Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do

by Meghan Klave Filed Under: things to do

Bucket lists are very personal that require a lot of thought. The point is to experience something fully. Reach beyond your comfort zone and go for it! I’ve created this bucket list, with much care, focusing on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

*this post contains affiliate links, which means I may be compensated by sales with no additional cost to you whatsoever*

Not all of the items are appropriate for everyone. It’s certainly not “one size fits all.” And to be completely honest I’m not even certain I’ll be able to complete all 50. But I promise to try, since the whole purpose is to push yourself physically and mentally.

I feel like the older I get the less adventurous I become. Why? I think, like many people, we get comfortable in the routines of life. We choose the things that come easy because we’ve already done them…it’s always easier next time. I’m done living within my bubble!

My friends are sometimes subject to my rantings and speeches about being sick of simply existing . I want to EXPERIENCE! The conclusion that I live where others vacation recently came to me and I realized just how much beauty rests right here in my own backyard.

What are we waiting for people?!

It’s not like I have to travel great distances, hopping flights and packing for a huge endeavor. Yes, the Upper Peninsula is rather large but everything is within driving distance for me. Why not figure out a way to bring it all to you ?

I understand that there are people who may read this that likely do not live here, or even close by, but I’d encourage you to consider Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for your next big adventure. There are some pretty incredible things here. Things I didn’t even realize existed until starting the research on this project.

Are you in for an adventure?

Here’s to the part of this great state that you might’ve forgotten about!

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List

#1 view the northern lights.

Most people have seen the spectacular photos but have you ever experienced the Aurora Borealis for yourself? Some of the best views can be found in dark sky areas along Lake Superior and I’ve recently learned that there’s an app for that !

#2 Visit some Ice Caves

Photo by habibi photography via things to do in the u.p..

I will admittedly say I’m not a fan of winter…I know, weird since I live way up here but I’m trying to learn to love it. Experiencing some of the most amazing views the cold has to offer is exactly what the soul needs to become a believer that the icy season is totally worth it. I’m actually looking forward to bringing out those snowshoes I’ve had hiding away in my closet for the last 3 years. The most well known are the Eben and Grand Island ice caves.

#3 Visit Mackinac Island

day-trips-on-mackinac-island. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

#4 Wader fishing

There are so many things on this list that take you near water…we are surrounded by it here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula so may I suggest you get yourself an affordable, waterproof, durable camera . I will also tell you that a decent pair of waders is a must! Whether fishing in a river or one of our great lakes, it’s incredible even if you aren’t catching anything.

Homemade Michigan map cutting board. Made in Michigan

#5 See the Soo Locks, Sault Ste Marie

So I’ve been told it’s a sight to see and I’ve heard it’s dripping with history. Some massive and genius engineering can be witnessed while allowing the passage of 1,000 ft freighters that carry some 72,000 tons of cargo. See the new observation deck and pretty park nearby that’s perfect for a picnic.

#6 Climb Castle Rock, St. Ignace

I’ve actually done this one before but I was so terrified and paralyzed with my fear of heights that I couldn’t get a grip and enjoy the view. My goal this time? Conquer that fear, look around and take in those fall colors – cause I’m thinking that could be the best time to go. Spectacular! Also, let’s keep in mind that there are much scarier things on this list, this is simply a warm up.

#7 Take a Pictured Rocks kayak tour, Munising

Pictured Rocks Kayaking into the arch

If you live in Michigan and are on Facebook …ok who’s not a Facebook yet? I’m certain you’ve seen someone share a photo or have scrolled passed a promoted post for one of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula most notable and recognizable features, Pictured Rocks of Munising. And I’m here to tell ya there’s no better way to see one of natures best master pieces.

#8 The Deer Ranch, St. Ignace

This little gem is located just west of the Mackinac Bridge on U.S. 2. Seems to me that the best time to go may be in the spring when the new fawns are being bottle fed.

#9 Oswald’s Bear Ranch, Newberry

The Upper Peninsula is home to 90 percent of Michigan’s entire population of black bears and Oswald’s is the largest, bear only, ranch in the U.S. Starting as a sanctuary for orphaned cubs it has continued to grow each year.

#10 Garlyn Zoo, Naubinway

Nature path via garlyn zoo.

Don’t expect to see zebra and elephants but this little zoo has a great setting tucked among the pines with wooded trails. Home to some of the Upper Peninsula’s native creatures and others including exotics like tigers, lemur and camel.

#11 Do the Mighty Mac Bridge Walk

Every year on Labor Day thousands of people come together to walk the Mackinac Bridge . It used to be the only time one could travel on foot to experience this grand beauty in such a way. They now have the tractor parade, fall bridge race and an ORV drive, among others!

#12 Snowmobile the Mackinac Island ice bridge

This has just fascinated me ever since I learned that it existed. The ice bridge is formed between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. It doesn’t form every year because, as you can imagine, the conditions have to be just right. If you’re in the area and happen to be riding a snowmobile on one of those “right conditions” kind of day, then perhaps you’ll follow the ice bridge and experience Mackinac Island during the winter. *This is at your own risk! Please use common sense! This writer and blog/website takes no responsibility for any loss, injury or incident…whatsoever.

#13 Hike Tahquamenon Falls

Photo credit: great lakes waterfalls & beyond.

Approximately 4.5 miles, this hike is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. With Tahquamenon Falls only about 30 minutes from Twin Cedars Resort , I’m not exactly sure what I’m waiting for! Spring will be popping with new life, summer would be luscious, fall simply gorgeous and winter would be a wonderland. Must do! And I just bought these hiking shoes for the adventure:)

#14 Cut River Bridge

A quick stop along your journey on U.S. 2 northwest of St. Ignace. Don’t miss the wooden staircase leading to the river below. A little treasure that many of the passing cars are clueless to.

#15 North Country Trail’s Niagara Escarpment near Trout Lake

Hike, snowshoe or cross country ski. Connect with nature within 5 minutes from here .

#16 Kayak around Mackinac Island

Photo via mackinac kayak.

Yes, the island ends up on this list in several places, but it’s just so darn gorgeous that I can’t help myself! There are many ways to see it but this seems rather unique and sounds pretty special. There is a tour you can do that I found by simply searching on Trip Advisor and I would highly recommend these essentials for any Michigan kayaking adventure!

#17 Zip-lining at the Mystery Spot, St. Ignace

I probably should’ve been here by now. The Mystery Spot will be a mystery until I visit and I’m not sure what it’s all about…mystery? I’m not sure if the zip-line is worth it and I can’t say it’s something to write home about but I’ll be certain to let you all know when I finally just do the thing. I will admit, however, that my fear of heights is already kicking in.

#18 Miner’s Falls, Munising

miners-falls. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Miners Falls photo via Thrillist

If you’re a Michigander you can just feel the natural draw you have to water. Any kind of water. Which is good since we’re surrounded by it and since it’s said that if you’re in Michigan then you can’t be any more than 2 miles away from a body of it in any given direction. There are many waterfalls dotted all over the Upper Peninsula and all over this list.

#19 Kitch-Iti-Kipi (The Big Spring), Manistique

One I’ve already done in my past, long before this blog was ever dreamed up, which means I must return! It’s totally worth it and can be a quick stop along the journey. Yes, there are massive fish that you can see from 60 feet above but don’t even dream of bringing your fishing pole!

#20 Hike Escarpment trail at Porcupine Mtns, Lake of the Clouds

Lake of the Clouds Upper Peninsula. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Escarpment Trail Lake of the Clouds via My Michigan Trips

Said to be one of the most scenic short hikes in all of Michigan. With a name like “Lake of the Clouds” it has to be stunning! The trail is about 4 miles, with loose rocks and roots – hoping these will come in handy .

#21 Visit the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum, Paradise

Lake Superior is considered the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and is the world’s third-largest freshwater lake by volume and the largest by volume in North America. One must understand the danger this great lake carries. I mean when there’s a famous song about a ship wreck on this massive body of water you have to think how important the history is . Just visit the museum you won’t regret it!

best places to visit upstate michigan

#22 Chapel Falls hike, Grand Marais

Another falls…but it’s near Grand Marais, which apparently is an incredible stop along the Lake Superior shoreline and I was shocked to learn how close it is . There are many falls in this area, want to do them all ?

#23 Jump off the Pier, Grand Marais

I’ve lived in several areas that have lighthouse piers and never once have I had the guts to jump. Many michiganders know the feeling of a summertime pier jump, guess we better get on the bandwagon!

#24 Sip and Sail Sunset Cruise from Mackinac Island

Photo via mackinawcity.com.

This just sounds fun and beautiful. Imagine a glass of wine (or sip of your choice), the incredible backdrop of Mackinac Island and her sister bridge with a sunset topping it all off. Take an Arnold Transit Co. boat from Mackinac Island for this sweet summer, or fall, ending to your day. *Update* Arnold Ferries were sold to Star Line Ferry Company during the fall/winter season 2016. It appears Star Line will continue sunset cruises and include fireworks cruises every Saturday from July through September.

#25 Point Iroquois Light Station

Although it’s no longer an active lighthouse the history and views make it worthy of a stop. Explore the house, traverse the wooden staircase down the bluff then take in the shoreline of Lake Superior.

#26 Whitewater raft Piers Gorge

A rough section of the Menominee River located near Iron Mountain. For some reason I always thought I’d have to travel to some river in an eastern state to get to experience the thrill of whitewater rafting. Welp, it’s right here folks!

#27 Climb the Pine Mt Ski Jump, Iron Mt.

pine-mountain-ski-jump-view-from-the-top. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

View from the top by Things to do in the U.P.

Those who fear heights will be challenged with this one! Known as one of the tallest man-made ski jumps in the world, it hosts one epic event spread over a weekend in February with tailgating and nearly 20,000 spectators. A fantastic thing to witness but if you’re interested in the views, go for a climb yourself during warmer months and behold the beauty. *Update – I was recently told that climbing the ski jump is illegal…bummer, if true, but I’ve left it on this list for now until I know for sure.

