Such participants, however, should be aware that the Americans with Disabilities Act is inapplicable outside of the United States and facilities outside the United States for disabled individuals are limited. It is strongly recommended that persons requiring assistance be accompanied by a companion who is capable of and totally responsible for providing the assistance. Neither Collette nor its personnel, nor its suppliers, may physically lift or assist clients into transportation vehicles. If a traveler thinks he or she might need assistance during a trip, he or she should call Collette to determine what assistance might reasonably be given. Museum visits and personal shopping time may be disrupted due to unforeseen circumstances or many religious, state and local holidays observed throughout the world.

Motorcoach Washrooms

Most motorcoaches used on our tours are equipped with washrooms except safari vehicles, exotic locations, and some of our Explorations tours. These are typically for emergency use, as we make plenty of comfort stops, allowing you the opportunity to use public restrooms and/or stretch your legs.

Seat Rotation

Seats are rotated onboard the coach for all Collette tours under the direction of the tour manager. So that we do not show partiality among passengers, exceptions cannot be made.

Maps and Photos

Maps shown on tour pages are current at the time of printing and may not reflect actual tour routing should the tour change. Photos shown on tour pages are reflective of the area(s) visited, but may not be included in the actual tour itinerary and the conditions you experience may be different than depicted in the photograph(s).

It is recommended for your own self-interest and protection that you have adequate insurance to cover these eventualities. There are limitations by coach and air carrier as to the number and size of bags which can be carried onboard and in bulk storage. Be sure to ask your travel professional about such restrictions before departing for your tour.

Checked Baggage Charges: Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check any baggage. Please contact your airline or refer to its website for detailed information regarding your airline’s checked baggage policies. Please be advised baggage fees may apply on most trans-border flights. This is a fee levied by the airlines, not Collette, and may be subject to change.

This air ticket may be covered by Collette’s Travel Protection Plan under Part B if you cancel your trip for covered reasons (see Part B for more details).

The Part A Waiver portion of Collette’s Travel Protection Plan protects you from penalties in the event you have a need to cancel your entire inclusive tour package up to the day prior to departure. The Part A Waiver portion of the Travel Protection Plan does not indemnify you from penalties if you choose to cancel partial tour components or air. If you choose to partially cancel your tour, you will be responsible for a revision fee as well as any penalties that are incurred at the time of the cancellation.

For Residents of MN, MO, NY and WA Only: The Pre-Departure Cancellation Fee Waiver (Part A) can be purchased separately without the purchase of the Travel Protection Plan. Contact Collette at 1-800-832-4656 in order to purchase the Pre-Departure Cancellation Fee Waiver separately.

Collette’s Part A Waiver portion of the Travel Protection Plan does not reimburse any single supplement charges which arise from an individual’s traveling companion electing to cancel for any reason prior to departure. In this case, the single supplement will be deducted from the refund of the person who cancels. (However, the Part B Benefits referenced below include a single supplement benefit for certain covered reasons, as detailed in Part B.) Division of this charge between the two passengers involved is solely their responsibility. If insufficient funds are deducted from the canceling client, the traveling client will be charged the remaining portion of the single supplement.

Your Payment for the Travel Protection Plan (if chosen) must be received by Collette with your deposit. The fee is nonrefundable, nontransferable and valid for each applicant only.

Collette can assume no responsibility for and cannot be held liable for any wrongful, negligent or unauthorized acts or omissions of any travel agent or travel agency other than that of Collette Travel Service, Inc. itself, and its own employees.

Where to Present Part A Claims

To request a refund under the Part A Pre-Departure Cancellation Fee Waiver portion of the Travel Protection Plan, please call Collette and send any unused airline tickets to:

Collette ATTN: Customer Service Department 162 Middle Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860

If cancellation occurs prior to departure, contact the Collette Reservations Department. When a client cancels prior to departure, any refunds are processed through the booking agent.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Canada. You do not require a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact an embassy or consulate of Canada to determine what travel documentation will be required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries , you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here . Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

Anyone with a criminal record (including some misdemeanors such as Driving While Impaired (DWI) charges) may be excluded or removed from Canada, and should contact a Canadian embassy or consulate well in advance of any planned travel to ensure proper travel documentation.

