Labuan is an island city of Malaysia, 8km off the closest point of Sabah and this tiny island is only 92sq km it is home to some of Borneo’s most noteworthy landmarks. Only a 20 minute boat ride from Menumbok, a small fishing town in Sabah, it is also reachable by air-conditioned ferries from Brunei and Sarawak. You’ll also find direct flights to the island from Kuala Lumpur.

Originally used as a base for the British to fight against piracy in the South China Sea, the island has a complicated history having been at one time owned by the Sultanate of Brunei, the British and Singapore.  Occupied by the Japanese from 1941-1945 it was finally liberated by the Australian 9th Division.  

These days, the island is a ‘Federal Territory of Malaysia’, with its own flag and national anthem, and is quite the secret paradise – with quiet streets, paradise beaches and stunning sunsets. …and not to mention, duty-free shopping and cheap drinks!

Walk Into A Tropical Paradise In Labuan Botanical Garden

Just 5 minutes drive from town, Labuan Botanical Garden is the best place to visit in Labuan if you are travelling with young children. Beautifully landscaped, you can easily spot exquisite tropical plants and flowers such as hibiscus, orchids, ferns, palms, heliconias, banyan trees and also a sensational herb garden. The onsite free-entry recreational park has a children’s playground, water features, skate ramp, gazebos and bridges across its two lakes. Nicely shaded, this is a perfect spot to spend an afternoon.

Besides the botanical features, Labuan Botanical Garden is also part of the city’s valuable history. A government house once stood here but was completely destroyed during WWII.  Today, you can only see a damaged water tank and there are a couple of graves in the park that date back to 1847, thus history enthusiasts will find this place fascinating.

See The Main Sikh Temple In Labuan: Gurdwara Sahib

If you are familiar with the Golden Temple in Amritsar, India, you will easily see the resemblance at Gurdwara Sahib. This handsome building was first constructed in 1950 as a wooden structure by Indian Sikh migrants, who were moved here by the British in the 1860s to work as coal miners or policemen. The building was subsequently rebuilt in 1997 into today’s white double-storey brick design with three glittering golden domes, heavily based on the Golden Temple.

Visitors can roam around the interior, viewing a large assembly hall and kitchen, plus there are rooms available for Sikh visitors or those in need. Note, you are required to place a small cloth over your head during the visit. 

Gurdwara Sahib is definitely the most majestic Labuan tourist attraction.

Honour The Lost Soldiers Of War In Labuan War Cemetery

During the Japanese invasion of Borneo in WWII, thousands of soldiers – mainly from Australian, Indian and British troops – were lost. Upon the end of WWII, Labuan War Cemetery was opened in December 1945. Dedicated to these fallen heroes, it is currently maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Almost 4,000 heroic soldiers are buried here – many sadly unnamed – making the Labuan War Cemetery the largest of its kind across Malaysia. A quiet place to reflect, the cemetery is beautifully landscaped with tranquil surroundings and is the best Labuan place to visit for reminiscing over this heartbreaking moment in history and the atrocities of war.

Travel In Time By Visiting The Labuan Clock Tower

Another historical landmark within the city is the Labuan Clock Tower. Surviving WWII, though severely damaged, the clock tower was the only standing structure in the town after the onslaught by the Allied Forces to evict the Japanese. A few years later, it was completely demolished, but the local authorities reconstructed today’s clock tower in 2002, at the same spot as it once stood, as a tribute to those who died during the war.

A small park is around the clock tower and it chimes appealingly on the hour and is lit up at night.

Explore Labuan’s Rich Maritime Past In Marine Museum

Being an island city, Labuan is undoubtedly rich in both marine life and maritime history. Within this museum, you’ll enjoy a hands-on and up close experience with local sea creatures, especially at the “touch pool” filled with unusual sea life such as sand sharks, starfish and stingrays.

And for those of you that have travelled to Labuan for diving the famed 4-shipwrecks, you should definitely make a stop here first. Exhibits and displays take you through the history and stories of the shipwrecks, making your dive experience a little more interesting.

Check Out The Most Historic Site In Labuan: Ramsey Point

Out of all the places of interest in Labuan, Ramsey Point is considered as the most symbolic. 

In 1846, when the Sultan of Brunei officially handed over Labuan to the British Crown, the ceremony was held at Ramsey Point. Later, in 1945, the Allied forces used the same location as a landing point, subsequently freeing Labuan from Japanese occupation. Naturally, both events are critical points in Labuan’s history, making Ramsey point an iconic place to visit. 

Located on the beach, right next to the Maritime Museum, the 3-storey observation tower provides an extraordinary view of the sea and the local neighbourhood.  And don’t forget to check out the plaques detailing the historical events.

Stay The Night In A Water Village (Kampung Bebuloh/Kampung Patau-Patau)

You’ll find two water villages in Labuan, mostly lived in by Brunei-Malay.  Made up of wooden houses that are built on stilts and connected by wooden bridges, they form two unique kampungs (‘village’ in Malay).  Today, these villages are some of the most traditional modes of living across all of Malaysia. 

Spend time wandering around the villages on an organised tour or – to get the most authentic experience – we recommend spending a night here.  Many of the households are happy to host you at a very reasonable price, and surprisingly all of the houses are connected with water supply and electricity.  With spacious interiors you’ll enjoy your stay here, surrounded by super friendly Malays, and can even taste some local delicacies!

Relax At Any West Coast Beaches

Malaysia is a country blessed with an immeasurable number of pristine beaches. Though Labuan isn’t famous for this, along its west coast you’ll find several untouched beaches with sugar-like white sand and breathtaking panoramic views, all overlooking the South China Sea. 

Beaches are spotless and are lapped by crystal clear water. A perfect place to relax at, enjoy a nap in the shade of beautiful coconut trees, or just plunge into the turquoise water to cool down.

Meet Dozens Of Bird Species At The Labuan Bird Park

At the northernmost tip of Labuan, approximately 16km from the City, you will find the Labuan Bird Park. Housing over 580 exotic birds, mostly native to Borneo, look out for kingfishers, hornbills, sharma and more. 

Take a walk under their three domes for an up close experience, with birds flying freely around you.  Also, try to catch the live bird show, featured daily.  For those interested, there’s also an information centre providing more details on birdlife in Borneo. 

Located near Labuan Chimney (see below), it’s great to combine both places for a full day tour.

Try To Solve The Mystery Of Labuan Chimney & Tour Chimney Museum

The mysterious Chimney is one of the most interesting places to visit in Labuan. This 32.5m tall chimney is believed to have been built in the early 1900s. There is nothing particularly remarkable in the design of the structure, yet its purpose has puzzled people for years!  

Some believe the Chimney was simply a ventilation shaft of the nearby coal mine, whilst others suggest it to be a beacon or a bell tower. …today, its purpose is still not fully defined.

Adjacent to the structure is the Chimney Museum, featuring the coal mining history of Labuan. This two-storey building exhibits mining artefacts found during archaeological excavations of the local area. Visitors can view coal mining equipment, remains of coal transportation trains, opium pipes and much more. It also features the original bricks used to build the chimney which were shipped all the way from Scotland to Labuan!  

A place of fascinating local history, this is a must stop when visiting the northern part of the island.

Enjoy Serenity At Peace Park

Having visited all the historic landmarks in Labuan, heavy with memories of the atrocities of war, a visit to Peace Park offers a sense of harmony. Built by the Japanese to express their genuine regret over the brutal war crimes committed by their forefathers during the invasion of Borneo in WWII, this memorial park offers solace. 