#28 Eat a 5 course meal at the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island

With all this adventure I’m craving a bit of fancy.

#29 Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary, Copper Harbor

estivant-pines. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Estivant Pines photo by Superior Spirit

The enormity of the pines here have to be seen up close and personal. Many of the trees are 600 years old and this sanctuary is among the last of Michigan’s old growth white pines.

#30 Sunset/Full Moon Kayak Tour, Hessel

If you can plan it just right a sunset view with the rising full moon would be a great experience. I can just picture the sparkling moonlit water and the sounds of nature. Ahhh…

#31 Lakenenland Sculpture Park, Marquette

A free park open 7 days a week with sculptures made out of scrap iron. Tom Lakenen, an iron worker with a calling to make art moved his pieces to this 37 acre property after his hometown made him remove them from his lawn. Possibly a good move all around…his neighbors are happy and so are the visitors that can enjoy the whimsy-ness .

#32 Visit Isle Royale

Isle Royal Upper Peninsula, MI

Isle Royale via NPS.gov

This national park is touted as “the edge of wilderness.” The park is open from May – October because of the harsh weather during the rest of the year and you must obtain a special permit to explore the island. Certainly an adventure I’ll use a guide for. This is one of the scarier Upper Peninsula destinations for me. Can’t wait!

#33 Sail on Lake Superior

Sailing has always sparked some curiosity in me. Those big wooden vessels, out on the open sea with wind guiding your path – just sounds magical!

#34 Take a U.P. Wine Tour

Just to name a few…Leigh’s Garden Winery of Escanaba,  End of the Road Winery in Germfask and Northern Sun Winery located in Bark River. Currently there are around 8 or 9 wineries in the Upper Peninsula and since I love wine so much I’ll be making my way around, then sharing it with you.

drink-local-ad

#35 Taste U.P. Craft Beer

Michigan is known for it’s craft beer so if you’re not too hungover from your wine tour make your way around for the beer of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Breweries stretch from east to west with several in-between. I’d love to visit all of them but if you’d like to get a taste of all of them in one spot try out the Annual U.P. Fall Beer Festival in Marquette .

#36 Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Escanaba

We’ve talked about getting paddle boards here at Twin Cedars Resort and I’m looking forward to that. But experiencing it along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Escanaba, on a bright sun shiny day, makes me think I’d never even realize the great workout to be had while having so much fun.

#37 Attend the U.P. State Fair, Escanaba

Escanaba again? Yep! Who knew the Upper Peninsula had it’s very own state fair? See, I told you the U.P. was like it’s own separate state. Plan your trip for August!

#38 U.P. Lake Michigan Beaches

lake-michigan-upper-peninsula. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Miles of sandy shoreline and sparkling waters, Lake Michigan tends to be a bit warmer if you’re into taking a dip, than Lake Superior is. Remember these are very large bodies of water with strong currents, be careful and enjoy the beach!

#39 Laughing Whitefish Falls

It’s possible that I’ll just take a full weekend and do a falls tour around the Upper Peninsula. Oh all the beautifulness…

#40 Karst Cave Tour, Trout Lake

Holy crap this really is in my backyard! When I asked Bob about this one he didn’t seem fazed. I say something like, “did you know there are caves right here in Trout Lake?” And he says, “yeah at the Fiborn rock quarry.” And I say, “how come I didn’t know and how come you never took me there?” He says, “I looked for them once but couldn’t find them.” So I found a tour company because I’m thinking you shouldn’t do this one alone.

#41 Drummond Island Cliff Overlook Hike

Drummond island cliff via u.p. ecotours.

This island has been on my list for a long time. I can’t be sure all that’s there so I figure I’ll plan this trip then report on any other cool things to see while visiting.

#42 Watch a meteor shower in the dark sky at Twin Cedars Resort

The wonder of a shooting star…Get a guide to all the happenings beyond our atmosphere here to know the best times to star gaze.

#43 Underground Mine Tour, Greenland

Several different types of tours to choose from. I’m thinking of going with the one that has us propelling down a mine shaft…there goes my heights fear again…and enclosed places if that’s an issue for you. Hey go big or go home right? That’s actually not necessary through Adventure Mine Tours , but they don’t call it adventure for nothin!

Michigan Map wrap bracelet

#44 Hungarian Falls

Since you’ll be on that side of the state anyway…behold the beauty!

#45 Glass Bottom Shipwreck Boat Tour, Munising

The history of shipwrecks on Lake Superior is part of the culture up here, see them where they continue to rest. And with the Pictured Rocks National lake shore in the background you’ll always have something fantastic to look at. This one’s like 2 in 1. Hmmm…sounds good!

#46 Agawa Canyon Tour Train

agawa-train-tour

Agawa Canyon Tour photo via Algoma Country.com

Canadian, yes, but you still have to go through the Upper Peninsula to get there and you’ll get some unforgettable views. Taking a train seems so timeless, something I’ve always wanted to do. My husband says he’s done this tour before, I’m thinking it’s high time he take me on a little excursion. *Update: WE DID IT!

#47 Thomas Rock Scenic Overlook, Big Bay Marquette

A short, easy nature trail with signs identifying the natural growth and wildlife. Education and adventure – right up my alley!

#48 Mt. Baldy

mount-baldy. Michigan’s Upper Peninsula Bucket List, 50 things to do for everyone whether you are adventurous prefer easier exploration. #TheTwinCedars #Michigantravel #Michigan #UpperPeninsula #adventure #bucketlist #explore #outdoors

Climb at Mt. Baldy via SummitPost.org

Also known as Mt. Lookout, an approximate 3 mile gradual incline hike that is so worth it!

#49 Take a plane to Mackinac Island

Little planes to a little island. Sounds scary to me but I have friends that do this all the time. Thinking the aerial view would be pretty fantastic too!

#50 Jump off the rocks and swim at Devil’s Washtub, Copper Harbor

I’m not one who would generally jump into dark waters that I’m unfamiliar with, so of course I had to add this to the list since it’s all about overcoming fears and just “doing the thing.”

There’s a lot of adventure to be had, thanks for coming along! Feeling generous? Share your own U.P. adventures using #miupbucketlist on Instagram , Facebook or Twitter so we can see!

9 best places to visit in Upper Peninsula Michigan (prettiest!) ⚓ Circle the UP road trip around the Great Lakes of Michigan ⚓ MI travel blog

Michigander here!

Proud to bring you the prettiest places to visit in the Upper Peninsula with some of the best views that you will find in all of Michigan!

The State of Michigan’s slogan is “Pure Michigan” and you can get plenty of that with a trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan aka a trip to the UP!

This is remote Michigan!

I did a 2-week road trip around the Upper Peninsula, and here are things to know about!

Michigan road trip: Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan on a UP road trip. Most scenic beautiful views in the UP. Michigan travel blog. Michigan vacation blog

This UP road trip route will start from the Mackinac Bridge, which is the eastern Upper Peninsula , so it can work in this order when you’re coming from the Mackinac Bridge and the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.

If you’re driving to the UP from the Wisconsin side, which is the western Upper Peninsula , the Porcupine Mountains can be your first stop.

No matter which direction you drive, you can make many scenic stops!

1. St Ignace and Mackinac Bridge area

St Ignace is the city you’ll pass through right after you drive across the Mackinac Bridge.

Straits State Park is located near the Mackinac Bridge.

Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan: Straits State Park campground with mackinac bridge views. Michigan travel blog

See more about things to do in St Ignace .

If you’re limited on time, then you can keep driving north.

But before really starting to drive north, make a slight detour to the west and take US-2 aka Lake Michigan Scenic Highway for a small part so you can drive directly along the lake.

Make a stop (safely!) and get out of the car to walk along the top of small sand dunes and the beach.

Also if you want to make a detour to the next destination, you can go to the Soo Locks , which is a narrow water crossing where massive cargo ships go through. This is considered an engineering feat. (Observation deck closed in summer 2020 due to health safety reasons, but you can still see it from ground level.)

Camping in the UP with Mackinac Bridge views: Straits State Park campground

2. Whitefish Point

Now you can make your way up to what’s been called the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes” or the “Graveyard of Lake Superior.”

It’s said that it gets this name because of the MANY shipwrecks that occurred right around here.

The Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum is located here, and there is a lighthouse here too.

You can also go for a long walk on the beach in search of colorful rocks!

Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan: whitefish point shipwreck beach. Michigan travel blog

See more about Whitefish Point .

After your visit to Whitefish Point, you may also be interested in Crisp Point or Vermilion Point along the shores of Lake Superior!

3. Tahquamenon Falls State Park

Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan: Tahquamenon Falls. Michigan travel blog

You’ll have passed the turn-off for Tahquamenon Falls on your way up to Whitefish Point so you’re coming back down south a little bit.

These waterfalls are the most popular waterfalls in Michigan.

The Upper Falls are the best for viewing, and the Lower Falls are the best if you want to get up close and personal with the waterfalls and wade a bit in the Tahquamenon River that feeds the waterfalls. You can take a boat across the river to a small island!

See more about things to do in Tahquemenon Falls State Park .

Camping in the UP near Tahquamenon Falls: Tahquamenon Falls State Park campground and Andrus Lake State Forest campground .

As you drive to the west from Tahquamenon Falls, you’ll want to stick to the numbered roads (county/state/government roads) so you won’t end up on the real backroads of the UP! (These are backroads that you don’t want to end up on!)

Backroads of the UP Upper Peninsula Michigan on a circle the UP road trip. Michigan travel blog

Even worse, you don’t want to get stuck in sand on Rabbit Patch Road like a bunch of other tourists. For example if you decide to go from Tahquamenon Falls to Muskallonge Lake State Park campground .

