Baja Small Ship Cruise: La Paz, Mexico

Experience abundant marine life such as whale sharks, gray whales, dolphins, sea lions, and more as you cruise the waters of the Sea of Cortez. You'll enjoy authentic cuisine while on your eight-day baja cruise.

Small Ship Baja Cruise: La Paz, Mexico

The sea of cortez.

Abundant wildlife, natural wonders, and warm clear waters make the Sea of Cortez one of the best ecotourism destinations. Dubbed “The World’s Aquarium” by Jacques Cousteau, these waters are home to over 900 species of fish and nearly 32 types of marine mammals that gather to mate and feed in the warm waters of this oceanic paradise. A  UNESCO World Heritage Site , the Sea of Cortez is the richest body of water on our entire planet, making it a must-see for anyone who loves the ocean.

Baja Cruise Overview

Experience a variety of marine life, including whale sharks, gray whales, dolphins, sea lions, and more as you cruise the waters of the Sea of Cortez. Knowledgeable guides share the rich cultural and natural history of the Baja region, and local ingredients are part of the cuisine. The smaller size of this ship gives you entrée into areas of Baja you would never experience on a bigger ship or by land. Fewer passengers on-board means that expeditions are made up of small groups and the crew can devote more attention to their guests. No hidden fees for excursions gives you the option to kayak, hike, snorkel, paddleboard, or hang out on-board and enjoy the view.

Sea of Cortez Cruise Details

This sample itinerary is only a guideline; variations may occur to maximize your experience.

Day 1 – San José del Cabo / La Paz – Embark

Bienvenidos! You will be met at the Los Cabos International Airport in San José del Cabo and transferred to the outfitter’s hospitality area. Joined by your expedition team, an overland orientation transfer to La Paz acquaints you with the dramatic Baja landscape. The captain and crew welcome you aboard just in time for a cocktail and dinner with your new mates.

Day 2 – Isla San Francisco

In a playground of steep red bluffs and sweeping desert beach, kick off your week long adventure with a day of play. Don some flippers for a snorkel among colorful sea life. Put on your walking shoes for an exploratory hike. Grab a paddle or relax on the beach with the sand between your toes. The rugged beauty of the island makes it an ideal spot for escapades.

Day 3 – Bahía Agua Verde

At Bahía Agua Verde, clear waters are bordered by sparse craggy mountains hemmed in green. Explore the coast by small skiff before visiting with a local ranchero and his family. Finally take to the canyons and mountains on a mule ride and experience the “real Baja.” Scenic vistas, outstanding exploration, excellent birding, and unmatched camaraderie.

Day 4 – Captain’s Choice

While it’s unlikely you’ll find any black pearls, today you’ll sail amongst islands once explored by early conquistadors. Adventurous options available include kayaking, hiking, paddleboarding, or beach combing. Discover nature’s diversity and learn about the geologic forces that formed these islands.

Day 5 – Marine Life Search

Magdalena Bay (mid-January – early-March) Mother Nature is your guide today. Gray whales arrive each year on Baja’s west coast after migrating more than 12,000 miles to calve in Bahía Magdalena. Dock in Puerto Escondido, then drive across the peninsula to ride in a panga and observe these mammals and their babies in the lagoon. -OR- Bahía de la Paz (November – mid-January; March; the order of days will change) Whale sharks, the largest known species of fish, are known to frequent the bay. Keep watch for the watery “footprints” of these gentle giants. Conditions permitting, gear up for an unforgettable swim alongside this colossal creature or observe from above in the skiff.

Day 6 – Los Islotes / Isla Partida

At Los Islotes, a steep craggy seamount leaping straight from the sea, observe a sea lion colony from the boat and skiff. Slip into a wetsuit for an early morning snorkel with curious, agile young sea lion pups. Afterwards, heave anchor and set sail for Isla Partida, for an afternoon of water play or island hikes along desert beaches and` rocky arroyos.

Day 7 – Isla Espíritu Santo

Tuck into a secluded cove surrounded by long fingers of red rock and a golden beach. Spend your last full day enjoying the feel of warm sand under your feet on a beach walk. Investigate nooks and crannies in the rocks by kayak. Or explore a little further afield on a guided hike. Celebrate your week at tonight’s special Farewell Dinner with an entertaining slideshow.

Day 8 – La Paz / San José – Disembark

After breakfast, it’s “adios” La Paz, as you disembark the vessel and transfer back to San José del Cabo for your flight.

Need to Know

Timing is everything.

The marine life in the Sea of Cortez is abundant and ever-changing. February through April bring visiting gray, fin, humpback, Brydes’ and orca whales, dolphins, mobula rays, and thousands of resident and migratory birds. August through October offer great water visibility perfect for snorkeling and diving with sperm whales, juvenile sea lions, and giant squid. November through January are great for whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, and snorkeling with sea lions.

What to Expect

Your adventure begins at the Los Cabos International Airport in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico where you will be met by the outfitter and transferred to their hospitality area. During dinner choose from several entrées including fresh, local seafood and meats or a vegetarian dish. Plus enjoy a chef-selected wine pairing. Featured Ports on a Sea of Cortez Cruise

Learn more about the ports on your Mexico cruise to the Sea of Cortez.

  • Cabo San Lucas
  • Puerto Vallarta

Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is surrounded by clear waters and sun-kissed beaches. As one of the world’s premier resort destinations, it’s the perfect place to relax, recharge and reawaken your passion for adventure. On a Mexico cruise, tour Todos Santos and enjoy lunch at the Hotel California. Or sail on a catamaran to Lover’s Beach, and snap a photo in front of El Arco on your way.

When it was founded in 1535, La Paz was a quiet bay with roaringly beautiful landscapes. Today the city is still home to sun-drenched beaches and mountains, but it’s also teeming with lively locals and endless activities. During your Sea of Cortez cruise, lounge on the golden shores. Or spend the day downtown shopping for artisan goods — like woven textiles and pottery — at the street side stalls.

While Loreto is known for its cliff-top vistas and sparkling beaches, there’s more to the city than just its scenery. On a Sea of Cortez cruise, visit the missions that give the city its rich history — like Mission San Javier and Mission of Our Lady of Loreto. Or snorkel through the 100-mile Loreto National Marine Park for a chance to see some of the 800 species of fish that swim through the waters.

Between its beaches, aquatic parks and vibrant art scene, Puerto Vallarta’s varied landscapes offer adventures for all. On a Mexico cruise, wander through the city’s galleries, and sample tequila alongside handmade tortillas and salsa. Or stroll along the seafront Malecon boardwalk – the city’s premier shopping destination — where mementos, margaritas and Mexican buffets await.

