Natural Wonders

Santorini island sightseeing doesn’t have to be glamorous. Some of the best things to see in Santorini are natural wonders. The island’s history, topography, and climate make it the perfect playground for adventure-seekers .

Our map of Santorini includes a couple of incredible options to experience the natural world.

It isn’t often that you have an opportunity to visit an active volcano! These are some of the most popular Santorini sightseeing tours.

If you take a look at the Santorini island map, you’ll appreciate how the volcano has shaped the region’s morphology . Volcanic eruptions here have been responsible for decimating thriving populations, creating a series of islands, and adding unique characteristics to the region’s beaches.

view of Santorini volcanic islands in the distance, caldera

These tiny islands are the result of the volcano’s most recent activity. When visiting Nea Kameni, you’ll have a chance to hike across the black lava rocks. At Palaia Kameni, you’ll get to enjoy the therapeutic effects of sulfur hot springs . Enjoy your mud bath while you take in the sweeping caldera views.

Santorini volcanic islands in the distance

Nea Kameni and Palaia Kameni are some of the most exciting Santorini island tourist attractions. This region can only be accessed by boat, so you will need to book a tour.

You’ll find Skaros Rock just west of Imerovigli on the Santorini walking map. This is the best place to go in Santorini for panoramic ocean views .

You can easily walk to Skaros Rock from Imerovigli in under 15 minutes. However, the most popular trek starts in Oia. The hike from Oia to Imerovigli is just over 5 miles and takes about 2 hours to complete . Along the route, you can turn off and head to Skaros Rock.

Skaros Rock in Santorini

This hike is one of the fun and free things to do in Santorini . It’s also one of the cool things to do in Santorini in winter when the weather is milder.

Along the hike, you will be able to soak up spectacular views of the coastline . It’s one of the best places in Santorini to ditch the crowds.

Ammoudi Bay is one of the most epic Santorini island attractions. It is most easily accessed from Oia . You can get there in under 15 minutes walking. Fair warning, the path is frequently trafficked by donkeys and mules so you will have to watch your step!

Ammoudi Bay in Santorini

This is one of the most popular Santorini tourist places because of the unforgettable caldera views, sparkling turquoise waters, and quaint seafood restaurants . The bay is surrounded by domineering red cliffs on one side and jagged black-rock beaches on the other.

view from rock in Ammoudi Bay

One of the most fun Santorini adventure activities is at Ammoudi Bay. Plan to bring some water shoes and hike out towards the black rock beaches. From here, you can swim a short distance to Saint Nicholas island and jump off of a cliff! It is one of the most thrilling and unique things to do in Santorini.

It’s pretty easy to find out where to go (just follow the other tourists). Many climb up the cliff face towards the jumping ledge. Although, there are also stairs on the opposite side of the island. Regardless of how you get up to the ledge, jumping off is one of the activities to do in Santorini that you’ll never forget.

Cultural Sites

Let’s not forget the cultural sites on this Santorini Greece map. Including fun Santorini activities like wine tasting, beachgoing, and visiting the Akrotiri lighthouse .

Within this map, there is a Santorini beach map, just select the beach layer and deselect the other layers.

Santo wines Santorini

Wineries are marked by purple pins with martini glass icons on the Santorini sightseeing map. You’ll find many wineries towards the center of the island. Wineries are some of the most visited attractions in Santorini. The most popular wineries to visit include Santo Wines and Venetsanos Winery .

Santo Wines and Venetsanos are popular Santorini destinations because their venues feature incredible views of the caldera, volcanic islands, and surrounding cliffs . These wineries are near one another, only a 12-minute walk away! You can also get to them in 30-minutes driving from Oia, or 15-minutes driving from Imerovigli.

Santo Winery is on a massive and luxurious estate. They have plenty of indoor and outdoor tables to accommodate large numbers of flocking tourists. Santo Winery also offers winery tours for guests looking to learn more about this unique viticultural region .

The flagship grape gown on Santorini is vinsanto. The island is best known for producing dry white wines with complex flavors and minerality stemming from the volcanic soils. You can expect a glass that is crisp and refreshing.

Book a sunset winery experience in Santorini.

If you would prefer a more intimate winery experience, Venetsanos Winery is the best place to visit in Santorini. Venetsanos is a smaller winery with an interesting history . Built in 1947, this was the first industrial winery built on Santorini. As you explore the property, you can view historic wine harvesting machinery as well as antique furniture.

You’ll find an assortment of fabulous beaches on the map of Santorini beaches. From rocky shores to black sands, there’s something for everyone! Luckily for budget travelers, visiting beaches is one of the best free things to do in Santorini.

If you are looking for beaches with premier amenities, consider Kamari Beach or Perissa Beach . Both beaches feature distinct black sands and offer access to lounging, restaurants, water sports , and a variety of other activities. They are located on the Eastern shores of Santorini, not far from one another.

Experience horseback ridging on the beach in Santorini.

Red beach in Santorini

Kamari features a more refined experience while Perissa offers a more relaxed, party vibe . Visiting Perissa Beach is one of the recommended things to do in Santorini for families since there is a water park on-site.

The Red Beach is the best place in Santorini to see sparkling red sands . It’s considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece, and it’s located near the Akrotiri archeological site. This is a rocky and narrow beach without amenities.

Red beach in Santorini

Perivolos Beach is the best place to escape the crowds. Located on the southeastern side of Santorini, Perivolos has some amenities but much generally fewer tourists. You can get sun loungers and drinks, as well as entertainment and rentals. The shores are a bit pebbly with characteristic black sands . Visiting a beach is one of the best things to do in Santorini Greece.

Visiting the Akrotiri Lighthouse is one of the interesting things to do in Santorini Greece. It’s located at the Southwestern tip of the island near the Akrotiri site. You can get there in a 45-minutes driving from Oia or 30-minutes driving from Imerovigli.

Akrotiri Lighthouse

This privileged spot offers some breathtaking views of the Santorini coastline. The lighthouse was built in 1892 and is the oldest lighthouse on the island. It remained in operation until WWII.

Watching the sunset here is one of the unmissable activities to do in Santorini Greece. Imagine caldera cliffs, red beaches, and volcanic islands in the distance. Bring your swimsuit and take an evening swim on the red beach. This is one of the best places to visit in Santorini Greece during sunset.

Ancient History

No detailed map of Santorini would be complete without including the unique archeological sites on the island. While you visit Santorini, you won’t miss the giant crater that makes up its topography.

The Santorini crater is a reminder of a massive volcanic eruption that took place around 1600 BC. The eruption obliterated life on the island, but the ash cloud resulting from the eruption served to protect some of the art and architecture of the Minoan people.

The Minoans are a bronze age civilization that inhabited Santorini island as early as 2,000 to 3,000 BC . It is due to their fascinating history that many of the Santorini points of interest are archeology museums.

Visiting archeological sites and museums are some of the most fascinating things to do in Santorini island.

Akrotiri is located on the southwest side of Santorini. It’s a 30-minute drive from Imerovigli and a 45-minute drive from Oia.

The Akrotiri site is one of the most important Santorini tourist spots. It is the most well-known Minoan site outside of Crete. At Akrotiri, scientists have unveiled multi-level structures, streets, and walls reaching 8-meters . It’s pretty mind-blowing to think that this was built 4,000 years ago!

Archeologists have discovered loom workshops, masterful masonry work, and ornate wall paintings at Akrotiri . This civilization had running water and advanced pipe systems! You’ll also get to see impressive objects such as pottery and furniture.

Discover why this site is one of the Santorini top attractions.

The Museum of Prehistoric Thira is located in Firostefani on this tourist map of Santorini. It’s one of the top-rated things to see in Santorini for history buffs. The museum displays a huge collection of art and objects recovered from the Akrotiri archeological site .

If you don’t have time to visit the archeological site during your Santorini sightseeing, be sure to stop by the (more conveniently located) museum.

As you explore the museum, you’ll walk through time starting all the way back in 3300 BC! You’ll be impressed by the delicate jewelry, sturdy ceramics, ornate ritual objects, and exquisite paintings . There are also some early examples of Cycladic marble figurines. Visiting this museum is one of the top things to do in Santorini Greece.

The Thera site is one of the lesser-known Santorini attractions . While it is one of the most interesting Santorini Greece attractions, visiting here is one of the most uncommon things to do on Santorini island.

The Thera site is the second most important archeological site on the island. It’s located at the top of Mesa Vouno Mountain and offers fantastic coastal views . This is where the Spartans arrived in 8000 BC. They built paved roads, drainage systems, and minestrone buildings.

Within the archeological complex, you can view the remains of an ancient theater, bathhouses, a market, and several religious monuments (pagan and Christian) . Getting up close and personal to this sophisticated prehistoric society is a must-do in Santorini.

Visiting the Thera site is one of the fun and educational things to do in Santorini with kids.

Located in the town of Fira on this Santorini attractions map, the Archeological Museum of Thera is the best place to view objects recovered from the Thera site. Particularly if you don’t have time to visit the Thera site, the museum is one of the recommended places to see in Santorini.

Much of the artifacts at the museum come from the excavations at Mesa Vouno Mountain. Statues, clay figurines, amphoras, and cookware items have been recovered . Some vases were recovered from Akrotiri. These are some of the top things to see in Santorini.

This is a small and centrally located museum that’s well worth your time . Visiting here is one of the best things to do on Santorini’s hot, sunny afternoons.

First time Santorini: top tips to have the best time on this famed Greek isle

Dec 7, 2021 • 5 min read

Summer sunset over the Greek town of Oia and the Mediterranean Sea.

Santorini is a dazzling star of the Greek Islands, and it's extremely popular with tourists © Andrew Mayovskyy / Shutterstock

Santorini is the supermodel of the Greek islands, a head-turner whose face is instantly recognizable around the world: multicolored cliffs soar out of a sea-drowned volcanic crater, topped by whitewashed buildings.

With its reputation for dazzling panoramas, romantic sunsets and volcanic-sand beaches, it’s hardly surprising Santorini features on so many travelers’ bucket lists.  If you're planning to join the crowd, here’s what you need to know for your first trip to Santorini .

Part of the Cyclades island group, Santorini (officially known as Thira, a name that encompasses the volcanic islets within Santorini’s orbit) sits in the Aegean Sea, roughly halfway between Athens and Crete.

The island is shaped like a wonky croissant, and the neighboring islets hint at the fact that Santorini was once circular. It was known as Strongili (the Round One). Thousands of years ago, a huge volcanic eruption caused the center of Strongili to sink, leaving a caldera (or crater) with towering cliffs along the east side, now Santorini’s trademark landscape.

