How to Travel Like a Rock Star, According to a Rock Star

  • Copy Link copied

Touring musicians are the ultimate road warriors. They’re away for months at a time, with multi-city itineraries, long sets, late nights, and lodging options that are memorable—and not always in a good way. We caught up with Wylie Gelber, the bassist of Dawes , to talk travel as the L.A.-based group tours on the heels of their latest album, All Your Favorite Bands .

How long have you been on the road? We’ve been out for two months and have another two to go before we get an actual break. We do get to go home for a night on August 24, but then the next day we go to Europe. After that it’s off to Australia and New Zealand. Every time we put out a new record, we always forget how hard we have to tour.

Describe your travel philosophy. Chill and calm. I see so many people in airports losing their minds over things that are out of their control—plane delays, lost luggage. All it does is make you feel crazy. The best thing to do is to just think, whatever, I might miss my flight or my bags might get lost, but it’s just part of travel.

What’s the secret to not killing your travel companions on these longer stints? I love my band members, so when we first started touring, we used to book our airline seats next to each other so we could all hang out. It was a little intense. These days we find our own corners and splatter ourselves against the windows of the plane and try to sleep. When you do all these crazy long flights, it doesn’t matter if you’re sitting next to your best friend. You just want to put your headphones on and listen to a record and close your eyes and try to forget that you have 14 hours left to go.

What’s the coolest venue you’ve played so far? First Avenue in Minneapolis is one of our all-time favorite venues. It’s got a great vibe and the crowd is always fun. In D.C., we like the 9:30 Club because it’s so dialed in. They’ve been on tour before so they’ve thought of everything we need. Things work, the sound is great, and they treat you nicely.

What’s the first thing you seek out in a new place? I like to build things—gear, furniture, whatever—and I have a large collection of tools. So every time I wake up in a different town, I try to go to a hardware store. They’re usually run by old curmudgeons used to seeing the same eight customers, and they think I’m this weirdo because I’m a young guy who cruises in with his headphones on. I’ve gotten some crazy vintage tools that way over the years.

Any standout meals on the road? Anytime we’re in Chicago, we go to Avec , a Mediterranean place in the West Loop. We’re also really big on barbecue, so if we’re in a barbecue zone, we go nuts. Usually we’ll send one guy out to buy it for entire crew. We were just in Kansas City and had insanely good barbeque from Joe’s Kansas City .

What do you look for in a hotel? For years we stayed in these disgusting hotels that were your literal nightmare. We’d sleep fully clothed with a hoodie on and with all the lights on. Things have definitely improved, but still, a great hotel to us doesn’t have to be fancy; it’s simply a really clean place that looks more inviting than your bunk on the bus.

Let’s play spin the globe—name the one place you’ve always wanted to go. I just found out that we have a show in New Zealand , and I’m stoked to go there. From what I hear, it sounds like one of the most beautiful and pure places on earth.

What city would you visit just to explore the music scene? New Orleans . When I’m there, I feel like I’m just a small part of an enormous music scene that’s happening all around me. The city revolves around musicians. You’ll hear someone playing in the street, and they’ve never made a recording in their lives, but it doesn’t make them any less significant.

What’s on your travel playlist right now? Lately I’ve been listening to Crusaders, this old school jazz band that phased over into soul jazz. And I’m always listening to Bill Withers and Curtis Mayfield.

Where’s the first place you’ll go when you’re finally back home in L.A.? The rest of the guys in the band live on the opposite side of town from me, and they like to hang out at the Hermosillo , a bar in Highland Park. But the one I like is closer to me in Culver City, and it’s called the Cozy Inn . It’s a great spot with neon Budweiser signs and a really good shuffleboard table. It’s everything I need to feel right at home again.

C.J. Snare, the frontman of the hard rock band FireHouse, has died at the age of 64.

“Today is a sad day for Rock N Roll,” read a statement posted on the band’s official Facebook page on Sunday, April 7.

