Don't Take Our Word For It, Discover Seamless Travel Planning with Land & Sea Travel

land and sea travel hawaii

Welcome to Land and Sea Travel, where your dream vacations are expertly crafted with precision and care. Don't let the complexities of travel planning consume your valuable time and energy. Hear it straight from our satisfied clients:

So, I learned painfully, so you don't have to.

Lean in... Eileen booked a complex trip for us to Alaska last year. There were a couple of issues that Eileen worked out. She made it look so easy. This year, I decided to take the lead and book a trip to Yellowstone and Jackson Hole. Well, the travel world has changed big time post-Covid, and trips I used to orchestrate are now highly likely to experience issues and changes. So far, I've probably put in 8 hrs in rectifying stuff with online travel agencies and airline carriers… Oh, and one of our travelers is ill and cannot go, so now I am navigating the refund process for the insurance I purchased… and at this point seems fruitless. My point? Use Eileen at Land and Sea Travel. She lives and breathes this stuff.

You have better things you could do with your time.

Day 1 : Fly to Honolulu

A traditional lei greeting welcomes us to Oahu before we check in to our hotel. Nestled along the white sands of Waikiki Beach, enjoy views of Diamond Head Crater and beautiful rooms with private lanais.

Day 2 : Pearl Harbor

Start the day with a delicious breakfast at our hotel. Then, journey to the most moving site on Oahu, Pearl Harbor National Memorial. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the Navy’s Pacific Fleet, catapulting the U.S. into World War II. We stop by the visitor center to view the exhibits that recall that pivotal day and embark on a Navy launch to the USS Arizona Memorial, which spans the sunken battleship. After a Holiday Vacations Welcome Lunch, we tour the Honolulu area, viewing the volcanic shaped Hawaiian State Capitol building and Iolani Palace, the only palace in the U.S. once inhabited by a reigning monarch. We then visit the Punchbowl, an extinct volcano and home of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. *Tickets to the USS Arizona Memorial are subject to availability through National Park Service and confirmed the day prior.

Day 3 : Pride of America

After a relaxing morning we transfer to the only U.S.-flagged cruise ship, Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America , to begin our seven-night cruise. Enjoy all the benefits of NCL’s Freestyle Cruising, where you set your own schedule with a variety of activities and dining options. Delight in spectacular live entertainment and the ship’s popular deck parties. The onboard Native ambassadors teach us about their culture, providing an authentic Hawaiian experience.

Day 4 : Maui

Our first port of call is Kahului, Maui. We have ample time to explore the Valley Isle, named for its long blankets of green set against soaring mountains. The second largest island in Hawaii, it's surrounded by gorgeous beaches and frequented throughout the winter months by calving humpback whales.

Day 5 : The Valley Isle

Wake up for a second day on Maui today and choose from NCL’s excursions or relax onboard and enjoy the variety of entertainment and dining options. Catch a show at an onboard venue with live music in casual lounges or join a DJ dance party at sea!

Day 6 : Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Sail into Hilo on the Big Island this morning, gateway to the fascinating world of active volcanoes. We'll visit Rainbow Falls, famous for producing colorful spectrums of light with water cascading from 80 feet high. Then, we stop for a delicious included lunch just outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. After lunch, with our own private driver-guide, we explore volcanic craters, steam vents, and eerie lava formations. The park displays the monumental results of 70 million years of volcanic activity and sheds light on the creation of the Hawaiian Islands. Back on board our ship, we cruise around the Big Island to Kona.

Day 7 : The Big Island

Visit the leeward (west) side of the Big Island today, anchoring off the coast and taking tenders into the heart of Kailua-Kona. Choose from a variety of activities for leisure time such as hiking the rare black sand beach, embarking on a glass-bottom reef tour, or learning why this area is famous for its coffee. You may also enjoy an optional tour of Kona to see St. Benedict’s renowned painted church, noted for its colorful murals that depict biblical scenes, and Old Hawaii at Pu’uhonua O Honauau National Historical Park, a place of refuge. Within this previously political and religious sanctuary for breakers of sacred law, discover a temple that once housed the bones of deceased chiefs with wooden images of the gods that protect it.

Day 8 : Evening Luau

We dock in Nawiliwili, Kauai this morning. Kauai is known as The Garden Isle, a lush paradise of rainforest, tropical flowers, magnificent canyons, and beaches. Norwegian Cruise Line provides many exciting options to explore this beautiful island for the day. Tonight, we are immersed in the flavor, culture, and sounds of Polynesia with an included excursion to Luau Kalamaku at Kilohana Plantation.

Day 9 : The Garden Isle

Discover more of Kauai today with a full day at leisure to spend as you please. This is a great time for an optional Mokihana Helicopter adventure for bird’s-eye views of colorful Waimea Canyon and the “Valley of the Lost Tribe,” shrouded in mystery. We board our ship this evening and begin cruising back to the beautiful island of Oahu.

Day 10 : Oahu’s North Shore

We disembark our ship this morning in Honolulu. Then, we meet our driver-guide for a private tour of Oahu’s North Shore, a mecca for surfers as well as those seeking blue waters and a taste of Old Hawaii. Later, we board our overnight flight to the mainland.

Day 11 : Arrive Home

A Hui Hou (until we meet again).

Hawaii By Land and Sea - Oahu

March 5th, 2018, hawaii by land and sea with tours of distinction - oahu.

“Hawaii is not a state of mind, but a state of grace” Paul Theroux.

Cruise Details

Cosmopolitan honolulu, polynesian cultural center.

This center is one of Hawaii’s #1 attractions. It is the home of the famous Alii Luau and the world’s largest Polynesian night show, ”Ha: Breath of Life.” ”Ha” means breath in Hawaiian and this show is universally captivating in its appeal. It features over 100 Polynesian performers and is a symbolic tale of love and family, tragedy and triumph told in Polynesian dance, music, fire knives and many amazing special effects.

The center celebrates the diverse cultures of Polynesia with canoe rides, demonstrations, authentic food, and seven recreated villages situated on 42 beautiful acres of large lagoons, waterfalls, and lush tropical flora; there is even an “erupting” volcano!  Every day at 2:30 p.m. a beautiful pageant takes place on the water as dancers representing the islands of  Fiji, Hawaii, the Marquesas, New Zealand, Samoa, Tahiti, and Tonga put on a show of their native dances and music. Best viewing areas are along the shoreline of the lagoon.

Pearl Harbor and U.S.S. Arizona Memorial

Making the Most of Your Hawaii Trip via Land and Sea

land and sea travel hawaii

Hawaii’s natural beauty and cultural richness pull in throngs of travelers all year long. Even during a summer slowdown, Hawaii sees thousands of visitors, counting 199,760 tourists in 2022 from Japan alone. In a regular season, Hawaii can receive up to 1.6 million visitors in total. This Pacific archipelago is home to incredible sights and is a particular favorite for sailors and regular tourists alike. In this article, we discuss how to immerse yourself in Hawaii’s treasures through both road trip adventures and exhilarating yacht journeys.

Unveiling Hawaii by land

land and sea travel hawaii

Many tourists frequent public transportation despite the additional challenges of plotting the route system and bus schedule and competing for a spot against other commuters. However, contrary to popular belief, a rental car is best for saving time, energy, and even money when traveling by land. The key is in how you choose and use the rental car. Instead of renting at popular but expensive tourist spots like Waikiki, you can choose from the  car rentals at Honolulu Airport . The rentals can be booked online to secure the lowest rates before the high season starts. Additionally, you can search the website later to rebook at any lower rate available. This gives you a choice to rent your dream vehicle, whether that’s a convertible for an open-air feeling or a Wrangler or SUV for a sportier ride. Once you have your ideal rental car , you can craft your itinerary and embark on your adventure. Take advantage of the flexibility of driving your own vehicle. For instance, a 10-minute detour along the Farrington Highway will bring you to Mokule’ia Beach, where you can enjoy solitude alongside lucent, turquoise waters. Such discoveries will round out your trip and count among the most memorable moments of your vacation.

