Xian Terracotta Army Tours 2024/2025

Terracotta Warriors and Horses, also known as Terracotta Army, is one of the top cultural and historical attractions in China, and even the world. Boasting a history of over 2,200 years, the Terracotta Warriors and Horses were buried with Qinshihuang, the emperor who first unified China in history and built the first feudal dynasty – the Qin Dynasty. Till 1974, the fragments of terracotta soldiers were unearthed by chance when several local farmers were digging wells. As a result, the grand scale and large numbers of terracotta warriors and horses were found. Since then, Terracotta Warriors and Horses was listed as the top places to go for tourists’ first visit to China.

Terracotta warriors: the first emperor and his legacy 360 virtual tour (singapore).

Explore the Terracotta Warrior exhibition in Singapore for the first time in a 360 degree virtual tour, where you can see these Terracotta Warriors and other artifacts up close. We are honored to have worked on such a prestigious project. Terracotta Warriors: The First Emperor and His Legacy Featuring famed artefacts from the Shaanxi province in China, this exhibit centers on the display of the terracotta army buried near the tomb of the First Emperor of China, Shi Huangdi. The tomb itself held thousands upon thousands of these pottery warriors and horses. The striking works were crafted with precision by ancient sculptors and artists. These impressive items were discovered by accident, when local farmers were digging for water in the 1970s. Today, there is still more to be uncovered, and archeologists are continually working to reveal every detail of the buried past. The artefacts reveal a unique story of the First Emperor and his armies. At the exhibit, hundreds of artefacts are on display. In addition to terracotta warriors and horses, it includes works of bronze and jade dating back to before Shi Huangdi’s ascension. The display highlights new theories and asks interesting questions surrounding what is known about the emperor and his terracotta army. Haroko Studio was commissioned to create a 360 degree interactive virtual tour of this Terracotta Warriors exhibition. Our studio was honoured to receive this historical commission, and we have strived to create a virtual tour of the highest quality. The Challenges The challenges of shooting the virtual tour photography for this exhibition were many. There were several reflective display casings, lighting arrangements from various angles, and lots of shadows. Only through meticulous planning were we able to angle and edit our photos to eliminate any visual flaws and create a seamless experience for viewers. Interactive Exhibit Virtual Tour Navigate easily whether on a desktop or mobile device. On a desktop, click and drag your mouse to pan around. If you are on a mobile device, simply tilt or rotate your screen. A shaded box indicates a pop-up image. Simply click or tap on the shaded box to reveal the pop-up image. Clicking on the small arrow icon located on the far left of the virtual tour reveals a list of panoramas. Easily jump to any location by clicking on a panoramic image. Zoom in to take a close look at the artifact. On a desktop, simply use the + and – icon tool located at the bottom of the screen to zoom in or out. If you are on a mobile device, tap the screen with two fingers and pinch inward or outward. Click or tap the shaded box to reveal an up close image of the artefact. A closer look at one artefact. The reflective casings of the artifacts posed a challenge for photography. By using HDR photography and digital imaging know-how, we were able to make the unnecessary reflections disappear. Museum lighting is difficult because lights are positioned for optimal viewing of the exhibits through the eye, not the camera lens. This lighting results in many unwanted shadows being captured by the photographer. We used digital imaging technology to remove unnecessary shadows and recover the natural shadows of the artifact—in this case it is the Terracotta Warrior and the Horse—to create a seamless viewer experience. Quality And Details Matter To Us We put a crucial focus on the little details of every space, including shadows, reflections, highlights, and shadows. As each and every project is different, we will first meet with you and plan out our shoot in a way that will best capture and present your space, your exhibits, your property, or your work. These are the little things that will make your virtual tour standout. We are committed to creating the best virtual tour experience. How to Visit the Terracotta Army Hassle Free

The Terracotta Warriors in Xi'an are one of the must-visit attractions for all travelers to China. The dramatic exhibition reveals the secrets behind the 2,000-year-old army of clay statues that guarded the tomb of China's first emperor until a chance discovery in 1974.

  • Location: 42 kilometers (26 miles) east of Xi'an in Lintong District
  • Area: 16,300 square meters (175,000 sq. ft.)
  • Duration: 4–6 hours

Tips for visiting the terracotta army.

  • Things to See

The Best Time to See and How to Avoid Crowds

  • How to Get Your Entry Tickets

Location and How to Get There

Guide or self-guided.

1. Consider walking from the parking lot to the entrance.

The parking lot is about 1 km from the entrance. There are shared golf carts running from the parking lot to the entrance.

As you need to queue for them (in the busy travel season from May to October), we recommend you walk the 15 minutes or so there if you are able. Our guide will accompany you on the walk.

