Fietsend door het oudste cultuurlandschap van Nederland langs sfeervolle middeleeuwse kerkjes en monumentale boerenschuren laat je je verrassen door toonaangevende jazz van wereldklasse. Dat is de ZomerJazzFietsTour!

Voor de 36ste ZJFT prolongeren we de vaste routes van vorig jaar – de corona-editie met vier groepen. Vorig jaar hoorden we tevreden geluiden over de nieuwe opzet. Het overzicht geeft de jazzfietser rust in de kop en je bent verzekerd van een zitplaats. Wel moet je op sommige punten op de route kiezen tussen twee lekkernijen. Als bij een menukaart. De nieuwe opzet biedt je  ook de mogelijkheid om een thematisch in elkaar gezette middag mee te maken, zoals in route 3 waarin je drie vocalisten op rij kan ondergaan: Sanem Kalfa, Helene Richter (Farbenfroh) en Elise Caron. Of zoals in route 4, de Han Bennink80 route met de jubilaris himself en musici die een connectie hebben met het ICP Orchestra. Er zijn altijd eigenzinnige jazzfietsers, daarom introduceren we dit jaar een Freejazz route, waar je naar eigen voorkeur vier sets kan samenstellen, zonder je aan een opgestelde route te houden. Let wel op de fietsafstanden. En je zult bij het boeken merken dat het aantal plaatsen zeker niet onbeperkt is.

Uit het buitenland worden dit jaar verwacht: Wayne Horvitz/Sara Schoenbeck (uit Seattle en New York). De New Yorkse trombonist Steve Swell (bij Jan Klare 3000) en eveneens  New Yorker, drummer Jim Black (tegenwoordig uit Berlijn) bij het internationale kwartet van Canadees Miles Perkin die ook stertrompettist Tom Arthurs uit London meeneemt. Er komen ook interessante Fransen naar de ZJFT. De uitzonderlijke pianist Benoît Delbecq uit Parijs speelt in het Miles Perkin Quartet . Met klarinettist Louis Sclavis en cellist Vincent Courtois hebben we een Frans superduo naar Groningen gehaald. Het duo opent de vrijdagse Proloog in Simplon. Een dag later ontmoeten ze in Garnwerd basklarinettist Fie Schouten en pianist Guus Janssen . En we hebben de Franse slagwerker Edward Perraud met vocaliste Elise Caron uitgenodigd voor een bijzonder concert in Ezinge.

Uit Lissabon komt het enerverende strijktrio The Selva . Uit Duitsland: Jan Klare 3000 en Carl-Ludwig Hübsch met zijn Longrun Development of the Universe . De Flat Earth Society vertegenwoordigt België, net als trompettist Bart Maris (normaliter bij FES, nu bij 3000) en Don Kapot (uit Brussel). Naast de furieuze bigband uit Gent kunnen we in route 1 ook het veelkoppige Nationaal Jeugd Jazz Orkest in werking zien.

De overige 11 formaties die deelnemen aan ZJFT 2022 hebben Nederlandse connecties. Het NNT/Nite project van Bab Ad-daar mag hierbij niet onvermeld blijven. Net als de onverwachte muzikale wendingen van het septet van Jeroen Kimman Orquesta Del Tiempo Perdido . Of de performance van Ada Rave en Luc Ex met zijn zeven meter lange Object Sonore bij de sluizen van Schaphalsterzijl.

Inderdaad, te veel om op te noemen. We blijven het enige festival voor nieuwe jazz en impro waar je er zeker van bent dat je meer dan de helft mist en zelf moet fietsen ook. Zonder de inzet van vele vrijwilligers is een ZJFT onmogelijk. Waarvoor veel hulde en dank.