“It is with great sorrow we are letting the world know we have lost our brother: CJ Snare, the rock and roll warrior, lead vocalist, and a founding member of Firehouse.”

The statement added that Snare “passed unexpectedly at home” and “was a young 64 years old.”

“As you are all aware, CJ was expected to be back on stage with the band this summer after recovering from surgery,” the statement continued. “We are all in complete shock with CJ's untimely passing.”

The band added that the frontman — born Carl Snare — “was arguably one of the best vocal talents of a generation, touring the world with Firehouse non stop the past 34 years.”

“Our heartfelt condolences go out to the entire Snare family, Katherine Little, friends, and all our beloved fans all over the world,” the statement added before concluding with an emotional message to Snare.

“‘Reach for the Sky’ CJ!,” they said, referencing their 1992 song “Reach for the Sky.”

“You will be forever missed by family, friends, fans and your band mates. You’re singing with the angels now,” they added.

According to TMZ , Snare’s daughter Heather told the outlet that her father suffered cardiac arrest after a long journey with cancer. According to TMZ, Snare is survived by three children.

Firehouse was formed in 1984 in Richmond, Virginia before signing to Epic Records in 1989. Together, they produced hits such as 1990’s "Love of a Lifetime", 1992’s "When I Look Into Your Eyes," and 1995’s "I Live My Life For You.”

In an Instagram post on March 27, Snare alluded to his health, writing "Feeling Stronger Everyday ! I’ll be back on stage with FireHouse before you know it. Health is first so making a FULL recovery ❤️‍🩹 before my return. 🤘🏼❤️🤘🏼"

Gwen Stefani, Billy Idol, Travis Barker Back Workday’s ‘Rock Star’ Ad Return

Gwen Stefani performs onstage at Bud Light Super Bowl LVI Music Fest held at Crypto.com Arena on February 11, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.

Workday is getting ready to go back on tour.

The human-resources and finance software company is ready to launch another leg of the ad campaign it launched in 2023’s Super Bowl LVII, in which popular musicians set the record straight on whether high-performing corporate types ought to be called “rock stars.” In this go-round, two new ads will be seen during The Masters between April 8 and April 14 and in five key overseas markets: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Travis Barker , Gwen Stefani and Billy Idol appear on behalf of Workday in the next campaign, taking a spin through an office and demanding that they, and not corporate overachievers, should be known as rock stars.

“The music industry produces the only real rock stars — whether it’s rock, rap, or pop — those are the true rock stars of today,” says Barker. “It’s crazy that people who work in tech and other office settings think they can be rock stars too.” Barker offers up a stunning percussion session in one scene, while Idol, who also made appearances during the company’s Super Bowl efforts, snarls his way though another cameo.

Workday provides workforce management tools built with artificial intelligence to help corporations manage staffing and money. But it’s gaining experience with advertising entities with experience talking to average consumers. Its ad agency is Ogilvy, the blue-chip ad firm owned by WPP that is known for the historic work it has done for clients like IBM and American Express. And director Jim Jenkins, who directed the previous Workday campaign and directed a 2020 Super Bowl spot for Jeep that featured Bill Murray reprising his role from the 1993 movie “Groundhog Day,” has returned.

Workday remains open to the possibility of returning to the Super Bowl in the future, Chalwin says, but felt April represented better timing this year.

Time Travel IELTS Reading Passage with Answers

READING PASSAGE 3

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 28-40 which are based on Reading Passage 3 below.

Time Travel

Time travel took a small step away from science fiction and toward science recently when physicists discovered that sub-atomic particles known as neutrinos – progeny of the sun’s radioactive debris – can exceed the speed of light. The unassuming particle – it is electrically neutral, small but with a “non-zero mass” and able to penetrate the human form undetected – is on its way to becoming a rock star of the scientific world.