Whitewashed buildings on the island of Santorini, Greece

Beyond the views, Santorini's vineyards and volcanic beaches

Santorini’s commercial development is focused on the caldera-edge clifftops in the island’s west, with large clusters of whitewashed buildings nesting at dizzying heights, spilling down cliff-sides and offering gasp-inducing views from land or sea.  Fira , the island’s busy capital, sprawls north into villages called Firostefani (about a 15-minute walk from Fira) and Imerovigli (the highest point of the caldera edge, about a 30-minute walk from Fira). A path running through these villages is lined with upmarket hotels, restaurant terraces and endless photo opportunities.

These three conjoined settlements draw most visitors, together with the stunning and quite exclusive village of Oia in Santorini’s north. There’s a growing number of hotels in the island’s south, offering caldera views to the north and northeast. Akrotiri’s views come cheaper than Oia’s, but it’s a fair way from the action of Fira.

Santorini’s east coast is lesser known than the celebrated, elevated west coast. Here, the caldera-edge heights have sloped down to sea level, and volcanic-sand beaches and resorts offer a very different drawcard. East coast resorts such as Kamari and Perissa have a more traditional (and more affordable) island-holiday appeal: sunlounger-filled beaches, water sports, bars and taverna-lined promenades. The east coast’s beaches are lined with black sand. On the south coast, there’s a string of beaches famed for their multi-colored sand. The dramatic Red Beach is a traveler favorite.

The island’s interior is dotted with vineyards and traditional villages that let you see beyond the tourist hustle. Make a stop in Pyrgos for great eats and a wander through charming backstreets.

Food, archaeology,  open-air cinema: things to do in Santorini

Sure, Santorini's views will stop you in your tracks and you'll get great glimpses into how A-listers travel, but there’s plenty more to explore, from a gorgeous open-air cinema to a cool microbrewery , wine caverns adorned with artworks, and cooking demonstrations and classes  that celebrate Santorini’s growing foodie culture.

The obvious prime activity on Santorini is to walk the caldera edge and admire the views. Walks in and around Fira are spectacular, particularly heading north to Firostefani and Imerovigli along the caldera-edge pathway. Keep walking and you’ll eventually reach Oia, but be aware that this is no small undertaking and the trail beyond Imerovigli can be rough. It’s about 5.6 miles (9km) in all, and a good four-hour walk, one way.

Santorini’s lauded wines are its crisp dry whites and the amber-colored, unfortified dessert wine known as Vinsanto. Both are made from the indigenous grape variety, assyrtiko . About a dozen local vineyards host tastings (usually with a small charge) and some offer food, with scenery and local produce combining to great effect. Start your investigations at  SantoWines .

Santorini’s intrigue reaches deep into the past, with the fascinating site of Akrotiri displaying a Minoan city destroyed by the volcanic eruption of 1613 BC. In Fira, the impressive Museum of Prehistoric Thera helps piece together the story of ancient Akrotiri.

Nature’s handiwork is on display from any waterfront seat come sundown, but prime sunset-viewing on Santorini is in Oia, where thousands of tourists flock to admire (and applaud) nightfall.

Any tour your heart desires can be organized, and there are dozens of agencies ready to help with winery visits, archaeology tours, sunset-watching and more. The most popular option is a cruise, and the classic itinerary takes in the caldera’s volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni, including a stop at the former’s crater and the latter’s hot springs.

Accommodation with a view in Santorini comes at a price

If you can afford it, first-timers to Santorini should stay on the caldera edge to experience the full "wow" factor. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia have hotels and villas with whitewashed interiors, terraces and infinity pools that have inspired marriage proposals, high-fashion photo shoots and many Instagram posts.

Unfortunately there are not a lot of places to stay in these view-blessed locales for budget-conscious travelers: caldera-view accommodations come at a premium, and they are in hot demand. You'll also need to book well in advance.

There are decent midrange options in Fira and Firostefani (less so in Imerovigli and Oia), away from the front-row panoramas. There’s also a great hostel and a budget-friendly campground (with rooms) on the outskirts of Fira.

If you’re more interested in a beach break or activities, stay in Perissa or Kamari (and catch the bus into Fira). The advantage of this is some respite from the camera-toting caldera crowds, plus more reasonable prices.

The best times to visit Santorini without the crowds

Peak travel time to Santorini is July and August, when prices soar and hotels, viewpoints and beaches are packed with tourists. The shoulder season months of April, May, early June, late September and October are better times to visit. Things are marginally quieter at the caldera edge, and considerably quieter on the east coast (where accommodation bargains are plentiful).

Don’t discount a winter break, when crowds are scarce (and prices low) while the scenery is still breathtaking. Santorini is working on positioning itself as a year-round destination.

Tourists board the ferry to Santorini island at the port of Heraklion, Greece

Reach Santorini by ferry, catamaran or plane

Frequent ferries and high-speed catamarans link Santorini with Athens’ main port of Piraeus, Crete and various Cycladic islands. Check  OpenSeas  for ferry timetables. Santorini Airport has year-round flight connections with Athens, and summertime European connections. On the island, bus services are decent, if crowded in summer. Lots of companies also offer cars, mopeds and ATV four-wheeler bikes to rent.

Santorini: a dazzlingly beautiful island in Greece. Discover its iconic whitewashed cliff-side villages, with deep sapphire domes and colorful decorative flowers covering the buildings. Combine this with the postcard-worthy sunset at Oia and you can understand why it is one of the most popular islands in Greece! Whether you’re visiting for a holiday, or as your romantic honeymoon destination , this travel guide includes all the things to do in Santorini, as well as budget tips and the best hotels.

14 Things To Do in Santorini

Santorini is a relatively small island, and driving from North to South by car takes roughly 45 minutes. The island is part of the Cycladic Islands that are located between Athens and Crete. Despite its size, there are still many things to do in Santorini. Below are our top recommendations.

1. Wander the streets of Oia

Oia is without a doubt the most beautiful town in Santorini. One of the best things to do is stroll up and down the many white steps, through the narrow streets, discovering cozy taverns. Get ready to grab your camera, as around every corner is a new surprise. The bright white houses and blue domes are truly iconic to Greece, and Oia certainly won’t leave visitors feeling disappointed.

santorini greece oia

It doesn’t take long to explore Oia, as a return journey from the boulevard to the sunset point will only take about 30 minutes. Enjoy a delicious lunch while you’re here, as there are plenty of choices for food and drinks.

Because it is arguably the best thing to do in Santorini, it can get crowded in the narrow streets, especially during sunset. However, a visit to Oia is really worth your time.

Tip: It’s recommended to wear proper shoes as the streets and paths can be slippery and uneven.

2. Oia’s unforgettable sunset

If there’s one thing you must do on Santorini, then it’s watching the sunset at Oia. Gather for sunset at the Castle of Oia, where you can sit on the castle wall. Alternatively, sit closer to Agia Ekaterini for the iconic views that are found on every Greek postcard. Please note that it can get jam-packed during the high season, so we recommend you take a spot at least an hour before sunset.

3. Discover Fira in Santorini

Fira (Thira) is the capital of Santorini and also one of the island’s most visited spots. There are loads of great restaurants and a shopping area. However, the real eye-catcher is the narrow back streets and hidden chapels to explore—for example, the Saint Minas Holy Orthodox Church and the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist.

santorini greece fira

On the cliffside, there’s a cable car going up (that’s impressively steep) from the old harbor. This is where the cruise ships dock. Unfortunately, donkeys are still being used here to transport the cruise people up 500 steps. Please use the cable car, or the steps, instead of riding on these beautiful animals.

Firostefani

After passing the cable car point, you will enter Firostefani – a smaller, much more laid-back town directly attached to Fira. Walk to this viewpoint overlooking the church, with the three bells. This town is good to base yourself in, as it is the center of the island. This means you’ll have all the things to do in Santorini within a 30-minute drive.

4. Hike from Fira to Oia

Santorini has an incredibly scenic hiking trail along the cliffs, 10.5 kilometers long (6.5 miles). The trail runs from Fira to Oia, with many height differences and climbs, and can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours to complete. The path is meant for pedestrians only, which means it’s beautifully peaceful.

5. Imerovigli

Situated at the highest point on the cliffside of Santorini Island is Imerovigli. This tranquil and picturesque village is far less visited but just as impressive as Oia, particularly as it also has white chalked houses, churches, and blue domes. What’s more, it has endless views of the shimmering sea and looks directly onto the imposing rock of Skaros and volcano. To top it off, you’ll find many delicious restaurants with an unforgettable sunset view.

Good to know: Imerovigli is located in between Fira and Oia.

6. Hike up Skaros Rock – One of the Best Things To Do in Santorini

Skaros Rock is a large rock formation that overlooks the entire area. Whilst visiting Imerovigli, it takes only 15 minutes to hike up to Skaros Rock . Once there, you will find the ruins of an old Venetian fortress, which was once considered the capital of Santorini.

On the backside of Skaros is a beautiful white church overlooking the sea. Finally, if you’re looking for the most spectacular view, climb to the peak of Skaros Rock.

7. Explore the island by ATV or motorcycle

A refreshing breeze, the smells of the salty sea, and the feeling of freedom; what’s better than discovering all the things to do in Santorini on a motorcycle or ATV/quad? It is the ideal way to discover the island because you have the freedom to drive wherever you like and park pretty much anywhere. This makes it a great alternative to a rental car. We do have to mention a rental car is much safer and the comfort of airconditioning can be very welcome at sometimes. ( Book a local rental car here )

Or book a cruise for the day and go around the island instead. ( See the cruises here )

santorini transport atv

Locals say an ATV/Quad is much safer than a motorcycle; however, if you’re comfortable and used to a motorcycle, the prices are much lower. Personally, we also find these easier to drive. One great plus about the ATV/Quad is that it usually has a large trunk to pack your bags while traveling around the island.

Prices for renting an ATV/Quad or Motorcycle on Santorini

Renting can be done through your hotel or directly at one of the many rental shops. Depending on the season you can expect to pay anywhere from 18 to 30 euros a day for a motorbike and 30 to 45 euros for an ATV/quad. The more days you rent it for, the more discount you can expect to receive.

8. Visit villages

Besides beautiful Fira and Oia, there are other, much less visited, villages that are well worth a trip during the daytime.

Megalochori

Get lost in the alleyways of Megalochori, famous for its beautiful architecture, mansions, and caves houses, as well as the iconic churches with blue domes! Within the village’s main square, you will find many traditional taverns and cafes.

