More about new york city.

New York City is traditionally broken up into five-boroughs: Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. To the west, there's the island of Manhattan where you'll find most of the iconic attractions like Central Park, The Empire State Building and Times Square. It might be a good idea to give yourself plenty of time to explore this borough. To the north of Manhattan is the Bronx, known for Yankee Stadium and famous Bronx Zoo. Over on the eastside is Queens where you can explore a variety of museums off the beaten path like MoMA PS1, Queens Museum and New York Hall of Science. Over in Brooklyn, look out for the famous Brooklyn Bridge and Coney Island, both have been featured in countless movies and TV shows. Down south is Staten Island connected to Manhattan via the Staten Island Ferry, which gives you a scenic ride of New York Harbor.

Before You Go

  • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
  • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
  • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
  • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
  • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.
  • For complete and current safety and security information, including travelers' tips, public announcements, travel advisories and more, please visit the website of the U.S. Department of State at www.travel.state.gov.

Top Experiences

Central Park : You could easily spend all day at this park. It's home to numerous movie filming locations like Wollman Rink, known for most ice-skating scenes in New York City and Bethesda Terrace, that gorgeous arched terrace with the fountain outside of it with the angel on top, popular with romcoms. Just walk around the park and you'll get a sense of deja vu. The park is also home to the Central Park Zoo and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Statue of Liberty : A gift from the French, she's become a symbol of America. You can only reach her by ferry so make sure to book your ticket in advance to get an up-close and personal look and learn more about this piece of American history.

Empire State Building : Songs have been inspired by this building, the New York skyline wouldn't be quite as stylish without it. While not the tallest building in the city, this 102-story art deco inspired building still offers an amazing view of the city.

Times Square : If you're brave enough come for the epic New Year's Eve ball drop, otherwise come to marvel at the brightly lit square in all its glory on any other day of the year. It's located at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Ave and is surrounded by popular attractions, restaurants and shops.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to New York

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest New York flight deals.
  • For business travelers headed to Manhattan, the closest airport is LaGuardia Airport (LGA); however, it focuses on domestic flights. John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) is the international airport nearest to Manhattan.
  • After a long-haul international flight to New York, you’re welcome to relax and unwind at the airport lounges at JFK and EWR. These airports offer international flights and consequently have several members-only and pay-to-access lounges (Air France, American Airlines, Delta Sky Club, United Club, Alaska Lounge, and Centurion Lounge) at their terminals.
  • Newark Airport is the best option if you wish to travel to the neighboring cities via train . The airport is served by the New Jersey Transit Authority with rail connections to New York and Newark Penn Stations for Amtrak connections.
  • Although quite far from downtown New York, Newark Airport has some of the shortest wait times. It is less busy than JFK, clearing security is much quicker, and the AirTrain provides easy access to downtown New York, making it a great alternative to JFK for international flights.
  • For flights to New York, there are two main options directly in NYC; namely, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and JFK International Airport (JFK) . LaGuardia acts primarily as a domestic outlet for travelers going to and from NYC. JFK, on the other hand, is more internationally focused and offers direct flights to destinations all around the world.
  • In addition to the main two airports, the neighboring Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is also a great option for flights to New York. While Newark is technically in New Jersey, it also serves as a large air traffic hub for NYC. It is only 12 miles from New York City and is easily reached via AirTrain Newark, which stops at a number of subway stations in downtown NYC.
  • The AirTrain offers an easy and cheap way to get to, from, and around JFK International Airport. You can easily reach JFK by connecting to the AirTrain via the E, A, J, and Z subway lines in downtown NYC. Additionally, it provides quick transportation between any of the airport terminals for free.
  • All three New York airports are fully accessible to disabled passengers. They are equipped with ramps, lifts, and wheelchair-accessible restrooms. Any passenger needing special assistance should contact their airline before traveling.
  • Bogged down with work before your flight? Don’t worry, LaGuardia has you covered with its Jabbrrbox automated workspaces . Featuring IoT technology, sound-sealed cubicles and secure WiFi, Jabbrrbox Work Booths offer an ideal working environment for travelers on the go.
  • The ARK at JFK is perfect for travelers with pets. The ARK is an animal care facility that aims to bring first class flying service to all of our four-legged friends. They offer services such as animal care throughout the pre- and post-flight experience as well as equine import/export.

