Santa Eulària des Riu is a coastal town on the southeastern seaboard of the Spanish island of Ibiza. Home of some of the island's greatest 'fiestas'; like the centuries old 'First Sunday in May' (Catalan: Primer Duimenge d' Mai), and the Easter Procession. It is home to a famous yacht harbour, which is small and surrounded by shops and top-notch restaurants.
Understand [ edit ]
Santa Eulària is the third largest town on the island. It was home to about 36,000 people in 2019.
The town sits next to a wide bay with the promontory of Punta Arabí at the east end of the Bay. Also at the eastern end of the bay is new harbour, mariner called Port Esportiu which is full of restaurants, shops and bars. The town has two beaches which are kept clean and tidy and have gently sloping sands and are ideal for young families.
The 15th-century hill-top fortress church, Puig de Missa overlooks the entire town and bay at the western end of the bay. The hill is dotted with apartments, hotels and private houses, and at night is dotted with the dwellings lights. Just a bit below on the hill there is Can Ros , a "living museum", which will give you an idea of how life was on the island (for centuries) before the tourist boom.
Santa Eulalia has long been home to artists and writers and personalities from around the globe seeking tranquility and anonymity.

The town streets run grid like from the ‘Plaça d’Espanya’ with the ‘Carrer Saint Jaume’ running west to east. The ‘Carrer da Sant Vincent’ runs parallel, one street back from ‘Carrer Saint Jaume’ with the western end of ‘Plaça d’Espanya’. This street is pedestrianized and is filled with typical tavernas and restaurants. There are also one or two lively bars.

- At the centre of the town on the Plaça d’Espanya is the Ajuntament (town hall) which is now one of the last historical buildings of the town. The present building, which has been renovated, dates from 1795 and reflects the typical architecture of the period on the island.
- In front of the Ajuntament is a small square which has a fountain with a stone surround which faces the busy main street, Carrer Saint Jaume . Behind the fountain is a stone monument, erected by the city of Palma, Mallorca to thank and honour the local fishermen who, on 17 January 1913, rescued victims of the shipwrecked steamboat Mallorca which had run aground on a reef near the rocky inlet of Redona at Punta Arabí. The Carrer Saint Jaume is full of stores, banks, bars and restaurants.
- The Passeig de s’Alamera is an attractive thoroughfare which runs south from the Plaça d’Espanya down to the seafront. This boulevard has a tree-lined central pedestrianised area with gardens. In the summer this shady ‘Ramblas’ is lined with market stalls selling jewellery, sarongs, tie-dye Thai garb and trinkets of all kinds.
- At the southern end of Passeig de s’Alamera is Santa Eulalia's harbourfront, the Passeig Marítim , with views of the bay. Running in either direction is a paved and landscaped promenade. Below the promenade are the resorts two sandy beaches which have safe designated bathing areas which in the season are patrolled by lifeguards. Behind the promenade the bay is ringed by concrete apartment blocks, some of which have shops, bars, café and restaurants opening on to the promenade.

