First premiering on Broadway in 1951 , The King and I is the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that takes place in Siam (Thailand) in the 1860s. It is based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam, which is itself based on the memoirs of a British governess to the children of King of Siam, who then falls in love with the king and brings a modern sentiment to Siam.

The King and I on Broadway Background

This revival is produced by Lincoln Center Theater and goes up at their Broadway venue, the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. The clashing of two cultures where a modernized west seeks to leave their imprint on an ancient, less westernized civilization is a theme that still resonates today. The audience is transposed to 19th century Siam, thanks to the wizardry of set designer Michael Yeargan and costume designer Catherine Zuber. The play is choreographed by Christopher Gattelli but based on original choreography by Jerome Robbins. Anna Leonowens is played by Kelli O’Hara (The Bridges of Madison County, Nice Work if You Can Get It, South Pacific, The Pajama Game), and the King of Siam is played by Ken Watanabe (Inception, The Last Samurai) making his Broadway debut. The show includes such memorable songs as “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” and “Something Wonderful.”

What’s The King and I Like?

Directed by Bartlett Sher (The Bridges of Madison County, Golden Boy, South Pacific and The Light in the Piazza), this Lincoln Center revival of The King and I is a spectacularly beautiful and emotionally engaging production. Furthermore, it re-teamed Sher with Kelli O’Hara, who have worked together on several occasions. Shortly after the show's opening in 2015, O'Hara won the Tony Award for Leading Actress in a Musical and Ruthie Ann Miles won the Tony Award for an actress in a Featured Role in a Musical, both for The King and I . The classic story of the quarrelsome relationship that turns to love between Anna and the King of Siam is told brilliantly in Oscar Hammerstein II’s book, with a magnificent score by Richard Rodgers.

Is The King and I Good for Kids?

The show may be inappropriate for children aged 8 and under; children under the age of 4 are not permitted in the theatre.

Extraordinary Chaos

Review, The King And I Uk Tour 2023, The Palace Theatre Manchester

I haven’t seen a show I didn’t like in a long time. Every single time I leave the theatre thinking, that is one of my favourite shows. Because each and every production has had a merit that has me loving the theatre a little more than I ever thought possible. However Bartlett Sher’s production of the Rodgers & Hammerstein’s, The King And I is in a different league entirely.

It’s EVERYTHING I love about the theatre and more. I can’t think of another production I have seen, where I shed tears for no other reason than the beauty and nostalgia that the show conjures.

If you want to see me create my projects, follow me on Tik Tok and Instagram.

1. Annalene Beechey (Anna Leonowens)_

A Little History About The King And I

“The King and I” is a musical based on the novel “Anna and the King of Siam” by Margaret Landon. The musical tells the story of widow Anna Leonowens (Annalene Beechey) a British schoolteacher and her son Lois are hired by the King of Siam (Darren Lee) now Thailand. To teach his many wives and children English and help modernise the country.

The musical features music by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. Some of the most famous songs from the show include “Getting to Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” and “Shall We Dance?” The show originally premiered on Broadway in 1951 and has since been revived several times.

“The King and I” has also been adapted for film and television numerous times. Including a 1956 film starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr. The musical has also been performed around the world and has won multiple Tony Awards for its productions on Broadway.

As such the production has been praised for its stunning costumes and sets, as well as its portrayal of the relationship between Anna and the King. However, has also faced criticism for its portrayal of Thai culture and its historical accuracy. Despite this, “The King and I” remains a beloved classic of musical theater.

4. Darren Lee (King Of Siam)

What Is The Show About?

The King And I portrays the building relationship of Anna and The King. A man accustomed to adoration and worship from all around him. Who demonstrates power and control, yet has a vulnerability and self doubt he can not share with those who rely on him.

Anna, being such a strong independent woman, provides the King with a challenge he has never before encountered. From the moment he meets Anna she becomes somewhat of an enigma. After getting over his initial shock at Anna’s strong will and conviction, he begins to respect her intelligence and opinions.