We strongly recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPDOM .

These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may not be accessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally,  no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Canada. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally , please contact a Canadian embassy or consulate to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for you to visit.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

The Canada's Capital Cities plus Niagara Falls journey is moderately-paced for the enjoyment of all. To enjoy this tour you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it. Smoking is not permitted on the motor coaches. Local legislation in Canada varies greatly with respect to smoking. The provinces of Québec and Ontario have banned smoking in all public places. Smoking rooms may still be requested at hotels.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in this part of Eastern Canada is similar to that of New England. From late May through early October, average high temperatures range from 60 to 80˚F (16 to 27˚C); average low temperatures range from 40 to 60˚F (4 to 16˚C). Rainfall is spread evenly throughout the year at a moderate 3 in (76 mm) per month.

What To Pack

When joining a Tauck journey, every guest is responsible for their own health and, in turn, the protection of their fellow travelers, the Tauck staff, our suppliers and the places we visit. As such, you are expected to follow local and supplier guidelines regarding face coverings, as explained by your Tauck Director. Our partners may have a limited supply of face coverings, gloves, and hand sanitizer, so please bring such personal items for your own comfort.

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing. For the welcome and farewell receptions, casual resort wear is appropriate; formal wear is never required.

The hotels offer valet laundry service for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to Eastern Canada:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Battery-operated travel alarm clock
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in rooms)

  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Canada’s first rail tunnel, the Brockville Railway Tunnel was opened on December 31st, 1860, and remained in operation for over 100 years, till 1970.

Known primarily for its history and architecture, it has since been converted into a seasonal attraction to appeal to a broader range of tourists.

In 18 months in 2016 and 2017, Brockville Railway Tunnel was turned into a work of art with bright, colourful LED’s and powerful sound systems. The lights and music synchronise to make vibrant patterns and create a truly atmospheric, immersive display for you to walk through and enjoy.

This itinerary surprised me. I had been to Toronto before and had enjoyed the falls, the food and the hockey however the surprise to me were the other cities. Ottawa had lots to offer as it was the capital / head of the parliament and the architecture was stunning along with the Fairmont Hotels which become a feature of this itinerary throughout, especially the famous Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City. What I enjoyed the most were the French influences in Quebec City and Montreal, at times much more European than Canadian. The food throughout was superb with many choices so make sure you enjoy the fresh Canadian air and walk lots! thanks Luxury Gold - next stop Japan.

Historic Cities of Eastern Canada Tour

Historic Cities of Eastern Canada

This was the first time I’d been on a holiday to North America and also the first time I’d been on an escorted holiday. The group size was around 30 people (mainly couples), in total there were four single travellers on the holiday, most people on the holiday would have been over 50 years old. This holiday isn’t suitable for someone who can’t stand heights or who doesn’t like boat trips as two boat trips are included and lunch up the CN Tower is included, while some of the hotels in Canada are very tall and don’t have that many rooms per floor – I was on the 30th floor of the hotel in Toronto. The first day we got an oldish, not very luxurious coach but the tour director did say the coach and driver would just be for that day and for the rest of the trip we would have a different coach, which was a newish Globus branded coach which had better seating and more leg room than the coach we had on the first day. Apparently the different coach and driver on the first day was down to working hours for the main driver so I imagine it happens every time. In Ottawa the tour director promised us something that wasn’t advertised. It turned out this was the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Museum. I found this disappointing as it wasn’t very interesting and an included tour of the Parliament building or the Royal Mint would have been of far more interest to me. Local guides provided tours in Quebec City and Montreal. I think the one of Quebec City worked well but the one of Montreal was 2 hours, mainly on the coach (after already having spent most of the morning on the coach) alighting only to go inside a Cathedral and at a photo opportunity from a vantage point so I would have preferred a bit more walking around Montreal. For included meals be aware that you won’t have the full restaurant menu to order from but a special menu which doesn’t have as many options, in some cases there was only one available option for starter or dessert. If you book this tour and it’s possible I’d recommend arriving on Thursday and departing on Sunday as both Toronto and Montreal are huge cities and the tour only gives you limited time in both cities. For me it wasn’t possible to stay an extra night in Montreal and I don’t feel there wasn’t enough time to see the city.

