We went on the Emmerdale Studio Experience tour - here's what you can expect from your visit

Watch out for the helicopter!

Emmerdale's Studio Tour: The Woolpack

Billed as The Emmerdale Studio Experience , the all-new tourist attraction promises a unique chance to step behind the scenes of the iconic soap - and Digital Spy were among the very first visitors to get an exclusive guided tour this week ahead of the official opening.

So, what's all the fuss about? Well, The Emmerdale Studio Experience is based at ITV's Burley Road Studios in central Leeds, where the show's indoor scenes all used to be filmed up until four years ago.

Now fully restored to all their Emmerdale glory, the Studios are packed with full-scale set replicas, specially preserved props, classic costumes and behind-the-scenes secrets. But does it match the hype?

Emmerdale Studio Tour: Production Room

In truth, we had some doubts before our visit. The highlight of the hugely popular Coronation Street Tour was undoubtedly the 'wow' moment of stepping out onto the Street and exploring the cobbles.

So - sets or no sets - it was difficult to see how the Emmerdale experience would compare without the chance to also explore the iconic village too. But, just like in any good Emmerdale episode, the Soap Gods had a few surprises up their sleeves...

Here's the basics: the Emmerdale tour is just a 10 minute cab ride away from Leeds Train Station in the city centre. Visitors are taken around the Studios by an expert guide and the tour takes around 1 hour 20 minutes from beginning to end.

It's not just about the sets, either. Once we were inside, one of our first stops was to a typical production room, where the date of Emmerdale 's launch - 16 October 1972 - was proudly on display. An early sign that the tour organisers had definitely done their research!

Emmerdale Studio Tour: Production room

Then it was onto the Costume Department, where we got to see everything from memorable wedding dresses to Edna's legendary hat.

And who wouldn't want to take a peek at Kerry Wyatt's outrageous wardrobe?

Some more insider gossip was then revealed during a quick trip to the make-up department - and yep, that's Kerry again as a willing model in the mirror.

Emmerdale Studio Tour: Costume department

The props department was also full of hidden gems which will delight hardcore fans, including the order of service from Donna Windsor's funeral, old collection boxes from the Valerie Pollard Foundation, and even a Gennie Sharma throwback with a very cute family photo.

Nice to know what happens to all of our favourite characters' belongings after they meet an untimely soapy fate.

Although, to be honest, it did make us mourn their losses all over again... #BringBackVal

Emmerdale Studio Tour: Props

Next came the studio sets themselves. On display are Bernice's salon, the Dingles' cottage, Smithy Cottage and The Woolpack, which are all set up exactly as they would be for a genuine Emmerdale scene.

If you went on the Corrie Tour, you probably think that you know the drill here, but the difference at Emmerdale is that the experience is much more interactive for visitors.

In Bernice's salon, there's a chance to play around with the lighting until it's exactly how you'd want it for an Emmerdale scene.

At the Dingles', you get an insight into filming techniques with two huge cameras on display.

Over at Smithy, you can even sit on Paddy's sofa and be filmed for your own scene - then watch it back and send it to your email account so you can keep it forever. Just don't fight over who gets the best lines...

Emmerdale Studio Tours: The Dingles'

Making your way through the sets, it's sometimes easy to forget that these aren't actually being used in the current show. They certainly haven't just been thrown together, such is the attention to detail involved.

Aspiring TV producers can even get a chance to edit some Emmerdale , switching between cameras on an interactive monitor to get the best angles on a pre-recorded scene.

As we mentioned, you can't visit the Emmerdale village itself with these tour tickets, but you do get the next best thing by walking through an amazing quarter-size replica.

Of course, it wouldn't be Emmerdale without a celebration of some big stunts too. One room - which might as well have been called the Debbie Dingle Room Of Doom - was full of costumes, props and photos from The Woolpack siege and the helicopter crash.

Charley Webb needed multiple dresses for Debbie's ill-fated wedding day and some of them are on display right here, in various states of destruction.

Emmerdale Studio Tour: Editing game

While we wouldn't want to spoil all of the surprises, there's also an exciting chance to experience some Emmerdale special effects of your very own...

The highlight of the visit, of course, is a trip to The Woolpack set and it's by far the most impressive. Soap sets always seem smaller in real life but this one is the major exception, with all of its nooks and crannies.

Here you can have some downtime to relax, get a picture behind the bar and even peruse the food menu to see just how much Chas is charging these days.

Emmerdale's Studio Tour: The Woolpack

Although this marks the end of the official tour, there's also plenty of reason to stick around for a while longer. There's an exclusive Emmerdale gift shop - kitted out to look like David Metcalfe's shop - and a cafe on site serving good old-fashioned Yorkshire grub.

So is it worth a visit? We say yes if you're a big fan - you get to see the soap in a whole new light and get a unique insight into the production process that you simply can't get anywhere else.

Fans will also love the mix of Emmerdale past and present, with memories of old favourites like Betty, Seth and Edna mixed with nods to the newer faces like Kerry and the Bartons.

Emmerdale studio tour: Gift shop

Over time it'd be nice to see even more sets included - we'd love to see Bob's cafe and Home Farm next time.

But in the meantime, we're off to brush up on our acting skills to be more prepared for our next visit - Smithy Cottage won't know what's hit it...

Tickets for the Emmerdale Studio Experience are available via Ticketmaster , priced at £21 each.

Emmerdale Studio Experience

Emmerdale is filmed in Leeds and the Emmerdale Studio Experience lets you see behind the scenes in the original studios were the show was filmed. Tours are also available of the village set near Harewood House.

It is an excellent day out if you’re a fan of the show.

