So not surprisingly, the Permuteran Bay Festival is a celebration of not only culture and the arts. For example, there will be cultural and musical performances,  a ature fun run, a food bazaar, a yoga festival, children’s entertainment, a photo hunt, and more.

In addition, there is a strong environmental element.  For example, there will be a fishing contest, a biorock workshop, an art trash workshop, and a reef restoration project.

Tumpek Wayang  – 25 November 2023

Tumpek Wayang is the sixth day in the Tumpek cycle . And it is the day puppeteers honour the Puppet God . Interestingly, it is considered inauspicious for a baby to be born on this day. When this happens, puppeteers perform a purification ceremony to protect them from harm.

Tumpek Wayang is one  of the six auspicious days on the Balinese Pawukon Calendar . These days occur when the fifth day of the five-day Balinese week falls on a Saturday. And this happens every 35 days. In fact, it takes 210 days to complete the cycle. To clarify, the Balinese Pawukon Year  has 210 days.

The jungle and rice paddies thrive in this season — and the magnificent green color and sprouting vegetation are worth seeing.

You'll summit the active volcano as the sun rises, and depending on your guide, you may even be treated to eggs boiled in the volcanic steam at the top of Mount Batur. Bali Dry Season

The dry season is the best time to visit Bali when it comes to the weather because for half of the year you can expect beautiful clear skies and almost no rainfall.

The dry season in Bali runs from May to October, although this can vary each year. The peak months are the height of the Balinese winter, which is June, July, and August.

May in Bali

May is the start of the official dry season in Bali, but you can still expect a mixed bag when it comes to the weather.

One year it could be raining all through May but the next it can be dry from as early as April. 

If it does rain in May though it’s guaranteed to just be a few light showers, and this is the best time to visit before you hit the high season from June to August.

Prices will be lower in May and with the better weather, it’s a good time to start diving and snorkeling, as the water visibility clears up.

It’s getting cooler too and less humid, so a hike to the summit of Bali’s mysterious volcano, Mount Batur, can be a great activity in May, as you’ll miss the crowds and enjoy better conditions for hiking. 

June in Bali

June is the start of the high season in Bali, although it’s not quite as busy a month as July and August. The weather is likely to be perfect with temperatures averaging in the mid-twenties and humidity low. 

You’ll have to be really unlucky to see even a light rain shower, so it’s a great time to hit up the beaches and make the most of the clear skies and sunshine. 

Prices start to climb in June, but you’ll miss the worst of the high season which picks up towards the end of the month when the European summer holidays begin in earnest. 

In June you should visit the more touristy attractions such as the famous temples in the south – Uluwatu for instance – or the increasingly popular Nusa Islands before the summer crowds make their appearance. 

July in Bali

July is usually the busiest month to visit Bali, but for good reason, and that’s because you’ll be enjoying the best weather of the year. 

But as well as enjoying sunny, clear skies and zero rain, you’ll be sharing the beaches and resorts with hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers. People flock here from Europe, America and more than anywhere else, from Australia. 

Prices will be higher for flights and hotels, but if you do want to escape the crowds then head north.

This is a great time to experience a side of Bali that most miss, and by exploring the black sand beaches of Amed or the coast and jungle of Bali Barat National Park, you’ll see how the south of Bali was a few decades previously. 

August in Bali

Much like July, August is always super busy in Bali. The weather is again beautiful, with clear skies and sunny days, and it’s a great time for lounging on beaches and drinking cold Bintang Beers. 

If you want to escape the holiday crowds though then plan a trip north, and visit the beautiful coastline in more rustic destinations such as Lovina or Amed, where tourism has only recently begun to develop.

There are great snorkeling and diving up north too, including some famous shipwrecks, and as it’s the height of the dry season the water will be beautifully clear.

September in Bali

September can be the best time to visit Bali if you want a great mix of good weather and smaller crowds. 

Things will still be busy and flights will be more expensive than the later shoulder season months. But you’ll save money compared to the true high season and have fewer people around when you explore touristy destinations such as Ubud, Kuta or the Nusa Islands. 

October in Bali

October is a great shoulder season month, but the dry weather is coming to a close. There are more and more rainy days, but these can be unpredictable.

If you’re in Bali for two weeks, you’ll most likely have enough dry days to make the most of your visit. 

Enjoy the south and the more traditional beach areas, get cultural in Ubud or escape to the north to see a wilder side of the island. 

Bali Wet Season 

The wet season in Bali runs from November through to April, corresponding with the southern hemisphere summer and fall.

It’s tropical, and that means that while it does rain hard when it rains, showers and storms are brief but fierce.

The rainy season can be a great time to miss the crowds but give December and January a miss because these two months are still incredibly popular despite the wet weather. 

November in Bali

November is when the rainy season starts in Bali, but just how much rain there will be, can vary.

You’ll have good odds of having lovely sunny days still, and it’s a great time to visit because you’ll miss the Christmas crowds who are just around the corner.

December in Bali

December is usually the rainiest month of the year, and weather-wise, this really is not the best time to visit Bali. 

The tourist crowds would beg to differ though because while you might get soaked, it’s also incredibly warm still.

That draws over the Christmas crowds seeking winter sun from Europe and North America , and it still brings over the Aussie crowds looking for a cheap getaway. 

It’s a lively time to be in Bali, and it’s not a bad place at all to spend Christmas and New Year, but be prepared for high prices and lots of other travelers and tourists. 

