Great article and pictures. I was born and raised in Greenville SC and love to go as often as I can. You listed lots of great places especially the restaurants. Fall For Greenville is going on right now.♥️ Check it out, it’s an annual event.

I’m way excited to get out and explore all these things to do in Greenville. We just moved here and have spent so much time fixing up our house. We actually have a local cabinet refinishing crew coming out this week so while they’re working, we’re going to get out and play. As huge baseball fans, we are definitely going to hit up the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum.

Great article! Greenville has so much to offer. I highly recommend the Sigal Music Museum, located at Heritage Green in downtown Greenville. They have rotating exhibits and all kinds of events, including concerts.

1. Walk Across the Liberty bridge

While crossing the Liberty Bridge you’ll be rewarded with scenic views of the waterfall and the Reedy River far below. The bridge curves away from the falls which creates an aerial amphitheater. A saunter across this famous Greenville landmark is a must during your visit!

Fun Things to do in Greenville: Falls Park

As you cross Liberty Bridge and look down, you’ll see a beautifully landscaped park with paved walking trails far below. Wander over the bridge and down to the trails and you’ll find some decorative statues, vibrantly colored flowers, and even wooden swings if you’d like to rest during your walk.

There’s plenty of shade along the way so it’s the perfect spot for an afternoon walk. Plus it’s easy to make a loop to get you back where you started. Be sure to stop at the iconic Medusa Tree along the way!

3. Imbibe at a Brewery

Fun Things to do in Greenville: Imbibe at a Brewery

If you’re a beer fanatic you’ll love all of the unique craft breweries in Greenville! Our personal favorite is Yee-Haw Brewing Company , especially if you are planning on bringing your kids. They have a huge outdoor space with basketball hoops, foosball, giant connect-4, and a large projector screen for showing various sporting events. Their food isn’t exactly healthy – burgers and fried chicken – but the fun ambiance and delicious beer will have you coming back again and again during your visit!

Fireforge Crafted Beer is another Greenville brewery with a great outdoor space, perfect for a sunny afternoon brew. Their website describes them as “a small-batch brewery, tasting room and pleasure garden focused on ever-changing beers inspired by the people, places and culinary palates we love” which we found to be 100% accurate. Plus they have funky vintage furniture inside and the outdoor area is pet-friendly!

Cool Things to do in Greenville: Imbibe at a Brewery

Tetrad Brewing Company has a large industrial tasting room area as well as an outdoor area – both with a lively vibe. They have a few of their own concoctions as well as some guest brews on tap. Kids and dogs are welcome and the super friendly staff will make anyone and everyone feel right at home here.

4. Eat at a Food Truck at Gather Greenville

Must do things in Greenville: Gather Greenville

Gather Greenville is arguably the best place in town to get a bite to eat on a nice day. This food truck pod has tons of different cuisine options and, of course, plenty of local beer on tap. Wine lovers (like me!) will flock to the yummy wine slushies and sangria.

The food trucks surround a turf area with various seating options. If you bring your kids they can play a game of corn hole or just run around on the turf and play with puppies. You’ll have delicious options from pizza to pasta to tacos, and everything in between. You really can’t go wrong no matter what truck you choose to patron!

Greenville Things to do: Mice on Main Street

Adults and kids alike will have a great time wandering down Main Street in search of the famous bronze mice that are hidden along the sidewalk. This fun exhibition was inspired by the children’s book Goodnight Moon and the nine tiny mice statues were created by a local sculptor and illustrator.

The mice are scattered on both sides of Main Street from the Hyatt Regency to the Westin Poinsett. There are clues on this page that will help with the scavenger hunt. They are pretty well hidden so the search may be more difficult than you think!

When to visit Greenville, South Carolina

One of the most important things to consider when planning a trip to Greenville is deciding on the best time of year to visit.

Greenville weather

For the weather, visiting in late spring might be a great time or into fall is also good.

If you struggle with allergies, early spring is probably not a good time to visit. And late summer can bring heavy storms that spin off from hurricane weather on the South Carolina coast. The middle of summer is just too hot and humid in my opinion.

The coldest and most disagreeable winter weather in Greenville typically comes in January and February. This is when the potential for snow and/or ice is highest.

Greenville festivals

Greenville, South Carolina is alive with an assortment of vibrant festivals and special events.

Choose to visit Greenville in May or October if you want to participate in one of the city’s signature events Artisphere or Fall for Greenville.

Other great seasonal events and activities include:

  • U.Day (October), Christmas Carol Sing and Lighting Ceremony (Friday after Thanksgiving), and Living Gallery (Easter Weekend) at Bob Jones University
  • Music by the Lake free summer live music concert series at Furman University
  • Indie Craft Parade (September)
  • Plus lots and lots more!

The city of Greenville has spent many years developing its downtown into an area that its residents and guests can enjoy exploring and generally just hanging out in.

We truly have one of the best downtowns in America for our tree-lined Main Street full of shops and great dining options.

Stop by a locally owned coffee shop or restaurant, or shop in one of the unique boutiques.

Downtown Greenville is becoming quite the foodie destination, thanks to local restaurateurs. You’ll come across some chain restaurants in the area too, but you’ll discover that Greenville loves its homegrown restaurants.

Start your morning off bright and early at the market located on Main Street from 8 a.m. to noon, situated at the corner of McBee Ave and Main St. Shop away along Main Street between Court St and Washington St to find all kinds of goodies!

Explore the offerings of more than 75 vendors selling local produce, flowers, food, and other hand-crafted goods. The Greenville Market demands that all food be grown within 100 miles and also strongly encourages artisans to acquire locally-sourced materials.

Mice on Main

This is a fun one for those traveling with kids. Hunt through Main Street in downtown Greenville on the lookout for nine bronze mice.

Check out the clues on the official Greenville tourism website to help in your scavenger hunt.

Falls Park on the Reedy

bridge spanning small river with trees on the bank

While taking in the sights of downtown Greenville, why not stop by Spill the Beans for a tasty coffee beverage or ice cream? Then explore one of the most beloved attractions in town, Falls Park on the Reedy.

The picturesque Reedy River falls, in the heart of downtown Greenville, is proudly celebrated in the name of this park.

Boasting an award-winning design, the 354-foot Liberty Bridge is a unique architectural marvel that has made it one of the most popular spots in the city center.

Take a leisurely stroll to one of the nearby acclaimed restaurants, or better yet bring your picnic and savor it in one of the picturesque spots alongside Reedy River. I mean, if the weather is good. And it very often is.

The park is free for guests to explore and is open every day.

Greenville Zoo

For all the animal lovers out there, a visit to Greenville Zoo is an absolute must while you’re in town. It’s one of my favorite small zoos ever.

I am deeply inspired by their staunch commitment to conservation, which includes offering a grant that funds programs for the protection of wildlife in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Enjoy complimentary parking at two close-by lots, as well as the added convenience of proximity to Cleveland Park and the Swamp Rabbit Trail.

Swamp Rabbit Trail

Stretching 22 miles from Greenville to Travelers Rest, South Carolina, the historic Swamp Rabbit Trail is perfect for cycling and hiking. On the weekends, taking a jog or bike ride along The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a popular pastime in Greenville.

If you need a mid-hike or mid-ride pick-me-up, there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments, from snacks and coffee to ice cream treats.

A lot of the Swamp Rabbit Trail follows the Reedy River, the same river that flows through the center of Greenville and Falls Park.

Okay, let’s address the elephant in the room. The name of Swamp Rabbit Trail. We also have an East Coast Hockey League team called the Greenville Swamp Rabbits.