Eastern Journey Tour

Eastern Journey

Our trip was in Eastern Canada the first of July 2023. It was a nightmare to figure out how to get to our hotel from the train and subways, up and down soooo many stairs then walking the rest of the way with our luggage mind you. Definitely call for a ride to the hotel. Our first hotel was nice in Toronto. Niagara Falls was fun and definitely something to experience. The tour buses on our whole trip were comfortable and we had great drivers, especially Mike. He was so personable and took really good care of us! The second hotel in Ottawa was good too but when we went to Quebec City that was the worst hotel I’ve ever been in! The beds were uncomfortable, the air conditioner didn’t work well at all, and the shower was messed up and only ran hot water. Then the water wouldn’t shut off so we had to call someone to shut it off with tools. The tub didn’t have anything on the bottom for you to not slip so I slipped getting in and tore the towel rack down which was just glued on. I ended up having to place a towel in the shower where we could take a shower and not fall down. The people that worked there were rude. The carpet in the hallways was disgusting and coming up which is a major trip hazard. One couple that was on the tour with us showed me a piece of metal that fell from his ceiling in his room and hit him in the head. We had to stay two miserable nights there! Our next hotel in Montreal was okay and the last hotel they put us in back in Toronto was a very nice hotel and had a wonderful breakfast. Our guide was nice and informative too. We enjoyed seeing everything we did either while in the bus or walking around the cities. I’m not sure if I will do another group tour or not. Guess we’ll see….

It was a fantastic tour !!. Our guide Larry and driver Markus were amazing. We were in Canada for Canada day- saw the fireworks by Niagara falls and were in Washington for 4th of July fireworks. It could not have been better!!! Loved the stay and the experience. Will definitely travel with them again. P.S- We also went to the Amish village in Pennsylvania with was not part of the itinerary.

What people love about Quebec City Tours

I LOVED this tour. This was my first time as a solo traveller. The tour guide and the driver were both excellent. The experiences were incredible. Trying to arrange the amount of cities, and experiences solo, with hotels, travel etc is not possible for anywhere near the amount paid. Value for money is excellent. Hotels overall were good. There were some that were a little out of the cities, however the tour guide and driver did their best to accommodate by driving everyone back into the city if they wanted to go. Most of the experiences were really good. The Montmorency Falls as an extra trip with meal was a little pricey. There was not enough time at the Falls and the best view would be down the bottom. This could have been a free trip, without the meal, I would suggest this is looked at. Also in Montreal the tour guide who took us round, was not very engaging and it was difficult to hear her. Everything else was spot on. Well organised, excellent value for money, lovely people, beautiful country, wide range of experiences. LOVED IT. Will definitely be doing another tour.

Easy Canada Road Trip: From Niagara Falls to Quebec in 6 Days

Seeing Niagara Falls with Toronto cityscape in the background is one sight on an easy Canada road trip

Discover the best things to do and see on a Canada road trip from Niagara Falls to Quebec City.

If you love road trips and traveling abroad, but are too scared to drive around other countries (have you seen how they drive in Rome?!) going on a Canada road trip is ideal. When you cross the border, you’ll barely notice a difference – the highways and streets look pretty similar to the U.S. and the signage is easy to understand – but you’ll get to see another country, experience French-Canadian culture and take in some of Canada’s most gorgeous sights.

What You Need for a Canada Road Trip

Driving through Canada is super easy and a great way to experience another country with zero stress, especially if you go in summer and don’t have to worry about snow and icy roads.

Here are some essentials to make sure you pack for the trip:

  • Passports, even for kids
  • Warm layers for when it gets chilly, even in the summer
  • Comfy walking shoes because you can park the car and just walk at these stops
  • Swimsuit (for visiting a Lake Ontario beach)
  • Umbrella or poncho in case it rains
  • Snacks for the car ride
  • Language translation app for speaking French in Quebec (optional)
  • Itinerary of where to go and what to see

Road Trip Starting Points

Our starting point was from our home in the Detroit metro area. This road trip is perfect for those who live within a few hours of the Canadian border like us, such as northern areas of New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio.