What to Do on a Baja California Cruise

On a Sea of Cortez cruise with Princess, discover culture around every corner.

  • Natural Wonderlands

Inspired by 19th-century California mission-style architecture, Mexico’s cathedrals tell a unique story of times past. On a Sea of Cortez cruise to La Paz, visit the Cathedral de Nuestra Senora de la Paz. Admire the preserved stained-glass windows that decorate its exterior. Then step inside to see a collection of paintings and statues dedicated to Virgin Mary, the city’s patron saint.

Taste, see and meet true Mexican heritage on a Baja California cruise with Princess. In Loreto, stroll down the cobbled streets decorated with multi-colored homes, shops and museums. Sample Mexican seafood — like “chocolate” clams cooked over rocks — while sipping on spicy margaritas. Or meet the locals on a visit to the Main Plaza or during a traditional Mexican fiesta.

Natural wonderlands

From beaches to jungles, Mexico’s landscapes are untamed. During your Sea of Cortez cruise, see these terrains like never before. In Puerto Vallarta, take a boat to Las Caletas, a secluded oasis surrounded by sandy shores and forests. Hike through the island’s interior alongside a local guide, or zipline through the woods at the Kids Adventure Park. Then take a dip in the sea before your boat ride back to the city.

History is an important part of Mexico’s story. On a Baja California cruise, discover tales from ancient civilizations when you visit San Jose Del Cabo, just a short drive from Cabo San Lucas. Between the 18th-century architecture and the Spanish colonial character, let the preserved charm of this rural town transport you to Mexico’s past. Hear stories from locals, and learn city secrets from expert guides.

Sea of Cortez excursions

Our Sea of Cortez cruise excursions introduce you to the people and places that call Mexico home. Embark on an off-road adventure through the jungles of Puerto Vallarta, then enjoy lunch by a hidden lagoon. Kayak along Loreto’s coastline with your loved ones, and horseback ride along Cabo’s sandy shores. Or visit the El Serpentario Reptile Center and Cactus Nursey in La Paz and get up close to enclosed snakes, lizards and crocodiles.

More ashore

Enjoy every second in Cabo with More Ashore overnight stays. On any of our 10-day Baja California cruises, enjoy two days in Mexico’s resort city. Sip on a cocktail while watching the sun set over the ocean. Dance the night away in one of the bustling bars. Or taste Mexican street-food — including smoked fish, tacos and chicken tamales — alongside locals at any of the city’s restaurants.

Ships on this itinerary

Our Princess fleet includes ships that offer a multitude of amenities and feature the innovative MedallionClass® experience. From a balcony stateroom, take in the sights and sounds of the colorful cultures ashore before enjoying the “sabor” of local cuisine in one of our many eateries during your Sea of Cortez cruise.

Mexico Cruises Onboard Experience

Experience the country’s unique character the second you step on the ship with traditional Mexican cuisine, events and activities.

Mariachi and margaritas

Sip, savor and sway to the music with onboard activities that give you a taste of Mexican tradition. Sample tequila while learning about the drink’s history from a local expert, and indulge your taste buds with tacos and fajitas. Or let loose with your loved ones during a mariachi performance, and dance to the lively tune of violins and guitars. On a cruise to Mexico with Princess, activities lie around every corner.

Every reason to celebrate

On select sailings in October and November, discover the region’s heritage with our Mexican Fiesta. Celebrate the Day of the Dead, a holiday to commemorate loved ones who have passed. From face-painting to Aztec flower-making, there are activities for the whole family on a cruise to Mexico. Learn a traditional dance, decorate marzipan skulls and make a skeleton out of pasta. Or watch dancers perform ‘The Procession of the Dead.’

Mexican and Spanish Cuisine

Famous for a reason

Recognized by UNESCO for its cultural heritage and preservation of culinary technique, Mexican and Spanish cuisine is a big part of the region’s culture. Sample the bold flavors and creative combinations for yourself on a cruise to Mexico with Princess. In many of our dining rooms, enjoy Mexican-themed dishes — like ceviche, fajitas and coconut cocadas — for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Set in the brilliant turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez, our adventure brings you up close to the wonders of Baja. With a classic 86-foot wooden ship as our base and kayaks on board, you'll explore between La Paz and Loreto, enjoying incredible experiences by land and sea. Sea kayak along the beaches of Isla Espíritu Santo, snorkel with playful sea lions, and track sperm whales and blue whales—the largest creatures to roam the earth—in the “Blue Triangle.” Anchoring each night in a secluded bay, you'll enjoy gorgeous sunsets, savor incredible gourmet meals fresh from the land and sea, and watch the magic of the starlit desert sky. We offer two separate itineraries, each with a special added attraction. The 9-day itinerary is timed for December-January, at the end of the rainy season, when long-dormant plants flush bright green and migratory birds arrive to feast during this brief period of abundance. We'll swim and snorkel with whale sharks—the largest fish in the world!—and enjoy the serene Sea of Cortez. We'll snorkel through warm, clear waters along the steep rocky shores and over the shallow reefs that teem with life. On the 11- and 12-day departures, you'll travel over the peninsula to Bahía Magdalena or Laguna San Ignacio for an overnight adventure of up-close encounters among the gray whales who come to these peaceful, warm-water lagoons each year to breed and give birth to their young. Imagine looking eye-to-eye with these magnificent creatures! These journeys are timed in January-March, when gray whale calves are curious and playful, often swimming right next to our boats. We'll also have the opportunity to spend a half-day swim and snorkel with whale sharks. No matter which itinerary you choose, you're in for the experience of a lifetime!

Bahía Magdalena and Laguna San Ignacio (depending on season) are two famed lagoons where gray whales give birth and rear their young each winter. The bays are well protected and offer a calm basin for the whales. They sometimes approach our pangas (skiffs), and it's a thrill to see these gentle giants at close range. At your beachfront hotel (or safari-style camp, depending on itinerary), relax with a cold drink and watch a spectacular Baja sunset.

Board the Westward in the La Paz marina and head across the Sea of Cortez to UNESCO protected Isla Espíritu Santo National Park, a wilderness of deserted white-sand beaches, secluded coves, rugged multi-colored cliffs, and thickly vegetated arroyos (dry canyons) spiked with a colorful array of cactus species. Wildlife includes sea turtles, friendly sea lions, and an underwater kaleidoscope of colorful tropical fish. Jump into your kayak for wonderful paddling, and in the evenings back on board, dine on the chef's culinary creations and gaze at star-filled skies.