Built at a symbolic location, next to Surrender Point and near to where Japanese officers were prosecuted for war crimes, the park is well maintained with lush green gardens, an arched bridge and pillared gazebos around a lake.  

At the entrance, there is a stone slab written in both Japanese & English stating “Peace Is Best”, which perfectly defines the repaired friendship and shared vision between the people of Malaysia and Japan. 

Funded heavily by the Japanese government, the park is a tranquil and lovely spot to truly soak up the serenity.

Visit The Spot Where WW2 Ended In Labuan: Surrender Point Memorial

Next to Peace Park is Surrender Point Memorial.  Here is where, in a formal ceremony of surrender back in September 1945, Lieutenant General Masao Baba from the Japanese forces handed over a sword to Australian Major General George Wootten. 

Located right at the beach, an information plaque tells the story of the ending of WWII in Borneo.  

Visit at dusk for a truly atmospheric moment – with nostalgic thoughts set to the gorgeous backdrop of a magically red and orange sunset across calm seas.

Learn More Of Labuan’s History In Labuan Museum

Originally used as the British Administration Office in the 1950s, the Labuan Museum officially opened in 2004. 

The exhibitions on display are divided into two storeys, with the lower showcasing the chronological history of Labuan Island.  Artefacts, memorabilia and monetary pieces take you from when the island was a Brunei territory, to falling under the British Crown, through the Japanese WWII invasion, and to finally gaining independence in the 1960s. 

The upper level is dedicated to the socio-cultural aspect of Labuan. Visitors can see various cultural items such as musical instruments, wedding accessories and costumes from Labuan’s 6 major local communities (Brunei Malays, Chinese, Kadazandusun, Kedayan, Indians and Sikhs) and how they harmoniously share their lives in this tiny island.

Though a relatively small establishment, it provides you with excellent historical and cultural knowledge of beautiful Labuan Island.

Have A Quick Stroll At Labuan Square

Sitting in the middle of Labuan Town Center is Labuan Square. This open-air grandstand is used mainly for town celebrations, performances, or sports events… so pay attention if you are travelling to Labuan during any major Malaysian holiday as you might catch a live show!

Labuan Museum, Financial Park Complex and Labuan Square are close to each other.  Combine a visit to the first two in the morning and rest up at the Square afterwards to relax and enjoy watching the passing locals.  

For those travelling by ferry, when leaving the island, this is a perfect spot for waiting outside of the ferry terminal.

Explore Under The Water In The Labuan Marine Park

Towards the southwest of Labuan Island are three secluded islands (Pulau Kuraman, Pulau Rusukan Besar and Pulau Rusukan Kecil) altogether forming the Labuan Marine Park. The most remarkable characteristic of the Park is without a doubt the famed 4-shipwrecks, that annually attract thousands of scuba diving fans.

Pulau Kuraman, the largest of the three islands, is the most developed – with two beaches, a proper jetty and several chalets.  Surrounded by hard coral, the island is a perfect spot for snorkelling, sunbathing, picnicking, and you’ll also find some great jungle treks. 

Pulau Rusukan Besar is nearest to the shipwreck diving sites; thus many divers use this as a base.  And the smallest island, Pulau Rusukan Kecil, is undeveloped but ideal if you are looking for an untouched natural desert-island experience.  

Most visitors enjoy a day trip visiting each of the islands or diving at several of the 4-shipwreck sites.  Please note that if you are interested in camping, prior permission from the local authority is required.  Also, be reminded that fishing and anchoring are not allowed within the marine park and the best time to visit is between February and October.

Standing only a couple of blocks away from Labuan Museum, the Premierz Hotel is surrounded by local eateries and is a convenient 10 minutes from the ferry terminal. 

Small but adequate, all rooms have ensuite bathrooms and are air-conditioned. Basic toiletries, a hairdryer and kettle are included in the room price but do take note that their modest-priced standard room has no windows. For those who are claustrophobic, you might want to top up slightly for a room with a city view. Family rooms are also available with 1 single and 1 double bed, suitable for a maximum of 3 adults or 2 adults and 1 child.

How To Get To Labuan

It’s easy to get to Labuan by plane or ferry. Being an island, there are no roads to get here.

Daily flights to Labuan Airport are available via Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia, and MASWings from Brunei, Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

Ferries run regularly as well from Muara, Kota Kinabalu and Lawas. A boat journey from Kota Kinabalu to Labuan would take about three and a half hours.

Are you wondering what things to do in Labuan Island with children? 

There are a couple of fun child-friendly locations, such as the Botanical Garden and the Bird Park. And for those travelling with older children, especially if they are interested in history, there are many historical places of interest and war stories to learn.

Located in an isolated valley just a 90-minute drive away from Labuan Bajo town, this is a beauty . To get to the stunning Cunca Rami Waterfalls, you’ll need to take a winding, narrow and bumpy road until you reach the nearest village.

TRAVELIST TIP: I highly recommend doing these off-the-beaten-path activities with a tour i.e: car and driver! Although you might think you’re a competent motorcycle driver – these roads are not your typical city streets and are very isolated so if you do get a spot of bother – it might be more serious than you think!

From here, it’s just a 40-minute hike along a small river before you can marvel at this natural wonder . Make sure to bring plenty of water and food for the journey and enjoy meeting some friendly locals who will greet you along the way.

Bring along your swim gear too because it’s very likely that you’ll want to take a dip in the serene waterfall pool after that journey.

Also, be sure to take a guide to the falls: it’s about IDR 50 000 – 100 000 (remember you’re also there to boost the economy and give these locals a chance to take care of you and snap all your instaworthy shots)

Cunca Wulang Waterfall

Cunca Wulang is a spectacular waterfall located in the Mbeliling Forest area . From Labuan Bajo city centre, you’ll need to take a scenic 1-hour drive through winding roads until you reach the nearest village, then take an adventurous 20-minute hike to the top of the waterfall.

Standing at almost 2000m above sea level it’s a stunner ! Once you’ve reached the top, you’ll be greeted with a breathtaking view of a deep blue lagoon and cascading tumbling waterfalls surrounded by lush green foliage.

This is an absolute must-visit when things to do in Labuan Bajo as it’s simply stunning ! Take your shoes off and dip your toes in the refreshing pool of cool, clear water. it’s so inviting and tranquil!

If you’re feeling daring, you can even leap from some of the rocky outcrops around the top of the waterfall – but make sure to check how deep it is first! Check with your guide (Another reason why guides are so important) as it may be dry season and the water volume may not be sufficient for a cliff jump.

Getting there is only a 45 minute to an 1-hour car ride to Rangko village, From the village, it’s a 10-minute boat ride to an isolated beach and then a five-minute hike uphill to the cave.

Kampung Melo or Melo Village is another one of the things to do in Labuan Bajo and offers a more modern experience . Here, you can explore its colourful markets, take part in its vibrant festivals, or enjoy some delicious local cuisine .

TRAVELIST TIP: Take the chance to try out ‘sopi’, a local palm wine before witnessing the ‘Caci’ performances . Also important to note is that if you would like to see the Caci Dance, you have to make a reservation and there is a fee for the performance – therefore do this as part of a tour.

The Manggarai of Indonesia possesses a unique cultural tradition in the form of their Caci dance. This whip fight is more than just entertainment, as it serves to express profound philosophical values and beliefs for which this tribe stands. During these events, an entire village unites through joyous chants, songs and bells that bring out life into this communal spectacle!

