Under normal circumstances, Delta’s change/cancellation fees are some of the most expensive. But these times are anything but normal and Delta is waiving fees because of the COVID-19 outbreak.

You can now make plans without having to worry about extra fees if you need change them. We’ll review Delta’s current coronavirus waivers and the details of the airline’s standard change and cancellation policies. Plus, we’ve even got some tips on how you might avoid these fees altogether.

The process for changing or canceling a Delta flight is simple and is the same for flights paid with cash or miles. You can call (800-221-1212) or modify your flight online. If you receive a refund as an eCredit voucher, the voucher should appear in your account within 24 hours.

To make changes online, first log into your account, click on “Manage My Trips,” then “View Trip Details” next to the flight you want to change.

On the next page, click “Modify Flight,” which should be near the top of the page.

delta trip change

Then choose whether you’d like to change or cancel the trip.

delta trip change

For changes you’ll be able to select which flights you’d like to change on the next page and book the new tickets.

For cancellations you’ll go through a two-step process. On the next page click “cancel.”

Then you’ll have one last chance to go back before you click “cancel” again and finalize the cancellation.

Delta’s COVID-19 waivers

Delta’s change and cancellation policies apply during normal operations, but when weather or other unforeseen circumstances happen, the airline will issue travel waivers (you can see all the current Delta waivers here ).

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Delta has waived change and cancellation fees for flights departing through Sept. 30, 2020. For canceled flights, you will receive an eCredit travel voucher (for the value of your flight). Vouchers issued through Sept. 30, and existing vouchers, will be valid through Sept. 30, 2022.

Also, any flight purchased from March 1 to May 31, 2020, can be canceled or changed with no fee for up to a year from when you booked the flight. If you booked a flight before April 17, 2020, you can change it and not pay any fare difference if you’re traveling to the same destination by Sept. 30, 2020. For all other flight changes you’ll have to pay for any price increase and if your new flight is cheaper, you’ll get a voucher for the difference.

If you book, or have booked, award travel that falls under these waivers you will pay no award redeposit fees for changes or cancellations.

Changing or canceling a paid Delta flight

Outside of limited-time travel waivers, these are Deta’s normal rules for changes and cancellations.

Changes and cancellations are not allowed on Basic Economy tickets. If you book a nonrefundable ticket, the cancellation fees start at $200 and go up from there depending on your itinerary. Once the fee is deducted you will receive an eCredit travel voucher that can be applied to future flights for up to one year from when the ticket was issued.

For refundable tickets you won’t ever be charged change or cancellation fees and you will be refunded to your original form of payment. Just be sure to cancel before the flight departs.

Changing or canceling a Delta award flight

The redeposit fee for award-ticket miles is $150 for all award flights. However, if you booked a Basic Economy ticket, changes and cancellations are not allowed. With Delta award tickets any changes/cancellations must be made at least 72 hours before departure. If you choose to change an award flight, you will have to pay any increase in price.

Same-day standby policies

On paid flights you could save by paying for a same-day flight change — the fee is $75. But you can only request a change up to 24 hours before departure and there are other restrictions. You are limited to switching to a flight on the same route departing on the same day. So you’ll need to keep the same origin and destination. You also aren’t able to change from a connecting flight to a nonstop flight.

If you have a high level of  Delta status  (Gold, Platinum or Diamond Medallion), the $75 fee is waived. Same-day changes are only available on flights within the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How to avoid Delta’s change or cancellation fees

All changes or cancellations made within 24 hours of booking are free. Other than special waivers, like we have now, there are a few ways you will be able to get change or cancellation fees waived.

  • Flight cancellation or change – If Delta cancels the flight or changes the schedule by more than 90+ minutes, you can cancel or change for free.
  • Elite status — With Platinum Medallion or Diamond Medallion status, award change/cancellation fees are waived.
  • Special circumstances – If you have a death in the family or military orders, you can get these fees waived, but you’ll most likely need to send in supporting documentation.

You also might be able to get reimbursed for a change or cancellation fee if it’s a benefit of your travel credit card. There aren’t any Delta credit cards that reimburse these fees, but there are other consumer American Express cards and Amex business cards that can save you on fees. The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express both come with up to $200 in annual airline-fee credits for your selected airline, which can be Delta.

Bottom line

Usually, you’ll need to pay a hefty fee to change or cancel a Delta flight. These fees start at $200 for domestic travel and go up to $500 for some international flights. Award flights are a bit more simple and it costs a flat $150 to get your miles redeposited.

Two things to remember are that you aren’t able to change or cancel Basic Economy tickets (paid or award flights) and if you change a flight, you will need to pay the difference if the new ticket is more expensive.

How To Request A Same-Day Flight Change With Delta Airlines

woman on the phone smiling

Last-minute emergencies on the day of a flight can be among the top worst moments for a traveler. You might suddenly realize that you left your passport behind and you're more than an hour away from home. Or there's that growing sense of impending doom as your Uber runs out of gas on the highway on your way to the airport. Then it hits you: You're not gonna make your flight.

The next steps in your mind start to pile up like an inbox full of unopened emails in the midst of a work emergency. Immediate concerns like calling the dog sitter, the rental car agency, and the hotel come to mind. But instead of triaging your trip, what you need to do is call your airline.