Top 5 airlines flying to new york.

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

Horrible. First delta flight was delayed. I ran to my connecting flight and arrived to the gate 13 mins before departure. I told the gate agent “I’m here”, she told me flight was closed while giving my already confirmed seat to an stand by passenger. I said again “madam, I’m here with my confirmed seat” and she said “no you’re not here@ and gave two stand by people a boarding pass and let them board. I asked “madam, why do you do that?”, and she repeated “you’re not here”. That was very rude. I’m disappointed of delta. It used to have a good customer service. Things have changed, but not for good.

full flihgt but crew and passengers all helped eachother we landed early! however we then had to wait 40 minutes on the tarmac to get into the gate there were people trying get connecting flights, assume its an airport issue but still frustrating

The crew was horrible. Cleo was the most unwelcoming flight attendant I’ve ever had.

Do not get fooled by the term “Delta One” flat bed! The seats were super narrow. The ottoman for the feet was so narrow that when you recline the seat in flat bed position, you can only fit one foot in the 8” width space. There was only 1 flight attendant for First Class. The breakfast took 2 hours to get served. Instead of offering French Toast, the served bread pudding. The champagne with orange juice or Mimosa tasted terrible. Almost all the movies offered were ridiculously old. For a long flight from San Francisco to NY, it was frustrating! I DO NOT RECOMMEND this flight!!!

Really big guy next to me Attendants moved him to an open row

the entertainment for the flight from DAL-LGA was not available.

It was a very smooth ride. Not sure on a flight departing at midnight can be much better but it was late arriving and I had an early day so really just the logistics.

The plane looks and feels like we are traveling in a 3rd world country airplane. Dirty bathrooms, horrible food, old and uncomfortable setting, my son’s little table was broken, the chair would stay recline, an so on.

Jet Blue keeps getting iit wrong. 4 hour mechanical delay followed by terrible boarding experience. This is my third horrific jet blue flight in 2024. I am going to try to avoid this loser in the sky

no wifi and the aircraft was very old with tiny 4” screens.

After we landed, we were held on the plane for 30 minutes. There was no one at the gate once we landed and we forced to sit on a plan that had already over an hour delayed.

Flawless trip. Pilot came out and introduced himself, welcomed everyone, made a light joke to put everyone at ease. Arrived quite early.

JetBlue's check-in was great, but there was an in-flight flight attendant who was very rude and unkind. I didn't realize that the bathrooms were already locked 30 mins prior to landing and needed to use the restroom. Instead of politely asking me to return, she rudely told me, 'No, bathrooms are locked! Go back to your seat!' The flight was more than an hour delay, which made me almost miss my connecting flight. I understand the reasoning, but the action they took to get a hold of maintenance was time consuming. It took them so long to get a hold of maintenance and for maintenance to get started. Most importantly, my 3 checked baggages are missing! I'm writing this review 3 days after my arrival to the Philippines, and my 3 checked baggages, where my wedding dress is, are all missing!

Safe takeoff and landing Better snacks and coffee. Headphones for the TV monitors.

I didn't like the 2 hour delay and then mechanical issue once we were on board.

Long flight but food was good, with free pillow and blanket. CREW WAS GOOD.

For some reason, the seats on this flight seemed unusually uncomfortable. Speaking with friends who took another JetBlue flight later in the day, they brought up the same issue.