Todo Village

Todo Village is a unique Manggarai settlement located in the Flores region of Indonesia that offers an alternative to Wae Rebo for those with limited time or energy.

This popular spot is known by many names: Love hill (Bukit Cinta), Sylvia hill (Bukit Sylvia), and curiously enough even Teletubbies hill (Bukit Teletubbies) . Despite the name differences, this place has a breathtaking view . Do steer clear however of the resort of the same name Sylvia Resort as that’s obviously private property.

TRAVELIST TIP: I’d advise heading for the buildup to an epic sunset view . The scenery from the top of the hill and the golden hour of the sunset is simply gorgeous .

The inhabitants have made an interesting adaptation – avoiding the storage of fresh water so as not to attract mosquitoes. It’s truly remarkable that this tiny seaside community has managed such ingenuity !

This is a great place to visit for travellers looking for an insight into local culture and traditions . Here you can learn about the history of the village, explore its stilted dwellings, chat with the friendly locals and even take part in some traditional dancing!

Sembilan Island is a unique destination, formed by dead corals. Despite the uncomfortable walking surface caused by its hard coral features, visitors should not be afraid to venture into this paradise, especially because of its extremely unique natural pool pond!

This pool filled with jellyfish will make you gasp at first sight BUT they have lost their stinging ability over time from lack of predators and now can even be held with your hands (carefully!).

It’s also worth noting that the high season in Labuan Bajo is from July to August and around Christmas and New Year. During these peak times, prices for accommodation and tours can be higher and places can get crowded .

OPTION 2: Hire a Motorcycle One of the most popular ways to get around is by renting a motorbike or scooter. There are several rental shops in town where you can rent a bike for a day or longer. This gives you the freedom to explore the area at your own pace and visit nearby attractions such as waterfalls, beaches, and viewpoints – WORD OF WARNING: Only rent a motorcycle if you have a valid motorcycle licence, Travel insurance and have experience riding one in South East Asian Cities.

OPTION 3: Taxi Taxis are also available in Labuan Bajo, but they can be more expensive than other options. It’s important to discuss prices before getting in the taxi and make sure you agree on the fare before starting your journey.

The main town is known as Labuan Town (Bandar Labuan in Malay)but was formerly known as Victoria during the colonial era. Labuan Town is among the cleanest towns in Malaysia. You will observe the Labuan Corporation (local authority) workers diligently doing their job.

Labuan was proclaimed a Federal Territory on 16/04/1984 and declared an International Offshore Financial Centre on 1/10/1990. A few of the major businesses that are run on the island include international offshore banking, steel mills, a methanol plant, floor tiles production, flour mills as well as offshore supplies. Because of these major businesses, Labuan has many non-Labuan natives that work here.

Meet and greet by our representative Labuan Airport / Labuan International Ferry Terminal or Hotel, then proceed to Labuan city tour. Tour features LABUAN MUSEUM - Displays the history and culture of Labuan. Its history covers pre-historic era of Labuan, Brunei Sultanate, British colonial days, World War II, Independence, declaration of Labuan as federal Territory up to the establishment of Labuan Corporation.

MUSEUM SQUARE - Where one can still see a few old houses of colonial design. Four old Flame of the Forest still stand in this area, casting a shade over park benches and commemorative stones. The trees were planted by the Chinese, Malay , Indians and European Communities in 1953 to mark the coronation of Queen Elizabeth ll.

WAR WORLD II MEMORIALS PARK - 3,908 graves of soldiers who either died in battle or captivity lie here. Most of the soldiers were Australians and British with some from the Punjab Signal Corp, New Zealand as well as a few locals.

LABUAN INTERNATIONAL SEA SPORT COMPLEX - Center for major sea sports activities and a venue for carnival, you will visiting the MARINE MUSEUM which preserve the marine life. THE WATER VILLAGE - The houses here, which are built right at the water's edge, are made of wood and sit on high stilts, joined together with a maze of wooden walkways. Visitors are free to roam around the vicinity of the water villages and observe the humble lifestyle of a predominantly fishing community.

PEACE PARK & JAPANESE SURRENDER POINT – The Peace Park was built as a memorial and also as a renunciation of the horrors of war. It is dominated by the memorial mound which is surrounded by landscaped gardens and pavilions. Small ponds with stone bridges and park seats are all Japanese-inspired.

THE CHIMNEY - The 106 feet high structure is Labuan’s most well-known landmark. It was built in the 1800’s. The actual purpose of the Chimney is still a mystery but many believe it served as a ventilation shaft. Recent archaeological study found no traces of smoke to suggest its use as a chimney.

Labuan doesn’t have the same reputation as neighboring Sabah for postcard-perfect beaches.

But drive ten minutes from Labuan Port and you’ll find several unspoiled stretches of sand.

The undeveloped beaches along Labuan’s western and northern coastline are practically empty.

A handful of local families sit under the shady palm trees. Two or three kids play in the sand and splash around the gentle waters.

You won’t see anyone else.

Hardly any non-Malaysians have stepped foot on the sugar-like sand.

Floating villages rising precariously above the water are a common site in Borneo.

Where to Stay In Labuan Bajo

Everyone coming to Labuan Bajo is here for Komodo National Park, including us. We spent a total of 4 nights in town and 1 night on an overnight snorkeling trip to Komodo.

We planned to stay two nights to give us time to arrange a boat trip to Komodo, and then return for another two nights to find our land legs again.

We narrowed it down to two places, but just couldn’t choose one, so we decided to split our stay between the two places. (If you’re posh you could call it a “ Twin Center City Break “). In the end, our two choices turned out to be very different, but both were very enjoyable.

Sitting on the highest point in town, La Cecile probably has one of the best views in Labuan Bajo. Our complimentary pick-up from the airport took us to La Cecile in about 5 minutes and it was love at first sight. The sweeping view down towards town, the boats in the harbour and the islands is spectacular.

The views continue in our room with a balcony. Crisp white bedding and AC complete all our needs for a comfortable stay. The pool overlooking that view is just the place for a refreshing dip or to stare vacantly for some time.

The restaurant at La Cecile does a good job of both Indonesian and Western dishes. The included breakfast comes with many different options and of course, that breakfast view.

Some nights, there is a live band, and sipping on a cold one while the sky sets on fire with some good tunes is just magic. Sunset is quite popular at La Cecile and the atmosphere is fantastic.

Before booking, we were worried that the restaurant might be too noisy or interfere with our privacy at the pool. We are happy to say that our concerns were unfounded. Only guests are allowed in the pool area and the sound from the band doesn’t drift down to the rooms.

An old favourite in Labuan Bajo, Golo Hilltop’s garden setting and quiet atmosphere is a great place to relax before or after your island hopping trip to Komodo. The pool here also has a good view over the islands and we really like how you are surrounded by the lush gardens. (We went in January, which is the rainy season, so please don’t be upset when you get there in July and it’s all brown).

The room is comfy and clean, and comes with a fan, AC and a mosquito net. We also like the little fridge in the room. You can tell Golo Hilltop has been around for a while, but we couldn’t really find any fault with it.

A simple breakfast of eggs, bread, fruit, coffee and juice is included and is had overlooking the garden and blue waters behind it.

Golo Hilltop is a solid mid-range option and we did enjoy staying here a lot.

Explore Komodo National Park

The real reason you come to Labuan Bajo is to explore the awe-inspiring Komodo islands to the west of Flores Island. With some of the best diving and snorkeling on the planet, crystal clear waters, pink beaches and mythical dragons, Komodo is a paradise for adventure lovers.

