alice springs to adelaide tour

Departing from either Alice Springs or Yulara (Uluru Airport) we head towards Uluru (Ayers Rock) stopping off at Mt Connor (false Uluru) lookout for a view of this mighty red mountain and Curtin Springs for a toilet stop before arriving at our campground for lunch. After lunch, those arriving via Ayers Rock Airport will join the group before we head to the Red Centre’s Aboriginal interpretive cultural centre. We have a chance to learn about the cultural, ecological, historical and geological significance of this very special national park. With the anticipation and excitement growing we make a short drive towards the base of Uluru as we begin to comprehend the sheer size and magnificence of the giant monolith, getting up close and personal to explore further. Walking to Mutitjulu waterhole we discover sacred rock art sites in family caves and hear the creation stories of Kuniya and Liru as we continue our base walk towards Kuniya Piti. From here we drive around sacred sites towards Kantju Gorge where we envisage the highest waterfall in Central Australia, (truly a spectacle to behold, even more so when raining) an elders cave and the world’s oldest pantry. After exploring the world’s most impressive rock up close and personal, we retreat for panoramic views to witness one of the most incredible sunsets on the planet, all whilst having dinner cooked for you, to feed those hungry eyes and allow you to get to know your fellow travellers.

Meals: *Lunch, Dinner (*not included for guests being collected in Ayers Rock) Accom: Ayers Rock Coach Campground – Permanent Tents or Bush Swags (communal bathroom facilities) Driving Distance: 350km Hike Distance: 2-3 km / 2-3 hours

alice springs to adelaide tour

We wake early for a light breakfast and head off for a spectacular sunrise in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. You thought Uluru was special and just when you think it couldn’t get any more majestic we approach the stunning silhouette of Kata Tjuta. Here we set off on a hike through the Valley of the Winds or Walpa Gorge marvelling at the mighty conglomerate rock formations. After exploring Kata Tjuta we make our way towards Kings Canyon region just in time to experience a glorious outback sunset followed by a hearty meal around the campfire.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Accom: Kings Creek Station – Permanent Tents or Bush Swags (communal campground facilities) Driving Distance: 406 km (4.5 Hours) Hike Distance: 2-6 km / 2-4 hours (*weather dependent)

alice springs to adelaide tour

We head off early to explore the mighty Kings Canyon (Watarrka) venturing into the ancient landscape and sacred grounds of the Ulpanyali and Lilla people. Arriving at the jewel in the crown at the centre of Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) we find ourselves surrounded by towering 100-metre cliff faces, views of sandstone chasms and jaw-dropping backdrops that will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Grab your water, hat and sturdy shoes as we set off on foot to explore (the most seasonally applicable part of) the canyon in more detail. Rest up in the bus as we head back up north, passing through Alice Springs and heading out towards the West MacDonnell Ranges for an evening of stargazing at our bush camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accom: West MacDonnell Ranges – Permanent Tents or Bush Swags (private portable facilities) Driving Distance: 370km (4 hours) Hike Distance: 4-6 km / 3-4 hours

alice springs to adelaide tour

Known traditionally as Angkerle Atwatye, meaning “Gap of Water”, Standley Chasm is a 3-metre-wide, 80-metre-high gorge amongst the West MacDonnell Ranges. At dawn, we hope to spot the native wildlife as we enjoy breakfast and look forward to the day ahead. Tracking west you are welcome to enjoy a dip in Ellery Creek Bighole, known traditionally as Udepata, surrounded by tall red cliffs and sandy Ellery Creek. Onwards to where massive geological forces created the towering red walls of Ormiston Gorge. Spend time here admiring nature and its finest before we begin our leisurely journey back towards Alice Springs, with our final stop at another amazing feature of the Tjoritja West MacDonnell region, Simpsons Gap, where several dreaming trails and stories cross. Featuring a permanent waterhole this is also a great place to spot resident wildlife. Now we’ve had our fix of the best of central Australia’s natural icons, we deliver you back to Alice Springs to your chosen accommodation and evening plans as you reminisce your four days of exploration and new friends made.