Navigating Hawaii’s aquatic wonders

Many people would be happy to end their Hawaiian vacation with a road trip — not realizing that the full potential of a rental car is unlocked only when you use the vehicle to travel to the coastline and begin the sea part of your adventure. For instance, you can drive back to Oahu’s windward shore after thoroughly exploring the islands by land. Here, you can rent different watercraft near Kaneohe Bay, from sailboats to even kayaks, to reach the Kaneohe Sandbar. Extending approximately a mile in width and three miles in length, this submerged sandbar is a hidden gem that’s only accessible when you allow yourself to travel Hawaii via land and sea.

land and sea travel hawaii

For beginners, sailing is often best done during the summer, when the islands experience warm, stable weather conditions around 30°C (around 86°F) and consistent trade winds. However, Hawaii is still a viable sailing destination during the winter months. The trade winds may be less predictable, but you can enjoy quieter anchorages and fewer crowds. Some areas, like the Big Island’s Kona coast, also experience more sheltered conditions, making winter sailing more manageable.

land and sea travel hawaii

Otherwise, it may be best to skip the solo sailboats and kayaks and immediately opt for a reputable yacht charter company from November to April. Experienced captains are familiar with local conditions and can provide insights into the best anchorages and snorkeling spots during these colder months.

For the ultimate maritime adventure, you can consider a yacht charter vacation any time of the year. A  yacht charter in Honolulu  will allow you to explore the coastline and even cruise the windward neighbor islands of Molokai, Lanai, and Maui. You can visit Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor by car, then make your way to Turtle Canyon by yacht and enjoy the once-in-a-lifetime experience of swimming alongside green sea turtles, reef fish, and pods of dolphins. By the end of your trip, you can sail your way back to land, where your rental car will be waiting to bring you to Honolulu Airport, thus ending your Hawaii trip safe and sound.

Does this sound like an exciting experience? To seamlessly blend land and sea exploration in Hawaii, charter a yacht with us today at The Windward Islands Cruising Company. Our 20-year expertise ensures a smooth sailing experience, allowing you to confidently uncover the island’s hidden gems for an unbeatable Hawaii trip.

Great company. I've been on 3 tours with them and will soon be going on my 4th tour soon. Why do I like them? Very caring, very helpful, very knowledgeable. For everyone, especially for retirees and seniors, they bend over backwards fulfilling their job as tour guides. You'll never be hungry whenever you travel with them!

This is way overdue but we used them to see China and the Northwest province. I can say enough about the quality of service, hotels and the guides. We've used other tour companies before and Air and Sea far surpassed any of them. The hotels were first class and our tour director made sure we were taken care of- for example, he made sure we kept hydrated in the hot weather. During our tour we met many loyal repeat customers and they all raved about the other tours they had taken with them. Must be because we encountered a lot of them. We would not hesitate to use them for other tours, especially to Asia. And a big shout out to our awesome tour director Michael!

We just returned from a wonderful Harbin Ice and Snow Festival Tour with Air and Sea Travel. All our guides and bus drivers were outstanding and Michael, our tour manager, demonstrated such an energetic and enthusiastic love for travel. Michael and Brenda (local guide in China) displayed strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. They worked so hard and solved issues like taking an injured visitor to the hospital and finding another person's misplaced phone very professionally. Mr. Wong, the bus driver, performed in a safe and courteous manner. The itinerary was well balanced and we were greeted so warmly by the people in various Chinese cities. The agenda included touring the beautiful seaside city of Dalian to visiting the hot spring resort in the Changbaishan Mountain to seeing the Rimed Trees along the Songhua River and finally, enjoying the spectacular sculptures at the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival. The meal arrangements were outstanding...featuring a variety of local dishes...especially the Ice Palace hot pot dinner! Thank you for treating us to such a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Air and Sea Travel Center is a full service, professional travel company that offers reasonably priced tours to a vast array of destinations around the world. They are a great source for efficient travel planning, especially Joey. We've gone on several tours with them and have been impressed with their super organized, knowledgeable, dependable, and incredibly hard working guides. Henry, Derrick, and Ryan all have a great wealth of information and experience and will provide you with excellent travel services. They consistently delivered high quality service with a sense of humor and a personalized approach. On our recent trip to Singapore and Thailand with Henry, we had a wonderful time enjoying the scenery and cultural sites, eating absolutely delicious food like chili crab and abalone, relaxing with cheap Thai massages, and meeting friendly people. The local guides were also very knowledgeable and conscientious. Best of all, we made many new travel friends and can't wait to go on future trips with Air and Sea again! For your dedication, reliability, and experience...our warmest mahalo!

Having traveled with other tour agencies, a significant distinction with traveling with Air & Sea are the exceptional Hawaii tour guides traveling with the tour group and managing your tour from the moment you arrive at the airport until you return through customs and waiting at the curbside for your ride home. Each Hawaii based tour guide is either a full time long-term employee or the owner of Air & Sea. They are a close knit group and have repeatedly traveled to each destination frequently over many years. They are very knowledgeable of each site being visited. For instance, they know where the restrooms are located at each site being visited without hesitation; what specialty items are unique to the site; why the site is unique in comparison to Hawaii; many times the vendors at a site are familiar with the Air & Sea tour guide and give tour members a "Hawaii discount"; they can make immediate on the spot adjustments to itinerary (i.e., caused by weather, time lost due to traffic conditions, unforeseen changes to visitation times by sites, health condition of a tour member) to ensure tour members can get the best experience and value while on the tour; and, the amount of time to properly allocate visiting a site based upon the local conditions and popularity of a site. They are funny and offer humorous experiences from previous travels to a site during the long bus rides. (During a recent tour, the Air & Sea tour guide purchased a large amount of ramen from Japan in preparation for his next tour to the British Isles and to be shared with tour members. He said, "sometimes hard to get ramen when you get tired of the food over there.") But paramount above all is their concern for the health and safety of each tour member. They are always aware that many tour members are "mature" retired travelers or may have unique health conditions requiring special considerations, including people with food allergies. Each morning, water bottles are dispense to each tour member on the bus. (On one occasion, the tour guide immediately went to a local 7-11 store to purchase water/ice tea when the expected case of water was not available/delivered to the hotel/bus at departure.) They are physically capable to assist tour members with luggage upon arrival and departure at each hotel. They have a long-term favorable relationship with the local tour guides and tour coordinators at the destination that enhances a flexible coordination and adjustments to an itinerary on an as needed basis. (During a recent visit, the local tour guide, without hesitation, personally escorted me a find a shop to purchase a unique item not available in Hawaii during a free-time at a site. The local tour guide took the time to research the location and how best to walk with us to the store.) Air & Sea also provided stays at very nice hotels and the meals are always memorable. (It seems that people at Air & Sea planning the tour like to eat well.) During my previous tours with Air & Sea, I was impressed with the number of tour members who have repeatedly traveled with Air & Sea. They have consistently stated the same reasons I like about Air & Sea. I look forward to traveling with Air & Sea again.

