Is it hard to find your location and do you provide transportation?

We do not provide transportation. We will email you directions when we confirm your reservation. Our observing site  is located in Big Park VOC  about a 20 minute ride from the center of Sedona. The center of Sedona is where Hwy. 89A and Hwy. 179 cross. We have never had anyone get lost trying to find our location.

Do you have restrooms?

yes we have restrooms

Can we bring a bottle of wine and can we smoke at your site?

Our location is on private property. Alcohol and smoking are prohibited at our location.  Any guests Smoking outside vehicles on our property will  immediately be asked to leave and no refund will be provided.

Fire danger in in the desert is very real and we ask that you be a good steward of our environment and keep our community safe. Please leave no trace.

Can we bring our dog or pet?

We love pets but out of respect for our guests who might not like pets we do not allow pets on our tour.

In addition, the desert is very unforgiving to domestic pets. Especially at night when most of the nocturnal predators are active.

Are you handicapped accessible?

Our experience requires walking 200 yards on dirt and grass and sitting and standing to look through the eyepiece of the telescope. Some objects require a short step ladder. We are not considered handicap accessible due to the nature of our experience.

Do you serve drinks?

We don’t serve drinks but you are welcome to bring your own non alcoholic beverage.

What happens if it is cloudy on our scheduled night?

If the weather does not cooperate on your scheduled night we will attempt to reschedule your experience. Back up dates are on a space available basis. We do not guarantee back up dates. If we cannot get you rescheduled we will provide a 100 percent refund.

Which nights are the best viewing?

We recommend avoiding the 4 nights leading up to the full moon including the full moon night if you expect to see a star filled sky. We look at all of the same objects every night through the telescopes regardless of moon phase.

Should I book direct on the website or through a booking site like Viator, TripAdvisor or Groupon?

We always recommend booking directly on our website. We have the maximum flexibility to provide you with the ultimate customer service. Many times  booking through another site places your refund and customer service outside our ability to provide the exceptional customer service.

Judging from the positive reviews on here, I bet this could have been a great experience, if we had gotten to go on the tour and it hadn't been a complete nightmare. Going based off of the excellent reviews, we booked a tour with these guys the night before our visit, and unfortunately made a typo in the email address we submitted. This should not have been the end of the world. Our account was charged, but despite over 30 attempts to get in contact with these scam artists (phone calls, emails, and even texts) we heard nothing back until we got a text the next day at 4pm out of the blue saying they were watching the weather and may have to cancel the tour. We called that number over and over until an incredibly rude, dismissive, and passive aggressive woman answered and told us that there was no possible way to change the email info (which is how they were supposed to send the instructions for how to get to the site), and that they would let us know within a few minutes if the tour was even still on. A half hour later, with no information, we called them repeatedly again until the same rude woman answered and told us it was cancelled. When we texted and asked for a refund, they said they would do so (which they still haven't over a week later). When we expressed our concern with their communication style, we received a text that said that they could not control the weather with a smiley face emoji. What the fuck.

Amazing view, our astronomer guide Rick was fantastic and the sky tour was incredible! You will learn about constellations, science behind astronomy, and view distant space objects through a telescope. Our group saw over 6 shooting stats as well! You can't miss this while in Sedona, make a reservation and dress warm!

This was my first time participating in this type of tour. Although I've always liked star gazing, I only knew the basics (our solar system and maybe 1 or 2 stars). Our guide Matt made the tour really fun and easy to understand for someone like me yet keep it interesting for more advanced participants. We saw several stars and galaxies but I was really impressed with looking at Saturn. I knew how Saturn looked like through books but it's kind of weird seeing the same image through a lens. It's as if the sky is a one big book and the stars are drawings in that book. I wonder how Earth looks like from Saturn. On the last note, I hope Evening Sky Tours will consider providing reclining chairs or inflatable beds. The current chairs are not very comfortable when looking up.

