Netarhat is situated 140kms from Daltonganj. At a height of 1128 metres, the hill station is the among the highest points of the Chotanagpur plateau. The natural beauty of the place is simply splendid. Netarhat is especially known for its stunning views of sunrise and sunset and is popularly known as the Queen of Chotanagpur.

Almost 170 kms from Ranchi and surrounded by lush green forests, hills, valleys and waterfalls, Betla is a serene tribal village located in the Palamau District of Jharkhand bordering the jungle. It’s the main tourism centre of the Palamu Tiger Reserve. Chital deer and bison can be seen grazing in the grasslands. Elephants are available for tourist ride. Mahouts lead their elephants into the forest area.

This is a famous temple situated in the "Nagar" village at the foot of the picturesque and lush green Mountains about 10 km away from the center of chandwa town in Chandwa- Chatara main road. This holds a very high religious value for the people of the surrounding area. A Marriage Hall has also been recently built up there as this temple hosts many marriages during the marriage season every year.

The Lodh Falls, also known as Budhaghagh falls ,are located at 10 km North-west from the headquarter of mahuadanr block in Latehar district. It is the highest waterfall in Jharkhand and the 21st highest waterfall in India. The falls are located on the Budha River within the Chhota Nagpur Plateau forests. The falls measure a whopping 143 meters (469 ft) and make a thundering sound that could be heard from over 10 KM away.

Medellín declares war on sex tourism after US citizen found with two little girls at a hotel

The city’s mayor federico gutiérrez announces the six-month suspension of sex work in the neighborhood el poblado and limits operating hours of the bars and clubs in the area, in which he says sex trafficking is taking place.

The first repercussions of the discovery of a U.S. citizen with two girls, aged 12 and 13 respectively, in a luxury hotel in Medellín’s El Poblado neighborhood were announced on Monday. At a press conference, Mayor Federico Gutiérrez said that he would be signing two decrees: one, prohibiting sex work in the area of Medellín for six months, and another, the enforcement of a 1 a.m. closing time for bars in the area for a month. According to Gutiérrez, Lleras Park, the center of a neighborhood that is home to many nightclubs and restaurants patronized by foreign tourists, has become a magnet for crimes related to human trafficking, the drug trade and sexual abuse of minors.

In Colombia, sex work is neither illegal nor penalized, as indicated by the Constitutional Court’s case T-629. Still, Gutiérrez says he is acting under extraordinary circumstances, given the urgency of fighting back against the mafias that he says run El Poblado. On Monday, the mayor said: “We can’t prohibit sex work, but we can take care of those who provide services with the understanding that today, the area is under the control of various criminal organizations.”

Gutiérrez continued: “This situation has hit bottom. It is a serious, difficult situation.” He also announced that there would be meetings with owners of bars and hotels to clarify new “rules of the game”. Establishments that do not comply with the rules, added the mayor, will not only be subject to closure, but also to a possible termination of ownership rights. Gutiérrez’s announcement has aroused concerns that such a prohibition will not be effective in containing sex work, and that there is a possibility that problematic activity similar to that which has been taking place in El Poblado will continue in other parts of the city.

Last week’s case of the U.S. citizen has aroused indignation from Colombians and once again put a spotlight on the problem of sex tourism and its linked exploitation of children. The man, who has been identified as Timothy Allan Livingston, was discovered thanks to an individual who alerted the police that he was with the two girls at the Gotham Hotel, which is located nearby Lleras Park. Although he was arrested and detained for 12 hours, authorities eventually released him because he had not been caught in the act of sexually abusing the girls. He was released on Friday, and boarded a flight to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. An image of his passport, including his data and photo, has been posted to social media after details of his case came to light.

The El Poblado neighborhood, where the hotel in which Livingston was arrested is located, is an area of the city in which thousands of tourists can be found every night. It is full of bars, restaurants and hotels whose prices put them far out of reach for the average Colombian, and in which laws governing sex work are routinely disregarded. The Gotham Hotel’s website, which is presented entirely in English, offers three-story luxury apartments and a penthouse. In a line written in fine print at the bottom of the website, the establishment claims, “Gotham rejects the exploitation, pornography, and sexual tourism involving children and adolescents.”

