Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (June 7, 2021) — MSC Cruises – the world’s third largest and fastest-growing cruise brand — is announcing today its restart plans for cruising from U.S. ports beginning this August on two of its most glamorous and modern ships. The announcement follows CDC approval of the Company’s Phase 2A Port Agreements for PortMiami and Port Canaveral as well as the provisional approval of its request to conduct a simulation cruise, to be held on MSC Meraviglia from PortMiami on July 17, 2021.

“After what has been a challenging period, we’re thrilled to say it’s finally time to cruise again. We are excited to be officially announcing our restart this summer from the U.S., and Florida in particular, as excitement is building for vacationers to get back to traveling and plan a much-deserved getaway,” said Gianni Onorato, CEO of MSC Cruises. “We want to thank our guests and partners, as well as Governor Ron DeSantis and the State of Florida, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Miami Dade County, PortMiami and Port Canaveral port officials. and the CDC for their strong support in bringing cruising back to the U.S. so we can get back to doing what we do best, providing our guests incredible and enriching vacations at sea.”

U.S. Restart Plans

MSC Cruises’ new itineraries from the U.S. on board MSC Meraviglia and MSC Divina will officially open for booking on Wednesday, June 16, 2021. MSC Meraviglia will kick off MSC Cruises’ restart starting August 2, 2021, with 3- and 4-night cruises from Miami to The Bahamas and featuring MSC Cruises’ exclusive new private island destination, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. Then, starting September 18, 2021, MSC Meraviglia will add 7-night cruises from Miami to The Bahamas and Caribbean, including Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve. MSC Divina will resume cruising from Orlando (Port Canaveral) on September 16, 2021, offering 3-, 4- and 7-night cruise options from to The Bahamas and Caribbean, also including stops at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

“With our vast experience cruising in Europe since August 2020 along with our industry-leading health and safety protocol, our guests can book with confidence knowing we are well prepared for a successful restart in the U.S.,” said Rubén Rodriguez, president of MSC Cruises USA. “To ensure the safest experience for our guests, we previously announced a fleet-wide vaccination program for all crew — thanks to the support of The State of Florida, local government and port officials, and our partners,— and we expect that the majority of our guests booking a cruise this summer will plan to be vaccinated prior to sail. The rapid distribution of vaccines in the U.S. has been a positive step toward helping vacationers get back to traveling, and we encourage our guests to take advantage of this added layer of protection when resuming travel this summer.”

MSC Cruises will reveal additional itinerary details for cruises on board MSC Meraviglia and MSC Divina in the coming week, as well as health and safety measures and guidelines for guests. Cruises will welcome both vaccinated and non-vaccinated guests.   Those who are not vaccinated or unable to verify vaccination will be subject to requirements such as additional testing, as well as restrictions, which will be announced at a later date. Details of our current health and safety protocol can be found on MSC Cruises’ website at www.msccruisesusa.com/health-and-safety .

MSC Cruises is also confirming today the cancellation of existing U.S.-based sailings. The decision will affect the schedules of three ships based in Florida: MSC Divina scheduled to sail from Port Canaveral, and MSC Meraviglia and MSC Armonia scheduled to sail from PortMiami, as follows:

  • Cruises onboard MSC Divina from July 1, 2021 through to and including September 15, 2021
  • Cruises onboard MSC Meraviglia from July 1, 2021 through to and including September 17, 2021
  • Cruises onboard MSC Armonia from July 1, 2021 through to and including October 24, 2021

Guests booked on the impacted sailings have the unique opportunity to easily rebook on one of MSC Cruises’ first sailings from the U.S. on MSC Meraviglia and MSC Divina , open for sale on June 16, 2021, or on the brand new MSC Seashore, arriving to Miami this November. Guests impacted by these cancellations — and who have paid in full and booked through MSC Cruises USA or affiliated U.S.-based travel advisors — will be offered a 100 percent future cruise credit (FCC) of the original cruise fare and up to $200 onboard credit, depending on the length of the original cruise. The FCC and onboard credit can be used on any future cruise of choice — on any ship, and any itinerary that is open for sale – or guests can request a refund if they prefer.  For additional details, guests should contact their travel advisor or MSC Cruises directly.

Leonardo and Fincantieri to Provide Baggage Handling For New MSC Terminal

  • April 4, 2024

MSC Miami Terminal

In collaboration with Fincantieri Infrastructure, Leonardo was chosen to provide an advanced baggage management and sorting system for the new MSC cruise terminal in Miami, according to a press release.

This will mark the first time that the Leonardo technology is applied in the cruise sector,  following the success achieved in the airport sector and the recent introduction of the baggage handling system in the United States at Denver Airport, the companies said in a statement.

The new system will be able to simultaneously manage the baggage of three cruise ships and up to 36,000 travelers per day. The solution includes a screening area with 14 lines and a sorting system based on Leonardo’s Multi-sorting Baggage Handling System (MBHS), integrated with IT solutions and software for managing baggage flows.

Gianluca Suprani, senior vice president of port development and shoreside activities of MSC Cruises, said: “We are delighted to work with Leonardo and Fincantieri Infrastructure to introduce this cutting-edge technology and to be the first cruise company to adopt, together with PortMiami, the first airport-level automatic baggage handling system. We work to ensure our guests have the best possible experience, as well as being fully integrated into baggage management, capable of ensuring high levels of satisfaction.

Massimiliano Veltroni, managing director of Leonardo’s Automation Business Unit, said: “The partnership with MSC aims to create a model for future initiatives and to redefine the standards in baggage management in the cruise sector, to become a point of reference in terms of efficiency, reliability and passenger satisfaction. The project also lays the foundations for the development of baggage handling facilities at future MSC cruise terminals”.