  • Visit 'The Rock' in the Red Centre
  • Climb 'Heart Attack Hill' and explore Kings Canyon
  • Walk through The Valley of the Winds at Kata Tjuta

Day 1  We start our adventure travelling through the vineyards of the Clare Valley wine region, but soon enough we’re heading into the rugged Outback through the historic town of Melrose, gateway to the Flinders Ranges. We enjoy an easy stroll through the awesome Alligator Gorge, which is sometimes bursting with wild flowers. We’ll then settle in the heart of the Southern Flinders Ranges for the night.

Day 2 Along the way to Coober Pedy – the Opal Capital of the World – you’ll notice the incredible changing landscapes. Wildlife, such as kangaroos, emus and eagles will scatter as road trains thunder across a landscape that resembles Mars or the moon. On a tour of an underground mine and Opal Mine and Museum you’ll learn about the history of Coober Pedy. A highlight for some is visiting Josephine’s Kangaroo Orphanage, where you can meet the rescued kangaroos and baby joeys and admire (or buy) Aboriginal art and didgeridoos. Tonight, we sleep like the locals do – underground, in bunkhouse accommodation.

Day 3  It’s a big day driving up the Stuart Highway, with several pit stops en route. Our mission today is to reach the majestic Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) where we’ll camp for the night in an authentic station.

Day 4  We get up early to explore Watarrka (Kings Canyon), where you’ll need to stop to admire and photograph the massive sandstone walls, vast canyon floor and stunning gorges. On the Canyon Rim Walk (3-4 hours), you’ll experience the beautiful Garden of Eden and learn more about the local Aboriginal culture. After lunch, we begin our journey into Uluru. Nothing will prepare you for the sight of The Rock. We quickly set up camp before learning about the local Aboriginal History at the Uluru Kata Tjuta Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Soon after we’ll be experiencing our first awe-inspiring Uluru sunset, taking time to absorb the beauty and majesty of this place.

Day 5  We start the day at dawn taking a (3 ½ hour) walk around the base of Uluru. Hiking through acacia woodlands and grassy clay pans, you’ll spot wildlife at waterholes, marvel at The Rock’s geological wonders and learn more about Aboriginal interpretations from your Culturally Accredited Groovy Guide. Later, we relax back at our campground or join one of our Adrenalin Plus options.

Day 6  After devouring yet another scrumptious breakfast we’ll experience a glorious sunrise over Kata Tjuta, before we hike to lookouts around Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and visit the majestic Valley of the Winds with its ancient rock formations and extraordinary views. After lunch, we’ll hit the road to Alice Springs, arriving approximately at 6:30pm.

What sort of camping is done on this trip?

Swag camping! A swag is a kind of bag that you can sleep in. It has a mattress and pillow inside and you can roll it up for storage. It has a flap you can put over your head for total cover but most people choose to fall asleep staring at the night sky!

Do I need a sleeping bag?

You will definitely want a sleeping bag in winter as it can get quite cold at night, especially the further south you are and in the Red Centre, around Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon. In summer it is advisable as it can still be cool at night. We advise to bring along your own sleeping bag, otherwise you can hire one for $50 on the Darwin to Alice springs section and $30 on the Adelaide to Alice Springs section of the trip.

Will I be in the same group the whole trip?

No, this package is a combination of different tours put together and made into one convenient itinerary so that you get the best value trip and see as much as you can! This way you'll get to make as many friends as you can on your travels.

I've heard the flies are bad in summer. Is this true?

In the warmer months there can definitely be a lot of flies while travelling through the outback. It is advisable to bring a fly net in the warmer months.

What clothes do I need?

In summer the temperatures can be extremely hot when travelling through the outback. A shirt and shorts is all that is needed during these months though we recommend a light long sleeved top and light long pants (zip off) to minimise your exposure to the sun. It can still get cool at night and in the morning so you will want a jumper as well.

Definitely bring swimmers as there will be opportunities to swim at some locations. Sunglasses, as well as sunscreen SPF 30+ or better, are also a necessity no matter what time of year.

During winter the temperatures can be mild during the day but cold at night and in the morning when travelling through the centre of Australia. You will want a mixture of warm and cool clothes for this time of year. Long pants, a good jumper, a beanie, gloves and warm socks are recommended for use at night and in the morning. Further north near Darwin the temperature will not be so cold.

At all times of the year you will need a hat, preferably wide brimmed.

