Las Vegas When to Go

When it comes to Las Vegas, there really isn’t a bad time to visit. Virtually every major holiday is a prime time, but Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve are particularly popular. Big conventions happen throughout the year, but especially in January, early spring, and October to December. Even relatively slow times like August and the two weeks prior to Christmas are just opportunities for better rates and more breathing room.

There are things to be aware of during each season. Weather warms up quickly in spring, with temperatures in the 80s to 90s during the day (though it can still be cool at night), so pool season is always early here. In summer, temperatures are regularly over 100 (and stay high even at midnight), making drinking water and applying sunscreen universal necessities and outdoor walking discouraged. When fall arrives, outdoor activities such as hiking in Red Rock Canyon or visiting Hoover Dam are more appealing. In winter, temperatures can dip lower than most expect (even to freezing overnight), skies can be overcast, and there’s even a bit of precipitation (flash flooding does happen in January). Of course, this cooler weather rarely affects the majority of activities available but does provide added incentive to get outside and explore.

Vegas tends to be much calmer and more manageable on weekdays, when prices for rooms, spa services, entertainment, and even meals can drop, often significantly.

It’s also the place to see an Eiffel Tower and Sphinx without hopping on a plane. Beyond the glitz and the neon lights, there is plenty of nature to explore. There’s the Lake Mead Recreation Area, the Hoover Dam, and even the Grand Canyon is accessible via a fairly short helicopter ride. Whatever it is that brings you to the Sin City, we have some tips to help you plan and enjoy the smoothest possible trip.

Getting to and around the city of Las Vegas

When you arrive at McCarran International Airport, you’ll think the strip is so close you could walk there. This isn’t recommended and you’ll soon learn everything in Vegas seems quite close. The easiest and quickest option is to get a taxi straight from the airport – it shouldn’t take longer than thrity minutes – maybe less depending on where your hotel is and what the traffic is like.

You can also arrange for a limo to collect you if you want to ride in style, or at the other end of the spectrum you can take the shuttle bus. This might be the cheapest option but it makes many stops, so if you’d rather just get to your hotel and relax, take a taxi. You can also take a bus straight to the strip or rent a car, however unless you are planning to explore the outer areas of Las Vegas, a car could be more of a hindrance to your trip.

Once you’ve settled into your hotel and are ready to explore, it’s easiest to get around Vegas from the 4-mile-long Las Vegas Strip. Walking is a great way to get around Vegas, but it may not be the fastest. A monorail will take you from one end of the Vegas Strip to the other, and it runs all week long. Las Vegas’ public bus system also has buses running all day and night, and there are also trolleys you can take to get around too. Of course, you can always catch a taxi in front of any major hotel.

  • Malls and shopping centers with indoor rainstorms, animatronic gods, light shows and even a Grand Canal (in the  Venetian ) offer almost as much entertainment as the hotels.
  • Las Vegas hotels are always advertising deals for guests. Before booking your Las Vegas flights, check with specific hotels to see what rates and promotions they have during the time of your travel. In many cases, booking Las Vegas flights and hotels together is cheaper and more economical.
  • Don’t miss out on star-infused dining by top chefs. When booking Las Vegas flights and accommodations it’s possible for travelers to also receive vouchers to hotel casinos and restaurants.