I swear I am not making that up. Evidently, the swamp rabbit is native to this region.

Why we think that means we have to name a bunch of stuff after this creature, I really couldn’t tell you. Nevertheless, here we are.

Greenville County Museum of Art

When I travel, one of my favorite activities is visiting art museums. From the Met in New York City to the Louvre in Paris, I am always captivated by these beautiful spaces and the artwork they display.

The Greenville County Museum of Art has one of the best collections of American art I’ve had the joy of seeing in a regional museum. This includes the largest public collection of Andrew Wyeth watercolors (swoon!).

Conveniently situated at Heritage Green in downtown Greenville. Heritage Green is a cultural campus that includes,

  • the GCMA (of course)
  • the main branch (Hughes) of the Greenville County Library System
  • the Greenville Theatre
  • Children’s Museum of the Upstate,
  • Sigal Music Museum, and the
  • Upcountry History Museum.

Admission to the Greenville County Museum of Art is free. There is a small charge to park in the Heritage Green parking lot during normal business hours on weekdays.

Take in a show at the Peace Center

exterior of a large brick and glass building

Another one of the crown jewels of downtown Greenville is the Peace Center , a renowned performing arts facility.

The Peace Center is an esteemed hub for Greenville’s orchestra and chorale, but it also regularly hosts renowned artists from various genres and Broadway productions.

The roster of illustrious artists that have graced their stage includes The Beach Boys, Chicago, renowned soprano Renee Fleming, and multiple Tony-award-winning Audra McDonald along with virtuoso Joshua Bell.

From Hamilton to The Lion King and Wicked, the Peace Center’s theatre calendar is packed with phenomenal Broadway shows that draw people from all over the area. And Steve Martin and Martin Short recorded their Emmy-nominated Netflix special An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life at the Peace Center.

Not only is the Peace Center a premier venue, but they are also determined to reduce its environmental footprint. In fact, many believe that this is the first zero-waste-to-landfill arts facility.

Attend a Greenville Drive Game

Baseball players warming up on a field with a green fence.

Even if performing arts don’t appeal to everyone, surely baseball is something everyone can get behind.

If you’re visiting Greenville, South Carolina, during baseball season, I encourage you to check out the Greenville Drive playing at Fluor Field, even if you don’t usually like going to sporting events.

The Greenville Drive is a High-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and they have one of the best minor league ballparks in the U.S. Seriously, I love it.

They even have their own Green Monster like at Fenway in Boston.

Other things to do in Greenville if you have more time

If you’re going to be in Greenville for longer than just a day, perhaps a weekend getaway, here are a couple of more things you might want to add to your itinerary.

There are a lot of great day trips from Greenville .

Paris Mountain State Park

For the more active visitors to Greenville, Paris Mountain State Park is an excellent option.

Paris Mountain is one of 16 South Carolina State Parks built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, and it’s on the National Register of Historic Places.

There are more than 15 miles of hiking and biking trails rated from easy to strenuous in the park. It has also become a top camping destination in the Greenville area.

Many trees around a small lake. In the distance you can see a rack of canoes on the shore.

Another favorite Upstate South Carolina park is the very popular Table Rock State Park.

The top things to do at Table Rock State Park include,

  • Climbing Table Rock (of course!)
  • Hike Lakeside Trail
  • Enjoy live bluegrass music at “Music on the Mountain”

With a walkable downtown area and even waterfalls downtown, Greenville is picturesque as well as a great city to explore. It is easy to see why Forbes named it one of America’s Best Downtowns. Within a few blocks, visitors will find hotels, restaurants, shops, and parks. Park your vehicle at your hotel and forget about it for the remainder of your weekend.

If you’re visiting during a weekend, or for just a few days, here are 10 things not to miss during your Greenville, South Carolina, visit:

1. Take a walking tour of downtown

One of the best ways to explore a city is with a walking tour and Greenville offers plenty of them. Whether you like historical, culinary, Segway, or ghost tours, Greenville has them all. Want to do it at your own pace? Download one to your phone or tablet from GPSMyCity . The advantage of having a guide with you is that you can ask questions and find out about places to go to from a local. If mobility is not an issue, I highly encourage you to take a walking tour — Greenville’s hot spots are easily reachable with your own two feet.

2. Foodies rejoice!

Touted as a foodie city by the likes of Southern Living and USA Today , foodies will certainly enjoy their time in Greenville. So don’t forget to pack your stretchy pants! Don’t want to try to figure it out on your own? The city’s visitors’ bureau offers breakfast tours, a chef’s table tour, cocktail tours, and even a dessert tour. One of the most well-known restaurants is Soby’s New South Cuisine , which led downtown’s revitalization. Just make sure you make reservations ahead of time!

The Food Network has come to town several times, so visitors should certainly check out where they’ve been but don’t miss out on other chefs too!

PRO TIP: Stop by Maple Street Biscuit Company (18 East North Street). With communal seating that encourages getting to know your neighbor or locals, eating here is a fun experience. Try the Squawking Goat featured on the Food Network.

Mast General Store - Greenville SC Main Street

3. Stroll and shop along Main Street

After eating all that food, you’ll want to walk it off. Covering approximately ten blocks, Main Street in Greenville is pedestrian-friendly. The sidewalks are wide and accommodating. There is plenty of parking on the street, with additional parking decks nearby.

Housing about 120 shops and restaurants, it is a fun area to just walk around and window shop.

Don’t miss Mast General Store . You’ll find a little bit of everything — from your favorite Clemson gear to Columbia apparel to Yeti products. Shoppers will also find everything they need for their next outdoor adventure — from camping to fishing gear. Travelers will find a nice assortment of Badger and Burt Bees products too.

We bought some chocolate at Kilwins Chocolate, Fudge and Ice Cream Shop at NoMa Square . You can never go wrong with bringing back chocolate souvenirs from your trip!

PRO TIP: A free trolley service transports visitors along the most popular areas for those who wish to cover greater distances or who are just a bit tired. You can check their schedules .

Things to do in Greenville SC - Mice on Main bronze statues

4. Find the Mice on Main Street

No, not the bad kind of mice but nine unique bronze statues interspersed between the Hyatt Regency and the Westin Poinsett. If, like me, you read Goodnight Moon a million times, then you’ll be glad to know that this childhood book inspired this high school senior project. The statues are now a Greenville institution and the clues to each mouse’s location can be found here .

It is a fun family activity and certainly makes you more observant of your surroundings. Sadly, I couldn’t find all of them myself but I was short on time. Some of these mice are either really small or very good at hiding!

Liberty Bridge - things to do in Greenville SC

5. Admire the views from the Liberty Bridge

206 S. Main Street – Website

Completed in 2004, the Liberty Bridge passes over the Reedy River, providing pedestrians with unique views of waterfalls inside the city. Yes, you read that right — the city of Greenville has waterfalls inside the city.

The sweeping curve of the design makes it an ideal photo spot – the perfect Instagram spot! It is a great place to meet friends and start your walk around town. This pedestrian-only suspension bridge spans 345 feet over the Reedy River.

Access (and parking) is available in the hip West End neighborhood.

Surrounding the area around the Liberty Bridge is Falls Park on the Reedy. The park features walking trails, sitting areas, and even performance areas. The entrance to the park in the West End neighborhood is surrounded by restaurants, coffee shops, and a mix of residential and commercial buildings.

7. Ride a bicycle along the Swamp Rabbit Trail

If you’re already at Falls Park, you can access this approximately 20-mile long trail from here. Multiple access points can be found throughout the city otherwise. Rent one of the ride-share bikes available and explore the trail. You can find your way to restaurants and breweries from here. Enjoy lots of relaxing spots along the trail and enjoy nature. It leads downtown visitors to the zoo if that is a place of interest.