After learning of the case, Medellín authorities ordered a 10-day closure of the Gotham. Mayor Gutiérrez, nonetheless, advocated for more severe measures, saying that the hotel should undergo a process to consider the revocation of its ownership rights, an idea that he repeated on Monday. “This single episode, which demonstrates the existence of sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, should be sufficient cause to apply termination of ownership rights. A mere 10-day closure is ridiculous,” announced the mayor. Radical feminist collectives like the Red Abolicionista de Medellín (Medellín Abolitionist Network) have called for a sit-in on April 9 at 6 p.m. to protest the exploitation of minors and women.

On Sunday afternoon, the city announced that it had assigned an official from the Center for Comprehensive Care for Victims of Sexual Abuse (Caivas) to determine whether Livingston had been involved in “criminal conduct related to inducing sexual practices” with the two girls in Medellín. Depending on the investigation’s findings, the office will consider the possibility of initiating termination of ownership rights at the hotel where the events allegedly occurred.

Medellín’s shadowy tourism

Sex tourism is just one side of a larger and more complex issue. In recent months, there have been several cases of U.S. citizens who have died amid suspicious circumstances in the city. In January, U.S. authorities advised travelers to avoid using dating apps such as Tinder, Grindr and Bumble in Medellín after several cases of varying severity in which U.S. citizens were drugged, robbed and even murdered during encounters arranged through apps. “Numerous U.S. citizens in Colombia have been drugged, robbed, and even killed by their Colombian dates,” warned the U.S. embassy in a January 10 security alert.

According to U.S. authorities, last year there was an increase in reports of incidents related to the use of dating apps, which are often used to attract victims and rob them, whether through force or with the use of sedatives. The Antioquia capital has also been the site of problems arising from the union of rampant tourism and drug trafficking, and the transformation of certain areas of the city to suit the needs and desires of visitors, many of whom are foreigners.

If you ask Rich Cahill to define sustainable tourism, he'll tell you about the wilderness next to the Panama Canal where you can find ocelots, howler monkeys, and three-toed sloths. It's about explaining to visitors that nature is both fragile and resilient — a contradiction that's on full display in these lush Central American rainforests.

"People think they know sustainability," says Cahill, who runs Ancon Expeditions , a Panamanian tour operator. "But they're not thinking big enough."

Sustainable means something different to David Kianni, general manager of the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo . To him, it's about being a responsible corporate citizen — no single-use plastics, and having an active conservation initiative — and creating a mentorship program that supports native culture.

Just down a cobblestone street in Old Town Panama City, you'll find yet another definition of sustainability at the just-opened Amarla Casco Viejo , a boutique hotel. For general manager María Antonieta Ramírez, it's about following all the best practices of conservation and promoting artists like Phoebe Montague Warr, whose riveting images of Panama's biodiversity are on display in the guest rooms.

Sustainability in tourism is a broad topic that covers environmental protection, supporting local communities and cultural preservation. But what does sustainability really mean?

I'll be asking that question as I travel through the Caribbean, a part of the world that has aggressively pursued a reputation for sustainability in tourism. But how sustainable is the Caribbean when compared to other places? How can you tell if a destination is really sustainable? And ultimately, is sustainability worth it, not just to the visitor and the business, but also to the affected communities?

For a benchmark, I decided to start in Panama, perhaps one of the sustainability pioneers. Guides like Cahill were leading tourists through tropical rainforests decades ago, before ecotourism became a household word. Panama also has a colorful history as an adventure destination, featuring dictators, military invasions and plenty of intrigue. Plus, it's an airline hub that connects to many Caribbean islands, as well as other destinations in the Americas and Europe.

What is sustainable tourism?

Experts will tell you that, on its broadest level, sustainable tourism is about reducing the negative environmental, social, and economic consequences of travel. But it's also about helping local communities and preserving natural and cultural resources for people who live in the affected areas.

Sustainability means that you can keep coming back to the place again and again without worrying about it being depleted or destroyed. And here are three main ways a destination can pursue a sustainability goal:

Reducing environmental damage

Sustainable tourism tries to lower carbon emissions, reduce waste and conserve resources. Hotel recycling programs and carbon neutrality commitments by airlines fall under this category.

Helping local communities

Sustainability is also about empowering local communities through small business mentorship programs and sourcing local products. When your boutique hotel offers a locally made drink or soap product, chances are it's part of a sustainability effort.

Preserving culture

The final aspect of sustainable tourism is about helping people maintain local cultures and traditions. This may include promoting a range of tourist-related activities that allows visitors to appreciate the ways of the indigenous society.

These three core sustainability principles sound simple enough. But when it comes down to it, the definition is like sand in your fingers. It's elusive. It sounds promotional, and at times gimmicky. And ultimately, isn't sustainability something airlines, hotels and tour operators should have been doing all along?