Meanwhile Anne builds friendships and the respect of the Kings wives and many courtiers in the palace . Yet becomes a threat to some of the Kings closest advisors. Who resent how she is modernising the Kings views of the world and how he runs his Kingdom.

Annas’ teachings also gain the trust and love of the Kings children. Including the future King, Prince Chulalongkorn (Caleb Lagayan) as she educates them of a world outside Siam.

As Anna builds a relationship of mutual trust and respect with the King she starts to assist in making small but significant changes in the palace, and also of how the world sees Siam. However she can not reconcile herself with the Kings attitude to the women of the country.

This ultimately becomes a sticking point when the King stops one of the palace courtiers, Princess Tuptim (Marienella Phillips) escaping. The King is torn between punishing her and listening to Anna and becoming the modern man he so desired to become. This turmoil affects his heart and the demise of his health.

11. Yuki Ozeki ( Little Eva) The King And I Review

My Review Of The King And I

The King and I is very close to its original roots, if not identical, yet it feel fresh and new. From the starting scene as the ship rolls into port. To the spellbinding curtain that changes colour with the light, and looks so regal at times it took my breath away. And the garden courtyard scenes that although so simple are simply stunning. The costumes were the stuff of Hollywood dreams.

At times I forgot I was watching a production, I could have been curled on my sofa alone watching a huge screen. That is the power The King And I portrayed! It felt alive, theatrical, powerful and rather than a set it felt as if I was watching it on the big screen.

The King And I Review

As I took in every beautiful detail of the ‘Getting To Know You’ scene, I had to stop the tears escaping. These were not tears of sadness but joy and gratitude. That such a Hollywood great had been portrayed in a way that it made me feel exactly the same way, as the first time I ever saw the movie .

I can’t even put it into words, its a feeling in your heart of warmth, joy, nostalgia and love and that is exactly how The King And I made me feel.

The King And I is overwhelmingly beautiful in an understated way. The incredible acting and voices that had you invested into the characters as they made their entrances. It was delivered with a warm humour that had the audience laughing along and the children were just adorable. Honestly if you are going to see one show in your lifetime, let it be The King And I.

tour king and i

Gregg DeGuire/WireImage ; Joey King Instagram

Joey King is best friends with her sisters, Kelli and Hunter King .

The We Were the Lucky Ones star and her sisters were raised by their parents, Jamie and Terri King, in Los Angeles. The couple welcomed their first daughter Kelli on March 22, 1992. A little over a year later Jamie gave birth to their second daughter Hunter on Oct. 19, 1993. Six years later, Joey joined the family on July 30, 1999.

Kelli was the first King sister to dabble in acting as a child in The Christmas Path and No Problem . Hunter, too, is an actor best known for her Daytime Emmy-winning work on The Young and the Restless .

After rising to fame with her starring role alongside Selena Gomez in the family comedy Ramona and Beezus , Joey said it was always a “dream” of hers to act with Hunter. That wish became a reality in 2019 when she landed a role in the CBS comedy Life in Pieces , which her elder sister starred in.

“Hunter and I have always, always wanted to work together,” Joey told Entertainment Weekly . “We’ve talked about it countless times; it was our dream to be able to do something together.”

Off-screen the sisters have remained close. In 2023, Joey got married to director Steven Piet and both Kelli and Hunter were bridesmaids.

Here’s everything to know about Joey King’s sisters, Kelli and Hunter King.

Kelli and Hunter are both actors

Like The Kissing Booth star, Kelli and Hunter have both dabbled in acting. The eldest sister kicked off her acting career as a child when she was featured in the television series Rude Awakening and a few movies. Kelli also appeared in a 2006 episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Hunter is a five-time nominee and two-time Daytime Emmy winner for outstanding younger actress in a drama series for her work on The Young and the Restless. In 2023, she starred in the thriller Give Me Your Eyes .

Joey and Hunter have acted alongside each other

Hunter and Joey had always wanted to act alongside each other so the older sister reached out to the team behind Life in Pieces to see if there was any way Joey could make an appearance on the show.