There are numerous tours to Komodo available in Labuan Bajo and on the internet. Take a stroll along Jalan Soekarno Hatta, the city’s main street to shop for and compare the tours on offer. We didn’t like the idea of joining a tour, so we were looking for a private boat to take us to Komodo.

We chartered a private boat to take us on an overnight snorkeling trip. We did our research and chose the spots we wanted to visit, communicated our needs to several agencies until we found a boat with the right price. Going private was quite affordable and perhaps the best decision we made for visiting Komodo.

Our island hopping trip revolved around snorkeling, chilling, napping, scaling Padar Island for that quintessential Komodo view and spotting dragons on Rinca Island.

Find the Best Sunset Spots in Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo faces directly west and that makes for spectacular sunsets. Order yourself a drink and watch the sky and water light up in a hundred shades of orange. Here are our favourite places to watch the sunset from:

La Cecile is not only one of the best hotels in Labuan Bajo, but also one (if not THE best) sunset spot in town.

The views and vibes from here are what sunsets are made for! With live music, cold drinks and happy people, the atmosphere is just so chilled. Everyone is all smiles and radiates good vibes as everything and everyone glows in the last orange light.

It is indeed the golden hour up at La Cecile during sunset.

Green Cherry (Formerly Tree Top)

When we came to Labuan Bajo on our first trip, this great sunset spot right above the harbour was called Tree Top. Tree Top is no more, but instead, you’ll find Green Cherry here now.

It’s still the same location and the same stunning sunsets, just a different name.

Almost on the water overlooking the jetty, Green Cherry is just the place to watch everything turn orange. Watching the boats come in from the islands in that fantastic orange glow is almost therapeutic.

If you want this view every day, you can also stay at Eco Tree O’tel , which Green Cherry is part of.

Park yourself in the front row seat overlooking the islands and boats, order a cold one and enjoy the beats at Paradise Bar. It is actually a pretty apt name, considering it’s a bar, and well… it’s paradise.

Looking at the size of the bar and the stage, this place might just be a very good party venue. On our visit, it was nice and peaceful. Just how we like it.

Reach Nirvana at Wae Molas Spa

Wae Molas with their magical touch was on top of our to-do list on our second trip to Labuan Bajo. We knew what to expect, and looked forward to lying down on that massage bed to look down into the flower bowl beneath while our therapists made every trouble in the world disappear.

We had one of the best massages ever at Wae Molas after returning from our overnight snorkeling trip on our first visit, and we believe it’s still the best massage in Labuan Bajo.

Nothing says “holiday” and “relax” quite like a good old massage.

You might have to wait a while or return the next day if you didn’t make a reservation. We dropped by in the morning and made a reservation for the afternoon.

The spa is at Wae Molas Hotel , so you could have a drink or relax by the pool before or after your session.

We got the Traditional Full Body Massage for 90 minutes, which costs IDR 235K. People, trust me, it was heaven and we were like putty in their skilful hands.

Find Paradise on Kelor Island

Those who say that you must go into Komodo National Park to see the most beautiful parts of Labuan Bajo are all wrong. They obviously haven’t been Kelor Island.

Stunning Kelor is one of the islands closest to Labuan Bajo, so come here to see the splendour of Komodo without spending hours on a boat.

A short but steep path goes to the top of Kelor Island, from where you’ll get one of the best views in Komodo. We think it’s the most beautiful spot in Komodo after Padar Island.

There are several warungs selling food and cold drinks, beer and coconuts, as well as toilets. You can easily spend a few hours here swimming, eating and relaxing. The clear and shallow water surrounding the island is perfect for dips and swims, but the snorkeling is poor.

Combine Kelor Island with Manjarite Beach (see below) which has great snorkeling for a fantastic half-day trip from Labuan Bajo.

Go Snorkeling at Manjarite

If your looking for decent snorkeling near Labuan Bajo, but don’t want to spend all day on a boat to get there, then Manjarite Beach is what you’re looking for.

Under an hour by wooden boat (slow boat) from Labuan Bajo harbour, Manjarite is an incredibly beautiful spot. Manjarite is uninhabited, so there are no facilities. The only way to get there is by renting a boat. Some tours do stop here for snorkeling, but most skip it and motor straight to Komodo.

Snorkeling at Manjarite is pretty decent. Expect to see a lot of hard coral and plenty of small, colorful fish. Manjarite has almost no current and beautiful scenery both above and underwater. Snorkelling here is suitable for all ages and abilities, thanks to the calm and shallow water.

Manjarite is a great spot for those who have visited Komodo already, but still want to do some island hopping and snorkelling without the entire dragon-Padar-Pink Beach -shebang.

We rented a wooden boat for a half-day trip to Manjarite and Kelor Island and paid IDR 1.5 million.

Where to Eat in Labuan Bajo

There are, surprisingly, very good options for eating in Labuan Bajo. Everything from typical Padang food joints to Mediterranean fare. The fresh seafood here is especially good, as you can expect from a fishing town.

Labuan Bajo Fish/Night Market

If you’re only having one dinner in Labuan Bajo, let it be at the fish market. The food and atmosphere is something unique to the city.

Officially named Pasar Malam, everyone simply calls it the Night Market or Fish Market. This market is the best place for fresh seafood in town. The stalls are set up around sunset and are popular among local and international tourists alike.

As a good fish market should be, the fresh fish, crabs, lobsters, shells, shrimps, octopus and squid are on display for you to inspect before you choose. (Smell, touch, probe-make sure those gills are fresh and red inside.)

Once you made a choice you can request how you want it prepared. The basic options are either grilled with BBQ or lemon-garlic sauce or cooked as a curry. We went with everything grilled (Bakar) and it was damn good.

You can also order sides such as chicken, rice, veg and drinks. If not getting fresh fruit juice, it’s a good idea to grab your drinks or beers from the shops just across from the stalls.

Happy Banana

Happy Banana is the new cool place in town. It used to be Bajo Taco, but that closed down and Happy Banana is now the reigning king of cool.

Happy Banana is definitely not a dull place: pictures of naked women meet the gaze of Ganesh while the plates of food explode with colour and flavour.

On the menu, you’ll find everything healthy and delicious, from sushi, sashimi, poke bowls, quinoa burgers to edamame and falafel. Happy Banana has quickly established itself as the best restaurant in Labuan Bajo for vegans and vegetarians.

I ordered the Rainbow Poke Bowl, which was packed with goodness and colour. It didn’t only look great but tasted dynamite. Jin had the Tuna Tataki with miso mashed potato, which was damn good too.

The best pizza in Labuan Bajo lives at a restaurant called Fellas, and man…are they good?!

Fellas was buzzing with locals and tourists when we arrived, showing that it has indeed dethroned La Cucina (see below) as the best pizza joint in Labuan Bajo.

Owned by the same man behind Baccala, another top-rated restaurant in town- the owner definitely knows what good food is and what makes a good restaurant.

Jin went with her traditional Margherita and I went with the owner’s recommendation – a Rendang pizza. The pizzas at Fellas are medium thickness, with the perfect base-to-topping ratio. My Rendang Pizza had a delightful spicy coconut flavour to the beef. Give it a try when you come.

Fellas open for lunch at 12 pm and closes at 11 pm every day.

We just loved Santeria. It’s laid back, has lovely outside seating, friendly staff and the food was amazing.

We came here for Jin’s birthday dinner, and wanted something special but nothing fancy, and Santeria fit this description perfectly.

It feels much like a local Indonesian Warung, but with a bit of finesse.