All year: Tuesday and Saturday

December - March: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

What to bring:

  • Sturdy walking shoes (ankle high)
  • Hat and sunscreen
  • Towel and toiletries
  • Warm clothing in winter
  • Water bottle
  • Torch/flashlight
  • Insect repellent
  • Travel pillow
  • Sleeping bag

*If you don't have a sleeping bag they are available for hire for $30

From our guests:

I wanted to thank you both for the trip over the last two weeks. It was quite a journey and I really appreciated your efforts to make it a special one for us all. As it was my first time in this unique part of our country I feel privileged to have experienced it with your guidance and expertise. Your passion for this part of the country, the landscape, the people, the flora and fauna is obvious and it was wonderful to be able to share it with you." - Helen VIC

"I have travelled on some splendid bush tours with John and Ros Thompson who personally run a small specialist touring company. It is highly professional and very friendly. The first trip was a memorable journey to the Corner Country, out where the borders of three States meet, where Burke and Wills died at the Dig Tree at Cooper Creek. Then, the Thompson’s took us on an exploration of the Flinders Ranges of South Australia, up to Lake Eyre, the Painted Desert and the Red Centre, visiting vast outback stations, the most ancient Nilpena fossil fields, Parachilna, Leigh Creek, Marree and Coober Pedy. What is great about a Nature Bound Tour is the Thompson's  superb knowledge of flora, fauna, water, history and the legends of the bush. The dialogue is highly educational and fascinating.”  - Everald AUS

  • Visit an isolated claypan beside which rust red rock clusters have been engraved with non-representational circles, lines and geometric motifs. They are thought to be up to 40,000 years old. Custodians say the meaning of the petroglyphs is sacred and too dangerous to reveal to non-initiated people.

Time too, to reflect on the variety of experiences enjoyed in your 15 day / 3,200 kms journey from Adelaide to Alice Springs

  • Ormiston Creek cuts through the 250m high gorge and is a tributary to the ancient Finke River still flowing its original course from 350 million years ago

  • One deep red cleft carving through the range over millions of years is named after the first non-Aboriginal woman to visit the site. So narrow and sheer the chasm is most dramatic when the sun penetrates into the cleft around mid-day

Explore Southern Africa

Best trip ever was, 2 things I didn't like the black mamba stop was wasting day and village ,so 2 night I think was just wasting, I could do 2 days in Kruger, and one more night in delta

Amazing Guatemala and beyond tour with Intrepid

Did Guatemala and beyond trip in November 22. It was amazing, we were so well looked after by our guide Aura. She was very knowledgeable and during our bus trips she gave us the history of the 4 countries. The border crossings can be tricky but handled very well by our guide. We saw all the most interesting and beautiful places. The hotels were lovely comfortable colonial style. I will travel with intrepid again

Central American Journey

Very enjoyable, good paced Tour. Tour Leader, Choko was helpful, knowledgeable and extremely informative.

Wonderful Croatian tour

Our tour guide,Tamara, was the highlight of our Explore Croatia tour. She was knowledgeable, organized, and so kind and fun. Croatia is a beautiful country. I loved the people, the scenery, the food, the history. I hope to go back one day. Intrepid was perfect for me. There was group time and there was plenty of free time. It wasn’t a luxury tour but all of our accommodations were clean and safe. The dinner in Hvar was SO special!

One Week In Costa Rica

The trip was amazing, everything was well planned out & there wasn't any issues. The tour guide was very friendly and made the experience fun. During the trip I didn't have to worry about safety as we were never put in harms way. I would definitely recommend & do again.

North Morocco Adventure

Touring the beautiful North of Morocco I learned far more than I’d anticipated in this 9 day tour. Interesting sights to see, with knowledgeable local guides, this tour provides a great balance of exposure to a different culture with ample time for relaxation. Chefchaouen is an absolute highlight, & not a place many Morocco trips of this kind go to. Loved it!

Essential Morocca

Essential Morocco was an absolute dream. Every single day had such informative walking tours and tours of local facilities. Whether it was dinner with a local family or visiting a pottery factory, I learned so much about Moroccan culture. The accommodations were safe and I felt secure the entire 11 days. This trip wouldn’t have been the same without one person. That person is Youssef. If you are coming to Morocco with Intrepid and you don’t request Youssef, you’re doing it wrong. Words cannot describe how incredible of a guide he is. There were 3 of us on our trip of 18-29 year olds and he made us all feel so welcome and safe all the time. Whether that is cracking jokes on long drives or giving us the itinerary for the next day, Youssef ensured we felt respected and seen.

