Arts & entertainment, design & style, travel & leisure, search concrete playground, tim minchin's stage musical version of 'groundhog day' is finally coming to australia in 2024.

Déjà vu comes with the territory with this stage version of the Bill Murray-starring classic comedy, which will play an exclusive Aussie season in Melbourne.

Tim Minchin's Stage Musical Version of 'Groundhog Day' Is Finally Coming to Australia in 2024

It's Groundhog Day The Musical — and it's finally making its way to the Australian stages ten years after it was first announced . Back in 2014, Australian comedian, musician, actor and writer Tim Minchin ( Upright ) revealed that he was making a song-filled onstage version of the Bill Murray-starring classic comedy. Then, the end result premiered in London in 2016. Next came Broadway in 2017, with 2024 marking Australia's turn. Prepare for plenty of déjà vu in Melbourne from January.

Feeling like you've been there and seen this comes with the territory with this production, of course, given that that's what the story is all about. Obviously, you've probably seen the film. In fact, you've likely done so more than once. Still, when Groundhog Day The Musical hits Princess Theatre from Wednesday, January 24–Sunday, April 21, 2024, this'll be Aussie theatregoers' first chance to catch the stage show on home soil.

The tale remains the same, with Pittsburgh TV weatherman Phil Connors tasked with travelling to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to cover the annual Groundhog Day event — and none too happy about it, oozing cynicism as everyone else around him embraces the occasion. After a cantankerous day, he wakes up the next morning to find that everything is repeating again. And, that's how every day continues, no matter what he does or how he tries to tinker with the cycling routine.

On the big screen (and on VHS and streaming queues since), the result proved hilarious, and also one of Murray's best-ever roles. For the stage iteration, Minchin teamed up with screenwriter Danny Rubin — who originally co-wrote Groundhog Day 's movie script and won a BAFTA in the process — plus Minchin's Matilda The Musical director Matthew Warchus. Their theatre efforts earned Groundhog Day The Musical Tony Award nominations, as well Olivier Award wins for Best New Musical and Best Actor.

Yes, Groundhog Day The Musical 's Australian-premiere season runs across Groundhog Day itself, aka February 2. Yes, you can listen to Sonny and Cher's 'I Got You Babe' on repeat now to celebrate. And yes, like the musical version of Matilda , this'll likely return to the big screen at some point — but after the Melbourne season.

Groundhog Day The Musical comes Down Under exclusive to the Victorian capital — and if you're wondering who'll step into Murray's ( Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ) shoes, and Andie MacDowell's ( Maid ) as Phil's producer Rita Hanson, too, the cast for the show's Australian run hasn't yet been announced.

tim minchin tour melbourne

"I have waited seven years for this moment! Groundhog Day The Musical , like Matilda The Musical , has a unique mixture of darkness and light, of head and heart, and of complexity and joy, and I've been convinced since its first iteration that Australians will love it!" said Minchin, announcing the Aussie premiere.

"I'm so excited that the run is going to be in Melbourne, the city I lived in when I wrote my breakout comedy shows, and the place where — when things weren't going so well — I learned how important it is to find the beauty and hope in the day to day."

tim minchin tour melbourne

"Following its celebrated run at London's Old Vic Theatre, where it broke all box office records, I couldn't be happier to be bringing Tim Minchin and Danny Rubin's musical masterpiece to the Princess Theatre in Melbourne (coincidentally, the very venue which was home to Matilda back in 2016)," added Warchus.

" Groundhog Day The Musical , I know, will surprise many people. Perhaps the most joy-filled show I have ever directed, this magical tale of redemption somehow manages to be both a truly hilarious romantic comedy and a profoundly moving and inspiring message of hope. I love the original movie and I love this adaptation. It inspires us to be the best possible versions of ourselves, to break free of our repetitive gloom and to learn how to love life. All that plus a rodent who predicts the weather... what more could you ask for?"