The grilled fish was perfect, the nasi goreng was smoky and flavourful, and the kang kung (water spinach) had the perfect balance between spicy and fresh. And of course the Bintangs were cold and served with a smile and a friendly chat.

Definitely pay these guys a visit for their amazing food and vibe.

Another great pizza and pasta place is La Cucina if you’re tired of seafood or nasi goreng , bakso and soto ayam .

We are no Italians or pizza experts, but we can say they have good pizzas (although not as good as Fellas). Their portions are large, and we could probably have shared just one. But we were hungry and fresh off a boat with salt still in our hair, so we went for a Margherita pizza and a calzone.

We have an unwritten rule about not leaving anything behind, so the plates were clean when we left- a sign that the pizza was good indeed.

We also appreciated the AC.

Rated as the number one spot to eat in town, we decided to go check it out. Baccala looks brand new and the staff is all smiles. The food is really good and feels upmarket without being stuck up. This restaurant has. a slight European feel to it in terms of food portions and presentation, but the flavours and atmosphere is 100 % Labuan Bajo.

We had the grilled octopus and barracuda. Both dishes were beautifully presented. We just wish the portions were a little bigger. We had to order some extra roasted potatoes to fill us up.

Hong Signature Restaurant

For Chinese -Indonesian fare, Hong Signature Restaurant on Jalan Soekarno Hatta is your place. We had a perfectly grilled fish with spicy mango salsa, sweet and sour prawns and bbq clams. The food was incredible.

You can also find some dim sum on the menu. While the food was amazing, the dessert was disappointing.

The restaurant at La Cecile, the hotel where we stayed, does some really good food. Going up to La Cecile to catch the sunset and a drink before dinner can make for a good night.

The menu has both Western and Indonesian dishes. We had the rendang and chicken satays which were both really good.

Get Yourself a Scooter

The best way to get around Labuan Bajo, and any other place in Indonesia for that matter, is by renting a scooter. This gives you the freedom to go where you please and it’s no fun walking anywhere in the tropical sun and humidity.

Ask your hotel, they might have scooters for rent. Our hotel was out of bikes, so I went to good old Google and sent a few WhatsApp messages, which also proved unsuccessful. Luckily Jin found a guy on Korean blogs.

Send Made Perama (WhatsApp +62 82144447272) a message about scooter rental. A 125cc goes for IDR 75K per day including helmets. He will come and deliver and collect it again for IDR 30K. All you need is to send him a copy of your passport and he’ll bring your bike to you.

How Many Days in Labuan Bajo

On our first Labuan Bajo trip, we stayed a total of five nights (one night which was on a boat). I actually made a mistake when I booked our plane tickets from Bali .

The plan was to stay in Labuan Bajo for 2 nights to find a boat charter to take us to the Komodo islands. After returning from our boat trip, we stayed one night before returning to Bali, making it 3 nights in town and 1 night on the boat.

But I made a fortunate mistake and booked the return to Bali one day later than planned. This turned out to be perfect. It was nice to simply relax by the pool and find our land feet again.

For our second trip, we stayed in Labuan Bajo for three nights, which was just great. Because we visited Komodo National Park before, we spent three days in Labuan Bajo with only a half-day trip to Kelor and Manjarite.

We suggest a minimum of three nights to make the best of your time in Labuan Bajo.

When is the Best Time to Visit Labuan Bajo

We visited Labuan Bajo in January (height of the rainy / low season), and July (dry/ peak season). Both visits were very enjoyable, so any time is as good as the other. Keep the following in mind:

• Rainy Season (November – March): Rainy season was humid AF and hot, with rain every day. The landscape was lush and green. Rain fell mainly at night, so it did not have a negative effect on our travel plans. Snorkeling was good, but the visibility was not as good as in the dry season. Sunsets were roughly 250 times better for us in the rainy season. Low season meant it was not busy at all and reduced prices for accommodation.
• Dry Season (April -October): Cool and dry weather, perfect for walking around, hiking and being active. Rain is very unlikely, so you’re in for lots of sunny days. The landscape was turning yellow-brown on the islands, but the gardens were still pretty and green in town. Peak season means it is busy (but not crowded). Lots of tours and activities on offer. Diving and snorkelling are top-notch in the dry season with fantastic visibility. Hardcore divers and snorkelers will want to come in the dry

How to Get to Labuan Bajo

Most of you will fly to Labuan Bajo Komodo Airport (LBJ).

Flights: Garuda, Batik, Citilink, NAM Air, Air Asia and Super Jet have direct flights daily from Jakarta and Bali. Wings Air flies to Bajawa, Ende and Maumere on Flores Island on propeller planes.

When searching for domestic flights in Indonesia, use Tiket , an Indonesian flight search engine. You won’t find many domestic flights on Skyscanner and the like, except for Air Asia and maybe Garuda. The other Indonesian airlines simply don’t exist there. We flew with Batik from Jakarta (2.5 hours), and NAM Air from Denpasar Bali (1 hour).

Overland: After visiting Labuan Bajo, we travelled east on Flores Island to Ende. The first step is from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng , which takes about 3.5 hours and costs IDR 160K.

The best way to travel from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng or Bajawa is Gunung Mas, a comfortable minibus with individual seats. Ask your hotel to make a reservation for you, and Gunung Mas will come and pick you up from your hotel.

Thanks for this great read. May I ask when you were there if there were concerns about malaria? Wanting to go but I have a 3 year old I don’t want to put at risk.

Hi Mands, We were there in February, and took no anti-malaria tablets. However, malaria is prevalent in the entire Indonesia. We’ve never heard of anyone catching it Indonesia, though. Going with kids is a completely different story. You’d better ask a doctor, malaria expert or someone more knowledgeable on the topic than us.

Hi Philip, January is the rainy season, and as far as we know, the tourist cruises between Lombok and Labuan Bajo are not running. The public ferries run yearround, though. It’s best to find these tourist cruises online and ask them directly whether they are operating in January.

I will be in Labuan Bajo in early November. Since you mention eating (cooked) fish, curries, rice dishes, etc. and drinking fresh fruit juices (made with water/ice), the question that comes to my mind is: did you encounter any digestive issues (troubles)? I’ve traveled a bit in Asia (Singapore, Hong, Kong, Tokyo) and never encountered issues, but I did (badly) in India and Mexico, so I’m not immune yet also not easily susceptible. Did you take any precautions while eating through Labuan Bajo (and Bali for that matter)? What advice can you give about eating out there? Thanks.

Hi Stefan, We were just in Labuan Bajo again last week and ate well with no problems. We’ve been to Indonesia 8 times and never had issues (touch wood).

When eating at the night market, inspect , smell and touch the seafood to make sure it’s fresh. Ice in drinks should be fine.

We don’t have any real advice on how to avoid getting sick, as this can happen any time or place and there is nothing you can do about it.

We are going to Bali in November, and now planning to fly over to Flores for 3 nights (2.5 days) to see a different part of Indonesia. Is the first week in November a good time to go, or would you recommend maybe waiting for another time.

Hi Ness, The weather is always unpredictable. Early November might be hot and humid with some some rain – but then it is the weather so no one knows what it will be like.

We visited Labuan Bajo in February (height of the rainy season) and in July (dry season). Both times were very enjoyable.

For the casual visitor anytime is as god as the other.

Hi Katie, if you’re staying along (or near) Jalan Soekarno Hatta – the main street in Labuan Bajo, you’ll be fine with walking. Most of the restaurants and travel agents are along this stretch. If you need wheels, ask your hotel to arrange a ojek (motorbike with driver and you sit at the back) for you.

