If you are brave enough you can take an invigorating break from the sauna and roll in the snow or, if you are lucky, marvel at the Northern Lights above.

Start the day with a relaxed breakfast after which it’s time for you to meet the dogs! You will be given expert tuition in handling your own dog team before being given your own sled. Each person drives their own sled with four dogs throughout the tour. The dogs are very strong and are born to run so the start is always exciting as they finally get their wish!

This is your chance to be a Musher and no doubt you’ll enjoy this incredible mode of transport, as the dogs yelp and bark their way across the frozen lakes and through pine forests. Along the trail, we’ll stop at our Lavvu, Sami-style tipi tent, for a warm lunch cooked over an open fire pit before getting back on the sled and heading down the trail once more.

Once we’ve had our fill of dog sledding, we arrive back at the kennels where another comfortable stay at our lodge awaits.

Notes for families

Families with children aged 4-16yrs, the children will ride on the guide’s sled and adults will get their own sleds to drive.

Meals included: Lunch

Today may be your last day but the adventure has not come to an end yet! After breakfast you will be given instructions on how to drive a snowmobile before the surge of engine power fills your body on a thrilling ride through the frozen landscape. This is a guided tour and you will need a full drivers licence to drive a machine (Minimum 18yrs). Machines are shared between two people and we will stop half way through for you to swap drivers if you wish. Helmets are provided and must be worn.

If you do not want to snowmobile this tour is interchangable with:

Snowshoe Walk – take a self-guided snowshoe walk up to a top of a nearby hill where you will get an incredible view of the area, seeing for miles across frozen rivers and pine forests. We provide you with high quality Fimbulvetr snow shoes (size 37-50) to help you along the forest trails.

ICEHOTEL visit – The hotel has a world-wide reputation for being the “coolest” hotel in the world – it is in fact a constant -5 degrees centigrade no matter what the temperature outside! This temperature makes it comfortable to stay in and walk around but cool enough for the hotel’s walls, beds, chairs and bar (complete with ice glasses) to stay frozen. The tour ticket allows you to view the 20 or so individually hand-crafted rooms with ice sculptures as well as the ice Church. Each year the hotel melts and is rebuilt so every room is different to the last and truly unique!

Our services end with a transfer back to Kiruna or the airport at around midday.

All tours are self-catering, there is a supermarket in Kiruna and we will assist you with a shopping trip on your first day to buy groceries for your stay.

After a warming cup of tea or coffee and an introduction to what awaits over the following days, you will be supplied with high quality Arctic outer-wear to keep you toasty during your adventure. Afterwards, you can choose to relax in your room or take a wander in the immediate surroundings.

Families with children aged 4-16yrs, the children will ride on the guide’s sled and adults will get their own sleds to drive.

Today the adventure continues! On your final morning, you’ll have the chance to take a self-guided snow-shoe tour into the forest surrounding the kennel/lodge and up to a viewing point on top of the hill where you’ll get a stunning view across the frozen landscape. Please note this is a bit of a climb! But worth it for the view. Your trip with us will finish around midday when you’ll be dropped off at the airport or in Kiruna to suit you.

multi day dog sled tours

5-day Wilderness & Tundra Safari

This is essentially the same mushing product as our arctic mushing week but without the free day for optional activities and the nights pre and post safari in a local hotel. During this mushing-packed product we sled for five full days, covering from 30km to 40km each day.

All of your meals, suitable snow-suits and boots, expert guiding and the five days of husky dogsledding with your own team of huskies are included in the price, as well as wilderness accommodation in a variety of cabins and huts. NB: At least one night is normally spent in a very basic wilderness hut so that you can have a true arctic experience on the high tundra plateau.

The optimum group size for this safari is six clients with a guide. With this number we can move easily through the wilderness without too many stops, we can take advantage of a wide range of hut options and the small group size works well in the wilderness setting. Most people find that when we combine would-be mushers to reach optimal group sizes, that the shared experience with like-minded adventurers is part of the fun.

