“Wander around.” This is a great phrasal verb to know.

To wander around is to move around a place in a casual, aimless manner. When you wander around, you don’t have a specific direction or purpose. You’re moving at a leisurely pace. You’re not looking at your watch. You’re not on a deadline. You don’t have a planned route.

When you wander around, the goal, the purpose is the movement, the exploration, the discovery; there’s no destination. And the key with “wander around” is that it’s a physical place. You can’t “wander around” a website. If you use “wander around,” you have to refer to a physical place.

When I travel, I often go to cities. And when I get to a new city, I always take some time on the first day to just wander around. I just did this in Oaxaca, a city in the south of Mexico. My flight got there around noon. I settled into my room. And then I wandered around for a few hours.

I walked around leisurely. I let my curiosity be my guide. I didn’t follow a route. I didn’t look at a map. I didn’t have a destination in mind. The whole goal, the whole purpose, was to walk wherever my curiosity took me. That’s “wander around.”

Often in the movies—does this happen in real life? I’m not sure—anyway, in the movies, if someone has a lot on their mind, they often wander around their own city at night. They walk around the streets—not with a destination in mind, but just for the sake of walking. I don’t do that. If I have a lot on my mind and I can’t sleep, I just toss and turn for hours. Maybe I should wander around a little bit to clear my head.

You can wander around inside, too. I like to wander around a bookstore. Bookstores are designed for people to wander around. There are so many sections. There are special displays. There are places to sit. There’s always something to discover. If you like to read, you can wander around the bookstore for a few minutes or a few hours. You go from here to there, you stop, you read a little, you let your eyes scan the shelves, you walk slowly, you go back and check something you saw before. This is wander around.

When I go shopping—if it’s not for books—I’m an in-and-out kind of a shopper. I don’t like to wander around the mall . It stresses me out. I want an objective. I want to go the store I need to go to. I want to get my stuff. And then I want to leave. I don’t like to wander around the mall.

But the mall was built for wandering, it was built for people who do like to wander around. There are lots of corridors. The escalators lead you to new places. There are fountains and food courts and entertainment and special displays. Every store has something different. If you like shopping, you might like to wander around the mall—you might even wander around for a few hours and not buy anything. Not my kind of entertainment, but maybe it’s yours.

You can wander around an office. If you work in a big office, you can walk up and down the corridors, go to different floors, chat with people, network. I just finished the Walter Isaacson biography of Elon Musk. And the book talks about how Musk likes to wander around the Tesla and SpaceX factories, talking to the engineers. He wanders around—he casually goes from place to place, talking to his employees.

Where else can you wander around? You can wander around a museum. If it’s a small museum, I like to go in order, I want a strategy. I’ll go room to room. But sometimes if the museum is really big, I like to wander around…to walk around without a strategy or plan.

You can wander around a park, a playground, or a zoo. I told you about my trip to Oaxaca. I went to the botanic gardens there. Typically, you can wander around the botanic gardens. But this one was different. This was a guided tour. You have to follow the path; you have to follow the tour guide. You’re not allowed to wander around.

Husband Appreciation Day begs the question: Have you been neglecting your spouse year-round?

meaning wandering round

The sweet, sultry scent of coffee you smell first thing in the morning. The bed miraculously made just when you go to tidy the sheets. The elation you experience when you open the refrigerator and realize you don't need anything from the grocery store.

It's the little things that keep us happy. And it's all the more true in relationships . But life and work often get in the way and make us think of our significant others as just kind of being there, and as a result we forget to pay them special attention. That's why "Husband Appreciation Day" – coming up on Saturday – might be worth noting on your calendar.

Experts say celebrating days like these doesn't necessarily mean you've been neglecting your spouse year-round. But it's a time to show they are worth recognizing and it's helpful to reflect on your relationship and communication.

"I don't think there's anything wrong with a little extra appreciation," says  Loree Johnson , a licensed marriage and family therapist. "It doesn't hurt as long as it's expressed in a very genuine manner. Small gestures mean a lot, and can go a long way."

We take our partners for granted

Work, school, life, kids and dinners soak up social calendars and leave little room for romance , let alone ways to show our partners we care .

