Top 10 Best Tanzania Safari Lodges & Camps

Ariadne is a renowned African wildlife photographer whose work is featured in many well-known guidebooks and magazines.

Tanzania is one of the most highly rated safari destinations in Africa. It is home to several iconic parks, such as Serengeti National Park and Nyerere (formerly Selous Game Reserve) National Park, and the Ngorongoro Crater. These safari hot spots are serviced by a great variety of lodges and camps. Whether you’re looking for an old-school tented camp with maximum bush ambience or a luxurious designer lodge with all the mod cons, there are accommodation options covering all budgets and styles. If you need some tips on where to stay in Tanzania, here are 10 of our favorite Tanzania safari lodges and camps:

1. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is one of the most striking Tanzanian safari lodges. The description in the brochures, ‘where Maasai meets Versailles’, sums it up. The 30-suite lodge features a unique and eclectic mix of Victorian splendor and African materials. And while you will be wowed by the architecture and furnishings, the views will totally blow you away. Set on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater , the lodge is perfectly located to explore one of the most beautiful wildlife havens on earth.

2. Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge

In the shade of an ancient mahogany forest lies Lake Manyara Tree Lodge. It comprises nine sophisticated stilted treehouse suites oozing tranquility and serenity. As the only lodge inside Lake Manyara National Park , it offers a unique wilderness experience just a stone’s throw from the flamingo-filled lake in the heart of the Rift Valley.

3. Sayari Camp

Sayari Camp

The award-winning Sayari Camp, based in Northern Serengeti , is one of the best places to stay to witness the wildebeest crossing the Mara River during the great migration. The camp features 15 tented suites with alfresco bathtubs and private verandas looking out over the savannah plains. Other noteworthy features are the infinity pool, the rejuvenating spa and a solar-powered microbrewery – the first of its kind in the bush.

4. Greystoke Mahale

Greystoke Mahale

Set on a private sandy beach against a backdrop of jungle-clad mountains, Greystoke Mahale evokes a sense of adventure and mystique. The main reason for visiting this remote retreat on the shore of Lake Tanganyika is the thriving population of chimpanzees. Mornings are spent tracking these agile apes, but afternoons are free for boating, swimming or just relaxing in paradise. Six double-story chalets built out of salvaged dhow wood blend into the surroundings. The simple thatched communal dining room and lounge is totally open to the elements, with an upstairs sitting area to enjoy sunset views over the lake.

5. Sand Rivers Selous

Sand Rivers Selous

Sand Rivers Selous is one of the top Tanzania safari lodges. Located deep in the wilderness of Nyerere NP , the lodge offers sweeping views over the mighty Rufiji River. Guests are accommodated in just eight spacious open-fronted cottages. The minimalist architecture ensures a welcome breeze from the river runs through camp. Staying at Sand Rivers is an adventure. Aside from game drives, boat trips on one of Africa’s most scenic rivers, exhilarating walking safaris and fly camping are all on the agenda.

6. The Highlands

The Highlands

Set on the forested slopes of Olmoti Volcano in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area lies the Highlands. Although very remote, the lodge is a great base for exploring the world-famous Ngorongoro Crater, as well as visiting the local Maasai community. The lodge has a striking design inspired by a traditional Maasai homestead . Accommodation is in eight glass-and-canvas domes offering sweeping views over the Serengeti . At the heart of the camp is a well-stocked library, a place where guests assemble around the fire in the evening to share their day’s adventures.

7. Tarangire Treetops

Tarangire Treetops

Another one of the best Tanzania safari camps is Tarangire Treetops. Set in a private game reserve bordering Tarangire National Park , the lodge offers spectacular views of Mt Kilimanjaro, the Rift Valley wall and Lake Manyara . Twenty spacious treehouses with double showers and private balconies are built high off the ground in baobab and marula trees. The main guest area encases a thousand-year-old baobab tree, and a sparkling pool overlooks a watering hole attracting thirsty animals from far and wide.