Now playing – princess theatre.

Direct from its record-breaking run in London Groundhog Day the Musical is now playing at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre.

Phil Connors, a cynical Pittsburgh TV weatherman is sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day event in the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Caught in a time loop, he’s forced to relive the same day again and again… and again. As Phil recognises that an infinite loop offers infinite possibilities, is there a lesson being learned and will he ever figure out the secret to break the cycle?

From the award-winning minds of Tim Minchin, Danny Rubin and Matthew Warchus, this brilliant new production based on the classic movie will play exclusively in Melbourne. Don’t miss your chance to experience the heartfelt and hilarious musical Broadway World have called “a theatrical triumph”.

Scheduled to go ahead on Saturday November 26 at the Palace Foreshore, the outdoor show will see the musical comedian and polymath perform the same set he delivered at this year’s Splendour In The Grass and Darwin Arts Festival .

Announcing it today (September 19) in a video shared to his social media platforms, Minchin described the set as “just me running around the stage like a goose, and you, hopefully, having a good time”.

Also featured is Minchin’s upcoming single ‘The Aeroplane’, which will be released later this year as part of the soundtrack for season two of Upright .

Tickets for the show go on sale at 11am this Wednesday (September 21), with a Live Nation pre-sale starting at 10am tomorrow (September 20). See more details on the pre-sale here , with the tickets themselves available here .

Minchin released ‘Apart Together’ in November of 2020. NME featured it in a round-up of the best Australian releases from that month , with David James Young writing: “[Minchin’s] unique approach to comedy, theatre and writing has allowed his work to expand to a global audience, crossing medium from stage musical to television and back again.

“And now he’s finally made a studio album, mixing his blend of witticisms, acute observational lyricism and sucker-punches to the proverbial heartstrings. The dream of Australia’s foremost rock ’n’ roll nerd is finally coming true.”

Tim Minchin On Returning To Melbourne, Running Really Hard And Writing Songs For A Big Philosophical

By Emma Bishop 22nd Mar 2024

  • X Post (Twitter)

tim minchin tour melbourne

It was 2002 when Tim Minchin moved to Melbourne, a city where he spent four of the most formative years of his life. “It was such a big thing for a fifth-generation Perth boy to move to Melbourne,” Minchin says. “Trying to get gigs and then quite quickly ending up in a position where I could play the Palais or Hamer Hall... it’s symbolic of something I suppose.”

During those years in Melbourne, Minchin did a lot of figuring things out—spreading his cabaret wings at The Butterfly Club, honing his musical comedy skills at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and spending late nights northside of the city chasing the catharsis of making music.

Returning to Melbourne almost two decades on for the Australian exclusive season of Groundhog Day The Musical at the Princess Theatre, Minchin is characteristically reflective about his time living in the city and the extraordinary success he's found since. “I love Melbourne. I’m constantly shocked by what’s happened in the years since I left. It’s been a big 17 years," Minchin says.

"I played at the Palais Theatre first in 2009. Places can go from something you dream of to something you’re nostalgic about so quickly. They’re an aspiration and now they’re part of my history—and that’s really f****** weird.”

From late nights feasting at Market Lane’s Cantonese institution Flower Drum to dinners at Mario’s Cafe, jazz gigs at Bar Open and drinks at Henry Sugar, it’s Melbourne’s unpretentious, good-times diners and dive bars that are part of Minchin's Melbourne history. And he always returns to them when he comes back.

“Restaurant-wise, I always go to Mario’s.”

Neon sign.

Fitzroy’s Mario’s Cafe is top of Minchin’s Melbourne dining hit list. Having been around for over 35 years, this Brunswick Street staple by migrant mates Mario Maccarone and Mario De Pasqual is all about family service. "Mario’s is right by where my manager had his offices. It just brings everything back," Minchin shares.

“Jazz is improvising in the corner of Bar Open—that’s my idea of heaven.”