That is, if you're flying with Delta Air Lines. This is because Delta has robust same-day flight change options for eligible flights that may cost you nothing, depending on your status. However, not everyone and every flight qualifies. Here's everything you need to know.

How to know if you're eligible to change your flight

While Delta can make it less financially burdensome for travelers to make last-minute changes, unfortunately, it depends on a few factors. So how can you find out if you or your flight are eligible? First of all, if you are part of Delta's Medallion rewards program and you are in the Gold, Diamond, or Platinum tier, your flight changes fees are waived as long as you did not book an economy class ticket, and a seat is available in the same class you booked. If you're not part of their Medallion rewards program — or you're a Silver Medallion member, you will not have the flight change fee waived, and you must pay a fee.

You're also out of luck if you booked a basic economy fare ticket and you're flying domestically. According to Delta , "Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed. However, you may cancel Basic Economy tickets and a cancellation charge will be deducted from the value of your ticket; remaining value will be issued as an eCredit."

Which flights are eligible, and how to request a change

To make a flight change with a reduced or waived fee it must be within 24 hours of the departure time for your original flight, and your new flight must also be for the same day, according to One Mile at a Time . Additionally, your flight is only eligible if it travels within the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. So, if you're headed to Italy, you're finito — or at least your wallet might be. With same-day flight changes, you also are not able to change the departure or arrival airports or make a change from a connecting flight to a nonstop flight.

As for how to make the change request, One Mile at a Time says you will have to call Delta. For those with phone anxiety or who just hate call-hold music, Delta allows passengers to make changes online. However, talking to a human does have its advantages. Especially if you are a Gold or higher tier Medallion member. Sometimes, you might be able to call more than 24 hours in advance to make your change or get empathetic treatment if your change is due to medical or other emergency reasons.

Same-Day Travel Changes

Delta’s Same-Day Travel programs offer greater flexibility when customers need to make a change to a flight on the day of travel. Delta’s Same-Day Travel programs are available for customers traveling within the United States or between the United States, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands on Delta and Delta Connection® flights.

View Same-Day Travel program details for limitations and fees.

Please note:  If a customer wants to make changes to their itinerary using Delta’s Same Day Travel options, changes need to be made through Global Sales Support, the Fly Delta app, delta.com or Delta Reservations. Most tickets will be revalidated, allowing travel agencies to maintain control of their tickets. If the ticket is not able to be revalidated, Delta must reissue the ticket.

Whether it’s a canceled flight, lost baggage or an unexpected medical emergency, these events are not only disruptive, they can also be expensive. Purchasing a travel insurance plan can help mitigate some of the cost when your plans go awry.

According to Squaremouth, a travel insurance comparison site, travelers paid an average of $6,158 for a 16-day trip over the past year. That’s a lot of money on the table if an unexpected occurrence derails your plans.

One option to minimize this loss is purchasing travel insurance, such as coverage from Delta Air Lines’ plan. Here’s what to know about Delta’s trip protection policies.

Delta travel insurance plans

Delta offers international and domestic travel insurance that is administered by Allianz Global Assistance .

Its policies provide you reimbursement for some, or all, of your covered travel purchases and emergency medical expenses in the event of a disruption or delay.

Unlike dedicated travel insurance providers that offer annual or multi-trip plans , Delta’s plan is available for single-trip coverage only. However, you can purchase coverage for multiple individuals, as long as each person is named on the travel insurance plan.

What does Delta travel insurance cover?

Delta’s travel insurance option can be a convenient way to secure travel insurance, and it provides coverage for quite a few common scenarios, such as delayed baggage, trip cancellation and medical expenses.

However, coverage levels for some benefits will vary depending on where you live.

Generally, Delta’s trip protection includes the following:

Trip cancellation and trip interruption. You’ll get the nonrefundable part of your prepaid reservation back if you need to cancel or cut your trip short unexpectedly due to a covered event. Delta’s coverage limits for trip cancellation and trip interruption are based on the limits set for the state you live in.

Emergency medical and dental protection. If you experience an emergency illness or injury while on your trip, Delta travel insurance covers up to $10,000 in medical and dental expenses you incur for a covered occurrence.

Emergency medical transportation. You might not always be near a hospital or urgent care facility when you are injured. For example, hiking in a remote location may require an emergency helicopter ride to a hospital. In this scenario, Delta’s travel insurance offers an emergency medical transportation benefit of up to $50,000.

Travel delay. Travelers who experience a trip delay of six or more consecutive hours can receive meal and accommodation reimbursements. The maximum coverage limits depend on your state of residence.

Lost or damaged baggage. If your baggage is lost, damaged or stolen, Delta travel insurance reimburses you up to $500 for your personal items.

Baggage delay. This protection covers you when you need to replace essential items in your baggage because your baggage was delayed for 24 hours or longer. You can submit a reimbursement claim for up to $100 per person.

Change fees. If you need to make changes to your trip itinerary for a covered reason and it results in change fees, Delta trip protection reimburses you for this fee.

Concierge. As a traveler with Delta travel insurance, you’ll receive concierge support to help make your trip less stressful. A concierge associate can help you book restaurant reservations, provide travel recommendations and more.

24-hour hotline assistance. If you encounter an emergency and need medical, legal or travel assistance during your trip, Delta travel insurance provides around-the-clock access to an associate who can help.

What isn't covered by Delta travel insurance?

A Delta travel insurance plan includes many categories for single-trip coverage; however, certain things that impede your travel might not be covered. Below is a list of what isn't covered under Delta’s trip protection.