“I [told my boss], ‘I don’t know if she even could or if you guys have something for her, but if there’s ever a chance, please have her on the show because we want to work together so bad!’ ” Hunter told Entertainment Weekly . “One day they were like, ‘Hey, we’re thinking of Joey for this character,’ and the rest is history.”

Joey and Hunter also said they would love to work together again. “Hopefully it’s a little peek into the future and we can work more together,” the younger King said. “Anyone reading this that has any kind of pull, Hunter and I wanna work together more, so put us in your s‑‑‑.”

The Golden Globe nominee even told Howard Stern that the sister duo would love to create a project about their bond.

“One of my biggest goals in my life is to make something with her,” Joey said in a 2020 interview. “We are the stupidest people when we’re together. She is my favorite person. We are so goofy and I just want to make something — either a film about it, or a limited series, or a series — just about how silly we are.”

Joey and Hunter lived together

Joey told Stern that she bought a home at the age of 16 and lived with her mom and Hunter.

“It’s nice. It’s like, you know, full all the time. It’s cozy,” she said. “I like to come home and hear that people are home. It’s nice. I find it really comforting.”

Joey also revealed that she and Hunter had a close relationship since their adolescence.

“My sister [Hunter] is the single-handed most supportive person I’ve ever met,” The Act star said. “Her and I, we’ve been best friends since we were little. Her and I just vibe. I love her so much.”

They are very close

Barry King/WireImage

It’s no secret that the King sisters have a strong relationship. For Joey's 22nd birthday in 2021, Kelli shared a heartfelt Instagram post about their bond.

"One of my greatest privileges in life is being a big sister to you and Hunter," she wrote in the caption. "You’re becoming this wonderful adult (much cooler than I was at 22!) and I can’t wait to remember more years of your life."

In June 2021, Joey and Hunter made a permanent show of their connection by getting matching ladybug tattoos on their shoulders.

Haney, the sisters' tattoo artist, posted about their new ink on Instagram and shared that Joey and Hunter also collaborated to donate money to the nonprofit A21, which has a mission of ending slavery and human trafficking.

"Thank you again to Hunter & Joey for coming in and using their platform to make awareness of victims of human trafficking. It was so lovely to meet you both!" Haney wrote.

Joey and Hunter went on a reality TV show together

Netflix / Joey King Instagram

Aside from their brief acting stint together, Joey and Hunter have also dabbled in reality TV together, appearing on Netflix’s baking show Nailed It! in 2021.

“If you desire to see me and my sister Hunter fail miserably at baking....watch NAILED IT tomorrow on Netflix🥲😂,” Joey wrote in a 2021 Instagram post promoting the series.

The sisters went through two separate baking challenges in the episode entitled “Travel Dos and Donuts.” They lost out on their first round of challenges after making saffron-flavored doughnuts but had better luck in the second round when making a hot air balloon cake.

In the end, Joey and Hunter won and donated their $10,000 prize to the UN Refugee Agency.

They were both bridesmaids in Joey’s wedding

Joey tied the knot with director Steven Piet in September 2023. Throughout the entire wedding process , Hunter and Kelli were there supporting their sister as bridesmaids.

During the destination wedding in Spain, Kelli shared a behind-the-scenes look at Joey’s special day on Instagram.

Before the ceremony, Kelli posted a video of herself and Joey toasting, captioning the post that she was "way too excited and took all the cringey older sister videos.” She went on to jokingly ask Joey the importance of the day and the Bullet Train star replied, "Oh today? It's just my wedding day!”

“My lil sis is married,” Hunter wrote in a celebratory Instagram post after Joey’s wedding. “I couldn’t be happier that these two found each other and now get to spend forever together🤍 truly the most incredible wedding for the most incredible people💍🥂.”

Joey and Hunter went to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour together

During one of the most viral stops in Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour, the singer premiered the music video for her track “I Can See You,” which featured Joey, Presley Cash and Taylor Lautner . Hunter was there for the “breathtaking experience” when her sister was brought on stage by Swift.