About 8 kilometers away from Fira is the small and slightly undiscovered village Pyrgos. Here you can find a stunning castle, narrow picturesque streets, and panoramic viewpoints . In fact, Pyrgos is at the highest point of the island, providing a great view of both sides of Santorini.

Lunch tip: Have lunch at Brusco, a well-decorated cafe in the middle of town.

9. Visit Red Beach

Santorini’s Red Beach is one of the unique beaches Greece has to offer. The red color comes from the red volcanic cliffs that slowly break down. The beach is not necessarily great for sunbathing, but it’s worth the trip to the south part of the island. To get there, you will have to pass through the village of Akrotiri before eventually reaching the parking lot where the small chapel is located.

santorini things to do red beach

Keep in mind that there’s a slight danger of falling rocks, as many signs will tell you. Accessing the beach is, therefore, at your own risk. Alternatively, you can visit Red Beach during a boat trip .

10. Go on a wine tour

The assyrtiko wines of the Greek Islands are well-loved for their unique taste. Instead of growing the vines vertically, they are grown in baskets on the ground. This allows the vines to tap into the volcanic soil that contains moisture instead of needing to be watered (water is a scarce resource on the island).

winery santorini

The yield of wineries is low, making it a more exclusive wine. Growing them in this way also provides more coverage against the island’s notoriously strong winds.

wine tour

We booked a wine tour on Santorini at Gaia Wines , and it was much more interesting than initially expected. Besides having a tasting experience, we also learned about harvest and the chemical reaction during the wine-aging process. The wine tastings can be paired with a platter of local cheeses and bread at their uniquely located terrace – right by the sea under the shade of trees. Bliss!

11. Perissa Beach

Have you done all the things to do in Santorini? Or maybe you’re simply wanting a day of relaxation? Head over to the black sand beach, lined with umbrellas, named Perissa Beach. The beach is a long stretch of sand with many comfortable beds, sat below the restaurants situated on the other side of the street. Perissa village is a popular seaside resort that mainly attracts young people and backpackers.

Either rent a bed for the day or pick a free spot to put your towel down. Once you’re comfortable, sit back and enjoy the sunshine and a refreshing swim in the Santorini sea.

Did you know? Regular sunscreens are toxic for the corals and animals in the sea. Learn about reef-safe sunscreen .

12. Archeological sites in Santorini

Santorini Island has two major archeological sites from different times in history. The first is the ancient and well-preserved city of Akrotiri . It is the most important site found on the island and in the entire Eastern Mediterranean. Akrotiri is protected by a modern roof, which provides shade for those visiting during the daytime.

Ancient Thera is the second archeological site of Santorini, located on the top of the Mesa Vouno Mountain. Here, you can find the remains of a church, temples, shrines, and a theater.

Both sites are perfect things to do in Santorini on a day trip with your rental car or ATV.

Book an archeological tour on the island here.

13. Ammoudi Bay

A great thing to do in Santorini is to visit Ammoudi Bay. This small port is tucked away below Oia, and fantastic seafood restaurants are lined along the clear waters. It is famous for romantic sunset dinners, and it is also the starting point for many boat tours that visit the Volcano and Hot Springs.

santorini greece ammoudi bay

Getting to Ammoudi Bay can be done via the 280+ steps going down next to Oia’s Castle or by car or taxi. When using the stairs, it’s recommended to wear proper shoes as each step is wide and the surface mostly uneven. A third option offered is riding on the back of a donkey, but we highly discourage this.

ammoudi bay

14. Santorini Volcano and Hot Springs

A huge volcanic explosion happened a long time ago on Santorini Island. As a result, the island’s center sank and, ultimately, reshaped the island into a crescent. This is the reason why the island has these extreme cliffs.

There is still a volcano near Santorini that you can visit on a day trip. It’s a short 10-minute boat trip, followed by a walk to the active craters. ( Book a volcano tour here online ) Because of the volcano, there are natural hot springs to be found nearby. Here, you can swim in the sea and experience the unusual feeling of the warm hot spring water mixing with the normal sea temperature.

Where to eat

It’s true that Santorini is definitely not cheap, but when it comes to going out for dinner you have a lot of options in every kind of price category. For vegetarians, and sometimes vegans, there are also plenty of options available at most restaurants.

Our favorite restaurants in Santorini were:

  • Pelican Kipos in Fira (Greek, European)
  • Paradox in Oia (Thai food)
  • Salt & Pepper in Fira (Greek)
  • No Name Grill in Firostefani (Seafood, Greek)
  • Karma in Oia (Greek)
  • Katharos in Oia (Vegan Meze Bar)
  • Forno in Kamari (Pizza & Pasta)
  • Tranquilo in Perissa (Vegan)
  • Brusco in Pyrgos (European)

Where to stay on Santorini

The best area to stay in Santorini is close to or in Fira, the capital. It is close to all the things to do in Santorini, and additionally, you have to option to use the local bus. We stayed at in this hotel.

As for hotels in Santorini, you can go as crazy as you like. Prices of the hotels range from 50 to 500 USD on average with the extremely luxury easily exceeding that. Don’t worry, there options for every kind of budget. ( See all hotels on the island )

How to visit Santorini

There’s no surprise that Santorini, and all its many things to do, attract a lot of visitors. In 2019 alone, the small island, with a population of only 15,500 people, received over 2 million tourists!

Getting to Santorini

Santorini Island is well connected with daily ferries from the mainland ( Athens ) and many other nearby islands like Milos or Mykonos. The ferries are fast, comfortable, and generally faster than flying from nearby destinations (especially if you count the time it takes to check-in). During the high season, from March to October, there are also direct ferries to other popular islands.

Check the ferry tickets and prices here .

santorini greece ferry

Santorini Airport

Flying to Santorini is another option, as there are many direct flights to/from other European cities outside of Greece. For example, Paris or Amsterdam . Thira Airport is located on the east side of the island, and a taxi from the airport to Fira costs about 20 euros.

Getting around Santorini

Santorini is the perfect holiday-sized island, particularly as you can drive from North to the South in about 45 minutes. This allows you to explore the island in just a couple of days; however, we would recommend 4 nights/5 days as the perfect length for all the things to do in Santorini.

things to do santorini greece

Santorini car rental

Feeling more comfortable driving a car? This is a safe and great option. Additionally, cars will come with AC, which is an advantage over being exposed to the sun on the ATV. There are many car rental locations on Santorini Island. For example, Santorini Airport, the port, or within the larger villages.

We recommend to rent a car in Greece through Sunny Cars with free cancellation and insurance included. Book your rental car here .

It’s recommended to book a rental car ahead of your trip, particularly during the high season. During this time, if you leave it until the last minute, you might not find an available rental car.

Public transport in Santorini

A great, and definitely the cheapest, way of getting around Santorini is to use the local buses. You can get a bus to pretty much anywhere on the island but you always have to use Fira (capital city) as the hub for all transfers. Therefore, if you’re planning to use the bus, we recommend getting a hotel in Fira too.

A one-way ticket costs about 2 euros, and the timetable per destination can be found on the operator’s website .

santorini public transport

ATV or Motorbike rental

The most versatile way to get around Santorini is by renting an ATV/Quad or motorbike. It’s a fun way to explore the island as you can get anywhere, and it’s relatively cheap as well. The downsides are that it’s less safe, and on long drives, you’ll get way too much sun.

Depending on the season, you can expect to pay anywhere from 18 to 30 euros a day for a motorbike and 30 to 45 euros for an ATV/quad. The longer you rent it, the more discount you can expect to receive.

Although we wouldn’t recommend exploring the island by taxi, they are useful to get to the ferry port, to the airport, or to get from one town to another. Generally, a taxi from the harbor to Fira (15 minutes) is about 25 euros.

Your Budget for Santorini

Santorini is definitely one of the more expensive islands of Greece, especially between June and August when the price of accommodation and flights double. Credit cards and European cards, like Maestro, are widely accepted. Because of this, it’s not necessary to carry a lot of cash on you.

Costs of Traveling in Santorini

Travel on a budget in Santorini, from $300 − $770 USD weekly per person, mid-range $790 − $2770 USD, and high-end from $2670 − $4650 USD. However, costs depend on factors like accommodation, transportation, and activities. We did not include flights. Check flight prices here

Best Time to Visit Santorini

May to June, or September to October, is the best time to visit Santorini. The weather is usually around 20-25 degrees, with a cool breeze flowing over the island. At this time, prices haven’t reached their highest point, and there are far fewer tourists on the island.

Please note: If you’re visiting between November and April, many restaurants and hotels will still be closed. However, this could be a great opportunity for you to see a quiet Santorini.

I am going to Santorini in July for a family wedding. I know it will be peak season and super hot. Would you have any tips relating to quiet times to visit attractions? I am 34 and my mum is 69 (I feel the heat will be too hot for her).

Hi Grace, we’d recommend visiting attractions first thing in the morning, ideally around sunrise. This is when places are most quiet, and it’s cooler. Have a great trip!

The Towns of Santorini: The Complete Guide

tourist map santorini

The villages of Santorini are remarkably varied. Considering that this is an island of barely 28 square miles, with a population of about 15,500 people crammed close together in about a dozen places, the different character of each settlement is fascinating. The distinctions among the towns are also worth knowing before you go because it can make a big difference in the kind of vacation you have once you get there.

By the way, there are no actual towns on Santorini. The whole island (and the nearby island of Thirassia that faces it across the caldera) is part of one municipality, Thira (also the official Greek name of the island and the posted destination of ferries and flights from within Greece). Nevertheless, for visitors, it's useful to understand how these settlements differ.

TripSavvy / Lauren Breedlove

The colorful village of Oia (pronounced EE-ya ) is perched on the cliffs of Santorini's volcanic caldera, on the northern tip of the island. The village is a listed historic monument, and its residential alleys and lanes were the first in Greece to be listed as an archaeological historic monument by the Hellenic Tourism Association.

The town developed as a mostly seafaring community with troglodyte dwellings below the main street (pedestrianized Nomikos Street) carved into the face of the caldera housing sailors and crew. The more substantial, bourgeois houses above are known as captains' houses and were built for shipowners and officers. Being high up, they had a good view of their vessels passing from the port to the other islands in the Cycladic chain and northward to mainland Greece and the rest of Europe. After the departure of the Ottomans in 1850, Santorini supported more than 150 vessels that carried the island's wine across the Aegean and the Mediterranean. Ironically these days, it's the most prestigious and luxurious five star hotels that crawl over the face of the caldera.

