8 great craft breweries to visit in Ohio

A fusion of fresh ingredients, history, and innovation is brewing creativity across the Buckeye State

By Laima Rastikis & Roadtrippers

From the state that brought the world the light bulb, the airplane, the pop-top can, and Life Savers, Ohio’s knack for fostering creativity finds its way into the many dimensions of craft beer brewing. The Buckeye State is also home to the world’s first craft beer hotel, the nation’s only production brewery housed in a museum, a brewery that sells cask beers in a box, and another that brews with the most fruit in the U.S.

Related Drink a beer and spend the night at these 8 brewery hotels across the U.S.

Ohio offers beermakers an advantage: It’s one of the states that can brew with fresh hops, grains, produce, and spices grown within its borders. From the Ohio River to Lake Erie, visitors can imbibe at hundreds of craft breweries. Craft beer enthusiasts can soak up the unpretentious Midwest brewery vibes and discover unexpected surprises, from tasty tweaks of traditional styles and brilliant brewery collaborations to experimental brews that push the envelope on tradition.

Here are eight of our favorite brewery stops in Ohio.

1. Rhinegeist Brewery

Embracing the beloved beer making tradition brought to Cincinnati by German immigrants in the 1800s, Rhinegeist Brewery launched in 2013. Helping to spark the renaissance of the city’s now-hip, historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood and Brewery District, Rhinegeist expertly bridges the gap between traditional and trendy. Available year-round, the brewery’s Cheetah Lager and Whiffle Witbier honor time-tested European styles. Meanwhile, the top-selling flagship Truth IPA delivers on the brilliance of four hop varieties. The lineup rounds out with the Cidergeist line as well as fruited sour ales (many on the lighter side of the alcohol-per-volume scale) as well as more muscular, award-winning, barrel-aged ales. For something different, schedule a Brewing Heritage Trail tour to experience nearby breweries, underground lager cellars, and more.

2. Urban Artifact

Located in the historic Saint Patrick’s Church in Cincinnati’s Northside neighborhood, Urban Artifact is a brewery, taproom, dog-friendly courtyard, pizza kitchen, music venue, and radio station. Not your grandfather’s pub, Urban Artifact crafts beers with a focus on locally caught wild yeast and bacteria, and sour tart beers, each made with loads of fruit sourced from near and far: Vietnamese lychee, Brazilian yellow mombin, Pacific Northwest berries, Michigan cherries and blueberries, and Florida citrus. In fact, Urban Artifact uses more fruit than any other brewery in the country. Choose from offerings that range from its 5-percent ABV fruit tart seltzers up to and including Astronaut Food, an explosion of blueberries that packs a punch at 15 percent ABV. Stop in to quench your thirst and listen to live music almost every night.

3. Carillon Brewing Company

Located on the Carillon Historical Park campus in Dayton, Carillon Brewing Company is the only licensed brewery in the U.S. owned by a museum that sells its product to the public—and the only U.S. brewery replicating the brewing process of the American frontier. Engage with brewers as they recreate the beers favored by the European immigrants who settled in Dayton in the 1850s. With wood as the only fuel, the period-attired brewmaster and crew expertly operate the multi-tiered, gravity-fed brewing system with no automation, using recipes found in old homemaking guides and cookbooks. Look for seasonal flavors, such as squash or spruce ales, alongside coriander ale and porter, available year-round. The food menu includes European and American fare. Admission to the brewery is free.

4. Branch & Bone Artisan Ales

When Branch & Bone announces a new beer release, Dayton beer enthusiasts mark their calendars and schedule pickups. It’s what you’d expect from a brewery named one of the 10 Best New Breweries in America by USA Today in 2020. In the taproom, you’ll find creative versions of go-to styles, such as the Campfire Candle, an 11-percent imperial milk stout described as “S’mores in a glass.” But the brewers’ ultimate passion is for the funky stuff—sours, saisons, mixed-fermentation, and alternative-fermentation beers. Indulge in something like Seasonal Friend, a carrot cake Berliner Weisse brewed with carrot juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, lactose, vanilla, and cream cheese. When suitable beer styles are available, Branch & Bone offers cask beer in a box for purchase.