“It’s a very niche experience to walk out on a stage of 70,000 plus people,” Joey told CNN. “I was like, ‘Bring me on stage?’ [And Taylor] was like, ‘Didn’t I tell you?’ I was like, ‘You did not tell me I was going on stage.' ”

“I started sweating and freaking out and I got really nervous,” she added. “But it was incredible to just have that experience and feel that energy coming at you.”

Hunter shared a picture on Instagram of her and Joey at the concert in coordinating outfits.

“In our Lover and 1989 Eras✨💖💙 Best night with the best people @joeyking,” Hunter captioned the post.

Jason Derulo

In Europe for his “Nu King” world tour, Jason Derulo had the rare day off Friday — sort of.

Seated in an airy hotel room in Vienna, the industrious musician’s supposed down time would be spent up on stage filming at the venue for a documentary concert series that is in development. Dressed in a black baseball hat, silver chains, a black concert T-shirt and jeans, Derulo looked relaxed albeit a bit wearied. One month into his tour, being on the road is a test of endurance.

People might feel as though they already know him, given his collaborations with Michael Buble , Nicki Minaj, 2 Chainz, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Meghan Trainor, YoungBoy and other talent. In addition to Derulo’s 58.8 million followers on TikTok , millions have laughed at a viral meme of what appears to be him falling down The Met Gala ‘s red-carpeted stairs that continues to resurface, as it has in recent years. The latest version was after this month’s Oscars with “Anatomy of a Fall” actress Sandra Hüller pushing him. That never happened, nor has Derulo ever fallen down a flight of stairs. But we’ll get back to that later.

What is happening is a residency at The Voltaire at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas that gets underway in mid-May. Truth be told, “the Vegas residency is a lot easier than what I’m doing right now by the way [laughs]. This involves travel. Vegas is a 30-minute flight — that’s nothing. I’ll commute, for sure.”

As for what he packed for the “Nu King” tour, glancing away, Derulo said, “As I look at seven suitcases next to me, we just bring everything. You’ve got to bring everything, because you don’t want to leave anything behind. I get stuff on-the-road as well.”

At each stop, a rider is set up with small trees, plants, rugs and plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, thanks to a team of 10 that cooks for everyone. “I’ve been trying to eat food that is alive and not just the meats,” he said.

His fashion choices are also selective, as in “one-in-ones. I’m not really wearing things that you would recognize. I can’t really have something on that somebody could say, ‘Oh, I went to this store and got that.’ I have different designers make me things. Philipp Plein has made me specific things. I also wear a lot of boutique stuff that stylists have gotten in London, Paris and Los Angeles.”

What Derulo misses most about Los Angeles is by far his toddler son Jason King, and also recording. Known for a solid work ethic, Derulo said his drive comes from having really big dreams and really high expectations. “There’s never a stopping point, because there’s never a finish line. The finish line keeps moving. It’s like you’re running a race and thinking, ‘I’m almost there. Why am I not getting closer?’”

His nonprofit, Just for You Foundation, does work in Haiti, where Derulo has two schools. Regarding the current unrest there, the musician, whose parents are Haitian, said, “What’s going on now is really tough, so we’ll see when I can make it over there [again]. I’m not sure how much the schools are still able to operate, honestly.”

A far lighter matter is the meme of Derulo falling. Unable to think of another meme with that longevity, he finds the whole thing “hilarious. I’ve never fallen in my life. I’m not a faller — I’m too smooth.”

Asked about the recent increased public discussion about Photoshopping and deep fakes, he said, “The meme is the meme. I’m not going to put too much weight on that. It’s a joke. I’m definitely one to take a joke,” he said.

“In terms of Photoshop in general, I think Photoshop can be really dangerous. But AI is far more very dangerous, because it can take someone’s likeness and recreate it and doctor their voice. So many things can happen with that technology. That is the real concern. I’ve seen a video where a young girl was asking her parents to send some money to these guys, because she said she had been kidnapped. It was not a video of her at all.”