But you can also fly into Toronto or Quebec and pick up this road trip route from there. Note: It takes about two hours to drive from Toronto to Niagara Falls.

Stop #1: Niagara Falls

Like the most massive white noise machine ever, you’ll hear the constant roar of Niagara Falls long before you see it. Prepare for some “goshwows” when you see this natural wonder that straddles the U.S.-Canada border. It’s actually three mighty waterfalls that dump 6 million cubic feet of water per minute into the gorge below, making Niagara Falls the most powerful waterfall on the North American continent.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Niagara Falls Canada (@niagarafallstourismcanada)

Here are the different ways you can experience the falls:

  • Go over the edge , on a glass overhang on the U.S. side of the falls at Niagara Falls State Park
  • Face the waterfall head-on , the classic “Maid of the Mist” boat ride takes you as close as possible
  • Walk near whitewater rapids , on the boardwalk along the thunderous Niagara River (called the White Water Walk ).
  • Fly over the waterfalls, on a zipline or in an aerial car
  • Go behind the falls, on a tunnel tour

Once you’ve had your fill of the falls, there are a lot of cheesy fun activities to do on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. The area known as Clifton Hill has everything from wax museums to go-karts to a butterfly exhibit. But don’t miss checking out Niagara Falls at night when lights turn the waterfall into a liquid rainbow.

Niagara-on-the-Lake

You can’t go all the way to Niagara Falls and not visit what’s often referred to as “Canada’s prettiest town.” Head north on Niagara Parkway along the river and past wineries for just 12 miles until you get to Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL), a postcard-perfect, waterside village perched where the Niagara River and Lake Ontario meet.

Most people come here to walk the 19 th -century streets and pop into shops for lavender scones, or to take in a play during the seven-month-long Shaw Festival (highlighting playwright George Bernard Shaw). The secret they’re missing out on? Going to the castle-like Konzelmann Estate Winery for a junk food wine pairing .

You get to sample sweet, salty, sour and chocolatey bites with complimentary wine. Or, you can opt to taste their selection of ice wines and soak up the stunning views of Lake Ontario and the Toronto skyline from Niagara’s only waterfront winery.

Stop #2: Picton, Lake Ontario

A Victorian town in the winery-studded countryside, Picton is full of beautiful old homes, B&Bs, little shops and eateries, and a gorgeous, Lake Ontario beach. It’s on the way to Quebec and the perfect place to stayover and break up the drive.

If the weather is warm, definitely head to Sandbanks Provincial Park . There you’ll find clear water, pristine beaches and sand dunes. It’s a super popular spot in the summer! If temps are chilly, you can see what’s playing at Regent Theatre (an old-timey theater that plays new releases) or pop into quirky stores like Frugal & Company for retro finds and The Local Store for goods made by local artists.

But definitely don’t miss stopping by Kinsip H o use of Fine Spirits for a taste of their outstanding pine gin, maple whiskey and whiskey barrel-aged maple syrup (imagine this on a stack of fluffy pancakes!). Their small-batch spirits are distilled on the historic farm (complete with silky chickens running around everywhere), which you can tour if you like. Or just kick back on the patio with a gin fizz or other drink from the cocktail bar and some BBQ from the food truck.

Stop #3: Quebec City

With its French culture and 17th-century cobblestone streets, Quebec has enough European charm and café au laits to make you feel like you’ve gone much further abroad. But don’t worry, everyone in the tourist areas speaks English (although you’ll be greeted in French).

Quebec covers the top and side of a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River, so walking around the upper old town area – still surrounded by 400-year-old walls – is incredibly scenic. Take your time walking along Rue St. Jean, a street lined with souvenir shops and cafes, where you’ll probably stumble upon a street performer or two – we watched a mime and then a guy who juggled fiery torches. For the best view, head up the hill to Dufferin Terrace, a boardwalk in front of the stunning Chateau Frontenac Hotel. From there, you can ride the funicular (a glass cable car) down the hill or take the stairs to reach the lower old town area along the riverfront.

Exploring lower Old Town was our favorite experience in Quebec. Here flowers cover every window sill, street vendors make maple syrup taffy and there’s a cute little square with a church dating back to the 1600’s.