5. Yellow Springs Brewery

Tucked away in the quaint and colorful village of Yellow Springs, Yellow Springs Brewery offers a different kind of taproom vibe. Here, area artists’ work decorates the space, but you won’t find a television—all the better for lively conversation and watching bicyclists rolling past the beer deck on the adjacent Little Miami Trail. Try year-round favorites such as the Boat Show India Pale Ale, featuring tropical fruit and citrus hop notes, or Captain Stardust, an eminently drinkable saison. Or look for something exotic, such as Between the Shadows, a black IPA collaboration with Branch & Bone Artisan Ales featuring rosemary and black pepper. Yellow Springs Brewery also serves wines and beermosas—a beer-based twist on the traditional brunch favorite.

6. Columbus Brewing Company

One of Ohio’s largest and oldest breweries, Columbus Brewing Company (CBC) was founded in 1988 and is known for testing the bounds of IPAs. From among the 24 taps, a good bet is the classic flagship IPA with notes of grapefruit, pine, and tropical fruit. For more hoppiness, move on to the award-winning Bodhi double IPA, which highlights Citra among a unique blend of hops. Despite its longevity, CBC isn’t resting on its laurels, but instead continues to innovate. Check out the Insane Wanderer series, a rotating experimental IPA that explores the wide spectrum of hops and what each variety brings to the flavor profile. The end goal, Volume 10 in the series, is history, but the brew master promises to continue with exciting new series developments.

A tall building with a sign that reads "Fat Head's Brewery" and a big drawing of a mostly bald man in sunglasses and a mustache

7. Fat Head’s Brewery

Fat Head’s Brewery in Middleburg Heights gives beer lovers 33 great reasons to visit—one for each of the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup medals the brewery has garnered since its founding in 2008. Start with the award-winning flagship, Head Hunter, an aggressively dry-hopped, West Coast-style IPA with flavors of pine, grapefruit, citrus, and pineapple. Or sip on Bumble Berry, the state’s number one fruit beer, for the taste of spring honey and fresh blueberries. Master brewer and co-owner Matt Cole is known for churning out batches of beer experiments with interesting new twists on hazy IPAs, barrel-aged brews, hard smoothie seltzers, European lagers, and more. Hold out for Fat Head’s if you need more than liquid nutrition. Oversized smokehouse sandwiches are the headliners, with appetizers, burgers, soups, and non-meat options as the supporting cast.

8. Great Lakes Brewing Co.

When brothers Patrick and Daniel Conway established Great Lakes Brewing Co. in 1988, they blazed a trail for dozens more craft breweries and boosted the revitalization of Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood. Start your brewery exploration with the original brews, including the 16-time medal winner Dortmunder Gold, an easy-drinking, sweet-malt and dry-hopped lager. The malty Elliott Ness amber lager was named for the Cleveland prohibition agent who became the city’s safety director. Waistline watchers will appreciate a newer release, the 105-calorie Crushworthy Lo-Cal citrus wheat ale. In season, try a Christmas Ale, an Ohio tradition with warm ginger, cinnamon, and honey flavors. Much of the produce Great Lakes uses in the brewery and restaurant comes from its plot at Pint Size Farm, an historic farm located in Cuyahoga Valley National Park .

Mapping Ohio’s Beer Trail

Exploring Ohio’s Beer Trail is a great way for beer lovers to visit some of the best breweries across the state. You can start in the lively breweries of Cleveland and then enjoy the unique tastes offered by smaller breweries in the Ohio countryside. This beer trail celebrates Ohio’s long history of beer-making and its recent boom in craft beer. You’ll find a wide range of flavors, as every brewery adds their special touch to both classic and new beer styles.

As you travel the trail, you’ll also learn a lot about the local history. Many breweries are in old buildings that have been given new life, connecting you to Ohio’s past. Plus, you can join tours that show you how beer is made, tell you about the ingredients used, and introduce you to the dedicated brewers.

Here’s a tip: don’t miss the chance to try a flight of beers at each stop so you can taste the variety. And if you’re looking for a specific recommendation, be sure to check out the Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland. They offer a selection of beers that have won awards and are a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

Cincinnati’s Craft Breweries

In Cincinnati, the local craft breweries are a highlight, offering a mix of traditional and creative beers. In the historic area of Over-the-Rhine, old buildings have been transformed into welcoming taprooms where people gather to enjoy beer and each other’s company.

Each brewery tells its own story, offering a variety of beers that go beyond the usual. For example, Rhinegeist Brewery stands out with its cool, warehouse-like look and a strong lineup of IPAs. MadTree Brewing brings together natural elements and a modern setting, creating unexpected beer flavors in a friendly atmosphere.