Losses due to known, foreseeable and expected events.

Losses due to government restrictions, travel advisories or warnings.

Losses due to personal fear of travel.

Trips canceled due to fear of COVID-19.

Although impacted trips due to COVID-19 generally aren't covered, travelers might receive temporary accommodation under Delta’s Epidemic Coverage Endorsement.

For example, if you or someone in your travel group tests positive or is diagnosed by a physician as having COVID-19, you might be eligible for some benefits, like trip cancellation reimbursement.

Delta international travel insurance cost

Plan rates for Delta trip protection vary based on the details of your trip — such as your destination and the total nonrefundable trip cost for all travelers — as well as your state of residence.

To get an accurate Delta travel insurance cost estimate for your upcoming flight with the carrier, use Delta’s trip protection quote tool online.

Delta also offers a window where you can cancel your trip protection plan and receive a full refund.

You must cancel your plan within 10 to 15 days of purchase (depending on your state). However, cancellations and refunds aren't available beyond this period or if you’ve already departed on your trip.

Is Delta trip protection worth it?

Ultimately, deciding whether Delta’s trip protection plan makes sense starts by assessing your risk tolerance.

If you purchased a nonrefundable flight ticket, reflect on how your finances would be affected if you had to cancel your trip and were unable to recoup the cost.

Conversely, consider your immediate finances and whether you have the budget to pay for Delta’s travel protection upfront.

On top of factoring in risk tolerance and costs, it’s a good idea to compare Delta’s coverage and limits against other travel insurance companies.

Although two different policies might offer baggage loss coverage, for instance, one might offer a maximum coverage of $500 while another covers up to $3,000. Likewise, emergency medical coverage can run from $10,000 up to $500,000 or more, depending on the policy.

» Learn more: Best credit cards for travel insurance benefits

Delta’s travel protection plan is a type of travel insurance that reimburses you for a portion of your travel expenses if you need to cancel a trip or you experience covered interruptions. It also provides other protections, like reimbursement of emergency medical expenses or lost baggage while traveling.

It can be purchased in conjunction with a Delta flight, either at the time of booking or as an add-on for existing reservations.

Delta travel insurance plans are underwritten by BCS Insurance Company or Jefferson Insurance Company, depending on the state you live in. Allianz Global Assistance is the administrator of the plans.

Yes, if you cancel within an eligible timeframe, you can receive a refund for the Delta travel insurance plan. You have 10 to 15 days after purchasing your plan (depending on your state of residence) to cancel and receive a full refund.

However, if you’ve filed a claim or have already departed on your trip, Delta’s trip protection can’t be canceled and is nonrefundable.

Before purchasing Delta’s trip protection for your next vacation, consider the existing insurance coverage you have elsewhere.

For a domestic trip, your health insurance coverage may extend to other states. You may also receive travel insurance benefits through your credit card, which would be activated if you use that card to pay for your trip.

Although Delta’s travel insurance includes many coverage categories, you could find that its coverage maximum amounts might not be sufficient for your needs.

The peace of mind of having travel insurance can be worth it. However, it’s wise to compare travel insurance policies to find the most coverage possible at a cost that’s reasonable for your budget.

What to do when an airline changes your flight

Nick Ewen

Editor's Note

Even when the travel industry isn't dealing with crises, airline schedule changes are commonplace.

A carrier may decrease the frequency of service to a given destination, or they could adjust flight departure times to optimize aircraft utilization. Sometimes, a flight booked several months in advance could undergo multiple changes before the plane actually flies.

This is even more pronounced today as travel patterns change post-COVID-19. Airlines sometimes wait until a few months or even weeks before a flight to decide whether to operate it. This can be due to demand, equipment changes or any number of other reasons.

For example, a holiday meltdown initially sparked by foul weather caused Southwest to cancel some 3,000 flights per day . This wreaked havoc on hundreds of thousands of holiday vacations, leaving passengers stuck, in some cases, for days at a time.

As a paying passenger, it's critical to understand how to handle a situation like this. Here are strategies for dealing with schedule changes.

Learning about a schedule change

Before getting into those strategies, it's important to address how you can stay informed regarding schedule changes. Unfortunately, this varies significantly depending on your airline and how far away from departure you are.

In some cases, an airline will send you an email when it makes a change to your itinerary. This could even happen with insignificant adjustments — like a small change to your arrival or a new flight number with the same times.

Here's an example of an email I received with a five-minute adjustment to my arrival time for a flight I had booked to Madrid, which I ultimately canceled.

delta trip change

However, some airlines will only send these notifications if you're within a few months of departure. As a result, it's critical to periodically check your itineraries on your own. You need to carefully tend your reservations just like you would periodically check on your plants.

Another great tool in your arsenal for schedule changes is ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG's parent company, Red Ventures). This platform is best known for its award-search capabilities . However, it can also alert you when an airline adjusts the schedule of a flight. Add your individual flight details, and the platform will automatically search until your departure for any changes.

delta trip change

Note that this functionality is part of the premium subscription, which is $9.99 per month (or $99.99 for a full year).

A final way to stay informed of schedule changes is to do regularly check your flights manually. You don't need to do this every day or even every week. However, it does make sense to log in to your frequent flyer accounts every few weeks to peek at your upcoming trips. The earlier you can identify a change to your itinerary, the easier it is to deal with it.

