British R&B singer Ella Mai is back with another hit from her upcoming debut album. Her single “Boo’d Up” served as one of the top songs of the summer and tied for the longest-running No. 1 among songs by women on the  R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay  chart. Starting next month, Mai will open for Bruno Mars on his 24K Magic World Tour.

Ella Mai's 'Boo'd Up' Ties For Most Weeks at No. 1 by a Woman On R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay Chart

“Trip” features a smooth beat as Mai sings about how she’s through with getting tripped up over a guy whose love seems too good to be true. The recently released music video is visually stunning, with deep blues and purples that match the melancholy tone of the lyrics. 

Ella Mai’s eponymous debut album is set to release on Oct. 12.

• The song's theme of being heads in heels in love with a guy is similar to Ella Mai's breakthrough single " Boo'd Up ."
• Like "Boo'd Up," the song was produced by DJ Mustard. (Ella Mai is signed to the California beatmaker's label 10 Summers Records). "Trip" originated with some chords that Mustard came up with using the beat making program Fruity Loops. He played the chords for Mai and while she worked on the lyrics he started doing the drums. By the end of that particular day's session, they'd completed the full song.
• The song finds Ella Mai overthinking a relationship, which is a trap she's personally fallen into before. She told Genius : "I definitely have been a situation where I felt like this might be too good to be true and you kind of take a backseat, and it's like, 'Maybe I should chill out?' But then, again, again, in the sense of what the song is, I come to find out that I was just making myself believe that, because at the end of the day, sometimes, it's not too good to be true. Port of Baltimore suspends ship traffic after bridge collapse: What it means for travel

Travel is being impacted by Tuesday’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse along Interstate 695 in Baltimore, Maryland. 

Drivers were immediately directed to take alternate routes through the city, following the early morning incident. What’s less clear is what the bridge collapse may mean for upcoming cruises in and out of Baltimore.

“Vessel traffic into and out of the Port of Baltimore is suspended until further notice,” the Port of Baltimore posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Rep. Kweisi Mfume, D-Md., whose district includes the bridge and the port, called the collapse an “unthinkable horror” and said he had spoken with Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and the White House.

“They are responding with all of the assets at their disposal,” he said in a statement. “Our prayers right now are for the missing individuals and victims of this tragedy. We thank God for the effective service of our first responders.”

Here’s what we know.

Which cruises go to Baltimore?

Several major cruise lines serve Baltimore. According to the Cruise Lines International Association, the industry’s leading trade group, published itineraries in the 2024 calendar year include a dozen ships making 115 stops in Baltimore.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Key Bridge that occurred last night and extend our support and heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” CLIA spokesperson Anne Madison said in an emailed statement. “We join everyone in extending our thanks and appreciation to the first responders and emergency workers in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and other professionals who are working with one goal in mind—to save lives. We are closely following this situation.”

Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas has a roundtrip itinerary scheduled to depart Baltimore on April 12, according to the cruise line’s website. “We are deeply saddened by the tragedy and collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and extend our heartfelt prayers to all those impacted,” a spokesperson for the line said in an email. “We are closely monitoring the situation, and our port logistics team is currently working on alternatives for Vision of the Seas’ ongoing and upcoming sailings.”

Carnival’s website shows Carnival Pride and Carnival Legend also have sailings into or out of Baltimore set for April. 

Carnival Legend will temporarily move operations to Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship's current cruise, which left for a planned round-trip sailing from Baltimore on March 24, will end in Norfolk on Sunday. Passengers will then receive free bus rides to Baltimore. The vessel's next cruise will sail round-trip from Norfolk later that day.

“Our thoughts remain with the impacted families and first responders in Baltimore,” Carnival president Christine Duffy said in a statement. “We appreciate the pledge made by President Biden today to dedicate all available resources to reopen Baltimore Harbor to marine traffic as soon as possible. As those plans are finalized, we will update our future cruise guests on when we will return home to Baltimore, but in the meantime, we appreciate the quick response and support from officials in Norfolk.”

The cruise line has not yet shared plans for Carnival Pride.

American Cruise Lines has roundtrip sailings from Baltimore scheduled in May, according to its website.

“We will monitor the situation and make adjustments to future cruises if needed, but at the present time our schedules remain unaffected, and our thoughts remain with those affected by the immediate situation and rescue efforts underway,” an American Cruise Lines spokesperson told USA TODAY.

Norwegian Cruise Line doesn’t appear to have any Baltimore sailings until September on Norwegian Sky . The line will stay in contact with the port and share any changes with passengers and travel partners, according to a spokesperson.

"In the meantime, we wish the city of Baltimore strength during this very unfortunate event," they said in an email.

Alternate routes for the Baltimore bridge

Most drivers can take Interstate 95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or Interstate 895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) to avoid the collapsed bridge. However Maryland Transportation Authority notes there are some exceptions .

