Cheap Canada Cruises - Cruises to Canada

Featured canada cruise deals, cruising guide, why cruise to canada.

Rich in maritime history, hockey culture, seafood selections and stunning fall foliage, Canada's coastal provinces are worth a visit, particularly for travelers who aren't sure where to begin touring, given the country's massive size.

The best way to see several Canadian highlights in one trip is on a cruise, where you unpack once, your accommodations travel with you and dinner awaits at the end of a fun day in port.

You'll typically see a sailing to Canada billed as a Canada/New England cruise, as most voyages include a mix of ports from both regions.

What are Popular Activities in Canada?

There's lots to see on a Canada cruise, and options abound. In Halifax, you might hop on a bus tour that touches on the port's maritime ties and hits several highlights, such as Citadel Hill and Fairlawn Cemetery, where more than 100 Titanic victims are buried.

In Charlottetown, you won't want to miss a visit to the "Anne of Green Gables" house, and if you're in Montreal at night, the Notre Dame Basilica's AURA light show is an absolute must.

When is a Good Time to Cruise to Canada?

Although Canada sailings are generally offered from May through October, autumn is the best time to go. Temperatures are cooler, and if you time it right, you can take in the breathtaking fall foliage with its fiery red, orange and yellow hues.

What are Popular Ports in Canada?

The most popular ports include Halifax, Saint John, Quebec City, Prince Edward Island's Charlottetown and Sydney. A handful of American ports -- such as Bar Harbor and Portland, Maine -- are also offered on some Canada itineraries.

Canadian ports along the west coast can also be found on Alaska itineraries, whether it's Dawson or Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory or Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia. The Canadian Rockies, including Banff National Park, make an excellent pre- or post-Alaska cruise tour on the Rocky Mountaineer train line.

Where do Canada cruises depart from?

Most Canada cruises actually begin and end in the United States, often sailing roundtrip from Boston. Other departure ports for Canada itineraries include Baltimore, New York, Bayonne and Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades in the U.S., as well as Montreal and Quebec City in Canada.

What are Tips to Find Cruise deals to Canada?

Here are our best tips for finding a cheap cruise or cruise deal to Canada. If you book a “guaranteed cabin” (they select for you), a cabin on a lower deck or sail on an older ship from a brand you like, then you can get the best price for a specific cruise to Canada. Last minute cruises deals to Canada appear as you get closer to the sail date, usually 1-2 weeks in advance. Taking a cruise to Canada in the shoulder season (before or after the peak season) can also be a great way to find a cruise deal.

Plan the ultimate cruise vacation, how can i book a cheap cruise.

If you're looking for cheap cruise deals, booking with Expedia.ca allows you to customize your search with filters that will put the best value at the top of your search results. Filters are available for various factors, including cabin experience, cruise line, destination and more. In most cases, the simpler your cruise is, the cheaper it will be. Even so, you may still find discounts on luxury cruise experiences, so don't hesitate to filter for some more high-end amenities and sort by price to see the cheapest cruises available.

Which month is the cheapest for cruises?

There is no consistent answer for the cheapest month for cruises unless you specify a destination first. With a cruise to the Caribbean , for example, the cheapest month will be around August since that's when the region undergoes hurricane season.

What happens if a cruise gets cancelled?

Every cruise operates differently, but you'll generally get a choice between a rescheduled date, a refund or cruise credits. Check the policy on your cruise before booking to learn more.

How affordable are cruise trips?

Cruise trips can be surprisingly affordable given all the features you can enjoy on them. Booking with Expedia.ca lets you filter for features like cabin experience, cruise length, cruise line and cruise ship while also sorting the results by price to ensure that you're getting the cheapest options at the top of your search results page while still meeting your search filter specifications.

What are some of the top cruise lines?

Top cruise lines include Viking cruises and Disney cruise lines. While Viking excels at luxury, Disney is among the best when it comes to family-friendly experiences. Some of the other best cruise lines include Royal Caribbean International cruises , Carnival cruises , Princess cruises and Celebrity cruises . What really qualifies as the best is more up to what you're looking to get out of your experience. For example, travelling with kids typically means a Disney cruise or something similar is the best, while budget travellers may prefer Carnival.

How much are cruise ship tickets?

Cruise prices largely depend on the kind of cruise you opt for. Cruise ship costs can be fairly affordable, with cheap cruises only charging $50 a night per person or so for some of their trips, while luxury cruises can run you upwards of $1,000 per night per person or more.

How far ahead should I book a cruise?

Cruise tickets should be bought 6 to 12 months before your cruise departure in most cases. Tickets are technically available further in advance and closer to your cruise departure date. Still, the 6- to 12-month range is generally the best way to get the best deals without missing any opportunities.

What are cruises like?

The cruise you book will have plenty to see and do before you even reach the first destination stop. The ship can be just as exciting as the destinations on your route. Cruise vacations offer food and drinks along with pools, shops and live performances in some circumstances. You may even find a cruise with a water park and a cruise with a roller coaster among particularly luxurious options.

Are cruises a useful way to travel?

Cruise travel ensures that every step of the journey is fun, with activities available between destinations, starting from your cruise terminal. While cruises may only have a single destination, some will travel to multiple spots throughout their entire duration, allowing you to enjoy locales that are just as varied as the attractions on the ship.

Which cruise line is the most affordable in 2024 / 2025?

Deals are often available for just about every cruise line, but Carnival cruises tend to be the most affordable with their Mardi Gras ship . You can also usually find cheap cruises with Royal Caribbean . When searching for a cruise, remember to sort by price to put the most affordable options at the top of your search results page.

How do I get the top cruise deals?