In the Panama Canal, a practical definition of sustainability

The Panama Canal is an unlikely ecotourism destination. Dredging a canal between the Atlantic and Pacific disrupted fragile ecosystems and led to the extinction of several species, notably the golden frog. But the security concerns also preserved fragile rainforest, and after gaining ownership of the canal from the U.S., Panama created Soberania National Park to protect the area surrounding the canal.

Today, the national park is home to some of the most spectacular birdwatching in Central America. You can see everything from crested guans and toucan to heron and antbirds hawks in the forests. These animals have adapted to the canal. It isn't uncommon to see a monkey or jaguar swimming across the canal during a boat tour.

Cahill, an American who grew up in Panama, remembers when the U.S. still administered the canal and the entire area was closed off to most people. Ironically, he says the military bases and travel restrictions saved the area from development and made it one of the leading ecotourism attractions in Latin America.

And then the visitors came.

"Growth is a tough thing without good planning," he says. "It's easy to forget that."

But growth is very much on everyone's mind in Panama. That's because the country has seen an influx in visitors as more cruise ships have come through the Panama Canal. A new cruise terminal has opened just outside Panama City, straining the city's limited tourism infrastructure.

"When you get all these cruise ships coming in, you can see the consequences of poor planning," adds Cahill.

So that's one perspective. Panama wasn't meant to be an ecotourism destination, but it became one despite the serious consequences of a canal being dug through it — maybe even because of it. And now it is struggling with its own success. More people want to see Panama, to transit through the canal, to go birdwatching and to experience the rainforests that maybe would have been decimated if it hadn't been for the canal.

The canal should have destroyed the environment, but the rainforests are resilient and the enormous public works project ended up protecting the environment, in a way. It's a curious contradiction.

Can an airline be sustainable?

Back in Casco Viejo, Panama's old town, there are more people wrestling with the same questions: What, exactly, does it mean to be sustainable?

For example, what if you're an airline? Air carriers are constantly getting themselves into trouble for claiming to be green. In the last six months, several governments have handed out fines to airlines who made bold but ultimately false claims about their carbon offset programs. The smart airlines are keeping a low profile — and making a difference where they can.

Katherine Katsudas, a senior manager at Copa Airlines , is pondering sustainability over lunch at Kaandela, the Amarla Casco Viejo's restaurant. For the Panamanian carrier, sustainability is about giving back to the community by subsidizing its low-key Aeronautical Technicians Academy. The airline quietly opened the training facility in Tocumen, just outside Panama City, a few years ago. It offers young men and women from disadvantaged backgrounds full scholarships to train as aircraft mechanics.

"And they have a guaranteed job waiting for them when they graduate," she says.

The program has benefited everyone by graduating 132 maintenance technicians, she adds. It removed one of the major obstacles to higher learning for the young people enrolled in the program, which is that they can't afford tuition and end up missing classes because of financial or family obligations. The 86 students currently enrolled in the program receive a stipend for living expenses.

It also gives people from an underprivileged community, many of whom live just a stone's throw from the airport, a chance to have a stake in one of Panama's most successful businesses.

Few travelers stop to consider the aircraft mechanic who maintains their plane, or the low-income neighborhood next to the airport when they land in Panama City. But it is all part of an economic ecosystem that must also be sustainable in order for all this to work, according to Katsudas.

Being a good corporate citizen is something Copa was doing long before sustainability was a buzzword. But now that someone has given it a name, the airline has fully embraced it.

A boutique hotel that supports sustainability

Upstairs in the Amarla's guest rooms, you can see sustainability efforts on display. Each room in this meticulously restored 120-year-old boutique property is completely unique, and that extends to the framed photos on the walls, many of which are for sale. The images depict indigenous people in the Panamanian rainforests. The photos are colorful and visually arresting.

Ramírez, the hotel's general manager, explains that the photographer’s works are intended to support the heritage of different indigenous communities.

"The portrait capture the essence and diversity of its people — breathtaking landscapes, nature, fauna and the enduring spirit of its indigenous communities," she explains.

She says 30% of profits go back to indigenous individuals in the picture, the community where the image was shot, or to their chosen charity.

This type of sustainability is becoming more common in Latin American luxury hotels, where guests are looking for more than a written commitment to sustainability. They want something tangible, and maybe even something they can take home with them to remind them of their adventure.