My brother and his wife bought me a ticket to this star gazing experience as part of my wedding gift. We went last night and I have to say out of all the trips that I have made to Sedona, this has been my best experience so far. The star gazing takes place at a soccer field and it's very dark. They bring red flashing lights so that you can see without messing up your night vision. Groups are small, only 12 to a group so that it makes it easier for everyone to hear, and to maximize telescope time. I was very impressed by the fact that the guide not only brought chairs, but brought blankets for everyone since Sedona can get cool at night. Our guide was very knowledgeable and very animated. You could tell that he loves what he is teaching about. He told us all about the constellations, nebula, galaxies, twin stars, etc, pointing out the constellations with a green laser pointer, and letting us take turns looking at Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, twin stars, a nebula, a galaxy and more through the telescope. This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for adults and young adults and some children as well. My brother says he has never seen so many stars. It was beautiful. Visited June 2014

Do yourself a favor and take this "tour" during your stay in Sedona! We had a fantastic time. You meet at this soccer field outside of Sedona (not too far, ~20min drive) and are provided with chairs and blankets. Our guide, Matt, was entertaining and knowledgeable. Coming from the city, it's uncommon for us to get such great views of the stars, but out here, the sky really opens up. Expect amazing views of the stars, shooting stars, and planets with the naked eye. We started with a quick orientation to the visible constellations, followed by viewing of deep sky objects (galaxy clusters, the moon, planets, binary stars) through the telescope. Matt used this awesome laser pointer to highlight objects in the sky (where can I get one of those things?! That pointer is way stronger than the usual laser pointer), and he did a great job. You'll have a lot of fun with this tour, I'd say as an amateur astronomer or someone that's totally clueless. A bit pricey ($60/person), but worth it. Our tour started at 9PM and lasted a little over 90 minutes. Another word of advice, dress warmly - even with the blanket, it was pretty chilly. Don't forget some thick/layered socks!

Photo of Emily B.

We had a good experience with our stargazing tour. Our guide really knew his stuff about the stars and constellations. It was more informative than we were expecting but overall was a pleasant experience. We got to see Saturn, another galaxy millions of years old, shooting stars, and many constellations. Sedona has a beautiful sky and we enjoyed viewing it.

Photo of Srivitta K.

Ever seen the rings of Saturn? Mars? The rocky surface of the Moon? Shooting stars? Different galaxies? The Milky Way? Constellations and ancient stories of Ursa Major and Minor, Hercules and Perseus? This is the experience for you. On a trip through Red Rock Country, Sedona stargazing was the perfect nightcap. Our guide Matt, met us at our cars in the parking lot near a high school soccer field, and takes you to the location. Using a high powered telescope, you can things 100 MILLION miles away!! Matt gave such a great lecture, pointing to the night sky using a laser pointer and showed us all the different constellations and the stories to match (plus the scientific stuff). A great educational experience, great for families and kids, and adults! Also a romantic place for a date too (you can request group of all adults). Tips: Dress really warm and a hat is recommended. Chairs and blankets are provided. If you go on a night when the moon is dark or crescent you will see more stars! If the moon is too bright, the visibility of stars is dimmer.

We just got back from stargazing with Evening Sky Tours in Sedona and I felt the need to post a review right away because we had such a good time. The location was just a few minutes away from our hotel and easy to find. The friendly staff met us there and guided us to the parking area. Once everyone arrived we were split into 2 groups, each with its own guide and telescope. Our guide was Charlie. He was awesome! Funny, engaging, knowledgeable and helpful. He made sure everyone got to see everything and all questions were answered. Our group consisted of some people who knew a lot about space and some who didn't, but everyone seemed to have a great time. We saw a variety of sights through the telescope, from the Andromeda Galaxy to Jupiter and its moons (my favorite), plus many other things via Charlie's laser pointer. The evening lasted about 90 minutes. I would highly recommend it! We were lucky enough to get a Groupon for this and saved about 40%, but I think I would be just as positive had we paid full price. Such a fun experience!

Of all the things to do in Sedona, Evening Sky Tours *has* to be one of the most unique and enjoyable experiences. I wish I could do that every night to track with their astronomers how the sky changes through the seasons. David, our guide, had the masterful balance between massive amounts of knowledge and teacher. He made everything we saw easily understandable and accessible. How he keeps track of all that information, I have no idea. With the coolest laser pointer I have ever seen, he showed us the outlines of constellations and how to pick them out. Then, within those constellations, he showed us distant stars, nebula, star clusters, and (if memory serves), a galaxy that is close enough to be seen through the telescope, but far enough away as to only be seen as a streak of fuzz with a bright point in the middle. Throughout our time, as we waited our turn to peek in the telescope, we sat in comfy chairs and wrapped ourselves in blankets provided by Evening Sky Tours. Overhead, I counted at least 8 shooting stars--and I didn't even see all of them because other people in our group saw ones I did not see. The next time I am in Sedona, Evening Sky Tours will be at the tip top of my Must Do List. Thank you, Dave, for a great experience! Price per adult: $60. Worth every penny.

Photo of An N.

Sedona skies aren't as light polluted as the ones in DC and paying $60 a person to see them was not the best use of my time or money. Just driving around and parking at the turn offs was enough to see plenty of stars. It was cool to see Jupiter, our guide was knowledgeable, but I don't remember half of it.