January in Bali

January can be just as busy as December and unfortunately, just as rainy. This is the height of the wet season, but again, it doesn’t put off the crowds. 

If you do visit, then the southern beaches and classic resort areas are best avoided. Head north instead, and find a bit more peace and quiet in the lesser-visited parts of Bali.

February in Bali

In February, the weather starts to cool down slightly and the rainy days begin to disappear, but it’s still very much the wet season. 

It’s a great shoulder season month, right after the Christmas crowds go home, and you can enjoy many of Bali’s best sights with fewer people around. 

Head to the waterfalls, as they will be in their element, and the jungle will be lush and green from all the rainfall over the last few months. 

March in Bali

March can be a wet month or it can be a dry month, the weather gods in Bali are unpredictable this time of the year. 

It will be a quiet month on the tourism front though and that makes it the best time to visit Bali if you’re a fan of shoulder season travel. 

The Christmas and New Year crowds are long gone, and the dry season tourists are a few months away.

You can get great deals on flights and resorts if you book in advance, and you’ll find that lots of beach areas in the south such as Kuta, Seminyak or Canggu are quieter.

This is Bali though, so if you’re here for the social aspects then there are always other travelers around to hang out with. 

April in Bali

April is a great shoulder month, but be careful of the Easter Holidays in Australia or Europe, as Bali becomes a popular holiday break destination during this time of the year. 

You could enjoy almost all sunny days or conversely it could also rain a lot, but that’s the gamble in April as the rainy season draws to a close. 

It’s the tail end of the wet season though and Bali will be blooming, making this a great month to visit the waterfalls and the rice paddies before they start to dry out again.

Visit Ubud for cultural festivals and then hike through the rice terraces nearby.

The Balinese calendar is filled with sacred Hindu Tumpek days – in which different subjects or objects are blessed. There’s Tumpek Kuningan which celebrates ancestral spirits, Tumpek Landep for blessings tools and precious metals, and Tumpek Udu for plants. Tumpek Wayang, which falls on November 25, 2023, honours the art of shadow puppetry and the Lord of Puppeteers – Sanghyang Iswara. On this special day, puppeteers will perform purification rites on themselves, and their puppets ( wayang kulit ) followed by sacred puppet shows right across the island. 3. Pemuteran Bay Festival

Taking place from 16- 18 November 2023, this community-based festival combines culture with conservation, with three days of food, music and cultural performances, as well as fascinating bio-rock and reef gardening workshops. Ancient reefs blown apart by dynamite fishing in the 90s have been rejuvenated by a revolutionary technology called Bio Rock, which uses electric currents to stimulate the growth of coral. Snorkelers and divers can explore close to fifty large structures shaped in the form of a caterpillar, whale, igloo, dome, flower and a goddess, all covered in a profusion of brightly coloured coral.

Bali’s north-east coast is also home to beautiful reefs inhabited by sea horses, giant trevally, schools of barracuda, clown frog fish, turtles and a diverse range of hard and soft coral. Holidays in Bali in November are suitable for travelers who want to enjoy the warmth at a reasonable price, while avoiding crowds of tourists, and also get to know the culture and history of the island.

In this article we will tell you about the features of a holiday in Bali in November and tell you how to organize the most enjoyable pastime.

Weather in Bali in November

November in Bali is the beginning of the rainy season. This period is characterized by increased air humidity and short, heavy showers, which often pass quickly and give way to sunny days. Starting from mid-November, the probability of rain increases, and towards the end of the month the amount of precipitation increases. However, the mountainous areas of Bali are usually cooler and rainier than the coast. Despite the precipitation, in November in Bali you can enjoy a beach holiday and admire the lush tropical greenery, the colors of which become especially bright during the rainy season.

When going to Bali during the rainy season, you need to be prepared to see an increased amount of garbage on some beaches. But, as a rule, they try to remove it.

As for temperatures, thanks to the tropical climate they are relatively stable throughout the year, and in November they are:

• Air temperature during the day : 28-30°C
• Air temperature at night : about 23-24°C
• Water temperature : about 28°C

November is the off-season period, which is good for travelers on a budget. Here are the approximate prices for accommodation in popular tourist areas:

• Grand Mirage Resort and Thalasso Bali ( Nusa Dua ) is another 5-star beach resort located in the popular tourist area of Noosa Dua and offering all inclusive service. It offers a private beach area, beautiful rooms, generous menus at 6 restaurants, and plenty of entertainment options - starting at $111.
• Kupu-Kupu Barong Villas & Spa by L'Occitane ( Ubud ) is a tropical-themed 5-star hotel with luxury villas, named after the giant butterfly, a symbol of the beauty of Balinese art, culture and design. The distance from the beach is compensated by magnificent views of the Ayung River and dense forests. This is the only resort with a harbor on the Ayung River, from where you can go on a free rafting trip - from $150.
• Hilton Bali Resort ( Noosa Dua ) is a luxurious 5-star hotel for fans of the famous chain. There are 4 restaurants, 4 swimming pools, a 30-meter water slide, several tennis courts, a white sand beach, a good spa, a kids' club and other components of a 5-star holiday - from $218.

What to do in Bali in November

During the rainy season, you can spend time at the spa or gym, do yoga, explore the menu of bars and gastronomic establishments, or take cooking classes at the hotel.