"It's so easy for one person to just expect the other person to do that, and take it for granted," says Jane Greer , marriage and family therapist and author of " Am I Lying to Myself?: How To Overcome Denial and See the Truth ." "And the person who's doing all these little gestures of love starts to feel unappreciated, taken for granted, not valued."

It happens without you realizing (and that's OK). "Sometimes we don't know we're falling off the horse until we land with a big thump," Greer says.

Did you see? David and Victoria Beckham and how to (maybe) tell if your partner is in love with you

The importance of expressing gratitude

Many gestures help keep that relationship spark burning bright. But the most important one might be letting someone know how much you appreciate them.

"Research has consistently demonstrated a robust link between expressions of gratitude within romantic relationships and various indicators of relationship satisfaction," says Miranda Nadeau , a licensed psychologist. "When we hear our spouse expressing thanks towards us, we feel happier about the relationship overall."

It also helps shield couples from conflict. "Partners are more inclined to approach disagreements with empathy and understanding, mitigating the potential for conflict escalation," Nadeau adds.

Is 'the spark' a red flag? Sometimes. Experts say look for this in a relationship instead

How to keep a marriage healthy

  • Lean into the extra appreciation – on these special days and otherwise. "It's essential to notice the good, reflect the positive qualities you see in your spouse, and seek to understand rather than rationalize your partner's feelings," Nadeau says. You can't go wrong with another "I love you" or "thank you" in your day, or another alternative expression of love your spouse will enjoy.
  • Work together when conflict arises. "Making sure that they turn toward each other and not away from each other," Johnson adds. "Are they regularly checking in? Do they know what the highs and lows of their partner's day are like? Do they know what's worrying their partner? Do they know what their partner is excited about? What are their rituals that help them stay connected?" Also get to know how your partner likes to resolve conflicts.
  • Go the extra mile with chores. Does your partner hate grocery shopping but frequently do it anyway? Maybe you pick up the dinner supplies a few days a week instead. "Continuing to find ways to keep that energy focused on your partner, is one of the most helpful things that someone could do," Johnson says.
  • Quality time matters. Think date night, daily or weekly check-ins – whatever rituals work best for the relationship .
  • Communicate, communicate, communicate. Say what you desire, "and if you get it, acknowledge," Greer says. "Acknowledgement is the key here."

Try and keep the love-fest going as long as you can – subtly, too.

"While it's nice to have special days to celebrate, it's even better to make appreciation a regular part of your relationship," Nadeau says. "It's like watering a plant – you have to do it regularly to keep it healthy and growing strong."

And in case you were wondering: "Wife Appreciation Day" is in September.

2024 NFL Draft: The decline of the second-round QB and what it could mean for Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix, more

Could a second-tier qb slip into the end of day 2 or day 3.

michael-penix-jr.jpg

The concept of a "second-round" quarterback, based on how we discuss and talk through the position, is one of the most unique in "draft economics." If a team needs a quarterback and believes that quarterback can be their long-term starter, they should (and usually do) take that quarterback as early as possible in the first round.

And generally, if a team believes a quarterback is best suited to be a backup (and maybe has some traits/abilities to potentially develop into a starter), they should aim to draft them where they usually take "important" backups: Day 3 of the draft, or occasionally late in the third round.

So, based on how important the quarterback position is, the idea of a second- or third-round quarterback, conceptually, doesn't make a ton of sense. Over the last decade-plus, NFL teams have shifted their view on that very idea. And it could potentially have real ramifications for players like Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix, Spencer Rattler and more, much like it did for Desmond Ridder and Malik Willis just a few seasons ago.

A change in team drafting habits

Since the NFL rookie wage scale was put into place in 2011, teams no longer had to factor a player's rookie contract in their decision-making, or at least as much as they used to. In 2010, the first overall pick ( Sam Bradford ) made more than 14 times as much as the first pick of the second round. In 2011, it was a little over four times.

And since that time, the financial risk of early first-round picks went substantially down, and the value of trying to find a starting quarterback in round two or later went down with it.