If you’re a fan of celestial pursuits, Sedona’s vast, clear, and unpolluted skies make it a haven for stargazing. Its remote location, high altitude, and the city’s commitment to dark sky preservation make for unbeatable nocturnal viewing. Whether you’re a seasoned astronomer or a casual stargazer, the following are some of the best places in Sedona to sit back and marvel at the universe’s natural light show.

Sedona Airport Overlook

Perched atop a mesa, the Sedona Airport Overlook offers panoramic views of the city’s majestic red rocks. But as the sun sinks and the stars begin to twinkle, this spot transforms into one of the best places to stargaze in Sedona. The vista point’s high elevation minimizes light pollution and provides a broad, open sky for optimal viewing. Remember to bring a blanket or folding chair for comfort.

Red Rock State Park

Red Rock State Park is another excellent option for starry-eyed explorers. The park offers Night Sky programs where experts share interesting astronomical facts and guide you through the night sky. You’ll have access to telescopes and binoculars for close-ups of planets, galaxies, and other celestial wonders.

Doe Mountain Trail

For the adventurous, a night-time hike up Doe Mountain Trail will reward you with stunning, unobstructed views of the starry sky. The top is flat and offers 360-degree views, perfect for setting up a telescope. Be sure to pack a headlamp for safety, as the trail can be challenging to navigate in the dark.

Cathedral Rock

The iconic Cathedral Rock is not just a photographer’s dream during the day, but it’s also a superb stargazing spot. The trail is moderately difficult and best attempted by those with some hiking experience. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking backdrop of the night sky strewn with constellations.

Oak Creek Canyon

Lastly, a drive up Oak Creek Canyon will lead you to several secluded spots ideal for stargazing. One of the popular ones is Grasshopper Point. Surrounded by towering canyon walls, this place offers a mesmerizing perspective of the heavens above.

Guided Tours and Events

For those wanting a guided experience, several local companies offer stargazing tours. Evening Sky Tours and Sedona Stargazing are two highly-rated options. They provide telescopes and knowledgeable guides who can help you navigate the night sky.

The Sedona Star Party is an annual event not to be missed. Hosted by the Sedona Chamber of Commerce and the city’s Astronomers Club, it’s a gathering of astronomy enthusiasts who share their passion and knowledge. You’ll have the opportunity to look through a variety of telescopes and learn about different celestial bodies.

Tips for Stargazing in Sedona

Before heading out, check the weather – clear skies are essential for stargazing. Also, the best views come during the new moon phase, when the sky is darkest. Remember to bring warm clothes, as desert temperatures can drop dramatically after sunset. A red flashlight will help preserve your night vision while providing enough light to move around safely.

In conclusion, Sedona’s mix of accessible locations, guided tours, and annual star events make it a must-visit for all stargazers. From the breathtaking vistas of Cathedral Rock to the serene seclusion of Oak Creek Canyon, you’ll find a spot that fits your adventure level and provides a truly awe-inspiring view of the cosmos. So, pack your telescope, and let Sedona’s night sky take you on a journey through the stars.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Venture to the Thunder Mountain Trailhead to admire a stunning sunset, then wait for the sky to darken and you'll experience an unforgettable 360-degree starscape view. – Carol Kahn, Contributor, Travel

Sedona is known for its magnificent landscape views, stunning sunsets, amazing hiking trails and the arts. And, when the night brings darkness, Sedona's skies are illuminated with some of the world's most brilliant stars and constellations. Even the Milky Way adds drama with its luminous hue.

In fact, in 2014, Sedona was named an International Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association. For those who love the twinkling lights, grab a blanket and head out to view nature's light show. You may get lucky and see a shooting star or two, or you might want to lie back and bask in the starlight glow.

If you are staying close to Uptown Sedona, a short, 5-minute jaunt to Brins Mesa should be on your agenda. Despite its proximity to Uptown, Brins Mesa is far enough away from the city lights to offer a great view of the night sky. You may even be able to make out the outline of the surrounding red rocks when there's a full moon.

You may also want to take a ride to the Baldwin Trailhead in the Village of Oak Creek. This spot is unmatched by any other in Sedona since it allows you to view the stars above the monolith of Cathedral Rock .

Perhaps you can catch a shooting star or meteor shower by taking a short journey down the Fay Canyon Trail, which is located less than 10 miles west of central Sedona. Walk past the tree-lined entrance where the skies open and you'll arrive at the perfect place to see nature's fireworks.