Top Things to do in Labuan Bajo in 3 days

Experiencing local culture at Melo Village

Kampung Melo was our first stop in Labuan Bajo. After a traditional warm welcome by the Manggarai, we witnessed an array of cultural performances, relished local Manggarai cuisine and experienced their way of life.

The villagers make the complicated process of Ikat weaving look like child’s play. Their traditional bamboo pole game, Caci dance and various other forms of dancing were quite enjoyable and make for the perfect half day tour.

The Caci dance is perhaps the most integral part of their culture. It is a whip fight where male members of the Manggarai hold a whip and shield in either hands to demonstrate the philosophical values and beliefs of their tribe. The entire village is involved and comes to life with the sound of chants, songs and bells.

Visiting Komodo National park

Komodo national park was the most sought after stop in the itinerary for me and luckily, it did not disappoint. The park is home to over 4000 Komodo monitor lizards and hence tops the list of Labuan Bajo things to do , hands down.

Komodo island is the only place in the world where you can see these dragons and hence makes for one of the most popular day trips from Labuan Bajo…And let me tell you, these lizards are massive. So, you WILL be amazed!

I was especially respectful of these majestic creatures when I heard man-eating encounters of Komodo dragons in the park. There had been 2 incidents where humans were prey to these dominant predators who are fast and agile.

They ambush their prey using their natural camouflage and watch their prey with patience before pouncing with their strong claws in teeth. It is no wonder that sometimes, they can even take down large animals like water buffaloes.

If you don’t believe me, watch this video of these powerful Komodo dragons hunting their prey – Yes, even buffaloes, goats, deer, cobra and pigs!

Chilling at the Pink beach

Pink beach , locally known as Pantai Merahis gets it’s name from  Foraminifera  which look like tiny pink corals and are spread all around the beach giving it a pink tinch, especially on the shoreline.

This beach forms part of most picture post cards and is one of the best Labuan Bajo attractions for tourists from across the globe.

It is the perfect place for a dip, sun bathing, hiking, sunset watching or snorkeling.

Wait you can even pose at the pink beach. Look at these wonderful blue layers of water in the ocean, making for an excellent backdrop.

Cruising through Kalong Island

As our first day at Labuan came to and end, we decided to enjoy the melting sun on our speed boat. I was surprised to see millions of bats (flying foxes) hovering around as the sun set and realized we were just next to the famous “Bat island”.

This was quite an experience with the bats flying around as the sun sets in the horizon and the waves cradle our boat. Another one of the amazing Labuan Bajo day trips which can be easily combined with the Pink beach and other nearby attractions of this exotic island.

24 hours of sailing experience

With so many Labuan Bajo activities to choose from and enjoy, this was by far the highlight of my Indonesian escapade. If you happen to be in Labuan Bajo, don’t miss this chance to get live on board a lovely sail boat and cruise through the islands.

Snorkeling in Kanawa island

Labuan Bajo with its clear blue green waters and mesmerizing scenic views, offers a vivid underwater life as well. I was amazed at the variety of coral reefs and fish I saw in these stunning waters. For me, this was the best snorkeling experience ever.

Exploring Mesa Village

Next on our list of things to do around Labuan Bajo was a short stop to experience this village on stilts. Mesa village consists of over 1500 people and they don’t have any fresh water at all.

From what I hear, the villagers are scared of mosquitoes (Dengue) and hence they stopped accumulating water in any form through the years, since we all know mosquitoes breed in water.

As per the villagers though, this is just one of the stories that has been passed on through generations and no one really knows how much truth it holds!

What surprised me most in this village was the fact that all kids were so friendly. They would not hesitate to hold your hand and walk with you as you explore the village and their parents were very supportive of their kids wandering off with strangers. I don’t see this trust a lot while traveling and its heart warming and surprising, both at the same time.

Hiking up Padar Island

Okay this is definitely a “must-do” if you are in Komodo. During our night at the boat, we made a stop to enjoy sunset from top of Padar island. It was the best decision ever, as this made my entire trip worthwhile – seriously!

I kept hearing how steep and difficult the hike was but I was determined to make it to the top. In all honestly, I would rate it as a moderate (but steep) climb which I enjoyed to the fullest.

The best part was when I found my own spot, isolated from the hoards of tourists and photographers, waiting in anticipation for the sun to set.

It took some effort and grass blade cuts, to walk on unpaved paths to reach the tip of a cliff but as you can see from these pictures, it was totally worth it and the 30 mins I spent looking at this exotic scenery, were surely some of the best moments of my life.

Labuan Bajo to Padar island forms one of the most popular day trips but to fully experience the beauty of this island, I would highly recommend getting on the boat and just stop as you please – literally!

Star gazing

Onboard Felicia,  we had a lovely sun deck with lounge bean bags. It was a great place to dance, chat and do some yoga during the day. At night, it was a different ball game all together. As the night approached, I could see the sky light up with millions of stars.. and soon we could see the milky way with our naked eyes.

I was so mesmerized by this scene that I was the last one to go to sleep that night. After all, how many times does it happen that you are on a boat amidst untouched natural beauty and get to gaze at a clear sky full of stars and gawk at the milky way? Well, it was surely a first for me!

Jumping off boats

Yes! That’s a thing and also a ‘must try’ experience. Since we were on our lovely exotic Felicia, many fellow members jumped off the boat into the inviting blue green waters.

Where to stay in Labuan Bajo

Phinisi Felicia boat by Plataran – Our night at the boat was one of the top highlights of the trip and everyone at the trip of wonders will vouch for it. Get on-board Phinisi private boats to sail away to glory at Labuan Bajo. Surely one of the best things to do in Labuan island.

Batu Cermin Cave

Located in the dark stone hills of Labuan Bajo, Batu Cermin Cave also locally known as Mirror Rock is an excellent local attraction that must be on your things to do in Labuan Bajo list. Here the sunshine penetrates the tunnel through a small hole and bounces off the stone walls that reflect small lights to brighten up other areas of the cave like a mirror effect. Here you can capture some great Instagram-worthy shots that you would cherish for years to come. 

Loh Liang National Park

While the Komodo National Park located on Flores Island is a popular vacation hotspot, Loh Liang National Park should be on your list if you are interested in watching more komodo dragons in their natural habitat. 

Rangko Cave

Nestled in the Rangko Village, you can find the Goa Rangko cave which is another great attraction that you shouldn’t miss when you are visiting Labuan Bajo. This Labuan Bajo attraction has crystal clear blue water that comes to life when the sunlight hits the water. Visiting this cave during afternoon hours would be ideal to ensure there is enough light.

Kelor Island

While you are exploring the Komodo Islands you can also take a break and head to Kelor Island which offers a great relaxing vibe like no other. Locally, known as Pulau Kelor, this is part of Komodo National Park. You can enjoy the uninhabited beach and also hike up the small mountain that offers you a stunning panoramic view of the beach. Waecicu Beach

Just beyond Bali, one hour flight to Labuan Bajo. There is any option to reach the park of komodo by boat. Walking thru the downtown to check out their trip on each travel agency. They offer cheap for small local wooden boat till luxury phinisi boat.

this is so cool! We are in Labuan Bajo now and just got ourselves a scooter. We will cruise around for the day and then go for the day trips or maybe even 2 night trip with the cruise to Pink Beach, Manta Point and Komodo. We stayed at ciao hostel.I booked my day trip (Padar, Komodo & pink beach) through the hostel – very cheap but boat & food was not that great, very basic. We were 2 of us and joined a group of 12 others on our boat.