Building sustainability through coconut oil

The Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo has a fascinating backstory. The building was a military club that was almost completely leveled by U.S. forces during the 1989 Panama invasion. According to several people I spoke with, the Americans believed Manuel Noriega was hiding there. He wasn't.

Just before the pandemic, the hotel was rebuilt as a luxury urban resort. Today, visitors can relax at its elegant Mayda bar overlooking the canal and watch the cruise ships float by.

The Sofitel's sustainability program feels like a combination of the approaches taken by Copa and Amarla. It's a mentorship initiative that develops young indigenous entrepreneurs in collaboration with the Forest Stewardship Council Indigenous Foundation , an organization that supports indigenous people worldwide. The Sofitel marketing team is working with the Guna Ogob community to create a sustainable business selling coconut oil.

"We've been guiding the young talent step by step as to how to go from setting up the business to marketing and selling the coconut oil, as well as managing its finances and cash flow," explains Kianni, the hotel's general manager. "Our mentorship Initiative has been developed to help the indigenous community to further develop their business model and gain revenues to be used by the community."

Kianni says Guna Ogob Coconut Oil is about to become an official business, through its mentorship program will be supported by the hotel. But he's gone a step further, and is in contact with Sofitel corporate to use this model for other hotels within the brand, which will support other indigenous communities.

Why bother being sustainable?

I asked Kianni why he was spending valuable resources on developing a coconut oil business at a time when the Panamanian lodging industry is still struggling to recover from the aftereffects of the pandemic. He said people expect more than green certifications and recycling programs.

"They want to make a real difference," he told me.

That may be the biggest takeaway from the Panamanian sustainability experience. Whether you're guiding travelers through the locks of the Panama Canal, training underprivileged people to become aircraft mechanics, or selling photos of indigenous people or marketing coconut oil, people are tired of the talk. They want action — not words.

Simply saying that you are sustainable is no longer enough in the travel industry. You have to think big.

Officials mum about potential sale of Las Vegas Trump Hotel

The 64-story Trump International Hotel doesn’t have a casino and it’s unclear whether it could be sold to pay off Donald Trump’s court judgments.

Could the nongaming Trump International Hotel just off the Strip be sold to generate revenue for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s enormous civil fraud penalties?

The people closest to the property’s ownership — Trump and business partner Phil Ruffin — aren’t saying, and lodging industry experts say they haven’t heard anything about a potential sale of the 64-story, 1,282-suite property, which opened in 2008.

Ruffin also is the owner of the Treasure Island and Circus Circus hotel-casinos.

The Associated Press in February reported that New York Attorney General Letitia James said she would attempt to seize Trump properties to pay the $454 million civil fraud penalty that, with interest, is escalating by an estimated $87,502 a day.

Trump was assessed the fine following a Feb. 16 ruling by Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron. In January, a jury also ordered Trump to pay an $83.3 million judgment for defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. Trump has denied wrongdoing and vows to appeal.

Whether James, a Democrat, would attempt to seize Trump International in Las Vegas is unclear.

Clark County records show the parcel is owned by Trump Ruffin Tower I LLC.

Contacted Friday, a representative for Ruffin said he would have no comment on the matter, and Trump hotel officials did not return calls seeking comment.

Trump and Ruffin struck up a friendship when they partnered to build the tower, initially targeted as a condominium high-rise. When condo sales flagged in the run-up to the Great Recession, the Trump Organization changed strategies and brought in Hilton Grand Vacations to take some of the suites as timeshare units. Some suites also were made available as hotel rooms.

Because of the plan to develop residences, the Trump Organization opted not to put a casino in the property.

At the time, Eric Trump, a son of Donald Trump and one of the top local executives, explained the unusual strategy of having a Strip property without a casino.

“We have no problem getting a gaming license, but we wanted to do something different here,” Eric Trump said “We wanted a true luxury resort experience. It’s hard to have a high-quality product when you walk into ‘ding, ding, ding’ and there are people walking around in Hawaiian shirts with big plastic drink mugs.”

Trump and Ruffin planned building a second nearly-identical tower at the site, but those plans fell through as the recession hit.

The local Trump hotel has two restaurants and a pool deck. In addition to opting against adding a casino, developers decided to have small meeting rooms instead of a convention center.

The transition of The Mirage to Hard Rock Las Vegas will generate nostalgic memories, but it’s part of the Las Vegas way of constantly evolving to what’s next.

A Southwest Airlines plane headed for Las Vegas was halted Thursday night during takeoff in Lubbock, Texas, because of “a possible engine issue.”

The 1950s resort is expected to be demolished — possibly imploded — in October.