And when short-term bad weather gives way to sunny days, you can spend time on one of the many Balinese beaches or find other activities to suit your taste. Let's give some examples of them.

Diving in Bali is possible all year round. During the wet season, visibility may be more limited than during the dry season, but this will not prevent encounters with reef sharks, dolphins and other marine life, as well as dives of the Liberty and Boga ( Kubu ) wrecks at Tulamben, the Japanese wreck at Amed and visiting other equally interesting locations.

Visiting temples

The island of Bali is famous not only for its beautiful nature, but also for its large number of Hindu temples ( pura ), which attract tourists with their unusual architecture. The island is home to many religious buildings, which are architectural monuments reflecting the thousand-year history of Balinese culture. The most famous of them are Besakih Temple, Tirta Empul, Tanah Lot and Uluwatu - offer the opportunity to experience the history of Bali and get acquainted with the culture and customs of the island. While visiting the temples, you will learn about some of the traditional Balinese rituals, enjoy beautiful tropical sunsets and dance performances.

Bali Safari and Marine Park

If you want to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the wild, but do it as safely as possible, then the Bali Safari Park is exactly what you need.

The park is located approximately 30 kilometers from Kuta. More than 1,000 species of animals are represented here, including the famous " Komodo dragons ". Ride through the park by jeep or special bus, go on an elephant ride, watch animals in their natural habitat, grab a bite to eat at Asia's first African restaurant, visit the water play area and watch a traditional Balinese show during this exciting adventure.

Entrance fees to the park start at IDR 620,000 or $40 per person.

Monkey sanctuary in Ubud

The Sacred Monkey Forest is a nature reserve that is home to several hundred primates. Visitors will have an extraordinary experience interacting with these energetic animals. However, keep in mind that even though the monkeys may seem friendly, travelers may encounter unexpected problems, such as theft of personal items or bites. To ensure a safe stay in the reserve, it is recommended to carefully monitor your belongings and refrain from feeding or direct contact with animals.

Water park in Kuta

Built about 30 years ago in the popular resort area of Kuta, today Waterbom Bali covers 3.8 hectares of land and is one of the best water parks in Southeast Asia.

The park offers a range of services and entertainment for the whole family, including 22 slides of varying difficulty levels that meet international safety standards, a wide selection of dishes in the park's restaurants and eateries, and private gazebos that can be rented and spent time with friends and family. Access to storage lockers and towels are available for an additional fee. There is a medical aid station.

It is worth noting that the entire infrastructure of the water park is thoughtfully designed around the existing flora and fauna, and does not cause damage to the environment.

• IDR 385,000 (about $26) for children 2-11 years old;
• IDR 535,000 (about $36) for adults;
• IDR 1,690,000 (approx. $113) for a family of 2 adults and 2 children.

Walking around the mall is one of the best ways for shopping lovers to spend time on a rainy day. After all, here you can not only enjoy shopping, but also visit a cinema, attractions, and, of course, have a snack.

The most popular shopping centers are concentrated around the tourist areas of Kuta and Seminyak. These include:

Bali makes an excellent destination for vacationers year-round. However, each season has unique draws and drawbacks. We’re going over exactly what to expect in each season to help you determine the best time to visit Bali for YOU!

Bali technically sits below the equator in the southern hemisphere (exactly 8° south of the equator if you want to get precise). Which means the seasons are opposite those of the Northern Hemisphere.

However, Bali has a warm, tropical climate all year round. This means they don’t experience the same changing of the seasons like you would see in say  New Zealand .

Temperatures in Bali don’t fluctuate much throughout the year. The two distinct seasons in Bali are simply the rainy season and the dry season . Otherwise known as the busy tourism season, and the even busier tourism season. 

This may sound pretty straight forward… you want to visit during the dry season right?? Well, we think the answer is just a bit more complicated than that.

There are pros and cons to visiting during both seasons and as with any destination, the weather is never as predictable as we’d like it to be.

So this begs the question…

When is the best time of year to visit Bali?

In short, you’ll have the best chance of comfortable weather during the peak of the dry season, June – August. We’d recommend to avoid visiting during the December holidays as not only is this peak rainy season, but crowds are also heavy. 

Our personal pick would be to visit Bali during the shoulder months, May, June or September, to avoid the rain and the crowds. But more on that later…

Truthfully, as with all questions of this nature, there is no correct answer. Bali makes an excellent destination for vacationers and digital nomads all year round. Each season has its own unique draws (and  drawbacks  too).

But fear not…

Our experience in Bali 

We’ve visited Bali for multiple month stretches during the the spring, summer & fall months

When: August (2015), mid-August – mid-November (2018), June – August (2019), March – April (2023)

Our experience:

• The rainy season was prolonged a bit further into April than usual in 2023, but the sun still came out daily
• It was noticeably more humid in March than in April
• Observing Neyepi (the Balinese day of silence) in Bali was an interesting experience as no one was allowed to leave the home and we couldn’t turn on the lights after dark (around 6:30 p.m.)

Would we recommend visiting Bali in spring? 

Mostly, yes. As long as you don’t mind a bit of rain and humidity, visiting during the shoulder season means less crowds than in summertime. Most activities are enjoyable year round in Bali. 

• We experienced pretty dry, warm weather in the summer months with lots of sunshine
• The ocean temperatures are warmer in the winter and spring than in the summertime
• We were able to go scuba diving in Amed with just a shorty wetsuit
• The popular tourist hubs like Canggu and Ubud are very busy during the summer and traffic can be quite chaotic

Would we recommend visiting Bali in the summer? 