Cambodia Adventure

Absolutely superb leader - knowledgeable. fun, safety conscious. Group of 15 travellers from 5 countries who bonded into a solid team. In addition to a fantastic itinerary, our leader’s love of karaoke made the trip unforgettable. It even inspired a song written as a tribute to him.

Who travels with us

Is this tour for me.

Our tours are made up of small groups with a range of ages, nationalities and backgrounds. Generally people who travel with us are between 20 and 45, though we also get alot passengers much older onboard - everyone is welcome! On tour we get equally as many males as females and everyone shares an enthusiasm for the out doors, nature, adventure and culture.

Our tours are for those wanting to really explore Australia and its many facets. Whether we are camping by a billabong in Kakadu National Park or sharing a cabin in Tasmania, our travellers want more than just a site seeing tour. They are chasing a hands on experience.

The trips are packed with many highlights and the pace can be fast - although there’s always time to chill out, have a cold beer ( or wine! ) and soak up your surroundings.

As always, if in doubt then contact us directly with your concerns.

What type of groups go on these tours?

Onboard our tours there are usually around 5 - 24 people ( depending on the tour and destination ). Lost In Australia's travellers want to explore the country and develop a real sense for the land, nature and its people. We travel in small groups which allows us to get from destination to destination quickly and effortlessly whilst being flexible and free!

Is it ok to travel alone on one of these tours?

We have many travellers jumping onboard our tours by themselves. Those travelling by themselves are very much welcomed and encouraged. During your outback adventure you'll meet new and interesting people and forge relationships that will last a life time.

Those who do travel by themselves will probably be sharing a room with a travelling companion of the same sex, but even if you do get your own room, you won't be charged extra. For camping tours, generally there are enough tents available that you can have your own if you choose to.

For more information please contact us directly.

How many people will be on tour?

Group sizes vary from tour to tour. You can find the size of your group by checking out information at the top right hand corner of the tour page. Group sizes range of 5 - 24 people.

Is there an age limit?

We get a large range of travellers from all over the world and from a very large age range. We get people of all ages joining these trips; generally our travellers vary between 21 - 45 though we also get many happy travellers in their 60s and 70s. Some tours however have a restriction on children under the age of 16 - 18. This will depend on the destination so please email us for more info.

Do I need to be able to swim?

Not really. The centre of Australia is quite dry and there is very few places where we are allowed to swim. However, for tours heading upwards towards Darwin there may be areas for swimming. If you aren't able to swim then you don't need to go into the water. In many cases there may be shallow areas when you can still get wet without having to actually swim. Please contact us for more information.

Cost and Fees

What does "paid locally" mean.

Some tours require you to pay national park fees directly, in cash, to the tour guide on the morning of departure. Rest assured this will be subtracted from the tour price when reserving your tour.

Will I need additional money?

Visitors are advised to bring some cash as ATMs and banks can be few and far between depending on where we are during the trip. Its handy to have some extra cash as we do stop by local shops and cafe.

Do I need to tip our guide?

If you had an amazing time on tour and wish to tip the guide, then that is completely up to you. However, tipping is not customary in Australia and is not at all expected.

Are there any hidden fees I need to know about?

Our tour prices are completely transparent. There are no additional fees involved that are not included in the overall tour price shown. If you wish to do optional activities such as helicopter rides or wildlife safaris, then an extra cost may be needed. However, this will always be made clear at the time of your booking.

Whilst on tour

What type of tent will i get.

Tents are generally designed to accommodate a minimum of 2 people. This means there is plenty of room to move about and store your luggage. However, most Uluru tours we try and encourage the use of swags and mattress rather than tents. This is the ideal way to camp in the centre of Australia; Around a campfire, under the stars!

What will the food be like?