Tarangire Treetops Tours

8. Lamai Serengeti

Lamai Serengeti

Lamai Serengeti sits right on top of Kogakuria Kopje, a large pileup of giant boulders. From this vantage point you can enjoy uninterrupted views over the Mara River Valley, a prime wildlife area in Northern Serengeti . The lodge is a perfect base to see the seasonal Mara River crossings where thousands of wildebeest and zebras hurl themselves into the crocodile-infested water in search of greener pastures. Twelve family-friendly tents are split between two camps, Main Camp and the more intimate Private Camp, perfect to be booked entirely by a small group of family or friends.

9. Mwagusi Safari Camp

Mwagusi Safari Camp

Mwagusi Safari Camp is an owner-managed lodge that’s been operating since the 1980s. Its homely, unpretentious atmosphere makes it a favorite with repeat visitors to Ruaha National Park . It is located on a secluded spot on the banks of the seasonal Mwagusi Sand River, a natural animal corridor. This is a great choice for a traditional old-school tented camp safari experience with superb wildlife viewing on its doorstep.

10. Mnemba Island

Mnemba Island

Mnemba Island is a romantic hideaway off the Zanzibar coast. The uninhabited island features just 12 rustic beach bandas (thatched houses). After a busy safari, this is the perfect place to relax on your private stretch of beach, and sample fresh seafood prepared with exotic spices for which Zanzibar is known. For a bit of adventure you can snorkel straight off the beach or take a short boat trip to Mnemba Atoll.

Are you embarking on a journey through the heart of Africa’s wilderness? A safari in Tanzania will leave you spellbound with majestic landscapes and abundant wildlife. You need to ensure that where you relax and spend the rest of your time, when not on a safari, is everything you want.  This guide will provide you with the best lodges in Tanzania so you will have an experience like no other.

Why Visit Tanzania?

Tanzania boasts some of the most renowned national parks and wildlife reserves in the world. The allure of Tanzania lies in its vast savannahs teeming with iconic African wildlife, including the legendary Big Five and many others animals and birds. Whether you’re a seasoned safari enthusiast or embarking on your first African adventure, Tanzania promises an unforgettable experience.

Exploring Tanzania’s Main Safari Parks

Arguably Tanzania’s most famous safari destination, the Serengeti National Park is renowned for its annual Great Migration, where millions of wildebeests and zebras traverse the plains in search of greener pastures. This iconic park offers unparalleled opportunities for wildlife viewing year-round.

The breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater , is a natural wonder unto itself. The crater’s unique ecosystem supports a dense concentration of wildlife, making it a must-visit destination for any safari enthusiast.

Known for its large elephant herds and iconic baobab trees, Tarangire National Park offers a quieter, more intimate safari experience. Visitors can enjoy game drives along the Tarangire River, where wildlife congregates during the dry season.

Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Manyara National Park is celebrated for its diverse habitats, from lush forests to expansive grasslands. The park is particularly famous for its tree-climbing lions and abundant birdlife.

As one of the largest game reserves in Africa, Selous Game Reserve offers a remote and wild safari experience in southern Tanzania. Visitors can explore the reserve’s vast wilderness encountering a myriad of wildlife along the way. This was the place I was able to find African Wild Dogs which was the goal of visiting this reserve.

Typical Safari Day

Wondering what a typical day on a safari looks like? Usually your day starts at 6 or 7 am for a morning drive. Once you return back and enjoy a hearty breakfast, the rest of the morning and early afternoon is yours to enjoy at your lodge. Typically you head out on an afternoon game drive around 4 or 5 pm. You will return to your lodge for an enjoyable dinner and enjoy the rest of the evening before you turn in for the night.

Some lodges offer full day excursions when you start, with a hearty breakfast before you head out all day to explore, with a packed lunch. Usually you return to the lodge in the late afternoon to relax and unwind into the evening.

Ensure that your lodge has the activities and amenities that you want as part of your safari experience. Below you will find the best safari lodges in Tanzania, as experienced by myself, or recommended as a top place to stay.

TIP: Book your safari with a tour company to ensure you reap all the benefits of the experience without any stress. I work with a local safari company in Tanzania and I can help you plan your safari trip .

