Cruise ship passenger who fell overboard off Hawaii remembered as ‘kind’ soul

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Family members are remembering the Australian man who fell overboard on a Hawaii-bound cruise ship as a “kind, beautiful, gentle soul.”

The man has been identified as Warwick Tollemache, 35, of Brisbane.

The Coast Guard suspended the search for Tollemache on Thursday. Officials said he fell overboard on the Quantum of the Seas about 11 p.m. Tuesday ― while the ship was about 500 miles south of Kona.

The crew of the cruise ship remained on scene to search for approximately two hours, deploying six life rings.

On Wednesday morning, a Coast Guard aircrew deployed.

The Quantum of the Seas left Brisbane about two weeks ago and will dock in Honolulu on Friday.

The family issued the following statement about Tollemache:

“Our family is heartbroken at the loss of our beloved Warwick. He was a kind, beautiful, and gentle soul who was adored by everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed. We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time.”

Search suspended for cruise ship passenger who fell overboard off Hawaii

Royal Caribbean's the Quantum of the Seas.

Coast Guard crews have suspended the search for an Australian cruise ship passenger off the coast of Hawaii following a report of a person overboard, officials said Thursday.

“After reviewing all relevant information of the case and discussing it with the next of kin, the Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend the active search for the passenger aboard the Quantum of the Seas,” said Kevin Cooper, a search and rescue mission coordinator for the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu.

The cruise ship Quantum of the Seas reported a person overboard at 11:03 p.m. Tuesday local time to the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu, the Coast Guard said in a news release Wednesday.

“The crew of the cruise ship remained on scene to search for approximately two hours, deploying six life rings,” the release said.

On Wednesday, an air search with the Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point C-130 Hercules aircrew launched at 7 a.m. and arrived on scene at 9 a.m. local time, searching about 500 miles south of Kailua-Kona, Big Island.

After six hours the crew returned to the air station for fuel replenishment. Officials said said Thursday that the search had been suspended.

A spokesperson for Royal Caribbean confirmed that a passenger went overboard.

"The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is working closely with local authorities," the spokesperson said.

The sprawling cruise ship has 16 decks and fits 4,905 guests and 1,500 crew members, according to its website .

Quantum of the Seas departed Brisbane, Australia, on April 12 and is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu on Friday.

Search suspended for man overboard on cruise ship hundreds of miles away from Hawaii

The Australian man had been missing since Tuesday night.

The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday it has suspended its search for a cruise ship passenger from Australia who went overboard a few hundred miles off the coast of Hawaii.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:03 p.m. Tuesday night, when the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu received a report from the Quantum of the Seas cruise ship that a man had gone overboard about 500 miles south of Kailua Kona, Big Island, according to the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point C-130 Hercules aircrew launched at 7 a.m. on Wednesday morning and arrived on the scene at approximately 9 a.m. but did not have any luck finding the missing man after completing five searches.

The search resumed Thursday morning, before the Coast Guard announced it has suspended the active search later that day.

"After reviewing all relevant information of the case and discussing with our Australian consulate counterparts as well as with the next of kin, the Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend the active search for the passenger aboard the Quantum of the Seas," Kevin Cooper, a search and rescue mission coordinator for the Joint Rescue Coordination Center Honolulu, said in a statement.

Brisbane man missing after falling overboard from Quantum of the Seas cruise ship near Hawaii, US Coast Guard confirms

The US Coast Guard said it will resume its search at first light on Friday morning local time, for a Brisbane man who went overboard from a cruise ship off Hawaii on Wednesday night.

Key points:

  • Life rings, search vessels, and lights were used overnight to try to locate the missing man
  • A fellow passenger described the ordeal as "very traumatic and sad"
  • Royal Caribbean staff have been described as "amazing" throughout the process

The ship, the Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas, halted its course after the incident, which took place about 500 nautical miles south of Hawaii's Big Island, and took part in the initial search for about two hours.

The cruise ship has since continued its course.

Aimee West, from Mount Isa, and her partner were on the cruise.

"There was a lot of commotion on the boat. It all started at about 9pm," she told ABC North West.

"There were a few medical emergencies so the loudspeaker was going off quite a lot.