When I arrived at Muskallonge Lake, the state park worker there said a ton of people had been rescued from there! aka needed a tow truck to get them out! $$$ This google maps fail is real! Read the comments on youtube.

If you can’t see the Upper Peninsula backroads video above, you can watch it on youtube .

PLUS… A road that you DO want to take… maybe!

If you’ll be driving from Tahquamenon Falls to Pictured Rocks (next on the list!), you may consider a slight detour to drive along the Grand Marais Truck Trail .

This is a gravel road that goes right along Lake Superior in part, and you’ll find a number of access points where you can walk down to the Lake Superior shoreline!

This is a national park site, and 1 of 3 national lakeshores located in the Great Lakes, which are the only national lakeshores in the United States.

So as a national lakeshore, there are tons of spots for scenic sites! This includes overlooks, waterfalls , and beaches .

Best quick stops include the overlooks of the Miners Castle and Log Slide .

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is best known for its cliffs. You can see the Pictured Rocks cliffs by boat and sea kayak.

You can also see the cliffs by foot by hiking the Chapel Loop Trail.

If you’re after hiking trails that come with Lake Superior views, be sure to see the list of best hikes in Pictured Rocks .

Looking for colorful agate stones is a thing on the shores of Lake Superior, and you can do this in Pictured Rocks too.

5. Marquette

The biggest city in the UP.

But don’t expect too much! It’s no “big city” compared to the top American cities. The downtown is a cute little area. This is also a college town, home to Northern Michigan University.

If you want to load up on groceries, this can be a place to do so. There’s a Meijer here. (An indication of how “big” Marquette is. ;))

For nature and incredible Lake Superior views…

6. Keweenaw Peninsula

Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan: Keweenaw Peninsula. Michigan travel blog

This is more of an “off-beat” UP spot, as not as many people get up to the Keweenaw Peninsula compared to other places in the UP.

Copper Harbor is the city that’s located at the far northern tip of the UP (and far northern tip of Michigan). Houghton is the main city in the Keweenaw Peninsula. This is another college town, where Michigan Tech University is located.

For nature and incredible Lake Superior views, don’t miss Hunters Point Park and Devil’s Washtub . The Brockway Mountain overlook is another good spot.

Copper Harbor is also known for mountain biking trails . You can rent bikes there or bring your own.

The area is also “Copper Country” and there are many spots around the Keweenaw Peninsula where you can learn about the former big copper industry of the region, including through visits to places that are a part of the Keweenaw Heritage Trail and Keweenaw National Historical Park .

See more about the Keweenaw Peninsula .

Camping in the Upper Peninsula in/near the Keweenaw Peninsula:

  • Fort Wilkins Historic State Park campground
  • McLain State Park campground
  • Baraga State Park campground

7. Porcupine Mountains State Park

Now this is the far western Upper Peninsula , getting close to Wisconsin.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park is said to be Michigan’s largest state park. You get hills inland, and Lake Superior on the coastline here.

Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan: Porcupine Mountains, hiking escarpment trail. Michigan travel blog

There are basically 2 sides to the state park.

Union Bay is the side with the visitor center and famous Lake of the Clouds overlook . This is also the side where you can access the Escarpment Trail , considered to be among the best hikes in the Porcupine Mountains.

Presque Isle is the side with the waterfalls. There is a riverside waterfall hike you can do to see a series of waterfalls with the Presque Isle River waterfalls loop .

And as the name of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park indicates, the Porcupine Mountains (aka the Porkies) has miles and miles of wilderness. To go along with that, there are hiking trails that can be a part of your backcountry camping experience. There are both campsites and cabins available that you can hike to, some right along Lake Superior!

See more about things to do in the Porcupine Mountains .

Camping in the Upper Peninsula in the Porcupine Mountains:

  • Union Bay campground (lakefront campsites available)
  • Presque Isle campground
  • List of camping spots in the Porcupine Mountains (including backcountry campsites and cabins)

On your way to the next place on the list, you might want to go to Bond Falls !

8. Southern peninsulas of the UP

Now to make it a loop of the UP, you can start driving back east, along the southern part of the Upper Peninsula.

You can visit a peninsula on a peninsula!

There are smaller peninsulas you can stop at that are more off-beat UP spots.

There’s the Garden Peninsula, where you can visit Fayette Historic State Park (camping available) for a bit of history on what life around here was like back in the day. Here you can also see a unique geological formation for the region, with some dolomite cliffs that are a part of the Niagara Escarpment .

Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan: fayette historic state park, snail shell harbor. Michigan travel blog

And there’s also the Stonington Peninsula where you can visit the Peninsula Point Lighthouse.

You can climb up to the top of this lighthouse.

9. Kitch-iti-kipi

And then continuing the drive, near Manistique is one of the most popular spots in all of the UP.

Kitch-iti-kipi is where you can see the bubbling big spring ! You can ride the free observation raft to actually see down below where the water is “bubbling” beneath the sand and entering into the spring.

Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan: Kitch-iti-kipi, the bubbling big spring. Michigan travel blog

See more about Kitch-iti-Kipi .

And then drive back to the Mackinac Bridge to complete your circle of the Upper Peninsula!!!

One more stop on your Michigan road trip

And if you want to make an overnight stop in the Lower Peninsula on your way up north to the UP (or back down south), you might consider Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore !

It might be a slight detour, but you might think it’s worth it!

This is located on the shores of Lake Michigan.

To start your UP road trip

Now going back to the start! Before you make it to the Upper Peninsula…

If you’re driving up from the south in Michigan and looking for a stop just before you cross over to the UP, then make a stop at either Wawatam Park (Lake Huron side) or McGulpin Point (Lake Michigan side, picture below) so you can have views of the Mackinac Bridge from the Lower Peninsula!

And then you will drive across the Mackinac Bridge to the Upper Peninsula!!

The prettiest parts of the Upper Peninsula include Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park , the Keweenaw Peninsula , and the Lake Superior lighthouses !

Lake Superior circle tour

The Lake Superior circle tour is a thing. (So is a Michigan scenic byway.)

Circling Lake Superior means driving around the lake through Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ontario (Canada)!

If you want to do the whole loop, Americans do need a passport to travel to Canada, or an enhanced drivers license if you live in a state where that’s offered… like Michigan!

Part of this drive around the UP will cover the Michigan stops to make on the Lake Superior circle tour!

Lake Superior isn’t the only one of the Great Lakes that you can see on a UP road trip though!

The Upper Peninsula touches 3 of the Great Lakes: Lake Superior , Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron! With the trip route below, you can see all 3 of these lakes!

As you are driving, you may also come across signs for the Lake Michigan circle tour and the Lake Huron circle tour too.

You can also make your Michigan road trip into:

  • Michigan waterfalls road trip
  • Michigan lighthouse road trip
  • Lake Superior road trip
  • Lake Superior camping trip

North Country Trail

Best places to visit in the UP upper peninsula Michigan: backpacking the North Country Trail. Michigan travel blog

There is also something called the North Country Trail which is a national scenic trail .

This is a hiking trail (backpacking trail) that extends for 4,600 miles across many states from the midwest to east coast. Part of it goes through the Upper Peninsula.

Camping in the Upper Peninsula

Best places to visit in the UP. Camping in the UP Upper Peninsula campgrounds. Michigan travel blog

I did this as a 2 week camping trip. So it’s possible to find campgrounds along the way.

For Michigan state park campgrounds, be sure to see this list of state park campgrounds in the UP that will give you amazing views of the Great Lakes! You’ll want to make reservations, and this is the state park camping reservation website .

For national park campgrounds , you will also want to make reservations, and this is the national park camping reservation website .

You can also find Michigan state forest campgrounds and Hiawatha National Forest campgrounds along the way too.

Prepare for minimal cell and data service

Even if you won’t be camping, you want to prepare as if you won’t have cell service (data service) as you drive from one destination to another within the UP.

Since this is remote Michigan, there’s a good chance you will hardly get any data service while on the road. (You may get a little service as you’re passing through small towns.)

Most importantly, this means that it would be a very good idea to download offline google maps before you go. This is free.

GPS mostly works around the UP, so as long as you have offline maps, then you’ll be able to navigate even if you aren’t able to get data.

Quick list: Best things to do in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

  • Eastern Upper Peninsula
  • Whitefish Point (shipwreck coast)
  • Tahquamenon Falls State Park
  • Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
  • Western Upper Peninsula
  • Keweenaw Peninsula

Top Attractions in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

The Upper Peninsula draws travelers who love adventure, history and nature.

Midwest Living's experienced editors create best-in-class travel, lifestyle, food, home and garden content you won't find anywhere else. We're loudly, proudly Midwestern, and we're passionate about helping our audience explore and create through award-winning storytelling.

Jason Lindsey

Bounded on three sides by Great Lakes, Michigan's Upper Peninsula (UP) is a natural for water-related activities. However, forests, cliffs and mountains beckon, too.

Laze away warm summer days on lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan. Along the water you'll find grassy spots, sandy dunes and rocky outcroppings. Inland there are waterfalls and glacial lakes. If you crave more activity, find shipwrecks, explore lighthouses, hit some golf balls. Hikers venture through old-growth forests, over peaks and along rivers tumbling to the Great Lakes.

Winter has its own beauty—and activities such as snowmobiling, ice fishing and skiing— with three digits worth of snowfall. Spring is bright with wildflowers. Fall stuns with foliage. No matter when or where you go, striking scenery awaits.

But the UP isn't only about the great outdoors. Marquette and the UP's smaller towns, such as Sault Ste. Marie, Houghton and Hancock charm with attractions. Here are some of our favorite things to do in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Climb a Lighthouse

Standing guard over treacherous waters, 40 lighthouses dot the UP, including 12 open to the public. Among our favorites:

Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and Museum Period furnishings decorate this 1871 redbrick Keweenaw Peninsula light . Also explore maritime, Keweenaw history and commercial fishing museums on the grounds.