Santa Eulalia del Rio The family town par excellence
Santa Eulalia del Río, or as locals call it, Santa Eulària des Riu, is a village located on eastern Ibiza . This town is celebrated as the most stress-free and family area of the island.
This area of the island is one of the most visited by families and couples looking for a place to stay away from the hectic nightlife.
The nature and structure of the town is especially characteristic of the Ibizan architecture and radiates a special charm. The town developed around a 16th century church built on top of Puig de Missa and took its name after the only river flowing through the Balearic Islands .
What to see
Being one of the main towns on the island, Santa Eulalia del Río has a large number of touristic attractions that are certain to move visitors.
Here are some of the places you cannot miss out on:
Marina Santa Eulalia is located in a natural and unique enclave, only 14 kilometres from Ibiza town , surrounded by spectacular coves and mountains. It is definitely a fantastic plan to visit some of the nearby beaches and relax by sailing in the crystal clear waters. Moreover, in order to enjoy some leisure hours on land, the port has a complete commercial area that is nonetheless quiet. In fact, this is one of the towns, along with the northern part of the island, chosen by many locals to avoid the crowds in high season.
The promenade
For those who love walking and sunset strolls, this is undoubtedly a great option due to its important size, spaciousness, comfort, and beautiful beach views. It is perfect for families and couples who want to relax a bit after a long day under the sun by enjoying the great variety of places, restaurants and shops.
The Old Town
Santa Eulària des Riu not only has a key location next to some of the most gorgeous beaches and coves on the island, but also the town itself has a striking and distinctive old town to explore. The small Ibizan-style houses that have been adding one to another over the years have shaped the town around the church and are responsible today for the distinctive and special atmosphere present.
Santa Eulalia Church, ‘ Puig de Missa ’, is another of the most visited touristic spots in town. It is a dazzling fortress-temple with a tower dating 16th century and stunning views. It was built on the top of a hill with the same name and laid the foundation for the town to come about.
And finally, a place that you might not find in travel guides but that you should not overlook: Santa Eulària des Riu Pont Vell. Also known as Pont des Molins , it was the old main entrance to the village and a constant target for pirate looters, since it had easy access and was constantly used by peasants coming in and out. Today, those who cross it do so on foot and peacefully, since it is now a pedestrian bridge with the river flowing under .
This image offers a wonderful and hassle-free walk that can be enjoyed as a family, along its bank. In fact, Santa Eularia is one of the towns in Ibiza that can be proud of having one of the best settings to walk on the island. The fact is that there are not many places where you can start a walking route by contemplating Mediterranean beaches and finish the tour inland on the banks of a river.
Cycle routes
Bicycle tourism is increasingly becoming the preferred activity on the island for many visitors and as it happens, Santa Eulalia has various cycle routes. They are in a privileged natural environment and allow you to get to know Ibiza from a different and more personal angle.
Where to eat
It is true that Santa Eulalia has a wide selection of restaurants, offering gastronomy of all kinds. Without a doubt, the town stands out for its restaurants and local bars serving typical Ibizan food that will make your day. The vast majority have very nice terraces and open spaces for you to enjoy the food and the great atmosphere together.
Where to lodge
When deciding where to stay, you will find several possibilities at your fingertips in Santa Eulària d'es Riu: from affordable hostels with basic services to the most sophisticated hotels that offer commodities such as swimming-pools, spas, or other leisure activities.
In short, the town offer ranges from establishments aimed at the youngest public, to families or couples with different needs and expectations, but who are above all, seeking tranquillity and pleasing service. In any case, you can always find accommodation to suit you and your budget.

In addition to the stunning beaches and coves near Santa Eulalia, the town has a beautiful promenade lined with palm trees. It is also known for its excellent gastronomy and you can visit some of Ibiza's best restaurants in the Yacht Marina area.
It is also worth visiting the old quarter which is full of charming white houses that are scattered around the hill of Puig de Missa . At the top of the hill is the Parish Church , where you can enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the surrounding area.