Cincinnati’s breweries are more than just places to grab a drink; they’re where you can really feel the passion and innovation of Ohio’s beer-making scene. Here, you can find everything from sour beers aged in barrels to fresh, light pilsners.

Columbus’s Ale Adventures

In Columbus, the craft beer scene is booming with lots of different breweries for beer lovers to try out. You can find all sorts of tastes and brewing methods. When you visit these places, you’ll see everything from modern bars to cozy, small breweries. Each place gives you a taste of carefully made beers and shows you how passionate the brewers are about their craft. You’ll find strong IPAs, deep-flavored stouts, and creative sour ales, showing how creative and committed Ohio’s beer makers are.

While you’re there, you can dive into the world of beer-making, talk to the people who know a lot about it, and even see how beer is made. It’s not just about drinking beer; you’ll learn a lot and really get to know Columbus’s exciting beer scene.

For example, if you visit the Seventh Son Brewing Company, you’ll get to experience their popular American Strong Ale and see their open brewing area where the magic happens. Or, if you’re into experimental flavors, check out Wolf’s Ridge Brewing, where they combine unique ingredients to create award-winning beers. These places aren’t just stops on a tour; they’re where you can really understand and appreciate the art of brewing.

Cleveland’s Hoppy Highlights

Cleveland is a great place for beer lovers, with many unique breweries to visit. You can start at Great Lakes Brewing Company, which is famous for making the Dortmunder Gold Lager and the delicious Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. This brewery helped start Cleveland’s love for craft beers and is a favorite spot for many.

Then there’s Market Garden Brewery, known for its large outdoor area where you can enjoy a beer. They brew a wide range of beers that reflect the hardworking spirit of the city.

Platform Beer Co. is another must-visit spot. They’re always trying out new flavors, which means you might find a beer like nothing you’ve ever tasted before.

Masthead Brewing Co. has earned praise for its New England IPA and tasty wood-fired pizzas, showing how Cleveland breweries are good at more than just making beer—they’re also great places to eat.

When you visit these breweries, you’ll see why Cleveland is known for its craft beer scene. Each one has its own style and flavors, offering something for everyone who enjoys a good beer.

Dayton’s Brewing Renaissance

Dayton’s beer-making scene is booming. A lot of new craft breweries have popped up, each offering a wide variety of beers made right here in the city. This growth is doing great things for Dayton; it’s bringing life back to old neighborhoods and giving people a sense of community pride.

For those who love beer, there’s plenty to explore. From revamped warehouses to cozy taprooms, you’ll find beers like rich stouts and refreshing ales, all with a special touch from the brewer. Many of these breweries focus on being green and using ingredients from the area. This adds up to a rich mix of flavors that really show off Dayton’s creative and hard-working side.

When you hop from one brewery to another, you’ll see and taste what makes Dayton’s beer culture so special—it’s all about high-quality beer and the skill it takes to make it.

For example, Warped Wing Brewing Company, located in a restored factory, offers a nod to Dayton’s history with its Ermal’s Belgian Style Cream Ale, while Toxic Brew Company in the Oregon District brings bold flavors with their Practice Yoga Session IPA.

Visiting these places, you’ll not only enjoy the beer but also feel the buzz of a community that’s excited about these local products.

To wrap it up, Ohio’s brewery tours really show off the state’s talent for making beer. You can see the creativity in Cincinnati’s small breweries and taste strong beers on Columbus’s ale-focused tours.

Cleveland is proud of its beer-making history and its tasty hoppy beers today. Dayton is breathing new life into the scene, promising great things for beer lovers.

These tours do more than just highlight Ohio’s commitment to top-notch and varied beer. They’re a big part of what makes the area special.

Want to toast the eclipse? These Ohio breweries are offering eclipse-themed beers

brewery tour ohio

Ohio craft breweries are jumping into eclipse mania, releasing special beers to celebrate the once-in-a-lifetime event.

But one brewery didn't need to come up with a new beer.

Maumee Bay Brewing Co. in Toledo has been offering Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout since 2009. The beer, which is available year-round and statewide on draft and in cans, is a hefty 9.1% alcohol and features roasted espresso beans from The Flying Rhino, oats and lactose.

It shouldn't come as a shock that Maumee Bay is seeing an increase in demand for Total Eclipse as the solar eclipse approaches. The eclipse will roll through Ohio on April 8, with Toledo being in the path of totality.