"At about 11pm, midnight, we observed the vessel slowing down and turning around on our maps.

"We saw about five life rings that were floating in the ocean and there were search vessels and lots of lights on the water.

the top deck of a cruise ship taken from a window

"They broadcast several times that there was a suspected man overboard situation and that the crews were following their procedures.

"They requested all guests return to their cabins and account for all their members and if someone was missing, to call 911 on our emergency systems here if we were missing a passenger.

"We were messaging our friends to make sure they had everyone in their party.

"To be real, for me personally it was very surreal and quite sad. It was quite confronting, we were all out trying to spot anything to help the staff.

"But it was very sad going to bed, that's for sure."

The mood on the ship was quite sombre, Ms West said.

"You can tell the crew is trying to do their best to keep spirits up for everyone else on board for the rest of their trip.

"Everyone kind of realises it's very traumatic and sad and you feel for the families involved.

"We were awake until about 1.30am and they were still searching."

Brad Hardy, from Mount Isa, said he was on deck 14 of the cruise ship when he heard the emergency broadcast.

"All the staff just dropped everything and ran to every possible vantage point on the ship," Mr Hardy said.

"We looked out of the window up on the deck and [saw] a lot of life preservers … the big rings were getting thrown overboard, at least eight or nine of those got thrown overboard.

"The ship slowed right down and then did a hard turn to the left and doubled back.

"The search lights were on from the ship's bridge as well, they rapidly deployed their 'runabout' rescue vessel off the ship and then spent the next couple of hours in the water searching around.

"Probably around 1am we started moving again.

Gayle Doe, from New South Wales, is also on board and described the ordeal as "scary and unsettling".

"We were sitting at the bar at 11 o'clock last night when we heard 'Oscar, Oscar, Oscar' which is the code for man overboard," Ms Doe said.

"There were a lot of announcements, telling us that the ship was being turned around, most people could feel the ship had changed course, it was a bit bumpy in the water.

"The crew went into their training mode, they threw lifebuoys out into the sea and they deployed their … lifesaving boats.

"Of course, it was night-time – it was black, so they had lots of spotlights on the ocean … but weren't successful [in finding the man].

"We've been told the coast guard and helicopters are still out searching in the ocean, in the area where the man went."

a photo taken from the side of a cruise ship looking down at the water

She said there was "a lot of sadness" on board the ship on Thursday.

"There are people who have been crying," Ms Doe said.

She said the cruise ship captain had been providing regular updates over the loudspeaker and had just confirmed there would be no further updates.

Cruise staff 'amazing'

Ms West said the Royal Caribbean cruise staff "were amazing" and have kept all passengers updated throughout the ordeal.

"We even witnessed staff when, we were in Tahiti [earlier], practising retrievals in the water," she said.

"The staff were all out on safety posts, there was not a space or inch on the boat where there wasn't a staff member shining a torch in the water."

The Honolulu Command Centre has confirmed that the person missing is an Australian man, but provided no further details.

A Royal Caribbean Cruise Line spokesperson confirmed the Quantum of the Seas departed Brisbane on April 12 and is scheduled to arrive in Honolulu on April 28.

"While on its trans-Pacific sailing, a guest onboard Quantum of the Seas went overboard," the spokesperson said.

"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is working closely with local authorities."

Police received a report at 8:40 a.m. this morning that Schwalbe was last seen at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Schwalbe could not be located during a search of the vessel, prompting the ship’s security personnel to notify local authorities.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified, and a maritime search was initiated. Hawaii Police Department detectives responded to the scene at Hilo Harbor.

Officers reviewed video surveillance footage taken at 4:18 a.m. this morning from a camera positioned on the exterior of the ninth deck of the ship. The footage depicted a person believed to be Schwalbe falling from the ship.

Based on the time of the video footage combined with the ship’s coordinates, it was determined by the ship’s captain the vessel was approximately eight miles offshore Hilo when the incident occurred.

Detectives are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the police department’s nonemergency line at (808) 935-3311.

No photo of the missing man was immediately available, according to police.