Related: Are you entitled to compensation for an equipment swap?

Deciding on a plan

Once you become aware of a schedule change, the next thing to do is figure out a plan for dealing with it. Generally, you have three options:

  • Do nothing. In some cases, like my above example with Iberia, the schedule change isn't significant enough to warrant any action on your part. You're still planning to take the flight, even with the change. Some airlines might require you to acknowledge and accept the change. On others, you may automatically be confirmed on the new flight.
  • Get a refund. In other instances, the change may be significant enough that you no longer want to take the flight at all, and no alternative itinerary works with your schedule. Here, you'd pursue getting a refund.
  • Find a different routing. A significant schedule change may be an opportunity to get rebooked on a different flight — one of the best ways to make the most of these changes.

The initial one is simple enough: You accept the change and plan to take your new flight(s). However, the other two are a bit more nuanced, so let's take some time to unpack them.

Related: Act quickly: Air Canada relents, will finally refund canceled flights

Getting a full refund

delta trip change

If there's been a significant schedule change to your itinerary and you no longer want to take your flight, you're entitled to a refund . Unfortunately, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there were a lot of instances of airlines refusing to issue refunds . In fact, monthly data from the U.S. Department of Transportation showed refunds and other ticket issues as the primary cause of DOT complaints during the height of the outbreak.

However, the DOT came down firmly on the side of the consumer , clarifying that if an airline cancels your flight (or makes a significant adjustment to the schedule), you are entitled to a full refund back to your original form of payment. While some airlines continued to buck this rule, most eventually fell in line.

That said, most airlines have specific thresholds for what counts as a "significant" schedule change. Generally, a significant change is when your departure, arrival or connection times change by somewhere between one and two hours or if you're rebooked from a nonstop flight to a connecting itinerary. We have a guide on these specific policies for all the major U.S. airlines.

If you notice your trip has been hit with a major schedule change, research the individual airline's policy to see if it counts as "significant" enough for a refund. Then, you can call to cancel the itinerary or do so online (with some airlines). Just be crystal clear with the phone agent, or read the terms of the online cancellation very closely. Canceling and getting a certificate may be much less appealing than getting a full refund (like money back to your credit card) — unless you're offered an added bonus for accepting a flight credit .

Finding an alternate (better) flight

Other times, the schedule change may be significant, but you still want to take the trip — just not on the new itinerary. Maybe your flight now leaves three hours earlier, and you can't take off work to catch it. Or maybe the airline has reduced your connection time from two hours to 38 minutes. Even if it's still a "legal" connection (within the airport's Minimum Connection Time, or MCT), you may not be comfortable with it.

In this case, you may suddenly find yourself in the driver's seat; most airlines will work hard to accommodate you on a new route — even if it's more expensive than your original ticket.

For example, I had an American Airlines flight home from New Mexico that included a connection through Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) on my way back to Florida. This routing wasn't the most convenient, but it was the only decent award option at the time. When the schedule changed on the itinerary, however, I was able to change to flights through Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). This meant less travel time and an earlier arrival back home. The new routing wasn't available at the price I paid, but the airline was able to make the switch because of the schedule change.

What if you're booked on a partner airline?

delta trip change

Things get a bit trickier if you use miles from one program for award flights operated by a different partner airline. If you book far enough in advance, you'll likely experience at least one schedule change before departure. If that change is significant, you might struggle to get rebooked.

If this happens far in advance (a week or more) of your flight, you should start with the airline you booked through — even though a different carrier is operating the flights. Ideally, that airline can re-accommodate you on one of its own flights or on a different itinerary that still has awards available .

However, this gets much more complicated when your desired routing isn't open for awards . In this case, your best bet is to ask the booking airline to work with its alliance liaison at the partner airline to try to "force" availability. If that fails, have a fall-back plan.

I faced this exact situation in the fall of 2018. I redeemed United MileagePlus miles for a one-way, business-class flight from Slovenia's Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU) to Miami International Airport (MIA) via Vienna International Airport (VIE). The initial leg was operated by Adria Airways — before it ceased operations — and the long-haul segment was operated by Austrian Airlines.

Five months before departure, Austrian shifted to a seasonal Vienna–Miami flight, so we were rebooked on the following:

  • Adria Airways from LJU to VIE (same as before).
  • Austrian Airways from VIE to Munich International Airport (MUC).
  • Lufthansa from MUC to MIA.

This new routing involved an early-morning flight from Vienna and a short connection in Munich, so it was less than ideal. A much better option would've been the nonstop flight on Adria Airways from Ljubljana to Munich, giving us an overnight at the Munich Airport (and a chance to visit the between-terminals Christmas market ) — but there were no award seats on that flight.

After multiple phone calls to United and pleas for them to work with Adria Airways, we got nowhere. Eventually, I figured out we could take a shuttle bus from Ljubljana to Trieste, Italy; then, we could fly from Trieste Airport (TRS) to Munich and onto Miami the next day. Since the Lufthansa flight from TRS-MUC did have award availability, United could easily make that change.

Ultimately, you should really push the airline you originally booked through to get you a route that works, even if it's a partner airline that made the change. Also, have a last resort in case all else fails.

Bottom line

Booking a new trip is exciting, as it gives you something to look forward to — something we can all use.