Start your cruise search with Expedia.ca to get the best cruise deals by using our comprehensive filters to sort through our vast collection of offerings. Expedia.ca Rewards members may even find discount cruises through their membership perks, so don't hesitate to take advantage of the free membership.

What cruise would work best for me?

If you're looking for the absolute best cruise in the world, the answer depends on what you're personally interested in experiencing. A laid-back cruise is notably different from a family-friendly cruise with its own amusement park. Take advantage of search filters to narrow down your results to cruises that work for you.

What should I keep in mind when booking a cruise?

Finding a cruise you'll be satisfied with means considering the type of cruise you want and the budget you have to work with. See what's included in the price of a ticket and what you'll have to pay extra for. If aspects like food aren't included, for example, you'll need additional funds in your budget to cover that cost.

What are some of the best cruise destinations in 2024 / 2025?

Cruises can take travellers all over the world, whether you're looking for a cruise to Alaska , a cruise to Mexico or even Antarctic cruises . Cruises to the Middle East and cruises to Australia are popular as well. Think about the kind of cruise experience you want to determine which is the best destination. If you want plenty of time on the cruise, picking a faraway destination can be useful. You also need to consider the attractions available in the destination itself.

What countries should I visit on a cruise?

The Bahamas cruises are among the most iconic cruise destinations, but the cruises to Cuba can also be lovely. Of course, countries all over the world are available. Remember that cruises may not necessarily stop in a country for all that long, so keep in mind how long your visit will actually be when considering what you want to do during your stop.

Are last-minute cruise deals available?

Last-minute cruise deals are often available, and you can check what's available by inputting your travel dates into the cruise finder on Expedia.ca. If you sort by price, the cheapest options will be listed first, including opportunities with special deals applied.

Are there all-inclusive cruises?

Yes, all-inclusive cruises are available and quite popular, and you can find them by using the search filter for all-inclusive. Celebrity cruises and Royal Caribbean cruises , for example, both offer all-inclusive packages.

Is food included with a cruise ticket?

Whether or not food is included in your cruise depends on your booking details. You can check to see what exactly is included with the ticket by checking the ‘What's included’ section of the cruise summary page after clicking it from your search results.

Are there adults-only cruise lines?

Some lines are adults only, including Viking cruises , though Carnival cruises and Princess cruises have options for adults-only cruises as well. With an adults-only cruise, you can immerse yourself in a peaceful and tranquil environment designed to make it easy to sit back and relax.

What kind of luxury cruise lines are there?

Luxury cruise lines include ships like the Caribbean Princess from Princess cruises , along with pretty much anything that Viking cruises have available. With luxury cruises, you can expect high-end amenities and a variety of things to see and do on the ship, such as shopping, dining, live performances, pools and even theme parks.

What family cruises are best suited for kids?

Disney cruises go above and beyond to offer fun cruises for kids and adults alike, but some cruises, like MSC cruises , have special promotions that allow children to get booked for free. Think of Disney cruises as having a Disney theme park on a ship with rides, shows and attractions for the whole family to enjoy.

Which lines offer the best cruises for couples?

Romantic experiences are easy to enjoy with Viking Cruises and Holland America Line cruises . The latter's Koningsdam Cruise is complemented by truly stunning views among breathtaking natural features. River cruises tend to be some of the most romantic, with more stops in historic romantic cities for you and your partner to enjoy.

Why should I go on a cruise for my honeymoon?

A cruise is one of the best ways to spend your honeymoon, as you and your partner can enjoy pampering at spa facilities with fine dining too. You can check what special features are available on every cruise on Expedia.ca in the ‘What's included’ section of their summary page.

Do cruises run around Christmas?

Yes, several cruises operate during Christmas, and you can find them by entering travel dates around Christmas to see what's available for a 2024 cruise to finish out the year. Carnival and Disney both offer special Christmas cruises with special activities and features centred around the holiday theme.

Is it worth going on a river cruise?

River cruises offer a bit of a different experience from ocean cruises, as they tend to have more stops and more varied sights to see. Viking river cruises are among the best available, as they got their start doing river cruises, making them have extensive experience with river journeys.

Are passports required for cruises?

You will need a passport if the cruise travels outside of Canada, even if you're leaving from a Canadian port like cruises from Vancouver . Cruises to the US require a passport valid for at least 6 months after your return. Cruises to other international locations require the same in addition to any potential necessary visas.

What are the benefits of booking a cruise with Expedia.ca?

When you book with Expedia.ca, you'll have access to an expansive catalogue of cruise options and search filters that allow you to narrow down those results as you see fit based on the destination, length, itinerary, cruise line and more. Additionally, Expedia.ca Rewards members accrue points on eligible purchases and other perks that can be put towards subsequent trips. Membership is free, so feel free to join and reap the benefits.

Welcome to Canada

Canada is a country that feeds the souls of nature lovers and provides a depth of thinking to those culturally curious. From the rock candy mountains of Western Canada, to the sparkling European-flavored capital cities of the east, this is a destination we behold in our roots and continued to be inspired by.

Experiencing the best of eastern canada.

In Canada's eastern provinces, our ninety plus years of experience means introducing you to the breathtaking coastal landscapes of Nova Scotia's Cabot Trail. Or taking a cruise to feel the mists of Niagara Falls. It's about indulging in a Celtic "kitchen party" on Cape Breton Island and a cider tasting in Quebec. It includes rug-making and scallop traditions in the Maritimes, visiting Anne of Green Gables' backyard on Prince Edward Island, an evening at the Citadel in Halifax, and many more regional experiences in Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime Provinces.