Peninsula Point Built of Cream City brick, the square tower attracts butterfly-watchers in the fall. Peninsula Point is located in Hiawatha National Forest at the southern tip of the Stonington Peninsula between Bays de Noc.

Point Iroquois Lighthouse Resting on a bluff overlooking the lake and Whitefish Bay, this lighthouse is also part of Hiawatha National Forest. Visitors can climb the 72 steps to the lantern deck or take a wooden walkway to the beach.

Dig into History

Much of the history of the area revolves around mining. Learn about the boom and decline at these sites and others.

Keweenaw National Historical Park Sites related to the Upper Peninsula copper mining boom days, like the Quincy Mine in Hancock, scatter across the Keweenaw Peninsula as part of this historical park.

Fayette Historic State Park On the south shore of the Upper Peninsula, explore eerie remains of an iron-smelting town . Camping and recreation also available, near Fayette.

Fort Wilkins Historic State Park Costumed interpreters re-create life at this restored 1844 military outpost and one of the first lighthouses on Lake Superior near Copper Harbor. Camping and day-use facilities available.

Explore Shipping

Shipping is a major industry on the Great Lakes. Watch the freighters inch their way through locks, or learn about those that never made it to dock.

Soo Locks Park and Visitors Center Boats lock through and cruise the busy international harbor in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan's oldest city. Viewing platforms at the Soo Locks Visitors Center provide vantage points for watching ships navigate the 21-foot drop between Superior and Huron lakes.

Museum Ship Valley Camp In Sault Ste. Marie, this museum is more than a tour of a ship deck. The cargo holds include 100-plus exhibits and aquariums.

Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum The Whitefish Point Light station houses accounts of shipwrecks, artifacts (the bell from the Edmund Fitzgerald ), restored keeper's quarters and more.

Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse The museum space at Marquette Maritime Museum and Lighthouse is small, but the lighthouse tour is a great way to get a glimpse of what a keeper's life was like.

Portage Lake Lift Bridge The widest and heaviest double-decker vertical lift bridge in the world raises its deck for traffic on the Portage Canal in Houghton.

Take a Hike

Aaron Peterson

Get up close to the wonders of this region while hiking some of the many trails.

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park Michigan's largest state park has 90 miles of trails leading to waterfalls, rustic campsites and mountain views. Near White Pine, the park's paths lead along Presque Isle River, up to Summit Peak and an overlook of Lake of the Clouds, and past evidence of copper mines.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park The region's largest waterfall stars at this park 73 miles west of Sault Ste. Marie . A variety of loop trails wind past both the Upper Falls and Lower Falls, as well as other wilderness features in the park. Stop at Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and Pub near the park entrance before or after your visit.

Escape to an Island

Camping, hiking, biking, fishing and relaxing are plentiful on these northern islands. Ferries shuttle visitors from nearby cities.

Isle Royale National Park Unspoiled forests, wilderness lakes and rugged shoreline are the attractions at this remote group of islands , the least-visited of the national parks. Ferries from Houghton and Copper Harbor carry nature lovers to the 45-mile-long wilderness anchoring 454 islands. Stay at Rock Harbor Lodge near the dock, or make arrangements for camping.

Les Cheneaux Islands Towering forests and sheltered bays and channels dot these 36 islands. Families return each summer to simple cabin resorts in Hessel and Cedarville along Lake Huron.

Enjoy Shoreline Beauty

Miles of shoreline along Lake Superior as well as lakes and wetlands mean access to a wealth of beauty.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore The area encompasses sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lakes and forest, not to mention 40 miles of Lake Superior shoreline. Before exploring, get a map at the visitors center at the park's western gateway in Munsing.

Northern Waters Adventures This outfitter (based in Munising) leads kayak trips along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore or Grand Island Recreational Area. Paddle through sea caves, under arches, over shipwrecks or past a lighthouse.

Seney National Wildlife Refuge The 150-square-mile mosaic of wetlands, bogs and forest draws 200 bird species. Explore by car, canoe, foot or bike.

Sylvania Wilderness Area Some 34 crystalline lakes hide behind a forest of century-old trees at the Sylvania Wilderness Area southwest of Watersmeet. Previously a private estate and now a federal wilderness area in the Ottawa National Forest, Sylvania has barely changed in more than 100 years. Fifteen miles of hiking trails and portages link the lakes.

Tour by Boat

See the sights in comfort by taking a boat tour.

Sault Ste. Marie Tours Choose from multiple tours —through the locks, past lighthouses, buffets, fireworks and more.

Munising Tours Pictured Rocks Cruises glide past cliffs and waterfalls. Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours show shipwrecks through glass viewing wells.

Explore the Towns

Small towns capture the charm and distill the history of the Upper Peninsula.

Marquette With a population of about 20,000, it's the largest town on the Upper Peninsula. Come for top-rated Presque Isle Beach, gawk at the huge Lower Harbor Ore Dock, and stay for an afternoon of eating and browsing along Washington Street. Read more about a getaway to Marquette.

Houghton and Hancock An enormous lift bridge and the towering Quincy Mine Hoist dominate the skylines of Houghton and Hancock on the Keweenaw Peninsula. The A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum on the campus of Michigan Tech is a visitor favorite.

Calumet and Copper Harbor On your way up the Keweenaw Peninsula, stop at the Calumet Theatre , one of a dozen 19th-century buildings in the historic copper mining town of Calmuet. In Copper Harbor, at the top of the peninsula, take the scenic Brockway Mountain Drive , which looks down on tour boats traveling to the 1866 Copper Harbor Lighthouse.

Sault Ste. Marie In this historic riverfront town, boat tours and maritime attractions fill a weekend. Find beaches, shipwreck lore and roaring waterfalls. Sault Historic Sites features a museum ship, Tower of History and River of History.

Plan a Romantic Getaway

If your idea of a romantic weekend is getting away from it all (but still being close to great restaurants and attractions), the UP delivers. The Vault hotel in Houghton takes inspiration from its former life as a bank; each floor personifies a different type of wealth—plus there's a speakeasy open only to hotel guests. The Big Bay Point Lighthouse, built in 1896, is one of the few operational lighthouses with a bed and breakfast. At the Landmark Inn in Marquette, book a lakeview king for sweeping views of Lake Superior and an in-room fireplace.

Try a Winter Adventure

Abundant snowfall makes the UP a winter paradise . Experiences await like dog-sledding at Nature's Kennel Sled Dog Racing and Adventures in McMillan, about 90 miles east of Marquette, and thousands of miles for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing all across the peninsula. State parks such as Tahquamenon Falls are a good place to start for winter trail adventure.

The ULTIMATE Summer Upper Peninsula Road Trip Guide

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is like no other place on earth. Sandwiched between three of the greatest lakes in the world, it’s filled with peaceful forests, magnificent waterfalls , ancient rock formations, quiet and cozy towns, and miles and miles of shoreline — making it the perfect setting for a one-of-a-kind road trip.

Before you get started though, there’s one thing to warn you about: the UP is big. Like, really big. Like, a road trip across the whole thing to hit every sight you absolutely need to see could eat up a serious chunk of your vacation days.

So we suggest taking this guide and picking a segment or two to take at a time, then stitching them together throughout the summer. Trust us — you won’t want to miss any of these incredible destinations, or the beautiful journeys between them, during your summer Upper Peninsula road trip !

St. Ignace to Sault Ste. Marie

Soo Locks In Sault Ste. Marie - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

After making your own way north through the lower mitten, your journey starts by crossing the Mackinac Bridge into  St. Ignace . Right off the bridge is a classic road trip tourist stop — Castle Rock, a large rock formation where you can get your exercise in for the day by climbing to the top for a great view of the straights.

This is also where you’ll find Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox statues and an old-school gift shop perfect for adults and kids alike.

If you’re still feeling touristy, take a stop at the Mystery Spot where you can — well, you’ll have to stop to find out for yourself! A quick hour up I-75 will take you to Sault Ste. Marie , one of the oldest settlements in the midwest.

Home to Lake Superior State University , there are plenty of restaurants and shops to quell your hunger (for food and gifts) before the catching a Soo Locks Boat Tour .

Though there are plenty of cruises to choose from, the main attraction is the operation of the Soo Locks, where you actually go through the world’s largest locking system and cruise alongside giant lake and ocean ships.

Sault Ste Marie to Paradise and Whitefish Point

Whitefish Point - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Leaving “The Soo,” you’ll take Lakeshore Drive for a scenic trip to Paradise (adorable, we know) where you can get some memorabilia and classic midwest fare. Then it’s just a short drive into Tahquamenon Falls State Park , the most iconic waterfalls in Michigan.

There are two sets of waterfalls, so make sure you plan enough time for both the upper and lower region of the river. If you only want to stop quickly for a few pictures, the upper falls are very accessible and can let you get on your way.

But if you want to stay longer, the park has a campground and gorgeous hiking trails that can easily extend your stay to a day or two.

Once you decide to hit the road, Whitefish Point is just half an hour north. The point features one of the oldest operating lighthouses on Lake Superior, surrounded by beautiful, wide-open vistas of the water.

If you’re into Michigan or maritime history at all, the facility also features the coolest shipwreck museum around. The admission fee for the museum isn’t too bad, especially if you bundle as a family, and for just a bit extra you can climb to the top of the lighthouse tower for some truly incredible views.

Whitefish Point to Grand Marais

View Of The Grand Marais Bay And Lighthouse - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

A two-hour drive is all it takes to get from Whitefish Point to the cutest, friendliest town you’ll find in all of Michigan — maybe the world. Grand Marais, the eastern gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore , is home to only 500 people year-round, but it is the perfect stopping point (or week-long destination — there’s plenty of lodging and campsites!) for your road trip.