The oldest private university in South Carolina, founded in 1826, Furman University opened in its current Greenville location in 1958. Located next to Falls Park, the campus is picturesque and worth visiting. Frequently hailed as one of the most beautiful universities in the United States, visitors shouldn’t miss seeing the bell tower next to the lake. The Asia-inspired gardens and elegant Georgian-inspired buildings are worth a walk-through for admirers of architecture.

flight of beers at Yee Haw brewery in Greenville SC

9. Enjoy a cold frosty beverage at one of the city’s 15+ breweries

Frequent readers know that I am a firm believer that local craft breweries are one of my favorite things to do in cities — and Greenville is no exception. Several breweries are located within blocks from Main Street and not far from the several spots on this list. You’re sure to find the perfectly brewed beer to cool you down from all your hard work in exploring the city. Two breweries, Yee Haw Brewery and Fireforge Crafted Beer are just the perfect stops if you want to stay within walking distance of Main Street.

PRO TIP: Enjoy the views from UP on the Roof . If you’re looking for a great place for lunch, dinner, or even drinks with fabulous views of downtown Greenville, you won’t regret a visit to UP on the Roof. This is rooftop dining at its best, featuring locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

10. Attend a show

My last-minute trip to Greenville, South Carolina was inspired by an invite to watch the Trans Siberian Orchestra at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Located in downtown Greenville, traffic patterns and parking can be difficult, so give yourself extra time to arrive on time.  Greenville, South Carolina is fortunate to enjoy several large venues, but the two listed below are the ones that attract the most visitors:

Peace Center 300 South Main Street – Website

Near Falls Park and on the Reedy River is this unique facility hosting various art performances. At the corner of Main and Broad. A large six-acre campus.

Bon Secours Wellness Arena 650 North Academy Street – Website

PRO TIP: If you’re spending the night, consider staying at a hotel within walking distance. We stayed at the Home2Suites by Hilton . While the facility charges $15 per night and is valet parking only, that was cheaper than the $20 fees we saw for other nearby lots. Plus, you can refresh yourself after a drive and explore downtown without worrying about drinking and driving.

And a wintertime bonus thing to do in Greenville, SC:

Outside of Downtown Greenville

The area surrounding Greenville is full of state parks where you have your choice of outdoor activities as well as unique museums that can help you learn more about a variety of topics.  Most of the attractions below are located within a 30-minute drive with the exception of the Caesars Head State Park which is just under an hour away. However, we promise that the sweeping views over the Blue Ridge Mountains make it well worth the trip!

Chimney Rock State Park

Standing 315 feet tall, Chimney Rock is a 535 million-year-old monolith. There are 499 steps leading up to the top of Chimney Rock and from the top you can see up to 75 miles away with sweeping views over the soaring mountains and meandering waterways of Hickory Nut Gorge and Lake Lure far below.

Besides the hike up to Chimney Rock, there are many other hiking trails and waterfalls to explore such as the 404 foot tall Hickory Nut Falls or the Skyline Trail which takes you past ridge-top forests and steep cliffs as you meander your way to the highest point of the park, Peregrine’s Point. Alternatively, the Great Woodland Trail is a bit more family-friendly and leads you along an educational trail where you can learn more about the animals who call the forest home.

Swamp Rabbit Trail

The Swamp Rabbit Trail also runs along the Reedy River. This 22-mile multi-use trail system connects Greenville to Travelers Rest and runs along an old railway line.  The trail is completely flat making it ideal for walking, biking, or in-line skating and it is a great way to travel between the two cities.

Greenville Zoo

Set across 14 acres of land, the Greenville Zoo may be small but it is mighty.  The zoo is home to over 90 different species of animals including orangutans, red pandas, alligators, leopards, and lions as well as Providence, a baby giraffe who is the sweetheart of Greenville and loves hanging out with the zoo’s other giraffes. A trip to the zoo normally only takes around one to two hours making it an easy activity to slot into a busy travel schedule.  The zoo is located adjacent to Cleveland Park about a 25-minute walk from Downtown Greenville.

Cleveland Park

Cleveland Park covers an impressive 122 acres of land near Downtown Greenville and provides ample opportunities for exercising with walking paths including a section of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, exercise equipment, and sports fields.  While you are there, you can also check out the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial, the Rock Quarry Garden,  and, of course, the Greenville Zoo mentioned above.

Caesars Head State Park

Located just under an hour north of Greenville, Caesars Head State Park gets its unique name from a granitic gneiss outcrop that is supposed to look like….you guessed it, Caesar’s Head.  While this may take a bit of imagination, it is not hard to see why this park is a popular spot for fishing, bird watching, and hiking.  The park boasts a wide array of hiking trails ranging from easy half-mile walks to 10-mile behemoths.  It is a beautiful place to spend the day taking in the breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Paris Mountain State Park

Created during the Great Depression as part of a Civil Works project, the Paris Mountain State Park not only has an interesting history that can still be seen today but is also overflowing with gorgeous scenery.  The park offers 17 miles of hiking trails , 44 campsites, and six picnic shelters spread across 1700 acres of land that is just waiting to be explored. The park is located just over 15 minutes north of Greenville city center.

If you have time, make sure to check out the Furman University campus which is located close to the park.  This small liberal arts college features a 40-acre lake with its own bell tower within the 750-acre wooded campus and looks a little bit like it is straight out of a movie.

Roper Mountain Science Center

Located a 10 minute drive east of Greenville, the Roper Mountain Science Center is set on a 62-acre campus and features state-of-the-art  hands-on displays and exhibits on the latest in all things STEM-related.  On Friday nights, the Planetarium lights up for Starry Nights and during the summer, there are special camps where kids can learn about everything from coding to farm animals.  This is an excellent place to spend a few hours with curious kiddos of all ages (even the grown-up ones!) and is a great place for the whole family.  Besides the museum, the center has a number of facilities such as the living farm and the butterfly garden that are only open to the public during special events so make sure to check their website to get the latest information on what is happening at the science center.

BMW Zentrum

If you are a fan of German cars, then the BMW Zentrum should be at the top of your Greenville wishlist.  The center is the only BMW museum in North America and a trip there can almost make you feel like you are in Munich.  During your visit, you can see BMW cars from the past decades including the cars that broke records and set milestones and learn more about what we may see in the future.  The museum takes you through the company’s formation as a supplier for the aviation industry to its rise to fame as one of the world’s best car manufacturers.  The museum is completely free to visit and it is also possible to join an hour-long walking tour of the factory itself.

Discovery Island Waterpark

If you want a chance to cool off from the South Carolina summer heat, head over to the Discovery Island Waterpark .  Located in Simpsonville, the waterpark is just a short 20 minute drive southeast of Greenville making it a great way to start or end the day.  During a visit, you can whoosh down the waterslide, try out your surfing skills at the FlowRider Perpetual Wave, or lounge on the 270-foot long lazy river.  There is also a no-depth splash and play area for kids.

Day Trips from Greenville

Outside of Greenville, you can find a number of charming towns and vibrant cities that are well-worth spending a few hours exploring.

Spartanburg

Once nicknamed the “Hub City”, Spartanburg was once the meeting point of many different railway lines.  The city boasts a cultural district with art galleries, and bookshops and a music trail that highlights the town’s very loose collections with some music legends as well as the tranquil (and free!) Hatcher Botanical Garden.