Yes! The weather in Bali is at its best during the summer months of the northern hemisphere. Even though the summer draws more crowds (mostly vacationers from Australia who are fleeing the winter down under), it’s worth it to experience the best weather possible. 

• October is known as one of the last months of the dry season, with humidity building until the rainy season begins (typically November – April). 
• Personally, we didn’t notice the humidity getting much worse during our stay from August through November, and we don’t remember any rain during this period.
• We had great weather, clear skies, and beachy temperatures during our stay.
• We did leave Bali in mid-November (for a trip to New Zealand ), so we missed the rainy season.
• It seemed that the fall crowds of foreigners were mainly digital nomads and expats, rather than people on vacation, which you’ll see more of in the summer months.

Would we recommend visiting Bali in the fall? 

Yes, we’d recommend early fall. If possible, try to visit between September and early to mid-November so you can avoid the rainy season.

Bali is a small island in Southeast Asia between the Indian and the Pacific oceans. As one of the 17,000+ islands that make up the nation of Indonesia , Bali is commonly the most recognized and easily the most visited by tourists.

The volcanic island is made up of peaks, some of which rise over 3,000 meters (almost 10,000 ft high!). And some are still active. In fact, recent eruptions in the past few years have been known to cause flight delays and cancelations due to ash in the air.

Bali’s volcanic nature, combined with the mountain peaks that bring rain, contribute to it’s lush greenery and exceptional fertility . Rice is the most common crop grown on Bali and you’ll see evidence everywhere you go with terracing rice fields making beautiful backdrops in your photos.

Since Bali is so close to the equator, the daylight hours are pretty consistent year round . The longest day of the year is 12.5 hours and the shortest day of the year is 11.5 hours. This makes the sunrise and sunset pretty consistent around 6 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. daily.

As we mentioned above, Bali predominantly has two distinct seasons: the rainy season and the dry season . Being in a tropical climate, humidity and precipitation are the only patterns that really change with the season. Daytime temperatures hover between mid-70s to mid-80s ( ° F) throughout the year.

At just about 3,500 sq. miles (5,632 km² to be exact), the island is fairly small and weather doesn’t vary much from coast to coast. However, the volcanic peaks that make up the center of the island will have consistently cooler temperatures and more rainfall than the lower coastal areas.

Dry Season in Bali

Temptation to escape the winter months in the southern hemisphere, combined with little rain and lower humidity in Bali makes the dry season a very crowded time to visit. The is particularly true for the winter months of June – August.

Accommodation can also be hard to come by with so many tourists on holiday, so it’s a good idea to book in advance if you plan to visit during Bali during this time of year.

Dry season months at a glance

April:  The island tends to see the warmest temps during April. The Easter holiday week is a busy time in Bali, but the rest of the month tends to see more “shoulder season” traffic.

• Average daily temp: 77-94° F (25-34° C)

May:  Moving into the “shoulder season” for tourism, May is still very hot but humidity is going down.

• Average daily temp: 75-92° F (24-33° C)

June:  The first month of the winter in the Southern hemisphere, and temperatures continue to drop. June is on the edge of “shoulder season” and peak tourism near the end of the month.

• Average daily temp: 72-89° F (22-32° C)

July:  Tourism spikes during the month of July and prices for accommodation may jump as much as 50%. You should book accommodation early if you plan to visit during July as places tend to book up quickly.

• Average daily temp: 73-87° F (23-31° C)

August:  Bali typically has coolest temperatures of the year during the month of August. The peak of tourism runs through August and accommodation prices stay as high as they were in July. Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated on Aug 17th.

• Average daily temp: 72-85° F (22-29° C)

September:  Tourism drops off just a bit after August as September is the first month of the typical “shoulder season” in Bali. 

• Average daily temp: 73-89° F (23-32° C)

October:  Temperatures are beginning to rise, but it’s still fairly dry with less humidity. Crowds are slightly thinner during this month.

• Average daily temp: 75-93° F (24-34° C)

Best places to visit during dry season in Bali

• Amed :  the popular diving region on Bali’s east coast, home to the famous USAT Liberty Shipwreck. Just a 2 hour drive from Denpasar.
• Off-the-beaten-track destinations such as  Sideman : a 45 min drive from Ubud, beautiful laidback countryside filled with rolling hills and rice terraces
• Get away to the nearby islands such as  Nusa Penida,  Lombok  (which includes the famous Gili Islands), or  Flores . 

Best things to do during dry season in Bali

• The weather during dry season is ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, biking, sailing, etc. 
• Try a new water sport such as surfing or diving
• Hike Mount Batur at sunrise
• Do a bike tour of the Balinese country-side with  Ring a Bike Tour  (and be sure to tell Ring that Two Wandering Soles sent you!)
• Bali Arts Festival (2nd Saturday of June – mid-July)
• Bali Kites Festival (Jul-Aug)

Cons of visiting Bali during the dry season

• Peak tourism season (particularly July/Aug)
• Hotel prices spike in July/Aug
• Traffic gets pretty crazy in Bali (all the time) but especially so in the major tourism areas such as Kuta and North Kuta during the high season. More tourists on the roads mean a higher chance for accidents from people driving in unfamiliar territory. 
• Major tourist attractions such as temples and parks will be very crowded 

What to pack for Bali during the dry season

• Good hiking/walking shoes (we recommend  Chacos sandals  as they are perfect for hiking, and lighter than hiking boots)
• Reef safe sunscreen
• Optional: Surfboard or diving gear

Rainy Season in Bali

During the rainy season in Bali, the weather is more inconsistent. Downpours can span for days, or dissipate after just an hour.

