Filipinos have for travel empowers us to continue providing them unforgettable experiences and pushes us to further expand the variety of travel offerings available in our platform in order to cater to the traveler’s demands .”

Across Asia, a common thread of discovery and family-centric activities take center stage. Usual suspects such as Museums, Theme Parks and Zoos & Animal Parks lead the way for the top experiences in Asia. Additionally, there has also been strong demand for car rentals and outdoor experiences such as Walking Tours and Trekking – suggesting that travelers are going beyond metropolitan areas and exploring areas beyond the city.

Key Survey Highlights – Philippines

  • About 4 in 5 travelers in Asia are anxious about traveling internationally in 2023 given economic uncertainties.
  • 79% of travelers in the Philippines are anxious about traveling internationally in 2023 given economic uncertainties.
  • A large majority (83%) are eager to travel internationally again in 2023 (vs 17% who are not eager at all).

Complete Your Travel Essentials

How we chose and ranked our recommendations, benefits of using travel apps.

Travel apps are designed to assist you before, during, and after your trips . They provide all your travel needs such as location details, booking cost, mode of transportation, transportation costs, and local experiences.

Gone are the days when you have to bring many papers during your trip, instead, travel apps offer the convenience of using digital tickets . The best part about travel apps is that you can make all your bookings in one go . Apps are also competitive so expect yourself different deals and discounts.

There are also a lot of tour packages to choose from based on your travel purposes and preferences. You need not worry about payment procedures too because most apps offer an online mode of payment .

How to Choose a Travel App - Buying Guide

Scrolling through different apps on your device can take a lot of time. Lessen your burden with this simple rundown of what you need to consider in choosing a trusted travel app.

Consider the Interface and Ease of Use

The interface of an app is the first thing that you notice. That is why it makes sense that this should also be the first thing you have to look into when choosing which app to download. It should be appealing enough without sacrificing functionality .

There should be a search function that provides its users information about attractions, events, activities, local experiences, and sightseeing spots. Aside from this, it should also allow you to filter data according to your interests .

A handy app should have an easy navigation bar . It should lead you to the travel app’s essential parts, such as booking information, destination details, and user reviews & experiences. Each section and category should be easily found.

Check the Compatibility With Your Device

Despite how appealing the app may look to you, it will be useless if you can’t use it properly because of incompatibility. Check if it works with your device’s operating system . As the best measure, opt for apps that are compatible with both Android and Apple devices. This allows easy access and syncing of data across any of your gadgets.

Included in checking the compatibility of the app is knowing how much storage it needs . Some apps may be heavy on space, especially those that offer a lot of features. You may experience many crashes while using the app if it is not optimal for your device’s storage.

Look Into the App Requirements

Due to its high functionality, travel apps require a lot from your smartphone or other devices. It is best to look into the app requirements such as internet connection and GPS from its users to get the best of its features.

Offline Apps Can Be Used Anytime, Anywhere

When you go on travels, you may not be online all the time. You may want to savor all the scenery, take it all in and create memories. Moreover, the cost of roaming and data services is just not practical .  It helps to get travel apps that work even without data or an internet connection. This way, you can also get the most out of your travel app without consuming much battery life .

Precise Geolocation Tracking Makes for a Secure Trip

Most travel apps require a Global Positioning System or GPS. This allows the app to determine where you are in order to guide you in reaching your desired destination. GPS makes traveling in an unknown location more accessible and more secure . Go for apps with precise GPS tracking to ensure you won’t get lost during your travel.

Aside from guiding you to your destination, GPS is also beneficial in the weather forecast. Once you’ve finalized your location and destination, the travel app can provide you with a prediction of what the weather would be on your scheduled date. This makes for a smooth sailing trip. You do not want your plans to be dampened by sudden rain.

Think About the Cost

Like most apps, you may need to pay to enjoy all the features of a travel app . Of course, this doesn’t mean you should pay immediately just to use the app. If you’re not yet ready to spend your hard-earned money, you can make use of free trials.

Free trials may last from 7 days to 1 month. Take advantage of it before fully committing . Try to gauge whether the app is suitable for you based on your preferences and travel goals. This way, you won’t end up wasting your money on an app that doesn’t work for you.

Save Up With Coupons

The perfect trip need not break the banks, especially with the use of travel apps. As part of their promotion, most travel apps offer discounts on booking, accommodation , or any of your travel needs. Some apps offer discounts for first-time users. You may also get vouchers when you either subscribe to their newsletter or refer a friend .

For frequent travelers, watch out for these deals. You can take advantage of the coupons and points given by the app. Some employ a credit system wherein whenever you book or purchase a service, you will be rewarded credits. You can then exchange your accumulated credits for a certain item like a discount or free voucher.

Go Through User Ratings

When in doubt, check the user ratings. These are readily available in the app description . You can go through the different experiences that users had while they were using the app. Use their assessment as your tool to determine whether the app will be good for you .

Aside from the ratings, you can also check the number of times the app was downloaded. Usually, a high number of downloads means that the app does its job. However, this might not always be the case, as some users might have downloaded it only to remove it immediately. So be sure to check the reviews for that.