Our emphasis is on fresh food wherever possible and our meals are nutritious and varied on these tours. If you are vegetarian or gluten intolerant we can cater for you, but if you have very specific dietary needs you may need to provide your own food, please discuss this at time of booking. For breakfast we supply cereals, fruits, toast, tea and coffee. Lunch is usually a self-serve picnic sandwich and salads; in the evening we have a cooked dinner - This can vary between pastas, bbqs, rices and other hearty food to keep you energized! We always carry water in the vehicle and you will often have the chance to buy your own drinks, ice-creams etc at stops. Please refer to each individual tour/package to establish which meals are included.

Can you cater of special diets?

We can certain cater for most dietary needs. Please advise us at the time of your booking so arrangements can be made. For travellers with more extreme diets we may ask that you bring along additional snacks.

Can I book extra accommodation for the start and end of the tour?

Definitely - We know Australia inside and out and would be happy to give you good recommodations.

What form of vehicle do we use?

For our Uluru Tours we toss between a Troop Carrier 4WD Landcruise and a 4WD Mini bus. This depends on the size of the group and the amount of days we are out in the park. Each tour varies so please refer to your tour info panel on the top right hand side of the page.

Are there days where we travel for a long time?

During the first day we usually do a couple of hours driving to get out of the city and into the country side. However, once in the national parks, trips between attractions usually take between 30minutes to an hour.

For tours heading up to Darwin or down to Adelaide, expect periods where we drive for a few hours at a time. Australia is enormous and the distance between towns and attractions can be quite large. But don't worry, we take plenty of breaks so your able to stretch and move about.

For more accurate information please see tour itineraries.

What will the weather be like?

Between the months of April and August Central Australia is quite cold so be sure to bring warm clothing. Temperatures range from about 20c during the day right down to 2c at night.

Between October and March temperature are warm, so light clothing during the day is ok. However, night times can still be quite cool so its wise to bring light winter clothing for extra warm.

Where do I meet the tour?

Our tour guide picks up from all major hotels and hostels. For pick locations in suburban or rural areas please contact us to arrange a meeting point and time.

Road trip adelaide to alice springs.

Table of Contents

In life, there are some unforgettable experiences and it is undoubtedly the case for my Road Trip Adelaide to Alice Springs. By crossing over 2,600 kilometers through the Northern Territory and South Australia, I was able to live a unique experience in the land of the Kangaroos.

Moreover, the Northern Territory and South Australia are two very different states which are home to some of the must-see places in Australia. Places like Uluru, Coober Pedy, Kings Canyon, etc. You can do the trip by renting a car. However, I believe the ideal way is to join a tour.

Road Trip Adelaide to Alice Springs

It is a good opportunity to meet other backpackers from all around the world and share experiences and tips. Interested in learning more about my Adelaide to Alice Springs Road Trip? If so, I’ll reveal all the secrets in this guide.

Mulgas Adventures Tour

One of the main reasons why I chose Mulgas Adventures Tour out of all the other travel agencies is because they truly care about Aboriginal culture.

With the Mulgas Adventures Tour, I was able to do my Road Trip Adelaide to Alice Springs without thinking about every detail.

Mulgas Adventures Tours Australia

Thanks to the travel agency, I was able to see Uluru at sunset, learn more about the aboriginal culture, and admire a magnificent starry sky. Additionally, all of Mulgas Adventures Tour guides are extremely kind and helpful.

Furthermore, the travel agency invites you to collect firewood and help prepare meals. These extra activities add a special vibe to the group’s conviviality.

Accommodation type

Hostel in coober pedy : radeka downunder underground motel & backpacker inn..

If you’re looking to live a unique unforgettable accommodation experience, I highly recommend Radeka Downunder Underground Motel & Backpacker Inn.

Why do I recommend it? Well, first and foremost, most of the hotel’s rooms are actually underground accommodation.

Hostel Coober Pedy Australia

They are warm in winter and cool in summer because they are tunneled out of the sandstone surroundings. Another reason why I recommend Radeka Downunder Underground Motel & Backpacker Inn is because of its location.

It is surrounded by restaurants, shops, and bars. Additionally, the accommodation is very clean with all the necessary equipment for sleeping underground. I believe even claustrophobic people can try it!

Hostel at Alice Springs: Alice Lodge Backpacker

Another great accommodation I tried is Alice Lodge Backpacker. What’s so unique about this Australian accommodation? Firstly, Alice Lodge Backpacker is located 5 minutes from the Town’s Mall.