Welcome to Western Canada

West and north of Canada's cosmopolitan capital cities lies some of the most beautiful scenery in the world, protected in stunning national parks dressed in jeweled lakes, iced mountains and wilderness playgrounds. Experiencing it with Tauck means stays in grand resorts, eye-opening walks on the wild side, and insights that inspire your daily discoveries. Whether you're exploring an icy glacier, peering at polar bears, flightseeing over the Gulf Islands or taking in the sights by rail, river raft, or from atop a lookout in the Canadian Rockies, Tauck's expert perspectives enrich the view.

Toronto, Ontario

Immersing in the multicultural mix of canada's largest city.

On the northwestern edge of Lake Ontario, Canada's largest city – Toronto, Ontario – offers a vibrant mix of markets, museums, green parks, great food, drink and jazz. With Tauck, a stay at one of the city's most popular hotels puts you at the center of it all...

Traverse the Welland Canal

A marvel of engineering two centuries in the making....

Comprising eight locks that enable ship traffic to travel between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario by bypassing the Niagara River and Niagara Falls, the Welland Canal is a 200-year engineering marvel that actually represents four successive canals. Originally designed and built in the 1820s, a second canal replaced it in the late 1840s, and a third opened in 1887. The construction on the fourth and current Welland Canal – which your ship on "Cruising the Great Lakes" will traverse in about 11 hours, accompanied by an expert guide – began before World War I was not completed until 1932 and expanded some 40 years later.

Whether you are cruising on a mega-ship loaded with adrenaline-pumping activities, or a small vessel lavishing intimate vibes, these tips will help you get the most out of your trip.

Don’t grab the first deal you see on the internet, the best deals can often be had by booking directly with the cruise line, or with a travel agent. If space exists, both may potentially add a room upgrade, perhaps with a balcony, or a booking bonus. Booking bonuses are onboard “free cash” credits to spend on extras including: Wi-Fi, shore excursions, specialty dining, beverage packages, spa treatments, onboard shopping, or special activities like culinary classes.

If your itinerary visits foreign ports of call, it’s worth checking with individual country consulates for visa requirements. It’s possible the cruise line may cover visa requirements for the ship’s guided excursions, but not if you venture out independently.

Plan to arrive early

It’s worth arriving a day early at your embarkation point, even if it is in North America. Most cruise lines start boarding around noon and depart around the dinner hour. If your flight is delayed, the ship will not wait for you. You may need to arrange a flight or ground transportation to meet the ship at the next port at your own expense.

If you’ve bought the flight inclusive air-sea package, the cruise line bears responsibility to get you to the next port. If several air-sea passengers are delayed, the ship may postpone the departure. After booking, note your ship’s toll-free emergency number in case you have to inform them of a delay.

Think of the extra day as an extension of your holiday, a pre-holiday holiday if you will.  You’ve paid for that first cruise day. Enjoy it to the max, feeling rested and raring to go. You’ll appreciate the day to unwind, perhaps take a walk or use the time to explore the port city. For example: for the Port of Miami, explore South Beach, or stroll through colourful Wynwood Walls, Miami’s street art museum.

If your cruise departs overseas, arriving two or three days early allows you to get over any jet lag, while giving you time to explore a new country. It’s worth considering the cruise line’s pre-cruise packages, as they include transfers from the airport to a well-situated hotel with full breakfast, a guided city tour, plus transfers to the cruise ship, and back to the airport after the cruise. For a recent Viking cruise on the Seine River, my Paris pre-cruise package – which originally seemed pricey – proved economical. In the height of the season, my package cost less than I would have paid for the same hotel room alone.

First things first

As soon as possible after booking, sign in to the cruise line’s reservation system or mobile app. This allows you to pre-book your preferred options.

The most desirable activities book up quickly. These may include specialty restaurant reservations, art or culinary classes, theatre productions, excursions, or once-in-a-lifetime experiences including submarine dives or helicopter flight-seeing. When it comes to excursions, book your top choices as soon as possible. For example, if you dream of visiting Rome on a Mediterranean cruise that stops in Civitavecchia, don’t chance missing out on your preferred guided excursion or a shuttle to the city centre.

While the ship’s app may have a calendar to peg your choices, it’s helpful to print out a simple calendar based on the cruise itinerary, noting the ship’s departure time from each port.

Book your boarding time as soon as possible to maximize your first day on board.

Research port excursions and activities

Research each port before booking the cruise line’s excursions. While excursions may be pricey, they can be time efficient. For example, Barcelona is easily explored independently, but if you’re keen to understand Gaudi’s architectural influence, the paid excursion takes you from place to place for a comprehensive view.

Independent touring may be best if you have specific interests in nature, culture, or history. Consider booking a private guide ahead of the voyage. Two companies with credible reputations for their English-speaking guides are ToursByLocals and Viator.

If you explore independently note the cruise departure time. Before taking a taxi to a remote area, ensure you can get a ride back.

Embarkation day – Let the fun begin

At the cruise terminal, prepare to show your passport, cruise ticket, pre-printed boarding pass, and credit card for onboard expenses. Be aware of the currency used for onboard charges. Most cruise lines charge in US dollars while some Europe-based ships (including Explora Journeys) may charge in Euros.

Your room may not be ready, so bring a bag with swimsuit, hat, suntan lotion, and your needs for the day. Your suitcase will be wisked away by porters. So, keep with you all essentials including medications, valuables, smart phone, and other technology.

After boarding, you will find lunch served in various locations, including the main pool deck.

Boarding time is when many people rush to book excursions, spa treatments, specialty restaurants, art or culinary classes, and – for mega-ships – reserve seating for theatre productions and ice shows. If you haven’t done so before boarding now is the time.