Dimly lit bar.

Right down the road from Mario's Cafe is northside staple Bar Open. “I have such a history with places like Bar Open,” Minchin shares. “I sent them CDs and I couldn’t get a gig there… then, everything changed and I kind of skipped it. That place brings everything back for me. So often you’ll just walk into Bar Open and there’ll be a kick-ass jazz trio stuffed in the corner playing not even through a PA. For me, that’s the ultimate way to listen to music," he adds.

“Every time I’m in Melbourne, I’ll do a Princes Park run, a Merri Creek run, or a run around the tan. That’s what home is.”

Person running through bushes.

Wherever he is in the world, Minchin will always go for a run. During his time living in Melbourne, it was a way to blow off steam. “I really like running. When I lived in North Melbourne, I used to run a 10K and I used to run it really hard because I was so frustrated in those early days—just not quite knowing what to do with my skills and playing cover bands and stuff," Minchin shares. "It was my way of giving myself a goal that I could achieve."

Minchin's achieved many goals since—most notably for his role composing and writing lyrics for the Tony Award-winning and Grammy Award-nominated  Matilda the Musical.  His most recent theatrical endeavour, Groundhog Day the Musical , arrives in Melbourne fresh from a record-breaking run in London and kicked off a limited season at the Princess Theatre just a few weeks ago.

“Groundhog Day is a big philosophical musical, but it’s fun and it makes you laugh and cry.”

People performing on stage.

Like any piece of art Tim Minchin puts out into the world, Groundhog Day The Musical grapples with big, philosophical themes, beautifully balancing light and dark in each poetic and witty piece of musical storytelling. But “it’s not a wankfest,” Minchin assures us. “Every piece [of music] is part of a philosophical puzzle... and it’s fun for the whole family. It’s really joyous and really silly. I think Australian audiences are going to f****** love it," he adds. We're pretty sure they will, too.

Catch Groundhog Day the Musical at the Princess Theatre until 20 April. Find out more and where to book your tickets here.

tim minchin tour melbourne

OK sailors, here’s the goss on upcoming shows. Big breath…

MELBOURNE: As most of you know, we can no longer play to a full capacity crowd this weekend. It’s a total bugger, BUT – with a lot of work and wiggling and a few minor miracles – we are now going to do 6 shows at half capacity! Friday, Saturday and Sunday are going ahead, BUT HALF OF YOU WILL BE ASKED TO MOVE to a show next week. Which is obviously really annoying, but hopefully better than cancelling. And on the upside, you will have considerably better seats at the rescheduled shows! Silver linings. Small mercies. Grimacing smiley faces. The venue will be contacting you today or tomorrow. PLEASE keep an eye on your email.

BRISBANE and SYDNEY: Sadly, despite our desperate best efforts, we are moving dates to August and September respectively. Again, you will be contacted by your ticketing agency, so please keep an eye out for the email. NEWCASTLE, you should have already been contacted about that reschedule.

I’m so sorry about all this. It’s a total fucker of a thing. Meanwhile, please, if you get a chance, get a frickin vaccine. Thanks! Love Tim.

The Tim Minchin – BACK, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney tour dates will now be scheduled as follows:

All tickets remain valid for the rescheduled shows without the need for exchange. Patrons unable to attend the new dates can obtain a refund from the point of purchase. Refund requests are to be submitted prior to 5pm, Sat 3rd July 2021 for Melbourne and 5pm, Thu 29th July 2021 for Brisbane and Sydney.

Tim, I get the reasons behind the need to minimise numbers but I own a 7-day a week business in Gippsland. I’ve had to organise staff and am already in Melbourne until Sunday. I’ve just been informed that our tickets have been rescheduled to Tuesday. I’m disappointed that the organisation required to allow me to be here was now for nothing. I’ve been looking forward to this concert for two years.

Nat Bootle on 2nd of July 2021

Thanks, for letting us know. Hopefully the arts centre gets back to us before Sunday.