The Best Things to do in Santa Eulària, Ibiza with Kids
Known for its vibrant music scene, late-night parties, and celeb-studded yachts, I discovered that Ibiza, Spain is also a haven for families – particularly those that visit the resort area of Santa Eulària .
Located an easy 25-minute drive from Ibiza’s airport, Santa Eulària’s beaches, bike trails, and charming towns make it an inviting family destination. After five fun-filled days on the island, here are some of my favourite things to do in Santa Eulària, Ibiza with kids.
Kayak Along the Coast
Santa Eulària’s protected beaches, crystal clear water, and stunning scenery make kayaking an excellent option for families that want to see more of the coastline. Our guide from Club Nautico Santa Eulalia met us at the beach with single kayaks and associated gear. While we paddled through the turquoise waters, the guide cruised along beside us with a motorised dinghy in case the kids wanted to take a break.
Charter a Boat
If you want to explore more of Ibiza by water, charter a boat at Santa Eulària’s centrally located marina and cruise to historic sites, picturesque coves, and family-friendly snorkel areas. Read more about our unforgettable day on the water with a skippered yacht from Náutica Santa Eulalia here .
Spend a Day (or Two) at the Beach
Plan to spend a day or more at one of Santa Eulària’s spectacular beaches. With a summertime water temperature hovering around 25 C, the sparkling Mediterranean Sea draws even the most reluctant swimmer in for a dip.
We spent a day at The Chiringuito beach club where you can rent lounge chairs, splash about in the crystalline water, dine in the beachside restaurant, and order food and drinks from your lounge chair. There are many beaches to choose from along Santa Eulària’s 30 km of coastline, with full-service beach clubs like The Chirinquito, or more secluded options.
Visit Santa Gertrudis
There is more than beaches and ocean activities on Ibiza. Be sure to visit the charming hill town of Santa Gertrudis where you can wander the pedestrian-only shopping area, dine on thinly sliced jamón (cured Spanish ham) at Bar Costa , and mingle with locals at the nearby playground.
Cycle on the Island
The abundance of cycling opportunities on Ibiza appears to be a well-kept secret – at least for now. Bike routes include quiet country roads lined with chest-high wild rosemary bushes, trails meandering through pine-scented forests, and dramatic paths skirting along the coast. It’s paradise if you like to explore a destination on two wheels.
We spent a few hours with a guide and high-quality rental bikes from Kandani , and there was a strong consensus that we should ride more on Ibiza.
Travel Tips – Ibiza with Kids
- The Santa Eulària resort area is approximately 20 km from the island’s airport (IBZ). The central town of Santa Eulària des Riu has inviting cafes, interesting shops, a palm-lined promenade, and a 300-foot accessible, smoke-free beach (the first and only smoke-free beach on the island). Visit the Santa Eulària website for more information about this fabulous, family-friendly destination.
- I traveled with a tween and teen and many of these activities are suitable for or, can be tailored for younger or older children.
- Contact Club Nautico Santa Eulalia for more information on kayaking along Ibiza’s spectacular coast.
- Visit the Náutica Santa Eulalia website to charter a boat on Ibiza.
- The Chiringuito beach club offers a children’s play area.
- Bar Costa is located at Plaça de l’Esglèsia, s/n, 07819 Santa Gertrudis de Fruitera, Illes Balears, Spain.
- Contact Kandani Bikes, located in Santa Eulalia des Riu, to organize rental bikes and a guide. I cycle all over the world, and the guide from Kandani was one of the best.
Have you visited Ibiza with kids or without? What are your favourite activities on the island?
Our recent visit to Santa Eulària, Ibiza was in collaboration with the Santa Eulària Tourism Office. As always, my opinions are my own. If I don’t enjoy a destination or experience, I won’t recommend it.

I love kayaking! I normally do it on a lake but it would be so fun to do in these beautiful clear waters!
I like that you have made travel guide options for a family in Ibeza. It may be the first article on the island that does not involve the resort infamy. It is great Nancy! Nice touch!
What a great thing to do, taking the kids kayaking, and brilliant that they have a boat on standby in case they get tired…does that work for the adults too? 😉
What a lovely photos! and a relly good inforamtion. Traveling with kids can be fun but also difficult is we can´t find something interesting for them.
We’re going to Spain (and Ibiza) in November. We don’t have kids, but we’re not really shoppers or partiers either, so the things you mentioned would be great activities for us too. I’m sure we’ll do at least a handful of them.
Wow chartering a boat seems like such a luxury! I bet it would be an amazing way to see more of the island.
Wow! What a beautiful place! I would love the bicycling, as I often do it here in San Diego. I can see why your family voted for more of that!
I haven’t thought of Ibiza as a kid-friendly destination. Your suggestions are great!
You’ve definitely changed my perspective, not going to lie, I didn’t picture Ibiza as a family friendly destination – my main thoughts go straight to the party scene. But it really does sound like it has a lot to offer if you’re traveling with kids. Thanks for changing my outlook!
If you had shown me the photos and asked me to name the place I would not have picked it as Ibiza! I’ve always pictured Ibiza as a party place. Looks like a cool spot.
Your photos look beautiful!! Never thought of it as a family friendly place but looks like I was wrong. Beach kayaking- sounds like my kind of adventure!
Never knew that Ibiza has so much to offer. I thought Ibiza is all about Beaches. Thanks for this detailed post.
I would never have thought of Ibiza as Family Friendly! Its nice to know there are beautiful spots like this away from the party scene!
Looks like there’s plenty to do in Ibiza to keep everyone in the family busy and interested. I haven’t been but I’ll be adding it to my must-visit list.

The municipality of Santa Eulària des Riu covers the eastern-central part of the island. Measuring barely 570 km 2 , the island’s distances are pint-sized, allowing visitors to travel to the north, south and west in a short time, for which reason diverse excursions will fit into a single day.
