Free seniors and veterans bus travel extended to weekends

Gold Coast seniors and veterans can now access local Surfside buses for free every day of the week.

Mayor Tom Tate said the expansion of the Free Seniors Travel program to include weekends was timely given the upcoming holiday season.

“With more than 40,000 people already registered for the program, this is a great outcome for our seniors,” said Mayor Tate.

“The program currently enables seniors and veterans to travel for free weekdays between 8.30am and 3.30pm. The extended program will also allow free travel all day long on Saturday and Sunday.

“This initiative improves the quality of life for some of our more vulnerable citizens and empowers them to travel independently every day of the week. This is great news leading in to the holiday season.

“Since the program began in 2013, more than six million trips have been made by Gold Coast seniors and veterans on Surfside buses.  “It is important that we ensure our seniors and veterans have a safe, accessible, comfortable and affordable way to travel across the city.”

Free bus travel for seniors and veterans forms part of the City’s Road Safety Plan and is a key initiative of the Gold Coast City Transport Strategy 2031.

Reducing demand on the city’s road network is a key focus for the Gold Coast City Transport Strategy 2031.

To be eligible for free bus travel, passengers must hold a TransLink Seniors red go card or a Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) gold or white card, be a Gold Coast resident and complete an application.

Registered veterans and seniors are provided with a sticker to attach to their go card which they simply show to the bus driver when they board. You can download an application form at cityofgoldcoast.com.au/freebustravel, collect one from a City Customer Service Centre or phone 1300 GOLDCOAST (1300 465 326) and one will be mailed to you.

Note: Free Seniors and Veterans Bus Travel on the Gold Coast does not apply on Queensland Rail trains or on G:Link light rail services.

Gold Coast City Council votes to continue free bus travel for seniors

A COUNCIL trial of free travel for seniors on Gold Coast public transport has been extended.

Don't miss out on the headlines from Gold Coast. Followed categories will be added to My News.

The State Government has signed off to continue the council trial, which allows seniors to ride on Surfside buses for free between 8.30am and 3.30pm daily.

More than 14,500 people have signed up for the service since it launched in September last year.

It was originally expected to end on Monday, but the council voted to continue the service following the overwhelming response.

The trial will continue until August 29 when councillors will consider whether the service will become permanent.

The light rail will be exempt from the free travel service when it comes online in June.

The council yesterday voted to send out a survey to registered seniors seeking feedback.

The current Free Seniors Bus Travel Initiative is set to finish 28 August 2015. Will it continue past this date?

The recently adopted City Budget 2015/16 has committed enough funds for the initiative to continue until 30 June 2016.

However, as the City funds this initiative in conjunction with Surfside Buses and Translink, it is up to the State Government to have the final say on whether it can continue.

Mayor Tom Tate has recently written to the Deputy Premier and Transport Minister, Hon Jackie Tradd MP urging her to extend the trial.

What can I do to help make sure Free Seniors Bus Travel Initiative continues?

Complete the online survey on this page. There is also the option to share with us online any positive stories you have from using the service.

How will I know if Free Seniors Bus Travel Initiative is going to continue?

If the State Government approves Free Seniors Bus Travel Initiative to continue, Mayor Tom Tate will write and email all registered users letting them know.

Experience Gold Coast Launches Sneeky Mid-Week Campaign Via Dentsu Queensland

free travel for seniors gold coast

Experience Gold Coast is making a play for mid-week travel with its latest tourism campaign, delivered via Dentsu Queensland .

Sneeky Mid-Weeky targets holidaymakers who have more flexibility to travel mid-week including solo travellers, couples, groups of friends or parents wanting a kid-free getaway.

The catchy Sneeky Mid-Weeky tagline is further bolstered by compelling bookable offers across accommodation, airlines, and experiences available exclusively to those who travel mid-week.

Experience Gold Coast CEO John Warn said the brand-new campaign aims to increase Monday-to-Thursday visitation by driving conversion through compelling mid-week deals.

“In an exceptionally competitive travel market, Sneeky Mid-Weeky is designed to not only surprise and delight our largest interstate markets with cut-through messaging and exclusive offers, but also to expand into a lucrative new market segment of travellers without kids,” Warn said.

“Travellers without kids are one of the fastest growing domestic visitor segments. In fact, since 2010 the national market share has grown over 98 per cent and in the last year alone this segment had a solid 40 per cent share of national overnight holiday visitors.

“While the Gold Coast remains popular on weekends and school holidays, our single biggest growth opportunity domestically is to unlock mid-week travel.

“Deploying this tactic in Sydney and Melbourne not only ensures the Gold Coast smooths demand as a year round destination of choice but also helps to drive a more sustainable visitor economy overall.

“With the intent to turn Sneeky Mid-Weeky into a verb, the Gold Coast will soon be synonymous for a mid week trip.”

The extensive interstate campaign will be promoted over the coming months across out-of-home, broadcast, social and digital media, and display advertising.

Experience Gold Coast worked with Dentsu Queensland (media agency) and Publicis Worldwide (creative agency) to bring the campaign to life.

Managing director of Dentsu Queensland Chris Ernst said, “This campaign is a wonderful example of collaboration and the combination of critical business insight with consumer insight. The result: a creative media strategy designed to intercept moments of routine and spark interest in a mid-week trip to the Gold Coast.”

Sneeky Mid-Weeky is supported by Tourism and Events Queensland through the Contestable Funding Program.