I dived with Uber dive. They are amazing.

My suggestion, don’t pre book tours, you’ll find plenty in town. Pre booking is expensive. Just go with extra day & you should be fine.

14.00-15.00: Taka Makassar; from Komodo Island, return to the ship and continue the journey to Taka Makkasar for clear water, swimming and taking pictures. 

16.00: Manta Point, Moving from Taka Makassar, we will cross to Manta point to see Manta fish (Pari) up close. Only swimmers are allowed to snorkel at the manta point while those who can’t swim can see the fish from the boat.

16.30: Kanawa Island; if the time is still available time we can stop for snorkeling, swimming and relaxing on Kanawa Island.

17.00: Back to Labuan Bajo

Komodo Island Tour With Manta Ray Snorkeling – We will pick you up from your hotel in Labuan Bajo, then transfer to the harbor and aboard with our speed boat (sharing boat) for approx 1 hour crossing to the stunning Padar Island – Looks like God’s painting which is so wonderful and world best panorama . After trekking there, we will get on the boat, and then crossing to the Long Pink Beach – one of the most pink sandy beaches of Komodo National Park . After that, we go back to the boat and drive to Loh Liang – Komodo Island . Once we arrive on Komodo Island , we will start trekking , walk through the dry forest to see komodo dragons ( giant prehistoric lizards in the world in native habitat).

On the way, you may see deer, wild buffalo, long tailed Macaque and wild boar, and there are also many birds . A Ranger of Komodo will take you through this Nature Conservation . After visiting, we will return to the boat and continue the journey to the paradise Taka Makkasar for crystal clear water , swimming and taking pictures. And then we will drive to Manta point to see the Manta Rays (Pari) up close. Only swimmers are allowed to snorkel at the manta point while those who can’t swim can see the fish from the boat. After snorkeling with the mantas , if we have more time, we can stop for snorkeling, swimming and relaxing on Kanawa Island . We will serve you a Lunch box on the boat . At the end, we will return to Labuan Bajo and then drop off in your hotel.

LABUAN BAJO

Labuan Bajo town is the capital of the district of Manggarai Barat (West Manggarai).is located at the westernmost tip of the island. Its residents mostly make their living on the water. This is reflected by the busy bay fully laden with spider-like trimarans, canoes of different sizes, sailing vessels, and motorized boats.

Labuan Bajo town is an entry point to explore the Komodo National Park and visit the giant dragons on Komodo Island , Rinca Island and Padar Island. As the result, this town gradually turned into a busy spot because of the divers and the increased number of Komodo visitors. Moreover, it provides a wide range of tourist facilities such as 4 stars hotels, European and American restaurant, spa, diving club, bar, super luxurious ships, European and American restaurants.

Things to do in Labuan Bajo.

Labuan Bajo’s most significant features are probably its magnificent ramshackle harbor dotted with small islands and its hard-to-beat colorful sunsets. Labuan Bajo city tour package is almost a must-do for visitors to hike to one of the surrounding hills or mountains to enjoy a perfect panoramic view over the harbor and the innumerable coastal islets with their strips of white-sand beaches.

1. Sunset Time.

Most people will enjoy sunset at Bukit Amelia and Paradise Bar, Puncak Waringin and Bukit Cinta. But some other spots for sunset are from Pede Beach and some hotels or accommodations around Pede Beach and Gorontallo Village.

2. Island Hoping; snorkeling, swimming and fishing.

Kanawa Island, Burung Island, Bidadari Island, Kelor island, Sabolon Island are the most visited island for snorkeling and swimming. If you want to go fishing, we recommend you go to Sabolon Island and Northern Part of Kanawa Island where you can easily find Grouper, Tuna, Pogo Fish and many reef fish.

3. Trekking and hiking

Cunca Rami waterfall and Cunca Wulang Waterfall are the most place for trekking when you do Labuan Bajo Tour. At the end of the trekking, you can enjoy swimming or relaxing at the pool of the waterfalls. We will combine this tour with trekking at Batu Cermin Cave where you will see the beautiful stalactic and stalagmite inside the cave and some endemic spider that you can easily be found inside the dark cave.

4. Rangko Cave

Rangko cave is one of the new favorite places in Labuan Bajo. You can enjoy swimming at the small breeze natural pool inside the cave. When you go to this cave, make sure that you enter the cave at noon of after noon around 2 or 3 o’clock because the sunlight will shine through the gate to inside the cave that give you extra light. To visit this place, you can go by boat trip and car. You also can combine it with snorkeling at Burung Island and Seraya Island.

5. Enjoy traditional dancing at Melo and Cecer Village.

In one day, Labuan Bajo Tour, you can also enjoy traditional fight dancing called Caci Dancing at Melo and Cecer Village. This dancing usually is performed with two more traditional dancing; Ndundudake Dancing and Rangkuk Alu Dancing. Melo and Cecer village are placed at eastern part of Labuan Bajo town which takes around 1 hour by car from Labuan Bajo.

Get in the ship and start your Komodo tours from Labuan Bajo. In one hour the ship will carry you to Sebayur Besar, one of the twin islands just right at the border of the Komodo National Park. Sebayur offers a stunning view for trekking and fantastic snorkeling as you will experience snorkeling between the twin island and see the blooming life underneath.

For almost a week, you will sail from island to island, hopping from beach to beach, and just relish what nature has to offer. Having a week to spare means you can explore every nook and cranny of the archipelago and have a pleasure to visit hidden spot not many people know about. Stop anywhere as you please and experience the whole beauty of these islands.

Your excursion begins at  Labuan Bajo , the famous port town where the ship will sail. This is your last chance to stack up your favorite snacks before being marooned for five days ahead. Meanwhile, as you have plenty of time to spend, so why don’t we use it to explore this beautiful little port town?

Beside the port deck, Labuan Bajo has a lot to offer. This is a great point for your  Flores exploratio n! Indulge in seafood delicacy at the fish market while enjoying the ocean view. Take a little trek down to  Rangko Cave  and swim at the ridiculously clear, secret swimming hole inside the cave.

If you have much time before the scheduled time of your Komodo Flores tour, take a mini-expedition to one of Labuan Bajo’s awesome waterfalls—the  Cunca Wulang and Cunca Rami , where you can enjoy swimming and canyoning before sailing off the shore. Cunca Wulang is especially gorgeous as the water streams from the canyon, entering a gorge where you can jump into the clear water and take a great shot of it.

Which beach will we land first? That’s the question. With almost a week of sailing, you have the chance to check every island on the archipelago off the list. Maybe you can start your journey with a small island with captivating beauty, both in the land and below, such as  Sebayur island .

A great place for a starter, Sebayur is blessed with undulating hills of brownish-yellow grass, providing a pleasing contrast with the surrounding ocean. Its charming view invites you to take a short track to the hilltop, to enjoy an unobstructed ocean view and sense idyllic remoteness.

If you are a licensed diver, don’t miss the chance to dive in Sebayur—diving is Sebayur’s main attraction, anyway!  A number of world-renown diving sites  lie just a few hundreds of meters off the shore, such as the famous Batu Bolong, Crystal Rock, and Castle Rock. The surrounding marine life is spectacular with sloping reef, coral walls, colorful sea critters, and schools of many kinds of fishes. It’s almost like a diving in clear aquarium. Past the beautiful coral plateau, the water is a heaven for pelagic hunters, turtle galore, micro diving, and occasional passing Mantas.

