- Photo Expeditions
- Photo Expeditions are led by accomplished photographers and instructors who are also professional naturalist guides—wildlife experts who understand animal patterns and behaviors, and who know how and where to position you for the best photo opportunities.
- While all our trips feature small groups, Photo Expeditions travel with even fewer guests , to ensure unimpeded access to the best shots, plenty of room for your gear aboard our vehicles, and the utmost in flexibility to pursue photo opportunities as they arise.
- Slower pacing and longer days in the field allow patience to pursue the shots that require it. We often rise early and linger through sunset to capitalize on the best light.
- Some Photo Expeditions also include extra weight allowance on select flights to accommodate equipment—a key inclusion in certain destinations, especially when you compare allowances for African safaris.
- You'll get all the personal attention you need from our outstanding photographer guides, who provide one-on-one coaching tailored to each guest’s interests and ability.
- Photo Expeditions also include special training and workshops on everything from composition and lighting to editing and post-processing techniques.

Svalbard Wildlife Photography Holidays 2022/2023
Join the ultimate Arctic photography holiday. Take a trip to photograph the extraordinary wildlife and polar scenery of Svalbard, north of Norway onboard a vessel with just 12 photographers and 2 expedition leaders.
Svalbard archipelago is one of the best places on the planet for wildlife photography. On our trips, we’re regularly lucky enough to encounter incredible creatures in their natural habits, including the ‘King of the Arctic’ – the polar bear. We have also encountered an abundance of land mammals, marine life, and vast birdlife including walruses, beluga whales, blue whales, reindeer, Arctic foxes, and guillemots.
Polar bear photos by Chase Teron. One of the many highlights of a Svalbard wildlife holiday. You can join a photo tour of Svalbard with Chase here.
Svalbard: a Dream Wildlife Photography Holiday Destination
Svalbard is an archipelago with nine main islands to the north of Norway. It’s located just 800 miles (1287.48km) from the North Pole, and home to an abundance of wildlife. Svalbard’s polar witness is a haven to wildlife during the summer months when migratory birds return from warmer places and there is more vegetation.
Summer is also the perfect time to come and photograph this incredible holiday destination. Opportunities for wildlife sightings, favourable conditions, and 24-hr sunlight are an Arctic photographer’s dream. As the long winter draws to an end, the sea ice around Svalbard opens, which makes it possible navigate the waters safely, and reach remote places with unique polar wildlife, including species that don’t exist anywhere else on earth.
Travelling on a small, comfortable micro-expedition vessel with 12 photographers guarantees that we will get close to nature and wildlife, reaching remote and uninhabited areas that larger cruises can’t get to. Although wildlife moves at its own pace, and we can never guarantee sightings, we’re regularly fortunate enough to see polar bears roaming in their vast, natural home as we explore the Svalbard fjords and coastline. We also frequently see walruses, beluga whales, and an abundance of birdlife.
There are only three species of terrestrial mammals on Svalbard – the Svalbard reindeer, Arctic fox, and sibling vole. The vole was probably introduced to Svalbard in animal fodder at the Russian mining settlement of Grumantbyen. Attempts to introduce other species like Arctic hare and muskox have failed to establish and they have gone extinct. But, there is plenty of birdlife to see on the archipelago. Over 227 different bird species have been recorded on Svalbard, of which 41 are considered annual breeding birds including the pink-footed goose, the red-throated diver, and the northern fulmar.
Wildlife Photography in Svalbard
Svalbard’s waters are home to 19 species of marine mammals, including polar bears, walruses, five species of seals, and 12 specials of whales. Of these, polar bears, walruses, narwhals, white and bowhead whales stay in the area all year round. The others tend to visit more sporadically during the summer when there is more food available on Svalbard.
Conditions are tough for land mammals too, due to permafrost and a lack of vegetation. This is the reason that rodents like mice, rats, and lemmings don’t venture so far north. The only exception is the sibling voie, which was introduced on Svalbard, and resides on the grassy slopes of Grumantbyen and Bjørndalen on the southern side of Isfjorden.
Summertime is hectic for Svalbard’s mammals and birds between June and August. Lower coastal areas tend to be snow-free, there is 24-hr daylight, and temperatures are warm enough for rearing young. The sea ice and under-ice are vital feeding grounds for polar bears, seals, and seabirds.