Eccentric restaurants like West Bay Diner and the Dune Saloon keep you fed, while kitschy stops like the Pickle Barrel (where the teeny-weenies live) and the  Gitche Gumee Agate and History Museum and store provide plenty of entertainment.

When it’s time to venture out, take in the pristine bay beach, soak up the sun, and test your meddle by swimming in Lake Superior — it really is cold though. If you want something more rocky and adventurous, you can head out to Agate Beach and watch the waves roll in.

Grand Marais to Munising

Chapel Rock In Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

The next stretch of road is its own part of the journey, and you’ll take H-58 from Grand Marais to Munising for the 198 twists and turns along Lake Superior. On this route, you can top by the breathtaking Sable Falls , Lake, Dunes, and other Pictured Rocks waterfalls .

If you’re really in a hurry, or really don’t want to enjoy the scenery, you can instead chose to take M-28 for the Seney Stretch — rumored to be the most boring road in Michigan. Either route will drop you off in Munising, and it’s certainly not hard to decide what to do there, as it’s home to the Pictured Rocks and all of the great ways to experience the landscape.

If you’re wondering if Pictured Rocks are all that they’re cracked up to be, they are. You have to get away from land, or at least on the very edge, to see the formations, and you can choose from a boat tour, kayaking out with a guide , or hiking to Chapel Rock to view it from land. Stop by Chapel Falls, just east of the Chapel Rock hike, for another incredible waterfall display.

Munising  is full of lodging and dining options, though we suggest at least one stop at  Muldoon’s for a pasty , in case you haven’t had one yet. But if you want to get your show on the road, M-28 takes you right along Lake Superior for a little less than an hour and drops you off at the hippest town in the UP.

Munising to Marquette

Superior Dome Nmu - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Marquette is just the coolest. Home to Northern Michigan University and the Superior Dome, the largest wooden dome in the world, it’s the perfect combination of up-north charm and college town.

Though this is definitely the place to take your time and eat at one (or many) or Marquette’s fabulous restaurants , make sure to also swing by  Lagniappes for live zydeco music, heaps of atmosphere, and authentic New Orleans cajun grub.

There are some very cool bars around downtown as well, including Blackrocks Brewery , literally a bar in a house with incredible an amount of charm.

For your outdoor activities, the hiking is outstanding at  Presque Isle Park and Sugarloaf Mountain . The tourist state park is exactly what it sounds like, great for a relaxed drive or walk through the forest with the lake in the background.

Marquette to Houghton

Portage Lake Lift Bridge In Houghton - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

From one college town to another, travel up to the Keweenaw to Houghton , home of  Michigan Technological University .

Between these two cities is Michigan’s highest point of elevation at Mount Arvon . The detour can add about two hours, plus however long it takes you to hike up the 1,300 feet above Lake Superior.

It is definitely a must for avid hikers and climbers, but if that’s not your thing, you can keep the road trip moving along to your next destination.

Houghton has a large number of neat museums and shops for you to explore, such as the Mineral Museum , which displays and sells rocks, stones, and gems from around the world.

If you stay the night in Houghton, breakfast at  Suomi Cafe on your way out is perfect for inexpensive and delicious classic American breakfast food.

Houghton to Copper Harbor

Lighthouse In Copper Harbor - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

An hour farther up the Keweenaw Peninsula gets you to the historic Copper Harbor , a town that used to be the heart of the huge copper industry in the UP. Nowadays, Copper Harbor is bursting with outdoor adventures for dedicated Michiganders to get out and do (though you can still spot green and metallic copper in the water).

If you’re looking for a hike,  Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary  offers a mix of easy, boardwalk trails with steep rocky pathways.

You can of course kayak in the waters around the town to glimpse some of the leftover copper of the past, or hit up Fort Wilkins State Park to glimpse the people of Copper Harbor’s history and walk among the buildings of the preserved fort to see what it was like to live at a frontier fort in the 19th century.

Before the sun sets, the 9-mile ride through Brockway Mountain Drive will give you what might be the best view in all the UP , so have your cameras and your “oohs and ahs” ready.

We recommend staying the night at a hotel or campground in Copper Harbor, because the next leg of your road trip is fairly long and will leave you in the heart of the UP wilderness.

Copper Harbor to Ontonagon (Porcupine Mountains)

Lake Of The Clouds In The Porcupine Mountains - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Driving back down Keweenaw, you’ll want to stock up on gas and snacks in  Ontonagon before heading into the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park . I’m sure many of you have been waiting for this stop on your road trip because the Porkies are home to some of Michigan’s most iconic topographical features.

You can’t say you’ve truly seen what the UP has to offer until you’ve seen  Lake of the Clouds in the Porkies. Drive right up to the viewing area, or hike around to see this recognizable sight, as it really is breathtaking.

There’s also plenty to explore around the rest of the park, such as  Bond Falls ,  Presque Isle River , and the many hiking trails looping throughout the park’s gorgeous backcountry.

Ontonagon to Manistique

Kitch-Iti-Kipi - Upper Peninsula Road Trip - The Awesome Mitten

Strap in for your longest leg of the road trip, as heading back east from the Porkies to Manistique  takes about three and half hours.

Not only will you want stop in Manistique to stretch your legs and refuel, but it’s also home to  Kitch-iti-Kipi  (or “The Big Spring”) and we’re guessing you’ve seen this one on Facebook.

You’ll get to see the marvels of this genuinely stunning active spring from a raft that floats you out right over the crystal clear blue water. There’s a park store and gift shop, so you can brag to your Facebook friends about seeing to this remarkable oddity in our home state.

This cute town also offers the perfect setting for boardwalk trekking and dining, or you can venture over to  Mackinaw Trail Winery for some tasting and relaxing after all your outdoor exercising.

Manistique to St. Ignace

The last leg of your journey winds along US-2, on the edge of Lake Michigan’s northern shore. It’s another one of the prettiest drives you can get in Michigan, with the lake on one side and beautiful UP forest on the other.

A quick stop at Cut River Bridge  provides an incredible look at a 150-foot gorge dug out by the Cut River leading out to Lake Michigan. It makes for only a 10 to 15-minute stop, but it is great for some pictures and the opportunity to stretch your legs.

Other eccentric little towns on your way back to St. Ignace, like Brevort or the  Garlyn Zoo  in Naubinway, provide even more chances to sightsee while refilling the snack cooler and gas tank.

Coming up on St. Ignace along US-2 will give you a view of the Bridge, signaling the end of your UP road trip adventure. Hopefully, by this time you’ll look back fondly on the UP’s striking features, its rich history, and its friendly faces.

The Ultimate Upper Peninsula Road Trip Guide Story

I'm a Spartan, a tree climber, an ice cream connoisseur and a passionate Michigander who wants to tell the stories of our state and those in it. I will correct you if you say soda instead of pop.

Can’t leave out Bessemer-Ironwood. Copper Peak. Black River Falls. At a minimum.

You missed the Jampot on the Keewaunaw!! Yummy jams and baked items all made onsite along with homemade candy! Also the ski jump built in the early 70’s to train the Olympic team, Copper Peak. Ride the ski lift to the base of the jump, elevator to approx mid point, then climb stairs to the top!!!! The view is spectacular!

We love The Jampot! In fact, it has its very own article: https://www.awesomemitten.com/thejampot/

How about the Quincy mine in Hancock! They have great mine tours!

Thank you so much! We plan to visit the U. P. This summer…all the way from south Mississippi. I have taken notes from your article and hope to see it all!

It’s always remarkable to me that every article of this time ignores the western UP from Escanaba to Menominee. Small towns like Rapid River, Nahma, Bark River , Fayette all have very unique offerings. If you’re considering the UK trip, everything mentioned above is beautiful, but the southern shore of the upper peninsula with its Lake Michigan beaches is also spectacular.

Never been to MI but have been wanting to see the UP for many years. Planning at trip for 2024 between mid-August to mid-September. This article was exactly what I wanted and needed. I followed along on a large MI map to the destinations and you hit them all perfectly, making it a smooth, easy trip. Can’t wait to go!

Mackinac Island's old-world charm (think: horse-drawn carriages and Victorian-style buildings) creates the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway or family vacation. The island banned cars in 1898, so tourists – or Fudgies as locals call them – can only access the island by private boat, ferry or plane. Once on Mackinac, visitors can taste some of its world-famous fudge, tour historical sites like Fort Mackinac and explore the island's state park, which covers more than 80% of the island. Keep in mind, though, that many of Mackinac Island's attractions are closed during the winter months despite the island being accessible year-round.

Keep in mind, travelers will need a valid Michigan Recreation Passport to gain admission to the park.

This town on Lake Michigan's northeastern shore is one of the state's best tourist destinations. Perhaps best known as a cold-weather vacation spot, Petoskey is home to three major ski resorts with more than 160 slopes and multiple terrain parks. Visitors can also try other winter activities like ice skating, snowmobiling and sledding. For less-adventurous travelers, there's the historic Gaslight District, which is filled with a variety of shops and restaurants. For a one-of-a-kind experience, search for Petoskey stones at Petoskey State Park – these unique fossils can often be found hiding along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

9 Best Places to Visit in The Upper Peninsula of Michigan

I have to admit, when I first traveled through it, I didn’t expect that there were so many things to do in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and in hindsight, I wish I stayed around this region longer to do just that. But never the less, I did see a lot and in this post, I want to share 9 of the best places to see there.

Here are the 9 best places to visit in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan:

things to do in the upper peninsula michigan new 01

  • Mackinac Island Arch.
  • Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
  • Scott Falls.
  • Presque Isle State Park.
  • Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
  • Presque Isle River Waterfalls Loop Trail.
  • Superior Falls.
  • Eben Ice Caves.
  • Apostle Islands.

I was able to see 6 of the 9 places on this list of the most beautiful places in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and while I did rush through the area, you certainly shouldn’t if you have more time than I did.