Unfortunately, just because you reserve a flight in advance doesn't mean it will operate on that exact schedule. This has never been more true, as we saw during the global pandemic and other recent travel meltdowns.

Fortunately, there are important things to do if you fall victim to a significant schedule change. By staying informed and carefully considering all of your options, you may be able to turn a messed-up itinerary into a much better routing — or even a full refund.

How to Change the Name on a Flight Ticket with Delta

Plans change, and it’s important to know your options when they do. Delta is one of our favorite airlines in the world, and they have a way of making everything easy and user-friendly. Frankly, we’ve never had a bad experience with Delta, and neither have most people we’ve flown with.

If you need to change the name on a Delta flight ticket, it’s important that you know the airline’s rules. The Delta Airlines name change policy can be tricky to find online – even on the official website of Delta Airlines – and nobody wants to be left in limbo! We’ve gone through this process ourselves and have laid out everything you need to know.

Delta Name Change Policy

If you bought a ticket with Delta and can no longer use it, transferring it to someone else is not an option. Delta does not allow you to change the full name on a ticket. In all cases, the person who travels on the flight needs to be the same person that the Delta ticket was originally booked for.

You can’t just contact Delta to change the name on a ticket. There are very strict rules. To change the name on a Delta ticket, you have to meet very strict criteria.

This is why refundable tickets and travel insurance can be so important. You should never book flight tickets unless you are completely certain that you will be able to travel on the specified flight and date. Whether you book with yourself or with a travel agency, it is important that your plans are set in stone before you book your flights.

Delta Airlines Name Correction Policy

While Delta will not let you entirely revamp the name that appears on the ticket, they will allow for minor name corrections that fit into the following criteria. These allowed minor corrections include small adjustments to the first name, middle name, and last name. Generally, these changes are allowed either because of a spelling mistake or because of marriage.

Misspelled names are one of the most common reasons for a name correction request. While you might be able to correct a misspelled name, you might not always be successful. This is the case with any airline.

For this reason, it is absolutely crucial that you write the correct name while inputting your ticket details. If you don’t put the correct name details, you’ll be subject to the Delta Airlines name change rule that is outlined below. Delta allowed for the legal names on a ticket to be changed under the following conditions:

Adding a Middle Name to a Delta Airlines Ticket

Delta doesn’t have much of a problem with you adding a middle name to your ticket. This is the easiest of all the name adjustments that they allow, actually! Middle names can be added online in the “Manage Booking” section, on the mobile app, phone, or through Delta’s world-class texting assistant.

It is crucial that the passenger’s name on a Delta ticket matches what is on their valid photo ID. While middle names aren’t always necessary, having your name be as fully accurate as possible never hurts.

Changing a Last Name in the Case of Marriage or Divorce

If you’ve gotten married and have already booked travel under your maiden name, you are allowed to change the last name on your Delta ticket to your spouse’s last name. This legal name change needs to be proven with a marriage certificate. The last name of the passenger can only be changed entirely like this if the change is the result of marriage or divorce.

In the case of divorce, it is necessary to have your divorce decree on hand proving the reason for the name change. These documents apply in the United States, and may be different in other countries.

Correcting Minor Spelling Mistakes on Delta Reservations

If you look at your Delta reservation one day and realize that you accidentally misspelled any part of your name, you are able to make any necessary changes to correct it. You cannot get through security with an incorrect name on your ticket, and the Delta name correction policy makes this dilemma easy to fix.

If you notice the error within 24 hours of booking, you likely will not need to pay any kind of fee. If you notice the error after the one-day window, you may be subject to a Delta name change fee, as the airline may have to issue you a new ticket. Either way, paying a small fee is better than trying to travel with a ticket that includes the wrong name, as incorrect booking details can derail an entire trip!

Ways to Change the Name on a Delta Flight Ticket

Delta allows its customers to make changes to their reservations through four different platforms: online, on the mobile app, on the phone, and via text message. While using their text assistant is my favorite way of working with them, each method is stress-free and straightforward.

Each type of ticket is theoretically handled equally. This policy is the same regardless of the fare class of your ticket. You can’t fly unless your name matches your government-issued ID, so it is crucial that you use one of these methods to make a change if they don’t match.

Delta Name Changes Online

If you want to make a name change online, head to Delta’s official website. There you can navigate to the manage booking page, insert your confirmation number and last name, and make the necessary name changes. Again, your new name can only contain slight changes of about 3 letters or less in most cases.

Delta Name Changes on the Phone

If you’d rather speak to an agent from Delta’s Global Sales Support team who can help you out with the name change, simply make a phone call to Delta’s customer service number. The phone number is 800-221-1212. When calling, the agent will likely ask you for some of your flight details to confirm your identity, including your confirmation number, name, dates of travel, and destination.

white passenger delta plane on airport during daytime

Delta Name Changes on the Mobile App

If you have already downloaded the Delta Airlines mobile app, the following steps allow for very straightforward name changes, if allowed. Simply open the app, log in, tap on the reservation you’d like to alter and tap “modify flights.” Here you should be able to make the necessary changes, as long as they fall within Delta’s conditions.

This is very convenient, as all of the flight reservations linked to your Delta account show up. You don’t have to go looking for a confirmation email or contacting a travel agent just to make minor name changes.

Delta Name Changes over Text Message

By far, my favorite way to get in touch with Delta is via text message. They have a world-class texting assistant that tries to answer questions for you itself, and can get you in touch via text with a Delta agent otherwise. I have made a wide array of changes to my bookings with this tool, including name changes.