Theresa on 1st of July 2021

We love you, Tim! Thank you for rearranging your schedule so we can still enjoy seeing you! We are looking forward to it immensely.

Andrea C on 1st of July 2021

Tim, so sorry that COVID-19 has stuffed up your plans once more! Good on you for pushing through. Hope your excitement of performing again will get you through 6 shows in a row!

Tim Tszyu photo blowing minds before world title fight

It’s not hard to see why Tim Tszyu’s final face off is creating so much chatter and why the jokes are flying thick and fast.

Tim Tszyu really has a tall task ahead of him.

The Australian is taking a massive gamble to fight Sebastian Fundora in Las Vegas on Sunday after Keith Thurman pulled out just days ahead of their blockbuster fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Their final face off on Friday morning showed how big that gamble is when the 29-year-old stood in front of his 1.97m opponent, popularly referred to as the “Towering Inferno”.

Tszyu said the fight felt like “David vs Goliath”.

BOXING: Tszyu v Fundora + Zerafa v Lara live from Las Vegas | SUN 31 MAR 11AM AEDT | Exclusive to Main Event, order on Kayo Sports. No Kayo subscription needed.

Photos from the face off have been spreading around the internet with many fans blown away by the size mismatch.

Despite his size, Fundora has found a home in the superwelterweight division and has the unlikely chance to unify the belts in the division when facing Tszyu.

The lanky American fighter will have an 18cm reach advantage over the 1.75m Aussie.

Tim Tszyu and Sebastian Fundora face off.

The photo had jokes flying thick and fast.

“Good god Tszyu got a tall task ahead of him,” one Twitter user wrote.

One wrote: “I thought Tim was on his knees at first”.

Another posted: “Can Tszyu step up to the challenge?”

One fan told Main Event’s Ben Damon: “My God, that’s a massive height difference. Luckily for Tim it’s easier punching up than down. I’m tipping the tall timber will be falling in round 2”.

The height differential forced Team Tszyu to launch a “worldwide search” for sparring partners capable of replicating Fundora’s size and style at southpaw.

United States-born tall timbers Mykal Fox and Ardreal Holmes Jr answered the call to help Tszyu prepare.

Fundora looms as a real threat to Tszyu, considering he was beating Brian Mendoza before Mendoza knocked him out in last year’s mega upset.

Tszyu defeated Mendoza in October and had been sparring with him in preparation for Thurman.

While he doesn’t quite have the same name recognition in America as Thurman, Fundora is a serious chance of ending Tszyu’s undefeated record with his unique physique.

“He’s a freak of nature,” No Limit fight promoter George Rose said this week of Fundora.

“How he makes the weight I have no idea. He’s an impossible opponent.

“It’s not an issue for Fundora because he fights six-foot guys all the time.

“It’s a blessing and a curse. The fact Fundora was on this card already, he can step up into the main event straight away. But it’s an absolute curse because he’s the bogeyman of the division. It’s such a hard fight to prepare for.

“The conversations will change to, ‘How the hell do you land one on Fundora?’

Rose said Tszyu’s decision to take the Fundora fight on such short notice was “mind-blowing”.

“He’s literally a guy you need a 12-week camp for,” he said.

“You don’t do this on 12 days, you do it on 12 weeks. Tim Tszyu’s about to do it on 12 days and that’s what’s absolutely mind-blowing to me.

“The one mentality I have is I never consider Tim Tszyu losing, so I never think about that alternate world scenario.

“I believe Tim wins every day of the week, he beats anyone who steps in the ring with him.”

They are two of America’s tallest fighters and they have joined forces with Tim Tszyu to help the Australian bring down Sebastian Fundora in Las Vegas.