Columbia is the capital of South Carolina and is full of interesting historical and cultural attractions including a ton of free museums, the South Carolina State Capitol, and the Governor’s Mansion. You can also see some beautifully preserved 19th-century homes and learn more about the city’s role during the Civil War. Columbia lies only 90 minutes away from Greenville and

Travelers Rest

Located at the far end of the Swamp Rabbit Trail, Travelers Rest is a charming little town that has been ranked  by USA Today as one of the Best Southern Small Towns.  Like Greenville, you can find a plethora of locally-owned businesses here including shops, restaurants, bars, and taprooms and this is a great spot to spend a few hours relaxing after finishing the Swamp Rabbit Trail.   If you don’t feel like going the 22-miles back to Greenville, don’t worry – there is a bus that links the two cities.

Located about 100 miles southwest of Charleston, Hilton Head Island caters to travelers seeking a slow-paced vacation. Much less developed than other beach options like Myrtle Beach and North Carolina's Outer Banks, Hilton Head Island boasts 12-plus miles of pristine shoreline. Coligny Beach Park offers a wealth of facilities, such as adjacent shops and restaurants, but those looking for less-crowded sands should seek out the beach access point at Alder Lane. What's more, Hilton Head has earned the nickname "Golf Island" for its dozens of championship courses.

With 10 miles of undisturbed beaches, renowned golf courses and top-notch resorts , Kiawah Island has all the essentials for a serene (albeit costly) beach vacation. Kiawah Island (located about 30 miles southwest of Charleston) features smooth beaches that are great for biking, lounging and spotting bottlenose dolphins and sea turtles. Meanwhile, novice golfers can attend clinics at a learning center, while pros can take on the challenging Ocean Course (notorious for its wind). Come mealtime, visitors can find everything from ice cream parlors to upscale dining at the island's resorts or the picture-perfect Freshfields Village.

Beaufort's quaint oak tree-lined streets and Civil War-era homes provide a glimpse into the small town's antebellum days. Sign up for a walking or horse-drawn carriage tour to take in your surroundings, then visit the Beaufort History Museum to learn more about the town's past. You'll also want to check out Penn Center on the nearby St. Helena Island to educate yourself about Gullah culture. Once you've gotten your fill of history, head to the Beaufort River to kayak or paddleboard, or make your way to the Port Royal Cypress Wetlands and Rookery for a couple of hours of bird-watching.

Although Greenville doesn’t receive throngs of visitors like other South Carolina destinations, it's one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, meaning it may not remain a hidden gem for much longer. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville has earned a reputation as a hub for outdoor activities. Head to Falls Park on the Reedy to walk across its impressive Liberty Bridge or bike the 28-mile Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. In town, catch a show at the Peace Center, stroll down Main Street or mingle with friendly locals at a brewery.

This small town between Charleston and Myrtle Beach packs in a lot of history. Get the lay of the land with a tram tour in the historic district, where you'll find attractions that tell disparate stories of life before the Civil War, from Georgian mansions like the Kaminski House Museum to The Rice Museum, which details Georgetown's impactful rice plantation economy. A boat tour can also take you past plantations like Hopsewee Plantation and Hobcaw Barony, which call attention to Native American and Gullah culture and the slave experience. Back in town, the Harborwalk is worth a stroll for its restaurants, shops and art galleries.

Myrtle Beach, one of the most iconic East Coast beach destinations , is especially popular with families thanks to its wealth of kid-friendly attractions (think: miniature golf courses and Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach). But visitors of all ages will enjoy spending time by the water. Myrtle Beach's 60-mile stretch of coastline is ideal for relaxing, and the gentle water makes it an excellent place to swim, fish, paddleboard and kayak. To get a dose of nature without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists, travelers can head to Myrtle Beach State Park, which offers equestrian trails, playgrounds, a campground and a fishing pier.

best places to visit in greenville south carolina

Situated less than 17 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach State Park offers an escape from the busyness of South Carolina's better-known beaches. You can swim, fish and go boating at its 3-mile-long undeveloped beach. Additionally, more than 300 bird species call this park home; walk along Huntington Beach's two nature trails to access some of its best places for bird-watching (you may also spot some alligators). Don't forget to save time for a guided tour of Moorish-style Atalaya Castle and a visit to Brookgreen Gardens to marvel at its flowers and sculptures.

best places to visit in greenville south carolina

Central South Carolina's Congaree National Park is home to North America's largest stretch of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest, making it an excellent place to go hiking. Congaree boasts more than 27 miles of trails and boardwalks suitable for all skill levels, including the shorter Boardwalk Loop Trail and longer paths like the Weston Lake Trail and the Oakridge Trail that are havens for birds, wild turkeys and deer. When you're not exploring its beautiful forest, spend a few hours fishing in Congaree National Park's lakes or canoeing or kayaking down Cedar Creek.

best places to visit in greenville south carolina

Caesars Head State Park stuns visitors with an easily accessible overlook that grants sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Escarpment's 2,000-foot drop. This outcropping is just the starting point for exploring the park, which sits roughly 30 miles northwest of Greenville on the North Carolina-South Carolina border. Sixty-plus miles of trails lead to sights like the Devil's Kitchen, where hikers can clamber between narrow walls of a mountain that's been split in two, and Raven Cliff Falls, which rewards those who complete the 2-mile trail with a 420-foot cascade. Fishing and bird-watching (particularly during the fall hawk migration) are also popular things to do.

13 Gorgeous Images of What Puts the "Green" in Greenville

After you check out these photos, you’ll never again wonder which Greenville everyone’s talking about. The following are 13 gorgeous images, sure, but they’re also 13 reasons why this South Carolina hotspot is one of the fastest growing towns in the nation. It’s the region’s hub to the outdoors in any and all directions, your jumping-off point to gorges, mountain peaks, clear waters, bike trails, sunsets, waterfalls, and just about everything else Mother Nature has ever conjured up.

So get ready, because your trip list is about to get one longer. Welcome to the “green”—of that Greenville, South Carolina.

1. Greenville's Downtown Skyline

Sandwiched between a waterfall and the mountains and just a few hours from the ocean, Greenville's name isn't exactly a coincidence. This is a drone-only view—unless you opt for a  helicopter tour  over the best of South Carolina's Upstate.

2. Caesars Head State Park

State parks lie within easy driving distance from town, whatever direction you're headed. This overlook is steps from the main parking lot at Caesars Head State Park , making the initial payoff virtually effortless. But dive deeper into the network of trails and you'll find the best of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area : choose between suspension bridges, waterfalls, and epic granite views.

3. The Gorge Zipline

The Gorge Zipline , less than an hour north of Greenville, is the longest, highest, and steepest canopy zipline in all of the United States. You'll fly over more than a mile of the Green River Gorge, one of the last old-growth forests of its kind. The views are incredible—line 5 alone is 1,100 feet long—and you'll see for yourself why ziplining is so fun.

4. Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail

Running straight through downtown Greenville all the way up to Travelers Rest and beyond, the Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail System  is 28 miles that absolutely fly by. Broken up by landmarks—including tasty cafés, cute small-town downtowns, and old train cars—the mostly flat, mostly shaded trail is great for bikers, runners, families, pups, and anyone who needs some "green" time.

5. Furman University

The oldest private institution in the state is also one of the most beautiful. The Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail intersects with the campus of Furman University , giving you access to views like the one above. Locals refer to this as Swan Lake, and you just might see some of the birds on your visit. Hope you packed a picnic!