As we cruise north, we explore along meandering shorelines, dropping anchor to enjoy unique island and peninsula sites on land and in the water. We'll hike island trails that host endemic cactus, and one stop may be Los Islotes, where we can snorkel with resident California sea lions who tempt us into a game of underwater tag. Each day is filled with adventure, from snorkeling above rocky reefs teeming with fish to watching schools of mobula rays or dolphins leaping above the water's surface. Along the way, we'll pass through the "Blue Triangle," an important area for wintering blue whales as well as sperm and humpback whales. Depart on Day 11 via Loreto.

What the Trip is Like

This trip is rated Level 2 (Easy to Moderate) according to our trip grading system. The expedition vessel serves as our mobile base camp. We explore remote beaches and islands by day, then enjoy the comfort of the ship in the evening for good food, fine company, and a comfortable bunk.

With just a few hours of cruising each day, there is plenty of time for walking, wildlife watching, swimming, snorkeling, and sea kayaking, all in the company of an on-board naturalist who shares insights into the local botany and natural history. Because our Trip Leader is an accomplished diver, we can expand our opportunities for in-the-water snorkel explorations. The water is warm, but not tropically warm, so “shorty” wetsuits are recommended for those interested in snorkeling or swimming.

Our meals are elegant, locally sourced, and artfully presented. Fresh ingredients come from local providers whenever possible, including organic farmers, and fish is bought directly from local fishers.

A Note on the Itinerary

Every trip aboard a small ship can—and should—be slightly different. This is our planned itinerary, but if conditions and wildlife, whether on land or sea, present us with special opportunities, we'll alter our course and head that way to experience it. Our itineraries are leisurely—we don't rush past hundreds of miles of beautiful coves and inlets to stay on schedule, and we don't travel at night. A flexible attitude and an openness to the unexpected keep the adventure alive on these voyages.

The detailed explanation of each trip—below the bar with the number rating—is perhaps more important, specifying activities, altitudes, hiking, and travel conditions. The Detailed Itinerary, available by download or mail, gives further information. Our Area Managers can also answer questions and guide you to the trip that best suits your interests.

7 or 10 Night Baja Vacation Cruise | Jan - Dec 2024 - 2025 | Two Adventures to Choose From. Sea Lions, Snorkeling, and Sun.

Steinbeck, Cousteau… now it’s your turn to explore the “world’s aquarium” on a Mexico cruise in the Sea of Cortes. Greet sea lions from the boat or skiff, or slip into a wetsuit for an even closer encounter. Getting your sea legs is easy too—relax with toes in the sand, on a hike, or atop a mule through the canyons of Baja. Land and sea are a step, or kayak, away. Whale watch from the boat, and visit grey whales and their babies during calving season or gentle whale sharks on your sailing. There are plenty of opportunities to spot your favorite whale throughout the season going farther north than other cruise lines or being captivated by the marine and sealife throughout the adventure through remote islands.

Complete with a mule ride and plenty of snorkeling with colorful marine life, experience the bounty that is Baja. Get into the wild with a mule ride accompanied by a local ranchero or a snorkel with the sea lions in a quiet cove.

Each year California gray whales pause during their migrations to birth and nurse their calves in the Bahia Magdalena lagoons. For most travelers, the only opportunity to observe the mothers and calves is to take a bus across the Baja peninsula for a day trip. Fortunately, this 8-day Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise explores both coastlines of the Baja Peninsula and offers ample on-water time inside key bays, enhancing every passenger’s experience among the great whales.

Spend time with these gentle giants in Bahia Almejas and Boca de Soledad, making Zodiac forays for up-close observations. Ply the warm Baja water on kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, Zodiacs and local pangas. Desert island hikes complement time spent on the water, offering a true variety of wildlife spotting in the Gulf of California. Snorkel with sea lions and search for marine mammals, all while benefiting from professional naturalist guides with more than 30 years’ experience.

The 100-guest National Geographic Venture offers the best in active small ship cruising. Each expedition is crafted for the most in-depth experience of Baja California possible and to maximize time spent in the company of California gray whales. Flexibility is paramount to take advantage of a sighting of blue or sperm whales. Be prepared to linger in expedition landing crafts to watch blue-footed boobies plunge dive into a massive school of bait fish. With captain and crew focused on seeking the best opportunities and an expert expedition team including a National Geographic-certified photo instructor and an undersea specialist enhancing the experience, this Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise is truly a trip of a lifetime.

Main Baja California: Among the Great Whales Itinerary

The main Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise begins in Loreto, Baja, with an overland transit to San Carlos, where guests embark and cruise counterclockwise around the tip of the Baja Peninsula back to Loreto.

Baja California: Among the Great Whales cruise route map, operating round-trip from Loreto with visits to San Carlos, Magdalena Bay, Cabo Pulmo, La Paz & Los Islotes.

Arrive in Loreto and be transferred to San Carlos to embark the ship. Tonight, the ship will anchor off the coast of Isla Santa Margarita.

  • National Geographic Venture

Awake anchored in Bahia Almejas, the southernmost part of the Bay. The ship will stop at a large frigatebird colony enroute to the spectacular whale grounds of Bahía Almejas. Whales in this part of the bay tend to be very active so settle in for some great experiences. During lunch, the ship will reposition to Isla Magdalena for a shore excursion to explore the ever-shifting sand dunes, on a cross-island walk to one of the most pristine beaches in the Pacific. Bird watching can be excellent here with abundant seabirds in action and shorebirds patrolling the beaches as they fatten up and prepare for long journeys to Arctic breeding grounds.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Each winter, during their long migration, gray whales travel south from their Arctic feeding grounds to breed and give birth and raise their calves in these sheltered waters. Transfer by motorcoach to López Mateos and spend the full day observing these majestic creatures. Together with savvy local Mexican fishermen, board local boats to view the numerous mother-calf pairs that thrive in this sheltering region. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to the ship in late afternoon.

Kickstart the morning with stretching hosted by the onboard wellness specialist on the sun deck. After breakfast, if conditions permit, explore the bay’s vast mangrove system via kayak, stand-up paddleboard and Zodiac, and learn how these massive ecosystems support their surroundings. This afternoon, the ship sails out through “La Entrada,” leaving Magdalena Bay behind. Traveling south along the coast of the peninsula, there is a chance of seeing a wide variety of marine life, including the largest animal on Earth, the blue whale. Hear naturalist talks and learn photography basics.