1) Mackinac Island’s Arch Rock:

mackinac island arch rock upper peninsula of michigan 01

Mackinac Island is a very small island that you can access by ferry once you enter the Upper Peninsula of Michigan (from the main Michigan state itself). It has a lot of attractions to check out, including trails, caves and so forth, but the main thing in my opinion would be Arch Rock .

In my case, I actually realized I missed this spot because I figured the main attractions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan were in the northern end of it. Reaching this place requires a boat though, so keep this in mind. But hopefully, you won’t make my mistake and miss it!

2) Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore:

pictured rocks national lakeshore upper peninsula of michigan 02

The prettiest part of the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan has to be Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (at least this is I thought) and it was the main attraction I wanted to see during my road trip in that area.

This is a national park area that spans for over 20 miles across the shoreline of Michigan. On it, you will find tons of awesome things to explore, from beach waterfalls, to kayak adventures and much more. See my post above on what to do in this beautiful park but for sure, if you visit the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, this has to be your main go to spot and just as well, it’s also one of the best places to see the Northern Lights in the USA .

3) Scott Falls:

scott falls upper peninsula of michigan 03

I consider Scott Falls to be a small but cool “Easter Egg” in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It can be found on your GPS and is identified as “Lake Superior Historical Marker Scott Falls”.

It is a beautiful waterfall right off road 28 and it’s really easy to miss. In our case, we accidentally saw it while passing by and of course, we had to stop to check it out. A trail is available around the waterfall, but be sure to stop here. And right next to it is a cool little beach you can also explore if you like.

4) Presque Isle State Park:

Presque Isle Park upper peninsula of michigan 07

Presque Isle State Park is a very small, but extremely scenic park I highly recommend checking out. They have beaches, cliff jumps, cliffs and beautiful areas to check out the sunsets, which is when we arrived there. We didn’t have much time, but we did get to see a number of things at this park before heading off to the town nearby to grab supper.

An interesting coincidence to note is that the picture you see above (of me by the beach) is at this park and it’s also an area I remembered seeing on Google well over a decade ago (possibly 2) and I never knew what this area was. What an exciting feeling it was when I realized this same beach was what I had “wished” I saw all those years ago and it finally came true there and then!

5) Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (Lake of The Clouds Overlook):

porcupine mountains wilderness state park upper peninsula of michigan 03

After the first day of my road trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, my buddy and I stayed at a hotel in the Porcupine Mountains and in the morning explored and drove around the whole area, stopping by and checking out certain spots. The first place we saw was a beautiful overlook called Lake of The Clouds. It’s easy to reach and quite a sight.

6) Presque Isle River Waterfalls Loop Trail:

Presque Isle River Waterfalls Loop Trail upper peninsula of michigan 06

After checking out Lake of The Clouds overlook, my buddy and I drove through the Porcupine Mountains and on the way saw signs for a waterfall trail area. We checked it out, and there was a beautiful trail to walk which took you down steps, across a beautiful bridge, arch rocks, sea caves and an awesome view of Lake Superior in parts.

7) Superior Falls (Legion County State Park):

superior falls upper peninsula of michigan 05

The last spot my buddy and I saw on our road trip through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan was this small, but also scenic park. There are 2 things worth noting here that make it worth visiting:

There are giant red cliffs here (east of the waterfall) and a cool trail that takes you behind an electric station and to a beautiful waterfall with giant gorges around it. The second trail is what takes you to Superior Falls and there are some interactive things to do there like hiking, climbing and if the water level is low enough, going over to the other side of the waterfall.

8) Eben Ice Caves:

eben ice caves upper peninsula of michigan 04

There are certain parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan which are best to check out in the winter time (or at least before spring begins) and one of those places happens to be the Eben Ice Caves. It is a gorge/cave area where every year (during winter), the ice formations over it cover it up almost entirely and basically cover that cave from the outside. There is a trailhead known as the Eben Ice Caves trailhead which will take you to this place. It’s only about half a mile to it, but it will likely be in snow covered areas. Once you get there, the scenery is beautiful and I have also seen this area photographed at night with lights pointing towards it (or from the inside), making for amazing colors and views to check out.

9) Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (Wisconsin):

apostle islands near upper peninsula of michigan 04

The last spot on this is officially not located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. But it’s very close to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan’s border (about 15 miles away from it) and while it’s not an official spot in this region, I honestly don’t care because it’s stunning and missing it would be a huge mistake in my opinion!

For specifics, the 4 main reasons I decided to add Apostle Islands to the list is as follows:

  • This place is absolutely amazing and matches and even beats Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in some cases.
  • It’s way less crowded than Pictured Rocks.
  • It’s basically a series of many islands with sea caves, like Pictured Rocks, but there’s actually more.
  • And finally, when most people travel to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it’ll be close enough to also stop at the Apostle Islands and I highly recommend you do because it may be an even better place to visit than anything that you see in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

The best Upper Peninsula attractions to see if you’re tight on time:

most beautiful places in the upper peninsula michigan new 07

If you happen to be traveling through this area and tight on time like I was, I would prioritize the following attractions (in hindsight):

  • Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (the top spot in the Upper Peninsula in my opinion).
  • Apostle Islands (it’s the best place to see near the Upper Peninsula).
  • The rest that is on this list should be secondary to the above 2 spots.

Questions about exploring the Upper Peninsula of Michigan:

What is the prettiest part of the upper peninsula.

In my opinion Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is where you will find the prettiest and most amazing area of the Upper Peninsula.

  • North Shore MN
  • Amnicon Falls State Park
  • Best places to visit on the Oregon Coast

With the exception of the Oregon Coast which has it’s own list of amazing scenery, the other 2 recommendations are close to the Upper Peninsula area and can also be explored on a multi day road trip.

I love finding and hearing about hidden getaways when it comes to the outdoors. Especially when it comes to hiking in the woods! I never would have given northern Michigan much thought when it came to the number of sight seeing spots to see.

Could you possibly do any backcountry skiing in this area in the winter?

100% Brad (on the backcountry skiing question). The Upper Peninsula of Michigan gets very cold, snow and icy during the winter seasons and you can even walk across a bit of Lake Superior at times. So yes, such a sport would be very suitable for this region.

What a beautiful area!  I would love to visit, especially Presque Isle State Park (because I love the picture you posted!). I did a quick Google check and discovered that this area is an easy 2-day road trip from my home state of New Hampshire, which also has some awesome wilderness if you wanted to check it out!  Thank you for posting this great information!

Yeah I’m very familiar with New Hampshire and have visited the White Mountains, among other areas there. It’s a stunning state honestly and in regards to the Upper Peninsula, yeah it’ll probably take you about 2 days to get there.

I started in NYC when I went here, and it also took me 2 days to reach, but I was taking my time and visiting areas along the way and that brings up another good point:

See places between New Hampshire and here too. Here are some of my recommendations:

Smugglers Notch in Vermont (very close to you).

Ausable Chasm in New York.

Finger Lakes (also in New York).

Cuyahoga Valley National Park (Ohio).

This is a great article and honestly eye-opening for me as I didn’t realize Michigan extended to that part of the country much less the beauty it holds! I have heard of Superior falls only because I have very distant family who lived around Lake Superior and they offhandedly mentioned the falls but I didn’t realize just how breathtaking they and the rest are you mentioned in your article. Next time I am in those neck of the woods I will definitely need to go check it all out!

Considering how much I rushed through this region, I’m very lucky to have discovered these spots Daniel, and I’m sure there’s plenty more in each part of the Upper Peninsula to explore. If I weren’t in such a hurry to get to the Minnesota North Shore , I would absolutely spend extra time in this area. Hopefully you’ll get to do that soon 🙂

A Perfect Northern Michigan Road Trip

Join me on an unforgettable Northern Michigan road trip that will convert you into a die-hard Michigan fan. Our journey will take us to the Cherry Capital of the World , a secluded haven steeped in American history, charming Mushroom houses, thrilling ghost encounters, and breathtaking vistas.

I’m excited to share my adventures with you, providing a detailed itinerary you can follow in my footsteps and discover the wonders of this enchanting region for yourself. Get ready to be captivated by Northern Michigan’s beauty and charm!

perfect-north-michigan-road-trip

Day 1: Arrive in Northern Michigan and See Mackinac Island

Are you ready for an adventure in Northern Michigan? Let’s start by flying into Traverse City’s Cherry Capital Airport, the closest and most affordable airport option. From there, hop in your car and drive 2 1/2 hours to Mackinaw City. Don’t worry about parking; head over to Shepler’s Ferry where you can bring your luggage with you for the ride.

If you haven’t experienced ferrying across with your car and luggage, it’s a breeze. The friendly ferry attendants will direct you to the right spot to park your car and tag your bags if you’re heading to a hotel on Mackinac Island. They’ll take care of delivering your bags to your indicated hotel while you buy your ferry ticket and wait for your boarding time.

Sit back and enjoy the spectacular scenery during the twenty-minute ride. Then, it’s time to do some retail therapy by browsing the charming boutiques along Mackinac Island’s front street, sample world-renowned fudge from Ryba , and capture beautiful photos.

Mackinac is the fudge capital of the world!

The only modes of transportation on the island are walking, biking, or taking a horse-drawn carriage. It’s a different way of life here, and one you have to experience to understand.

Don’t miss visiting the iconic Doud’s Market, a family-owned grocery store that has been a staple since 1884.

douds-market-mackinac-island

While you’re on Mackinac Island, treat yourself to a private island tour provided by Jack’s Livery Stable , where you can learn about the island’s fascinating history and hear local stories. By the way, both Mackinaw City and Mackinac Island are pronounced as Mac-kin-aw.