If you're interested in a guided stargazing experience, consider signing up for a tour with a company like Sedona Stargazing. You'll use the company's powerful binoculars and telescopes to view planets, galaxies and star clusters under the guidance of an astronomer. Past travelers praised the company for its knowledgeable guides and the high-quality telescopes.

Humans have been looking into the heavens at night in the dark skies above Sedona, Arizona, for thousands of years. If you’re seeking the perfect place to gaze at the stars on a clear night, you won’t be disappointed with this popular destination.

Let’s Discuss Ways to Experience the Best Stargazing in Sedona

With its incredible red rock formations, dark sky community, and uninterrupted view of the Milky Way, Sedona is one of the best locations for stargazing in the United States. In this article, I’ll discuss where to go for the best stargazing in Sedona. Along with recommending the best places to stargaze in Sedona, I’ve included some tips for things to do while you’re enjoying this unique experience.

Note: for a more comprehensive look at what the area offers, check out my guide: Unique Things to Do in Sedona.

Table of Contents

What makes sedona stargazing so exceptional, international dark sky community designation.

Sedona has been designated as a Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association, which means that the city has taken steps to limit light pollution and preserve the night sky. The prestigious Dark Sky Community Designation acknowledges that Sedona and the surrounding area is an ideal location for star gazing, with many places to go in and around Sedona offering uninterrupted views of the night sky.

The dark-sky preservation movement has been instrumental in encouraging awareness of the harmful effects of artificial light and establishing preserves, primarily in National Parks, for future generations to experience a lack of light pollution, much as the ancients did.

The unique red rock formations

Sedona’s red rock formations make great backdrops for stargazers at various locations. The red rocks reflect the light of the stars and add to the overall beauty as you enjoy the night sky. It’s a unique and beautiful experience that you won’t find anywhere else.

milky way

The Milky Way visibility

Its location in the Verde Valley means Sedona is the perfect place for an incredible evening of stargazing. It offers one of the best opportunities in the world for stargazing in that you can frequently see the Milky Way with your naked eye. The Milky Way Galaxy coils inward from the location our own solar system occupies on its outer spiral. It will certainly make you feel small to learn that we are only one of the galaxy’s more than 3000 solar systems.

This has to be one of the best stargazing experiences: star clusters, meteor showers, and other celestial objects can illuminate the Sedona night sky with a magnificent display. The Milky Way appears stunningly close, and stars appear brighter and more vivid in the clear skies.

Where are the best places to stargaze near Sedona?

Beaverhead flat scenic overlook.

best stargazing in sedona

One of the best places in Sedona to see the stars is the Beaverhead Flat Scenic Overlook. It’s located near Sedona yet away from the light of the city, and offers a fantastic view of the stars.

To get there, make your way south of Sedona and the Village of Oak Creek along the Red Rock Scenic Byway (State Highway AZ-179) and turn on Beaverhead Flats Road (78). Alternatively, you can head southwest of downtown Sedona on 89A toward Cottonwood. Take a left on E. Cornville Road (30), go through Cornville and then turn on Beaverhead Flat Road (78). The trailhead parking area is large and, with its distance from the city lights, it’s a great place for viewing the stars.

Two Trees Observation Area

Another great spot for stargazing near Sedona is the Two Trees Observing Area. This is a popular observation area located on the West Sedona Plateau. The area offers a stunning view of the night sky, with the red rocks in the background creating a beautiful contrast.

To get there, head toward Cottonwood on 89A, but turn right toward Diamonback Gulch on Forest 525 Rd. Make the approach with your lights off, and just stargaze from your vehicle. This is a wide open area with plenty of places to safely turn off. Access to Two Trees on foot requires a short hike on a dirt road, but it’s worth it for the view!

Jordan Trailhead Observing Area

Jordan Trailhead Observation Area is another one of the spots for Sedona stargazing that gets rave reviews. From the heart of Sedona, take Jordan Road north to West Park Ridge Drive and take a left. Go respectfully through the residential area to the end of West Park Ridge Drive where you’ll see the trailhead parking lot. You can actually park in one of the several parking areas set up for hikers. This location is known for its quiet and serenity, making it perfect for a peaceful evening under the stars.

What are the best stargazing tours in Sedona?

Stargazing tour companies in sedona.

If you’re not comfortable exploring Sedona’s stargazing spots on your own, choose a tour.  Sedona tour companies  offer guided tours with expert astronomer support and may provide telescopes or night vision goggles for a more in-depth view of the stars, as well as blankets for colder temperatures.