"We've sold double (so far) what we normally do," said Michael Martin, brewery sales manager. "People are getting excited for it."

Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout also will be featured at eclipse celebrations around Toledo. Maumee Bay is hosting a special beer pairing dinner the night before the eclipse showcasing four additional Total Eclipse Breakfast Stout variations. There are chocolate strawberry, stone fruit and cherry, chocolate peanut butter, and bourbon barrel-aged versions available on draft.

If you are looking to toast the eclipse with an Ohio-made brew, here are some others. This is not a comprehensive list:

Thirsty Dog Solar Eclipse

Thirsty Dog Brewing Co. in Akron is releasing Solar Eclipse, a Vienna lager, in 12-ounce cans and on draft. The brewery notes that it's a "once in a lifetime" beer.

Twin Oast Bean There, Seen That

Twin Oast Brewing in Catawba Island is hosting a party and releasing a coffee blonde ale called Bean There, Seen That.

"The reason we chose this style was to play on the concept of something that was simultaneously dark and light, as the eclipse will be," Twin Oast co-founder Cory Smith said. "We're planning on doing a limited canning run of this, and do the rest on draft."

Bean There, Seen That will be available in the taproom only to start, and then it will be distributed starting April 9.

"We expect a lot of people coming to our event Totality Over Twin Oast, so we want to make sure they all have a chance to pick up the beer on site," Smith said. "We always are trying to find reasons to celebrate beer, so when we heard about being in the line of totality, we knew we had to do a beer release with the event."

Phoenix Brewing releasing two eclipse beers

Phoenix Brewing Co. in Mansfield is releasing two eclipse beers.

And Then We Went Blind is a chocolate porter, with 5.8% alcohol by volume. It will be released at 3 p.m. Tuesday on draft and in to-go cans. Scott Skiver, a member of the Toledo Bavarian Sports Club, won an online auction through the Ohio Craft Brewers Association to help brew the beer. He wasn't able to make the brew day but he, along with several of his friends from the club, helped pick the name and style for the special release.

The second eclipse beer was brewed by women from Phoenix and the local community. The Total Eclipse of the Tart celebrates International Women's Day and International Women's Collaboration Brew Day, the women who work in the industry and those who support craft beer. The beer was brewed March 9.

“This batch will be really special because it’s also releasing with the eclipse," said Carmone Macfarlane, creative and marketing head for Phoenix. "The name was suggested by Alyssa Nichols, wife to brewer Ryan Nichols at the Phoenix and it was the inspiration for the recipe. Blueberry seemed like the obvious choice for fruit, and we really haven’t had a chance to brew with it often. With this being a smaller batch, it was a great opportunity to also play.”

Hoppin' Frog Brewery releasing toad-themed eclipse beer

Hoppin' Frog Brewery in Akron is releasing the amphibian-themed Toadal Eclipse, an imperial stout. The label for the 16-ounce can is a nod to one of the bestselling albums of all time.

"It's a celebration of one of my all-time favorite vinyls — Dark Side Of The Moon," owner and brewmaster Fred Karm said in an email. "When I was around 14 years old, I wore out my dad's copy and had to buy him another one. Without a job at that age, that was difficult, and memorable."

The brewery also is hosting a ticketed eclipse party from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Tasting Room , where Karm will be playing the Pink Floyd classic.

"And I am going time it perfectly, to have the song 'Time' start right when totality begins," he said. "Should be bad-ass! They did that on Spotify in 2017 when I was in Nashville for the solar eclipse, and it was mind-blowing."

Market Garden Brewery and Heinen's

Market Garden Brewery in Cleveland and the regional Heinen's grocery chain teamed up to produce Totality, a West Coast-style India pale ale.

After the 2017 eclipse, “I marked my calendar,” Market Garden co-founder Sam McNulty told the Associated Press.

Last year, McNulty’s team brewed a hazy IPA called “The Totality” to help drum up interest in the eclipse. The on-tap debut was a success, and the brewery was Heinen’s to partner for a canned collaboration.

In the coming weeks, “thousands and thousands” of cans are set to hit store shelves, McNulty said — adding they decided to go big because of how rare the event is. Cleveland won’t be in the path of totality again for a long time — not until 2444.

“I don’t want to have to wait 420 years to brew the next batch of cans,” he joked with the Associated Press. “So we made a very large one this time.”

Great Lakes Brewing releasing limited edition Blackout Stout and In the Path of Totality: 3:13PM

Great Lakes Brewing Co. in Cleveland will host an eclipse party on April 8.