Dave Douglas was de grote afsluiter

De Zomerjazzfietstour 2023 tijdens het laatste augustusweekeinde was in alle opzichten weer een zinderend evenement. Vooraf een selectie maken uit 51 concerten op 26 verspreide speelplekken en die passend binnen een gegeven tijdsbestek met elkaar verbinden via slingerende fietspaden is al spannend. Dat die locaties, vooral bestaande uit de mooiste en fraaiste historische boerderijen en kerken rondom het Reitdiepdal, heel uiteenlopende publiekscapaciteit hebben kan ook betekenen dat je er niet meer in kan. De monumentale Enne Jans Heerd in Maarhuizen biedt bijvoorbeeld plaats aan maar liefst 700 personen terwijl de in de 13e eeuw op een wierde gebouwde romaanse zaalkerk in Ezinge 70 zitplaatsen heeft. Dat zijn aanzienlijke verschillen. Het is een hersenbreker waar de organisatie creatief mee weet om te gaan. Onbekendere muzikanten met onverwachte combinaties op de kleinste concertplekken kan daarbij een handig stuurmiddel zijn, verklapte programmeur Marcel Roelofs . Daar kunnen echter ook de mooie verrassingen schuilen. Wie het geluk heeft ook de proloog op de vrijdagavond bij te kunnen wonen kan alvast twee bandjes op zaterdag schrappen. Daar hoef je dàn niet meer naar toe!

PROLOOG IN 2 BEDRIJVEN De 37e editie van de ZJFT opende volgens traditie met niet-traditionele muziek tijdens de proloog in Groningen Stad. Simplon bood het toneel voor een tweeluik met als thema ‘Ein Abend aus Berlin’ . Het Berlijnse trio met de grote naam Insomnia Brass Band juist terug van een jazzfestival in IJsland en eerder dit jaar in Bremen uitgeroepen tot Band des Jahres en daarmee winnaar van de Deutsche Jazzpreis 2023 mocht de avond prikkelend en kleurrijk opwarmen.

De eminente drummer Christian Marien zat stevig ingekneld tussen sterke vrouwen Almut Schlichting op baritonsaxofoon en Anke Lucks op trombone. Samen vormen zij een tot de essentie teruggebrachte krachtdadige brassband. Collectief jongleerde het frisfruitige drietal energiek op het podium met melodie en ritme in een wisselend landschap van New Orleans tradities, vrije jazz en funky punkrock. De kop van de zevenendertigste tour was er af.

Almut Schlichting

ROEP Voor een concert van de vier heren van het roemruchte Ruf der Heimat kon het aandachtige publiek deze avond de fiets gewoon laten staan. Na een snel changement op het podium konden de toehoorders gewoon op hun stoel blijven zitten om te genieten van een enerverend impro-spel opgediend vanaf een blanco Berlijnse menukaart. De roep van deze vier topimprovisatoren werd gehoord. De muziek van deze (multi-)instrumentalisten smolt samen tot een uniek en hecht groepsgeluid.

Ruf der Heimat

Al meer dan dertig jaar vormen aanvoerder Thomas Borgmann (saxofoons en meer) en slagwerker Will Kellers de peilers van de instant composing Ruf . De zittende bezoekers van het uitverkochte Simplon konden vrijdagavond genieten van het kwieke maar potige geluid van dit Duitse viertal. Wie dit miste, kon zaterdag in het kerkje van het historische Niehove terecht. Dat bood tijdens de tour op zaterdag plaats aan twee keer 175 bezoekers voor twee nieuwe concerten.

AD SANCTUM ADUARDUM Een populair startpunt van de route – met een ruime capaciteit van 250 bezoekers – bevindt zich in Aduard . Vanaf de 11e eeuw vestigden zich op deze plek Cisterciënzers waar zij het klooster Ad Sanctum Bernardum opbouwden. Nu verzamelden zich een fors aantal leden van de virtuele hedendaagse jazzkerk bij de tot kerk omgebouwde ziekenzaal van de vroegere Sint Bernardusabdij . De buienradar toonde snel aangroeiende buienfrontjes met rode kernen die het doorzettingsvermogen van de fietsers op de proef stelde en inventiviteit in kledingkeuze noodzakelijk maakte.