The shops are better in this area, too. Definitely pop into these three boutiques:

  • Animoc , for buttery soft leather moccasins and boots (35 1/2 rue du Petit-Champlain)
  • Boutique Red Canoe , for jackets, hats and gear from the Royal Canadian Air Force (88 rue du Petit-Champlain)
  • Boutique Metiers d’Art du Quebec, for handmade jewelry and decor by local artists (29 Notre-Dame Street)

Free summer fun in Quebec

There are a lot of fun things you can do in Quebec for free in the summer. For example:

Festival d’été de Québec

We timed our visit with Festival d’été de Québec (FEQ) , which is Canada’s biggest music festival. It includes 250 performances over the span of 11 days in July. There are five stages (two are free!) and an eclectic lineup – from Imagine Dragons to little-known ska bands to Mariah Carey when we went. Concerts run from 6-11 p.m. so if you’re out walking at night, you’ll hear bands playing all over Quebec.

During FEQ, there’s a festival-like atmosphere around the DeTourney Fountain and along Grande Allee (the main boulevard) with food trucks, free performances and booths where you can play games or get free food samples.

I highly recommend timing your road trip with this festival because it’s so much fun. Passes are an incredible deal – about $80 U.S. and that includes access to ALL OF THE PERFORMANCES! – and while there were definitely lots of people roaming the streets and at the concerts, it wasn’t as crowded as you might imagine (perhaps because it’s spread out over so many days?).

Acrobatic Performance

During the summer, you can catch a free circus show in downtown Quebec. The FLIP Fabrique Acrobats put on an hour-long acrobatic-stunt show (think: a lite version of Cirque du Soleil) nearly every night of the week. Check the link above to see the exact location, dates and times.

Six different nights during the summer, you can catch a free fireworks show over the river. The Grand Feux Loto-Quebec blasts fireworks from a platform in the middle of the river. Nab a front-row seat along the riverfront at Port de Quebec or up on the hill in front of Chateau Frontenac Hotel.

Changing of the guard

La Citadelle ( The Citadel ) is an old fort dating back to 1820, when the English built it to ward off the Americans. But the cool thing about it is that it still houses a working regiment there (the only French speaking unit in the Canadian Forces’ infantry).

In addition to touring the fort and the attached museum, you can also catch the changing of the guards at 10 a.m. on summer days. Besides the pomp and circumstance, there’s a goat involved! If you miss the ceremony, you can still go to see the very serious guard stationed in front of the garrison.

Stop #4: Toronto

Toronto is a mega-city. It’s big, sprawling and completely overwhelming. The best plan? Pick one or two neighborhoods to explore. For our trip, we chose to check out the hippie village of Kensington Market as well as Chinatown. The two neighborhoods are close together and both looked fun.

Kensington Market neighborhood

The Kensington Market neighborhood is jam-packed with ethnic eateries and vintage clothing shops. If I hadn’t been with my kids and husband, I could have spent HOURS on Kensington Avenue sifting through all the one-of-a-kind finds (my favorite store was Courage My Love ) and eating so many exotic snacks! But alas, my family wanted to eat in Chinatown.

Chinatown neighborhood

We wandered the busy streets of Chinatown trying to figure out which of the numerous Chinese restaurants would be best. It was a tough call, but we ended up at a tiny eatery where we could see the chef pulling dumplings out of a huge, steaming pot near the front window. I forgot to write down the name of the place (bad travel writer, bad!) but to be honest I wasn’t thrilled with the food, although it came out like 60 seconds after we ordered it. If I got a do-over, I’d pick one of the restaurants in this guide on how to spend a day in Kensington Market and Chinatown .

Toronto tourist spots

We also ended up walking over to the CN Tower, which every other blog post will tell you to visit in Toronto. Why? I’m not sure unless you like doing fear-of-heights stuff like going up 114 stories and then walking around on a glass platform or hanging off the edge of the building while wearing safety ropes. But, no thanks for me!

Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada is right next to the tower and might be worth doing if you want to entertain kids, but it was too pricy for us given the time we had left in the day.

If you do this road trip between October and June, it would be fun to go to a Maple Leafs hockey game at downtown’s Scotiabank Arena. Hockey is a way of life in Canada!