Secondly, Alice Lodge Backpacker is a fantastic place to rest while discovering the beautiful town of Alice Springs. Thirdly, all of Alice Lodge Backpackers rooms have comfy beds, individual air-conditioning/heating, desk with office chair, a fridge, and security lockers.

Additionally, you can enjoy a fully equipped shared kitchen, TV lounge, and a barbecue area. Furthermore, it is a good place to meet new friends in Alice Springs.

Campsite: Ayers Rock Campground

Ayers Rock Campground or Uluru Campsite is a special home base located 20km from the city. Uluru Campsite is a massive campground with great facilities and large powered sites. It provides numerous services and facilities including a playground, swimming pool, outdoor kitchen, and bbq facilities.

Additionally, you can watch the sunset over Uluru from the camp and when you wake up, you’ll be surprised by a beautiful egg & bacon breakfast that you won’t soon forget! Furthermore, you’ll find an On-site food van that offers delicious dishes.

Road Trip Adelaide to Alice Springs highlights

Day 1: woomera and coober pedy.

We started the Road Trip Adelaide to Alice Springs from Adelaide CBD. It is the main shopping area in the town. There you’ll find Topham Mall, Central Market, and Rundle Mall.

Additionally, Adelaide CBD is bursting with culture and entertainment events.  In this area, you’ll also find an endless collection of museums, music shows, and award-winning restaurants. In short, Adelaide CBD is a great point of start for your Road Trip in Australia.

Aircraft at Woomera South Australia

After discovering Adelaide CBD, we headed to Woomera, one of the most unique places in Australia and perhaps even in the world. From 1946, Woomera served as a base for the British atomic and space program.

Moreover, tests took place near Woomera causing catastrophic radioactive fallout on the Aboriginal tribes. In this Australian town, there are plenty of rockets and military planes.

Furthermore, the army still tests their machines in this prohibited zone. The next stop during the first day was Lake Hart, a salt one accessible from the rest area. The place is extremely photogenic and next to a railway track.

Additionally, Lake Hart is as beautiful by day as it is by night. It is distinguished by a shallow pink color and a high concentration of salt. The lake’s seclusion in the backcountry gives it incredible stargazing, however, it is just as awe-inspiring as the salt shines in the sun.

Woomera Salt Lake South Australia

After taking some amazing pictures that will undoubtedly leave numerous people jealous, I continued my journey towards Coober Pedy where I’ll have a rest for the night.

Located 846 km north of Adelaide, Coober Pedy supplies 80% of the worldwide opals. This Australian village is a must-see place during your Road Trip from Adelaide to Alice Springs. It is the first cave city in Australia.

Additionally, the red dust and the drought give Coober Pedy the appearance of an abandoned city or another planet.

However, be careful about the extreme temperatures in the area, they can even reach 50 degrees sometimes. So, I urge you to wear a hat, hydrate yourself and stay safe!

Day 2: Exploring Coober Pedy - South Australia

After a pleasant calm night, it was time to explore Coober Pedy, an Australian gem. We started our day with a visit to the Kangaroo Orphanage.

It is in fact a shop presenting local Aboriginal crafts which organize at the end of every day a visit to their back shop, converted into an orphanage for kangaroos. Coober Pedy Kangaroo Orphanage takes care of injured kangaroos and joeys.

Opal Museum Coober Pedy Australia

Additionally, when you enter the Orphanage feeding area, you’ll find a small fence where you can see and feed all the kangaroos. After some fun time with kangaroos, it was time to learn more about the Opal industry. As I wrote before, Coober Peddy is related to opal.

You only need to walk around the town center for a few minutes to realize this. To learn more about opal and how to find it, you can visit one of the city’s many mines.

For AUD 15 per person, it is possible to descend into the mine and follow an explanatory route about the mine and how to find opal.

Kangaroo Orphenage Coober Pedy Australia

Additionally, some mines offer a free demonstration early in the morning. For our part, we went to the Umoona Opal museum.

This institution teaches you a little more about miners, the discovery of opals in the 1910s, and the transformation of Coober Peddy. I put on a helmet and I strolled through this maze of galleries, old mines, and old dwellings.

Coober Pedy Australia

Additionally, in Umoona Opal Museum, you can watch free movies about the miners’ lives and admire free exhibitions about the history of the town.