Things to Do: Oia today is famous for sunset viewing from the ruins of Oia's Byzantine castle, probably the most famous spot on Santorini. That's because there is an unobstructed view westward, making it the perfect spot to watch the sun set into the sea. Every evening, thousands of people crowd the tight little streets and winding steps of Oia for the sunset. On the days when cruise liners dock in Santorini, the streets are as packed as Times Square on New Year's Eve. Wait until half an hour after sunset and the streets, shops, and restaurants will be much less crowded.

Very high-end shopping is Oia's other modern claim to fame. Shops offer jewelry and casual resort fashions at high prices. There are some tempting ceramics and artwork, but there are also quite a lot of overpriced souvenirs, mass produced for the tourist market.

After you've negotiated your way past all the shops, follow the main street northeastward around the tip of the town. There's a bright yellow photogenic church and beyond that are a couple of lovely Cycladic windmills. Stop for a bite at the modest looking meze cafe,  Elinikon,  to sample local beer and freshly made  ntomatokeftides.

From Oia, there are steps (300 of them) winding down to Ammoudi Bay, a pleasant little port and beach with a taverna offering fresh seafood. Don't worry, there is also a road and taxi drivers brave enough to negotiate it, so you don't have to come back up the steps after a good night out.

TripSavvy / Moncia Farber

Imerovigli sits at the highest point of the caldera with the very best views of Nea Kameni, Santorini's black volcanic island in the center of the lagoon. There are those who will also tell you that the sunset views from Imerovigli are better than those of Oia.

This is a very quiet, mostly residential place with exquisite hotels hiding behind nondescript gates that give nothing away. Some of Santorini's best hotels are here in the caves below the clifftop path on the face of the caldera.

Things to Do: The town has a few mini-markets, a hairdresser, a snack bar, and a few restaurants. There is very little to do here beside luxuriate by your private hot tub or hotel pool, but the village is a short taxi or bus trip to Fira, the main village on the island. It's a three-kilometer walk downhill. If you do walk down, don't try to walk back up in the heat of the day—there is no shade at all.

If you have a head for heights, try hiking across the narrow path to Skaros. The ruins of this medieval castle are really nothing more than a dramatic rocky headland that is something of a symbol of Santorini. Skaros castelli is probably the oldest of the castle remains on the island, and at one time, an entire village was built on its slopes. You will have to use your imagination because earthquakes and volcanic eruptions altered that landscape centuries ago. Along the way, stop to catch your breath and take in the views from the small church of   Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis.

Tips: If you walk any distance, take the clifftop path rather than the paved road. There are no sidewalks, and it can be very nerve-wracking when cars and enormous buses come barreling along the narrow road.

For dinner with good sunset views, book the Aegeon Restaurant  on the clifftop path in Imerovigli. The restaurant serves reasonably priced, traditional Santorini and Greek island fare from a spacious terrace with views of the village and the volcano.

Firastephani

Gunter Grafenhain/Getty Images

Between Imerovigli and Fira lies the tranquil settlement of Firastephani. On the edge of this village is the Monastery of Agios Nikolaos, founded in 1651. It's not open to the public, but its blue domes make terrific souvenir photographs.

Firastephani sits atop some of the most breaktakingly steep cliffs on the caldera. There are very few dwellings and hotels set into these cliffs. Once you enter the village, there is a small, tree-shaded "balcony" on the edge of the cliffs. If you are hiking from Imerovigli to Fira, it's a good place to take a break, have a cool drink in the shade, and enjoy the views.

Things to Do:  Just north of the village, visit the Underground Exhibition Tunnels of the Thera Foundation at the  Petros M. Nomikos Conference Center . Art exhibitions are held in these cool, well lit tunnels. They cost just a few euros to visit, and the tunnels are a good place to take a break from the scalding sun. There's a wonderfully framed view of the red Nomikos Conference Center building from the picture window at the end of the exhibition.

Alex Bujor @35mmprime.com/Getty Images

Fira is the capital of Santorini. It's where the cruise ships come in and send their passengers up the cable car from the port to the town. It's also where you can catch a bus for 2 euros to virtually anywhere else on the island. (Be warned though, most buses aren't air conditioned, and their windows stay closed.)

Fira is the busiest town on Santorini and there is a lot to do.

Shopping:  This is where islanders and working people shop for themselves, so while the town has its share of little boutiques and souvenir shops, it also has a lot of more normally priced shopping for things you might actually need—new memory cards for your camera, toiletries, and more.

Shops selling souvenirs, natural sponges, scented soaps, and handicrafts are crammed into an area of very narrow paths and lanes in the northern part of the town. It feels like a Middle Eastern bazaar.

Continue south, and the town spreads out and opens up. This is where you'll find affordable clothing, shoes, dry cleaning shops and laundromats, photography studios, mobile phone shops, and even a mall, the Fabrica Shopping Center on Gold Street, near the Orthodox Cathedral.

Eating, Drinking, and Nightlife:  Fira is packed with restaurants for every taste and budget. The main square is a kind of an open-air food court with lots of inexpensive takeaway places and cafes. There are even several Chinese buffet-type restaurants (Santorini is popular with Chinese honeymooners). Along the Caldera, the restaurants with views have the priciest menus. This part of the island is also where bars and music clubs stay open late. The Two Brothers Bar has DJs and is popular with the late night party crowd. The Tango Bar specializes in champagne and cocktails for a more sophisticated scene, but it also has DJ nights and full moon parties.

Culture:  Fira has two of the island's outstanding museums. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera  showcases many of the finds uncovered on Santorini's remarkable Minoan site, Akrotiri. They include painted ceramics, amphorae, colorful wall paintings, and jewelry.

In the Archaeological Museum , finds from digs on Santorini include sculpture from the Archaic to the Roman period, inscriptions from the Archaic to the Roman period, and vases and clay figurines dating from the Geometric to the Hellenistic periods. The red and white geometric patterned archaic pottery is especially interesting.

Santorini Travel and Tours

Santorini is a complex of overlapping shield volcanoes. The island location is 36.4N, 25.4E and the elevation is 1,850 feet (564 m). It is 80 sq. km. South East Greece, in the Aegean Sea; one of the Cyclades islands. Some of the cliff is thought to be a caldera wall associated with an eruption 21,000 year ago. Santorini’s population last measured in 2002 was 11.000 people.

According to tradition, Santorini was first settled by Phoenicians and later by Laconians under the leader Thera. In 631 B.C. colonists from the island founded Cyrene in N Africa. From the Middle Ages until the 20th cent. Thira was known as Santorin, for St. Irene, the protector of the island. See Villages

  • Discover the famous white and blue houses
  • Wander in picturesque narrow alleys
  • Enjoy chic boutiques and luxury hotels with infinity pools
  • Admire magnificent views of the caldera.

Well, you’re lucky: Fira has all of this!

It’s the perfect Cycladic town, a real postcard scenery.

Wander in the city’s alleys and discover the breathtaking viewpoints of the sea and the caldera. You will for sure fall in love with the island (even if it’s often crowded!).

From Fira, follow the beautiful walking trail to reach the villages of Firostefani (only a 10-minute walk) and Imerovigli (the highest point of the caldera, 30 minutes away from Fira). Plan at least between 1 and 2 hours , as you will stop every 2 meters to enjoy the view and take pictures!

You can also walk to the small port of Fira Skala. It’s quite easy to get down the 587 steps, but getting back up can be more difficult, especially under the sun!

If you’re too tired to walk, take Santorini’s cable car. During this nice ride, you will admire the island from a different angle. A one way ticket costs 6€.

You can also get a ride on a donkey, but I wouldn’t recommend it, as the animals are often abused.

If you’re a History lover, or if you want to know more about Santorini, you can visit 2 museums in Fira:

  • The Museum of Prehistoric Thera , exposing vestiges discovered in Akrotiri (I will tell you more about it later) and other archaeological excavations on Santorini.
  • The archaeological museum  and its collection of remains from all Santorini, including vases from Akrotiri.

Fira is also a great place to enjoy the nightlife in Santorini: you will find the island’s best bars, restaurants and night clubs!

Try to visit Fira early in the morning, to avoid most of the crowd. The temperatures will be cooler and your stroll will be more pleasant.

Fira

Together with Fira, Oia is the other must-see tourist attraction in Santorini.

As in Fira, you will be amazed by Oia’s pretty white houses, churches with a blue dome, and splendid views over the entire caldera!

Oia is also known as the best place to enjoy the sunset in Santorini . At the end of the day, thousands of people are coming to the city for Santorini’s most famous show.

When you’ve found the perfect spot to admire the sunset, sit down and don’t leave it!

And if you’re looking for a quieter and more romantic atmosphere, you should book a table in one of the many bars and restaurants . Watching the sunset while enjoying a drink is for sure an amazing experience.

Just keep in mind that you’ll be asked for a minimum order amount per person. Don’t worry: as the drinks are quite expensive, this amount will be easy to reach.

The best place to watch the sunset in Oia is the Byzantine Castle. Be there at least 1 or 2 hours before, so you can get a good spot.

Santorini

Boat trips are among the best things to do in Santorini.

The most famous tour is a 1-day cruise in the volcanic islands and Palea Kamini hot springs.

During this day, you will explore the island of Nea Kameni and its still active volcano. You can even walk to the summit of the crater!

You will also stop at Palea Kameni hot springs to take a dip.

Then, you will end your day on Thirassia island, located right in front of Santorini.

As these tours are very popular, you should really book yours in advance. It’s very easy, you just have to click on the button below to view the cruise details and book it. For only 37€ per person, you will get the bus transfer from and to your hotel, an audio guide, the cruise and the 3 stops at the volcano, the hot springs and Thirassia!

Boat trip Santorini

You can also choose a luxury version of this cruise, on a catamaran.

You will sail around Santorini, and enjoy 3 stops for swimming, including one at the hot springs. Snorkeling equipment is even included!

The price includes the minibus transfer from your hotel, the guided tour, the Greek Barbecue and unlimited soft drinks.

At the end of the day, you will also admire the beautiful sunset from the sea.

You’re going to Santorini?

You probably know it: the hardest part of planning your trip is to find an hotel offering a good value for money!

The closer you get to your travel dates, the harder it will be to get a good deal. Lots of people will be visiting Santorini on the same dates as you , so you can be sure that the best deals are booked extremely quickly!

Hopefully, there is a pretty simple solution to this problem: do like me and book your hotel as early as possible!