If you miss getting dinner reservations in a special Asian, French, Italian or steakhouse restaurant, try lunch, which is usually cheaper anyway. Spa treatments and access to the thermal suite – which may have a sauna, ice room and therapeutic pool – are most popular on sea days. If you’re budget conscious, wait to check the ship’s daily rosters for discount deals, usually given on port days.

Beverage packages

Before sailing, consider your drinking habits. Aside from all-inclusive cruises, most lines offer various packages including spirits, wine, beer and/or artisan coffee and tea. Unless you anticipate drinking a lot, you may be better off paying per drink. While it’s easy to flash your room card for a drink, you can economize by visiting self-serve stations for included water, juices, tea and regular coffee. Or enjoy your libations when discounted at happy hour specials.

Read the fine print

Unless your cruise is totally all-inclusive, beware of hidden costs, such as gratuities for beverages and spa services, or charges to access therapeutic pools, fitness classes or adult sundecks. Check your chits, especially for drinks or spa services, which may inconspicuously include a space for “optional” or second tip.

Wi-Fi communications at sea

Whatever your roaming package, use the ship’s Wi-Fi plan. Put your phone on airplane mode before boarding and sync to the cruise ship’s Wi-Fi. Leave it that way throughout the cruise, as even a second of satellite transmission may cause huge fees. Onboard Wi-Fi plans usually allow email, calling, social media, and internet surfing. The trick to saving pricey internet time is to create and save all the emails you want to send in a note or document file while offline. Then after you do log on, copy and paste the information into the email for a quick “send.”

Savvy packing

Check the dress code. Ensure you have layers and gear for the anticipated excursions. All ships have launderettes or laundry services. If you like to rinse favourite items in the sink, pack a plastic hanger or two to give them shape while drip drying.

Though it sounds tedious, bring everything you may possibly need: camera batteries, sunscreen, moisturizer, Tylenol, aspirin, Band-Aids, allergy medicine, lozenges, seasickness pills, plus emergency antidotes for constipation or diarrhea. Such items are pricey on board. With new ecology sustainability measures: some cruise lines no longer supply shower caps, or body lotion. Most of all, pack your patience and a smile.

Best Canada and New England cruise excursions

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

The cruise season in Canada and New England may be brief — most ships visit between July and October — yet tour opportunities for everything from historical immersion to outdoor adventure abound. The best Canada and New England cruise excursions are as varied as the states and provinces you’ll visit.

Options include Revolutionary War landmarks in Boston, whale watches in New Brunswick’s Bay of Fundy, “Anne of Green Gables” lore on Prince Edward Island and atmospheric old towns in French-speaking Quebec. And, of course, you’ll find plenty of scenic drives, walks and boat trips to admire the gorgeous fall foliage from late September to late October.

Whether you prefer vibrant cities, charming coastal hamlets or unspoiled natural landscapes, New England and Canada cruises offer access to all three. If your tour does not include snacks, make sure to save time to taste the region’s iconic treats — lobster rolls, clam chowder and all things maple. No matter which tour you choose, remember to dress for changeable weather and wear comfortable but sturdy shoes.

Here are the best Canada and New England cruise excursions to introduce you to all the region has to offer.

  • $ Inexpensive (less than $70)
  • $$ Moderate ($70-$140)
  • $$$ Expensive ($140-$200)
  • $$$$ Very expensive (more than $200)

Newport, Rhode Island

Grand mansions and newport highlights tour.

The excesses of the Gilded Age live on in Newport’s magnificent landmark mansions, which were “summer cottages” built by the Astors, Vanderbilts, Morgans and other titans of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Book a tour to step inside one of these impressive homes.

Most tours include a panoramic bus ride through the scenic Ocean Drive historic district, where sights include the Tennis Hall of Fame and Trinity Church. Next, along Bellevue Avenue, you’ll admire elegant mansions and the Gothic-style St. Mary’s Church, where John and Jacqueline Kennedy married in 1953.

You’ll finish your tour with a visit to a historic mansion. Examples include The Elms, modeled after an 18th-century French chateau and built in 1901, and Rosecliff, designed by architect Stanford White and completed in 1902.

Important to know: Most mansion excursions last two and a half hours and combine easy sightseeing by bus with a walking tour of a mansion. Many mansion tours are self-guided and require you to download the Newport Mansions app to your smartphone and listen to the audio tour with earbuds.

Newport Cliff Walk and The Breakers

If you prefer to sightsee by foot and love oceanfront vistas, a Newport Cliff Walk and The Breakers excursion will put you center stage. You can admire Narragansett Bay on one side and the famed mansions of Newport on the other.

While the entire Cliff Walk spans 3.5 miles along the scenic coastline, this guided excursion typically covers just 1.25 miles as you pass the backyards of some of Bellevue Avenue’s most celebrated mansions. The walk ends with a tour of The Breakers, an Italian Renaissance palazzo built in 1895 by Cornelius Vanderbilt II. It features 70 rooms, 27 fireplaces and a central Great Hall with a 50-foot ceiling.

Important to know: Most Cliff Walk and The Breakers excursions last three hours. The Cliff Walk is flat and paved in this section, but comfortable footwear is a must since this tour involves more than two hours of walking and standing.

Boston, Massachusetts

Freedom trail walking tour.

Do you love American history? Will you be cruising with school-age kids? A port call in Boston offers a chance to learn about major historic events, such as when the colonies battled for independence from England almost 250 years ago.

A guided walking tour along the city’s famed Freedom Trail lets you discover 16 historical sites. These include Boston Common, the Massachusetts State House, the Old South Meeting House (where a gathering sparked the Boston Tea Party in 1773) and the Old North Church. The latter is where Paul Revere placed two lanterns to signal that the British were approaching by sea during his midnight ride on April 18, 1775.