Start off the day with a majestic sunrise over the iconic Friars Rocks at Land’s End. Spend the rest of the morning searching the seas of Gorda Banks seamount, a renowned gathering place for whales, especially humpbacks, dolphins and other sea life. Following lunch, set out to snorkel the pristine reefs of Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, one of the most successful national marine parks in the world, and chat with locals about their advocacy to protect this unique place.

Conditions permitting, anchor off the coast of Los Islotes. Don your provided flippers, mask and snorkel, and swim with curious sea lions. The ship then repositions to the colorful city of La Paz where you can garner insight into the culture of Mexico, soak in the vibrant street art and stroll the lively Malecon. Dinner will be an unforgettable cultural experience, complete with local cuisine, dancing and folklore.

Today is flexible to explore some uninhabited islands. The captain and expedition leader will choose the perfect combination of activities for the day. You may go ashore at Isla San Francisco, where a sweeping arc of white sand beach beckons you to kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Or, hike with the naturalist to the nearby ridge for unparalleled views over Isla Danzante. There may also be an opportunity to visit the abandoned salt works on Isla Carmen. Enjoy the chance to see the great diversity offered in the Gulf of California, and with some luck, spot the amazing wildlife.

Disembark in Loreto after breakfast and transfer to the city center. Here you can choose to visit the first mission in Baja California, as well as the nearby museum to learn more about what makes this town so special. Enjoy free time to explore the quaint shops and vibrant side streets. After lunch, transfer to Loreto Airport for flights home.

Featured in this Traveler Review

We had a truly magical time in Baja...Mom and I will never forget the experience for the rest of of our lives. I was blessed to be able to touch and feel the whale for a considerable amount of time, as he or she stayed by my side with the head lifted out of the water for a good while. It was a spiritual experience, and I could not breathe well or talk for the entire time, as I was so overwhelmed with emotions. In addition, I met some fantastic people on the ship, more so than in any other trips. While not every day was equally great, the intimate whale encounter on the last day was a true dream come true. I was so overwhelmed with emotions that I will never forget the moment for as long as I live. The trip was overall outstanding.

We had a room with a balcony. Saw many birds (pelicans and gulls) following the ship and fishing throughout the night just outside of our balcony. It was a great little room.

COVID Logistics

In general, it was a very friendly and open environment, despite the COVID pressure.

Itinerary Review

While we did not get to snorkel with the young California sea lions due to wind (had to completely skip that), and there weren’t too many whales or dolphins while making the journey to the Pacific side, we had one absolutely enchanting morning with the whales on the last day—one came right up to the boat and hung out with us. The trip was worth it just for that morning.

Another spectacular sighting was to see about a hundred brown boobies swarming the cliffside of Isla Danzante and diving into the ocean in perfect unison on our first full day. It was as if they were herding the fish from just the above the water — all of them moving so fast in complete unison. There were birds — brown pelicans, boobies — diving all over the place as we watched from the top of the cliff. It was simply breathtaking! That, I thought, was the magic of Baja! The Vista Walk to the top of the cliff gave us an incredible sighting of numerous brown boobies dive-bombing down the cliff. I had never seen so many boobies flying and diving in unison, coming back out of the water, gliding over the water's surface with such speed and agility. I was completely mesmerized. Also, we had our first encounters with the jumping cactus and a very impressive Cordone cactus that was several times my height.

We did not get to kayak nearly as often as I thought, and I hoped for more intimate encounters with the birds, but overall, mom and I think that one morning with the gray whale was worth the entire admission.

Isla San Francisco - amazing clear turquoise waters, thousands of fish -- some very colorful and beautiful, Sally Lightfoot crabs, pelicans diving in front of my kayaks, and the ridge walk with the perfect view of the gorgeous Moon bay and desert vegetations. Adrian also showed us a Chugwala.

By far, the most incredible experience was on the last day at Bahia Almejas. Unlike at Magdalena bay where I felt that we were chasing after the mother-calf gray whale pair, the last day felt very different. We were in a very large body of water, and the whales surrounded us. One particular friendly gray whale came to our boats and stayed with us, lifting its beautiful head out of the water and allowing us to touch and kiss him. He or she stayed by my side for a long while, allowing me to take a very close look at all the barnacles and whale lice, and to feel him and talk to him. It was truly an once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

The menu was not variable enough to my liking -- always fish similarly prepared, beef/port of some sort, and vegetarian choices. I did mostly enjoy the fish options. The dining staff was really excellent. I met some of the best companions on this trip, and we have exchanged contact information. We are already in correspondence and hope to make other trips together. One family of 3, in particular, made the week particularly enjoyable. The meals times with this family were so much fun that I nearly cried every time from laughing so hard.

Crew & Guides Review

Of course I treasured learning about the plant species, and the naturalists were (particularly the Mexican biologists) were so knowledgeable that I loved listening to them. The naturalists, particularly Adrian and Carlos - the two Mexican biologists - were true experts of the region's fauna, marine life, and various Sonoran desert ecosystems. Shane Sanders, another naturalist, photographer, and bird expert, took great care to help correct the settings on my camera and took particular effort to be sure that mom and I had the best opportunities for whale and bird watching. While Sarah was very responsive to my requests, I felt as though she did not have the typical energy of an expedition leader. Lindblad was very responsive to my requests to add a bird walk on couple of different days.

Andrew Browning is simply the best. He is the most reliable, responsive, detail-oriented, and meticulous travel guide I have ever had. I could not ask for anyone better and feel extremely fortunate to have had the chance to work with Andrew. He made all the difference!!! I really missed him when he was away on paternity leave. Andrew Browning at AdventureSmith has been one of the best parts of the whole process. He is as honest and trustworthy as he is thoughtful and meticulous. He takes such complete care of you that I would always want to work with Andrew in particular to prepare and book a trip whenever possible. One just cannot get better guidance than what Andrew can offer.

Traveler Advice

I have always wanted to go to Baja for marine mammals and bird watching. While we did not get to see any huge pods of dolphins or humpback whales up and close (did see a few in the distance), the close encounter with the gray whales on the last day made up for the previously lackluster whale encounters. It's hard not to expect fantastic encounters with wildlife when you go to a place like Baja, but the encounters are highly unpredictable as is the wind and water. One has to do his or her best to remain flexible and have an open mind and be willing to enjoy whatever happens and appreciate it. There is true magic to Baja, and it is heartwarming to see places that can not only recover from human destruction but also thrive.