JetBlue has really gone downhill. They have all the problems without the discounted price. If you need to get anywhere in time, this is no longer the airlines for you

That flight was smooth, and staff we courteous. it was a full flight so very tight. The boarding through security was not properly controlled. it was rushed and the scanning process for our bags, etc. was pilling up at the other end with no time to empty our belonging my personal items almost toppled over on the floor if i hadn't caught it rapidly. Was it just that time, or always like this - cant say. other than that all else was fine.

Wheelchair assistance was not complete. The person left me at the departure gate without informing the groundstaff of my requirements. I had to walk to the departure counter to ask for help to reach the plane door. The crew informed me that in future they were not allowed to help passengers like me, senior citizen and Wheelchair passenger with placing their carry on bags in the overhead compartments!

I liked that we arrived earlier, you could improve your snacks give away

We learned certain countries (a few) require a notarized letter from an ex to give permission for children to travel to those countries with the other spouse together with birth certificates. To find this out one hour before flying—not good. Nowhere is it documented by the airlines though they require it. Make sure about all documentation required.

The best part was we weren’t too delayed. Seating space in economy is insulting and about as uncomfortable as one could expect before mutiny breaks out. Prep for landing happened well over 45 minutes before wheels down: no final garbage pickup and it interrupted those of us who needed tray tables down for dinner, etc.

My luggage didn't make my transfer in Newark. It took 4 days to receive it even though I tried to pick it up at the airpory

Nice clean aircraft. Friendly crew. On time. Easy flight change.

Late by nearly 2 hours due to taking that long to change a tire on the plane.

Check in and boarding were very easy. Quite good food and a complimentary glass of wine with dinner. The acoustics on the TV difficult at times, and the options extensive though not very updated.

They cancelled our flight at the last minute due to mechanical issues. Rather, they “delayed” it till the next morning. A pain in the neck when traveling with two young children. Crew was really nice, which made up for it somewhat. This is the second flight from delta that was cancelled this year. Definitely going to fly another airline when possible

Cut off carry ons, had to check, got on and there was plenty of bin space. Disappointing.

One of the worst flights I have ever taken Delayed over an hour without communication from the crew; very scary Entertainment not working Crew NASTY cabin cold

May never fly American again Delay in take off WITHOUT EXPLANATION Cabin freezing Crew NASTY entertainment did not work entire flight

The flight was so short that the lack of leg room didn't bother me for long. The plane was smaller so only two seats per row and there were chargers. However, they didn't serve any snacks.

Horrible trip. I won't fly AA again Boarding was a nightmare because they squeezed people into the waiting like sardines. My connection was 30 minutes and the run to the gate was horrible. Then the flight was canceled AFTER boarding. The Flight attendants did not know what to do and gave out the wrong instructions. They finally sent us to a different gate. Again, the waiting was like a sardine tin. The flight was okay and my baggage arrived fine.

My first time flying American Airlines, my first flight to CLT was wonderful and flight attendants was nice and had great customer service. My second flight from CLT to NY was very delayed due to whatever reason the crew was not greeting other than that I’m rate 8 .

Ther is no fly, over book .and they let out in San pedro sula ,antil Monday 2 of October 2023

it was a nightmare of a trip. multiple delays, dirty bathrooms, long wait in tarmac, ran out of fuel diverting flight. on and all over 4 hour delay!

19 hr delay requiring a change to red eye. No lounge access without paying. Loss of seat upgrade fee.

Check in was horrible in Miami. The woman was rude and not helpful with the questions. There was nothing to like at the check in and there were really slow even for First class passenger like me.

I like strict carry on policy. Quick to board, quick to leave. Less time at gate and get there quicker

comfortable flight. not fond of the idea to pay for every little detail. baggage checkin or carry ons, basic snack, or some sort of basic entertainment/wifi. would be nice to offer these as perks and stop with the penny pinching.

The seats were larger & more roomy than the old planes. the crew was excellent. . overall a very good flight.

No water for handwashing and they charged $5 for water. Spirit up-charges for every little thing and the planes themselves are old and nauseating.

It was the most smooth landing I have ever experienced (and I travel often). The crew was also very pleasant and the pilots kept us informed. Not even a drink unless a charge though is really bad!