Great staff in Hawaii and also in Japan...shout out to Shannon (travel agent) and Mike (tour guide). My large family went to Japan in July 2023. From beginning to end, it was easy, fun, fast paced and memorable. Shannon was patient booking our travel and answering all of my numerous questions that comes with accommodating our large family needs. Mike, Narita-san and Yoskiko-san did an amazing job getting all of us to/from each site for 10 days and entertaining us on the bus. They were accommodating to our needs (baby's milk/diapers and laundry) and were always available to help with what ever questions we had. This was our first trip to Japan and will definitely go again!

Signing up for second tour - get to know you lunch was great and very helpful staff. Loved Michael the tour guide who went with us to Hokkaido.

Been on quite a few with Air and Sea!!! Excellent service and helpful office staff. China, Japan, etc. tours informative including their staff in the Countries we visited. Derrick Kaw is one of our favorties! Not every tour company stays with you upon arrival at your home port, to make sure ALL luggage was received and stay till everyone has left. Hubby and I have NO complaints!!! Tho we miss Grace who was always "super" helpful with anything WE needed help with!!! So looking forward to our next adventure soon!!!

I needed assistance obtaining a visa for China, and they did a great job making it happen. I called first and got my questions answered. I was able to walk in without an appointment and was served fairly quickly. They filled out the form for me online, so I did not have to worry about doing it incorrectly. I wasn't sure of all the places I was going to stay, but it was not an issue. I paid $10 extra for them to take the necessary photos. It took a bit more than a half hour to complete the form, take the photos, and pay. You must leave your passport with them. Applications and passports are picked up / dropped off once a week. Call in advance to ask what that day is and come in the day beforehand. They'll call you when your passport is returned. I got my passport with visa back quickly, but to be safe, allow at least three weeks.

Photo of Annie W.

This review is based on my experience getting a visa for leisure travel to China (Chinese Visa): The ladies at this office were all super informative and professional. My situation was a little problematic as I'm a foreign passport holder; I felt a tad guilty for calling them about 3 times or so and kept them on the phone for about 30 - 40 minutes at a time... but nevertheless, they were courteous and they laid out all my options with associated prices. I was able to tell they were giving me their best and honest judgement on my situation. Today my husband was able to apply for a Chinese visa through their office. They were quick! They asked a few simple questions and we paid only $180 (paid as a check) all together for a 10 year visa (hopefully the consulate will grant us the visa). If you needed passport photos, their location also provides that service for $6 for 2 photos. As for parking: I think there is a public/customer parking garage. The lady who helped me apply for the visa asked me where I parked. I'm guessing she's asking because she was planning to validate a parking ticket or something. But I parked elsewhere in Chinatown.

Photo of Philip T.

I came here to get my visa for China since it's for 10 years now Grace was very knowledgeable and help me through the whole process. It took approximately one week to get it sent to the mainland and back

land and sea travel hawaii

Board your air-conditioned motorcoach for a narrated drive through beautiful Kona. The white sand beaches, lush green foliage and dramatic lava formations captivate visitors lucky enough to travel along the Kona coastline.

Home to coffee plantations and macadamia groves, historic Kona is a thriving community with natural splendor and a lively culture. For truly dramatic views, to the southeast lies Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to volcanoes Mauna Loa and Kilauea - one of the most active in the world.

Your guided tour takes you for a visit to Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, which translates to "Place of Refuge at Honaunau." This enchanting cultural site is a lovingly restored ancient Hawaiian religious sanctuary. Built in 1650, the "Place of Refuge" originally housed the bones of Hawaiian chiefs. It later became a place of sanctuary for outlaws and defeated warriors. Highlights in this national historic park are the great Ki'i figures guarding the temple, the spectacular flora and fauna and the sense of peace and tranquility that echoes through the area.

A wide variety of Kona's famous coffees are on display at the Royal Kona Coffee Store. Refresh yourself with a sample and learn about the distinctive flavors in Kona's legendary brews. Coffee beans have been grown in the region since 1828. The nutrient-rich volcanic soil of Kona as well as the island's elevation and climate create ideal conditions for growing flavorful, quality coffee. You will have an opportunity to purchase some beans as a souvenir.

Continue through picturesque towns and villages, along magnificent coastal vistas and past historic landmarks and attractions. You'll return to port for the “sea” portion of your tour. Your guided historical lunch cruise on a 65’ catamaran will capture your imagination and reveal secrets of the Big Island when ancient, powerful kings ruled the rugged and fertile land of the Hawaiian Islands. Unwind along the way and enjoy a deli-style lunch and beverages or enjoy your favorite libation from our full-service cash premium bar. Our Historian will share Hawaiian history, stories and legends relating to the numerous landmarks along 12 miles of Kona coastline. You'll visit famous points of interest including the Ahu'ena Heiau, Holua Slide and the Kaumo'o Battlefield. There's an excellent chance of seeing marine life during your cruise and even humpback whales if you're with us during December-March. Enjoy live Hawaiian style music during the narration breaks and the entire trip back to the Kailua Pier.

When cruising to a tropical destination like Hawaii, the more time the better – and that’s why Hawaiian cruisetours are such a great option. You’ll not only island hop to the best spots within the island chain, you’ll also have a few straight days on land to really immerse yourself in the charming Hawaiian way of life. Before cruising around the island, head to the Polynesian Cultural Center to start your vacation off with a better understanding of the local culture. Afterwards, you’ll still have plenty of time to explore the North Shore, to hike along the Oahu coastline and pay your respects at the USS Arizona Memorial. With a Hawaii cruisetour, your extra time on the island is whatever you want to make of it – a relaxing retreat before your activity-filled adventure, or a jam-packed quest through one of the world’s most beautiful destinations.

Things to Do on a Cruisetour to Hawaii

There is certainly no shortage of things to do and places to see in Hawaii, and a cruisetour provides you with a few extra days to really make the most of your time on the islands. Hawaiian cruisetours typically focus on the island of Oahu, which is ripe for discovery – especially if you’re interested in nature, history, culture or food. Highlighted below are a few of our favorite things to see and do when on a Hawaiian cruisetour:

Hawaii Cruisetours, Woman Surfing in Hawaii, Paddling out to the Lineup

  • Go for a surf lesson or just observe the experts as they ride the famous waves of Oahu’s North Shore. Make your way to the local surf shops, craft / art galleries and restaurants to strike up a conversation with the locals and find out what draws so many people to this legendary surf spot and artistic region.
  • Head to the Polynesian Cultural Center to learn about the traditional Hawaiian way of life, and discover what one of the original island villages would have looked like. Hawaii’s natives have descended from several Southern Pacific nations like Fiji, Tahiti, Samoa and New Zealand – and their cultures have all blended beautifully and are preserved in the island’s dances, games and festivals.

Hawaii Cruisetours U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii

  • Visit the USS Arizona Memorial and pay your respects to the lives lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor. This remarkable memorial, which sits directly above the sunken USS Arizona battleship, features a shrine to the lost crewmembers and visitor center full of information about the attack.
  • Oahu is full of sites dedicated to preserving the history of World War II, including the Pacific Aviation Museum. The museum, which is housed within former airplane hangars located on Ford Island, showcases bombers and fighter planes that were actually used during the Allied campaign.

Hawaii Cruisetours Easter island head on Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii

  • If you’re interested in learning more about ancient Hawaii, travel to Kualoa Ranch where the island’s history comes to life. You’ll unearth ancient farming practices, witness oyster cultivation and learn about the indigenous plant and wildlife. Plus, you get to ride to a treasured pond in a traditionally styled catamaran.
  • Sometimes the best thing to do in Hawaii is to simply slow down and admire the view. That’s exactly what you can do at the historic Nu’uanu Pali Lookout. Located 1,000 feet above the coast, this stone lookout offers one-of-a-kind vistas from a historic battle site.