So, my best advice is to take 5 minutes (now) to have a look at the list of travelers’ favorite hotels in Santorini.

And if you see a good offer, book it!

Most hotels offer free cancellation, so it’s quick, easy, and you will avoid the the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

To check the current best deals for your hotel in Santorini, simply click on the green button below 😎:

Once you’ve booked your hotel, it will be time to continue reading this guide and find out more about the best things to do in Santorini!

If you want to enjoy magnificent viewpoints of the island and the caldera, you should hike from Fira to Oia.

A 9-km long marked trail on the edge of the caldera connects the 2 cities. You will stop many times to take beautiful pictures, as the view is just breathtaking! It’s clearly one of Santorini’s best points of interest.

This marked trail isn’t really difficult, even if the weather can get really hot on sunny days.  So, it’s better to hike in the morning or at the end of the day. You can for example plan your walk to arrive in Oia for the sunset.

From Fira, you will reach Oia in about 2 hours . You should however plan a bit more time, as you will for sure stop a few times on the way to enjoy the panorama and take pictures.

For the hike, it’s easier to park your car in Imerovigli than in Fira: there will be more parking spaces. As you will only walk from Imerovigli to Oia, you will do the Fira-Imerovigli part of the trail when visiting Fira.

You should hike from Fira to Oia, and not from Oia to Fira. The most beautiful part is the view over Oia at the end of the trail.

It’s impossible to do a definitive guide about Santorini without mentioning the best beaches of the island.

If you want to take a dip in Santorini, the most famous beaches are:

  • The beaches of Perissa, Perivolos and Agios Georgios: large black sand beaches with snacks and taverns
  • Kamari Beach, another large black sand beach, where you can rent deckchairs and enjoy many nautical activities.
  • The Red Beach, named after the volcanic ochre cliffs surrounding it. You can get there in only 5 minutes by a trail.
  • The White Beach, right next to the Red Beach. You will need take a boat to get there.
  • Vlihada Beach and its white rocks.
  • Monilithos Beach, ideal with children with its shallow waters.
  • Kolumbo Beach, only accessible by foot, and frequented by nudists.

Red Beach Santorini

At the main beaches, you can also enjoy a few amazing water sports!

I won’t hide it, my favorite water sport in Santorini is for sure the 1h30 jet ski tour with an instructor.

You will also have the choice between several different routes starting from Périvolos. You will be able to discover the beaches and the volcano of Santorini!

It’s really an unforgettable experience that needs to be booked in advance by clicking on the button below:

During your trip to Santorini , you can also try other great activities. Simply click on the links to book them in advance (they are extremely popular):

  • Jet ski rental from the Perissa beach
  • A first dive with an experienced instructor or a dive on one of the most beautiful spots in Santorini if you’re an experienced diver.
  • A parasailing session , to enjoy a panoramic view of the island!
  • A kayak tour (small group), to discover the most beautiful landscapes of Santorini from the sea and without the crowds
  • A windsurfing course
  • A Stand Up Paddle excursion (always in small groups)
  • A Flyboard session or of Hoverboard , the 2 trendy activities on the island!
  • Take a kiteboarding course for beginners or rent a kiteboard if you are more experienced.

Amoudi Bay is a small fishing village located below Oia.

You can get there walking down the 300 steps stairway starting from Oia. You can also drive there, but if you do, don’t go to the end of the road, as it’s difficult to turn back. Just park your car along the road and finish on foot.

From Amoudi, the view of the ochre cliffs and Oia is really beautiful.

There are also a few nice taverns and restaurants on the seaside. It’s perfect if you like fresh fishes!

And, if you want to take a dip in the sea, follow the trail after the restaurants. You will find a nice place to swim and dive into the water.

Ammoudi Bay Santorin

Wine Tours are among the most popular activities in Santorini. The island is renowned for its excellent white wines, known as some of the best in Greece.

You can visit many vineyards (known for being the oldest in the world!) on the island, and taste the best wines.

Here is the program of the best wine tour in Santorini:

This wine tasting tour in Santorini lasts around 5 hours and allows you to visit several wineries . During your day, you will visit 3 vineyards:

  • Boutari vineyard
  •  Gavalas traditional winery
  • The Estate Argyros.

You will also taste a dozen of Santorini’s best wines, including the traditional Vinsanto and Nykteri!

This tour includes the transfer from your hotel, an Oenologist guide, and an access to the vineyards. You will be in a small group of 8 people maximum, making this semi-private visit really enjoyable.

For more information and to book your tour, simply click the button below (it must be booked in advanced).

Wine Santorini

If you’re interested in Santorini’s History, the ancient site of Akrotiri is one of the island’s best place to visit.

This archaeological site is often compared to Pompeii, in Italy . Akrotiri is an ancient Minoan city destroyed by a volcanic eruption in 1,613 B.C. It was only rediscovered in 1967 during an archaeological excavation. The site is one of the most important in the Aegean Sea.

The archaeological excavations are still on going in this very large site. Many remains are probably still undiscovered!

In Akrotiri, wooden footbridges allow you to walk in the city. There, you will admire the ancient buildings, the streets and many ceramics.

Unlike Pompeii, the city of Akrotiri was uninhabited when the eruption occurred, as no human remains or valuable objects were found on the site. What happened to these people? No one knows yet if they moved elsewhere on the island, or sailed to Crete .

During your trip to Santorini, you will certainly go to Fira and Oia. But don’t miss the island’s other villages!

  • Pyrgos is Santorini’s highest village. It’s a typical Cycladic village, with a traditional architecture and splendid views of the island.
  • Megalochori, with its picturesque narrow alleys.
  • Messaria, in the middle of the island and the vineyards.
  • Emporio, where you will find the Goulas medieval castle at the village’s entrance. There are also many small churches.

villages Santorini

To visit some of the villages of Santorini and get off the beaten track, you should opt for a quad bike tour with a guide .

The itinerary is really nice since it allows you to go through places where you would not necessarily have ventured by yourself or by car.

You will discover, among others, Emporio and its Venetian castle , the village of Megalochori , and stop at many viewpoints overlooking the caldera. You will also enjoy a tasting session in the oldest wine cellar of Santorini.

The tour lasts 3h30 and is a small group tour with a maximum of 6 people, which makes this quad bike tour in Santorini even more enjoyable!

To book your quad bike tour in Santorini , simply click on the button below:

If you feel like taking advantage of your trip to Santorini to try other activities , you’ll find my selection of the best excursions and activities right here: The 17 best excursions in Santorini.

Wanna see Santorini from the most amazing viewpoint?

Let’s take some height and go on a helicopter tour in Santorini!

It is the best way to admire the splendid landscapes of the island, the caldera, the volcano and the traditional white houses of Oia and Fira.

And for an even more incredible experience, you can also opt for the sunset tour . From the sky will certainly be the only place on the island where you can admire the sunset without the crowds!

It’s really the perfect romantic activity, and a great idea for a surprise gift.

You need to book your helicopter tour of Santorini by clicking on the button below:

The Ancient Thera is another archaeological site in Santorini.

“Thera” is the ancient name of Santorini. In the Middle Ages, the island was then named “Santa Irini” by the Venetians which finally became “Santorini”.

Located on Mesa Vouno Hill, Thera was founded in the 9th century B.C. During your visit, you will admire many vestiges from the Hellenic, Roman and Byzantine periods. Take a stroll and discover the remains of the temples, the agora, the theatre and the gymnasium.

You will also enjoy a nice view of the surroundings.

Ancient Thera

The island of Thirassia is located just in front of Oia.

This crocodile-shaped island was separated from Santorini by a huge volcanic eruption.

If you want to visit Thirassia, you can choose a 1-day boat trip (the one going to Nea Kameni’s volcano and hot springs also stops there) or take the boat directly from Amoudi Bay.

The island is way quieter than Santorini. During your visit, you will enjoy the charming village of Manolas and its good taverns, and enjoy a splendid view of Santorini!

Thirassia

No matter if you’re on a family trip or a romantic gateway in Santorini, you should definitely go watch a movie at the open air Cinema.

The Kamari Open Air Cinema , or Cinekamari, is an outdoor movie theatre located in the middle of the forest. It’s a really original and nice place to watch a movie.

From May to October, you can see movies in English (subtitled in Greek) every night starting from 21h30. It costs 8€ per person.

There’s also a bar on the site.

Don’t hesitate to check the official website   for more information.

Outdoor movie theatre Santorini

If the cinema is a bit too classical for your taste for an evening in Santorini, you should rather head to the most famous show of the island: The Greek Wedding Show .

This open-air show skillfully mixes theater, comedy, music and typical Greek dances on the theme of a traditional wedding.

You will even be invited to the wedding banquet where you will be served an assortment of Greek mezze accompanied by fine Santorini wines. And you will not deviate from an old tradition of any good Greek wedding: breaking the plates!

The show is really of excellent quality, very entertaining and immersive . You will really feel like you have been invited to a wedding.

The Greek Wedding show takes place every night at 9:30 pm in Fira and lasts 2 hours.

You must book your seats in advance by clicking on the button below:

If you feel like doing a a bit of shopping in Santorini, it’s very simple: you will have to go to Oia or Fira .

The 2 most famous villages of Santorini concentrate all types of stores: clothing, luxury, jewelry and souvenirs . You can also find traditional Greek handicrafts and art galleries .

However, do not expect to find good deals because the prices are quite high compared to the rest of Greece.

What are the local specialties you should try?

Among the typical dishes of Santorini, you can try:

  • Bean puree made from a specific bean of the island, the fava
  • Tomato fritters made from a local tomato variety
  • Saganaki, cheese wrapped in filo pastry and fried
  • Minced meatballs
  • Moussaka , which is of course one of the most famous dish in Greece
  • Gyros, the best option for a cheap meal in Santorini!
  • Fish , which you can try in one of the taverns in Ammoudi or on the east coast of Santorini

If you’ve seen most of Santorini, you can take the ferry and visit the islands located nearby:

  • Ios, the closest island to Santorini. There, you can relax all day at the beach and party all night long.
  • Amorgos , the best place to hike, there are many marked trails.
  • The Small Cyclades , if you want to enjoy quieter and less touristic islands (at least for the moment!).
  • Naxos for its beautiful beaches
  • Mykonos, where you can dance all day and night long with the best DJs in the world!

If you want more details about the other islands around Santorini , you should read my detailed article: The 15 best Cyclades Islands .

You can also visit  this website   to check the ferries rates, schedules and book them.