Safari Lodges in Tanzania - Serengeti National Park

Seronera wildlife lodge.

Recommended by Melanie, The World Travel Girl

Located deep in the Serengeti National Park, the Seronera Wildlife Lodge offers a luxurious experience. Artfully constructed around a rocky outcrop, using glass and wood elements, it perfectly blends into its surroundings. The pool and scenery you get while relaxing by the pool is spectacular.

Its proximity to several waterholes attracts a wide array of wildlife, day and night, providing guests with unparalleled opportunities to observe the animals in their natural habitat.

The lodge offers local and international cuisines for the buffet style meals and also has an indoor and outdoor bar to treat yourself at the end of your safari exploring day. It was the only place I stayed at that had a coffee/tea maker in the room.

At night, the sounds of animals around the lodge, make you think they are right outside your door. If you are looking for a luxury safari lodge in Tanzania, then this is one of your best options.

Seronera Wildlife Lodge

Kati-Kati Tented Camp

If you are looking for a true safari experience, then the Kati-Kati Tented Camp is the way to go. This is not one of the luxury lodges in Tanzania, but it was one of the best places I stayed. It’s a glamping experience with comfortable beds in a large tent, amazing meals and right in the middle of the Serengeti.

I loved the unique bucket showers you could take. You pre-arrange when you are going to take a shower. The staff will fill the buckets for you when you are ready. Then you pull a handle to release the water while you shower.

TIP: Shower after the safari, not in the morning, as the water has been sitting in the sun through the day, so the water will be nice and warm.

As soon as it is dark, when you walk to dinner you do so with a flashlight and staff will accompany you back to your tent. Across from the tent is the open savannah, no fences. Once inside you may fall asleep to the sound of lions and hyenas crying in the distance. Truly a unique experience that I highly recommend.

Serena Serengeti Safari Lodge

Recommended by Kim, Explore Your Bucket List

The Serena Serengeti Safari Lodge is a perfect location for visiting the Serengeti. When you arrive you are welcomed by local musicians and dancers which really sets the stage for your authentic experience at this lodge.

The accommodations are spread around the property and are designed with thatched roofs that look like African huts. Inside the rooms are very comfortable and have private balconies. The entire property is full of African art and natural looking furnishings and the grounds are lush with tropical native plants.

There are many amenities provided including a lovely lounge, pool area, laundry services and an expansive food buffet with cooks creating made-to-order dishes.

The property is surrounded by nature and therefore an escort is required for walking from the rooms to the main lodge at night. Animals do come quite close – we even saw zebras on the front lawn on the morning of our departure!

Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge

Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge

Recommended by D&J of Make Them All Trips of a Lifetime

Located deep inside the Serengeti National Park, the Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge absolutely blew us away from the moment we arrived. Ideal for spectacular sunsets and game viewing, each of the 25 luxury tents are built on a platform on the slope of a hill, overlooking the Serengeti.

With ample room and high ceilings, each also boasts large canopy beds, ensuite bathroom and private deck. The most luxurious feature for us was the unique and private outdoor shower.

At the main building, the buffet style meals served at the restaurant were plentiful and delicious, and the large terrace offered daily snacks and sundowners, with a phenomenal view.

On the second level, guests could relax in a large infinity pool, or visit the spa or gift shop. The staff were all attentive and welcoming, and after sunset, we were escorted to and from our tents by friendly Maasai Warriors.

The Serengeti is vast, but the game drives did not disappoint. We encountered many zebras, baboons, elephants, gazelle, lions, cheetah, giraffe and large numbers of wildebeests beginning the great migration.

Kubu Kubu Tented Lodge was more than a luxurious place to relax between game drives, it made us fall in love with the Serengeti.

Unique Travel Experience Tip: opt for a hot air balloon safari that offers breathtaking views over the Serengeti landscape.

Ngorongoro Coffee Lodge

Situated 60 kms from Lake Manyara National Park and with easy access to the Ngorongoro Crater, Ngorongoro Coffee Lodge is a luxurious lodge to base when visiting these areas.