Small Ship Cruises in Mexico

Mexico is a country rich in culture, natural beauty and unique wildlife. A fantastic place for seeing dolphins and Whale spotting

Mexico cruises of the Sea of Cortez take visitors into a land of rugged red cliffs, turquoise waters and what Jacques Cousteau dubbed “the world’s aquarium”. Also known as the Gulf of California, the Sea of Cortez separates the Baja California Peninsula from the rest of Mexico and is home to a staggering number of fish and marine mammal species, including numerous species of whale, rays and dolphins.

An adventure cruise paradise, the area offers the opportunity to explore on land and sea, from hiking the arroyos to kayaking secluded coves and even swimming with seals and whale sharks. Sea of Cortez cruises encompass the laid-back culture of La Paz, the biodiversity of the Bay of Loreto National Park, and the arroyos of Bahia Agua Verde, and much more.

Best Mexico cruises and areas to visit

Baja California is a region rich with culture, natural beauty and unique wildlife. La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur and a departure point for many Baja cruises, is a cosmopolitan city that blends old world charm with a modern edge. The waters between La Paz and Loreto brim with marine life, including several species of whale, dolphins, marlin and rays. In Bahia de la Paz, from November to mid-January, search for whale sharks, the largest species of fish in the world, and take the opportunity to swim with these gentle giants. The city of Loreto features colonial buildings on a mountainous backdrop.

The Sea of Cortez , also known as the Gulf of California, has been called “the world’s aquarium”, due to its incredible biodiversity. It remains a favorite diving site and Mexico small ship cruises of the area explore many of its treasures, from its many uninhabited islands to its rugged coastline and, of course, its vibrant and varied wildlife. Over 900 types of fish and 32 species of marine mammal call the area home.

The Bay of Loreto National Park covers nearly 2065 square kilometers (797 square miles) in the Gulf of Mexico and dates back to 1996. Mexico boat cruises passing through this UNESCO World Heritage site will share its waters with over 800 species of marine life. Over a third of the world’s cetacean species can be found in the park, including blue whales, sperm whales, fin whales , humpback whales, and pilot whales.

In the Bahia Agua Verde , or “Green Water Bay”, take to a small boat to drift over its clear waters and along its rocky shore, taking in “Roca Solitaria”, the white pinnacle rock standing out against the red cliffs beyond. Take to shore to visit with a local ranchero, then hop onto a mule for a guided tour of the craggy peaks and wide crevices of the arroyos.

Bahia Magdalena , located on Baja’s west coast, is one of the world’s prime spots to watch for grey whales, especially in mid-January to early March, when mothers arrive to calve. Baja cruises of Bahian Magdalena also provide the opportunity to spot dolphins and a variety of sea birds.

Ensenada Grande, on the west side of Isla Partida, consists of a jumble of red rocks bristling with cacti, its cliffs surrounded by jade-colored waters. The waters are so clear that kayaking here may feel like hovering over the white sand bottom. Kayak or snorkel along the bay to discover enigmatic rock formations carved by the water, wind and time. Eventually, the crag give way to one of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches.

Isla San Francisco boasts a sheltered bay fringed with a crescent-shaped beach and bordered on each side with dramatic cliffs rising above the waves. Located off the eastern coast of Baja California Sur, Isla San Francisco is uninhabited, except for ten species of reptile, including the endemic whiptails. Visitors can snorkel with sea life, such as eels and mobula rays, or hike to spectacular views of the red cliffs and azure waters.

Isla Espiritu Santo , or Island of the Holy Spirit, features stupendous cliffs rising above azure waters and white sands. This UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Gulf of California consists of multicolored arroyos and craggy mountains, its rocky coastline scalloped with secluded bays. Here, visitors hike the interior, and kayak or swim the crystal clear waters. The island is also a prime snorkeling site, with its abundant fish population representing nearly 40% of the world’s species.

Los Islotes is a highlight of any Mexico adventure cruise, combining wildlife encounters with underwater activities. Los Islotes, a tiny island off the coast of Isla Espiritu Santo, is home to a sea lion colony and visitors on a Sea of Cortez cruise will have the opportunity to swim with these playful creatures.

Best time to cruise in Mexico

Mexico in late November to February is winter. Winter in Baja California Sur brings strong winds that can make water conditions in the Sea of Cortez less comfortable. These winds can last until mid-March. This season is also rainier, but most rain in the region falls to the north, with the Sea of Cortez seeing only occasional storms.

Mexico in March to May is spring, when the winds die and the weather warms. Spring also brings Carnaval to the city of La Paz. In 2017, however, Carnaval comes early, from February 23 to 28.

Mexico in June to early September is summer, when it is very hot and sunny. Summer may bring the occasional hurricane to the Sea of Cortez, but these are exceedingly rare, though occasional tropical storms are more common.

Mexico in September to November is the best time to visit Baja, as the weather cools slightly but remains warm and the crowds thin out.

Mexico in mid-January to early March is the best time to see grey whales.

Mexico in November to mid-January, as well as March, is the best time to see whale sharks.

How to get to Mexico?

Los Cabos International Airport, in San José del Cabo, is serviced by most major airlines, though a connection may be required, depending on point of origin.

Where do Mexico cruises depart from?

Typically, Sea of Cortez small ship cruises depart from La Paz, Mexico. Visitors will fly into San José del Cabo’s Los Cabos International Airport, followed by an overland transfer to the port city of La Paz .

Mexico Cruise Tips

  • Plan ahead to ensure availability, especially in the summer, when crowds are larger, and in the winter, when itineraries may be limited or unavailable.
  • Choose the right trip for you, ensuring that your interests and priorities are met by your chosen itinerary. If you want culture, ensure that extra time is spent in La Paz. If you’re looking for wildlife encounters, verify that whale watching is included on your cruise, along with the opportunity to swim with whale sharks and seals. If you’re all about the beach, maximize the number of islands on your route and book ahead to reserve a summer spot.
  • Mexico’s climate makes sunscreen and sunglasses musts, but also be sure to pack good hiking shoes, a camera and a waterproof shell for those windy days.
  • Though snorkeling gear is often offered onboard, bring your own if you wish to ensure fit and availability.
  • A passport is required to enter Mexico by air, as is a tourist permit, though these can be obtained upon arrival and are frequently included in your airfare. Most North American and European visitors will not require a visa to enter Mexico, including citizens of the United States, countries belonging to the European Union, as well as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Norway and Switzerland, among others. Visitors from China, Russia, South Africa and India require a visa.
  • ATM’s and exchange bureaus are common, while credit cards are accepted at most mid-to-high-range facilities.
  • Tipping is common in Mexico. Waiters are typically given a 10% to 15% gratuity, while porters are usually given a 50 pesos note. Taxi drivers are not typically tipped.
  • Though reports of crime in Mexico continue, there are no travel warnings for the regions of La Paz, Baja California Sur or the Sea of Cortez.