Velen kwamen bij het eerste concert druipend van de zojuist getrotseerde regen de kerk binnen. Trompettist Tom Arthurs en harpiste Giovanna Pessi beloonden de jazzdrenkelingen met hun verfijnde samenspel. De twee hadden elkaar in Zwitserland (hij vanuit Bern en zij vanuit Bazel) muzikaal besnuffeld tijdens de Corona-tijd en er was een spannend gezamenlijk oeuvre ontstaan. De meditatieve trompetklanken en het bezwerende snarenspel van de harp zweefden door de grote en volledig gevulde kerk. Het rommelende onweer op de achtergrond leverde nog een extra laagje op. Soms was de muziek zo fluisterzacht dat de bezoekers op de achterste rijen zelfs moeite moesten doen om de klanken goed te horen. Sereen, zacht, gevoelig en unplugged werd een amalgaam van barokke klassiek en contemporaine jazz uitgestrooid over de dankbare genieters in de kerk.

BOTSAUTO’S Direct na het eerste concert in Aduard botsten de bezoekers van het eerste concert en het tweede concert letterlijk met elkaar voor de deur van de kerk. De ene groep weerde zich om weg te komen terwijl de tweede groep gretig naar binnen wilde. De tour is niet gemaakt voor automobilisten en daar ook niet geschikt voor. Er klotsten wat vierwielers op elkaar, maar voor zover bekend bleef het bij lichte blikschade. En de file haalde het landelijke nieuws niet. De auto’s stonden even vast en de fietsers namen ruim baan, want die waren in de meerderheid.

DON’T TAKE LIFE TO SERIOUS Speciaal voor die fietsers was ook de Bicycle Repair Man stand by. Die had deze dag behoorlijk wat kilometers met de auto moeten maken om gestrande fietsers met pech bij te staan. Onder het motto ‘Don’t take life to serious’ reed hij van oost naar west en van zuid naar noord. Hij werd opgeroepen voor een tweetal lekke achterbanden, waarvan één bij een fiets met cardanas de lastigste was. Verder iemand met een kapotte trapper, iets met versnellingen en er werd nog een pleisterdoosje uitgereikt.

SNOWAPPLE Het internationale kunstenaarscollectief Snowapple maakt kunst met interdisciplinaire projecten zonder vastomlijnde regels. Voor ZJFT stelde Una Bergin een muziekgroep samen met vooral muzikanten die in de band van haar vader (overleden in 2012) meespeelden; Sean Bergin’s MOB . Het nieuwe acht-persoons ensemble speelde tussen de strobalen in de schuur van de familie Huizinga een stukje buiten Den Ham . Met sterke vocalen van Una Bergin , Laurien Schreuder en Felicity Provan , een prachtige blazerssectie van tenorsaxofonist Tobias Delius , trombonist Joost Buis en andermaal Felicity Provan op kornet plus ritmesectie van Ernst Glerum , Alan Purves en gitarist Omar Medina werd een set met aanstekelijke muziek gepresenteerd. Melodieën met een Zuidafrikaanse of Caribische inslag werden ten gehore gebracht. Avant-garde, folk, poppy, prachtige improvisaties, een vleugje opera en theater werden eigenzinnig samengebracht. Samen met een en drankje en een hapje (de gehaktballen zijn fameus) hadden de bezoekers weer voldoende energie om verder te fietsen.

ROUTEPLANNER Het systeem van fietsen volgens routes die al dan niet vooraf zijn vastgesteld kende de laatste jaren wat varianten. Tijdens de corona-tijd waren er even verplichte routes, maar dat was nu weer geheel vrijgelaten. ‘Verplicht’ past toch niet zo goed bij de zjft-fietsers. Dit jaar waren door de organisatie vijf mogelijke routes bedacht, maar je kon ook gewoon je eigen ding doen. Om dat makkelijker te doen was er een handig hulpmiddel bedacht, waarmee je een relaxte keus kon maken. In ons schema konden we nu naar de kerk van Oostum fietsen en de tweede set van Turkish Pumpkin . Dat is 4,7 km fietsen met een gemiddelde fietstijd van 17 minuten. Automobilisten en e-bikers kunnen daar misschien wat korter overdoen. Dat is natuurlijk niet vals spelen. Het is pas valsspelen wanneer alle eerste rijen bij concerten door autorijders en elektrieke fietsers bezet worden en de echte fietsers achter moeten aanschuiven (of niet meer binnen kunnen).