Ideally, you should spend at least 3 days in Santorini. You can visit Fira and Oia on your 1st day, then explore the rest of the island, go on a tour, or relax at the beach during the next 2 days.

Here are my recommended Santorini itineraries depending on the duration of your stay:

You’re spending 1 day in Santorini? Then, you will have time to visit the island’s most famous villages!

Here are the best things to do in Santorini for 1 day:

  • Start your day in Fira. Visit the city, and go to Firostefani and Imerovigli, the 2 villages nearby.
  • Have a drink on a terrace, and stop in one of the 3 villages for lunch.
  • After a good meal, it’s time to hike from Imerovigli to Oia.
  • Then, visit the magnificent village of Oia.
  • If you still have some time (and if you’re not too tired!), walk down the stairs to Amoudi Bay.
  • Enjoy the sunset in Oia, the best place to admire it in Santorini.

If you don’t feel like walking too much, you can take a guided bus tour . You need to book it in advance here.

During the day, you will visit the archaeological site of Akrotiri , then stop at the Red Beach and discover the village of Emporio. You will also swim in Perissa, taste wines and admire the sunset in Oia.

This excursion is a great way to discover the best of Santorini in only 1 day!

For more details, you should read my dedicated article: One day in Santorini .

You must know that  staying in Santorini,  especially in the villages of the  caldera like Oia and Fira , is  quite expensive.

Wondering where to eat in Santorini? What are the best restaurants in Santorini?

If you want to enjoy authentic cuisine (and avoid the many touristy restaurants), I recommend you:

  • Pitogyros, a tavern located in Oia and serving mainly gyros. Very good, fresh and not greasy, it’s approved by Voyage Tips!
  • Karma: a restaurant located in Oia serving an excellent cuisine at an affordable price for Santorini. I recommend their tomato fritters, fava with caramelized onions and moussaka!
  • Romantica in Firostefani: a good traditional cuisine, a very pleasant welcome, hearty and tasty dishes, we do not ask for more.
  • The cave of Nikolas: restaurant located at the waterfront in the old port of Akrotiri. A must if you like fish!

If you want to eat in any restaurant in Santorini, you should better have a reservation!

Most restaurants located on the caldera are far from being better than the ones located a little further away. Don’t be mistaken: you are only charged for the view and not for the quality of the food.

If you want to visit Santorini, you have 2 possibilities to get there:

  • By plane: Santorini has an international airport. Many companies offers direct flights, or connecting flights via Athens . The airport is located only 10 minutes away from Fira and 25 minutes from Oia.
  • By ferry boat: you can take the ferry from the Port of Piraeus (close to Athens) to Santorini. The journey times varies depending on the boats size and speed. It takes between 5h30 and 8h, and the prices are starting from 40€ per person.

There are also daily ferry connections between Santorini and other Greek Islands. You can get there from Naxos , Paros , Mykonos, Amorgos …

If you want to plan a ferry trip in Greece, and especially in the very touristic island of Santorini, you should book your tickets in advance.

Click the button below to check the schedules, compare prices and book your ferry tickets.

If you haven’t rented a car for your trip to Santorini, (personally, I recommend you to rent a car to make the most of your stay – more about it below), you should book a transfer from Santorini airport or port in advance .

It’s the easiest way to be taken directly to your accommodation on the island upon arrival. This will save you from waiting for a bus or a cab.

Book your airport or port transfer by clicking here!

If you want to visit Santorini, you should really rent a car. It’s the most practical way to discover the island, especially if you’re staying a few days. You can also rent a quad bike to reach some remote beaches, but in general, you can get everywhere in Santorini by car.

One of the nice surprises I had during my trip to Santorini is that all the parking spaces are free!

Whenever I’m renting a car abroad, whether I’m in Greece, in Malta or in Spain, I always book my cars on Rentalcars.com . It’s my favorite website for the following reasons:

  • You can compare prices between all the car rental companies in Santorini. Choose the cheapest, or the one with the best customer’s reviews!
  • You can get a “Full Protection Insurance” to be fully refunded in case of accident or theft (They have refunded me more than 1200 euros to date)
  • Cancel or modify your booking in 1 click!

Last but not least: they offer the “Best Price Guarantee” . If you find the same car cheaper elsewhere, they will refund you the difference! Click the button below to check rental cars prices in Santorini now:

On Voyagetips.com , I give you all my best tips and itineraries to plan your trip to Santorini and Greece by yourself. (Click here to read all my articles about Greece)

However, if you prefer to book a Greece tour with a travel agency , I recommend you to check the 10 best Greece tours by clicking the button below:

If you want to rent a boat for a nice day at sea during your trip to the Greek islands, you should book it with Samboat.

Motorboats, sailboats, yachts, small boats without a license, with or without a skipper: they simply have the most complete offer for boat rental.

So, what are you waiting for to book your boat trip in Greece? 😊

I have made a tourist map of Santorini for you , to help you picture what the island looks like and where the best places to visit are located. You can display the map legend by clicking on the top left button (the one with a little arrow).

Now that you know more about the best things to do in Santorin, what do you plan to visit during your trip?

The ferry port is Athinios Port , also known as the “New Port” or “Thira Port.” The Old Port of Santorini (aka Skala) accommodates cruise ship tender boats and some private tour boats. All passenger and car/passenger ferries serving Santorini arrive and depart at Athinios Port. The Santorini Ferry Port is located on the southwest side of the island, about 8km (by road) south of Santorini’s capital town of Fira , 20km south of Oia , and 9 km west of Santorini airport . Athinios is a very busy port, especially during the summer high season, with many ferries departing and arriving daily. For the number of passengers it serves, Athinios Port is very small; it tends to be crowded and can be confusing.

Map of Santorini Ferry Port

Santorini Ferry Port Transportation Passengers boarding a ferry at the Santorini ferry port. Athinios Port is much too far from any Santorini town to be walkable, so transportation will be needed no matter where on the island you’re staying. Options are bus, taxi, private car or shuttle service, and private transfer arranged via your hotel. Generally, taking the bus is the easiest and cheapest option. Be advised that most areas in Greece, including Santorini, have public transportation strikes throughout the year. These strikes affect all forms of transit, including, buses, trains, ferries, flights, and taxis. During strikes no buses, no ferries, and only a handful of trains and flights will depart on time (or at all). Taxis tend to be the least affected mode of transport, but in Santorini a taxi is hard to come by on a good day. Though strikes can occur any time, there is always a huge strike on May 1. Avoid booking any ferries or flights that day .

Buses at Santorini Ferry Port From the Port : Santorini public buses to Fira, the island’s main town and transportation hub, wait at Athinios ferry port after every ferry arrival. They are located to your left as you disembark the boat. Stow any luggage you have either below the bus – the driver will usually be waiting outside the bus to sell you your ticket and direct you, if not you’ll purchase your ticket onboard. Tickets are cash only and cost €2.30/person; the trip takes about 20 minutes. If you are staying anywhere other than in Fira, you will need to change buses (and purchase an additional ticket) to your final destination; timetables are clearly posted at the Fira stop. Buses on Santorini are cheap, comfortable, fairly frequent, and generally reliable. The main bus stop in Fira can seem chaotic, but it’s actually pretty easy to navigate; the only time I don’t recommend taking the bus is if you require a bus change to Oia and you’re traveling with luggage – the Fira-Oia route is extremely popular and it can be difficult to secure a spot for yourself (above) and your luggage (below) at the same time. The current timetable can be found on the KTEL bus official website . To the Port : The bus to Athinios ferry port in Santorini only departs from Fira; if you’re staying somewhere else, you’ll first have to take the bus to Fira and then change buses (and buy an additional ticket) to Athinios port. The Fira-Athinios bus schedule changes daily in accordance with the ferry schedule, and is posted one day in advance; it is not listed on the website timetable.

Bus and taxis at the Santorini ferry port.

Public buses and taxis at the Santorini ferry port.

Taxis at Santorini Ferry Port There are very few taxis in Santorini . Sometimes there will be a few waiting at the port after the arrival of a ferry, but’s it’s not guaranteed – if so, you’ll find them to the left as you disembark the ferry. If there are no taxis waiting, or if you’re not one of the first passengers off the boat to snag one, you could be in for a long wait. Instead of relying on a taxi from the port, travelers who are unwilling to take the bus should book a private transfer in advance. Santorini taxis are unmetered, with prices negotiated before starting your trip. If a price is not agreed upon in advance, you’re stuck paying whatever the driver asks upon arrival. A taxi from the ferry port to Fira, Firostefani, or Imerovigli should cost about €30 to €35; €30 to €45 from the port to Oia. Expect taxis to be more expensive in the evening and after midnight. Taxis on Santorini only accept cash in euros, and cannot be paid for by credit card. All taxis in Greece have a strict four-passenger limit. Private Car and Shuttle Service at Santorini Ferry The best way to get a private transfer from the Santorini ferry port is to pre-book with Welcome Pickups . Prices are determined and paid for in advance, so everything is taken care of before you arrive. After booking your ride you’ll be sent a confirmation email, followed by a photo of your driver so you’ll know exactly who to look for at the port. Your driver will monitor your ferry in case of late arrival, and be waiting for you upon arrival at the port with a welcome sign. Child car seats can be pre-ordered in advance of your trip. Welcome Pickups costs about the same as a pre-booked taxi (€35 to €40 to Fira, Firostefani, or Imerovigli; €40 to €50 to Oia), but because they’re pre-paid, you won’t need to worry about having cash on hand. Car Rental & Parking at the Ferry Port RentalCars.com is the best site for renting a car at the ferry port. On the search results page select the “Santorini Port” option. There is only one ferry port on Santorini. (It is usually cheaper – and can be easier too – to pick up your rental car from the airport.) In my experience, it’s easiest to pre-book a Santorini rental car online through RentalCars.com . They use reputable international brands and their easy-to-use website makes it simple to find the best deal. If you’re arriving at the Santorini port, the best pick-up locations are either Downtown Fira (take the bus up to Fira from the port and walk to the rental car office: most of the rental car offices are within a 5-minute walk from the bus station) or the Santorini airport ( pre-book private transfer from the port to the airport, and then pick up your rental car there). You can also reserve rental cars for pick-up at the ferry port – select “Santorini Port”. Be warned, however, that the road up from the port is very steep, very narrow, peppered with sharp switchbacks, and often clogged with traffic – I have never attempted it, don’t plan to, and don’t recommend it. Santorini port has a small and very loosely organized parking area, located to the left as you exit the ship. The port is usually packed with tourists, buses, and cars when a ferry is arriving or departing so be prepared for chaos. (Once again, I do not recommend picking up a rental car from the ferry port.) Santorini Port to the Airport The shaded waiting area for buses and taxis at the Santorini ferry port. In high-season there is often a ferry port to airport bus. But there is no regularly scheduled bus that does the port-to-airport route . To get from the Santorini port to the airport (when the direct bus is not running) first take the bus from the port up to Fira, and then change buses (buying an additional ticket) to the airport; buses from Fira to the airport depart every hour or so. A bus ticket from the port to Fira costs €2.30 (20 minutes trip), and the bus from Fira to the airport is €1.80 (10 minutes). Cash only. ( Santorini Bus Timetable ) There is often a handful of Taxis waiting at the port after the arrival of a ferry, but sometimes not – and, as there are only 25 taxis that serve the entire island, your chances of securing one are low. Especially if you have a flight to catch, it’s best not to rely on a taxi. Pre-book a ride via Welcome Pickups instead. A pre-booked ride from Welcome Pickups from Athinios Port to the Santorini airport will cost around €50 – similar to a pre-booked taxi. Drivers are English-speaking, monitor the ferry schedule for delays, and wait for you upon your arrival at the port with a welcome sign. Car seats are available on request. Santorini Port to Fira The easiest and cheapest way to get to Fira from Athinios port is by bus. Buses in Santorini are clean, comfortable, and reliable, and there are always buses waiting at the port to meet arriving ferries. Find the local buses parked to your left as you disembark, pay the driver before you board (or sometimes onboard), stow your luggage under the bus, and choose your seat. The fare from Athinios port to Fira is €2.30/person, and the trip takes about 20 minutes. Bus fares are paid in cash only. The Fira bus station is centrally located near the beginning of the cliffside pedestrian-only zone. ( Map ) If you have a lot of luggage, require a child car seat, or your lodging in Fira is not located near the bus station, it’s best to pre-book a ride from Welcome Pickups . These pre-arranged rides are also pre-paid, with fares from the port to Fira ranging from about €35 to €40 – the same as a pre-booked taxi. Taxis are sometimes waiting at the port after the arrival of a ferry, but sometimes not. There are only 25 taxis on the whole island, so your chances of securing one are low. It’s much safer to pre-book a ride via Welcome Pickups than to hope for a taxi. Also, Welcome Pickups rides are paid for in advance (Santorini taxis only take cash), larger minivan-sized rides are available (there is a strict 4-passenger taxi limit in Greece), and you can arrange for a child car seat if needed. Many of the best Fira hotels offer complimentary port transfer, arranged in advance.