An urgent appeal has been made to ships in the Pacific Ocean to assist in the desperate search for an Australian man who fell off a Hawaii-bound cruise ship as the aerial search is halted.

The man was holidaying on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship “Quantum of the Seas” before the nightmare unfolded overnight 1400 kilometres south of Hawaii.

The ship departed from a Brisbane port on April 12 and was sailing through the Pacific Ocean near the island of Honolulu when the man was reported missing, two days prior to its arrival in Hawaii.

“The ship‘s crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is working closely with local authorities,” Quantum of the Seas said in a statement on Thursday.

The cruise ship stayed in the area for a couple of hours before handing over the search to an aerial search team.

While the US Coast Guard has been combing the area, it has now also issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast, alerting all vessels south of Hawaii to help look for the man.

The Coast Guard also called the US Navy for aid after it was forced to turn back its C-130 Hercules to Hawaii to refuel, halting its six-hour search.

Cruise passenger Georgina Thompson described the harrowing moment she realised something had gone wrong.

“We were in bed and we heard it come over the PA system someone singing out “Oscar, Oscar, Oscar” and then that's when everything started to happen,” she told the Today show.

She said her husband got out of bed and went out to the deck where he saw massive lights shining onto the ocean and multiple small boats.

“We didn’t know at that time what was going on,” she said.

Ms Thompson said the mood on-board the cruise ship was “sombre” on Thursday morning, as passengers discussed the shocking news over breakfast.

The cruise ship has now set sail for the Hawaiian Islands where they are due to arrive on Friday.

Authorities have reportedly confirmed to 9 News that the aircraft will continue its search for the man at dawn.

The identity of the man is not yet known, nor how he fell overboard.

The search for an Australian man who went overboard from a cruise ship in a remote area of the Pacific has been called off for the day, after a US Coast Guard plane exhausted its fuel supply.

A passenger went overboard from Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas before 11pm Tuesday night, local time, two days before it was due to arrive in Honolulu. The ship left Brisbane on 12 April and was about 900km south of Hawaii at the time of the incident.

The ship launched a search and rescue operation which lasted two hours. The US Coast Guard received the report from Royal Caribbean at 1am Hawaii time, and launched a Hercules aircraft at 7am Wednesday which reached the search area at 9am. The US Coast Guard is preparing to resume the search at first light on Thursday morning local time.

Spokesperson for the 14th district coast guard based in Honolulu, Ryan Fisher, said the Hercules was the only asset on the scene conducting a search.

The plane completed five search patterns, which involved tracking drift patterns in the ocean using locator beacons, but was unable to find the man.

With six hours’ of fuel, the plane ended its search at 3pm local time, Fisher said. Search efforts will resume the next morning.

No other aircraft were available to continue the search, including the US navy, who were contacted, Fisher said. The coast guard issued an urgent call to any ships in the area that might be able to help.

Fisher confirmed the Australian went overboard 500 nautical miles (926km) south of Hawaii’s Big Island.

Georgina Thompson , a passenger on board the Quantum of the Seas, said she and her husband were in bed when they heard “Oscar Oscar Oscar” – Royal Caribbean’s emergency code for man overboard .

Thompson told Nine’s Today Show she and her husband then went out on their deck to see the lights and lifeboats deployed, but at the time didn’t know what was happening.

“The light started searching along the outside of the ship, shining along the outside right down the bottom. We were watching it. It lit up the whole ocean. Well, most of the ocean. But it was very dark.”

“You just knew that something was wrong.”

Thompson said her husband thought the ship had stopped because it hit something, “but then we realised that there was someone overboard.”

The mood at breakfast the next morning she said was “very sombre”.

Two travel bloggers on board the Quantum of the Seas recounted on Instagram that they felt the ship turning around shortly after 11pm and an announcement was made for passengers to return to their cabins and make sure all their party were accounted for.

They said a final announcement was made at 12.30am that the ship would reopen and passengers could leave their cabins.

Gale Doyle, another passenger told ABC news she knew the calls of “Oscar Oscar Oscar” meant a person was overboard because she has been cruising extensively.

“Eventually they started calling a person’s name, it was a male. They called the person’s name several times so we assumed this person is the missing person,” Doyle said.