POMPOENSOEP Het kerkje van Oostum is rijk van soberheid. Het is schilderachtig aan de buitenkant, gebouwd vanaf de 13 e eeuw midden in het landschap. De kerk staat op een wierd als een eiland in de groene zee op nog geen 200 meter van het Reitdiep (destijds met getijden). Aan de binnenkant van de kerk vallen de restanten van een wandschildering op. Het meest in het oog springt de abstracte schildering achter de preekstoel, die met de ‘hand van God’ lijkt te zijn aangebracht. Maar het zou even goed een onbedoelde vlek kunnen zijn van een pan pompoensoep die er tegen aan is gekledderd. Het is het decor voor Turkish Pumpkin , hier geprogrammeerd met de hand van ….. programmeur Marcel Roelofs .

In 2020 toen we de Zomer Jazz Iets Tour hadden i.p.v. Fiets Tour stonden ze er ook (met een andere drummer), maar liepen we ze juist mis. Toen werd de volledige set met wat vertraging gestreamd. Nu is er slechts plaats voor ca. 80 bezoekers. De in Istanboel geboren bandleider Esat Ekincioglu kennen we misschien ook van het AVA Trio en Kuhn Fu . Pumpkin bracht een stevige en goed gevulde groovy soep met psychedelische kruiden en afro-anatolische ingrediënten. Een behoorlijk stevig geluid met improvisaties die soms voelen als extatische liederen en oproepen tot trance. Niet zelden is begrafenis- of trouwmuziek de inspiratiebron.

OP RETOUR We hadden onze route in principe slim aangepakt. We zijn zo ver mogelijk weg ( Aduard ) de tour begonnen (alleen jammer van die regenbui) om vervolgens langzaam terug te gaan naar het startpunt in Garnwerd . Daar slapen we en kunnen we als we nog zin hebben ook de laatste festiviteiten in de tent (die er weer staat) meemaken. Van Oostum fietsten we nu naar de kerk van Feerwerd . En het weer werd steeds beter! Wij zijn dus op ons retour.

De Britse muzikanten Trevor Watts (84) en Veryan Weston (73) zijn dat, ondanks hun gevorderde leeftijd zeker niet. Ze vormen meer dan 20 jaar een duo en weten precies wat ze van elkaar kunnen verwachten. Ze speelden volledig vrij en onversterkt. Watts begon met alt- en stapte later over op sopraansaxofoon. Fit ogend, met een krachtig geluid en circulaire ademhalingstechnieken toepassend laat hij zijn fantasie de vrije loop. Weston beantwoordde het saxofoonspel en vice versa. De heren spraken niet met elkaar en keken elkaar niet aan. Hun dialoog bestond uit samen muziek maken en samen naar hun muziek luisteren. Soms hoeft het niet meer te zijn om een prachtig concert bij te kunnen wonen. En om met Marcel Roelofs te spreken. Hij zoekt voor de zjft geen muzikanten die braaf een CD naspelen. “Wat heeft dat voor zin, dan kan je net zo goed een CD draaien. Het moet niet recht zijn. Scheef is mooi. Verrassend. Luistermuziek waar spanning in zit. Opletmuziek, noem ik het.”

Dave Douglas had van collega’s alleen goede dingen gehoord over de ZJFT. Nu maakte hij zijn debuut in het kerkje van Garnwerd. Het bleek een geliefd concert, want het was twee keer helemaal vol!