Vehicles carrying hazardous materials, including more than 10 pounds of propane, are not allowed in the tunnels. Additionally, vehicles more than 13-feet and 6-inches high or 8-feet wide may not use the 1-895 Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. Vehicles more than 14-feet and 6-inches high or 11-feet wide may not use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel. 

Those vehicles should use the western portion of I-695 instead.

Planning a Road Trip for the Total Solar Eclipse? Here’s Why You Should Drive Extra Carefully

Scientists found a 31 percent increase in fatal car crashes around the 2017 total solar eclipse, akin to spikes in traffic risk on busy holiday weekends

Millions of people are expected travel to see the total solar eclipse on April 8 . And with many of them driving—clogging the roads with extra vehicles—scientists are warning of a potential uptick in fatal car crashes.

Their prediction is rooted in data from the last total solar eclipse that was visible from North America, which took place on August 21, 2017 . On the day of that eclipse, along with the day before and the day after, scientists found a 31 percent increase in the number of fatal crashes per hour compared to non-eclipse periods, they report Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine .

That’s one extra crash fatality every 95 minutes, for a total of 46 extra deaths linked to the 2017 eclipse. The increase is similar to what happens over busy holiday travel weekends, like Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July.

The surge in crashes likely has nothing to do with the conditions of the eclipse itself—drivers aren’t getting into accidents because of the sudden dimming of the sun.

Rather, the higher traffic risk is likely due to “increased traffic, travel on unfamiliar routes, speeding to arrive on time, driver distraction by a celestial event, drug or alcohol impairment from related celebrations or eclipse viewing from unsafe roadside locations,” says study co-author Donald Redelmeier , a physician and scientist at the University of Toronto and the Sunnybrook Research Institute, in a statement .

That theory is backed by the fact that the number of fatal crashes decreased during the hour when the eclipse was happening in 2017, reports Live Science ’s Nicoletta Lanese.

“One of the surprises that I didn’t anticipate was that the risks do not occur at the exact moment of totality,” Redelmeier tells CNN ’s Mira Cheng. “It’s not when everything is dark and black and chilly, but instead, they occur in the hours before and after.”

An estimated 20 million Americans traveled to see the 2017 eclipse, which had a 62- to 71-mile-wide path of totality , or the swath of Earth from which the moon appears to fully block the sun. Researchers were curious to know how all that travel affected fatal car crashes, so they dug into data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

More specifically, they looked at the number of accidents that occurred the day before, the day of and the day after the 2017 total solar eclipse, from August 20-22. For comparison, they also pulled the same statistics for a three-day period the week before the eclipse, as well as a three-day period the week after: August 13-15 and August 27-29.

Using a U.S. Navy calculator, they also studied the latitude and longitude of each crash to see what time it occurred in relation to the local eclipse maximum, or the point at which the moon appeared to complete block the sun’s light.

They found that 10.3 fatal crashes occurred per hour during the three-day eclipse period, compared to 7.9 crashes per hour during the comparison periods.

Drivers and passengers were most vulnerable after the eclipse, when the traffic risk rose to nearly 50 percent above average. The riskiest hour of the entire study period was between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. on the evening of the eclipse, reports the National Post ’s Sharon Kirkey.

“We’re especially concerned about the drive home,” Redelmeier tells Live Science .

The traffic risk was also higher in locations with clear skies, compared to those with overcast skies, the researchers found.

The study only looked at fatal crashes and did not consider other accidents with less severe outcomes. The scientists also could not distinguish between local drivers and tourists who were involved in accidents while traveling to see the rare celestial phenomenon.

This year, the path of totality is much wider than it was seven years ago. An estimated 31.6 million U.S. residents live within the path of totality for April’s eclipse, compared to 12 million in 2017. Still, the regions experiencing totality will receive a massive influx of tourists.

“Many first-time viewers will attend the 2024 eclipse because of what they heard from those who saw the eclipse in 2017,” wrote Jonathan Upchurch , a transportation engineering consultant and emeritus professor at Arizona State University, in the September-October 2018 issue of TR News, a publication of the Transportation Research Board. “The event also will have a high number of repeat participants.”

Whatever happens on April 8, the researchers recommend all drivers use extra caution and practice safe driving techniques, such as following the posted speed limits, wearing seat belts, signaling turns and limiting distractions.

“We all share the road, so just because you’re not paying attention to the eclipse, you have to pay attention to every other driver that surrounds you,” Redelmeier tells the National Post .

Eclipse viewers should also take precautions when they are watching the skyward spectacle itself. The primary risk is eclipse blindness, or solar retinopathy , which is caused by staring directly at the sun without eye protection. Anyone who wants to look up at the sun as the moon passes in front of it should invest in a pair of eclipse glasses. Cameras also need special solar filters for viewing or photographing the eclipse.