The passengers had received no news about the man the next morning, she said.

Family of Warwick Tollemache releases tribute as search for the Australian man who went overboard cruise ship Quantum of the Seas is suspended

An Australian man who went overboard a cruise ship has been identified, with his devastated family sharing a heartbreaking tribute to the “kind, beautiful, and gentle soul”.

Yashee Sharma

The Australian man who fell overboard a cruise ship enroute to Hawaii has been identified as Warwick Tollemache.

Crews on board the Quantum of the Seas conducted an immediate search for the 35-year-old about 11pm on Tuesday evening (local time).

The search was suspended on Thursday after the ship’s crew, the United States Coast Guard and the US Navy failed to locate him in the water during a large-scale hunt.

A widespread amber alert was also sent out via radio to notify nearby ships in the effort to find Mr Tollemache.

The victim of the Quantum of the Seas cruise cruise ship drowning has been revealed as Brisbane man Warwick Tollemache.

His family devastated family confirmed he had fallen overboard and remembered him as a "gentle soul" in an emotional statement.

“Our family is heartbroken at the loss of our beloved Warwick,” his mother Mandy Tollemache wrote to social media.

“He was a kind, beautiful, and gentle soul who was adored by everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed.

“We kindly ask for privacy during this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding.”

Coast Guard search and rescue coordinator Kevin Cooper said the “difficult decision” to suspend the search came after discussions with his family.

“After reviewing all relevant information of the case and discussing it with the next of kin, the Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend the active search for the passenger aboard the Quantum of the Seas,” he said in a statement.

Royal Caribbean Cruises, who operate the cruise ship, said their “deepest sympathies” were with his loved ones.

“While on its trans-pacific sailing, a guest onboard Quantum of the Seas went overboard,” it said in an earlier statement.

“The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and worked closely with local authorities.

“Out of respect for the family, we will not share further details about this unfortunate event. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his loved ones at this time.”

Search suspended for man overboard ship due to ‘vastness of the Pacific’

While it is unclear how Mr Tollemache fell, passenger Ken Carcas told Sky News Australia, according to multiple other passengers, “two crew him saw him go overboard"

"A lady heard a scream, went out onto the balcony and saw him drop past, hit the tender below and fall into the water," he said on Thursday.

He added the captain immediately made an announcement and begun the search.

Maritime lawyer James Walker on Friday revealed to Sky News Australia that he believed the cruise ship did not have an Automatic Man Overboard System.

“In the US, there’s legislation requiring cruise ships to have automatic man overboard systems – notifying them that someone’s gone over the rails,” he told Peter Stefanovic.

“Through infrared technology and radar technology, they can actually track the person in the water. This particular ship – it did not have a man overboard system.

“This specific cruise line also has a policy not to permit the captain to turn the ship around until they first notify the home headquarters here in Miami, advising them that there’s been a man overboard before they can begin search and rescue operations.”

The cruise ship Quantum of the Seas has since arrived at Kona, a Hawaii island, after departing from Brisbane on April 12.

Passengers disembarked for some time at the tourist destination before boarding again to arrive at the final stop of Honolulu on Friday.

The tragedy followed the death of a woman on board the same cruise, after she suffered a medical emergency in an unrelated incident.

A cruise ship's search for an Australian man who fell overboard has been suspended and the liner has now resumed its course to Hawaii.

A desperate search was launched for the man when he fell from the Quantum of the Seas about 1,400km south of Hawaii on Wednesday at around 11pm AEST.

A Hercules aircraft fitted with GPS and cameras will continue the search for the man from the skies.

The ship departed Brisbane on April 12 and had been due to dock in Honolulu on Friday after stopping at the Pacific island of Tahiti, cruise operator Royal Caribbean said.

It was initially thought that the man who went overboard was the partner of a passenger who died on the vessel during a medical emergency - but this is not the case and the two incidents are unrelated, the company has confirmed.

Shocked passengers recalled how they were ordered to return to their cabins and ensure all travelling companions were accounted for before being allowed to leave their rooms 90 minutes later.

Bright lights were used in the desperate late-night search for the passenger as a US Coast Guard Hercules helicopter was deployed to scour the ocean from above.