DUTCH MOUNTAINS Strikt genomen gold dat niet helemaal voor Dave Douglas die zijn suite Mountain Passages in de kerk in Garnwerd uitvoerde. Uitgeschreven muziek dus, met beperkte vrijheid. Maar dat bleek geen domper op de vreugde. Daags ervoor had hij de muziek met zijn ensemble hoog in de Dolomieten in Trentino opgevoerd. Daar kreeg hij reeds in 2003 de compositie-opdracht voor dit stuk. Het stuk heeft dus een lange geschiedenis. Het werd opgedragen aan zijn vader die een live-uitvoering nooit heeft mogen beleven. Het album werd in 2005 uitgebracht op zijn eigen Greenleaf Music label. Destijds zijn 23 e album. Het zijn composities gebaseerd op de verhalen over de bergcultuur.

Vandaag speelde hij in een land dat grotendeels onder de zeespiegel ligt. Douglas maakte zelfs zijn debuut bij de ZJFT. Hij had over het Groningse festival alleen goede dingen gehoord en hij toonde zich dolblij om hier te mogen spelen.

Het vijftal speelde verhalende jazzwereldmuziek die geestdriftig en feestelijk, maar zeker ook regelmatig plechtig en devoot klonk. Ook in de kerk van Garnwerd waren veel passages met een hoge emotionele lading die met ingehouden adem werden beluisterd. De aangevoerde geluidsinstallatie bleef ongebruikt en de musici hadden geen enkele moeite om de ruimte akoestisch te vullen. Het kerkje paste wonderbaarlijk als een handschoen om de vijf excellent musicerende toonkunstenaars.

TENT Om kwart voor negen viel een daverend slotapplaus in de kerk van Garnwerd . Voor wie nog niet naar huis wou stond er een paar honderd meter verderop de ZJFT-tent. Daar konden de geoormerkte bezoekers en vrijwilligers hun belevenissen delen en zich ook laven aan drank en op de heuse eet-boulevard de inwendige mens versterken. Naked Ears met de Amerikaanse zanger/trombonist Joseph Bowie als gast zorgde voor gepaste voorgrondmuziek. De muzikale rupjes-nooit-genoeg konden daar tot elf uur op los gaan.

Terugkijkend op een prachtige 37 e editie van de Zomer Jazz Fiets Tour hielden wij het voor gezien en gehoord!

As lover of unexplored space , border crossing sounds, Giuseppe focuses his research on the baritone saxophone, constantly expanding a personal vocabulary that goes through his background in contemporary classical music , jazz improvisation and his interest for non-western music.

Giuseppe (1987) was born in Barletta, a very old town on the Adriatic coast of Puglia, Italy.

Recently Giuseppe has been awarded as “Music Revelation 2018” in the International Jazz critic pool “El Intruso” by All About Jazz Journalist Karl Ackermann.

He began studying classical saxophone at the “N. Piccinni” Conservatory in Bari, where he graduated in 2009. In 2011 he obtained “Master on Saxophone” in classical contemporary music, as soloist at the “N.Rota” Conservatory in Monopoli. In 2012 he moved in Holland to study jazz and composition, at the Prins Claus Conservatory in Groningen among others with Michael Moore and Kurt Weiss where he graduated Cum Laude in 2015.

In 2015 he recorded a solo piece for the dutch dancer and choreographer Cora Bos-Kroese titled “Two ways towards”, that was performed at the New York University (NYC).

He recently received the BUMA Award Music in Motion 2022, for best film composition in short film.

He can be seen among his current projects as Solo, Falga, AVA Trio, Aterraterr, Michael Moore Bigtet, All Ellington, Raoul van Der Weide XPE.

He has been giving music workshops in several spaces and institutions in Europe and abroad together with the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, Prins Claus Conservatorium (The Netherlands), Arkestra Lab foundation (Italy), Marmara University of Arts (Turkey), New York University (NYC).

He has worked with creative artists covering various fields of the national and international art including: Michael Moore, Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, Mariem Hassan, Vince Mendoza,Han Bennink, NDR Big Band, João Bosco, Kiko Freitas, Robin Eubanks, Paolo Fresu, Tullio De Piscopo, Taylor Ho Bynum, Steve Potts,Roberto Ottaviano,Ralph Alessi,Gianni Lenoci, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Felice Mezzina,Lothar Sthal, Jens Pollheide, Irene Aebi Lacy, Tiziano Tononi, Daniele Cavallanti, Carlo Actis Dato, Benjamin Herman, Jim Black.