My wife’s in a wheelchair excellent service from check-in to the gate on the plane off the excellent service all around excellent price

Wifi went from normal to very slow. Some sites wouldn't load

Flying with Spirit is simple- it’s a minimalist airline that gets you from Point A to Point B. I have flown Spirit many times & have never had a problem with it, just don’t expect luxury or convenience. And know that, because the tickets are so affordable, the real charge comes in the bags, food, & extra purchases. The planes are simple, modern, and clean. They function in a way that moves large amounts of people in a more efficient manner, so the seats aren’t the most comfortable but I always bring a pillow and have no problem. I will continue to fly Spirit & would recommend to others

Comfortable experience but the boarding process was not efficient and the delay in departure caused some anxieties for the connecting flight. Flight from FLL to LGA was on time but the legroom for a taller person was a bit uncomfortable

The seats had good room for the knees but the seats don't recline. The service was friendly from start to finish

When the English King, Charles II, took over control of the area in the 1660s, he granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York, hence the area being named after that English city. In 1898, Brooklyn became a borough of the city and there are now four others, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx. Manhattan is, perhaps, the most famous of these because it is associated with the skyscrapers for which New York is best-known. Manhattan is also home to America's financial center on Wall Street as well as its famous Central Park, a tourist attraction which is enjoyed by millions of visitors and New Yorkers each year. With an incredible entertainment and sporting scene, vacation deals in New York appeal to a wide group of people in America so don't delay and book your trip to the Big Apple now!

Things to know before visiting New York

Flight and hotel packages in New York constitute the best way of getting value for money when visiting the Big Apple. With an urban population that is twice the size of even a sprawling city like Los Angeles , obtaining a great price for a hotel room is not always easy when demand is high, so booking one in advance when you purchase your flights makes a lot of sense. The city is served by three international airports and it is worth planning your onward journey into the heart of New York so that you are prepared when your plane touches down. Public transportation, private car rental and taxi fares can all be obtained with ease from each of the city's air hubs. The city is served by a subway system that is simple enough for newcomers to use, too. Purchase a card before you travel which you then put credit on. Every time you enter the subway system your card is swiped and the credit level drops accordingly. Bear in mind that this is regardless of how many stops you travel for, however, so short journeys cost just as much as long ones. Ask us at eDreams for more travel advice.

What is the weather in New York?

Enjoying a humid subtropical climate, any vacation in New York can be liable to changing weather conditions. In the summer, the city gets hot and can reach as high as 100 °F in July and August. However, as most buildings are air-conditioned, this is not something to worry about. In the winter months, snow is a frequent occurrence but the city's authorities are usually prepared for it and have the streets cleared to allow the usual daily life of New Yorkers to continue unimpeded. On average, April is the rainiest month of the year but the fact is that visitors could see rainfall no matter when they arrive so carrying some suitable clothing with you is advisable at all times. Vacation packages in New York are great no matter when you choose to travel, so make an inquiry today and get the ball rolling.

Things to do in New York

Although travel packages in New York come in various forms, one of the best ways of getting around the Big Apple these days is by bike. The city's authorities have encouraged the use of bicycles by creating a number of dedicated routes for them away from heavy traffic. Tourists can enjoy them by hiring one of the many city-owned bikes dotted around the place. Given that Broadway is the theatrical center of the entire country, no trip to the Big Apple would be complete without booking a show or two. Tickets can be expensive for the most popular shows, so look for last minute returns and bag yourself a bargain. Situated on the Upper West Side of Central Park, the American Natural History Museum is a place not to be missed, either. It has exhibition spaces dedicated to everything from space exploration to dinosaurs. Vacation getaways in New York should include some form of cultural experience, after all. Contact eDreams today to find out more.

What to see in New York in 2 or 3 days?