Below is a historical graph of the ratio of second-round picks to first-round picks since 2011:

screenshot-2024-04-14-at-4-37-09-pm.png

In 2011, 0.50 means 50% as many second-round QBs were drafted compared to first-round QBs. In 2013, 1.00 means the number of first and second round quarterbacks drafted were equal.

For one, only 12 quarterbacks have been drafted in the second round (on average one per year) since 2011. Additionally, of those one, five were taken in the first five picks of the second round, meaning they very easily could've been first-round picks. As you can see by the trend line from the data, we've seen a substantial and consistent drop in teams taking quarterbacks in the second round.

And while a handful picked after the first few picks of the second round have been successful (most notably Jalen Hurts and Jimmy Garoppolo ), many were players who fit this conundrum well: If a quarterback has traits a team may like, but it doesn't feel convicted enough or trust him to be a franchise quarterback enough to take him in the first round, it's probably not wise to take that quarterback in the second round (i.e. Kyle Trask , Christian Hackenberg , DeShone Kizer  and Brock Osweiler ). And based on the data, teams appear to have collectively learned from those mistakes.

And in the third round, the average quarterback draft pick is pick 82, sliding somewhere in the back half of the round.

With the quarterback position, the draft valuation is different than a receiver or a lineman or a defensive back. It's a position that, if you draft in the top-100 picks, it can shape how your locker room views your team's outlook, both immediately and for the future. It's a position that, if it doesn't work out, you can't simply shift that player to more special teams or a different role. It's a position that, if you can't solve as a general manager, you won't hold that title very long.

And that's the biggest reason why, as teams continue to value analytic and new-age roster construction strategies, we've seen teams be more aggressive than ever to trade into the early first round for a quarterback, and shy away from the second- or third-round quarterback. Fortune favors the bold and, in the draft, the convicted, and teams no longer subscribe to the "we'll try to get one later" strategy at the most important position in sports.

For more draft coverage, you can hear in-depth analysis twice a week on  "With the First Pick"  -- our year-round  NFL Draft  podcast with  NFL Draft  analyst Ryan Wilson and former  Vikings  general manager Rick Spielman. You can find "With the First Pick" wherever you get your podcasts:  Apple Podcasts ,  Spotify ,  YouTube , etc. Listen below!

What does this mean for the 2024 NFL Draft class?

Most mock drafters feel confident four quarterbacks fit that mold of "potential franchise quarterback," and that all four should go between picks 4-7 of the NFL draft: Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy.

After that, there are questions abound about how teams value Washington's Michael Penix Jr., Oregon's Bo Nix, South Carolina's Spencer Rattler, and others. As of now, there are five teams whose roster construction very likely sets them up to draft a quarterback in the first few rounds: Chicago, Washington, New England, Minnesota and Denver.

There's also teams, such as Raiders , Rams , Giants , Jets  and  Falcons , who may consider one in the first three or four rounds. But each of those five teams have either two quarterbacks with a contract/credentials to be challenging for a starting job, and/or an unquestioned starter for this season and beyond.

Teams set up to select QB

Teams who could consider picking qb.

Of the five teams likely to draft a quarterback early, four of them will likely snag them in the first few picks of the draft. Leaving just one team, most likely one of the Patriots, Broncos or Vikings, the only one left out of getting one of the expected top-four quarterbacks. These teams are far more likely to consider a quarterback in the late third or four round rather than use a premium pick on a player who will likely be their third-stringer as a rookie, barring they value the quarterback so highly they "can't believe" he's there in the second round.

That's not to say this next "tier" of quarterbacks don't have NFL starter traits. Penix's ball placement across the field is special. Nix's experience and perimeter accuracy is hard to ignore. Rattler's arm talent and fluidity gives him one of the more exciting upsides of any in this class.

But based on this data and current NFL quarterback rooms, history says we maybe should expect, after the expected four early picked quarterbacks, maybe as few as one quarterback between picks 33 and 80, and then the rest following. That could mean, for example, Penix slides into the second or even early third round, and Nix and Rattler slip to the late third or even fourth round.

We talk about the quarterback position so much, and it's no surprise that these players, especially ones that show starter traits, tend to "rise" in the discussion around the draft. But in the end, they play a position that, unless teams feel you're a potential franchise quarterback, you're likely relegated to a backup role and, therefore, a position in the draft where backups get drafted.