Bryan Murphy 0:48

Hello and welcome to Episode 47 of Hawaii's Best. So glad that you are tuning in today. Today I am joined with Michael Clem, who is the owner of land and sea golf with locations in Carmel by the sea, California and in Honolulu that recently just opened up back in November of 2020. On today's episode, we talk all about that opening up of that new location. We also talked about the current golf, climate and culture, how right now is an incredible time to pick up the game of golf. And especially if you're traveling to Hawaii, some of the best courses in the world are located on the islands. And getting out there on the courses. You not only got to look good doing it, you got to feel good too. And that's where land and sea golf come into play with their incredible attire and golf gear. This is gonna be a fun one. You want to make sure you go to land and see golf.com where you can check out everything that Michael and his team have going on over there. So let's go ahead and we're going to head on over and we're going to talk story with Michael from land and sea golf.

Michael, thank you so much for coming on Hawaii's Best today. How was the holidays for you?

Michael Klem 2:21

I was really good. I got to spend a lot of time in California and heading back to Hawaii. Now. This is the first time in a couple years where I haven't been out in Hawaii for Christmas. So a little different for me excited to head back.

Bryan Murphy 2:32

So land and sea golf. This is something that actually started in California, correct?

Michael Klem 2:38

Yeah, you know, I would say it was kind of developed more or less in Hawaii. Okay, I moved out there in 2008. I went and played college golf for BYU Hawaii, which is a campus up on the North Shore of Oahu. I lived up at Turtle Bay, the condos there which is super close to golf course and the North Shore and surf and everything and I went to college out there finished up I ended up staying out there and working as a sales rep for a golf surf company called link soul. They're based in Oceanside, California and kind of deep roots in the surf culture and then a lot and then golf also. So I worked out there for about two or three years. And you know, as I was selling, you know, this golf clothing company to you know, all the different like resorts and mostly like resort shops and beach shops. And so lots of like Turtle Bay and like, it was kind of cool to see how this brand which is a little more lifestyle and the golf space was able to kind of translate into like, you know, a little more of a surf culture, we get a lot of like hybrid shorts and products like that. So I always had this thought of like incorporating this brand with a lot of other like like minded brands into kind of a retail concept. You know, I was always super impressed by some of the really cool like surf boutique retail out there like meelo down in town is super cool, a little hot exchange and quiet. Like we have these really, really more destination retail like you go to the shop because they have really cool stuff and their vibe and their Instagrams really cool. And I was like you know, there's really is nothing like that for the golf. You know, all these golf shops are pretty cookie cutter, kind of basic, more like club driven, not less about like the style and like, the nice thing about Hawaii is you can wear a T shirt most places when you play and wear shorts, it's not so much about like tuck your shirt in Polo, where you can kind of wear that weird untucked and wearing you know, aloha shirt want to play. So I kind of thought that it was a space for that more lifestyle retail and the goal of the little golf focus. And so I will you know, as I was out there, I thought about it. And then my wife who's from the wahoo sharees. She's funny, okay, we got married three years ago, and so I was kind of in a transition of taking over the California territory for link so I was going to still keep Hawaii but I needed to move to California. So with that I can kind of pick where I want to live. The company was based in Southern California, but since I do sales, it can pick up Wherever I want to live, so we picked Pebble Beach just because while there's epic golf in this area, and I figured if I was gonna, you know, commute around the state and commute to Hawaii, like where would I want to be on the weekends if I had to live in California, so we chose this area. About a year after being here, we kind of decided to roll out that land and sea concepts and open a store May of last year in Carmel by the sea, which is pretty close to where we live. And we rolled that out pretty cool launch, we did it right before the US Open, which was at Pebble Beach that year, couple pool parties and kind of rolled up from there and some of the concepts and like we always kind of wanted to have a little Hawaii influence, you know what, pretty well. And then about six or eight months after that, we were like, okay, let's, you know, we always want to do one Hawaii. So we kind of started to develop that one. And now we open that Honolulu location was supposed to open early, early 2020, then, and then, you know, COVID happen

Bryan Murphy 5:53

in though that that location recently opened, correct.

Michael Klem 5:57

Yeah, it was slated to open march of 2020. Like, perfect timing. Right, right. Yeah, like we're gonna open the end of the month, we got everything done definitely, like, early April was the timeframe. You know, we were kind of I was there really, like, early March, just like finishing up a couple things with the painter, getting ready to ship, you know, ships and fixtures in picking up a couple things that I was getting made on the island. And then they're all scheduled dropped back, I was gonna fly back for a week two, just to California to get some work stuff done, and then come right back out that, you know, the whole world was it, March 16 1718, everything just started to shut down. And then so luckily, you know, my landlord was very nice and epic and super easy to work with. And we're able to push back that opening, you know, was a little bit scary times, you know, our shop here shut down for almost 90 days in Carmel, and the Hawaii one and we'd really didn't know when I was gonna open. You know, through that whole time. We're like, Oh, it's open in June was open in July, you know, I listened some of the other podcasts you had about, like, you know, the whole testing program being rolled out, that, you know, was always delayed every month, you're like, what am I gonna go out there and finish this thing? Should I have this thing, always on my mind the whole time, but we were able to, with the, with the great support of our landlord we have, and down there at the core tower. We were able to open up, you know, right November, early November, you know, different kind of opening and our Carmel location, no big party, no big, you know, anything like that, trying to follow the COVID procedures. You know how to tell family Hey, guys gotta wait outside. You know, it's amazing. The locals forgot from my wife's family from all my friends and family lives on the island that come out and visit and you guys feel like snap like, you know, five people in the shop at a time you know, all these roles. It's like hard. Tell your family. It's like 20 people show up. You know, like, you guys space it out. Don't come you gotta wait outside. But yeah, you know, we opened up in November it was it was pretty exciting for us to do that. And I really think it was special for my wife and all her family because it was a pretty much a family affair having like my, you know, my father in law helped out he's pretty handy up do all the work and save a little dough there. Because it was so interesting. Try to navigate all that especially being delayed so on.

Bryan Murphy 8:22

So how does that I've been just thinking as far as balance life, and still doing, obviously sales with linksall, which is a huge, awesome company. And now opening another spot and still running the one in Carmel, how have you kind of found a rhythm? You know,

Michael Klem 8:41

I think the biggest thing is just communicating. You know, luckily, my wife's cousin or the two of our employees that run the shop in Hawaii. My brother's super cool, easy, you know, luckily is my brother so my younger brother is easy to work with and kind of listens to me and we've been able to work together and you know, open and you know, run programs and incentives and you know, different things with him and make it work. So, you know, luckily with the you know, the the Hawaii testing program, it's pretty easy to fly back and forth now is the test so you can get it pretty quickly. So now I go back and forth couple times since then. So that's that's working and the rhythm, you know, I wouldn't say we're, you know, it's still trying to find the rhythm. It's only been two months, but we don't have a lot of support from some friends and family on the island. So it's been great.

Bryan Murphy 9:28

Now how would you compare kind of going more into depth in the golf culture because a lot of people who are listening to this right now are dreaming of that next vacation to Hawaii and a lot of those people do come with their clubs. Yeah, and want to get on the course but I'm just curious because you talked a little bit about links all and their vibe as far as a brand. And with Lana See, I'm just curious just as far as the golf culture is concerned, comparing to where you're at in Carmel and Alaska. How would you compare those two cultures?