Don’t look directly at the partially eclipsed sun without the proper protection, says Hin Cheung , an optometrist at Indiana University, in a statement . “Photochemical damage is cumulative,” he adds. “Staring at the sun for short periods at a time does not protect you; the damage from each viewing adds up. This may cause temporary or even permanent changes to your central vision.”

If James sits out Tuesday, it will be the 10th game he has missed this season. The Lakers are 5-4 in games without the four-time league MVP this season, including a 123-122 home win over the Bucks on March 8 .

D’Angelo Russell, who didn’t play in Sunday’s 150-145 home win against the Indiana Pacers because of a non-COVID illness, wasn’t listed on the injury report for Tuesday and is expected to be available.

James, 39, played 38 minutes in the victory over the Pacers, finishing with 26 points (8-for-19 shooting), 10 assists and five rebounds.

“It’s a day-to-day process,” James said of his ankle after Friday’s home win against the Philadelphia 76ers . “Every day I’m working on it, working at it, continue to make that priority No. 1 going down the stretch of the season.”

The Lakers are entering this trip as the ninth-place team in the Western Conference standings with a 39-32 record, the first time they’ve been at least seven games over .500 since the end of the 2020-21 season. They have 11 games left in the regular season.

“We know where we are right now,” James said. “Just continue trying to play some good basketball. That’s a very testy road trip for us.

“It’s very rare, I can’t remember in my career where I’ve had such a late East Coast road trip or vice versa when I was in the East to go to the West so late in the season, so that’s challenging. But we’re looking forward to it.”

The Lakers enter the trip, which continues on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies, winners of 15 of their past 22 games, including their last three.

Their recent success has kept them from falling below No. 10 in the standings, with the 10th-seeded Golden State Warriors and 11th-seeded Houston Rockets entering Monday’s schedule 2½ and 3½ games behind the Lakers, respectively.

But the Lakers also haven’t been able to make a jump in the standings either, staying 2½ games behind the Sacramento Kings and Dallas Mavericks, who entered Monday tied and occupying the seventh and eighth seeds.

“A little,” Anthony Davis responded when asked how much he watches the standings. “I mean, it’s everywhere right now. But for us, just try to control what we can control and that’s winning one game at a time.

“Obviously we try to figure out how far we are behind the sixth seed, but you stress yourself out putting too much pressure on yourself when you are constantly looking at it. But we’re ninth right now, so we just got to continue to play our style of basketball and focus on us and taking it one game at a time and worrying about winning that game. And if we continuously do that, then the rest will take care of itself.”

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Davis on Monday was named the Western Conference Player of the Week for games played from March 18-Sunday.

It was the first time Davis received the award this season and the 10th weekly honor of his career.

Davis led the Lakers to a 3-0 record in last week’s games, averaging 27 points (68.6% shooting%) 16.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, two blocked shots and 1.3 steals.

Help! Air Canada Ruined Our Trip to Ireland but Won’t Take the Blame.

A Minnesota couple’s vacation fell apart after a jet bridge accident and a code-share snafu led to two nights of failed connections.

Last September, my husband and I left our kids with their grandparents and set off to Ireland. Our $2,132 itinerary took us from Minneapolis to Toronto to Dublin on tickets booked on United Airlines through Expedia but ultimately operated by Air Canada, a United partner. We had boarded our connecting flight in Toronto (and I was already dozing in my seat) when the captain announced an operator had crashed the jet bridge into the starboard engine. We were given hotel vouchers and told we would be rebooked for the next day. Checkout time came and went without a word, so we went to the airport and were told to call Air Canada customer service. An agent booked us a flight for that evening, and we printed out boarding passes at an airport kiosk. But when we tried to board, we were told the boarding passes were invalid. Eventually, we were offered two options for the next day: Fly to Dublin via Newark, or return to Minneapolis. We cut our losses and went home after staying the night in Toronto at a hotel. But United refunded us only $1,087, barely half of what we paid. Air Canada did reimburse us for the second hotel and other expenses, but we believe the airlines owe us not only a full refund, but also 400 Canadian each ($295 apiece) under Canadian law for denied boarding. Both refused. Can you help? Michelle, Edina, Minn.

Dear Michelle,

I found the 58-page dossier you sent along with your story to be quite convincing. (It also convinced me that either you or your husband is a lawyer, which turns out to be true.)

I skipped over Expedia, since your trip had already started, and reached out to United and Air Canada — as you flew on an airline’s partner, it’s a code share arrangement. A spokeswoman for United, Erin Jankowski, quickly sent me a statement noting that the refund you received from United was as per Air Canada’s instructions and referred all other questions to it.

Air Canada, on the other hand, took almost two weeks to get back to me, and its response was underwhelming.