“As one of the most exciting fresh voices in the Dutch jazz and impro scene” , Italian born, Amsterdam based musician and composer Giuseppe Doronzo, focuses his solo research on the baritone sax. His solo work, gives you a polyphonic vision from a monodic instrument. The performance consists of pieces and improvisations that combine contemporary classical music, jazz improvisation and non-western music traditions. He gets inspired by urban and natural environments, electronic sounds and spaces, that all converge into an introspective experience of the baritone sax sounds. He experiments with multiphonics, amalgams of different sound layers, that open up to a microtonal, polyphonic and polyrhythmic music field. Last year with his solo project, Doronzo has been nominated Music Revelation and Best Debut Album 2018 by All About Jazz on the international jazz critic pool “El Intruso”. Furthermore, he had the possibility to present his debut solo album “GOYA” at various venues and festivals in Europe including Sant’ Anna Arresi Jazz Festival, Bimhuis, and Gaudeamus Muziekweek Festival. Russian film director Roman Ermolaev made a 40’ experimental film based on Doronzo’ s baritone sax solo album “GOYA” , gaining a relevant attention from Film Festivals and Contemporary Art Museums in Europe. His first solo album “ GOYA ” was released in August 2018 on his record label, Tora Records .

Aterraterr is a meeting between two friends coming from the same land, Puglia (south of Italy), living at two extremes of Europe, the Netherlands and south of Italy. Through their music they narrate past and present tales, perhaps totally abstract and utopian. Their language is inspired by the nature of their instruments, wind and percussive. The soundscapes are influenced by the geographical and rural areas of Puglia, pastoral minimalism and traces of ancient mediterranean rituals.

Formed just over a year ago, AVA had an exciting first year with some 40 concerts in the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy, receiving a phenomenal response from all types of audience. AVA’s debut album, Music From an Imaginary Land is the grand result of the past year’s work. They invite you on an ethnomusical expedition to the imaginary land and beyond. FALGA was born in October 2013 in Groningen, NL. Its members met and started first playing improvised music in duo or trio, in various combinations; subsequently they decided to blend their strong spiritual connections into a quintet. The crusade of the ensemble is compelling a musical language which is the synthesis of the personal background of each member, the tradition of jazz music which is innovation, and last but not least the cathartic power of the moment. Following to mantra of “now”, the band has been working with perseverance on original music; every composition is a different and always intimate story, but at the same time it’s nothing more than a piece of clay ready to be shaped into something radically different, according to the free will of any/every member. Therefore, what the audience should be ready to attend to is a process of constant metamorphosis and creative flow, a research for the less traveled path and the enjoyment of a friendship facing endless unresolved questions.

Usadba Jazz Festival (June 22-23)

This big international open-air jazz festival in Russia takes place at Kolomenskoye estate and combines various styles of funk, soul, hip-hop, rock and blues music. Usadba jazz is a series of events which can be found not only in Moscow but also in Saint Petersburg, Sochi and Dobrograd. The festival has a laid back vibe, so it’s a nice place for those who don’t like disturbing sounds. The festival is well equipped with food courts, kid areas and other family friendly entertainments. There will be a special programme for kids, so parents can have some fun too. Apart from music the will be a literature stage where anybody could participate in reading their or other people’s poems. This year headliners will be Russian rock band SPLIN, Ivan Dorn and Black Eyed Peas. If you are not that much into loud music Usadba Jazz will definitely make your ears relax.

Marcel Roelofs al zo’n dertig jaar programmeur voor de ZomerJazzFietsTour

“Het moet niet recht zijn. Scheef is mooi”

Hoe bepaal je als ervaren programmeur van de Zomer Jazz Fiets Tour welke muzikanten je naar het Reidiepgebied haalt? Dat blijkt nog best ingewikkeld. Programmeur Marcel Roelofs (65) gunt ons een blik achter de schermen. En geeft drie tips van bands die je moet beleven op 25 en 26 augustus.