The US Navy has also been called in to assist in the large-scale search.

The man's identity and how he went overboard is not yet known at this early stage.

Tracking data shows the cruise stopped after the passenger went overboard but has since resumed its voyage and is now heading to Hawaii's Kona Island.

One man with family on the ship said the missing passenger was believed to be the partner of someone who died on board the ship following a medical emergency.

'There was a show during the night, and the music stopped before it was announced there was a medical emergency, and apparently the person passed away' he told 2GB breakfast radio host Ben Fordham on Thursday.

'About 90 minutes later, the call went out that someone went overboard, and it turned out to be the partner of the person who passed away earlier.'

The man said his wife, daughters and stepson on board the ship were left devastated by the incident.

However, a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean has since confirmed the medical incident and fall were unrelated.

'While on its trans-pacific sailing, a guest onboard Quantum of the Seas went overboard,' the company said in a statement.

'The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is working closely with local authorities.

'Out of respect for the family, we will not share further details about this unfortunate event.'

Fordham also read out an email sent by a listener onboard who recalled how the vessel stopped and turned around about 11pm on Wednesday night.

'It was very dark, search lights scanned the sea, rescue boats deployed, everyone confined to cabins,' Fordham read.

'The captain called on the PA an hour later for a gentleman to present himself to guest services. Everyone was out on their balcony.'

'The search went on until around 1.30am. Rescue boats were brought back on board. Search lights continued for another 10 minutes, then the ship seemed to steam off slowly.'

The passenger added that the incident was all over the ship's social media.

'Some saying cameras on deck saw him go over, others saying crew has confirmed a passenger did go over last night and there was only so much they could do,' Fordham read.

Passenger Georgina Thompson and her husband were in bed when they heard the call 'Oscar, Oscar, Oscar' — the cruise ship line's code for 'man overboard'.

'There were lights, you know, the big lights shining on the ocean,' she told the Today show.

'And also there were a couple of boats out there in the water.'

'Then I got up and I went out to see what was happening. We didn't know at that time what was going on.'

'My husband thought we might have hit something or something like that, the way the ship stopped, but then we realised that there was someone overboard. No-one said anything at that time.'

Ms Thompson said the tragedy had rattled fellow passengers and crew.

'We went to breakfast this morning and everyone was very sombre,' she said.

'I feel very sad for whoever it was.'

Newlywed Aimee West, who is on her honeymoon on board the ship, assured family and friends she and her new husband were safe after a 'pretty interesting night'.

'Matt and I are safe, yes this is our cruise and we witnessed the attempts to locate the Australian man in the middle of the ocean and at night,' she posted on Facebook.

'I can't say enough about the crew on Royal Caribbean International, professional and continued to provide us updates when they could.'

Ms West was among several guests who have shared footage of the frantic search on social media.

'We were all out on balconies trying to help spot the man but it was just too dark. The water itself was pretty flat so I am hoping this assists with rescue,' she wrote

Passengers have since been addressed on the PA by the ship captain, who issued his condolences but advised he wouldn't be revealing any further details out of respect for the missing man.

'This morning he gave us an update on what happened last night is correct, that the Coast Guard has started the search in the air and in the sea and that he won't be making any more addresses to this situation,' passenger Debbie told Fordham.

She added the whole atmosphere on the ship had changed.

'People are crying. It's all very sad,' Debbie said.

A day earlier, guests were full of praise for the Anzac Day dawn service held on the cruise ship just north of the Equator for the large  contingent of Australians on board.

'The crew did an absolutely fantastic job with this service,' one woman posted said.

Another added: 'An awesome ceremony by Royal Caribbean, one I wont forget. The staff and guests were awesome, with those onboard very much appreciative of their efforts.'

Royal Caribbean Cruises has confirmed a passenger had gone overboard.

'The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue operation and is working closely with local authorities,' it said in a statement.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Royal Caribbean Cruises for further comment.

Man falls overboard from cruise ship at sea offshore of Big Island

A 59-year-old man fell overboard while on a cruise ship at sea early the morning of Aug. 11 and Big Island police are investigating.