6. Campbell's Covered Bridge

Campbell's Covered Bridge , just north of Travelers Rest, is the last covered bridge in the state, built in 1909. Views like this used to dot South Carolina—the entire country, really—while now they're a reminder of a simpler, slower time and something to be sought out.

7. Greenville Zoo

Part of the city's giant Cleveland Park , the Greenville Zoo is 14 acres worthy of a city ten times the size. Come to watch the giraffes eat 75 lbs of food a day, come for Brew in the Zoo, or come to support the zoo's conservation efforts—some of the most impressive in the state.

8. Falls Park on the Reedy

Rivers run through a lot of towns, but how many can claim a massive waterfall to boot? It's now part of Falls Park on the Reedy , a spot just grand enough to mirror Greenville's dedication to the outdoors.

9. Eugenia Duke Bridge

Even if you've only eaten a sandwich in the South, you've probably heard of Duke's Mayonnaise. Eugenia Duke invented the stuff millions swear by, and in her honor, the Eugenia Duke Bridge crosses the Reedy River in downtown Greenville. Around Artisphere time in early May, this green-painted pedestrian bridge gets draped in color, as you see above.

10. The Liberty Bridge over Falls Park on the Reedy

You're looking at what's possible when an artistic, outdoorsy community comes together. The Liberty Bridge replaced a six-lane highway in 2004, and now this topographical jackpot is, once again, the heartbeat of the city. Trails meander every which way in the surrounding park spaces, and downtown is just a staircase away from this massive waterfall.

11. Lower Wildcat Falls

A fun half-day trip out of Greenville is to follow the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC-11), which passes pristine spots like this. Lower Wildcat Falls can be seen right from the road. If you have the time (and the appropriate footwear), a short hike along the trail to the left of the lower falls will bring you first to Middle Wildcat Falls and, a quarter-mile later, to Upper Wildcat Falls , a 100-foot free-fall.

12. Table Rock State Park

Table Rock State Park , 40 minutes or so northwest of downtown, has the highest peak entirely within South Carolina: Pinnacle Mountain, reaching some 3,400 feet into the sky. You can hit the summit and make it back in time for happy hour.

13. Lake Jocassee from Jumping Off Rock

The massive 7,565-acre Lake Jocassee should be seen first from above—that way, you'll understand the maze of water you're dealing with. Accessible via Devils Fork State Park , an hour west of Greenville, Jocassee is fed by streams and waterfalls, making it significantly cooler and clearer than its other Appalachian counterparts. Scuba divers, have at it.

The town known for miles of Main Street is experiencing expansion beyond its picturesque downtown. Greenville is chock full of diners who meet out all week long for drinks and apps, coffee, lunch, and dinner. It’s a place steeped in sweet tea, barbecue, and seasonal produce — and four seasons of mild weather equates to patio dining nearly year-round.

Restaurants have found homes in reimagined textile mills, repurposed commercial buildings, and second-generation restaurants in Greenville’s neighborhoods. They’ve ushered in a new era of easy parking, reservations, and an independent dining spirit with quality service. Several newcomers have found their way onto this Essentials List. In not much time, they’ve become mainstays with devoted followings.

Maverick Biscuit

Cathead biscuits are the specialty at Maverick, located in Taylors in a second-generation fast-food building. The counter service concept offers square biscuits with a big loft from the addition of cake flour. They’re topped in combinations like shrimp and grits, fried chicken with candied jalapeno, as well as the expected breakfast fare. Eggs are cooked to order, and mimosa bottle service is a fun add-on. Biscuit dough is also dropped into hot oil to produce a donut-like treat offered with lemon curd.

Asada’s owners Gina Petti and Roberto Cortez focus on global ingredients at their Latin fusion cafe with offerings such as okonomiyaki, Peruvian tacos, burger arepas, and shrimp stuffed chayote, but the steak tacos with house chips are a consistent best seller. A line at Saturday brunch moves quickly, and outdoor tables supply overflow seating. Two types of sangria, hibiscus tea, craft beer, and sake round out the experience. Cortez is a notable artist; his paintings hang in the dining room.

“Bordertown food” is what chef Dayna Lee-Márquez calls the menu at Comal 864, a version of Tex-Mex she grew up on. She was a James Beard semi-finalist nominee last year for Best Chef Southeast. She produces sauces by hand, and items like birrieria ramen and torta ahogada appear as specials, but the reason to head to the former textile general store in the Water Tower District is for the stuffed burritos. An avid activist, Lee-Márquez often hosts events for local organizations and issues she supports.

Fork and Plough

When chef Shawn Kelly partnered with Roddy Pick of Kingbird Pastures to create Fork & Plough, it established the anchor business Historic Overbrook needed — the restaurant/market/butcher shop hums along with neighborhood vibes. Farm-fresh comfort food is its sweet spot including fried chicken, meatloaf, and daily soups. The award-winning house burger made with Kingbird Pastures beef, shitake mushrooms, Swiss, and arugula is one of the best in Greenville. Weekend brunch is a standard with its mimosas topped with orange juice ice cubes.

Chef Max Godo is known for striking sushi, sashimi, roast pork ramen, and a sake menu that is large and varied. The wine list gets assistance from Mission Grape Co, a local distributor representing farm-made wines. New Zealand king salmon, toro, and hamachi stand out on the features menu. The brothy little neck clams appetizer is a nice starter and a roll named Tuna, Tuna, Tuna is a local favorite. At lunch, there are well-priced bento boxes.

Methodical Coffee

The self-proclaimed coffee nerds at Methodical Coffee now have three cafes and a roasting facility, but the downtown location at the One Plaza is a place to sip and savor, offering two stories of seating including patio tables out front. Coffee arrives in blue and white cups and saucers, and there are cloth napkins and vintage spoons. Every cup is expertly constructed from espresso to pour-overs, chai to matcha, chocolate milk to steamers to cold brew. Coffee offerings are varied, interesting, and purposefully complex.

Willy Taco Feed & Seed

The marquee location of Willy Taco in Midtown now has its own stop on the Swamp Rabbit Trail extension. The 1930s Feed and Seed store was reimagined into a 200-person restaurant by restaurant designer Sandra Cannon. A fresh juice cocktail program and extensive tequila list put Willy Taco above other cantinas. The blackened salmon taco is notably good, and the Mexican smash burger offers a double patty loaded with gooey toppings. Sunday Brunch, starting at 10 a.m, includes an overstuffed chimichanga, breakfast tacos, and specialty drinks.

12 Spots to Visit in Greenville This Year

Chef Joe Cash’s resume includes time in New York City at Per Se and Major Food Group, but he returned to Greenville to open his own fine dining restaurant Scoundrel in the heart of downtown. A cadre of classically built dishes fills the daily menu, including Caesar salad with shaved celery root, seasonal whole fish, glazed mussel toast, and his grandmother’s cocoa powder layer cake, which he says will never leave the menu. But the sauced duck, with its spear of lacinato kale, is not to be missed.

Society Sandwich Bar & Social Club

Open every day until 2 a.m., Society filled a gap in Greenville: late-night dining. Owner Jeremy Krauze and chef Chris Rosensteel set out to bring something irreverent to downtown and serve lunch items to wee hours. The restaurant offers two stories of dining, each with a dedicated bar. The menu focuses on specialty sandwiches and ramen, while offering offers twisted plates like huevos ranchero fries, Philly cheese egg rolls, and hot chicken ramen with tiki-leaning cocktails. The extensive bourbon and tequila selection here means even craft drinkers take Society seriously.