To me, the texting assistant is part of what makes Delta one of the best airlines in the world. From adding lap infants to changing flight details and dates, the texting assistant makes customer service straightforward and convenient without the need to spend hours on hold. This is especially crucial for people who work, as they can simply initiate the conversation while working and respond to Delta over text whenever they are able.

white Delta commercial airplane

Most Airlines Are Strict with Name Changes

While Delta’s name change policy might seem strict, it is far from abnormal. Most other airlines are also very strict about changing flight itineraries. Every flight change costs the airline money in some way, and changing the ticket name is no exception.

If you want to change the name on a Delta Airline ticket, you’re subject to the Delta change name policy. It’s as simple as that. The Delta website is very clear about what passenger name changes are allowed!

When you book a flight, it’s crucial to make sure that the name you write matches the name on your government-issued photo ID. This is what will show up on your boarding pass, and you will have a hard time getting through airport security if your boarding pass and photo ID don’t match. The rules are the same for both international and domestic flights.

How to Reach Delta Customer Service

The Customer Service team of Delta Airlines is top-notch. I say that from personal experience! I’ve contacted them countless times to book a new flight, change personal details, and even make a complete change to a flight route.

Delta always floors me with its quality of customer service. They don’t pay me to say that in any way, either! Whether you need to go through the Delta name change process or want to make a completely new reservation, the Delta Customer Service team can help you out.

If you want to contact Delta Airlines to change the name on a ticket, you have several options. My preferred way to reach them is via their text message AI assistant, which can be reached by texting +1 (800) 221-1212.

Travel | san jose exorcism: coroner details how 3-year-old died, travel | travel troubleshooter: what’s a delta skymile worth in the case of a refund.

DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: My wife, Judy, and I booked a cruise on American Queen Voyages two years ago. The trip was scheduled to depart from Chattanooga, Tennessee, last fall on the American Countess. Four days before our departure, we received a notice from American Queen that it had changed our final destination from Memphis, Tennessee, to Louisville, Kentucky, because of low water levels in the Mississippi River.

Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter ...

I found it hard to believe that they did not know about the low water levels more than four days before our departure, but we were able to change our return flight. Since we had made our original flights on Delta using SkyMiles, we did the same for the flight change.

American Queen asked us to submit documentation for the flight change costs, and I sent them on Oct. 27, 2022. Two months went by with nothing but an automated reply, so I attempted to reach someone at American Queen by telephone. But it’s impossible to contact anyone there regarding refunds by telephone. I reached out to one of the executive contacts that you publish on your site, and a few weeks later, I got a reply from a woman in sales who promised a refund. But she said that it would take approximately 60 days for it to process.

It has now been over one year since I submitted the requested documentation, and they no longer answer my emails. Can you help me get the $930 back that American Queen promised us?

–Terrance Hardy, Escondido

ANSWER: American Queen should have paid you promptly for the rescheduled flight. You were more than patient with the company. You made polite inquiries by phone and email, but nothing seemed to work.

Your refund misadventure is more complicated than it appears. You had booked your tickets using your Delta SkyMiles. When you asked American Queen for a refund, you included copies of your old and new itinerary. You explained that you had to redeem another 31,000 miles each for the new trip. You asked American Queen for $930 by calculating the value of a mile at .015 cents per mile.

The problem is that no one agrees on the value of a mile. Some say a Delta SkyMile is worth 1 cent, some say 1.2 cents, and some say it may be as high as 1.5 cents. But one thing is certain: The American Queen Voyages system was set up to give cash refunds for actual money spent. The mile valuations may have confused it.

The experience you had following up on your reimbursement is not unique to American Queen. Many travel companies drag their feet when it’s time to issue refunds.

You reached out to my advocacy team. I contacted the company on your behalf, and after several inquiries, I received an email that American Queen was “currently expediting this reimbursement.” You finally received your $930 refund.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of it. A few weeks after I resolved this case, American Queen Voyages ceased operations.

Travel made for you: Fast, free Wi-Fi with Delta Sync

Delta is carrying out its industry-leading commitment to bringing fast, free Wi-Fi presented by T-Mobile to its entire global fleet.

First announced at CES 2023, reliable, streaming-quality connectivity will be available from the time the boarding door closes to the moment the plane arrives at the gate, allowing customers to connect during travel and spend their time in a way that suits them – just like they would at home, for free1.

Delta expects the vast majority of our customers to have access to fast, free Wi-Fi by the end of 2024, and expects select remaining regional and international routes will come online into 2025. Our teams are hard at work ensuring we have the best technology onboard to deliver the experience customers expect at scale and reliably across our network.

Delta Sync is Delta’s personalization brand, powering the future of travel through SkyMiles® membership. It currently encompasses two industry-leading entertainment products that have been rolling out as part of the Wi-Fi experience onboard:

  • Delta Sync Wi-Fi brings streaming-quality connectivity to the sky and is available on personal devices – cell phones, laptops, etc. – via the Delta Sync Wi-Fi login page.
  • Delta Sync seatback elevates our industry-leading seatback screens to make them feel more like smart TVs.

These new onboard experiences make your seat in the sky feel more like a seat in your living room, giving you new ways to enjoy travel with connectivity and personalized entertainment that is fit for you.