If you are interested in an exclusive safari for just two people, or in booking as a slightly larger family group, please consider April. It is rarely possible to accommodate such requests in our peak season - unless, of course, the exclusive groups would like to 'pay the safari full'. NB: For groups over 8 we tend to adapt the route slightly so as to utilise one or two of the few larger cabins available in the area.

General Information

Programme Duration: 5 days Number of Days of Mushing: 5 Availability: From the beginning of January until the end of April. Please check our current availability first, to see that we have spaces available when you hope to visit. Schedule: This product generally runs from Monday through Friday, weekly, although exact timings depend on our overall bookings each month.

Safari Accommodation & Board The first night of the tour returns to the homestead where people have the option to spend the evening relaxing in a cosy kota or joining in fully with farm life - including the feeding of 170 odd dogs. The safari's safety presentation is also given on this evening. The 3 remaining nights of the tour are spent in log cabins, only one of which has electricity and a shower. Full board is included throughout.

Clients are responsible for their own airport transfers, board and hotel nights on either side of the safari. If you want help with transfers or room and board either side of the tour itself, please choose one of our package options. We may be able to pick you up from hotels in central Hetta, but if you are staying further afield, you will need to get to our base under your own steam by 10am on Sunday morning.

Price: Adults €1875 Price includes: 5 days of mushing for 30—40km per day through the arctic wilderness with a personal dog team; kit and clothing suitable for the arctic; expert guiding through the tour; a guided farm visit and sled-driving training session; briefings on arctic safety and survival; a personal mentor during your first night of helping with feeding and other dog-related tasks on the farm and 4 night's accommodation with full board (1 night on the farm homestead and 3 in wilderness cabins).

Client Feedback:

We did a five day tour: It was an unbelievable experience.

My son and I took part in the five day husky safari..it was tough but one of the great experiences of my life. Owner Pasi and the other guides tried to make it as much five star as possible when you are driving a six dog power sled and staying in basic cabins and having a blizzard one day. The scenery is exceptional, they love the dogs and the dogs love everyone...you have to really love dogs to do this since some of the dogs sleep in the huts at night...but they are warm on a cold night. You also need to be relatively fit and it does get VERY cold. But this is a once in a lifetime thing to do.

"Pasi was always around, securing our trip with snowmobile and helping with the dogs, and doing the catering. He had his silent finnish way of speaking less, but always when he spoke, we listened very carefully. You don't often meet a man who has "done" the south pole without assistance."

"Anna was keeping the base functioning. She issued our kit and clothing and gave pre-departure safety briefings. Afterwards, she checked our knowledge about our dogs. Yes, I say 'our dogs'. Because during those three days you got to know your team well, and saying goodbye was difficult."

"I can recommend Hetta Huskies for everyone who wants to have an experience on the arctic. If you are bored of all-inclusive packege holidays, and you want some action and new experiences, go to Hetta."

8 day dog sledding adventure on Ammassalik Island

East Greenland is probably the most isolated part of this great country. It is also a place where old traditions are still very much upheld. The way of life primarily requires hunting and ice fishing in the winter, coupled with dogsledding as the means of transportation. For visitors dog sledding is a great way to experience the magnificent unspoiled landscape of this isolated area as well as get a feel for the traditional arctic way of life. On this tour we will set out from Tasiilaq for a tour of the Ammassalik Island. We will see the Sermilik ice fjord, visit the small settlement of Tiniteqilaaq where we will dine with a local family. Before turning back through the middle of the Ammassalik Island to Tasiilaq. There we have time to visit the town or to go on an (optional) snow-shoe hike to the valley of flowers. This is a tour that takes you deep into the arctic world of East Greenland.

Included:  Helicopter transfer from Kulusuk to Tasiilaq and pick up in Tasiilaq. 4 days of guided dogsledding (two persons per sled), 1 day of guided snowshoeing, full board. 3 nights in guesthouse in Tasiilaq, 2 nights in cozy little cabins at the Sermilik Icefjord, 1 night in a hut and 1 night in sleeping bag accommodation in Tiniteqilaaq, snowshoes (for the snowshoe-hike).

Read about Pam's exhilarating dog sledding adventure with us in the winter of 2016.