There are several bird sanctuaries on Svalbard, and lots of great opportunities for birdwatching, particularly on Spitsbergen. The largest island of the archipelago is home to many bird species including the puffins, Arctic terns, kittiwakes, glaucous gulls, and Brunnich’s guillemots.
Top Tips for Wildlife Photography on Svalbard
To get the most out of your wildlife photos on Svalbard:
- Bring a long lens. We often see wildlife from a distance, so we recommend a minimum telephoto lens of 300mm. If you are looking to get close up shots of animals, then bring a 600mm lens.
- Considering renting a lens, it’s is more cost-effective than purchasing
- Bring lots of spare batteries. Batteries don’t last as long in the Arctic cold.
- Use a fast shutter speed for photographing fast-moving wildlife such as birds.
For more wildlife photography information and tips, see our Svalbard photography page
What Is the Best Time for Wildlife Photography in Svalbard?
Photography on Svalbard is divided into distinct seasons. Summer begins in May, where photographers can take advantage of 24-hr sunlight, and often calm weather conditions. Sea ice begins to recede, which opens up the north coast to boats – ideal for polar bear sightings. Mountains are often still snow-capped, providing a majestic backdrop for Arctic landscape photography.
Conditions change again in late summer, and by late July and early August, the north of Svalbard is relatively free of sea ice meaning, which means it’s possible for fully circumnavigate it’s largest island, Spitsbergen. It also means more opportunities for wildlife photography oppurtunities.

And there are plenty of magnificent photo opportunities along the way, as visit walrus haul-out sites, explore areas where polar bears roam and get up close to some of Svalbard’s largest, and most impressive glacier fronts. On previous trips, we regularly see walruses, seals, and land-based mammals including Arctic foxes, and reindeer. There’s an excellent chance of encountering marine life too, such as beluga whales, blue whales, and fin whales. Conditions-allowing, we’ll also attempt to explore the sea ice to the north of the archipelago that stretches all the way to the North Pole.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Photography Holidays
What Sort of Wildlife Photography Holidays Does Secret Atlas Offer?
Secret Atlas wildlife photography holidays are a one-off opportunity to experience the Arctic like a pro photographer. Our micro-expedition cruises are on a small vessel carrying just 12 guests, plus an expert wildlife photographer, and an experienced expedition guide. Each expedition departs from Longyearbyen in Svalbard which is accessed by daily flights from Oslo in Norway. New expedition cruise ships can take up to 350 passengers and here at Secret Atlas we believe that is too intrusive for photography in sensitive places. Travelling in small groups means everyone will fit on the zodiac landing craft, so there’s more time for exploring, and plenty of expert help to capture incredible Arctic wildlife and photographs.
Secret Atlas is a member of AECO.
Why should I choose a small group wildlife photography holiday?
A small group is the best way to experience the wildlife in Svalbard. And, it’s better for wildlife too. Would you rather go ashore as one of 12 guests, or wait around for hundreds of other tourists disembark from a huge expedition vessel? Travelling on a small vessel allows you to encounter nature first hand, in an intimate and peaceful way. You’ll also get more out of your photography with expert tutorials for capturing the Arctic landscape and wildlife in sharp detail.

"This is my second photography trip with Don. You couldn’t ask for more in a trip leader. Don gives everyone one-on-one attention. No questions go unanswered. Don made every effort to help each person get the shots they wanted. He is very knowledgeable in all cameras and camera settings. He was intimately familiar with the areas we visited, as well as local bird behavior. He did all the research to make sure we got the best of the best in sunrise and sunset bird photos. Don’s enthusiasm to work with you and take photos is addicting. " - Melinda M.

Don planned a trip that was packed with events and exposed us not only to the birds of the region, but also to reptiles, insects, and fabulous landscapes. Don’s knowledge of the area, as well as his photographic expertise made this an unforgettable trip. I returned with great shots, but more importantly, had so much fun that I was sorry when the trip was over. You won’t find a more enthusiastic leader." - Kathleen O.

Ecuador Guided Photo Tour - Client Feedback...
"Went on Don's trip to photograph Hummingbirds and more. This was done in the rainforests of Ecuador. This trip was fantastic. We went to 2 wonderful lodges high in the tropical rainforest. We learned the skills necessary to photograph birds of all types. It was an intense experience with fantastic results. The images of these birds caught in flight are truly breathtaking. I plan on going with Don again in the future." -John B.