Ditch the polar gear: 7 warm-weather expedition cruises that will wow nature and adventure lovers

The Pacific Plunge_Captain Cook Cruises

If you thought expedition cruising was all about polar destinations, think again. The newest ships and itineraries will have you swapping the thermal gear for swimsuits, basking in bright sunshine and slipping into the warm crystal waters in some of the more remote tropics around the world, including wild frontiers without the bone-chilling cold.

Here are seven of the best warm-weather expedition itineraries to explore.

Seabourn in the Kimberley

small ship cruises sea of cortez

The Kimberley is Australia's hottest destination right now, and Seabourn 's ultra-luxe Seabourn Pursuit — which debuts there in June — is the best way to see it in style. The 10-night Waterfalls and Wandjinas tour from Broome to Darwin winds through a wilderness that is almost the size of California but home to fewer than 40,000 people.

Natural wonders abound in this wild frontier etched with rivers, waterfalls, tidal creeks, reefs and white sand beaches — many only accessible by boat. On guided tours, witness ancient rock art, dive into Western Australia's rich pearling history and experience Indigenous culture firsthand with a traditional face-painting ceremony.

On board the 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit is a wellness spa, 24-hour room service (hello caviar) and the Bow Lounge, which features interactive navigation maps and front-row seats to saltwater crocodiles and the magnificent red sandstone gorges that date back 1.8 billion years. Expeditions are equally mind-blowing, as the Zodiac boats thread through the narrow gap of Horizontal Falls or zip out as the tide turns so guests can see Montgomery Reef surface magically from the sea.

UnCruise Adventures in Hawaii

small ship cruises sea of cortez

Nothing says aloha like island hopping in Hawaii aboard a 36-guest boutique yacht. UnCruise Adventures ' seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes expedition is one for nature lovers, with opportunities to snorkel with manta rays, swim with sea turtles, float above a coral garden bright with neon fish or peer into the crater of an active volcano.

Hawaiian culture is also in the spotlight. With stops at four islands — Molokai, Lanai, Maui and Hawaii (the Big Island) — you'll have ample time to explore. Cycle local villages, chase waterfalls, hike rainforests alive with birdsong or learn to make poi, Hawaii's beloved dish of mashed taro.

On board Safari Explorer are kayaks, paddleboards and a skiff to explore the dramatic coastline up close. Lounging on the ship's three decks has its own reward. You might spot cavorting dolphins or a humpback whale or two popping out of the sea to wave a fin hello.

Lindblad Expeditions in Baja Mexico

small ship cruises sea of cortez

Cruise the Sea of Cortez with Lindblad Expeditions, and you'll soon discover the magic of Baja Mexico from a team with more than 30 years of experience sailing this dazzling 2,500-mile coastline.

Itineraries of six to 15 days dive into this biodiverse landscape — described by Jacques Cousteau as nature's aquarium. Get up close to sea lions, rays, big fish and dolphins. Shore landings are no less awesome, hiking desert arroyos spiked with cactuses and islands clamorous with sea lions and squawking seabirds.

Whale watching is one of Baja's biggest draws, the sparkling waters filled with the spray and song of humpbacks, orcas and the rare blue whale. This is where California gray whales come to breed and huge whale sharks glide through shimmering seas. These encounters are memorable, but Lindblad goes one step further, with expeditions in local panga boats for up-close encounters with the gentle mamas and their calves.

Silversea Cruises in the Galapagos

small ship cruises sea of cortez

The Galapagos is the ultimate in adventure travel. This remote archipelago of 19 islands is carpeted with an astonishing 9,000 species of flora and fauna, many not found anywhere else in the world. It's here that Charles Darwin formulated his theory of evolution. More than 150 years later, not much has changed, except perhaps the mode of transport.

Cue Silversea Cruises ' Silver Origin, a luxe 50-suite ship with butler service and a decidedly Ecuadorian flavor found in the ship's food, team of Ecuadorian national expert guides and, of course, excursions. Off-ship expeditions will have you hiking ancient lava flows, snorkeling with huge fish and island hopping through primordial landscapes flush with blue- and red-footed boobies, sea lions and giant tortoises.

Drama is everywhere in the Galapagos — and not just the animal kind. Thirteen of the 21 volcanoes in the archipelago are active. With a little luck, your wilderness outing might include dress circle views of a volcano's billowing peak.

Aqua Expeditions in Raja Ampat

small ship cruises sea of cortez

Spend a week sailing Indonesia's Raja Ampat with Aqua Expeditions, and you could be forgiven for thinking you'd found paradise. Galaxies of karst islands drift above coral reefs alive with darting fish, pygmy seahorses, black-tipped reef sharks, octopuses and manta rays. The diving and snorkeling are out of this world.

So, too, is life on board Aqua Blu, a 30-passenger superyacht replete with a Jacuzzi, an outdoor barbeque and a Balinese spa. The former HMS Beagle is barefoot luxury at its best with a no-shoes policy for the entire seven-night cruise.

On board are diving and snorkeling gear, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, so you can explore this far-flung Southeast Asian archipelago at your own pace. On landings, unearth hidden lagoons and beaches, and go in search of the rare crimson bird of paradise. One thing is certain: Dropping anchor anywhere in this pristine archipelago of 1,500 islands promises nature writ large.

Aurora Expeditions in Costa Rica and the Panama Canal

small ship cruises sea of cortez

Slow-moving three-toed sloths, howler monkeys, toucans and crimson macaws are just some of the wonders of Costa Rica, a nation that lives and breathes sustainability. The newest cruise from eco-minded Aurora Expeditions tours the Central American country's Pacific coastline, diving into the heart of its greenest parks and wildlife reserves, including the small but popular Manuel Antonio National Park.

Panama is another highlight of this 10-night sailing (with a one-night pre-cruise stay in San Jose, Costa Rica). There are stops in the Pearl Islands and a visit to the Indigenous Indian tribes of Embera, a village deep in the rainforest. Miraflores Visitor Center — with the history of making the canal — is also fascinating.

Most cruises head straight through the canal, but Aurora runs expeditions in Gatun Lake, the 21-mile artificial waters that made the Panama Canal crossing possible. It's, of course, a warmup for the main event — a daylight crossing of the 51-mile engineering marvel that connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Captain Cook Cruises in Fiji

small ship cruises sea of cortez

Fiji's reputation for being one of the friendliest nations now extends to its cruise offerings, as it's the setting for the friendliest expedition ship, the 114-passenger MS Caledonian Sky. This recent addition to the Captain Cook Cruises fleet is crewed by locals, which means one thing — service with ebullient smiles and no end of welcoming bulas, the Fijian greeting for hello.