Asked why he is so popular on TikTok , Derulo said he has become “very free” with what he posts. While trying to figure out social media before the pandemic, Derulo promised himself that he would post at least six times a day. That quota meant having to post anything and everything, but that exercise also led to posting videos of things that happen in his life and the funny s–t that happens all the time. I just recreate it for the people to see. We all love to laugh.”

Turning more serious, Derulo said “Nu King” is by far his “most emotional, vulnerable, grown-up album. I attribute that to having grown up as a man. I have gone through a lot in my life. But I also speak differently now and emote differently. Every part of my life has grown and music is no different.”

Uncertain whether the “U + I” people would connect to it as he had in the writing process, Derulo said, “It is the greatest feeling in the world to have the audience sing that with me. When you’re writing these songs, it’s usually like a selfish kind of therapy. To have them sing that with me and take part [makes you think] ‘Damn. I’m not the only person who feels this way.’ We all go through very similar things.”

Now the man that he had always dreamed of being as a 10-year-old, Derulo said, “I am now stepping into that vision in 2024. That is a huge part of the album’s title. My son’s name is also Jason King so he’s a ‘Nu King’ as well.”

Derulo’s message to the world is, “Life is short. I would utilize my time and energy on two things — serving others and making yourself happy. Whatever it is that makes you happy — you should do that. Money will follow. The necessities will follow but do the things that you love doing. Life really will pass you by in the blink of an eye.

“My greatest gift is I really live in the present and take advantage of life. I am squeezing every f–king ounce of this thing, and I would love if everybody did the same.”

“Steve Vai is the only guitarist who could play my parts. I’m totally psyched for this”: Robert Fripp gives his blessing for a new King Crimson supergroup, featuring Steve Vai, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin and Danny Carey

The star-studded lineup will perform tracks from King Crimson's ’80s albums – and it was Fripp who suggested the group's name

Robert Fripp Steve Vai

Because Steve Vai clearly doesn’t have enough projects to keep his fretboard-bothering fingers busy, he’s joined a new King Crimson-honoring supergroup, Beat.

It sees him join forces with King Crimson alumni Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, and Tool’s rhythmic tour de force Danny Carey. With the blessing of Robert Fripp, the band will perform tracks from King Crimson’s trio of ‘80s LPs, Discipline, Beat , and Three Of A Perfect Pair.

Writing on Facebook , the King Crimson guitarist detailed the background to the band’s formation, saying: “This is the project that Adrian Belew called me about last Autumn, a project which I support and fully encourage, and discussed with Steve Vai recently... Even, I suggested the name.”

In a separate statement, Fripp added, “Steve Vai asked me what I thought when Adrian Belew told me Steve would be the guitarist. My reply: Steve Vai is the only guitarist who could play my parts.”

Via a third Facebook post, Fripp hyped the band, revealing he is excited by the prospect of the four distinguished musicians re-energizing Crimson’s music.

“This is music to be played, engaged, re-imagined, heard anew, chewed up and digested,” he said. “I'm totally psyched for this.”

Details of Beat’s plans are scarce, save for one confirmed show at Humphrey’s Concerts By The Bay in San Diego on 17 September.

The show adds to Vai’s tireless 2024 touring schedule, which started off with the reunion of the classic G3 line-up and also includes a co-headline tour with Joe Satriani in the US .

It seems unlikely that Beat will be just a one-show-wonder, so keep your eyes on these pages for further details in the future.

Beat may have plenty in the pipeline, but King Crimson’s future is a somewhat clouded.  Speaking to Guitar World previously , Fripp has admitted that it’s “hard to say” what the future holds for the progressive rock giants.

In other news, another former King Crimson man, Trey Gunn, recently championed Fripp’s impact on his guitar playing . He says he “helped create almost a new genre” with each King Crimson song the pair worked on.

Augeri also released a solo album, "Seven Ways 'Til Sunday" in 2022.