2. The Terracotta Warriors are wheelchair-friendly.

It is equipped with barrier-free access and shared golf carts running from the parking lot to the entrance.

3. The Terracotta Warriors offer free luggage storage service

It is on the east side of the ticket office. If you are planning to visit the Terracotta Warriors directly after getting off the train or plane, you could also leave your luggage in our private car.

4. Avoid scams.

For example, don't buy the book signed by the farmer who claims to be one of the discoveries of the Terracotta Army. They are all fake. Many play that role to rip off travelers. The book is over-priced at 180–200 yuan: (29–32 USD). Museum guides may recommend it to you!

5. And avoid the souvenir shops.

When you finish your visit, you have to pass an area with a lot of souvenir shops. We don't recommend you buy gifts there, as they may be overpriced. A better place to buy souvenirs is the market in Xi'an.

6. The restaurants around the museum aren't the best.

There are many tourist restaurants around the museum, but lower your expectations on taste and quality. Some even may rip you off. Our guides choose the best available restaurant for our customers.

Things to See in the Terracotta Warriors

The highlights of the Terracotta Warriors include two parts. One is the the Terracotta Army Museum. It is also the most popular visiting area. The other part is the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor.

The usual order of a Terracotta Warrior tour is to visit the museum first and then go to the Mausoleum of the First Emperor of Qin. However, during peak times like the summer season or Chinese holidays, the museum tends to get extremely crowded. In such cases, you could consider visiting the mausoleum first.

Region 1: Terracotta Army Museum

In the museum, you would see the three pits where the warriors are on display:

  • Pit 1: This is the largest and most impressive, where about 2,000 terracotta warriors are displayed.
  • Pit 2: This middle-sized pit has the most army units with archers, chariots, mixed forces, and cavalry.
  • Pit 3: It is the smallest pit and represents the command post.

Our recommended visiting sequence is Pit 1 – Pit 3 – Pit 2, as this way you will follow the Terracotta Army story from overall to detailed information (the Exhibition of Bronze Chariots has now been moved next to the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor).

There are also many exhibits showing thousands of life-size clay figures, ancient weapons, jade and gold ornaments, bronze chariot replicas...

Region 2: Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor

The best thing to see there is the Exhibition of Bronze Chariots and two pits displaying figurines in different shapes. Compared with the museum, there will be fewer tourists around, especially during the bustling holiday season, making the experience more enjoyable.

A Hand-Made Experience (Spotlight Experience Offered by Us)

To enhance your experience and a better understanding of the Terracotta Warriors, we could arrange the hands-on experience of making your own clay warriors. You could learn how these terracotta warriors were made and preserved. Your hand-made mini warriors are good souvenirs to take home.

There is very little (good English) signage, so a guide is definitely needed to explain the exhibits and help you get the most out of a visit.

You have three choices : rent an audio guide, hire a guide at the museum; or have a private guide included in your private tour (as we do).

1) Rent an audio guide (recorded guide). The cost is 40 yuan (deposit 200 yuan). The audio guide only provides limited and stilted introductions to certain parts of the museum.

2) Hire a guide at the museum . At the entrance, you'll be approached by English-speaking guides and asked if you want their services. The cost is around 150 yuan, and the quality of guidance you get varies. Try to avoid the commission shopping sites the guide may take you to.

3) Have a private guide (our recommendation). Our private Xi'an guides are picked to be the best. They will give you an expert appraisal of the Terracotta Warriors, answer your questions, navigate the crowds, and lead you to the best spots for photos.

The Terracotta Army is an indoor attraction, which is not likely to be affected by weather, so it can be visited all year round .

As the Terracotta Army Museum is one of the must-visit attractions in China, it is crowded most of the time , especially during weekends and Chinese public holidays such as National Day Holiday (October 1–7) and Labor Day Holiday (May 1–3).

To avoid crowds , we suggest that you:

  • Start your day early and try to arrive before the large bus-tour groups arrive at around 10 am. You may get extra bonus by arriving early in the morning, such as the opportunity to observe archaeologists working.
  • Or visit around noon when other visitors leave for lunch if you do not mind having a late lunch.
  • Visiting during the winter low season means fewer crowds, but the dry and cold weather is not so pleasant for Xi'an's outside attractions.

How to Get Your Entry Tickets for the Terracotta Warriors

The Terracotta Warriors Museum currently doesn't sell tickets on-site. Tickets must be bought in advance online . You can buy tickets via the Terracotta Army Museum WeChat account (秦始皇帝陵博物院) in Chinese or its official website in English by logging in.