“Our records indicate these customers were not denied boarding in Toronto,” wrote Peter Fitzpatrick, a spokesman for the airline. “Instead, it appears that following the cancellation of their original flight to Ireland they opted to return to Minneapolis from Toronto rather than go to Dublin following the delay. Once that was identified, we did rebook the customers on a flight back to Minneapolis.”

No compensation, no word on the $1,045 still missing from your refund and no explanation as to how you were turned away at the gate for your second flight and yet “not denied boarding.”

Air Canada did offer you and your husband a credit worth 1,200 Canadian dollars toward a future flight, Mr. Fitzpatrick wrote to me, “to account for the impact on their travel plans and experience.”

There was no response to my direct question asking why your boarding passes did not work the second night. In fact, it isn’t even clear from Mr. Fitzpatrick’s initial statement that Air Canada believed you even tried to board, despite the boarding passes you included in the dossier sent to me and the two airlines.

I wrote back with more pointed questions, thanks to what I learned after reading up on the Canadian Transportation Agency’s air passenger protection regulations and speaking with Tom Oommen, the director general of the C.T.A.’s Analysis and Outreach Branch.

“We have what I would call a very complete holistic system of consumer protection for airlines,” he said. For example, when flight disruptions occur for reasons within an airline’s control and the airline cannot get passengers onto another of its own flights within nine hours, it must book the passenger on any airline, including competitors it does not have agreements with, a requirement that the United States does not impose.

Mr. Oommen also noted that if a passenger is stuck midway through a trip and is not happy with the options to continue on, the airline must offer to rebook that passenger “on a flight back to their point of origin free of charge and refund their entire ticket.”

He wouldn’t specifically comment on your case, but that is exactly what happened to you. (The only exception to these rules is when the disruption is not within the airline’s control, Mr. Oommen said, but when a mechanical problem is caused by an airline employee or contractor, “it’s hard to make that argument.”)

There are also many circumstances in which Canada requires airlines to compensate passengers — between 400 and 2,400 dollars — for flight delays, cancellations and denied boarding within the airline’s control. There is an exception for when such issues have safety implications, which could apply to the first night’s engine damage, but not, it seems to me, for the second night’s nonfunctioning boarding passes. That sounds a lot like denied boarding.

This time, you heard back before I did, and forwarded me several emails from Air Canada, including one that said the carrier had approved a cash payment of 400 dollars per traveler. Then Mr. Fitzpatrick emailed me to say you would receive a full refund.

So you got what you asked for, but of course you would rather have gone to Ireland. And what happened, exactly, when Air Canada refused to board you in Toronto? Mr. Fitzpatrick told me United had canceled your ticket before you even got to the gate.

I found that confusing — the boarding pass bears an Air Canada ticket number, and you had not even spoken to United that day. So I got back in touch with United’s Ms. Jankowski, who looked into the situation further and found that “United canceled the tickets after sending messages to the operating carrier, Air Canada, informing them that the tickets had not been properly reissued to the rescheduled flight.”

Apparently, somewhere in the interfacing bowels of the two carriers’ systems, your Air Canada boarding pass was invalidated by United, and neither airline contacted you. And that’s too bad, because Mr. Fitzpatrick later confirmed that second flight left with empty seats.

When you decided to just go home, the Air Canada representative at the airport said you had to call United. The process to untangle the mess and get you booked on a flight back to Minneapolis required hours and six different United customer service representatives and supervisors.

Your experience is a good reason for all of us to avoid code shares unless they are necessary — such as when an itinerary includes flights operated by different airlines.

All this because you originally booked Air Canada flights as United code shares — a choice you found on Expedia. When I recently ran a Minneapolis-to-Dublin search on Expedia for a week in April, the first two choices that appeared were the same route via Toronto with no price difference, one booked directly on Air Canada and the other as a code share on United. Assuming you saw the same thing last year, I bet that if you had booked the Air Canada choice, you would have made it to Ireland, albeit a day late. All the more reason to book directly, with one airline.

There is one final mystery: Why wouldn’t Air Canada admit this was a case of denied boarding, and follow the required C.T.A. regulations? Yes, your case doesn’t precisely fit the agency’s official definition , which is written to describe overbooking or changes in aircraft, but if an airline erroneously cancels a passenger’s ticket after it has already printed a boarding pass, and you are stopped at the gate, what is that?

I presented this as a theoretical situation to the Mr. Oommen of the C.T.A.

“Classic denied boarding is what you’re describing,” he said.

That means you could file for an additional 400 dollars each for this second incident, and put that toward a new flight to Ireland — say, on Aer Lingus, direct or through Chicago.

When a military installation or Government - related facility(whether or not specifically named) is located partially within more than one city or county boundary, the applicable per diem rate for the entire installation or facility is the higher of the rates which apply to the cities and / or counties, even though part(s) of such activities may be located outside the defined per diem locality.