Michael Klem 10:02

A lot of like my friends here that golf, a lot of them do surf, you know, it's

Unknown Speaker 10:07

a little colder, you

Michael Klem 10:07

have thrown a wetsuit. And I think that's one of the things that kind of drew me to, like, if we're not going to live in Hawaii, where else reading I live in this area, the quality of golf, the surface like was like, Okay, this is a good spot to live. And so, you know, they call this area, one of the greatest meetings of land and see that whole Pebble Beach Monterey Peninsula area. And so that's kind of where we can see the whole land and see golf cart is like it's a, it's that lifestyle of like living by the ocean where you know, you do surf, you do golf, and I think that is no more evident than, like, you know, a wahoo in Hawaii, where there's some of the, you know, best golf in the world. And same thing in the Monterey Peninsula area, like quality golf is like, second to none between those two areas. Pretty good. So, you know, I consider, we can, you know, that whole lifestyle and by the land sea, and kind of working in Lynx soul is just a very kind of casual take on golf attire. You know, I think it that resonate with me, like living in Hawaii, where, you know, you don't want to wear that big, you know, bright pink, you know, Nike shirt, and, or else if you're like going out to dinner the North Shore, people would, I would, I would just feel out of place and, you know, you would get people be like, what are you doing here, but like, you know, that's just not the attire that I would like to wear. And especially, I think that resonates on the golf course, it's a little more casual, it's clothes that you can wear out to dinner wear to work, you know, go to the bar after you know around a golf and grab some food and not feel totally out of place. Like I feel like some golf attire, like the white pants in the white belt is really kind of what links for what latency is about. It's more, you know, that take of like a surface aesthetic of just very casual natural colors. And natural fabrications is kind of what we look for in the land and sea vibe is same thing with blink soul. So they paired well together. And then a lot of same thing with some of the accessories other brands that we have in there.

Bryan Murphy 12:04

Now, some of the most incredible courses obviously are where you're at right now Pebble Beach area, but also to on Oahu, and also the surrounding neighbor islands. What are some of the like, must do, you're coming to Hawaii, you got to make sure you head up this course or that course.

Michael Klem 12:24

Yeah, totally. I think if you go to a wall who, you know, public kahuku on the North Shore for what you pay is awesome. It's a nine hole little gem on the North Shore of a wahoo like 10 minutes through Turtle Bay. I think it's a great like, go play there in the morning, maybe go to Turtle Bay in the afternoon. And it's want to get like a full day of golf. But nine holes, epic, you know, views are all on the ocean. And for it's super reasonable. I don't remember what the like non local rate is. But I think it's like 18 bucks or 20 bucks, you can go play this dope golf course, on the ocean. anywhere else. You're paying hundreds to hundreds, you know, I live next to Pebble Beach for the charge, you know, $550 and you're at a golf on the ocean for like 20 bucks. I mean, you really can't beat that on the North Shore with a walker. And the conditions aren't like Primo. But I mean, hey, it's all about the views more or less. are sure and you're in your you're hanging out with. So I think you know kahuku is a must go see Turtle Bay. I love all the guys that they're amazing. And it's a fun spot to hang. And there's a little restaurant ladies there, which is a little putting green out front, you can hang out. As far as COVID COVID environment super mellow. It's a great spot to hang out there.

Bryan Murphy 13:34

Now talking a little bit more about resorts and obviously, you think of resort you naturally think about the golf course attached to it. Or I'm thinking about like the colina area right, Westside. How have those types of courses fared this past year?

Michael Klem 13:51

Yeah, you know, what's cool about what I do is I sell also links to all those guys that work in the resort business. And it's been interesting to see how they've been able to handle and manage and I talked to them a lot just because now we're involved in what products to buy, whether it's like LA, which is a great area, and they have you know, they sell products that I work with another link sold to and then colina like the other businesses definitely been effective. I think golf as a whole. In general in the mainland, you know, the United States has been really boosted by COVID is one of the only safe activities you can do. You know, outside of you know, maybe cert like surfing and golf are booming now, because it's one of the few things you can do. It's very COVID friendly and code safe. Those golf course has been drastically impacted. You know, especially with the resorts not open or just like Turtle Bay as an example the resorts shut down right now but the golf courses opens their business is way down. You know, I think as we've been on the open up the last two months, you've seen some of that business come back, but I think it's, you know, a while a couple months away from getting back to healthy levels for for the islands, but vice versa, the low municipal golf courses are very packed clubs in the area are, it's hard to get a tee time the people are playing golf, I think just those resort courses on islands are a little bit more open. And you also can get some great deals now if you're willing to venture out to the islands too.

Bryan Murphy 15:15

So just for clarity, those courses, even though like a resort, like Turtle Bay may be temporary close right now. The courses are available to be played.

Michael Klem 15:25

Yep. Absolutely. out to local and to visitors to

Bryan Murphy 15:30

great. Yeah, you're absolutely right. You know, being in California at the golf course is one of the first thing to like, reopen one of my buddies, he's an avid golfer. And that was one of the things that he was, like, just so pumped to get back out there. And I know that there are a lot of people who hadn't played in a while, who kind of got back out on the on the courses as well. So that's cool. Yeah, totally. I

Michael Klem 15:52

you know, it's kind of therapeutic, you think, Hey, this is this was a very stressful year for everybody, no matter how you fared out, you know, economically and socially, it was a hard, it was a hard time, but I think being able to go golf, and if you can socially, you know, hang out with some of your friends and do it in a safe way. And it's a great thing to do for a couple of hours. And, you know, I'm glad to see that the industry is kind of at a resurgence this last year, I think that'll definitely help, you know, the courses in Hawaii, you know, just in general, the whole golf industry to kind of grow and expand which it needed a little bit of a boost in the last couple years. I think this, you know that there's a big rise, I was reading a couple articles where, you know, there's more rounds played this year than in like 1997 with golf with Tiger Woods was like kind of a resurgence of the game. And this year was like the same amount or more rounds played. So it's cool to see that golf is making a comeback. I think he'll continue to kind of stay strong as people realize the great social activity, you know, when you can't go to your friends, you guys can probably go out and play around and hang out. And now you don't stress about, you know, COVID where you can't really go have like a you know, a family barbecue or something like that, or hanging out watching you know, a game just because it's a little more socially a little safer to do that and go play golf. So, yeah.

Bryan Murphy 17:10

So in comparing to like, 2018 2019 the rounds played were a lot less it had it been on a decline, would you say? Yeah,

Michael Klem 17:17

definitely, I would say definitely been on a decline, you know, a lot of golf courses for closing this little, you know, little there wasn't the demand, there was, you know, 789 10 years ago. But now, I mean, you start to get a tee time at most places, especially I know an area where I live where, you know, you're in Monterey, Carmel, you're, you know, an hour and a half drive from San Francisco an hour from San Jose. those courses in the area people want to get out of their house and go and I know the same thing in Hawaii, like all the way which is right in town is super packed, like you need to, you can book a tee time a week out, you have to call that morning, like right when they open or else you're not gonna get the tee time for the following week. Like you can't just call and be like, Hey, can I get out tomorrow or today or something? No tee time availability. So it's cool to see that. That is cool.

Bryan Murphy 18:04

Yeah, what cause kind of that decline or lack of interest the previous years,

Michael Klem 18:10

I think it was the lack of time, you know, I think a lot of guys were commuting to work spending two hours in a car, you know, they had to be at the office at eight o'clock, they had to be there till five they got a family kids, it might have played a little bit when they were growing up. But now you know those things, pull away from the ability to go spend a couple hours and go play golf whereas now you're stuck working at home, you've been home with the kids all day you know you need a little bit of a break and get out of the house and you know you're not driving two hours or you know you're say live on the west side and a walk when you're not driving an hour and a half to town for work anymore. You work from home. I think that part of the art community that can work from home and sell them a job has a lot more time on their hands and I think golf is a great outlet for that. I think that's kind of helped surge interest into the sport.