Important to know: Freedom Trail walking tours generally last three and a half hours and cover a distance of 2 to 2.5 miles at a moderate pace. The walk generally ends near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, so you might have time to explore on your own before returning to your ship.

Fenway Park and Boston highlights tour

Love ’em or hate ’em, the Boston Red Sox play in one of baseball’s most celebrated stadiums: Fenway Park. Book this popular New England cruise excursion, and you’ll find yourself among some of the sport’s most dedicated fans. All will be eager to step inside the oldest stadium in the major leagues, built in 1912.

You’ll see the dugouts, the press box, the manually operated scoreboard, Pesky’s Pole in right field and the 37-foot-tall left-field wall known as the Green Monster. On your way to and from Fenway, you’ll also take in some of Boston’s top historic sites from inside your bus with guided commentary.

Important to know: Family-friendly Fenway Park and Boston highlights tours are generally three and a half hours and involve some walking within the stadium. Tours do not include an actual game, and some areas may be off limits due to activity within the stadium.

Aside from its lobster, Maine is perhaps best known for the lighthouses that dot its rugged coastline. This sightseeing tour showcases a picturesque landmark that has long protected sailors from meeting a tragic end, along with several popular Portland neighborhoods.

After enjoying a bus tour through downtown Portland — home to Victorian houses and a modern Arts District — you’ll drive along the scenic coast to Portland Head Light, Maine’s oldest lighthouse. Sitting in the onetime military outpost of Fort Williams, the Instagram-worthy landmark dates to 1791 and features beautiful grounds; there’s also a museum in the lighthouse keeper’s quarters.

Important to know: These scenic tours are generally two hours, and much of that time is spent on the bus. The museum entrance fee ($2) is not always included in the tour cost.

Kennebunkport

Price: $$-$$$

Exploring Kennebunkport is a popular daytrip from Portland. Cruise lines offer several shore excursions to this charming seaside village, perhaps best known as the summer residence of former President George H.W. Bush and first lady Barbara Bush.

Shorter excursions focus on the town’s 18th- and 19th-century sea captains’ mansions and offer free time to explore independently. They may also include a scenic sailing (the best way to have a look at the Bush compound at Walker’s Point).

Longer tours combine bus sightseeing with a scenic cruise, a clam chowder and lobster roll lunch, and free time to browse Kennebunkport’s shops and galleries.

Important to know: Kennebunkport is approximately a 45-minute drive from Portland, and excursions range from three to seven hours. If you plan to shop, ask the shore excursion desk how much free time will be allotted.

Bar Harbor, Maine

Acadia national park.

Your cruise line is likely to offer a variety of excursions that explore Acadia National Park, the coastal preserve known for its 3,478 miles of shoreline and the 360-degree panoramic views from atop 1,530-foot Cadillac Mountain.

The easiest excursions involve sightseeing from a bus (or an executive minicoach on a small-group tour) and generally cover the 27-mile Loop Road and/or coastal highlights. The most strenuous involve hikes or bike rides. Another option is an excursion that combines a Loop Tour in Acadia with an authentic lobster bake lunch.

Important to know: Acadia National Park tours range from two to four hours and the visibility from atop Cadillac Mountain depends on weather conditions. Additionally, the park regulates the number of buses allowed to stop atop the mountain, so in September and October (foliage season) tour buses are not always allowed there.

Kayaking in Frenchman Bay

Active, outdoors-loving cruisers can opt to paddle the waters surrounding Mount Desert Island, considered one of the top sea kayaking spots on the East Coast.

Local outfitters provide stable tandem (two-person) kayaks; you’ll be instructed on how to perfect a fluid stroke and glide past the scenic coastline off of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Keep your eyes open for local residents, such as harbor seals, porpoises and bald eagles.

Important to know: Kayaking tours typically last two and a half to three hours and are considered a strenuous excursion. Anyone in good physical condition (upper body strength is key) can participate, and beginners are welcome. You’ll hear instructions from a professional guide and get a dry bag.

Saint John, New Brunswick

Whale watching by zodiac on the bay of fundy.

From June to October, the Bay of Fundy is home to hundreds of finback and minke whales; humpbacks arrive in late summer. So, a port call here offers an opportunity to view these magnificent creatures as they feed and play.

The Zodiacs (some tours also use larger vessels or catamarans) depart from Saint Andrews, about 75 minutes from Saint John. You have a 90% or greater chance of spotting whales as you zip around the bay for two hours. You might also see seals, porpoises and eagles. Most tours allow you free time to explore the picturesque seaside town of Saint Andrews, and some include a snack or lunch — typically seafood chowder.

Important to know: Whale watching by Zodiac tours are generally six or seven hours long, and the Zodiacs do have fixed chairs (some with shock absorption). This makes them suitable for most adults without major back or mobility issues and older children (generally ages 9 and above).

Reversing Falls, St Martins sea caves and the Bay of Fundy

Fallsview Park’s dynamic reversing rapids are a must-see when visiting Saint John. Your cruise line will likely offer a variety of Bay of Fundy tours, but look for one that combines a visit to the park with a drive to the small town of Saint Martins.

The Reversing Rapids is what happens when the Saint John River meets the strong and dramatic tides of the Bay of Fundy. The exchange of water flowing into the bay at low tide and back from the bay at high tide creates a series of rapids and whirlpools.

The highlight in Saint Martins is the Sea Caves, dramatic formations carved into the red-hued cliffs by the tides. You’ll walk along the pebble-strewn beach — and even into the cave entrances if your visit is at low tide — and afterward enjoy a hearty bowl of seafood chowder. Saint Martins is also home to several covered bridges and gift shops. Before returning to your ship, you’ll visit the circa-1876 Old City Market in Saint John.