Meet Daniel and Tanya Cox
2023 Brazil Pantanal Jaguar Wildlife Photo Expedition I Travel Plans
Tuesday, august 22.
Depart US/Canada
Wednesday, August 23 (D)
Arrive São Paulo (GRU) or Brasilia (BSB) and board your connecting flight to Cuiabá. There will be a local representative to greet you at the Cuiabá airport and transfer you to the hotel. A welcome group dinner is planned at a nearby venue. Overnight Hotel Slim Cuiabá Aeroporto or similar near airport.
Thursday, August 24 and Friday, August 25 (B, L, D)
After an early breakfast, we’ll depart from Cuiabá for the elevated Transpantaneira Road, one of the best wildlife-viewing areas in the world. The road is unpaved with over 136 little wooden bridges. There may be encounters with capybara, coatimundis, crab-eating foxes, caiman, or neo-tropical otters. Anaconda, the world’s largest constrictor, can sometimes be seen, along with other elusive mammals including the giant anteater and tapir. This area harbors a world record 82 species of large birds. This time of the year, the Transpantaneira is typically quite dry, so we’ll stop periodically to photograph birds and wildlife along the way.
Please Note: Other tour operators will use an open “military-style” vehicle for these transfers which is SO uncomfortable! It’s hard to get up and down the ladders to get on and off the vehicle, and the seats are very hard for such a long ride. The temperatures are HOT and the roads are VERY dusty. We prefer to transfer guests in an air-conditioned bus. It’s easy to get in and out of for photography stops, and you’ll welcome the refreshing air-conditioning.
Explore wildlife all around the ranch-style lodge on trails or from unique wildlife observation towers, one near a nest of habituated jabiru storks. In morning or mid-afternoon, take a boat ride on the Rio Pixaim River, a great source of photo opportunities for caimans, capybara, brown capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys, anteater, ocelot, and also birds including toucans, kingfishers, parakeets, and hawks. It’s also one of the best sites for predictable viewing of a family of giant otters from a distance of only 3 to 16 feet away—often they will come close to the boat craning their necks and snorting loudly. There may be opportunities to see jaguars too—Dan got one of his best shots here! However, jaguar sightings will be more prevalent when we stay at the Jaguar Flotel & Suites on the river.
Saturday, August 26 – Thursday, August 31 (B, L, D)
Depart early after breakfast, continue on the Transpantaneira Road en route to our second lodge, the Jaguar Flotel & Suites. We’ll travel to the end of the road (about three hours with stops) and then boat on the Cuiabá River to our remote camp in the Meeting of the Waters State Park.
We’ll be staying in the heart of jaguar country. SIX NIGHTS on the Jaguar Flotel & Suites — 1-2 more nights than other tour operators!!
To improve the jaguar-viewing experience, we’ll stay at a superb alternative to the tented camps or land lodge compounds that many other tour operators use. located 30 minutes closer to the best area for sighting jaguars, the jaguar flotel & suites is an air-conditioned floating hotel. this optimal location combined with administration by biologists, highly trained jaguar spotters, and a unique fleet of radio-equipped scout boats have enabled all guests visiting in past years to see jaguars multiple times..
In the early days when tourism in this region was getting started, the flotel was mostly used by sport fisherman. The jaguars became accustomed to hearing their motorboats going up and down the rivers. For the flotel to accommodate tourists, it needed some updates and TLC. This will be our 10th year staying at the Jaguar Flotel & Suites, and we’ve seen outstanding improvements by the management team, including “floating suites” with larger and more comfortable rooms, a better variety of quality food, and of course, a friendly accommodating staff. Lectures about animals and birds of the area occur nightly after dinner in their new air-conditioned lounge.
Other tour operators will stay at hotels in Porte Jofre at the end of the Transpantaneira Road. The Jaguar Flotel & Suites is located 30-40 minutes up the river from Porte Jofre. If staying at Porto Jofre, you have to travel up the Cuiabá River each day to get to where the majority of jaguars live. Not only would you be traveling more by boat each day if staying at these land lodges, but you wouldn’t have a place to go for a bathroom break or a place to stop for lunch between searching either. Many people don’t realize how important it is to be at the right location to view wildlife in this area. We feel if you’re going to spend the money to do an expedition like this, you should be as close to the jaguars as possible!