The seven-night Southern Lau itinerary takes in an archipelago, far from the high-end island resorts and "flop and drop'' beach holidays of more popular Denarau and Viti Levu. Each day brings two stops at an island or coral reef and visits to local villages and schools. Snorkel, dive with a qualified instructor, kayak or head out in the glass-bottomed boat. Island visits celebrate Fiji's vibrant culture with traditional dances and lovo feasts, banquets cooked using an earth oven.

Can't get enough? Book a two-week itinerary to trace the migratory path of the Tongan Tribe, the last humpback whales to be hunted. It's a rare opportunity to witness these majestic cetaceans soar and belly-flop into the air before blowing a final, salty kiss farewell.

Sea of Cortez Cruise – Baja Sur, Mexico with UnCruise

Super Pod of Dolphins - Sea of Cortez - Mexico

If we had just seen the two blue whales, it would’ve been enough. If we had just seen the pod of 200 dolphins, it would’ve been enough. If we had just seen the superpod of up to 2,000 dolphins, it would’ve been enough. The fact that we saw them all in the same afternoon cruising was way more than I was expecting. Welcome to an UnCruise Sea of Cortez cruise out of Baja, Mexico.

I have previously written about UnCruise, a small ship cruise line focusing on active adventure travel. This is a cruise ship with less than 100 passengers, where there are no formal dress nights and no napkin folding demonstrations. Instead, there is kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding, and hiking. We so enjoyed our cruise in southern Alaska so much that we put down money on another cruise out of Baja, Mexico to the Sea of Cortez.

Safari Endeavor - UnCruise

Jack Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez the aquarium of the world because of its rich and abundant sea life. Others have called it the Galapagos of the north .

Sea of Cortez - Mexico

Sea of Cortez

Set against the stark desert landscape of the Baja are the dark blue deep and cold waters of the Sea of Cortez. Because these waters are colder than you would expect (because of the depth), they are teaming with life. This attracts not just fish but dolphins, sea lions, and whales. We took this cruise in February because we wanted to see whales. Specifically, we wanted to see mother and baby whales.

The cruise starts out of San Jose Del Cabo at the tip of the Baja Peninsula. We boarded a bus for a 3 Hour Dr. to La Paz. The ship used to sail from San Jose Del Cabo to La Paz, but those can be rougher waters than the protected waters of the Sea of Cortez. The bus ride was much more enjoyable. Even on the bus ride to La Paz, we were able to spot the spouts of gray whales off the coast of Baja in the Pacific.

UnCruise - Safari Endeavor

Playa Bonanza

On Sunday, we were issued our wet suits in the morning. We did some snorkeling in the afternoon from the beach at Playa Bonanza and were glad for the wet suits. The water is quite cold, and submerging for the first time took your breath away, but after swimming for a bit, I found that I warmed up.

Bahía Agua Verde

Bahía Agua Verde

Monday, we stopped at Bahía Agua Verde, where one of the local ranchers met us with a pack of mules. He had traveled a day’s ride from his ranch to rendezvous with the ship. We hopped on a mule and took a ride up and over the hills on the coast into the interior. Our mules seemed to have a pecking order known only to them. My mule immediately decided that it would be right behind our guide, so it took off at the start and kept that position for the duration of the ride.

Kayaking - Bahía Agua Verde

At Los Gatos, in addition to the beach time, there was an opportunity to do an exploratory desert hike. “Exploratory” in the sense that there was no specific trail nor specific destination. We followed Mark from the ship’s excursion crew out into the desert. We were dropped off at one beach in the ships in an inflatable Seneca raft. Our plan was to eventually make it to the beach where the bar was set up. We followed a dirt road up from the inlet where we landed and then cut cross-country into the desert and up to one of the nearby mesas with a view of the surrounding countryside. We hiked down one of the arroyos and up over a sand dune until we found our way back to the beach. The less adventurous took a beach walk.

small ship cruises sea of cortez

The itinerary of the ship is not the same from week to week because as the wind changes, the ship may anchor in one bay vs. another or on the mainland vs. out on an island. The plans can even change hour by hour as the wind picks up or dies down.

Cruising for Critters

small ship cruises sea of cortez

That afternoon we went cruising, looking for wildlife which is the other factor that is unpredictable. Certainly, no one would have predicted the unusual day we had. First, it was spotting two blue whales. Blue whales are not uncommon in these waters, but the crew told us they usually see them for a couple of minutes, and then they are gone. These two whales fed along the surface of the water for about half an hour as we sailed nearby. They swam on one side, which meant that it looked like they were waving at the boat with one fin out of the water.

small ship cruises sea of cortez

When our new blue whale friends finally dove for deep waters, the spotters on the bridge saw a lot of bird activity on the surface of the water and had the captain steer towards it. A big flock of birds can be a sign of a bait ball, a big bunch of fish that have been herded together by a pod of dolphins. Sure enough, we soon found ourselves in a pod of 200 dolphins. There were dolphins jumping everywhere and numerous dolphins riding in our wake, as we could see on the bow cameras shown on one of the ship’s TV channels.

small ship cruises sea of cortez

200 dolphins are a lot of dolphins, but it was not until later when we found ourselves in a superpod of 2,000 dolphins spread out to the horizon, that the crew kept saying what an unusually special day we were having. Just to make things more perfect, the sun was setting, so we had a beautiful sunset silhouetting dolphins frolicking in the waters around the boat. It was amazing.

Magdalena Bay

Magdalena Bay - Baja Sur, Mexico

On Wednesday, we went to see the baby whales and their mothers at Magdalena Bay which is over on the Pacific side of the peninsula. This was the excursion that justified the whole trip. We rode a couple of hours across to the Pacific, stopping for one potty stop, which was also the only taste of wi-fi and internet that I had the entire trip. At Magdalena Bay, we got in small boats called pongas with local drivers and set out in search of whales. The bay is very long and narrow, so really it seems like it would be impossible to miss the whales.

Magdalena Bay - Baja Sur, Mexico

About half of the boats had a close encounter with one particular mother and calf that came right up to their boat to be petted. The rest of us had to be content with being 10 feet away from grey whales. I was content.