Swordfish Cocktail Club

The handsome cocktail bar a few blocks off Main Street is reservation-worthy for a table, but a seat at the bar allows a geek-worthy show of methods and ingredients. There are plenty of house shrubs to chat about, interesting cordials, and a deep spirits list. Appetizers and bar snacks are hefty enough to turn into a boozy supper if ordered in combination. The seasonal drink menu shifts during its quarter and can include a beautiful amaro sour, a rosa damascena fizz, or hot chocolate with chartreuse marshmallows.

Aryana Afghan Cuisine

Nelo Mayar’s café on Coffee Street has evolved from offering hot lunch plates to a full-service restaurant serving both lunch and dinner. Soft-set dumplings, spins on Afghan street food, and long grain rice dishes top seasonal menus along with pressure-cooked proteins. Vegans will be pleased with vegetables individually sauced. A vinegar-based condiment Mayar calls “chutney” is something to pour on, though it feels more akin to chimichurri. Locals take half-gallons of cardamon tea home with them. Mayar’s cookbook, titled The Afghan Table , is in its third printing.

The Jones Oyster Co.

The Jones Oyster Co. does not take reservations, and is small, but well-designed. It opened a year ago and quickly became a top spot for lunch. Chowder and chargrilled oysters stand out on the menu, and fresh oysters are exceptionally clean and cut nicely off the shell. A smoked fish dip appetizer is delicious, and the by-the-glass list is interesting, especially for white wine. In a fun nod, chef Brant Teske puts Hellmann’s mayo on the lobster roll but Duke’s mayo on his po’ boy.

Rise Bakery

Julian Loué launched his pandemic bread-baking hobby into a second career, opening Rise Bakery on Pendleton Street in West Greenville. The team at Rise produces bread daily for several restaurants — like a kalamata olive and polenta country loaf — but locals stop in for morning pastries and perfectly lacquered croissants. A double-twisted cardamon bun is aromatic and beautifully constructed. Hot and cold sandwiches are available at lunch and Instagram stories announce seasonal pastries made weekly.

Camp Modern American Eatery

Chef Diego Abel Campos has taken over for chef Drew Erikson at Camp, who surprised Greenville with a move to the Reserve at Lake Keowee. The chefs enjoyed a stint at Napa’s the French Laundry together, and Campos’ animated personality is a boon at the attractive restaurant, whose menu is filled with small plates. Shareables lean global, and the menu is divided between field, sea, and land. Fish specials and scallop preparations stand out. Camps’s bar spills out onto Camperdown Plaza, a pretty spot for sipping cocktails outdoors.

Chef Taylor Montgomery raises Scottish Highland cattle and Valais Blacknose sheep at his farm in Western North Carolina, where he also grows heirloom produce for Urban Wren. The wine-centric bar is a place to sip and slow graze and sommelier Chris Gemmill recently joined the team. A salad with Napa cabbage, green mango, and bo kho jerky with tamarind dressing topped with crumbed rice paper is a standout. There are seasonal fish preparations, steak, lamb, and focaccia with a duck-fat candle. A separate chef’s table with intimate views of the kitchen is a fun reservation to get.

A table on the terrace of Jianna is a special spot in the heart of downtown — the balcony overlooks both South Main Street and Falls Park, and chef Michael Kramer and general manager Andrea Ciavardini-Royko have a knack for making every diner feel attended to. A whipped ricotta appetizer is a bestseller. Though known for its pasta dishes, Kramer employs a deft hand when preparing fish. This is a place to order a bottle over a glass of wine, the list is interesting, deeply Italian, and thoughtfully priced.

Open for breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday only, OJ’s serves soul food made from scratch. Olin Johnson set out to reinvent the meat and three with whole foods. Daily specials tend to sell out, so arrive close to 11 a.m., especially for fried chicken or barbecue ribs on Friday. Table service is warm and efficient; it’s possible to drown in the amount of tea served. Cobbler is made in-house, and the stewed greens and fried okra are notable. OJ’s is a great spot for everyone to gather over biscuits.

Big Dave’s All American BBQ

Chef David Jones is larger than life, both in persona and stature. He was executive chef for the Dallas Cowboys and his son, D.J. Jones,  a nose tackle for the Broncos, has been known to pop in. Brisket is a best seller, along with ribs and smoked wings. The loaded fries with house sauce, pulled pork, cheese, sour cream, and chive show up on a sheet tray. Especially crisp fried South Carolina fish is available most Friday and Saturday nights. Sides include creamy mac and cheese and delectable greens.

25 Best Things To Do In South Carolina: The Ultimate SC Bucket List

August 24, 2022 //  by  Southern Trippers

Are you on the hunt for some of the best things to do in South Carolina? You’ve come to the right place!

From stunning waterfalls to the Sky Wheel on Myrtle Beach (and even a few haunted spots for the more courageous traveler), there are plenty of places to visit in South Carolina.

Whether you’re visiting with family and seeking some rest and relaxation or you packed your hiking gear and you’re ready for some adventure, there are plenty of South Carolina activities to try.

If you’re heading to the Palmetto State, we’ve made you a South Carolina bucket list to help you explore this historic state! We wanted to make sure you wouldn’t miss out on the best this state has to offer.

Just a warning: some of these must-see spots are spread out around the state, so get ready to jump in the car for some day trips and make sure to pack your favorite road trip snacks.

Here’s our list of what to do in South Carolina!

Woman in a floral dress and sun hat walks along a beach during a pastel sunset.

Photograph Issaqueena Falls

South Carolina has no shortage of stunning natural attractions. From national parks to animal preserves, there’s plenty this state has to offer, and Issaqueena Falls is no exception.

One of the most gorgeous places to visit in South Carolina, the falls are located near Walhalla about an hour west of Greenville. Visitors can park at Stumphouse Tunnel Park (make sure you have $5 cash for the entry fee dropbox) and take a leisurely 0.3-mile walk to see this 100-foot cascade.

Visiting Issaqueena Falls and the surrounding railroad tunnels from before the Civil War is one of the best things to do in South Carolina with kids.

If you’re looking to go chasing waterfalls, this is the state for you! Make sure to check out our guide to the best waterfalls in South Carolina .

Stroll the Historic District in Charleston

One of the most fun things to do in Charleston is to take a stroll or a guided carriage tour around the city’s Historic District. With more than 1,400 historic homes that have graced the city since 1670, there is plenty to admire.

If you take a walking tour of the area, you can have the chance to tour some of these stately manors. We recommend visiting the Aiken-Rhett House. Here, the lives of enslaved people are central to the tour of the house. These are the people who were the backbone of life at the beautiful home.

Exploring the Historic District is the perfect activity if you are spending a weekend in Charleston! There are also many great places to stay in Charleston !

Explore Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

There are plenty of things to do in Hilton Head , but one of the most unique may be visiting the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge.

With over 4,000 acres of protected land, it’s a great spot for the avid (or the beginner) birding enthusiast. Over 250 different species of birds have been spotted here! If you visit in the summer keep an eye out for the multicolored Painting Bunt, which is a species at risk of endangerment.

Visitors can take a moment to escape the hustle and bustle of Hilton Head and explore 14 miles of peaceful hiking and biking trails in the refuge’s salt marshes and maritime forests.

It’s a great spot for some unique sightseeing in South Carolina!

Sunset over Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge with birds flying.

Visit the South Carolina State Museum

The old-timey landmark is only accessible by boat so it’s the perfect day activity if you’re looking for things to do in South Carolina with kids.

There are a couple of local boat tour companies that will take you out on the water to drive by the 85-foot high tower which has stood in the same spot since the late 1790s.

One of the most special places to visit in South Carolina is the Gullah Museum. Its collection of buildings preserves and interprets the Gullah culture that existed on Hilton Head before 1965 and is unique to the Lowcountry South.