The brewery is releasing a limited edition Vanilla Blackout Stout in 16-ounce, four-packs. The can features eclipse-inspired artwork. The beer, which is 10.5% alcohol by volume, will be available at the brewery gift shop and select Northeast Ohio retailers starting March 22.

The brewery also took part in the Simons Foundation's In the Path of Totality partnerships. In the Path of Totality: 3:13PM is a schwarzbier named for time of day that the solar eclipse will pass over the brewery.

Land-Grant Brewing releasing Totality Black IPA

Land-Grant Brewing in Columbus will release a collaboration beer with COSI. Totality Black IPA was made with espresso, berry and passionfruit.

The brewery is hosting an eclipse viewing party, with free eclipse glasses, food trucks and music.

Uniontown Brewing releases Totality Blood Orange Red IPA

Uniontown Brewing in Ashland is releasing Totality Blood Orange Red IPA to celebrate the eclipse.

Branch & Bone Artisan Ales releasing eclipse beers

Branch & Bone Artisan Ales in Dayton is releasing two eclipse beers: a barrel-aged adjunct stout and a hazy IPA.

The brewery isn't usually open on Mondays, but will be for the eclipse.

OU's craft beer class brews brilliance

Drinking beer for class sounds like a typical college student’s dream. At Ohio University that dream has become a fun reality for students in The Art of Craft Brewing: An Athens Case Study class, which teaches the business and chemistry of beer production.

The class is open to students over 21 no matter the major, and meets at different brewery locations or the classroom each week.

“We spent a lot of time in breweries,” Emily Thielen, a senior studying communications, said. “We’ve gone to both Jackie O’s here on campus and got full tours of the facilities. We’ve also gone to Cider House and got a tour there as well.”

The semester starts with learning the basic science, business and facilities that go into creating a craft beer. After learning the basics, the class starts on a big project: creating their own signature craft beer.

To learn the properties of brewing craft beer, the class recently completed a "off flavors” taste test where they learned what makes beer taste bad.

“There’s certain elements in the brewing process that can go wrong and give you off flavors, we were taste testing for those,” Theilen said. “It was really fun.”

Art Oestrike, the professor of the class and owner of Jackie O’s Brewery, said there are a few main components to the project.

“There is (a group who does) the actual science of the beer and the development of a beer that we came up with together,” Oestrike said. “There’s another group that’s behind the marketing and design of the product. There’s another group … that works on how to market toward people in their early 20s and then there’s the people who are focusing on the event to launch this beer.”

Oestrike has taught off-and-on at OU for about 20 years. He started teaching the class with his friend as an adjunct professor and continued the course due to support. Oestrike said as an entrepreneur and professor, the class molds his hobby and career into one, and teaching this class is “pretty awesome.”

The class-crafted beer this semester is named “SakOUra Sunset” and features tastes of cherry, apricot and peach. It will make its debut Thursday right before Mom's Weekend kicks off.

SakOUra Sunset Photo-6.jpg

The process of brewing the beer, however, began a few weeks ago. Jonah Brautigam, a senior studying electrical engineering, was present for the brewing day the class had at Jackie O’s Brewery and broke down the process.

“We took about 500 pounds of fresh rolled barley and wheat and put it into a simmering tank of water,“ Brautigam said. "We let that sit and pull all the sugars out of it. Then, once we knew all the sugars were out, we moved all that sugar water, called wort, to a kettle where we boiled it … Once that was boiling, we started adding hops and different stuff to it to add flavor … We cooked it for about an hour.”

Despite the lengthy process, all the hard work from the class created a final result everyone can share.

“Since we are making a fruit wheat ale, we brought it down to 50 degrees and then put it in the fermentation tank, where the yeast is added,” Brautigam said. “We had to wait about a day for the wort to fully ferment.”

When the brewing process seems like it’s over, it’s time to add some flavor. After allowing the yeast to do its job, Brautigam said they went back to add the fruit.

“We took the fruit puree and put that into the tank and it basically fermented again,” Brautigam said. “Then, we have to wait another week to make sure the fermentation is right, then we dump it and put it into a cooling tank.”

The launch party for the class’s SakOUra Sunset craft beer debuts at Jackie O’s Uptown Brewpub, located at 24 W. Union St., Thursday starting at 7:30 p.m. The class encourages students of age and staff to come and enjoy their beer.