Lastly, I finished the day by admiring spacecraft, abandoned vehicles, big spiders, and colorful mountains of the breakaways. I must admit Coober Pedy is one of the most unique places I have ever been in!

Day 3: Cooper Pedy to Alice Springs

On the third day, it was time to say goodbye to Coober Pedy and head to Alice Springs. On the way, we got the chance to see the SA/NT Border Wall. SA stands for South Australia and NT stands for the Northern Territory which was previously a part of SA.

Breakaways Mountain Australia

This border wall runs for 257 km southwards along the border with New South Wales. After 7 hours, we arrived at Alice Springs.

It’s the Red Center of Australia because it is located exactly in the center of the Australian continent. Additionally, the city has more art galleries per capita than any other city in the country.

SA-NT Border Australia

Furthermore, it is a city with lots of shops, restaurants, malls, etc. On top of that, according to legend, the area surrounding Alice Springs was created by ancestral figures (nomadic boys, two sisters, and animals).

This legend of Alice Springs is one of the founding stories in Australia. Before starting your visit to the town, you must first stop at the famous “Welcome to Alice Springs’ ‘ sign.

Welcome to Alice Springs Sign

It is a big, long, and red sign similar to the landscape. Located on the Stuart Highway, the Welcome to Alice Springs sign sends out a Northern Territory greeting style as you’re getting ready to enter the town.

Concerning the accommodation, I stayed at Alice Lodge Hostel that I previously mentioned. As for activities, I started with paying a visit to Alice Springs Camel Farm.

Riding a Camel at Alice Springs Camel Farm Northern Territory Australia

Owned by Marcus William, a camel man since 1982, Camel Farm is a natural area that leaves minimal impact on the environment. Visiting Camel Farm is a great opportunity to learn about camels and their history in the region.

Additionally, you can ride camels while a farmer makes them run fast when you ride them. After a blessing time at Camel Farm, I went to Anzac Hill.

Anzac Hill Alice Springs Australia

It is Alice Springs’s most visited attraction and the perfect place to get a bird’s-eye view of the town. Anzac Hill offers panoramic views of Alice Springs and the surrounding mountains that surround it.

Additionally, The Anzac Hill Memorial was inaugurated on April 25th (Anzac Day). It serves as a tribute to all members of the army forces who lost their lives during World War I. Today, Anzac Hill Memorial is a tribute to all who have served and defended Australia.

Day 4: Kings Canyon - Northern Territory

We started the fourth day of this road trip by visiting the famous Watarrka National Park. It houses the Kings Canyon and is one of the Australian wild wonders sculpted by nature.

Concerning Kings Canyon, it is distinguished by vertiginous reddened cliffs and offers splendid views over the whole of Watarrka Park.

Kings Canyon Northern Territory Australia

At the bottom of the deep gorges, you’ll find water points that have allowed in some places the development of lush vegetation in an otherwise desert environment.

Additionally, Kings Canyon is a refuge for the surrounding flora and fauna. Furthermore, The Watarrka National Park has been populated by the arboreal Luritja people for over 20,000 years.

They are the ones who named the region “Watarrka ” after a genus of acacia that is abundantly found there.

Additionally, the Watarrka region was a sacred place for the Luritja, which also served as an area of refuge during severe droughts thanks to the many waterholes in Kings Canyon. Also, I couldn’t go to Kings Canyon without trying its famous walk. I walked 6km in 3.5 hours.

Orange Rocks Kings Canyon Australia

To meander through Kings Canyon you have to climb it first to see its orange cliffs. At the top of the Canyon, the view is worth it! On the horizon, the desert spread out before my wide-open eyes.

I felt my energy, boosted by the excitement, rising in me! I was ready for hours of walking in this Australian landscape. After a few meters, I arrived at a sort of stone amphitheater.

Swiming at the garden of Eden - Kings Canyon Australia

Monoliths stood in layers and surrounded me. The show was really cool! I continued my walk in astonishment until I arrived at the famous Canyon.

It’s unbelievable how orange dominates, it even reigns supreme. Additionally, don’t miss out on the Garden of Eden. It is a green oasis located behind the large crevasse.