SkyMiles members can enjoy exclusive offers, access and entertainment from mainstay brands they know and love, including T-Mobile, Paramount+, Walmart+, American Express, Atlas Obscura, Resy and New York Times Games.

Delta Sync is seamlessly integrated with SkyMiles membership and the Fly Delta app, creating the ultimate personalized experience in the sky.

Over the next few years, Delta will be rolling out additional Delta Sync products that will enable a more elevated and meaningful customer experience—from booking to arrival and beyond.

Delta plans to partner with additional premium brands to refresh and elevate the experience over time.

DELTA SYNC SEATBACK

In a nutshell: Smart TV personalization on the seatback screen unlocked by SkyMiles Membership

Delta Sync seatback is available today on all Airbus A321ceo and Boeing 757-200 (75D) aircraft, and Delta plans to bring the new seatback product to Airbus A319s and A320s, as well as Boeing 737-800 aircraft, by the end of the summer.

The new seatback screen platform aims to change how customer loyalty and in-flight experience work together to the benefit of the customer. Delta has a vision for building a program for SkyMiles members both on the ground and in the air that gives them opportunities to engage with the airline beyond the flight.

SkyMiles members will enjoy a refreshed look and feel, best-in-class content and smart TV features designed to feel like streaming services customers have used at home. These features include remembering where you left off in a movie, listing your favorite movies and series, and more.

Delta Sync seatback also offers a host of day-of-travel tools for SkyMiles members designed to streamline their travel journey. The new My Flight category includes details tailored to each user about their connecting flights, including terminal and gate locations as well as scheduled connection times. SkyMiles members who log in to Delta Sync seatback will also receive real-time notifications delivered directly to their seatback screen about any adjustments to their connecting flight’s schedule or other pertinent trip details.

Logging in to Delta Sync seatback follows a familiar process. Customers simply follow the two-step prompt on their seatback screen to seamlessly connect their SkyMiles account to the personalized experience using the Fly Delta app.

BY THE NUMBERS

Since launching fast, free Wi-Fi in February 2023*:

Teams led by Delta TechOps have diligently navigated the complex process of outfitting more than 650 aircraft with free Wi-Fi, one-by-one.

Millions of fliers have joined Delta SkyMiles through accessing Delta Sync Wi-Fi, giving them access not only to free Wi-Fi but also to connected experiences that make travel on Delta unique, rewarding and memorable.

More than 39 million travelers have enjoyed the aircraft as the ultimate platform for discovery – logging more than 45 million streaming-quality sessions onboard .

SkyMiles members on more than 185 aircraft have enjoyed Delta Sync seatback. With over 161,000 seatback screens across more than 850 aircraft —more than double that of the nearest domestic competitor—the airline leads the industry in in-flight entertainment.

*As of Feb. 29, 2023.

WHY IS DELTA DOUBLING DOWN ON IN-FLIGHT CONNECTIVITY?

As high travel demand continues to highlight the importance of customer satisfaction across the airline industry, Delta is focused on delivering immediate benefits to customer loyalty. Traditionally, airline loyalty programs have been built on the idea of longer-term benefits—that customers should sign up, enjoy their travel, and over time, receive benefits for the loyalty they’ve shown. Delta’s shift away from this approach to one of immediate value reflects the airline’s commitment to staying ahead in a dynamic industry and keeping pace with evolving customer interests.

By joining SkyMiles and filling out a profile, Delta Sync automatically uses that information to personalize customers’ experiences on flights. As customers deepen their relationships with Delta through these logged-in member experiences, the airline is able to serve them in new, in-the-moment ways, ultimately furthering their preference for the Delta brand.

HOW IS DELTA PARTNERING WITH SATELLITE PROVIDERS TO BRING FREE WI-FI TO ITS FLEET?

Delta utilizes best-in-class technology in collaboration with leading satellite internet service providers Viasat and Hughes to make its complex connectivity revolution a reality.

Viasat technology delivers high-speed connectivity onboard domestic mainline routes today (with the exception of the 74 aircraft in Delta’s Boeing 717 fleet) and is expanding onboard the airline’s international-serving widebody fleets.

Hughes is bringing streaming-capable connectivity to Delta’s fleet of more than 400 regional jets as well as to the Boeing 717 fleet.

The technology from both suppliers will replace Intelsat systems (formerly known as Gogo).

Both trusted partners play a crucial role in providing a consistent and enhanced in-flight connectivity experience for Delta passengers across various aircraft types and routes.

WHEN WILL FAST, FREE WI-FI BE AVAILABLE ACROSS DELTA’S GLOBAL FLEET?

More than 650 aircraft are in service today with fast, free Delta Sync Wi-Fi, and Delta expects free Wi-Fi availability to represent more than 90% of total available seat miles (ASMs) by the end of 2024. Connectivity at this scale remains unmatched in the industry.

Streaming-capable Hughes connectivity is on its way to Delta’s fleet of more than 400 regional jets as well as to its Boeing 717 fleet, with the first regional aircraft set to come online later this year. Select regional and international routes are expected to come online into 2025, including those serviced by Boeing 717 aircraft.

As Delta outfits its widebody aircraft with upgraded Wi-Fi and rigorously evaluates its performance, free Wi-Fi will be phased by market as high-quality, reliable service becomes available. This strategy mirrors the approach taken with domestic installations in 2022 and aims to deliver a premium customer experience.