It was established by Louise Miller Cohen, a native islander, who is a direct descendant of the cabin’s original owner. She is known to give tours and help visitors learn what life on the island was like before a bridge to the mainland was built in 1956.

Visitors should note that the museum isn’t open on holidays.

Get Spooked at Old Sheldon Church Ruins

Built in the mid-1700s, these ruins were once the beautiful Prince William Parrish Church. It did not stand for long before being burned down during the Revolutionary War. The church was eventually rebuilt only to be destroyed again during the Civil War.

With such a sordid history, it makes sense that legends of hauntings now mark this place. Eerie sounds have been recorded and a ghost has been spotted crying over a child’s grave.

Despite the dark past, this is a great South Carolina attraction for photography. The tall oak trees are covered in Spanish moss adding to the creepy atmosphere.

This is surely one of the most interesting places in South Carolina!

While there are bus services available, the coverage and frequency may not meet everyone’s needs. If you move to Greenville, plan on relying on private transportation or set up a carpool system with friends and coworkers.

3. Traffic congestion

As Greenville continues to grow in popularity and public transit struggles to keep up, traffic congestion has become a common issue, particularly during peak hours. The increased population and ongoing development projects can lead to traffic jams and delays, especially on major roadways and during rush hours. The city has been investing in alleviating congestion, but more work is needed. If you’re commuting to Greenville from a nearby suburb, plan in additional time.

4. Few public parks

While Greenville offers beautiful natural surroundings and tons of nearby destinations, it lacks the abundance of public parks that many other cities offer. However, there are still plenty of options, including Falls Park and Cleveland Park . If you make the move to Greenville, keep in mind that there isn’t an expansive park system.

5. Limited nightlife

Although Greenville has a vibrant downtown with various restaurants and bars, the city’s nightlife options may not be as extensive as those in larger cities. If you prefer a bustling nightlife with a wide range of clubs, late-night entertainment venues, and cultural events, you may find the options in Greenville relatively limited.

A total solar eclipse is happening this spring. Here are best places to watch in Upstate.

This spring's total solar eclipse will be the last one in a long time, so mark your calendars.

The total solar eclipse visible in the United States will occur on April 8. The next total solar eclipse will not be seen in the area until August 2044.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun, blocking the face of the sun completely, according to NASA. Those viewing the eclipse from its path of totality―locations where the moon's shadow completely covers the sun―will experience a total solar eclipse. During this phenomenon, the sky will be shrouded in temporary darkness as if it were dawn or dusk, and the outer atmosphere of the sun, known as the corona, will be visible.

The last time a total solar eclipse passed transcontinentally was August 21, 2017, the first time since 1918. It took about an hour and 40 minutes to cross from Oregon to South Carolina. In Greenville News archive photos, folks are seen around that time looking through a telescope at Roper Mountain Science Center during an Eclipse Extravaganza.

Before this, the last two total eclipses visible from South Carolina occurred in 1900 and 1970.

This year's total eclipse will be the last one visible in the state until 2029's partial eclipse.

Solar eclipse events stir up much anticipation and excitement for millions of people throughout the nation. However, it is important to remember to practice safety precautions in advance. To view the eclipse, bystanders will want to make sure to purchase safe solar viewers, or "eclipse glasses," to avoid eye injury or blindness caused by the sun's harsh light.

When will the eclipse start? How long will it last?

Total solar eclipses can last anywhere from 10 seconds to 7.5 minutes, according to NASA . In 12,000 years from 4000 BCE to 8000 BCE, the longest total solar eclipse will occur on July 16, 2186, and will last seven minutes and 29 seconds, its trajectory moving from Columbia, Venezuela, and Guyana.

In comparison, the shortest total solar eclipse took place on Feb. 3, 919 CE, lasting only nine seconds.

Since South Carolina will not be in the path of totality, the event will appear as a partial eclipse, visible from 1:48 p.m. to 4:27 p.m. in the state. It will peak in the Upstate around 3:05 p.m., blocking out 85% of the sun.

Where can I watch the eclipse in the Upstate?

The eclipse's magnitude will depend on where you are viewing it in the state, appearing larger in the Upstate and smaller in the Lowcountry and coastal areas.

The following is a selection of cities and the best times to watch the eclipse via eclipse2024.org:

∎ Anderson: 3:08 p.m.

∎ Charleston: 3:08 p.m.

∎ Columbia: 3:10 p.m.

∎ Greenville: 3:09 p.m.

∎ Myrtle Beach: 3:13 p.m.

∎ Spartanburg: 3:09 p.m.

For more cities and times, visit here.

Eclipse safety, where to buy protective glasses

Those who plan on watching the total solar eclipse should proceed with caution. It is not safe to look directly at the sun without specialized protection for solar viewing except during the brief total phase when the moon blocks the face of the bright sun (when you can no longer view the sun through eclipse glasses or a solar viewer, it is safe), according to NASA.

Partial phases of the solar eclipse, which happen before and after totality, must be viewed through safe solar viewing glasses ("eclipse glasses") or a safe handheld solar viewer at all times. Safe solar viewers meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard and are thousands of times darker than regular sunglasses. Discard eclipse glasses or handheld viewers if you notice any signs of damage.

"Viewing any part of the Sun through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope that does not have a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury," according to NASA. "It is strongly advised not to look through these devices while wearing eclipse glasses or using a handheld solar viewer because the concentrated solar rays will burn through the filter, causing serious eye injury." For more safety information regarding the eclipse, visit NASA.

Roper Mountain Science Center will have glasses

Although Roper Mountain Science Center will not have eclipse programming on April 8, they are inviting the public to come watch the Starry Night feature "Eclipse: The Sun Revealed" at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. during March. Guests who visit Starry Nights or Afternoons Explorations will get a free pair of eclipse glasses with their admission ticket courtesy of Greenville Water.

Track the eclipse's path of totality

The following major cities in the U.S. will be in the eclipse's 115-mile-wide path of totality:

∎ Dallas, Texas

∎ Idabel, Oklahoma.

∎ Little Rock, Arkansas.

∎ Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

∎ Paducah, Kentucky.

∎ Carbondale, Illinois.

∎ Evansville, Indiana.

∎ Cleveland, Ohio

∎ Erie, Pennsylvania.

∎ Buffalo, N.Y.

∎ Burlington, Vermont.

∎ Lancaster, New Hampshire.

∎ Caribou, Maine

Read the USA Today story below to learn when the eclipse's path of totality will make its way toward these cities.

The 15 Most Beautiful Places In North Carolina, According To Locals

When it comes to beauty, both natural and man-made, North Carolina can’t help but show off.

best places to visit in greenville south carolina

Andy Anderson

In a room full of Southerners, it would be nearly impossible to find two with the exact same definition of North Carolina. Some may credit the small towns and scenic stops within the Blue Ridge Mountains as the source of the state’s wonder; others grew up experiencing the wide beaches running parallel to the Atlantic, forever associating sand dunes, summer nights, and unforgettable sunsets with the Tar Heel State. There would probably also be several with special places in their hearts for the Piedmont’s rolling hills, pine trees, and roster of bustling cities.

So, while the idea that North Carolina has everything may be broad and a touch clichéd, it’s a statement that can be proved with an endless amount of evidence. In the words of Lon Bounsanga, chef and owner of SAAP in Cary, “Where else can you go in the South that two hours one way you can dip your toes in the sand and two hours the other way you can breathe in the mountain air?”