And for a few of the favorites among those in the media covering the NFL Draft, that could lead to at least one surprising quarterback name slipping in the draft into Friday and/or Saturday of draft weekend.

The 2024  NFL Draft  will take place from April 25-27 in Detroit. More draft coverage can be found at CBSSports.com, including the weekly  updated draft order ,  mock drafts  and a regularly available  look at the eligible prospects .

Steph Curry's Emotional Message About Klay Thompson, Draymond Green After Season-Ending Loss

  • Author: Andy Nesbitt

In this story:

Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors had their season come to an end Tuesday night with a 118–94 loss to the Sacramento Kings in the NBA play-in tournament.

It didn't take long for people to wonder if the loss marked the end of a special era that saw Curry and Klay Thompson team up for years as the "Splash Brothers" while winning four NBA titles. Thompson, who went scoreless in 32 minutes of action against the Kings, is set to hit free agency this summer and his future with the Warriors is very much in doubt.

Curry spoke after the game about how much Thompson and Draymond Green mean to him:

Steph Curry on Draymond/Klay: “I can never see myself not with those two guys.” Are big changes needed? “I just want to win.” pic.twitter.com/ugRK6e8eeb — Anthony Slater (@anthonyVslater) April 17, 2024

Warriors coach Steve Kerr also spoke after the game about Thompson .

"We need Klay back," Kerr said. "I know he had a tough night tonight, but what he represents for us—the spacing—we're not a deep shooting team. We're a little top-heavy. Klay's presence means so much to the spacing of the floor, to the flow of the offense.

"He's still got good years left. We want him back. Obviously, there's business at hand, and that has to be addressed. ... What Klay has meant to this franchise, as good he still is, we desperately want him back."

It should be an interesting offseason for the Warriors.

The Wild, the Weird and the Controversial: the 2024 Venice Biennale

As visitors pour in, parallel art displays are cropping up around the city, including lesser-known de Kooning works and an installation that has incensed locals.

13 abstract bronze figures of ladies in big skirts are in a line in St. Mark’s Square in Venice.

By Farah Nayeri

Willem de Kooning had never been to Italy when he traveled to Venice for an amorous rendezvous in September 1959. Things got complicated, so the Dutch-born artist made a quick trip to Rome — and was completely entranced. He immediately returned for a nearly four-month stay in the Italian capital, and was back again in the summer of 1969.

Those whirlwind jaunts are the focus of “Willem de Kooning and Italy,” a new exhibition that opened on Wednesday at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. It’s part of a rich rollout of events timed to coincide with the Venice Art Biennale — not all of which are to Venetians’ liking.

The Biennale, which has hosted a who’s who of contemporary artists since its 1895 founding, drew a record 800,000 visitors at its previous edition in 2022. This year, 331 artists and collectives are represented in the central exhibition (curated by Adriano Pedrosa), and dozens of others are presenting work in 87 national pavilions. In parallel to the Biennale, there are dozens of exhibitions timed to coincide with it — including the de Kooning show.

The show illustrates, through 75 works, how brief voyages to Italy shifted the trajectory of the Dutch-born, New York-based artist, who is universally recognized as a pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, one of the most important postwar art movements in the United States.

Without the Rome stopovers, the art historian Gary Garrels said, “I can’t imagine that he ever would have made sculptures.” Garrels, the former longtime chief curator for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art who co-curated the show with Mario Codognato, noted that on de Kooning’s second stint in Rome in 1969, the artist started making small clay figures in a foundry of the sculptor Herzl Emanuel, some of which were then cast in bronze — and that in the four years that followed, sculpture became a central pursuit. The Accademia will present an almost comprehensive group of the sculptures.

The black-and-white drawings that de Kooning produced on his first stay in 1959 clearly influenced the paintings he made right afterward, and a number of those will also be in the show, Garrels said.

While the name and legacy of the artist are still very much connected to Abstract Expressionism, Garrels said, “it’s time that we look at de Kooning in a somewhat different, fresh way.”

“He loved American culture,” she said, “but he also continued to have deep interest in the history, the culture of Western Europe, especially Italy.”