Temperatures are at their highest during this time of year in Bali and with the frequent precipitation comes high humidity as well. Insects, as we know, love humidity, so be prepared to fight off swarms of mosquitos!

Bali is pretty full of tourists all year round, however, this is technically “low season” for tourism because of the rain and humidity. Even during the rainy season though, you’re likely to get sunshine in between showers. 

Rainy season months at a glance

November:  You may be tempted to beat the rising November heat by swimming, surfing or diving in Bali. However, it’s a good thing to keep in mind that the sea is usually roughest during November.

• Average daily temp: 74-91° F (23-33° C)

December:  Bali is typically most crowded over the Christmas/New Years holidays. Prices will spike over the holidays as foreigners come to celebrate while on vacation. Accommodation over the holidays will be pricy and fill up fast. However, the rest of the month is relatively less crowded.

January:  The least crowded month in Bali, but also the month with the most rainfall. January typically sees very few days without at least a drizzle. That being said, even during rainy season, the skies dry out every once in a while.

February:  Between low and “shoulder season,” February is still quite hot and humid. However, with the frequent precipitation you’re likely to see slightly less tourists.

• Average daily temp: 76-92° F (24-33° C)

March:  Crowds start building as it’s spring break in the northern hemisphere and people are starting to filter in for the dry season. Nyepi, the Balinese New Year, falls in March. It is important to be aware of this date because the Balinese Hindu people celebrate this day with a day of silence. For a full 24 hours, everyone (even tourists) is expected to remain indoors and no noise is permitted. Beaches and businesses are closed down for the day, including the international airport. So this will definitely affect your trip if you are planning to visit Bali in March. 

Best places to visit during rainy season in Bali

• Tannah Lot Temple  – be sure to visit during low tide so you can walk out to the entrance of the temple and be blessed with the spring water that flows from the temple and is considered holy. 
• Uluwatu Temple  – Watch out for the moneys here! They are everywhere and very sneaky. Make sure you have your bags zipped and close to your body at all times. Put sunglasses and anything loose into your bags while here, or those moneys may just try to rob you. If you are holding a phone or camera, make sure you keep a good grip on it and hold it close to your body when not in use. 

• Ubud Monkey Forest  – one of the most popular attractions in Ubud is a good place to visit during low season, particularly if you go while it’s drizzling out. (See our note about watching out for monkeys above as they are prone to swipping here as well.)
• Sekumpul Waterfall  – Often referred to as the most beautiful waterfall in Bali, we tend to agree!
• Banyumala Twin Falls  – This stunning waterfall doesn’t always have enough water flow, so it’d best to visit during rainy season to ensure an epic view.

Best things to do during rainy season in Bali

• Try a  cooking class
• Devdan Dance and Music Show
• Balinese massage, or go full-out and pamper yourself with a spa day!
• Craft-making workshop (such as a  Batik class  or  soap carving workshop )
• Take a yoga class (we recommend The Practice in Canggu or Yoga Barn in Ubud)
• Nusa Dua Festival (Oct-Nov)
• Mekepung Buffalo races (held in Negara during the fall)

Pros of visiting Bali during the rainy season

• High humidity/high temps deter some tourists from visiting during this time, so Bali tends to be less crowded.
• Typical tourist attractions such as temples and beaches will be less crowded than in busy season.
• Traffic on the roads won’t be quite as busy as the typical hustle and bustle of high season.
• Bali’s weather is still fairly sunny, even during the rainy season you’ll usually see sunny skies for at least part of the day.

Cons of visiting Bali during the rainy season

• Higher chance of rain – as often as daily in January
• High temperatures and high humidity
• Mosquitos…eek!
• Decreased visibility at dive sites due to weather

What to pack for Bali during the rainy season

• bug repellant  (solids are the way to go)
• rubber flip flops
• light, loose fitting, breathable clothing

In our opinion, the best time to visit Bali would be during the “shoulder season” months of May, June or September. Here are our primary reasons for choosing this time:

• Room prices are not at peak rates (usually 30-50% lower)
• Weather is dry and less humid than peak of rainy season
• Not too crowded
• Good sea conditions for diving/surfing/snorkeling
• Reasonable airfare can be found (Hint: Use these  hacks for booking cheap flights !)
• Promotional sales in shops on the island

We’d recommend to avoid visiting during the December holidays as not only is this peak rainy season, but crowds are also heavy.

Bali In November 2023: Things To Do Weather & Temperature

In November, the rainy season begins in Bali. From April to October, during the dry season in Bali, crowds are at every turn.

The beaches are full. The prices are high, crowds around the numerous temples, and the best accommodation is pre-booked and occupied.

Because of all this, November is an excellent choice for visiting Bali.

If you visit this island in November, you can enjoy everything this fantastic mass tourism destination offers without crowds.

In Bali in November, you can stay in luxury accommodation at much more favorable prices, and plane tickets will be cheaper.

The weather in Bali is almost without temperature differences throughout the year because the island is located near the equator in the tropical climate zone, so there is no change of seasons.