HOW DO CUSTOMERS KNOW IF FREE WI-FI IS AVAILABLE ON THEIR FLIGHT?

Customers can visit  delta.com/wifi  for more information on what Wi-Fi service to expect on their next flight. During booking, Wi-Fi-ready aircraft are identifiable by the “fast-streaming Wi-Fi” indicator denoted on a search result.

In addition, customers can reference pre-flight emails, app notifications or look for the following decal located near the boarding door:

Customers can tell whether they are on a free Wi-Fi-ready aircraft by looking for the new decal located near the boarding door.

HOW DO CUSTOMERS CONNECT TO FREE WI-FI?

Delta Sync Wi-Fi is available from pushback to park. Once the boarding door closes, customers are free to connect to the onboard Wi-Fi network by selecting the “DeltaWiFi.com” network in their device’s settings. After connecting, customers enter their SkyMiles number and password.

If a customer navigates away from Delta Sync on their personal device, they can return to the dashboard by simply entering deltawifi.com into a web browser on a mobile device, tablet or laptop connected to Delta Sync Wi-Fi.

A parent or guardian can obtain Delta SkyMiles accounts for children younger than 16 so they can connect to Delta Sync Wi-Fi while traveling.

CAN CUSTOMERS CONNECT ON MULTIPLE DEVICES AT THE SAME TIME?

Yes. In fact, since the introduction of Delta Sync Wi-Fi, the airline has discovered that many people are actively using multiple screens simultaneously while flying, mirroring the experience in their living rooms. This insight came as Delta learned that offering fast, free Wi-Fi has not resulted in any decline in seatback engagement, something that was hypothesized before the introduction of Delta Sync Wi-Fi.

WHAT IS THE EXPERIENCE FOR SOMEONE WHO ISN’T A SKYMILES MEMBER?

For Delta Sync Wi-Fi:

Customers without a SkyMiles account can join for free directly from the login page, if needed, to get immediate access to Delta Sync Wi-Fi.

Customers who prefer to not have a SkyMiles account have the option to purchase Wi-Fi access. They will receive the same fast, reliable connection regardless of how they connect.

Customers who pay for Wi-Fi access will still have access to the internet but will not have access to the personalized entertainment and offers from Delta’s partners via Delta Sync Wi-Fi.

For Delta Sync seatback:

Customers who choose not to pair their SkyMiles account to the seatback screen will still be able to enjoy the hours of hit movies, TV series and audio content but will not have access to the personalization features associated with the new logged-in experience.

For more information on Delta’s Wi-Fi, visit delta.com/wifi.

Through the warmth and service of the Delta people and the power of innovation, Delta never stops looking for ways  make every trip feel fit for you .

<p>To say there have been quite a few changes at Delta Air Lines recently could be considered something of an understatement. The carrier recently announced a sweeping overhaul of its <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://bestlifeonline.com/delta-boycott-reward-lounge-access-changes-news/">SkyMiles loyalty program</a> that significantly changed how customers earn elite status with the company. But even occasional flyers might notice a few differences the next time they go to book flights with the Atlanta-based airline. Delta is scaling back its schedule with changes to domestic and international flights.

There are a few changes in store for Delta Air Lines' schedule in the coming months. The carrier will be dropping a handful of routes it currently flies from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), including to Oakland International Airport (OAK) as of May 7, travel news website The Points Guy reports. The airline also plans to drop its routes from LAX to Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) in Montana and Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) serving Vail, Colorado, initially planned for next winter season.

In a statement emailed to Best Life , a spokesperson for the airline said the Oakland changes were made "to fit the current demand environment," while the BZN and EGE changes were made "as the demand environment for winter travel comes into clearer focus."

Delta is also cutting back some of its international offerings . The airline confirmed that it would be dropping its service between New York John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) and Geneva Airport (GVA) in Switzerland as of Oct. 25, Simple Flying reports. And it's dropping its route from Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport (ATL) to Stuttgart Airport (STR) in Germany, which was scheduled to resume this summer.

<p>Another carrier is also <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://simpleflying.com/delta-air-lines-cuts-boston-mexico-city-route-before-launch/">retooling its schedule</a> in a major way that will affect travel in the coming months. Delta Air Lines has decided to cut its planned route between Boston Logan International Airport and Benito Juárez International Airport in Mexico City, initially slated to begin on Dec. 1, Simple Flying reports.</p><p>The move comes just months after the airline announced the new service in May, which was to provide daily service. The change removes 60 flights from Delta's schedule in total.</p><p>"Given commercial and operational considerations, Delta will pause our planned launch of Boston-Mexico City service this December," the company said in a statement emailed to <em>Best Life</em>. "While we evaluate future plans for this route, we will continue to offer convenient connections from Boston to Mexico City via six Delta hubs. Customers who were booked on the route will be accommodated. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused."<p><strong>RELATED: <a rel="noopener noreferrer external nofollow" href="https://bestlifeonline.com/tsa-alert-summer-travel-baggage-news/">TSA Issues New Alert on What You Can't Bring Through Security</a>.</strong></p></p>

There are still a few new routes and added departures coming soon.

Part of Delta's schedule shift will also result in some extra departures. Beginning June 7, the airline is adding daily service between OAK and ATL. It will also resume its regional route between Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA) in Indiana after scuttling the leg in Oct. 2022, The Points Guy reports.