Bryan Murphy 19:04

That's great. Now for Landon see how has interest in this past year with the resurgence of rounds played speaking mainly into your Carmel location but then also love to shift over to how things are going on a lot.

Michael Klem 19:21

Yeah, you know, the Carmel location we were to open back up in June and it was a little you know, I think people were a little uneasy about going back and being around people and shopping like the first month or two and I think that was definitely shown in sales and you know versus June of last year was our best year that mess month a year and it was besides maybe shut down and it wasn't one of our greatest funds. So then you know it close slowly kept you know building in I think as more people got into the game, you know they needed clothes and accessories and gloves, different things like that and issues and we saw our sales you know every month since opening back up slowly and creasing increase and increasing the Carmel location. So it's been a nice kind of to see, you know, year over year, I mean, not being open a full year, we were shut down for about three months that COVID shut down. But this to see sales kind of increase and see the interest in golf and new customers and new people like, Hey, you know, like bringing their wives and their girlfriend into like, hey, my wife is learning how to play golf. We're both getting back into it. You know, we need to get gloves and shoes and all these things like, Oh, that's awesome, you know, like kind of being stoked for them getting back into the game. And so I think you see a lot of newcomers come to the game, which has been cool to see over the last couple of months. And I think as we've opened Hawaii in November, you know, that interest is definitely like, you know, November 1 month being open, you know, holiday season pretty good, but then December slowly increase and you know, we hope that in January here we'll just continue to see a little increase as more people come back to the islands more people that live there part of the year are going to come back is January, February March.

Bryan Murphy 21:01

Yeah, I'm curious you know, surf lessons are a thing you can go you know, get surf lessons and Waikiki. Yeah, pretty much anywhere if someone is coming, and maybe they've never even picked up a club before, but they see like this beautiful scenery. They want to get out in the course. How would you help that person? Or what are some tools that someone can you know, be directed towards on vacation or just picking up golf in general?

Michael Klem 21:27

Yeah, I think picking up golf you know, what's super cool is about a lot of the resorts have these beginning packages that you can go out and play like three or four holes. I know my friend on coai your help runs the princeville area and they do this little like wine and dine thing where you go play three holes, get some wine, and then watch the sunset. And it's a great way to like kind of introduce your you know, your spouse or your loved one to the game. And also like get her on the golf course. Get yourself out there too. Yeah, I think you know, a lot of these resorts and offer like less than packages where you can come out if you're staying there for a week, you get two or three lessons and go play an afternoon nine I think if you're learning the game, the best time is to kind of go and try to play. Don't play the full round and go play you know, nine holes in the afternoon and take your time and enjoy it. Enjoy more or less just being outside. You know, I think that's what the game is about. It's not so much about hitting the ball far trying to be good at it. It's more about enjoying being outside. Yeah, I think you know, if you're new on the island, look up wherever you're staying, if there's golf packages or lesson packages, and I think what's really cool is the golf space. You know, being able to open right back up has kind of figured out ways to do things and teach lessons and get out there.

Bryan Murphy 22:40

And probably one of the very first things that you'll notice once you step out on your first hole is you got to have like the right attire to write. Yeah, so that's kind of where land and sea comes into play. Just golf attire in general and the the products that you guys offer. How would you help just kind of describe why would someone want to look into like Atlanta and see. And as far as golf attire in general,

Michael Klem 23:06

cool thing about like the gear that we sell and seeing the brands that are part of that product mix shops is like it's super easy to wear, you know, our shorts or t shirts, like we make a hybrid short from links so that you can take go jump in the water and play golf, go on a hike, go do a quick workout outside and you don't really have to change because the fabric is like a super quick drying and Fabius fabric that you take in the water and play golf and go hike it's stretchy enough you can kind of where wherever and saying things or shirts or shirts are kind of like well you know, while I'm organic pods and recycled poly kind of sustainable fabrics that don't look like big bright, you know, things that you're wearing. But we also have some really cool patterns you this really kind of fun it's like a knit fabric so it like feels like a polo but it's an aloha shirt so you can like it stretches enough to you know play golf in it. That's cool, but it kinda has that like nice you know, go play nine holes in the afternoon and go out to dinner and you know performs and stretch enough to where are some of the like the standard old school Aloha shirts or just a little too stiff and don't have enough given the shoulders to you know, kind of be you know, move around enough as much as as the kind of some of the products that we offer. So, you know, we have some great shoes from this shoe company that's truly square they're like a knit golf shoe. So it's like a knit top so you can wear it you know socks, cruise around, kick them off and running on the beach or go on a quick hike and get them where they dry out super fast. So you know I think we got a couple really cool products that make your vacation a little easier to do if you want to go hike, go golf, go to the beach. I think having gone back and forth to Hawaii. I think you know the safe place to go to do a right do testing and I think you know it's gonna be a great place to go play golf. There's amazing options on Oahu. Maui, Big Island, Hawaii has some new programming, we can get back over there and enjoy being outside and enjoy golf. And if you stopped by a wahoo, or you can stop our shop or kind of right near down, you know, near that South Shore marked area elewana zone. So kind of gear up for a great trip. If you're only there for a week, we got some nice gear to kind of do a couple different activities and

Bryan Murphy 25:19

so people can find you online and on.

Michael Klem 25:23

Totally if you know we have a website, everything that's available. Liquid COVID was cool as we had a lot of time to work on our online presence, everything that's available in our shops in Hawaii, Ottawa was available online. So Atlanta and see golf.com, you can go check that out. We have some, you know, in our we have collection pages just here in Hawaii gear from Carmel. So yeah, you can totally find everything. And you would be able to get in our shops in Hawaii online, too.

Bryan Murphy 25:49

Yeah. And we'll definitely guys will link all that into the show notes. Obviously. I'm curious, Michael, because you, you've been going back and forth a couple times, like you mentioned, from California to Hawaii. And that's a lot of people from California that tend to travel to Hawaii. I'm curious, from your perspective, what has that been like for you? I know you mentioned, you know, testing, and it's been pretty seamless. We still get a lot of questions and a lot of, you know, clarity, but we'd love to hear firsthand from you. How has traveling to Hawaii, and then traveling back to Hawaii band and what tips would you give to someone?

Michael Klem 26:28

Totally. Okay. So, you know, before COVID, I would go back and forth to Hawaii probably once a month, or once every six weeks for about a week to work. And I was more like a business traveler. And so I was there quite a bit. So I'm used to traveling, I think as COVID hit, you know, you have to do your test before you go. And I found it super easy to use that ball health one where you ship it to your house deal, you spit in the thing and you ship it back. I mean, I have not had any issues with it. Trying to go outer Island, I had a little issue with Walgreens doing my steps back in time to go to Big Island. But you know, it's been pretty easy, I think, you know, planning ahead, getting your test, it looks really awesome, right now, as Hawaiian Airlines is super flexible, allowing you to change your dates and move back and forth. So, you know, plan a window of like, Hey, I'm gonna go Tuesday, Thursday, I don't get my test back in time, you know, they're very, they're very cool about letting you move the ticket back a day or move it up the day. And just be flexible. I think, you know, your hotels and stuff are probably the same way to, you know, just plan ahead and do tests and have a good mass, it's comfortable to wear, because you don't have to wear it on the plane for a couple hours. But you know, going back and forth six or seven times now since COVID. It's really pretty easy. So I mean, just gotta wear your mask. And that's pretty much about it. The only difference? The airlines I've flown every time with Hawaiian and they've been super clean and nice and spaced out. Not super cool. Which has been, which has been cool, too.