We’ll begin our full day searches for jaguars along the riverbanks in the radio-equipped boats. Our boats are the most stable and fastest on the river. When we get the jaguar call on the radio, we have the boats to get us there! The Jaguar Flotel & Suites offers the highest probability of any Pantanal camp of seeing the Big Three South American rainforest mammals: the jaguar, giant river otter, and tapir.
A number of the giant river otter groups that live nearby are quite habituated, permitting superb photo opportunities of these hyperactive, entertaining “river wolves.” Monkeys and numerous species of birds can also be seen.
We’ll do our best to track jaguars for optimal viewing and photography. We’ll ride in comfortable motorboats connected by radio to search for the cats in the narrow and wild rivers. July through October, the driest months in the Pantanal, is the prime time to spot jaguars; many of them are at close range for extended periods of time. Often they can be seen on the riverbanks resting, drinking water, hunting prey, or swimming.
All photographers will have two seats (with plenty of room!) in the jaguar search boats for gear and the ability to photograph from both sides of the boat. Dan and guests will rotate between the boats. We usually have two large boats—depending on the group size—and may have a midsize boat too. The boats are built well, quick for jaguar calls, and sturdy to photograph from—you can even stand up in them with no issues. Other groups use smaller boats that are slower and less sturdy. Patience is always needed. Wildlife tracking can be hard, long days. This is not a zoo. On this trip you’re venturing out to see jaguars in the wild, which can be challenging.
Here is a wonderful video NE Explorer Donna Archer created from our 2018 jaguar trip.
All camps in the Pantanal are NOT EQUAL 10 reasons this is the BEST jaguar camp
- We’ll wake up and go to sleep in the middle of jaguar country (and have lunch there with a snooze after lunch). We’re where the action is, 24/7. Since we’re staying where the cats live, we’ll be out searching one to two hours earlier and can stay longer in the field than competitors.
- Our camp keeps close track of which cats are active, where they are, and what they’re doing.
- We have the only camp with a systematic radio network linking all boats, and there is a central control tower that coordinates how and where our boats should go to see any cats that one of our boats find.
- Scout boats with radios help us to find more cats.
- Meals are eaten where the jaguar are. We’ll never take you from a sitting jaguar unless you vote to leave (we WILL take people away one by one for a bathroom break and then return them to the boat).
- No other tour operator has information with maps of where the cats live.
- Our tour operators have tested all speeds and distances from the riverbank and know which speeds and distances produce the best results for jaguar sighting.
- Our tour operators carry out scientific research on the cats by building up a profile of their use of time (a so-called “ethogram”).
- The Jaguar Flotel & Suites is right in prime jaguar country. The competing lodges have cement block houses 40 minutes away from the central jaguar zone.
- We work with the only operation that has a full-time biologist on staff to help coordinate data collection and give lectures.
Friday, September 1 (B, L, D)
After an early breakfast, head back on the Transpantaneira Road to Cuiabá. We’ll check into our hotel, located within a forest in the city. Enjoy various bird life around the hotel, including ibises and possibly macaws. Group farewell dinner this evening. Overnight at the “green” hotel in Cuiabá.

Patience is always needed for wildlife photography. This trip is considered low activity. You have to be able to get in and out of a boat and carry your own camera gear. You have to be able to get along with others! We stay at the best hotels and lodging available in the areas we’ll be visiting, but all are very basic.
Average temperatures range from 75-90 °F. If we are moving on the boats, the heat is not so bad with the breeze off the water. July, August, and September are hot months. It is quite dry and not as humid and stuffy as it is in the Amazon. Bring a good hat that covers your neck and a lot of sunscreen. Cold fronts are possible in July, so morning safaris could be cool. Bring a fleece/jacket.
Jaguars can be seen ANY time of day which is unlike most large mammals. These cats can get up to 300 pounds and love to swim. We may see three jaguars or fifteen; each trip is different. Be prepared for long, hot days on the water while searching for jaguars. Sometimes the viewing is limited, but at other times we’ll be able to watch them while they hunt, swim, relax, mate, etc. Every day is different. Some days it’s easy to spot a jaguar, and then you may go a day without seeing one. Odds of sightings have been predictable over the years, even more than we originally expected.
There are also a lot of birds and other animals to photograph while touring. Often you will stop to photograph a bird or caiman and then out of nowhere a jaguar appears. They can be anywhere, so sometimes just stopping, listening, and observing the area can be rewarding. All of these animals and birds live in jaguar country too, so we encourage you to enjoy all the Pantanal has to offer.