Clark County is expected to take its next big step toward developing an airport to supplement Harry Reid airport by early summer.

The Texas-based airline continues to rapidly expand its flights at Harry Reid International Airport.

Plans have been submitted to build a hotel that will include a synagogue and kosher restaurants.

Tuesday marks the 83rd anniversary of the opening of the first hotel-casino on Las Vegas Boulevard, which started as an extension of a California motel brand.

Tears, cheers and beers. They all marked the final hours of the Tropicana, one of the oldest of the remaining old-school casinos on the Las Vegas Strip.

The land sits across the street from several of the acclaimed restaurants in Chinatown and could be a prime candidate for redevelopment.

Visitors made their way through the buzzing property Saturday night, snapping last pictures of the property’s stained glass.

Medellín, Colombia, bans sex work in two areas after U.S. tourist found with minors

The mayor of Medellín, the second-largest city in Colombia, announced Monday a temporary ban on prostitution in two of its neighborhoods, days after an American tourist was discovered in a hotel room with two underage girls, according to The Associated Press .

Mayor Federico Gutiérrez said the ban would affect Provenza and El Poblado, popular destinations for international tourists and local sex workers, and he cited concerns about sex trafficking involving minors.

The ban will be in place for six months, and bars in Lleras Park will be required to close by no later than 1 a.m. over the month of April, according to a statement from the mayor’s office released Monday.

The latest actions "strengthen the measures against sexual and commercial exploitation, especially of girls, boys and adolescents, in areas affected by this crime," according to the statement.

It also states that the mayor's office plans to meet with hotel, restaurant and bar owners "to establish rules around the issue."

At a news conference on Monday, Gutierrez said, “We have to recover control of this area — it is also very important for us to protect the community.”

Sex work that is conducted between two consenting adults is not illegal in Colombia, but local governments reserve the right to impose temporary bans on the activity if they pose a threat to public order, according to AP, which also reported that the 36-year-old American tourist was held in police custody and then released.

At the news conference, Gutiérrez urged authorities to investigate the incident. “It is sad to see how many people believe they can come to Medellín and do whatever they want,” he said.

The total solar eclipse is a total business boost for hotels, rental cars, and Airbnb

O ver 32 million people in the U.S. live in the path of totality of the upcoming total solar eclipse . But not everyone is lucky enough to already live along the 60- to 70-mile wide stretch, cutting across 15 U.S. states, and parts of Mexico and Canada, that will see complete darkness for 4 minutes and 28 seconds on Monday, April 8.

Travelers are still clamoring to get in on the action — booking flights, rental cars, and lodgings to catch a glimpse of the event.

Michael Zeiler, an eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com, estimates that between 931,000 and 3.7 million people will travel from outside the path of totality on the day of the eclipse. The top states expecting travelers are Texas, Indiana, and Ohio, where the eclipse will be visible for the longest time. Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio are the most popular cities along the path of totality, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).

And travel-related businesses have been seeing major boosts in those areas as a result. Airbnb data shows a 1,000% increase in searches for stays along the solar eclipse path of totality in the U.S., touting that it has 15 times more listings than there are hotels in the total eclipse’s path.

An image shared by American political scientist Ian Bremmer on X Wednesday showed the high occupancy rates at Airbnbs across the path of totality for the eclipse weekend.

Searches on Expedia similarly soared as much as 1,100% for stays along the path of totality, including in Burlington, Vermont; Little Rock, Arkansas; Dayton, Ohio; Buffalo, New York; and Indianapolis, Indiana, the travel company said last month. Expedia added a feature that allows users to search “Solar Eclipse 2024” in the destination box to find properties within the path of totality for dates around April 8.

And people looking to book hotels will have to pay steep prices to reside in the path. Booking data from AAA showed that hotels in the most popular cities along the path of totality are 48% more expensive during the eclipse weekend than they were at the same time last year.

Car rental company Hertz reported a 3,000% rise in car rental advanced bookings in cities on the eclipse path for that Saturday, compared with last year.

The frenzy prompted the Federal Aviation Administration to warn fliers that there could be higher air traffic volume than normal at airports along the path of the eclipse, and that passengers should anticipate delays around these peak periods.

For those looking for an even more elevated viewing experience (minus a hotel booking and highway traffic), some airlines, including Alaska, Delta and JetBlue, are offering special flights at the exact time of the eclipse, to be able to view the celestial event from 30,000 feet in the air — giving people the clearest view, since they’re cruising above any potential cloud coverage.