Warme zomerklanken klinken in de hoekwoning in de Oosterpoortwijk in Stad. De muziek komt niet van een van de ontelbare CD’s, DVD’s en elpees die de woonkamer beheersen. Marcel: “Dat is het mooie van internetradio, je kan stations over de hele wereld beluisteren. Dit is een van mijn favorieten, WFMU in New Jersey. Ze draaien van alles door elkaar, niet alleen jazz.”

En dan heeft Roelofs ook nog eens een PC vol met jazz. En je hebt natuurlijk de online muziekdiensten, waar ook bijna alles op te vinden is. Kan je ook teveel jazz hebben? “Nee”, lacht Marcel. “Dat denk ik niet.”

Marcel heeft zijn onmetelijke liefde voor muziek meegekregen van zijn ouders, die een jazzcollectie hadden. Ze hadden een Readers Digest lpbox, met het nummer Sing Sing Sing van Benny Goodman. Grijsgedraaid. Toen was Marcel zeven jaar.

"SING, SING, SING" BY BENNY GOODMAN

Er is in Groningen misschien iemand te vinden die net zo veel weet van jazz en er net zo veel van houdt als Marcel. Maar die kans is niet heel groot. De jazz heeft hem zelfs naar zijn huidige woonplaats geduwd. Hij is geboren in Nijmegen, maar ging in Groningen wonen nadat hij hier een aantal keren het toenmalige festival Jazzmarathon had bezocht. Marcel wilde dichter op het jazz-vuur zitten. Het bleek een gelukkig huwelijk.

Hij raakte al snel betrokken bij het Grand Theatre in de Stad, eerst als vrijwilliger, later als programmeur. Marcel werkte daar zo’n 35 jaar, organiseerde allerlei jazz-evenementen en werd begin jaren negentig programmeur bij de ZomerJazzFietsTour.

Marcel is net terug uit Berlijn, waar hij een aantal concerten heeft bezocht. Live-optredens, daar haalt hij zijn inspiratie vandaan. Want waar let hij nou op als hij een band wil boeken? De belangrijkste criteria op een rijtje:

• Er moet iets gebeuren op het podium. Marcel is niet zo’n fan van bands die hun CD naspelen. Improvisatie en beleving, daar gaat het om.
• De akoestiek moet kloppen. De muzikanten spelen soms in kleine kerkjes, waar nog geen honderd mensen in passen. Dat heeft gevolgen voor de muziek die er gespeeld kan worden. Marcel heeft soms bij het horen van een band al de locatie in gedachten waar ze gaan spelen.
• De ‘familie’, zoals Marcel ze noemt. Oftewel: de eigenaren of uitbaters van een locatie. Die hebben zo hun voorkeuren. De een wil lekkere ‘rotherrie’, de ander feestmuziek. En weer een ander wil juist iets heel kleins en intiems. Marcel luistert met de oren van de ‘familie’ en stemt daar de bands op af.

Los van alles heeft Marcel een voorkeur voor bands die wat minder bekend zijn. Hij bekijkt met name wat ze live doen, daarom wil hij ze ook live zien. Er moet iets gebeuren op het podium. Geen muzikanten die keurig een CD naspelen. “Wat heeft dat voor zin, dan kan je net zo goed een CD draaien. Het moet niet recht zijn. Scheef is mooi. Verrassend. Luistermuziek waar spanning in zit. Opletmuziek, noem ik het.”

Marcel heeft de vrije hand in de muzikanten die hij kiest. Dat kan ook niet anders, vindt hij. “Het is het als het maken van een schilderij, dat doe je ook niet met een hele groep.”