“Somehow, that hasn’t been as acknowledged,” he added.

A short walk from the Accademia is what was for centuries Venice’s maritime customs house — the Punta della Dogana — where ships stopped for inspection. It’s one of two contemporary-art spaces established in the city by the French billionaire collector and patron François Pinault, and currently hosts a solo show by the French-born artist Pierre Huyghe.

Huyghe is known for incorporating living organisms (fauna and flora) in his art. Ants and spiders crawled the floor and walls of a gallery during a 2011 exhibition in Germany. In the 2012 Documenta exhibition in Kassel, Germany, his outdoor display included psychotropic plants, a wandering dog with a leg painted pink, and a reclining statue with a beehive on its head.

The artist creates situations involving animals, plants or machines and lets chance and happenstance take over.

While there are no spiders or pink-legged dogs in his Punta della Dogana show “Liminal,” one aquarium contains a crab that lodges itself inside the replica of a sculpted head by the artist Constantin Brancusi, while another aquarium features starfish covering the legs of a truncated nude figure made of concrete.

An exhibition highlight is “Camata” (2024): a film where machine-driven robots carry out a mysterious ritual on an unburied human skeleton in the Atacama Desert in Chile, the oldest and driest desert on earth. The film is edited in real time, during the exhibition, by artificial intelligence; it has no beginning or end, and is constantly changing.

Emma Lavigne, chief executive of the Pinault Collection, noted that, over the last 10 years, displays by Huyghe had featured “forms from art and forms from nature, the controlled and the uncontrolled, and they have invited us to completely rethink the exhibition space.”

“In this exhibition, he examines the threshold between life and death, between life and the afterlife, between the human and the animal, and between humanity as we know it and the new forms of humanity created by artificial intelligence,” added Lavigne, who curated the Pierre Huyghe retrospective at the Pompidou Center in Paris in 2014-15.

Disturbing though they may be, Huyghe’s artworks (which have been on view at Punta della Dogana since March 17) have not made waves among the people of Venice. The same cannot be said for “Las Meninas a San Marco,” an outdoor art installation by the artist Manolo Valdés: a row of 13 bronze sculptures of female figures inspired by the young ladies-in-waiting in the Velázquez painting “Las Meninas.” The figures stand on the most conspicuous spot in Venice: the extension of St. Mark’s Square that leads to the Grand Canal — right outside the Doge’s Palace.

Installed by Venice’s Contini Gallery (who paid 122,000 euros, or about $132,480, for the privilege, according to a local news site), “Las Meninas a San Marco” will be taken down on June 15. But some Venetians are incensed.

In a statement, the heritage group Italia Nostra-Venezia denounced “an umpteenth act of violence against an already martyred body,” meaning the city of Venice, and said: “Not everything is for sale in Venice, and especially not our cultural heritage.” It was, the group said, yet another sign of a “biennalization” of the city that has been going on for decades, and seen contemporary art overtake Venice.

The group’s Facebook post drew growls of discontent. “Horrendous, out of place, exaggerated,” wrote one commentator of the sculptures. Another said one sculpture was enough; why have 13? A third wondered whether the bronze figures were standing in line.

The timing of the installation is no accident: Opening just two weeks before the Venice Biennale, it is sure to get attention.

Why so much attention? Liza Essers, who runs South Africa’s pioneering Goodman Gallery, explained that the Biennale “has the authority, the power, the voice that determines art history, in many ways.”

Goodman, which also has galleries in London and New York, is poised for its best Biennale ever, she said: Five living artists it represents are included in the Biennale exhibitions (the main show and the pavilions), as are five 20th-century artists whom it has exhibited frequently since it was founded in 1966.

In addition, one of the gallery’s artists, William Kentridge, is being shown in a parallel space, the Arsenale Institute for Politics of Representation.

“Self-Portrait As a Coffee Pot” is a nine-episode video series created by Kentridge in his studio during and after the Covid lockdown. The artist films himself — sometimes comically and using camera tricks — talking and making wall-sized charcoal drawings that represent his childhood, South Africa’s history and his creative process.