Bus to and from the Santorini ferry port.

The road to and from the ferry port descends down the caldera cliff in a series of switchbacks. Skaros Rock and the village of Imerovigli are visible in the middle of the photo.

Santorini Port to Oia There is no direct bus from Athinios Port to Oia . Getting to Oia by bus requires a transfer at the somewhat chaotic bus station in Fira; the Fira-Oia route is the most heavily-used on the island, and it can be difficult to secure a spot for both your luggage (below the bus) and your person (inside the bus) before the bus fills up. Unless you are traveling without luggage, I do not recommend taking the bus from Athinios port to Oia. The fare from Athinios port to Fira is €2.30/person, and the trip takes about 20 minutes; the fare from Fira to Oia is €1.80/person, and the trip takes about half an hour. Bus fares are cash only. ( Santorini Bus Timetable ) The best way to get to Oia from the Santorini Ferry Port is to pre-book a ride from Welcome Pickups . Drivers are English-speaking, monitor the ferry schedule, and wait for you at the port with a welcome sign. Welcome Pickups fares are pre-paid and will cost around €50 from the port to Oia – the same as a pre-booked taxi. Car seats are available on request. Taxis are sometimes waiting at the port after the arrival of a ferry, but sometimes not. And with only 25 taxis on the island in total, chances of securing one after you disembark are low – unless you are super speedy and have sharp elbows. It’s much less of a gamble to pre-book a ride via Welcome Pickups than to hope for a taxi. Other benefits to Welcome Pickups over taxi: pre-paid online (taxis on Santorini only take cash), you can get a larger minivan-sized ride (Greek taxis have a strict 4-passenger limit), and you can arrange for a child car seat if needed. Some of my favorite Oia hotels offer pre-arranged complimentary port transfer or will arrange a pre-booked taxi for their guests. Santorini Port to Imerovigli The cheapest way to get from Athinios port to Imerovigli is by bus. Clean, comfortable, and reliable buses are always waiting at the port after a ferry arrival; find the local buses parked to your left as you disembark, pay the driver before you board (or sometimes onboard the bus), stow your luggage under the bus, and choose your seat. Bus fares are paid in cash only. There is no direct bus from the port to Imerovigli; the trip requires a transfer (and an additional fare) at the Fira bus station. The fare from Athinios port to Fira is €2.30/person (20-minute trip), the fare from Fira to Imerovigli is €1.80/person (also 20 minutes). Buses to Imerovigli depart from the Fira bus station hourly from 8am to 10pm. ( Santorini Bus Timetable ) The Imerovigli bus stop is located near the town entrance, a 5 to 10-minute walk to most cliffside hotels. ( Map ) The easiest way to get to Imerovigli from the Santorini Ferry Port is to pre-book a ride from Welcome Pickups . English-speaking drivers communicate with you about your trip in advance, monitor the ferry schedule for delays or schedule changes, and wait with a welcome sign when you arrive. A pre-paid Welcome Pickups fare from the port to Imerovigli will be around €40, similar to a pre-booked taxi. Car seats are available on request. I don’t recommend relying on a taxi to get from the port to Imerovigli. There are only 25 on the island, and often there will be none waiting at the port after a ferry arrival. Pre-book a ride via Welcome Pickups instead: it’s arranged in advance (no stressing about finding a taxi), paid for in advance (taxis on Santorini only take cash), you can book a larger minivan-sized ride if needed (Greek taxis have a strict 4-passenger limit), and you can arrange for a child car seat if needed. Many of the best hotels in Imerovigli will provide complimentary port transfer or pre-arrange transfer for their guests. Call or email ahead to arrange. Santorini Port to Kamari Taking the bus is the cheapest way to get from the Santorini ferry port to Kamari , and it’s pretty easy to do so. Santorini buses are clean, comfortable, and generally reliable, and there are always buses waiting at the port after a ferry arrival. Local buses will be parked to your left as you get off the ferry; pay the driver before you board (or sometimes on the bus itself), stow your luggage under the bus, and you’re good to go. Note the bus fares are cash only. There is no direct bus from the port to Kamari; the trip requires a transfer (and an additional fare) at the Fira bus station. The fare from Athinios port to Fira is €2.30/person (20-minute trip), and the fare from Fira to Kamari is €1.80/person (25-30 minutes). Buses to Kamari depart from the Fira bus station regularly from 7am to 11:30pm – usually every 20 minutes or so. ( Santorini Bus Timetable ) The Kamari bus stop is located in downtown Kamari, a 5 to 15-minute walk to most Kamari hotels. ( Map ) The easiest way to get from the Santorini Ferry Port to Kamari is to pre-book a ride from Welcome Pickups . English-speaking drivers will monitor the ferry schedule for delays or schedule changes, and will be waiting with a welcome sign at the port when you get off the boat. Rides are prearranged and pre-paid; fare from the port to Kamari is similar to a pre-booked taxi, around €40. Car seats are available on request. Don’t rely on a taxi to get from the port to Imerovigli. There are only 25 on the island, so there’s no guarantee that any will be waiting at the port when you arrive – or that you’d be lucky enough to snag it if there were. Better to pre-book a ride via Welcome Pickups: rides are arranged and paid for in advance (no stressing about finding a taxi or having enough cash onhand to pay), you can book a larger minivan-sized ride (Greek taxis have a strict 4-passenger limit), and you can arrange for a child car seat, if needed. Several of the best Kamari hotels will provide complimentary port transfer or pre-arrange transfer for their guests. Call or email the hotel in advance to arrange. Tickets for Santorini Ferries

Passengers boarding a ferry at the Santorini port of Athinios.

The port can feel chaotic when ferries arrive and depart but it’s all pretty straightforward so no need to stress. In this photo, departing passengers have their tickets checked and then walk onto the ferry. The village of Oia is visible to the left and Fira is up the cliff to the right of the ferry.

• Ferryhopper.com – The best site for booking and buying ferry tickets. How Early to Arrive for Santorini Ferry Departures? The Santorini ferry port is small, but it’s also one of the most heavily-used in Greece – so it can be hectic, especially during the summer high season. Expect some chaos, and arrive at least an hour before your ferry’s scheduled departure . This will give you enough time to pick up your tickets (do this first, as ticket collection points can get crowded just prior to departure) and chill out at the port, knowing that your spot on the boat is secured. In addition to the passenger waiting station, Athinios Port also has a few small minimarts and cafes; it’s easy and pleasant to grab a bite or a drink while you wait. Should I buy my ferry tickets in advance or at the port? Santorini is a Greek island-hopping hot spot, so it’s a good idea to purchase ferry tickets in advance – especially for travel between June and September. During spring, fall, and winter, it’s usually not a problem to show up at the port an hour early and purchase tickets there, but I still like to book in advance if possible, just to be on the safe side. FerryHopper.com has an easy to use search function to research ferry routes, schedules, and prices whether you’re buying in advance from their website or purchasing at the port. Ferryhopper is also great at contacting their customers to inform them of any ferry changes, cancelations, or delays; if you’re buying in advance, I recommend doing so through their website. Most ferry lines offer e-tickets, which can be booked online through Ferryhopper. Any other tickets booked in advance can be collected at the port an hour prior to the ferry’s departure. Where are the ticket kiosks in the Santorini Ferry Port? An ATM and the ticket pick up location at Athinios ferry port. There are two travel agencies where you can purchase ferry tickets at Athinios Port, located within the row of buildings opposite the ferry dock: Nomikos and Dakoutros . If you have booked in advance via Ferryhopper and need to collect tickets, you can do so at Nomikos. Do Greek ferries use e-tickets? Most Greek ferry companies now offer electronic tickets, eliminating the need to collect physical tickets at the port. After booking e-tickets on FerryHopper.com , you will receive a confirmation email with links to web check-in. After checking in online on the day of your departure, you can then download your boarding pass to print on your own or keep in your phone/tablet to present when you board the ferry. Delivery of Santorini Ferry Tickets Some ferry companies allow you to have your tickets delivered in advance to your hotel, but don’t do this. Schedule changes are common, and once you are in physical possession of your tickets, any cancellation or modification can only be processed in person by a representative of your ferry company – for a fee. It’s much easier to book e-tickets or pick up your paper ferry tickets at the port an hour before departure. A tugboat in Athinios ferry port, Santorini. In the distance on the left side of the photo you can see the highest of the island’s cliff towns, Imerovigli, with Skaros Rock jutting out in front of it. Santorini Port Ferry Schedules FerryHopper.com will have the most up-to-date schedules and fares for Greek ferries and is the best way to buy ferry tickets. Although most ferries do not sell out, for peace of mind I recommend booking tickets 2 to 3 months in advance. Santorini to Mykonos Ferries Santorini to Athens Ferries Santorini to Crete Ferries Santorini to Naxos Ferries Santorini to Paros Ferries Santorini to Milos Ferries Staying Near the Santorini Ferry Port There are no hotels close to the Santorini ferry port. Regardless of where you stay on the island, you’ll require a taxi, bus, or pre-booked transfer to get to and from the port, so I generally don’t recommend moving hotels just to be close to the ferry. Fira is the closest town to Athinios Port and the only town with direct buses to and from the port. Every other town will require a change of bus in Fira. The most convenient Fira hotels for the bus to the port are Angel Luxury Suites (luxury), Atlantis Hotel (mid-range), and Petini’s Place (budget). If you’re taking a taxi or booking a ride with Welcome Pickups, there’s little difference in cost and time to get between any Santorini town and the port, so stay in your preferred town and don’t worry too much about convenience.