Australian boxing’s most monumental weekend ever could get even bigger over the next few days, with a third Australian hoping to fight for a world title.

he Nikita Tszyu sweepstakes curse has struck again, as a third fighter in as many weeks to come agonisingly close, but not able to clinch a PPV bout with the rising star of Australian boxing.

tim minchin tour melbourne

TIM MINCHIN , internationally renowned award-winning musician, comedian, actor, writer and composer, will return to the Australian stage with his first national tour since 2012.

The Australian premiere of BACK will commence in Adelaide on Friday March 8 at the Thebarton Theatre and will be followed by performances in Canberra, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane .

It will be the Perth-bred artist’s first Australian tour since returning to the country after more than a decade living overseas and the long-awaited follow up to his consecutive sold-out national tours of Tim Minchin Vs the Orchestra in 2011 and 2012.

BACK is billed as “Old Songs, New Songs, F*** You Songs”, hinting at a set list of material from all corners of Minchin’s eclectic – and often iconoclastic – repertoire.

With a long history of sold out tours – his most recent Australian one-off performance as part of Dark Mofo in June sold every ticket in under 15 minutes – fans will be given priority access to tickets via Ticketmaster Verified Fan © registration.

Ticketmaster Verified Fan © registration will open at 7am (AEST) Thursday, August 30 until 5pm (AEST) Sunday, September 2 and will enable early access to tickets for verified fans from 12pm Wednesday, September 5 (local time), for 24 hours.

Tickets for all shows go on sale at 2pm Thursday, 6 September (local time). For complete tour and ticket information, visit: livenation.com.au .

The music virtuoso also announced that a portion of the tour profits will be donated to a local charity in each city, details of which can soon be found at timminchin.com .

Minchin has been celebrated globally for writing the music and lyrics for “Matilda the Musical”, which has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed musicals of the last 20 years, winning a record 7 Olivier Awards, 13 Helpmann Awards and 5 Tony Awards. It continues to run in the West End and has already played in over 50 cities worldwide.

He also wrote music and lyrics for the musical adaption of “Groundhog Day”, which after an acclaimed limited run at The Old Vic in London in 2016, debuted on Broadway in April 2017 and won the Olivier Award for Best Musical in 2017.

Meanwhile, Minchin has ruffled feathers in Australia with his ARIA-nominated charity single, Come Home Cardinal Pell and the Marriage Equality parody, I Still Call Australia Homophobic . His UWA Graduation speech has been watched by tens of millions of people worldwide.

BACK will mark Minchin’s return to the stage, following several film and TV appearances which earned him a handful of acting accolades, including the Qantas Orry-Kelly Award at the 2017 Australians in Film Awards and a 2016 Logie Award for Most Outstanding Supporting Actor for The Secret River.

He most recently starred in the ABC 2018 comedy series “Squinters” and will appear as Friar Tuck in the up-coming Hollywood release “Robin Hood” in cinemas November 2018. In 2019 he will also star in “UPRIGHT”, a new eight-part drama series, which he will co-write with The Chaser’s Chris Taylor, actor-writers Leon Ford and Kate Mulvaney, and co-produce with Lingo Pictures for Foxtel and Sky UK.

“Not only is Tim Minchin outrageously funny, he is also a beautiful singer and pianist. His piano solos are enough on their own to warrant the entry price.” The Daily Telegraph

“DON’T GUSH. Whatever you do, don’t gush. Ahhh – bugger it. Tim Minchin is an ungodly angel of hellfire and mirth. He is the impish love child of Animal, the Muppet, and Bill Nighy, brought up on a diet of Carl Sa-gan and Christopher Hitchens. And Ben Folds Five and Monty Python. If you’re unfamiliar with this Perth-boy-gone-global, familiarise yourself now.”  The Adelaide Advertiser

“Minchin has enormous presence, a superior handle on self-deprecation, brilliant timing and an inexhaustible armoury of withering looks.” Courier Mail, Brisbane

The highly anticipated tour will also see the artist return to New Zealand for a limited number of shows in Auckland and Wellington.