The only difference during the year is the division into months with more rain and months with less precipitation.

In the rainy season, which lasts from November to March, it rains in short-lived strong showers.

The rainiest month of the year is January, with twenty rainy days, and November has thirteen rainy days.

In November, the days are sunny, with an average of eight hours of sunshine.

The daytime temperatures are pleasant, and the maximum average is around thirty degrees Celsius, while the minimum night temperatures are only three degrees lower and amount to twenty-seven degrees Celsius.

The sea temperature is twenty-seven degrees Celsius and is ideal for swimming.

With the option of staying in one of the now legendary luxury hotels and resorts close to the magical Balinese beaches, there’s no reason to let the occasional downpour spoil your fun.

Parks in Bali

The beauty and diversity of Bali’s nature are astounding. On this island, you can take a peek into the world of Southeast Asian flora and fauna.

We will only suggest a few parks out of the many places available in Bali to visit, but all of these parks spread across the island will give you an insight into the diversity and richness of flora and fauna in all parts Bali.

South Bali is recognizable for its tropical flowers, while in the north, there are perennial coniferous trees and in the east deciduous woods.

Botanical Garden Bali

Botanical Garden Bali is located in central Bali in the mountain district of Bedugul, about forty kilometers from Ubud.

Botanical Garden Bali occupies one hundred and fifty-seven hectares of landscaped areas and is the largest botanical garden in Indonesia.

More than half a million visitors visit this exceptional botanical garden every year.

Many species of rare tropical plants grow in the Bali Botanical Garden, and it is known for its rich collection of orchids.

The entire area is located on the slopes of Tapak Hill.

Bali Bird and Reptile Park

Bali Bird and Reptile Park is located only thirteen kilometers from the capital of Bali, Denpasar.

The park is divided into seven units. In the Bali Bird and Reptile Park, in addition to birds from Bali, there are also birds that live in Sumatra, Java, Papua New Guinea, and Borneo. Still, there are also those from South America and Africa.

Bali Barat National Park

Bali Barat National Park is located at the back of the island. This national park encompasses both land and water.

More than two hundred species of rare animals and birds are estimated to live in this national park.

The area occupied by Bali Barat National Park is one hundred and ninety square kilometers.

There are different ecosystems in that territory: mountains, plains, tropical forests, and savannas. Along the coast are mangrove forests and coral reefs around which marine life flourishes.

Bali Barat National Park was founded in 1950, and its formation began fifty years earlier.

With the existence of this national park, much has been done to preserve many endangered species, especially the Balinese starling, the island’s symbol.

Bali Safari and Marine Park

Bali Safari and Marine Park are located in Gianyar, about forty minutes from Denpasar.

Bali Safari and Marine Park occupies forty hectares of land and is among Indonesia’s largest wildlife and bird parks.

About one hundred species of animals from different parts of Indonesia, as well as India and Africa, live distributed in several sectors: Sector of leopards and cheetahs; area of birds; sector of tigers, herbivores, and reptiles; elephant zone and aquarium.

Touring Bali Safari and Marine Park is completely safe because visitors are always driven through the park in special buses and vehicles protected by bars.

There are special locations in the park where tigers or lions sometimes jump onto the roof of the vehicle in which the visitors are.

In the Bali Safari and Marine Park, there is also a Waterpark and a traditional Balinese village, and performances are held in which elephants participate.

The park has a restaurant with a spectacular view of the jungle.

Bali Zoo is located near Ubud. African lions, crocodiles, Kalimantan orangutans, deer, and Malayan bears, but also the smallest species of tiger in the world, the endangered Sumatran tiger, live in this zoo.

Bali Elephant Park

Bali Elephant Park is located about eighteen kilometers from Ubud.

In this park, located in the middle of a tropical forest, Sumatran elephants live in a natural environment.

Visitors are also offered attractions such as brushing the back of a bathing elephant or feeding elephants and their calves.

The elephants in this park are completely relaxed and do not pay much attention to visitors, so it is an opportunity to observe them up close as they walk, eat, smoke, or bathe.

The Sumatran elephant is an endangered species, and this park is one of their last refuges.

On the park’s territory, there is a restaurant, a souvenir shop, a museum, and a gallery.

The most interesting souvenirs are pictures drawn by elephants.

Lakes in Bali

Water is very important in Balinese Hinduism, and four Balinese lakes are considered sacred places: Lake Buyan, Lake Beratan, Lake Tamblingan, and Lake Batur.

Lake Batur covers about sixteen square kilometers and is the largest lake in Bali.

This lake is located at the foot of Mount Batur. Hills and traditional villages surround it.

Lake Batur is located at an altitude above a thousand meters.

At the very edge of the lake is the Pura Segara Ulun Danu Batur temple.

Translated from Balinese, the name of this temple means water temple on Batur Lake.

Next to this temple is the Pura Jati temple.

According to a Balinese legend, Lake Batur was once dug by the giant Kebo Iwo, who lived in that area.

Toya Bungkah Hot Spring is located near Lake Batur in the village of Pekraman Batur.

At Toya Bungkah Hot Spring, you can enjoy four pools: a hot tub for children, a natural hot water pool, an outdoor Floating Sunburn pool, and a swimming pool. In this complex, there is also a restaurant whose menu includes traditional Balinese dishes.

Lake Beratan

Lake Beratan is located near Mount Catur next to the village of Petang, at 1239 meters above sea level.