Bryan Murphy 27:55

Yeah, that's great. And Hawaiian air isn't a sponsor of this podcast yet. And they'd be great if they were we play Hawaiian, that's this is what we do. They're always great from our experience. So you mentioned the out home test, the saliva base test, which is super convenient. And you can do that through Hawaiian site as well. Correct?

Michael Klem 28:15

Yeah, they have a link and it brings you right to the ball helps thing. And then, you know, once you create your profile, it's pretty easy to reorder tests do it there. I think the hard thing is, you know, the first go around, there's a little bit of a learning curve. Yeah. And so you know, if you're going back, you're going twice a year, and it only gets easier going back and forth. So

Bryan Murphy 28:34

and how quick did you get your results?

Michael Klem 28:36

You know, I did in the morning, I mailed it in that day, and I got it the following afternoon. Yeah, yeah. You know, it's super cool. They overnighted to you, you get it the next day, and then you just ship it in the next day. So that's pretty quick. You know, if I was planning on traveling, I'd probably plan on flying out like Wednesday to Friday. You know, just so you know, take your tests Monday, Tuesday, you get it back Wednesday, Thursday, you have some time there to make sure you get the results back in case your delays. Yeah,

Bryan Murphy 29:05

no flying back. Do you have to test again or

Michael Klem 29:09

no see don't have to test again. The only thing is if you are trying to go inner Island, you can fly to like Big Island, you know, with one test like you fly, you know, find a Honolulu take your plane over to from you know, Honolulu to Kona and that one says you took before kind of things but if you go to Honolulu for five days, and then you want to go to Big Island got to get tested really. So that is the only like, but I realized I'm praying to go to Big Island first, but then when you go from Big Island to Honolulu, you do not have to test again. That's what I did. I'm pretty sure let's change the last couple weeks. Well, great.

Bryan Murphy 29:44

Michael, thank you so much for coming on Hawaii's Best today. Appreciate you man and we'll definitely link out all this good stuff and best of luck to Lana see going into 2021

Michael Klem 29:56

Yeah, absolutely. I'll probably get out there and get outside and play some golf this year. For sure,

Bryan Murphy 30:01

appreciate you and your time.

Michael Klem 30:02

Absolutely. Thank you for your time, man, I was awesome.

Bryan Murphy 30:05

I just want to say thank you again to Michael for coming on today and just sharing some of his insights, some of his perspective from this previous year, but also his heart behind land and sea golf. So again, go to land and sea golf.com To find out more about what they got going on. And I think the biggest key takeaway for me, and just hearing Michael's story is to try something new if if golf happens to be one of those things that you've always wanted to try and do doing that in Hawaii, with no judgment, you just got to get out there and do it. A lot of the resorts do have packages where you can you know, go ahead and do a few rounds and and do the dinner thing. Wherever you're staying, I would just kind of look into that. But even if you are at home or wherever you're at, maybe look into your local golf course and and see what they have, you know, going on their golf is such a cool thing to get into. It's been a while since I've played around, probably back in high school, it's been that long, maybe college. I just love just you know, getting out there. And the actual game of golf is is so much fun and relaxing. And it's just about being outside, relaxing, and all those things that Michael already talked about. So that was my biggest key takeaway, even if it's, you know, surfing or whatever, try something new, and maybe golf is that for your next trip to Hawaii. In the next couple of weeks. I do have some exciting news that I can't wait to share with you guys and how it affects this podcast and how it affects Hawaii's Best. So stay tuned for that. You want to make sure you hit subscribe, so you get notified on the next episode. And I just want to say thank you again for your time, and being awesome. Until next time, be well. Aloha.

Unsurprisingly, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on Hawaiʻi Island is one of the state’s most popular attractions.

This incredible landscape is home to two massive volcanoes – Kīlauea being one of the world’s most active – and stretches from sea level to the summit of Mauna Loa, one of the world’s largest. Sprawling across 333,259 acres on the island's southeastern side, the park is one of the most dynamic and diverse in the US.

Its ever-changing landscape boasts an assortment of terrain, from lush rainforests and barren lava fields to a volcano often dusted with snow every winter. Yes, even in Hawaiʻi!

So grab those hiking boots and binoculars and use our insider guide to get the most out of your first trip to this unique national park.

When is the best time to visit Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park?

There isn’t an especially bad time to visit the park, which sees nearly two million visitors annually. The weather on the Islands doesn’t vary much, with temperatures fluctuating between 66-85°F throughout the year. Winter and early spring, though, tend to be rainier and cooler than other times of the year and hurricane season runs from June to November, which can mean tropical storms, whipping winds and torrential rain.

The busiest travel seasons in Hawaiʻi are summer and winter – summer is peak vacation time for families and winter lures travelers eager to escape colder climes. Expect more people on trails and longer waits for parking during these periods.

Spring and fall are slower travel months and ideal times to visit the park. Trekking conditions are much more comfortable without the intense summer heat and you’ll likely find better airfare prices and hotel rates at nearby hotels. The park does get a surge of visitors during spring break and around the weekend of the annual Merrie Monarch Festival , a week-long hula competition based in Hilo around late March or early April.

Tuesday is the busiest day at the park – pick another day if at all possible. This is when the Pride of America , a cruise ship that sails around the Islands, docks in Hilo. Many of its 2000 passengers head to the national park, hitting popular stops like the Kīlauea Visitor Center , the Kīlauea Iki Trail , and Nāhuku (otherwise known as Thurston Lava Tube ). Winter brings yet more cruise ships to Hawaiʻi Island as thousands of North Pacific humpback whales migrate annually from Alaska to the warmer waters surrounding the Islands.

Though Kīlauea stopped erupting on Sept 16, 2023, the volcano still attracts visitors despite no visible lava fountains or flows. And it’s likely it will erupt again – the Puʻuʻōʻō eruption, which began in 1983 and lasted 35 years, ranks as the longest and most voluminous known outpouring of lava from Kīlauea’s east rift zone in more than 500 years. “If there is an eruption,” says Jessica Ferracane, the park’s spokesperson, “it is busy all day, every day, especially if it’s at the summit of Kīlauea.”

Planning tip: The park is currently undergoing a big disaster recovery project following the 2018 Kīlauea eruption and summit collapse. There could be temporary area closures, lane closures, reduced parking and other limited services for the next two years. Check the park website to check for construction closures and delays .

Find out everything you need to know about what's happening in Hawaii throughout the year in  our guide to the best time to visit the Aloha State

How much time should I plan to spend at the park?

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park may not be as huge as Alaska’s 13.2-million-acre Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve – larger than Yellowstone National Park, Yosemite National Park and Switzerland combined – but it does stretch from sea level to the summit of 13,681-ft Mauna Loa and across seven different ecological zones. You’ll need at least a full day to explore all the best parts of the park but two days are even better.

Park staff recommend that visitors arrive by sunrise to hit the park’s most popular trails first – it's open 24 hours to allow everyone to maximize their time. Dusk is also a wonderful time to go exploring – the lack of light pollution provides dark skies that are perfect for stargazing.

There are a variety of hikes within the national park, from the easy 1.2-mile Kīpukapuaulu Trail to the challenging backcountry treks up Mauna Loa that can take two days. And having an extra day means you can visit the park’s quieter and less crowded Kahuku Unit on the southerly slopes of Mauna Loa. This 116,000-acre former ranchland is about an hour's drive from the Kīlauea Visitor Center and is open to the public five days a week. You can hike to the top of an old cinder cone, trek through a pristine Hawaiian rainforest or bike through scenic pastures with panoramic views of the ranchlands.