This is a beautifully appointed lodge with very spacious rooms, top-notch furnishings and private balconies. Rooms are a great option for families since most have two beds included. The bathroom has upgraded amenities and provides access to a shower or tub outside. This is a wonderful way to end a long day on safari.

The pool area offers stunning views over a coffee plantation and the grounds in general are lush and host large trees and numerous plants. It is a very serene location for enjoying your downtime.

The main lodge is centrally located and offers comfortable seating for using the onsite wi-fi. There is also a bar and gift shop located in this area. Meals are served buffet style, and the staff is available to bring drinks from the bar. Overall, this is a very well-run location with excellent service.

Hhando Coffee Lodge

Nestled on 15 acres of a coffee-growing region near the Ngorongoro Crater, Hhando Coffee Lodge offers  guests a serene escape amidst the picturesque landscape. Its unique charm lies in its blend of traditional African architecture with modern comforts, providing an authentic yet luxurious experience.

Surrounded by verdant coffee plantations, guests can indulge in freshly brewed coffee while soaking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding forest and listen to the baboons calling in the forest. I loved hearing that!

The property includes a lovely swimming pool, albeit pretty cold,  a few open fireplaces to enjoy and beautiful gardens. Your cottage includes an amazing large bathroom, bedroom and private verandah where you can sit and enjoy hearing the birds found in Tanzania .

Lodges in Tanzania - Lake Manyara / Tarangire National Park

Lake burunge tented lodge.

Staying in a tented camp rather than a traditional lodge can be an exciting part of your safari. Lake Burunge Tented Lodge has an excellent location close to the Tarangire National Park and from the patio, you will have views through the trees of Lake Burunge.

The tented camp offers large spacious rooms with very comfortable beds and indoor bathroom facilities. The tents offer spectacular views through the mesh walls of your surroundings. And they have a lovely porch on the front to watch the sunset from.

The main lodge has a swimming pool and a wonderful deck where drinks can be enjoyed at the end of the day.  From here we also saw elephants grazing in the mornings. The food here was excellent, offering a made-to-order main dish with a combination of buffet side dishes.

Being close to the water there are many animals nearby and staying in the tents allows you to hear the animals at night. We were awoken one night by a pride of lions roaring loudly only 200m from our tent. This was an experience we will never forget!

Lake Burunge Tented Camp

Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge

Sitting on the edge of the escarpment, Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge offers breathtaking views over the National Park and the stunning Lake Manyara in the distance. This area is a haven for bird enthusiasts, as it is home to over 300 migratory birds including flamingoes.

The lodge blends luxury accommodations with eco-friendly design, ensuring a comfortable stay while minimizing environmental impact. Guests can enjoy guided nature walks, bird watching, and cultural tours, enhancing their safari experience. The lodge has a panoramic swimming pool, a spa and fine dining options that ensure relaxation and indulgence after a day of adventure.

Lake Manyara Serena Lodge

Escarpment Lodge

Perched high on the rim of the Great Rift Valley, the Escarpment Luxury Lodge is a safe haven overlooking Lake Manyara. With only 16 private luxury chalets, each is very large, tastefully decorated and boasts phenomenal views. In addition to a large four poster bed, ensuite bathroom and shower, tucked away in the forest, our chalet included a deep claw-foot tub, additional outdoor shower and large private wrap-around deck with a view.

After a long, hot game drive in the nearby Lake Manyara National Park, we thoroughly enjoyed soaking in the tub (with the provided lemongrass bath salts) but be weary of the large olive baboons that live nearby and ensure all the doors are always locked.

The main house provides delicious buffet and a la carte meals (plus yummy cocktails) in the main restaurant or on the outdoor deck, but on our first night, we were surprised with a special anniversary dinner. Tucked away on the deck near the outdoor pool, a romantic table was set up just for us. All the staff were outstanding and went out of their way to make us feel special.

We also opted for the bush boma dinner, which included a private Maasai fireside performance and dinner under the stars, inside a large boma shelter. Everything about the Escarpment Lodge was luxurious and relaxing.

Lodges in Tanzania - Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park)

Southern Tanzania is not as commonly traveled as northern Tanzania, but the Selous Game Reserve is a gem and a different experience, not often experienced by many. I only had the opportunity to stay at one lodge in this area.