Emmerdale is a popular television programme that has been running since 1972. It is filmed at studios in Leeds and also in an outdoor set on the Harewood Estate north of Leeds. Both the Emmerdale Studio Experience and Emmerdale Studio Tour let you see behind the scenes at both the studio complex and the outdoor village set. (Photo: Mark Stevenson [CC BY-SA 2.0])

What to see at the Emmerdale Studio Experience

The studio experience is a 1,300m² (14,000 sq ft) attraction housed inside ITV’s Burley Road Studios.

The Emmerdale Studio Experience is located in the old studios where the show was originally filmed.

Although the show is now filmed in a different studio, the Emmerdale Studio Experience is an exact replica of the original set. Visitors can see the individual sets where the show was filmed including the interior of the Woolpack. There are also some interactive features where visitors can play with the on-set lighting.

The attraction also includes a quarter-size replica of the Emmerdale village set.

What to see at the Emmerdale Village Tour

The television show’s outdoor scenes are filmed in a village set near Harewood House north of Leeds. You will need to take this tour if you want to see the village at full size.

This tour includes a 90-minute guided tour of the outdoor areas of the television set, which allows you to see the exterior set of Cafe Mainstreet, David’s Shop and The Woolpack.

Visiting the Emmerdale Studio Experience

The Emmerdale Studio Experience is located at ITV’s studio complex on Burley Road, just a short walk west from Leeds city centre. The studio complex is a 20-minute walk from Leeds railway station or a six-minute bus ride from The Headrow.

The tour is wheelchair accessible but there is only space for one wheelchair user per tour.

There is a cafe and a gift shop in the studio complex.

A visit to the Emmerdale Studio Experience is by a 90-minute guided tour, but visitors should allow around two hours for their visit.

The Emmerdale Village Tour

The tour departs from the Burley Road Studios complex where visitors take a coach transfer to the outdoor film set near Harewood House around 13km (8 miles) north of Leeds.

It is not possible to visit the village independently as the village set is a closed site that is accessible only to visitors on the tour and people working on the television programme.

Tours only operate on selected weekends.

Would highly recommend the tour with its new additions including the precinct, police station, exhibition of artefacts and replicas of the interior of the Rovers Return and Roy’s Rolls.

Our guide Sid was excellent – amusing and very informative. All the staff we came across were enthusiastic and friendly.

We had a lovely time, our guide Daniel was brilliant, very informative about the show past and present. We loved our time there had plenty of opportunities for photos, I enjoyed the exhibition at the end seeing all the outfits from characters and the rovers and Roy’s rolls set up. Fantastic would highly recommend.

The Coronation Street tour is great for fans of the show. You get to walk along the famous cobbles and see the outside sets. We chose to go on a star tour and met Andy Whyment who plays Kirk. It was good to see some peices from the set too. Our tour guide Callum was very knowledgeable and made our tour enjoyable. We would definitely recommend this tour.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

Moscow hopes to become first 5G city by 2020

One of the 5G network will be a speed of 100 megabits per second for residents of large cities.

One of the 5G network will be a speed of 100 megabits per second for residents of large cities.

The Moscow mayor's office is in talks with a consortium of mobile operators over the possibility of developing 5G networks, the Kommersant daily reported on April 7. The government is determined to make the project an attractive investment for the operators and hopes the Russian capital will have 5G networks in 2020.

Moscow’s telecom market is divided between four major players: Russian companies Megfon, VimpelCom, and MTS, plus European Tele2 – which entered the fray in 2015. A query from RBTH about a 5G consortium received an optimistic response from Megafon and Tele2, but VimpelCom and MTS decided not to answer.

"The consortium may lay the foundation for the joint development of this technology by all the operators," said Konstantin Prokshin, head of strategic communications at Tele2.

Proposed ‘big data’ law will empower Russians in the digital realm

The support of the authorities is important for telecom operators because such issues as equipment deployment and power supply can often be solved only with the government’s help, explained Yulia Dorokhina, head of the press service at Megafon.

2018 World Cup and rivalry with London

City of London Corp., which runs London's financial center at the municipal level, has announced its plans to switch to the 5G standard as soon as it becomes available, writes The Financial Times. The company has signed a multimillion dollar wireless Internet upgrade contract with Cornerstone, which is owned by the Vodafone and O2 telecom operators.

Global capitals will be competing with each other over which of them will become the first to switch to 5G, said Konstantin Prokshin. The pace at which new technologies are introduced suggests that Moscow can indeed become one of the leaders in the development of 5G, he added. "Moscow's mobile market is one of the most developed in the world, with a low average cost of services and high quality," Prokshin pointed out.

During the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Megafon plans to set up 5G test zones, Yulia Dorokhina said. "One of the main advantages offered by the new network is its huge capacity. The client receives high-quality signal in places of mass gathering of people – stadiums, railway stations, traffic jams," she added.

What is known about 5G today

Exact 5G specifications are still being developed, but one of them – as identified by the Next Generation Mobile Networks alliance – will be a speed of 100 megabits per second for residents of large cities.

"So far, some disparate research experiments have been conducted. What exactly the 'fifth generation' will provide is not quite clear," said Vladimir Korovkin, head of Innovations and Digital Technologies at the Moscow School of Management Skolkovo.

He added that the focus of 5G developers is not to increase the bandwidth of the channel, but to provide a guaranteed high-speed signal and density of coverage. "Both these features are important for mass use of M2M (machine to machine) networks," Korovkin explained.

One of the crucial questions is who will be producing the technical equipment and how the link to international networks will work. For the first time, Chinese companies, in particular Huawei, are taking an active part in creating a new standard, Korovkin pointed out. For example, Megafon has successfully tested mobile data transmission at 1 Gbit/s using Huawei equipment and at 5 Gbit/s during network equipment tests with the Finnish company Nokia, Dorokhina said.