Santorini Ferry Port Photos A somewhat blurry photo of Athinios Port, as seen from a ferry window upon arrival at Santorini. For the large number of vessels and passengers it serves, the Santorini ferry port is small, its amenities laid out in a neat row opposite the water. Disembarking at Santorini ferry port, you’ll find there’s only one direction you can go: left. Head left. Following the crowd into the port, you’ll find buses, private transfer vehicles, and (maybe) taxis ahead of you to your left, and a row of travel and rental car offices, minimarts, and cafes to your right. A sign points left to the local buses and taxi stand. Local buses are indicated as such by signs displayed in their front windows. Luggage is stowed below the bus, and tickets are purchased (cash only) either on the bus, or from the driver before boarding. There are sometimes a few taxis waiting alongside the local buses, but not always. I don’t recommend relying on taxis from the port; pre-book with Welcome Pickups instead. Near the buses and taxis, there’s generally a crowd of hired drivers holding identifying signs in order to connect with their passengers. If you have booked a ride with Welcome Pickups or arranged for private transfer through your hotel, this is where you’ll meet your driver. In the background of this photo, you can see a row of buses heading up the steep, narrow, and heavily-switchbacked road that leads out of the port. That road is why I do not rent my car at the ferry port, and why I recommend that you don’t either. Across from the buses and taxis, there is a row of businesses: car rental, ferry, and tourism offices, as well as a few minimarts and cafes. If you’ve booked your ferry ride through Ferryhopper and need to collect a paper ticket, this is where you’ll do so (for a small fee): Nomikos travel agency. All ferry companies are represented here. There is a second travel agency, Dakoutros, at the port as well. Tickets can be purchased at either agency, but I recommend booking ahead online. At the end of the row of buildings, there’s a port passenger station, providing a cool indoor spot to sit and wait for your ferry. There’s an ATM in the passenger station… …as well as a small shop that sells snacks, sandwiches, and drinks. There is a restroom in the Santorini Ferry Port passenger station, but there is a small fee to access it: .50 euro. This is the bus station in Fira, the final and only destination for local buses departing from Athinios Port. You can transfer here onto buses to the airport, as well as all other major Santorini towns. A timetable is clearly posted at the Fira bus station. Tickets are cash only, and purchased on board the bus. The schedule for the bus from Fira to Athinios Port is dependent on ferry schedules. It is posted at the Fira bus station, usually one day in advance.

The island of Santorini is hiding an explosive secret

Over three thousand years ago, a volcanic eruption ended an ancient civilization. A new study offers clues about what the next major eruption could look like.

A church overlooks an island over a bright sun.

The Greek island of Santorini is an undeniable aesthetic marvel, with its iconic white-and-blue houses perched high above an azure bay. But this paradisical locale has a spectacularly violent origin story.

Santorini is arc-shaped and has a flooded interior because, in the distant past, colossal eruptions have rapidly excavated a hole out of the center of the island. After each eruption, the Santorini volcano starts to recharge its magma supply, readying itself for another gigantic blast. The most infamous of these outbursts took place in the year 1560 B.C. One of the most powerful eruptions in the past 10,000 years, this explosion and the resulting debris and tsunamis arguably marked the beginning of the end of seafaring Minoan civilization.

A crew stands on deck wearing orange gear.

The island is currently somewhere in the middle of this cataclysmic cycle, and volcanologists are presently most concerned with the island’s Kameni volcano. Effectively a rooftop extension of the considerably larger Santorini volcano, it’s a small mostly underwater edifice at the heart of Santorini with two peaks, Palea and Nea Kameni, poking above the water.

In the year 726, one of Kameni’s eruptions generated significant explosions and threw out myriad molten matter. Based on volcanic rocks recovered from the eruption, this was thought to be the worst-case scenario that Kameni could produce.

Now, a new study, published in Nature Geoscience , reveals that the actual eruption was one to two orders of magnitude more powerful.

They estimate that at least 100 billion cubic feet of lava, ash, and scorching-hot rocks were expelled from Kameni, making it comparable to the formidable 2022 detonation of the submarine Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha‘apai volcano in the Pacific. “Such an eruption happening today would have major implications,” says Jonas Preine , a geophysicist at the University of Hamburg in Germany, and the study’s lead author.

This is unwelcome news, both for the 15,000 people who live on Santorini, and for the two million tourists who visit it every single year. “It raises the possibility that moderate to large explosive eruptions may be more likely than previously thought,” says David Pyle , a volcanologist at the University of Oxford who was not involved with the new work.

But “this is not a reason for the people of the Aegean to be panicking right now,” says Preine. The risk of a major eruption in the near future at Santorini is low, and there are no signs that one is on its way soon. And this study boosts volcanologists’ understanding of the island and its eruptive risks, allowing scientists to better shield people from future dangers.

“Submarine volcanoes are expensive to study,” says Preine. “But it’s worth it. There’s a whole zoo of hazards that could be associated with them.”

Investigating Santorini’s volcanic history

Santorini is one of many caldera-forming volcanoes around the world—those that seem to operate on cycles culminating in massive explosions that form a cauldron-shaped depression (the ‘caldera’). The island’s volcanic activity dates back around 650,000 years, and in that time, it has produced at least five of these catastrophic blasts, including that civilization-crippling one in 1560 B.C.

Since then, the island’s volcanic story has been written by the two-peaked Kameni volcano. Producing both effusive, lava-spewing eruptions and decently explosive ones, it last erupted in 1950, and has been quiet aside from some seismic unrest between 2011 and 2012. But that doesn’t mean it’s sleeping.

“The volcano is still fairly active, so there is, of course, always some risk,” says Isobel Yeo , a submarine volcanologist at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, England who was not involved with the new work. And when it comes to submarine volcanoes, scientists are acutely aware that they “are capable of taking us by surprise.”

The 726 eruption has been a focus for those hoping to understand how hazardous Kameni might be in the future. Historical accounts sound frightening: it was said that the waters of the bay began to boil, before “the entire sea was on fire,” says Preine—after which, deafening explosions blanketed the sky with ash and the land with pumice stones.

But the volcanic evidence found by scientists didn’t seem to quite match up to those apocalyptic descriptions. “Pumice only forms and is distributed in explosive eruptions,” says Rebecca Williams , a volcanologist at the University of Hull who was not involved with the new work. But “a significant challenge to fully understanding the eruptive history of an island volcano is that most of the rock record is lost to the sea.”

The 726 eruption was no exception: only small traces of it were left on land. As a result, even though this was known to be a dangerous event, “the impact of this eruption was never really taken seriously,” says Preine.

What will Santorini’s next eruption look like?

Hoping to decode more of Kameni’s obfuscated volcanic past, members of the International Ocean Discovery Program drilled into the marine basins of the caldera at various sites, extracting sediment cores each time.

In doing so, they found a considerable volume of ash and pumice that they traced back to the 726 eruption. It quickly became clear that this eruption really was as significant and severe as the historic accounts had portrayed it, one that likely involved thunderous underwater booms giving way to towering columns of ash and pumice.

An explosive eruption throwing out 100 billion cubic feet of erupted matter is certainly a frightening thought. But the reality was likely more nightmarish.

“The estimate they provide is at the lower end, because they are using only the volume of material deposited within the caldera,” says Yeo. “Lots of material was likely transported and deposited away from the volcano during the eruption.”

This study raises the possibility that Kameni is capable of greater harm than anyone suspected. A similarly explosive eruption today “raises the possibility not only of substantial ash and pumice fall, but also tsunamis generated by possible ’sector’ collapse of the island, which is built on unstable pumice deposits,” says Kathy Cashman , a volcanologist at the University of Oregon not involved with the work.

The team’s discovery also means that Kameni’s worst-case scenario is, well, worse than previously thought. Fortunately, scientists have long taken the island’s volcanic risks into consideration.

“Santorini should be taken seriously given the volcano’s tsunamigenic potential and the large number of people that could be affected,” says Amy Donovan , a volcanologist at the University of Cambridge who wasn’t involved with the work. “While this paper does say that 726 was bigger than we thought, it doesn’t significantly increase my concern about what was already a concerning volcano for multiple reasons.”

Unsurprisingly, the volcano is also vigilantly monitored around the clock. “Any signs of unrest are likely to be detected in their earliest phases and warnings issued,” says Yeo.

The implications of this research won’t remain local to the island. Santorini is widely considered to be one of the key sites whose study led to the modern science of volcanology. It’s been extensively examined, its every accessible detail forensically analyzed countless times. “And still, it gives us large surprises,” says Preine. “This volcano that you’re looking at every day has some secrets that we’re still discovering.”

What, then, does that say about other caldera-forming volcanoes around the world, especially those submerged beneath the ocean? “If we’ve been unaware of this at Santorini, we’re surely unaware of similar eruptions at other volcanoes,” says Preine. “This is a huge blind spot for the volcanology community.”

The clock is ticking. “Almost no submerged volcanoes are monitored,” says Yeo, “and this needs to change.”