Selous Kinga Lodge

Sitting just outside the entrance to the Selous Game Reserve, is Selous Kinga Lodge , a luxurious intimate lodge that provides a connection to nature that is different then exploring the Serengeti.

Visitors can immerse themselves in a range of activities, including game drives to see elephants, lions, and rare African wild dogs, serene boat safaris on the Rufiji River for bird watching and crocodile sightings, and guided nature walks to explore the rich biodiversity of the area.

The whole reason I visited this area was with the chance to find African wild dogs and for bird watching , both which were extremely successful!

Kinga Lodge offers amazing food in an intimate setting, serene pool for relaxing, comfortable sitting area to unwind and reliable WiFi. I highly recommend this lodge if you are visiting Selous Game Reserve.

The Best Safari Lodges in Tanzania

  • Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Tanzania): Built right on the lip of the crater, this is Africa's most over-the-top lodge, a wonderful mix of hobbitlike styling and baronial splendor famously described as "Versailles meets Maasai." As such, it is a destination in its own right, and every vantage quite stunning -- the view of the vast crater below is an added bonus. It's a real exercise in pampering, too: Return from your game drive, and you're likely to find a crackling fire lit in your room (it's cold up on the crater rim) and a rose-strewn bubble bath; settle in and drink in the view, along with a glass of bubbly.
  • Serengeti Under Canvas (Serengeti, Tanzania): There's little to beat the romance of having nothing but canvas between you and the bush (hence "The Best Tented Camps" reviewed below). The semi-permanent tented camps that follow the Migration offer great game viewing with a level of luxury -- carpets, plush sofas, table lamps, and small libraries -- not normally associated with camping. There are four excellent operators, but only &Beyond comes with the luxury of a private butler to see to your every need, from delivering piping hot water, warmed over a fire and carried to your private bucket shower, to remembering that you like your G&T with crushed ice and mint.
  • Singita's Grumeti Camps (Grumeti Reserve, Serengeti, Tanzania): Singita has been wowing followers of the world's glossiest travel tomes with their South Africa camps for years, and they regularly vote Singita SA Best Destination on Earth (a record-setting 5 consecutive years) -- with Grumeti sure to follow suit. Well, given the landscape, Singita's East Africa camps -- a choice of three, each so different you'll feel as if you've arrived at a totally new destination -- are even better. Whether you're on honeymoon or have been married "forever," this is where you come to feel like the world's first couple.

Everyone should travel to  Tanzania  at least once in their life! The country simply has it all. Jaw-droppingly scenic national parks teeming with wildlife, Africa’s highest mountain and Africa’s largest lake. And this is over and above the fact that it hosts the Great Wildebeest Migration – one of the greatest wildlife shows on Earth. Last but not least, you can end your dream safari on the sandy beaches of Zanzibar – a tropical island steeped in history, spices and sunshine. There’s a lot to see and do in Tanzania and a mind-boggling choice of safari lodges. Our round-up of Tanzania’s luxury safari lodges includes something for everyone. Let’s get started!

1. Singita Faru Faru

Singita safari lodges are synonymous with avant-garde design, effortless service and a sensational safari experience. Of these,  Faru Faru Lodge  is one of the best among Tanzania’s luxury safari lodges.

Occupying a large private chunk of the Serengeti National Park , your safari experience is guaranteed to be exclusive and that alone, in the safari capital of the world, is worth gold. The lodge is as slick and polished as the bold design foretells. Yet, the sublime luxury is only part of the story, as your safari experience here is unparalleled. And even outside of migration season, the plains are alive with predators and big game, including lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

  • 350,000-acre private reserve inside the Serengeti National Park for an exclusive year-round safari experience
  • Trademark Singita hospitality with effortless service and sophisticated luxury
  • Children of all ages are welcome and catered for
  • Incredible game viewing safari experiences, including bush walks, a mini rangers club and anti-poaching patrols

Who’s it for?

