Big Laughs on tour

Comedian kevin hart brings 'reality check' to dallas on upcoming arena tour.

Kevin Hart

Comedian Kevin Hart's first major tour in over four years, "The Reality Check Tour," will make a stop in Dallas at American Airlines Center on Friday, August 12.

Produced by Live Nation, Hart's tour begins on July 2 and 3 with a two-night stay in Las Vegas, after which he will perform in over 30 arenas across North America, including dates in three other Texas cities — Houston on August 5, Austin on August 7, and San Antonio on August 13.

Hart's last visit to the state was in 2018, when he had stops in the four same cities in late October/early November.

“I am [hyped] as shit to go back out on tour," Hart said in a February 14 statement. "There is nothing better than making people laugh, I can feel the energy in the venues like caffeine pumping through my veins. I’ve been cooking up something special and have thoughts I need to get off my chest. Go get your tickets and come ready to have a good night!”

Hart is known to be one of the few comedians who can consistently fill up arenas. His most recent global comedy tour sold out over 100 arenas and sold over one million tickets worldwide. He also had a hometown stand-up performance at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, marking the first time a comedian sold out an NFL stadium in Philadelphia.

Tickets for the tour go on sale 10 am Friday, February 18 at KevinHartNation.com . Fans will also have access to a special Live Nation presale beginning 10 am Wednesday, February 16 through 10 pm Thursday, February 17.

Beloved Luby’s restaurant pushed out of Plano location after 30 years

Cajun seafood spot shutters location in dallas’ preston hollow village, award-winning starship bagel to open shop in north dallas center, movie review, journalism takes center stage in harrowing and disorienting 'civil war'.

For anybody born in the 20th century or later in the United States, the idea of a civil war was always one that existed either in the history books or in countries in other parts of the world. But the divisive politics that have taken hold of the country in recent years have made the concept, if not inevitable, then at least less abstract.

Writer/director Alex Garland has given voice to many people’s worst fears with his new film, Civil War . Set in an undetermined point in the near future, the film follows four journalists – photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst), reporter Joel (Wagner Moura), budding photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), and veteran reporter Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) – as they travel around various war-torn sections on the East Coast of the U.S.

Lee and Joel are trying to get to Washington, D.C. ahead of the so-called Western Forces – the break-off group comprised of a variety of aligned states – to try to get an interview with the President (Nick Offerman) before he’s inevitably deposed. Jessie and Sammy have come along for the ride for reasons of their own, knowing that the group’s journey will be far from smooth sailing.

The way the film is staged by Garland, people from both sides of the aisle will likely find something to agree with in the film. He throws the audience into the middle of the story with no explanation as to how the war started, exactly who is fighting whom, or anything else that would orient the viewer. In a way, trying to understand the details of the war and which states are aligned with which other states is almost beside the point, as the film is almost always seen from the viewpoint of the journalists, not those fighting it.

However, at times he seems to be actively trying to disorient the audience, as well. What little is learned about the war comes from news reports and seemingly throwaway lines, like the fact that Texas and California are part of the breakaway Western Forces. In the real world, such an alliance makes little political or geographical sense; the film never goes into the logistics of the warring parties, so it’s up to individual viewers on how deeply they want to analyze things.

The film contains a variety of harrowing battle scenes, with the journalists doing their best to record everything happening for their outlets and the history books. Garland does a great job at putting viewers in the shoes of the four leads as they have varying degrees of reaction to the carnage. The one thing that seems to be paramount is the importance of continuing to do their jobs no matter what, even when the war impacts them personally.

Although you could clearly read the film as a warning about what could happen if the United States continues along the divided path it seems to be on, it ultimately feels like one that’s stressing the importance of a free press more than anything else. At multiple points, the characters use their position as members of the press to get access to areas no one else could, and the photos taken by Lee and Jessie are occasionally isolated so as to show their value to the world at large.

Dunst has always been a good actor, but she seems to have reached a new level in recent years, and she’s at her best in this film, lending her character a gravitas that makes her the unquestioned leader. Spaeny follows up her great performance in Priscilla with another compelling arc of an innocent who becomes hardened. Moura and Henderson make for solid supporting actors, and Jesse Plemons shows up for a very memorable cameo.

There will be lots of think pieces about what Garland is saying about the state of America and whether Civil War is ultimately more of a liberal or conservative text. But from a purely filmmaking perspective, it’s a gripping story with bold action sequences, a definite step up from a director who’s already made a handful of intriguing films.

Civil War opens in theaters on April 12.

Later in 2022 Hart can be seen in Sony’s action-comedy, The Man from Toronto, starring alongside Woody Harrelson and Kaley Cuoco.

In 2020 Hart released his seventh hour long stand-up special, “Zero Fu**ks Given,” which quickly became Netflix's biggest stand-up special of 2020 and earned him a Grammy nomination for “Best Comedy Album”. Hart also starred in and produced “Die Hart,” the first production of its kind, created through his digital network, Laugh Out Loud, and Executive Produced through HartBeat Productions. In 2021 Kevin was nominated for an Emmy award for “Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series.”

In December 2019, Hart’s Emmy nominated Docu-series, “Don’t F**k This Up,” was released on Netflix. The intimate six-part series follows Hart’s life over the previous year, giving viewers an inside look to the events that shaped his life. Hart’s other recent box-office credits include Jumanji: The Next Level, The Secret Life of Pets 2, and The Upside. In 2018, Hart co-wrote, produced, and starred in Universal’s Night School, all under Hartbeat Productions. In 2017, Hart starred in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, his highest grossing movie to date. Hart’s previous credits include Central Intelligence, The Secret Life of Pets, and the Ride Along films.

Hart’s last global live standup comedy tour was “The Irresponsible Tour,” which was also released as an original Netflix standup special in April 2019. Additionally, his 2017 standup tour, “What Now,” grossed over $100 million worldwide and culminated in a performance to a sold-out crowd at Philadelphia’s NFL stadium.

Kevin is a New York Times Best Selling author twice over. His new book, Markus Makes a Movie debuted at number six on the coveted list and remained on the list for three weeks. Hart’s memoir, I Can’t Make This Up, debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Sellers List and remained on the Top 10 Nonfiction Hardcover Bestsellers List for ten weeks straight. Hart’s first Audible original, “The Decision,” was nominated for an Audie award for “Best Original Audiobook in 2021.”

In the audio space, Hart can be heard bi-weekly on his radio talk show, “Straight from the Hart,” which airs on Sirius XM’s Laugh Out Loud Radio (channel 96). In 2019, “Straight from The Hart” became available on Pandora and now ranks as the #1 podcast across all genres. Hart can also be heard on his weekly Sirius podcast, “Comedy Gold Minds.”

Kevin’s brand partnerships include Fabletics Men, Chase J.P Morgan, Hydrow, Brüush, Tommy John and Therabody.