Los Islotes

small ship cruises sea of cortez

The next day at Los Islotes, our wildlife encounter was in the water. Many of us chose the snorkel excursion near a rock where sea lions hang out. You keep your distance from the sea lions, but they don’t have to follow the same rules. Especially for the first group of the day, they had a number of snout to mask encounters with sea lion pups. Before we got in the water, we had some safety instructions.

small ship cruises sea of cortez

We had to keep an eye on the male adult sea lions. Should they get territorial, we would need to back off in a hurry. They also told us that sea lion pups like to chew on things like a puppy, so try and keep your hands closer to your body, so they don’t look like chew toys. We managed to come back with the same number of fingers that we started our swim which I counted as a success.

Isle San Francisco

Isle San Francisco

In the afternoon, I went on one of the most ambitious exploratory hikes of the trip at Isle San Francisco. We hiked to the top of the island with great views of the crescent-shaped beaches below. It was a workout but gave you a great sense of accomplishment.

small ship cruises sea of cortez

And then, before we knew it, our week-long adventure was over. We loved our trip on the Safari Endeavor in Baja as much or more as we did our week in Alaska. The crew was still amazing. The cabins are spartan, and there is no waterslide or spa on the boat (although they did offer everyone an included massage). The food was great, but it is really the wildlife and the scenery that will make this trip one to remember for years to come.

The Best New Small-Ship Cruises to Book in 2024

A uthentic. It was Merriam Webster's top searched word for 2023 and one that has dominated the travel vernacular in recent years. And while many would not necessarily associate the word with ocean cruising , the growth in popularity of small-ship cruises-particularly sailings with 500 guests or fewer-indicates that in the cruising world, passengers are seeking a more intimate, less crowded, and yes, arguably more authentic sailing experience.

Take expedition cruising , for example. As the number of adventure-focused ships and yachts has exploded in recent years, these cruises are no longer just about extreme voyages in polar regions. They are also about offering a deeper look into the culture, food, history, and environmental fragility of remote wonders of the world.

Although there isn't a huge number of new small ships being introduced, there are a few notable vessels that have either recently launched or are launching this year with a focus on the idea that smaller is not just better, but more sustainable, too. These new small-ship cruises bring with them some exciting and more immersive new itineraries to destinations both warm and wintry that have us ready to pack our bags and sail away.

Sea Cloud Cruises' "Sea Cloud Spirit"

  • Suggested itinerary: Reset your mind and body on an eight-night sailing through Spain's Canary Islands and on to Morocco on a special cruise featuring experts in restorative health. Pricing starts at $4,895 per person.

What's more authentic-and sustainable-than setting sail on a tall ship where the sails are hoisted up each day by hand? Although not technically new (it was launched in 2021), the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit and its two sister ships, Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II , are upping their game in a push to introduce Sea Cloud Cruises' unique product to North American travelers. The German company has traditionally catered to German and British passengers. As part of its effort to expand its reach and appeal, Sea Cloud is adding wellness programs with daily onboard yoga and guest fitness gurus, in addition to special food- and wine-focused sailings with well-known chefs making appearances. Sea Cloud Spirit , the largest of the three-ship fleet with 69 cabins, was meticulously designed to pay homage to the original Sea Cloud , which was the world's largest private sailing yacht when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton had it built in 1931 for his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post.

The Sea Cloud Spirit combines the experience of decades of traditional seamanship with the modern-day luxuries of a private yacht. Cabins range from 172-square-foot single cabins to 300-square-foot balcony suites with soaking tubs. There's a large fitness center and spa, which has a steam room, sauna, and thermal area for two; indoor and outdoor lounges; and a main dining area, plus a more casual bistro. The action, however, is out on deck, where passengers can stargaze at night or simply gaze in awe at the impressive sails blowing in the wind.

Atlas Ocean Voyages' "World Navigator"

  • Suggested itinerary: Go searching for Arctic wildlife on a 12-night cruise from Reykjavík, which sails along the eastern coast of Greenland and to Longyearbyen in the Svalbard archipelago, one of the world's northernmost inhabited areas and home to polar bears, reindeer, arctic foxes, and other Nordic wildlife. Pricing starts at $6,499 per person.

World Navigator , which sailed its maiden voyage in Antarctica this past November, is the third vessel to join the fleet of one of the newest players in small-ship expedition cruising, Atlas Ocean Voyages. The company's 100-cabin expedition yachts are almost identical and provide a hybrid of sorts between traditional expedition and luxury cruising. Cabins are spacious, almost all with balconies, desks, and seating areas. The bathrooms have glass-mosaic tiled showers with rain showerheads, wall jets, and even benches.

Everything on the ship-including the sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows-is designed to provide maximum views. The ships also have spacious pool decks with two hot tubs, a fitness center overlooking the sea, a spa, and water toys like kayaks and paddleboards. There's even extreme camping gear for those willing to brave an overnight under the stars in Antarctica. During North American winters, all three of Atlas's expedition yachts sail in Antarctica. With the addition of World Navigator , the company is launching more Arctic Circle cruises during the North American summers while also adding a host of new epicurean and cultural expeditions in South America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and northern Europe this year.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's "Ilma"

  • Suggested itinerary: Spend a little extra time in port on a 10-day sailing from Barcelona to Lisbon, which has three overnight stays, in Palma de Mallorca and Malaga in Spain, and in Lisbon, Portugal, one of Europe's oldest cities. Pricing starts at $10,600 per person.

Another newcomer to luxury small-ship cruising is the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, which debuts its second ship, the Ilma , this year. With 224 suites, the ship is larger than the original Ritz-Carlton yacht, the 149-suite Evrima , which launched in October 2022. On the Ilma , all the suites will have private terraces, including a two-story suite with soaking tub; the coveted, 1,000-square-foot owner's suite has a private outdoor whirlpool. Even the smallest suites are not all that small, at 300 square feet, and come with a personal concierge and 24-hour room service. The yacht boasts what Ritz-Carlton says is the highest ratio of space per guest at sea.

And you can expect to find the same meticulous service standards that you would find at Ritz-Carlton resorts throughout the world as the line aims to impress hotel guests seeking a luxury hotel experience at sea. Onboard are five dining venues, including S.E.A., a European tasting experience designed by chef Sven Elverfeld of Aqua, the three Michelin-starred restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton in Wolfsburg, Germany; Talaat Nam, featuring Southeast Asian cuisine and a sushi bar; and Mistral, a casual come-as-you-are alfresco grill with a Mediterranean-inspired menu. Light bites are served at the marina at the aft of the ship, where you can also hop on a borrowed paddleboard. Oh, and did we mention there are two outdoor pools, too?

Book a terrace suite on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's newest vessel, Ilma , launching in 2024.