The missing man, identified as Kenneth Schwalbe of California, is described as 5-foot-5, 140 pounds with brown hair.

Police received a report at 8:40 a.m. Friday morning that Schwalbe was last seen at 8:30 p.m. Aug. 10. A search of the vessel yielded negative results, prompting the ship’s security personnel to notify Big Island authorities.

The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and a maritime search was initiated. The ship was slated to dock in Hilo. Detectives from the Hawai‘i Police Department Area I Criminal Investigation Section responded to the scene at the Hilo port.

Officers reviewed video surveillance footage taken at 4:18 a.m. Aug. 11 by a camera on the exterior of the ninth deck of the ship. The footage showed a person thought to be Schwalbe falling from the ship.

Based on the time of the video footage combined with the ship’s coordinates, it was determined by the ship’s captain that the vessel was approximately 8 miles offshore of Hilo when the incident occurred.

Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigation Section are continuing this investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 808-935-3311.

No photo of the missing man is available at this time.

MARK GARFINKEL/THE BOSTON HERALD VIA ASSOCIATED PRESS

The cruise ship Norwegian Dawn is docked, in May 2015, at the Black Falcon Terminal in Boston. The U.S.-owned cruise ship with more than 3,000 passengers and crew onboard was finally allowed to dock in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, today, having been quarantined offshore over fears of an outbreak of the cholera disease onboard.

CAPE TOWN, South Africa >> A U.S.-owned luxury cruise ship with more than 3,000 passengers and crew was allowed to dock today in the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius after being quarantined offshore for a day over fears of a possible cholera outbreak onboard, authorities said.

The Mauritius government cleared the Norwegian Dawn, which is owned and run by the Miami-based Norwegian Cruise Line company, to dock at the harbor in the capital, Port Louis, after health officials found no traces of cholera in tests conducted on the ship’s water.

Mauritius authorities blocked the ship from docking Sunday because 15 people onboard were ill with vomiting and diarrhea. The Mauritius Ports Authority said it took the decision “in order to avoid any health risks,” and sent officials onboard to collect samples to test.

The Mauritius government said the sick passengers who had been isolated after falling ill in fact had mild cases of the viral infection gastroenteritis.

Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement that there were “a small number of guests experiencing mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness” and there were “no confirmed cases nor any evidence of cholera.”

The Mauritius government “required testing in an overabundance of caution,” it added.

Several countries in mainland southern Africa have experienced serious outbreaks of cholera over the last year, possibly leading to concern from authorities in Mauritius, an island nation of about 1.2 million people off the east coast of Africa that’s a popular tourist destination.

Cruise ships were problematic during the COVID-19 pandemic, with many of them reporting outbreaks of that disease and having to be quarantined at ports.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says there’s a cholera epidemic in southern Africa, with a total of around 188,000 cases and 3,000 deaths in eight countries since January 2023.

Cholera spreads through food or water contaminated with the bacteria that causes it. Health officials were also testing the food onboard the Norwegian Dawn for cholera. Those tests results hadn’t yet come back but authorities said they were satisfied that there was no cholera threat after the water tests were negative.

There were 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members onboard the Norwegian Dawn when it arrived in Mauritius, the ports authority said. Around 2,000 of those passengers were due to disembark in Mauritius and end their cruise and 2,279 new passengers were due to get onboard.

Everyone leaving the ship would still be screened by health officials, said Dr Bhooshun Ori, the director of health services at the Mauritius ministry of health.

Norwegian Cruise Line said passengers would now disembark the ship on Tuesday.

The 964-feet long Norwegian Dawn has 14 decks, with a casino, a theater and a video game arcade among its facilities.

A regular cabin starts at around $2,000 per person for a 12-day cruise, according to the company’s website. For $47,000, you can have a 3-bedroom Garden Villa that comes with a private garden, a hot tub, an outdoor dining area and your own butler service.

US Coast Guard suspends search for Australian man seen falling from cruise

The grieving partner of an Australian man who fell to his suspected death from a cruise ship travelling to Hawaii has shared her devastation over the search being called off.