Where to Stay on Mackinac Island

Discover two exceptional places to stay on Mackinac Island, perfect for a luxurious getaway. The famous Grand Hotel has hosted five US Presidents, been featured in movies, and boasts a picturesque porch — the longest in the nation. It reminds me a lot of the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia, but not as many amenities.

the-grand-hotel-outside-view

For an equally stunning experience, stay at Mission Point Resort . This elegant property offers breathtaking waterfront views, elegant restaurants, and a rich history.

I stayed at Mission Point Resort, so I know a lot more about it. The rooms were spacious and luxurious, and the entire resort was laid out in a nice fashion. Views of the waterfront from my room were exceptional. I especially loved the spa and restaurants.

mission-point-resort-hotel

Have a memorable dining experience at Mission Point Resort’s Chianti restaurant. Delight in the antipasti, Fettuccine a la Carbonara, and baby gem lettuce salad, all of which receive a 10/10 for food quality, taste, and service.

If you’re still not ready to conclude your evening in North Michigan, head to the Pink Pony for cocktails and music. It’s a local favorite and the perfect way to end a day in paradise.

Day 2: Sightseeing Mackinac Island and Heading to Petoskey

Don’t miss out on an unforgettable visit to historic Fort Mackinac during your travels in Mackinac! This military outpost served as barracks for soldiers for many years and is the oldest building in Michigan. Costumed interpreters will transport you back to life at Fort Mackinac circa 1780, which was the first National Park in the National Park System and is now a state park.

fort-mackinac-historic-homes

Fort Mackinac’s charming cottages, bungalows, and New England style town make for the perfect photo backdrop to remember your trip here.

fort-mackinac-reenactment

I highly recommend enjoying lunch at the delightful Fort Mackinac Tea Room , located on the Terrace of Fort Mackinac. Although it is managed and owned by The Grand Hotel, the amazing views and delicious food make it well worth a visit.

When it’s time to leave, catch the 1 PM ferry off the island, which gives you plenty of time to see all the incredible artwork, galleries, outdoor paintings, and sculptures that Mackinac has to offer.

Don’t forget to take in the breathtaking blooms from Mackinac’s incredible flower scene!

Exploring Adorable Petoskey

The Terrace Inn is a 100+ year-old hotel boasting 38 cozy cottage rooms with private baths and a delicious complimentary breakfast. Plus, its bay views, interesting nooks, and crannies, and lovely onsite restaurant make it the perfect place for your next getaway.

The drive to get there will take you about 45 minutes.

terrace-inn-hotel-petoskey

FYI : The Terrace Inn has a ghost, which touched my foot as I laid across the bed. If that sort of thing freaks you out, this may not be the property for you.

In Petosky, you’ll find an array of local shops, the Crooked Tree Arts Center, and plenty of tastings to tickle your fancy. Sip a beer flight at Beards Brewery, enjoy a cup of coffee at North Perk Coffee, or indulge in a tasting at Gypsy Vodka.

If wine is more your thing, check out Petoskey Farms Vineyards. Or, like me, try something unique with a handcrafted soda flight at Roast & Toast .

park-in-petoskey

While in Petoskey, be sure to stop by the many charming shops to pick up souvenirs and gourmet foods. Grandpa Shorter’s Gifts , North Goods, and Threads are all great options. And don’t forget to look out for native Petoskey stones!

These flat, smooth stones with circle-like designs (easier to spot when wet) can be found at Magnus Park, Bayfront Park, and Petoskey State Park . Brave the chilly waters for a chance to find your own, or purchase one as a reminder of your trip.

Fun Fact: Ernest Hemingway loved this area and featured it and North Michigan in many of his books.

Dinner and Evening Activity in Petoskey

Discover the best dinner spot in Petoskey! Indulge in oak-planked whitefish, a local Northern Michigan favorite, at Stafford’s Pier Restaurant . It’s a light and beautifully presented dish that will satisfy your taste buds. And don’t forget to leave room for their irresistible Cherry Praline Profiteroles for dessert.

After dinner, explore the wealth and luxury of Petoskey’s waterfront homes with a pontoon boat tour from Pointer Boat . It’s a unique and fun way to see the breathtaking sights. And before you end your night, enjoy a soothing nightcap at the Terrace Inn.

Depending on the time of year, remember to bundle up, as Petoskey is in the snow belt and gets tons of snow!

Day 3: Arriving in Charlevoix and Scenic Driving

Looking for a fun adventure on your Northern Michigan road trip? On day three, kick off your day with a delicious buffet-style breakfast (the potato casserole is the bomb!) at the Terrace Inn before heading out to explore the darling towns of Charlevoix and Traverse City.

Charlevoix (char-la-voy) is a charming seaside French-sounding town just 30 minutes away from Petoskey. Take a break along the way at the Horton Bay General Store for antiques, a tavern, and a tempting restaurant.

Across the street, the Red Fox Inn bookstore offers souvenirs, clothing, and other unique items.

horton-bay-general-store-counter-service

The real highlight of Charlevoix, for me anyway, is the Earl Young Mushroom House Tour . Book a tour at Elements Gallery and hop into a GEM car to explore the whimsical mushroom houses designed by local artist Earl Young.

mushroom-house-charlevoix

These quirky gnome-like houses, 26 in total, will catch your eye with their stonemasonry walls featuring wavy eaves and unmistakable chimneys and roofs. Some of these distinctive houses are available to rent, and the hour-long tour is sure to be a favorite memory of your trip. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind experience!

Charlevoix: A Beautiful Small Town

You’ll discover Charlevoix, a picturesque waterfront town situated on not one, not two, but four stunning bodies of water – Lake Michigan, Round River, Charlevoix River, and Pine River. This idyllic destination is a paradise for boating, fishing, and water sports enthusiasts.

charlevoix-lighthouse-michigan

Stroll through the town’s charming streets and you’ll encounter cute cafes, souvenir shops, clothing stores, art galleries, and even a killer taffy shop (I sampled way too many flavors!). The hanging flower baskets add a lovely touch to the already captivating scenery.

Deciding how to spend your afternoon in Charlevoix can be a delightful dilemma. You might want to explore more of the downtown area’s shopping and attractions or take a drive to a fantastic waterfront dining spot across town.

At The Cantina: Tacos & Tequila , indulge in incredible Queso Dip and Tacos complemented by a cold margarita.

queso-dip-from-the-cantina

Alternatively, make your way to The Landing for mouth-watering burgers, fish & chips, and PB&J Sweet Potato Fries. This cool spot boasts excellent waterfront seating and fantastic service.

Either way, your time in Charlevoix promises to be unforgettable.

Day 3: Next Up…Traverse City

After exploring the charming town of Charlevoix, head south to Traverse City, famously known as the Cherry Capital of the World —a mere hour away. Stay at Hotel Indigo for stylish and comfortable accommodations.

hotel-indigo-traverse-city

Want to experience a taste of Italy? Drive to Mari Vineyards , where you can enjoy a fantastic wine tasting or private tour. Take a picture at the Game-of-Thrones-ish door in the basement and try the Proefectus Red and Scriptorium Riesling.

mari-vineyards-tour

In Traverse City, Clinch Park is the perfect place for shopping, dining, and water activities like kayaking or paddleboarding. Check out the State Theatre Bijou by the Bay to watch classic and indie films in a stunning historical movie theater. Don’t forget the nearly 20 golf courses, six distilleries, and 20 breweries for more fun.

Before dinner, snap some photos at the Mission Point Lighthouse , and then head to PepeNero Ristorante for a toothsome meal of your favorite Italian dish or Mediterranean delight. My friends in the area absolutely love this one and say the meals never disappoint.

I ate at Mission Table on my perfect road trip to North Michigan, but it is now an event space only.

End your adventure back at Hotel Indigo, where you can rest up for your final day on the road trip.

Day 4: A National Park, Leelanau, and Glen Arbor

After grabbing a quick breakfast, make your way to the Leelanau Peninsula, one of Michigan’s best-hidden gems. Start at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Empire, Michigan. With 35-miles of shoreline and towering dunes, it’s an incredible sight to see.

sleeping-bear-dunes-northern-michigan

Be warned, climbing down the dunes to reach the water and back up can be challenging for even the most avid hikers. Some have to be airlifted at a fee from the 450-foot drop. However, if you’re up for the challenge, the view is truly breathtaking.

sleeping-bear-dunes-overlook

Next, head over to Glen Arbor’s Cherry Republic Great Hall mega-store, also known as the Cherry Capital of the World. Here, you’ll find cherry-flavored everything, from salsa to candies to jam and chocolate. Don’t forget to try the cherry wine tasting too.

cherry-republic-northern-michigan

Before you leave, take a browse through the nearby Cottage Book Shop for souvenirs and grab a delicious coffee from Leelanau Coffee Roasting Company . I found an amazing selection of national park posters and day planners at Cottage Books. This is my kinda independent book store!

Fishtown: Unexpected Find on the Northern Michigan Road Trip

Explore Fishtown, a charming commercial fishing village on Lake Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula that’s been preserved for over 150 years. Known for its historic 19th-century shanties, locals saved Fishtown from destruction 11 years ago.

Today, it’s a must-visit destination for shopping, dining, and snapping stunning photos.

adorable-town-of-lelaneau

Don’t miss out on the Village Cheese Shanty and their famous sandwiches. You can place your order at their tiny shop’s menu board and enjoy your meal outside once it’s ready- no need to wait indoors!

Try the Third Coast sandwich with chicken breast, German mustard, and Maytag Bleu cheese on a pretzel bun – it’s simply delicious!

Leland and Lake Leelanau boast numerous fun shops, including Leland Gal , Tug Stuff, Two Fish , The Fish Hook, and Leelanau Books. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are several wineries and distilleries in the area ready to be explored.

Don’t miss out on this quaint and historic gem on Michigan’s coast!