Important to know: Saint Martins is about 70 minutes from Saint John and tours generally last five to six hours. The sights you’ll see are dependent on the daily tide schedules and the weather (fog is not uncommon). While this is a moderate activity, some walking is involved, especially to reach the sea caves from the rocky beach.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Peggy’s cove.

Peggy’s Cove, a coastal village dating back to 1811, has inspired numerous painters and photographers. It’s also a popular Canadian cruise excursion destination.

Your ship will likely offer several different excursions here, from a scenic coastal drive and tour to a longer option that allows time to savor a delicious lobster lunch and explore the town’s shops and galleries on your own. A highlight is the circa-1914 lighthouse set atop an impressive rocky outcropping. Back in Halifax, some tours also do a drive-by of Province House, where the Nova Scotia House of Assembly has gathered every year since 1819.

Important to know: Excursions to Peggy’s Cove range from three to seven hours. The drive from Halifax is about an hour each way, which means shorter tours offer very little time to actually explore the town.

Halifax Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus tour

Prefer to sightsee at your own pace? If so, book a tour that lets you utilize Halifax’s hop-on, hop-off vintage double-decker buses to explore the sights on its 90-minute loop.

The bus will take you to the Public Gardens, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the fashionable North End shopping district and the Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where 121 passengers who perished on the Titanic in April 1912 are laid to rest. Some cruise lines also add extras, such as fast-pass access to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic — home to some Titanic memorabilia — and Citadel Hill National Historic Site — a star-shaped fortress constructed in 1856.

Important to know: Buses run every 30 minutes, so plan your stays at the various sights carefully to avoid wasting precious port time.

Sydney, Nova Scotia

Cape breton island.

Nova Scotia’s rich Scottish-Gaelic history and culture come to life during a visit to Cape Breton Island. The area is in eastern Nova Scotia and is encircled by a roadway called the Cabot Trail.

Tours from Sydney, the island’s largest city, vary by cruise line. Still, highlights include the Bras d‘Or Lakes region, which is home to Highland Village — a cultural center and living history museum dedicated to early Gaelic settlement in Nova Scotia. You’ll also visit Baddeck village, the birthplace of Alexander Graham Bell, and can visit a museum that showcases his life and inventions.

Explore Baddeck’s shops and cafes on foot; then make a final stop at Seal Island for a photo-op atop Kelly’s Mountain overlooking Saint Ann’s Bay.

Important to know: Canada cruise excursions to Cape Breton last between four and seven hours, with a one-hour drive each way from and to the port in Sydney. A fair amount of walking is required, especially in Highland Village. Longer tours typically include lunch.

Fortress of Louisbourg

History buffs with a penchant for live reenactments can enjoy a guided excursion to the Fortress of Louisbourg, North America’s largest reconstructed 18th-century French fortified town.

The original fortress was built from 1720 to 1740 and once ranked as France’s most important military and trade center on the continent. The entire 12-acre complex, now a Canadian National Historic Site, is home to more than 50 period buildings. A wide range of characters dressed in mid-18th-century garb offer historical context as they reenact everyday life from almost 300 years ago.

Important to know:   The Fortress of Louisbourg is about 45 minutes away from Sydney. Excursions less than four hours may not offer enough time (just 30 to 45 minutes) to explore the complex independently after the guided tour ends. This excursion involves a significant amount of walking.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Anne of green gables.

There are many reasons to visit Prince Edward Island, including its beach-fringed national parks and fresh-from-the-sea cuisine. But perhaps the biggest tourist draw, especially for literary enthusiasts, is Anne of Green Gables — the character created by PEI native Lucy Maud Montgomery in her series of books for young readers.

Feisty Anne, with her red pigtails and straw bonnet, remains beloved more than a century after her literary debut. Most cruise lines offer a variety of excursions to the place that inspired Montgomery, a farm estate now known as Green Gables Heritage Place. In addition to a museum that chronicles Montgomery’s life and literary works, this Canada National Historic Site encompasses the farm and surrounding woodlands that inspired the author.

Important to know: Tours are generally four to seven hours. If you’re a tried-and-true Anne fan, ensure the tour you book allows enough time to explore both the museum and grounds at Green Gables Heritage Place, about 40 minutes from Charlottetown. If your port call is long enough, you might also be able to book separate tickets for “Anne & Gilbert, The Musical,” staged in Charlottetown from late May to early October.

Charlottetown culinary tour

Charlottetown is an atmospheric spot to take a foodie walking tour and sample a variety of local specialties. On the menu: oysters, mussels, lobster rolls, french fries made with local PEI potatoes, craft beer and more. Tip: If you’re not completely full, stop at Cows to sample the local ice cream — and buy a bag of Cow Chips (chocolate-covered potato chips) to savor later.

Important to know: Foodie tours generally last about three hours and require you to walk about two miles.

Quebec City, Quebec

A stroll through old town.

You’ll feel like you’ve been transported back hundreds of years and across the Atlantic to France as you explore the photogenic streets of Quebec City’s Old Town with your guide.

Founded in 1608 by French explorer Samuel de Champlain, this UNESCO World Heritage Site charms visitors. Highlights include Lower Town’s Place Royale, the city’s first settlement, and Le Quartier Petit-Champlain, its first shopping street.

In Upper Town, you’ll explore sites that include the Place d’Armes, Dufferin Terrace and Place de l’Hotel de Ville, all while being mesmerized by the towering Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac. On some tours, you’ll head inside this landmark hotel — constructed in 1893 and inspired by the castles of France — for afternoon tea and pastries. Other strolls conclude with a wine tasting.