On the lake’s western side is the Pura Ulun Danu Beratan. This temple is dedicated to Devi Danu, the goddess of water, lakes, and rivers.

Lake Buyan is located at an altitude of one thousand meters, twenty kilometers south of Singaray, Sukasada district.

Lake Buyan and neighboring Lake Tamblingan are called the Twin Lakes of North Bali. Both of these lakes are located in the protected nature reserve of Batukaru.

Lake Buyan is surrounded by pristine indigenous flora and fauna.

Lake Tamblingan

Lake Tamblingan is located north of Mount Lesong, in the village of Munduk, and west of Lake Buyan.

These two lakes are separated only by a thin strip of several hundred meters of green forest.

The Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan Temple is located on Lake Tamblingan.

Besides the beautiful lush tropical forests, there are coffee and clove plantations around Lake Tamblingan.

Rivers in Bali

There are many tours on offer in Bali that include hiking along the paths that follow the river courses, but also, many rivers in Bali can be navigated in boats.

Rivers running through dense rainforests have always been the main roads.

Settlements and temples sprang up on their banks, and the rivers were worshiped and held a sacred place in Balinese culture and religion.

Following the rivers, you will discover the hidden beauties of Bali, such as Beji Guwang Canyon, located in Gianyar Regency.

The walls of this canyon are decorated with natural carvings that leave you breathless.

Ayung River

Ayung River is among the longest rivers in Bali. It originates in the seven mountain ranges and passes through Bangli, Badung, and Gianyar regencies.

Ayung River mouth is in Badung Strait near Sanur at Padanggalak Beach.

Its source near the Kintamani Ayung River flows 68.5 kilometers to the south of the island.

Three major tributaries feed the Ayung River with water: Tukad Bangkung, Tukad Menggan, and Tukad Siap.

About sixty minutes away from Ubud in the village of Plaga, Petang District, Badung Regency, is the Tukad Bangkung Bridge. This bridge is a special tourist attraction because of the beautiful panoramic views of the valley and the green hills.

This is a favorite location for the Balinese to visit as a family during holidays, such as Galungan and Kuningan.

Galungan is a specific Balinese celebration of the victory of good over evil. During this holiday, the Balinese believe that the spirits of ancestors and deceased relatives visit the land. The hallmark of this celebration is the bamboo poles placed along all the roads.

Galungan is a joyous holiday during which the Balinese visit temples and places like Tukad Bangkung Bridge where, due to the magical natural environment, the spirit of this celebration is manifested in the best way, which is connecting with God.

Kuningan marks the end of the visit of the deceased to their former homes and is the last day of the holiday.

Tukad Bangkung Bridge is among the highest bridges in Asia. It is 360 meters long and almost ten meters wide. The highest pillars reach seventy meters.

Near Tukad Bangkung Bridge in Belok Sidan Village, Petang District is Penikit Waterfall. The village of Belok Sidan has vast fields of marigolds, so the very arrival to this authentic Balinese village is real magic.

On the surrounding hills near the village of Belok Sidan, there are endless terraces of rice fields, and the village itself is located on a plateau.

The Penikit waterfall is also called a cold-hot waterfall because there are two springs: one is a source of cold water, and the other is hot.

There are many other hot springs in the vicinity of the waterfall.

Penikat Waterfall is hidden at the bottom of an idyllic valley surrounded by the shade of forest greenery.

Nungnung Waterfall is located between Bedugul and Ubud. A jungle surrounds this waterfall, and it is reached by a staircase that has over five hundred steps.

Nungnung waterfall is located about nine hundred meters above sea level near the village of Nungnung, about thirty-five kilometers from Ubud.

Rafting is the best way to get to know nature in Bali, and the course of the Ayung River in the vicinity of Ubud offers excellent conditions for this type of enjoyment.

While sailing the Ayung River, you can enjoy the rainforest, see some wildlife, and pass by perfect landscapes such as rice paddies or hidden waterfalls.

Ayung River near Ubud is suitable for rafting all year round.

Sungi River

The Sungi River rises in the mountainous part of central-northern Bali and flows into the sea west of Kerobokan Kelod. Its course mainly determines the eastern border of Tabanan Regency.

The Sungi River passes by the ancient town of Mengwi, which was once the capital of Bali. Mengwi is located about eighteen kilometers from Denpasar.

Telaga Waja River

Telaga Waja River is a small river that originates in Mount Abang and flows to its confluence in the Klinglung Regency.

Aling-Aling Waterfall is located in the village of Sambangan, about twenty minutes south of Singaraja.

Visitors use this waterfall as a thirty-meter-long natural slide that descends to a pool of crystal-clear water.

There are seven other waterfalls near Aling-Aling Waterfall.

Tibumana Waterfall

Tibumana Waterfall is located at Banjar Bangun Lebah Kawan, Apuan Village, Bangli Regency, ten kilometers from Goa Gajah Temple in Ubud.

You can swim in the pool under the waterfall.

Tegenungan Waterfall

Tegenungan Waterfall is near Ubud in Tegenungan Kamenuh on the Petan River, Gianyar Regency.

To visit this waterfall, you won’t be able to count on an adventure through the hills, as with the waterfalls in northern Bali, because this waterfall is one of the few that is not in a mountainous area.