Researchers from the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva sent the neutrinos hurtling through an underground corridor toward their colleagues at the Oscillation Project with Emulsion-Tracing Apparatus (OPERA) team 730 kilometres away in Gran Sasso, Italy. The neutrinos arrived promptly – so promptly, in fact, that they triggered what scientists are calling the unthinkable – that everything they have learnt, known or taught stemming from the last one hundred years of the physics discipline may need to be reconsidered.

The issue at stake is a tiny segment of time – precisely sixty nanoseconds (which is sixty billionths of a second). This is how much faster than the speed of light the neutrinos managed to go in their underground travels and at a consistent rate (15,000 neutrinos were sent over three years). Even allowing for a margin of error of ten billionths of a second, this stands as proof that it is possible to race against light and win. The duration of the experiment also accounted for and ruled out any possible lunar effects or tidal bulges in the earth’s crust.

Nevertheless, there’s plenty of reason to remain sceptical. According to Harvard University science historian Peter Galison, Einstein’s relativity theory has been “pushed harder than any theory in the history of the physical sciences”. Yet each prior challenge has come to no avail, and relativity has so far refused to buckle.

So is time travel just around the corner? The prospect has certainly been wrenched much closer to the realm of possibility now that a major physical hurdle – the speed of light – has been cleared. If particles can travel faster than light, in theory travelling back in time is possible. How anyone harnesses that to some kind of helpful end is far beyond the scope of any modern technologies, however, and will be left to future generations to explore.

Certainly, any prospective time travellers may have to overcome more physical and logical hurdles than merely overtaking the speed of light. One such problem, posited by René Barjavel in his 1943 text Le Voyageur Imprudent is the so-called grandfather paradox. Barjavel theorised that, if it were possible to go back in time, a time traveller could potentially kill his own grandfather. If this were to happen, however, the time traveller himself would not be born, which is already known to be true. In other words, there is a paradox in circumventing an already known future; time travel is able to facilitate past actions that mean time travel itself cannot occur.

Other possible routes have been offered, though. For Igor Novikov, astrophysicist behind the 1980s’ theorem known as the self-consistency principle, time travel is possible within certain boundaries. Novikov argued that any event causing a paradox would have zero probability. It would be possible, however, to “affect” rather than “change” historical outcomes if travellers avoided all inconsistencies. Averting the sinking of the Titanic, for example, would revoke any future imperative to stop it from sinking – it would be impossible. Saving selected passengers from the water and replacing them with realistic corpses would not be impossible, however, as the historical record would not be altered in any way.

A further possibility is that of parallel universes. Popularised by Bryce Seligman DeWitt in the 1960s (from the seminal formulation of Hugh Everett), the many-worlds interpretation holds that an alternative pathway for every conceivable occurrence actually exists. If we were to send someone back in time, we might therefore expect never to see him again – any alterations would divert that person down a new historical trajectory.

Time Travel IELTS Reading Passage with Answers

A final hypothesis, one of unidentified provenance, reroutes itself quite efficiently around the grandfather paradox. Non-existence theory suggests exactly that – a person would quite simply never exist if they altered their ancestry in ways that obstructed their own birth. They would still exist in person upon returning to the present, but any chain reactions associated with their actions would not be registered. Their “historical identity” would be gone.

So, will humans one day step across the same boundary that the neutrinos have? World-renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking believes that once spaceships can exceed the speed of light, humans could feasibly travel millions of years into the future in order to repopulate earth in the event of a forthcoming apocalypse. This is because, as the spaceships accelerate into the future, time would slow down around them (Hawking concedes that bygone eras are off limits – this would violate the fundamental rule that cause comes before effect).

Hawking is therefore reserved yet optimistic. “Time travel was once considered scientific heresy, and I used to avoid talking about it for fear of being labelled a crank. These days I’m not so cautious.”