If you wish, you can spend your first afternoon in here. The island is famous as one of the best spot in Flores to enjoy the most beautiful sunset ever. Sits on the idyllic hills and watch the sky change into pastel colors, before heading back to the cruise and prepare for tomorrow’s adventure.

Passing to the neighboring Siaba Besar is highly recommended if diving is your thing. It’s one of highly popular easy dive, where you can spot pelagic, stingrays, and even dugongs. The site is also a favorite night dive among divers.

You can always opt for another island to explore if you prefer to stick with land, grass, and beaches. There are more islands in Flores than what you see in the itinerary samples, such as Bidadari, Seraya,  Kanawa , or Monkey island which each have its distinct beauty.

The next day, another adventure awaits. Start the day with something fresh, and docking to  Gili Lawa Darat  is on our suggestion. n fact, the island is one of the greatest places to catch a wonderful sunrise. Take a little tracking to the hills and enjoy an almost magical scenery when the sunrise from the horizon, slowly reveals the ocean and the bumpy hills of the archipelago from the darkness of the night. During January to May, you will be greeted with lush green grass covering the rolling hills, and the grass turns crisp and yellow during the dry season—turning the island into beautiful savannah.

An afternoon in the cruise clearly calls for a dip in the clear water, and it will be a great loss to miss a chance to meet the Manta. The  Manta Point  in Komodo National Park waters is the best place to see these intelligent creatures, as the water is rich with plankton - a delight for the Manta Rays. The Mantas are often traveling in a group and are present almost all year round. Lucky divers can even spend solid 30 minutes of interaction with the Mantas as long as the condition is right.

After spending first two days with water activities, your third day of excursion should be something fun. Why not visit the famous  Padar Island  today? I booked this tour in advance of my trip to Indonesia and, quite frankly, got scammed. Most people on the tour booked while they were in Indonesia and paid a third of what I paid. Also, when I arrived on the boat they had over sold the space in the “shared room” so I was given a chair cushion on the floor to sleep on- unacceptable (tour radar was very responsive in getting me a partial refund). Do not book this tour until the company has upgraded their boat. With all that being said, the Komodo Islands are beautiful and well worth a visit and the itinerary of this tour was great. Also, the food was amazing. Everything but the accommodation, but those are a deal breaker.

Wow! What a great three days abord a boat plying the waters of the Komodo National Park. Swimming with giant manta rays, getting close up to the Komodo Dragon, hiking to the top of Padar Island to take in the most spectacular vistas were the highlights of the trip. And we were all surprised by the quantity and truly excellent quality of our meals. Only negative (which should easily be corrected) was when one of our group injured a toe, there was no first aid kit on board. One from a nearby boat was used.

It was an absolutely fantastic adventure from the kayaking to the komodo dragons, to snorkling with manta rays and seeing the beautiful islands. The boat was great and so well kept (compared to many of the others sailing around). The whole crew and our guide Mattias made us feel so welcome. Mattias' knowledge of the best kayaking and snorkling spots is invaluable.

The tour covered all things that we wanted and so much more. We also got the option to do additional activities like extra surfing, meeting the medicine man from eat pray love, yoga and snorkelling with Whale sharks. The accommodations were basic but fine for a tour like this as they were all well located. The pub crawl was not made clear it was an additional cost but other than that all activities were reasonably priced if there was an additional cost. Wira was a fantastic host and was very knowledgeable and always on hand if needed regardless of the time! A fantastic trip I would thoroughly recommend to anyone!

6 Day Komodo Kayak Insight

Hi there. My family did this trip and loved it. Our kids (7 and 10) enjoyed learning about the Komodo Dragons, seeing 11 of them in real life on Rinca Island. We all had fun snorkelling in the crystal clear warm waters with heaps of coral and lots of fish to see. Sea kayaking was fun and achievable travelling between islands. We could jump back on the support boat any time for a rest if needed. Meals were lovely and the beach camping was great in large tents, all set-up by the crew. The crew kept us safe, kayaking with us if required, watching over us at all times. Our kids did the kayaking also resting when tired, sometimes jumping out and back onto the boat for a spot of sun-baking/relaxing on the top deck. Labuan Bajo is a lovely coastal city in Flores with the hustle and bustle of a working city combined with a relaxing tourist friendly vibe. Some great restaurants to visit also. Incredible adventure!! I personalised this tour to skip Bali and went to Ubud and Komodo. The hotels used were fantastic and very well located, with the views in Komodo out of this world. The driver guides for the day trips in Ubud friendly and knowledgeable and we saw so many cool places, they even took us to extra sights we wanted to see. The boat trip to Komodo was the highlight with the most stunning beaches I've ever seen, and of course the huge Komodo dragons. Communication from Vio Travel was excellent from start to finish, as well as there local contact via WhatsApp when in Indonesia, there was always someone to ask any questions or assist. Really good experience !!! Not everything was perfect and some things should be improve .... Definitely bit too expensive. I paid about £280 while my friend ( we were both at the same boat) paid 150 euros (less than £150). How come??? She booked it online 2 months after me. Same boat, same trip, different price... Overall: highly recommended but should cost no more than £170. Lovely views, the amazing sunrise at Padar island, crystal clear water and Komodo dragon...!!!! :))))

Beautiful boat - lovely gracious staff - nice food. Relaxing tour that had a mix of kayaking, snorkelling and sight seeing. One day was a bit windy so we hunkered down on the boat. Brought our own beer from town that we could keep in the cooler. Mix of tenting and staying on the boat was nice. Wandered through a small village and saw a school - wondered about the tokenism of donating to children here. Overall, thank you for an unforgettable 5 days!

Enfolded by the feral western end of Flores, washed by the lapping waves of the Flores Sea, and facing up to the wild islands of Komodo across the straits, Labuan Bajo certainly has a location that's worth writing home about. Three cops plead not guilty to corruption charges in Labuan

LABUAN (Mar 18): Three policemen pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here Monday to corruption charges amounting to RM2,000.

The first accused, Sahbudin Burhanudin, aged 41, and holding the rank of corporal, stands accused of soliciting RM500 from an individual as an inducement to not take action against a Person under Surveillance (OKP).

The alleged offence is said to have taken place in downtown Labuan in 2018.

The second and third accused, Muhamad Hazman Ramli, aged 31, a lance corporal, and Asrul Hisyam Ahmad, a corporal, were alleged to have conspired to accept RM1,500 from an individual as an inducement to not take action for an offence related to not being in possession of a driving licence and valid travel documents.

The alleged offence occurred near the town in 2022.

The charges against them were framed under Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which carries a maximum penalty of imprisonment for up to 20 years and a fine of five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if convicted.

In his ruling, Judge Jason Juga granted bail of RM10,000 for each accused, with RM2,000 to be deposited under local sureties.

Additionally, the accused were ordered to report to the nearest MACC office every two months and surrender their passports to the court.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government, through subsidies provided to MASwings for the Rural Air Services (RAS) route, has set a maximum fare of RM137 for flights between Kota Kinabalu and Labuan.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said this decision was one of the measures taken to reduce flight costs to and from Labuan, in addition to existing initiatives such as FlySiswa.

"These subsidies are intended to offset MASwings' operational losses in providing rural air services as part of Public Service Obligations, rather than directly influencing fare prices," he said during question and answer session in the Dewan Negara on Tuesday (March 19).

He said this in reply to Senator Tan Sri Anifah Aman's inquiry about the measures to reduce flight costs to and from Labuan. - Bernama