Essers said that there had been a longstanding tendency by the art world to “put Africa into one box” when there are “many countries in Africa.”

This year’s Biennale will be different, she said: There are more than 50 artists from the African continent in Pedrosa’s central exhibition alone — an unprecedented number. The exhibition will be “rewriting history and inserting a voice from the Global South into the Western canon and into the narrative of art history.”

Florida schools must teach about communism. Does that mean kindergarten too?

  • Jeffrey S. Solochek Times staff

The big story: To mark the 63rd anniversary of the Bay of Pigs invasion, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law a requirement that all public schoolchildren learn about the ‘atrocities’ of communism.

“My view is, we might as well give them the truth when they are in our schools, because a lot of these universities will tell them how great communism is, so we are setting the proper foundation,” DeSantis said at a news conference at the Hialeah Gardens Museum.

What many people heard is that the lessons will be required instruction for K-12 schools. That could include children as young as 5 years old. They wondered how this might happen. The law says the materials must be age- and developmentally appropriate, and it leaves it to the Department of Education to determine what that means. Read more here .

Book removals: Florida public school principals now face possible penalties for removing books from classroom and library shelves. The State Board of Education approved the rule, saying they do not want educators to politicize the state’s book challenge process by preemptively pulling titles. The state also has encouraged schools to “err on the side of caution” when it comes to book content, leaving some people to say principals are caught in the middle of conflicting expectations. • Dozens of residents of Escambia County held a “Bring Back Our Books” rally outside school district headquarters, WUWF reports. The Escambia district has removed large numbers of books, including the dictionary, prompting the state’s latest rules aimed at controlling the process. More from the Pensacola News-Journal .

Charter schools: Residents of Newberry rejected a proposal to convert three Alachua County public schools that serve their community to charter status, Main Street Daily News reports. The group backing the plan issued a statement raising questions about the integrity of the result. More from the Gainesville Sun . • The State Board of Education said it will monitor whether the Broward County school district follows through on its agreement to pay charter schools a share of past years’ referendum funds, the Miami Herald reports. The state had accused the district of violating statute on revenue sharing.

New schools: A planned new K-8 school in Gadsden County is stalled and could lose its state funding as officials debate where to place the campus , WFSU reports. It would be the county’s first new school in 50 years.

Research school: Parents of children at the University of Florida’s PK Yonge Developmental Research School are upset with a university proposal to make the school’s admission requirements more selective , WCJB reports.

School closures: Broward County officials are exploring possibly closing at least five under-capacity schools , WTVJ reports. Some board members clamored for the administration to move more quickly.

Security: The Brevard County School Board agreed to join the state’s school guardian program , which includes having armed employees other than law enforcement officers, Florida Today reports. Instructional staff would not be used as guardians.

Left alone, wandering around a hotel, bruised and in tears, is how staff found three children after being left alone in an Orlando hotel.

RELATED: Documents: 2 toddlers, 1-year-old found alone, distressed in Orlando hotel

Deputies say the children may have been left alone for two hours before their mother and her boyfriend came strolling into the hotel at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.

The woman, Rashay Braynen, and her boyfriend, Gregory Pierre, are behind bars Thursday night.

According to the arrest affidavit, hotel staff were notified that a 2-year-old boy was alone on the fifth floor.

Staff then received a second call from another child, a 3-year-old boy, crying on the second floor in the hallway. Then, at around 6 a.m., Braynen and Pierre came back to the hotel.

Staff said they had been seen coming and going all night but had been away for roughly two hours when the kids were found.

Deputies then made another shocking discovery — a 1-year-old infant was found in the couple's room where they were locked in, left completely alone and in tears.

James Delaughter, who isn't related to the case but is staying at another nearby hotel, said it's common to see children in this area being mistreated.

"It is a lot of that going on now where people don't have the time or the patience for their own children that they created. I just don't really understand that. It's disheartening," Delaughter said.

Braynen said the kids had been left with Pierre's brother, who is also staying at the hotel - but that person said they were never asked to watch the children.

The 2-year-old was checked by medics for swelling on his forehead.

The Florida Department of Children Families was contacted, and the children were placed in the care of a grandparent.

Braynen is facing several charges of child neglect.