Questions 28-33 Do the following statements agree with the information given in Reading Passage 3? In boxes 28–33 on your answer sheet, write

TRUE if the statement agrees with the information FALSE if the statement contradicts the information NOT GIVEN if there is no information on this

28 It is unclear where neutrinos come from. 29 Neutrinos can pass through a person’s body without causing harm. 30 It took scientists between 50-70 nanoseconds to send the neutrinos from Geneva to Italy. 31 Researchers accounted for effects the moon might have had on the experiment. 32 The theory of relativity has often been called into question unsuccessfully. 33 This experiment could soon lead to some practical uses for time travel.

Questions 34–39 Complete the table below. Choose NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS from the passage for each answer. Write your answers in boxes 34–39 on your answer sheet.

Question 40 Choose the correct letter, A, B, C or D. Write the correct letter in box 40 on your answer sheet.

Stephen Hawking has stated that

A Human time travel is theoretically possible, but is unlikely to ever actually occur. B Human time travel might be possible, but only moving backward in time. C Human time travel might be possible, but only moving forward in time. D All time travel is impossible.

Billy Idol in Workday's 2023 Masters Tournament "Rock Star" ad

“Oooh, data driven insights and large language models, that’s so rock ’n‘ roll,” roars rock legend Billy Idol in his latest Workday ads co-starring Coachella headliner Gwen Stefani and punk icon Travis Barker.

Airing this week during The Masters golf tournament amid eclipse mania , the spots build on a campaign launched at Super Bowl LVII where Idol, Ozzy Osbourne, Joan Jett, Gary Clark Jr. and Kiss’ Paul Stanley protest the use of the word “rock star” to describe high performers at the office.

On stage at SXSW , Workday’s chief learning officer Chris Ernst and Johnson & Johnson’s global talent chief Michael Ehret explained to me how AI is being used to create “rock stars” in their organizations by helping workers chart their dream careers. With access to a vast skills database, employees can now identify paths they are passionate about as AI personalizes their learning journey with training materials, mentors who can answer questions, and company gigs that can advance careers. And with people living longer, these AI-powered platforms are also being used to re-skill retirees to bring them back into the workforce.

Enter Billy Idol, the iconoclastic rock star who exploded onto the MTV scene in the ’80s, graced the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in leather underwear and lived larger than life as a double platinum artist. He talked with me about what it means to be a rock star and whether AI could ever truly make one.

“Being a rock star says all the things it always did —do what you want, kick down any door in your way and own whatever stage you’re at,” said Idol.

Still hot on the festival circuit at 68, Idol is keeping things fresh by collaborating with chart-topping artists, like Miley Cyrus . He’s a fan of Post Malone and The Weeknd, and enjoys exploring underground music on YouTube.

He’s also interested in returning to acting. In the ’90s , he had cameos in Adam Sandler’s The Wedding Singer and Oliver Stone’s The Doors, and was nearly cast by James Cameron as the villainous T1000 in Terminator 2 .

Looking back at his storied career, he said he never thought it was going to get as big as it did. Ambition and attitude drove much of his success, but there was also timing. To fit in with the hedonism of the era, he gave himself a name that lionized his persona, similar to Prince and Madonna, then went about making punk sexy. It quickly caught fire and gave him a life he wasn’t expecting.

“It’s funny to think rock ’n‘ roll can keep you healthy doing what you love,” he told me. “It doesn’t get old. It’s a high you can get every night.”

Always tech forward, he sees the potential for AI as a tool that can to do astonishing things, like uncover songs buried deep in old demo tapes and remix them to create something new. But whether the technology can ever understand the nuance of what makes humans rock, that remains to be seen.

“I wonder if the machines can really replicate me, because, you know, I created me as a singer. I was never a naturally gifted singer, so it's not really obvious what I'm doing,” said Idol. “I mean, they could try, I see some of the things they’re doing. It all still sounds a bit faux.”