Brisbane man Warwick Tollemache, 35, fell overboard from the Royal Caribbean Quantum of the Seas ship in the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday night, sparking a major air and sea search.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: US Coast Guard suspends search for Australian man seen falling from cruise.

After searching through Thursday and for more than six hours on Friday, the US Coast Guard made the “difficult decision” to suspend the operation.

His girlfriend Celine La Roche said she had been clinging to hopes Tollemache could still be alive.

La Roche told The Courier-Mail she had been dating Tollemache “on and off” for six years.

“They should have kept looking – I don’t understand why they stopped the search,” she said.

“I’m just devastated.”

She shared her heartache on social media earlier, telling a friend Tollemache was “lost at sea”.

“I love you, always have and always will. RIP my love,” she said in an online tribute.

‘Near impossible’ conditions

Tollemache fell overboard while the ship was about 800km south of Kailua-Kona on the west coast of O’ahu, also known as Big Island, at 11pm on Tuesday (Wednesday night AEST).

Despite desperate search efforts involving beacons, buoys and rescue crafts, crews were unable to find any sight of him.

“The Coast Guard has made the difficult decision to suspend the active search for the passenger aboard the Quantum of the Seas,” search and rescue mission co-ordinator Kevin Cooper said on Friday.

Cooper said the decision came after discussions with Tollemache’s family and Australian authorities.

With the combination of the 16-storey fall, exhaustion, dehydration and hyperthermia, “the chances of survival are very, very small”, survival expert and physiologist professor Michael Tipton told 7NEWS.

“As time progresses, you’ve got drift patterns that are making where the person might be and more unpredictable.”

Huge swells overnight made conditions “near impossible” to find Tollemache, the coast guard said.

Passengers, however, had held out hope search parties would defy the odds.

They disembarked the ship when it came into berth at Kona, Hawaii on Friday, telling 7NEWS it was a “horrible feeling” on board.

“We went onto our balcony and saw the searchlights and were sort of sitting there praying and hoping he’d be found,” one woman said.

Loved ones paid tribute to the 35-year-old on social media on Friday, with mother Mandy Tollemache sharing her family’s anguish.

“Our family is heartbroken at the loss of our beloved Warwick,” she wrote.

“He was a kind, beautiful, and gentle soul who was adored by everyone who knew him.”

Another said Tollemache “left an indelible mark on all who knew him”.

“He will live on in all of us,” they wrote.

Crew ‘frantic’ in their search for missing man

Ivan Rukavina, from Melbourne, who was on the cruise, told 7NEWS.com.au he heard “Oscar Oscar Oscar” over the ships’ loudspeaker — a code meaning man overboard.

Rukavina claims Tollemache fell from the 15th-floor balcony, about 20m above his room and directly above the main pool area.

He said it would not have been hard to jump over the ship’s glass railing.

Following the incident, crew members attempted to lower lifeboats into the water.

Rukavina said crew were “frantically” trying to get the lights on the lifeboats to work.

“I heard someone say ‘there’s no lights’,” he said.

All passengers were told to go back to their rooms so crew could conduct a head count.

Rukavina said he didn’t know whether Tollemache was travelling alone or with family.

“It’s sad for their family,” he said, adding, “It’s a bit disturbing, to be honest.”

Another passenger Ken told 7NEWS.com.au he and his wife were awake at the time of the incident, and saw the lifeboats and search lights being used.

He said he’d heard from multiple passengers that two members of the crew saw the man go overboard.

“A lady heard a scream, went out on to the balcony and saw him drop past, hit the tender below and fall into the water,” Ken said.

He added the crew had dealt with the situation in a “very professional and respectful way”.

“The captain ... hung around as long as (he) could before being told by the US Coast Guard to resume course.”

Earlier medical incident not linked

The cruise company has now confirmed a woman died from a medical episode just hours before Tollemache went overboard.

There were earlier unconfirmed reports the woman was the man’s partner. However, Royal Caribbean has quashed the claims, saying the incidents were not connected.

In a speech addressing passengers on Thursday morning, the captain said his “deepest sympathies and thoughts” were with the man’s family.

“We’ll do our best to provide assistance and support to the family (and) out of respect we will not provide any other details,” the captain said.