Remake of Lion King at Kings Canyon Australia

In the Garden of Eden, the vegetation reigns supreme, making it the perfect place to organize a picnic.  Furthermore, when the heat gets stifling atop the rocks, there is the extraordinary possibility of swimming in the shade in a natural pool bordered by a small waterfall.

Also, if you can spot a rock, you can make a remake of the lion king! You’ll make many friends jealous for sure!

Day 5: Mount Conner, Kata Tjuta and Ayers Rock

On the fifth day of this Road Trip in Australia, we explored Mount Conner. It is a plateau mountain 350 m in height. The aborigines nicknamed it Atila. Mount Conner is part of the same rock formation similar to Uluru and Kata Tjuta.

Mount Conner Northern Territory Australia

Additionally, The region enjoys a dry and sunny climate all year round. Therefore, it can be visited at any time. Furthermore, seeing the rain streaming down Mont Conner is a rare and exceptional sight!

There, you’ll find a small parking lot with toilets and a viewpoint to photograph it. We continued our journey by discovering Kata Tjuta Domes, also known as the Olgas.

The Olgas Australia

Kata Tjuta Domes are an integral part of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, located near the small town of Yulara. We were completely mesmerized by the Olgas’ red color. From a distance, it looked like the area was covered in dust, but when we looked up close they were actually rock formations.

There was a collection of 36 rounded rock formations that emerged from the desert. Concerning Kata Tjuta Domes’ view, it was as impressive as it could be! From the observation platform, we could see the size of the rocks and the immensity of the area.

Kata Tjuta Kinga Canyon National Park Australia

Additionally, when you do the Olgas’ walk, you’ll visit the valley of the winds. It offers a magnificent view of several rocks, all rounded but very high.  Furthermore, while doing the Kata Tjuta walk, you’ll have the chance to visit Walpa Gorge.

It  will lead you straight into a canyon, surrounded by mountains, each more impressive than the next. To end this amazing day, me and the rest of the tour participants went to admire Uluru’s sunset.

Uluru Ayers Rock Northern Territory Australia

From Uluru’s Viewpoint, we saw the sun setting behind us little by little. The show was purely magical! We saw the rocks changing colors as the sun went down. Additionally, the van was carrying a Charcoal Grill BBQ Catering Trailer.

We had the opportunity to enjoy BBQs during the whole tour. We ate Kangaroo meat which is very tender, low in calories, and particularly lean. We also ate Camel Mea which is low in fat and has numerous nutritious benefits.

Day 6 : Uluru Caves

On the sixth day, we continued our Road Trip Adelaide to Alice Springs towards Uluru, a sacred Aboriginal site with over 600 million years old history. Uluru site is now visited by more than 300,000 tourists per year. Additionally, its walk spreads to 10km.

Uluru - Ayers Rock Caves - Australia

Long ago, it was allowed to climb to the top but following a few incidents and to save this sacred site, climbing was prohibited since 2019. But even if you can’t climb Uluru, I invite you to go see Uluru Ayers Rock.

It offers one of the most beautiful sunset views in the world. You’ll have the chance to see the last rays of light hit Uluru’s Rock.

When the sun is at one of its lowest points, you’ll see the entire rock turning red for a couple minutes. It is a beautiful moment to witness so be sure to pay attention when the time comes.

Also, I suggest you visit it at sunrise, there are fewer people and the show is also magical.  We also had the opportunity to visit Uluru’s caves. They are wind and shallow caves which were used by the Australian aborigines as shelters. Uluru’s caves are cool and provide shade which is a blessing in hot times.

Day 7: Back to Alice Springs and Flight to Cairns

Just like anything in life, everything has a beginning and an end. On the seventh day, it was time to finish this amazing tour. Time to go back to Alice Springs and then head to the airport to catch my flight.

During these 7 days, I met new friends, admired beautiful landscapes, and experienced numerous adventures. In only 7 days, I made so many unforgettable memories that I will always cherish. It was the end of a beautiful journey but also the start of a new one!

The Road Trip Adelaide to Alice Springs is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I’m so glad I did it with the tour agency because it made my life so much easier.

However, if you don’t want to do a tour, it is absolutely doable with a group of people by renting a 4*4 car and going for the adventure!

I  hope this guide helped you in your Road Trip preparations. Please, don’t forget to tell me about your expectations and experiences. I look forward to reading your comments!