Why ‘The Rock’ isn’t endorsing Joe Biden in 2024

rock star of travel

WASHINGTON – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson endorsed President Joe Biden during the 2020 election, but the pro-wrestler turned movie star isn’t planning to weigh in on the 2024 race.

“Am I going to do that again, this year? That answer's no,” Johnson said about his plans to publicly back Biden during an interview with Fox & Friends . “Not that I'm afraid of it at all, but it's just I realize that with this level of influence, I keep my politics to myself.”

Johnson said that believed endorsing Biden in the 2020 election was the best decision at the time. But shortly after, he realized sharing his political opinions only further flamed partisan division in the country.

"I wouldn't do that because my goal is to bring our country together,” he said. "So in the spirit of that, there's going to be no endorsement."

Johnson added that he believes the American people will make the right decision in the 2024 election.

“I trust that whoever they vote for, that's going to be my president. That's who I’m going to support," he said.

As for rumors that he's planning a presidential run, Johnson didn't rule it out completely.

“As of now, no,” he said when directly asked about the possibility.  “That's not my intention. I'm not a politician. I'm not in politics.”

Last-minute trip from Florida for the total eclipse? Here's the closest large city in the path

The first total solar eclipse of 2024 is Monday, April 8 and it will be the only solar eclipse this year that will have a path of totality stretching across the U.S. And it’s been nicknamed “The Great North American Eclipse.”

Florida isn’t in the path of totality, but depending on where you are in the state, you might be able to see a little over half of the sun being covered by the moon. Although, if you’re up for an impromptu road trip this weekend, the closest big city in the path of totality is a 14-hour drive from Orlando.

Here’s how visible the April 8 total solar eclipse will be from Florida and where the closest big city in the path of totality is.

Can you see the solar eclipse in Florida 2024?

Florida isn’t in the direct path of the total eclipse.

The path of totality of the Great North American Eclipse will start between New Zealand and Mexico in the South Pacific Ocean, pass from Mexico into Oklahoma, and travel northeast (diagonally) across the country. The path of totality will cross the New England region of the U.S. and then a portion of Canada, before ending in the Atlantic Ocean near the French and Spanish coasts.

While we're not in the path of totality, we'll still be able to see a partial eclipse from Florida. From just over half of the sun to over 3/4 of it will be obscured by the moon from our angle, depending on where you are in the state.

What major cities are in the path of totality 2024?

A recent study from online fishing and hunting guidebook Captain Experiences mapped the biggest cities with the best view of the total solar eclipse in the path of totality.

“Due to the unique path of the 2024 eclipse, Texas stands out as the state hosting the top four largest cities within the totality path and eight of the top 15,” the study said.

“Notably, among the five largest cities in Texas — Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin — only Houston will not experience the total solar eclipse this year.”

Here’s Captain Experiences’ list of the largest cities in the path of totality:

  • San Antonio, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Austin, Texas
  • Fort Worth, Texas
  • Columbus, Ohio
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Arlington, Texas
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Plano, Texas
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Toledo, Ohio
  • Irving, Texas
  • Garland, Texas
  • Rochester, New York
  • Little Rock, Arkansas

Which city in the eclipse path of totality is closest to Florida?

If you want to drive to see the eclipse in its path of totality, it’s a long drive, but it’s possible. And you'd need to make the trip this weekend or pull an all-nighter on Sunday to make it.

Of the biggest cities in the 2024 total solar eclipse path of totality, Little Rock, Arkansas is closest to Florida.

Depending on where you are in Florida, the drive to Little Rock takes around 10 hours (from Tallahassee), to 17 hours (from Miami).

Will Little Rock, Arkansas be in the path of totality 2024?

Yes! Little Rock, Arkansas is in the path of totality for the total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8. The window of totality in Little Rock is anticipated to be 2 minutes and 29 seconds of complete darkness.

According to Time and Date , the eclipse will begin around 12:33 p.m. in Little Rock, reach maximum darkness at around 1:52 p.m. and it will end around 3:11 p.m.