November could be a good month to visit the World Heritage rice terraces at Jatiluwih, as they will begin to fill up with water after the first of the wet season rains. Indonesian authorities are preparing to enforce a new visitor levy after catching tourists behaving badly

Australians in Bali for holidays have been left confused by a new $15 tourism tax and efforts by police to enforce payment.

The levy, which is intended to help the island cope with millions of visitors each year, was announced last year after a series of incidents involving visitors desecrating holy sites and behaving badly.

It came into effect on February 14 and could bring in more than $80 million of revenue a year in Bali, which the government says will go towards cultural preservation and environmental measures — such as beach clean-ups.

But most holiday-makers are not paying it, with 60 per cent of tourists in the first month not forking over the money for the levy.

Staff are not forcing arrivals at the airport to pay the fee up-front, and some Australians the ABC spoke to were unaware of how to pay for it.

"I knew about the tourist tax, but nobody asked us to pay it — $15 is not much and if it goes to good use, it's fine to pay," said Rachel Fisher, who regularly travels to Bali.

Another regular visitor, Damien Tout from Melbourne, paid the tax online in advance but was surprised nobody checked the receipt when he entered at the airport.

"It could be another $50, we wouldn't care. We'd still come to Bali," he said.

But others weren't so ambivalent about the fee. On the first day of random spot checks by tourism police at the famous Uluwatu temple, some visitors were left visibly angry by the shakedown for money, as many others walked by.

Among them were families with children who had to stump up $15 for each person.

The ABC observed some tourists struggling to connect to a payment app to pay the fee, while many visitors showed officers their visa-on-arrival receipt, unaware of the separate fee.

The new levy comes after authorities introduced a "dos and don'ts" list at the airport last year , designed to remind visitors to be more respectful towards the island's predominantly Hindu culture.

Bali's plan to crack down on badly behaved tourists

The "dos and don'ts" list told visitors not to climb sacred trees, misbehave in public or wear inappropriate clothing around religious places.

The list was announced after authorities deported a Russian influencer for dropping his pants at a sacred mountain and a Russian woman for posing naked on a 700-year-old sacred tree.

A German woman was also placed in a medical facility after she roamed around naked and busted in the doors of a temple during a traditional dance performance last year.

Australians have also been accused of bad behaviour, with a woman caught on camera berating a local police officer who stopped her for not wearing a helmet while riding her motorbike.

An Australian man was also caught stealing a box of erectile-dysfunction medication from a pharmacy, while more recently, two Australians were hospitalised after they were involved in a vicious street brawl in Kuta.

The measures to improve tourist behaviour are also targeting visitors overstaying their visas or running businesses in breach of the rules.

Many are Russians who have flocked to the island since the beginning of Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine, with Indonesia a relatively welcoming destination for them.

"[For bad behaviour] we have the list on what tourists can do and what they cannot do in Bali," said I Ketut Yadnya, the head of promotions for the Bali government's tourism office.

"But the levy is different. We want our tourism to be sustainable, and to sustain it, we need to conserve the culture.

"So for that, we need, of course, some money."

New levy designed to help Bali cope with influx of visitors

The gentle rollout of the new levy has been designed not to spook foreign tourists from coming.

Before the COVID pandemic, Bali received more than 6 million foreign tourists in 2019. Post-pandemic, the numbers are creeping back up, with 5.25 million arriving in 2023.

Domestic visitors from other parts of Indonesia last year numbered more than 9 million.

Tourism officials want the economic boost of more visitors, even though locals on the island say it worsens traffic and the amount of garbage washing up on the famous beaches.

"Tourists of course [increase] rubbish, but a clean destination is part of what draws them to Bali in the first place," said Wayan Puspa Negara, a local politician who volunteers with a beach clean-up group.

"So the more rubbish that washes up on the beaches means our destination is less appealing."

To better manage the tourism influx, Ketut Yadnya from the tourism office says the levy will help fund programs like beach clean-ups, including buying better beach cleaning equipment, so that volunteers don't have to do it by hand.

"There's no fine if you don't pay, and tourists can still leave Bali at the airport, there's no problem," he said.

"We just need their awareness when they come to Bali, they have to know that Bali needs something to protect their tourism."

With the scheme still in its infancy, tourism police are offering some leniency to those who have failed to pay.

They have facilitated instant payment for visitors who have not paid, and even allowed them to pay later if they can not provide the cashless payment on the spot.

Locals fear the fee will deter travellers

Some Bali locals dependent on the tourist trade oppose the levy, believing it sends the wrong message.

Hamid Isnaini, a vendor in Kuta, believes $15 a person on top of a 500,000 rupiah ($50) visa-on-arrival fee might drive some visitors to rival destinations.

"They should let people come to Bali for free," he said, as a handful of tourists idled past his store, which displays Bintang beer singlets and boardshorts.

"Before the COVID pandemic, many tourists came to Bali because it was free to enter, but after the borders reopened, they introduced a visa-on-arrival fee."

He believes a second levy on top of that might deter a full rebound of pre-pandemic tourist numbers.

"We should be like Thailand, where tourists can enter without paying a fee," he said.

Other vendors selling clothes nearby agreed with him.

Mr Yadnya acknowledges there have been some teething problems with the new levy, but says the troubles are all part of "socialising" the idea of the fee.

The hope is that in the future, people coming to Bali will know about the fee and be willing to pay it.

"We need their awareness that they also have to be involved in conservation to preserve our culture," he said.

"If in future tourists come to Bali and the culture's been ruined, they won't see anything."