Het succes van de Zomer Jazz Fiets Tour kan hij wel verklaren. “Het gaat niet alleen om de muziek. Ook al vind je een band tegenvallen, dan nog is het een geweldig dagje uit. Je fietst door een prachtig landschap, met al die mooie kerkjes en huisjes en allemaal vriendelijke mensen. Het is niet kneuterig. Het is naturel. Het is ook goed dat het maar één dag is. Dan blijft het vers en wordt het niet te massaal.” “Ik heb bijzondere dingen meegemaakt. In de beginjaren van de ZomerJazzFietsTour was het niet gebruikelijk dat de bands uitbetaalde per bank. Het moest contant. Maar soms waren muzikanten al vertrokken voordat we ze hadden betaald. Wij er achteraan met een tas vol geld. Sta je dan in de berm middenin een weiland. Mooi tafereel.”

En naar welke bands gaat hij zelf kijken deze keer? Hier komen ze dan: de drie tips van Marcel, in willekeurige volgorde:

• Cristian Marien Quartet, met Tobias Delius op tenorsax/klarinet
• Dave Douglas Mountain Passages, met Dave Douglas op trompet
• Naked Ears, featuring Joseph Bowie van Defunkt, vocals en trombone

Jazz fans, artists flock to Moscow

For one week each February, Moscow becomes the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

Fifteen thousand students from as far away as Massachusetts and Alaska will compete in group and solo competitions in the annual festival, now in its 38th year. Filling hotels from Spokane to Clarkston, others staying with host families or on gym floors, those students and other visitors bring more than $5 million to area businesses, according to program adviser Bill Cole.

And although it would be nice to think that the masses are flocking to Moscow for the local cuisine, visiting jazz artists are the obvious attraction. Many musicians from around the world travel to Moscow each year to mingle with students, teach clinics and perform at evening concerts in the University of Idaho Kibbie Dome.

The concerts, which start at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and 8 p.m. Feb. 25 and 26, feature 32 artists and groups. For those accustomed to the festival, most of the performers should sound familiar; all but five are festival veterans and 21 performed last year.

The house band for the third year in a row features drummer Jeff Hamilton, guitarist Russell Malone, pianist Benny Green and bassist John Clayton. The quartet is the most visible group of performers, backing guest artists each night. Although the group is created just for the festival, the players frequently work together in bands and on albums.

Wednesday, 7:30 p.m.

Freddy Cole, brother of the late Nat King Cole, who for years tried not to be associated with his famous brother and niece Natalie is feeling more comfortable with family history. He recently has been performing songs recorded by his brother. Expect him to do the same when he returns to the festival.

Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

Returning for his second festival appearance is guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli, supporting his latest Telarc release, “Bossa Nova.” Pizzarelli, known as much for his showmanship as his music, first appeared at the festival in 2002, filling in when Lou Rawls canceled at the last minute.

Pizzarelli is joined by his father, Bucky, who has performed in the festival’s house band and was a first-call session guitarist in the ‘60s, performing with artists including Benny Goodman, Zoot Sims and Stephane Grappelli. The father and son perform together often with the John Pizzarelli Trio, which includes John’s brother Martin on bass. The duo will be backed by the house band at their jazz fest appearance.

Feb. 25, 8 p.m.

Lou Rawls, who announced onstage during the 2003 festival that he would become a bigger part of the festival, skipped last year. Expect Rawls to bring his Vegas-style “Wind Beneath My Wings” and bright jackets back to the festival.

Jane Monheit also will make her annual stop on the Palouse for a Feb. 25 set. Her set last year was a bit more sensual than the festival is used to, though reviews of her recent performances indicate that she has shed most of the uncomfortable flirtation.

Feb. 26, 8 p.m.

The Roy Hargrove Quartet consistently puts on one of the finest sets of the festival and hardly anyone sees it. The quartet usually closes an earlier night of the festival and by the time they take the stage, most of the younger attendees have exited. With the Lionel Hampton New York Big Band headlining Saturday, crowds may get a rare glimpse of this festival regular.

For several years, Lionel Hampton, who died in 2002, traditionally made his only festival appearance on Saturday nights with his band. With Hampton gone, The Lionel Hampton New York Big Band still performs but is not the same. The band has played several gigs in the past year with disco diva Chaka Khan. It is unknown if the band will find room for “Tell Me Something Good” between favorites “Flying Home” and “Hamp’s Boogie-Woogie.”