Important to know: These walking tours are generally about three hours across hilly and cobblestoned streets.

Montmorency Falls

Just 20 minutes from Quebec City in the rural Island of Orleans, known for its photogenic villages, Montmorency Falls cascades 270 feet down a cliff face into the Saint Lawrence River. The drop is one and a half times that of Niagara Falls.

Some tours here visit the base of the falls for a photo op, while others include a tram ride to the top for spectacular close-up views from a suspension bridge. Some Montmorency excursions also combine a visit to Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, a late-19th-century basilica considered one of the top Catholic shrines in North America. Others stop at a sugar shack where you can sample maple candy and other treats.

Important to know: Tours to Montmorency Falls are typically three to four hours long.

Old Montreal walking tour

Montreal, the second-largest French-speaking city in the world after Paris, is also home to an atmospheric cobblestoned Old Town. This must-see neighborhood is known as Vieux-Montreal and dates to the city’s founding in 1642.

Here, you’ll find the landmark Place d’Armes and the neo-Gothic Notre-Dame Basilica (its interior is awash in heavenly blue). There’s also the Place Jacques-Cartier, lined with cafes. The adjacent Old Port, which stretches along the Saint Lawrence River, is a vibrant mix of historic and modern buildings.

Some Old Montreal walking excursions combine top sites with a culinary tour that can include tastes of everything from French pate and cheese to smoked meats and Portuguese natas (puff pastry).

Important to know: Walking tours of Old Montreal are usually two and a half to three hours in length, with most of that time spent on your feet.

Montreal highlights city tour

If walking tours aren’t your thing, you can also get a great overview of Montreal via a bus excursion that visits many of the city’s architecturally dynamic neighborhoods.

Notable spots include Old Montreal and Notre-Dame Basilica, the city’s modern downtown business district, leafy 500-acre Mount Royal Park, Golden Square Mile with its historic Victorian and Renaissance homes, and the east side with its iconic Olympic Stadium.

Important to know: City tours by bus generally last three hours and are mostly panoramic, meaning you’ll spend as much as two-thirds of your time on the bus. There might be three or four stops for photos and a quick visit to Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal.

Public health reference tool for cruise ship operators

On this page, cruise travel and public health, communicable disease resources, common communicable diseases, other communicable diseases, public health measures, other risk mitigation resources.

This public health reference tool compiles references to Canadian public health resources on communicable disease prevention. This information is being provided to cruise ship operators for general awareness purposes only. Resources shared as part of this tool are not industry-specific and guidance may need to be adapted to suit the context of a cruise ship.

The information in this tool is valid at the time of publication. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) will periodically review this webpage and make updates, as needed. It is good practice for cruise ship operators to regularly monitor current Canadian public health news, recommendations and regulatory requirements. This tool does not provide medical or legal advice. For more information:

  • Public Health Agency of Canada
  • List of Acts and Regulations

Cruise travel can pose various risks for the transmission of communicable diseases:

  • through person-to-person contact, including from the spread of respiratory particles due to coughing, sneezing or speaking (i.e., through direct transmission)
  • through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects, through airborne transmission, or through contaminated food and/or drinking water (i.e., through indirect transmission)

Cruise ship operators can mitigate risks of communicable disease transmission by:

  • applying appropriate public health measures against communicable diseases like COVID-19, influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and noroviruses
  • ensuring that planning and procedures are in place to manage outbreak situations

An effective public health framework can help protect the health of passengers and crew and minimize the risk of onward disease transmission during port visits.

The Government of Canada publishes disease-specific guidance and information that can help operators identify preventive strategies and mitigate risks. Links to resources on the prevention of communicable diseases in the context of cruise travel are shared below, including information on respiratory infectious diseases and gastrointestinal illness.

This section also includes links to infection control guidelines for communicable diseases that are less common. It is not intended to be a comprehensive representation of public health risks on board cruise ships.

For vaccine-preventable diseases, industry health professionals can also refer to the Canadian Immunization Guide for more information on recommendations for the immunization of travellers.

For further information:

Respiratory infectious diseases

Outbreaks of respiratory infectious diseases can occur at any time of the year on cruise ships. It is common for some respiratory infectious diseases to co-circulate on a seasonal cycle, including:

  • Influenza (flu)
  • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

Some respiratory infectious diseases of concern do not follow a seasonal cycle, such as:

Gastrointestinal illness

The sharing of a common food and water supply in the semi-enclosed setting of a cruise ship can lead to disease outbreaks. Cruise ship crew or passengers may present symptoms of acute gastrointestinal (GI) illness prior to and during a voyage, often diagnosed as a norovirus infection. Noroviruses are very contagious viruses that cause diarrhea and vomiting.

To learn more:

  • Norovirus: Symptoms and treatment
  • Mpox (monkeypox)

Clusters of mpox (monkeypox) cases have been reported in non-endemic countries. The majority of the cases reported outside of endemic areas have been in those who have had close or intimate contact with a person who has mpox. This disease is caused by a viral infection, and the most commonly presenting symptom is a rash.

Vector-borne diseases

Diseases can also be spread from one animal to another (e.g., humans) through an intermediary or vector – typically, a biting insect or tick. Mosquitos are a common disease vector, and can spread diseases such as:

  • Dengue fever
  • Chikungunya
  • Yellow fever

Resources for preventing the spread of communicable diseases

This section provides references to Government of Canada resources on public health measures and other best practices that can be applied in cruise ship settings – e.g., against respiratory infectious diseases and gastrointestinal illnesses. The information on public health measures shared below is not intended to be exhaustive.

Hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette measures

Making health promotion materials (e.g., videos, audio, factsheets, and infographics) available throughout the ship can provide those onboard with instructions and reminders for hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette (i.e., covering coughs and sneezes and wearing a respirator or mask when symptomatic or in settings that are small, crowded, or poorly ventilated).

The Government of Canada has published guidance and health promotion material on hand hygiene:

  • Hand washing and staying healthy
  • Reduce the spread of COVID-19: Wash your hands infographic
  • Reduce the spread of COVID-19: Wash your hands (video)

  • COVID-19 mask use: How to make your mask fit properly
  • COVID-19 mask use: How to choose, use and care for a mask
  • COVID-19 mask use: Advice for community settings

Cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces and objects

Environmental sanitation practices are important to reduce the risk of communicable diseases on board cruise ships. The routine cleaning and disinfection of surfaces and objects that are frequently touched can remove or kill infectious particles that cause disease, reducing the risk of illness transmission through contact with contaminated materials.

The Government of Canada has published guidance on cleaning and disinfection, including information specific to passenger conveyances and to COVID-19.

  • Environmental sanitation practices to control the spread of communicable disease in passenger conveyances and terminals
  • Surface disinfectants for emerging viral pathogens
  • COVID-19: Cleaning and disinfecting

Safe food handling

Following general food safety practices can also help prevent the spread of enteric and food-borne diseases. The Government of Canada provides information on general food safety practices. To learn more:

  • Food safety

Indoor ventilation

Taking steps to maintain and improve indoor ventilation can help prevent the airborne transmission of communicable disease in specific locations. Routine maintenance of HVAC systems will contribute to the reduction in levels of infectious particles.

The Government of Canada has published a COVID-19-specific factsheet and guidance on indoor ventilation.

  • COVID-19: Improving indoor ventilation
  • Factsheet: Ventilation helps protect against the spread of COVID-19
  • COVID-19: Guidance on indoor ventilation during the pandemic

Outbreak management plans

An effective outbreak management plan includes specific activation triggers, and corresponding public health measures that can help contain the spread of communicable disease. Establishing programs for drills and exercises can help with preparedness for some outbreak situations. Including protocols for identifying and informing passengers of possible exposure to illness can facilitate case management.

For communicable disease outbreak management plans, PHAC recommends referencing the following resources:

  • Reducing COVID-19 risk in community settings: A tool for operators
  • COVID-19: Prevention and Risks
  • Mpox (monkeypox): How operators can reduce the risk of spread in community settings

The Government of Canada has also published information on personal protective measures to help reduce the spread of respiratory infectious diseases, which can assist operators with the development of public health messaging as part of actions included in an outbreak management plan:

  • Respiratory infectious diseases: How to reduce the spread with personal protective measures
  • Break the chain of infection: Respiratory infectious diseases

A stone slab pivotal to royal history will be the centrepiece of a new $45-million museum in central Scotland. The Stone of Destiny, an ancient symbol of the country’s monarchy, will go on display at the redeveloped former city hall in Perth. It will mark its return home to Perthshire for the first time in more than 700 years, the Dundee Courier said. In 1296, it was taken to Westminster Abbey in London by King Edward I. Used in coronation ceremonies for English and then British monarchs, it was returned to Scotland in 1996 and housed in Edinburgh Castle. But its new home at the Perth Museum will put the region again “at the centre of Scotland’s story,” as the BBC noted.

Scotland’s Stone of Destiny returns home after 700 years Back to video

It will also breathe new life into the city hall building that was at risk of demolition after being made redundant in the mid-2000s. The Stone of Destiny — also known as the Stone of Scone — formed part of the coronation chair upon which kings and queens were crowned, and was most recently featured last year during the coronation of King Charles. Its move to its new home came amid tight security.

J.P. Reid, the exhibitions manager for Culture Perth and Kinross, said: “Interestingly, it’s a live ceremonial object, so it’s back down for coronations and other ceremonial use. So, inevitably, given its back history of numerous removals in the past, the security profile is extremely high for the building. The new building itself has effectively been built around the security provision for the stone.”

Entry to the museum is free but advance booking is required to see the Stone of Destiny. Helen Smout, of the region’s culture executive, hopes the museum — its biggest cultural project in two centuries — will encourage more visitors to linger. “A lot of tourists bypassed Perth and went straight for the beautiful scenery, and people who did come here didn’t necessarily spend very long,” she said.

Singapore’s only direct flight service to and from Canada has begun as Air Canada's first flight in the new route, AC19, landed at Changi Airport on Thursday (Apr 4)  morning. T his marks the airline’s first return to Changi Airport in over 30 years.

Operated four times weekly on Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, the non-stop flight between Singapore and Vancouver takes 14 hours and 40 minutes.

This route is the airline’s longest flight measured by distance, stretching 12,818km , said Canada's national carrier.

“Changi Airport is thrilled to welcome Air Canada to Singapore. This is especially timely, as travel volume between Singapore and Canada last year has seen a healthy rebound, exceeding 85 per cent of pre-pandemic levels,” said the Executive Vice President for Air Hub & Cargo Development at Changi Airport Group, Lim Ching Kiat.

Travellers on the Singapore-Vancouver route can enjoy a choice of three cabins: Economy, Premium Economy and Air Canada Signature Class, which has lie-flat seats.

All cabins have inflight entertainment screens at every seat with hours of movies, TV shows, as well as music and podcasts.

“We welcome this new service which will grow tourism, support increased trade, and importantly, connect families and friends across the Pacific region,” said Vancouver Airport Authority President and CEO, Tamara Vrooman.