Wonderful piece, and a real trip down memory lane for me! Lived in Michigan for 48 glorious summers and bone-chilling winters (summers are easy; winters, you just survive), and your journey took me to all the places I know so well. You hit the real highlights (Mackinaw Island and Petoskey are a must). It also reminded me I've got a bottle of cherry wine in my wine rack that's probably a decade old, so I'm guessing it's cherry vinegar by now. If you ever get the chance to visit Mackinaw Island in the winter (arrival by the world's shortest flight), jump at it. It's a completely different world, and a true winter wonderland.

The winter wonderland sounds really fun! I heard lots of stories about the extreme temps and those that stay year round. They are troupers. LOL Thanks so much for reading and your sweet comment. I love a good road trip. ;)

The Mitten State, as it’s fondly called, also hosts two wine regions near Traverse City. “Surrounded by the crystal-clear waters of Lake Michigan with spectacular views accompanying every sip, it truly is one of the most scenic wine regions in the country,” says Patrick Brys, an appointed member of the Michigan Travel Commission and president of Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery in Traverse City, which is also home to Sleeping Bear Dunes. “To stand on top of a 450-foot mountain of sand rolling down to the turquoise waters of Lake Michigan is a jaw-dropping moment,” he said.

If you head all the way north on Interstate 75 , you’ll cross the Mackinac Bridge onto the scenic Upper Peninsula in Michigan. The U.P. is a peaceful destination for RV camping between the dense north woods and sandy shoreline along three of the Great Lakes (Superior, Michigan , and Huron). This also makes for a natural playground if you love to go fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, or biking.

Summer is the best time to visit when the weather is nice and warm. It is also especially scenic in the fall when the leaves change colors and in the spring when you can see blooming wildflowers.

We mapped out the best road trip on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Plan your own travels on RV LIFE Trip Wizard and with the RV LIFE App to find more great campgrounds, RV parks, and other points of interest.

1. Straits State Park

Straits State Park makes a great starting point right after you cross the bridge onto the Upper Peninsula. It also provides a perfect home base if you want to take the ferry over to explore the shops and historic sites on Mackinac Island. The park has two campgrounds —the upper sites are larger and nicely shaded in the woods while the lower campground has scenic views of the lake and the bridge.

2. Tahquamenon Falls

About an hour northwest, you’ll reach Tahquamenon Falls State Park near Paradise, Michigan. Tahquamenon Falls is actually two waterfalls, the Upper and Lower Falls, on the Tahquamenon River.

The Upper Falls can be reached along a paved, quarter-mile trail through the woods and down a set of stairs to a viewing platform. From there, it is a longer, 4-mile hike (roundtrip) along the River Trail to reach the Lower Falls. If you want to view the Lower Falls but don’t want to hike, you can also drive up to see it. There is additionally a shuttle service offered for a fee between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The campground is close to the Lower Falls, as well as a gift shop and camp store. There is also a Brew Pub in the park that serves craft beer and various dishes like steaks, sandwiches, and pasta.

3. Pictured Rocks

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a couple hours west of Tahquamenon Falls, along the south shore of Lake Superior. The park’s 100 miles of trails lead to beautiful waterfalls , along the sandy beach, through the woods to inland lakes, and to scenic overlooks where you can see the dramatic cliffs and rock formations.

The park has a few RV-friendly campgrounds including the Twelvemile Campground where you can camp with views of the lake. There is also a KOA and RV park nearby.

4. Keweenaw Peninsula

A few hours west of the lakeshore is the Keweenaw Peninsula, the northernmost point of the Upper Peninsula. This quiet, more remote area has breathtaking views of the Lake Superior shoreline as well as historic sites including the Keweenaw National Historic Park and Quincy Mine .

Vacationer’s Guide

Comparing destinations: which one is right for you.

Family vacations should be fun and memorable.

This article’s destinations are compared to help you decide what fits your idea of pleasure.

The Detroit Club features well-ventilated suites, kid-friendly amenities, and a 5-star experience.

Shinola Hotel, without a doubt, is the most accessible hotel to stay, nearby several noted attractions, restaurants, theaters, and more.

Both may become crowded and have equipment issues, but it doesn’t affect the convenience and relaxation it provides.

Regarding convenience and luxurious pleasure, Aloft Detroit at The David Whitney is a place to stay.

They may experience issues with valet staffing, but rest assured that they address all the problems as quickly as possible.

JW Marriott Grand Rapids is the best alternative if you’re looking for a chic, luxurious, and fun-packed staycation getaway in Michigan.

Despite its slow room service, they offer you the best experience with your tribe.

How I Picked The Destinations

As a traveler, parent, and seasoned writer, I scoured all the essential information about this beautiful place to have a memorable vacation with kids.

I’ve also reviewed some research and chit-chatted with the families visiting Michigan to collect valid and updated reviews.

I also gathered some parents’ points of view and opinions, including some review sites discussing must-visit sights to look forward to.

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Kid-friendly Activities: I use this to evaluate the availability and variety of family-friendly amenities at every property. Does it feature playgrounds and kids’ clubs? Does it organize events explicitly designed for kids? I ask myself these questions whenever I rate this property’s kid-friendly activities.
  • Family Accommodations: This is used to assess the family accommodations of the property. Are the rooms spacious? Does it offer family suites with connecting rooms? Can it accommodate families of different sizes? Is there a crib or baby-proofing in every room? These questions are essential whenever I rate the property’s family accommodations.
  • Dining Options: This evaluates the dining options at the property. Are there kid-friendly options at the property? Is there an on-site restaurant that caters to everyone’s dietary preferences and needs? I use these questions to assess the dining options of every property.
  • Safety and Security: I use this criterion to assess the safety and security of every property. Are the premises secured? Is the staff trained to handle any emergency? I consider these factors when rating the property’s safety and security.
  • Value for Money: This is used to evaluate the value for money of every property. Are the room rates reasonable? Are the services, activities, and amenities suitable for the price? I ask myself these questions to rate the value for money provided by the property.
  • Location and Accessibility: This measures how accessible the property is for families. How far is it from the popular family attractions? Is it easily accessible via public transportation? I use these questions to evaluate the property’s location and accessibility.

Every season in  Michigan  comes with its own side of magic.

Summertime buzzes with travelers when draws like the Great Lakes , charming islands and unspoiled wilderness are at their most accessible, but there are also vibrant spring flowers, eye-popping fall foliage, and a vast array of winter sports – and a chance to see the Northern Lights.

Here’s our seasonal guide to help you choose the best time to visit Michigan.

May to September is the best time for outdoor adventures

Michigan’s high season kicks off on Memorial Day (the last Monday in May), though adventurers will already be outdoors as major draws – like kayaking along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore – are in full swing. Ferries start to depart more regularly to popular spots like Beaver Island and Mackinac Island , while summer-only establishments – in places like Copper Harbor on the Upper Peninsula (the UP) – lift their shutters.

The weather is mostly sunny and warm, with temperatures ranging from 76°F (24°C) to 85°F (29°C). This means lots of summer-only outdoor activities begin: shipwreck tours of Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, cliff jumping from Marquette’s bay, kayaking to Turnip Rock and glamping in a blueberry field on the shores of the UP – not to mention hiking, biking and other sweat-inducing pursuits.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is at its most colorful from May to August and it's also when the lake is most accessible. Trekkers take note: Isle Royale National Park is only open from mid-April through October, but summer (late June to late September) promises the best weather, plus moose-sighting opportunities.

autumn foliage color at Copper Harbor Michigan, overlooking Lake Superior

March to May and October to November are the best times for photographers

Visiting Michigan in the spring (mid-March to mid-June) is a gamble as snow has been known to fall in April and – further north – in May. During the shoulder season, the state is, for the most part, blissfully quiet, with very few crowds, but note that an increasing number of restaurants, tourist attractions and tour operators close when the leaves turn, particularly in the north. There are year-round ferries (weather-permitting) to places like Mackinac Island, though, catering to residents.

Few sights match the beauty of the state’s wild landscapes and national parks . Come fall (late September), photographers should seek out spots like the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness, which is often blanketed in red and copper leaves.

Michigan has another jaw-dropping autumnal attraction too: the state is far enough north for the Northern Lights, aka  Aurora Borealis , to make an occasional appearance. Eagle Harbor on the Keweenaw Peninsula and Headlands International Dark Sky Park , near the Mackinac Bridge, are among the best places to catch a show.

Spring has its own host of captivating nature displays. Visit the city of Holland , Michigan, in late April or early May to see the tulip fields ablaze with rows of brightly colored flowers, or head to Traverse City when its cherry blossoms transition to full bloom. Comerica Park in Detroit , meanwhile, swings into life each April as the city's Major League Baseball team, the Detroit Tigers, return for another season.

Icicles in an ice cave Winter adventure comes in all shapes and sizes in Michigan's Upper Peninsula

December to February is the best time for winter sports

Most of Michigan's warmer-weather draws, like lighthouse tours , Great Lakes kayaking and Traverse City’s tall-ship boat excursions , have closed by December. The days are shorter and colder, keeping many tourists at bay, but those brave enough to face Michigan during its coldest months – when temperatures can drop below 0°F (-18°C) – will witness a side of the Wolverine State few travelers get to see.

A host of ski resorts, such as Crystal Mountain , just outside Traverse City, start to welcome visitors. In Marquette, the Noquemanon Trail Network has 35 miles of groomed, single-track trails that get busy with snowshoers and cross-country skiers. Michigan also hosts the world's largest snowmobile race in  Sault Ste. Marie , in the very far north of the Upper Peninsula. The International 500 Snowmobile Race is the state’s take on the Indianapolis 500.

With frozen waterfalls at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and mushing at Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, just northeast of Muskegon, there's plenty of variety for visitors throughout the winter. Not to mention cozy, come-in-from-the-cold breweries like Bell’s Brewery in Kalamazoo and Founders Brewing Company in Grand Rapids. One thing to note, though, when visiting Michigan in the winter – the further north you go, the fewer restaurants that are open. Bring groceries and other supplies for any northerly winter trips.