Salvatore Esposito, CEO of Fincantieri Infrastructure, added: “Fincantieri Infrastructure is proud to collaborate with MSC in the construction of the new MSC Cruises Terminal, a large-scale strategic work, an iconic project in the port of Miami, and to collaborate with Leonardo for the dissemination and promotion of the best Italian technology. This is an example that shows how cooperation between large Italian companies allows “made in Italy” to be exported to the world”, commented

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — A cruise ship reportedly carrying 1,500 passengers was stuck Wednesday in the Spanish northeastern port of Barcelona due to the visa problems of a group of Bolivian passengers who were due to disembark there, officials said.

Authorities say 69 Bolivians were not being allowed to leave the ship because they lacked valid documents to enter the European border-free Schengen area. Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press she received reports some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said, adding she heard it was possible the Bolivians would be transferred to a different ship.

Spain’s national police was looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

Spanish state news agency Efe and other media said some 1,500 passengers were on board the MSC Armony hoping to continue the cruise to Croatia.

Bolivia’s deputy foreign affairs minister, Fernando Pérez, said the country was waiting “to see what the Spanish authorities decide what to do.”

A statement from the Bolivian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said the Bolivian Embassy in Spain and the country’s Consulate General in Barcelona “are carrying out the pertinent steps to address this case,” coordinating with Spanish authorities, as well as with the MSC Cruises Company.

MSC Cruises said in a statement the Bolivians included families and children.

It said the “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil. We have been informed by the authorities that the visas are not valid for entry into the Schengen area. As a result, passengers have not been able to disembark in Barcelona, which was their final destination.”

The company said the ship remained in port while it works with authorities to facilitate the process.

The Schengen area is an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries, most from the European Union.

This story was corrected to show that the Schengen zone is a European rather than European Union creation and comprises 29 countries.

Cruise ship stuck in Spain will resume sailing after Bolivian passengers with visa problems removed

Spanish authorities say a cruise ship stuck in the northeastern port of Barcelona will be able to resume its route after a group of Bolivian passengers with visa problems were taken off the vessel

MADRID -- A cruise ship stuck in the northeastern Spanish port of Barcelona will be able to resume its route after a group of Bolivian passengers with visa problems were taken off the vessel on Thursday, authorities said.

The Spanish government said in a statement it had reached an agreement with MSC Cruises Company in which 69 Bolivian passengers were removed from the boat and taken to a transit zone in the port, but were not granted permission to enter Spanish territory.

The ship got stranded in Barcelona this week after the Bolivian passengers were not allowed to disembark because they lacked valid documents to enter the European border-free Schengen area, an ID-check-free travel zone comprising 29 European countries that Spain is part of.

Barcelona was meant to be the final destination for the Bolivian passengers, but the boat was scheduled to travel onward to other countries.

The cruise company agreed to provide another boat from Livorno, Italy , for the Bolivian passengers later Thursday, the government statement said. It was not clear if that boat would remain in Barcelona until the situation is resolved or take the Bolivian passengers elsewhere.

Under the agreement, MSC Cruises will also provide food and health care for the impacted Bolivians and immigration officials will work to resolve the passengers' visa problems as quickly as possible, it added.

The MSC Armonia, with more than 1,000 passengers reportedly on board, plans to sail to Italy on Thursday, the cruise company said.

Solange Duarte, a Bolivian diplomat in Barcelona, told The Associated Press on Wednesday she had received reports that some of the stranded Bolivians had been duped into obtaining fake visas but had no further information.

“We have asked the families to indicate who has processed this visa and we have not gotten answers,” she said.

Spain’s national police were looking into the possibility of a fake visa scam, Duarte said.

MSC Cruises said in a statement Wednesday the Bolivian “passengers appeared to have proper documentation upon boarding in Brazil" but Spanish authorities later said the visas were not valid for entry into the Schengen area.

Cruise passenger, 23, fell overboard and vanished after complaining he felt seasick

  • A tourist, 23, fell overboard from the MSC Euribia cruise ship, say reports.
  • The recently-wed student had just texted his wife that he felt seasick.
  • Liam Jones vanished during a seven-day Northern Europe tour cruise

Insider Today

A 23-year-old tourist is presumed dead after falling from the MSC Euribia cruise ship in the North Sea, reports say.

Liam Jones disappeared during a seven-day Northern Europe tour cruise from Southampton to Amsterdam with his family to celebrate his mother's birthday.

The social work student from Scotland was last seen on board by his sister on March 16, shortly after texting his wife, Sophia Mcphee, about feeling seasick, reports said.

Business Insider contacted MSC Cruises for comment outside office hours.

MSC confirmed a passenger went missing during the cruise, prompting an investigation by Hampshire Constabulary upon the ship's return to the UK, per The Telegraph.

His wife told the Daily Record," He's just gone. I'm never going to see him again."

"I'm devastated. I have so many questions, and I'm not getting any answers to what's happened," said Mcphee, 20.

McPhee says Jones' sister told her the news. "She said there had been an accident and Liam 'wasn't coming back.' She then said she had seen CCTV and he'd gone overboard."

A spokesperson for MSC Cruises said, "We are deeply saddened by this news, and our thoughts are with the family at this very difficult time," per The Telegraph.

The chances of you falling overboard off a cruise ship are extremely low .

In 2023, at least 10 people fell off a major cruise line ship, turning dream vacations into disaster situations — and only two survived the fall into the ocean.

The MSC Euribia can accommodate 6,327 passengers and has a wide range of bars and restaurants, five swimming pools, a wellness spa, a theater, a casino, and a very extensive children's club.

The price of the seven-night Nothern Europe tour on the MSC Euribia start at $950 per person, according to MSC's website .