Travel packages in New York which have a limited amount of time can be exciting. Even if you cannot see everything, there are some highlights to pick out. A trip on the Staten Island ferry from the southern end of Manhattan, for example, allows you to see many of the major sights, like the Statue of Liberty, with ease. What's more, it is a free service. Vacation deals in New York that are based in Midtown should also include a trip to the city's most iconic skyscraper, the Empire State Building. Its viewing platform allows visitors to take in nearly the whole city in one glance. Finally, no trip to New York would be complete without a few hours in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the world's greatest treasure houses of world art. Thinking of putting an itinerary together? Contact us to see how we can help.

What to eat in New York?

With so many world cultures intermingling in the city, no vacation in New York would be satisfactory without consuming some of the great food on offer. For example, one of the city's oldest restaurants, Delmonico's, has been operating since the 1830s and it serves superb eggs Benedict. Katz's Delicatessen is rightly famous for its excellent pastrami on rye, a favorite of many New Yorkers. Falafel is another dish that is loved all over the city. Try it for lunch at a place like Mamoun's located close to the city's university campus. Like other cities on the east coast , New York enjoys a great reputation for seafood restaurants, too. Cheap vacation packages are available from eDreams right now, so make a booking and start exploring the culinary delights of New York City soon.

Planning a Broadway-themed trip to NYC can be a dream come true for theater enthusiasts, but it's essential to plan carefully to make the most of your experience.

Here are some tips to help you plan the best Broadway-themed trip to NYC:

1. Research the Shows: Before you go, research the current and upcoming shows on Broadway. Look for reviews, recommendations, and popular productions to create a list of must-see shows. Planning ahead will help you secure tickets to the most in-demand performances.

2. Book Tickets Early: Broadway shows are incredibly popular, and tickets can sell out fast. Once you've decided on the shows you want to see, book your tickets as early as possible to secure the best seats and avoid disappointment.

3. Consider a Broadway Tour: If you want to gain a deeper understanding of Broadway's history, architecture, and insider information, consider booking a guided Broadway tour. These tours can offer unique behind-the-scenes access and knowledge that you wouldn't get on your own.

4. Plan Your Dining: NYC is home to an abundance of fantastic dining options, and it's important to plan your meals around your theater schedule. Make reservations at popular restaurants near the theaters you'll be visiting to ensure you have time to enjoy a delicious meal before or after the show.

There's a lot to see and do in the area beyond just attending shows.

6. Stay in the Theater District: Consider finding accommodation in the Theater District to be close to all the action. Staying nearby will make it easier to navigate between shows and explore the surrounding area without spending too much time on transportation.

New York holiday FAQs

Make the most of your new york holiday.

With so much to see and do in New York, it can be tricky to know where to start, but don’t fret – our essential guide to holidays in New York will have you looking like a local in no time.

Where are the best areas to stay in New York?

New York’s sights are spread around the city, though most first-timers will want to stay somewhere on Manhattan Island. We’ve pulled out some of the best areas to stay in the city, below.

Many first-time visitors opt to stay near Times Square. It’s not known as ‘The Crossroads of the World’ for nothing: it’s one of the world’s busiest pedestrian areas and is well-connected to many of the city’s main sights. Stay at Tempo by Hilton New York Times Square and enjoy a finely tuned sleep environment and a dedicated Get Ready Zone designed for the responsible traveller. Midtown, the area around Times Square, is where you’ll find the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, and the Rockefeller Center. Try booking the New York Hilton Midtown .

If you’re hankering for a luxury hotel with all the trimmings: bells, whistles and bellhops, then Central Park, on the Upper East Side, is your best bet. This area is one of the most expensive in the city. This is the ultimate destination for culture (think opera, ballet, jazz, classical music, Michelin-starred restaurants) – and a taste of old New York. As you walk along Fifth Avenue, bordering Central Park, you’ll encounter ‘Museum Mile’, an area of prestigious institutions like the Met and the Frick. Stay at Park Lane New York and relish timeless views from the intimate rooftop, Darling.