In a private concession inside the Serengeti National Park, Faru Faru Lodge is the ultimate luxury safari in Tanzania. With special attention given to children of all ages, it is perfect for a luxury family safari experience. And, of course, the setting, service and privacy are made for honeymoons and romance. Faru Faru is also great for solo travellers and couples wanting the ultimate wellness retreat and a  Great Migration bucket list adventure.

2. Singita Mara River Tented Camp

Retaining Singita's trademark elegance and poise,  Mara River Tented Camp  wows with modern simplicity. Small, intimate and very close to nature, those ultra-luxury credentials are miraculously maintained while upping the adventure stakes considerably.

In a 98,000-acre concession along the Mara River of Great Migration fame, this is one of the more remote of Tanzania's luxury safari lodges. Classic tented suites face the river and plains from a private deck, whereas the main living area, equally understated and elegant, reflects the beauty and the incredible wilderness surrounding you.

  • Elegant luxury in the pristine wilderness of northwestern Serengeti National Park
  • Very remote and exclusive as it's the only permanent camp in the Lamai Triangle
  • Tented eco camp for a more intimate exchange between yourself and nature
  • The Mara River is one of the best places to experience Great Migration river crossings

Who's it for?

This camp is ideally placed for the annual Mara River crossing of the Great Migration. Although, the game viewing year-round is also sensational. As a result, it is ideal for discerning safari, birding and nature enthusiasts. The remote and luxurious eco camp is also great for couples, solo travellers and families with older children.

3. Chem Chem Lodge

Among Tanzania's luxury safari lodges,  Chem Chem  stands tall for its proactive community and conservation programmes. In a vast private concession between  Tarangire  and  Lake Manyara National Park  in northern Tanzania, your safari makes a significant impact. Not just for the protection of wildlife but for the rehabilitation of the ecosystem as well as improving the lives of local villagers, who call this ancient piece of land home.

Chem Chem Lodge is a charming rustic-themed safari lodge with an exciting choice of activities, including safaris in Tarangire and Lake Manyara, Maasai-guided walks, village visits and inspiring behind-the-scenes excursions.

  • Chem Chem is a rehabilitated ancient migratory corridor linking the Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks
  • Fascinating conservation strategies, education programmes and cultural interaction activities
  • Incredible game viewing, such as elephant, lion, giraffe, zebra and many more species on the plains and flamingo and many birds at the lake
  • On the Great Migration path and with a variety of habitats, including lakes, grasslands and salt pans

Chem Chem is an incredible luxury safari lodge in its own right. Add the powerful philanthropic credentials, and you've got a safari lodge for all seasons. With educational and cultural interaction opportunities, this is an excellent lodge for families and couples interested in both the wildlife and the people of Tanzania.

4. Kuria Hills Lodge

Kuria Hills Lodge  is in the far northwest of the  Serengeti,  near the Mara River on the  Great Migration  path. Tanzania's luxury safari lodges vary from classic tented camps to luxury palaces. And Kuria Hills Lodge combines both styles, with its tented suites having floor-to-ceiling glass frontages and private plunge pools.

Furthermore, the living area is at once cosy and plush, and the service, food and amenities (for a fully solar-powered safari lodge) wouldn't be out of place in a five-star city hotel. 8. Dunia Camp

Next to the likes of Crater Lodge and Faru Faru,  Dunia Camp  might at first appear rather ordinary as Tanzania's luxury safari lodges go. Until you dig a little deeper, that is. While Dunia Camp is a permanent lodge, its footprint is so light it looks, feels and acts like a mobile camp. Complete with the intimacy and excitement a mobile camp embodies, yet with some essential luxuries a mobile camp cannot. Its central position and secluded location make for excellent game viewing all year round. Furthermore, guided safaris are exceptional with this all-female team, and the camp comes into its own when the Great Migration passes through.

  • The Great Migration reliably passes through camp twice a year
  • Excellent year-round big cat and big game safaris
  • Ultra-light eco-camp running off solar power, borehole water and supplies from the nearby villages

Dunia Camp is great for families with children over five years old, couples, groups and solo travellers wanting to experience the Great Migration as well as a classic Serengeti safari.