The Transpantaneira can be a BUMPY road; conditions vary year to year. The standard bus size is 21-passenger. Please pack as light as possible and make sure all your bags have name tags on them. We know many will have big camera bags and understand this, but please do not bring hard-cased luggage—only duffel roller-type bags.
Our group will have two large boats—either 12 or 14 seats with 6-7 guests per boat—with a possible third midsize boat. We will try to keep couples together on the same boat if this is their preference. Our goal is for each guest to have a full row in the boat to themselves and some outings with Dan in your boat. If a mechanical issue arises with a boat, we will do our best to fix the situation. We will have to work as a group to try to deal with circumstances that may arise. We’ll be in a remote area. Our local tour operator tries very hard to keep equipment working smoothly but things can happen. These boats are running full days every day for five months.
As this area becomes more popular, more tourists come to the area. Sometimes sightings of the jaguars are private, and at other times there can be multiple boats. It can be busy with boats. This is not always pleasant. However, more boats on the water equals more eyes searching, giving everyone a better opportunity to see more jaguars. Try to be courteous of your fellow travelers and people in the other boats. The jaguars do not fear multiple boats, but it can get frustrating at times trying to photograph. Each trip is different, but be prepared to not be alone most of the time while viewing the cats. Our boat drivers are experienced and great at maneuvering the boats. They are by far the best; they understand a photographer’s needs. It all depends on the cats, how long we’re out searching, and the weather.
Trip rates typically rise yearly due to increased overhead by our tour operator. It’s our goal to give you the best value possible. As when working in any increasingly popular destination, we have little control of overhead costs that may arise.
We prefer to fill the majority of the lodges with our guests rather than share with other groups, if possible. We would rather be around our own peeps! If there is a couple requesting to book the last space, we will add one additional guest to the group. We will often do this as a courtesy to regular guests. We appreciate your understanding on this matter.
Passport and Visa
US citizens must carry a valid US passport when traveling to Brazil for any purpose. One blank passport page is required for the entry stamp.
Beginning June 17, 2019, Brazil visas will no longer be required for US, Japanese, Canadian, and Australian citizens for stays of less than 90 days.
Please visit the US Department of State – Bureau of Consular Affairs for the most up-to-date entry, exit, and visa requirements.
It is always best to make sure you are up to date with your routine vaccinations and to check in with your doctor or a medical professional ideally 4-6 weeks before travel. Recommended (but not required) are:
- Routine such as MMR, DPT, polio
- Hepatitis A and B
- Yellow fever
Almost everyone in Brazil speaks Portuguese. Our guide will speak English. Less than 5% of Brazilians speak English!
Typical long and short-sleeved field clothes. Waterproof jacket. One sweater or fleece, in case a light cold front appears (it can happen!). No boots needed—only sneakers and sandals. Good sun hat. A list will be sent to everyone closer to trip time with additional details. Please pack light! No hard luggage—duffel bags are preferred. There is laundry service at the land lodge and at the Jaguar Flotel & Suites for a small fee of approximately $2 per piece.
Camera Gear
Closer to trip time, Dan will phone each guest to discuss camera gear needs, and we’ll also send a list of suggested items to bring. Tripod or monopod can be used on the boats. Many handhold most of the time, including Dan.
Typical Food
Chicken, beef, catfish, in various manners. Beans (vegetarian) and rice at every lunch and dinner. A lot of fresh fruit, vegetables and salads. Potatoes, pasta. All simple but hearty.
Air Conditioning and Wi-Fi
Both locations along with our hotel in Cuiabá have air-conditioning along with complimentary Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi usually works quite well, but it is never guaranteed.

Testimonials from Natural Exposures' Explorers
"Brazil is my favorite photographic trip so far. I could not have asked for a better bunch of fellow travelers, and I loved being out on the water enjoying the weather. The wildlife was spectacular and the photographic opportunities limitless. Dan and Tanya did a fantastic job coordinating everything, and the guide was very informative about The Pantanal and its wildlife."
Sue Roehl , Florida
"Prepare to be amazed and overwhelmed with the natural beauty of the Pantanal and the incredible diversity of the wildlife. The food is great, the people are great and all of the logistics were executed without a hitch. Dan and Tanya have this trip dialed in!"