Not included:  Flights to/from Kulusuk, p ersonal equipment, insurance and expenses.

Flights for Reykjavik-Kulusuk-Reykjavik are from 585 Euros + taxes. The price depends on the available flight seat on the concerned date. You are allowed to check in 20 kg. of luggage + 6 kg. handluggage on the plane. But on the dogsled, you can bring 10 kg. It is possible to leave luggage behind in the guesthouse in Tasiilaq.

Please Note - to this tour apply special terms

If you have more questions, please check our  FAQs . If you do not find the answer please contact us:  [email protected]

For a shorter dog sled adventure check out our self guided tour Greenland Winter Highlights .

Day 1: Reykjavík - Kulusuk - Tasiilaq The tour starts at Reykjavík airport. From here you will board the plane for the Two hour flight to Kulusuk. From Kulusuk you take the helicopter over to Tasiilaq on Ammassalik island where you will be met by our local partner who will take you to your accommodation. In the evening a local chef will prepare a dinner for the group in your shared guesthouse, and your guide will brief you on the comming days. This will also be an opportunity for you to go over your equipment with the guide. Night in Guesthouse.

Day 2: Tasiilaq - The Sermilik Coast Today we’re head out so get ready for the big adventure! Your will be picked up at the guest house and taken to the outskirts of Tasiilaq where our dog team is waiting. The guide will show you the basics of dog sledding, and how to behave with the dogs. With 2 persons per sledge, we will then head, north over King Oscars fjord and up to the big lake Qordlortoq between the granite mountain ranges. There we have short break before continuing to a place called the coffee shop.  This is not really a shop though, but a gathering of a few huts in the middle of the Ammassalik island, where everyone travelling on dogsled or snowmobile usually takes a break, to drink a coffee or have a snack.  Turning west in the direction of the Sermilik fjord, we head on through the snow-covered landscape and up to an altitude of 500m. From this altitude we have a spectacular view over the Sermilik Ice fjord. Our dogs then take us downhill through a beautiful riverbed to the small cabins that will serve as our base for the next two nights. Sitting on the edge of the Ice fjord we will have view over the fjord and the ice. Night in camp Qatoo -  Camp Qatoo is a constellation of five small 2-persons cabins and a collective cabin with a fully equipped kitchen, dining area and a lounge. The cabins are rustic and cosy, and very comfortable. The camp is located by the marvelous Icefjord Sermilik and each cabin has an icefjord view. Dog sledging:  6 hours total

Day 3: The Sermilik Coast Today will be devoted to the exploration of the surrounding area and peaks. We will venture out up on a close by peak (in snowshoes), in an attempt to get a superb view of the Sermilik Ice fjord and the great Greenland Icecap across the fjord on the horizon. How far and high we will be able to go depends on the snow conditions but none the less this day is certain to be an adventure! Night at the same cabin. Snow shoeing:  4-6 hours

Day 4: The Sermilik Coast - Tiniteqilaaq After a hearty breakfast we pack up our sledges and head up along the coast towards the north and to the small settlement of Tiniteqilaaq (approx 125 hab.). Here we have time to visit the village and get some insight in to the Inuit way of life in these harsh arctic conditions. We will spend the night in sleeping bag accommodation at a house in the settlement with basic facilities (shower is in the local service house).  Dog sledging:  4 hours

Day 5: Tiniteqilaaq - Pitserpaajik Today we start our way back south. We go over the straight that separates Tiniteqilaaq and Ammassalik Island and turn slightly east into a valley that is a riverbed. The ride down this riverbed is one of the most beautiful on the island. On both sides we are surrounded by peaks and glaciers as we speed over the snowfields.  Our route takes us over a fjord and all the way down to Pitserpaajik peninsula where a hut awaits us. Night in a hut or in tents which can actually be warmer. The hut is used for preparing meals and eating). Dog sledging:  6 hours

Day 6: Pitserpaajik - Tasiilaq From the Pitserpaajik peninsula we head west in the direction of the lakes. Our way then takes us over the snow straight through Ammassalik Island until we come back to the town of Tasiilaq. After leaving the sledges and saying goodbye to the dog teams you will be taken back to your accommodation. Night in guest house. Dog sledging:  6 hours

Day 7: Tasiilaq Free day to explore the town of Tasiilaq or go for an optional tour on snowshoes to the valley of Flowers. The town of Tasiilaq is the administrative center of East Greenland.  It has an interesting museum and some shops. Above the town lies the valley of Flowers in its winter coat offering an opportunity to enjoy a snow hike in the arctic environment up to a view point over the town. Night in guest house.