Across the Tar Heel State’s nearly 54,000 square miles, you’ll find an extensive number of places that can be labeled “beautiful.” To narrow down the list, though, we went straight to the source. As no one is more knowledgeable—or passionate—about the region than those who call the state home, we asked several North Carolinians to share the small towns , parks, hotels, and unexpected sights that continue to impress them with their beauty.

Read on to discover 15 of the most beautiful places in North Carolina, according to locals.

The Outer Banks

North Carolina may have impressive mountain scenery, but its 3,375 miles of coastline refuse to be outdone. Case in point: The Outer Banks. “The Outer Banks are, by far, the place to be when talking about the best beaches in North Carolina. This stretch offers calm waves, friendly people, and a wide-open beach,” says Zach Girgenti, the director of outdoor experiences at Snowbird Mountain Lodge in Robbinsville. Plus, he says, you can’t miss Jockey’s Ridge State Park, which is home to the tallest natural sand dune on the East Coast.

Biltmore Estate

Biltmore Estate ’s resplendence is legendary, and it’s one of Theresa Chiettini's—general manager of The Fearrington House Inn, Restaurant & Spa in Pittsboro—recommendations for travelers exploring Asheville. A combination of both manmade glamor and natural beauty, the 8,000-acre property is filled with inspiring architecture and expertly maintained gardens and grounds. No matter the season you visit, you’re guaranteed to leave feeling just a little bit more in love with Asheville—and North Carolina as a whole.

Airlie Gardens

LISA CORSON

Live oaks draped in Spanish moss, thousands of blooming azaleas and bright tulips, and lush foliage cover the grounds of Airlie Gardens , a 67-acre private garden in Wilmington that Mary Ann Fearing—a born and bred North Carolinian and senior publicist at J/PR —calls one of her “all-time favorites.” “It's whimsical and enchanting and reminds me just how beautiful Mother Nature truly is,” she says. Open daily, the garden can be accessed with tickets purchased online or on-site.

“‘Shack,’ as we like to call it, is a tiny island right off of Beaufort , and it’s one of the most beautiful places in the state,” says Fearing. You’ll need to take the ferry, or a private boat, to reach the 8-mile-long island, but the effort is worth it. “To make it even more lovely, it's also home to some of the state's wild horses. Watching them gallop down the shore is pretty incredible, even after seeing it a million times,” she adds.

Cherohala Highway

A 43-mile stretch of scenic byway that Girgenti calls “breathtaking,” Cherohala Highway starts in Tennessee and ends in Robbinsville, North Carolina. The entire drive can take anywhere from two to three hours, depending on how often you stop to admire the overlooks and photo ops. Once you arrive in Robbinsville, you’re in for even more natural wonder. “Robbinsville is home to some of the darkest skies in the state, perfect for stargazing,” he adds.

Highlands’ Waterfalls

CAMERON REYNOLDS

“By far one of the coolest mountain towns in North Carolina, Highlands brings some of the best hiking experiences and waterfall tours around,” says Girgenti. To see these natural water features up close, simply strap on your waterproof hiking shoes and jump in the car to begin checking off some of the area’s most impressive ones—including Dry Falls, Glen Falls, and Secret Falls. And if there’s time in your itinerary to hike nearby Whiteside Mountain, you won’t regret it. “The views are so worth it,” says Girgenti.

Courtesy The Swag

“Just outside of Asheville is a wonderful hotel called The Swag , a Relais & Chateaux property that offers an amazing view of the Appalachian mountains and fun hiking experiences,” says Chiettini. Its mountaintop setting, nearly a mile in elevation, is a large reason why guests are eager to book the property—and wind up never wanting to leave. On clear days, the sweeping vistas can extend for nearly 50 miles.

The Brunswick Islands' Beaches

The beaches on the Brunswick Islands have their own brand of magic all year round, but there’s one season that’s particularly majestic. “Starting in late fall, you can watch both the sunrise and sunset over the ocean,” says Bounsanga, referencing the natural phenomena experienced on Oak Island, Holden Beach, Caswell Beach, Sunset Beach, and Ocean Isle Beach. Combined with the beaches’ unique orientation—they face south and run east to west—the sun’s placement this time of year results in an extraordinary double feature, one that’s best experienced via a comfortable beach chair.

Linville Gorge

Jillian Meyer Photo /Getty Images

“Often referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon of the East,’ Linville Gorge is one of my favorite areas to hike on the East Coast,” says Girgenti. “With some of the cliffs in the gorge reaching over 1,000 feet, Linville offers some of the most beautiful and exhilarating hikes around.” While in the area, be sure to snap a photo of Linville Falls and complete the Table Rock Hike, a moderate journey that covers over 2 miles roundtrip.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

There are a few reasons the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the most visited national parks in the country, but its overall beauty is certainly one of the most prominent. “The natural landscape changes with each season, from being coated with a beautiful snowfall in the winter to laced with colorful blooms in the spring,” says Angie Chan, the executive pastry chef at Cataloochee Ranch . For an elevated view of the region, stay at Cataloochee Ranch, which sits at 4,800 feet in elevation. “The sunrise and sunsets are particularly beautiful looking over the valley,” she shares.

NC Highway 12

Sometimes, there’s beauty in both the journey and the destination—as evidenced by the 148-mile-long highway connecting the islands and peninsulas of the northern portion of the Outer Banks. “There's something about driving down Hatteras Island on Highway 12, with sand dunes encapsulating you on both sides of the road, that brings me so much joy,” says Fearing. “Its natural beauty brings a sense of calmness, and the memory it leaves you with as you make your way down the island will stay with you forever.”

Cameron Reynolds

North Carolina has no shortage of picturesque mountain towns, but Boone tops the list for both Girgenti and Bounsanga. According to the latter, it’s all about “the greenery, the clean, crisp air, and the views.” Girgenti also notes its access to “three different ski mountains during the winter, Grandfather Mountain and a handful of epic hikes during the summer, the most stunning fall foliage during autumn, and some of the best weather in the country during the spring. “ In short, it’s “an outdoor paradise and one of the most unique small Appalachian towns,” he says.

Heights House Hotel

Courtesy Heights House Hotel

Take one look at the Heights House Hotel in Raleigh, and you’ll immediately begin dreaming of a cozy, picture-perfect getaway in the City of Oaks. “It's a restored 1858 Italianate mansion hotel and is beautiful, inside and out,” says Fearing. “The attention to detail that the owners put into this restoration is incredible, and I just love how effortlessly the design blends the old world with modern touches.”

Asheville’s River Arts District

John Burke/Getty Images

While the Asheville area is known for its natural beauty, particularly when fall foliage is at its peak, there’s one part of the city that stands out to Chan: the River Arts District. Located along the French Broad River, the area is made up of various art studios, galleries, restaurants, and murals, each as interesting as the next. “Asheville is known for its creativity, and every stop throughout the River Arts District is a look into that spirit,” she says. “Even the buildings have been made into a unique piece of art—from a simple layer of bright, colorful paint to murals painted by local artists.”

McIntyre’s Books

Courtesy McIntyre’s Books

Ask any Southern bibliophile about the beauty of a well-stocked bookstore, and there’s a good chance they’ll launch into an extensive, impassioned narrative. There are quite a few must-shop bookstores across the region, but there’s one in Pittsboro’s Fearrington Village that Chiettini says is “one of the top independent bookstores in the South.” Inside McIntyre’s Books , you’ll find quiet corners, unexpected discoveries, and shelf after shelf of page-turning stories; new purchase in hand, grab a seat on one of the benches out front and settle in for a relaxing afternoon in the neighborhood.