During the off-peak season, we recommend booking tickets one week in advance. For peak seasons, please book 1 to 3 months ahead (especially during summer holidays, ensure reservations are made 3 months in advance).

The Terracotta Army is 45 km (28 mi) east of Xi'an city, taking about 1 hour by car . The most convenient way is to take a private tour . Your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel and accompany you to the Terracotta Army. Taking a taxi or public transportation is also available.

How to Get to the Terracotta Army from Beijing

Many people wonder whether it is possible to take a day tour from Beijing to the Terracotta Army. The answer is yes, but it is very rushed.

We suggest leaving 3 days in Xi'an for a relaxing travel pace. Taking a high-speed train is recommended to travel from Beijing to Xi'an. The journey is about 4-6 hours.

  • Day 1: Arrival and a food tour
  • Day 2: Visit the Terracotta Warriors
  • Day 3: Visit the Ancient City Wall and departure

Explore the Terracotta Warriors with Us

If you don't want to waste time finding a (non-con) taxi or public bus to the attraction, lining up for tickets, reading maps, making sense of Chinese signs, etc., a private tour is a great option.

It means that you will be well taken care of by a private guide and driver, and enjoy a lot of flexibility . Your guide will help you unravel the mysteries of the Terracotta Warriors, escape the crowds, and show you the best spots for photos.