Day 8: Tasiilaq - Kulusuk - Reykjavik After saying farewell to all we have a helicopter transfer to Kulusuk, where we get on our flight back to Reykjavík where the tour ends at the airport.

NB. It is likely that you will see northern lights during your stay, but we can of course not guarantee it as it depends on the aurora activity and the cloud cover in the area.

Dog Sledding - Greenland

For your own wellbeing and safety we strongly suggest following the advice of our equipment list, this includes having good quality rain-gear, tops and bottoms! Also respect that cotton clothing is not appropriate for any strenuous outdoor activity – this includes jeans and t-shirts. Modern outdoor clothing is by far more comfortable and will greatly improve your experience.

The winter in Greenland is cold but dry. You should prepare for this before your arrival. Make sure you bring plenty of warm clothing. The different layers need to be worn together so your outer layers should be roomy enough to accommodate plenty of insulating layers underneath. Make sure that you are able to cover any exposed skin (face mask / buff & ski-goggles). After the face, hands and feet are most prone to cold injuries, so a selection of good gloves and mittens is an absolute must as well as good insulated polar-boots. An insulated overall, a sleeping bag and polar boots can be rented through [email protected]

Boots and clothing:

  • Trousers – thick softshell or fleece pants

  • Insulated jacket, ski-jacket or down jacket that fits over other layers
  • An insulated overall is also available on location, free of charge
  • Over-pants – windproof and breathable
  • Insulated over pants, e.g. ski-pants
  • Ski-gloves; 2 – 3 pairs of warm windproof gloves
  • Mittens; Large and well insulated expedition mittens
  • Down, fleece of fibre insulation – wind and waterproof, Consider bringing 2 pairs of different weight
  • Linger gloves, thin fleece or wool gloves that can be worn under mittens or ski gloves

Seavey now has the most Iditarod wins, but Alaska's historic race is marred by 3 sled dog deaths

A NCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Alaska's annual Iditarod dog sled race ended with a victory for the ages: One of the biggest names in the sport came from behind after a moose attack to win the grueling, dayslong contest for an unprecedented sixth time.

But Dallas Seavey's record-setting win late Tuesday was overshadowed by the deaths of three dogs in this year's storied endurance race across the Alaska wilderness, and renewed calls from an animal rights group to stop the race. A fourth dog, one of Seavey's, was severely injured by a moose on the trail.

Seavey, 37, finished the 51st Iditarod in 9 days, 2 hours, 16 minutes and 8 seconds and won just over $55,000 for first place. As he neared the finish line, he jumped off his sled and ran with his dogs, pumping his fists. After he reached the finish line, he hugged each dog on his team — and they gave him sloppy dog kisses as they sat on the winner's podium.

“This one was supposed to be hard,” Seavey told the crowd. “It had to be special, it had to be more than just a normal Iditarod, and for me, it was.”

The Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race takes human-and-dog teams across 1,000 miles (1,609 kilometers) of wilderness on a trail that traverses two mountain ranges, the Yukon River and a slice of the frozen Bering Sea before ending in the Gold Rush town of Nome just south of the Arctic Circle.

But the deaths of the dogs on three separate teams, two led by rookie mushers and a third in his second Iditarod, cast a pall over the race as the Iditarod ended a five-year streak without a dog death. Five dogs also died and eight were injured in collisions with snow machines during training before the race on shared-use trails.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the loudest critic of the Iditarod, called for officials to end the contest once and for all.

“The Iditarod is the shame of Alaska,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement. “How many more dogs need to die before this stops? Dogs’ lives are worth more than this.”