Ken Longley , Washington
"Dan and Tanya put on an awesome photo tour, and this one is among their very best! I expected them to be wonderful hosts and to have thought of every detail (they did!), but I was completely taken aback by the depth and breadth of the photo opportunities. Great Jaguar sitings, adorable Capybara, Caiman galore, Giant River Otters, monkeys, Coatimundi, fox, Anaconda, and every kind of bird you can imagine (Toucan, Hyacinth Macaws, Jabiru Storks, etc. etc.). This is a must-do trip for photographers. Get there before it is spoiled!"
Dane Jaques , Virginia
"Thanks for putting together an amazing wildlife viewing and photographic experience. The entire trip was fabulous from beginning to end. Jaguars galore, birds, cayman and adorable capybara! I was in heven and I will be back. Thank you Tanya and Dan! "
Alison McClure , California

Jesse Salwen , North Carolina
"The best of four photography trips (with different companies) I have been on."
Marie Llewellyn , Staffordshire, UK
"Hope they all have as much fun and good luck as I did. Thank you again for a great trip. The guys at my camera store thought the sunset with stork was a purchased postcard! Gosh, I must be getting good."
Bonnie Wilsey , Wisconsin
"The adventure of seeing the Jaguars "up close and personal" was Fantastic!! But also, being able to see a Tapir and other exotic animals, reptiles & birds was like the icing on the cake!"
Lani Dillon , California
"We were all adults, from diverse backgrounds, in our playful energized mode sharing experiences and love of photography in a world of wonderment. Thank you Dan and Tanya for making it happen!"
Marty Salwen , North Carolina
"Thank you, Dan, Tanya and Fisher for making this glimpse into the nature in the wetlands of the Pantanal possible!"
Meggi Reader , California
" I agree with the above! A wonderful experience, not to be forgotten."
Carol Clark , Washington
"What a wonderful place. The Pantanal is spectacular and you guys (including Kike, who is a treasure!) took care of every detail. I hope to travel with you again soon."
Freddy Gamble , New York
"Amazing experience. Jagaurs were promised and delivered!"
Jane Norris , Virginia
"An incredible experience - I personally had 19 separate jaguar sightings in 4 1/2 days - 5 the last afternoon! Am definitely going to come again."
Jeff Nadler , California
"Yes, what a super holiday indeed; one never to be forgotten with all the excitments, the hot sun and the river bath on the last stretch before the coach home to the airport, the Jaguars almost every day, and the splendid gathering of people. It really was great! Thank you both very much for organising everything so efficiently. Even to the Toucans calling us to arise, from outside our bedrooms. Alyson certainly knew his subject in ornithology, and many notes were taken for my future reference. Both of us were pleased to learn from you a little more about our respective cameras. Maybe you will not receive this e.mail until you are back in Cuiaba, but on behalf of both of us, thank you very much again for a tremendous expedition."
Roger LIewellyn , England

Wolf Photography Tour
For wildlife photographers seeking the opportunity to observe and capture images of wild wolves the Great Bear Rainforest experience tops them all.
Your guide, Tim Irvin, has a Master’s Degree in ecology and has partnered with local First Nations guide, Marven Robinson. Both Tim and Marven have spent years getting to know the territory and habits of a local sea wolf pack.
While wolves can be elusive, Tim and Marven have a very high success rate having seen wolves on every expedition since they began offering the tour in 2017.
What to Bring
Lens Selection
A long lens (400mm and up), a wide angle and everything in between is what I recommend for this Wolf photography tour. Every wolf encounter is different and while close up shots are readily available, I encourage you to take full advantage of the the landscape for environmental shots. Having a variety of focal lengths will ensure you’re ready for any given situation.
Here’s my recommended kit for reference:
- 500-600mm F4
- 1.4 extender
- 2 camera bodies
The following is a list of the clothing you will need for your Wolf photography workshop adventure. The weather along the BC North Coast varies greatly from cold and rain to warm and sunny and everything in between. Proper clothing is essential for your comfort and enjoyment during the trip. We will be camping and shooting for long periods of time in all weather. When selecting your clothing, keep in mind the following principles about staying warm and dry.
Layering. It is very effective to wear layers of clothing to stay warm, as the air trapped between the layers acts as an insulator. Layering also allows you to regulate your body heat by adjusting the number of layers, depending on the temperature and your activity level. There are 3 main layers: Transfer which is the layer next to your skin; Insulating which is the main warmth layer(s); and, Protective which is the outer layer to protect you from wind, rain, and other elements.