Tourist trying to catch Hawaii sunrise drives off 60-foot cliff, gets swept away – and survives nearly unscathed

A Canadian tourist visiting Hawaii walked away nearly unscathed after he drove off a 60-foot cliff on the Big Island and fell into the ocean early Sunday morning.

The unidentified man, 27, was driving along restricted backroads near the South Point cliff dive with a rented Jeep when the vehicle plunged off the cliff at around 3:30 a.m., according to local reports.

The rental got stuck upside down on the rocks below, and when the tourist crawled out he fell directly into the water below him and was quickly swept away, Island News reported.

Luckily for him, local spear-fishermen often camp out on the beach overnight to begin fishing at the crack of dawn and a few who were there that morning witnessed the Jeep’s — and then the man’s — fall.

They quickly called 911, and first responders were able to bring the man to safety by coaching him from the shore.

One of the fishermen who witnessed the rescue said he and his dive partner were woken up by another fisherman whom the Jeep driver nearly hit when he drove off the cliff.

“He said that the car had gone off the cliff just to the right of him,” Mike Moody told the local outlet.

The fisherman immediately called 911.

“If he didn’t see it, the guy would have died 100%,” Moody told KHON2 .

He said that the Jeep was flipped completely upside down and the driver’s side door was blocked.

“The driver’s side was jammed up with a rock so he couldn’t get out. Obviously, it was upside down on the roof so he was upside down and hanging right over the water on the passenger side,” Moody told Island News.

“He probably had no idea there’s water underneath him. He just opened the door and the kid said he had just fallen straight out into the water.”

The Canadian was able to swim to safety despite the steep fall and strong current with the help of first responders.

“He was floating on his back 80 feet from shore, we coached him in and he swam to a safe area,” Hawaii Island Fire Chief Kazuo Todd told KHON2.

From there, firefighters used a rope to pull him to shore.

He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor facial injuries, scratches and mild hypothermia.

Rental vehicles are not supposed to be driven on the stretch of cliffside dirt roads where the man drove off due to poor conditions and limited cell surface, according to the local station.

A fisherman said the roads are “super dangerous on [that] side of the island.”

“And if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can get yourself in pretty big trouble,” the fisherman named Jason told Island News.

  • A 27-year-old Canadian tourist drove a car over a cliff in the South Point area of Hawaii's Big Island on Sunday, per local reports
  • Witnesses said the victim fell out of the Jeep, which landed upside down, and plummeted into the ocean below
  • One local fisherman described the area as "super dangerous" for drivers

A Canadian tourist is recovering from injuries he sustained after driving a rental car off a 60-foot cliff early Sunday morning.

Authorities said the 27-year-old man was in the South Point area of the Big Island around 3:30 a.m. local time when the rental car he was driving went over the cliff, according to ABC News and ABC affiliate KITV .

The Jeep is believed to have taken a wrong turn down a hill just before going over the edge and landing upside down, per the outlets.

A nearby fisherman watched the Jeep go over the cliff, reported KITV and FOX affiliate KHON-TV .

The man then woke up Mike Moody and his dive partner to tell them what he witnessed. “If he didn’t see it, the guy would have died 100%,” Moody told the outlet.

The tourist “fell immediately in the water” upon opening the Jeep’s passenger side door, according to the fisherman. The Canadian man was unable to exit the driver’s side door, which was pinned shut.

Officials offered a similar description of the incident, according to ABC News. They said the man was subsequently swept out to sea, and was found about 100 yards from shore when crews arrived.

It took crews nearly 30 minutes to reach the remote area where the crash occurred, KHON-TV reported. Hawaii Island Fire Chief Kazuo Todd said crews “coached” the man as he “swam to a safe area.” Ropes were used to help retrieve the man as well.

The Hawaii Fire Department did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

The Canadian man experienced mild hypothermia and was transported to a local hospital, per the reports.

He also sustained “facial injuries” and “scratches” as a result of the crash, according to KHON-TV.

The Jeep was reportedly removed from the rocky area on Monday.

One fisherman told KITV that the road on the cliffside can be "super dangerous," adding, "if you don't know what you're doing, you can get yourself in pretty big trouble."