The Iditarod did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Mushers Issac Teaford, of Salt Lake City, and Hunter Keefe, of Knik, both voluntarily quit the course after their dogs died, or they would have risked being removed by the race marshal, per Iditarod rules.

The third dog on rookie Calvin Daugherty’s team collapsed on the trail about 10 miles (16 kilometers) before reaching the checkpoint in the village of Shaktoolik. A necropsy is planned, and Daugherty also scratched.

A moose severely injured one of Seavey's dogs in an attack on the trail early on. Seavey shot and killed the moose with a handgun and gutted it. Race rules require any big game animal killed in defense of life or property to be gutted before the musher moves on. But because he spent only 10 minutes gutting the moose, race officials gave Seavey a two-hour time penalty.

Seavey and his team battled back, and by Tuesday morning they had a three-hour lead over their nearest competitor before sweeping to victory later in the day.

“When you look back at 1,000 miles of what these dogs just covered, the challenges they faced, you can’t swallow that in one bite, but we can have one good step at a time," he said of his dogs. "And if you can keep doing that, it leads to something.”

Seavey’s name is found throughout the Iditarod record book. In 2005, he became the youngest musher to run in the race, and in 2012, its youngest champion.

Seavey also won Iditarod championships in 2014 , 2015 , 2016 and 2021 . He had previously been tied with now-retired musher Rick Swenson with five titles apiece. Swenson won the Iditarod in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1991.

Seavey’s family history is deeply entwined with the Iditarod. His grandfather, Dan Seavey, helped organize and ran the first Iditarod in 1973, and his father, Mitch Seavey, is a three-time champion.

Dallas Seavey almost took a different path in the sports world. He was the first Alaskan to win a USA national wrestling championship when he took the 125-pound Gregco-Roman title in 2003 and trained for a year at the U.S. Olympic Training Center before concussions led him to back to mushing.

The Iditarod started March 2 for 38 mushers with a ceremonial run in Anchorage , followed by the competitive start on March 3 in Willow, about 75 miles north of Anchorage. Seven mushers dropped out of the race this year.

This story has been corrected to show that five dogs died in pre-race training, not eight.

Seavey overcame killing a moose and receiving a time penalty to win the Iditarod on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, a record-breaking sixth championship in the world’s most famous sled dog race. See the best examples of underground Soviet-era architecture on a 1.5-hour walking tour of Moscows metro stations! With an expert guide at your side, visit five of Moscows must-see stations, including iconic Mayakovskaya , and learn all about Stalins visions for the former Soviet Union. Hear about the Metro-2, a secret line said to have been used by the government and Kgb , and see grandiose architecture, mosaics, sculptures and more!

Know More about this tour

Meet your expert guide outside the Kremlin and head underground with your Moscow metro ticket to discover the citys underground treasures. See the most interesting stations with extravagant Soviet-era architecture and hear the history surrounding the metro stations from your expert guide. Widely praised as one of Stalins finest architectural achievements, Moscow 's subway was created to symbolize his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn about his successors, who later toned down the ornateness of the subways architecture, and see how the different eras are reflected in the character of each station. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today. Visit Revolution Square Station ( Ploschad revolyutsii ) and admire the 72 magnificent bronze sculptures that depict the people of the former Soviet Union, set underneath marble arches designed by the legendary Russian architect Alexey Dushkin. Another Dushkin-created station is Novoslobodskaya , and youll head here next to admire its dazzling stained-glass panels. Discover Baroque dcor, vaulted ceilings and chandeliers at Komsomolskaya Station, and then marvel at the grandiose and pompous design of Kurskaya Station -- one of the first stations to be built. Its design reflects Stalins communist ideals and youll note its left-wing slogans on the walls, next to mosaics that symbolize the victory of his regime over poverty and starvation. Finally, pay a visit to Mayakovskaya , the station thats named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky, and see why its often considered the most beautiful and iconic Moscow Metro station. Gaze upward at some 30 fascinating mosaics that depict Stalins vision for a bright Soviet future, and then admire the features of typical pre-World War II architecture that the station embodies. Your tour ends here.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