Staying on the Lower East Side puts you near Brooklyn Bridge and the Tenement Museum – a popular museum exploring the area’s working-class roots. The LES has gentrified rapidly in the last couple of decades. Hotel Indigo Lower East Side New York gives you a feel for the area as it is now: trendy, young and fun.

Several eye-catching cast iron buildings form the backbone of the SoHo district, which sits below Midtown. The name comes from the area’s geography: it’s the region south of Houston Street, in downtown Broadway. SoHo is synonymous with shopping – with boutiques for everyone from Wolf & Badger to Celine. Stay at NoMo SoHo for interiors stuffed with vintage finds and curious furnishings. Tribeca sits along the Hudson River, north of the Financial District. Hudson River Park and its promenade provide a breath of fresh air amid the hustle and bustle of Manhattan – quite literally. Stay at Walker Hotel Tribeca which gives a nod to the neighbourhood’s industrial past with practical design, utilitarian furnishings and whitewashed brickwork.

When is the best time of year to visit NYC?

New York never stays the same. It refashions itself throughout the year, offering something different in every season. Visit in spring and stroll through blossoming parks. Toast to the skyline on a terrace in summer. See the city’s trees painted in fiery reds and golden hues in autumn. Or go in winter and wrap yourself in a big coat before staring up at the famous Rockefeller Christmas tree – there's a reason so many films romanticise Christmas in New York. Check out our New York Travel Guide for a lowdown on the city's seasonal highlights and start planning your New York city break now.

Are there any places that we can park safely overnight in the U.S.? We would arrive at noon, and pick up the car the next day in the afternoon. We would probably keep a bag or two locked in the car (out of sight) so safety is critical. Cost isn't as important.

Perhaps the Seneca hotel valet? Or near OneNiagara. Any recommendations?

Hidden Cameras: What Travelers Need to Know

We talked to security and privacy experts about Airbnb’s new ban on surveillance cameras, your privacy rights and how to find a hidden camera.

A white-and-black surveillance camera device sits on a table in a hotel- or apartment-like setting

By Elaine Glusac

This month, Airbnb announced that, starting April 30, the company would ban the use of surveillance cameras in its rentals. The news was welcomed by those concerned about privacy.

“Cameras are both creepy and a threat,” said Albert Fox Cahn, the executive director of the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project , which has campaigned for a ban on cameras in Airbnbs since 2022. “People are terrified about having their intimate moments photographed without their consent and having owners able to monitor their activities within a rental.”

For many travelers, Airbnb’s new policy has prompted some fundamental questions: What were the cameras doing there in the first place? And what are travelers’ rights when it comes to privacy in hotels and rental homes?

Public use of cameras

Cameras, of course, are everywhere in public life, from the self-checkout kiosks at big-box retailers to airport terminals.

Like other businesses, hotels and vacation rentals use surveillance cameras for two reasons, said Michael McCall, a Hilton Hotels Fellow in the School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University: To protect their customers and their property.

A traveler might feel more secure getting to a hotel room or rental apartment with a security camera in a hallway, for example. And a hotel or host might use cameras to monitor property damage or theft, though the question of whether surveillance is effective in preventing crime is a longstanding debate between privacy and safety advocates.

“There’s a balance between ‘How do I protect my stuff’ and at the same time not intrude on the expected privacy of the guest,” Mr. McCall said. “Airbnb said the inside is off-limits.”

States vary on whether and what degree of consent is required for surveillance, and there are different rules for audio and video recording.

“U.S. privacy law is fragmented at best,” wrote Doris DelTosto Brogan, a law professor and the Heller McGuinness Endowed Leadership Chair at Villanova University’s Charles Widger School of Law, in Villanova, Penn., in an email. She noted that some federal privacy statutes apply to all states, but that each state can develop its own privacy laws.

Airbnb previously navigated these shoals by requiring that indoor cameras in common spaces, such as hallways and kitchens, had to be disclosed to the renter.