Filipinos were ready for it: PH top buyer of Taylor Swift tour tickets in Klook

TAYLOR SWIFT. The popstar during the Argentina stop of her 'The Eras' concert tour.

MANILA, Philippines – If you felt that half of the Philippines flew into Singapore to see Taylor Swift, you might actually be onto something.

Data from travel and experience app Klook showed that Filipinos were the top buyers globally of Klook ticket bundles for Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” in Singapore, accounting for somewhere between 10% to 15% of the ticket bundles sold. In comparison, the percentage of sales from other ASEAN countries was only in the single digits per market.

“Philippines was a big chunk of that,” Michelle Ho, general manager of Klook Philippines and Thailand, said. “ Malakas si Taylor Swift sa Pilipinas (Taylor Swift has a strong presence here in the Philippines).”

Klook told Rappler that at one point, over 10 million users entered their queue in the span of one second. And Klook’s infrastructure held up – something that not all platform can say. (READ: ‘Unprecedented’ demand for Taylor Swift tour crashes Ticketmaster website )

“That’s not normal. It’s not even normal not to crash when the spike is that high,” Ho told Rappler. “What was a success for us was even as a newbie in the entertainment scene, our app did not crash. We could hold a number of people on queue, and people were able to successfully book tickets on the app.”

It also looks like Taylor Swift was able to beat inflation as hundreds of thousands flocked to Singapore – her only stop in Southeast Asia – despite the pricey tickets. For instance, the cheapest Klook ticket bundle , which comes with two concert tickets and a room night in a 4-star hotel, reached $542 or almost P30,000.

“For a price point as high as that, sometimes you would think that demand will be very much affected. But that’s not true. We sold out in less than six hours,” Ho said on Tuesday, March 12. “People these days are willing to travel for new experiences, for experiences that they want to share with their loved ones.”

Revenge travel ‘still very much alive’

Looking at the overall tourism landscape, Ho also noted that 2023 was a “great year for tourism recovery.” In the past year, Klook’s bookings tripled while its gross sales figures grew by four times between 2022 and 2023.

Filipinos also seem to be spending more on travel, as the average basket size of consumers grew by 21% based on Klook’s 2024 Travel Pulse study. For international travel, most Filipinos have a budget ranging from P15,000 to P50,000 for their overall spending. For local destinations, the average Filipino’s budget ranges from P15,000 to P30,000 for a four to six day trip.

“One could argue that: is this only about price increases, interest rates going up? But we’ve seen a double-digit growth, above 21%,” Ho said. “So it’s not really that the travel budget has gone down. But it’s really more about being intentional of what they’ve purchased.”

Filipinos who traveled internationally in 2023 and early 2024 usually visited nearby destinations, the most popular ones being Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand. Locally, the most visited destinations by Klook users were Tagaytay, Baguio, Batangas, Boracay, and Palawan.

Ho said that the results of their study showed revenge travel was “still very much alive,” with 92% of survey respondents saying they have plans to travel domestically in 2024 and 76% saying they have plans to travel internationally this year.

“People are traveling more. People are not choosing between domestic or international. They’re going for both if they can.” – Rappler.com

Hotel group sees 80% occupancy during Holy Week

klook travel technology philippines

The Philippine Hotel Owners Association Inc. (PHOA) anticipates an 80% occupancy rate during this year’s Holy Week, driven by increased travel to beach destinations.

“Last-minute bookings, especially from Thursday to Saturday, may also drive demand for city hotels, particularly from the staycation market,” PHOA Executive Director Benito C. Bengzon Jr. told BusinessWorld on Tuesday.  PHOA is a non-profit organization with 206 hotel members nationwide.

He attributed the increased bookings to travelers taking advantage of discounts and promotions offered during the break.

Some prefer staying in a three-star hotel with a pool as a cheaper option, he said.

According to the latest consumer trends study led by the travel platform Klook, domestic travel is projected to reach 92% this year. Tagaytay, Baguio, Boracay, and Palawan are the preferred domestic travel spots.

Filipinos, or “balikbayans,” travel in large groups since it is cheaper and helps to reduce booking expenses. PHOA said its members’ guests are mostly families with kids and young adults.

Similarly, Klook found that Filipinos preferred traveling in large groups of three to six people.

Despite the hotel group’s optimism for tourism recovery, it said booking and revenue figures are far from their pre-pandemic levels.

He cited the recorded foreign arrivals of 5.5 million in 2023, according to the Department of Tourism (DoT), which is below the 8.2 million international visitors in 2019.

The Philippine Statistics Authority saw 102 million domestic trips from 2022 to mid-2023, with P1.5 trillion in domestic tourism expenditure.

As of March 1, the DoT has recorded 1.2 million total visitor arrivals this year.

According to Mr. Bengzon, guests can expect higher rates this year due to inflation.

“Despite the increased costs of labor, utilities, and direct expenses, the hotel aims to maintain accessibility for its customers, especially for leisure travelers during peak seasons, such as Holy Week,” he said.

PHOA has also observed that guests prefer booking through digital travel platforms such as Agoda and Booking.com, and their stays typically span two to three days . — Aubrey Rose A. Inosante