  • T712CHsarahs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good dinner, mediocre show This was an add-on our tour guide, Tina, told us about earlier in the day. We went ahead and booked it with her, because it sounded interesting. The dumplings were amazing. Many varieties, all delicious. The show, however, was mediocre. It told some of the history of the Tang Dynasty, which was interesting, but the performances lacked pizzazz. We had good seats, but a tour group arrived late and was seated right in front of us. They were a continual distraction as they were served their dinner DURING the show because they had arrived so late. Overall, I'd opt for a dumpling dinner without the show if I had it to do over again. Read more Written December 11, 2019
  • jcouoh 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Interesting sight but terrible tour guide From start to finish this tour was rough. We booked through Viator which is a large company that sub contracts smaller tour companies. I am not sure what company we used but Jerry was our tour guide. We were out front of our hotel at 750 waiting for our tour guide. Apparently he came but and assumed another woman the was close by was us when she said she wasn't part of the tour. I tried calling the number on our paperwork and it just went to voicemail. Thank goodness I had we chat downloaded and the coordinator wrote and said he was waiting in the lobby. I went in and he was in the very back of the lobby on his phone sitting down hidden behind a fake tree. If I was looking for someone I would be out in the open and looking for new people in the lobby. His English was good but he had kind of an arrogant attitude. (Our opinion of course) the driver and drive was fine. When we got to the site he took us through a tour shop. I intentionally booked this tour because I did not want any shopping pressure. He proceeded to tell us that the guy who discovered the terracotta warriors is there in the morning in his store signing books and that it was a rare treat and good luck to meet him. Keep in mind this is before we have eve n seen the site. I asked if we would be exiting out this way and maybe on the way out we could stop if wasn't out of the way. He said it was along way from the exit so we dropped it and said we don't want anything. He was also eating breakfast at the store when we brought us there. I didn't appreciate the pressure and him saying it was bad luck and that we were missing out. I feel like i would have learned more from a tour book then we learned from him. The site itself is pretty profound and worth a visit. At the end we exited the site and we were hungry. We were going to buy an ice cream from one of the many vendors selling at the exit.and he told us not to buy from any of them and that he knew of a better place. After walking for 5mins we were back at the entrance and that same shop we already said we didn't want to go to. We paid probably triple price for the ice cream and felt severely dipped. Needless to say we didn't tip him and he made it apparent that he wasn't happy about it. I don't necessarily think this was a reflection on viator as a whole since we had 2 other great tours booked through them. Maybe don't use them for this specific tour or do it on your own for way cheaper and better. It is a long way from town though so you will need a ride. Read more Written August 12, 2018
  • 2011passer_by 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Day trip to Xi'an on your own I travelled solo and stayed in Xi’an from 25 to 27 November 2016, arrived by plane mid afternoon. Arrival was very fast, as I passed the immigration at international arrivals of transit airport, so the last flight counts as purely domestic. I travelled with China Southern airlines and found it a good value for money. The only downside, I could not check in online for international flight. As I had only one full day in Xi’an, I had to plan accordingly to see all the main attractions I could do in one day. If you plan to spend more time in the city, which will definitely worth it, you can see and do so much more than that! GET THERE Public transport system is good here. From the airport you can either take a public bus, or a shuttle bus (which is a minivan) to the city center. There is a couple of options depending on which part of the city you go to. As you leave the arrival area of the airport, simply find a huge info desk (you won’t miss it, it is right in front of the entrance and there is a crowd of people at it all the time) where you can see the buses and shuttles schedule and destinations. Get your tickets from there and wait to be called for boarding! These guys also offer you a city map, take it – very useful, especially if you have to go on foot to find your hotel when you get off the shuttle. STAY Plenty of options to suit any budget and expectation, starting with dormitories and ending with luxury hotels. I opted for Silk Road hostel right in the middle of the Muslim Quarter (maybe partially because I’m a foodie?), and I would say it was the best choice I could make in terms of location for the first time travel. The Muslim Quarter is easy to find once you get off the shuttle bus, and then just spot the right signage among all those food stalls! The hostel is nothing more than basic. Yet, the location made it all – as soon as you find the Muslim Quarter in Xi’an, you won’t get lost! Staff was very nice, guys actually speak English pretty well and are very helpful. A couple of big and starred hotels around the Bell tower square would make a better choice for those who seek more comfort – location is awesome really. EAT Muslim Quarter. Try everything! I mean it, it is the street food paradise. Meat skewers are a must, you’ll see lamb carcasses hanging on the trees. Soft shell crabs are so delicious. Spicy potato and tofu, and that place that does noodle soup... So I really hope you are going there for some amazing local flavours! If not, you’re really missing a lot. Starbucks is behind the corner. DO Explore the city sights. But that goes without saying! Stunning Bell and Drum towers look incredible day and night (open hours are only during the daytime though if you want to get inside). Stele Forest is a great museum, packed with stone statues and carvings, paintings that are available for sale. The street that leads to it from the South Gate of the city wall is packed with artists and handcrafts shops. I took a walk back to the Bell tower from the Stele Forest, and the night city center looks so lovely! Bicycle ride around the city wall. Single or double seater bikes, rent is for two hours plus refundable deposit. Even if you did not cycle for a while, you’ll get back in the habit quite quickly. You will pass all the gates and towers and enjoy the view of the old city as well. it is a great way to see the old town really. Terracotta Army. This is a must do when you go to Xian. In brief, take a bus, and no tour packages (could be just a waste of time, as you can really see everything in half a day at slow speed, on your own or with a guide if you need one). In more details now. Getting there is actually very easy and doesn’t have to cost you a fortune. Take a metro to Wulukou station, exit to Jiefang Road and head north, you will reach the bus terminal in some 5-7 minutes – it will be right ahead of you. You will pass a couple of big Chinese-styled hotels on both sides, that means you’re on the right way. When you reach the station, check the bus schedule on a big screen (no chance to miss it, it is outdoor). There is a couple of bus numbers, don’t be scared to take any of them – the public buses that go to terracotta army are all of bright colors, blue or green with route and major stops painted on the side. Get on one of those, pay (not more than 10 Yuan) and enjoy the ride. It will take about one hour. Once you arrive, follow the signs to the ticket office. There will be a lot of private guides offering you tours on the way, it is your choice whether you want to go for it or no, and if you do – make sure you let them know how much time you plan to spend there. I went without guides, and I explored all three pavilions in about 2 hours. That left me enough time to get back to Xi’an in the same way and the rest of the day for exploring the city. On your way back to the bus station grab a bite from one of the food stalls, you’ll see a lot on your way. I actually started the day with Terracotta Army, back to the city around one, then headed to the South Gate and went on the wall. I visited the Stele Forest after the wall and had right enough time for it, so I’d say it worked out really well for one day. OTHER TIPS Moving around the city is very easy, metro goes to all major spots you would want to visit. There is no need for taxi indeed. There is a bullet train station in the city (Xi’an North Railway, accessible by metro), which links it to other major cities and makes it very easy to get to other destinations in China. Have small bills for metro, machines do not accept bills above 20 Yuan. Carry cash, especially if you head to the food street. Not many people speak English, so a good shout is to have a translation application on mobile, many locals use it too. If you are going for basic accommodation, make sure to have a multi adapter with you, the only place where you can buy any country’s devises and stuff is Walmart. Bargain wherever you can, especially for souvenirs and especially in Terracotta Army museum. Read more Written February 13, 2017
  • MelissaRsyt 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantanstic Experience of Folk Art I had been to Xian and visited the Terracotta Warriors, the City Wall and other palces of Xi'an in 2012, this was my second time to Xian, so i took the folk art tour of Farmers' Paintings in Hu County, which turned out to be a fantanstic experience. The local people were very nice and taught me of their painting and Chinese paper cutting. My guide Sam Li did a great job of translation and introduction. Thank you for the excellent service.