Keeping Dry. Wetness increases the loss of body heat and is uncomfortable, so it’s important to stay as dry as possible. Some clothing is hydrophobic, and therefore, stays dry (i.e., synthetics such as polypropylene, polyester, capilene, and natural fibres such as wool and silk).Clothes made of these materials make great expedition clothing. Be careful of other materials (e.g., cotton and down), because they are absorbent and stay wet. Also, avoid overdressing as it can cause excess perspiration and therefore wetness.
Your Camera Gear:
If you wish to discuss specifics regarding which camera bodies and lenses you own and which ones are best suited to the trip, your photography guide will be happy to discuss that with you.
On the trip, your camera gear is best kept in a waterproof case or pack. It is crucial to keep gear dry while sitting in the rain. We strongly encourage you invest in a rainproof cover for your camera – both AquaTech and Think Tank Photo make excellent models that fit most cameras.
We encourage you to bring plenty of memory cards and/or ample hard-drive space or storage devices – the area is exceptionally photogenic and you may easily experience once-in-a-lifetime scenes. No drones allowed!
A sturdy tripod is recommended for long telephoto lenses.
What’s Included
What’s Included:
- Your wolf photography workshop includes 6 or7 full days of shooting
- All boat transportation from Prince Rupert to our camp, return.
- Food and accommodation
- Expert local guide
- Not Included:
- Flights to Prince Rupert
- Food and Accommodations in Prince Rupert
Travel Details
Our camp is located on boats to consolidate the human presence and reduce our impact on the wolves. The only good places to pitch tents interfere with wolf travel corridors. This is why we do not allow people to bring their own tents – it is too much of an imposition on the animals.
Sleeping accommodations are in a communal plywood cabin outfitted with bunks. There is a second communal cabin for meals, relaxing and downloading photos. There are chemical toilets in our camp, but there are no showers.
Guests need to bring a sleeping bag, and anything else they need to sleep comfortably (We will provide a packing list).
We will focus most of our time in a location where we are familiar with the local wolf pack. However, to protect the wolves, we will not reveal the specific places we will go. What we can tell you is that these are island-dwelling wolves.
The islands we will visit are part of the outer coast of British Columbia’s archipelago. They are home to ecosystems not found on the mainland. They are also home to wolves that make much of their living from the sea. There are no bears on the outer islands, so wolves have no competition as the top carnivores here.
On these 6 and 7-Day expeditions, we will delve into the fascinating world of the coastal wolf. This adventure is specifically designed to provide you with the best possible opportunities for watching and photographing these elusive and beautiful carnivores and learning about their ecology. It is also an opportunity to camp out close to nature and immerse yourself in a wild corner of the Great Bear Rainforest that few people ever witness.
Expectations
Although the coast of British Columbia is a wildlife haven, the reason we are successful on these expeditions is that we focus specifically on wolves. Immersing ourselves in their world is the best way to increase our chances of success. Nonetheless, we can also expect to see a lot of birdlife including ospreys, sandhill cranes, peregrine falcons, bald eagles, and a host of shorebirds, all set within a backdrop of a beautiful and unique coastal landscape.

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]
· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.
Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.
The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.
This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.
The Best Things to Do in Moscow
1. explore the red square.
The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.
The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.
2. Check Out the Ziferblat
The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.
Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.
For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .
3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral
St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.
St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church
4. Explore the Kremlin
The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.
5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum
Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.
There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.
6. Wander Along Arbat Street
The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.
7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre
As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.
8. Visit the State Historical Museum
The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.
The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.
9. Wander Around GUM
GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.
While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.
10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour
While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.
It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.
How to Get to Moscow
Flying to moscow.
Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.
Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.
I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.
Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in my post about finding cheap flights that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow
Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.
Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.
If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.
How to Get Around Moscow
METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES
Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.
The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.
Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.
But wait; there’s more!
The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.
Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.
The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.
In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.
How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?
Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!
I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.
Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.
If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.
When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?
There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.
We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.
If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.
The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.
Is Moscow Safe to Visit?
While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.
In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.
Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.
To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.
If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.
Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.
Is Moscow Worth Visiting?
Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.
While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
That’s all we have for you about Moscow! I hope this post was helpful as you plan your trip to Russia’s capital.