The tiny town of Volcano Village just outside the park is also well worth a visit, with its laid-back eateries and food trucks, art galleries, and  a vineyard and winery .

Is it easy to get in and around the park?

The nearest airport is Hilo International, about 30 miles northeast of the park (you can fly into the Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole, but the drive from Kailua-Kona will take about two hours). Getting to the park from Hilo is easy – take Route 11 (Hawaiʻi Belt Road) west until you reach the main entrance. The drive takes about 45 minutes.

Hele-On Bus is the island’s only public bus service, operated by Hawaiʻi County. The No. 11 Red Line runs between Hilo and Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, stopping daily at the Kīlauea Visitor Center. The bus schedule is subject to change, so check ahead. There is no public transportation or shuttle service within the park, so you’ll need a car to get around.

Top things to do at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Kīlauea iki trail.

One of the most popular hikes in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is the 4-mile roundtrip Kīlauea Iki Trail. The terrain is varied – it starts in a forest of native ʻōhiʻa trees and hapuʻu (Hawaiian tree fern) and ends with a walk across an otherworldly crater floor – and it’s short enough to complete in a few hours, giving you plenty of time to visit other parts of the park.

The trailhead is at an overlook of the crater formed from an eruption in 1959 that was marked by fountaining lava over a half-mile long and a plume reaching a world-record 1900ft high. The first part of the trail is a descent through a lush rainforest lined with native ʻōhiʻa and koa trees. Look for the white-rumped ʻapapanae , a nectarivorous Hawaiian honeycreeper, often found flitting from tree to tree. The switchbacks end at the crater floor, a vast moonscape that sharply contrasts with the surrounding native forests.

This lava tube – also known as Thurston Lava Tube – was created by a river of 2000°F (1093°C) molten lava about 500 years ago. Discovered in 1913, this massive lava cave is very accessible, with a flat rock floor and ceiling height of more than 20ft in places. Electric lights illuminate most of the path, though you may want to bring a flashlight – it takes about 20 minutes to stroll through the tube. The rainforest that surrounds Nāhuku is brimming with native birds, including the scarlet ʻiʻiwi , a Hawaiian honeycreeper listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Hōlei Sea Arch

At the end of the Chain of Craters Road – about 18 miles from the Kīlauea Visitor Center – is the Hōlei Sea Arch , a 90-ft-tall rock formation cut into the cliff of an ancient lava flow about 550 years ago. In 2020, the park opened a new viewing area about 1000ft past the gate at the end of the road and set back away from the cliff edge.

Puʻuloa Petroglyphs

There’s an area of Pānau Nui on the southern flank of Kīlauea with numerous pecked images, or petroglyphs, in the hardened lava. Puʻuloa, which translates to “long hill” in ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi (the Hawaiian language), is a sacred place to Native Hawaiians. The archaeological site here boasts more than 23,000 petroglyphs – the largest collection in Hawaiʻi – with motifs of circles, canoe sails, human forms, feathered capes and other geometric shapes.

Devastation Trail

This half-mile hike is suitable for everyone as it's wheelchair and stroller accessible. The paved path meanders through a stark yet beautiful landscape buried by falling cinder from lava fountains of the 1959 Kīlauea Iki eruption. You might find volcanic debris in the form of glass-like droplets and strands called Pele’s Tears and Pele’s Hair, respectively, named after the revered Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes. Nēnē (Hawaiian geese) frequent this area; refrain from feeding or interacting with this threatened species.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park forest

My favorite thing to do at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

Unfortunately, there aren’t many places in Hawaiʻi where you find native forest birds anymore. Their populations have plummeted due to habitat destruction, predators like feral cats, mongoose and non-native mosquitoes that spread avian pox and avian malaria.

But at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, where native habitats are protected and able to thrive, you can see – and hear – a variety of these special birds, from the friendly ʻelepaio (Hawaiian flycatcher) to the elusive ʻōmaʻo (Hawaiian thrush), which can only be found in the montane rainforests on Hawaiʻi Island. The bright orange ʻākepa , an endangered Hawaiian honeycreeper with an odd-shaped beak, can be spotted in the high-elevation forests of the park’s Kahuku Unit. And if you’re lucky, you might catch a glimpse of the endemic ʻio , the only hawk species native to Hawaiʻi.

I love wandering along the 1.2-mile Kīpukapuaulu Trail, an easy loop through pristine native forestland in an area known as a “bird park.” A kīpuka is an area of land that’s surrounded by younger lava flows, like an “island” within a sea of lava. There are more native tree species per acre here than any other forest in the national park, which means you’ll find native forest birds that rely on the native trees that grow here.

How much money do I need?

Park entry costs $30 for a private car, $25 for a motorcycle, and $15 for pedestrians and cyclists. The park has gone cashless, so payment has to be made with debit or credit cards in person or online .

If you're also planning to visit Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park near Kailua-Kona or Haleakalā National Park on Maui, consider buying the Hawaiʻi Tri-Park Annual Pass for $55. This allows you to enter all three of these parks in a single, private vehicle.

The National Park Service offers free admission to everyone on the following days: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the first day of National Park Week in April, Juneteenth, the Great American Outdoors Act, National Public Lands Day and Veterans Day.

Average costs at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park

  • Basic room for two at Volcano House: $80 to $385 per night
  • Airbnb in Volcano: $150 average per night
  • Cup of coffee: $3.50
  • Midrange meal: $15-$20 per person
  • Local beer: $10
  • Gas (regular) in Hilo: $4.81 per gallon

Petroglyphs carved into a rock

How to travel in the park consciously

With two active volcanoes and ongoing construction to repair damage caused by the 2018 Kīlauea eruption, it’s important to stay on marked trails and overlooks and keep out of closed areas. And no matter what you may have seen on social media, please leave the rocks alone and unstacked. Park staff often use ahu (stacked rocks) to mark trails; it’s not an invitation to do the same. Not only is it culturally insensitive but it can be disorienting to hikers who rely on the ahu to guide them along trails. It’s also long believed that taking lava rocks brings bad luck. Hundreds of people return rocks they’ve taken from the park every year.

There are many culturally significant sites within the park, itself a Unesco World Heritage Site. These include petroglyphs, historic trails, fossilized footprints, shelter caves, heiau (Hawaiian temples) and stone walls of canoe sheds and corrals. Many of these sites are listed in the National Register of Historic Places – please be respectful when you get the chance to see them close up.

The land within the park is sacred to Native Hawaiians, with moʻolelo (stories) and mele (songs) tied to this area. They believe Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes, lives in Halemaʻumaʻu Crater at the summit of Kīlauea. If you come across Native Hawaiians performing cultural rituals in the park, keep a respectful distance. Let them – and others – connect undisturbed with nature.

From freezing darkness and empty ski slopes to endless sunshine and cruise crowds, each Alaskan season has its pros and cons. Find your perfect time to go.

Every climbing season High Mountain Rangers of the Denali National Park Service are called to help climbers in need. If possible the patient is brought down to Basecamp on foot, only in life threatening conditions a helicopter is called to evacuate the patient to a hospital in Anchorage. Mount McKinley, native name Denali, is the highest mountain peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,321 feet (6,194 m) above sea level. At some 18,000 feet (5,500 m), the base-to-peak rise is considered the largest of any mountain situated entirely above sea level. Measured by topographic prominence, it is the third most prominent peak after Mount Everest and Aconcagua. Located in the Alaska Range in the interior of the U.S. state of Alaska, McKinley is the centerpiece of Denali National Park and Preserve.

The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.