Since 2022, the short-term rental platform Vrbo has banned the use of indoor cameras except for those that are disclosed to guests and can be deactivated by them.

In a statement, the American Hotel and Lodging Association , which represents 80 percent of all franchised hotels in the United States, said surveillance cameras in hotels should be limited to common areas — like lobbies and pools — for security purposes.

‘Reasonable expectation of privacy’

Though regulations vary by state, more legal protections cover nonconsensual videotaping in private areas such as bedrooms and bathrooms.

At the federal level, the Video Voyeurism Prevention Act of 2004 prohibits “knowingly videotaping, photographing, filming, recording by any means, or broadcasting an image of a private area of an individual, without that individual’s consent, under circumstances in which that individual has a reasonable expectation of privacy.”

Many states as well as federal laws hinge on the expectation of privacy. “So that would be often, for example, a bedroom or a bathroom, but not necessarily a common area like a living room,” said Raymond Ku, the John Homer Kapp Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio.

But it’s the illegal use of hidden cameras that have shocked travelers.

Earlier this month, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship cabin attendant was arrested on federal charges for producing and possessing child sexual abuse imagery by installing video cameras inside guests’ bathrooms and capturing intimate images of passengers as young as 10.

In February, a man was arrested in Palm Beach County, in Florida, on charges of video voyeurism for surreptitiously videotaping 16 different people, sometimes at Airbnb locations.

In September, a 14-year-old passenger on an American Airlines plane discovered an iPhone taped to a toilet seat that her family said a flight attendant had installed .

Legal and security experts believe such invasions are the exceptions, considering the millions of people who travel daily, but that they warrant vigilance.

“People who want to use cameras for nefarious reasons are still in the game,” said Kenneth Bombace, the chief executive of the intelligence firm Global Threat Solutions , describing a new generation of recording devices that are small, subtle and inexpensive.

How to find hidden cameras

In his business, Mr. Bombace uses high-tech devices to conduct searches — from hotel rooms to corporate boardrooms — for hidden recording devices.

For travelers without a high profile or celebrity status, he recommends a “common-sense search of a location.”

This includes looking for small recording devices or telltale lenses in anything connected to a power source such as a clock radio, power outlets themselves and battery-charged electronics such as smoke detectors and Bluetooth speakers. Turn off the lights and use a flashlight — a cellphone flashlight will do — to look for flashing lights that might reveal a camera.

If you’re uncertain, you can throw a towel over an electronic device or tape over the outlets.

Because many recording devices require an internet connection to stream images, check the Wi-Fi network for any connected devices and ask the homeowner or manager what they are. Apps such as Network Analyzer and Ubiquiti WiFiman will scan networks and detect connected devices.

Numerous portable gadgets on Amazon priced at less than $150 claim to detect hidden cameras.

“None of the technologies are 100 percent effective, but they mitigate and lower the chances of a recording device going undetected,” Mr. Bombace said.

What recourse do you have?

If you find a hidden camera in a hotel room or short-term rental, gather evidence by taking pictures or videos and contacting the police. Then, find new accommodations.

Airbnb directs guests to report privacy violations to its customer support team . Vrbo does the same, noting on its website that if you leave a property because of the violation, “the host may be required to refund the entirety of the stay” and could be kicked off the platform.

Hosts still have methods to ensure their property rules aren’t being abused. Both Vrbo and Airbnb allow hosts to use devices outdoors that measure sound decibels without recording conversations if they are disclosed to renters. Vrbo cites their use as fending off potential noise complaints from neighbors. Airbnb, which has a ban on party houses , says the devices may detect “unauthorized parties.”

The platforms still allow external cameras at rental properties as long as they are disclosed to the guest before arrival. The disclosure is usually included in the listing, and the device should not be used to peep indoors. Vrbo goes even further regarding outdoor pool cameras, requiring notice both in property descriptions and on site.

You’ve been warned: Spontaneous skinny-dipping in the pool could be captured on camera.
